STEELY DAN & STEVE WINWOOD PUSH SUMMER RUN TO 2022

STEELY DAN & STEVE WINWOOD PUSH SUMMER RUN TO 2022

Steely Dan has rolled out its rescheduled 2022 dates with Steve Winwood . The arwice-rescheduled 2021 summer tour, which was to run throughout June and July, will now play over six weeks in 2022, kicking off on May 20th in Portland, Oregon's Veterans Memorial Coliseum and wrapping on July 3rd at Bethel, New York's Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

Donald Fagen explained a while back that Steely Dan was actually one of the most unlikely bands to gain traction on the road: “We actually ended up as a touring band by accident, really. I'm talking about my partner Walter Becker and I. Certainly I became a frontman by accident, I know that. We just couldn't find a singer that we felt could convey the attitude we we're looking for. And it became obvious that I was probably the one to do it, even though I had very little experience. Our model for songs was more literary or short story-like than being a model from popular music.”

Although Steve Winwood still tackles his own solo theater dates, we asked him if he's at all worried that his solo gigs will be overlooked after becoming the go-to-guy opening act for such A-list peers as Rod Stewart , Santana , Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers , and Steely Dan: “It's interesting. Y'know, I think there's something to be said for both. And then of course before that I was out with the Tom Petty tour, which was a success. But I think it was . . . I think it worked in conjunction with my shows. I wouldn't like to think that that was the only thing I was doing. I still like the idea of doing my shows as well. So, I think it sort of broadens the view of my music, I should think.”

Steve Winwood (born May 12, 1948) is an English rock, blue-eyed soul and adult contemporary musician and multi-instrumentalist from Handsworth, Birmingham, UK.

Steve Winwood’s ‘80s solo career saw the musician adopt a slick and polished blue-eyes soul persona, however before going solo Winwood had an eclectic career spanning decades and genres. Growing up in Handsworth, Birmingham, UK, with a semi-professional musician father, Winwood was a part of the rhythm and blues scene playing the organ and guitar on tours for esteemed artists such as Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker and Chuck Berry.

Aged 14 Winwood joined the Spencer Davis Group with his older brother Muff and collaboratively had the 1965 No. 1 hit single “Keep on Running” after which Winwood was able to purchase his own Hammond B-3 organ. He was noted for his surprisingly Ray Charles-esque vocals with a maturity and soulfulness way past his years.

Tired of the pop-single format Winwood explored his rock & roll and jazz interests and formed the band Traffic with guitarist Dave Mason, hornist Chris Wood and drummer Jim Capaldi, all of whom had played on Spencer Davis Group’s records. Merging the sounds of R&B, psychedelia, and British pop folk, Traffic released their debut single “Paper Sun” in May 1967, followed a year after with the album “Mr. Fantasy”, before the band split.

Winwood then looked to old friend Eric Clapton who had recently diverged with his band Cream. The two began playing together, along with ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker, which eventually led to the band Blind Faith, named after the faith record labels were putting into the collaboration. The band released their self-titled debut in the summer of 1969 but the pressure was too much and Blind Faith broke up before the year’s end. Winwood subsequently played in the supergroup Ginger Baker’s Air Force however departed after their debut performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

With the aim of creating a solo album Winwood took to the studio in 1970 however he gradually invited more ex-Traffic member so much so it became a reunion. Traffic subsequently released the albums “John Barleycorn Must Die” in 1970 and “The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys” in 1971 after which they reached their peak of commercial appeal. The band broke up in 1974 and Winwood spent the next few years as a session musician.

Finally going solo, Winwood released his self-titled debut in 1977 to disappointing results in the wake of a punk revolution, however his follow-up “Arc of a Driver” where he played all the instruments himself became a platinum selling hit in the U.S. After another disappointing album “Taking Back to the Night” in 1983, Winwood left it until 1986 to release “Back in the High Life”, a sophisticated and polished pop affair. The album sold over three million records and spawned his first No. 1 single “Higher Love” which also won a Grammy for Record of the Year.

Winwood has subsequently released the chart-topper “Roll With It” in 1988, "Refugees of the Heart” in 1990 and the Traffic reunion album “Far From Home”. Returning to his solo career his released “Junction Seven” in 1997 co-produced by Narada Michael Walden, the critically acclaimed “About Time” in 2003 and “Nine Lives” in 2008.

Live reviews

What a brilliant show at the Fox Theatre in Oakland on 26June2014! It was obvious from the start that the band put a lot of time into the sound check. The acoustics, which are normally very good in this refurbished 1920's venue, were crystal clear. Another nice touch was the stage setup. The musicians were arranged in a semi-circle, so you could see each one at any time without craning your neck or turning in your seat. The players were all professionals and it really showed! They just rocked! Each had various solos throughout the set. Even a rather long and entertaining drum solo, which the other musicians stood behind the set to admire. Steve's voice was as good as ever. And he appeared to be having a great time, especially when out in front of the band for one of his superb guitar solos (using both Gibson and Fender guitars).

