Losing luggage before (or after) a trip can put a damper on any experience. While there is no way to prevent airlines from misplacing your luggage, using a luggage tracker is one of the best travel hacks for making the process easier if your suitcase doesn’t make it on a flight.

To recommend the best luggage trackers on the market, we tested eight different devices from trusted tech brands. After flying with all of the luggage trackers, we chose the top three trackers that were effortless to set up, accurately located our luggage, and were extremely useful for offering peace of mind while traveling. Our top pick might surprise you, so keep reading to learn more about what qualities we looked for in a luggage tag.

Best Overall

Eufy smarttrack link.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Accuracy 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

It pairs seamlessly with an iPhone and costs much less than AirTags.

The locator sound on the device could be louder.

Eufy’s luggage tracker edged out the popular Apple AirTags during testing by impressing us with the same (if not slightly better) features at a much lower price point. The device came ready to go and all we had to do was open the Find My app on an iPhone and the tracker automatically connected for hassle-free setup. Throughout our four-month tests, we used the tracker on eight different flights and every time we could see that our luggage was on the airplane before take-off, providing peace of mind en route to our final destination. In between trips, we simply left the tracker in the suitcase, so it was ready for our next adventure.

The device itself is thin and small, but not too small that it could get lost easily, so you can feel safe using it in a wallet or purse on a trip. One of our favorite traits is the hole in the upper corner that can be directly attached to a keychain or lanyard to keep track of car or house keys instead. Plus, the tracker is water-resistant and didn’t get damaged during travels, even after we tucked it into the bottom of a 50-pound checked suitcase.

Best for Everyday Use

Apple airtag.

  • Accuracy 2.5 /5
  • Functionality 4 /5
  • Design 5 /5

The device is about the size and weight of a quarter, which makes it easy to use to track all types of items.

Over the course of our four-month tests, we did have issues with location accuracy as the AirTag can lose connection quite easily.

The small size of an Apple AirTag is ideal for keeping track of your items without noticing the device is tucked away. Since the tags are about the size of a quarter, they can fit in a suitcase, purse, or wallet with ease, and the metal material feels particularly durable compared to the other plastic models we tried. Made by Apple, the device pairs to an iPhone within seconds and is tracked via the Find My app, where users can also change the name of the device if there is more than one. With the popularity of AirTags , there are tons of compatible accessories (beyond placing them in luggage), including passport covers, wallets, keychains, and wristbands for kids. The biggest downside we experienced with the AirTag is that it didn’t accurately provide the location of the luggage and it spooked us several times with messages saying that luggage was left behind while we were taxiing on the tarmac. Although the AirTag wasn’t our top pick, we still think it’s an excellent option to help prevent lost bags .

Best Subscription

Tile pro bluetooth tracker.

  • Ease of Setup 4.5 /5
  • Accuracy 4 /5

You can use this device to track items for free, but the paid subscription offers worthwhile features for some travelers.

The device requires the Tile app and it wasn’t very intuitive to navigate for setup — even after four months of testing, we found the separate app to be annoying.

The Tile Pro Bluetooth Tracker offers the same basic functionality as the other devices we tried, including the ability to see the location of the device on an app. However, frequent fliers will appreciate the ability to upgrade the features of this device by getting one of the two premium plans offered by Tile that cost $30 or $100 per year depending on the plan (you can get the first year for free when you purchase the tracker through Tile). The premium subscription comes with smart alerts to tell you when the device isn’t in range, 30-day location history, and reimbursement for lost items that Tile can’t track with options for $100 or $1,000 reimbursement for either the premium or premium protection plan.

For travelers who just want to use the Tile tracker as is, we were impressed with the durable and functional design of the plastic fob. It comes with a hole in it so you can use it for keys and wallets along with luggage, too. We had some slight issues setting up the device with the Tile app, but once we started messing around with it, it got easier to navigate over time.

The Details: 2.32 x 1.32 x 0.3 inches | Replaceable lithium metal batteries | Subscription fee | Android, iOS, and Smart Home compatible | Water-resistant

Best for Android Users

Samsung galaxy smarttag2.

It's easy to use and comes with a keychain that you can attach to just about any item.

The button is quite sensitive, so you may accidentally trigger the alarm if it's in a bag, purse, or pocket.

For Android users who are looking for a luggage tracker than can be used while on vacation and for everyday needs, the latest SmartTag from Samsung is a great choice. While it does require an app to use, the set-up process was easy and intuitive. Plus, there is no subscription required to use the SmartTag2 and the battery lasts over 500 days, so you really don't need to think of the device often after you attach it to your suitcase, purse, bag, or keys.

Throughout our tests, the device was very accurate for tracking location and it never lost connection. It's also small and lightweight, so you can easily attach it to just about any item you may want to track. The SmartTag also comes with a case and keychain for extra durability and convenience.

The Details: 2.06 x 1.13 x 0.31 inches | Replaceable lithium metal batteries | Android | Water-resistant

Other Luggage Trackers We Liked

The luggage tracker highlighted below didn’t quite make the cut, but we’re giving it an honorable mention after a solid performance in testing.

Dynotag Brushed Stainless Steel Smart Tag : This luggage tag isn’t technically a tracker since there isn’t a feature to locate the device, but if someone found it, the QR code would easily put them into contact with the owner of the luggage.

To test eight luggage trackers, we traveled with every device in a checked bag over the course of four months to see how well each one performed based on ease of use, functionality, accuracy, and design. We also tested some of the trackers for everyday use to keep track of wallets, keychains, and headphones.

First, we set up each device according to the instructions (or lack thereof) to see how easy or difficult it was to get started. After setting up the devices, we placed them in checked luggage and flew to various destinations, including routes with multiple layovers, to ensure our luggage made it onto the flights. In the end, our favorite luggage trackers were simple and intuitive to set up, accurately displayed the location of the item, and had a sleek and functional design meant for tracking luggage and other items while traveling.

Tips for Buying a Luggage Tracker

Make sure it’s compatible with your device.

The tricky thing about buying a luggage tracker is that not all of them are compatible with all operating systems. In general, most trackers can connect with just iOS or Android, but there are a few options that can connect with both. It’s almost always listed in the specifications section of the product so you’ll want to double-check before purchasing a tracker.

Consider where and how you’ll be using it

Tracking devices are ideal for luggage, but they can also work well for keys, wallets, passports, purses, and more whether you’re on the road or at home. For travelers looking for a tracking device for wallets and passports, we recommend the Apple AirTag since there are tons of travel accessories made to hold the device and they are also slim enough to fit anywhere. For keys or AirPods, consider getting a tag with a hole designed for attaching the device to keychains or rings.

Luggage trackers use Bluetooth and GPS signaling to relay the location of the device back to a phone or tablet. Even if you’re thousands of miles away, the tracker can usually display a location on a map on your device, which is particularly useful if your luggage gets lost in transit .

Although luggage trackers often have lithium batteries, they are still allowed in checked and carry-on bags. The FAA doesn’t allow rechargeable lithium batteries with more than 100 watt hours per battery, but, luckily, tracking devices have less than that.

The Best Luggage Tags

Our six choices for best luggage tags displayed on a wooden surface

By Geoffrey Morrison

No matter what kind of bag you carry on your travels, a luggage tag will help you identify it quickly and get it back should it go astray.

A good luggage tag will be strong enough to survive airline baggage tossers and distinctive enough to stand out in a sea of black suitcases. We chose several that combine toughness and visual flair and that suit a wide range of budgets and styles.

All the luggage tags we selected should stay put through multiple adventures and be recognizable at a glance. But we also have options for a range of personal styles and travel needs.

We have picks that will either shield your contact information from view or display it openly, that are brightly colored or muted, and that hold a business card or let you write in your information. We also looked at what electronic smart luggage tags can and can’t do —and why most people are better off skipping them.

The research

A luggage tag for almost any trip: ovener silicone luggage tag, also consider: famavala 2x luggage tags, the best metal tag: cpacc aluminum luggage tags, best to stand out in a crowd: art of travel neoprene designer luggage tags, should you get a smart luggage tag, how we picked and tested, the competition.

The Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag, our pick for the best luggage tag, shown on a wooden background

Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag

Strong and easy to see.

Rugged silicone and a metal cable mean this tag (which comes two to a pack) may well outlive your luggage. The brightly colored case displays its owner’s name but keeps other personal information out of sight.

Buying Options

Get this if: You travel a lot and want a hard-wearing tag with easy-to-spot vivid colors that also keeps contact information—except for your name—under wraps.

Why it's great: The Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag has everything we’re looking for in a basic luggage tag. It is simple and inexpensive, and thanks to its tough materials and strong construction it will likely last as long (or maybe even longer) than your luggage. The silicone body seems nearly indestructible and is available in six bright colors as well as black and gray (you get two tags per pack). While other tags also feature metal cables, this tag has a metal grommet to keep the cable from eventually wearing through the silicone case.

A narrow window in the silicone lets only your name be visible—your address and contact information isn’t flashed to your fellow passengers.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: To fully access the info card, you have to unscrew and remove the metal strap. This lets the card slide out of the case. Most luggage tags we tested secure their info card in this way. It’s not a difficult or time-consuming process, but it is an extra step compared with tags that display all of your information openly. Still, for someone who wants to keep their contact information out of view, the extra step is worth it. On one of our samples, the metal grommet was loose, but on our second set they were fine.

Colors: orange, black, blue, green, red, yellow, purple, gray

The Famavala 2x Luggage Tag shown here with a faux-leather antique map print and a metal cable to attach the tag to one's suitcase

Famavala 2x Luggage Tags

Stylish and reasonably rugged.

The plastic “leather” body of these tags is almost as strong as silicone and keeps your personal information out of view. If you prefer distinctive patterns over neon-bright colors, these are a good choice.

Get this if: You want tags that are tough like the Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag and also keep your contact information shielded from casual passers-by, but you find the Ovener’s colors just too bright.

Why it's great: The Famavala 2x Luggage Tags are almost as tough as the Ovener, but their synthetic-leather bodies come in a range of decorative patterns instead of solid colors. The four sets of designs incorporate elements of old maps, space scenes, and psychedelic florals. As with the Ovener, each tag has a metal cable that is unlikely to break or wear out. But while the Ovener’s cable passes through a metal grommet, this tag’s cable passes through its body directly and could wear through it over time.

All your info is behind a small magnetically secured flap, hidden from casual view. Unlike the Ovener, the Famavala hides your name as well as your other personal information. You can view that information without taking apart the tag, however. If you’re looking for something distinctive and that will last, but isn’t so Day-Glo as the Ovener, this is a great option.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Though more ornate than the Ovener, these tags are not quite as noticeable from a distance. The metal cable could conceivably, if yanked hard enough, rip right through the narrowest part of the plastic body.

Styles: about half a dozen multi-colored designs

The CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tag, shown here in blue on a wooden surface

CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags

All-metal toughness.

These metal luggage tags are as tough as tags made of silicone and hide everything but your name. They are more likely to scratch either paint or people, though.

Get this if: You’re metal, or you want your luggage tag to be. Like the Ovener, these tags hide your personal information (except for your name) from view and are tough enough to stand up to years of wear and tear.

