solo travel on a budget

Solo travel has never been more popular but the biggest challenge for those doing so is often financial. With extras like single supplements, the final tally can be more than anticipated.

Solo travellers think it's unfair, but hotels and tour operators say it's simply math. Not only do they lose the income from having two people in a room, but they also don't get full value from extras like food and drinks. So hotels and cruise lines tack on the single supplement, much to our chagrin. But with solo travel on the rise, the tides are changing and travel providers are accommodating this trend in a variety of ways.

Avoiding single supplements

The dreaded single supplement is the biggest financial obstacle to solo travel. Tour operators advertise rates based on double occupancy, so when a solo traveller signs up they're often charged up to double the per-person rate. However our voices are being heard, and travel companies are reducing or eliminating single supplements. But you need to know what to look for, and how to advocate. Here's how.

Choose tour companies wisely

Tour companies such as Intrepid Travel and G Adventures , and cruise lines such as Adventure Canada are now accommodating for and encouraging solo travel. In some cases, they waive the single supplements for a certain number of solo travellers (on a first-come, first-served basis). In other cases they'll play matchmaker so solo travellers can share a room and pay the lowest rate.

Check deals pages

Janice Waugh, founder of Solo Traveler , has made headway in the industry by featuring companies with no (or very low) single supplements on her regularly updated solo travel deals page . You can also sign up to receive these deals via email.

The earlier you book, the better. Tour companies often have limited discount spots for solo travellers, and they sell out quickly.

Book last min ute

Alternatively, you can book last minute. It's risky, but if there's still space, they may be willing to give it to solo travellers without single supplements to fill remaining spots.

Call and ask

If there is not a solo traveller discount advertised, don't despair. Simply phone to ask for a deal. It never hurts to ask!

Travel in the shoulder season

Your best chance for solo travel discounts are with shoulder season bookings. Companies are more willing to slash prices, since they're not as likely to fill up.

Booking accommodation

Booking a dorm bed in a hostel will give you the best rate as a solo traveller, but that's not everybody's style. For hotels, the cost of a room is a flat charge, with no consideration given to how many people are occupying it. This inherently makes it more expensive for solo travellers who aren't splitting the cost with a friend or spouse. Here are some suggestions to keep the cost of accommodation reasonable:

A smiling woman with sunglasses floating down a river on an inner tube on a sunny day.

Hostel private rooms

Private rooms in hostels are often cheaper than hotel rooms. Most hostel rooms have en suite bathrooms, but those with shared bathrooms will cost even less. Additional savings come with access to a kitchen, and meeting other solo travellers at the hostel can be fun.

Hotel single rooms

According to Waugh, more hotels are offering single rooms than ever before. 'The Z Hotels in the UK are a good example of this. It's worth noting, though well designed for efficiency, these rooms are very small and often without a window.'

Capsule hotels

Capsule hotels (which first became popular in Japan, and are cropping up elsewhere) are other examples of solo-traveller-friendly accommodation, albeit stingy on space.

Get free accommodation

Personally I've saved the most money on accommodation by getting it for free, in trade for volunteering a few hours each day. I've stayed in beautiful places around the world and enjoyed culturally rewarding experiences perfect for solo travellers. And it's not all about manual labour; I've enjoyed a wide range of volunteer opportunities over the years. Here's a primer on how to get free accommodation .

Other ways to save

Single supplements and double-occupancy hotel rates are the two biggest gouges on a solo travel budget. But armed with these extra tips, you can make the most of your travel adventures.

Transportation

If you're travelling with companions, then taking a taxi or Uber might make sense. But on your own, you'll save money booking shared vans or using public transportation. UberPool is also a great option, if it's available at your destination.

Tours and activities

'We frequently hear from solo travellers who cannot take a day tour because a two-person minimum hasn't been met by the tour provider,' says Waugh. This isn't a cost issue, but it is a hassle. Consider doing a free walking tour. You'll meet other travellers and get a local inside scoop, plus some customized recommendations from your guide.

Classes and meetups

There are cooking classes, language learning groups and couch-surfing meetups. Waugh likes Global Greeter Network  for meeting locals and learning about a destination.

Opportunities to cut your budget

Now for the good news: according to Waugh, solo travellers have some extra opportunities to save money! Flights are an example: 'Not all economy seats are the same price. If there's only one seat left at the lowest rate, a solo traveller will pay that rate. If a couple books two seats at a time and there's only one seat left at the lowest rate, they'll pay the higher rate for both seats. Also, last minute theatre tickets are much easier to get single seats for. And remember, even if you aren't offered a discount, don't be afraid to ask; you never know.'

Nora Dunn travelled full-time for 12 years, over half of which were solo. On her website The Professional Hobo, she helps readers manage lifestyle logistics (like earning/spending/saving/managing money) so they can travel indefinitely.

On that note, let's discuss how to set a solo travel budget and stick with it.

Is Solo Travel Expensive?

Solo travel doesn't have to be expensive. There are pros and cons when it comes to traveling solo and how it relates to your budget.

When you travel solo, you have complete control over your itinerary, which can help you save money. You can stay wherever you want, eat wherever you want, and do as many or as few tours and activities as you'd like.

How much you spend is totally in your control. This is one of the biggest benefits of solo travel .

However, there are some areas where you may end up spending more as a solo traveler. For example, you won't have anyone else to split the cost of hotels or taxis with. This is why it's crucial to understand how to set a solo travel budget and also save money on travel.

Considerations When Setting A Solo Travel Budget

Before you start to set a solo travel budget, there are several important factors to consider.

Determine available funds

Before you can plan your travel budget, you will need to determine the funds you actually have available for this trip. It's possible to travel solo to most destinations around the world - even notoriously pricy ones - as long as you're prepared and realistic.

If you don't have enough funds for your trip yet, determine the amount you'll spend and then set a timeline for saving money to achieve your goal.

You can use a website like BudgetYourTrip to get an idea of travel costs in destinations around the world.

Set realistic budget goals

Building off of the step above, you'll need to set realistic budget goals if you want to end up successfully sticking to your travel budget.

When setting budget goals, think about your own personal interests and travel style.

Are you a huge foodie who doesn't care as much about museums and tours? Is staying in a luxurious hotel room your top priority? Whatever the case is, you'll want to pinpoint your priorities and budget accordingly.

Budget categories

Dividing your travel expenses into categories can help you effectively budget for a trip. The main categories you'll want to budget for include:

  • Transportation
  • Travel Insurance
  • Miscellaneous

You might want to build in a 10% buffer to your total travel budget to account for miscellaneous costs. It can also be a good idea to set aside some money for emergency expenditures. This will help you stay prepared and travel solo successfully .

How To Set A Solo Travel Budget

Are you ready to learn how to plan a travel budget? Here are seven simple steps to follow to budget solo travel effectively.

1. Plan your itinerary. In order to successfully budget for your trip, you'll want to plan your itinerary first so you can accurately budget your expenses. For short trips of a week or two, it should be easier to get specific. For long-term trips like a multi-month backpacking trip, you may have to plan more broadly.

2. Identify transportation costs. How much will your flights cost? How much will transportation on your trip cost? Will you be taking additional flights, trains, buses, boats, taxis, or public transportation? This should all be factored into your travel budget.

3. Estimate food costs. Food is another key part of your solo travel budget and one that is fairly consistent. Set a reasonable daily spending limit for food. You may decide to eat one meal out per day and cook the rest of your meals at your accommodation. Additionally, opting for street food meals can be a smart way to save money. Whatever you choose, work it into your budget.

4. Identify activity costs. If you're taking a short trip, you may plan to pre-book tours and activities. If so, be sure to add these to your budget. For longer trips, you might allot yourself a certain amount for activities and tours each day or each week.

5. Don't forget travel insurance. If you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. Just check out these travel horror stories to see why it's so important. Covering your trip is more affordable than you might expect. Two of the best travel insurance providers are  SafetyWing and  World Nomads .

6. Add a buffer. After you've calculated your total travel budget, add a buffer for miscellaneous expenses. If your total budget is $1,500, you may want to add an additional $150 for spontaneous expenses that might crop up and another $150 as an "emergency fund" for your trip.

7. Commit to keeping yourself accountable. Finally, commit to checking in with your budget during your trip. It only takes a few minutes a day to track your expenses and make sure your expenditures are in line with what you planned for. You can use an app like Trabee Pocket to help with this.

Tips For Managing Travel Expenses

Planning your travel budget is one thing, but actually sticking to it is an entirely different matter!

Fortunately, there are travel budgeting tools you can use to track your travel expenses and ensure you are sticking to the travel budget you set.

Use a travel budgeting app

There are a number of ways you can manage your travel expenses. You can use a simple spreadsheet or a general budgeting app like Mint or You Need A Budget .

There are also (free!) travel budgeting apps like Trabee Pocket , Tripcoin , and TravelSpend that allow you to track your travel expenses across various categories.

Make budgeting a priority

You don't need to fixate on your budget the entire time you're traveling, but take a few minutes at the end of every day to tally your expenses and make sure you're on track.

Many travelers don't do this, which can lead to major overspending and regrets.

Choose the right payment methods

Before your trip, do some research on which payment methods you'll use. Some destinations are still very cash-dependent while others have gone almost totally cashless.

If you'll need cash, make sure you have an ATM card with no fees. For Americans, Charles Schwab's Investor Checking bank account allows you to withdraw money from any ATM in the world with no fees. Basically, any fees that are charged are reimbursed to you at the end of the month.

For credit cards and debit cards, you'll want to make sure your cards have no foreign transaction fees. While certain cards will have an annual fee - though this often comes with lots of travel perks - there are also credit cards that are $0 per year, like the SavorOne Rewards card from Capital One .

Choosing A Destination That Fits Your Travel Budget

If you're on a tight budget, choosing the right destination can help you stretch your money further. You can get more for your money in destinations like Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Central America than you can in Western Europe, North America, or Oceania.

Other factors to consider when choosing a destination include:

Seasonality

Traveling in the off-season is a great way to save money on your trip. Prices for everything - accommodation, transportation, and tours - are generally lower outside of the peak tourist season. Plus, as an added bonus, you can enjoy many destinations with much lower crowds.

There are some tradeoffs to traveling during the off-season. For example, it might line up with the rainy season or colder weather; but for many travelers, it's worth it for the savings.

You can also travel in "shoulder season," the month or two before or after the high season. This usually gives you the best of both worlds: good weather but lower prices and lower crowds.

Type of trip

Do you want to city-hop across European capitals, explore jungles, volcanoes, and ancient ruins in Central America, or explore beaches and rice paddies in Southeast Asia?

Depending on the type of solo vacation you want to take, this can factor into where you go and how you budget for your one-person vacation accordingly.

Budget-friendly destinations

Here are some of the best destinations worldwide for cheap vacations to take alone where your dollar will stretch further:

  • Southeast Asia: Indonesia , Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia , Philippines, Vietnam
  • Europe: Portugal , Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, Albania, Montenegro
  • Latin America: Mexico , Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru

This is by no means an all-inclusive list, but it gives you an idea of countries where you can have inexpensive solo vacations for as little as $50 a day - or less, if you take the following money-saving tips to heart.

How To Save Money On Flights

Flights can be one of the biggest expenses for any solo trip, especially if you are traveling internationally. Here are some ways to take inexpensive solo trips by saving money on flights.

Travel during the off-season

Traveling during the off-season is a great way to save money on all aspects of your trip, especially airfare. For example, flights to Europe from the U.S. may be as much as 50% lower during the months of October and November compared to the peak summer months of June through August.

Be flexible with your travel dates

If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you can score some great deals on airfare. Leaving or returning a day or two earlier or later may result in massive fare differences.