The material spanned his entire career - Spencer Davis, Blind Faith, Traffic and solo selections. The only misgiving I had was that there were no selections from 'As the Eagle Flies'. The band had a jazzy bent to it, which would have lent itself to those tunes. The show was 1 hr 30 mins with a 15 minute, 2 song encore. Can't wait to see him again on the Tom Petty tour later this year.

Birmingham born musician Steve Winwood seems to have the midas touch when it comes to selecting bands to work with, he has been a key member of The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Go as well as having his own successful solo career where he scored a number of hit singles and was awarded two Grammy awards.

Now touring solo with his own proficient backing band, the demand to see the musician live remains ever present and fans of all ages gather to hear classic tracks and witness expert piano playing. The rapport between the musicians onstage is fantastic and they clearly still enjoy playing tracks including 'Fly' and 'Back in the High Life Again'. The majority of the covers this evening are taken from Winwood's time with Blind Faith, huge cheers are heard for the introductions of 'Can't Find My Way Home' and 'Dear Mr. Fantasy'. The instrumentals and acoustics are crystal clear this evening and give these classic tracks a new lease of life, whilst those who prefer his work with 'The Spencer Davis Group' are also catered for as Winwood saves 'Gimme Some Lovin'' for the encore.

Magnificent performance, Winwood and his crack band easily moved through his catalog of great songs...wonderful long instrumental breaks, he's assembled a band that recreates that classic Traffic sound with sax, flute, along with organ and guitar...

If he comes your way, don't miss him...

BTW, his daughter Lili opened and has a nice stage presence for a young performer...Her singing and style are at times reminiscent of Laura Nyro...

Awesome concert ! Especially since the wind was so fierce at this venue every thing was blowing around.. But Steve powered through it in superb form. We thought he had never sounded better, just showing what real talent is. Enjoyed his set list, all the favorites, but a couple of surprises, like assistance in a duet with daughter Lilly. The apple didn't fall far from that tree !

The man still rocks his ass off. I saw him open for Steely Dan in July 2016 and saw him at the Fox Theater September 6, 2017. He sounds amazing, his voice sounds the same as it did in the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic. Steve's daughter, Lily, opened for him and was incredible herself. She was a one woman band just her voice and a guitar and she sounded excellent.

I saw him at the Fabulous Fox Theater in St.Louis and it was awesome! His daughter Lilly opened for him and she has an amazing voice as well. He did indeed play his greatest hits!! Encore was John Barleycorn and Gimme Some Lovin. His old Traffic tunes transported me back to younger days!! Just closed my eyes and let the music take me away...superb

Had a great time. Music brought back lots of memories and the light show was amazing. Paired with Steely Dan just added to the amazement.Everyone was dancing in their chairs. The standing ovation lasted 5 minutes after they were finished playing. Not one person stay seated. Not even me and i am disabled.

My review of Steve Winwood, go see him. He has been in so many great bands The Spenser Davis Group, Blind Faith are just two of them. A great piano player and guitarist. I saw him open for Santana at Jones beach in 2011. A great performance by SW. I came away wanting more of his music

kevin-p-donovan’s profile image

High expectations faded... his voice is amazing and the band is great, but 1h 40min spent with few very long songs and far from the best selection. Apollo is not the best venue, but I have been in excellent concerts there. Disappointing

telmalon’s profile image

I saw him and his band at the Warner Theatre in DC. He was on fire, and every musician in that band was a star in his own right, with CDs that I now own and play regularly. His daughter also appeared with him, which was great.

Steely Dan will “do it again” in 2021 and 2022.

The jazzy classic rock group, known for hits like “Reelin’ In The Years” and “Do It Again,” are currently in the middle of their 2021 “Absolutely Normal Tour” and come summer 2022, they will tour with special guest Steve Winwood .

Following the untimely passing of founding member Walter Becker in 2017, co-founder Donald Fagen vowed in a statement “to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band” and has ever since playing with a backing band and backup vocalists.

If you’re planning on seeing Steely Dan’s music kept alive, here’s everything you need to know about how to catch the tail end of the “Absolutely Normal” tour or the Steve Winwood 2022 shows.

Where can I buy Steely Dan tickets?

You won’t have to do any “dirty work” to find Steely Dan tickets because seats for 2021 and 2022 shows can be found on all ticketing sites. Check Vivid Seats , StubHub , Ticketmaster , SeatGeek and TicketNetwork .

Where will Steely Dan be playing in 2021?

The Grammy winning band has just a few shows left for this calendar year. You can catch the “Absolutely Normal Tour” at:

  • Nov. 17 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts
  • Nov. 19 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts
  • Nov. 20 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts
  • Nov. 22 at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Nov. 23 at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, New York

Where can I see Steely Dan in 2022?