Why it's great: Generally speaking, we’re not big fans of metal luggage tags. Their hard edges can catch on fabric and could scratch paint or people. (These aren’t necessarily likely scenarios, just more likely than with our picks made of silicone or plastic.) If you do opt for metal tags, we suggest going with CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags . Each has an aluminum alloy body and a stainless steel cable that feels very secure. They offer a nearly identical feel and design as metal tags that cost several times more.

This tag comes in sets of either two or five tags (all the same color) and a set of seven tags (each a different color). It’s offered in a variety of hues, including bright options for visibility on the luggage carousel as well as ones that would blend into their surroundings.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like the Ovener tag, this tag forces you to unscrew the strap’s clasp and take apart the tag to read the card inside. This isn’t some huge, laborious task, but it does take a few steps.

Colors: red, black, blue, gold, green, pink, silver

The Art of the Travel Neoprene Designer Luggage Tag featuring an abstract mountain and sun design, displayed to show the luggage tag's Name, Address, Email and Telephone Number fields

Art of Travel Neoprene Designer Luggage Tags

A whimsical tag.

This simple, stretchy tag comes in nine designs by several artists and can add some beauty and playfulness to your luggage ID.

Get this if: You find other tags boring and want something artsy to decorate your luggage. Also, if you prefer a tag that shows your information at a glance, instead of hiding it behind a cover.

Why it's great: The Art of Travel Designer Luggage Tags are probably the most lively looking luggage tags we tested. Nine designs are available from six artists in a variety of styles. You wrap the single-piece neoprene tag around the suitcase handle (or elsewhere) and tuck the label end through the loop end, pulling it taut. The neoprene is unlikely to tear, and the edges are well-stitched. It might not hold up for as long as our silicone or metal picks, but it should still last for several years of travel.

The information portion is fairly simple--it’s just a small, clear-plastic card in a clear-plastic pocket that’s always visible. Because the card, too, is clear, you can still see the design through the card. Also, the card seems to stick slightly to its holder, which makes it stay more securely.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Unlike our other picks, this one doesn’t hide your personal information. But as the supplied info card is clear plastic, the words can be hard to distinguish from the background pattern at a distance, even though your info isn’t hidden. There’s also no closure to the card pocket, although we didn’t have issues with the card falling out. The loop-through design feels fairly secure, though not as secure as a screw-on metal cable or a buckled strap.

Styles: about nine different designs from about half a dozen artists (designs and artists can change periodically)

We think a luggage tag containing a card with information printed on it is the best option for most travelers. There are, however, also a variety of smart luggage tags—that is, electronic devices meant to help you locate your luggage when it’s lost. After surveying the different types of smart tags out there, though, we didn’t find any that work well enough for us to recommend them for regular use on your luggage.

A common type of smart tag uses Bluetooth tracking to locate your luggage. In our research, we found the best Bluetooth trackers are the Apple AirTag (for iOS users) and the Tile system (for Android users). We also liked the Tile Slim and the Tile Sticker. These small, battery-powered devices pair with your phone. When the tracker gets far enough from your phone to break the connection, the Find My or Tile app notes where you were when it lost contact—the idea being that this is the “last seen” location. If you go back to where the phone last “saw” the tracker, hopefully you’ll be able to actually retrieve the tracker (and whatever it’s attached to).

The advantage of the AirTag over the Tile—as well as over any smart luggage tag—comes in what happens next. You can track it via Apple’s Find My app, which uses the Bluetooth in every iPhone, iPad, and Mac that’s on the network to passively and anonymously find lost iPhones, Macs, and, yes, AirTags. In practical terms, this means if you leave your AirTag-equipped suitcase on an airport shuttle, for example, as long as someone else on the shuttle has an Apple device, the suitcase’s location will be reported to you (and the person with the iPhone or other Apple device who identified it will never know). Although Tile’s trackers work the same way, they do so on a far smaller scale—given that about a billion Apple devices in the world are opted into the Find My network, it’s much more likely that the shuttle rider one seat back has an iPhone than a Tile. And the odds against a smart luggage tag’s tracker having a user network anywhere near as large as Apple’s are, well, astronomical.

The other smart tag options

In addition to Bluetooth trackers, there are a few other types of smart tags out there, none of which we recommend.

There are smart tags with QR codes or unique website addresses that claim to be smartphone-friendly. We felt these were the exact opposite, requiring the person who finds your luggage to be smartphone or Web literate, which, although likely, is not guaranteed. Also, it adds an extra, and in our opinion unnecessary, step between the person who finds your luggage and your info. If you don’t want to put your home address where everyone can see it, don’t: A phone number or email address should suffice.

There are also a handful of RFID luggage tags on the market, but like the QR code and other smart luggage tags it requires the finder of the lost luggage to have technical knowledge and, in the case of RFID, a special reader. Some airlines use RFID to track luggage, but unless you only fly with that airline and you’re positive the tag you’re getting works with their equipment, it seems an unnecessary cost for something that will rarely help.

And now for the creepy bit. There are tracking devices that you can use to find your luggage anywhere. These devices typically cost over a hundred dollars and require a monthly fee, often $25 to $50. This is because instead of connecting to your phone via Bluetooth, they connect with cell towers directly, which costs money. They’re essentially a smartphone, without the phone. Or the smarts.

In addition to being expensive, they also have the potential to be extraordinarily creepy. Each company selling these devices mentions that it can be used to track other things. Like your car, or your purse … or someone else’s car, or someone else’s purse. The ease to which these could be misused to track someone’s movement gives us significant unease about recommending any product of this type.

Given that there are countless luggage tags on the market, we stuck with the best-reviewed and most popular options from Amazon and well-known travel companies. There are plenty of choices to fit specific styles, but we were looking for a few baseline features important in any luggage tag. For instance, we felt that a sturdy tag was a must, given that it would have to survive being grabbed by not just you but also baggage handlers, cabbies and ride-hail drivers, and hotel employees. The fail point for nearly every tag is the strap or cable that connects it with the luggage, so we looked for a strap that both was firmly attached and could withstand regular use without breaking.

We picked options for tags to stand out or blend in—whether you like one or the other will depend on your personal style preferences. We were split on how important it is to hide your extended contact information, such as anything other than your name. Most of our picks ended up hiding this information from casual view, but we also have an option for people who want their info freely visible.

We sorted through more than 40 tags to figure out the best mix of visually interesting, sturdy, and otherwise worthy-seeming tags. Once the 14 most promising candidates were in hand, I tugged and smashed all our finalists, looking for potential fail points. Generally speaking, as mentioned above, where the strap meets the body is the most likely fail point. In some cases, it’s the strap itself. All our picks have straps that are as solid and secure as their particular material and type will allow. Which is to say, all leather straps will wear, and all plastic straps will likely become more brittle with age. Metal cables are the strongest, but they too might snap or even wear through the body of the tag. It’s something to keep an eye on if you have these tags for several years. If you want something indestructible, the tags with metal straps should wear the best. (Or you can get your own to add to any tag here.)

I also set up and tested the old Tile Pro and Slim to see if they’d work with luggage tags. Since Bluetooth range will vary significantly with how much material or walls are between you and the Tile, your specific mobile device, and so on, we didn’t try to verify Tile’s claims on range, other than that in the real world it will be much less than the ranges Tile claims.

Arlo Skye offered a leather tag with a comparable price to our former leather pick from Tumi, but it was available in a more sedate black, gray, and beige. As of fall 2023, the black and beige are back in stock, though the gray is still sold out.

The Talonport Bag Tag seemed as durable as the CPACC Aluminum tag and came with both a leather strap and a metal one. It also has a lifetime replacement guarantee. However, it was a lot more expensive than the CPACC.

The Tufftaag has sharper metal edges than the other metal options we considered, which didn’t seem ideal. This was a former pick of ours, and in our long-term testing we found that it is as rugged as it seems. It also has space for multiple address cards, which one tester found convenient. For most people, though, the soft silicone of the Ovener is the better option, and if you still want metal, the CPACC is just as good but less expensive.

We used to recommend tags from Tumi and Incase, but both have been discontinued.

You know that feeling when you’re finally in the baggage claim area of your destination airport and a million identical suitcases pass you by — leaving you with no idea if any of them are yours?

Playing luggage bingo at the end of a long journey is never fun, and without an easily identifiable luggage tag, you could be playing it for some time to come.

Always tag your luggage, folks! Without a tag, your personal items could end up in someone else’s hands — or worse still, in another country. Name them to claim them!

Here’s how to make sure your luggage ends up in the right hands: yours.

Your luggage tags should be several things: easy to read, easy to recognize, and well-attached to your baggage. After all, your tag is of no use to you if it comes off before it’s even reached the hold.

Easy To See

Luggage Tags

If your tag isn’t visible enough to be seen as it spins along the carousel, is it even worth having? Whether it’s brightly colored or just oversized, visibility is vital when it comes to identifying your luggage.

Easy To Read

Easy to read luggage tag

The other great reason for strapping some sort of ID on your suitcase is that it offers a great way to name your luggage as your own. Your tags should clearly display your name, contact number or email, or other personal details.

Robust and Hard-wearing

Hardwearing luggage tag

Let’s be honest: airport handlers don’t treat our bags with as much love and care as we’d like. Whether it’s a designer suitcase or a much-loved old rucksack, they all get thrown onto the plane and off again without a second thought for their well-being.

This presents a risk for our luggage tags, too. All that rough and tumble can lead to the demise of delicate tags, and thin or paper-based tags can easily become completely separated from your luggage.

Hot Tip: Go for tags made of more durable materials like plastic, metal, or leather — and forget about those paper ones the airline gives you.

Well-secured

Well secured luggage tag

The way you attach your tag is also important. Keeping your tag firmly fixed to your luggage is kind of the whole point, so forgo flimsy materials and stick to heavyweight attachment pieces like leather or even steel — and find options that are flexible but firm.

Completely Unique

Whether you want a 5-inch Darth Vader overseeing your belongings or something more low-key, individuality is important. Find tags that look a bit different, and don’t just choose the one the suitcase manufacturer recommends — or you’ll soon find yourself trying to locate your case in a sea of identical ones, all with matching tags on them.

Better Than Anyone Else’s

Yes, we’re going there! Sometimes you need to step up your game to remain unique. By this we mean, it’s absolutely OK to show just how cool you are by securing a super-duper, tech-heavy luggage tag to your case next time you travel 🙂

Smart luggage tags are an actual thing — and they can help you locate your luggage by using Bluetooth (or other mystical tracking devices) that let you keep tabs on your tags and luggage at all times.

The 11 Best Luggage Tags on the Market

Not all luggage tags are created equal — which in this case is good because you want yours to be special, unique, and oh-so-easy to spot from a mile away.

When it comes to practicality and durability, some are miles ahead of others. Here are some of the very best luggage tags your money can buy:

  • Shacke Initial Luggage Tag

Big, bold, bright, and rubbery, these tags can be personalized to feature your own initial . Waiting to see your special letter whiz past you on the luggage carousel adds a touch of child-like excitement to your baggage collection experience.

