The morning 1 hour ride that will take us from Kotor to Lovćen has 25 sharp hairpin turns, so make sure you don’t overeat yourself during the morning breakfast. Additionally, our Skadar lake cruise will provide us an amazing opportunity for great swim and chill. We are visiting the beautiful Lipa cave, and the temperature inside is around 10 degrees Celsius, so make sure to have something warm to wear, if needed.
Morning Start
We start pickups in Kotor at 8 AM. As the day is quite long, a bit earlier start is recommended. If you are staying outside of Kotor, please let us know and we are happy to pick you up anywhere in Kotor bay region or Budva.
Kotor Serpentines
The first part of the tour will be a stunning experience of driving via an Austrians made road (1879) that originally connected Kotor and Cetinje, the old royal capital of Montenegro. Our drivers are well experienced and driving this roads will be a pleasure. The road is enriched with 25 hairpin turns, and with several panorama stops, it gives us an amazing view over the Kotor bay.
Once at the top, we have arrived at Lovćen National Park, a core and heart of Montenegro, its most valuable cultural, historical and religious heritage site.
> Kotor Serpentines, 8.3km long stretch of stunning driving experience
The Lovćen National Park was founded in 1952, with an area of 6220 acres. The heart of Lovćen is considered to be Jezerski vrh (1657m) on which the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, the most famous poet, bishop and ruler of Montenegro from 1830 to 1851, was built.
> Lovćen National Park Observation point at Petar II Petrović Njegoš Mausoleum
Having climbed 461 steps, carved into the sheer rocks, we get the opportunity to explore the Mausoleum and to enjoy the 360 views of the stunning Montenegro landscapes. On one side we can see Skadar Lake and majestic Montenegro mountains, and on the other, stunning Kotor bay, and if the day is clear, possibly even the coast of Italy.
> Petar II Petrović Njegoš Mausoleum interior
Njeguši Village
After exploring the powerful story of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, we head down and take a short ride to Njeguši, the birthplace village of the Njegoš dynasty, which ruled Montenegro from 1696 to 1918. Njeguši village, aside from being the cultural and historical core of Montenegro, at the same time is the birthplace of Montenegrin national cuisine.
> Njeguši village under mighty peaks of Lovćen National Park
The idyllic village with just several tens of inhabitants, is homeplace to globally popular Njeguši prosciutto and Njeguši cheese. Since the region of Njeguši village ideally combines Mediterranean and Continental climate effects, the local products of prosciutto and cheese together with honey, rakija (eng. brandy), variety of herbs, local organic veggies and fruits, simply taste the best, and add up to the overall experience of this beautiful village.
> Njeguši prosciutto served with locally made cheese
Njeguši prosciutto is a dark colored pork meat of intensive taste. Salted, beech smoked and dried at the specially made dryers of 1m thick stone walls, combined with centuries old traditions and the art of making, this unique product of Montenegro is a must try. When you taste the Njeguši prosciutto, it feels as if you just have tried the pure hormone of happiness, serotonin, which tastes like the mysticism of the distant past.
At Funky Tours, we are devoted to the best of spiritual and material worlds, so tasting the best Njeguši prosciutto, combined with yellow Njeguši cheese, (if preferred, wine and local brandy), is simply a bit of both worlds.
After the historic and tasty visit to Njeguši village, our journey continues towards Cetinje – former center of the state, and today the cultural, historical and spiritual capital of Montenegro.
In the 2nd half of 15th century, the Ottoman conquests have forced the then master of Zeta, Ivan Crnojević to move the seat of the state, from the fortified town of Žabljak, to a more inaccessible climate, deep into the mountains, to a foothills of Lovćen mountain. During 1482, Ivan Crnojević built a court and monastery, which were the first establishments of the new capital, Cetinje. Later when Ivan Crnojević transferred the Zeta Metropolitanate to the newly built monastery, Cetinje in addition to the secular, became a spiritual center. In the mid 19th century, when already mentioned, the glorious Petar Petrović II Njegoš, managed to unite Montenegrin tribes and create the foundations of a modern state, Cetinje until today became the mythical place of Montenegrin nationalism and statehood.
> Cetinje Orthodox Monastery
During our walking tour of Cetinje, we will learn historic facts about Montenegrin old capital, hear about the first printing house of the South Slavs (just 4 decades after the Guttenbergs), visit famous Cetinje spots such as Cetinje Monastery, historic centre with its famous foreign embassies, museums, royal theatre, Biljarda (the new royal residence) and so much more.
