Premier of tasmania, 14 july 2023 jeremy rockliff, premier, support package for west coast.

A targeted travel voucher program will be launched to encourage visitation to the West Coast as part of a $1 million support package being offered by the Rockliff Liberal Government.  The support package has been developed to support operators in the region who are impacted by the temporary shutdown of the West Coast Wilderness Railway while it undergoes major upgrades. The package is designed to drive visitation to the West Coast during the shutdown and ensure that local operators can continue to invest in their businesses during the winter period.  Premier and Minister for Tourism, Jeremy Rockliff, said the travel voucher program was just one part of a broader package being provided by the Tasmanian Liberal Government. “The West Coast Wilderness Railway is one of the region’s major drawcards, and we recognise that the temporary shutdown of the Railway is having an impact on our tourism operators and the region,” the Premier said. “That’s why we have developed a $1 million support package to encourage Tasmanians to visit the West and enjoy everything it has to offer. “As part of this package, we are launching a $300,000 targeted travel voucher program to stimulate activity for operators. “We have seen huge success in past travel voucher programs, and I have no doubt that this incentive program will deliver significant benefits to the region.”  Following feedback from the industry, the program will be business-led and delivered as a rebate scheme to ensure maximum benefit to the region and efficient facilitation through the Department of State Growth.  From midday, Monday 17 July, eligible businesses can register to offer incentives (discounts/vouchers) to their customers for the months of August, September and October.  Once approved, eligible businesses will be able to offer their incentives to customers directly with between 50 per cent (minimum) and 80 per cent (maximum) off, and seek rebates from the Department of State Growth. The specific percentage is also at the discretion of businesses. The West Coast Support Package has been developed by the Tasmanian Liberal Government in consultation with Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT), West by North West (WxNW) and the West Coast Council.  More details on the Scheme are available:  https://www.business.tas.gov.au/travelvouchers

Tasmanian travel vouchers scheme on again, as tourist operators eye COVID future

View into accommodation unit from deck.

Erica Bowd hasn't had to change a thing to attract visitors to her high-end accommodation on the shores of the Bruny Island in Tasmania's south.

Key points:

  • A third round of travel vouchers have been released to help stimulate the Tasmanian tourism economy
  • Some tourism businesses are thriving despite the border closures, others less so
  • Despite concerns for businesses reliant on the international market, the outlook for the Christmas season is positive

Despite the on-again-off-again border closures and recent COVID-19 lockdowns grappling Australia's three most populous states, her "boutique environmental accommodation" is not only running at capacity — it has a waitlist.

"To be completely honest, we've been fully booked the whole time," said Ms Bowd, who owns the property.

"For us, we've been running at a 100 per cent with a waitlist."

Exterior of boutique accommodation.

She said people do cancel when lockdowns prevent them from making the trip, but the vacancies are then snapped up "literally overnight".

"With Queensland lockdown just recently, we get an influx of cancellations, naturally. Followed — probably the following day — by an influx of replacement bookings by other states that are available," she said.

"We do a lot more work in that we're handling cancellations and rebooking. We had one vacancy this year. That's how busy we are."

Ms Bowd thinks she could be one of the fortunate ones.

Bruny Island is a small but densely visited place, advertised as "Tasmania's premiere island destination".

"Maybe we are just benefiting from a little microcosm. And we do provide a unique style of accommodation," she said.

Third round of travel vouchers available

Others have been on the roller-coaster of high tourist activity, followed by a dry spell.

Maylands Lodge in Hobart — another high-end accommodation venue — lost about 50 per cent of its bookings for the month, when New South Wales announced a lockdown.

Those places still haven't been filled.

"When there's a sudden lockdown, it's impossible," manager Jessica Johnson said.

"It's really difficult to fill last-minute bookings.

"The biggest thing is, even when the borders do open people are so hesitant to want to leave.

"It's been over a year now and unfortunately the novelty for Tasmanians has worn off in terms of wanting to travel around their own state."

But the Tasmanian Government is confident is has a remedy.

Today, it will release $7.5 million worth of tourism vouchers designed to entice Tasmanians to "holiday at home" .

