An unforgettable evening on the water

Our Exmouth whale tours are an experience unlike any other. We’ll start our cruise from Exmouth Marina, heading out into the rich gulf waters to find migrating humpback whales.

The route changes depending on weather and whale sightings, so it’s always an exciting adventure. These enormous cetaceans are as unpredictable as they are beautiful – but we know how to find them.

Along the way, keep an eye out for dolphins, dugongs, sea snakes, turtles and pilot whales. The waters around Exmouth are full of extraordinary creatures.

A healthy respect for the unique natural beauty of Ningaloo

Ningaloo Marine Park is a protected area and a UNESCO World Heritage list member. Although we won’t be able to swim with the whales, we can still get you close enough to witness their spectacular size and playful nature.

We ask that you show the reef – and the migrating whales – the deserved respect while onboard our Exmouth whale tours.

But the real star of our Exmouth sunset cruises is the full walk-around deck. You always have an uninterrupted view of the action no matter where the whales choose to appear.

Built by Outlaw Boats in 2015, Fawesome is the sophisticated outlaw of Exmouth whale tours. We’re looking forward to welcoming you onboard.

The boat was high quality and comfortable (Blue Strike), the staff were super freindly and took the time to explain and ensure we maximised our time swimming with the whale sharks. Jeff the Captain did an amazing job getting us into position efficiently. Super fun day, then to cap it off, the quality of the pics and videos of the day were next level! • NewieTraveller 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Surreal Experience Swimming with Whale Sharks has been on my bucket list & thanks to the amazing Crew of Jazz-2 (our boat for the day) on 12 March 2024 I got to tick that box with this surreal experience It’s incredible to watch these huge fish (one’s we saw on the day varied in length 4 to 8 metres) serenely swim up from deep blue. I can’t rate my experience with Exmouth Dive & Whalesharks Ningaloo more highly. Picked up from Exmouth Wharf in mini bus (we were off a cruise ship), driven through amazing area that is the North West Cape to Ningaloo Reef boat ramp. Taken out to our boat Jazz-2, clear considerably instructions for safety & to optimise our day. All gear in great condition & best ever they gave me prescription lens face mask 👏👏👏 We did swims & had incredible & rare scenario of two whalesharks together. I am a strong swimmer & confident snorkeller but the Crew did amazing job for people that weren’t & they got the opportunity to swim in open ocean The Crew also prepared an amazing lunch. We also saw dolphins, mantra-ray & turtles Do this once in your life, make sure you book Exmouth Dive & Whalesharks Ningaloo Read more Written 30 March 2024
  • I1909YUamandaw 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Make sure the weather is perfect before you go We were supposed to go to Blizzard Ridge but the cyclone ruined visibility. But we didn't figure that out until we all went down, swam around a bit, couldn't see anything and then had to move sites. So we wasted some time there, and then went to Bundiggi (sp?), an alternate dive site. Normally, I'm pretty understanding about weather - the crew obviously can't control it - but they had no policy for either partial refunds or rescheduling. Then we found out when we got back that the other dive boat that had the same problems gave everyone a partial refund, so then we all felt crappy for having paid so much for a kind of crappy dive day. And while I loved the dive team, I was mostly annoyed because our dive instructor did not seem experienced enough to handle the problems the group had. One woman clearly had no idea how much weight she needed and the instructor didn't bring enough, and the woman didn't do her buoyancy test properly, so we didn't find out until the dive started that she needed more weight and it ended up messing with the dive. Then the instructor didn't have enough weight and was having to grab live coral to hold herself to the ground. It was... not good. I hate leaving less than five star reviews but for as expensive as this trip was, the experience was really way beneath the cost. I will say the crew were all lovely people, it was just way too expensive for what we actually received unfortunately. They should have issued partial refunds like the other boat or given us a credit for another dive. Read more Written 16 March 2024

We were so fortunate to find the most chilled, calm whaleshark to swim with & the snkorkeling was unreal. The extra little touches like a glass of bubbles after seeing the whalesharks & having photos of us swimming with the whalesharks included made the whole experience extra special. Huge thanks to the crew for a truly wonderful experience 🙏 ❤️ Read more Written 30 October 2023

