Sightseeing Tours: Wonderful Wiltshire - Stonehenge & Avebury, Lacock & Castle Combe

As one of the most recognizable pre-historic monuments in the world, Stonehenge will need no introduction to many visitors - what surprises many are number of related neolithic sites which accompany Stonehenge as you enter the West of England: many, such as lesser known Avebury henge, are just a short distance from Stonehenge itself but remain little known to visitors.

Whatever their intended purpose, many of these ancient sites are remarkably well preserved and well worth visiting, especially for those with an interest in the neolithic stone age history - even if you're not a history afficionado, allow yourself to enjoy the sites and transport your mind back several thousand years to appreciate the manpower and motives involved in constructing these monuments.

Britain's most beautiful landscapes Walk the paths of ritual specialists and builders of Britain's most fascinating and awe-inspiring prehistoric sites, at Stonehenge and Avebury. Explore the Roman and Georgian history of Bath. Guaranteed small groups 8 - 18 participants.

This feature-packed archaeological tour takes in the iconic stone circles of Stonehenge and Avebury and a delightful break in the beautiful Roman city of Bath.

Leaving from London by luxury mini bus, this Stonehenge tour will explore its iconic standing stones with expert analysis by a trained archaeologist. Nearby Avebury is an even more impressive site, covering a much wider area and you will also encounter Neolithic burial tombs and the less visited ancient site of Woodhenge.

Mid-day is spent in gorgeous Bath offering history of a different era. There are colorful remnants of its glorious Roman past to see and regency mansion houses from Georgian times. The famous Roman baths are a must see.

Tour itinerary.

The morning starts with a visit to Durrington Walls and Woodhenge, home to the 'Stonehenge Builder's' village and the most convincing evidence for human sacrifice. We then travel a short distance to Stonehenge. We enjoy a leisurely paced walk through the landscape immediately surrounding Stonehenge, visiting the Stonehenge Cursus, Bronze Age burial mounds and walk along the Stonehenge Avenue. We complete our morning at Stonehenge with a guided walk around the stone circle, our archaeologists bringing to life this enigmatic, ancient and mysterious monument.

At mid-day we arrive at the beautiful Georgian city of Bath. Here we allow our guests approx 2 hours to enjoy the centre of this city, famous for Jane Austen, Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths. We also use this opportunity for our guests to have lunch.

We conclude our visit to Bath with a coach tour of the most impressive examples of architecture Bath has to offer, visiting the Assembly Rooms, Royal Circus and Royal Crescent.

The Afternoon is spent at the Avebury World Heritage Landscape. We visit Silbury Hill, the largest man-made hill in prehistoric Europe. We enter the 5500 year old burial chamber of West Kennet Long Barrow, entering a sacred space originally reserved only for ritual specialists and the dead.

We finish by visiting the largest stone circle in Europe at Avebury, with its beautiful medieval village situated inside. As John Aubrey in the 1600's notes [Avebury]..."does as much exceed in greatness the so renowned Stonehenge as a Cathedral doeth a parish church."

West Kennet Long Barrow One of the largest Neolithic burial tombs in Britain. The West Kennet Long Barrow was constructed about 3700 BC, and was in continual use for well over 1000 years.

Silbury Hill The largest man-made mound in ancient Europe, Silbury Hill was constructed c2800 BC. Even after centuries of research, archaeologists have still not discovered the original purpose of the Hill - ideas include it use as a territorial marker, burial mound and as a cenotaph.

Avebury Henge, Stone Circle and West Kennet Avenue The largest stone circle in Europe, Avebury formed the centre of one of the most impressive Neolithic ceremonial landscapes in Britain. The great circles, 200 standing stones arranged in an outer and 2 inner circles, surrounded by a massive bank and ditch, were the focal point of the area. They were connected by the West Kennet Avenue of standing stones to other locales in the region, including the Sanctuary on Overton Hill - the site of a postulated temple. Hundreds of great sarsen stones from the downland around, often weighing over 20 tonnes, were used in the construction of the site, some 2500-2200 BC Visit Bath for Lunch, Guided coach tour and 'Free Time'

Durrington Walls The site of a large Neolithic settlement and later henge enclosure. It is 2 miles north-east of Stonehenge. Recent excavation at Durrington Walls, support an estimate of a community of several thousand, thought to be the largest one of its age in north-west Europe. At 500m in diameter, the henge is the largest in Britain and recent evidence suggests that it was a complementary monument to Stonehenge Woodhenge Neolithic monument, dating from about 2300 BC, six concentric rings, once possibly supported a ring-shaped building. Stonehenge Cursus (sometimes known as the Greater Cursus) is a large Neolithic cursus monument next to Stonehenge. It is roughly 3km long and between 100 and 150m wide. Excavations by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2007 dated the construction of the earthwork to between 3630 and 3375 BC. This makes the monument several hundred years older than the earliest phase of Stonehenge in 3000 BC. Bronze Age round barrows The Stonehenge UNESCO world heritage site is said to contain the most concentrated collection of prehistoric sites and monuments in the world. One monument type missed by the casual observer is that of the Bronze Age round barrow (burial mounds). As we walk through this landscape, you will come into contact with these intriguing ancient burial sites and through the expertise of our tour leaders, you will come face to face with the customs and people of Bronze Age society buried in close proximity to the unique stone circle of Stonehenge. Stonehenge Avenue - Walk along the Stonehenge Avenue and approach this unique stone circle as was the intended route experienced by the Stonehenge's contempories. Admission to Stonehenge The great and ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is an exceptional survival from a prehistoric culture now lost to us. The monument evolved between 3000 BC - 1600 BC and is aligned with the rising and setting of the sun at the solstices.

