WRC - Rovanperä secures commanding victory at Safari Rally, Greensmith wins WRC2
2024 Safari Rally Kenya - Sunday
- World Rally Championship
- SEASON 2024
- Safari Rally Kenya
Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen became two-time winners of Safari Rally Kenya on Sunday afternoon, ending the gruelling African fixture with a 1m 37.8s victory margin having led since Friday morning.
In by far the most gruelling FIA World Rally Championship round so far this season, it was Rovanperäâs meticulous balance of both speed and maturity that ultimately secured his 12th career victory.
The Finn, along with his navigator Halttunen, built a lead of almost one minute after winning all of Fridayâs rock-strewn stages around Lake Naivasha, then kept his nose clean to end Saturday two minutes clear as the chasing pack ran into mechanical troubles and tyre damage.
That buffer allowed the two-time WRC champion to drive for a finish in Sundayâs final leg, which culminated amid stunning scenery at Hell's Gate with Kenyan President William Ruto in attendance.
Takamoto Katstuta completed a Toyota GR Yaris 1-2 as the Japanese marque extended its manufacturersâ championship lead to four points over Hyundai Motorsport, while M-Sport Ford Puma hotshot Adrien Fourmaux bagged his second consecutive podium 47.3s behind.
âItâs always special to win here,â Rovanperä beamed. âAlso, a legendary event for Toyota. Weâve always been so good here and thatâs continuing. Like they say in Africa: the car in front is always a Toyota!*
âA big thanks to the team, everybody made a big effort to make the car work so well. I think me and Jonne did a good job, I donât think you can have a better Safari Rally than we did. No issues, clever driving and I think it was a good effort.â
Elfyn Evans ended Friday in contention for a podium but a fraught Saturday, which saw the Welshman stop twice to carry out stage-side wheel changes, meant he finished over four minutes back from his team-mate Rovanperä in fourth overall. He remains second in the driversâ championship behind leader Thierry Neuville, who trailed him by almost six minutes in fifth.
Neuville now heads Evans by six points but endured a troublesome week aboard his Hyundai i20 N. Fuel pressure problems on Saturday cost the Belgian several minutes and suspension damage on Sunday, inflicted by a rock on the racing line, added insult to injury. His colleagues, Esapekka Lappi and Ott Tänak fared worse.
Lappiâs problems included two broken gearboxes over the course of the week while Tänak could only climb back to eighth overall after his car sustained broken suspension on Friday.
Greensmithâs determination bears fruit with Safari WRC2 triumph
In 9th overall, Gus Greensmith, co-driven by Jonas Andersson, got his WRC2 campaign off to the perfect start after winning the championshipâs premier support category by 1m 23.1 in his Ĺ koda Fabia RS Rally2 for Toksport WRT.
The odds were stacked against the Briton early in the rally. He battled flu-like symptoms through Fridayâs opening leg on rough gravel roads around Lake Naivasha but charged to a commanding lead of more than three minutes after his main rival Oliver Solberg haemorrhaged time with punctures.
Solberg fought back to finish second in his similar car, winning 11 of the rallyâs 19 stages, but the deficit was ultimately too large to overcome. Greensmith was able to cruise through the closing kilometres, netting a mighty sixth-place overall result in the process.
Solberg posted the fastest time in the Wolf Power Stage, extending his lead in the championship while duly collecting the FORUM8 WRC2 Most Stage Wins Award. He finished more than seven minutes clear of third-placed Fabia man Kajetan Kajetanowicz, who also took the spoils in WRC2 Challenger.
Safari debutants Nicolas Ciamin and Charles Munster placed fourth and fifth respectively, both driving Hyundai i20 N Rally2 cars. Behind them was Daniel Chwist followed by local driver Carl Tundo, winner in the WRC Masters Cup contingent. As the sole finisher, Hamza Anwar secured maximum points in WRC3.
The WRC returns to asphalt for next month's Croatia Rally which takes place from 18 - 21 April. The event is based in capital city Zagreb.

How to watch WRC's Safari Rally: schedule, line-up and more
The safari rally hosts the third round of the 2024 world rally championship season, so here is how and when you can watch this weekendâs action..
The WRC heads to Kenya for its breathtaking Safari Rally to continue an epic start to the 2024 season.
Last time out, Esapekka Lappi ended a six-and-a-half-year victory drought by winning the attritional Rally Sweden after Kalle Rovanpera, Ott Tanak and Takamoto Katsuta all found the snowbanks.
The crashes handed a sizeable lead to Lappi, who won the weekend by 29.6 seconds for his first victory since Rally Finland in 2017. And such were the effects of the changeable conditions that WRC2âs Oliver Solberg ended Friday in third overall before eventually finishing fifth.
It followed the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally where Thierry Neuville began his championship hunt with a perfect rally of 30 points.
The Hyundai driver finished fourth in Sweden meaning he heads into Kenya leading the championship by three points with Toyotaâs Elfyn Evans in second after standing on the podium in both rounds this year. In quirk of the new points system , Evans left the rally scoring five more points than rally winner Lappi.
Neither Neuville nor Evans have won in Kenya though, which returned to the WRC calendar in 2021 after last appearing in 2002. However, their chances of victory have somewhat increased as Sebastien Ogier, who has won two of the past three Safari Rallies, will not be in Kenya this weekend due to the eight-time world champion only competing in WRCâs 2024 campaign part-time.
His Toyota entry will instead be going to the reigning two-time world champion Rovanpera, who is also competing in this yearâs WRC part-time, but will be present in Kenya which is a rally he won in 2022.
M-Sport Ford will expand to three Puma entries led by Adrien Fourmaux , who claimed his first career WRC top tier podium with third in Sweden. The Frenchman will be joined by regular team-mate Gregoire Munster and privateer Jourdan Serderidis , who is making his first Rally1 start of the year.
Snorkels will also be making a return in Kenya. A snorkel is a device attached to the front of a rally car and helps them to navigate through sections of tricky terrain by preventing water and dust from entering the engine.