If required, free time in Cetinje, to explore the historic town on your own will be arranged.
Just 5 kilometers from Cetinje, we will make a short detour and break away from socio-cultural stories to peek a bit into speleology, and visit Montenegro’s most famous speleological wonder, the Lipa cave. About 2.5km in length, a mix of beautiful passages and halls, enriched with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, some up to 5m tall, and with annual temperature ranging from 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, Lipa cave is a must see for anyone visiting the region of Cetinje.
Our 1 hour visit to Lipa cave is a professionally guided tour, with the local guide, whose speleological knowledge and expertise will additionally enhance our cave exploring experience.
> Beautiful Lipa Cave near Cetinje
Rijeka Crnojevića (Lunch break)
The lunch time is planned at Rijeka Crnojevića, or famously called Montenegrin Venice. When Ivan Crnojevic in 15the century founded Cetinje, in centuries to follow Rijeka Crnojevića (eng. Crnojević river – named after Crnojević dynasty), as one of the most famous Skadar lake tributaries, became the largest Montenegrin port and the leading trade center. Together with the Danilo bridge, built in 1853, several old buildings, a nice pedestrian zone and a few beautifully located traditional restaurants, Crnojevića Rijeka is the perfect place for lunch time chill.
> Crnojevića Rijeka boat cruise trail
Especially appreciated product of this region is dry bleak (dried fish), and due to its uniqueness and exceptional taste, traditionally very much in demand on the Italian market.
Normally, aside from locally appreciated fish, other Montenegrin continental and seafood dishes can be easily found here. Your Funky Tours Host job is to, according to your taste, recommend you the best food from the offer.
Optional: Skadar Lake Boat Cruise
After delicious lunch you can even on spot if you prefer to do boat ride on Skadar Lake. We definitely recommend it as it will probably be the most inspiring moments of the day.
Price for an hour of ride vary from 35 to 50 EUR per group (up to 10 persons depending on the season) and you can prearrange your preferred number of hours with us in advance, or alternatively you can negotiate price on the spot with local boat suppliers.
Lake Skadar is a natural wonder. A protected National Park of Montenegro and Albania and a paradise of wildlife. Being home to more than 260 bird species, islet monasteries, old and traditionally built stone villages, stunning beaches, Skadar lake is Montenegro’s true heart and soul.
Our afternoon boat cruise will take us via Crnojevića river and Skadar Lake to the small village of Žabljak at a confluence of Morača river. With optional short uphill hike and visit to the medieval fortress, which under the Crnojević dynasty, was a capital of Zeta, the views from the top will be simply amazing, and worth every single effort.
> Crnojevića Rijeka famous Pavlova strana viewpoint
For ornithology lovers, Skadar Lake is a true paradise. Unlimited offer of cormorants, herons, gulls, terns, ducks and sometimes a giant Dalmatian pelican, make this magnificent natural setting a must see.
Additionally carpets of water lilies, water snakes, frogs, all kinds of bugs and insects, fish, toads, dragonflies, etc., just add even more to an amazing Skadar Lake experience.
For true adventurers, during the summer time some swim and chill at crystal clear Skadar Lake is a must do.
Evening Return
In the late afternoon, after stopping at the stunning Pavlova strana viewpoint, and furthermore admiring the beauty of Skadar Lake, via Virpazar and Petrovac, we are back to Kotor.

Amazing tour and Montenegrin Experience with Funky Tours!!
We were a group of 4 in mid twenties and did two different day tours with this company. The first day was as advertised on their website and went to Skaddar Lake, Lipa Caves, Lovcen National Park, Rejiska, Centinje and the second was a customized tour to Durmitor National Park, Tara Bridge, Biogradska National Park and Moraca Canyon/Monastery.
Before we arrived in the country, the organization and communication was great and we found it easy to book tours and they were flexible and catered to our needs and what we wanted to see by making customized tours just for us.
Both tours themselves were absolutely fantastic. They were a perfect blend of different types of activities and allowed us to see nearly all of Montenegro in just a short space of time.
The company were also flexible with pickup and drop off in different cities to allow us to see all areas.
The guides (Skender, Ana and Slavko) were both a great blend of informative and fun. They were extremely knowledgeable about the country and the areas we visited and we learnt so much about the wonderful country.
We will definitely be booking with funky tours again when we travel to Bosnia/Serbia in the future.
The Funky Tours team was absolutely excellent!
Great people to spend the day with. Each taxi, host or guide they set us up with spoke great English and was very personable.
