  • The Savvy Traveler’s African Safari Packing List

by Nichole | Last updated Mar 29, 2024 | Safari Packing List , South Africa

Aw, the African safari. No matter if it’s your first or tenth safari trip, the safari drive is exhilarating and new every time you set foot in that jeep. What you pack is very important in order to make your experience comfortable and memorable. My husband and I have done two safaris: one in Chobe in Botswana and one in Lion Sands in South Africa . Here are my ultimate 24 items on my safari packing list that I was glad I had.

Safari packing list essentials: sporting our lightweight sun protective clothing at Chobe National Park

Struggling to figure out what to wear on your safari trip?

You are not alone. I had no clue where to begin. My initial searches showed all the same clothing. Khaki colors, lots of pockets, boxy styles. Blah.

Then I started searching for companies specializing in travel and outdoor activities like fishing, camping, and hiking. Ok, now I was on to something.

Look for lightweight, breathable, and sun protective clothing from stores like the ones below:

I have a whole article dedicated to the best safari clothing for women. The best safari shirts and pants are included PLUS multiple outfit examples.

Photographing a rhino while on a South Africa safari at Lion Sands River Lodge

Three reasons why you need to put a scarf (love the fun colors from Orvis !) on your safari packing list:

✔️    #1- WARMTH

Our morning safaris were cold!

It was in the mid-50s°F in the mornings when we went at the end of September. The Lion Sands River Lodge did provide warm blankets in our jeep, but you need to layer up!

The scarf comes in handy to give you that extra layer of warmth around your neck.

There was one very cool, windy morning, in particular, that I even contemplated if I should have brought my beanie and gloves.

Check the weather and consider a few more cold-weather accessories for your trip if it looks like it is going to be chilly.

✔️    #2- DUST

Remember, at least in South Africa, you are sitting in an open-top jeep fully exposed to the elements. If you get a little dusty, the scarf comes in handy to do a quick wipe-off.

It also doubles as a wipe for your camera lens if you need it.

✔️    #3- SUN PROTECTION

You will feel that sun on the back of your neck. The scarf also serves to protect your skin from UV radiation.

✔️   SCARF ALTERNATIVE

If you anticipate your safari location will include eating a lot of dust, consider a neck gaiter .

It is a piece of bunchy UPF 50 fabric that can be worn in multiple ways: a headband, neckerchief, face mask, hood, hair tie, and the list goes on.

It helps to block the sun, give you warmth, and keep dust off your face.

Wearing my safari hat and taking photos of elephants in Chobe National Park Botswana

Your skin will literally cook if you do not bring a hat.  Please put this on your safari packing list. There are so many great cute options out there.

One of my favorites is my packable J.crew hat . It “squishes” down nicely in my luggage. I’ve used it all over the Caribbean and for two African safaris: Chobe in Botswana and Lion Sands in South Africa.

Orvis Women’s Saddle Packable Felt Hat

Blundstone Chelsea Boots

Unless you are doing a walking safari or trekking through the forests of Rwanda looking for gorillas, you do not need clunky boots.

Most blogs will tell you that you need them.

I disagree.

Plus, why pay for something you are going to use once, and then it just sits in the closet?

I brought three pairs of shoes for our safari experience. Remember you need to pack light! Those little planes taking you to your safari destination are tiny and have weight limits.

Now, if you are doing a walking safari, then the Blundstone Chelsea boots pictured above are a great option.

Saucony Peregrine Trail Runners

Trail running shoes work great as part of your safari outfit. They are lightweight and have a little bit of tread for rougher terrain.

They can also double as a running shoe for the gym (if your lodge has one) or a spontaneous hike (if other locations like Cape Town are part of your itinerary). We also hiked Lion’s Head in Cape Town , so my trail runners worked out great for both situations.

The Saucony Peregrine is a great choice and comes in fun colors.

Rothy’s Slip On Sneaker in Sand

Ok, so how does this fantastic shoe work into your safari outfit?

Sometimes my feet just needed a break from socks/trail running shoes (I hate wearing socks!).

I wore Rothy’s Slip On Sneaker on two days of our safari. If they get dusty, remember you can wash them! Also, they work out as a great shoe just lounging around the safari lodge.

The only time I would not wear these is if you are going on a walking safari or if you are going on an evening safari drive (the mosquitoes will find your ankles).

Cole Haan Flyn Sandal in Pecan Leather

My favorite super comfortable,  go-to travel sandal is my Cole Haan Flynn sandal . They feel like butter on my feet. Super comfortable.

I wore these sandals around the safari lodge, going to the spa, and for dinners when I wanted to dress up an outfit a little bit. They were a great way to give your feet a break at the end of a long day.

Wearing my light down jacket with our safari ranger and tracker at Lion Sands River Lodge

Of course, the decision to bring a jacket will depend on the time of year you are going. When we went to South Africa in September, the mornings were chilly!

Layer, layer, layer.

Consider the REI lightweight down jacket that has a durable water resistant coating.

Anatomie Kenya Safari Jacket

Another alternative I love that is comfortable and very stylish is the Anatomie Kenya Safari Jacket .

Wearing Ray- Ban sunglasses

Love polarized sunglasses!

They reduce eye strain and cut down the glare especially when you are looking for animals in the distance on your safari.

My favorites are from Ray-Ban . I did not take a photo of my sunglasses while on safari, so I included the one I took while we were in New Zealand.

Swimming in Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls on the Zambia side

If your safari lodge has a pool, don’t forget the bathing suit!

We did one of the most epic experiences I have ever done … swimming in Devil’s Pool on top of Victoria Falls , the world’s largest waterfall! So I was already planning on bringing a bathing suit.