Of course, sometimes this means traveling at strange times (like leaving mid-week instead of at the start of a weekend) but if you can afford to be flexible, it can pay off massively.

In terms of how to tell which days are the cheapest for travel, Google Flights has a visual calendar with prices showing for each day.

traveler using Google Flights to set a solo travel budget

Set fare alerts

Can't be flexible with your travel dates? Set a fare alert on Google Flights and be notified when airfare drops for your specific dates. This can help you score seriously cheap flights.

It's a good idea to set a fare alert well ahead of time and keep in mind that the "sweet spot" for booking a domestic flight is 60 days in advance and 120 days in advance for an international flight.

Get notified about deals & error fares

If you want to find the absolute cheapest airfare possible and find error fare deals , there are a few tools you can use.

The first is Twitter . You can set alerts to receive Tweets from fare deal accounts like @TheFlightDeal and @SecretFlying.

There are also services like Going (formerly Scott's Cheat Flights) and FareDrop that send deals and error fares right to your inbox to help you save hundreds of dollars on flights.

For the above strategies, just make sure to book your flight right away, as typically the deals showcased change quickly. You might even make finding a great flight deal your method for choosing your destination!

How To Save Money On Accommodation

Your solo travel costs can skyrocket quickly depending on where you stay. Luckily, there are several ways to save money on solo travel accommodation.

Stay in hostels

One of the best ways to save money on accommodation for single travelers is by staying in hostels. Staying in a hotel can get very expensive if you don't have anyone to share the cost with.

Hostels are an affordable alternative for inexpensive solo travel. And if you think that hostels are only for young people or for backpackers on an extreme budget, think again!

Many hostels cater to travelers of all ages. There are also tons of hostels that resemble boutique hotels more than your typical hostel, and many have private rooms that are comparable to hotel rooms.

Of course, for travelers on a tight budget, staying in a shared hostel dorm room is one of the best ways to save money on your accommodation costs.

You can search a site like Hostelworld to compare the hostel options in your preferred destination. Once you search by location, date, and number of travelers, you'll be given a list of properties and will be able to see right away the rate as well as if private rooms are available.

traveler saving money on accommodation by staying at a hostel

Use travel credits & points

If you prefer to stay in hotels, using travel credit cards and redeeming points can be a great way to save money or even get a totally free hotel stay.

Many hotel chains like Marriott and Hilton offer co-branded credit cards with sign-up bonuses that can be earned after spending a certain amount of money within a few months of opening the card. These points bonuses can typically be redeemed for several free hotel nights.

You can also use a general travel rewards credit card, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , which offers similar sign-up bonuses in points that can be redeemed towards hotel stays and other travel. Just note that this card does have an annual fee, though it also comes with many travel perks.

Try housesitting or couchsurfing

If you're looking for a way to travel very cheaply and spend zero dollars on accommodation costs, housesitting and couchsurfing are two unconventional methods of travel to consider.

Housesitting involves staying in someone else's home and taking care of their pets and house while they are away. You may be responsible for feeding, walking, and playing with pets, watering the plants, keeping the house tidy, and generally taking care of the place while the owners are away.

Trusted Housesitter s is the best platform for finding housesitting jobs. It's a great way to live like a local in a new destination and save money on accommodation.

solo traveler walking a dog in exchange for free accommodation

Another option is couchsurfing. The official Couchsurfing website will help you connect with locals who offer free accommodation to travelers around the world.

As the name suggests, you might be sleeping on someone's couch, so it's not the most glamorous way to travel. But it's great for budget travelers who want to connect with locals.

Important solo travel safety tip : solo female travelers should be especially careful when couchsurfing. It can be a good idea to only stay with female hosts or to vet potential hosts by making sure they have positive reviews from other couch surfers first.

Speaking of safety, you might also consider packing a few travel safety essentials - like a She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm , which is TSA-approved and can help scare away potential attackers. Other recommendations include Clever Travel Companion Pickpocket-Proof Garments and Speakeasy Travel Supply Hidden Pocket Scarves .

How To Save Money On Food While Traveling Solo

Food is an area of your budget that can get eaten up quickly (no pun intended) while traveling if you aren't careful. Here are some ways to save on food while traveling solo without sacrificing the fun of eating out and discovering new cuisines:

Go grocery shopping

One of the best hacks for inexpensive solo travel is grocery shopping and cooking meals on your own while you travel. Most hostels offer communal kitchens, or you can be sure to choose an Airbnb , VRBO , or other rental that includes a kitchen.

You don't have to cook every meal on your own, but even just cooking for yourself a few times on your vacation instead of eating out can save you a lot of money.

Choose accommodation with free breakfast

Many hostels and budget hotels offer free breakfast every morning, which can be a great way to save money on one meal per day.

Before booking your accommodation, check to see which places offer free breakfast. You can fill up on a complimentary buffet breakfast in the morning, and then you'll only have to spend money on lunch and dinner.

Eat where locals eat

Finally, eating where locals eat is one of the best ways to save money on food while you travel. Restaurants that cater to tourists are often overpriced and don't even serve the best food.

However, if you get off the main tourist trail and seek out the spots where locals eat, you'll most likely find much better prices — and much better food.

Do some research before you travel to find the best local eats in the destinations you're visiting, or better yet, ask a local for recommendations once you arrive.

How To Save Money On Activities While Traveling Solo

Many activities, such as visiting museums and tourist attractions, will not cost you anything extra as a solo traveler. However, some activities do run the risk of incurring the dreaded "single supplement."

Here are some tips for cheap solo travel activities:

Research free activities

Free activities are one of the best strategies for how to travel solo on a budget. You'd be surprised at how many free things to do there are in most destinations.

For example, in New York City, there are dozens of free viewpoints you can visit rather than paying $50+ to go to an expensive observation deck.

Moreover, activities like solo beach days and solo hikes are almost always free.

Consider purchasing a city pass

Many popular destinations around the world, particularly major cities with lots of tourist attractions, offer city passes.

These passes give you access to many popular museums, attractions, and experiences for a discounted price compared to buying entry to each activity individually. They can also help make solo travel more fun by introducing you to a destination's top attractions.

If you're someone who enjoys visiting many museums and tourist attractions, this can be an excellent way to save money on activities. You can check the official CityPASS website to see if your destination is listed, though keep in mind there are other brands of discount passes too.

Avoid solo travel supplements

Unfortunately, some activities carry a single supplement for solo travelers. For example, cruises and tours that are priced based on double occupancy often carry a supplement for solo travelers.

When it comes to group tours, you can often agree to share a twin room with another traveler to avoid having to pay for a single supplement.

On cruises, you can sometimes find solo travel deals where the single supplement is waived or greatly reduced.

How To Save Money On Transport While Traveling Solo

When it comes to how to travel solo for cheap, managing your transportation costs is another important element for sticking to your solo travel budget.

One of the drawbacks of traveling solo is that you don't have anyone to split transportation costs with. When traveling with others, you can save money by splitting a taxi, Uber, or rental car.

But on your own, here are some ways to save money:

Use public transportation

Public transportation is one of the best ways to save money while traveling solo. Taking a taxi or an Uber all the time can quickly get pricy, but public transportation typically costs a couple of dollars or less per ride.

If you'll be staying in a destination for an extended amount of time (more than a few days) and plan to use public transportation frequently, it may also be worth purchasing a weekly transit pass compared to buying single tickets.

Research transportation in advance

Another way to save money on transport is to come prepared to your destination. Research the best ways to get around in advance of your trip.

In some places, renting a car may actually work out to be a cheaper option, while in other places, you might save money using rideshare services, buses, or trains.

Stay in a central location

Staying in a central location is a great way to save money on transportation in your destination. You may find a hostel that's $10 cheaper outside the city center, but what if you have to spend $10 a day on transportation costs to get where you want to go?

Choosing a central location means that you'll be able to walk around more and spend less money on transport costs. You may also want to choose accommodation that's close to the train station or public transportation in your destination.

Where To Get Travel Insurance

Before heading off on a solo trip, it's wise to get travel insurance.

One of the  best travel medical insurance for travelers  is SafetyWing as they’ve got a large network and offer both short-term and long-term coverage — including coverage if you’re traveling for months as well as limited coverage in your home country.

Additionally, SafetyWing is budget-friendly and offers $250,000 worth of coverage with just one low overall deductible of $250.

Click here to price out travel insurance for your trip in just a few clicks .

Post-Travel Budget Review

After your trip, it's a smart idea to do a post-travel budget review. Find an hour to sit down and closely review how much you spent during your travels.

Take a look at your initial budget and your actual expenditures and see how well you stuck to what you planned to spend. Were there any areas where you went over budget?

Maybe you spent way more money than you expected on going out to eat, or maybe you ended up splurging on Ubers or taxis more often than you took public transportation.

Identify these areas of improvement for future travel planning purposes, but don't get down on yourself too much for a little bit of overspending. Money will come and go, but the memories from your travels will last a lifetime, and that is priceless!

Planning A Solo Trip On A Budget: Final Thoughts

Hopefully, these tips can help you confidently travel the world solo on a budget! While travel can certainly be expensive, it's also possible to book travel at a reasonable price.

It's helpful to look at the biggest costs to determine how you can get them down, like traveling outside of peak season, such as during shoulder season, and making use of strategies to keep big ticket items like flights and hotels low.

Using the steps above, you'll be able to create a travel budget for your solo vacation - and stick with it!

Traveling solo seems like a far-off dream reserved only for hippies and Instagram influencers. But these solo travel bloggers have tactical money tips for any traveler to help you think less about money, and more about exploring your destination.

1. Be flexible

Drew Binsky, who has been to 140 countries and counting, says flexibility is key for cheap travel. “You simply can’t be constrained on exact days and times to travel, because you can get killer cheap flight deals by being flexible,” he writes. For solo travelers, it can be easier to be flexible since there is only one schedule to accommodate.

2. Consider the high and low season

Along with flexibility, be willing to shift destinations based on their off-season. James Kelley of Escaping Abroad has swum with dolphins, turtles, and other wildlife. On these excursions, he warns travelers to try to avoid busy times of the year to get up close and personal with wildlife. Another plus? Traveling in the off-season tends to be cheaper, and travel points or miles may go further, too.

3. When eating out, opt for the deals

Stephanie Raley of Pearls and Passports recommends taking advantage of food and drink offers when dining out. Think happy hours, daily specials and coupons. Pro tip: Use a credit card that gives bonus points toward dining .

4. Choose a travel card carefully

Kate McCulley, the blogger behind Adventurous Kate, recommends selecting a credit card that has no transaction fees if you plan to travel abroad. Berna Anat, who has been living out of a backpack since January 2018, wrote in Young Adventuress that she has used large travel credit card sign-up bonuses to cover tickets to New Zealand and Bali.

But Alex Berger from Virtual Wayfarer reminds travelers to evaluate spending and debt behavior . Understand how your credit card spending and debt can affect rewards, and pick a card that works for you and your money habits.

5. Get creative with accommodations

Sabina Trojanova of Girl vs. Globe uses Hostelworld to find reviews and locations. Cailin O’Neil from Travel Yourself says to consider booking an apartment rental if you'd like a little more space to spread out than a hostel room.

6. Plan your budget

To keep your travels as stress-free as possible, set yourself a realistic budget and stick to it . Keith Jenkins of Velvet Escapes reminds travelers that if you overspend early on in your trip, it can lead to a headache later.

7. Prioritize travel (If that’s how you want to spend your money)

A common theme of these solo travel bloggers is to make travel a priority in your budget. Finding ways to reduce costs in daily life leaves income for travel. Shivya Nath from The Shooting Star writes that she loves most of the work she does, but also says that the work she doesn’t love “pays for exorbitant flights and my student loan.”