  • RicksRedDevils 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles ONCE IN A LIFETIME All reports suggest you can’t see whale sharks in October at Exmouth. They are all wrong, this was a fantastic experience we swam with 2 whale sharks, I could not hav swam anymore. We also saw a dolphin while snorkeling along with turtles (doing the tango!) & hump back whales from the boat. Furthermore there less people out there because it was off season and the sea was the warmest you could hope for whalesharks = actually this was the best time of the year to do it! I will add to above a traveller friend advised me (from speaking to a competitor operator who don’t go in Oct) that only 1 whale shark had been seen from all tours in October with 30 people trying to see them, how wrong he was and how glad I am, I listened to this tour group instead. Also want to add the staff that worked on this boat were all excellent, they made the whole experience very enjoyable; the spotters helped to make it even more exciting, the photographer was arguably the number 1 ocean photographer in Exmouth & Michael had a great sense of humour, providing lots of advice on various other things we could do in Exmouth. We are all very glad we did this tour, once in a lifetime and well worth it. Read more Written 26 October 2023
  • W3152EHlaurent 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best experience and company ever! My partner and I recently completed our Open Water PADI Dive Course with Exmouth Dive and truly cannot put into words how incredible our experience was. Yardena (Jordan) was our instructor and her kind heart and fun attitude made the three days of the course both extremely enjoyable and put all nerves at ease. In our ocean dives, we saw reef sharks, mantarays, turtles, whales and so much more! Her adventurous spirit allowed our group to safely adventure the ocean whilst learning valuable skills. Tyler was a fantastic skipper and went out of his way to ensure all of the passengers saw a range of sea life and were comfortable. We cannot recommend Exmouth Dive again! Will be back! • smithnz 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent trip The staff were excellent in making sure everyone got what they wanted from the trip. There was a big age range from children (7and 9) to late 60s as well as experience snorkeling. From very experienced to having snorkel only once before. Some people choose to enjoy the trip and did not enter the water. The snorkeling spots were great, so many different varieties of fish including sharks. Plus we saw turtles mating. The best was the whale shark. We had 4 opportunities to see and swim with it. Amazing animal. The staff were very helpful making sure you saw and could swim with it. For this trip , you are driven to the site where the boat is anchored offshore and are transported by tender boat. This is close to turquoise bay. Can highly recommend. • Y1038MGpeterm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Professional skipper and dive leaders . Great food and hospitality.Nothing was a problem and a high standard of safety Hi there I have been coming to scuba dive Ningaloo Reef at Exmouth since 1993 and have always gone with EDC and have usually stayed for a week diving flat out living the dream diving non stop because it is such a special part of the world. There have been a few owners over the years and it was always a professional set up hence I stayed loyal and then Mark and Deb took over the company who I used to dive with their company in Fremantle in the mid 2000’s. So some years ago they took over here and have taken the dive company to the next professional level and last Friday the 13th of October 2023 we did 2 dives on Lighthouse Bay and it was one of the best trips I have been on! It’s ok to be 100% honest! The marine life on the way out was awesome with humpbacks 🐋 turtles 🐢 a big olive sea snake 🐍 and this is before we went underwater 😎 Then on the first dive having a big Manta glide right past us at the start of the dive was unbelievable. The whole day was exceptional and what makes it is the professional service from the skipper and crew was second to none 😎👍😎 Definitely was like I said one of the best trips I have done on Ningaloo and that is over 50+ dives over the years coming here. Like to thank the dive crews we had and the captain for the great day and such a great dive boat to go on that’s got all the comfort. Looking forward to coming back soon so a big shout out to a great team as was a great day 😎👍😎🇦🇺 Read more Written 15 October 2023

Our spotter plane found them just after lunch and we managed to swim with one whale shark three times. Big shout out to the team - Nick, Ricardo, Linn and Mike -who went absolutely above and beyond with our experience on board, in the water, and pointing out marine life from the boat. We went for two swims beforehand and saw an abundance of fish underwater, including a sting ray and reef shark. Such a good trip, I highly recommend this to anyone looking for marine life interaction. Read more Written 10 October 2023

I had the BEST time with Exmouth Dive and Whalesharks Ningaloo on a Whaleshark snorkel and a trip to Muiron Islands too. From how my bookings were handled in the office to the onboard experience, the team is first class! The bar's been set very high by all Exmouth tour operators, so much so that other trips I've made since (in the Canary Islands, for example) don't come close in terms of the experience gained during the adventure. Oh well, even more reason to return to Ningaloo again, again and AGAIN! Thanks guys/gals - I hope you all enjoy a little downtime before the next season lands on top of you! Best whale shark tours in exmouth.

Exmouth’s whale shark season is between late March to late July . There are dozens of tour operators offering this life-changing experience, most are highly rated.

sunset tours exmouth

Hot tip: We went on a tour in late July and one in August, and we just missed seeing the whale sharks. It is a gamble that late in the season. But earlier on you are almost guaranteed to see them.