When we were in Sabi Sands at the end of September, it was too chilly to swim in the lodge’s pool. Check the weather before you go.

ExOfficio Thong Underwear

You may want to check with your safari lodge first before deciding on how much to bring.

The alternative is to bring a little packet of laundry detergent and hand wash them in the sink and air-dry.

PRO TIP: If you have a dermatologist, they will often have samples of hypoallergenic laundry detergent. Ask for a few samples. Great for travel.

There is a thing called “travel underwear.” My husband swears by the ExOfficio men’s boxer brief . It is made of quick-drying, breathable mesh fabric and has been treated with an odor-reducing antimicrobial treatment.

ExOfficio also makes chafe-free, high-performance women’s underwear.

Chalkley Treehouse at Lion Sands River Lodge in Sabi Sand

They are lightweight and come in multiple colors.

I used the daypack to carry my camera, lenses, GoPro, hat, sunscreen, sweatshirt, water bottle, binoculars, wet wipes, and a little brush. It is washable (wash on a delicate cycle and then air dry). This is important because it will be sitting on the bottom of the jeep floor and may get dirty.

I would not bring an expensive bag for the safari because of that reason.

I practice what I preach!

Using binoculars to scan the Chobe River in Botswana trying to find some animals

When we did a safari with Lion Sands River Lodge in Sabi Sand in South Africa, binoculars WERE provided.

So, check with your safari lodge first if they provide binoculars because that may be one less thing to bring!

Travelpro Platinum Magna 24 Expandable Rollaboard in Sienna

Why a soft-sided suitcase?

✔️    LIGHTWEIGHT

Safari vehicles do not have much space, and those little safari planes cannot carry too much weight.

We took South Africa Airlink from Cape Town to Skukuza Airport in Sabi Sand, and our weight limit was 20 kg (44 lbs). I have read some countries have an even lower weight limit of 15 kg (33 lbs).

If your safari lodge transport is one of the small propeller planes, then it is highly suggested to only bring a soft-sided duffel.

Some airports (like Skukuza Airport) allow you to store your main luggage for free and then you can transfer your “safari clothes” into a duffel for the small plane ride.

The plane we used to get from Cape Town to Lion Sands River Lodge via the Skukuza Airport was small, but it was not one of those small propeller planes.

South Africa Airlink Baggage Requirements

✔️    WHY I LOVE TRAVELPRO

I brought my trustworthy durable soft-sided Travelpro Platinum Magna Rollaboard that I have had since 2013. The name of the line has now changed from Platinum Magna to Platinum Elite.

The TravelPro brand is a flight crew favorite. It was even featured in the movie Up In The Air with George Clooney.

It also has a Lifetime Limited Worry-Free Warranty.

I have traveled to 32 countries and have had to perform a repair only ONCE.

When I was wheeling my luggage around in Rome, I took it across several sections of cobblestone (oops, this was my fault) which damaged one of the wheels.

Because I had purchased from the Travelpro Platinum line, the wheels were covered under the lifetime warranty.

Weather is unpredictable. You never know when it may suddenly change and you end up soaked like what happened when we were hiking around Machu Picchu in Peru. Luckily, our guide was kind enough to provide ponchos for us.

This is a must on your safari packing list: Sawyer Permethrin spray and Repel Deet roll-on stick

Malaria does exist throughout Africa!

Forget the lemongrass, citronella, and mosquito bracelets. You will need the strong stuff. The travel clinic I saw before our trip advised a Deet concentration of 30%.

Higher concentrations of Deet do not mean it will work better but it will last longer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Deet concentrations of 50% or higher do not offer a substantial increase in protection. CDC recommends 20% Deet or greater.

Now you can apply this bug spray in a lot of different ways: sprays, wipes, lotions, or a stick. My preferred method of applying is the roll-on stick or bug spray .

Why? Because it is portable, does not drip, and it will not get all over my fingers and hands.

The other way you can fight off these mosquitoes is by spraying Permethrin on your clothing and allowing it to dry. A lot of hikers swear by this ingredient.

The highly-rated Sawyer Premium Permethrin Insect Repellant can last up to 6 weeks or 6 washings. You can spray it on clothes and outdoor gear without damaging or staining them.

Other common-sense measures to avoid mosquito bites are wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, avoiding dusk and dawn if possible, and avoiding standing water where they like to breed.

Quick drying microfiber towel

Do not forget this safari packing list item: Canon Rebel DSLR

We bought a Canon Rebel DSLR camera and then just stopped using it because it was heavy and a pain to lug around.

Plus, the iPhone kept coming out with better and better cameras making it easy to get amazing shots while traveling.

However, I promise you that taking photos on your iPhone while on a safari will not cut it.

The safari is the one travel experience you do not want to leave your DSLR camera behind. A fair amount of shots you take will be from a distance, and you are going to need that telephoto lens.

After taking photos again with our DSLR camera , I was reminded of how I initially fell in love with this camera.

The photos you take are so crisp and sharp. I have included the same shot of two lionesses taken with both the iPhone and DSLR camera to show you the difference in what you can achieve. Pretty drastic if you ask me!

Canon DSLR: 2 lionesses chowing down on a giraffe while on a safari drive in South Africa

iPhone: Same shot but using an iPhone instead. You can see the iPhone photo becomes “grainy” with longer distances

We love the Canon Rebel camera, which is at an affordable, entry-level price point.

Canon camera lenses

We brought 3 lenses for our safari trip. As seen from left to right:

  • Wide-angle lens
  • Normal lens
  • Telephoto zooms lens

Chalkley Treehouse: photographed with the Canon Rebel DSLR and wide-angle lens

The photo below (right) shows you how close up you can get (which is not very close!) with an iPhone without looking pixelated.