Solo Travelling women with backpack

In this blog post, we will discuss some of the best budget-friendly travel hacks for solo travellers.

Travelling solo can be a life-changing experience, but it can also be expensive. Many solo travellers are on a tight budget, and finding ways to save money while still having a memorable trip can be challenging. However, with some careful planning and creativity, it’s possible to have an amazing solo travel experience without breaking the bank.

We have curated a list of budget-friendly travel tips you can use if you prefer to travel solo or otherwise. Let’s have a look:

1. Choose budget-friendly destinations

One of the best ways to save money while travelling solo is to choose budget-friendly destinations. Some destinations are more expensive than others, and by choosing destinations that are more affordable, you can save money on travel and accommodation.

Some examples of budget-friendly destinations for solo travellers include:

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is known for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and affordable prices. Countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia offer a wide range of affordable accommodation options, delicious street food, and unique cultural experiences. Plus, with the region’s extensive network of buses, trains, and low-cost airlines, it’s easy to get around without spending a lot of money.

Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe is another great option for budget-conscious solo travellers. Countries such as Poland, Hungary, and Romania offer a rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and affordable prices. Plus, with the region’s extensive network of buses and trains, it’s easy to get around without spending a lot of money.

Central America

Central America is a popular destination for backpackers and solo travellers thanks to its stunning beaches, ancient ruins, and vibrant culture. Countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica offer a wide range of affordable accommodation options, delicious food, and unique cultural experiences. Plus, with the region’s extensive network of buses and low-cost airlines, it’s easy to get around without spending a lot of money.

India is a vast and diverse country that offers a wealth of cultural experiences, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine. From the bustling cities of Delhi and Mumbai to the serene backwaters of Kerala, there’s something for every type of traveller in India. Plus, with a wide range of affordable accommodation options and an extensive network of buses and trains, it’s easy to travel around without breaking the bank.

South America

South America is a vast and diverse continent that offers a wealth of cultural experiences, stunning natural landscapes, and unique cuisine. Countries such as Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia offer a wide range of affordable accommodation options, delicious food, and unique cultural experiences.

Mexico is a budget-friendly destination that offers a rich culture, beautiful beaches and delicious food. You can find affordable accommodation and food throughout the country, and transportation is also quite cheap. Popular destinations include Mexico City, Cancun, Tulum and Oaxaca.

These destinations offer affordable accommodation, food, and activities, making them ideal for those who want to explore new places without spending a fortune.

2. Travel during the off-season

Travelling during the off-season can be a great way to save money while still having an incredible travel experience. The off-season typically refers to the time of year when tourism is at its lowest, which can vary depending on the destination.

Lower prices on accommodation

One of the biggest advantages of travelling during the off-season is that you can often find lower prices on accommodation, flights, and activities. This is because demand is lower during this time, and businesses may offer discounts or promotions to attract more customers. Additionally, you’ll often find that popular tourist attractions are less crowded, which means shorter lines and fewer crowds.

Have authentic travel experiences

Another advantage of travelling during the off-season is that you’ll have a more authentic travel experience. Many popular tourist destinations can become overcrowded during peak season, which can take away from the local culture and atmosphere. Travelling during the off-season allows you to experience a destination more like a local, as you’ll have more opportunities to interact with the local community and participate in cultural events and activities.

Prepare for the weather

One thing to keep in mind when travelling during the off-season is that weather conditions may be less favourable. For example, if you’re travelling to a tropical destination during the off-season, you may experience more rain or cooler temperatures. However, with the right preparation and clothing, you can still have an enjoyable travel experience.

When planning a trip during the off-season, it’s important to do your research and plan accordingly. Some destinations may have limited services or attractions during the off-season, so it’s important to know what to expect before you go. Additionally, it’s a good idea to be flexible with your travel dates, as prices and availability may vary depending on when you’re travelling.

In conclusion, travelling during the off-season can be a great way to save money while still having an incredible travel experience. By taking advantage of lower prices and fewer crowds, you can have a more authentic travel experience while staying within your budget. Well, use this travel tip if travelling solo and looking to save some big bucks. Just be sure to do your research and plan accordingly to make the most of your off-season travel adventure.

3. Use public transportation

Using public transportation while travelling solo can be a great way to save money and experience the local culture. Depending on the destination, public transportation options can include buses, trains, subways, and even ferries.

Not only is public transportation generally cheaper than taking taxis or renting a car, but it’s also a great way to experience the local culture and interact with locals. You’ll often see people from all walks of life on public transportation, and it can be a great way to get a glimpse into daily life in your destination.

Plus, using public transportation is more eco-friendly and can reduce your carbon footprint by decreasing the number of cars on the road. It’s a win-win situation for both your wallet and the environment.

Many public transportation systems are easy to use, with clear signage and maps available. It can often be more convenient than driving, as you don’t have to worry about finding parking or dealing with traffic. And with the security measures in place, it’s generally a safe option for solo travellers who want to avoid walking alone at night.

Of course, it’s important to be prepared and know the system before you go. Research the routes and schedules, and make sure you have the correct change or ticket before boarding. Keep your belongings close to you and be aware of your surroundings to ensure your safety.

So next time you’re planning a solo trip on a budget, consider using public transportation. This travel hack for solo travellers, not only will save money, but you’ll also have the chance to experience the local culture and interact with locals. It’s a great way to make your trip more memorable and meaningful.

4. Stay in hostels

Another great budget-friendly travel hack for solo travellers is to stay in hostels. Hostels offer affordable dormitory-style rooms, as well as private rooms for those who want more privacy. Not only are they cheaper than hotels, but additionally, hostels often offer communal spaces and activities, such as communal kitchens and game rooms, which can provide opportunities to meet other travellers

Hostels are often designed with solo travellers in mind, with shared dorm rooms and communal areas where you can hang out and socialize. You’ll often find travellers from all over the world, making it a great way to meet people and learn about different cultures.

In addition to being more social, hostels are also often located in central areas, making it easy to explore your destination on foot or using public transportation. And with amenities like shared kitchens and laundry facilities, you can save even more money by cooking your own meals and washing your own clothes.

Of course, it’s important to do your research before booking a hostel. Look for reviews and ratings from other travellers to ensure that the hostel is safe and clean. And don’t be afraid to ask questions or make special requests to ensure that you have a comfortable stay.

While staying in a hostel may not be as luxurious as staying in a hotel, it’s a great way to save money and make new friends while travelling solo. Plus, the memories and experiences you’ll gain from staying in a hostel will be priceless. So next time you’re planning a solo trip on a budget, consider staying in a hostel and experiencing the true essence of solo travel using this travel hack.

5. Cook your own meals

Eating out can be expensive, especially when travelling solo. One of the best ways to save money on food while travelling is to cook your own meals. Cooking your own meals while travelling solo may seem like a hassle, but it can actually be a fun and budget-friendly way to experience local cuisine and save money.

One way to do this is to shop at local markets or grocery stores for fresh ingredients and cook your own meals in a shared kitchen at a hostel or guesthouse. This not only saves money on expensive restaurant meals but also allows you to experiment with local ingredients and create your own unique dishes. Many hostels offer communal kitchens, which allow you to prepare your own meals so you can look out for that.

Another option is to book accommodations that come with a kitchenette or even a full kitchen, allowing you to cook your meals in the comfort of your own space. This can be especially convenient if you have dietary restrictions or preferences and need to cook your meals yourself.

Of course, cooking your own meals does require some planning and preparation. Before you travel, research local markets and grocery stores in your destination, and make a list of basic ingredients and cooking supplies that you’ll need. Don’t forget to pack any necessary cooking utensils, like a portable stove or cookware.

Cooking your own meals while travelling solo may seem daunting at first, but it can be a great way to save money and experience local culture in a unique way. So next time you’re travelling on a budget, consider taking a trip to the local market and whipping up a meal that you’ll never forget.

6. Take advantage of free activities

When you’re travelling solo on a budget, taking advantage of free activities can be a great way to explore your destination without breaking the bank.

One of the best things about travelling is discovering new places and experiences, and you don’t always need to spend a lot of money to do that. Many destinations offer free walking tours, museums, and cultural events that can provide an immersive experience and give you a deeper understanding of the local culture.

For example, many cities have free walking tours led by locals, who will take you through the streets and share their knowledge and stories about the history and culture of the place. These tours are a great way to explore the city and learn about its hidden gems and lesser-known attractions.

Another way to enjoy free activities is to take advantage of natural landmarks and parks. Hiking, walking, or cycling in a nearby park or nature reserve can be a great way to experience the local landscape and scenery. If you’re travelling to a beach destination, spending a day soaking up the sun and swimming in the ocean can be an enjoyable and free way to spend your time.

Furthermore, checking out local events such as markets, festivals, and concerts can be a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and meet new people without spending a lot of money.

When you’re travelling solo, taking advantage of free activities can be a great way to not only save money but also make the most of your trip. So do your research, explore the local area, and discover all the amazing free activities that your destination has to offer. Well, use this travel tip if travelling solo and say thanks to us later.

7. Travel with a water bottle and reusable bag

Travelling with a reusable water bottle and bag may seem like a small thing, but it can have a big impact on your budget and the environment.

When you’re travelling, it’s easy to spend a lot of money on bottled water and snacks, especially in touristy areas where prices can be inflated. However, by bringing a refillable water bottle and reusable bag, you can save money and reduce your environmental impact.

For example, many airports and tourist destinations now have water bottle refill stations, so you can fill up your bottle for free and avoid buying expensive bottled water. Additionally, some cafes and restaurants offer discounts or free refills for customers who bring their own bottles.

Bringing a reusable bag is also a smart idea when you’re travelling. Not only can you use it to carry groceries or souvenirs, but it can also come in handy when you’re out exploring. For example, if you’re visiting a beach, you can use your bag to collect any litter you come across and help keep the environment clean.

Furthermore, using a reusable bag can help reduce the amount of plastic waste generated by your trip. Many countries and cities are taking steps to reduce plastic waste, and by bringing your own bag, you can do your part in promoting sustainability and reducing waste.

Travelling with a reusable water bottle and bag is a simple yet effective way to save money and reduce your environmental impact. So next time you’re packing for your solo trip, don’t forget to pack your reusable essentials and make a positive impact on your budget and the planet.

8. Use travel apps and websites

In this digital age, there are countless travel apps and websites that can help you save money and make the most of your solo travels. Whether you’re looking for cheap flights, affordable accommodations, or fun activities, there’s an app or website for everything.

One of the best ways to save money on flights is to use flight aggregator websites like Skyscanner or Kayak . These sites search hundreds of airlines to find the best deals and allow you to set alerts for price drops or flash sales. This way, you can book your flight when prices are at their lowest and save a significant amount of money.

When it comes to accommodation, there are many apps and websites that offer budget-friendly options like hostels, homestays, and vacation rentals. Hostelworld and Booking.com are great for finding affordable hostels and budget-friendly hotels, while Airbnb and HomeAway offer unique and affordable vacation rental options.

In addition to flights and accommodation, there are also travel apps and websites that can help you find free or low-cost activities and experiences. TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet are great resources for finding things to do in your destination, while Couchsurfing and Meetup are great for connecting with locals and other travellers and finding free or low-cost activities.

Using travel apps and websites can also help you stay organized and informed during your trip. Apps like Google Maps, XE Currency, and Duolingo can help you navigate your destination, convert currency, and learn basic phrases in the local language.

Overall, using travel apps and websites is a great way to save money and make the most of your solo travels. So before you embark on your next adventure, be sure to do your research and download some of these useful tools to help you along the way.

9. Find free or cheap transportation

Transportation can be one of the biggest expenses while travelling solo. However, there are many ways to save money on transportation expenses. Finding affordable transportation while travelling solo can be a game-changer for your budget. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to get around without breaking the bank.