Not only are these available in this beautiful green color, but they also have an awesome rubberiness about them, making them nice to fiddle with while you wait to check your baggage in.

Shacke offers these luggage tags in a few other colors, too. And just to be certain your personalized tag doesn’t become separated from your bag, these little beauties are attached using a bendable metal chain that’s guaranteed to stay put.

On the reverse side, there is the usual space for inputting your name, address, phone number, etc. — so should your luggage go somewhere without you, it can easily be reunited.

What We Like

  • Bright and easy to spot on the carousel

What We Don’t Like

  • The ID card can fall out easily if bent
  • TUFFTAAG Travel ID Bag Tag

A fierce name for an awesome product, these luggage tags are guaranteed to withstand the harsh conditions of worldwide travel. Whether you’re circumnavigating the globe — or simply looking for a decent tag that will stop your vacation clothing from heading for a different resort — these guys have you covered.

Made from reinforced aluminum and complete with a sturdy steel cable that attaches to your luggage, there isn’t much that can tear these tags away from your suitcase once fastened.

Designed with the more upwardly mobile traveler in mind, TUFFTAAGs are just the right size to hold a business card. If you’re between high-powered positions right now, you can simply print your name and contact details using the PDF included.

They come in a huge array of colors, so personalizing is easy. These tags also come with rather shouty “not your bag” stickers — which are probably really useful as long as nobody else on your flight has them, too.

  • Fits a standard-size business card

Tile Mate Essentials Bluetooth Tracker 4 Pack

Want to look supercool when you collect your luggage? Then let us present the Tile Mate Essentials Bluetooth tracker set. This is a set of tags that can be attached to your luggage, slipped inside your wallet, or even stuck to an item, such as your cell phone.

For locating luggage, simply attach the Tile to your bag and activate the app on your smartphone. Once the Tile is within 100 feet of your Bluetooth signal, it will locate your bag and announce it to you with a rather loud sound.

The Tile Tags come with a precut hole for attaching to your luggage — but these tags are so advanced, you can also just drop them inside your bag and the tracker will still be able to find them . You’ll look like a rockstar around the carousel as your phone beeps to announce the arrival of your luggage!

These aren’t just for travel either — you can use them around the home or office to locate your phone or other easy-to-misplace items, and Tile can even tell you where you last left something.

Despite being a great bit of tech, you would still need some form of alternative luggage tag so airport staff can identify your name and address if there’s a mistake with handling your luggage.

  • Handy for locating your luggage when you can’t see it
  • Requires app location services to be activated all the time

Made from anodized aluminum, the Dynotag is waterproof and weatherproof, and the strong metal loop will ensure it stays firmly attached to your luggage. While this may not be the most easily identifiable tag on the carousel, it is without a doubt one of the most tech-savvy tags out there.

Having no personal details in sight helps protect you from identity theft. And an easily set up find function helps locate your suitcase using GPS-assisted tag view, which can access logs and maps — and even email you the location of your luggage as you travel.

For a luggage tag, this offers an impressive balance of security and functionality. The manufacturers claim their patented DynoIQ technology is some of the best on the market when it comes to locating your belongings, and we think it looks pretty awesome, too.

  • Protects against identity theft
  • The metal material can bend

These particular tag comes in 3 different colors and can be attached using the stainless steel loop (or thrown inside your bag for added security).

You don’t even have to be trotting the globe to enjoy the location-finding benefits of the Dynotag. You can attach them to your phone, your kid’s backpack, or anything else that’s inherently mobile — the service will still alert you when your items have been found.

  • Finders are motivated to report your found bag with a reward
  • Doesn’t have a built-in GPS tracker
  • Talenport Leather Luggage Tags

These leather tags aren’t chipped and won’t work with your Bluetooth, but they will look super smart when attached to your suitcase. Made from genuine leather, these add an upscale feel to your overnight bag, making you look like a frequent flyer with class.

The privacy flap comes as standard, so you can hide your personal details from fellow travelers and airport staff as you make your way on your next executive trip around the world.

Also, we think the Talonport logo looks like something you’d find on a premium car brand, and the red stripe gives an air of exclusivity that sets it apart from plain leather tags. It might be a bit showy, but it’s still a hard-wearing luggage tag that comes with a lifetime guarantee .

  • Made from genuine leather
  • Your personal information is easily accessible

Away The Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: It folds to keep your personal details concealed.

What You Should Know: Subtle colorways can be hard to see.

When searching for the best luggage tags to meet the needs of your next trip, keeping your personal information safe probably came up. Sometimes, a simple folding label is all you need. The Away Luggage Tags fold in the center to ensure your address and phone number aren't displayed to the world. Plus, there are a few fun colorways to choose from.

It comes with a paper sheet to write your information inside, or you can print something on your printer at home. This luggage tag is crafted from leather, which looks and feels professional. The attachment strap isn't attached to the tag itself, which makes putting it on more straightforward, but it means there's a chance you could lose it in between trips.

Finding your luggage is a lot easier with suitcase tags like these, whether you're traveling for work or pleasure.

RIMOWA Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Lots of colorway options.

What You Should Know: If you pick a vibrant color, it might not match your luggage.

If you’re looking for something as vibrant as your personality, look no further than the Rimowa Luggage Tag. At the time of writing, there are nine colorway options, many of which are fun and eye-catching. Choosing something this distinctive makes it easy to find your bag at the luggage claim; however, if you update your bag, you run the risk of clashing colors.

These luggage identifiers don’t come with a piece of paper to write your information onto and slot back inside, which is a bummer. However, the Nappa leather is sleek, they’re crafted in Italy, and you can customize what information you want on the identifier if you make it yourself.

If you want something to brighten your mood at the airport baggage claim, these might be the best luggage tags for you!

MIFFLIN Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Simple design at a budget price.

What You Should Know: Not unique looking, long-term durability concerns.

If you’re traveling with a group or have multiple pieces of luggage you want to tag, the best luggage tags for you are probably budget-friendly. The Mifflin tags come in various pack sizes and colors to meet your needs. The materials are hard plastic that scuffs up reasonably easily. However, coming in at under $10 for three, we aren’t too surprised.

These little cute luggage tags come with a piece of paper to write your information on, so all you need is a writing utensil. The attachment loops give us longevity concerns; however, we haven’t broken any so far.

If you’re looking for luggage tags on a budget, look no further.

ban.do Getaway Suitcase Tag

Why We Like It: Fun colorways and designs.

What You Should Know: Not many minimalist options.

Even if you opt for a minimalist-looking rolling luggage set, there’s nothing wrong with spicing up your life with a vibrant design. The ban.do Getaway Leather Luggage Tag comes in a handful of fun patterns, some of which have fun sayings. They’re crafted from vegan leather, so no animal products were used to create them.

If you want minimalism over everything, these might not be the best luggage tags for you. However, for folks who like finding gear that makes them stand out in the crowd, ban.do has some cute luggage tags you might enjoy. Personal favorites in the office are Rainbow Stripe and Superbloom!

Theys come with a slip to write your information on, and it’s covered by a piece of material that secures with a button, so your digits aren’t out there in the world while you’re exploring it.

Longchamp Le Foulonne Leather Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: The leather grain is sleek but professional.

What You Should Know: The leather look isn’t for everyone.

If you’re looking for the best luggage tags that look professional and come in a handful of colorways, check out the Longchamp LE FOULONNÉ Leather Luggage Tag. The matte leather exterior looks sleek and fun to play with while waiting to check your bag.

The tag secures using a pin buckle. The strap doesn’t feel super durable; however, we’ve had no issues with it breaking. There’s no paper to write your name on included, so you’ll have to make your own. This takes some time but ensures you can maximize the space and only put the information you want to on there.

For a fancier look, these are some of the best luggage tags for airline travel!

Travelambo Faux Leather Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Budget price and loads of colorway options.

What You Should Know: Long-term durability concerns.

Sometimes simplicity is all you need, especially when searching for the best luggage tag for you. The Travelambo Luggage Tags offer a basic design that’s easy to use and comes at a budget-friendly price.

At the time of writing, there are three dozen color options, ranging from black to sparkly pink. The packs come with two, so you can share one with your partner or save one for later if your first one breaks.

At less than $10, durability is bound to be an issue. However, we have no problems to report so far. They’re not well suited for more durable adventures but will work for most other trips.

Boarding Pass NYC A Pair of Custom Brown Leather Luggage Tags

If you’re looking for a set of custom luggage tags that will make you the envy of all the travelers waiting to check their bags in, look no further than the Boarding Pass Custom Leather Luggage Tags. There are a few colors, so you can find a model that fits your vibe.

Your luggage will stand out if it isn’t as fancy as the tag. However, we’ve found they go well with many travel backpacks we’ve reviewed here at Pack Hacker. Plus, you can customize them with your information, so you don’t have to worry about writing everything down.

If you change your address, you will have to get new tags. However, if you keep the same phone number, you can put that only on the leather. If you’re looking for something unique, these might be the best luggage tags for you.

Apple AirTag Leather Loop

Why We Like It: You can track your luggage anywhere.

What You Should Know: Easy for thieves to see.

In the modern technological age, you don’t necessarily need to write anything down to make your luggage easy to find. With the rise of tracking devices, you can attach one to your luggage to ensure you know where it is from boarding to pickup. This AirTag luggage tag is easy to use and durable for your next adventure.

It’s crafted from leather, with a sleek look that feels just as comfortable in first class as in the back of a pickup truck. The AirTag isn’t included, so you’ll have to purchase that too.

If you don’t want to place it on the pack’s exterior, you can put it inside your bag instead. Plus, once you arrive, you can attach your AirTag to other gear you don’t want to lose, like your daypack or sling .

TUMI Accent Kit

Why We Like It: Comes with everything you need to help you find your luggage.

What You Should Know: A bit pricey for what you get.

If you’re looking for more than just a set of luggage tags, Tumi has you covered. Their Accent Kit has two monogram patches, a leather handle wrap, a luggage tag, and eight leather zipper pulls. They all match—so your gear will go together nicely.

If you only want the luggage tag, getting the set isn’t the most economical option. However, for those looking to take their pack customization level at the airport game to the next level, look no further. It’s a little pricey for something simple, but sometimes the small things are worth paying for.

The set is designed to work with Tumi luggage but will work with most travel backpacks and daypacks.

WaterField Designs AirTag Leather Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: It can hold an AirTag and your personal information.

What You Should Know: Not a lot of variety when it comes to colorways.

If you’re set on having a classic-looking luggage tag but want the modern conveniences of an AirTag, the Waterfield AirTag Leather Luggage Tag was made for you. In addition to having your information on a placard, there’s a dedicated spot to stow your AirTag so that you know your luggage made it onto the plane, when it starts spinning around the baggage area, and where it went off to should it be stolen.

The tag is crafted from leather, which is durable, looks sleek, and is comfortable to hold. Your personal information is hidden behind a flap of leather that secures so nobody can look you up without a bit of effort. Plus, there are a few leather colors to choose from, so you can find the best luggage tags for your style. The variety isn’t anything to write home about, but we’re happy enough with Waterfield’s high-quality leather materials.