We spent 5 nights in Bosnia. Funky Tours set up everything for us. Our only major responsibility was to wake up and make it to the van, everything else into the evening was taken care of.
A very memorable trip.

What to Expect
Skadar Lake represents an oasis for all nature lovers. There are 264 species of birds on the lake, 73 species are nesting nests, 18 species are regular passersby, 45 species are winter guests, 12 species regularly spend the summer without stumbling. The reason for this diversity of birds is the ecological and geological characteristics as well as the unevenness of the ecosystem. Most often, cormorants, grey white and yellow herons, mussels, wild ducks, bar cuts and so on can be seen. The spectacular place is certainly taken by Pelican.
With its beautiful shore, Skadar Lake is captivated and enchanted by numerous visitors. On the lake itself, there is a large number of Orthodox monasteries on the islands of “Gorizia”. Monasteries date back to the 14th century and represent the most valuable segment of cultural heritage in the National Park.
It is definitely a place that should be visited if you are looking to enjoy nature with activities where everything feels like an adventure, to taste delicious organic foods and have fun. Come to experience when you are alone, with your friends or family on your adventure on the famous Skadar Lake:
- Spectacular plant and animal world of the park

10 Best Skadar Lake Boat Tours
BY SARAH PAVLOVIC
Taking a Skadar Lake boat tour is one of my all-time favourite things to do in Montenegro.
It's something we do at least once a year, and more often if we get the chance.
It's so beautiful, so relaxing and something we take all our visiting friends and family to do too.
There’s no feeling like gliding around the lake, through the lily pads, looking out for birds. Add to that the fascinating stone villages on the shoreline that can only be reached by boat and ancient monasteries – it’s a trip you’ll always remember!
A Skadar Lake boat cruise are the perfect way to kick back, relax and see the highlights of the lake in the comfort of your own traditional, Montenegrin lake boat.
Visiting in summer? This is the perfect time to take advantage of those warm lake waters and go for a dip!
When you come here there's only one family to go with. The Dabanović family are Virpazar locals and know the lake like the back of their hands – and they’re only too happy to show you their beautiful part of Montenegro!
Local's Tip: Don't take a tour on one of the large tour boats. The only way to see the best of the lake is on a small 'traditional, shallow lake boat that can take you through the narrow canals of the lake. On a traditional wooden boat you can pick water lilies as you drift through the lily pads, see baby ducks as they hide in the reeds and feel like you've discovered a hidden world as blue butterflies and dragonflies with rainbow wings flutter around your boat.
The large tour boats can't fit through these canals and miss some of the most special places on the lake. The small boats also give you the chance to find out about the area as you chat with your skipper and guide.
These tours start from idyllic Virpazar, a tiny village on the lake. Virpazar is never overrun with tourists and you can wander along the lake shore spying frogs, turtles, birds and water snakes.

Grmozur or Lesendro Island scenic Boat Cruise
There are two options on this Skadar Lake boat cruise: choose from either Grmozur Island or Lesendro Island.
Grmozur Island
This island is known as the ‘Montenegrin Alcatraz’, but today it’s home to all kinds of birds, lizards and snakes rather than prisoners. This is where the last king of Montenegro, Nikola Petrovic, liked to keep his political opponents.
Lesendro Island
This island has a fortress atop it that was built to protect Montenegro from invading Turkish armies during Bishop Petar Petrovic Njegos II’s reign. Unfortunately the Montenegrins weren’t successful and the Turks conquered the area and the island became known as Njegos’ sorrow.
Tour Details
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 1 hour Price: 1-5 people €30, 5+ people €36, 12+ people €3 per person
Lesendro and Lake Skadar Scenic Boat Cruise
This tour takes you past Lesendro Island and then through the little channels of the lake filled with water lillies, water chestnuts and reeds. These channels are home to many of the lake’s bird and fish species and it’s the ideal spot to do a little bird watching.
The tour is rounded out by cruising around more small islands and to the entrance of the channel which leads to Rijeka Crnojevica.
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 2 hours Price: 1-5 people €60, 5+ people €72, 12+ people €6 per person
Kom Monastery experience and Scenic Boat Cruise
My top pick.
This is our favourite Skadar Lake boat cruise. As well as cruising the lake and seeing the islands, channels and birdlife, this tour gives you the chance to get out of the boat and visit one of the historical sites on the lake – Kom Monastery. The monastery was built between 1415 and 1427 and is still a spiritual site for locals of Skadar Lake.