These are full-day tours, so you’ll have to save a whole day for your itinerary only for this. And although these tours don’t come cheap, they are worth every. single. penny.

(We didn’t even swim with a whale shark, and the tour was still worth it to us! Best tour ever!)

3) Swim with Humpbacks AND/OR Whale sharks Tour!

We did this tour, and it was absolutely incredible. As you can see, the reviews are 5 stars. This is for good reason, they really look after you on this tour.

Here’s an idea of some of the inclusions, potential to swim with humpback whales, whale sharks, manta rays, turtles and more. Usually you get 2 to 3 snorkels on the reef too! Plus all gear, instructions, guides, travel to and from the boat, snacks, lunch, beverages, photos and more.

This tour is a good option for adventurous people who are just happy to see and swim with whatever is found out on the reef the day that you visit.

Best humpback whale tours in Exmouth

Humpback whales migrate through Exmouth and you can swim with them between August to October .

There are two types of tours to choose from – swimming tours and whale-watching tours.

Swimming tours are best reserved for confident swimmers looking for an adventure. This is because you’re required to swim in the open ocean.

sunset tours exmouth

Groups are smaller to swim with a humpback whales – 5 swimmers at a time, compared to 10 swimmers in whale shark tours.

That’s why most people would rather go on a whale-watching tour instead. It’s a cheaper experience, and can be an incredible experience too.

Here’s our favourite tour for each:

3) Swim with humpback whales

This full-day tour starts with a snorkelling session on the stunning Ningaloo Reef, while the spotter plane looks for humpback whales.

sunset tours exmouth

Once it spots them, the boat will take you to the whales. You’ll get in the water downstream from the whales (if conditions are right) and see them as they approach you – you often hear them singing underwater!

4) Sunset whale-watching tour

If you’d rather stay in the safety of a boat and do the finest whale-watching possible, consider this 2-hour sunset tour.

There’s a maximum of 29 travellers, but you won’t notice it – the boat has ample space for everyone. They include food and beverages, but you can bring your own if you like.

PS: You can do this tour regardless of the season, but just imagine watching humpback whales breaching during the sunset…

Top snorkelling tours in Exmouth

If you’re like us, you’ll probably spend most of your days in Exmouth, snorkelling the Ningaloo Reef.

The area is famous for its buzzing marine life, thousands of tropical fish, stunning coral gardens, and the turtles and manta rays that call this place home.

But it is true that tours are the BEST way to see the reef (unless you or your friends have a boat of your own). This is because they can take you out to abundant reef areas off the shore, and with their spotter planes they can have a visual on the whales, manta rays and whale sharks in the area that day.

There are dozens of incredible spots to snorkel in, but doing a snorkel tour will take you to the best (and secluded places!) with a local guide.

5) Half-day snorkel turtle tour

6) Full-day kayaking and snorkelling

We absolutely loved this tour, as well as the operator – Exmouth Adventure Co. They really look after you.

This is the perfect tour for those who want to experience the Ningaloo Reef more intimately. You’ll be with a small group, and the knowledgeable guide will take you kayaking on the pristine waters of the reef.

They took us to Osprey Bay Sanctuary Zone, which is where they do most of these tours. It’s absolutely stunning.

sunset tours exmouth

They also include everything – park fees, food and drinks, pick-up, drop-off, kayaking and snorkelling equipment, and even photos! If you’re lucky, dolphins will swim by too.

Scuba diving tours

Do you have a scuba dive certification, or planning to have one before your trip to Exmouth? If you do, do not miss the chance to check at least one of the dive sites on this side of the Ningaloo coast.

Exmouth has the world-renowned Navy Pier nearby – one of the top 10 dive sites in Australia. And the stunning underwater landscape of the Muiron Islands is a 1.5-hour boat trip from town.

As for scuba diving tours go:

7) Muiron Island diving tour

The Muiron Islands are a scuba diver’s paradise, we went diving here and highly recommend it. Their corals are unique and very colourful, not to mention the teeming marine life that resides there – thousands of tropical fish, turtles, dolphins and reef sharks, to name a few.

Now, this full-day tour will take you to two different diving spots. It includes everything – transport, food, equipment, fees, etc.

Check this out: Everything you should know before visiting Muiron Islands .

8) Scuba dive the Navy Pier

This exceptional diving spot is a 15-minute drive from Exmouth, but is not accessible to the general public – it’s still used by Navy ships. It is world famous and ranked one of the best shore dive sites in the world.