"The vouchers, I think, give people the little nudge or remind them that they can support local businesses," Ms Johnson said.

Interior of historic house accommodation.

Those wanting to secure a voucher have to enter a ballot set to ensure vouchers are "fairly allocated".

The ballot closes on August 9 and successful recipients will be notified on August 11.

It is the third time the government has released vouchers since the pandemic began. Except this time around, they can be used seven days a week — until September 24.

Each voucher is worth $300, of which $200 is allocated for an accommodation of choice and $100 for a tourism experience, which also constitutes a rental car hire.

"What we know from the last voucher scheme is that there was just under $30 million worth of additional spending in our economy as a result," Premier Peter Gutwein said.

"We expect that this voucher scheme will be just as successful.

"Obviously those [businesses] relying on people coming from NSW have been significantly impacted. What we want to see is those beds filled by Tasmanians."

Exterior of accommodation units at night.

Future forecast 'very strong'

Destination Southern Tasmania chief executive Alex Heroys said tourism operators had had a mixed experience during the pandemic, but overall, the sector had fared "better than expected".

"There were certainly some businesses that have had visitation higher than pre-COVID levels. But there are also sectors of industry that are struggling really hard," he said.

"Our forecasting at the beginning of the pandemic was that there was a visitation level of 40 to 50 per cent of what we had pre-2019.

"Prior to the current border closures, the access into the state was up at about 85 per cent of 2019 levels, which is a lot higher than we had forecast.

"What has played out is that Tasmania is a very attractive destination for the domestic market."

He said despite concerns for businesses reliant on the international market, the overall prediction for the Christmas season looked positive.

"The future forecast is very strong," he said.

Vouchers to bring tourists to tasmania.

  • Joint media release with:
  • Senator the Hon Jonno Duniam,Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Assistant Minister for Industry Development Senator for Tasmania

The Morrison Government is supporting Tasmanian tourism with a $3 million holiday voucher scheme to attract thousands of visitors in the lead-up to Christmas.

The scheme will provide vouchers worth $300 ($200 for accommodation and $100 for attractions or tours) for up to 10,000 residents of South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland who book their holiday in Tasmania for November and December.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said the initiative was a timely boost for the state's vital tourism sector.

“A recent Tourism Australia Travel Sentiment Tracker found 59 per cent of Australians want to take a holiday in the next six months,” Mr Tehan said.

“Pent-up demand combined with this innovative voucher program represents a fantastic opportunity for Tasmanian tourism to welcome back visitors and give local businesses and the economy a much-needed boost.

“Australians want to travel again so they can visit family and friends and take a holiday, in places like Tasmania. All Australians can help to make that a reality by getting vaccinated so we can reach our 80 per cent vaccination targets to trigger the resumption of travel.”

The voucher scheme is being funded through the Morrison Government's $50 million Recovery for Regional Tourism (RRT) program, which is part of the $1 billion COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund to support regions, communities and industry sectors disproportionately affected by the economic impacts of COVID-19.

Senator for Tasmania Jonno Duniam said Tasmania had been a significant beneficiary of the Recovery for Regional Tourism program, with $13.5 million allocated to projects to support the state's tourism sector.

“I welcome this great initiative from Tourism Tasmania to give visitors yet another reason to visit Tasmania in the lead-up to the traditional summer holiday period,” Senator Duniam said.

“Australians are keen to get travelling again and Tasmania is open for business.

“There has never been a better time to come down to Tassie, visit some of our incredible natural wonders and taste some of our fabulous food, wine and whisky.”

Tourism Tasmania CEO John Fitzgerald said the COVID-19 outbreaks in Victoria and NSW had significantly impacted Tasmanian tourism businesses.

“These markets provide around 70 per cent of all visitors to the state,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“This program will provide much-needed support for the Tasmanian industry in a crucial period.”

Could East Coast benefit from a tourism voucher program in 2023?

A tough winter season for East Coast tourism operators has raised the question of whether more needs to be done to support the industry.

