49 best travel games for adults recommended by travellers (updated 2023)

Travel games for adults

If you have ever spent a night in a hostel you have inevitably been invited for a game of asshole. Or president. Or bullshit. What am I talking about? Travel games of course! You can find them in all different names and shapes: some are played with cards, some with dice, and some just by exchanging words. Oh and don’t forget the drinking games! I’ve decided to bundle these travel games for adults into one article.

Travel games

My friends Joost and Samuel enjoying a travel game called Bananagrams

Most of these games are fairly easy to explain to anyone, which is, of course, an important criterion for the international crowds you usually find around hostels. It’s not even just hostels where these backpacker games are played either: in night trains, long-distance buses, forest huts, Couchsurfing, or Airbnb accommodations, anywhere with a bit of flat surface (for the card games, dice games, and board games) and a group of fun-loving people. It’s the ultimate icebreaker and you’ll soon end up chatting away post-game with your newly-made friends.

There are countless games with countless names, some are even known by different names in different parts of the world. I’ve committed to creating an ever-expanding list of these road trip games, so feel free to leave a comment with your favorite game that I haven’t mentioned yet.

Bananagrams board game for adults

Bananagrams – the board game

How can you win Bananagrams?

To be played with wine for best results. The trick is speed, you need to be really quick about forming words. Also, it helps if you can avoid the letters Q, Z, J and X.

What makes Bananagrams fun?

It’s portable, easy to learn, and play is fast. Once the game is over you can argue about whether the words put down by other players are real words. It’s even more fun if you don’t happen to be carrying a dictionary.

What is your best memory playing Bananagrams on your travels?

Slipping an invented word past my fellow players – they were all American and I managed to convince them that it was a very conventional word in British English.

30 seconds board game

30 Seconds board game

How can you win Thirty Seconds?

You can win 30 Seconds by getting as many answers as possible right in 30 seconds. One player must guess a word based on their teammate’s explanation. The main thing here is that the explanation may not contain the actual word or part of the word.

Of course, you can buy the game, but it’s more fun to make one yourself! For example (when there are 4 players – 2 teams): every player writes ten names of – for example – celebrities down on 10 pieces of paper. Then you collect all the pieces of paper in a bowl. Each round the team draws a card and then has 30 seconds to describe the name on the paper as quickly as they can. When the bowl is empty, the team that has the most pieces of paper wins the game.

What makes Thirty Seconds fun?

It’s really funny because sometimes it’s really hard to explain a name and your teammates’ guesses do not make any sense.

What is your best memory playing Thirty Seconds on your travels?

We played this game over and over with two of my friends. In the end we got a bit obsessed and we became really good at in, so now nobody else wants to play it with us any more… Haha!

Settler of Catan board game

Settlers of Catan board game

How can you win The Settlers of Catan?

You win when you gain 10 points (13 in the extended version), which you get by building villages, towns, streets, or draw some of the magic cards in the pack.

What makes The Settlers of Catan fun?

Each time is different. It’s not a fixed board like e.g. the game ‘Risk’ uses. The board is made up of a number of tiles which you put together randomly for each game. Contrary to e.g. Risk, where after so many games you kind of know what you need to win, or what the favorable is, Catan is entirely different in each setup.

What is your best memory playing The Settlers of Catan on your travels?

Beach Agonda, India, with Dutch friends. One of them wasn’t particularly good at losing, and when his wife was about to beat him he’d suggest to smoke a joint. As soon as she did this, she lost all concentration and lost. It was very funny to watch.

Guesstures board game

Guesstures board game

How can you win Guesstures?

You win by simplifying the words to basic body movements. Anything too complicated can always trip up your guessers.

What makes Guesstures fun?

We love how ridiculous you look when playing the game. At the same time, anyone can play and it’s easy to learn.

What is your best memory playing Guesstures on your travels?

Whenever we go to a cabin with a group of friends, it’s always fun to bust it out!

Fun card games for adults

Dobble travel card game

The Dobble travel card game

How can you win Dobble?

There are endless variations to this game, but in the most common one, you will have to get as many cards as possible by matching a symbol from your card to a symbol on the top card in the central pile. The player with the most cards at the end wins.

What makes Dobble fun?

It’s a nerve wrecking game because you’re playing against others to find the matching symbol. There is  always  a matching symbol but sometimes you are looking back and forth frantically between your card and the one in the middle just and it just seems like nothing matches… Then someone else finds one and it’s back to square one. You have to shout the symbol that matches which often leads to hilarious descriptions like “white condom ghost thing”.

What is your best memory playing Dobble on your travels?

I love that it comes in such a small package but has endless possibilities. There are different game modes, e.g. where you have to match other players’ symbols, where you want to get rid of all your cards, or exactly the opposite. It’ll keep you busy for hours… As long as you don’t get a heart attack that is 😉

Ligretto card game

Cards for playing Ligretto

How can you win Ligretto?

The aim of this travel game is to get rid of all your cards faster than all the other players by discarding them in the middle of the table.

What makes Ligretto fun?

It’s FAST! You’ll have to put cards down like a maniac and your strategy can change every second. It’s nice and compact, you only need a single deck of cards, and you don’t need much space to lay the cards out either. The rules are simple and it never gets old.

What is your best memory playing Ligretto on your travels?

A fun Couchsurfer living in Dol, a quiet village on the Hvar island in Croatia, introduced me and my girlfriend to this game. It was her favorite game and she showed us why (by beating us over and over). We played it for hours and hours and the relentless chant of victory, “Ligretto!”, still echoes in my ears.

How can you win Bullshit?

The object of the game is actually pretty simple – get rid of all your cards. However, in order to do that, you have to do a bit of bluffing – if someone calls your bluff (calls ‘bullshit’), you have to pick up all the cards lying on the table!

What makes Bullshit fun?

The risk! If you want to win, you inevitably have to do a little lying. The fun part is trying to con your friends, which when considering that this game is usually played whilst drinking, you become increasingly less good at!

What is your best memory playing Bullshit on your travels?

During our two year Latin American adventure, we played this game a lot. But one of the best memories has to be playing it on a cargo ship heading to the Corn Islands in Nicaragua. The boat was around a day late, litres of rum were drank and bullshit helped pass the hours.

The great Dalmuti card game

The great Dalmuti card game

How can you win The Great Dalmuti?

You can win the Great Dalmuti by playing all your cards. Whoever finishes first becomes the Great Dalmuti, the next one the lesser Dalmuti. When you finish last you become the (lesser or big) slave. What makes it fun is that the roles change and the Dalmuties receive tax from the slaves. Also, everyone respects the Dalmuti (who, of course, sits on the best chair) and orders the slaves around (who not uncommonly don’t even get a chair to sit in).

What makes The Great Dalmuti fun?

So it becomes very competitive as people want to become the Dalmuti and punish the previous Dalmuti for his Behaviour.

What is your best memory playing The Great Dalmuti on your travels?

A vivid memory that comes to mind is when I used to play it in Thailand with my fiancé and parents-in-law on the front porch of our bungalow.

Cribbage card game

Cribbage card game

How can you win Cribbage?

It’s complicated… You need to be able to count cards and add. Because the game is “first to 121 points” you also need to play strategically.

What makes Cribbage fun?

There are loads of ways to score points, both in the play and in the hand, so you need to focus. If you leave points unclaimed your opponent can call “muggins” and claim your points.

What is your best memory playing Cribbage on your travels?

This is quite a complicated game to learn and it was my father who taught me to play on sailing trips as a kid. My best memory is sitting on deck with him playing and calling “muggins” when he’d missed something (possibly on purpose, who knows!)

10. Chinese Poker

How can you win chinese poker.

Get rid of all your cards.

What makes Chinese Poker fun?

It’s a combination of Yahtzee and Poker; what’s not to like? You can create a strategy before the game starts but you might have to rethink it when the game’s not going your way. Decisions, decisions!

What is your best memory playing Chinese Poker on your travels?

I saw a few Chinese people play the game in the “cattle-class” of a sleeper train; they were really passionate about it and it was a lot of fun to watch their strategies as they went along. Where better to learn Chinese poker that from actual Chinese people 🙂

How can you win Solitaire?

Since you’re typically playing this game alone, you’re always a winner! Actually, that is not true, you can still get stuck in the game and be forced to take a loss. Sounds depressing, doesn’t it? You win by stacking all the cards on the table onto each other in four equal piles, in order from low to high and sorted by suit.

What makes Solitaire fun?

It can cure boredom if you’re traveling alone. It can even be a pretty fun game as you’ll have to be creative sometimes to free yourself from a seemingly impossible-to-finish situation. More often, however, it’s a last resort when you’re stuck inside an airport on a 7-hour layover with no plugs to charge your drained electronic devices.

What is your best memory playing Solitaire on your travels?

Since I’ve played this game quite a few times on my solo travels, every time you finish a game there is this little sparkle of joy inside your brain, and you mentally picture all the cards bouncing around and fireworks being set off like in the Windows version. Or at least I did.

How can you win Toepen?

This Dutch game is all about battles. You can win a battle, but that doesn’t mean you’ve won the game (similarly to war.. or a couple getting divorced). The first to 15 points (or 25, if you want to play for longer) loses, making the other players the winners (but really, it’s the person with the least “penalty-points” that is the happiest).

What makes Toepen fun?

The game involves some simple but entertaining mind-games. “Why the hell did he/she toep?” is a common question that gets raised often during the game. Does the player have great cards and is therefore confident that they are going to win, or are they simply bluffing? This is easily our favorite go-to game on the road.

What is your best memory playing Toepen on your travels?

We’ve played this game about a hundred times on every (long-distance) bicycle that we did together. It’s an easy game to explain to others and gets strategic when you’re playing with people that have played it before. A memory that comes to mind: Steven was with Joost in Denmark where they were playing Toepen with a Danish girl (she called it “Poopen”). She Toeped (“Pooped”) at the most random moments, leaving Steven and Joost completely clueless of her strategy.

Skip bo card game

Skip bo card game

How can you win Skip Bo?

The classic way: you need to be the first to get rid of your cards.

What makes Skip Bo fun?

It is easy to learn, and while it’s a strategic game it’s still possible to win when you’ve just learned the rules.

What is your best memory playing Skip Bo on your travels?

I have so many memories playing this with Couchsurfers at home, but my best memory while travelling would be on a train in China where we shared a sleeper with an Argentinian couple. We played into the small hours of the morning, learning about each other and our journeys.

Fluxx card game

Fluxx card game

How can you win Fluxx?

Let’s start with the rules of Fluxx: there are no rules. Yup. Every time you put a card down the rules change, which also sometimes means you’ll have to your flip your strategy 180 degrees. You have to collect cards and you’ve won when you have accomplished the objectives that are on the table at that moment before someone else changes them.

What makes Fluxx fun?

It’s a very random game, so if you like your games structured then you might want to try another one. That said, it’s that actual chaotic element of the game that makes it fun. You’re constantly checking if you can annoy or block your opponents with the current rulesets, and sometimes it’s even possible that someone has won without him/her knowing!

What is your best memory playing Fluxx on your travels?

I haven’t played this game on any travels yet, but I would love to hear from someone that has! Leave a comment .

Egyptian rat screw card game

Egyptian rat screw card game

How can you win Egyptian Rat Screw?

The object of the game is to be the person with all the cards at the end of the game. This means the game can take a very long time.

What makes Egyptian Rat Screw fun?

Once you and other players learn how to play the game moves very fast from player to player. The intensity heightens with the speed of the game. The most fun part about this game is when you get two cards that are the same flipped one on top of the other. The first person to slap those cards wins the deck. This also means that people who are “out” of cards can slap their way back in.

What is your best memory playing Egyptian Rat Screw on your travels?

I learned this game in a summer camp when I was very young. When I studied abroad in Australia I taught all my new friends how to play it. We would spend hours just passing the time away with this game. No drinks involved!

How can you win Rummy?

Individual games are won by the first person who “goes out” or discards every card in their hand. Along the way, they rack up points by putting down three of a kind and straights of the same suit. Your points get tallied up per game and in our case, a full game runs to 500 points and can last 1-2 hours.

What makes Rummy fun?

Rummy is fun because it’s so basic and it’s almost akin to baseball; a game to 500 is never over until the person reaches that point total. The game has so many intricacies and quirky rules that make it fun all by itself. Enter a couple of people who are married or just friends, and it can get crazier by the hand.

What is your best memory playing Rummy on your travels?

We’ve played everywhere when traveling, and I try my best to not swear out loud when losing badly. Unfortunately, I failed when riding a boat to Jeju Island in Korea and earned quite a few stares my way. That was a cue for me to go outside and get some fresh air.

Cards against humanity card game

Cards against humanity card game

How can you win Cards Against Humanity?

You need to make the other people vote for your answer to a ridiculous question.

What makes Cards Against Humanity fun?

It is all about reading other people and figuring out what kind of answer this person would like, some might like dirty jokes, other logical answers etc. Oh, and the game is free… you can download it from CardsAgainstHumanity.com (or you can buy it via the link below if you don’t want to print the cards yourself).

What is your best memory playing Cards Against Humanity on your travels?

I was introduced to it while Couchsurfing in Zürich and one girl got the question “How did I lose my virginity?”. My answer was “Through an AK47” which is what she choose and that kind of became the joke of the evening. The game gave us so many laughs and very fun atmosphere. Great way to get to know new people!

How can you win Shithead?

This game isn’t about being the winner, it’s about not being the loser aka the “shithead”. If you’re the last person in the game you will have the endearing title of shithead bestowed upon you until you can redeem yourself in the next game.

What makes Shithead fun?

At the end, there’s always an element of chance involved and it’s always fun to watch someone who thinks they’re about the win fall from grace. Also having an excuse to call strangers you’ve just met shitheads is never a bad thing.

What is your best memory playing Shithead on your travels?

Teaching the game to some travellers at a hostel in Bosnia and watching them spend the next few days engrossed in matches.

How can you win Go Fish?

You can win Go Fish by being the player that collected the most sets of 4 from the pack of cards (e.g. all the 3s, all the kings etc).

What makes Go Fish fun?

It isn’t a game that requires too much thought and isn’t difficult so long as you have a good memory. It is also great to see the look on your friend or relatives’ face when you steal the majority of a set from them which they were hoarding!

What is your best memory playing Go Fish on your travels?

My best memory of playing this game is when I used to play it as a teenager with a friend I made in the apartments in Fuerteventura. At the time I loved all things fish related and I had a novelty set of cards in the shape of fish. We used to play it whenever we had a moment before dinner after going to the beach or swimming in the pool.

Exploding kittens card game

Exploding kittens card game

How do you win Exploding Kittens?

You can win Exploding Kittens by becoming the only player who isn’t blown up by a Kitten. Yes, it is as ridiculous as it sounds. You basically just draw a card each turn hoping not to draw an exploding kitten card. If you do you are out of the game. Unless you can defuse the exploding kitten in which case the card goes back into the deck. All the other card you draw and can play are used to somehow avoid the exploding kittens.

What makes Exploding Kittens fun?

One of the reasons is the pure ridiculousness of the concept which is also the genius of the game. I mean, who doesn’t like kitten or explosions or laser pens. Next is that it is very easy to play and mostly luck based with just a very small hint of strategy. Its just easy and ridiculous which is what you want when playing games with people you’ve just met.

What is your best memory playing Exploding Kittens on your travels?

I personally haven’t played this while traveling yet as it has only been out for a few months (at time of writing) and I haven’t had the opportunity. But the fact that it is so easy, portable and fun should prove to be a winning combo in any setting.

Koehandel card game

Koehandel, a popular Dutch card game

How do you win Koehandel?

The Dutch game Koehandel has two phases, in phase one players take turns pulling an animal card from a pile and auctioning it off to the other players. Each player should try to get the animals for the lowest price possible. As the game progresses, more money is distributed among the players which means the animals get more expensive. The key to winning during this phase is to correctly adjust your theoretical pricing to the increasing money supply.

During phase two, players bid for each other’s animals in a blind auction. This means that both players put an undisclosed amount of money on the table and whoever bids highest will win the other player’s animal, while the money is also being exchanged. During this phase, the key to winning is to get inside the other player’s mind and correctly predict how much he or she will bid. Then you bid a little bit more so that you win the animal cheaply.

What makes Koehandel fun?

Koehandel is really fun because of the unpredictable nature of the game. In every action you take, you have to consider what your opponent will most likely do, based on what he or she thinks that you will do. There is a lot of game theory involved, which makes the game very dynamic and interesting, it never becomes dull even when you play it with the same people over and over again as players adjust their strategies based on observations from past games.

What is your best memory playing Koehandel on your travels?

A few years back I rented a house in Florianopolis, Brazil. I intentionally rented a house with a few spare rooms so that I could have friends over to visit. During my three month stay, I introduced this relatively unknown game to all my friends and they all loved it! They still talk about how much fun it was.

How do you win Crazy Eights?

You win a hand by being the player to get rid of all your cards. Any player left holding cards adds the sum of the cards to add their total. Although there are different variations on the rules, I usually play with the first player who gets to a total of 108 is the loser.

What makes Crazy Eights fun?

It’s fast-paced and frustrating at the same time. Plus it’s super easy to learn.

What is your best memory playing Crazy Eights on your travels?

Playing for hours on end with a Kiwi couple on the roof of a hostel in Istanbul. There had been a pretty major earthquake nearby so the city was basically shut down as many feared another quake in the days following. It was a great way to pass the time and bring some levity to a pretty serious situation.

How can you win Kemps?

You play in teams of 2 people, and the objective to get 4-of-a-kind (e.g. four 8’s or four Kings) amongst your team. Once you (think) your teammate has a 4-of-a-kind, you can yell “Kemps!”. If you indeed have a 4-of-a-kind, your team scores a point. Otherwise, you lose a point (but the game keeps going). You can even take it up a notch and get a double-kemp when both you and your teammate have a 4-of-a-kind. After winning x number of points, the game is won. There is an awesome move too: you can yell “counter Kemps!” when you think one of your opponents has 4-of-a-kind, and their teammate hasn’t called it yet.

What makes Kemps fun?

There aren’t that many cards games that are played in a team, which makes this one unique. The fun element also comes from the way you can signal your team member. You are allowed to talk during the game, which means you can signal to your teammate (who sits opposite of you) that you are saving a certain value of the card (e.g. Queens). Obviously, it is supposed to be a secret signal, as the others will easily figure it out and block your strategy.