This model is relatively large; however, it doesn’t feel too bulky when on your pack. The added peace of mind of knowing where your luggage is at all times is worth the extra grams it adds onto your back!

Kate Spade Cat I.D. Clip

Why We Like It: It’s a cat.

What You Should Know: Long-term durability might not hold up.

You might not be able to take your cats on your next trip, but you can keep them close by in spirit. The Kate Spade Cat I.d. Clip is technically designed to hold your identification card; however, it can be used as a luggage tag on the exterior or interior of your pack. The design is fun, and the odds are low that anyone else will have the same luggage tag at the baggage claim.

You’ll have to make your own information card, either by hand or with a printer, which you can design to feature pictures or drawings of your cat, so anyone who finds it knows why your bag sounds like it has dozens of exotic cat toys inside. We’re a little skeptical of the durability of the connector, but we haven’t had any issues in testing so far.

If you’re a cat lover, this might be one of the best luggage tags available for you.

Sodsay Plastic Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Budget-friendly and comes in bulk, so you have enough for the whole family.

If you’re bringing the whole family on your next trip and want to ensure you have luggage tags for everyone, the Sodsay Baggage ID Label Tags are worth looking at. There are ten in a package, so there’s enough for everyone. It’s a simple design: a thin piece of plastic that enables you to see the information written on the included card when you’re close.

When you’re further away, it’s harder to decipher what’s written, which is an excellent security feature. The tags feel durable enough; however, we’re uncertain how long the attachment loop will last. No issues to report yet, though!

There are a handful of colorways available. The brighter options are ideal for those who want to be able to see their luggage when it rolls around the baggage claim. The black option is sleek, which we dig aesthetically.

Whichever you go with, these luggage tags won’t break the bank and will ensure you can prepare the whole family!

Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Comes with multiple tags and has multiple colorway options

What You Should Know: The design can be seen as childish

If you’ve poked around Amazon while looking for the best luggage tags for your next trip, you’ve probably come across the Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag. They’re well-reviewed, come in a plethora of colorways, and are budget-friendly. Plus, the metal attachment is more durable than the leather or plastic options we’ve seen elsewhere.

There’s a small plane cutout on one side and a small slit for your name on the other. The silicone exterior material covers the rest of your information so that nobody can see your sensitive information. The exterior can pick up dust, but it’s straightforward to clean and take care of on the road.

The airplane design could be seen as childish, but we think it’s a fun way to get you in the mood for your next trip and ensures you know what it is if you find it out of context in your apartment. At the price, it’s hard to find a better simple option.

Famavala Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Unique colorway and design options.

What You Should Know: The metal attachment ring can be hard to use.

If you want your luggage tags to be as out of this world as traveling feels, the Famavala Luggage Tags are up your alley. The colorways are vibrant, trippy, and fun to look at, which will brighten your trip to the airport and add personality to your pack. With six options to choose from at the time of writing, you can find one that works for you.

The materials feel cheaper than the premium leather models we’ve tested in the past; however, you can’t go wrong with the price. We haven’t had any durability issues, which is essential to note. The metal fastener is robust and ensures the tag won’t fall off your pack, but the screw can be hard to use if you have larger hands or struggle with small objects.

The tag comes with a piece of paper to write your information on, so you don’t have to make your own, which we dig. From Bluesky to Skystar, the Famavala Luggage Tags might be the best luggage tags for you.

CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tag

Why We Like It: Durability is top-notch, and the price is spectacular.

What You Should Know: Corners are a little sharp.

Here at Pack Hacker HQ, we’ve been using CPACC Aluminum Luggage Tags for over a year. For what, you might ask? Well, that’s top-secret intel. Pack Hacker Pro Members are invited to visit us here at HQ, so your chances of getting security clearance rise dramatically if you join!

Silliness aside, these tags are durable and easy to see, thanks to their vibrant colorway. The aluminum and steel construction can handle the most rugged adventures, whether you’re crossing the desert or climbing a mountain. Similar to other metal ring attachments, it can be hard to open and close them if you have larger hands. Luckily, once you attach it, the ring won’t come undone until you unscrew it again.

A budget price and durable construction make these one of the best luggage tags on the market!

So there you have it; some of the best luggage tags to take on your next trip. Whether you’re looking for something basic or a model that works with modern technology, hopefully, you’ve found your pick!

Support TFG by using the links in our articles to shop. We receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you) so we can continue to create helpful free content. We earn from qualifying purchases made to the featured retailers. Thank you, we appreciate your support!

The TFG community has been abuzz with tips and recommendations for luggage tracking devices and tags, and many now see them as an absolute must-have travel item. Find out why you need this travel accessory, and take a look at the top reader recommendations!

Best Luggage Tag Options for Travel

Table of contents.

Air travel can, at times, be unpredictable, and with all the news of lost luggage and delayed or canceled flights, readers are taking matters into their own hands with travel luggage tags and trackers.

Why Travel with a Luggage Tag?

While cute luggage tags certainly spice up your suitcase’s look, they’re not always the most effective option if your bag were to get lost or stolen. Readers highly suggest putting a smart tag inside your suitcase so that you’ll always be able to track it with your phone and know exactly where it is.

You could also opt for a durable travel luggage tag to secure onto the outside of your suitcase, where you can include information for others to contact you with. Practical luggage tags will be made of durable materials like aluminum and provide a reliable way to write down your contact information. Some options even have QR codes for people to scan if they find your lost suitcase!

Many readers do both – use a smart tracker on the inside and a durable luggage bag tag on the outside.

How Does a Luggage Tracker Work?

Luggage trackers, or smart luggage tags , are a hot topic in the TFG community, and many readers can’t recommend them enough!

A luggage tracker is a small device that you link to your smartphone and then place inside your luggage (or on any item you want to keep track of). Then, through either GPS, Bluetooth, or Wifi, depending on the device, you can watch your suitcase be loaded onto the airplane, head to baggage claim, check in on it at your hotel, or be notified if it leaves your vicinity for whatever reason – all in real-time!

Because they’ve been such a lifesaver for readers who have lost their luggage and found it due to these devices, many now put them in their purses and other belongings, too, especially when traveling to places with a higher risk of theft or if it’s something they commonly misplace!

You’ll definitely want to be adding one of these reader favorites to your next packing list!

Apple AirTags

This Apple luggage tracker is raved about by TFG readers. You simply connect it to the Find My app, and it’ll track any belonging with incredible precision – even if you’re on a different continent! As long as someone else’s iPhone is close to your AirTag, encrypted Bluetooth technology will help you track your belonging in the app.

You can also have the AirTag play a loud sound to find your bag in a sea of others or put it in lost mode to get notified of its location whenever it’s detected in the Find My network. As a bonus, it’s both water and dust-resistant, and the battery lasts over a year, so it’s perfect for long trips or just day-to-day use! Note that these are only compatible with Apple devices.

One reader raves, “I have a total of eight now. I have them on anything of value while traveling. Even bought a case with a slot for the AirTag for my AirPods. They are my number one must-have travel item now. Sometimes the 4-pack goes on sale!” Another says, “Buy. The. AirTags! A $27 purchase prevented me from losing over $600 in belongings.”

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag

For Samsung users, the Galaxy SmartTag is the one for you. Very similar to the Apple version, this luggage tracker tag will help you locate your items through the SmartThings app.

It’ll lead you right to your suitcase as long as it’s within 390 feet, or if it’s close by, you can use the ring button to follow the sound. If your bag is out of range, you can tap into the Galaxy Find network to track it! The battery lasts up to a year, depending on the frequency of use, and users say it’s easy to change.

A reader shares, “Last month, I successfully used four Samsung Galaxy SmartTags in two different airports in Europe to track my bags. I was able to see how one bag got separated from the others in Barcelona and watch it make its way to the plane after the others arrived. It works the same way as AirTags, just with Samsung devices to ping off of.”

We’ve put together a helpful guide to get you started on choosing the right travel luggage for your next trip!

TilePro Travel Tags for Luggage (iOS and Android compatible)

The Tile luggage tracker is another popular pick that works with both iOS and Android devices. These cool luggage tags have a sleek look and a 400 ft Bluetooth range that offers precise tracking, and the Community Find option will help you pinpoint your item’s location when it’s far out of range with the help of any phone with a Tile app that’s close to your Tile!

They also have a QR code on them, so if it’s attached to your wallet or keys, others can simply scan the code to get your contact info. They’re water-resistant and have a solid battery life of one year.

A reader says, “Have used this for years. Pairs with Bluetooth on your phone. I have three Tiles, and each has a different ring with no interference. Great product for those, like me, who misplace keys constantly!”

ATUVOS Airport Luggage Tag

The Atuvos Bluetooth tracker for luggage is an excellent budget option with great reviews. Stash it in the inside of your suitcase or clip it to any important item to track it when it’s up to 400 ft away, or use the Find My app (on an iPhone) to view its most recent locations.

This Atuvos tracker is only compatible with Apple devices, and just like the AirTags, it can use any other Apple device in the vicinity of this tracker to let you know where your item is! It’s compact, durable, water-resistant, and has a loud and clear ring so you can find it easily when it’s nearby. The battery will easily last you a year, and it’ll remind you when it needs replacing.

A user says, “This thing is awesome! This gives timely ‘left behind’ alerts and has VERY reliable community find, given it has access to Apple’s Find My network. Will be buying more of these for sure.”

Pebblebee Tracking Device for Luggage

The Pebblebee Bluetooth luggage tag is another great pick for both iOS and Android users. It has an impressive Bluetooth range of 500 ft, but with the Pebblebee app or Find My network, your lost item can be tracked from any distance! It’s super compact, water-resistant, emits a loud buzzer to guide you to your items, and lasts up to six months before having to charge it again.

Users say it’s precise and really easy to use. A traveler shares, “Used it for my vacation luggage and felt confident! The app is super cool too.”

Tracki GPS Luggage Tracker

Tracki’s mini GPS tracker for luggage is incredibly accurate and will show you every single location it’s been to and exactly where it is in real-time, no matter the distance. An international SIM card is included, so even if it’s in another country, you’ll know exactly where your Tracki is. The one caveat is that there’s a $10-$20 monthly fee, but users say it’s worth it for the peace of mind — plus, you can always deactivate it whenever you’re not traveling.

The battery will last anywhere from five days to 75 days, depending on whether you’re tracking consistently or only occasionally. You can also choose to be notified when the tracker starts to move, there’s low battery, an SOS button is pressed, or it enters or leaves a Geo-fence that you’ve set!

A traveler reports, “I used this luggage GPS tracker on my trip to Iceland and the device worked well. I was able to track it at the connecting airport in the US and final destination both ways without issues. Had no issues leaving this on for 24 hours plus. Overall would recommend this device to track checked luggage.”

Chipolo One & One Spot Airport Luggage Tags

The Chipolo ONE and Chipolo ONE Spot trackers will show you your suitcase’s location on a map when it’s out of Bluetooth range, which is 200 ft, and can ring to help you spot it when it is in range! Many users compare them to the Apple Airtags, saying they’re a bit less expensive, a little louder, and have a keyring hole built in.