Public Transport

One of the most cost-effective transportation options is public transportation. Many cities around the world have extensive public transportation systems that are affordable and easy to use. From subways and buses to trams and trains, public transportation can be a great way to get around a city and save money on taxis and ride-sharing services.

Rent vehicle

Another option is to rent a bike or scooter, which can be an affordable and fun way to explore your destination. Many cities have bike-sharing programs, and there are also apps like Lime and Bird that allow you to rent electric scooters by the minute.

Take a bus or train instead of flying

If you’re looking to travel long distances between cities, consider taking a bus or train instead of flying. While it may take longer, it can be significantly cheaper and can also give you a chance to see more of the country you’re travelling through.

Consider hitchhiking

In some destinations, hitchhiking is also a viable option for solo travellers. This can be a great way to meet locals and fellow travellers and can also be a fun and unique experience. However, it’s important to do your research and make sure hitchhiking is safe and legal in your destination before you try it.

Finally, walking is always a great option, especially in compact cities or areas with lots of pedestrian paths. Not only is it free, but it also allows you to soak up the local atmosphere and discover hidden gems that you might have missed if you were travelling by car or public transportation.

Overall, finding free or cheap transportation is all about being resourceful and flexible. By taking advantage of public transportation, renting bikes or scooters, or walking, you can save money and have a more authentic and memorable solo travel experience. This is a perfect travel hack for solo travellers.

10. Use travel rewards programs

Using travel rewards programs is a great way to save money on your solo travel adventures. Many airlines, hotels, and credit card companies offer rewards programs that allow you to earn points or miles for your purchases, which can then be redeemed for free flights, hotel stays, or other travel-related expenses.

Sign-up for the travel program

When you sign up for a travel rewards program, you’ll typically receive a sign-up bonus of points or miles, which can help you get started on earning rewards right away. You can also earn points or miles by using your credit card for everyday purchases, such as groceries, gas, and dining out.

Read the terms and conditions

One thing to keep in mind is that not all reward programs are created equal. Some have blackout dates or limited availability, while others may require a certain number of points or miles to be redeemed for a reward. It’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully before signing up for a rewards program so that you know what you’re getting into.

Travel credit cards

To maximize your rewards, consider using a travel rewards credit card that offers bonus points or miles for specific travel-related purchases, such as flights, hotels, or rental cars. You can also look for promotions or special offers that allow you to earn extra rewards, such as double points or miles for certain purchases.

Combine travel points

Another way to make the most of your travel rewards program is to combine points or miles from different sources. For example, you might earn points through your credit card, hotel stays, and airline travel, and then combine those points to redeem for a free flight or hotel stay.

Overall, using a travel rewards program can be a great way to save money on your solo travel adventures. Just be sure to do your research and choose a program that works best for your travel style and preferences. With a little effort, you can earn plenty of rewards and enjoy your travels without breaking the bank.

11. Be flexible

Being flexible is the key to saving money while travelling solo. When you have a set plan, you may miss out on unexpected opportunities that could be cheaper and more fun. By being open to new possibilities, you can take advantage of last-minute deals or spontaneous adventures that fit your budget.

For example, instead of booking a flight and accommodations in advance, you could try to find last-minute deals on websites like Expedia or Kayak. You can also check out discount airlines like Spirit or Frontier for affordable airfare.

In addition, being flexible also means being willing to adjust your itinerary based on unexpected situations or circumstances. For example, if a particular activity or attraction is too expensive, you can look for alternatives or skip it altogether. Or if you find a great deal on a flight or hotel to a different destination, you can change your plans and take advantage of the savings.

Being flexible may require you to step out of your comfort zone and embrace new experiences, but it can also lead to unforgettable adventures and significant savings on your solo travels.

12. Travel light

Travelling light is one of the most effective budget-friendly travel hacks for solo travellers. When you’re travelling solo, you don’t have to worry about carrying extra luggage for anyone else, which means you can pack only the essentials.

One of the biggest advantages of travelling light is that you can save money on baggage fees if you’re flying. Many airlines charge exorbitant fees for checked bags, and these fees can quickly add up if you’re travelling frequently. By packing light and only bringing a carry-on bag, you can avoid these fees and keep more money in your pocket.

Be mobile and flexible

Travelling light also allows you to be more mobile and flexible during your trip. You won’t have to worry about lugging around heavy bags or waiting for your luggage at the baggage claim. Instead, you can easily move from one destination to another and take advantage of any last-minute opportunities or deals that may arise.

Bring essentials

When it comes to packing light, the key is to bring only the essentials. Start by making a list of everything you absolutely need for your trip, and then pare it down as much as possible. Stick to basic, versatile pieces of clothing that you can mix and match, and consider investing in a few high-quality, multi-purpose items that can serve multiple functions.

Pack smartly

Another important tip is to pack smartly. Roll your clothes instead of folding them, which saves space and minimizes wrinkles. Use packing cubes or compression bags to maximize space in your luggage, and consider leaving behind anything that you can easily purchase or borrow once you arrive at your destination.

Travelling light may take some practice and planning, but it’s a great way to save money, be more mobile, and have a stress-free travel experience. By following these tips and being mindful of what you pack, you can enjoy a budget-friendly solo trip without sacrificing comfort or convenience.

13. Plan ahead

Planning ahead can be an essential part of budget-friendly solo travel. It can save you a lot of money and help you avoid unexpected expenses. To make the most out of your trip, it’s important to research your destination beforehand and create a detailed itinerary. This will not only help you save money but also help you avoid missing out on any must-see attractions.

Create a budget first

Start by creating a budget for your trip and sticking to it as much as possible. This will help you plan out your expenses and make informed decisions about what activities and experiences are worth the cost. You can also use budgeting apps or spreadsheets to track your expenses during the trip.

Book in advance

When it comes to accommodation, booking in advance can often save you a lot of money. Look for deals and promotions on travel websites and apps, or consider staying in a budget-friendly hostel or Airbnb. If you’re willing to be flexible with your travel dates, you may be able to find even better deals.

Plan your itinerary

When planning your itinerary, look for free or low-cost activities, such as hiking, visiting public parks and museums, or attending local festivals or events. These can often be just as enjoyable as more expensive activities, and can even provide a more authentic cultural experience.

Plan your transportation as well

It’s also important to plan your transportation in advance. Look for discount passes or tickets for public transportation, and consider using rideshare services like Uber or Lyft instead of expensive taxis. Walking or biking can also be a great way to explore a new destination while saving money.

Have a backup plan

In addition to planning ahead, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case things don’t go as expected. Consider having an emergency fund or travel insurance to cover unexpected expenses, and keep important documents and contact information on hand in case of an emergency.

Overall, planning ahead can help you save money and make the most out of your budget-friendly solo travel experience. Don’t be afraid to get creative and find unique ways to save money while still having a memorable trip.

In conclusion, travelling solo can be an amazing experience, but it can also be expensive. However, by following these budget-friendly travel hacks, you can save money while still having an incredible travel experience. From choosing budget-friendly destinations to using public transportation and finding free activities, there are many ways to explore new places without breaking the bank.

So, go ahead and plan your next solo travel adventure with these tips in mind, and have a memorable trip without worrying about your budget.

Or, go old-school and traverse the country by train on The Ghan , where you can experience the outback on a journey from Adelaide to Darwin.

From the slopes of British Columbia to the cosmopolitan wonders of Toronto , Canada has tons to keep you entertained, even when you’re alone. Our neighbor to the north is a quick flight (or a reasonable drive depending on where you’re coming from and going to) and accessible in terms of language, exchange rate, and transportation.

If you opt for Canada's largest city, explore the arts and culture of Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre , eat your way through St. Lawrence Market , or get to know the city's eclectic range of neighborhoods. Over in Vancouver, you can bike your way through the waterfront city, or cross the vertigo-inducing Capilano Suspension Bridge , a 450-foot-long, 230-foot-high bridge cutting through lush woodland. Go straight to Alberta to explore Banff National Park ’s famous glacial lakes and Rocky Mountain vistas.

22. Thailand

Thailand has long been an affordable destination and, because of its safe, accessible atmosphere, it’s becoming just as popular with solo travelers. Explore the delicious food, thrilling nightlife, and tranquil spas of Bangkok. The tropical paradise also has beautiful beaches — we recommend those of Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands — for lounging the day away by the Andaman Sea.

Public transportation is easy and readily available, from trains, subways, buses, and taxis to long-tail boats and tuk-tuks. Head here in mid-April for the Songkran Water Splashing Festival to celebrate the Buddhist New Year with parades, street parties, and performances.

23. Croatia

If you’re feeling spontaneous, book a solo trip to Croatia, where you’ll be able to stretch your budget across spectacular beaches , rich history, and delectable cuisine. With a desirable exchange rate and friendly locals, this is perfect for any party of one. Become a beach bum on the unspoiled shores of the Dalmatian Islands. You’ll have the blue waters, white sands, and dramatic limestone cliffs to admire as you lounge by yourself. Then, eat your weight in white truffle pasta and fresh seafood before walking it off around Dubrovnik’s medieval Old Town.

Egypt is becoming more desirable for solo travel. A cruise down the Nile might be the best (not to mention safest and most convenient) way to see the African country alone. Eat delicious falafel in Cairo, explore the Great Pyramids in Giza, and discover ancient temples and tombs. And then return to your five-star accommodations before sailing off to the next archaeological wonder.

There are also new (or updated) sights to see in the ancient destination. In 2022, the Avenue of the Sphinxes in Luxor reopened after years of renovations. And, be on the lookout for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, which should open sometime in 2023.

25. England

Take solitary strolls along stunning cliffs, around quaint, small towns, or down urban streets in England. London is a natural choice for any Americans traveling across the pond. Traipse around Trafalgar Square , see the Rembrandts and Cézannes at the National Gallery , or enjoy a proper afternoon tea service at The Lanesborough .

But, of course, there are also the charming English towns that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. One of the best parts of traveling to England is the history and you’ll find plenty of that in its storybook castles and the industrial-age towns of Yorkshire.

Budget-Friendly Solo Travel in Europe: Your Ultimate Guide

Traveling solo in Europe can be a life-changing experience, but it can also be expensive. However, with proper planning and budgeting, it's possible to enjoy the continent without breaking the bank. In this article, we'll share some tips on how to solo travel Europe on a budget, including how to plan your trip, get around, find affordable accommodations, and more.

First, it's important to plan your trip carefully. Consider the time of year you'll be traveling, as peak season can be more expensive. Look for deals on flights and transportation, and consider using a rail pass to save money on train travel. Be flexible with your itinerary, as some destinations may be more expensive than others. Research free or low-cost activities and sights to see, and plan your budget accordingly.

When it comes to accommodations, there are many options for budget travelers. Hostels are a popular choice for solo travelers, as they offer affordable dorm-style rooms and a chance to meet other travelers. Airbnb and Couchsurfing are also great options for finding affordable lodging, and can give you a chance to experience local culture. Finally, consider camping or staying in a budget hotel to save money on accommodations.

Key Takeaways

  • Planning your trip carefully can help you save money while solo traveling in Europe.
  • Using a rail pass, staying in hostels or budget hotels, and researching free activities are all great ways to save money.
  • Be flexible with your itinerary and consider alternative accommodations like Airbnb or Couchsurfing to keep costs down.

Planning Your Trip

When planning your solo trip to Europe on a budget, it's important to do your research and set a realistic budget. Here are some tips to help you plan your trip:

Researching Destinations

Researching destinations is an important part of planning your trip. Consider visiting smaller cities and towns that are off the beaten path, as they tend to be less expensive than popular tourist destinations. Eastern Europe is also a great option for budget travelers, as it tends to be less expensive than Western Europe. Websites like Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor can be helpful for researching destinations and finding things to do.