In July, the Tasmanian government announced a targeted $300,000 voucher program for businesses on the west coast to apply for throughout August, September and October.

East Coast tourism operators have been hit with winter blues with a decline in visitor numbers. Picture by Craig George

Following the most recent occupancy report for July release on September 4, Tasmanian Hospitality Association chief executive Steve Old said the initiative had been "pleasing to see" to encourage visitation to our regional areas.

"And having recently spent time with some East Coast operators who have done it tough this winter, they expressed a need for a similar program or focus on their region in the future," Mr Old said.

He said it was vital to find solutions to keep attracting visitors in the cooler months.

Director of hotel operations for NRMA resorts Mark Whitnell said the was no reason why a similar voucher program wouldn't work on the East Coast.

"I suspect the whole of Tasmania would put their hand out to stake a claim for a voucher system," Mr Whitnell said.

"It's marginally worked on the west coast, but it's still a mile off the money.

"On the west coast it's not unusual to have such seasonality, where as the East Coast has always held up pretty well."

NRMA resorts has acquired Freycinet Lodge, and also owns Strahan Village, Cradle Mountain Hotel and Pumphouse Point.

Meanwhile, East Coast Tourism chief executive Grace Keath said the voucher program might not be the best fit for the region, but support ought to be considered.

"We know this year was exceptionally difficult because of the pent up demand for travel overseas, as well as interest rates and the cost of living rising," Ms Keath said.

"The voucher program is something to consider to try to raise demand in regional areas."

She also suggested spreading big events held in Launceston and Hobart over winter to the regions, such as Dark MOFO and the AFL, or making them longer than a single weekend to encourage greater statewide travel.

Ms Keath said mid-to-lower range tourism operators had been hit the hardest over winter.

"Some operators are saying the winter season is more reflective of 2015," she said.

For now, Mr Whitnell said October and November bookings were looking promising before the season peaks from Boxing Day, despite a "soft" looking September.

Statewide, the THA Hotel Occupancy Report for July showed statewide 62 per cent of available rooms were filled, with the North sitting below the mark at 60.31 per cent.

2023 Southern Tasmania Tourism Showcase

2024 Sponsorship opportunities are now open.

Partnership invitation.

We invite your organisation to partner with the Tasmanian tourism industry at the 2024 Tasmanian Tourism Showcase to be held in nipaluna/Hobart on 2nd and 3rd August 2024 at Princes Wharf 1 (PW1).

This event will allow you to enhance your visibility as a supporter and important partner of the Tasmanian tourism industry.

Your support will help ensure the sustainability of this premier event and build important cohesion between industry operators and stakeholders.

About the Tasmanian Tourism Showcase

Tasmania is home to some of Australia’s great tourism icons and many other hidden treasures and bespoke experiences that encourage visitors to recharge, reconnect and ‘come down for air’.

The Tasmanian brand remains strong. Our quality tourism operators and the experiences they offer continue to drive record growth in visitor expenditure; with visitors staying longer and spending more.

In 2023, Tasmania’s visitor economy generated $3.85 billion in visitor spend; the highest ever.

In its second year, the Tasmanian Tourism Showcase returns bigger and better in 2024! The inaugural one-day event brought together 70 Southern Tasmania operators exhibiting to more than 300 attendees; including key tourism industry stakeholders and students pursuing careers in tourism and hospitality.

This year’s event will expand to a state-wide focus and include a consumer-focussed day, bringing together Tasmanian tourism operators and the community to showcase the variety of products and the regions in which they operate.

2023 Southern Tasmania Tourism Showcase

Key Event Details:

Princes Wharf 1, nipaluna/Hobart

The aim of the Tasmanian Tourism Showcase is to create an accessible and inclusive event that strives to build industry capacity through awareness and forming new connections. As a state-wide celebration of Tasmania’s tourism industry, success would be 70 to 100 operators from across 4 regions; South, East, North, West/North West.

The Tasmanian tourism industry acknowledges the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita /Tasmania.

We honour 40,000 years of uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement.

As a tourism industry that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully.

We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands.

We respectfully ask that tourism be a part of that future.