Chipolo ONE uses the Chipolo app, which is compatible with both Apple and Android devices, while the Chipolo ONE Spot uses the Find My app, which is only compatible with Apple devices.  Both of them are sturdy, water resistant, and have a long battery life that lasts up to a year. Another really great feature is that if you ever misplace your phone, you can double press the Chipolo to ring it!

A user shares, “This makes a loud beeping noise to locate and works very well with the Find Me app on iOS. I tested this out with my luggage to track down where it was after landing and was easily able to locate it.”

The luggage tag strap is made of steel, and the tag is made of aluminum, so you can rest assured that it’s not going anywhere! I started putting an Air Tag in my luggage for the first time this year. I have been carry on only for decades now. However, you never know if suddenly the overhead bins are full and they insist on checking your bag! Now they cannot say they don’t know where your bag is when you deplane. Air Tag to the rescue! I also recently changed my luggage tag to one that has a metal cord. No flimsy strap that accidentally gets pulled off! Thanks for all the ways we can better keep track of our luggage!

LuckyLadyMEM

Love my airtags! I have 5 now (gave the other 3 to my daughter). I store the battery in its case (on Amazon) so I have fresh batteries when I’m ready to travel.

Eva

Hi, great overview! I was wondering whether to place my Apple AirTag in my checked-in luggage, however what always stopped me was the fear that it has a battery, and all batteries are prohibited in the checked-in luggage, due to fire safety. Are the trackers than exempt from this rule? Thank you!

Alex

Hi Eva, that’s a great question. Lots of our readers have traveled with their apple AirTags in their checked luggage and no one has reported back that they’ve had any issues.

But to get the best advice we would also recommend checking directly with your airline.

Happy travels!

Ellen

If it’s a lithium ion battery then no, you can’t leave it in your checked luggage–lithium ions are the batteries that can start a fire. If it’s not, you’re OK. I have to remove the lithium battery from the charger on my Away suitcase. But definitely check with your airline!

While your photo might be at the top of the list for a split second, it won’t be long before it’s quickly moved downward. Eventually, it could be lost forever as more people click “Share”.

The five hashtags below are a little more creative than your standard fare but are still popular enough to be trending. Try these when you want to break away from the status quo and showcase your one-of-a-kind approach to travel.

1. #instapassport

Think of this as your curated Instagram passport. It’s a way to record all the places you’ve visited, and invite others to share in your travels.

The best part? You never have to worry about losing this one!

2. #postcardsfromtheworld

You might not have time to send postcards from each destination you encounter. However, with this simple travel hashtag, you’ll instantly have a collection of your favourite shots.

Invite your friends and family members to check it out, and you’ll save a ton on postage!

3. #letsgoeverywhere

Oh, darling. Let’s be adventurers!

This is a great hashtag for both solo travellers, as well as ones who globe-trot with a partner. It creates a sense of wanderlust and excitement and could even encourage someone else to get out and explore!

4. #traveldiary

Do you keep a diary or journal as you travel? It can be incredible to look back on a written record of everything you’ve seen and experienced during your time away.

However, if you’d rather live in the moment, you can save your Instagram shots with this creative hashtag. Think of it as a collective log of the places you’ve encountered.

5. #viewfromthetop

If you love hiking, then this is the hashtag for you. Save it for those mountaintop experiences that you simply can’t put into words.

This one works especially well with those sweeping panorama shots you know you’re going to take when you reach the summit.

Unique hashtags for traveling are great for finding your audience and standing out from the crowd.

Unique Travelling Hashtags

Like the list above, these next five hashtags are far from run-of-the-mill. They might not be uber-common, but they’ll put you in good company with travellers who are as passionate as you are.

6. #nevergoinghome

Most travellers will agree that home is the next stop on your itinerary. This tag relays that sentiment beautifully and firmly establishes your free spirit.

It’s especially appropriate for any type of luxury travel experience that you know you can’t recreate anywhere else, like that shot of the infinity pool fading beautifully into the sea.

7. #findyouradventure

Each person experiences travel in a different and special way. What you consider a life-changing adventure might seem trivial to someone else, and vice versa.

This hashtag embraces that individuality! Not only does it allow you to showcase your own trips, but it motivates your followers to chart their own course.

8. #getoutstayout

This hashtag might sound a little dramatic, but it’s really just zealous! In a world where so many people find themselves glued to a screen, the simple joys of going outdoors are almost archaic.

Once you head out, though, you wonder why you ever second-guessed it in the first place. This tag honours that feeling of freedom and encourages it to last as long as possible.

9. #parentswhowander

Love travelling with your little ones in tow? Once you figure out the logistics, family trips can create lifelong memories. They can even instil a love of travel in your pint-sized explorers!

This tag gives your profile a more focused slant. Not only are you people who love to travel, but you’re doing it all with a brood underfoot!

10. #droneworld

You don’t have to be a bonafide travel blogger to know that drone shots can take your content to the next level.

When they first emerged on the scene, these gadgets were high-priced and hard to find. Now, however, they’ve become more affordable and accessible. Drone videos can make even the dullest drive down the highway seem like a scene from an action movie, so invest in one and use this tag when you do!

Types of Luggage Tags

Luggage tags are fairly simple devices, but there are several different types and styles. While most luggage tags aren’t difficult to use, you may prefer a certain attachment type or overall design. Your luggage’s style, trip destination, and personal preference all factor into finding the best luggage tag.

Handle Wrap

Handle-wrap luggage tags fit around the luggage handle and are usually secured with a hook-and-loop closure. Personal identification information is stored on the inside of the tag, so it can’t be seen from the outside. Handle-wrap-style tags are available in a variety of colors and patterns, and many are customizable with your name or initials.

Magnetic luggage tags have a security flap that’s fastened with a magnet. These tags attach to the luggage with either a stainless steel wire or a fabric loop-and-buckle closure. The magnet keeps personal contact information more private yet lets you easily peek at the tag to make sure the bag is yours before claiming it.

Slip or slip-in pocket luggage tags are typically the least-expensive option. Made with a clear plastic cover and backing, they are sleeves into which you can slip a business card or card with contact information. These tags usually attach to luggage with a plastic loop. Slip-in pocket luggage tags may not be the most durable, but they’re easy to attach and can be bought in bulk.

Personalized

Your initials, last name, or a clever saying can personalize a luggage tag, making it easier to identify. Some manufacturers offer customized lettering and text colors, too. Customized tags may be priced per letter or include an extra fee based on the design intricacy. However, they can be much easier to spot at the baggage claim.

Luggage straps perform dual roles. They wrap around luggage and buckle, holding the luggage closed. The strap can be tightened, reducing the chances of personal items falling out if the luggage is dropped or if the zipper breaks. Some straps also function as luggage tags with a personalized message on them or a slot in which to put contact information. Straps also come in bright colors and patterns that are easier to spot in a sea of black suitcases.

Smart luggage tags link to a bag tracker through an app via a smartphone or through an account with the manufacturer. Logging into the app or account allows you to see the location of your luggage in real time, making it easier to track the bag when it is away from you. Different manufacturers offer different features: some put a scannable QR code on the tag that links to a unique web page with your contact information, and others rely on the bag’s finder calling the manufacturer, who then contacts you.

These tags look like a metal luggage tag but without visible contact information. Some attach to the bag’s handle, so they’re easy to find. Others are mainly a GPS tracker that’s meant to be tucked away inside the luggage. The latter type lets you know the luggage’s location but doesn’t provide contact information.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Luggage Tags

Luggage tags are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. How you travel, where you travel, and your personal preferences will help you select the best luggage tag for you. Think about durability, ease of access, and any extra security features the tag offers. It should be able to withstand some pulling, tugging, and a fall or two, since most luggage goes through a lot of shuffling and handling while traveling by air, bus, or rail before it gets back to you.

While there’s no regulation of luggage tag sizes, luggage tags usually come in eight sizes that range in width from 1 3/8 inches to 3 1/2 inches and lengths of 2 3/4 inches to 6 1/4 inches. Small, lightweight luggage tags can help prevent extra charges for oversized bags. Small tags also tend to stay out of the way while traveling. Most of the time, the tags are proportional to the size of the luggage to which it’s attached. Larger tags are sized well for crates or bigger packages.

Luggage tag materials need to hold up to varying humidity levels and temperatures. Stainless steel is resistant to changing temperatures, while rubber and plastic are better options than stainless steel or leather for dealing with water. Look for a tag that’s durable and well-made so it can withstand the weather conditions in your travel destinations.

Common luggage tag materials include:

  • Stainless steel

When it comes to design, there are many different styles of luggage tags. The first consideration may be to decide whether you want the tag to help make your luggage easy to spot with its unique colors, shapes, and patterns, or if you want a tag that blends with the luggage.

Business travelers may prefer a basic, minimal design that maintains a professional appearance and won’t stand out in a boardroom. However, casual travelers and families may prefer unique tags that make their luggage easy to identify. It’s a matter of balancing your style preferences with the amount of visibility you desire.

Some luggage tags offer a few extra features that are worth considering. For example, some magnetic tags have a metal strip where your name can be engraved.

Another feature to consider is the attachment style. How the tag attaches to your luggage makes a difference in how easy it is to secure the tag and how durable it is. For example, a stainless steel wire ring tends to be more durable than a plastic loop. Belt-with-buckle closures and hook-and-loop are other ways that luggage tags are secured.

Our Top Picks

The luggage tags recommended here earn high marks for durability, practical extra features, and quality. Faux leather, leather, plastic, and stainless steel tags are included on the list. Check out some of the best luggage tags below, and get ready to start packing your bags for that next adventure.

It’s the quality and simplicity of Travelambo Leather Luggage Bag Tags that puts them at the top of our list. Polyurethane leather has the look of leather but with better weather resistance. Thirty color options offer a rainbow of choices, so you can pick your favorite color, coordinate with family members, or keep tag colors low-key and neutral.

The tag has a double-sided contact card that allows for two sets of contact information. That gives you an advantage if your bag gets lost: if you’re not available at one address, there’s a backup. This increases your chances of receiving a call, email, or text about your bag. A simple privacy flap covers your contact information but still lets you take a peek to make sure it’s your bag. Finally, a simple but secure buckle attaches the tag to your luggage.

If you’re traveling with lots of bags or you have an entire family’s worth of luggage to tag, the TravelMore 7-pack may be just what you need. Each brightly colored tag is made of PVC silicone, so it’s water- and abrasion-resistant. The TravelMore tags attach to luggage with a simple plastic loop. A standard-size business card or the provided contact card will fit inside the double-sided design, which allows you to check either side of the tag before grabbing the bag off of the baggage claim carousel.

Some faux leather looks inexpensive, but the 11 leather colors offered by United Craft Supplies look like real leather. You can choose one of 18 designs to personalize with your name, coordinate with family or a travel group, or help make your bags stand out. Visible topstitching complements each personalized design.

The tags are water- and scratch-resistant, and a strap and buckle secures them to the luggage. Each tag includes a contact card that’s visible through a coverless clear window.

Best Leather

Swisselite genuine leather luggage tags.

Leather is often associated with luxury. With 14 color options, SwissElite leather tags let you choose a color that works with your luggage color scheme.

