Chappelle made headlines when a man attempted to attack him onstage during a 2022 show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. That man was later sentenced to 270 days in jail .
“He refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment,” his rep said of Chappelle in a statement after the incident, while noting the show tied him with comedy troupe Monty Python as the comedians who have headlined the most performances at the Hollywood Bowl.

Coming soon to a theater near you: some of the funniest comedians working today. A number of major stars are heading on comedy tours this fall, including one who's doing so for the first time in years and another who's touring for the first time period. These are the comedy tours you won’t want to miss in the coming months.
Is 2023 the year of the Tuckeraissance? After appearing in his first movie in years (Ben Affleck's "Air"), Chris Tucker announced what Live Nation noted was the comic’s first major North American tour in over a decade. His "The Legend Tour" is heading to 30 cities this fall and recently kicked off in Charleston, South Carolina. "I started my career doing stand-up in comedy clubs and it's stand-up comedy that prepared me for all of my movie roles," Tucker said. "I'm looking forward to getting back to my roots." The tour will run through Jan. 12.
He's here, he's there, he's everywhere, including a theater near you this fall. Emmy-winning "Ted Lasso" star Brett Goldstein is embarking on his very first stand-up tour . The actor's "The Second Best Night of Your Life Tour" will be in Denver on Oct. 5 before moving to Boston, Minneapolis, and more cities into December. Place your bets on how many words he gets out before dropping his first F-bomb.

You're sure to have a good trip to see Eric André on tour this fall. The star of "The Eric Andre Show" is traveling the country on his "Eric André Explosion Tour," which recently kicked off in Los Angeles. He has a ton of upcoming dates scheduled, including in Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, and Detroit. "Bring your ranch, your nightmares, and all your friends," the comedian said .
You can catch the popular British comedian Eddie Izzard on her " Remix Tour ," which has shows scheduled throughout the fall in the U.S. and heads to the U.K. in November. "I will be remixing the stand-up that I like the most from the first 35 years of my career," Izzard explained .
Make it a very Hubie Halloween season with Adam Sandler. The comedian recently announced a fall tour he’s calling the "I Missed You Tour," which will stop by 25 cities. "Let's have some fun," he posted on Instagram . He's kicking off the tour on Oct. 12 in Vancouver before heading to Seattle, Portland, Nampa, Spokane, and more locations around the country into December. Get ready for more than 20 crazy nights.
Sometimes two comedians are better than one, so Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan are heading on tour together. "Jim and I met doing 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee' and have been talking about doing this for years," Seinfeld said . "We finally made the schedules work out." Gaffigan, meanwhile, joked he's "so excited to help out this unknown up and upcoming comedian who many may have never heard of." After November shows in San Francisco and Inglewood, the pair will also head to Chicago and St. Louis.
Speaking of comedy duos, you can't get much better than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who announced their first-ever comedy tour together in February. Their "Restless Leg Tour" is continuing into the fall with shows scheduled for Cleveland, Denver, Austin, and more cities into December.
Have you seen Chelsea lately? If not, check out the schedule for her ongoing " Little Big Bitch Tour ," which has shows set throughout the fall in New York, California, and plenty of cities in between.
A certain tall child is also headed on tour this fall with some good friends. John Mulaney will be performing shows with his friend Pete Davidson, who has his own solo tour dates scheduled as well, in October and November. But for some shows, Mulaney’s “John & Pete” show will be “Jon & John,” as Mulaney has a few performances scheduled with former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart in New York and California. How’s that for a deal: two Jo(h)ns for the price of one?

Dave Chappelle's 'The Closer' controversy
Dave Chappelle came under fire in 2021 for his Netflix standup special "The Closer." The special provoked backlash due to his remarks about the LBGTQ+ community , in particular his focus on the transgender community.
In the special, Chappelle resurfaced a December 2019 controversy in which “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling drew backlash after conflating sex with gender and defending ideas suggesting that changing one's biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.
Chappelle also attempted to paint a juxtaposition between the pace of civil rights gained by the LGBTQ community and those fought for by the Black community.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended his decision to keep the special on the streaming service amid internal criticism from company employees.