Setting a Budget

Setting a budget is crucial when planning a trip to Europe. Determine how much money you can afford to spend on transportation, accommodations, food, and activities. Keep in mind that transportation costs can add up quickly, so consider purchasing a rail pass or booking budget flights with airlines like Ryanair or EasyJet. Use a debit card with no foreign transaction fees to avoid unnecessary charges.

Booking Flights and Transportation

When booking flights and transportation, consider traveling during the shoulder season or off-season to save money. Budget airlines like Norwegian and Ryanair offer affordable flights to many European destinations. If you plan to travel by train, consider purchasing a Eurail pass or booking individual train tickets in advance. Bus companies like FlixBus, Eurolines, and Megabus also offer affordable transportation options.

Choosing Accommodations

Accommodations can be a major expense when traveling, so consider staying in hostels, Airbnb rentals, or budget hotels. Hostels are a great option for solo travelers, as they offer affordable communal living spaces and the opportunity to meet other travelers. Airbnb rentals can also be a good option, as they often provide a local experience at a lower cost than hotels. When choosing accommodations, keep in mind the location and transportation options to save money on getting around.

Remember to keep valuables safe while traveling by using a money belt or storing them in a secure location. Also, consider dining at local restaurants and attending festivals to experience the culture without breaking the bank. By following these tips and doing your research, you can plan a successful solo trip to Europe on a budget.

Getting Around Europe

When it comes to getting around Europe on a budget, there are several affordable options to consider. Here are some of the most popular modes of transportation for budget-conscious solo travelers:

Train Travel

Europe is famous for its extensive rail network, and train travel is often the most convenient and comfortable way to get around the continent. If you plan on traveling to multiple countries, a Eurail pass can be a cost-effective option, offering unlimited train travel within a certain time frame. However, keep in mind that some trains require reservations, which can add to the overall cost.

Taking the bus is another affordable option for getting around Europe. Companies like FlixBus and Eurolines offer intercity bus services that can be much cheaper than train travel, especially for shorter distances. Megabus is another popular option, particularly in the UK. However, keep in mind that bus travel can be slower and less comfortable than train travel, and some routes may not be as frequent or convenient.

Budget Airlines

For longer distances or when time is a factor, budget airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, and Norwegian can offer significant savings compared to traditional airlines. However, keep in mind that budget airlines often charge for extras like checked baggage, seat selection, and onboard meals, which can add up quickly. Additionally, budget airlines may fly to secondary airports that are farther from city centers, which can add to transportation costs.

Overall, the best way to get around Europe on a budget will depend on your specific travel plans and preferences. Consider factors like transportation cost, travel time, and convenience when deciding which mode of transportation to use. With a little research and planning, you can save money while still enjoying all that Europe has to offer.

Accommodations

When it comes to solo traveling Europe on a budget, finding affordable accommodations is a top priority. Luckily, there are many options available that can fit any budget. Here are some of the most popular options:

Hostels are a great option for budget solo travelers. They offer shared dorm rooms or private rooms at affordable prices. Not only are hostels a great way to save money, but they also provide a social atmosphere where you can meet other travelers. Some popular hostel booking sites include Hostelworld, Booking.com, and Hostels.com.

While hotels can be more expensive than hostels, they can still be budget-friendly if you do your research. Look for hotels that offer deals or discounts for solo travelers, or consider staying in a hotel outside of the city center. Some popular hotel booking sites include Booking.com, Expedia, and Hotels.com.

Airbnb is a popular option for budget solo travelers who want more privacy than a hostel can offer. With Airbnb, you can rent a private room or an entire apartment for a fraction of the cost of a hotel. Plus, many hosts offer discounts for longer stays. Just be sure to read reviews and check the location before booking.

Apartment Rentals

Similar to Airbnb, apartment rentals offer a more private and home-like experience. You can rent an entire apartment or a room in a shared apartment. Apartment rentals can be a great option for solo travelers who plan to stay in one place for an extended period of time. Some popular apartment rental sites include Airbnb, HomeAway, and VRBO.

No matter which option you choose, be sure to book in advance to get the best deals. And don't be afraid to negotiate prices or ask for discounts, especially if you're staying for an extended period of time. With a little research and planning, you can find affordable accommodations that fit your budget and travel style.

When it comes to solo traveling in Europe on a budget, there are plenty of sightseeing and activity options to choose from. Here are some sub-sections that can help you plan your itinerary.

In Rome, you can visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum for free on the first Sunday of every month. The Vatican Museums are also free to enter on the last Sunday of every month.

Many cities also offer wine tastings, which can be a fun and affordable way to learn about the local wine culture.

If you do decide to enjoy a glass of wine at a restaurant, look for house wines or wines by the glass, which are often more affordable than ordering a full bottle. Another tip is to order a carafe of wine to share with your dining companion, which can be a great way to sample local varieties without breaking the bank.

Europe is also known for its nightlife, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy a night out without spending a lot of money. Look for local pubs and bars, which often offer affordable drink specials and live music. Many cities also offer free concerts and events, which can be a great way to experience the local culture without spending a lot of money.

1. Join a Walking Tour

I’ve yet to visit a good European city that didn’t have a walking tour to join, and usually, they’re free. (Big score for budget backpackers.)

A person walking down a street in Rome, Italy

Occasionally, they can be a drag, but I’ve found that if you book them through your hostel, the guides are usually enthusiastic while being equally informational. And best of all, you’ll be joined by other travelers making it one of the best ways to make friends .

You’ll spend the morning getting a feel for the city, and I love doing this on my first day in a new place because the guides can give you some local tips on all the best places to eat, drink, and party. You’ll see all the must-do’s and have a good idea of how to get around the place.

2. Check off Iconic Landmarks

Whether you’re checking off the world’s wonders or just want to drink some wine under the Eiffel Tower, Europe is the perfect destination for travellers who love sightseeing. The continent is full of some of the world’s most iconic landmarks and will definitely keep you busy. (Get ready to be walking 20,000+ steps a day!)

Looking out over the entire colosseum of Rome from a vantage point, Rome, Italy

Travelling solo allows you to go to the ones that are high on your list without having to worry about someone else’s schedule. Plus, you can take as many pictures and selfies as your heart desires without being judged!

3. Go on a Pub Crawl

If you’re staying at a hostel , more often than not, someone will be hosting a pub crawl. And let me tell you, Europeans do it differently. There is a high possibility you’ll be out all night long and an even higher possibility of having an epic adventure through the city.

Get drunk Dublin style on a backpacker-friendly pub crawl

Since they’re organised through the hostels, you’ll be around other travellers about your age, and it’s the perfect way to loosen up and meet other people. Entry into the clubs and bars is usually free, and you might get a shitty shot of absinthe or bottom-shelf liquor on the house.

(If you’re on a budget, drink up. If hangovers are the bain of your existence… well, buy something else. Ha!)

4. Take a Cooking Class

Some of the world’s best food comes out of Europe (and some of the worst, I’m looking at you, beans and toast). And while it might not be in your budget to eat out for every meal, taking a cooking class is one of the best ways to experience local culture and flavours.

solo travel on a budget

Sometimes, you’ll get to go shopping at the local market or step into an old grandma’s home that smells like freshly baked bread. Not only will you learn how to make delicious dishes, but you’ll also get a glimpse into the daily life of locals. It’s one of my favourite ways to meet other travellers who are interested in the same things as me.

5. Eat at Local Spots

I can’t recommend eating at local spots enough. I know it can be difficult to break out of your comfort zone and dine alone, but after a few times, it’ll grow on you.

Two very exciting travelled about to try Seafood Paella in Spain

I’ve come to love heading out to a local spot and getting to interact with the staff and other guests, grabbing some food. Trust me, they can tell you’re a tourist. And for the most part, they will be super kind and help you if you’re confused about the menu or any other customs you aren’t familiar with.

Plus, eating at local spots is typically much cheaper than eating at tourist hotspots. You’ll also get to taste authentic dishes that are so freaking delicious you’ll be dreaming of them for ages.

6. Get Lost in the World’s Best Museums

Museums are the perfect way for solo travellers to spend their day. And the ones in Europe are the BEST.

Van Gogh Museum

I seriously don’t think it gets better than the Louvre , the British Museum , or the Rijksmuseum . Not only are they a treasure trove of historical and cultural artefacts, but you also get to explore at your own pace and take in all the beauty without feeling rushed.

7. Attend a Music Festival

If you love music, then you’ve come to the right place. Europe is home to some of the best festivals in the world . I don’t know what it is or why they’re so much better than the rest of the world but prepare for the best vibes and the best shows (and the best drugs, if you’re trying to turn up.)

wireless festival london

I’ve definitely planned a solo trip to Europe solely around Tomorrowland, and it was one of my best travel experiences ever. Just make sure to research the festival beforehand and plan accordingly because some tickets sell out super fast.

And don’t be afraid of going alone. You’ll meet loads of other travellers and locals. Plus, it’s a music festival, so everyone is there to have a good time.

Aether Backpack

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

With 44 countries and hundreds of cities, how on earth are you supposed to choose where to go ? Even with all the money in the world, there is just no way to hit all of the European destinations.

I know. I find it tragic as well.

But there are a few places that are just better suited for solo travellers in Europe, and here they are! The top 5 solo destinations in Europe.

Prague is a backpacker haven, making it the perfect destination in Europe for solo travellers. If you go to Prague and don’t make any friends… well, maybe the problem is you.

Ha, just kidding. But seriously, the city has always been known for its amazing nightlife, cheap eats and drinks, and friendly locals.

Looking out over the river from the Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic

The city is absolutely gorgeous, and whether you’re planning to stay in Prague in the summer or the winter, the city’s charm is breathtaking. You’ll find a little bit of everything while visiting the city, you can learn about the history on a walking tour (I recommend the ones in the old town.)

Getting lost in the cobblestone streets is like a medieval fairytale. The Museum of Communism is also a great activity for solo travellers, as you’ll get to learn about a really interesting part of history, and you can even join a tour if you want to meet people.

Fun fact: Prague is also one of the safest cities in Europe, making it the perfect destination for solo female travelers .

The Prague Dream Hostel is one of my favourite stays in the city. It’s super warm and cosy in the common areas, so meeting friends is a breeze. It’s also located about a 20-minute walk from the old town, which is perfect for exploring on your own.

History, culture, and nightlife collide in Berlin, making it a must-visit for solo travellers in Europe. Berlin was the first European city I ever visited, and I’m not sure that was the smartest idea, but it definitely prepared me for all the cities I would visit after it.

As someone who grew up quite sheltered, the nightlife in Berlin had its way with me. It was a hell of a time. And if you’re into the techno scene, my god, you’re about to have the time of your life.

But Berlin has so much more to offer than just its party scene. The city is filled with museums, galleries, and historic sites that are a must-see for any solo traveller interested in culture and history.

One of my favourite things to do in Berlin was biking around the city, admiring the street art and architecture. Joining some sort of tour, whether it be biking or walking, is a must. While walking alone is fine, hearing the stories and learning more about the city and the war really adds to the experience.

If you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodation in Berlin, I highly recommend checking out the Circus Hostel . It’s located in a great area with plenty of restaurants and bars nearby, and they offer a variety of room options, including dorms and privates. Plus, they host events like pub crawls and walking tours making it easy to meet other travelers.

Everyone dreams of visiting Amsterdam on their European tour, and for good reason. The city is one of the coolest and most progressive destinations in Europe, making it perfect for solo travellers.

The best way to explore Amsterdam is by bike. There is some crazy statistic that there are more bikes than people, and after visiting—I believe it.

And one of my favourite things about visiting Amsterdam is literally everyone speaks English. So if you’re feeling a bit paranoid about being able to communicate, well, Amsterdam is the perfect choice for you.