What is your best memory playing Kemps on your travels?

I played this game at my home in Tokyo with my couchsurfer guests, amongst which was Victor. The others were from France (me), the USA and Israel. Soon we were coming up with ridiculous signals to let the other team member know what you were saving up. We would say “Do you have a red banana?”, which would stand for e.g. Jacks. Figuring out each other’s codes and even faking other people’s codes made the game very entertaining.

Top trumps star wars

Top trumps Star Wars edition

How can you win Top Trumps?

Top Trumps is a really unique British game and a favorite with kids. Each pack of Top Trumps is based on a theme (animals, volcanoes, superheroes etc..) and each card in the pack contains five categories with numerical values, that you can use to ‘trump’ your opponent. The aim of the game and the way that you win is to get all your opponents’ cards (or the most number of cards in an allotted time).

What makes Top Trumps fun?

It’s a really fun game to play as a family and even young kids can enjoy it. There is also such a huge range of themes that you can upgrade to a new pack and game, which helps to keep things interesting. Depending on the ages of kids playing, it can be fast (or very slow!).

What is your best memory playing Top Trumps on your travels?

We play Top Trumps all the time with the kids. When we’re out to eat, waiting at an airport, at home… it really is a winner for families. One of my favourite memories is playing Harry Potter Top Trumps on an early morning ferry from Galiano Island to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

Uno card game

Uno, perhaps the most popular card game

How can you win Uno?

The winner of a single game of Uno is the first player to get rid of all of the cards in his/her hand. If you want to make the game more exciting, however, you can play over a longer period of time, creating an Uno tournament, adding up points as you go. Each card is worth a certain number of points, and to win you are aiming for as few points as possible. This is fun because it sees the gameplay change and become more tactical.

What makes Uno fun?

Uno is fun because there is always that chance of forgetting to announce you are on your last card and paying the price. It can be a tactical game and often when played in a group of friends you will find that a certain amount of ganging up and revenge play occurs. I also couldn’t believe just how many people we met, of differing nationalities that knew how to play Uno and loved it.

What is your best memory playing Uno on your travels?

My friend and I met up with a french lady who I worked with and her sister whilst doing a road trip of Western Australia. Our nightly entertainment consisted of huddling around our camping table, wrapped in blankets, supping goon (cask wine) from camping mugs, whilst watching the sunset and playing Uno furiously. They still don’t believe I won 8 games in a row without cheating. Sorry girls but there was definitely no cheating involved!

How can you win Euchre?

The game is played with two teams of two players. Players hold five cards each out of a deck that uses only cards 9 to A, and the team that calls the suit that will be trump must secure at least three tricks to score a point. If you get all five tricks you get two points, and if al players call for trump and decide to “go alone” his teammate sits out and the one player goes against the other two on the opposing team. If the lone players win all five tricks, the team gets four points. First team to 11 wins.

What makes Euchre fun?

It takes a bit of skill, luck and taking chances, but it easy to learn quickly. We love that you can play several complete games within a couple hours, while laughing, holding a conversation and enjoying a few beers.

What is your best memory playing Euchre on your travels?

My wife Colleen and I played on opposite teams against another couple on a trip in Las Vegas. My best friend Matt and I who have played Euchre since we were young adults repeated beat the ladies — maybe three games in a row — and had built up a 10-0 lead in the fourth game when they came back to win 11-10. This turn of events, all against the backdrop of our earlier taunts and a few too many beers, left the guys humbled and the women rejoicing. It was hilarious.

Dixit board game

Dixit board game

How can you win Dixit?

The storyteller (a different player on every turn) picks out one of six cards and describes it (without showing the card) to the other players. The other players then pick a card that they think best describes it, and place it on the table. The point scoring here is unique: if everybody or nobody guesses the correct card, the storyteller gets no points. Therefore it is key to give just the right clues so that a few players get it right, but not all. The first to 30 points wins.

What makes Dixit fun?

The cards themselves are quite funny, and the more creative people get with associating your story with the cards the funnier the game becomes.

What is your best memory playing Dixit on your travels?

I haven’t played this game on the road yet. Have you? Let us know in the comments !

Travlin' card game

Travlin’ card game

How can you win Travelin’?

The game is about traveling to new countries, so obviously, each country you visit gives you more points. When one player reaches 5 countries, they receive a bonus of 5 points and the game immediately ends. Count the points and like pretty much every game in existence, the person with the most points wins.

What makes Travelin’ fun?

For me as the game designer, the best part of Travelin’ is seeing the interaction between players. Having someone be so close to winning only to be stopped with a Border Control card is always fun. Or chaining together a huge combo to go from 3 countries to 5 and stealing the victory from another player – yeah, that’s a pretty awesome feeling too.

What is your best memory playing Travelin’ on your travels?

Hands down, my best memory of playing Travelin’ (and I’ve played a lot) are the countless games at the Midland Hostel in Bucharest. Because everyone there (staff, long term guests, friends of the hostel) became so good at the game, the matches we play there often turn into knock-down, drag-out slugfests. The best game of Travelin’ I’ve ever played was exactly one of those games and while us long-time players were were busy attacking each other, a person playing for the very first time was able to sneakily come from behind and take a well-earned win from the pros.

road trip drinking games

Codenames duet card game

How can you win Codenames duet?

Codemasters duet is a cooperative game, meaning that you are playing against the game, rather than against each other. The aim is to guess each other’s codewords within a certain amount of turns (more turns for beginners, less for more advanced players).

What makes Codenames duet fun?

You’ll spend your time finding singular words that connect 2 or more (random) words in front of you while factoring in that the connection might not be as obvious for the person in front of you. It’s a game of psychology, and it could therefore go hilariously wrong. You can’t speak while playing this game, only to say a word and how many words it is connected to, so it can be really frustrating watching your fellow “agent” struggle and choose a word that reveals an assassin, which means you both lose.

What is your best memory playing Codenames duet on your travels?

The good thing about this game is that you can transport it in just a few small bags. I have yet to play this game on my travels, however, I know that it’s a great game that requires little setup and can entertain for a good chunk of time. At home, I play this mostly with my wife, where I try to get into her brain and try to figure out which of my weird references and connections she would understand.

30. Liar’s dice

How can you win liar’s dice.

I win by experience. I’ve probably played for ten years so I’ve seen it all. You win by being unpredictable. You can win new friends and new language skills with the game also. I know the basic numbers in French thanks to this dice game.

What makes Liar’s dice fun?

The simplicity makes it fun. The excitement and the fact that every round is unique. It’s never the same game twice. Playing with someone who has a degree in math is also fun because you see their brains running in high gear.

What is your best memory playing Liar’s dice on your travels?

Best moment is a tie between looking for a runaway die on the floor of a sauna in the Finnish wilderness, naked with a bunch of naked girls, and playing the game for a whole day in the car with my friend Eric, while he was driving us from Vancouver to Fairbanks.

Rory's story cubes dice game

Rory’s story cubes dice game

31. Rory’s Story Cubes

How can you win rory’s story cubes.

The most creative story wins! No hardcore rules here. A winner would probably be chosen from the group you play it with.

What makes Rory’s Story Cubes fun?

It’s the ultimate game to train your imagination. Because of the different packs (for example a travel pack), you can create unlimited storylines. It’s also really fun to give some dice to other people so that you can create a story together in turns.

What is your best memory playing Rory’s Story Cubes on your travels?

Not yet tested, the game is pretty new. First results were hilarious though! Have you played this on the road and a have a great travel memory to share? Let me know in the comments .

Yahtzee dice game

Yahtzee, perhaps the most popular dice game

How can you win Yahtzee?

To be honest, luck plays a very important role in Yahtzee. But if you choose wisely after throwing your dices, you might have a better chance of winning. For example, I always wait before writing down my 1’s and 2’s. So if everything goes wrong and you don’t throw a full house or a four of a kind, you can always fill in your 1’s and 2’s and you don’t lose a lot of points.

What makes Yahtzee fun?

You can play it with 2 or more people. Winning depends mostly on luck and a bit on strategy, so everybody can join. It’s easy to pack so you can play it wherever you are; are you on a beach or in the middle of the jungle? Yahtzee is your game!

What is your best memory playing Yahtzee on your travels?

I played it a lot during my trip around the world, so it reminds me of traveling through Thailand but also backpacking through Australia and our roadtrip on the American west coast. From then on I have taken it with me every time I go away for a longer period.

Pickomino dice game

Pickomino dice game

How can you win Regenwormen?

Simply put, you have to be lucky to win: this game is not about being the smartest or most strategic player. Really everyone can win, depending on how much you dare to gamble and how the dice will roll.

What makes Regenwormen fun?

The most fun part of the game is ‘stealing’ worms from other players to make it more difficult for them to win. You will see people from all over the world hesitate the first time they are able to steal the worms, but after that they will happily grab them from you with a big smile on their faces!

What is your best memory playing Regenwormen on your travels?

We played Regenwomen with the porters and guides during our Himalaya trek. The porters didn’t mingle with the tourists at first but this game helps to knock down the cast system. The result: they’ve beaten me several times.

34. Guess the Song

How to play guess the song.

Best played on road trips. Everyone in the car has an iPhone (or other music playing device of course) and chooses 5 songs. Their favorite song to dance to, favorite song to sing to, best song to pick someone up in the bar, their wedding song and then their funeral song. Mix up the order and everyone has to guess which is which!

How can you win Guess the Song?

Whoever can guess the correct the song the most amount of times wins!

What makes Guess the Song fun?

You get to hear new music, and learn more about your fellow travelers by listening to their favorite tunes! Author’s note: I’ve organized a few Couchsurfing events with a similar concept: everybody had to pass their music device to the person on their right. It was a great way to get to know other people well in a short time and a lot of fun!

What is your best memory playing Guess the Song on your travels?

Hmmm… I’d say the time when a passenger played Miley Cyrus – Party in the U.S.A. as their guilty pleasure song… and everyone knew the words! 10 People all singing as loud as we could! Lots of fun and a great memory!

How can you win I Spy?

This traditional kids’ game is so much fun when you’re on the road and is definitely for adults too! Go for the smaller objects and the hidden (but not too hidden) things. Oh and don’t cheat, so don’t pick moving things 😉

What makes I Spy fun?

It opens your eyes to all the beauty, small and big, around you.

What is your best memory playing I Spy on your travels?

This game is the best when you’re stuck in traffic in a bus in Asia, because there are always amazing colors and strange objects around!

How can you win Truth or Dare?

There is no winning or losing in this game, that is why it can go on and on and on! If a dare is too much for a person, he or she will get punished by revealing 2 truth. If a truth is too much for a person to reveal, he or she will have to carry out 2 dares to compensate it.

What makes Truth or Dare fun?

Those who join the game are pretty much open to doing every shameless dare and digging out the deepest secrets they keep. What makes this game fun is that you are testing out each others’ limits. Of course, to have the game continued safety without causing any hurt-feelings, we have to be sensitive to our friends’ conditions and situations. For example: do not try to ask about a recent break-up when the wound is still fresh.

What is your best memory playing Truth or Dare on your travels?

I will not forget the first time we played Truth of Dare in a Russian intercity train. We went all out on “Dares”, cat-walking down the narrow corridor filled with on-looking Russians, dancing at the front and asking snacks from people. At first, the Russians watched us with stern face but after a while they too started to enjoy the show.

How to play The Guessing Capital Game?

The concept is to name the capital of the country someone chooses. For example, I say Ethiopia and someone would need to guess the capital which is Addis Ababa.

What makes The Guessing Capital Game fun?

Many times someone will guess the wrong capital and it is fun when you start to decide what you win. You can play for big stakes like money where the first person to get a capital wrong wins all the money or even play just on who pays for something next, like dinner. A lot of people would be surprised the capitals of many countries.

What is your best memory playing The Guessing Capital Game on your travels?

This is actually a game that I lost. We were playing for $1 for each capital that we got right. Everyone would put in a dollar every time the right capital was given and the first person who lost they would lose all the money to the winner. The person stating the country. Eventually we got to big stakes and I ended up losing a full round trip ticket to Asia!

How can you win Never pass a sample?

This is perhaps the best travel game you’ll read about today. The rules are simple: as you walk around in the airport, you may never pass a free sample without grabbing it; chocolate, drinks, perfume- everything. You lose by being so pre-occupied with free samples that you miss your flight.

What makes Never pass a sample fun?

Free stuff!

What is your best memory playing Never pass a sample on your travels?

In Singapore around Xmas was especially fun. I walked around for about 6 hours and in the end, my belly ached from all the chocolates, I was pretty tipsy and I must have smelled like a prostitute because of all the perfume samples.

How can you win Pizza FTW?

The pizza game is pretty simple to play and does not need any equipment bar a couple of creative minds with some knowledge of popular culture. Each player takes a turn to name a title of film, book, or song replacing a word of choice with the word ‘pizza’ or adding the word ‘pizza’ for comedic value. For example ‘Saturday Night Pizza’ (instead of Saturday Night Fever!).

What makes Pizza FTW?

Everyone is a winner in Pizza FTW, it’s usually a giggle and it’s so simple some may say ‘it’s a pizza piss!’

What is your best memory playing Pizza FTW on your travels?

We’ve enjoyed passing time away whilst hiking, playing the pizza game. Feel free to Tweet or Facebook us some responses! Naturally ‘pizza’ can be any word you see fit.

How can you win Zitchdog?

Well, it’s pretty simple. It’s a fun game to play on a road trip. Whenever you see a dog you say “ZITCHDOG!”. Whoever spots the most dogs by the time your destination arrives is the winner.

What makes Zitchdog?

Well if everyone spots the dog at the same time and screams ZITCHDOG, it’s pretty hilarious. Or if the others don’t see a dog at all, you might have to stop and look to ensure the person is not cheating – haha.

What is your best memory playing Zitchdog on your travels?

I was playing ZitchDog with my hubby on our road trip to Agra. It was fun and then when we were about to reach our destination, we lost count totally. P.S. – This had nothing to do with the fact that we had a couple of beers.

41. Spoons / Ezelen

How can you win spoons.

You pass on a card to the person next to you (so you’ll get one too), then discard a card and pass it on again. You win by getting 4 of a kind.

What makes Spoons fun?

It’s slow at first, but later games pick up the pace and this is where it gets super fun. Once you have 4 of a kind (4 aces, 4 queens, 4 fives, whatever) then you pick up a spoon. The rest has to instantly pick up a spoon too. If you are last to pick up a spoon, you lose (and drink). It’s hilarious when one person is still playing when everyone else has stopped because they are so into the game! Then you all laugh, re-deal… and drink some more! No spoons available? This game can be played by putting your finger on the side of a table instead of picking up a spoon.

What is your best memory playing Spoons on your travels?

Not yet played while traveling. Have you played this on the road and a have a great travel memory to share? Let me know in the comments .

How do you win Monkey Monkey?

You win by not ending the game with a card that makes a pair with the “monkey card”!

What makes Monkey Monkey fun?

It’s a very easy game purely based on luck, so if you’re planning to get drunk quickly, this could be the game for you.

What is your best memory playing Monkey Monkey on your travels?

How can you win mexico.

This game has a lot of winners, but just one loser ;-). The player whose dice is first at one will lose the game and has to drink a shot (preferably vodka).

What makes Mexico fun?

It’s easy to play, everyone can join and the element of drinking a shot of liquor makes it really fun!

What is your best memory playing Mexico on your travels?

A friend of us lost this game 12 times on one evening, so he got really drunk. At one point he wasn’t even able to roll his die without it falling off the table, which meant you had a drink a shot regardless of the number rolled.

How do you win King’s Cup?

Aaah, the classic drinking game. There are different rules throughout the world. You start by putting all the cards face-down around a cup in the middle of the table. Then, each person picks up a card and the card’s value (not suit) determines what happens. At this game, much like with any other drinking game, nobody really “wins”. But if you do, you’re sober and everyone else is drunk. Does that sound fun to you? 😉

What makes King’s Cup fun?

You can call it fun, you can call it stupid, but one thing is certain: everybody gets out-of-their-heads drunk with this game.

What is your best memory playing King’s Cup on your travels?

How to play fives.

No need to have any objects, except for your hand. It’s possible to play with any number of players, but the math can get pretty hard with a large number of participants. For the sake of this explanation, we’ll say that there are 5 players. The “it” player has to come up with a number from 0 to 25 (since we have 5 players it has to be a multiple of 5).

Each player on the count of 3 shoots out their hand and shows either zero (fist) or 5 fingers. Let’s say the player came up with the number “10” and 2 of the 5 people had a fist and 3 people were showing 5 fingers. This would make a total of 15 which means nothing happens, and the game moves on with the next “it” player and the process described above repeats. The important part: if they guess correctly they must say (totally straight-faced) “Thank you very much for this lovely game of fives”.

What makes Fives fun?

It’s stupid hard because you get SO EXCITED that you guessed it correctly! But you can’t show emotion otherwise you’ll lose.

What is your best memory playing Fives on your travels?

I played this at a hostel in Costa Rica on Nebanaw Years Eve. It was a great night of eating homemade tortillas and drinking cheap rum.

How to play Sheep?

You sit around a circle, cover your teeth with your lips (like you’re mocking the old man that lives down the street) and say “SHEEP” to a person sitting next to you. They say “sheep” to the person next to them; it goes round and round. If you want to change the direction, you say “Sheep-pong!” and it changes direction. If you show your teeth, you lose/drink.

What makes Sheep fun?

Endless giggles when you try to say Sheep without opening your mouth.

What is your best memory playing Sheep on your travels?

We played this during a typhoon when we hardly had enough light and rain was pouring outside. We just couldn’t stop laughing.

47. Assholes / President / Scumbags

How do you win assholes.

This game is unique in that the game is never truly won. If you win a game, you will become the president/asshole/scumbag (depending on which version you play) and the game continues on. Other people get titles too, like vice-president, scum or vice-scum, which they keep for the next game. You simply stop playing when you get bored which is, you know, never.

What makes Assholes fun?

It’s really fun working your way up from being scum (last place) to the president (first place). If you’re the loser of the last game, you’ll have to switch your two best cards with the winner of the previous game, which makes it harder to win the round. It is still possible, however, and game by game you can improve your rank. There are many rules that can be added, such as that the president can order the loser of the previous game to get everyone a round of beer, making him/her the “beer bitch”.

What is your best memory playing Assholes on your travels?

How do you win mayer.