Telephoto Lens : Turtle hitching a ride on a hippo in Sabi Sand South Africa

iPhone : Turtle riding a hippo in Sabi Sand South Africa

The iPhone is ok at taking videos, but my GoPro definitely surpasses it in video quality. With its stabilization (important for bumpy jeep rides) and wide-angle views, it worked great for our safari drives.

As mentioned earlier, we had the unique opportunity to sleep under the stars in a treehouse at Lion Sands River Lodge in Sabi Sand, South Africa. I took awesome video footage of our treehouse experience with the GoPro.

In addition, I used it to film while hanging over Victoria Falls at Devil’s Pool in Zambia .

Elta MD UV Clear sunscreen

The African sun is no joke.

One of my favorite sunscreens is Elta MD UV Clear . It has zinc oxide that rubs in SHEER on the skin. It’s not oily, so don’t worry about breakouts.

This little skin protector should definitely be on your safari packing list!

Embrava water bottle and Gatorade low sugar packets

You do not want to get dehydrated and faint.

Safari drives are long (usually 3 hours in the morning and afternoon), and you will be sitting under the hot sun.

Bring a water bottle or ask if your safari lodge provides one for the drive. Our lodge, Lion Sands River Lodge, provided every guest with a water bottle for their use during their stay.

The other item I always take on trips is low-sugar Gatorade packets . They are great if you feel dehydrated or had a little too much wine the night before. Just add to water and shake.

I call it my “Hummingbird juice” because if I am feeling a little bit off, it usually perks me back up.

Purell Disinfectant Wipes

Even before the COVID-19 craziness started, we have always carried disinfectant wipes .

Great for plane rides, before and after eating, hiking, or for safari rides when you feel dusty and need to wipe off before you eat an energy bar for a snack. Don’t leave home without them.

My medicine cabinet I bring for trips

I tend to bring my own pharmacy for every trip, so I am prepared for all situations and ailments. The below items are what I personally included on my safari packing list.

But PLEASE CONSULT WITH YOUR DOC OF WHAT YOU SHOULD/SHOULD NOT TAKE.

Traveler’s diarrhea is no joke. Ask your travel clinic for an antibiotic in case it hits you, and you are stuck out in the middle of the African bush.

Also, I haven’t had to use Imodium often, but it comes in very handy if you are in an awkward scenario like sitting on a plane or a jeep for hours on end. Be prepared.

I recently came across a new travel friend called Travelan .

This pill may help PREVENT traveler’s diarrhea. I used it all over a recent trip to Mexico City while doing our own taco tour and never got sick. Pop a pill or two before a meal, and you’re good to go.

Placebo effect? I don’t know. All I can say is I didn’t get sick, and I usually end up puking once anytime we travel to a new country and eat new foods.

Here’s the NIH medical study if you are skeptical.

Unfortunately, I discovered this miracle worker after our trip to Africa. Luckily, I didn’t get sick while we were in South Africa.

There are several choices including Doxycycline, Malarone (Atovaquone-Proguanil), Mefloquine, and Tafenoquine.

Check with the travel clinic to see which one is right for you.

Consider asking your travel clinic for a topical steroid and a low-dose steroid pack if you are like me and get massive reactions to mosquito bites.

I tend to swell up and form huge blisters. It’s great to have these meds on hand if that mosquito happens to find that one inch of skin that is uncovered.

My husband travels internationally frequently and swears by melatonin for jet lag and insomnia.

I never took it until I developed severe insomnia right before our Africa trip. Looking back, I was probably not sleeping because I was worried about our upcoming activities which included swimming in Devil’s Pool on top of the world’s largest waterfall and shark cage diving with great white sharks.

Melatonin was my saving grace not only for my insomnia before this trip but also for jet lag.

Luckily, the safari experience was at the end of our trip, so we had already acclimated to the time zone. But it certainly helped at the beginning of our trip that we started in Victoria Falls.

Also, do not get the “budget” bandaids.

Bandaids are like toilet paper; you’re going to notice if you opt for the cheap stuff.

My LectroFan white noise machine twisted closed

My LectroFan white noise machine twisted open to reveal the Bluetooth speaker

I get it. Most travelers will think this is a weird item to have on an ultimate safari packing list, and some may think this item is a little diva-ish.

That is ok. I am going to tell you why this makes #22 on the list.

The older I get, the more I realize how important a good night’s sleep is. When I was in my 20s, I could pull all-nighters and bounce back the next day. Not anymore.

Need to drown out the street noise from the Airbnb you just rented right next to the highway? What about the noisy neighbor above you in your condo? Or what about trying to muffle the roaring from the lion who has decided to alert everyone he is there?

And this is where my favorite travel product comes into the picture. Weighing only 3.6 ounces, LectroFan  is my best sleeping buddy.

It also has a BlueTooth speaker, which you can sync with your smartphone to play your favorite music.

And, yes I used this amazing machine in our safari lodge! Thanks to the LectroFan, I was able to feel rested when I got that 5 am wake-up call from our safari guide letting us know to get ready for the morning safari!

Freshette Urinary Device

As I started to pack, I began to think how in the world does a female go to the bathroom while out “in the bush?”

When I performed a quick Google search, I found there is a contraption called a f emale uri nary device .

It is a funnel-shaped device that forms a seal so you can urinate without it going down your leg. You can use it camping, at concerts, and even on safari!

I have not used one, but a kind reader highly recommended the Freshette brand and said the hard plastic is better than the flexible device.