Sign on a bridge in Amsterdam warning of a fine for urinating in public.

Just prepare for the bluntness. They don’t mean to be rude—they’re just honest.

Unfortunately, loads of expats have moved to the city, pushing out a lot of the Dutchies. And in the summer, it’s pretty much a melting pot of travellers. This is sad because you miss out on a lot of the local culture that made Amsterdam so unique to begin with.

But it’s still an epic destination in Europe, and make sure to stay at Flying Pig Downtown . The staff are amazing. And with all of the awesome common areas, you can hang out, drink a beer, smoke some green, and meet some other travellers.

For so long, Portugal was flying under the radar, and then, what seemed like out of nowhere, it became everyone’s go-to destination in Europe. And they weren’t wrong.

Travelling to Portugal is awesome just about any time of year, and Lisbon is one of the best cities for solo travellers. Unless you don’t like hills… because Lisbon is all hills.

The city has a chill vibe with lots of street art, great food, and plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travellers. Head to the famous Time Out Market for some food and drinks, or take a free walking tour to learn about the history and culture. You can also do some pretty sick day trips from Lisbon like visiting the beautiful beaches of Cascais or the gorgeous castles of Sintra.

If you’re looking for a party place, stay at Yes! Lisbon . This hostel is full of social butterflies, and they put on one heck of a bar crawl every few nights.

Barcelona is one of the most iconic cities in all of Europe, so obviously, it landed a spot on this list. You can visit the ever-unfinished Sagrada Familia or roam the charming streets of the Gothic Quarter.

Barcelona is also known for its delicious food scene and buzzing nightlife. And if you’re into beaches, there are plenty of those too!

A person sitting on the beach at Barceloneta in Barcelona, Spain

Although Barcelona isn’t exactly the cheapest place in Europe, there is lots of opportunity here to bring the costs down. You’ll find cheap flights here from many corners of the world and public transport is easy-peasy.

Barcelona is every solo traveller’s dream come true. I don’t know if it’s because of the weather or the blunt locals (well, most of them have moved to Barcelona, but we will still call them locals), but it’s just so easy to make friends here.

Every morning, you’ll find the cafes full of people enjoying breakfast and a chat, and every night, the streets are packed with young people grabbing dinner on their way out to explore the nightlife. And from what I experienced, just about every night you can party.

My favorite hostel was Onefam Paralelo . Every night, they have a family dinner, making it easy to meet other guests, and typically, everyone goes out together after.

Here are a handful of my favourite travel apps that helped me backpack through Europe immensely. Having these apps in your arsenal will give you superpowers. Trust me.

  • Google Maps – Do I need to explain this one?
  • Booking.com – Easily the best app for accommodation.
  • Hostelworld – This app is perfect for finding the best hostels in Europe .
  • Google Translate – Such an easy way to speak every language.
  • Couchsurfing – Backpacking Europe isn’t always the cheapest, and downloading the couch surfing app will help you save some money and meet locals.
  • Interrail Planner App – If you’re planning on travelling by train in Europe , this app will be your best friend. It helps you plan out your route, shows you the different train options and schedules, and even lets you book tickets.
  • Flixbus – But if you plan to travel by bus to save some money, Flixbus is a great option. Their app makes it easy to book tickets and navigate different routes.
  • Rick Stevens Audio Europe – This audio guide app offers guided walking tours in different European cities. You’ll get insider tips and historical background information while exploring independently.
  • Holafly – An e-SIM application that allows you to download a data-only SIM card without installing a physical card.

Facebook groups are also a great shout for solo backpackers, and so is the Hostelworld chat for your location. My best tip though? Get off yo’ phone and go chat to people!

photo of a person holding a smartphone with Holafly logo

Stop stressing about your phone service when you travel abroad.

Holafly is a digital SIM card that works smoothly like an app — you simply pick your plan, download it, and voilà!

Roam around Europe, but leave the roaming charges for the n00bies.

So this is where it gets tricky lumping all of Europe together into safety tips. Each country definitely varies when it comes to levels of crime. So make sure to look up the countries you’re headed to before and do some research on their travel warnings. With that said, here are a few tips to help keep you safe while exploring solo in Europe.

Pickpockets are in just about every city, so just be smart about your belongings. Don’t wear fancy jewellery. Zip your bags and keep them in front of you, and maybe even get a necklace thing for your phone to make sure it doesn’t get snatched.

Ice Climbing in Iceland

If you’re going out or bar hopping, don’t get hammered. I know it feels a bit like a theme park as you travel from city to city. But you aren’t untouchable, and creeps exist everywhere.

So don’t drink too much. If you are a female solo traveller, try to go with a group of friends and don’t wander off alone. Like anywhere, Europe is safe to travel alone but you must keep your wits about you.

If this is your first big solo trip, don’t worry, these tips will help you have a killer time in Europe and could also save your ass.

Woman stood smiling next to Hogwarts Express train

  • Travel light , and pick a trusty backpack over a rolling suitcase.
  • Book hostels . It’s the BEST way to travel solo. You’ll meet awesome people and they’re often nicer than hotels.
  • If you’re travelling on a tight budget , you can get cheap transport tickets if you book in advance .
  • Free walking tours are a must ! They’re a great way to meet people and explore the local areas and, well, they’re free!
  • Leave your heels at home . Good travel shoes are essential.
  • Always have some Euros on hand. Cash is still king.
  • Don’t just visit cities … please. Countries are more than just their tourist hotspots and Instagram-famous locations.
  • With that being said— do the touristy things . There is a reason everyone loves going to the Eiffel Tower or seeing the Colosseum. Don’t leave wanting more.
  • Get European travel insurance . You never know what can happen, and we want you safe, not hundreds of dollars in debt and unable to get home safely.

My final tip would be to just go for it and also to go with the flow. Nothing ever unfolds exactly how you imagined it, but this is the beauty of travel. We love the mystery of surprises, don’t we?

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

solo travel on a budget

SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Click the button below to learn more about SafetyWing’s setup or read our insider review for the full tasty scoop.

All that’s left to say is get ready for a trip of a lifetime. My first solo trip to Europe was more than I could have ever imagined, from getting kicked out of a club in Barcelona to jumping on the back of a Vespa to ride around Rome with a stranger. Travelling solo brings opportunities to your front door that you would never even think possible.

Not that getting kicked out of the club was fun, but it definitely makes for a great story to tell. And you’re about to have all of that and more. You’ll learn more about yourself and honestly see more churches than you ever need to in your whole life—but, hey, that’s Europe.

So regardless if you’re visiting one country or are on an epic solo backpacking journey through Europe, you’re about to eat, dance, and live your life to the fullest. So double-check your travel packing list , and get ready to say hola, merci, ciao, and cheers as you embark on your solo adventure in Europe.

As a solo traveler, it’s essential to stay safe and travel smart. Trust your instincts, secure your belongings, and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Going off the beaten path in Belize, you’ll find stunning beaches that are less crowded and perfect for relaxation. Explore remote islands like Tobacco Caye or visit lesser-known coastal towns like Hopkins.

Safety and Solo Travel in Belize

Belize is generally a safe country for solo female travelers, but it’s essential to exercise caution, especially in Belize City.

Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable solo adventure in Belize:

  • Stay in well-traveled areas: Opt for accommodations and activities that are popular among tourists. This not only provides a safer environment but also increases the chances of meeting other like-minded travelers.
  • Use reliable transportation services: Stick to reputable taxi companies or buses. Avoid hitchhiking or accepting rides from strangers to minimize the risk of potential dangers.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings: Always be mindful, especially when walking alone or exploring unfamiliar areas. Trust your instincts and avoid isolated places, particularly during nighttime.

Connecting with Locals and Fellow Travelers

Connecting with locals and fellow travelers in Belize can enhance your travel experience and provide valuable insights into the culture and hidden gems of the country. As a solo traveler, it’s essential to take steps to connect with others while still maintaining your safety.

One way to do this is by staying in hostels, where you can meet other like-minded travelers and potentially find travel companions for day trips or longer adventures.

Another way is to participate in community activities or events, such as local festivals or volunteer opportunities. Additionally, learning basic phrases in the local language can help you communicate with locals and make meaningful connections.

It’s also a good idea to share your itinerary with someone back home and keep in touch regularly.

Lastly, stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times, blend in with the local culture as much as possible, and always have backup copies of essential documents such as your passport and travel insurance.

Practical Tips for Solo Travel in Belize

When traveling alone in Belize, it’s crucial to stay informed about safety precautions and use reliable transportation services.

Here are some practical tips for solo travel in Belize:

  • Plan your arrival: Arriving at the Belize International Airport is the most common way to visit Belize. From there, you can take a taxi or arrange a shuttle service to your accommodation.
  • Stay connected: Purchase a local SIM card or consider getting an international data plan to stay connected with family and friends back home.
  • Make friends: Solo travel doesn’t mean you have to be alone all the time. Engage with fellow travelers and locals by joining group tours, staying in social hostels, or attending events and activities where you can meet like-minded individuals.

Best Time to Visit Belize

To make the most of your trip, consider visiting Belize during the winter for the high season or during the summer for fewer crowds and cheaper hotels.

As a solo traveler, I found that Belize offers something for everyone. From exploring ancient Mayan ruins to diving and snorkeling in the stunning Belize Barrier Reef, there is no shortage of adventure here.

Traveling alone in Belize is perfectly safe, and you can easily get around by bus to experience the best of what this country has to offer.

Solo Female Travel in Belize

If you’re a female traveler venturing to Belize alone, it’s essential to know that street harassment can be significant, especially on the islands and beaches. However, don’t let this discourage you from experiencing the beauty and adventure of this amazing country.

As a woman traveling alone, I have found ways to navigate Belize safely and enjoyably.

Here are some tips for solo female travel in Belize:

  • Stay in well-populated areas: Choose accommodations in popular tourist spots with plenty of people.
  • Dress modestly: While it’s tempting to wear swimwear all day on the beach, consider covering up when walking around town to avoid unwanted attention.
  • Trust your instincts: If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, remove yourself immediately.

Budget-Friendly Solo Travel

If you’re looking to explore Belize on a budget, there are plenty of affordable options for solo travelers like you. As a solo explorer, I’ve found that Belize offers a range of budget-friendly accommodations, from hostels to resorts.

You can also enjoy delicious and affordable local street food while exploring this beautiful country. To maximize your budget, consider joining solo tours or cruises catering to individuals traveling alone.

With careful planning and a sense of adventure, you can have a unique budget-friendly solo travel experience in Belize as a digital nomad or simply as someone seeking freedom and exploration.

Cultural Immersion and Activities

When exploring Belize, immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture by partaking in activities such as trying traditional cuisine, learning about the diverse ethnic groups, and engaging with friendly Belizeans.

Here are three ways to fully embrace cultural immersion during your solo retreat in Belize:

Despite its reputation for street harassment, Belize is generally considered a safe destination for solo travelers.

As someone who loves traveling alone, I can confidently say that Belize is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultures in Central America.

From the stunning Belize coast to ancient Maya ruins, this place has something for every adventurous soul. And don’t forget to take a trip to Guatemala with Maya Island Air!

While street harassment can be an issue, it’s essential to stay focused and use common sense while exploring. Engaging with English-speaking locals will give you valuable insights into the best places to visit.

Meet Fellow Travelers and Locals

Engaging with fellow tourists and exchanging itineraries can be a great way to meet fellow travelers and locals in Belize. When traveling alone, it’s essential to connect with others who share the same sense of adventure.