Sarandos sent a staff memo at the time pledging Netflix's commitment to the special, citing Netflix's work in supporting their talent's creative freedom.
Sarandos' support of the special led to a walkout from a group of Netflix employees in 2021, a gesture that was amplified by emotional pleas from supporters of the walkout who rallied outside company headquarters.
The employees said company executives dismissed their concerns that Chappelle's comments in "The Closer" could lead to violence against the trans community.
At the time, two employees, one transgender and one non-binary, filed labor charges against the streaming giant alleging the company retaliated against them for speaking out aboutChappelle's special.
Hours before the walkout, Netflix shared a statement with USA TODAY: "We value our trans colleagues and allies, and understand the deep hurt that’s been caused. We respect the decision of any employee who chooses to walk out, and recognize we have much more work to do both within Netflix and in our content.”
"I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames this that it's me versus that community, that is not what it is," Chappelle said in a 2021 Instagram clip. "Do not blame the LBGTQ (sic) community for any of this (expletive). This has nothing to do with them. It's about corporate interest, and what I can say, and what I cannot say."
"The Closer" received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2022, including outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). Stan Lathan was also nominated for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on "The Closer."
After the Emmy nominations were announced, people on social media voiced their frustration and criticized the decision to give further recognition to Chappelle's Netflix special.
Dave Chappelle attacked onstage
In May 2022, Chappelle was attacked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles during the Netflix Is A Joke festival.
An audience member stormed the stage asChappelle, 48, was exiting the stage after his performance, lunging at him and tackling him to the ground, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department.
The man also pointed a replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, at Chappelle during the encounter, resulting in a charge for assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.
The man was identified as Isaiah Lee and in December 2022, he was sentenced to 270 days in county jail.
Dave Chappelle hosting 'Saturday Night Live'
In November 2022, Chappelle hosted "Saturday Night Live" for a third time, and the reception was not warm.
"SNL" writer Celeste Yim shared a seemingly pointed message after Chappelle was announced as host. "I'm trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned," they wrote on their Instagram Story alongside a photo from work, captured by a Reddit screenshot.
The hosting gig also came on the heels of "SNL" having just recently hired its first nonbinary cast member, Molly Kearney, just months before.

Billboard announces top 10 highest grossing comics on tour in 2023.
Every year, Billboard announces the top earners in the arts, including comedy. It’s been a great year for comedy, with all of your favorite comics embarking on massive tours that have taken them all around the country.
See the list of the highest grossing comics from 2023 below. Note, this only includes what they’ve earned on the road. This doesn’t include any stand-up specials or other projects outside of stand-up. Did your favorite make the list??
Jo Koy has been a comedy mainstay for many years now. But it’s only been within the last few years that we’ve watched Koy go from playing theaters to arenas and stadiums, and selling them out throughout the country. In 2023, he earned $13.4 million on the road, selling 198,000 tickets, and playing only 20 shows.

9) Adam Sandler
The Sandman went back on the road in 2023. Since he only started his tour up in the late fall, that has us thinking he would’ve ranked much higher is he had begun it earlier. That said, Adam Sandler still sold 141,000 tickets over 15 shows, bringing in $14.2 million.
8) Sebastian Maniscalco
In addition to having a busy year in front of the camera in TV and film, Sebastian Maniscalco also had a busy - and profitable - year onstage. Over the course of 39 shows, he earned $16.8 million with over 130,000 tickets sold. Not too bad at all!
7) Taylor Tomlinson
Taylor Tomlinson has become one of the biggest names in comedy working today, thanks to her Netflix specials. She put in a ton of work this year, playing 132 shows and selling 296,000 tickets, which brought in $17.5 million dollars. This is all before she’s hosting her new CBS late-night show .
6) Peter Kay
Peter Kay may be a name that isn’t as widely known to Americans, but he’s huge over in the U.K. As a result, this year he sold 276,000 tickets playing just 21 shows, including 10 shows at the O2 arena. This had him earning $20.5 million dollars.