When is the Safari Rally?
⢠Date: 28-31 March ⢠Start time: 9:26am GMT/12:26pm local time on Thursday 28 March
The Safari Rally starts at 9:26am in the United Kingdom and 12:26pm local time on Thursday 28 March. However, the first stage does not begin until later that day at 11:05am in the UK and 2:05pm local time once the ceremonial start has finished.
Before the opening stage of the Safari Rally is also the shakedown at 7am in the UK - 10am local time - on Wednesday 27 March, where drivers test various set-ups on their cars ahead of the weekend.
This Sunday morning will also see the UK clocks change with the start of British Summer Time. This means on the rallyâs final day, the time difference between Great Britain and Kenya will be two hours and not three.
How can I watch the WRC?
TNT Sports (formerly known as BT Sport) will live televise every round of the 2024 season as it holds the WRC broadcasting rights in the UK.
This means the WRC is not free-to-air as a subscription is needed to watch TNT. New customers can buy TNT for ÂŁ18 per month and that deal includes all four sport channels and Discovery+.
Discovery+ is TNTâs live streaming platform meaning rallyâs top category can be watched via a mobile or tablet device, as well as a console in 2024.
However, fans can also watch the WRC on Rally.tv, which has rights to broadcast the European Rally Championship and World Rallycross Championship as well. Rally.tv can be purchased via two deals: a yearly pass for ÂŁ119.99 or a monthly pass for ÂŁ12.99.

How can I watch the Safari Rally?
TNT Sports will begin its coverage at 7am on Wednesday for shakedown before live broadcasting every official stage of this weekendâs Safari Rally.
Its Thursday coverage will start at 11am - meaning the ceremonial start will not be broadcast - before early starts commence the action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, where TNT Sports will be on and off with its programmes depending on each stageâs start time.
Rally.tv will also be on and off with its coverage of the Safari Rally, however it will still live broadcast every stage of the weekend including the ceremonial start as opposed to TNT.
When can I watch Safari Rally highlights?
Highlights for the Safari Rally are available via TNT Sports, who will air a 30-minute package on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Red Bull TV will also broadcast a highlights programme at 7pm GMT on Friday and Saturday night, plus 8pm BST on Sunday night.
Another WRC highlights programme will be available via ITV4, whose package will run for one hour on Tuesday 2 April at 10:10pm BST.
Daily highlights are also available via Autosport, while WRCâs official YouTube channel will also upload a shorter highlights reel soon after each day has finished.
What is the route for the Safari Rally?
The Safari Rally consists of 19 special stages covering a total competitive distance of 221 miles on a gravel surface. An afternoon stage kicks off proceedings on Thursday with 2.78 miles of Kasarani, which is just on the outskirts of Kenyaâs capital Nairobi and is the only session that day.
The rally then heads north-west on Friday morning for 11.91 miles of Loldia before heading to Geothermal (8.15 miles) and Kedong (19.57 miles) with the same loop happening that afternoon.

Saturday at the Rally Safari also features two identical loops of three stages which begins with Soysambu (18.22 miles) in the south of Kenya, before heading to Elmenteita (9.37 miles) and the Sleeping Warrior stage (22.42 miles).
That is a crucial part of the weekend because the end of Saturday is when the bulk of points are provisionally awarded. WRC introduced a new structure for 2024 which sees a sliding scale of 18-15-13-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 awarded at the end of Saturday, however a crew will only score those points if it finishes on the Sunday.
The tally for a perfect rally remains 30 because a sliding scale of 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 is then used for Sunday, with bonus points of 5-4-3-2-1 on offer in the weekend closing Power Stage.
So, another early start commences Sundayâs finale in Kenya which, again, features two identical loops of three stages. Action kicks off with 5.18 miles of Malewa, close to the banks of Lake Naivasha, before heading to Oserian (11.39 miles) and Hellâs Gate (6.54 miles) which is also the Power Stage.

Belgian Thierry Neuville of Hyundai leads after day one of the Safari Rally Kenya which takes place this year during the rainy season
Belgian world championship leader Thierry Neuville took control of the Safari Rally Kenya on Thursday after the opening special stage ahead of Estonia's Ott Tanak, both driving a Hyundai.
Neuville edged Tanak by a slim 0.1-second margin after the 'super special' where drivers competed two by two over a short loop during the day's only stage on a rain-soaked and muddy track.
Finland's double reigning world champion Kalle Rovanpera was third fastest in a Toyota as the 23-year-old competes in just a few WRC world championship events this year.
Neuville leads Briton Elfyn Evans of Toyota by three points after two rounds of the championship in Monte Carlo and Sweden.
Even if Hyundai are off to a good start to the season with Neuville winning in Monte Carlo and Finn Esapekka Lappi in Sweden, the Toyotas are favourites in Kenya after winning the last three editions of the African event which made its return to WRC calendar in 2021.
The Safari Rally, third round of 13 in the championship, is considered the most difficult.
This year it takes place in the middle of the rainy season which makes the tracks muddy and difficult to navigate.
The 19 special stages covering 367.76 timed kilometres take place around Lake Naivasha and Lake Elementaita, in the middle of the Rift Valley, around 2,000 meters above sea level.
Belgian world championship leader Thierry Neuville took control of the Safari Rally Kenya on Thursday after the opening special stage ahead of Estonia's Ott Tanak, both driving a Hyundai.

