Silver Cross Surf Special Edition Eton Grey review

Silver Cross Surf Special Edition Eton Grey

What they say:

“Stylish and contemporary, Surf features a unique air sprung suspension for outstanding multi-terrain performance. Ideal from birth, Surf includes a carrycot, which can be used as a lie-flat pram or for overnight sleeping, and a seat unit which transforms your Surf into a parent or forward-facing pushchair. It can also be combined with the Simplicity car seat to create a full travel system.

“The Special Edition Eton Grey draws its inspiration from British tailoring, with luxurious brushed grey fabrics and a stylish gloss black chassis. It comes with a beautiful faux fur seat liner and luxury tote bag.”

Tested by mum Samantha Holliday for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend the Silver Cross Surf to other mums?

I love the design of this pram, the black frame looks really sleek & the limited edition covers are excellent quality. When folded down (which is a palaver, see below!) it becomes really compact & would fit in the smallest of boots. If you're using the bassinet then that folds flat with a couple of clicks so ideal for storing.

How did this product make your life easier?

This pram comes with everything you need to get you from newborn to toddler. The change bag is really spacious and matches the pram perfectly. The bassinet can be used over night so that makes it ideal for having a night or two away and not having to pack a Moses basket. I like that the foot muff & hood can be used on wither the seat or the bassinet and the zip attachment is great for a quick change

What changes would you make to this product?

The fold mechanism. The fold requires too many steps, with a toddler and bad weather I think I would end up in tears in M&S car park wanting to donate the pram to the nearest passerby! It's so frustrating that you have to lock the wheels, remove the seat, lower the handle before you can even start the collapsing process of lifting the handle, putting your foot on the button and then changing the angle of the shopping basket. The thought of doing all that on a wet, miserable day is what has put me off this travel system.

Tested by mum Jo Simpson for the M&B Awards 2017:

There is no doubt that the quality of this product is very much reflected in the price tag. The look and quality of the product is second to none with its sheepskin liner and beautiful texture of fabrics and the whole appearance is very eye catching and you certain getting some envious looks when out and about with it. The manoeuvrability and comfort of use are outstanding.

The beautiful and stunning changing bag that comes with this pushchair is lovely and has the appearance more of a designer handbag than a regular changing bag. The shopping basket which is incorporated in the frame is a good size and very practical. The straps are easy to fit and you can also easily detach the shoulder straps for easy access to little one.

Would you choose this product to win?

I feel the big down point for this pushchair is its foldability. If there is an award for causing the most pushchair envy then this one would definitely be a winner as it certainly gained a lot of attention when we were out and about.

The one thing that I would change about this pushchair is it foldability as it simply takes up too much room. The chassis collapses brilliantly although it does take some getting use to. The problem is that the seat unit has to be detached from the frame and it simply doesn't fit into the frame at all when collapsed, I have a big SUV and it takes up my whole boot.

Tested by mum Abigail Doran for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

The Silver Cross Surf looks amazing. The limited addition covers are superb quality and look really stylish. This pram folds down to a very compact size and would fit into virtually any boot. If using the bassinet when the baby is really small, this folds with ease so it’s ideal for transport and storage. This being said, getting the pram folded is another story...

This pram comes equipped with everything you will ever need in regards to a pram and what you need when you're out with baby. The included change bag is very large and has enough room for everything and it also is a perfect match for the pram. The bassinet is approved for over night use which is handy for being away. The foot muff can be used ro both the seat and the bassinet and the zip attachment is a good quality for a quick and easy change over.

I was SO excited to test this pram as Silver Cross has a place on my heart right from when I was a baby. However, I was so disappointed by the fact that it is so difficult to use. The folding just required far too many steps until it is actually folded. This, along with challenging weather, a baby, a toddler and then all the shopping would send me insane and ditching the pram there and then. i cannot stress how disappointed I was at this. Efficiency is a must.

The fold! It was so frustrating (probably because I had such high expectations). You need to lock the wheels, remove the wheels and lower the handle before you can even start the fold or lifting the handle, pressing the button with your foot and then changing the angle of the shopping basket before proceeding to collapse the pram. Honestly, even the thought is giving me palpitations!!