Each tag comes with a double-sided contact card, providing one side for a second set of contact information. A privacy flap keeps that information hidden but easy to access when claiming your bag. The tag is secured to the bag with a leather strap and a stainless steel buckle.

Best Stainless Steel

Proudguy luggage tags.

ProudGuy’s stainless steel tags are designed to resist rough treatment and stand up to vigorous travel. The 15 colors look sleek, give your bag a unique look, and add an identifiable pop of personality to your travels.

A stainless steel cable ring comes with each tag, providing an equally strong way to attach it to the bag. These tags work with a standard-size business card. However, the clear window allows contact information to be visible.

Dynotag Web Enabled Smart Aluminum Luggage Tag

Each Dynotag luggage tag comes equipped with a unique QR code specific to that tag. If someone finds your bag, they scan the code. The code shares the tag’s unique webpage that includes your contact information. If the QR code doesn’t work or the bag finder doesn’t have access to a QR code reader, Dynotag’s contact number is listed on the tag. After the company has been notified, they contact you. The tag also offers GPS-assisted tag viewing, so you can see where the tag is or has been.

Once you sign up for a Dynotag account, you can log in and change the contact information associated with the tag at any time. If your phone number or address changes, the update is easy and can be done from anywhere. There’s no subscription fee, and the tag with the accompanying account comes with a lifetime warranty. For the frequent flyer, this smart tag could make tracking your bag easy and traveling less stressful.

FAQs About Luggage Tags

When you’re planning a trip, you might not immediately think about shopping for a luggage tag. A small purchase that can have a big impact, a luggage tag can’t make your bag always show up on time, but it can help safely return your bag when it doesn’t.

Since there is a lot to consider when shopping for a luggage tag, you may still have questions. Below are a few of the most common questions and answers about luggage tags.

Q. Do I need luggage tags?

Yes, a luggage tag is recommended for anyone checking bags while traveling. Luggage tags include your contact information, making it easier to return the luggage if it gets lost. Tags also make it easier for you to identify your luggage on a baggage carousel full of similarly colored black bags.

Q. What information should be on a luggage tag?

The tag should include your name and either a phone number or email address. Your physical address isn’t absolutely necessary.

Q. Where do I attach a luggage tag?

Most luggage tags attach to the bag’s handle. However, many tags attach to zippers or any other firmly attached straps or pieces on the luggage.

How long does the battery of a luggage tracker or smart tag last?

The battery life varies depending on the device, but most can last for several weeks to a year.

Can I use multiple luggage trackers or smart tags at once?

Yes, some devices come with apps that allow you to track multiple bags at once.

Can I use an AirTag to track my luggage?

Yes, you can use an AirTag to track your luggage. Apple's AirTag is a popular option for tracking items, including luggage, due to its small size and integration with the Find My app. Simply attach the AirTag to your luggage and you'll be able to see its location on a map in the Find My app.

However, it's important to note that the AirTag does have limitations in terms of range and compatibility with non-Apple devices, so it may not be the best option for everyone. It's also important to check with your airline to ensure that the use of such devices is permitted during air travel.

Our private tours typically range from $500 - $1000 per person/per night depending on chosen hotels and room categories, vehicles used, types of tours, flight cost, time of year and other factors. Make an inquiry for a customized trip quote.

best hashtags for travel

If you’re familiar with travel accounts on Instagram, or just about any social media platform, you will know that #travel and #travelling are the most popular travel hashtags to use. However, while these are the obvious choices, they are not the best for visibility. These hashtags are used by millions of others, it is easy for your content to be drowned out.

Instead, using a mix of high volume hashtags with smaller, niche hashtags can help you stand out and also reach a large number of people.

We have gathered the top hashtags for travel to improve your Instagram following in 2022.

Make sure you use the best travel hashtags relevant to food

Food lovers, unite! An unforgettable culinary adventure doesn’t just have to exist on your tastebuds. With these hashtags, find your community of travel foodies to share experiences with and recommend new destinations for a mouthwatering trip. Since food posts are so popular, it is recommended to use a variety of tags to rise above the insta-noise.

#foodporn #worldcuisines #worldcuisine #gastronomy #tasteisuniversal #foodie #foodlover #travelthroughfood #tastetheworld #travelfood #travelfoodie #wanderlustfoodie #eatandtravel #foodplaces #foodstagram #foodblogger #instafood #foodpics #foodfeed

The best way to get your posts noticed and boost your following is by narrowing down your audience by destination. Most travelers are usually more interested in the culture and destinations of specific regions. Plus, it’s a subtle way to tell people where you are without using too many words. And you will get traffic from locals and inspired wanderlusts.

Start off with using regional travel hashtags, like #exploreasia or #EuropeTravel .

Next, you can break it down by country. For example, if you are in Malaysia, you can use hashtags like #exploremalaysia or just simply #malaysia , along with state hashtags like #kualalumpur , #sabah and #langkawi . To get even more specific, you can even tag the neighbourhood you’re in, like #mountaustinjb .

Some destinations have quirky and creative travel hashtags that truly highlight what the place has to offer. Think about any puns or specialities of the place you are visiting, like #amsterdamgram and #iamsterdam , or #balivin .

If you’re still unsure of the best travel hashtags to use for your destination, one tip is to check out the location tag and see what others are saying. You might even find an account or two to follow!

All in all, hashtags are a subtle and versatile way to find your travel community and be seen on Instagram. What are some of your top travel hashtags that we have not mentioned?

Are Travel Hashtags a Good Idea?

Using travel hashtags on your posts will ensure that you'll get more likes and engagement, because your photos will be seen by the people who want to see travel photos like yours.

Using the right travel hashtags is especially important for Instagram Reels posts and Tiktok posts. These kinds of posts are currently enjoying much more "discovery" and delivery to broader audiences.

We've paid extra attention to Hashtags for Instagram Reels and Hashtags for TikTok. Using the right hashtags for Instagram Reels and hashtags for Tiktok can help your content land on the Explore #Explore and #FYP (For You Page) pages and explode your views.

It's easy to find the most obvious and popular hashtags for travelling. People use the hashtag #travel all the time. But it is so overused that posts with this tag are often off topic, and lost in the avalanche of new posts constantly flowing in.

How to Choose the BEST Travel Hashtags

Think about a search term you might type into google, and what you would expect from the results. If you merely typed in "travel" you would not be likely to find posts about specific places, activities, and things you are looking for.

Searches are more successful when they are more specific. Posts are more successful when they use more specific hashtags. Finding the hashtags can be tricky though.

That's why we made this travel hashtag list for all your vacation Instagram and travel Tiktok posts.

PRO TIP: Hashtags are not just for getting likes, views and engagement on your own posts. Travel hashtags are the best place to start doing your own travel research. You will find recent and up to date photos and information. Oftentimes these posts are from locals and experts. You will find valuable tips, tricks and insights about a destination by doing research on Instagram and Tiktok as well as traditional research. Travel guides and blog posts are a great idea, but the freshest information about a location may be on social media.

Be sure to bookmark this post so you can return to copy/ paste travel hashtags! Our lists are constantly growing and updating.

Travel Hashtag Ideas for Your Posts

Travel hashtags can be broken down into many categories.

  • People in the photo - Who are the travelers in the photo? Do you belong to any special group of travelers or travel "tribes"? Example: #familytravel #digitalnomads #couples travel
  • Brands in the photo - Official local tourism/branded hashtags and/or gear. Example: #visitcalifornia #celebritycruise #Raybans
  • Places in the photo . Example: #Airport, #LuxuryHotel
  • Activities being done in the photo or on the vacation . Example: #hiking #yoga #winetasting
  • Seasons and holidays. Example: #SummerVacation #SpringBreak #WinterHoliday
  • Travel Themes . Example: #Getaway, #Glamping, #Spaholiday
  • Photography hashtags . Example: #travelcaptures #travelpicsdaily
  • Moods . Example: #HappyCamper, #VacationVibes

Why Hashtags Matter on Social Media

Hashtags are like the address on a letter. They tell social media platforms where/who to deliver your post to.

Everytime we like or comment on anything, algorithms are paying attention. They learn what we like, and aim to deliver more of that sort of content to us.

In order to deliver the right content to the right people, Algorithms need to know what a piece of content is about, and who it's meant for. Hashtags make that crystal clear.

Questions to Ask When Choosing Hashtags for Travel Posts

Asking yourself a few questions about your hashtags can help you be super targeted with your tag choices, and avoid hashtag spamming.

If someone were specifically searching for this hashtag, would they be delighted to find your post? Is it the content they are likely looking for?

If the answer is YES, then this a good hashtag choice.

Do the hashtags you've chosen make sense together and support each other?

If the answer is NO you may want to get rid of any extra tags. Stick to a single niche or theme to avoid confusing algorithms. Recent algorithm trends have shown that posts that stick to a single subject and closely related hashtags, tend to do better.

Are any of the hashtags sarcastic, cute or made up on the spur of the moment?

Lose these fast!

Are you using super popular, over-used hashtags?

These probably won't hurt you, but they are are unlikely to help you in Instagram feed. One or two carefully chosen popular tags may be helpful for directing Instagram Reels and Tiktok posts. Hashtags for Instagram Reels and Hashtags for TikTok are extremely important for discovery but should be super concise and used sparingly.

Do my hashtags identify a specific group of people for whom this content is relevant?

Hashtags like #FamilyTravel and #CouplesTravel and #LuxuryTraveler help further refine your travel audience and are a great idea when they are your primary focus. Niche-ing down is a great way to build engagement.

But don't use multiple groups in one post or you may defeat the purpose of the tag. Pick a team and use multiple tags for that one group rather than spread yourself too thin.

Have you included any "mood" hashtags?

While we don't have evidence to support it, it doesn't hurt to include a few hashtags with positive terms like "Happy", "Dream" "Vibes" etc in them.

Algorithms don't do feelings and rely on language signals like this to identify posts as positive or negative. Humans also react to positive messaging. So if you have the space, sprinkle some positivity.

Have you looked at the hashtag feed for that hashtag? Do you belong there?

Sometimes we think we know what a hashtag is all about... and then we look at the feed and have to take a moment. It's a good idea to get a look at the feeds you're trying to fit yourself into. If your post doesn't resonate with the audience there, or if the content is not what you think it is, you might be hurting your chances for discovery.

How Many Hashtags to Use in 2023

There is no magic formula for how many hashtags to use on social media. Other than the limits imposed by the platforms, the number is up to you. The most important thing about hashtag use with current social algorithms is to commit to your theme or niche for each post.

Consistent hashtag use and subject matter in your posting helps you to grow your authority on that subject.

When you are hashtagging a travel post, you should stick to travel hashtags and preferably clusters that are often used together such as location travel hashtags or activity type hashtags.

At one time it was ok to use any hashtags on Instagram that were accurate for your photo, even if the hashtags were unrelated to one another. The more the merrier. Currently this practice is not working. Clarity is key. Algorithms are favoring authoritative content that is easy to classify and understand.

This means that using hashtags for pets, books, fashion and beauty, along with travel hashtags (even when all those "items" are present in a photo) may result in the algorithm dropping your post for possibly hashtag spamming.