Donald Trump traveling to Wisconsin for first off-day rally from New York hush money trial
WASHINGTON â Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Wisconsin next week in what is expected to be his first rally since his criminal trial began in New York this month.
Trump is scheduled to appear in Waukesha on Wednesday and plans to deliver remarks about 2 p.m. at the Waukesha County Expo Center, where he'll "contrast the peace, prosperity and security of his first term with Joe Bidenâs failed presidency," his campaign said.
The planned rally is the first for Trump since the start of his hush money trial in Manhattan. The former president has spent most of the past two weeks in court, largely unable to campaign. He's accused of falsifying business records during his 2016 campaign to conceal an affair.
He previously scheduled a rally in North Carolina this past weekend, but it was canceled due to stormy weather. His Wisconsin visit will fall on a Wednesday â the one day a week he is typically not required to be in court.
Trump plans to hold a rally in Freeland, Mich., later in the day.
The former president held his first Wisconsin rally of the election cycle earlier this month, when he stopped in Green Bay . There, he attacked President Joe Biden over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border â a key issue to his campaign.
âWeâre going to end up with the largest deportation in America," Trump told the crowd in Green Bay of his plans if reelected. "Iâm here to declare Bidenâs border bloodbath ⌠ends the day I take office. I will end the carnage."
On Wednesday, Trump is expected to again make the southern border a focal point. His campaign this week said Biden's border policies have "caused a crisis, with illegal immigrants and criminals funneling deadly drugs into Wisconsin communities."
Trump's visit to Wisconsin comes as President Joe Biden and his campaign have flooded the state over the last five months. Biden and his surrogates have made eight stops in the swing state since the start of the year. Biden was in Madison April 8 to unveiled a new student loan debt forgiveness plan.
Biden's campaign on Wednesday attacked Trump as having "nothing to offer but resentment and division."
âAfter spending the last few weeks dozing off and bragging about overturning Roe v. Wade, Donald Trump is visiting Waukesha next week in a desperate bid to do damage control on his record of ripping away womenâs freedoms and encouraging thousands of rioters to try to violently overturn an election," the Biden campaign said in a statement.
The recent visits will not be the last for either candidate.
Wisconsin is one of just a handful of states that will decide the next presidential contest, and Biden and Trump are locked in a tight rematch of 2020. A Marquette University Law Poll released last week showed Trump leading Biden 51%-49% among both registered voters and likely voters.
Still, as Biden continues to campaign across the country, Trump has been in a Manhattan courtroom. And his trial could take several weeks.
"I should be in Georgia now. I should be Florida now," Trump said ahead of one recent court appearance. "I should be a lot of different places right now campaigning, and I'm sitting here. And this will go on for a long time."
Election Updates: New York is the center of political attention again today, with Biden and Trump in the state.

President Biden is preparing to deliver a speech celebrating $6.1 billion in grants to Micron Technology, the latest federal award to bolster semiconductors. âItâs going to have a gigantic impact,â Biden said. As he entered the science and technology museum where he will speak here in Syracuse, a group of about 100 pro-Palestinian protesters across the street chanted âceasefire now!â

Five Republicans and three Democrats submitted signatures to the state of Michigan to try to qualify for their party primaries on Aug, 6 for the state's open U.S. Senate seat. G.O.P. petition filers included a trio of former House members: Mike Rogers, Peter Meijer and Justin Amash. The Democrats included Representative Elissa Slotkin and the actor Hill Harper.
Federal filings show that Christina Bobb was paid $5,288.82 on March 29 by the R.N.C., which provided a statement from Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesman, in response to questions about her status. Mr. Cheung said Ms. Bobbâs indictment in Arizona was another example of Democratsâ weaponization of the justice system. âThe Democrat platform for 2024: if you canât beat them, try to throw them in jail.â
One name to watch in the Arizona election indictment is Christina Bobb, a right-wing former lawyer for Donald Trump whom the R.N.C. hired as a senior election counsel. âThis tells you all you need to know about todayâs Republican National Committee,â Liz Cheney wrote on X , âThe person in charge of election integrity for the @GOP was just indicted in Arizona for a lack of election integrity.â
North Carolinaâs elections board said Thursday that felons who have not completed their sentences remain ineligible to vote, including parolees and those on probation and supervised release. It attempted to clarify their status after a federal judge on Monday blocked the state from enforcing an 1877 law, one criticized as discriminatory, that made it a crime for offenders who voted without knowing about the ban.

Donald Trump made a campaign stop this morning at a construction site in Manhattan, where he shook hands with union members. The brief visit, meant to highlight Trumpâs criticism of Bidenâs economic policies, exemplifies how his campaign intends to balance his court schedule with stops in media-heavy New York City that help him broadcast his national message.