As well as being an interesting historical site, the monastery has a fabulous view over the lake which you can enjoy from a little seating area. You'll share the peace and tranquility with a few cats, friendly dogs, a mind-boggling array of chickens and perhaps a donkey.
The monastery's resident priest is one of the happiest people I've ever met and is only too happy to have company. He readily invites visitors to share a toast with his homemade rakija (very potent brandy), which he keeps in a giant drum.
When it's time to go, it's obvious that everyone would be more than happy to stay in this tranquil idyll, sipping rakija in the sun for the rest of the day. No wonder he's so happy, this place is Heaven on Earth.
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 4 hours Price: 1-5 people €120, 5+ people €144, 12+ people €12 per person per hour
Grmozur and Radus Spring Scenic Boat Cruise
On this tour you'll discover the legends of the Grmozur, Skadar Lake's Alcatraz. The island is also known now as Bird Island and it's a great spot for some bird-spotting.
After you'll head over to the lake's deepest spot, Radus Spring. You can swim here in the lake's warm waters and enjoy the varied varied bird life and stunning scenery.
Tour Details
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 3 hours Price: 1-5 people €90, 5+ people €144, 12+ people €9 per person per hour
Manastirska Tapija and St Nikola Monastery Scenic Boat Cruise
This tour will really appeal to keen bird-watchers. The circular trip passes the old fortress of Lesendro, Manastirska Tapija bird reserve and St Nikola, which is one of five Orthodox island monasteries on the lake.
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 4 hours Price: 1-5 people €120, 5+ people €144,12+ people €12 per person
Dodosi and Karatuna Scenic Boat Cruise
This tour will take you through the stunning Montenegrin landscape from Virpazar to Dodosi and back.
You’ll also see the village of Karatuna and its villagers who live in the traditional Montenegrin way – fishing, farming and wine-making.
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 4 hours Price: 1-5 people €120, 5+ people €144,12+ people €12 per person
Rijeka Crnojevica Scenic Boat Cruise
This tour takes you through stunning river scenery all the way from Virpazar to Rijeka Crnojevica, which is a town founded in the 15th Century by the ruler Ivan Crnojevic. It then became a summer destination for subsequent rulers.
Along the way you'll be sure to see lots of birds, old stone villages and some of Montenegro's most stunning scenery.
Why not take a dip in the lake too?!
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 5 hours Price: 1-5 people €150, 5+ people €180,12+ people €15 per person
Half Day Scenic Boat Cruise
The half day tour takes you from Virpazar to Zabljak Crnojevica via Karuc and Dodosi. Along the way you’ll see the ruins of St Petar Cetinjski’s home and typical fishing villages. Not to mention the stunning lake scenery of the area!
Zabljak Crnojevica dates back to the end of the 14th Century and you’ll see the fortress town of Yabljak.
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 6 hours Price: 1-5 people €180, 5+ people €216,12+ people €18 per person
Radus Spring and the Island Monasteries of Starcevo Gorica, Beska & Moracnik Scenic Boat Cruise
This tour takes you down to the southern shores of the lake to visit the most remote island monasteries of Starcevo Gorica, Beska and Moracnik. In the background you'll be treated to views of the Prokletije mountain range and Albania on the other side of the lake.
Tour details
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 7 hours Price: 1-5 people €210, 5+ people €252,12+ people €21 per person
Full Day Scenic Boat Cruise
The full day tour is an 8 hour tour and departs Virpazar. It takes you past the ancient fishing villages of Seoca, Radus, Krnjice and Dracevica. You then visit Starcevo and Beska Islands which each have their own monasteries.
After visiting the islands you can freshen up with a dip in the lake from the boat or at Murici beach. The history in this area dates back to the 14th Century when the Balsics built their churches on Beska Island and at Starcevo Hill.
But your skipper will be able to tell you all about the history of the area as you go!
Start and finish point: Virpazar Duration: 8 hours Price: 1-5 people €240, 5+ people €288,12+ people €24 per person

What To Bring on a Skadar Lake Boat Cruise
Here's a list of things you should bring:
- Swimsuit - the water gets up to 26 C in summer, so it's great for swimming any time from May onwards
- Sunglasses, hat, sunscreen - I recommend sunscreen even if it's not hot because the sun reflects of the water. My son got burned in March and he was wearing a jacket.