I decided I was not going to the bathroom on our safari drive. I accomplished this by hydrating like crazy 1 hour before our safari drive (so I would not get dehydrated). Then I went to the restroom one more time at the lodge before getting on to the jeep.

Then I was nice and comfortable. I still don’t get how females use the restroom in the trees when camping without urinating down their legs. More power to you!

Thank you note cards

Your safari guide and tracker puts in long hours. They get up well before you do and go to bed after you.

They spend 6+ hours with you sharing a wealth of information and finding some of the most amazing wildlife you will ever encounter.

I know the safari lodges cost a small fortune, but consider showing a little love and appreciation by writing a short thank you note  and providing an appropriate tip.

It will be much appreciated by the staff.

Wow, you got through my ultimate safari packing list! Well done. If you are like me, I had no idea before my first African safari what items made sense to bring and what items to leave.

I really hope this detailed article helps you navigate that process. Enjoy this incredible life experience!

Types of Safari Vehicles, Overland Trucks & More: 14 Best Ways to Explore Africa

Posted by Briony Chisholm on September 16 2022 in Adventure Travel in Africa Enquire Now!

So you’re going on a safari to see the open plains and incredible wildlife of Africa? One of the most important details to check, before booking your trip, is what types of African safari vehicles, overlanding trucks, and other forms of transportation are used.

The range of safari vehicles is enormous. From walking safaris with enclosed transfer vehicles to pop-top 4X4 safari vehicles, and from 4-seater to 44-seater overland trucks. You can go bare-bones or air-conditioned high-luxury, local dugout mokoro, horseback, or air safaris for a bird's eye view. The important thing is to choose the type of African safari vehicle or overlanding truck, and other means of exploring (or combination) that suits you, for the ultimate African safari experience.

We’ll start with the biggest African safari vehicles and end with the ‘on foot’ transportation mode.

1. Africa Overlanding Vehicles (Overland Trucks)

African Overland Truck

These expedition trucks are specially built to deal with the rough roads of Africa, where potholes, deep ruts, and river crossings are pretty ‘every day.’ They are normally used for longer and larger (12 to 44 people) overland Africa tours, so need to be able to carry a fair amount of equipment while still offering the budget traveller a relatively comfortable trip and good views of the passing scenery and wildlife.

African tour operators choose the best overland truck for each trip, according to the area being visited and the anticipated terrain that will be covered.

Overland Vehicle Seating Arrangements

Overland trucks may differ in their seating formation and size. Some have all forward-facing seats, while others may have some backward- or side-facing seats. The seats are generally raised, allowing for good views over the African landscapes, especially in grassy areas, where you want to be able to spot animals in the grass. Ask your tour operator about seating formation and how many are seated in a row – some overland trucks seat up to three per row, which makes seeing out a bit more difficult if you’re in the middle – before booking your overland tour.

Luxury overland truck

Windows, Pop-up Roofs, and Taking Photos on Overland Trucks

The overland trucks generally have large windows, some of which open vertically, others horizontally – allowing for good views. Many of them also have a pop-up roof. This allows you to stand up and get 360-degree views and photos.

Luggage Space on Overlanding Trucks

All overland trucks are equipped with storage space (some lockable) for luggage and equipment – some under the seating section, others at the back of the truck, and some with a detachable trailer. Obviously, space is at a premium, so be sure to pack only the absolute essentials. Also, when packing, use soft luggage rather than hard (e.g. Samsonite), as it is much easier to fit into lockers and overhead compartments.

Most overland trucks have a safe onboard for the storage of valuables.

Mobile Kitchen & Diner

Many meals while on safari are prepared and eaten out in the bush, far from civilization. The overland trucks are fully equipped for this. Most safari trucks have a ‘kitchen’ section (often fold-out, beneath the seating area) with a stove and hand dish-washing area. They also have a fridge/freezer/cooler boxes to keep supplies and drinks fresh in the African heat. Africa Overland Tours are thirsty work!

Safety First on Safari!

Safety is non-negotiable. Check with your tour operator that there is a fully-stocked First Aid kit onboard, safety belts on all seats, and some means of communication (radio, etc.), in case of emergencies while on safari. All legitimate tour operators have their client’s safety first in mind and ensure that their overland trucks are kept in a good condition and are reliable for long trips – larger fuel and water tanks, spare tyres, knowledgeable and well-trained drivers, etc.

Overland Truck Gadgets

Modern overlanding trucks come fully equipped with the modern gadgets that we've all got used to. With iPod/MP3 points, you can listen to your own soundtrack as you watch the African landscape slide by. They also have onboard charging facilities so ensure that your camera remains fully charged and you don't lose that once-in-a-lifetime shot of a lion hunting his prey!

Luxury safari truck for small group overland tours

Some smaller tours use smaller overland trucks – seven to nine-seaters – which provide window seats only, so nobody has to be in a middle seat.

Luxury Overlanding Trucks

These are state-of-the-art 4x4 overland vehicles used on small-group overland tours. A custom-built luxury overland truck comfortably accommodates up to 12 guests. They are specially designed to provide extra space and amenities. This is the overland vehicle of choice for a more luxurious overlanding Africa experience with all the adventure in added style and comfort.

Features include an onboard toilet and a water filtration system for purified drinking water on the road. The luxury overland trucks have reclining leather seats that rotate 180 degrees and lock into your preferred position (for example, window or front-facing).

Luxury safari truck for overlanding Africa

Each seat has overhead air-conditioning vents that can be independently operated for individual control of airflow and temperature. Every seat also features a USB port panel for charging your electronic devices and there is a reading light above each seat. Each seat has a safety deposit unit with individual key code access, for storing your passports, phones, and smaller valuables.