There are no winners in Mayer, just losers (who drink). You start with 6 lives, and the player that first loses all of their lives loses the game. This dice game is played with only two dice and a cup, so it’s easy to see why it fits excellently in the travel game category. The game contains a lot of bluffing, although that depends on the players of course.

What makes Mayer fun?

I like the game because it’s an easy icebreaker when you meet new people. It’s easy to learn and everybody can join in, and you can learn a lot about your fellow players while playing the game. I personally love it when you have to decide whether the person you are playing against is lying or telling the truth. I look for specific signs and when I call them out some people really have no poker face!

What is your best memory playing Mayer on your travels?

Victor’s flashback : I remember this game being played everywhere I looked in Copenhagen. Especially in cafés and bars, where it was a very normal thing to ask the bartender for a cup and two dice. It is a truly great way to kill some time and meet some (soon-to-be) friends.

How do you win Mexxen?

You can win Mexxen by having a really good stomach haha! There is no such thing as winners in this game, but the one who doesn’t feel sick after playing it is the one who ‘wins’. But you have to lose some to win eventually. So drinking some shots of alcohol is recommended.

What makes Mexxen fun?

You really have to think some things through, for instance, if you’re throwing the dice once or twice. And you can’t throw the dice on the ground because you will have to drink a shot and the game starts over. And of course, more shots means more dice on the floor and so on. The funniest thing is that there are always people who have a ridiculous amount of bad luck and therefore will get drunk very early on in the game.

What is your best memory playing Mexxen on your travels?

My best memory playing Mexxen on my travels is mostly the few hours after playing the game. The funniest thing is that a lot of friends are getting drunk and everybody is falling asleep at the most weird places: in the kitchen, under a tree and even under the table! The photos are the best memories, but you know how it works: what happens on the island…

How on earth is Farkle not on this list? it’s a dice game that takes minutes to learn and fit’s in your pocket. (One of those old-school 35mm film canisters to be exact.) This is always in my bag and makes an appearance at every brewery we hit up. https://www.amazon.com/ROUTE-Pocket-Farkel-dice-game/dp/B01H67OC6M/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1B02QP2BHEROX&keywords=pocket+farkle&qid=1655128613&sprefix=pocket+farkle%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-3

Thank you for the nice list. I will definitely try out a few of those. I particularly like card games and board games.

Make & break card game.. newly launched in market.. but awesome fun making & breaking couples! My circle is right now addicted to this game

Victor Eekhof

Haha, breaking couples sounds fun! 😀 Thanks for the suggestion!

Censored Party Game

One of my favorite adult road trip games is “Censored”.

Censored is a dirty phrase guessing game that simple and super fun. Give clues to get your friends (or roommates or relatives) to guess as many dirty adult themed secret phrases as possible in 90 seconds but no one (not the clue giver, not your guessing friends) is allowed to say the taboo words (if you catch them guess one, give them a heads up they are wrong by buzzing them with the buzzer)! Check out the app store of your choice!

Cool game! Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

Lynn

Great article thanks. We are always on the lookout for new after-dinner games for our holidays, especially now our kids are grown up. A suggestion for you is Munchkin. A card only game so easy to pack. In a similar vein to Fluxx, the rules change often and there are many expansion decks to add variety.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion! I have heard of the game but I have never played it. I’ll make sure to add it to this article when I do! 🙂

Cheers, Victor

Before tablets and podcasts, we used games to keep us entertained. For your next road trip, try some of these games to keep you going along the way.

fuelthejourney

Brand Publisher

Road trips always seem like a great idea at the beginning, and they are! But let's face it: spending hours on end in a moving metal box with the same people can take its toll on your patience. Especially if energetic kids are involved.

So here, to combat potential boredom and irritability in passengers any age, are some fun road trip games to keep everyone in the car happy:, 1. if you have some sleepy passengers in the car, you should definitely play "while you were sleeping.".

road trip drinking games

The Game: Create the most believable story when someone falls asleep

• First, a passenger must fall asleep

• After five minutes of slumber, the awake passengers begin creating a story

• Each person takes turns adding to the story

• Once the passenger wakes up, you have to get them to believe the story

• If somebody breaks character, they lose a point

• If somebody goes off script, you ask, "Are you sure?" and then that person is silenced and loses two points

• If you successfully fool the person, each storyteller wins three points

• If the sleeping passenger fools the car and joins their story correctly, they steal their current point total

• The one with the most points at the destination wins

2. Change ONE letter of a title and get people to guess it by describing the plot.

The game:  Change ONE letter of a title and get people to guess it by describing the plot. Unfortunately this game doesn't have a name like the others do, but it's still super fun and you can play it anywhere.

• Pick a movie, video game, TV show, or book title and change one letter of it. Don't pick anything to obscure.

• Get people to guess it by describing the plot of the new title you created. For example, you might change Beauty and the Beast to Beauty and the F east , and make up a new plot about a beautiful woman who runs a catering company and has to plan the biggest meal of her career.

• Adding or subtracting a letter from the title also works, just as long as it's still only one letter. Example: Star Warts  instead of Star Wars

3. For a good old-fashioned guessing game, play "21 Questions."

road trip drinking games

The Game: Guess what a person is thinking in 21 questions

• Someone thinks of something

• Then the car begins by asking questions

• You can't repeat a question that has been asked

• Whoever guesses it right gets to start the next round

4. If your car mates are current and hip on events, then you should play "Did You Hear That...?"

road trip drinking games

The Game: Pop culture and news collide for a fun game of fact or fiction

• You are trying to fool your opponent

• You start by asking, "Did you hear that _______ happened?"

• Your opponent can either say, "That didn't happen," or, "Tell me more."

• If they correctly guess that it didn't happen, the opponent gets two points

• If they incorrectly guess that it didn't happen, you steal one point and gain two additional

• If you are asked, "Tell me more," points double at the end of the statement

5. For a car full of human jukeboxes, play "The Singing Game."

road trip drinking games

The Game: Connect song lyrics for a fun sing-along game

• One person starts singing a song

• Using a lyric from the song, the next person has to connect it with another song

• It continues on until somebody messes up the lyrics or is stumped

• "I kissed a girl and I..."

• "...Really, really, really like you..."

• "...Doing that thing you do, breaking my heart into a million..."

6. If your car is full of film buffs, play "The Movie Game."

road trip drinking games

The Game: Connect actors through movies they have starred in

• The game starts with an actor/actress

• The next person has to say a movie that they were in

• The following person has to state another actor/actress from that movie

• It continues on

• If someone is incorrect, they have to sit out the next round

• Elijah Wood

• Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

• Sean Astin

7. When you have a car full of optimists, play "Fortunately/Unfortunately."

road trip drinking games

The Game: Making a fortunate situation out of an unfortunate situation

• One person starts by saying "Fortunately" and mentioning something fortunate

• The next person has to follow by saying something unfortunate about the previous situation

• Move clockwise around the car switching between fortunate and unfortunate situations

• If somebody stumbles, they get a strike. Three strikes, and you're out

• Last man standing wins

• Fortunately, this will be my first time seeing the Grand Canyon

• Unfortunately, it was invaded by Martians just last week

• Fortunately, I just finished my course in extraterrestrial communications

8. All know-it-alls will spark some fierce competition if you play "The Alphabet Categories."

road trip drinking games

• This is NOT the road sign game; you name things in alphabetical order from a category

• You start with a category like food, bands, cars, etc.

• You start with A and travel down the alphabet

• You can get as specific with your categories as you want

9. If you love to get your snack on, definitely play "Regional Food Master."

road trip drinking games

The Game: Collect the most regional snacks between the start and finish of your road trip

• At each gas station you stop at, you have to find a local snack

• You can only get one food item per gas station

• The food item has to be created within the region the stop is located

• Whoever has the most snacks by your destination wins

• Duplicate cities don't count

10. For the spontaneous math wizards, play "The Counting Game."

road trip drinking games

The Game: See how high you can collectively count without any order

• Somebody random begins with the number one

• Another person follows at random with the next number

• If two people say the same number at the same time, you start over

• If there is more than a five-second pause, you start over

• You are trying to get to the number 20

11. For all the walking encyclopedias, play "The Name Game."

road trip drinking games

The Game: Connect first and last names of famous people

• Start with the name of anyone famous (besides yourself, duh...)

• The next person has to say a person whose first name starts with the letter of the previous last name

• If somebody mentions a person where both the first and last name start with the same letter, the game reverses in order (e.g., Bob Barker, Lindsay Lohan, Mandy Moore, etc.)

• Tom Brady

• Billy Joel

• Janet Jackson (reverse!)

• John Oliver

12. For the aspiring DJs in your car, play "Battle of the Bands."

road trip drinking games

The game: Two people battle to pick the best song based on a category

• One person gives a theme, like "songs about cities" or "love songs"

• Two contestants have 60 seconds

• Each contestant takes a turn playing their selected song

• The car judges the two selections and picks a winner

• Tally up scores at the end of the game

13. If you consider yourself a wordsmith, then definitely play "Word Association."

road trip drinking games

The Game: See how far you can string along words through association

• The name of the game is associations

• One person begins with a word

• The following person has to think of a word that is associated

• The game continues until somebody messes up or says something far-out

• Taco Salad

14. If you are looking for an easy laugh, play "Cows on My Side."

road trip drinking games

The Game: Holler when you see a cow!

• When you see a cow on your side of the road, you have to yell, "Cows on my side!"

• Every time you call a cow, you get a point

• If you see cows on the other side you say, "Cows on your side!"

• If you call, "Cows on your side," before the person sees them, you steal a point

• If anyone sees a cemetery they scream, "Ghost cow," stealing all the other side's points

15. And if you want to kick it old-school, play "The Alphabet Game."

road trip drinking games

The Game: This is the classic alphabet game everyone knows and loves. Go through alphabet using words on signs

• You are trying to find words in alphabetical order

• You can use billboards, business, and road signs

• You can't use license plates

• The first one to get to the end of the alphabet wins

• Once a word is said, nobody else can repeat that word

52 fun and hilarious road trip games! [2024]

By: Author Megan Singleton

Posted on Last updated: November 18, 2023

These fun road trip games will keep you and the family going for hours on a long car ride. Literally!

We all know road trips can be long and boring, no matter how excited you are to reach your final destination. So, spice things up by playing one of these fun car games with the gang, or taking some of them with you to play on your vacation.

Whether you are on a car ride, or hurtling down the highway in an RV, or setting up camp for a week and looking for activities to play together, get ready for a whole lot of fun with this list of 52 fun travel games for a road trip!

Because this list is long, here are my favourites to start with: I like 3, 9, 11, 16, 19, 21, 25.

VW combi van on a road trip

We’ve broken these games into categories, so scroll down to the section that works best for you. We’ve got road trip games for kids, road trip games for couples, road trip games for adults – which can do nicely as drinking games too (just saying!)

Oh, and if you’re an Apple Music subscriber, I have uploaded three great playlists in this post that you might like . One is cruisey vibes, one is bangers and the other music-to-smoke-cigars-to!

Some of these games have Amazon links. If you buy from my links I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thank you for your support of my blog!

Classic Road Trip Car Games

Below are some classic long road trip games that the driver can also partake in and join the fun.

Road trip games for kids

Is any road trip complete without a round of the classic game I-Spy? This game would have been played on more family road trips than any other, but I had to list it! In case you don’t know how it goes: One person picks something in sight, and says “I spy with my little eye …” with a clue of what you’re looking at. Then, the remaining players must guess what object they spotted. A great one for little kids.

2 The License Plate Game

The goal of this famous game is to find license plates from each one of America’s 50 states (or if you’re not in America, find a plate starting with A, B, C and go through the alphabet). Since the winner is decided based on who spotted the most, keep track as you go along.

Children in car

3 20 Questions

A fun way to pass the time: pick one object, person, or place, and allow the rest of the players to guess. The rule is answers can only be “yes” or “no” and if it’s not guessed in 20 questions, you win! It is similar to I-Spy, though more ideal for long car rides since your imagination is even more endless than traffic.

4 The Alphabet Game

Keep an eye out for road signs for this one! While going in alphabetical order, shout out every time you see a road sign with the same first letter your group is up to. The winner is the first person to get to letter Z. (This is also a great game to play when watching live sport on TV while the rest of your family cheers for the players!)

Road sign alphabet game

5 Car Bingo

Car bingo consists of marking down notable destinations, signs, emergency vehicles, or animals until you reach “BINGO,” of course! This innovative approach to bingo allows the whole family to play without leaving their car. 6 Punch Buggy

When you spot a Volkswagen Beetle, (lightly!) punch the person next to you, saying, “punch buggy, no punch back.” It is much more challenging to find Beetles on the road in 2023, making this classic road trip game all the more exciting when you actually find one. Besides, who wouldn’t want an excuse to punch their siblings?

7 The Sign Game

Similar to the Alphabet Game, you will want to look for signs/brands along the way in alphabetical order. We suggest pulling over when you can, as the state signs boast great photo opportunities you can look back on after your road trip is over. Someone pick which sign you’re looking for next, and first to spot it wins.

8 Name The Artist

This simple yet fun road trip game is perfect for music lovers! The first person to correctly answer the name of the artist or group playing on the radio scores a point. And no using Shazam to cheat!

You might also like this post on the best travel quotes – and come up with some of your own!

9 In My Suitcase

This memory game is on theme and so easy to play. The first player begins by stating, “I’m going on vacation, and I packed…,” with an object starting with the letter A. The second person adds to the list alphabetically, still repeating the original items listed beforehand, and so on for each player. The first person to mess up the packing order loses the game!

10 Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Ditch car bingo and, instead, embark on a road trip scavenger hunt that lasts throughout your whole trip. This game may require making some stops, depending on what you list in your scavenger hunt. For example, some choose to put items like “coffee from a rest stop” on their list.  This game can be prepared in advance by very organized parents!

11 Who Am I?

Choose a famous person, whether a historical figure or celebrity and have the other players guess who you are. It is similar to 20 Questions, though this time, the original player is a person. You can determine whether they must be living, or include historic people.

Imagination Road Trip Games

Some of the best car ride games call for using your imagination. A great excuse to put down the tech and challenge each other. The options below are perfect for all ages.

12 Telephone Whisper Game

This is fun to play for all ages, and the bigger the group the better. Someone makes up a story and whispers it to the next person, they then whisper it to the next player and so on, until the last person is reached who then tells out loud what they heard. Play it on the plane, in the classroom, in the car!

13 The Categories Game

This famous word game, also known as Scattergories, consists of choosing a category, such as an animal, city, or sport. Then, you and the remaining players will list words that fit into said category in alphabetical order. Once someone cannot think of a word, the players will move on to the next round.

14 Mad Libs

Mad Libs is a classic, imaginative game in the form of a fill-in-the-blank book. There are numerous editions to choose from, such as  Mad Libs On The Road , featuring stories about road trips, car songs, and historical sights. You select a bunch of your own nouns, adjectives and adverbs, then write them in order on the blank spaces in the pre-written story. Crazy funny.

15  Spot The Cracker Barrel

While this is not a traditional road trip game, my family and I used to count how many signs for Cracker Barrel we would see driving from the East Coast to Florida. Whoever spots the most when you reach your destination wins a free breakfast at your next Cracker Barrel pit stop! Since there are a bunch of these restaurants across the United States, we are sure you can keep the game going the entire drive. Or, swap Cracker Barrel out for McDonalds!

16  The Movie Game

You will adore this imaginative road trip game if you are a movie buff who loves The Alphabet Game. The first player will suggest a letter. Then, each player must name a movie that starts with the corresponding letter of the Alphabet.

17  Count The Animals Game

Before your road trip, choose an animal that you want to keep an eye out for on the road. Popular choices include seagulls, deer (tough one), geese, and squirrels. Once you spot the animal, shout it out. The first person to do so scores a point. When you reach your final destination, the person with the most points wins the game!

Cute squirrel

18  Two Truths and a Lie

This one might not work well for family members, but is a fun one to play even just sitting around the campfire with mates: Test how well you know your friends by catching them in a lie. Each player reveals two truthful statements and one lie. It is then up to the others to guess which was the lie. If you get the answer right, you get the point. But if you guess wrong, the player who lied receives the point (or a drink – if you’re not driving that is!)

19  Road Trip Olympics

Kids (and adults) can get restless after spending hours in the car. So, make your rest stops more fun by turning them into the Road Trip Olympics! Select a challenge to try playing at each stop, whether push-ups, jumping jacks, or something else. Tally up who got the most wins to award the gold!

20  Color Search

Choose a color at the start of your road trip. Then, keep an eye out for any objects, signs, or cars in that shade, like red fire hydrants. Shout it out once you see it to ensure you score a point. Most players tend to stick with cars to keep the game more challenging, especially if you choose a random color like purple, which is rare in cars. Great for younger kids.

Fun Word Games

21  triple threat  .

Triple Threat is the ultimate imaginative road trip game. Let the driver start by naming three random things off the top of their head; the remaining players must use those words to create a story. Think Mad-Libs, but in real life (and with less context)!

22  The Grocery Game

Don’t play this game if you’re hungry! The first player will choose an item they would find at a grocery store while the remaining players attempt to guess what it is by asking a question. For example, they might ask, “Is it something in the produce aisle?” The initial player can only answer with “yes” or “no.” The person who guesses it correctly wins.

Grocery store for grocery game

23  Would You Rather

This easy game can be as short or as long as you want. Simply ask your fellow passengers, “Would You Rather…” followed by a question. The questions tend to be outlandish, which keeps things interesting. I’m not going to lie, this also makes a great party game with a couple of drinks! Would you rather have a broken leg or a broken arm, have no ears or no nose…

24  Name The Most

Start with a category (like capital cities, beaches, cake flavors, candy bars), and see which player can name the most corresponding items during their turn. Whoever runs out of related words to say loses that round. If you really want to make things interesting, cap the time to 30 seconds per player. Then, the score is based on who named the most items during that time.

25  Fortunately, Unfortunately

This is my favorite road trip game. Similar to Triple Threat, players will take turns telling one story when playing this game. However, each player must begin or end each sentence with “fortunately” or “unfortunately,” which the next person then builds on. This game results in lots of unforeseen plot twists!

26 Starter For 10 Drawing Game

I made this game up when I was kid. Each person starts with a blank piece of paper and one person draws a crazy shape on their paper, then traces it onto everyone else’s piece of paper. You all have 1 minute to turn that shape into something. Add eyes, limbs, wheels, hats. It’s the time limit that adds the pressure. Such fun!