Moscow Metro

Moscow Metro

Opened in 1935 under Stalin, the Moscow Metro is one of the largest networks in the world and a tourist attraction in itself. Discover how to get around on it!

Designed to be " palaces of the people ", the different stations of Moscow's metro are spectacular examples of Socialist Realist art and architecture. Aside from providing fascinating insight into the city's history, the metro network is also an  efficient and economical way to get around the Russian capital .

Operating times & frequency

The Metro Moscow operates daily between  5:30 am and 1 am , with trains departing every 1 to 3 minutes during peak times. Outside of rush hour, trains are less frequent, every 4 to 7 minutes depending on the line and the time of day.

Ticket prices

The price of a single ticket for the Moscow Metro is 55 Roubles . Single tickets allow you to change trains as many times as you like, with no limit on distance or time. To buy tickets, you may struggle to find English speaking staff, however you should be to communicate the number of tickets you need by holding up your fingers, and thankfully most stations now have simple automated machines that you can use too.

There are often long queues to buy tickets, so if you're planning to travel by metro a lot, we recommend buying multi-ride tickets to save time and money. You'll get a paper card which you tap on the reader to go through the turnstile.

You can buy a daily ticket for ₽ 230 ( US$ 2.50) or a 3-day ticket for ₽ 438 ( US$ 4.70).

Metro lines

Moscow Metro has 17 lines  with a total length of 246 miles (397 km) divided into more than  230 stations  (265 if we include the Moscow Central Circle). Each line is identified by a name, a number and a colour.

Guided tour of the Moscow Metro

Moscow's metro network is a museum in itself, and it's a must-see attraction on any trip to the Russian capital. The long marble corridors, fascinating Soviet-themed frescoes and gilded sculptures are truly captivating. To make the most of your visit and learn all about the symbolism and history behind some of the city's main metro stations, why not explore the network with an expert English-speaking guide? Take a look at our Guided Tour of the Moscow Metro to find out more!

A curious detail about the Moscow metro lies in the announcements on the trains. Unless you speak Russian, you probably won't understand the content of the voiceovers, however, you may note something interesting: trains heading into the city have male voiced announcements, and trains heading out of the city have female voiced announcements!

Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 pushchair review

Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 pushchair outdoors and in a studio

  • Sarah Bradbury

In a nutshell

A light, stylish, urban pushchair with a high-end classic finish that is a joy to push and gives you great bang for your buck

What we tested

  • Stylish design with high-end finish, easy to push and steer with a super smooth ride, carrycot can be used overnight sleeping, can fold with seat attached
  • Bulky fold, access to the shopping basket frustratingly tight, sometimes gets stuck on kerbs

silver cross wayfarer front

The Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 is the latest model of the classic British brand’s popular mid-range city pushchair, first introduced in the 70s.

With an RRP of £695, it is a fair bit cheaper than other Silver Cross models, such as the Wave 2020 (£995 on Amazon ) and Pioneer (£795), and is just a small step up from the more nimble Horizon (£595).

Sarah is a first-time mum and journalist living in Shad Thames, London. She tested the latest Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 on her area's cobbled streets and the city’s riverside walks and parks with her 7-week-old baby Roger.

What were your first impressions of the Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020?

The whole set of pushchair components came in one neat box and was extremely well packaged and protected so all were in pristine condition post-transit. Everything felt like it was made, of good quality materials with a nice finish, from the faux leather handle to the plush bamboo carrycot lining.

silver cross wayfarer full

How easy is it to build?

The instructions were fairly clear but it did take a good 30 minutes for me to put the Wayfarer together. There were a few fiddly bits, particularly the assembly of the carrycot.

Rather than this arriving already put together as one piece as with some other pushchairs, there were quite a number of components to put together. I found this all a bit convoluted and confusing and wondered if the process could be simplified.

However, you only need to put it together once so this shouldn’t be a dealbreaker. Just don’t try to put it together in a rush and have someone to hand to help you.

How does it compare to the previous version of the Silver Cross Wayfarer?

The Wayfarer 2020 is the latest, updated version and has several new features. Firstly it is lighter than its predecessor - the carrycot and chassis have a combined weight of 9.7kg, and chassis and toddler seat weigh 10kg.