2. Minibus or Microbus Safari Vehicles

For smaller safari groups and shorter tours that don’t go through hugely rugged areas, adapted microbuses (or minibuses) are used. As safari vehicles, Toyota Quantums and Mercedes Sprinters are most commonly used. The optimal number in most of these safari vehicles is six to ten people, forward-facing.

Sprinter safari minibus

When booking a safari, find out from the tour operator which safari vehicle is used, and how many window seats there are, to ensure that everybody gets a window seat and has a good view of the spectacular scenery and amazing animals of Africa.

These safari microbuses are specially adapted for safari travel and are generally equipped with GPS tracking, sliding windows, cooler boxes, fire extinguishers, and First Aid kits. They generally have a softer suspension than other safari vehicles, giving a slightly more comfortable trip. Many of them – especially on  Kenya Safaris – also feature pop-up tops, allowing travellers to stand and view/photograph the countryside and animals from the minibus.

Some minibuses are fitted with air-conditioning. This is a welcome relief from the sweltering African heat but may detract from the whole experience of Africa, as the windows will be closed, blocking out the sounds of the bush.

3. Land Cruising Safari Vehicles

Pop-top 4x4 safari vehicle

Land Cruisers and Land Rovers are used on many safari tours. They range from ‘bare-bones’ models i.e. no added ‘mod-cons’, to highly specialized vehicles that may include air-conditioning, MP3 players, and slightly tinted windows for protection from the sun. Some of the newer safari vehicle models also have pop-up roofs, for added viewing potential, especially in Tanzania.

Safari Vehicle Seating Arrangements

These safari vehicles, in general, can carry four to six (extended version) passengers, all forward-facing. Check the seating configuration with your tour operator before booking. While extended safari vehicles can carry more people, they tend to be slightly more difficult to handle on the road. Most of the Land Cruisers are 4X4s, allowing travel over the rough terrain that Africa is known for… Have a look at images of the road into the Ngorongoro Crater if you want an idea!

While self-hire safari vehicle options are available, tour operators all have experienced drivers who, more often than not have extensive knowledge not only of handling the rough terrain but of the areas through which we travel.

Safety First on Safaris!

Most Land Cruisers are equipped with all possible safety features – fire extinguishers, First Aid kits, seat belts and many have airbags. They have specially designed fuel tanks to allow the economical use of diesel during long journeys and snorkels for travel through rivers.

Luggage Space & How to Pack (light)

In general, luggage is taken either in a trailer or packed on the roof, to keep the safari vehicle as uncluttered as possible inside, for your comfort. Remember to pack lightly!

4. Open Game-Viewing Safari Vehicles

Open African safari vehicle on game drive

Within many of the game parks, smaller, open-sided, or completely open safari vehicles are used for game drives. While these are not suitable for long distances – wind, dust, sun, and Africa’s elements can be harsh! – they are great for game drives as they allow you to get up close and personal with the sights, sounds, and smells of the African bush.

These safari vehicles are most often adapted Land Cruisers which seat between six and nine passengers. Some are designed with tiered seating so that nobody’s view is blocked by the person in front of them’s head!

Open African safari vehicle

Protection from The Elements

Due to their being open to the elements, it is vital to protect yourself against the African sun. Hats, scarves, and windbreakers are all excellent shields from fiery hot UV rays. Many of these open safari vehicles do have canvas/plastic canopies that can be closed if the weather becomes uncooperative. Thunderstorms in Africa can be wild, and come on within minutes!

Safari Drivers & Trackers

Most often when going on game drives, there will be a driver and a tracker (often sits on the front of the car, allowing him to track spoor and dung.) The trackers are highly experienced, and allow one to see the best Africa has to offer in wildlife.

5. Bird’s-Eye View Flying Safaris

Plane view of the Okavango Delta

‘Air safaris’ are offered at various places in Africa, like Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta . A flight over the delta in a small plane gives you an idea of the vastness of the area. A helicopter flight over Victoria Falls will make you feel like an eagle soaring above this spectacular area!

Helicopters on Safari

The ‘vehicles’ used differ from operator to operator. The helicopters used at Victoria Falls are generally 4- or 6-seaters and many have bubble windows, allowing for good viewing. Do remember that, in the 6-seater, you may land up in the middle seat, making seeing out slightly more difficult.

Light Planes on Safari

In the Okavango Delta, many of the lodges are only reachable by air, especially during the wet season. Many small plane charters are available both as a means to get to the lodges and for a birds-eye view of the delta and spectacular photographic opportunities – a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

6. Hot Air Balloon Rides

Hot air ballooning over Serengeti Park

What could be better than watching the sun rise over the Serengeti  while floating gently above its vast plains in a hot air balloon? Nothing, really. Hot air balloon rides are offered at various places in Africa (like Masai Mara and Serengeti) and provide an incredible, thrilling, bird’s-eye view of the vastness of Africa, dotted with wildlife.

7. Boat to the Great White Sharks

Shark diving safari

The boat used for our Great White Shark Cage Diving trips in South Africa is a custom-built catamaran. Combining comfort, stability, speed, and safety, this boat ensures not only a good trip for you but also promises minimal interference in the shark’s natural habitat.

The custom-built shark cage diving boat is typically a 46-foot (14m) long catamaran with a spacious upper deck for surface views of the sharks and other marine animals and platforms for the bait and decoy handlers to ensure the best possible shark viewing. It is a lightweight aluminium vessel powered by four big four-stroke 300-hp outboard engines and is equipped with the most advanced electronic navigation equipment.