Scribble head drawing

25  The Counting Game

The Counting Game is simple and exciting. Each player states a number, aiming to be the first player to reach 20. Players may only say one to three numbers at a time in chronological order. So player one starts and says “1,2,3” the second player has to start from “4” but could just stop there. There next player starts with “5” and could say “5,6,7” – it’s all strategic to see who is the player who gets to say “20”.

28  Guess Whose Playlist

Instead of assigning Aux to one passenger, compile a list of everyone’s favorite songs and guess whose playlist it came from. It is a great way to learn more about your friends’ music tastes and gives everyone a chance to sing along. Plus, playing this game is even easier with the help of Spotify’s  remote group sessions , allowing your friends to share and upload songs to the shared playlist.

Card Games for Road Trips

Check out the terrific card game options below, from regular ol’ playing cards to immersive card games. These games are good fun for RV road trips, but most don’t need to lay the cards down so can work for the long car ride too.

29   Blackjack

Who says you can only play this classic card game in the Casino? The goal of Blackjack is to reach 21, or as close as you can to it. If your cards total more than 21, you will bust. If no players hit 21, the player with the closest total receives the point.

30   Carpool Chaos

Carpool Chaos is an exciting card game designed with long road trips in mind. The 160 playing cards feature actions, hypothetical questions, and group challenges. Even the driver can participate in the fun since none of these challenges require physical movement.

Family in car on road trip

31   Do You Really Know Your Family?

See how well your family really knows each other with this fun card game! Cards either contain a trivia question or challenge that involves the entire group. If anyone guesses wrong or fails to complete their challenge, they lose their card.

32  Go Fish

Go Fish is the perfect card game for young children since it is so easy to follow. A player will ask for a card, saying, “Do you have the queen of hearts.” The rule is that the asker or “fisher” must have at least one card in the same suit in their personal pile. If the other player does not have the requested card, they will “go fish” by drawing a card from the main deck.

33  Hearts

All players receive the same amount of cards and begin to take turns following suit, starting with the 2 of clubs. You can play the next highest card if you do not have the same suit. The Queen of Spades and heart cards cannot be played in the first round. Instead, they can reveal heart cards later when they do have the same suit, “breaking” the heart.

34   Cards Against Humanity

“A party game for horrible people”! The goal of Cards Against Humanity is to have the funniest answer to the black prompt cards using terms from the white cards dealt. The person who picked up the black card is in charge of choosing the winner, alternating with each player. Note, this card game is recommended for teens and adults since answers are sometimes a bit naughty. That being said, you can also check out this family-friendly version,  Kids Against Maturity .

35   Slapjack

This family-friendly version of Blackjack is even more fun than the original. Each player is dealt cards until the deck disappears. These cards should be kept hidden from the other players, gradually taking one out per turn. Once a jack enters the center, the first player to slap the card collects it and the cards underneath. The first person to lose their cards has one last shot at winning if another jack is revealed in the central pile.

36   “Shotgun!” The Road Trip Game

Much like Carpool Chaos, this game was designed for road trips. Each card presents an action or question, including some dashboard-friendly cards to keep the driver involved. Since it’s a part of the What Do You Meme? Family, we are sure your group will giggle the whole car ride.

37  Trivia

Trivia is an excellent way to stay entertained on road trips, especially for those who binge TV shows like Jeopardy. Various trivia card decks are available online, from classic  Trivial Pursuit  to family-friendly  All of Us .

38   UNO

UNO has been a personal favorite game of mine for as long as I can remember. Each player is dealt seven cards, taking turns playing or picking up cards if nothing matches. However, things get more interesting when players start to throw down “Skip,” “Draw 2,” “Reverse,” and “Draw 4” cards. When you have one card remaining, shout “Uno” before the other players catch on or risk picking up another card from the deck, starting the whole process over.

39   Taco vs. Burrito

Developed by a 7-year-old named Alex, this exciting yet strategic card game is perfect for travelers of all ages. Cards either contain an action or “food” item for extra points. It is super fun to play, especially when you pull out a “food fight” card!

40   We’re Not Really Strangers

Are you looking to get deep on the road? If so, you and your partner, family, or friend group will enjoy the “We’re Not Really Strangers” interactive adult card game, in which each card poses a question or activity. These questions are divided into three levels: Perception, Connection, and Reflection.

Board Games for Road Trips

While board games may not be the best option for a traditional car road trip, they come in handy when traveling by RV. These games are fantastic for keeping your kids (or yourself) engaged longer on the road.

41   Connect Four

Connect Four is always fun, regardless of your age. Each player aims to match four colored discs in a row (up, across or diagonally) before the other, alternating turns every time. If nobody succeeds, you start again until someone wins! There is also a mini version of Connect Four which will work better in the car.

Kids playing Connect Four

42   Hedbanz, Blast Off!

This board game takes the classic “What Am I?” up a notch. All players wear headbands with cards stating what they are. Then, you take turns to help each other guess what item is on your headband’s card.

43   Monopoly

While this game may be infamous for causing fights, a game of Monopoly will keep your group entertained for at least two hours (unless someone flips the board). We usually do not suggest bringing board games with many tiny pieces on the road. Still, this iconic board game deserves an exception. Or you can get a magnetic version!

44   Jenga

This simple game consists of removing blocks and re-stacking them until the entire structure comes crashing down. Whoever causes the drop is the loser of the game. What’s even better, you can invest in a  giant Jenga set made of wood that stands three feet tall to double as an outdoor game at your campsite.

Toy playing jenga

45   Pictionary

One of my favourite all time games! Pictionary has remained a popular game since the mid-1980s. It is pretty similar to charades, but with drawing rather than acting out. Plus, it is the one drawing game where being a mediocre artist actually pays off since the other players might have trouble guessing your answer.

46   Memory Match Game: Summer Camp Edition

Memory matching games are ideal for the little ones. This camping and wilderness theme version features tons of items you will likely encounter around your campground (except the bear card, hopefully).

47   The Upside Down Challenge

This game may have nothing to do with the Upside Down in  Stranger Things,  but it is equally as entertaining. Players take chances wearing special upside-down goggles, competing in tasks against their fellow players to see if their vision makes things more complicated.

Mobile App Games You Can Play On The Road

I know most of us like to unplug on camping and road trips. However, these interactive mobile games are a great way to entertain the entire family on their devices until you reach your final destination!

48   Heads Up

This famous mobile game, created by Ellen Degeneres, consists of holding your phone over your head (with the app open, unveiling a series of cards like in Hedbanz). At the same time, fellow players help you guess what the card says. The other players cannot use the term when providing you with clues. There are many categories available, from animals to celebrities to miming actions. Plus, the app records your fellow players, meaning you can look back on the hilarious memories made while playing.

49  Duolingo

Home schooling on the road! Improve your language skills while on your road trip using this popular (and free) mobile app, Duolingo. Lessons are straightforward and entertaining. It is available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

50   Findery

While Findery is not technically a road trip game, it is a useful app for documenting your trip photos and locating points of interest nearby. So, instead of doing deep-dive Google searches of the town you plan to stop in, learn all about it on Findery! A good one for curious passengers who want to educate everyone as you drive.

51   Trivia Crack

This colorful and straightforward mobile trivia game is a great way to keep your children busy during long car rides. The questions are super easy and can be upgraded to more challenging for older kids and adults. You can also play on a TV or iPad screen through Netflix’s version,  Trivia Quest .

52   Wordle

Have you played Wordle yet? New York Times bought Wordle from an English man who created it years ago and it’s among the most trending online game right now. The goal is to correctly guess the daily word based on the number of letters available. Now, this game may not keep you entertained for the entire car ride, but it is an excellent way to see who your group’s wordsmith is.

Ten Drinking Games to Entertain You on Your Travels

There is probably no other period in your life when you’ll have more spare time than when you’re backpacking. And when the sights have been seen, your book has been read, all the hostel movies exhausted, and the nightlife has drained every last dollar out of your budget, how do you fill those extra hours?

Drinking games.

Ok, so that’s not how everyone fills their backpacking spare time – trip planning, getting an early night, engaging in long philosophical discussions, or simply staring at your belly button also rank as pretty good time fillers. But sometimes there is nothing like some short, sharp drinking fun to get a party started or fill a rainy evening stuck in the hostel kitchen.

Find some likeminded playmates, locate the cheapest booze you can find (a game in its own right) and check out these ten drinking games. I can’t promise they will enhance your life in any way, but you may end up with an extra story or two to tell when you get back home.

Note: for the non-drinkers, all of these games can be played without drinking alcohol, so there’s no need to feel left out.

Essential equipment for all drinking games : a camera to help you remember the course of the evening and a hostel that isn’t against the idea of a party.

road trip drinking games

  • Enough spoons for every player apart from one.
  • Deck of cards.

How to play:

Arrange the spoons in the middle of the table in a circular shape, making sure everyone can reach. Deal four to seven cards face down to each player to start (the fewer cards each person receives, the longer the game will take). Each player should look only at their own cards. The dealer then selects cards one at a time from the remaining, non-dealt cards and decides whether he wants to keep the card and discard one of his own or pass the new card to his right. The person on the right does the same and so on around the group. The aim is to keep turning over, discarding and passing on new cards until someone ends up with four of a kind.

When someone has four of a kind, they reach for a spoon, which is the prompt for the rest of the players to grab a spoon as quickly as they can. The person left without a spoon incurs a drinking penalty.

The key to this game is speed.

2. Cereal box game

road trip drinking games

  • Empty cereal box.
  • A course in flexibility.

Take an empty cereal box and place it on the floor. In turn, each player must bend over and pick the box up with their teeth. Sounds easy? There is one extra rule: the only part of the body that can touch the floor while attempting to pick up the box is one or both soles of the feet. Every failed attempt or additional body part that touches the floor incurs a drinking penalty. People can try each round as many times as they want. Once everyone has picked up the box or the unsuccessful people have admitted defeat, an inch (couple of centimetres) should be cut or ripped away from the top of the box. The game continues until there is nothing more than the base of the box left. Then you’ll be hoping for a sticky tongue to help you get the cardboard off the floor.

road trip drinking games

  • Three coins per person.
  • One large mug.

Each player places their hands behind their back and shuffles zero to three coins into their right hand. The players then hold their right hand out, fist closed, concealing the number of coins they possess and the game begins. Going clockwise the players each have to guess how many coins are collectively held by the group. No two players are allowed make the same guess. When everyone has made their bid, the coins are revealed and the person who guessed correct (or closest) is out and adds part of his or her drink to the mug. The game continues until there is an ultimate loser who must drink the contents of the mug.

4. Drug dealer

road trip drinking games

Sort the deck of cards so there is one King, one Ace and one numbered card for each of the remaining players. Deal the cards face down. Each player should discreetly look at their card to see if they are the King (the Drug Dealer), the Ace (the Cop) or a numbered card (a Bystander). The aim is for the Drug Dealer to secretly “kill” the Bystanders one at a time by winking at them. When winked at, the bystanders must declare themselves out (dramatically faking death is to be encouraged). Meanwhile it is the Cop’s job to detect who the Drug Dealer is. For every Bystander that is killed without the Cop catching the Dealer, the Cop must take a drink. If the Drug Dealer “kills” the Cop, the Drug Dealer must finish the contents of their drink.

Once again, the key to this game is speed, otherwise the Bystanders will get bored pretty quickly.

5. Beer Pong

road trip drinking games

  • 22 cups gathered from around your hostel or cheap disposable plastic cups.
  • 1 ping pong ball.
  • A reasonably long table.

Fill 20 of the cups with a drinkable amount of beer and arrange them in a triangle shape with rows of  four cups, three, then two, and one cup at the front. The triangles of cups should be at opposite ends of the table. Fill the 2 remaining cups with water for rinsing the ping pong ball and give one to each side of the table. The aim is to throw the ping pong ball across the table and into one of the beer filled cups. If you get the ball into one of the cups, your opponent has to drink the contents of the cup until one team has drunk all of the contents of the cups. The game is best played in two teams of three to help share the drinking. In the interests of remaining friends with your new hostel mates, rinse the ball in the water cup if it bounces on the floor. More complicated rules can be added including removing cups, defending and bouncing the ball as you prefer.

The bonus of this game is that it is as much fun to watch as it is to play.

6. Bottle Balance

road trip drinking games

  • Deck of cards (the good news is that for this game the pack doesn’t need to be complete).
  • Bottle of alcohol, ideally a liter for height purposes.

Balance the deck of cards on top of the bottle. Every player must take turns blowing at the cards with the intention of blowing at least one or more off the top of the bottle. The person who topples the whole deck or the last card off the bottle incurs a drinking penalty. If you want to add alternative fun, you can substitute drinking penalties for forfeits, or if you’re feeling particularly daring and want to get more friendly with your hostel mates, the penalty can be an item of clothing.

The best part about this game is its utter simplicity.

7. Hundreds/Century Club

road trip drinking games

Warning: this is a pretty serious drinking game and should come with a health warning…or at least an exclusion of liability…but we’re all grown-ups, so we’ll let you take your own counsel on whether you want to play this game.

  • Shot glass for each player.
  • A watch or phone with a second counter.

This game is all about endurance. The rules are very simple – to drink one shot of beer on the minute, every minute for 100 minutes (around 6 to 8 cans of beers depending on the size of shot you pour). The aim is to be the person who can drink for the longest time. A player becomes disqualified if they can no longer drink or do not hold their alcohol inside (includes using the bathroom or the beer coming back the way it went in).

If you want a tamer version of this game, reduce the number of shots played and/or mix the beer with lemonade – a whole different challenge as the combined bubbles work to fill you up faster. Whatever you do, don’t try this with spirits. Trust me on that one.

8. Ring of Fire

road trip drinking games

  • Paper and pen.

Fan the cards out face down so that they form a circle with every card touching one other. Take the paper and pen and create a list of rules with one rule relevant for each card number. You can be as creative as you like, but some common rules/suggestions are below. The idea is that each person, going clockwise, selects a card and then must comply with the rule that applies to the card:

  • 2 to 8 red: drink the number of sips shown on the card.
  • 2 to 8 black: designate someone else to drink the number of sips shown on the card.
  • 9: rhyme – select a work and proceed around the group saying a word that rhymes with the chosen word until someone fails to do so e.g. bar, car etc. The person who breaks the rhyme incurs a drinking penalty.
  • 10: categories – select a category and proceed around the group naming something from that category until someone fails to do so e.g. fruits: apple, pear etc. The person who fails to name something from the category incurs a drinking penalty.
  • Jack: create a rule – when a person selects a Jack they must set a new rule e.g. no drinking with the left hand.
  • Queen: dance moves – the person selecting Queen must makes up a dance move. Going clockwise, the next person must perform that move and add their own. Each following person must perform the moves from the people before them and add their own until someone is unable to complete the sequence. The person who fails to complete the full sequence of dance moves incurs a drinking penalty.
  • King: Kind of cups – this is where the cup in the middle comes into play. Each person who selects a King contributes part of their drink to the cup in the middle. The person who selects the last King has to drink the contents of the mug.
  • Ace: Waterfall – each player starts to drink at the same time and must continue to drink until the person who selected the card stops.

There is plenty of potential for applying new rules to numbers 2 to 8 and new rules will be added as the Jacks are drawn. Any player that breaks the ring i.e. leaves any cards not touching, incurs a drinking penalty.

9. I have never

road trip drinking games

  • Nothing more than a good dose of honesty.

This is a great game for getting to know your fellow hostel mates. A person starts by saying “I have never…” and completing the sentence with a statement e.g. “I have never…been to Australia.” Every other person who has done the thing stated e.g. been to Australia – must take a drink. Speed is the key to this game as is imagination – it usually doesn’t take too long for the “I have never…” statements to become much more interesting.

road trip drinking games

Those good at math will enjoy this game. Everyone else will get drunk.  Starting with one player and moving clockwise around the group, the aim is simply to keep counting from one upwards until someone goes wrong. The complication is that the word “buzz” must be said instead of the following numbers:

  • Any number with a 7 in it e.g. 7, 17, 27
  • Any double number e.g. 11, 22, 33
  • Any multiple of 7 e.g. 7, 14, 21

Play fast and apply a drinking penalty to anyone who gets it wrong.

And now for the important stuff:

Drinking can be a fun activity but it can also turn a great night into something you come to regret. So, to keep it fun:

  • Do make sure you drink responsibly.
  • Don’t let the peer pressure take you beyond your usual drinking limits.
  • Add some water into the drinking mix (it will also help keep hangovers at bay).
  • And don’t forget to eat to soak up the alcohol.

Whether you bookmark this page, print it out, or commit it to memory, when the rain is coming down or all other activities are exhausted and someone asks, “Does anyone know any drinking games?” – you’ll be prepared.

If you’ve got any others to share, let me know in the comments below.

If you’ve ever been on a road trip, you know that at some point boredom becomes inevitable. But as you may also know, road trip games offer one of the best ways to entertain kids and preserve your sanity on lengthy car journeys.

So, to help you pass the time during long car rides, we’ve curated a list of some of the best road trip games for kids, adults, and couples.

Ready to give your road trips a boost of entertainment? Keep on reading!

Friends on a road trip

A word of caution:  If you’re driving, please keep your eyes on the road and let your passengers engage in gameplay!

Road Trip Games for Kids

Kids are the first to get bored on car journeys, so it seems only fitting to list the best kid-friendly car ride games first.

The Alphabet Game

The Alphabet Game is all about spotting letters of the alphabet from outside the window.

If you’ve never played this favorite road trip game before, you simply need to check out billboards, license plates, and signs to identify the letters you need, starting from A .

You can either play individually to see who spots all 26 letters first or work as a group and time yourselves.

Alphabet game

Fortunately and Unfortunately

Fortunately and Unfortunately is all about thinking up fortunate and unfortunate situations.

One of the passengers starts the game by coming up with a sentence. Then, each person will add a sentence to the story when it’s their turn. However, the catch is that they must start that sentence with fortunately or unfortunately , alternating with each person.

For example:

Hannah got a new puppy. Unfortunately , the puppy ran away. Fortunately , Hannah’s next-door neighbors found the puppy eating their cat’s food. Unfortunately , the cat wasn’t too happy and chased the puppy down the street.

As I’m sure you can imagine, this game can go on for hours.  And with kids’ imaginations thrown into the mix, you’ll end up with some wild and wacky stories that they no doubt will find extremely entertaining.

Hypotheticals

A great way to truly get to know your family and waste some time on road trips is to ask hypothetical questions.