5) Nate Bargatze
A favorite of ours, Nate Bargatze has been killing it on his most recent tour, playing arenas and stadiums throughout the country and beyond. He has sold 330,000 tickets, played 113 shows, and earned $20.6 million dollars.
4) Bill Burr
In addition to starring in two Netflix movies coming out within a month of each other, Bill Burr has had a great year on tour. Playing just 37 shows, he’s brought in $20.6 million dollars, selling 231,000 tickets.
3) Bert Kreischer
Another comic who had his film debut come out this year, Bert Kreischer has been touring both solo and as part of his Fully Loaded comedy festival this year. He has sold 460,000 tickets, earned $32.9 million, and played 80 total shows. That’s a hell of a year.
2) Dave Chappelle
Despite everything, Dave Chappelle continues to be a big draw on the road. Despite only playing 19 shows in 2023, the comedian sold 254,000 tickets and managed to earn a total of $36.6 million as a result.
1) Kevin Hart
Holding court at the number one spot is of course Kevin Hart . It’s quite a jump from Chappelle to Hart, with Hart having brought in a nearly double $67.5 million dollars, selling 631,000 tickets. However, this is the result of playing 82 shows, which is a lot for a comic of his caliber.

Well, Adam Sandler (again) has a microphone and you don’t, so you will listen to every damn word he has to say . That is, if you’re heading to his next stand-up comedy show.
“The Wedding Singer” star — whom we have to thank for the above line — is launching a 25-city North American tour to close out 2023. The I Missed You tour comes on the heels of his best-reviewed film, this month’s Netflix comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” and sold-out stand-up shows from earlier this year.
Adam Sandler’s ‘You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah’ director defends him for casting daughters amid nepo-baby debate
Adam Sandler sparked a nepo-baby debate for casting daughters Sunny and Sadie in ‘You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.’ But it’s on brand, director says.
Sept. 1, 2023
The comedy icon’s tour kicks off at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Oct. 12 and will hit Seattle, Portland, Ore., Las Vegas and the Midwest before wrapping in Denver on Dec. 12, according to promoter and show producer Live Nation. The tour also promises a surprise guest. (Earlier this year, his “Grown Ups” co-stars Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade joined him on stage.)
The “Murder Mystery” and “Uncut Gems” actor will be making two Southern California stops in October: First, at the Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert on Oct. 2; second, at the Honda Center in Anaheim on Oct. 23.
He’s also playing shows at the SAP Center in San Jose on Oct. 18 and Save Mart Center on Oct. 20 in Fresno.
The presale for the tour begins Thursday and the general sale begins Friday on Ticketmaster.
Review: ‘You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah’ is a sweet take on rites, fights and tween drama
Adam Sandler and his real-life family — including breakout Sunny Sandler — are charming in a comedy about feuding girls approaching their big days.
Aug. 25, 2023
The 57-year-old began his career on the stand-up circuit before landing a five-year gig on “Saturday Night Live” in the early 1990s. From there, the comic — known for his brash, man-child shtick and athleisure affinity — catapulted to superstardom with the hit comedies “Billy Madison,” “Happy Gilmore,” “The Water Boy” and “The Wedding Singer.”
The actor has taken on more dramatic fare over the last decade, starring in “The Meyerowitz Stories,” “Uncut Gems” — for which he earned a Screen Actors Guild nomination — and “Hustle.”
Sandler toured earlier this year under the Adam Sandler Live! marquee and extended that tour with seven shows in April . Before that, the comedian hit the road for his 100% Fresher tour in 2019. That live show, which streamed on Netflix, earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for writing for a variety special.

5 New Comedy Specials You Should Definitely Watch (When You Have a Moment)
Upward of 150 stand-up specials were released in 2023 . That’s a lot — much more than a generation ago, when it was hardly guaranteed that a comedian would ever film one if they weren’t one of the top names in the business. Now, if a comedian can’t get one of the cable or streaming networks to buy their special, they can self-produce and release it alongside one of the hundreds of other specials currently on YouTube, which only makes the glut of options for viewers daunting. As such, every month this column will suggest a few specials worth watching: three to five released in the given month and one older special inspired by one or more of the new releases. Think of this not as a “Best Of” list but a collection of specials that are either funny, ambitious, compelling, or peculiar — not necessarily all four at the same time, but each has something that makes it extraordinary. We can’t change the enormous amount of options out there, but we can elevate the ones that are noteworthy watches for any stand-up fan.
