7 Tourist Spots for Your SAN REMIGIO, ANTIQUE ITINERARY

Antique is a province in the Panay Island. It is most famous for being the birthplace of an unusual spa experience called “Kawa Bath”. It is where you get inside a large iron vat – formerly used for cooking sugar – filled with water (or milk and even beer) and placed over an open fire. Sort of like you’re being boiled alive. But it’s perfectly safe, don’t worry.

At any rate, besides this novel way of relaxing, Antique has a lot more to offer. In the town of San Remigio for example, one of the few landlocked municipalities of the province, there are many attractions and activities one can do. The mountainous terrain would already be a clue to the delightful treasures this town has in store.

To get to San Remigio from the San Jose Airport, one must take a jeepney or van to the town of Sibalom. Once here, get on another jeep to San Remigio. Philippine Airlines has flights every Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays to the San Jose Airport in Antique via Clark.

Because San Remigio is perched on a higher elevation than the rest of Antique, the town enjoys much cooler weather. Even in summer, the weather here is pleasantly not sweltering. You get to move around without getting your shirt stuck to your body with sweat. It’s especially cozy come evening – perfect cuddle weather. Plus, come dawn, fog rolls in for that classic dramatic feels!

Go Strawberry-picking

Baguio and La Trinidad are not the only places you can pick some strawberries. In the village of Aningalan, there are plenty of strawberry farms. The cold climes and fertile lands of San Remigio make it ideal for growing vegetables and fruits and even weather-sensitive kinds like strawberries. Strawberry season is usually from November through February. Aningalan Highlands Strawberry Garden is one place you can try this activity.

Ride a Balsa Across Danao Lake

Aside from the mountain vistas, San Remigio also plays host to a crystalline lake. Danao Lake is a 3-hectare lake that is home to a number of freshwater fish. Birds also frequent this site, so avid and amateur birdwatchers would enjoy a visit here. One may also board a bamboo raft and glide around the clear and still waters of the lake. There are also several huts perfect for lakeside picnics or just relaxing. Best time to visit the lake is probably in the morning or just before dusk when the light is less harsh.

Explore Igbaclag Cave

For something more adrenaline-pumping and sweat-inducing, a trip to Igbaclag Cave is a nice addition to your San Remigio itinerary. A cluster of limestone, Igbaclag stands in the middle of a lush forest. The karst formation is more a tunnel than a cavern and there is a path that would lead you to the top. This path is a bit challenging because of the sharp rocks. It requires a bit of upper body strength as you need to hoist yourself up. But once you emerge and see the canopies of the rich forest below, it will all definitely be worth it. Make sure to wear proper attire and footwear so you’d fully enjoy the experience.

Bring Home Organic Produce

When in San Remigio, the best souvenir would be the variety of fresh and organic produce. If you come during the off-season when strawberries are not available, you can choose from the slew of other crops on sale: cucumbers, tomatoes, taro, banana, onions, eggplants, lettuce, and many other. The price of produce here is also relatively cheaper than in Manila, so if you want more greens in your diet, better take advantage of this when you visit San Remigio.

Where To Stay in San Remigio

San Remigio is one of the more offbeat destinations in Antique. There are only a handful of choices for accommodations. Most of which is located in the village of Aningalan. This is actually good because most of the tourist spots are within or near this area. Aningalan Highlands Strawberry Garden offers a bungalow-type accommodation with three rooms. They have solo-traveler and group rates so it’ll still be a budget-friendly choice.

The capital town, San Jose de Buenavista, is just about an hour drive from San Remigio. Compared to the other towns, it is the most developed with malls, fast food chains, banks, and other business establishments like hotels and inns. If you are going further north to experience Kawa Bath in Tibiao and the Malumpati Cold Spring in Pandan, the best place to stay is in Pandan. San Remigio is a municipality in Cebu Province , on the northwest side of Cebu Island. It has the longest coastline on the island and is an entry point to Bantayan Island via its Hagnaya Port.

San Remigio has the longest coastline on Cebu Island. As a result, the town is relatively sprawled out along the coast. The town center (Poblacion) is the main commercial center while the barangay of Tambongon hosts a secondary business district for the southern part of the municipality.

By bus [ edit ].

Intercity buses arrive from and depart to North Bus Terminal in Mandaue , Metro Cebu , about 100 km away. The trip takes 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. There are three bus terminals in San Remigio. The municipal hall stop serves the town center, while a terminus station located in the barangay of Bugoson serves the southern part of the municipality and the Hagnaya Port terminus serves the barangay of Hagnaya and Bantayan Island. Fares start at ₱110.

San Remigio is easily accessible from Metro Cebu by road via the Central National Highway/Cebu North Hagnaya Wharf Road (signed as Highway 810) which leads directly into the town center and northwards to Hagnaya Port.

By jeepney [ edit ]

Jeepneys connect San Remigio with Bogo and Tabuelan.

By boat [ edit ]

Two ferry companies connect Hagnaya Port with the port of Santa Fe in Bantayan , Super Shuttle Ferry and Island Shipping Express. Ferries leave and arrive hourly between 3AM and 6PM. As of 2017, the fare is ₱170 for regular trips and ₱185 for air-conditioned trips.

San Remigio is a 3rd municipal income class in the northern part of the Province of Cebu. Way back in the 1850s, San Remigio used to be one of the barrios of Bogo City. It was called “Kanghagas” then, after the kanghagas trees which abundantly grew there.

San Remigio, as an independent town, was officially founded in November 21, 1863. In 1864, a church was built and St. Juan Nepomuceno was assigned the town's patron saint.

San Remigio is has the longest shoreline in Cebu province. They developed marine sanctuaries there and it currently one of the most popular diving destinations.

Here are some of the things you should experience in San Remigio.

Lapyahan Festival

San Remigio celebrates the Lapyahan Festival every year. “Lapyahan” translates to sea shore or shoreline. It is held every May 16th (mark your calendars!) They portray storylines and offer dance presentations especially for St. San Juan Nepomuceno. Of course, you should watch the street dancing which has themes that relate to the sea, waves, swimming, and seashells.

FYI, most residents of San Remigio earn money from fishing, which is why the sea is at the center of their celebration.

San Juan Nepomuceno Church is located in Brgy. Poblacion, San Remigio. It was built in April 12, 1864 and the first parish priest there was Rev. Fr. Ceferino Montecillo. They have 3 existing bells in their bell tower: the 1866 bell, the San Remigio 1873 bell and the Custodia Mandal de Demiar 1953.

San Remigio is a 3rd income class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 57,557. From the 2016 roll, it had 37,122 voters that are registered. San Remigio celebrates its annual fiestas on 15 and 16 May in honor of the patron saints, San Isidro Labrador and San Juan Nepomuceno. The parish had had their 150th anniversary because it has been set up in the year 1864. San Remigio was previously known as "Kanghagas," a sort of tree that grew there in abundance. When the Spanish conquistadores arrived, they identified a town site by clearing the trees that were kanghagas through self-help labor. Kanghagas was part of Barangay Punta. Originally the visita of Kanghagas was within the jurisdiction of Bantayan. In 1850 Bogo established a parish, and the three barrios of Kanghagas, Lambusan, and Victoria (Maarat) became under the civil governance of Bogo. Kangahagas was renamed Isabel following Spain's queen. In 1864 these Barrios set a new parish named as San Juan Nepomuceno Parish (Redondo 1886, p. 165) and a new town was called San Remigio.