These questions could be anything that springs to mind, like “What superpowers would you love to have?”. Or, “If you could have any pet, what would it be?”

If you’ve never played I-Spy , you must have been living under a rock. This classic road trip game is all about you finding an item and giving the other passengers the first letter of said item .

Younger children may need some additional clues, such as the object’s size, color, or position.

If you’ve chosen a car as your object, then repeat after me:

I-Spy with my little eye, something beginning with… C

Don’t Say It

If you’re really smart, you can use this game to your advantage. To play Don’t Say It , one parent comes up with 3 – 5 words no one can say in the car. You can make the rule valid for the entire journey, until you reach a certain place, or the next time you stop for gas.

Give the children 10 points each; if they happen to say one of the forbidden words on the trip, deduct a point . The child with the most points at the end is the winner.

Of course, you can extend the rule to the adult passengers, too.

Don't Say It Game

I’m Going on a Picnic

I’m Going on a Picnic can be a hard one to grasp, and although it is classed as a game, it really gets your kid’s brains working.

The story behind the game is that you’re going on a picnic. Now, each person has to add an item to the picnic basket; but each subsequent item must start with the next letter of the alphabet. This may seem easy, but the players also have to remember the letters that came before them.

For example:

Person 1: I’m going on a picnic and taking apples.

Person 2: I’m going on a picnic and taking apples and bananas.

Person 3: I’m going on a picnic and taking apples, bananas, and carrots.

Person 4: I’m going on a picnic and taking apples, bananas, carrots, and dates.

And so on. Keep repeating and adding on a letter until someone forgets the sequence.

In My Suitcase

In My Suitcase is another memory game including letters of the alphabet. Instead of listing things they’d take to a picnic, have the kids list things they’d pack in their suitcase .

This game is even more fun when you’re heading on a vacation, so to begin the game, get your children started with the letter “a”:

“I’m going on vacation, and I packed an adapter in my suitcase.”

Let’s Go to the Store

Let’s Go to the Store is fairly similar to I’m Going on a Picnic and In My Suitcase , but if you’ve exhausted the first 2, you could give it a try.

Each person is pretending that they’re going to the store to buy something.

The first player needs to purchase an item beginning with “a” (in most cases, this will be “apples”). The next play will be going to the store to get apples and an item beginning with “b”. Keep playing until someone messes up the sequence.

The License Plate Game

You can play The License Plate Game in a number of ways.

The first way is to go through the alphabet from A-Z and try to spot the chosen letters on license plates . Once you’ve gone through the alphabet, you can reverse the order and go from Z to A.

Older or more advanced players can even try and spell out words from a combination of license plates in their view. And if you’re driving down a particularly isolated stretch and there aren’t any license plates around, you can also play this game with road signs.

The second way to play is to try and spot a license plate from each of the 50 states of America. Once someone has spotted a plate from a state, write it down and see who can tally up the most.

Name That Tune

This game doesn’t require you to be musically gifted, but it does require you to have general knowledge of songs and their artists.

To play, each person can hum 5 to 10 seconds of a song, which the remaining passengers must try to guess . Tally up the points and see who wins!

Punch Buggy

Now, I’m not sure how many VW Bugs are around these days, but this game is a classic nonetheless.

While driving along, keep an eye out for any VW bugs on the road. If you’re the first to spot one, you get to punch the person next to you . If you don’t have a car full of boisterous daredevil boys, you can switch the punching out for something else.

Along with simply spotting a VW Bug, you can also put some other rules into play. Some ideas could be: If you see a yellow VW Bug, everyone needs to tap their head. If you see a blue VW Bug, everyone needs to clap. If you see a red VW Bug, everyone needs to pull a funny face. The last person to perform the action loses a point.

Punch Buggy Game

Rock, Paper, Scissors

Rock, Paper, Scissors is an absolute classic both in the car and out.

Pound your first three times before displaying a rock, paper, or scissors with your first. Rock is your fist closed. Paper is your hand flat. And scissors are your index and middle fingers in a sideways peace sign.

Paper beats rock.

Rock beats scissors.

Scissors beat paper.

Triple Threat

Next on our road trip car games list is the game Triple Threat . Choose 3 nouns and have the children create a story including all 3 words. Don’t expect these stories to be serious; kids’ imaginations can be wild.

20 Questions

20 Questions is a fun game where one person thinks of an object, place, or person .

Let’s say you’ve chosen an umbrella. The other people in the car can ask up to 20 questions to try and figure out what object you’re thinking about . They could ask questions such as: “Is it an animal?”, “Can you hold it in your hand?”, “Is it small?”, “Is it red?”

You can only answer yes or no, and if they can’t figure out the answer in 20 questions, they lose, and you get the point.

What Color is It?

Choose a color and list items of the said color. For example, green: “Apples, grass, broccoli, leaves…” While you’re saying the words out loud, the kids need to try and guess the color as fast as they can . Whoever guesses right gets a point!

What color is it game

In a way, Who Am I? is like 20 Questions , but this car game only focuses on people. Think of a person and let the other passengers ask you “yes” or “no” questions about the said person. Remember, your answers can only be “yes” or “no”!

Who Can Name the Most?

Choose a category and go around the car to see how many items you can think of that belong to it. “Characters from Movie X ” is a great category for little children, especially if it’s a movie they particularly love.

Let’s take Frozen — which is, by far, a favorite — as an example. The kids could come up with Elsa, Ana, Sven, Olaf, Kristoff, Hans, and well, I feel that list is quite endless.

Some other categories could include colors, fruits, vegetables, clothes, and countries.

Would You Rather

I personally love this game, especially when playing it with children. Kids can let their imagination run wild asking other people in the car if they would rather do action A or action B .

Would you rather go to space or go to the deepest part of the ocean? Would you rather be rich or have superpowers? Would you rather have an elephant or a lion as a pet?

Word Association

Word Association is another one of our fun road trip games that can go on for hours. To play, the first player thinks of a word. It could be anything, but let’s go with “blue.”

The next person then needs to think of a word that’s associated with “blue,” and so forth: Blue, ocean, fish, swim, pool, water, drink.

You get the idea.

Road Trip Games for Adults

Fun car games aren’t just for kids, and if you’re heading out on a long car ride, try and relieve some boredom with these fun travel games.

Name the Artist

Crank up the radio and see who can guess the artist or group singing the song . The person who accumulates the most points by the time you reach your destination wins.

You could also create a playlist beforehand to make this game even more challenging. Our personal favorite has 2,000+ hits.

Never Have I Ever

If you’re over the legal drinking age, then you’ve most likely heard of this game before. But, as you’ll be driving in a car, it’s best to skip the alcohol and just enjoy finding out embarrassing facts about your friends .

Never Have I Ever Game

To play, everyone takes it in turns to make statements starting with “ never have I ever …”. The other people in the car then need to try and guess if this person is telling the truth or a lie.

Although we’ve put this game into the adult category, you can also play Twenty-One with children who are good with math.

To play, take turns to say numbers up to twenty-one. You can choose to say either 1, 2, or 3 numbers at a time.

The end goal is not to be the person saying 21.

The first person says “1, 2,” the next person says “4, 5, 6,” and the player after that could continue with “7, 8, 9.” Fast forward until one of the players lists “18, 19, 20,” forcing the last person to speak to finally say “21”.

Two Truths and One Lie

Not only is Two Truths and One Lie a great game to play to kill some time, but it also allows you to get to know your fellow passengers.

The rules are fairly simple. One person starts by telling 3 statements. Two of them must be true, while the third one should be false. Everyone else in the car then needs to guess which statement was the lie .

It sounds simple enough. But, the person making the statements can change subtle details to mask their lie or give the true statement a deceitful feel.

While You Were Sleeping

We all have that friend that can fall asleep anytime, anyplace. And if that friend so happens to be in the car with you on your road trip , you can have some fun playing While You Were Sleeping .

Once you know for certain they’ve fallen asleep, make up a story with your fellow passengers . You can all take turns adding parts to the story, but you have to make sure that it’s somewhat believable.

When the person wakes up, you all need to try and convince them that this story actually happened . Come up with a dare for the person who gets caught in a lie.

Road Trip Games for Couples

Some of the games we’ve listed today can be played with only 2 players, but there are a few more we want to throw your way.

Carry On the Song

This game can be played with any number of players, but we find 2 players is the perfect amount.

The rules are straightforward: Player One has to sing the first line of a song of their choice. Player Two then has to sing the next line and so on. The first person to mess up the song loses.

Change the Movie Game

Entertaining and somewhat hilarious is the Change the Movie Game . Think of a movie and remove or change one letter to change the movie’s entire title.

Here are some of our favorites: Harry Otter , Finding Emo , Mortal Wombat , Lady and the Cramp , and Lizard of Oz .

Although it might be slightly morbid, one of our favorite fun games for couples is My Cows . You can only really play this game if you’re driving through areas with livestock because, well, you aren’t going to be sighting any cows in the city center.

To play, you need to keep your eyes peeled for cows. The first person to spot some and shout “MY COWS!” gets a point. Once you passed those cows, another point is up for grabs at the next cow sighting.

Now, what makes this game slightly morbid is the fact that if you drive past a cemetery, and you’re sitting on the side of the car where that cemetery is, you lose all your points.

Once you reach your destination, the person with the most points is the winner.

Cows game

Word Blogger

This word game is fantastic for only 2 people as it really gets your brain going. Start off the game with a 3- or 4-letter word and see how many words you can make out of it. For example, if you choose the starting word “art,” you could then follow it up with any of the following: start, mart, cart, fart, dart, spartan, apartment, and so on.

Take turns to say a word until someone runs out of ideas and loses. This game can also be played with a more players, which, in most cases, adds fire to the contest.

Printable and Paper-Based Road Trip Games

These next few games require some prepping, or the simple tools like a pen and paper. We suggest packing a small pencil case of car-friendly markers and having some paper on hand.

Road Trip Bingo

You’ll need to do some preparation here, but Road Trip Bingo is an excellent way to keep kids entertained and alert throughout your car journey.

To start, print off a bingo sheet and arm your kids with pens. As you drive along, get them to cross out the objects as they see them. The first to get a full row — or the entire card — wins.

Tic Tac Toe

We’ve all played Tic Tac Toe at some point in our lives, and if you’ve got a pen and paper to hand, your kids can easily play it in the back of the car.

Draw out a few 3-by-5 grids, and ask the children to place an “X” or an “O” in whichever box they choose. The first person to get 3 of the same characters in a row wins.

Alternatively, you can buy a Tic Tac Toe game set; this may be a better option if you’d rather not use the pen while the car is in motion.

The Dot Game

Another fun game that requires a pen and paper is The Dot Game .

To prep, draw some dots on a piece of paper. Then, take turns to draw a line connecting 2 dots together . The aim of the game is to use your lines to close a square. Once you’ve closed a square, put your initial inside to claim it.

If you’ve just claimed a square, you get to go again and draw another line. This game starts off easy, but as it progresses, you need to put a strategy in place. Drawing the third line of the soon-to-be square will end up with your opponent drawing the fourth line and claiming the box. So, if you can, try and avoid drawing in that third line.

Once all the boxes are complete, count up the initials and see who won.

21 Fun Drinking Games You Can Play in Any Bar

G oing to the bar is a communal experience. There are friends new and old and plenty of drinks to keep the conversation flowing. Occasionally, though, you hit a point where you just have nothing to say. That’s where drinking games come in.

These are the best drinking games you can play without being a nuisance, and are equally suitable for your next bachelor or bachelorette party . Many take no extra materials other than your mind and a drink in hand, while others require easy to find objects.

Drinking games you don’t need cards to play

Sometimes you want to play drinking games and you have nothing on hand. There’s always the games on your phone, of course, but a face-to-face, person-to-person is a much better option when you’re at the bar.

1. Most likely

Number of people: Four or more, and just like for most drinking games without cards… the more the better

Rules: One person asks the group who they think is most likely to do something. For example, “Who would be most likely to buy a plane ticket to a random locale?” or “Who would be most likely to be caught sneaking an illegal drink from a mini on a plane?” Then, on the count of three, each person in the group points to the person they think would be most likely to do said question. Anyone who is pointed at takes a drink for however many fingers are directed at them (four sips for four fingers, for example).

2. I’m going on a picnic

Number of people: Three or more, and the more the better

Rules: Pick someone to start. That person begins the game with the statement, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing a blanket” (blanket can be whatever the person thinks is picnic worthy). The next person says, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing” with their own addition plus whatever was said before them. Each person following repeats the statement until someone messes up, and that person takes a drink. Additionally, if the group agrees that whatever the person says they are bringing isn’t picnic appropriate, the person drinks. This game can be played with anything switched out for picnic as well, such as going to the bar, going to a dance party, and so on.

Number of people: Four or more, and the more the better

Rules: Sit at a table where everyone can see all of the other players. Each player puts their head down. On the count of three, everyone raises their head and stares directly at someone else. If you lock eyes with someone, yell Medusa and the person who says it last takes a drink. You’re in the clear if you don’t lock eyes.

4. Cheers to the governor

People clinking glasses playing drinking games

Rules: Sit in a circle. In order, the players count from one to 21 and must follow a set of rules. The first rule is that the numbers “seven” and “11” are switched, so the count goes, “six, 11, eight” and so on. When the group hits 21, everyone says, “Cheers to the governor.” The person who 21 landed on gets to make a new rule that people must follow, like requiring people to make an animal noise when they say the number 15, for example. Then it starts over from one and the rules carry over until every number has a rule.

5. Never have I ever

Rules: Each person holds their hand out with five fingers up. Pick a person to start, and that person begins a statement with “Never have I ever” and finishes it with something they haven’t done before. Anyone who has done that thing puts a finger down and takes a drink. Words of caution: This game can get rowdy and dirty, and the more times you play with a group the more rowdy and dirty it gets. Just accept the fact that a stranger will leave with some very personal information about you and appreciate the icebreaker.

More like this

Rules: Embrace your inner animal in a very public setting. Each person picks the animal they’d like to be, then makes that animal’s noise and mimics its movements. The next person does their animal business, followed by the person before them. The next person does theirs and the movements of the two people behind them and so on. Any pauses cause a drink and forgetting altogether is either a drink or a shot depending on how well you handle being that loud group of people at the bar making animal movements.

Number of people: Four to eight

Rules: Put a glass in the middle of the group. To start a round, each person puts a single finger on the rim of the glass. A designated person counts from three to zero. After, they guess how many people will leave their finger on the rim. It all happens in a split second. For example, with five people, the person would start the countdown and say “three, two, one, three.” Between one and three, the other players either leave a finger on or take it off. If the guesser got it right, they are out of the game. If wrong, they drink and stay in. Play continues until there’s only one person left. That person finishes the drink that everyone had their fingers on.

8. Drink while you think (also called the name game)

Rules: The group picks a category like celebrities, movie titles, or band names. The first person says a name in that category, like Seth Rogan. The next person has to say a celebrity name where the first name starts with the first letter of the previous person’s option (Rachel McAdams, for example). The catch is that you have to drink continuously until you think of a name that works. If someone says a name where the first and last name start with the same letter, the direction of play reverses.

9. Paranoia

Rules: Pick someone to be the starter. That person whispers a question about the group into the ear of the person on their left (For example, “Who would you never live with?”). The person who was asked the question replies out loud with their answer. If the person whose name was spoken (or anyone curious) wants to know what the question was, they take a drink. The person who said the name can either choose to respond or take a drink instead.

10. Two truths and a lie

Rules: Pick a person to start. That person makes three statements about themselves. Two of the statements are true and one is false. The person to the left has to guess which is the lie. If they’re right, the person who made the lie drinks, and vice versa if they’re wrong.

11. Suffocation

Number of people: Two or more, and the more the better

Rules: Masochism is the name of the game here, if you couldn’t tell by the name, because if you choose to play you’re bound to at one point get uncomfortable. To play, one person starts asking questions to someone else in the group. The questions start out innocuous, like “How old are you?” Then they get increasingly personal, and when it reaches a point when they don’t want to answer, they take a drink.

12. I drink and I know things

Rules: This game is like trivia, but for drinkers. When it comes to a person’s turn, they say “I drink and I know” followed by a statement like know the capital of Arkansas. If anyone in the group knows the answer as well, they blurt it out and everyone else has to drink including the person who started the question. The person who got it right makes the next statement. If no one gets the answer, the group drinks and the asker gets to make another statement about something they know.

13. Westerosi never have I ever

Number of people: Two or more, and the more the better.

Rules: Game of Thrones fans may be familiar with this game and the rules Tyrion Lannister put in place. Each person makes a statement on their turn about another person in the group (“You’ve never seen Game of Thrones,” for example). If it’s true, that person has to drink and you get to make another statement about someone. If it’s false, you drink and it’s the next person’s turn.

Drinking games for two

These drinking games for two are ideal for an awkward first date, or for when you are at a bar with a buddy and just want to liven things up a little. You can add more people to both, just in case others want to join in the fun.

14. If you know what I mean

Number of people: Two or more

Rules: Pick a scenario that two people would be in, like eating at a restaurant or sitting next to each other on the plane. The two people go back and forth with statements that are filled with innuendos yet fit the situation, ending each sentence with “if you know what I mean.” The first person to run out of innuendos drinks.

15. Quarters

Number of people: Two or more.

Rules: Bartenders and bar owners are not usually huge fans of people playing quarters with their glassware, but find a dive and you should be good to go. The goal is to bounce a quarter off the table and into the glass (thick shot glasses work best). Shoot head to head against one other player, and the first person to make it in wins that round and the loser drinks. The next person in line takes over and so on.

Drinking card games

Maybe you’re the type of person who carries a pack of cards on you wherever you go or maybe you’re in a bar gracious enough to lend some out. Either way, your game options just got a lot bigger. These are drinking games that don’t take up too much space and can be (mostly) played without other people at the bar judging.

Rules: In a clockwise circle, each person takes the top card off the deck. When someone grabs the first king, they pick a liquor and the next person continues to draw the next card. The second person to get a king picks a mixer like soda or, depending on how sadistic that person is, something like pickle juice. The game continues until the third person who picks a king, and that person has to go up to the bar and get the mixed drink with the first two ingredients. The person who draws the fourth king has to drink it.