Alex Edelman, Just for Us (Max)
While one-person shows have become trendy over the past few years in the States, Edelman dedicated himself to longform stand-up since moving to London in 2012 and winning Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014. As a result, and though Edelman might come off twitchy and needy onstage, Just for Us is a special of uncommon confidence. Filmed during its 2023 run on Broadway , Just for Us was developed, on and off, for six years (it was nominated for the Main Prize at Edinburgh in 2018) and is built upon Edelman’s story of the time he went to a white-supremacist meeting in Queens and tried to hide that he was Jewish. But instead of a simple, heavy narrative about the plight of antisemitism, Edelman’s show grapples with knotty ideas like assimilation, whiteness, and the usefulness and limits of empathy, all while intentionally eschewing the trap of trying to offer simple answers to complex questions. More than anywhere, Just for Us shines in its pacing. Edelman allows stories to breathe enough for the audience to feel invested, but he never pushes them to the point of false pathos. If more comedians are going to try their hand at solo shows, Just for Us shows them how it’s done.
Kyle Kinane, Dirt Nap (YouTube)
“Jesus!” is how a respected storytelling comedian responded when I told them that Kinane’s sixth special ends with a 47-minute closer. Yes, the joke is virtuosic and moving in its scale , but it’s also really, really funny. There is just so much funniness packed in there, with Kinane pulling off a laugh density of a one-liner comedian. For example, there is a section about Midwesterners’ reluctance to go to therapy Kinane punctuates with, “Well, if God didn’t want me to have anxiety, why did he give me all these cuticles?” It’s already a solid joke, but Kinane piles on three more after that: “Having a rough one, Kyle, then you know what to do — that’s two handfuls of panic snacks”; “You just go lock yourself in the bathroom at lunchtime and go full Blues Travelers on them shits”; “Then you hide your bloody hamburger mittens in your pockets for the rest of the day so your coworkers don’t know how to process your feelings correctly.” Through this specific viscerality, the audience gets a more embodied and memorable impression of Kinane’s perspective than they would with an easy punch line. This special is loaded with jokes on jokes like this.
Nathan Macintosh, Down With Tech (YouTube)
At the start of the special, Macintosh thanks the audience for being there and adds, “There’s a good chance you might not have made it — you know, because it’s so easy to just sit home … and scroll.” And away he goes! What follows is a focused assault on a single topic : tech companies and the tech nerds, he argues, who run the world. While there are some well-covered areas in the hour, Macintosh more often than not finds unique angles (like describing Mark Zuckerberg showing up to a party with a tennis ball because he doesn’t know what normal people bring). But, more than anything, Macintosh’s strength is his frenzied performance and specifically his constantly cracking, sky-is-falling voice. Pacing and tonal range? That’s for the one-person shows. Macintosh is a tea kettle always on the heat. There is an irony to this special being on YouTube, the type of place Macintosh is complaining about, but it only proves how completely these companies have taken over our culture.
Christina Catherine Martinez, How to Bake a Cake in the Digital Age (YouTube)
Throughout her debut special, Martinez is shot alone in an empty gallery space, surrounded by a fridge, oven, and baking materials, wearing an unfinished pink dress pulled tight in the back with large steel clamps. It is not the first special shot without an audience , but with How to Bake a Cake it underlines the loneliness of the material and the emptiness of modern life Martinez is commenting on. When she mentions her day job at a start-up, an ominous off-camera voice asks her what she did there. “I honestly have no idea,” she says. “As far as I can tell, my job was, every day, to go into an office, and then I would, like, just touch base … all day. That’s what they don’t tell you in college: You can work in any creative industry if you know how to touch base. If you can check in and circle back as well, then like … [ she makes a fart noise with her mouth ] you have ‘upper management’ written all over you.” Then it cuts to a shot of Martinez tiny in frame, shot from a far distance and surrounded by a massive black nothingness. In this existentialist void, Martinez highlights the absurdity of trying to perform one’s “real” self in a stand-up special and, in turn, to perform one’s real self in one’s actual life when we are constantly being surveilled and self-documented. It’s a strange, experimental special, so you might not like it, but watch it anyway.