The Steely Dan and Steve Winwood tour will be made up of rescheduled tour dates from 2020 and 2021 . Starting off in Oregon on May 20, the tour will take the pair* to 30+ stages across the U.S. ending in South Carolina on Aug. 4.

There will be a New Jersey concert on June 30 at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel .

*Starting on July 15, concerts will not include Steve Winwood on the bill according to several ticketing sites.

To see if this may affect you, the official schedule, with dates and times, is here .

What songs are on Steely Dan’s set list?

It appears to change often as the band sometimes plays albums in their entirety and other times performs a mixture of popular tracks. There are even occasional shows where Donald Fagen will play tracks from his 1982 solo album “The Nightfly.”

If you want to find out what order Steely Dan have played their songs in at past shows, there’s no better resource than Setlist.FM .

Spoiler alert: “Kid Charlemagne” gets a lot of action.

Steve Winwood Makes First Stage Appearance in 3 Years

steve winwood tour 2022

Steve Winwood, and his son Cal on congas, with the Staks Band, at the 2022 edition of the Cornbury Music Festival

Steve Winwood has made his long awaited return to the concert stage. His performance, the first in over three years, was as a special guest of the Staks Band, on July 10, 2022, at the final Cornbury Music Festival in Oxfordshire, England. The 74-year-old music legend joined the band’s set to play several songs including such favorites as “Higher Love,” “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” as a tribute to Gary Brooker who died earlier this year, and “Gimme Some Lovin’.” According to the reliable website, Setlist.fm , Winwood’s last known performance was on Feb. 28, 2019, in Dublin, Ireland.

Winwood was supposed to be the supporting act on Steely Dan’s tour, which was originally planned for 2020 and then 2021. It’s finally taking place this year, after being postponed twice by the pandemic. However, on Feb. 1, Winwood withdrew from the tour with a brief announcement on his various social media platforms. “Due to unforeseen circumstances,” it read, “Steve will not be appearing with Steely Dan on the upcoming Spring/Summer 2022 tour.” The note added, “Please stay tuned for new show announcements.” As of July 14, however, none have been forthcoming.

On May 20, however, the Cornbury festival shared the welcome news that Winwood would be playing at their last event.

On July 9, the day before the performance, the classic rock legend posted a rehearsal clip. Though the Staks Band haven’t updated their social media pages since 2020, they describe themselves as “a high-energy Soul/R&B band featuring musicians who have collectively performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in the industry. The regular line-up is often augmented by well-known guest artists.”

You know, like Steve Winwood.

According to a fan who attended the outdoor performance in the sweltering summer heat, Winwood didn’t join the band’s set until around halfway through. The fan says he played three songs: “Higher Love,” “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” and “Gimme Some Lovin’.” “I think that was it, unless emotion has clouded my memory, she joked.” Winwood was joined by his son, Cal, who plays congas.

Another fan posted a tantalizingly brief 10-second clip from the performance.

Winwood had recorded “A Whiter Shade of Pale” with Carlos Santana for the latter’s 2021 studio album,  Blessings and Miracles . At the Cornbury Festival, he dedicated his performance of the song to Gary Brooker who died earlier this year.

Steely Dan – Woodlands Pavilion – The Woodlands, TX – June 3, 2022 – Review

Written by Dave Clements

Could it be that Winwood was now performing under the name Snarky Puppy?…darn I hope so, I said to myself. Quickly I went to my cell phone and Googled Snarky Puppy…no Steve Winwood in their lineup!! What pray tell happened to Steve? What did I miss?

It seems that when this Steely Dan Tour (Earth After Hours) was rescheduled as a result of COVID Mr. Winwood was dropped for ‘unforeseen circumstances’ (whatever that means). I sure hope that the unforeseen circumstances had nothing to do with Steve’s health. Steve is 74. Maybe Fagan felt like Steve was ‘too good’ to be the tour opener? I hope that wasn’t the reason EITHER.

Fagan brought nine world class musicians and three back-up singers with him to The Woodlands who were able to replicate the studio sounds of the band with precision and what more could a ticketholder want? Answer…Steely Dan and Steve Winwood. And no one who object if you threw in a Snarky Puppy! They did a very nice job and respectfully eleven out of every ten times I would have taken Winwood over Snarky Puppy…but I think you get that by now!

What do you think…? Until next time support live music every chance you have!

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

steve winwood tour 2022

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

steve winwood tour 2022

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

steve winwood tour 2022

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

steve winwood tour 2022

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

steve winwood tour 2022

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

steve winwood tour 2022

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

steve winwood tour 2022

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

steve winwood tour 2022

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

steve winwood tour 2022

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

steve winwood tour 2022

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

steve winwood tour 2022

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