17. Fuck the dealer

Rules: One person starts off as the dealer. The person to the right guesses which card is on the top of the deck. The dealer looks at the card and says whether it’s higher or lower than the person’s guess. The dealer takes two sips if the person guesses right on the first try, and one sip if the second guess is right. If the person can’t guess it, they have to drink the difference between their second guess and the actual card (two sips for example, if the person guessed seven and the card is nine). After every turn, the cards are laid out for everyone to see. The dealer passes on dealer duties after they beat three people in a row.

Bar games played with coins

Quarter for drinking games

Photo: CleanPhoto /Shutterstock

While paying in cash isn’t as prevalent as it was in the past, there’s still a good chance someone has a quarter floating around somewhere. Don’t spend it, play with it.

18. Quarter baseball

Number of people: Six

Rules: Form two teams of three people, and have a row of four shot glasses stretching out vertically. The glass closest to the opposing team is a single, second a double, etc. The player at bat from the first team bounces the quarter and has three strikes to make it in one of the four glasses. When they score, they take a sip for every glass farther out (someone who makes the first, for example, has to take three sips). When a team makes a run, the other team drinks. Each team gets three outs, and the game continues for a set amount of innings depending on how long you want to play.

19. Beer hockey

Number of people: Four or more

Rules: Take turns spinning the quarter. The spinner yells out the name of one of the players, who then becomes the shooter. The rest of the players then form a goal with their pinky and index finger in front of their drink. While the quarter is still spinning, the shooter flicks the quarter to try and score a goal and hit a drink. If a goal is made, everyone picks up their drink and the shooter spins the quarter. The person who was scored on chugs until the quarter stops spinning (either on its own or the shooter can stop it when they want).

Pen and paper

Napkin and pen drinking games without cards

Even bars that lack most things needed for games will have some napkins and a pen you can borrow for drinking games without cards. Here’s how to make sure that pen gets put to more use than signing your check.

20. Drunken artists

Rules: One player keeps the time on their phone or from a clock, while another is the artist who is or is about to become a drunken artist. The time keeper whispers a word to the artist and starts the timer while the artist draws what the word is and the rest of the players try and guess. The timer stops when someone finally gets it. The artist takes one drink for every 20 seconds it took the crowd to figure it out. Think of it like Pictionary, but for bar drinking.

10 Fun Road Trip Games for Couples

Put down the Angry Birds, get off the Grand Theft Auto III and stop playing on Snake. When you’re on a long journey / stuck in an airport / waiting for your taxi to arrive, it’s the perfect time to play mind-expanding retro road trip games for couples, no electricity or batteries required.

road trip couple games playing cards

A road trip is the perfect way for couples to spend quality time with each other while having fun! There are plenty of card games that you can play with your significant other on a long drive. In this article I’ll list some of my favourite car games for couples. You don’t have to be bored when you’re driving across country. Instead, you can use this time and make it part of the holiday.

Here are the best road trip games for couples

From trivia quizzes to revealing, drinking games, there are lots of fun games couples can play in the car.

1. A-Z pubs and bars

It’s just like the age old name-something-beginning-with- every-letter game, but with a twist. In the A-Z of pubs and bars you should create a name for your bar/pub, and then explain their unique selling point and explain the concept around your drinking establishment. The more detail, the better.

“M = Mother’s Ruin, a bar selling only different types of gin. Old gin advertising posters cover the walls and there are art displays using old gin bottles throughout. Including a display coming down from the ceiling involving lights and old-school gin bottles.

row of pubs and shops to play one of the easiest road trip games for couples

Of course, this game can easily be adapted to many topics – restaurants, sweet shops, magazine titles – or just drop the explanations and try to get the alphabet in as many animals/birds/names, as possible.

2. Would you rather

It’s an oldie, but a goldie, and just so flexible. It’s a great getting-to-know-you game too, the rules are simple: choose two or three scenarios and you have to choose the one you’d rather.

road trip would you rather game for couple

“Would you rather be able to fly or breathe underwater?” “Would you rather be a pop star or a famous traveller?” You know the sort of thing, can be as ridiculous as you like!

3. Name that tune

This one is guaranteed to annoy / thrill everyone around you if you’re on a bus or train. Maybe it should be saved for the inevitable wait at the airport over Christmas, when you can find yourself a quiet little corner. Think how much fun the people in this picture could be having right now if only they knew about this game…

name that tune roadtrip couple game

Right, the rules: hum / whistle / sing a tune and the other person / people have to guess it. You set the boundaries, but it could be, if they name it in five seconds they get 10 points, ten seconds, five points, 20 seconds 1 point. Or you could easily make it into a drinking game. If the opponent gets it right, the singer has to do a shot, if they get it wrong, they have to do a shot.

4. Never have I ever

You might be familiar with the naughty version of this a lot of teenagers like to play to see what their mates have been up to with their boyfriends and girlfriends. I’m not denying this is a fun game, but you can turn it around a bit to find out more about your travelling buddies beyond how many girls they’ve kissed. The rules: The game starts by saying something they’ve never done.

“Never have I ever not made it back to my own bed after a night out”

smiling couple in a car looking out of the window

Then everyone who has done that takes a swig of their drink/admits it. This makes for some great story times. Then the question moves on to the next person. It can be something really mundane, like “Never have I ever changed a baby’s nappy” and then everyone will probably be shocked. It’s also a good idea to have some travel shot glasses with you too (obviously for when you’ve pulled over for the night).

5. Yellow car

My brother used to punch me in the arm as hard as he could whenever he saw a yellow car – now I’m not condoning this violence, having spent 15 years at the end of it, but he did have the basis for a good game there. And I’m very glad we never went to New York.

Choose something such as a yellow car and every time you see it, the first person to scream yellow wins. You could add a few more in the mix, whenever you see an animal you have to get up and imitate the animal, or if you’re in an airport, whenever you see a baby, stand up and start crying demanding some milk. Or whenever you see someone in a ski jacket, get up and imitate a skier. Just be careful who you mock.

6. Truth or Dare

Be careful with this one!

While truth or dare has the potential to be one of the best road trip games for couples, it can also be one of the most dangerous. By dangerous I’m not only referring to crazy dares but also truths no one wants to hear while stuck in a car together.

For example, don’t go asking about past lovers or dirtiest habits etc…these things do not need to be discussed in enclosed environments.

Keep it fun!

7. License Plate Game

You can mix this up however you like, but the general principle of the license plate game is to find as many license plates from either different countries or years etc. But an alternative spin on this, which makes it a more fun road trip game for couples is to make it about you.

spotting license plates can be a fun road trip game for couples

So maybe trying to find cars with license plates that begin with certain letters to spell out your partner’s name or the city you met etc. Otherwise this game can get pretty dull fast if you play it the normal way.

8. Couple’s Trivia

This is one of the road trip games that can really put couples to the test, where you’ll be tested on how much you know about each other. Dig deep and try to remember all those conversations you’ve had over the years.

Or if you’re a fairly new couple, maybe it’s a good way to get to know more about each other?

happy couple laughing in a car

Couple’s Trivia works by having to guess the answer to questions about your partner, such as where were they born, how old were they when they learned to ride a bike etc. You could prepare question cards in advance and whoever gets the answer right scores a point.

If you don’t want to play trivia about each other, you could always opt for general trivia. From movies to music, and pop culture to… road trips, here are 50 trivia questions and answers already prepared for you.

9. 20 Questions

In the game of 20 Questions, one person has to think of someone famous and the other has to guess by asking up to 20 yes/no questions. The famous person can be real or fictional, dead or alive, male or female etc.

couple in a caravan playing a game and talking

If the person guessing gets the answer in 20 questions or less, they score a point and roles are reversed. It’s a simple game, but a great way to pass the time. It’s also one of the road trip games for couples that doesn’t require preparation in advance.

10. Kiss, Marry, Kill

Find out which celebrities your partner has a thing for or who they think is the lesser of three evils in this game. Kiss, Marry, Kill involves giving your partner three famous people and they have to choose which one they would rather kiss, marry or kill. It’s a simple couple’s game that’s great for road trips, as it’s often one of the funniest.

couple in back of a van on a road trip smiling and laughing

Some alternatives replace the word ‘kiss’ so you can choose whatever combination of words you want. Also, don’t always choose three beautiful celebrities, go for funnier options like three horrendous politicians or people you know your partner can’t stand.

Road trip games for couples

You might think some of the games sound a little silly now, but just you wait until you’re at a loss on a long journey with no access to charge your iPad / iPhone / Android, whatever. You’ll need something to occupy yourselves and fun road trip games for couples or friends are great for this.

Remember, it doesn’t matter what game you play as long as you’re sharing laughter and memories together! Just make sure you keep things light and don’t go too heavy on the personal questions (it’s supposed to be fun, not an interrogation).

I hope this list of games has given you some ideas for your next road trip with your significant other, or even a group of friends. Whether the goal is to keep everyone awake, find out who knows their stuff about their partner more, or rekindle romance, these fun road trip games for couples help make a long journey enjoyable.

Best road trip games to play with your partner and family

30 Best Road Trip Games That Are Super Fun

Road trip games can make any journey more enjoyable and fun whether you're going on a long drive across the country or spending a few hours in the car with the kids.

Our list of the 30 of the best road trip games will provide entertainment for children and adults alike, ranging from music-related games and foodie challenges to word contests and devious pranks.

You will never have to think of what to do on a long car ride again! The following is the ultimate list of games you can play on a road trip.

1. The Story Game

The Story Game can take up a good chunk of a road trip if everyone's memory holds up!

Entertaining for adults and kids alike, this is storytelling with a twist - you go round the car and each passenger adds just one word following on from the player before.

See how crazy you can make the story, and get someone to record it on their phone so you can listen back to the hilarious progression of the plot as you make way along your road trip. You could go from sunbathing in Spain to training alpacas in Chile in a matter of seconds.

Trust us, you're in for a laugh with this one and if your passengers are good, these stories can get seriously long!

2. I'm Going On A Road Trip

The I'm Going On A Road Trip game will definitely test your memory!

This road trip game requires a bit more brain power than some of the others, but is still really entertaining and great for all ages. To play, passengers take it in turns to state 'I'm going on a road trip and I'm bringing…' followed by an item of their choice.

The next person has to repeat the phrase, saying the last person's item and adding one of their own and so on - eventually you'll have a really long list of crazy items to try and remember, and it's always amusing watching people try and get it right a few rounds in.

Be sure to throw in a few weird and wonderful items to confuse the rest of the players!

3. The Quiet Game

The Quiet Game can be a great way to earn 5 minutes of silence on a road trip.

This game is a bit of a joke for the adults who want a few minutes of peace and quiet from their squabbling kids. The rules are hilariously simple - just say 'who can stay quiet the longest?' and breathe as the competitive siblings fall instantly silent.

Just a word of warning though: don't expect it to last very long, so have another kid-friendly car game lined up for when they get bored.

4. The Banana Game

A bright yellow classic Beetle is one of the cars you can find in the Banana road trip game.

This game is all about the color yellow and is super simple - points are awarded whenever a passenger spots a yellow vehicle.

Come up with a scoring system for different types of vehicle (e.g. one point for a car, two for a van, and three for a lorry) and whether you saw it parked (one point) or in motion (two points). Add any extra rules you fancy, and prepare to get competitive about who saw it first.

5. Never Miss A Beat

Never Miss A Beat is more of a group singalong than a game.

This game may be more of a singalong than a game, but it's still awesome!

Never miss a beat offers another chance to show off your singing skills and unusually gets everyone playing together rather than against each other.

All you need to do is stick on your family's favorite song or a song everyone knows the words to and start singing. Someone then needs to turn it down for 10 seconds whilst everyone keeps singing, before turning it back up again to see if you've kept the beat and stayed in time.

This game is mainly just a bit of fun, but you could always turn it into a competition by splitting into teams!

I Spy is an all time great road trip game and requires no preparation or props.

Another classic you've probably played a thousand times before but never get bored of.

Passengers take it in turns to find an object either inside or outside the car and say "I spy with my little eye something beginning with…" the first letter of whatever the object is.

The other passengers must then try and guess the answer (clues can be given if it's really hard), with the winner taking the next turn. This is an easy car game to play with kids and always a great one to keep bored passengers entertained for a surprisingly long time.

7. 20 Questions

The 20 Questions road trip game only allows Yes/No questions.

This classic road trip game probably doesn't need much of an introduction - simply choose one passenger to start by thinking of a random object, and the other passengers take turns asking 20 yes-or-no questions to guess the object.

Whoever finds the answer first gets to think of the random thing in the next round, but if the object has everyone stumped, they get to keep their role for the next round.

There are no rules on the object you can pick, but lying in your answers is strictly forbidden!

8. Car Bingo

Spotting wildlife can be a fun game on the road - like this elk in the Yellowstone National Park.

This kid-friendly game takes a little prep before you set off, but it's well worth it if you need to keep the kids entertained on a long journey.

Make a list of things the children might see along the road trip route - e.g. cows, a tractor, a red car etc, to give to them when you get into the car.

As you drive they can cross things off as they see them, not only distracting them from boredom but also encouraging them to look around and learn about the places they're visiting.

Make the list as specific to the place you're going as you want. In Texas you might have anything mentioning the Lone Star and in Wyoming you might be on the lookout for elk!

You can tailor the difficulty and number of things to find depending on the age of your children.

9. Sweet Or Sour

The Sweet Or Sour road trip game is all about waving at other people.

The rules of this road trip game are super simple: passengers take turns waving at passing pedestrians or people in nearby cars. If they wave back they're sweet, if not they're sour. You win a point for every sweet passerby you get, so aim to find as many friendly people as possible along the way.

For obvious reasons, the driver should opt out of this one, but it can be extra fun if they divert the car through a busy area of town to rack up some extra waving opportunities!

Remember not to distract other drivers!

10. Secret Place Race

Kids looking at a map to find secret places along the road trip route.

Make use of that old road map that sits in the car seat pocket to entertain the kids. All you need to do for the secret place race is pick a place they're unlikely to know such as a tiny village, river, or mountain, and see how long it takes them to find it on the map.

This can be incredibly entertaining in a Where's Waldo kind of way, except their mission in finding the village can be made critically important for the driver to be able to find the right way!

Have a reward on hand if they're able to find it in less than 5 minutes, and watch as they're completely engrossed in the task. A simple yet satisfyingly effective game.

11. Punch Buggy

Spotting a VW Beetle or another car of your choice is a great reason to playfully punch each other on a road trip.

First gaining popularity as part of one of Volkswagen's marketing campaigns in the 1960s, the aim of this game is to give your fellow passengers a playful punch whenever you see a VW Beetle drive past.

This is one of those road trip games that is universally loved by children (as long as you monitor the punching to avoid disaster), although we don't see why the adults wouldn't enjoy it too.

Granted - in some parts of the world, seeing a Beetle is incredibly rare, so if you're struggling to see many Beetles, you could always choose a specific color of car or another funny model as the target instead to make it a touch easier.

12. Regional Car Pantry

Buying a selection of different foods and snacks along the length of your road trip can become a game itself.

One for the foodies. Stretching across the full duration of your road trip, collect as many local snacks as you can at every stop along the way to build up your car pantry.

Make sure you take pictures of each snack (or buy duplicates if they'll keep) so you can see what you've managed to collect at the end of the trip, and be sure to take some weird and wonderful treats home for friends and family to try.

Do some research beforehand and make a list of all the foods you want to find, or just wing it and see what local delicacies you stumble across as you go.

13. The License Plate Game

A selection of US license plates that would be perfect for the License Plate game.

You'll need pens and paper for this game so make sure you've packed some before you head off. The aim is to spot license plates from as many different countries or US states (depending on where your road trip is taking place) as possible.

Write a list of the places you've seen and compare it with the other passengers at the end of the drive. This is the ideal game for those long stretches of boring motorway where you'll probably rack up a surprisingly long list, and the person with the most countries gets to ride shotgun for the next leg of the journey.

The end of this road trip game can get very controversial - if you spot a real game winner, photographic evidence is a good idea so get your phone out and take photos in secret!

14. The Fortunately - Unfortunately road trip game

The Fortunately Unfortunately road trip game can be played absolutely anywhere based on what you see along the way.

This is similar to the Story Game (see #1 above), however players get a little more control and creativity. You can say more than one word this time!

One player starts off with a 'fortunately' sentence, and the next has to follow with an 'unfortunately' sentence to build a story of luck and misfortune. For example, one player might start with 'fortunately, the sun was shining' with the second player adding 'unfortunately they had a long drive ahead of them' and so on.

This game can make it a little easier to remember the long string as everything has to be either fortunate or unfortunate! Get as creative as you can and you'll find yourself at your destination in what seems like no time at all.

15. The Complete Food Menu Game

The Complete Food Menu game involves ticking off restaurant types as you pass them on your road trip.

This is the perfect road trip game to play if you're passing through a few towns on your way although roadside restaurants and chains will do just fine.

Print out a sheet with all the food types you can think of in a grid against the names of people in the car.

Every time you drive past a restaurant of some kind, the first person to spot it gets to collect the tick for the food type it serves. Steaks and pizzas should be easy to collect by everyone, but you might just win if you're the only one who spotted the seafood restaurant in the middle of Oklahoma!

16. The Name Game

The more random names you know, the better you will do in the Name game on your road trip.

This is another simple game that keeps your brain occupied during a long drive without being too strenuous. One person simply says any name they can think of and the next person must say another name that begins with the last letter of the name before, and so on.

For example if passenger one says Tom, passenger two might say Mary. If you've made any friends during your road trip, try and include their names to make it a tad more topical.

Obviously adding the rule of not repeating the same names once they have been mentioned makes this a whole lot more interesting as the game progresses although you're guaranteed to have a disagreement over whether a name has or has not been mentioned already!

17. Guess The Song

Guess The Song is not only reserved for road trips, but an awesome way to have fun on the way.

If you're comfortable in your musical knowledge you'll definitely want to suggest playing this one. The rules are simple: get the front passenger to play the first few seconds of a song and whoever can guess the artist and song title the quickest wins a point.

This is much easier if you can connect your phone to the car for the road trip and play songs from there so you can easily search and pause the music.

The person with the most points after half an hour gets control of the music for the rest of the journey, so there's a lot at stake...

18. Sing The Next Line

Two women enjoying playing Sing The Next Line game in their car.

A variation on the Guess The Song game above, except this game relies on your vocal chords.

Instead of just guessing the song after a few seconds, players have to rack their brains and try and sing the next line, and the person who successfully remembers it first wins a point. Think of a reward for whoever wins, and if you attempt it but get it wrong you have to do a forfeit chosen by the driver.