Natasha Vaynblat, We’re All Dads Here (YouTube)
An Oldie But a Goodie
Kristen schaal’s live at the fillmore (2013).
Paramount+ and YouTube, 57 minutes
Kristen Schaal’s approach on 2013’s Live at the Fillmore is equal parts We’re All Dads Here and How to Bake a Cake in the Digital Age in that, while being deeply, deeply silly and strangely horny, it is also Schaal’s attempt to blow up the rules of a stand-up special. This included spending the entire press leading up to it talking about how badly it went , resulting in a blurring of truth and reality in a way that would be more common in stand-up specials that would come out years later. I don’t want to spoil what happens, because it’s best to watch the special with questions and not answers, but either way, the result is such a perfect mix of very smart and very stupid.
Vaynblat’s We’re All Dads Here feels like a little oasis/time machine, because unlike many recent specials — the honestly emotional, politically strident, spitefully offensive, ironically detached, and post-ironically performed — she’s just really, really silly. She tells a joke about how her old roommate used to know when she was going to the bathroom because she’d hear Vaynblat say “oh boy” to herself, which gets only sillier when Vaynblat explains that she spilled water on her laptop after writing that joke, so that when the computer-repair person brought it back to life, all they saw on the screen was the phrase “oh boy when I poop” bolded and underlined. What makes the kookiness work is Vaynblat is a deliberate, self-aware joke writer and precise performer able to gracefully slip in and out of characters and voices. And while most YouTube specials are shot without much direction beyond just documenting the live show, We’re All Dads Here has some nice flourishes. At one point, Vaynblat talks about how even though her family immigrated from Russia, people don’t think she looks Russian, but she can make herself look Russian in an instant. She instructs the live audience to close their eyes so she can transform, and the camera cuts to shoot her from behind so the audience at home can similarly be surprised by her transformation. The camera cuts back as she tells the audience to “open them,” and wouldn’t you know? She does, in fact, look Russian.

Ellen DeGeneres Speaks Out About 'Getting Kicked Out of Show Business' on Stand-Up Tour
The comedian's special will air on Netflix in the fall.
Ellen Degeneres discussed being "kicked out of show business" on the first night of the Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour in West Hollywood Wednesday.
"What else can I tell you?," Degeneres joked, as reported by Rolling Stone 's Krystie Lee Yandoli. "Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There's no mean people in show business."
"The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind," she continued. "I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, 'Go fuck yourself,' people would've been pleasantly surprised."
Ellen announced in May 2021 that she was bringing her daytime talk show to an end after nearly two decades. The announcement was made after Warner Media conducted an investigation into employees' allegations of racism, sexual misconduct and intimidation from higher-ups, but the host and comedian publicly dismissed suspicions that the accusations played a part in her decision.
Degeneres confessed she spent a lot of time figuring how she wanted to address her fall from grace and what exactly she wanted to say. "Honestly, I'm making jokes about what happened to me but it was devastating, really," she said. "I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way."
Degeneres said her colleagues were like her family, but she admitted to being an immature boss who "didn’t know how to be a boss."
"I didn't go to business school. I went to Charlie's Chuckle Hutt," she joked. "The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said 'Ellen' and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said 'Ellen,' but I don’t know that that meant I should be in charge."
Degeneres spoke about her emotional struggle dealing with the bell curve of her career where she was cast aside after coming out on her sitcom in the 1990s before becoming popular once more with her talk show and falling out of favor once more.
"It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem," she confessed. "There's such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder."
She added, "For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I've been kicked out of show business…Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”
Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour will air as a special in the fall for Netflix.