This is a very popular tour and must be booked well in advance!

Stonehenge at sunset

We can do that.

This is what we are passionate about -

We do exactly as we say in our title. Fully guided private tours from the beautiful Georgian city of Bath. (Don't forget to get a quote for our Airport Transfer service) - our meet and greet service often undercuts the price of a train or coach - true!

We offer a fully bespoke service, taking independent travellers out for a full day tour to explore Wiltshire, The Cotswolds and Somerset or indeed anwhere that takes your fancy!

We are blessed in Bath to have so many historic and aesthetically pleasing places to visit, more or less on our doorstep, Itineraries can be built specifically for you and your personal interests, or you can trust us to put a day together just for you.

Highlights can include:

Stonehenge - One of the most impressive megalithic monuments in Europe.

Avebury Stone Circle - 16 times larger than Stonehenge, yet 50 times less visited. The lack of media attention has helped retain the unspoilt nature of the site.

Tours of the Cotswold - An area of rolling upland and outstanding natural beauty, take a wander through the charming countryside and unspoilt hidden away villages, some as old as a thousand years.

Highclere Castle ( Downton Abbey ) - tours have proved to be one of our most popular destinations in 2016 - I must admit - its a great day out, we do have access to limited numbers of tickets which are available from February 2017. We can combine a visit to Highclere with an early morning at Stonehenge - a truly memorable experience, we can be there for opening time thus avoiding the crowds and giving you the opportunity for that elusive photograph of the Stones without someones head in the way.

We can also link in a visit to Highclere with a visit to Blenheim Palace - the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.

During the last 8 years in my current role I am delighted to have discovered some truly wonderful Old English Pubs - we can book lunch tables in amazing old buildings and enjoy amazing food!

Do you like Churches? How about our new tour for 2018 which includes Salibury Cathedral and the Magna Carta, Wells Cathedral and the Bishops Palace, Glastonbury Abbey and last but not least Bath Abbey - all in one day? Easy!

Thanks for visiting!

stonehenge avebury tour from bath

Stonehenge, Lacock Village, Bath and Avebury Stone Circle. London Departure

stonehenge avebury tour from bath

Journey through England's spectacular countryside on this small group day tour from London. Visit Bath, Lacock, Avebury, and Stonehenge. On this Stonehenge tour you will have a great mixture of British history from the Neolithic through the Romans to the 18th century transformation of Bath by the Georgians. This tour departs every Wednesdays / Friday and the price includes all entrance fees.

Three World Heritage Sites in one day!

Journey through England's spectacular countryside on this small group day tour from London. We'll visit mysterious Stonehenge to unlock the secrets of this prehistoric stone circle, continuing on to the elegant city of Bath with its beautiful terraces and squares, amazing Roman ruins and hot springs. We then journey down narrow lanes through the delightful Cotswolds and the Mediaeval village of Lacock for a guided walk. Our day trip from London ends with a visit to the spectacular stone circle at Avebury.

Our small group day trip from London begins with an escape from the city to rural Wiltshire, where high on the chalk uplands of Ancient Wessex we find enigmatic Stonehenge. As we travel to this awe-inspiring site our guide will illustrate the known facts and discuss the ever-changing theories connected to the monument. We head up to the circle itself and during our guided tour we learn of the different periods of building, some stretching back 5,000 years, we learn of the people that worshipped here and the various ideas of its alignments and purpose. There is a chance to experience the visitor centre and exhibition before we continue our journey westwards to Bath.

Visitors have been visiting Bath for centuries, owing to the hot springs that bubble up to the surface at several locations in the city. At a constant temperature of 46.5C, the only warm springs in the country, it isn't surprising that the Romans developed their resort of Aqua Sulis here 2,000 years ago. The city was beautifully re-invented in the 18th century when it became the fashionable place to see and be seen. Elegant crescents, squares and terraces were built as the rich and famous travelled from London for 'the season' and to take the waters in the hope that it would cure gout, rheumatic pain and stiffness of the joints. See the Roman Temple, and original Roman pavement. Take some time for lunch (own expense) in one of the elegant tea rooms, and try a famous Sally Lunn bread bun. Explore 18th century crescents and squares of the Georgian city, built 250 years ago when Bath became the social centre for high society with dancing, bathing and all manner of relaxation.

We then drive up into the limestone hills of the Cotswolds for a scenic country journey stopping in the Medieval village of Lacock, now owned by the National Trust and full of beautiful cottages and narrow streets which our smaller vehicle is able to navigate. This picture-perfect place boasts an ancient barn, old village lock-up and 15th century church. Due to the large number of old and beautiful cottages here, Lacock has been used as a backdrop for many TV and film productions such as Harry Potter, Cranford, Pride and Prejudice and the recent Downton Abbey movie.

After our tour of Lacock, we'll continue to Avebury, a pretty village of thatched cottages nestling in the middle of a huge circle of ancient stones. Beautifully unique, the stone circle here is over fourteen times larger than its more famous neighbour, Stonehenge. Enjoy a guided walk around the mysterious standing stones and some free time to explore the attractive village before our small group day trip ends, and we return to London.