Hashtags for Tiktok and Hashtags for Instagram Reels need to be even more specific and concise.

When in doubt, pick tags from 2-3 of the above travel hashtag lists. Review the questions above and hashtag with confidence!

Why These Travel Hashtags?

Travel tags are constantly changing and evolving. In fact these 1500+ travel hashtags are just the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds of thousands more out there, and many more travel topics to explore.

We gathered these hashtags over the course of several years, looking at some of the most engaged and visible hashtags on multiple social media platforms.

Hashtag Tips

When hashtagging, it’s important not to overload or spam your posts with hashtags that don’t work and could result in you getting shadow-banned.

The trick is to use a few generic and a few niche specific hashtags to give you the best reach – just make sure they are always relevant to the photo, video or story you’ve posted.

Get The Most Out Of Your Hashtag Strategy

While it’s tempting to go for the top hashtags that have millions of posts, it’s best to keep to this smart strategy:

  • About 2 hashtags that have more than 1 million posts
  • 6 to 8 that are between 500,000 and 1 million posts
  • 6 to 8 that are between 250,000 and 500,000
  • 8 to 10 under 250,000

This gives you anywhere between 22 to 28 hashtags that you’re using, enough to give you visibility.

Instagram’s maximum recommended total for hashtags is 30.

I tend to use about 20 hashtags, as that’s my sweet spot – but for me, lately, it’s mostly home decor posts as I’m doing less travelling (that’s when this list of home decor hashtags comes in handy).

Editing Your Travel Photos

My ultimate favourite phone app for travel edits is Lightroom .

The free version is good – and you can add your own presets to it. The upgraded version gives you more controls for better editing, especially when it comes to landscape photography.

Break up your photos with some fun quotes and visuals using your nature photos – like I did here with one of my photos.

Online photo editors such as Be Funky and Pixlr also have design capabilities making them powerful one-stop photo editing and design creation tools.

150+ Very Best Travel Hashtags for Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest

We may have been compensated through an experience or products from the links and companies mentioned in this post. Thank you for supporting my small business. Please see my disclaimer for more info.

I love sharing my travel photos. Unfortunately, I feel like if I am sharing them without a proper hashtag, they aren’t quite as “cool” or “seen” as the photos other travel bloggers and photographers are posting with a hashtag. Hashtags have become very popular, and gone are the days when we knew that cute little symbol as a “pound sign” on the calculator. In this post, we’ll talk about what a hashtag is, why you want to use one, and then I’ll give you a whole list of travel hashtags. You’ve come to the right place for Facebook and Instagram Travel Hashtags!

Unraveling the mystery of the hashtag has been fun for this old grandma. I may be hip, but I’m still learning! Isn’t that part of the fun in this life? Learning new things and sharing them with others? Good news! I did the work of learning so I can share the info with you. You get to read up on the research I did for you! Let’s get into it!

What is a Hashtag Anyway?

A hashtag is that fun little crosshatch symbol that you see all over social media channels these days. Back in my day (I love saying that), a hashtag was known as a pound sign and we used it primarily to indicate weights in measurements when typing. Now, thanks to modern-day social media, including Instagram and Facebook, we call this little symbol a hashtag and it has a whole new use.

Instagram is the most popular place to use a hashtag. A post shared with a hashtag will look like this: #hashtagpost. The symbol # is followed by the words that relate to whatever it is you’re posting. If you’re posting images of travel photography, you should use hashtags with words connected to your travels and what you’re showing in your photo.

Tips for Why You Want to Use a Hashtag?

Personal use.

There are two simple answers to this. First, you can use hashtags to organize your posts and travel photos for organizational purposes. Hashtags are easily searchable on social media, especially on your Instagram account, so it’s easy to find your images back after posting them if you’ve hashtagged them. For example, if you put a common hashtag on all of your photos of your trip to Chicago with the girls, then, later on, you will easily be able to go back and search for those photos with that hashtag. If your friends all use the same hashtag, you will easily be able to find what they’ve posted as well. Choose a unique and specific hashtag, such as #smithgirlsdoChicago2022, so your images will all match in a unique and fun way.

Professional Use?

The other reason you may want to use a hashtag is to showcase what you’re posting outside of your group of friends and family. If you are considering moving into the realm of social media influencer or blogger, then your goal on social media is likely to gain followers. Hashtags are perfect for this. Why? Because people can search and follow common hashtags. Even if you aren’t looking to make money out of your posts, it can be a whole lot of fun to see one of your posts gain likes and follows. A popular hashtag, like #puremichigan, will have many followers and would be perfect to use while showcasing photos of the beauty you see when traveling through Michigan. Others who have traveled through Michigan have used this same hashtag.

What Hashtags Should I Use?

Now that we have a basic understanding of what a hashtag is and why we want to use them, let’s talk specifically about travel hashtags and get on to the list of hashtags for you to use!

How Many Hashtags Should I Use?

It is entirely up to you how many hashtags you choose to use. Generally speaking, most social media channels allow a max of thirty hashtags per post. Somewhere between nine and eleven seems to be the magic number to gain the most followers if that is your goal. Each person chooses to use their hashtags for different reasons.

The 49 Best Hashtags for the Travel and Tourism Industry

This content discusses how millennials prioritize experiences over material possessions and the importance of social media presence for travel businesses.

tag for trip

Younger generations are trading in their need for buying ‘things’ in pursuit of experiencing the world. Not to say millennials don’t spend their money on tangible stuff, but the stuff they’re spending money on is different than the generations of yesteryear. Most likely, you won’t find a 30-something’s household stocked with dish sets and porcelain figurines. Instead, you’ll find plane tickets and photographs of travels abroad. If there’s one thing millennials love as much as travel, it’s social media. After all, if they can’t post that epic selfie with Machu Picchu as the backdrop, did it ever really happen? From this, we can assess that Instagram is either fueling the travel boom, or the travel boom is fueling the use of Instagram. As such, travel and tourism businesses need a strong social media presence to stand out. Using hashtags in conjunction with social media marketing is a great way to help your business get found, as well as make a lasting impression. Using branded hashtags is a powerful marketing strategy that really works. Use these popular hashtags in your social media marketing and keep reading for a clever branded hashtag promotion idea to boost engagement with your brand.

Create a branded hashtag and encourage followers

Did you know that Instagram allows you to follow a hashtag? Create a branded hashtag that is unique to your business and entice followers by continually offering giveaways and promotions in posts using that hashtag.Much like telling your audience “Follow us on Facebook for exclusive offers,” you can do the same thing with a specific hashtag. And, offering regular giveaways and promotions will keep the audience captive - a great conduit for additional marketing. For example, in this giveaway, do you see how they’ve used #contestalert in their post? If you opt in to follow #contestalert, you’ll see any posts using that hashtag in your feed. Pretty cool, right?http://www.instagram.com/p/Bt0m-WLH-hT/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_linkSo, if you set up a branded hashtag - for the sake of this contest example, we’ll use #vresortscontestalert - and asked your audience to follow it, they will see all the posts using that hashtag. Think of the potential! Air Travel Consumer Report: January 2024 Numbers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today released its Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) on airline operational data compiled for the month of January 2024 for on-time performance, mishandled baggage, and mishandled wheelchairs and scooters. The ATCR is designed to assist consumers with information on the quality of services provided by airlines.

DOT expects that airlines will operate flights as scheduled and that when they do not, airlines will provide consumers the services consumers have been promised when a flight is canceled or delayed because of an airline issue. After a two-year DOT push to improve the passenger experience, the 10 largest airlines now guarantee meals and free rebooking on the same airline and nine guarantee hotel accommodations. Consumer-friendly information regarding airline commitments to their customers is available on the Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard at FlightRights.Gov. DOT also pushed airlines to provide fee-free family seating and rolled out a new family seating dashboard that highlights the airlines that guarantee fee-free family seating, and those of the 10 largest that do not, making it easier for parents to avoid paying junk fees to sit with their children when they fly.

In addition, DOT is improving transportation for individuals with disabilities. In July 2023, DOT finalized a rule which requires airlines to make lavatories on new, single-aisle aircraft more accessible. Then, in February 2024, DOT issued a proposal to address other barriers that Americans who use a wheelchair encounter when it comes to air travel by, among other things, mandating enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passenger with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs.

Further, when necessary, DOT takes enforcement action against airlines and ticket agents that fail to comply with the Department’s aviation consumer protection requirements. In 2023, DOT issued the largest fines in the history of the consumer protection office. This includes a $140 million penalty against Southwest Airlines for failing passengers during the 2022 holiday meltdown. That penalty, which was in addition to over $600 million DOT already ensured was refunded by Southwest to passengers, requires Southwest to establish a $90 million compensation system for future passengers affected by significant delays and cancellations. DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds to travelers since the pandemic began.

Flight Operations

The 560,352 flights operated in January 2024 were 99.56% of the 562,845 flights operated in January 2023. Operated flights in January 2024 were down 0.44% year-over-year from the 562,845 flights operated in January 2023 and down 7.18% month-over-month from 603,756 flights operated in December 2023.

"U.S. Airlines Operated Domestic Flights: January 2022-January 2024. Operated=Scheduled - Canceled"

In January 2024, the 10 marketing network carriers reported 582,425 scheduled domestic flights, 22,073 (3.8%) of which were canceled. In December 2023, airlines scheduled 606,218 domestic flights, 2,462 (1.3%) of which were canceled. In January 2023, airlines scheduled 573,877 domestic flights, 11,032 (1.9%) of which were canceled.

On January 6, 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered the grounding of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with a mid-cabin door plug installed operated by U.S. airlines or in U.S. territory. On January 24, 2024, FAA cleared all such aircraft to return to service after each aircraft operator successfully completed a new inspection process approved by the FAA. Alaska Airlines and United Airlines have informed the DOT that the grounding of the 737 MAX9 aircraft with the mid-cabin door plug installed has impacted their on-time statistics during this reporting period.

January 2024 On-Time Arrival

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 72.8%, down from both 83.9% in December 2023 and from 76.2% in January 2023.

  • Alaska Airlines Network – 64.7%
  • JetBlue Airways – 69.5%
  • American Airlines Network – 70.5%

January 2024 Flight Cancellations

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers canceled 3.8% of their scheduled domestic flights, higher than both the rate of 0.4% in December 2023 and the rate of 1.9% in January 2023.

Lowest Marketing Carrier Rates of Canceled Flights January 2024 (ATCR Table 6)

Complaints About Airline Service

The release of air travel service complaint data in the Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) has been delayed primarily because of the continued high volume of complaints against airlines and ticket agents received by the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) and the time needed to review and process these consumer complaints. The Department is investing in modernizing its system for handling consumer complaints with the support of a Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) investment to improve the customer experience for the tens of thousands of consumers who use the system each year and enable OACP to more effectively engage in oversight of the airline industry.

As DOT modernizes its system, given the continued high volume of air travel service complaints concerning airlines and ticket agents, DOT has revised how it processes consumer complaints received after June 1, 2023. From June 2023 until the date its system is modernized, DOT intends to revise the ATCR to display consumer submissions (complaints, inquiries, and opinions) as opposed to complaints for this period. The Department will continue to display civil rights complaints in the ATCR in a similar manner as before and anticipates publishing submission and civil rights complaint numbers in spring.