- Snacks and water
- Long sleeves - it will be colder in the boat than on shore
Lake Skadar National Park Entrance Fee
Every visitor to Lake Skadar National Park must pay an entrance fee of €5. This is in addition to any activities like these boat cruises. You can buy your ticket at the tourist information offices in Virpazar and Vranjina.
All the Skadar Lake boat cruise options start in Virpazar. This is the the best location to see Lake Skadar. The little town has accommodation, restaurants and a visitor's centre.

LAKE SKADAR
LAKE SKADAR is the largest lake at the Balkan Peninsula, with fresh water and one of the largest national parks in Montenegro. The size of the lake is 379 sq. km of which 222 sq. km belong to Montenegro and the rest to Albania. The Lake Skadar basin is 28 m below sea level and its surface is 6 m above sea level which makes it the largest crypto-depression in Europe. During heavy rainfalls the water level of the lake rises and floods a significant part of the surrounding area. Its greatest depth is 44 metres. Lake Skadar is supplied with water mainly from the rivers Morača and Crnojevića Rijeka, while the Bojana River (44 km) is its outflow. But it is not only the water and the climatic influence of the Mediterranean that the Bojana River carries. It used to carry goods and cultural inspirations that influenced the architecture, arts, printed words, ways of earning money, and life in general. The living world here is very rich and heterogeneous, both in the water (22 species of fish) and above its surface (279 species of birds), as well as in human settlements along the coast. It’s extremely famous for its diversity of flora and fauna. Lake Skadar is included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance for its rarity. An interesting fact is that the seagulls – seabirds nest on freshwater island in Lake Skadar. The rare Dalmatian pelican has become a trademark of the lake too. Lake itself is unusual for mutual vicinity of different living areas and their chain of feeding. It’s a blissfully pretty area encompassing steep mountains, island monasteries, clear waters, and floating meadows of water lilies. There are some fifty islands in the Lake Skadar, some of which are well known for their very old and important cultural monuments. The Isle of Moračnik is famous for the Church of the Holy Virgin built during the rule of Balša III, between 1404 and 1417. On the Isle of Starčeva Gorica is the burial site of Vojvode Božidar Vuković - Podgoričanin, who had books printed in Cyrillic in Venice from 1519 to 1538 and there are medieval churches on the islands of Beška and Vranjina. In the region of Lake Skadar there are 20 monasteries, churches, villages, fortresses and sacred monuments. This lake is a witness of Montenegrin history from 11th century up to now. Around Lake itself there are 18 important historic sites.
One of those sites is Lesendro, a fortress ruin on the lake. The fortress was built in 1843 to ward off the invading Ottoman Turks on what was originally an island. The island was captured by the Turks in 1843 and further fortified. King Nikola Petrovic Njegos wanted it back so badly that now there’s a saying in Montenegro: ‘to long for something, like the bishop longs for Lesendro.’ He tried to take it back several times and finally succeed in 1878. The island became a peninsula when the bridge was built for the railway that links Belgrade (Serbia) and Bar on the coast.
Grmozur is another interesting site, known locally as ‘Montenegrin Alcatraz’. It’s also known as Snake Island. The island has the ruins of a fortress on it that was built by the Ottoman Turks in 1843. It was turned into a prison for non-swimming political prisoners once the Montenegrins liberated the area in 1878. Interestingly, guards on the island also couldn’t swim. It was damaged in an earthquake in 1905 and has fallen into ruin ever since. These days it’s also known as ‘Bird Island’ and it’s a good spot to see some of the lake’s resident birds.
Skadar Lake Tour
Our tour takes you on the perfect route to see a panorama view of Lake Skadar. You can take a boat tour out on the lake if you want and these tours are relatively inexpensive. Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula and has been named as a National Park. It was nominated for UNESCO heritage status in 2011. It was in the Lake Skadar region that royal families over the centuries chose to spend their summer months. Some of the region’s finest cuisine and wines are found here as well.
After your stop in Rijeka Crnojevica, you will slowly proceed to Cetinje. This is a small town that offers historical value. Founded during the 15th century, Cetinje offers wonderful historic sights and many photo opportunities. Upon leaving Cetinje, you will continue on the old road past Njegusi which is a quaint village that has been perfectly preserved over the centuries and offers traditional folk architecture. Local forms of prosciutto and cheeses known as Njeguski prsut and Njeguski sir are created solely in Njegusi. After this your tour will head back to Kotor. This amazing 7 hour experience is only 170e and allows you to view many historic regions of Montenegro, allowing you to stop at any time you like for rest or pictures of the wonderful landscapes.