Several lawyers and advisers to former President Donald J. Trump, including Rudolph W. Giuliani and Mark Meadows, were indicted in Arizona on Wednesday in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the case, as well as in a similar case in Michigan .
Donald Trumpâs legal team will argue to the Supreme Court this morning that he canât be prosecuted because former presidents have âabsolute immunityâ from criminal charges for acts they took in office. Trumpâs campaign, meanwhile, sent out a fund-raising email last night titled âPut Biden on Trial,â saying, âCROOKED JOE DESERVES LIFE IN PRISON!â
Chris Cameron
Biden is in Syracuse as Trumpâs trial continues in Manhattan.
President Biden is in Syracuse, N.Y., today to promote investments from the CHIPS and Science Act and other economic policies enacted during his administration.
The reliably blue state is again the center of political attention during the 2024 presidential campaign, after Mr. Biden and former President Donald J. Trump crossed paths last month . But it is the first time that Mr. Biden has traveled to the state during the felony criminal trial of Mr. Trump, his Republican rival.
Mr. Trumpâs trial in a Manhattan courthouse was in recess on Wednesday, and will pick back up today â most likely unfolding as Mr. Biden gives his speech in upstate New York, 250 miles away. Mr. Trump made a brief campaign stop early in the morning at a construction site in Manhattan.
It is a dynamic that will continue for at least several more weeks: While Mr. Biden campaigns across the country, Mr. Trump has often been in the Manhattan courtroom.
Mr. Trump has tried to make campaign stops outside of the courtroom, as he did Thursday morning, and on the weekends. But a rally that he had scheduled in North Carolina last weekend was called off because of weather.
And Mr. Trumpâs legal troubles have only grown in recent days. On Wednesday, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mark Meadows and a number of other Trump allies were indicted in Arizona for their role in a fake elector scheme in 2020 that sought to overturn the results of the election in that state. The indictment includes conspiracy, fraud and forgery charges, related to efforts by the defendants to change the 2020 election results.
Mr. Trump was also named an unindicted co-conspirator in the case.
On Wednesday evening, Mr. Trump weighed in on the growing pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses, distorting the mostly peaceful demonstrations as âriotsâ while downplaying the violence at a 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., saying that âCharlottesville is like a âpeanutââ in comparison to the current student protests.
Mr. Trump, in the same social media post, accused Mr. Biden of hating Israel and Jewish people, even as Mr. Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel as âironclad.â Mr. Trump has made similar accusations against Jews who vote for Democrats, saying that they hate Israel and their religion.
Trump makes a campaign stop in Manhattan before his trial resumes.
Hours before he was set to return to the courthouse for his criminal trial in Manhattan, former President Donald J. Trump started Thursday morning by visiting a construction site in a campaign stop that exemplified the balancing act required for a candidate who is also a criminal defendant.
In the shadow of what will eventually be the 70-story headquarters of one of the nationâs biggest banks, Mr. Trump shook hands with union workers in a visit meant to highlight his support from working-class voters and draw attention to his criticism of President Bidenâs economic policies.
His warm reception â a cheering crowd of roughly 100 people gathered behind him, chanting âwe want Trumpâ â marked a stark contrast from the sober environment of the courthouse where Mr. Trump has spent most weekdays since his trial began last week, and where his comments have largely been limited to addressing reporters in the hallway during breaks.
Mr. Trump has not held a rally since just before the trial began, in part because a planned event in North Carolina last weekend was canceled because of weather. But his visit to the construction site typifies how his campaign is using retail stops in New York, a left-leaning state not expected to be in play in November, to help broadcast his national message.
âI have a lot of support here,â Mr. Trump said, as roughly two dozen workers clambered up scaffolding and equipment to catch a glimpse of him. Among those in the crowd were members of the Teamsters union, whose endorsement Mr. Trump has been courting.
The trip to the construction site kicks off what will be a significant day in Mr. Trumpâs legal battles. In Manhattan, where Mr. Trump is accused of falsifying business records, David Pecker, the former publisher of The National Enquirer, is expected to return to the stand and detail the hush-money payment at the center of his case. Asked by reporters, Mr. Trump said that Mr. Pecker had been âvery niceâ and called him a ânice guy.â
In Washington, the Supreme Court will consider Mr. Trumpâs argument that he is immune from prosecution on federal charges that he plotted to subvert the 2020 election. Mr. Trump, who will likely be in the Manhattan courtroom during the oral arguments before the Supreme Court, repeated an argument he has been making for months that âa president has to have immunity, otherwise you just have a ceremonial president.â
Mr. Trumpâs appeal to working-class voters was key to his victory in 2016, and as he tries to return to the White House, he has been eager to win the support of rank-and-file union members and to drive a wedge between them and labor leaders who have long favored Democrats.
In January, Mr. Trump met with the Teamsters unionâs executive board and said he believed he had a âgood shotâ at securing the influential unionâs endorsement. The union endorsed Mr. Biden in 2020, and its leaders met with the president last month.
Mr. Biden has for years touted his allegiance to unions. On Wednesday he received the endorsement of the North Americaâs Building Trades Unions, an umbrella group whose leaders pointed to Mr. Bidenâs bipartisan infrastructure package.
Jason Miller, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said that Thursdayâs visit had been âon the books for some timeâ and was part of the campaignâs larger strategy to contend with the scheduling challenges posed by the Manhattan trial.
âSince the Biden Trials are an attempt to keep us off the campaign trail, weâll bring the campaign trail to us,â he said. Mr. Trump has said without citing evidence that the charges are part of an âelection interferenceâ scheme orchestrated by Mr. Biden.
Trump compares campus protests to the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville during his presidency.
Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday played down the violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 while portraying a recent wave of vocal but predominantly peaceful pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses as âriots.â
One woman was killed and nearly 40 people were injured when an avowed neo-Nazi plowed his car through a crowd of counterprotesters during violent clashes in Charlottesville. Earlier, hundreds of white supremacists had marched through the city, carrying torches and chanting, âJews will not replace us.â
The current campus protests, while resulting in dozens of arrests, have had no reports of significant violence.
In a post on his social media site, peppered with random capitalization, Mr. Trump said: âJoe Biden would say, constantly, that he ran because of Charlottesville,â he wrote of the 2020 election. âWell, if thatâs the case, heâs done a really terrible job because Charlottesville is like a âpeanutâ compared to the riots and anti-Israel protests that are happening all over our Country, RIGHT NOW.â
Mr. Trump also repeated an attack on President Biden, saying that he âHATES Israel and Hates the Jewish people,â while adding âthe problem is that he HATES the Palestinians even more, and he just doesnât know what to do!?!?â
Representatives for the Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
Mr. Trump â who also presided over civil unrest set off by the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in May 2020 â sought to downplay a chapter of his presidency that garnered widespread outrage and criticism.
In Charlottesvilleâs aftermath, Mr. Trump repeatedly drew a moral equivalency between the white supremacists â who brandished swastikas, Confederate flags and âTrump/Penceâ signs â and peaceful counterprotesters, asserting that there were âvery fine people on both sides.â
Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, said in a statement that âthe American people are not going to be lectured toâ by Mr. Trump, pointing to his equivocating statements in the aftermath of the far-right rally at Charlottesville. He added that Mr. Trump âwas never in touch with the vast majority of the American people, but his years down in Mar-a-Lago have him even more unhinged heading into 2024.â
Underpinning the Charlottesville gathering of neo-Nazis, antisemites and white supremacists was a racist conspiracy theory, called the great replacement theory, which says that elites, sometimes manipulated by Jews, seek to âreplaceâ and disempower white Americans. The growing prominence of the theory in far-right circles has incited racist terror attacks across the world, including several mass shootings in the United States.
Mr. Biden has in recent months faced protests and opposition to his presidential campaign from Americans who are sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians and angry at the United States for arming Israel in the fighting in Gaza. Mr. Trumpâs social media post on Wednesday sought to portray many of these protesters as a riotous mob, while also seeking to stoke protestersâ anger by claiming that Mr. Biden hates the Palestinians.
Mr. Trump has also repeatedly insulted Jews who vote for Democrats and for Mr. Biden, saying that they hate their religion and Israel .
Some of the campus demonstrations have included hate speech and expressions of support for Hamas, the militant group in Gaza that carried out attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people. In response to those attacks by Hamas, Israel has waged a war on Gaza, killing more than 34,000 people, mostly women and children , according to the Gaza Health Ministry. This week Mr. Biden condemned demonstrations that he said veered into antisemitism, but he also expressed sympathy for the Palestinians.
âI condemn the antisemitic protests,â Mr. Biden told reporters on Monday. âI also condemn those who donât understand whatâs going on with the Palestinians.â