Tarmac Delays

In January 2024, airlines reported 71 tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights, compared to five tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights reported in December 2023. In January 2024, airlines reported six tarmac delays of more than four hours on international flights, compared to zero tarmac delays of more than four hours on international flights reported in December 2023.

Airlines are required to have and adhere to assurances that they will not allow aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours for domestic flights and four hours for international flights without providing passengers the option to deplane, subject to exceptions related to safety, security, and Air Traffic Control related reasons. An exception also exists for departure delays if the airline begins to return the aircraft to a suitable disembarkation point to deplane passengers by those times.

The Department investigates extended tarmac delays.

Mishandled Baggage

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers handled 37.4 million bags and posted a mishandled baggage rate of 0.75%, higher than both the rate of 0.50% in December 2023 and the rate of 0.73% in January 2023.

The Department began displaying the mishandled baggage data as a percentage (i.e., per 100 bags enplaned) in January 2022. This is consistent with the manner that the mishandled wheelchairs and scooters rate is calculated and displayed.     In the prior three calendar year reports (2019 to 2021), the Department calculated the mishandled baggage rate based on the number of mishandled bags per 1,000 checked bags.

Mishandled Wheelchairs and Scooters

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers reported checking 56,659 wheelchairs and scooters and mishandling 836 for a rate of 1.48% mishandled wheelchairs and scooters, higher than the rate of 1.39% mishandled in December 2023 and lower than the rate of 1.47% mishandled in January 2023.

As described earlier, in February 2024, the Department announced its proposal to strengthen its rule implementing the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) to address the serious problems that individuals with disabilities using wheelchairs and scooters face when traveling by air that impact their safety and dignity, including mishandled wheelchairs and scooters and improper transfers to and from aircraft seats, aisle chairs, and personal wheelchairs. The proposed rule would require that airlines meet strict standards in accommodating passengers with disabilities by setting new standards for prompt, safe, and dignified assistance, mandating enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passengers with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs, and outlining actions that airlines must take to protect passengers when a wheelchair is damaged during transport. The proposed rule also clarifies that damaging or delaying the return of a wheelchair is an automatic violation of the ACAA.

Bumping/Oversales

Bumping/oversales data, unlike other air carrier data, are reported quarterly rather than monthly. For the fourth quarter of 2023, the 10 U.S. reporting marketing carriers posted an involuntary denied boarding, or bumping, rate of 0.20 per 10,000 passengers, lower than both the rate of 0.35 in the third quarter of 2023 and the rate of 0.30 in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Incidents Involving Animals

As part of its IT modernization, DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) is improving the options for covered carriers to submit their monthly and annual Reports on Incidents Involving Animals During Air Transport. While the new system is being developed, OACP is permitting covered carriers to delay submission of reports on incidents involving animals during air transport. Annual data on such incidents will be published when DOT receives carriers’ complete submissions of the 2023 data.

In January 2024, carriers reported zero incidents involving the death, injury, or loss of an animal while traveling by air, equal to the zero reports filed in both December 2023 and in January 2023.

Consumers may file air travel consumer or civil rights complaints online at   https://secure.dot.gov/air-travel-complaint , or they may mail a complaint to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, U.S. Department of Transportation, C-70, W96-432, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590.

Florida mom finds unknown AirTag in her son's shoe: 'Every mother's worst nightmare'

Mom finds unknown airtag in son's sneaker.

A Brevard County mother was floored when she discovered an unknown AirTag hidden in her son's shoes. She soon figured out the mystery after reporting the incident to law enforcement.

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. - An AirTag causes cross-country chaos after a mom thought her son was being tracked by a stranger.

Jackie Giurleo didn’t own any air tags but found one hidden in her 7-year-old son’s shoe. She immediately got the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office involved, but what could have been a crime turned into an innocent coincidence.

The ordeal started months ago at a Christmas parade on Jackson Avenue in Satellite Beach. After attending the event, Jackie started getting alerts about an AirTag nearby, which started the months-long investigation to figure out why and how her son was being followed.

"I go a lot of places," said 7-year-old Aidan Giurleo who had the AirTag in his shoes and never felt it.

His mom ended up seeing all the places her son had been after the parade because a map of his location popped up on her phone as an undetected AirTag alert. The big issue with that - his mom didn't own anything that was supposed to be tracking her son!

"It was every mother’s worst nightmare," said Jackie.

She needed to figure out why someone was seeing her son's location in real time and where was the AirTag fast. Jackie searched all of her son's clothes, toys, everything trying to find where the tracker was.

"When we found it, my heart just dropped. Honestly, my knees gave out because it was inside my son’s shoe," said the mom.

Hidden in the sole was a quarter-sized hole holding the mystery AirTag that had been tracking her son for nearly a month.

Jackie panicked and went right to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office to file a report.

Deputies went to work, and a detailed report shows the sheriff's office subpoenaed Apple to get the address of who owned the AirTag.

"Luckily, it just turned into a happy coincidence of a tale of two moms," said Jackie.

A case of two moms and two sons who swapped shoes. The kids' shoes ended up on the wrong feet after jumping around a bounce house at the Christmas parade.

"I can remember that I saw one of the kids had the same shoes as me, and I think we put them in the same places, and then we just swapped," added Aidan.

Here’s exactly what happened: Aidan accidentally put on another kid’s shoes after getting out of the bounce house! That other kid was here on vacation but actually lives in Oklahoma.

His family owns the AirTags inside the shoes, and they were meant to track their own kid. It turns out they were the ones "tracking" Aidan but had no clue why or how.

Aiden’s mom was floored and even learned something new about the power of AirTags.

"We have never had AirTags," she said. "I knew about them with luggage and keys and things like that. I never thought about them when it came to tracking your kids.

All this mom feels now is a relief, knowing her son is safe, and the AirTag mystery wasn’t a crime -- just two boys who accidentally put on the wrong shoes.

"I took his, and he took mine," said Aidan.

"We were really lucky that we had a happy ending," concluded Jackie.

After all this, Jackie thinks AirTags could be a genius investment for theme parks or other activities because the tags will always be right on them, and her son didn’t even know it was there. All in all, she says she learned more than she lost during this crazy ordeal.

It’s My Work-Diapers Backpack-Tote

Portrait of Liza Corsillo

Most diaper bags are just tote bags or backpacks made of waterproof materials, with extra pockets to hold bottles, pacifiers, and baby snacks. (Some of the more elaborate ones have insulated storage and removable changing pads.) They are often bulky, and, in my experience, life as a parent is easier without one. I prefer a more streamlined multipurpose bag that I can use for work or travel or just everyday errand-running, in addition to baby outings. And the best one I’ve found so far is the surprisingly spacious and nice-looking LeSportsac Double Trouble backpack.

LeSportSac Double Trouble Backpack

My ideal diaper bag is lightweight and easy to carry, wipes clean and doesn’t show stains, looks good with everything I might wear, and is just as handy for carrying a laptop, water bottle , or wallet as it is for carrying baby stuff. The Double Trouble checks all of these boxes — plus, it can be used as a backpack or a tote. It has two tall pockets on the sides that work just as well for an adult water bottle as they do for a baby bottle. Inside, there are four elastic-trimmed mesh pockets that I use for everything from a computer charger to extra tampons and infant Motrin. There’s also a sneaky outer zipper pocket on the back and two smaller pockets (one zip, one not) on the front.

tag for trip

Despite its French-sounding name, LeSportsac is an American company that was founded in 1974, was taken over (and given new life) by the son of the original founders in the early 1990s, and is now in the middle of another revival along with other popular brands of the ’90s and 2000s. This resurgence and the backpack’s trapezoidal shape make it feel subtly trendy — even Prada -adjacent — especially in the all-black nylon that I have (though it also comes in an ever-changing array of bright colors and playful prints). It has a ’90s mini-backpack vibe without being actually mini or overtly vintage-looking. I first became familiar with the brand in college when I worked part-time in a kids’-clothing store that carried some of the Hello Kitty and Tokidoki collaboration bags . Then, last year, LeSportsac sent me a few items to try in celebration of its upcoming 50th anniversary, and the Double Trouble was the sleeper hit.

Before the Double Trouble became my “diaper bag” of choice, I tried three other contenders: a leopard-print Colugo diaper tote , an all-black Caraa baby bag , and a Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole backpack , also in all black. All three are well-designed bags with practical details like removable looped straps for hanging on a stroller and insulated pockets for snacks or milk, and all three had great potential. But, ultimately, none of them fit my criteria for everyday (or even occasional) non-baby-related use and ended up in the back of my closet.

I put the Patagonia backpack — which is also popular among artists and art handlers — on my baby registry , thinking it would work well style-wise for both me and my husband. It’s lightweight and packable and can be hosed off in the event of a spill. But since it lacks structure, the lightness of the backpack and the depth of the main compartment are more frustrating than they are practical. No matter how thoughtfully I packed it, everything would disappear as if into a … black hole. I always had to use two hands and a hard surface to find anything — not great if you’re also holding a wriggly or fussy baby with a dirty diaper.

tag for trip

The Caraa baby bag is the opposite, designed so you can find exactly what you need quickly. It’s all black on the outside, but the lining is cream-colored, so all your stuff is easy to see. It has three insulated outer pockets, two non-insulated magnetic sleeve pockets, a back zipper pocket that can fit a tablet or an iPad but not my MacBook Air, and a hidden zipper pocket for tucking away the optional shoulder straps. Inside, there are also four clear plastic slots and one elastic rimmed divider for organizing diapers . But the bag is bulky in a way that outs it as a diaper bag, and it can’t really double as a work bag since it can just barely hold my 13-inch laptop in the main compartment (and even then, the computer fits only without a protective sleeve ). The wealth of pockets, while useful, annoyingly causes me to carry more than I need.

The Colugo diaper tote is roomy and very attractive, with a handful of useful inner pockets and two small zipper pockets on the outside. It also has a removable cross-body shoulder strap. But I’ve found I like it better as a weekend bag, because it’s too big and heavy to use on a daily basis in New York City.

Where the Double Trouble beats them all is in its simple and ergonomic design. It’s comfortable to wear as a backpack despite a lack of extra padding or tactical-looking straps — the wide, woven nylon straps hug my shoulders gently as they evenly distribute the weight of whatever I am carrying. I can even wear it comfortably while carrying my son in a baby carrier , and the placement of the outer pockets makes it easy to reach around and grab my phone or a straw cup one-handed. When the subway car is crowded, it’s easy to switch to carrying it by the top handles as a tote. It fits in the storage bin of my compact Yoyo Stroller or in the basket of a Citibike. Best of all, it always makes my outfits look more sleek and put together, so much so that I chose to bring it with me instead of a purse on a recent trip to Japan and even got compliments on it from the salesperson at the Beams store in Kanazawa. It’s more than just a work bag, or a diaper bag, or an alternative to a purse for sightseeing, and I plan on carrying it long after my son is out of diapers and carrying his own backpack .