Here are three reasons why meeting fellow travelers and locals is a must when going solo in Belize:

  • Make Lifelong Connections: Meeting new people from different backgrounds enriches your travel experience. You can form friendships long after your trip ends, creating a global network of like-minded individuals with a passion for exploration.
  • Gain Local Insights: Interacting with locals allows you to immerse yourself in the unique culture of Belize. They can offer valuable advice on where to go, what to see, and how to navigate the country safely.

Use Common Sense and Travel Insurance

To ensure your safety and protect yourself from unexpected incidents, it’s important to use common sense and have travel insurance when exploring Belize.

Solo travel in Belize can be an incredible adventure, but it’s essential to take precautions. Use your instincts and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Choose reputable accommodations and transportation options, and avoid isolated areas, especially at night.

Additionally, having travel insurance is crucial in case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances. It provides peace of mind knowing that you are financially protected if anything goes wrong during your trip.

Whether it’s a medical emergency or lost luggage, travel insurance can save you from unnecessary stress and expenses.

Solo travel in Belize is an adventure that will leave you breathless.

From the stunning beauty of the Belize Barrier Reef to the thrill of exploring ancient ruins, this country offers endless opportunities for exploration.

Why we chose it : Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling and affordable city that offers a wide range of attractions for solo travelers, from inexpensive food and accommodations to an abundance of cultural and historical sites.

Visiting Ho Chi Minh City has become something of a bucket-list item for many backpackers. Its vibrant culture, friendly people and amazing food attract millions of tourists annually. And it’s also one of Vietnam’s safest cities .

Try some of the mouth-watering street food available in pretty much every corner of the city (especially Districts 1, 3 and 5), do some shopping at the Ben Thanh Market, visit the Notre Dame Cathedral or book a tour of the Mekong Delta to learn more about the local flora and fauna.

Getting around is also pretty easy, with many transportation options, from the new metro to buses, taxis and motorbikes. However, one thing to keep in mind is that U.S. citizens need to apply for a Visa before they can be granted entry into Vietnam.

Best for solo female travelers: Montreal, Canada

  • Very safe and walkable city
  • Visitors can stay for up to six months without a Visa
  • Toronto is only five hours away by direct train
  • Not a great option for budget travelers
  • The winter weather can be harsh

Why we chose it : Montreal is one of the safest cities in Canada, and it is only a short flight away for travelers from the U.S. The city has a vibrant art scene, a diverse population and plenty of old-world charm with its mix of classic and modern architecture.

Traveling solo as a woman might cause your loved ones some anxiety. But Montreal is a great place for women to travel alone. The city is safe and offers much to do, from beautiful architecture, such as Notre-Dame Basilica, to artisanal shopping in Old Montreal. And while the population is predominantly French-speaking, many residents also speak English, so you should have no problem communicating.

Visitors from the United States can stay in Montreal for up to six months without a visa. It’s also a good point of departure for exploring the rest of Canada. Trains depart for Toronto several times a day, and the trip is about five hours.

Accommodations in Montreal can be more expensive than in other international destinations, but enrolling in the best hotel rewards programs may help.

Best for going on solo travel tours: Chicago, Illinois

  • You can find many different types of guided tours
  • Has an excellent public transportation system
  • One of the best culinary destinations in the U.S.
  • Weather can be unpleasant if you visit at the wrong time

Why we chose it : Chicago is home to some of the best travel tours in the country. From river cruises to walking food and drink excursions, you’ll have no problem filling your time in the Windy City.

Chicago is one of the best places to travel in the U.S. It’s home to a wide variety of guided tours, covering everything from the city’s mob history to its architecture and natural landmarks. And if you love Chicago dogs or deep-dish pizza, you can take a walking food tour to enjoy some of the city’s best restaurants in a single day.

Chicago is also home to inspiring architecture, such as Willis Tower and Cloud Gate in Millennium Park. The city is a more affordable place to visit than other U.S. cities of its size, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. And if you visit in summer, you’ll have perfect weather for relaxing on the beaches of Lake Michigan, located in the heart of the city.

Depending on what you’re looking for, visiting the city between May and October could be your best bet, as winters can be very cold, with average temperatures ranging between 22 F and 37 F.

Best budget solo travel destination: Ljubljana, Slovenia

  • A highly affordable travel destination
  • Easy entrance requirements for U.S. citizens
  • Classic European architecture and dining options
  • Plenty of green spaces to lounge and relax
  • Doesn't have a strong nightlife culture
  • Crowds can be overwhelming during peak travel seasons

Why we chose it : Slovenia is one of the most affordable European countries, and Ljubljana is one of the country’s most beautiful destinations. It’s home to classic European cobblestone streets and its stunning architecture and exhibits can keep you busy for weeks without breaking your budget.

Ljubljana is an affordable European destination with beautiful green spaces and incredible architecture, including the Ljubljana Castle and the Robba Fountain. It’s also highly walkable and pedestrian-friendly, as car traffic is banned in the city center.

Hotels are cheaper here than in more popular destinations such as France or Italy, which is a big reason why Ljubljana is one of the best international places to travel . There are also many great affordable restaurants and open-air cafes.

U.S. citizens can remain in Slovenia for up to 90 days without a visa, making it easy to extend their stay with the money they save.

However, Ljubljana is not known for its nightlife, as many bars close earlier than elsewhere in Europe. Plus, it has become more popular in recent years, and crowds are abundant during peak seasons, especially the summer.

Other places to travel solo we considered

We compiled our list of the best places to travel alone by evaluating global destinations based on safety, affordability, cultural and historical sites and convenience, among other factors.

Although the following destinations didn’t make it into our top list, they’re still worth considering as you plan your travels.

Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Close to beautiful natural landmarks
  • It's possible to see the Northern Lights when conditions allow
  • Home to many museums and several Michelin-starred restaurants
  • More expensive than other popular travel destinations
  • The region's weather can be bleak
  • Long periods of darkness and sunlight can interfere with your sleep schedule

Reykjavik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with stunning mountains and beaches everywhere you look. However, it’s an expensive destination and experiences prolonged periods of darkness and sunlight that may be difficult to adjust to.

  • Some of the best food in South America
  • Miles of beautiful coastline to explore
  • Friendly locals - many of whom speak at least some English
  • Travelers can suffer from altitude sickness in some popular attractions
  • The city is sprawling, which can increase travel times and make traffic worse

Lima is a beautiful South American destination with picturesque beaches and affordable accommodations. It’s also a foodie’s dream, with a wide variety of tasty local and international restaurants available at budget-friendly prices.

Just remember that traffic congestions are common and can make it hard to get around. Additionally, some travelers may experience altitude sickness in high-altitude locations like Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Knoxville, Tennessee

  • Has beautiful outdoor settings
  • Minimal traffic
  • Moderate prices for accommodations
  • There isn't as much to do in Knoxville as in other travel destinations
  • Public transportation options are limited

Knoxville is the third-largest city in Tennessee, but it maintains a small-town feel. It’s home to beautiful attractions, such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the World’s Fair Park, and has enough cultural exhibits and museums to keep you busy.

Nevertheless, there isn’t quite as much to do here as in other cities, and public transportation is comparatively limited.

Places to Travel Solo Guide

Traveling alone can be intimidating, but a little preparation can go a long way. This guide covers some of the best travel tips to help you plan your next solo trip.

Why travel solo?

As with everything, there are pros and cons to traveling alone.

Some of the benefits of solo travel include:

  • The ability to plan trips according to your schedule
  • Paying less for dining and experiences
  • Stepping out of your comfort zone and getting to know yourself better
  • Having more time to reflect and relax in peace

Of course, to enjoy your solo vacation to the fullest, practice general safety precautions. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, do some proper research before visiting new places and consider hiring a guide if you’re doing outdoor activities in remote locations.

How to travel alone

Traveling alone can be a wonderful experience. But it often requires more planning and initiative than group trips. The following tips for traveling alone should help you make the most of your next solo trip.

Research your travel destination extensively

The more research you do before visiting a destination, the more prepared you will be to enjoy it. Pay close attention to the following:

  • Climate : Be aware of the weather conditions at your destination to avoid potential hazards, pack the right gear and plan appropriate activities.
  • Top attractions : Plan your itinerary by mapping out the attractions you want to visit and checking their distance from your accommodations. This will help you create a realistic schedule and determine if you need to book transportation for any day trips.
  • Cost : Consider the average cost of accommodations, meals and attractions to create a realistic budget.
  • Public transportation : This is an important consideration, as visiting a destination with insufficient or unreliable public transportation translates into additional expenses.
  • Language barrier : Consider downloading translation apps or learning basic phrases in your destination’s native language if English isn’t widely spoken there.
  • Food : If you have any dietary restrictions, check the availability of suitable food options at your destination and plan your meals.

Stay connected with your friends and family

When traveling alone, keep your loved ones informed of where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing. That way, your family can call for help if they don’t hear back from you in a reasonable timeframe.

Depending on your destination, you may consider purchasing an international SIM card or an international phone plan with your existing carrier to text and call your people back home.

Finally, you can register your trip with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) through the U.S. State Department. STEP is a free service that allows you to receive automatic safety and travel updates from the U.S. embassy in the country you’re visiting. It also makes it easier for friends and family to reach you in an emergency.

Consider travel insurance

If you’ve spent quite a bit of money on non-refundable travel expenses and it hasn’t been that long since you made your initial trip deposit, consider travel insurance to safeguard your investment. A travel insurance policy can help you recoup a portion of pre-paid travel expenses if you cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.

Travel medical insurance could also be worthwhile if you’re going on an extended trip, as it would cover some of your medical expenses in an emergency, including medical evacuation and repatriation. And some plans even include additional services like language support, which could be helpful if English isn’t widely spoken where you’re visiting.

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, check out our guide to the best travel insurance companies .

Try new things

Now that we’ve covered some of the most important things to do before leaving for a solo trip, let’s explore how to get as much enjoyment out of your travels as possible while you’re there. The best advice we can give you is to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.

If you genuinely want to experience everything other cultures have to offer, you can’t spend your days doing the same things you do at home. So take a chance and live as the locals do. You’ll be happy you did.

Interact with the locals

The best way to forget you’re traveling alone is to befriend the locals. Your new friends can keep you company, guide you to the best places in town (the ones that aren’t in any tourist guides) and help to make your trip more enjoyable overall.

Meeting locals is much easier to do now than before the Internet. A wide variety of online resources can connect you to local events and groups where you can meet people. Some of the best options for this include:

  • Facebook expat groups for the destination you’re visiting
  • The subreddit for your destination (such as r/Paris and r/Chicago)

Some professional and religious groups may have international meetups as well. This can be a fantastic way to meet locals with whom you already have something in common.

Take plenty of pictures (with you in them)

Last but not least, make sure you take plenty of pictures to share with your people back home. Landmarks can be great, but you should also be in some of the photos. Most people will happily snap pictures of you if you ask nicely.

What to do when traveling alone

Traveling alone can be one of the best experiences of your life or a challenge that quickly loses its appeal. To give yourself the best chance of having an ideal trip, remember the following strategies during your travels:

  • Be flexible : Flexibility is a must for solo travelers. You’ll have more fun if you take advantage of chance encounters and throw away your schedule when necessary.
  • Take group tours and classes : Just because you arrive at your destination alone doesn’t mean you must spend every minute there alone. Group tours and classes will help you meet people and give you a chance to socialize when you’re feeling lonely.
  • Stay in places that encourage talking : If you’re concerned about feeling lonely, consider staying at a hostel or bed and breakfast. Shared accommodations like these are more affordable than the best hotels and can be a great way to meet people.
  • Gather first-hand advice : You can use Reddit and other resources to read about the experiences other solo travelers have had at your destination. These firsthand accounts can alert you to problems you may not have considered otherwise and new opportunities for fun.
  • Sign up for free rewards programs : Airlines , hotel chains and third-party booking sites often have reward programs that help you save money if you’re a frequent traveler. You may also want to look into the best airline credit cards and best travel credit cards if you plan on traveling alone regularly.
  • Prioritize your safety : Traveling alone can make you a target, so prioritizing safety is important. Be proactive about telling others where you’ll be and take yourself out of situations you feel unsure about to enjoy your trip without incident.