UT-Austin students hold pro-Palestinian protest; at least 50 arrested
Editor's note: See the latest updates from Thursday's planned protest at the UT campus .
More than 50 people were arrested at a peaceful, pro-Palestinian protest Wednesday at the University of Texas hosted by the Palestine Solidarity Committee, a registered student group and a chapter of the national Students for Justice in Palestine, which held the rally to call for an end to the Israel-Hamas war.
The Palestine Solidarity Committee planned the protest in solidarity with students across the U.S. who have been demanding their universities to divest from Israeli businesses and for the federal government to stop backing Israel's military as more than 30,000 people have died in Gaza amid the ongoing Mideast conflict.
About 54 people were being held at the Travis County Jail in relation to the protest, according to George Lobb, an attorney with the Austin Lawyers Guild who was assisting people who had been arrested. Twenty had been booked into the jail shortly after 8 p.m., Travis County sheriff's office spokesperson Kristen Dark said.
The protest had quieted shortly after 6 p.m., more than six hours after it began. Police pushed the protesters away from the UT campus toward Guadalupe Street, but a crowd of protesters returned to the campus's South Lawn and remained there as of 7:45 p.m.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that 34 people had been arrested in the protest as of 9 p.m.
UT professor says she expects Thursday rally to take pro-Palestine stance
Pavithra Vasudevan, a professor at UT, told the American-Statesman that students had planned an âeducationalâ event about Palestine for the afternoon and had asked faculty members, including Vasudevan, to lead workshops. Vasudevan was present when police began arresting protesters.
âThe president and university administration chose to militarize our campus in response ⌠to students gathering to express themselves,â Vasudevan said.
Vasudevan said that faculty members had planned a rally Thursday around staff and program cuts under a state law banning diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at public universities, but she now expected it to be focused on Wednesdayâs events.
She told the Statesman that she was âmotivated by studentsâ courageâ in a university atmosphere that she described as ârepressive.â She said that faculty members had been prohibited from discussing the Israel-Hamas conflict with students, but she felt that it was imperative to speak out.
âWe cannot continue with business as usual,â Vasudevan said.
Travis County attorney urges protesters to leave UT campus Wednesday evening
Travis County Attorney Delia Garza issued a statement around 7 p.m. Wednesday asking the crowd to disperse "for the safety of all."
Garza said the protest and "the overwhelming police response to what appears to have been a peaceful demonstration should be concerning to all who believe in our constitution."
"We are working with defense attorneys of those arrested as we continue to investigate each case and determine if charges are necessary," Garza said in the statement. "We ask that anyone released not return to campus."
Timeline of the protest
As students walked out of class at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday to begin protesting, state and university police descended on horses, bikes, motorcycles, cars and on foot to meet the rallygoers. Around 5:20 p.m., the university issued a dispersal order asking everyone to leave the campus South Mall area "immediately."
"UT Austin does not tolerate disruptions of campus activities or operations like we have seen at other campuses," the UT Division of Student Affairs said in a statement before the protest. "This is an important time in our semester with students finishing classes and studying for finals and we will act first and foremost to allow those critical functions to proceed without interruption."
Dozens of DPS troopers in riot gear marched down the Speedway Mall once protesters began marching late Wednesday morning. UT police were also on hand. After about 45 minutes of the crowd marching south on the mall from the Gregory Gym area, police ordered the protesters to disperse or "be arrested as per the penal code."
The DPS in a statement late Wednesday afternoon said the university and Gov. Greg Abbott had requested its assistance in preventing any "unlawful assembly and to support UT police in maintaining the peace by arresting anyone engaging in any sort of criminal activity, including criminal trespass."
Protesters began to disperse after an event organizer repeated the officers' order to leave the area. But students soon walked back, chanting and regathering on the Speedway Mall, which resulted in multiple arrests. Statesman reporters on the ground witnessed at least 30.
By 2 p.m., as police began dispersing protesters from the Speedway Mall area, the students moved toward the UT Tower and to the South Lawn where they began setting up tents for an encampment, which the Palestine Solidarity Committee had said was its intention. Police took the tents down almost immediately.
Police, first led by UT officers and later joined by DPS troopers and Austin police officers, confronted the crowd, each time seemingly indiscriminately arresting protesters at the front of the pack. Police then pushed protesters back, knocking down a large, pop-up tent station that had water and food for protesters. Law enforcement then created a large circle on the South Lawn and pushed protesters to the sides.
Just after 4 p.m., mounted officers and a line of troopers with riot shields and batons began a push to get protesters off the South Lawn. Multiple arrests were made during this push, including of a photographer with local TV news outlet FOX 7 Austin.
Mounted police eventually pushed protesters to Guadalupe and 22nd streets by about 6 p.m., and the officers then went south on Guadalupe, leaving the protest.
Protesters then made their way back to the South Lawn and resumed chanting as of 6:40 p.m. Police were no longer confronting protesters at that time, but the Tower remained barricaded.
In an Instagram post around 6 p.m., the Palestine Solidarity Committee claimed that at least 50 protesters had been arrested and urged people to call and show up at the Travis County Jail to demand the protesters' release.
Mere Villanueva, a third-year UT student, said her back was injured when she was pushed into a pole as police moved protesters off the South Lawn. âWeâre here to lift up Palestinian voices,â she said. âWithout protests, thereâs no freedom.â
UT takes stand against pro-Palestinian protest
The protest, according to an Instagram post, intended to "reclaim" the lawn in front of the Tower.
Officials with the Dean of Students Office on Tuesday sent the Palestine Solidarity Committee a letter saying its protest was not authorized on campus. In the letter, Aaron Voyles, executive director for student involvement, and Melissa Jones-Wommack, acting executive director of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity, said that though UT supports free speech, its first priority is to "protect our educational mission."
"Simply put, the University of Texas at Austin will not allow this campus to be 'taken' and protestors to derail our mission in ways that groups affiliated with your national organization have accomplished elsewhere," the letter said.
At Columbia University in New York on April 18, 100 pro-Palestinian students who set up encampments to demand their university to divest from Israel were arrested. On Monday night, 44 students and four others at Yale University were arrested for a similar encampment Monday night after the university gave warnings and determined the protests were unsafe and disruptive, the president said. Students protesting at New York University have also been arrested. Protests have broken out at several other universities across the country this week.
AnachiĚ Ponce, a UT student who attended the protest, said as students first dispersed that the police presence at the protest was unnecessary.
"The university would rather enforce and put money into policing our communities and policing their own students than they would to supporting them," Ponce said. "These are students who are protesting a genocide and the lack of action from UT administration for the way that they haven't been super helpful against hate crimes against Muslim students on campus."
The protests across university campuses have called for their institutions to divest from Israeli businesses and weapons manufacturers â a demand the Palestine Solidarity Committee also listed in its November walkout that had more than 1,000 students participating. UT's investments are controlled by UTIMCO, which manages the investments for both Texas A&M and University of Texas systems.
Gov. Greg Abbott on March 27 issued an executive order calling for universities to curb antisemitism by revising their free speech policies â specifically mentioning the Palestine Solidarity Committee and Student Justice for Palestine as groups to enforce the policies against, including up to expulsion.
The protests come as the Jewish community celebrates Passover, something UT's Texas Hillel, a hub for Jewish student life on campus, noted in its statement offering safety resources ahead of the protest.
"The timing of this protest is not lost on us â making use of a Jewish holiday and observance to promote a hateful agenda â and we quickly contacted our university and security partners to begin coordinating a response plan to keep our campus and our students safe," Hillel's statement said.
"The university has assured us there will be no tolerance for disruption or behaviors misaligned to University policy and the governor's executive order," it added.
Students chanted "Free Palestine" and against the occupation of Gaza and against police who were present at the rally. They also chanted against UT President Jay Hartzell and Abbott, who they say are complicit in the violence in Gaza.
At UT, students have held peaceful protests in support of Israel and Palestinians without incident. But this semester, students have been punished for pro-Palestinian activism that the university said was extreme and inappropriate, including four students who entered a dean's office to advocate for two teaching assistants who were removed from their positions after sending a pro-Palestinian message to their class's messaging page. The teaching assistant's grievances against the school, alleging that their academic freedom was violated by their job reassignments, were denied by Hartzell in March.
State Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, posted on X prior to the protest warning students that police will take any act of violence seriously, saying, "An Aggie Senator's advice to these students is simply while the right of freedom of speech is a Constitutional guarantee in the United States, reclaiming something you don't own is not!"
'This is wrong'
Austin City Council Member Zohaib âZoâ Qadri, who represents the part of Austin where UT is located, told the Statesman in an interview Wednesday that it was shocking and hard to watch âthe physical violence being used on students.â
âThe fact that now we have DPS troopers on our flagship university on the ground hurting people and taking away their voices â I think we should all be able to say this is wrong,â Qadri told the Statesman.Â
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Qadri said, âWe need answers as to why such a flagrant and wasteful show of force by DPS was authorized, and if any peaceful protestors had their 1st Amendment Rights violated.âÂ
Statesman City Hall reporter Ella McCarthy contributed to this report.