It also has a larger shopping basket and the styling is updated. It now includes quilted fabric for the carrycot apron, faux-leather trim and cover for the handle and a chrome finish on the chassis.

This latest model comes in four colourways including Clay, Sky, Sapphire and Pepper, but the weight limit for the toddler seat has gone down to 22kg (previously 25kg).

What do you think of the carrycot?

Though I felt the carrycot was unnecessarily complicated to put together, once in one piece it was very high quality and really cosy and comfy for our baby.

The inner lining had a gorgeous super soft finish - it’s made of a naturally antibacterial bamboo which helps to regulate your child’s temperature, according to the brand. And the mattress was safely firm and breathable. Roger often fell straight asleep and looked snug as a bug in a rug every time I took him out in it!

silver cross wayfarer flat

The quilted apron looked beautiful, with a Union Jack silver tag and Silver Cross Logo on the fold, and provided good warmth. I prefer when the apron has a zip to undo to take the baby out but the catch and velcro also worked fine. The apron comes up quite high so even though I am fairly tall I have to peer over slightly to see his face completely if I want to check on him.

silver cross wayfarer carrycot

I really like that the carrycot has a substantial hood which provides additional protection both from the wind when fully extended but also from the sun. It features UPF50+ sun protection fabric and an extra sun visor too.

The pushchair also comes with a rain cover (with its own neat storage bag) which is very easy to put on in a hurry and fits snugly over the carrycot, complete with ventilation holes and a velcro opening. Being pretty roomy, I’d imagine the carrycot would last well until our baby is 6 months.

How easy is the carrycot to add on/take off the pushchair?

The carrycot is fairly easy to take off with a simple pull catch on either side which you can undo one at a time before detaching. Weighing 2.7kg it wasn’t too difficult to lift, and it has a lovely leatherette-covered bar that matches the pushchair handle.

Although it is quite light it is a bit tricky to detach the whole carrycot with the baby inside as it is quite big overall – however, it is doable. You can also use the carrycot for occasional overnight sleeping which is really handy for visiting friends and family, as you don’t need to worry about a travel cot.

Is the Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 car seat compatible?

Yes, it is compatible with the Dream and Simplicity Plus (£175 on Amazon ) car seats which is useful if you're taking your baby on lots of car journeys.

How do you fold the Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020, and how easy is it?

I loved the ease of the folding mechanism for the chassis on the Wayfarer, and the fact it can be folded with the seat attached in forward-facing, upright position.

There is a bit of knack to it:

  • Ensure the swivel wheels are locked and the brake is on
  • Press the fold button on the right hand side of the pram
  • Pull up on both sides and push down to collapse the frame until the fold lock engages

Once I’d worked it out it was super easy and fast to collapse the whole chassis in a smooth motion, and the wheels cleverly also fold in as you do it.

How compact is the Wayfarer 2020 once folded?

One downside of the Wayfarer 2020 is that the buggy is quite bulky once folded. When combined with the size of the carrycot, which only has a collapsible hood, it only just fit in our car boot (we have a mini SUV – a Hyundai Kona) – and we need to remove he parcel shelf to fit it in. It is also slightly awkward for me to lift the chassis into the boot once folded, more for its size (L85cm W54cm H32cm) than weight (7kg).

silver cross wayfarer boot

How well does the Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 handle – is it easy to push?

A definite highlight of the Wayfarer 2020 was how smooth the ride was. It was a delight to push and it was so easy to steer with brilliant manoeuvrability.

The previous Wayfarer model seemed to split users’ opinions. Among our MFM website’s user reviewers, many love the model, giving it 5 out of 5 stars, yet there are a few dissenters who don’t like the way it handles at all due to its smooth EVA wheels .

For me, it performed well. There are lots of cobbled streets in our area of London (Shad Thames) so the tiniest of city pushchairs often struggles (or my baby looks like he is sat on a pneumatic drill - not ideal!). But the Wayfarer 2020 does the job well. It also handles other bumps, although with kerbs I have to get the angle just right if the front wheels aren’t locked forward. Otherwise they get stuck and I have to back up and do it again.

silver cross wayfarer kerb

Predominantly designed for urban spaces, the Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 is obviously at its best on pavements, but it also copes on grass and muddy park paths. However, I think if I were planning to be outside the city a lot, with regular countryside walks, I would opt for something a little sportier with bigger wheels and better suspension.