That, and the fact that fishing isn’t allowed, means that the underwater landscape is incredible for such a small area (300 metres).

It’s an item you must cross off your bucket list if you’re certified! Only one tour operator is licenced to offer scuba dive tours here.

Hiking tours in Cape Range National Park

Cape Range National Park is one of the treasures of the North West Cape. It has rugged limestone ranges and deep canyons, combined with the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Sunset Charles Knife Canyon

There are dozens of things to do in the park , including 4WDing the bottom of a canyon (Shothole Canyon). But as far as tours go, hiking is a beautiful way to experience the area. These are the ones we recommend:

9) Cape Range National Park Full-Day Trekking Adventure

This full-day hiking tour consists of 2-3 treks, depending on the fitness of the overall group. The distance covered will be between 10-14km in total.

The tour itself starts by taking you exploring one of the many canyons of the park, where you’ll be able to see the jaw-dropping coastline of the Ningaloo.

Then, the guide will take you to the beach, where you can relax, have lunch, and snorkel in the reef. And if time allows, the tour can close with a visit to Mangrove Bay – a unique bird-watching area.

sunset tours exmouth

10) 2-Day Trekking Adventure And Camping

For those who want to take it to the next level, what about an overnight trek on the Cape Range?

On day one, you’ll explore Yardie Creek with a 6km hike, having plenty of birdlife around you. Then, you’ll make it to the top of the range to set camp and watch the sunset in one of the most remote corners of Western Australia.

Day two starts with the sunrise and breakfast, followed by an 8km hike along the sandy dunes. It finishes with a refreshing swim on the Ningaloo Reef.

Planning Your Trip to Exmouth

Taking an adventure to Exmouth requires some planning to make the most of your visit to this spectacular corner of Western Australia. These are my tips to help you plan your trip:

Best Time to Visit

Exmouth experiences a warm, semi-arid climate, making it a great year-round destination. However, the best time to visit largely depends on what you want to do:

  • March to July is ideal for swimming with whale sharks, as these gentle giants migrate through Ningaloo Reef during these months.
  • August to October offers excellent conditions for humpback whale watching and enjoying the wildflower blooms across the Cape Range National Park.
  • The Australian summer months (December to February) can be scorching but are good if you’re looking to escape the cold from other parts of the world, but remember to stay hydrated and protected from the sun. It is also wet season and from November to April cyclones are a possibilty.

  • Summer Sunset Turtle Watching Tour

Ningaloo Coast sunset | Observe nesting turtles | Stargazing

Accompany our experienced and informative guides for an evening of turtle watching and star gazing in the Jurabi Coastal Park, situated on the World Heritage Listed Ningaloo Coast.

Enjoy a light snack and cool drink as you watch the sunset and learn about one of the world’s most important turtle rookeries, the turtle watching ‘Code of Conduct’, and how you can become an ambassador for the conservation of marine turtle species world-wide.

Following sunset, we move out onto the beach to put all of our new-found knowledge into practice, as we attempt to observe the nesting habits of female turtles.

There will also be the opportunity to enjoy some of the world’s best stargazing in the unspoiled dark skies of Ningaloo (dependent on the phase of the moon).

This is a fully guided tour; your guides will be with you every step of the way. You will need an average level of fitness and mobility for ‘commando crawling’ on the beach for viewing nesting turtles close up, however if you choose not to participate in this activity, you can simply observe from further away.

ACTIVITIES INCLUDED IN THIS TOUR:

Beach based turtle nesting/viewing, sunset and star gazing tour

3.5 to 4 hours

TOUR INCLUSIONS AT A GLANCE:

Pick up/drop off from Exmouth accommodation | Drinks and nibbles to enjoy as the sun sets | Red lights for viewing wildlife at night to avoid disturbance | Binoculars and star maps for star gazing

November 15 to February 15

Jurabi Coastal Park, Ningaloo Coast, Exmouth WA

Adult: $130 | Children (5-17): $115 | Family (2 Adults + 2 Children): $420* Additional children $99*

(*Direct bookings only. Please contact us for other family/group rates)

TOUR NUMBERS:

This tour will run with a minimum of 4 guests, and a maximum of 10. We can cater for larger groups or offer custom tours. Please contact us to discuss.

TOUR LIMITATIONS:

Minimum age is 5 years old. This tour involves a moderate level of physical activity - an average level of fitness and mobility is recommended. Crawling through sand to view turtle nesting activity close up is required. You may choose to opt out of this activity, and view turtles from further away.

TOUR MEETING POINT:

Pick up from Exmouth accommodation around 6.15pm (exact pick up time will be confirmed at time of booking).