Big names turn out for Safari WRC2 battle
The battle for WRC2 honours at this monthâs Safari Rally Kenya (28 - 31 March) will be the most intense since the Naivasha-based eventâs return to the FIA World Rally Championship.
Rally Sweden winner Oliver Solberg will start the African classic as favourite. The 22-year-old Swede has finished in the top 10 overall in Kenya for the last two seasons (driving a Hyundai i20 N Rally1 in 2022), but this will be his first time chasing points for the WRC2 crown.
Solberg runs his usual Ĺ koda Fabia RS Rally2 for what will be his fourth Safari start (he retired a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC from the 2021 event).
Fellow Fabia driver Gus Greensmith starts his 2024 campaign at the longest rally of the season so far (the Safari delivers 355 competitive kilometres across 19 stages). While the Englishman skipped last yearâs event, he finished an impressive fourth â his best ever WRC finish â on the 2021 fixture aboard a Ford Fiesta WRC.
Nicolas Ciamin will be aiming to better the fourth place he scored on the season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo. The Hyundai i20 N Rally2 driver is making his Safari debut this time around.
Winner of the WRC2 category for the last two years, Kajto Kajetanowicz is another to make his maiden 2024 appearance on the March 28-31 rally. The Polish star understands better than anybody else in the field what it takes to win arguably the seasonâs toughest event.
Charles Munster (Hyundai i20 N Rally2), Diego DomĂnguez Jr (CitroĂŤn C3 Rally2) and Daniel Chwist (Ĺ koda Fabia RS Rally2) are among the other leading entries, along with local hero Carl Tundo in a Ford Fiesta R5. The entry list for the third round of the championship includes 14 RC2 cars.