Equally, if I were constantly on public transport (because of Covid we aren't using the bus and tube like we would normally) I may want something more nippy. But for our main uses, such as walks along the Thames Riverside and around local parks and the odd bus journey, it very much fit the bill.

How sturdy is the chassis?

The Wayfarer’s frame feels durable and has a really nice chrome finish. It perhaps feels more delicate than the very sporty, all terrain pushchairs, but for city walks I have no doubt it will hold up well for some time.

silver cross wayfarer chassis

How do you rate the pushchair's handlebar?

The handlebar is beautifully designed. I has a chrome centre bearing the Silver Cross Logo and is covered with a blue faux leather across each side which feels very nice and looks fabulous. You also have the impression it will wear very well.

The handle is also super easy to adjust – you squeeze a button in the centre - and it extends to 4 different levels to quite a length which makes it much more comfortable me to push without feeling like I am kicking the chassis. I’m 5ft 7 and it is perfect for me nearly all the way extended, and for my partner fully extended. Having had a C-section, it is important that I wasn't leaning or straining while walking so the position is great.

silver cross wayfarer handlebar

How do the wheels perform?

I loved the wheels. Their chrome finish almost looks like alloys on a car. You can lock the front wheels easily, and at a decent size, they go over most pavement bumps and grass without too much trouble.

They are made of a durable rubber (puncture-proof EVA) which is unlikely to burst, although this does mean they're not suited to bumpier terrain. You can also easily remove the wheels for storage or if you wanted to clean them.

How easy are the brakes to use?

I didn’t find the brakes totally intuitive - there is a red button you press down with your foot to engage the brake and a tiny green button to release it. Once I knew how they worked they were super easy and effective. They held well on a flat and incline though if it was very windy it did waver slightly.

How spacious is the basket on the Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020?

The shopping basket on the Wayfarer 2020 is a decent size to fit in my changing backpack and extra items such as a spare blanket and sling.

However, the space to access the basket when the carrycot is already attached is way too snug, making it a bit tricky to get things in and out of it. It is something our MFM reviewer and MFM users remarked on the previous model, so it’s a shame Silver Cross hasn’t solved this design flaw.

silver cross wayfarer basket

What’s in the box?

  • Carrycot hood and apron
  • Pushchair seat unit
  • What are the additional accessories that you can buy?
  • Changing bag (£85)
  • Foot muff (£85)
  • Winter pack (£100)
  • Car seat adaptors (£30)
  • Cup holder (£30)
  • Luxury seat liner (£60)

Now you’ve tested it, what would you have wanted to know before purchasing the pushchair?

It is definitely worth checking the dimensions when folded against the size of your car boot. It only just fit in ours (Hyundai Kona), so it may not fit other vehicles. However, once we migrate to the toddler seat, it should take up much less space, so it’s not a long term issue.

Depending on how much stuff you’re planning to store in the shopping basket, the narrow access when the carrycot is attached could also be a deal breaker. Silver Cross offer a set of Elevate Adaptors (£30) which raise the height of the carry cot or pushchair seat, that can provide easier access to the shopping basket.

Who would this pushchair be most useful for?

The Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020 is ideal for city-dwelling parents who are looking for something stylish yet functional for a fairly affordable price. The overall design aesthetic is a modern twist on tradition rather than overtly trendy or sporty, but it has a premium, sophisticated look that punches above its weight in terms of price tag. It's perfect for those wanting regular walks about town and in parks while also looking swish.

silver cross wayfarer city

Is the Silver Cross Wayfarer worth the money?

I think it is very good value for money. It's not super cheap at £695 but is some way off the eye-wateringly expensive top tier brands. Yet it offers high quality components and a top-end finish. It also includes both the carrycot and pushchair in the base price, so it will take your child from birth to toddler with no added extras and also includes a handy rain cover.