Great white shark cage diving boat

Staying dry and comfortable

Featuring a spacious indoor cabin, as well as separate wet and dry outdoor decks, the design ensures that when you’re wet, you’re wet, but once you’re out and want to be dry and comfortable, you can be. The boat usually features a central dining area, storage facilities for personal items, and both male and female toilets.

Electronically, the boat is fully equipped with a tracking device, radios, GPS, radar and navigation equipment, depth finder and echo sounder, and even a 12V charging facility for cameras, cell phones, and laptops.

Safety - yours and the shark's

Safety is of utmost importance and there are life vests for all passengers, fire extinguishers, a life raft, and capsize bottles on the boat. In case of medical emergencies, there are two onboard First Aid kits, oxygen cylinders, and fluid replacement.

Not only is your safety cared for, but that of the sharks too. The cage has no sharp points or edges that could hurt the animals. The cage itself is specially constructed of reinforced steel and can take five people comfortably. It is lowered and winched back up using a winch from a sturdy gantry. Oxygen is supplied from the boat to divers via a ‘hookah’ system with hoses running into the cage.

This, too, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There’s not much more exhilarating than coming face-to-face with a Great White in its own habitat!

8. Rubber-Ducking the Gorges

Rafting the Zambezi on safari

Jinja, in Uganda - where the longest river in Africa, The Nile, begins at its source, Lake Victoria - is one of the top whitewater rafting destinations in the world. Add in Victoria Falls, the Fish River Canyon, and the Orange (Gariep) River, where various boat options are offered, from boogie-boarding the rapids through canoeing to rubber ducking both flat water and white water, and it's an adrenaline junkie's dream. Your trip choice depends completely on your adrenaline requirements/limits!

Whichever you choose, be sure to check that the tour operator follows all safety regulations, ensuring that you have a safe, enjoyable trip through the gorge. Life jackets and helmets are non-negotiable, these waters can get wild, and a knowledgeable, trained guide will ensure you get the most out of your trip.

9. East African Dhows (sailing boats)

East African Dhow sailing boat

There is nothing quite so beautiful as seeing a traditional dhow gliding through the warm, azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Originally used for trading, these long, narrow boats with triangular sails, expertly sailed by locals, are used along the east coast of Africa.

So whether you’re heading off to the Bazaruto Archipelago or exploring the coastline of Zanzibar , do yourself a favour and catch a ride on one of these graceful sailing vessels.

10. Game Viewing Boat Cruises

One of the best ways to watch wildlife and birds on safari in Africa is without a doubt by boat. It's hard to compete with a laid-back sunset cruise. Exceptional wildlife and bird sightings along the rivers and estuaries in top game reserves of Africa. Stunning scenery. Chilled sundowners and snacks or dinner onboard. Easy-paced, yet exciting and novel.

The boats used on boat cruises vary but they are typically open-sided motorboats. The larger boats offer standing and sitting room and are sometimes double-deckers.

Chobe boat cruise in Botswana

Chobe National Park in Botswana is one of the best places for boat-based game viewing in Africa. Another favourite spot for scenic boat cruises is the Zambezi River near Victoria Falls. There are plenty of other great destinations for game-viewing boat cruises, from Uganda to South Africa.

Recommended Safaris with Game-Viewing Boat Cruises

  • Botswana:  5-Day Chobe & Okavango Delta Lodge Tour  or  Botswana Exclusive Camping Safari to Chobe & Okavango  - include Chobe River boat cruises (as with most Chobe Safaris)
  • Uganda:  Gorilla Trekking & Queen Elizabeth Park Safari  - includes boat cruises on Kazinga Channel (Queen Elizabeth Park) & in Murchison Falls National Park

11. Winding Through the Waterways in Mekoro

Mokoro in Okavango Delta, Botswana

If your safari includes a trip into the Okavango Delta , you will more-than-likely experience the gentle pleasure of a trip in a mokoro canoe. Check with your tour operator that this is included as part of the package, or offered as an optional activity. You don’t want to miss out on this opportunity to get up close and personal with the prolific birds and wildlife – including elephants, hippos, and crocs – of the Okavango Delta.

Mokoro History

These traditional dug-out canoes are made of wood and guided by a ‘poler’, who stands at the helm. While originally made from indigenous trees, such as the Kingella or ‘Sausage Tree’, they are increasingly made of fibreglass these days. While not as ‘authentic’, this is preserving the indigenous trees of the area and provides just-as-good a means of transport through the spectacular waterways of the delta.

Experienced polers

Many people are afraid of hippos overturning a mokoro. While this is not an impossibility – this is Africa, after all, and you’re in their habitat – the polers are experienced in the area and are very aware that hippos are territorial creatures. They are sure to avoid dangerous situations.

A trip on a mokoro allows you to get as close to the sights and sounds of Africa as is physically possible. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

12. Kayak & Canoe Safaris

If you're a kayaking or canoeing enthusiast this is the ultimate game-viewing safari vehicle for you. Watch the wilderness glide by as you paddle quietly along the rivers and waterways of Africa. A canoeing or kayaking safari gives you more independence than a mokoro trip where a guide poles you along.

The canoes and kayaks used on safaris vary widely, ranging from inflatable canoes to rugged old-school kayaks.

Zambezi canoeing in Zambia

Some canoe safaris offer game viewing opportunities along the riverbanks and even in the waters whilst most are more about taking in the wild scenery and spotting birds.