19. Radio Roulette

Be prepared to listen to some seriously wacky tunes in the Radio Roulette game.

This game's a little less hands-on but no less entertaining. Use your road trip driving time to discover all the local radio stations of the place you're visiting by re-tuning every ten minutes and choosing a new station at random.

You'll probably find some pretty wacky programs and get to know traditional and popular music in that country - a great way to appreciate culture even when you're between destinations.

If you a radio station that is really wacky, let us know!

20. Would You Rather

Would You Rather is a game that can be as innocent or outrageous as you are comfortable with.

This road trip game can be be as PG or as outrageous as you like depending on the age of the passengers.

Take turns asking the car whether they would rather do one thing or another (e.g. 'would you rather go to France or Spain?') and see what they answer. Make it as difficult as possible to choose between the two options for maximum entertainment value, whether that's making them equally amazing or equally horrible, it's up to you…

You can see how this game can get as interesting in group of adults as with kids - answering the question is compulsory and providing reasons is where it gets fun!

21. Car Rules Road Trip Game

The Car Rules road trip game will keep you thinking in case you go over a bridge or pass a yellow car on the way.

Everyone in the car gets to make up a silly rule, e.g. whenever we cross a bridge everyone has has to touch their nose, or whenever we stop at a red light everyone has to touch the roof of the car.

The last person to join in when an action is enforced gains a point, and the person with the most points at the end of the drive loses. Get as creative as you like with the rules and try and catch people out where possible so you can take the victory.

The loser has to go pay for parking or buy ice creams at the next stop!

22. Hot Seat

The Hot Seat game can get you to know your close friends even better and have a laugh.

If you're that nosy friend that wants to find out all of your companions' deepest secrets then you'll like this one. Passengers take it in turns to be in the hot seat and are asked 5 questions, one of which they're allowed to veto and the other four must be answered honestly.

This is best played in an adult-only car (questions get notoriously cheeky) and is the ideal way to pass the time finding out some interesting new facts about your road trip friends.

You can use it as a warm up or a step up from the car version of Truth or Dare (see #27 below) depending on how close your friendships are!

23. People Watching

People watching is fun - some cars will really make you scratch your heads as you pass them on your road trip.

Someone picks a car full of people that everyone can see (this works best if you're stuck in traffic), and together you make up a story about the people - who they are, where they're going, what they do for a living. The funnier and more far-fetched the story, the better - just make sure you're not staring too obviously at your subjects or it might get a little awkward...

Use your imagination to make the stories controversial and see how far you can go with making things up!

You might just surprise yourself how the most innocuous of road trip games will make you spot things you would never otherwise see just by looking at the cars around you.

24. Kiss, Marry, Avoid

The Kiss, Marry, Avoid road trip game will let you debate the qualities of famous people or mutual friends.

Another one for the older crowd. Take turns listing three famous people and the other passengers in the car have to choose which person they would kiss, which they would marry, and which they would avoid.

Make it really hard to decide so that everyone has a bit of a laugh, and try to predict each other's answers to add an extra twist to the game.

If you want to add a little spice to the game, use people you all know or move to people in the car!

25. While You Were Sleeping

While You Were Sleeping is a road trip game where your imagination can run wild!

There's nothing more tempting than pulling a prank on a passenger who falls asleep en route, and whilst we don't dispute the whole drawing-a-mustache classic, we've got something even craftier.

Whilst they're taking a nap on the road trip, have a brainstorm with the awake members of the party and come up with an epic story or scenario of something that they missed during their nap.

The aim of the game is to get them to believe the story, so make sure nobody laughs or breaks character (come up with a forfeit if they do), and keep the lie going for as long as possible. If you manage to pull it off this is far better than a DIY mustache... but by all means, draw one on for good measure.

This classic road trip game can really take a turn for the worse if you want it to. A simple horror story about a truck that followed the car for miles that you just managed to pull away from before getting a flat tyre can go a long way as you're parked on the side of the road. Peer into the rear view mirror in horror and watch their face when a random truck appears on the horizon!

26. Categories

Beatles songs is one possible option for the Categories road trip game.

Popular with kids and adults alike the world over, Categories can be an awesome game to play on road trips as well.

The premise is simple - somebody picks a category which can have multiple different answers. Fruit or Beatles' songs can both be great options.

Players have to then take turns to name one item from the category at a time. Players are eliminated when they can't name one until there's one winner. Either the winner or the next person in turn gets to choose the next category.

That brings our list of the best road trip games to an end. Do you have other games you enjoy? Get in touch to let us know and we'll add it to our list!

27. Truth Or Dare (The Car Edition)

Playing Truth Or Dare on a long road trip can really help pass the time and get people laughing.

The old classic can and should be played on road trips! Players take turns to either answer an embarassing question truthfully or perform a dare set by other players.

The dares obviously have to be contained to the realms of the car or the roadside so you'll have to get creative.

Needless to say, this game is very different when played with kids as a family or with adult friends and is equally great in both cases!

28. 6 Degrees of Separation

How is a gaucho from Patagonia connected to Prince Charles? That's what the 6 Degrees of Separation game is all about.

This is a road trip game that will require some imagination and provide plenty of topics for conversation.

Take turns and pick two people who you may know or make them up (e.g. a Shaolin monk). The more different the background and location of these people the better!

Then proceed to discuss how these two people are connected through 6 connections or less. You don't have to know the whole chain - that's actually where the fun is.

How is a gaucho from a remote farm in southern Argentina connected to Prince Charles? The gaucho must know his ranch's boss (1). The boss knows the boss of the company that buys beef from local producers (2). That company has a liaison manager in a UK-based Argentinian beef importing firm (3). This manager has a colleague who imports fine wines from around the world for the same company (4). The colleague personally provides the fine wines to the Royal sommelier (5) and the sommelier personally knows Prince Charles (6). Bingo!

29. The Stop Joker Card road trip game

The Stop Joker Card game allows every person the road trip to pick a stop wherever they want.

If you're going on a long trip and you're going to be driving all day or even longer than that, this is a great way to give everyone in the car, kids included, a way to have a bit of control.

At any point during the trip, each person can enact their Stop Joker Card - this means the car has to stop wherever they are passing and spend some time there doing an activity or just relaxing.

Your kids might see something really fun halfway along and use their card to break up the journey and everyone gets to have their stop along the route!

30. Pick One Car road trip game

You have to be quick if you spot a dream car on your road trip to win the One Car game.

This one is a game of patience and opportunity. Every person in the car has one chance during the journey to pick a car that you can see on your way as their ultimate One Car. The objective is to pick the coolest/fastest/most amazing car possible.

Once you've chosen a car, you can't change it - you only have one go so you better make it count - if you're passing something that is decent but not stellar, you might have to make a tough choice.

The game is made even more difficult by the fact that the first person to call the car out gets to have it so you have to be alert and on the lookout if you haven't got one yet.

The Ten Best Games To Play On A Road Trip

We all dream of perfect empty, winding roads, but the reality of driving is clogged, endless highways. Here's how to make them tolerable with nothing that you don't already have in your car.

10.) dance or die.

Okay, so this is a game that you should not play, ever. It could get you and everyone riding with you killed dead. Amazingly, reader Jonee (who is known for driving dangerous cars ) lived to tell the rules of the game.

At random times during the drive, the driver shouts "dance or die!" and takes his hands off the wheel and cannot put them back on until everyone in the car is dancing in their seat. It's especially thrilling when you do it when some or all of the passengers are asleep. I'm proud to say I co-invented this one and am still alive.

Suggested By: Jonee , Photo Credit: Edwin and Kelly Tofslie (no one was injured in the pictured flip)

9.) Beat the GPS

Speeding is illegal and can get you in serious trouble with the law. But SuperFluke knows that everyone who's ever even looked at their GPS has played this.

Google Maps - "6 hours 32 minutes to destination." Me- "We'll be there in 4 hours."

8.) Soft Drink Challenge

Everyone has played the game of 'who has to pee first,' but McLarry has a superior variation.

Buy a big pack of your preferred soft drink. You and your opponent(s) have to match each other can for can. First one to cave for a bathroom break loses. I won, but I don't think I'll ever play again... Also, neither of us was driving.

Suggested By: McLarry , Photo Credit: Gabriel Saldana

7.) Padiddle

This one is best played when you're driving your grandparents to the senior center. The rules are simple: whenever you spot a car with a headlight out, you shout 'Padiddle.' Everyone then has to shout it, too. The last one to shout it has to remove an item of clothing. RacerFree explains why it's approved by lecherous fathers everywhere.

And there's so many ways to play and variations.... My dad and I would play for points; once I had my own car in high school and beyond I'd get girls to lose an article of clothing for each time I called Padiddle first.... Needless to say, with years of practice with the points version, I had many a naked chick in my car by the end of a ride.... Thanks Dad, looking back I think you knew what you were helping me train for; you rule!

6.) The Anal Game

There are lots of variations to this one, but maximum_sarge might have found the best.

The Anal RV game. Adding the word 'anal' before the name of every RV you pass. Now that you know, you will do it for life... You're welcome.

Suggested By: maximum_sarge , Photo Credit: dave_7

5.) Seat Heater

This might be the most malicious game on the list, as Fish explains.

When the whole family went on road trips, my brother and I would try to turn on each other's seat heater when we weren't looking. Sounds stupidly simple, but you'd end up with toasted buns if you failed to keep a look out. This game could last us for hours when getting out of the massive expanse of land that is Texas.

4.) Carspotting

This might be the simplest game on this list — you try and identify every car on the road with you. The trick is to be the first person to ID a car from the farthest away. Very useful when you can make out the front lights of a Crown Vic at a half a mile.

3.) Contact

From the simplest to the most complicated. It's a tough one to learn, but great once you have it down. Here's Streetlight 's primer.

The game is called CONTACT (could be PG, more fun if R-rated): 1. One person (the host) thinks of a word (it should be fairly long - like "boomerang") 2. The host gives out the first letter (in this case "B") 3. Everyone else in the car tries to think of a word that starts with B 4. Someone will then say: "Is it the part of the human body that I love the most?" 5. The host can now rebut: "No, it is not the Back" - thus negating this question, and everyone goes to step 3 6. If the host cannot right away guess the body part that starts with B, but one other person in the car can - that person will say "Contact!" and the original asker and this person will simultaneously and count to 10 (seconds) and then yell out the word they are thinking. 7. If they both yelled "Back" - they had successful contact, and the host now has to open the next letter (like "O"), and the game continues, but all the words now have to start with "BO" (like book, boat, Bohemia, etc.) 8. If, however, they both yell back different things - they did not, in fact, have contact, everyone moves to step 3 and hilarity ensues as one of your friends yells "BOOBS", while the other is going "BALLS" 9. The game ends when the word is guessed (either by uncovering all the letters or actually thinking of the word that was originally thought of - like if "boom" is uncovered and someone says "Isn't it that Australian hunting weapon" - the host has to reveal that it is boomerang) The point is to come up with a set of clues that everyone (or at least one other person) in the car would understand, but the host would not. Bonus points are awarded for creating a possibility for a double-entendre.

2.) The Alphabet Game

Everyone knows how to play — you go up and down the alphabet picking letters out of words you see from the car. Some people play where you can use license plate letters, which is total bullcrap.

The double alphabet game is a great variation. Only words that have at least two instances of one letter can count. 'Alligator' - A, 'Blueberry' - B, and so on. No one in recorded history has ever finished a round of the double alphabet game.

Suggested By: ncasolowork2 , Photo Credit: Mike Knell

1.) Slug Bug

Still the best, because it gives you an excuse to punch your siblings. Some people play where New Bugs count for one and Old Bugs count for two. That's okay. Some people call this game Punch Buggy, and that's not okay. It's called slug bug, yo. (It's called Punch Buggy, but Raph won't listen to reason. - Ed.)

This is probably one of everyone’s favorite classic games. It is actually a getting-to-know-you game and is all about knowing your family and friends’ experiences in life. Playing this game on the road would surely be a perfect bonding for everyone.

How to Play Never Have I Ever

Someone starts the game by saying “Never have I ever… (followed by something he/she has never done before)” and then everyone who has done it must do a consequence agreed to by everyone. For example, if you’re on a road trip then that person should be the driver for the next hour or something like that.

The game goes on as agreed and the next person gives his or her statement. It can go on and on until players want it to or in this case, until you reach your destination! This classic party game has definitely created a lot of fun memories and friends that are closer than ever!

This song is so soothing that one of the commenters writes, “This song is incredibly uplifting that he feels like his body is going to burst in the sunlight.” It could be said that the artists created a masterpiece enough to make you feel like you are in a beautiful garden full of butterflies and a slow breeze is blowing.</p>

5. The Singing Game

Are your friends and family fond of singing? The Singing Game is all about connecting different songs through their lyrics. It starts with a player singing a line of a song and the next will sing a line from a different song. The basic rule is that the lines should somehow connect. The player who fails to give a line loses.

<p>Making pit stops for food and drink is a surefire way to keep your kids onside. However, the right option could keep your children occupied for longer, and someone on Reddit believes a milkshake is perfect.</p><p>The Redditor said, “Milkshakes take a while to drink so they keep them occupied for a bit.” Furthermore, she believes the best time to stop for a milkshake is when there’s an hour of driving left. </p><p>We don’t know about you but stopping for a milkshake sounds pretty great. However, one user was concerned about the potential mess and car sickness.</p>

6. Trivia Game

It features a large door, Baltic Birch walls, and a double bed. That’s way cozier than a tent and cheaper than a hotel. </p><p>The Tuco is also equipped with a solar panel and LED lighting, so you can go on short off-grid adventures. </p>

7. Movie Game

The Movie Game is similar to the Singing Game, but instead of connecting song lines, you’ll connect movies through the actors in them . The game starts by naming a specific actor. All the players will give a movie title in which the actor starred. The players who give an incorrect answer will be out, and the remaining player wins.

<p>If you want to keep your kids occupied without stopping and spending money, follow Reddit’s advice and make every journey more interesting by adding an element of mystery. </p><p>One Redditor commented, “I told my kids during our cross-Canada bus rides when they were little that we would be traveling through some pretty wild country, they might like to keep an eye out for wild Pokémon.”</p><p>Another reader does something similar but tells their children to look out for Big Foot. </p>

8. Alphabet Game

In the Alphabet Game, players need to look at license plates and point at letters alphabetically. The first person to complete the alphabet wins. Players can choose between the right side or left side of the road.

<p>The Fortunately & Unfortunately game is a funny mix of truth and lies. It starts with one player saying something good that happened and starting with “Fortunately.” The next player has to say something unfortunate connected to what was previously said. Anyone who stumbles and stutters is out. </p>

9. Fortunately & Unfortunately

The Fortunately & Unfortunately game is a funny mix of truth and lies. It starts with one player saying something good that happened and starting with “Fortunately.” The next player has to say something unfortunate connected to what was previously said. Anyone who stumbles and stutters is out.

<p>An even better solution to the “my bed is filled with dog hair” issue is to give your pup its own dedicated bed in your RV. The right place to set up your dog bed depends on your RV’s floor plan.</p><p>Some ideas include at the foot of your “human” bed, under the dinette, or in the transition from the cab to the living area if you have a motorhome. </p><p>For cold-weather camping, there are also heated dog beds that plug into an AC outlet to keep your dog warm on cold winter nights. </p>

10. Animal Name Game

The Animal Name Game is a connecting game. The first player names any animal of his choosing. The next player gets the last letter of the mentioned animal to name a new one. The chain of the naming game continues. The player who can’t name one sits out until only one player is left as a winner.

<p>In the Telephone Game, the first player is assigned as the storyteller. The storyteller whispers the story to the next player, and that player has to whisper it to the next player. All players will try to tell the story word-for-word, with the last one finally saying it out loud. You’ll get a good laugh at how different the story becomes at the end of each round. </p>

11. Telephone Game

In the Telephone Game, the first player is assigned as the storyteller. The storyteller whispers the story to the next player, and that player has to whisper it to the next player. <p>Bringing smelly food on board to eat, like fast food or a tuna sandwich, is rude to your neighbor’s sense of smell. Stick with dry snacks and plane food.</p>

12. Regional Food Master

Are you all foodies in your family or friends? In the game Regional Food Master, you find a local snack at every stop you make at gas stations. The snacks need to be locally made, and you need to collect one for each city you visit.

The downside of this game is that you need to spend money on it. The big advantage is you get to eat something new .

<p>Freeway is a rock song released on June 7, 2006, by Kurt Vile. The song provokes your soul for a road trip as the lyrics explore themes of freedom and escapism. Song listeners stated that the song is divided into two halves. The opening part of the track is classic rock, while the second part reflects the power of imagination and mental escape.</p>

13. Name That Song

The Name That Song game starts with one player singing a line from a song . All the other players will guess which song it belongs to. You can make the game interesting by starting with just saying the line and then humming in the next round when no one guesses it. Naming the title and the singer gets double points!

<p>A popular Reddit response was to “never accept anything someone randomly hands you. Ever.” This is a common scam seen across Latin America and it could lead to an uncomfortable experience.</p><p>So, what’s the scam? People hand you something and tell you it’s a gift or freebie. However, once you take it, they’ll chase you down demanding payment (often more than the item is worth). </p><p>It’s a scam we’ve seen before and definitely one you want to avoid!</p>

14. Would You Rather

In the game Would You Rather, everyone will get the chance to ask questions with only two given choices. Their answers might surprise you. Some interesting questions include the following:

These games are a great way to keep everyone off of social media, allowing them to just live life with the people they love! None of these games can be played alone, so make sure that you have space for all of your friends in the car.

1. ROAD TRIP TRIVIA

road trip drinking games

Road trip trivia is the perfect game for those individuals who like to learn things about the places that they have been and the places that they are going. Road trips are never boring when you are competing to prove who has the most random assortment of knowledge.

HOW TO PLAY

The game comes in a metal tin to contain the mess when you’re not playing. Simply choose a card, read aloud the question, and take turns answering. You may choose to play with random locations, or you can use the locations that you are near.

2. SHOTGUN

WHAT DO YOU MEME? Shotgun! - The Hilarious Family...

  • Hit The Road: This card game is perfect for your next long drive!
  • Family Fun: This family game is designed for ages 12+ and is encouraged to be...
  • How to Play: Nominate someone to be the card reader (person sitting shotgun,...

Shotgun is the perfect game for any age group. This game can easily keep younger players occupied, while older players will be just as entertained.