Turtle emerging from the ocean on turtle viewing tour Exmouth Ningaloo

Your Tour Begins...

With pick up from your Exmouth accommodation just before 6.30pm. Once we have everyone on board, your guide will start the drive (approx 20 minutes) to the Jurabi Coastal Park - the site of your Summer Sunset Turtle Viewing Tour. Along the way, you'll learn about the interesting history of Exmouth and the NW Cape; your guide will give you an introduction to the species of marine turtles that nest here, and the importance of the turtle rookery; and you'll get an introduction to the 'Turtle Watcher's Code of Conduct', which gives us important guidelines on how we can best enjoy this natural phenomenon without disturbing the nesting turtles.

You'll arrive at the beach in time to enjoy a west coast sunset, and your guide will prepare some drinks and nibbles to enjoy, while you chat about what happens next! Once it's dark, your guide will lead you down to the beach, where you'll wait in anticipation of seeing some female turtles start the journey up the beach to lay their eggs.

In the meantime, the star gazing opportunities are phenomenal, and your guide can point out some constellations as you scan the sky for satellites or shooting stars.

If we are lucky, we'll witness a turtle laying her eggs, and your guide will ensure that we do this whilst minimising disturbance. It's an incredible thing to witness, and once you learn about the lifecycle of these amazing creatures you'll find that you want to tell everyone how important it is that we protect the undeveloped critical habitat along the Ningaloo Coast.

Turtle emerging from the ocean on turtle viewing tour Exmouth Ningaloo

  • Attempt to observe the nesting habits of Ningaloo’s marine turtles in an environmentally sensitive way
  • Enjoy star gazing in the unspoiled dark skies (dependent on moon phase)
  • Learn how you can become a ‘turtle ambassador’, and help our guides collect valuable data on turtle nesting activity on the Ningaloo Coast
  • Sunset viewing with drinks and nibbles prepared by your guide
  • Small group tour, with a maximum of 10 participants

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE TOUR?

  • Qualified and informative guide
  • Snacks and a beverage to enjoy while watching the sunset
  • Binoculars and star maps for star gazing
  • Red lights for viewing wildlife at night without disturbance
  • Pick up/drop off from your Exmouth accommodation

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

  • Drinking water
  • Enclosed footwear ( this is essential , as we are walking around on the beach at night)
  • Please come dressed in clothing suitable for crawling on the beach in sand, and bring a warmer layer for after sunset

Please Note:

  • No artificial light is to be used during the turtle nesting portion of this tour. This includes phone/camera screens. Your guide will have a red light to use, this minimises disturbance to wildlife

Is this tour family friendly?

Yes, this is a recommended tour for families to enjoy together as it is suitable for the whole family. However, observing nesting turtles can require us to be patient and sit relatively still to be successful, so 5 years old is our minimum age for children

How many people will be on the tour?

We will run the tour with a minimum of 6 people, and usually have no more than 10 people. We can cater for larger groups and provide customised tours, please  contact us  for more info.

What if I am physically unable to crawl in the sand?

If you are unable to crawl in the sand to watch a nesting turtle lay her eggs up close, it is possible to observe from further back without crawling.

Do I need to bring a torch to enjoy this tour?

No, we won’t be using torches on this tour, as artificial light can disturb the natural behaviour of nesting turtles. Your guide will provide a red light for the group, which minimises disturbance to wildlife.

Can I bring my camera or phone to take photos?

Yes, the sunset is definitely worth taking photos of. However, once we walk onto the beach, we recommend leaving your phone or camera locked securely in our van. This is because we will be crawling through the sand, and the artificial light of your phone or camera screen could potentially disturb the nesting activity of the turtles. If you must bring your phone, you will need to download a red light app, so your screen emits a red light to minimise disturbance.

Why do I need to wear enclosed footwear?

We will be walking on the beach in the dark, where there is a risk of stepping on sharp objects like shells, rocks, coral debris and vegetation. It is non-negotiable that our guests and guides wear enclosed footwear -  if you happen to injure your foot during this tour, we would have to use an artificial light source to assess and treat your injury, which would compromise the rest of the tour.

Ancient Bones

Tell the story of ningaloo.

Materials found in rock shelters and caves on the Cape Range Peninsula indicate Aboriginal people have been living in the Ningaloo region for over 30,000 years. These sites provide some the oldest dated evidence of occupation in Australia. A Thylacine jawbone recovered from the coals of an ancient firepit, points to the continuous connection Aboriginal people have with the Ningaloo coastline.