Where can I buy the Silver Cross Wayfarer 2020?

It's available from Silver Cross , Amazon and John Lewis .

MadeForMums verdict:

A fantastic pushchair for city-dwelling parents who want a stylish yet functional model without a hefty price tag. The overall design aesthetic is a modern twist on tradition rather than overtly trendy or sporty, but it has a premium, sophisticated look that punches above its weight in terms of price tag. It's perfect for those wanting regular walks about town and in parks while also looking swish. However, it is not the most compact, so not for those tight on space.

How to use the Moscow Metro (PHOTOS+INFOGRAPHICS)

silver cross grey travel system

It’s really convenient to use the Moscow Metro and city trains. They operate from 5:30 in the morning to 1:00 at night and you can pay for them with the same ‘Troika’ ticket card. Indeed, the map of the subway looks complex. But that’s only at first glance.

For starters, let’s separate the underground metro from surface city trains. The underground map is marked by bright solid lines, while the lines of surface routes are marked by two parallel lines with a white gap in between.

Underground metro system

It has two ring lines – the brown Koltsevaya, or Circle line (5) and the new Bolshaya Koltsevaya line (Big Circle Line) colored turquoise (number 11). These rings cross all other underground metro lines, so if you need to reach another line from the outskirts – it’s convenient to use one of the ring lines.

Circle Line

Circle Line

We can consider that the center of the city is inside of the ring line (5). Also there’s a multitude of transfers from one line to another within the brown ring. The record holder is Biblioteka Imeni Lenina – Arbatskaya – Alexandrovsky Sad – Borovitskaya. These whole four lines crossed in one place (right next to the Moscow Kremlin). Also, you can reach the Kremlin quickly and conveniently from stations Okhotny Ryad – Teatralnaya – Ploshchad Revolyutsii, which also have transfers between each other.

Big Circle Line

Big Circle Line

You can also reach the Vnukovo Airport right by metro! The corresponding station of the Solntsevskaya Line (8A) was opened in September 2023.

How does the underground metro operate?

Pykhtino metro station, opened in 2023

Pykhtino metro station, opened in 2023

The intervals between trains are really small – on average about 2 minutes; during rush hour, they run even more often. So you don’t need to run and squeeze yourself into closing doors (that’s also dangerous). Just wait for the next train, it’ll arrive quickly. Unlike the subway systems of other cities – the trains run along single lines, without branching away. So you can just board the train in the required direction without worrying that you will go somewhere you didn’t intend to.

There are only two exceptions:

  • From Alexandrovsky Sad Station of the light-blue line trains run either to Mezhdunarodnaya Station (where Moscow City is located, where a lot of businessmen go) or to Pionerskaya.
  • Bolshaya Koltsevaya line also has the so-called fork branching: from Savelovskaya Station to the Business Center (also to Moscow City).

Big Circle Line

Sometimes you can hear an announcement ‘This train runs to the station…’ If you need to go further, you simply need to get off at the station the train is bound for, and wait for the next train. Perhaps, this train just needs to go to the depot.

Surface routes:

Apart from the underground metro itself, the new map marks suburban trains. You can tell them apart immediately – these lines are indicated with two parallel lines with a white gap in between.

1) MCC: Moscow Central Circle (14)

Moscow Central Circle (MCC)

Moscow Central Circle (MCC)

Let’s take a look at the map again and find a red circle, situated between the underground Koltsevaya (5) and Bolshaya Koltsevaya (11) lines. This is the Moscow Central Circle (14) or simply MCC.

This is a surface urban train that circles around the city. There are stations from where you can transfer to the underground metro. However, these transfers usually are not as short as between subway stations. Sometimes you’ll need about 10 minutes of walking to transfer.

Moscow Central Circle (MCC)

So we don’t recommend you to use MCC purely as a transfer route. In addition, the interval between trains on MCC is longer than in the metro, and can reach 4-8 minutes, depending on the time of day.

However, a big advantage of the MCC is that it has a lot of stations that are far removed from the metro, and which are most conveniently reached specifically by the MCC.