Elon takes a question about FSD regulatory approval
"It's helpful that other autonomous car companies have been cutting a path through the regulatory jungle," Musk says.
Musk says he doesn't think there will be "significant regulatory barriers" to Tesla's Full Self-Driving software being approved for use more widely. The driver-assist software currently requires a licensed driver to monitor it.
Eventually, there will be 10 million Tesla robotaxis around the world, he says.

Tesla takes a dig at hybrid cars
"Global EV sales continue to be under pressure as many carmakers prioritize hybrids over EVs," the company says in its earnings release. "While positive for our regulatory credits business, we prefer the industry to continue pushing EV adoption, which is in-line with our mission."
Musk has dismissed the wildly popular, and often more affordable segment , in the past. In 2022, he called it a "phase," saying on X that it's "Time to move on from hybrid cars."

Barclays says Tesla is 'facing an investment thesis pivot.'
Barclays said in a note last week it expected Tesla's earnings call to be a negative catalyst for the stock as investors came to terms with the company's potential strategic redirection away from a low-cost Model 2.
"Facing an investment thesis pivot and a sea of uncertainty, this Tesla call is extra highly anticipated," a Barclays analyst, Dan Levy, said. "Expect negative catalyst."
Levy said he thought Tesla's closely watched first-quarter gross margins would be below consensus estimates on Wall Street.
Barclays rates Tesla at "neutral," with a $180 price target.
Bank of America says 'results matter, but growth factors may matter more.'
Bank of America said Tesla's headwinds are well known and are likely fully reflected in the stock price. That will make the company's commentary around the current state of EV demand and its future growth plans all the more important.
They think that could be setting up the stock for a positive reaction.
"Despite near term pressures, the unveiling of future growth drives has the potential to support the stock," Bank of America said. "Results matter, but growth factors may matter more."
While the bank doesn't expect Tesla to make any big product announcements during its earnings call, it could provide some hints on the highly anticipated Robotaxi event which is scheduled for August 8. Tesla could also reiterate its intention to launch a low-cost Model 2 in 2025 or 2026, which would likely be met with a positive price reaction in the stock.
Bank of America rates Tesla at "Neutral" with a $220 price target.
Wedbush says Tesla's upcoming earnings report is 'a moment of truth' for the company.
Analyst Dan Ives said the current environment for Tesla is reminiscent of the challenges and uncertainty the company faced in 2015, 2018, and 2020, but it could result in a loss of long-term shareholders.
"This time is clearly a bit different as for the first time many long time Tesla believers are giving up on the story and throwing in the white towel," Ives said.
Ives said it is crucial that Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirms that a low-cost Model 2 is still on the company's product road map, and said that first-quarter results will likely take a backseat to any updates to the company's long-term vision.
Wedbush rates Tesla at "Outperform" with a $300 price target.
JPMorgan says Tesla's recent layoffs suggest the company's long-term growth prospects are dwindling.
Tesla's recent layoffs suggest the company's long-term growth prospects are dwindling, according to a recent note from JPMorgan .
">10% global layoff undermines hypergrowth narrative and should further dispel notion big 1Q delivery miss was somehow supply-driven," JPMorgan said.
Instead, Tesla's big first-quarter delivery miss was likely driven by a concerning decline in demand for electric vehicles, according to the note.
And the company's premium valuation is at substantial risk if growth is stuttering.
JPMorgan rates Tesla at "Underweight" with a $115 price target.