The player riding Shotgun is the designated card reader for the first game.

You can play a DIY version of the game by making your own cards before the road trip. Alternatively, the game has over two hundred question cards that allow players to complete a variety of actions to earn points. Of course, the player with the most points wins the game when the road trip ends!

3. NAME THE ARTIST

road trip drinking games

Name the Artist is a game that is perfect for the musically inclined family. It keeps the road trip interesting by giving everyone a chance to play their favorite type of music and possibly even discover some new music.

When a song comes on the radio, you must yell the artist of the song before any other player.  If you’re the first player to do this, you score a point.

If the game gets boring, you can spice it up by choosing a player to play random music from their phone. Additionally, to make things more difficult, you could only allow a few seconds of the song to play before you announce your answers. Either way, you get to listen to sick jams while also enjoying wholesome family time.

4. WOULD YOU RATHER ROAD TRIP

road trip drinking games

Would You Rather is a classic game that can be played in any party or group setting. It also happens to be one of the best road trip games for those who want to learn a little more about the people that they are traveling with!  You will bond with the players who play Would You Rather for the rest of your life.

Present the players with a “would you rather” option, and they must choose one of the two options. Fair warning : this game can get gross and out of hand quickly because anything in the world is an option. As the game progresses, the players will come up with ridiculous choices that the others must choose between.

If you aren’t able to come up with questions on the fly, you can purchase a deck of Would You Rather cards, and then you can draw randomly from the deck. You will quickly get into the heads of your car-mates, so be prepared!

5. THE LICENSE PLATE GAME

road trip drinking games

The License Plate Game is a fun game that can be played as a background game on a road trip. This means you don’t have to be exclusively playing this game, as it can be played throughout the entire road trip.

The goal is to spot as many license plates from as many states as possible! They have to be confirmed by other players before they are allowed to count them! This saves the group from having to worry about cheating.

This game is great for kids and adults alike as you travel through many cities and states. To make keeping score easier, you can print a map of the United States before heading out on your road trip and use crayons to color in the map when you see a state’s license plate.

Once a plate is called, it cannot be called again, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. The players will quickly become excited as they realize that many of the plates from the same state do not look the same!

6. I SPY

road trip drinking games

I Spy is a classic game that many families love to play. It can also become an awesome road trip game, keeping everyone engaged and interested in their surroundings. This game can be as complicated or simple as you make it, making it perfect for any age group.

First, you must say, “I Spy,” and then give a random quality of the object that you have chosen. The other player must be able to see the object so it cannot be something hidden. Everyone will then begin to guess what you have spied. The other players get three tries before you receive a point. If the players spot the object, then they earn a point instead!

7. THE GROCERY GAME

road trip drinking games

The Grocery Game will have everyone in the car giggling by the end. This game is similar to I Spy, but it easily takes the place of I Spy when you are experiencing the boring stretch of a road trip, like the desert. This game uses imagination rather than actual objects in the surrounding space.

To play, first think of something you have seen in a grocery store. Remember, grocery stores have lots of things, even toys! The other players must then ask questions regarding the object. Questions could be about its shape, its color, or its purpose. The questions must be yes or no questions.

The questions will have players laughing, and so will the random things that pop into people’s heads!

8. ALPHABET GAME

road trip drinking games

The Alphabet Game is a perfect game to practice alphabetical skills with younger kids, and it is more of a challenge than one would think!

The goal of the game is to find signs that begin with each letter of the alphabet. The catch? It must happen in alphabetical order. If you think you will have trouble keeping up with everyone’s place, then you can print a sheet online or even do it yourself! This allows players to mark off each letter as they find a sign beginning with that letter and write down what the sign was beside it.

The best time to find new signs is when you are stopping to eat or when you pass food places. Everybody else may be caught up in city limit signs, but food places are where it’s at!

9. IN MY SUITCASE

road trip drinking games

In My Suitcase is another fun alphabetical game. While it is a perfect road trip game for younger kids, the entire family will have a laugh playing In My Suitcase.

To play, each player will attempt to finish the following statement: “I’m going on vacation, and in my suitcase, I have….”.

You first state an item that begins with the letter A. The next player will make the statement, mentioning an item that begins with the letter B. See how long your group can go! When someone gets stuck, and they do not have a word that matches the letter that they are on, then the round ends.

If you don’t have many exciting things packed in your suitcases besides what you wear, everyone can spice it up by stating items that aren’t actually in their bag. This will quickly lead to gut-wrenching laughs.

10. SING ALONG CHALLENGE

road trip drinking games

The Sing Along Challenge is another game that is directed at musically inclined families. It’s a super fun game to play with classic and well-known music, but even funnier with more obscure choices!

First, choose a song and play a portion of it aloud. Whenever you want, you can pause, and any player that you choose will then begin to sing from the same place in the song.

If the player you choose is able to sing the next line, they win a point. If they aren’t, then you win a point. Every player has to be chosen before a player can be chosen again. This helps to avoid singling anyone out!

11. ROAD TRIP BINGO

ROAD TRIP BINGO

This is another road trip classic that can be played with everyone except the driver, of course. If you’re driving, just have someone else cross off things you list.

This is a pretty obvious one: you can download a sheet off the internet or create your own. Make a bingo sheet of different things you might see along the road, for example, different gas stations, fast food places, and even famous sights. The possibilities are endless, and this game can be played throughout the trip, too!

12. GUESS THE TIME

GUESS THE TIME

Guess The Time is a fun way to get people looking forward to certain destinations that could otherwise be boring. The good thing about this game is that it can be prepared before the road trip, and all you have to do is keep track of the points.

To play this game, simply make a list of the cities you’ll be passing through during your road trip. Then, have everyone guess at what exact time you’ll be passing through each destination. For example , what time will the car pass the sign saying “You are now leaving Ohio”?

The person with the closest time (down to the minute) wins the round.

13. WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING

This is one of our favorite games to play during road trips. It’s especially fun if you have someone in your car who loves to nap.

Once someone falls asleep during your trip, then the game begins. The rest of the people in the car will make up a fake story that supposedly happened while the other person was asleep.

You can wake the player after a while or just wait until they wake up themselves. Then, you start to tell the made-up story. Each player then has to add their own part to the story. Whoever breaks character or is caught by the sleeper loses a point. If you all successfully convince the sleeper, then you each get a point.

As this is not really a game, you can do it too many times on the trip, and you can up the stakes by saying whoever loses has to do the dishes.

14. THE PRICE IS RIGHT

PRICE IS RIGHT

The beauty of this game is that gas prices are constantly changing from state to state and even from gas stations within each state.

To play, everyone must try to guess the price of regular unleaded gas at the next gas station whoever guesses the price correctly to the nearest tenth wins. It is especially fun for players who don’t drive since they rarely pay attention to gas prices.

You can have the player who is furthest away buy a snack for everyone inside the gas station!

15. SPIN A STORY FROM THE PAST

SPIN A STORY

This is a great game for the players in the car who are good at making up stories. It is essentially “who can lie better.”

You begin by telling a story about your past, and another player has to say whether you are telling the truth or spinning a story. Each player gets two follow-up questions, and then they have to guess. A good strategy is to tell a real story but then add something that didn’t happen. This makes it easier to follow the “lie.”

If they guess correctly, they get two points, and the first player to reach 10 points wins. The loser has to tell an embarrassing story that actually happened.

16. RIFF OFF

RIFF OFF

Riff Off is similar to The License Plate Game but with a fun twist. You can think of it almost like Scrabble with license plates!

To play this game, you have to find a license plate whose letters could make up a word. For example , if the license plate is PKN48, you could yell, “Pumpkin!” Another player can challenge you by creating a longer word with the same letters.

If you want to make the game a bit more difficult, you can say that the letters have to be in the correct order to make up the word, not scrambled. If someone spots a vanity plate, they get an extra two points. The first player to 10  points wins.

17. CHANGE ONE LETTER

CHANGE ONE LETTER

It seems like movie references are a big part of road trip games. This game is super fun to play, especially for those extra creative people. This game doesn’t have an exact title, but Change One Letter seems to work the best.

To play this game, choose a film, TV show, video game, or book, preferably something well-known. Then, change one letter of the title and describe the plot of the newly created title. Everyone else has to guess what the title is.

You can add or remove a letter as long as the title is made up of real words. For example , you might change Fight Club to Flight Club . Then, make up a plot about men who secretly take flights around the world together and then have to become pilots and fly the planes filled with their secret friends as passengers.

18. 20 QUESTIONS

20 QUESTIONS

20 Questions is a classic road trip game that can be played almost anywhere. The best part is that the object chosen is only limited by your imagination.

Similar to the grocery game, except there is a limit of only 20 questions. Pick an object, person, or place and allow the other players to guess what it is.

They may only ask yes or no questions, and they only get a total of 20 questions and only 3 guesses total. If they don’t guess in 20 questions, then you win. If someone guesses, they win, and they get to pick the next object.

19. DID YOU HEAR THAT…

DID YOU HEAR

Did you Hear That is a great game to play, especially if you keep up to date with pop culture and news. If you don’t, then you may have some trouble unless you are a good lie detector!

In this game, you are trying to fool your opponent and make them believe your story is true. You start by asking, “Did you hear that (blank) happened?” Your opponent will then either say, “That didn’t happen,” or “Tell me more.”

If they guess correctly that something didn’t happen, then they get two points. If they guess incorrectly that something didn’t happen, then you steal one of their points and gain two of your own!

However, if they say, “Tell me more,” you continue with the story and the points are doubled at the end of your statement!

20. THE SINGING GAME

SINGING GAME

Let’s get another game for the singers in the group. This is especially fun when everyone joins in and sings along to each song.

This game is played in a chain. So you start singing any song you want. The next person now has to sing another song that begins with any lyric from your song. This continues until someone messes up or they get stuck.

Here’s a good example :

  • “Don’t go breaking my heart…”
  • “…will go on and…”
  • “…Find, that what you’re looking for has been here the whole time…”

21. THE MOVIE GAME

MOVIE GAME

This game is like a word association game but with movies and actors. It will go very well for film buffs, but for everyone else, well, good luck.

The rules of this game are quite simple. First, start with any actor you can think of and say their name aloud. The next player then has to name a movie that that actor was in. Then the next person says another actor who starred in that same film. This continues until someone is incorrect. They then sit out the next round.

An example would be:

  • Jennifer Lawrence
  • The Silver Linings Playbook
  • Robert DeNiro
  • The Godfather

22. EXPLAIN A MOVIE PLOT BADLY

MOVIE PLOT BADLY

As I mentioned before, movies come up a lot during road trips. We love that, but how often do we get to describe movies badly?

In this game, you simply pick any film; again, known films are usually better for this one. Now, describe the plot of the film in a terrible way, but that is also factual. The others have to guess the film. If they guess correctly, they get a point; if not, then you get a point.

Here’s our favorite example, “Two 90yr old men fight when one of them can’t remember who the other is.” ( Captain America: The Winter Soldier )

23. ESSENTIALLY THE SAME MOVIE

ESSENTIALLY THE SAME

Yes, believe it or not, it’s another movie-based game. It’s just so much fun to incorporate films into road trip games. This game is so fun, but it also makes you see how similar a lot of movies are!

The game starts with you naming any film you want. The next person then has to name another movie that has the same basic plot. Some examples are Volcano and Dante’s Peak , or No Strings Attached , and Friends with Benefits.

The play continues until someone gets stumped. The last person to be able to name a film that fits is the winner.

24. FORTUNATELY, UNFORTUNATELY

FORTUNATELY UNFORTUNATELY

Fortunately, Unfortunately, is a fun game to play, especially for those who are good at improv. The best part is that it takes no preparation at all and can help kids with their creativity!

The game is really easy to play. All you do is make a declarative statement that begins with “Fortunately.” For example, “Fortunately, we are passing through Las Vegas soon.” Then, the next person follows that up with an “Unfortunately” statement. For example, “Unfortunately, It’s now underwater!” Then that continues until someone can’t think of anything or until you get bored.

25. REGIONAL FOOD MASTER

REGIONAL FOOD

You know I couldn’t leave out games for the foodies out there. This game is much easier if you’re playing with adults, but if the kids are playing, you’ll just have to cover the bill.

The object of the game is to collect the most regional snacks between the start and the end of your road trip. There are a few rules to make it a bit more interesting.

  • You have to get a snack at each gas station you stop at.
  • You can only choose one item per gas station.
  • The food item has to be created in the region where the stop was.
  • Duplicate cities do not count.

The person who has the most snacks at the end of the trip is the winner!

26. THE COUNTING GAME

COUNTING GAME

The counting game is one that can be played anytime, anywhere. It can even be played as a drinking game, but obviously not during the road trip. There is no limit to the number of players. However, the more players there are, the more chance there is to mess up.

Start the game by saying the number one out loud. Then, another person follows with the next number at random. This continues until you reach the number 20. The rules are: if two people say the same number at the same time, then you start over. If there is more than a five-second pause, start over. Trust me, this is harder than you might think.

27. FAMOUS NAME GAME

FAMOUS NAME

This is another association-style game. If you know the names of lots of famous people, then you’ll love this game.

You’re trying to connect the first and last names of famous people. Start by saying any name out loud. Then, the next person has to say another name of a person whose first name starts with the first letter of the previous last name. For example, you say Chris Hemsworth, the next person can say Harry Stiles, and so on.

If someone says a name that has the same letter as their first and last name, for example, Lindsay Lohan, then the order of players reverses. The first person to mess up loses and is out for the round.

28. BATTLE OF THE BANDS

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

This game is super fun for the whole family. It works especially well if someone has their phone connected to the car and can create playlists.

Two people are going head to head in this game to have their song chosen as the best in a category. One person is going to give out a theme, for example, “love songs” or “best fight songs.”

Two other contestants have one minute to choose their song. Each player then plays their song, and everyone in the car judges which song is better. Whoever wins gets one point, and the one with the most points wins.

29. WORD ASSOCIATION

WORD ASSOCIATION

I love games that make your brain work hard. This one will definitely do that and can also help kids with creativity. It can be played anytime you have some downtime, so the car ride is perfect!

The game is simple: start with a word, and the next person thinks of a word associated with it. The next person does the same with the previous word.

For example:

  • Haunted house
  • Meerkat

The game is over when someone says something crazy or can’t think of anything. However, if they can defend their answer, then the game can continue.

30. COW ON MY SIDE

COW ON MY SIDE

I absolutely loved this game as soon as I heard about it. It’s another one of those games that you can play throughout the trip and not be actively playing. Be sure to keep an eye out!

Throughout the road trip, anytime you see cows, you shout out, “ Cows on my side!” You get a point every time you call it out. If you see cows on the other side, you can yell, “Cows on your side!” If you call this before the other person sees them, you get to steal a point.

The person with the most points at the end of the trip wins. My favorite part of the game is if you see a cemetery and scream, “Ghost cow!” you get to steal all the other side’s points!

31. TRIPLE THREAT

TRIPLE THREAT

This is another one to help out with creativity. It is super fun to use random words that don’t coincide to make it a bit more difficult.

To play, you say three random words out loud. Then, each player has to tell a story using the three words. You get to be the judge and decide who told the best story.

The winner now gets to choose three words for the other players, and play continues.

YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP WILL BE A BLAST!

Road trips are a must for families who want to make memories together. Although they can be boring at times, with enough initiative, the road trips will create memories all on their own. Families will laugh, joke, and play games, making the trip seem faster than it is!

From trivia games to singing challenges, these are some games that will work for any family. Any age group can participate in these games, as many of them can be modified for younger players.

6 Car Games For Adults Perfect For Any Road Trip

road trip drinking games

Memorial Day is the perfect chance to grab your friends and get away for the long weekend . And don’t worry, there is still time for you to take a last minute trip out of town ! Many of you are probably planning to spend at least part of your weekend on a road trip to your destination — and I have some fun car game ideas for all you adults that will help the miles fly by.

When I was a kid, there were few things better than getting to spend a few uninterrupted hours playing Pokemon on my Gameboy , grooving to the latest NOW! CD, or playing tiny board games with my sister. But now, most of us spend our car trips either driving, or glued to our phones the whole time. That’s perfectly fine — we all know how important car selfies are. But isn’t taking a holiday road trip with your friends also an opportunity to, I don’t know, actually talk to your friends?

Game Boy Advance , $49, Amazon

I think we all have a good time playing games like Cards Against Humanity , but it’s hard to play in a cramped car while one of us is responsible for keeping the rest of us alive. So, play a few games that will have you laughing, and let you keep your eyes on the road (and yeah, take lots of selfies).

Cards Against Humanity , $25, Amazon

1. Never Have I Ever

This is usually a drinking game, but since safety and not getting arrested comes first, leave the alcohol until you arrive at your Memorial Day getaway. Instead, play the game as you usually would (if you have ever, take a drink), but with water, juice, soda, or whatever your drink of choice is. First one to have to use the bathroom, loses.

2. Swear Jar

Decide on a common word that will be off limits for the duration of the car trip. It doesn’t have to be a swear word, just a common word that everyone will use at least once during normal conversation. Try words like bathroom, cow, phone, etc. to try and trip people up. You can use real money, or have the offending passenger write their name on a scrap of paper and put it in the jar. The person with the most money or names in the jar has to buy the car a round of drinks at your destination, fill up the gas tank, or do something else of your choosing.

3. License Plate Game

Similar to good ol’ “Slug Bug,” every time you spot an out-of-state license plate , you can hit everyone else in the car. If you’re traveling with your significant other, you can turn the punches into caresses, instead. This game is perfect if you’re traveling to a tourist destination like Disneyland or Las Vegas.

4. Would You Rather?

We all know this game. Everyone takes turns asking whether the others would do something or another. Feel free to make it as gross, weird, and horrible as possible.

5. Story Time

Pick another car on the road, preferably one with a few passengers. Don’t be a creeper, but everyone in your car should at least get one good look at everyone. Once you’ve seen them, take turns deciding who these people are. Maybe they’re ex-circus performers on the run from the mob. Maybe they’re all sister wives on the way to a wedding. Whoever comes up with the most outrageous/accurate/hilarious story, wins.

6. Colored Cars

Everyone in the car has to choose an unusual color for a car (purple, yellow, mint green, etc.), and you get points for every car of that color you see. You could also make the game interesting by allowing passengers to steal points if they spot another passenger's color first. Or, you know, you could hit each other every time you see your color, because adulthood.