2) Moscow Central Diameters (MCD)

Moscow Central Diameters (MCD)

Moscow Central Diameters (MCD)

Moscow diameters on the metro map are the longest lines that cross the entire city (hence, they are called diameters). They are reminiscent of urban trains, like S-Bahn in Berlin or Vienna or RER in Paris.

Those are suburban train lines that run from suburbs (from the Moscow Region, marked as a green shadow on the map) and, crossing the entire city, are bound for suburbs on the other side of the city. At some of the stations of a diameter you can get off and transfer to the metro or the MCC. During rush hour, MCD trains run with an interval of 5-7 minutes.

Moscow Central Diameters (MCD)

D1 – Belorussko-Savyolovsky Yellow Diameter runs from Odintsovo Station south-west from Moscow through Moscow City and Belorussky railway station to Sheremetyevo Airport and to Lobnya Station in the north.

D2 – Kursko-Rizhsky Pink Diameter runs from the Moscow Region city of Podolsk in the south through Kursky railway station, Three Station Square (Leningradsky, Kazansky, Yaroslavsky), and Rizhsky railway station to the village of Nakhabino in the north-west.

D3 – Leningradsko-Kazansky Orange Diameter runs from Ippodrom Station in the south-east (the city of Ramenskoye) to Zelenograd in the north.

D4 – Kaluzhsko-Nizhegorodsky Green Diameter runs from the city of Aprelevka in the south-west through Moscow City, Belorussky, Savelovsky, and Kursky railway stations, as well as through Three Station Square (Leningradsky, Kazansky, Yaroslavsky) to Zheleznodorozhnaya Station in the city of Balashikha in the east.

A fifth MCD line is also projected, which is promised to be finished by 2028. It will connect the south (Domodedovo) and the north (Pushkino).

3) Moscow Monorail

Moscow Monorail (highlighted above) and Light metro (bottom)

Moscow Monorail (highlighted above) and Light metro (bottom)

Look for the only monorail line in Russia to the north from the center of Moscow. It’s not just a surface line, it’s an elevated line that stands on piles. It’s a short line (13) that operates in an excursion mode – from it, you can get a beautiful view of the Ostankino TV Tower, for example.

Once per half an hour, the train runs from Timiryazevskaya Station (which is near the station of the same name on the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya (9) line, which is the gray metro line) to Ulitsa Sergeya Eisensteina Station, which is located next to the entrance to the VDNKh park and to the VDNKh metro station of the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya (6) metro line.

4) Light metro

Butovskaya (12) line in the south of Moscow runs from Buninskaya Alleya Station to Bitsevsky Park Station; from it, you can make a transfer to the gray Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya (9) line and the orange Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya (6) line. This line runs mostly on the surface, entering a tunnel, but is considered a part of the subway (hence, this line is marked with a solid line as other metro lines).

A useful piece of advice

The Moscow Metro website has an interactive map with all metro lines, MCC, and diameters. With it, you can build a route from the departure station to the destination station, take a look at all travel options and where you can make necessary transfers.

How to pay the fare

The convenience of the Moscow transportation system is that you only need the Troika card for travel with any type of public transport, be it the metro, suburban trains, or buses/trams. You can purchase it in ticket offices or from machines at stations. Also in souvenir shops and in the metro internet store you can purchase keychains, bracelets, and rings that work like a Troika card, as well as Troika cards with a unique and custom design.

Troika design dedicated to the 875th anniversary of Moscow

Troika design dedicated to the 875th anniversary of Moscow

You can top up your card by simply adding a particular amount of money – or purchase the Unified ticket for 60 travels or unified unlimited ticket for 1/3/30/90/365 days.

The deposit price of the Troika card is 80 rubles, and you can get it back when returning the card to the ticket office. The validity period of the card is 5 years, so you can save it for future travels.

One MCC, MCD (in the city center), and metro trip costs 54 rubles. Transfers in the metro, MCC, or between diameters are free within 90 minutes. The fare on MCD in the suburbs costs 71 rubles.

Important: you need to pay the fare in the metro and MCC only upon entrance. On diameters, you need to activate trips upon entrance and then tap your card again at the turnstile upon exiting.

Also almost every station has a terminal where you can pay your fare, tapping your bank card.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