Rovanpera hails "clever" plan to seal faultless wrc safari win, world rally champion kalle rovanpera believes it is impossible to deliver a better drive to victory at safari rally kenya than what he produced this weekend..
Rovanpera and co-driver Jonne Halttunen delivered a faultless performance to conquer the WRCâs most gruelling event in style.
The two-time world champions, competing in a partial season this year, won seven of the 19 demanding gravel stages but crucially were the only Rally1 pairing to avoid any punctures, accidents or mechanical issues.
Rovanpera was able to judge his pace in the tricky conditions that allowed the Finn to build a lead of more than two minutes before opting to back off on Sunday, eventually taking the win by 1m37.8s from Toyota team-mate Takamoto Katsuta .
âIt is always special, this event is so tough and also it is a legendary event for Toyota, and we have always been good here and we are still continuing to do that,â said Rovanpera, who chalked up his 12th career WRC win. âLike they say here in Africa: âThe car in front is always a Toyotaâ.
âI have to say a big thanks to the team, everyone made a big effort to make the car work so well. I think me and Jonne did a good job, I think you cannot do a better Safari Rally than what we did, we had no issues for the whole weekend, and it was clever driving. I think it was a good effort.

âAt this rally, if you finish like this, it is a big relief because you are not fighting with all the drivers all the weekend, you are fighting the conditions.
âWe had zero issues on the car and the tyres so I donât think you can drive more clever at this rally. We were fast, we had the speed, but it was not about that, we had the speed and we used it well.â
The victory was Rovanperaâs and Toyotaâs first triumph of the 2024 campaign, maintaining the Japanese brandâs dominance in Kenya, which now stands at four consecutive wins since the eventâs return to the WRC in 2021.
âThis is our first win of the season, a couple of rounds before have been a bit tough and now we have got victory here in style,â said Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala .
âI must say that Kalle dominated the rally from the beginning, and he had a very clever approach. He didnât have any issue over the weekend, thanks to the team producing such a good car, but also because of the way he was able to drive.â

Stock market today: US stocks mixed as traders brace for GDP data and more earnings
- US stocks traded mostly lower on Wednesday as traders eyed the release of first-quarter GDP data.
- Investors are sifting through earnings, with mega-cap tech results rolling in.
- Tesla rallied Wednesday as traders cheered news of a cheaper vehicle model in the works.
US stocks were mostly lower on Wednesday as traders prepared for the release of first-quarter GDP data and digested the latest round of corporate earnings.
Investors are waiting on advanced estimates for first-quarter GDP to roll out tomorrow morning, which will give markets a sense of how strong the economy is growing and point to the Federal Reserve's next move.
The US is expected to have expanded 2.7% in the first three months of the year, according to Atlanta Fed economists , but an especially strong print would raise the risk that the Fed keeps policy tight in order to prevent inflation from gaining a foothold again.
Markets are pricing in just one or two rate cuts for the year, according to the CME FedWatch tool, down from as many as seven cuts seen at the start of 2024.
Investors are also preparing to take in more earnings results, which have been resilient so far this quarter. The S&P 500 looks on track to post 7% year-per-year earnings growth , according to FactSet. Of the companies that have reported financials so far, 74% have beat earnings estimates .
Facebook parent Meta Platforms will report after the closing bell, while Microsoft and Alphabet will report results after the close on Thursday.
Tesla shares jumped 11% higher on Wednesday after the carmaker's latest earnings report. Revenue came in below expectations, but investors were pleased with the company's confirmation that a low-cost electric vehicle was set to roll out sometime next year.
Here's where US indexes stood at the 4 p.m. closing bell on Wednesday:
- S&P 500 : 5,071.67, up 0.02%
- Dow Jones Industrial Average : 38,460.92, down 0.11% (-42.77 points)
- Nasdaq Composite : 15,712.75, up 0.1%
Here's what else is going on:
- A rare bifurcation in the US economy is raising the odds of recession , one economist warns.
- AI's impact doesn't make it immune to a crash , according to billionaire investor Howard Marks.
- Tesla stock could see 35% upside if it follows a four-part plan, Bank of America said.
- Tesla is headed for a new growth phase as Elon Musk is finally the "adult in the room," Wedbush's Dan Ives said.
In commodities, bonds, and crypto:
- West Texas Intermediate crude oil dropped by 0.5% to $82.91 a barrel. Brent crude , the international benchmark, slipped 0.3% to 88.13 a barrel.
- Gold edged lower to $2,332 an ounce.
- The 10-year Treasury yield rose four basis points to 4.644%.
- Bitcoin was down 3.29% to $64,393.