Recommended safaris with canoe or kayak trips

  • 16-Day Zambia & Malawi Small Group Safari  or 4-Day Victoria Falls Tour in Zambia - include Zambezi River Canoe Trips

4-Day South Africa Garden Route Tour - includes Canoeing in Wilderness National Park

15-Day Zambia & Malawi Small Group Budget Safari  - includes kayaking on Lake Malawi

13. Explore the African Bush on Horseback or Camelback

An incredible way to experience the bush up close! Horseback safaris are allowed in certain game reserves so if you want to experience the bush on horseback you'll need to pick your destinations accordingly. Two of the most popular African safari destinations that offer horseback safaris are Victoria Falls (Zambia or Zimbabwe) and Big 5 game reserves near Cape Town in South Africa.

Horseback safaris Cape Town

For a whole new experience, you can explore Africa by camel. An entirely unique and exotic mode of transport indeed. Camelback safaris are far rarer than horseback safaris. You can only embark on a camelback adventure in a few places, including parts of East Africa.

Recommended trips with optional horseback safaris & camelback safaris

  • Experience Southern Africa Exclusive Budget Safari  &  Zimbabwe & Botswana Safari (Lodge Tour)  - optional horseback safaris at Victoria Falls

3 Day Big 5 Cape Town Safari  & 2 Day Big 5 Cape Town Safari  - optional horseback safaris at Aquila Game Reserve

14. Walking Safaris in Africa

Walking safaris in Africa

This is (obviously) only an option once you are in the game reserve. Depending on the safety i.e. the presence of dangerous predators, many game reserves offer guided walking tours. This is the ideal way to get a true, African, wildlife experience. By walking through the bush all your senses experience Africa – sight, smell, sounds, touch – unadulterated by the sound of motors and really off the beaten track.

Guides and trackers

Most reserves have highly experienced guides who are a fountain of knowledge regarding the fauna and flora of the area and are excellent trackers. This allows you to not only experience the bush but also learn all sorts of fascinating facts while seeing the birds, insects, and animals that call Africa ‘home.’

Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.

8 days: Best of Zambia, Botswana (Chobe) and Zimbabwe (Hwange) Wildlife Safari Tour Tour

8 days: Best of Zambia, Botswana (Chobe) and Zimbabwe (Hwange) Wildlife Safari Tour

The trip delivers what the title promises. The best of three countries in one package. Mark and his team took great care of their guests at all times and, together with their local partners, ensured a smooth vacation. In particular, the rhino safari in Zambia and the Chobe National Park in Botswana are a fantastic experience. Just like being able to see the Victoria Falls from both sides. The logistics of the numerous border crossings are fully supported and can therefore be completed without any worries (with appropriate preparation, depending on nationality). In my opinion, there is only room for improvement in the accommodation in Zimbabwe. The chosen lodge is in a solid condition, but the rooms (sanitary facilities, no air conditioning) show the passing decades. The food, on the other hand, is excellent and sumptuous! Despite the small drawback, an absolutely recommendable trip to experience the highlights of the three countries!

The Absolute Safari

Amazing! My husband and I just returned from the 73 day Absolute Safari. The tour was incredible! 1. The itinerary is fantastic. Each day is unique fascinating, and memorable. 2. The trip is very organized. The tour is very packed and diverse. Absolute Africa takes care of the details and any complex arrangements so we were able to just enjoy. The 73 days goes by quickly. Wished the tour was longer! 3. The tour is defined as a budget tour. Didn't feel like it. The meals are extensive, the tents and mats are sturdy (with lodging often available when you want to upgrade), the excursions are very well managed, and the Absolute Africa head office and field crew are very professional and respond quickly. Of course this isn't a luxury tour. There are glitches that can occur during the tour, but Absolute Africa is "on it" and addresses it as quickly as possible. 4. Our field tour crew, Peter and Steve, are outstanding. Peter's passion and knowledge about Africa, including the animals, history, government, politics, and geography, will enrich your African tour and experience. Peter is also an excellent cook. Steve is keenly aware of his surroundings and knows the roads of Africa like a human GPS. Both Peter and Steve's priority is to ensure the passengers have an excellent, fun, safe time on their vacation. Overall, My husband and I cannot imagine a better tour, nor a better way, to explore Africa. Highly recommend the Absolute Safari tour. Especially sign up for the tour when Peter P. and Steve N. are the field crew for an experience that will be amazing, fun, safe, and will enhance your understanding about a complex and beautiful continent.

12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated) Tour

12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)

The tour was amazing travelling from South Africa, Zimbabwe and through to Botswana ,saw some incredible natural wonders such as Vic Falls, national parks and being taken through the Delta river by small canoes. A real slice of heaven. I especially love the camp in the Delta where their had erected a manual shower and a loo our the back of the tent, so when looking up at night you could see the stars, the moon and where surrounded by natural wonders. Hearing the sounds of the night , little reed frogs and the sounds of hippos talking to one another was amazing. Wish the tour was longer and that we could have stayed a little longer in each place to really soak up the vibe of the towns that we visited. Nice small group to travel with 6-7 people and accommodation was far beyond my expectations.

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days

Amazing adventure! We saw all the animals that only was possible to see! Almost everyone was close as in his Palm. Guide Abu was a sensitive, attentive and told iteres facts about animals. It was as much as possible in time. We flew by ourselves from Zanzibar to Arushi a day before the Safari began. We were settled in a lovely room, anticipating taking from the airport. Also back, our departure was the next morning after Safari. Thank Aboh again, our companions from the Netherlands and Australia and all organizers of this wonderful adventure! 10 Days Uganda's Gorillas Encounter, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour ( Private tour)

It was a breathtaking trip. We enjoyed every moment. We slept in the most beautiful locations. The gorilla walk was very heavy but it was more than worth it (recommended!!!). We have had the time of our lives. The elderly enjoyed it just as much as the people in their twenties. It is a wonderful journey for everyone. This organization is professional and definitely recommended for your trip to Uganda and Rwanda. We enjoyed our vacation very hard and and we would like to thank Mukisa Safaris Uganda for this.