Staying safe is a critical consideration for solo travelers. One way to do that is by avoiding reckless behavior, such as drinking excessively and venturing alone into places locals deem unsafe.

Take the time to thoroughly research your destination, share your travel plans with friends and family and prepare an emergency plan.

Finally, consider travel insurance. If something does happen while you’re traveling alone, it will provide financial support so you can go to the hospital without worrying about breaking your budget.

You could save up enough money to make the cost of travel insurance negligible by signing up for one of the best airline rewards programs .

Elise Shapiro

Elise, an IT training specialist from Seattle in Washington, decided to travel abroad on a solo adventure after her husband and friends weren’t able to come along. This is what she had to say:

“I have taken a year off to travel and found that Scotland is a great country for solo travel. People are kind and friendly and public transportation has been easy to figure out. I was taking the city bus in Edinburgh on my second day in Scotland. I’ve scheduled time on group tours as well as alone, so I can meet people and make new friends, but I can also have downtime by myself.”

“Scotland is an easy country for solo travelers. From the botanical gardens, castles and cathedrals to the museums and great restaurants, there’s tons to do, no matter what you are interested in.”

Brieuc is a French Content Translator at VisitScotland who recently travelled by train to experience the magic of the far north of Scotland and then write all about his epic solo journey.

“I couldn’t take my eyes off the window as we passed the heather-clad hillsides facing the coastline of Sutherland, up to the fishing town of Helmsdale. I was amazed at the number of stops on the line; for such a sparsely populated area, it is remarkably well-connected.”

Brieuc also decided to embark on a guided tour to explore some of the most northern stretches of mainland Scotland.

“Because I’m lucky enough to call Scotland my home, it was my first experience of a guided tour in Scotland and, I must say, I couldn’t have hoped for a better guide! I tried to test his (the tour guide) knowledge on a few occasions and was impressed by the depth of knowledge and passion with which he delivered his stories."

Heading out on a guided tour or speaking with a knowledgeable tour guide are great ways to explore a brand-new place. You can get the insider scoop on the destination and find new recommendations or hidden gems to add to your itinerary, all in the company of a friendly face. Emma Chalmers is a guide with tour company Mary’s Meanders , who specialize in Outlander experiences.

“Since we started offering Outlander Tours, we have frequently hosted solo travellers. They have increased slightly since the pandemic but what is interesting is that they now say things like “I got tired of waiting for my friends/family members to commit and decided to just go for it”, “just because my husband doesn’t want to travel doesn’t mean I can’t”.

Emma also commented: “We have a hand holding approach, we offer zoom calls in advance of the guest booking, we are happy to answer any type of question about little things that might be worrying them. It is all about building their confidence if needed.”

Street harassment and theft are rare, as is the potential for picking up any diseases or infections. And we not only have very friendly and helpful locals, but there’s provision of excellent public services too. Just be sure to apply common sense, such as if you are sampling Scotland’s lively and diverse nightlife.

Some useful information:

  • Walkhighlands offer great safety advice for the outdoors if you're walking alone rather than in a guided group, as weather in Scotland can be very changeable (all part of Scotland’s unique and photogenic charm of course!).

Scotland's seasons

Solo Travel Paris on a Budget: Great Wallet-friendly Options

Janice Waugh

March 28, 2024 by Janice Waugh

solo travel on a budget

No matter what list you check, Paris is one of the top three city destinations in the world. Unfortunately, it's an expensive destination as well. But there are ways to solo travel Paris on a budget. Vraiment!

In fact, absorbing the vibe of Paris is quite cheap. A coffee and croissant on a sidewalk patio costs almost nothing yet it gives you a very typical Parisian perspective on the city. There are ways to see the highlights and experience le vrai Paris on a budget. Below are our best tips.

When planning your trip to Paris you may also want to head over to London. If this is the case, check out our  Solo Travel London on a Budget post .

Bear in mind that the city is scheduled to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games from late July to early September, 2024. For travelers, this will impact pricing, availability, transportation, and more.

Free Things To Do In Paris

  • My ultimate budget Paris tip.  Paris Greeters are locals who love their city and want to share it with tourists. You're best to book your Paris Greeter online and in advance. This link will give you a sense of the experience:  Friendly Paris: Exploring the Real Paris with a Greeter . When you travel solo to Paris on a budget, this is a great option not just financially, but for the personal connection with a local.
  • Free walking tours. There are numerous free, guided walking tours, including Discover Walks and  Sandeman's . Don't forget to tip your tour guide as they are not paid for the tour.
  • The Celebrity Cemeteries. The  Cimitière du Père Lachaise and  Cimitière du Montparnasse  are both the final resting places of intellectuals, artists, and philosophers. You'll find the graves of Jim Morrison of The Doors and Chopin at Pere Lachaise, and Charles Baudelaire and Samuel Beckett in Montparnasse. Both cemeteries deserve a stroll in good weather or bad.
  • Nuit Blanche was originally conceived in Paris, France in 2002, in an attempt to bring contemporary art to the masses in public spaces. It's free. Nuit Blanche is now held in early June.
  • La Fête de la Musique . In the spring, attend La Fête de la Musique in Paris and throughout France. Held on June 21st, it is a day everyone takes to the streets for music .
  • Tunnel des Tuileries is a tunnel parallel to the Seine at the Quai des Tuileries close to the Louvre that is for pedestrians and bicycles only. Ten European street artists were invited to create vast frescoes along its 800 meters that will be visible at least until this summer, when it will close to prepare for the Olympics.
  • Explore the inspiration for New York City's High Line . “Whether you call it the Promenade Plantée, the old Vincennes railway line, the aqueduct walk, the Coulée verte René-Dumont, or la Coulée verte, this 4.7 km/2.9 mile path is the world’s first elevated park, a lush, green artery from the heart of Paris to its edges,” says solo traveler, Prue. Read more about her experience visiting this park built on an old railway line in Solo Travel Destination: La Coulée Verte, Paris .
  • Visit Shakespeare & Company . This is a store with an interesting history . It is actually the second store with the same name. The first was famously frequented by James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and Ernest Hemingway. It closed in 1941 during the Nazi occupation of Paris. The second Shakespeare & Company opened in 1951. Located on the left bank quite near Notre Dame, it is worth visiting for its selection of new and used English language books, its place in literary history, and the events it holds regularly. It was featured in the films  Before Sunset and Midnight in Paris .
  • Wander the arrondissements . Each arrondissement has a unique flavor and lots to offer. It's up to you which you'd like to visit. Check out this Complete Guide to Paris' 20 Arrondissements from Fodors.
  • Gaze at art . The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris offers free admission to its permanent collections. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays.
  • An alternative to the Eiffel Tower . Go to the Printemps department store, take the elevator as high as it goes then the escalators further up to the rooftop Terrasse , where you can sit free of charge during the store's opening hours, with Paris at your feet. If you like, you can enjoy a coffee or food while you're there. Located at 64 Bd Haussmann.
  • Sit at a café and people-watch . Forget about grabbing a coffee to go. In Paris one sits and enjoys. Take a seat at a table outside a café and order a coffee then watch the world go by. The perfect activity for a solo traveler in Paris on a budget.
  • See the cathedrals. The Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris and the Basilique du Sacré Coeur are the two most interesting and iconic churches in Paris. I especially like just wandering around Notre Dame de Paris in the evening. After dark there are still many people out so the area's safe and great for people watching. Plus, the cathedral is beautifully lit. Unfortunately, it sustained serious damage in a fire in 2019, but CASA volunteers, who have offered free tours for 50 years, continue to show people around.
  • Go to a 150-year-old flea market.  Marché aux Puces translates as flea market. The largest Paris flea market is in St. Ouen and was established around 1870. It's open Friday to Monday and entry is free.
  • Cycle or roll.   Paris Rando Velo offers free hiking and cycling events in Paris. No hiking tours are scheduled at the moment but there are free rides on Friday evenings and every third Sunday where you can join about 100 others on a 20 km tour guided by the group's “staffers.” The route varies with each outing. If you don't have a bike, borrow an inexpensive one from Vélib' Métropole , a bike sharing service with 1464 docking stations in the Greater Paris area.
  • Walk, walk, walk. Paris is a fantastic walking city. You can cover all the major city sites and attractions on foot and, by doing so, you'll find all sorts of small plaques and interesting statues along the way. I also preferred walking in the evening and taking in the city at night. It's quite busy and I always felt safe. Here's a resource for self-guided walking tours on a variety of themes. They go into great detail so you can plan your day based on your interests.
  • Admire natural beauty . Wander through the parks of Paris. From Jardin des Tuileries, Jardin du Luxembourg, or Parc des Buttes-Chaumont to la Coulée verte (mentioned above), Bois de Boulogne, and Jardin des Plantes, you can enjoy a break from the city streets surrounded by greenery.
  • Check out street art . Stroll the streets of Belleville, particularly Rue Denoyez , where you can admire the graffiti and quite possibly see a street artist at work.

  • Get a Paris City Pass . The Paris City Pass gets you into many of Paris' top attractions for free. Depending on what you want to do, it can save you lots.
  • Discounted theater tickets .  Kiosque Théâtre  is a half-price ticket office for same-day performances in comedy, stand-up, cabaret, and theatre. The main Kiosque is at Place de la Madeleine. The kiosque is closed on Sundays during the summer.
  • Atelier Brancusi – Musée national d'art moderne – Centre Pompidou
  • Le Bicolore – Plateforme d'art contemporain de la Maison du Danemark
  • Le Plateau – Centre d’art contemporain
  • Musée Zadkine (free admission to the collections, except during temporary exhibition periods)
  • Mémorial de la Shoah
  • Musée d'Ennery (free entry (advance booking required) on Saturdays)
  • Europe Experience
  • Hop-on, Hop-off. A Hop-on, Hop-off tour is great if you’re short on time or want to get an overview of the city before you dig into its specifics. There's usually a 10% saving by booking online.
  • Feeling fit? Want to climb the Eiffel Tower rather than pay to ride the elevator? You'll save a bit. It used to be free but it's not as much of a savings now. Go at night and watch it light up from a distance.
  • Watch a film at the Pompidou . Centre Pompidou shows films all year long–as part of festivals, exhibits, or presentations with filmmakers in attendance–some of which are free. But even if there's a fee, it's a small price for the chance to see a unique film in a wonderful setting.

Eating Out On a Budget in Paris

  • Picnic on the Seine . This is a classic and so easy to do. Simply buy a baguette, some cheese, and a bottle of wine and then dine on the banks of the Seine river.
  • Eat with locals. When you want to splurge, just a bit, consider EatWith . You'll get more than a meal. You'll get an evening in a local's home. Dinner and entertainment and local connections–well worth the price, which is quite reasonable.
  • Search for deals . If you travel solo to Paris on a budget, it does not mean you can't enjoy a nice meal. Take a look at The Fork for special offers at Paris restaurants.
  • Go to the market.  Markets not only reveal a lot about a culture but they're also a great place to get good quality, inexpensive food.
  • French bistros are everywhere . It's pretty hard to make a bad onion soup. Topped with bread and melted cheese, it's a French standard that's inexpensive and so delicious. It's a safe bet at just about any bistro.
  • Choose the prix-fixe at lunch . For a full restaurant meal, you'll save money by going at lunch rather than dinner and ordering the prix-fixe.
  • Go to one of the budget restaurants . Have a look at these 40 options for budget dining from Hip Paris.