African Safari Tour Reviews

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.
Everything was Amazing
We enjoyed the experience. The only negative place was the lodge in Hwange, totally substandard, we were supposed to be there 2 nights but moved out after the first night. Must mention Mark, Fines, Peace and the other 2 guides that went over and above their duties to satisfy our needs.

Safari Travel Planner

Go cage diving and get an eye-to-eye encounter with a great white shark that’s guaranteed to get your adrenalin pumping. Come face to face with a great white shark in Shark Alley near the fishing village of Gansbaai, about two hours out of Cape Town. A face-to-face encounter with these awesome animals is guaranteed to be an experience you’ll remember and talk about forever.

You’ll board the boat in Gansbaai and head out to Dyer Island where the boat will anchor in the channel. You’ll make use of a securely designed six-man steel cage that floats on the surface, with divers no more than a metre below the surface.

Experienced divers can dive on scuba while inexperienced divers can enjoy the same experience with a snorkel. Snorkeling is equally comfortable and safe. Using 5mm diving wetsuits, hoodies, booties and masks, you’ll enter the cage and get up close and personal with these sharks, which can be as big as 2.5 to 6 metres.

Safari Travel Trends 2024: Sustainability and Increased Travel Budgets

G lobal interest in safaris more than doubled over the course of 2023 with the bulk of travelers especially interested in exploring South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania.

At the same time, the average amount of money consumers are willing to spend for safari travel has increased by a significant 25 percent.

Those are just a few of the top takeaways from Go2Africa’s annual State of Safaris report. Developed based on Go2Africa’s own proprietary search and booking data, as well as global Google search volumes, the report identifies a number of pivotal trends that are poised to shape the safari industry across Africa.

In addition to the growth in safari travel in general, the report reveals:

  • Interest in sustainable safari travel continues to grow, experiencing a more than 1,000 percent increase over the last four years.
  • Travelers are increasingly interested in beach/safari combos and intergenerational travel
  • The average safari budget now ranges between $5,500 to $6,500
  • About 12 percent of solo travelers would consider going on a safari, with couples being the biggest demographic at 47 percent.

Here’s a closer look at some of the most significant developments.

Interest in African Safaris Has More Than Doubled

As the world emerged from the pandemic and travel restrictions eased, interest in safari travel grew exponentially.

With 2023 being the first year that there were very few travel restrictions remaining at all, Google searches for African safaris more than doubled during Q1 increasing by 111 percent over the same time period one year earlier.

The Average Safari Budget Increased by 25%

About 70 percent of visitors from Australia, the US, and Canada now have what Go2Africa calls “medium to high budgets” for safaris. That’s a significant rise from 43 percent of travelers who had such substantial sums of money set aside for a safari vacation the previous year.

About 25 percent of travelers from South Africa, Europe, and the UK meanwhile, set aside a medium to high budget for a safari vacation, compared to just 18 percent in 2022.

Ranked by spending on safaris, travelers from Italy are at the top of the heap, splashing the most cash on such vacations. Rounding out the top five in order of spending is Belgium, Mexico, the United States, and Philippines.

12 percent of Solo Travelers Would Consider Going on a Safari

The demographics of safari travelers apparently don’t change much from one year to the next, according to Go2Africa. In 2023, the vast majority of people taking safaris were individuals traveling with their partner, a group that made up 47 percent of arrivals to the continent. That figure is notable however, because it’s a decline from 2022, when couples made up 60 percent of all travelers to Africa.

Families, meanwhile, account for the second largest group of safari travelers at 32.3 percent of arrivals in Africa, followed by solo travelers at 12 percent and groups of friends at 11 percent. (Side note: groups of friends visiting Africa tend to choose Congo for their adventure, says Go2Africa).

The central African nation also attracts the highest percentage of solo travelers among African countries, making it an enticing destination for those looking for solo travel-friendly explorations.

Sustainability Continues to Be a Customer Priority

The Go2Africa also reveals that travelers want a “more authentic and sustainable experiences on their trip.”

“Sustainability is the word on everyone’s lips, but research suggests that it’s more than just a fad,” says the report.

Interest in sustainable safaris has been steadily growing over the years increasing by 6.4 percent from 2022 to 2023.

However, when looking at the wider picture, sustainable safaris have seen more than a 1,000% increase in interest over the last four years.

“Right now, we have a few travelers who have specifically asked if they can volunteer for a day on their safari, so we’re definitely seeing an increase in our guests’ interest in sustainability and connection with the local communities,” Liesel Van Zyl, head of positive impact at Go2Africa, said in a statement. “Our clients look for experiences that foster authentic community engagement during their trip to Africa.”

Beach Safaris

And one last notable trend: safaris combined with beach getaways are now a popular request. This typically includes travelers spending half of the week taking in the animals throughout Africa and half the week relaxing and swimming at a coastal destination.

This emerging demand has resulted in some new countries becoming hotspots that were not always popular including Malawi and Seychelles, says the report.

Interest in travel to Zambia and Malawi increased by 78 percent and 41 percent respectively between 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, Seychelles experienced a notable increase in visitors, credited to a 20 percent rise in bush and beach combinations compared to the previous year.

“Zambia and Malawi combination safaris are very popular at the moment,” Van Zyl said in a statement. “Zambia offers some great value with more untouched, uncrowded parks to explore compared to some of the more hectic areas in Southern Africa. It’s also a quick one-hour hop and a skip to Malawi for incredible beach and freshwater snorkeling, kayaking and African sundowners.”
