14 days in Portugal and Spain

We just returned from 14 days in Portugal and Spain. Overall the trip was enjoyable and the guide was superb. Though on that subject, after spending $15K for the trip, we were told we still needed to tip the guide and driver an additional $500 because they depend on tips for the “majority” of their salary. This is ridiculous; Tauck should pay them what they’re worth and not ding the clients extra, unless each person wants to give extra. HOWEVER, I’d say Tauck is for people who really don’t care what they see as long as they stay in 5-star hotels, don’t have to handle their luggage, and have plenty of time to shop. I sent a letter to Tauck outlining 10 major deficiencies in our trip, including a flight that we were supposed to take from Lisbon to Seville that was canceled—we took our bus for 9 hours—no refund; we were downgraded from a hotel in Seville we were supposed to stay in— no refund. There were numerous “must see” sites that were not included that we had to seek out on our own and pay extra for (e.g. Granada Cathedral, Royal palace in Madrid, the Queluz Palace in Lisbon). Poor scheduling had us in the Prado Museum during peak time—after the impossibly crowded tour, the guide told us when to come later when practically no one was there; we did and enjoyed it. Tauck doesn’t provide any meals on some days, and way too much food on other days—they should balance this. There were just too many cites missing, when it would have been so easy to include them (even if optional for those who didn’t want to go shopping). We were there to see the important cites. One whole day was wasted in Marbella doing nothing—and that’s at a cost of $1000. At least there should have been a guided option to go somewhere interesting—even a walking tour of the old town—but there was nothing except a mediocre beach. Then there were three times we were taken to uninteresting Jewish Quarters in bland areas. Why? We feel we did not get sufficient value from the experience considering the price of the trip. We had very high expectations that Tauck did not meet. We will not travel with Tauck again. We learned our lesson.

If Tauck cancels they will keep much of your money

Tauck cancelled the Christmas Markets trip to Germany and Austria, leaving Dec 6, for my daughter and me. I did not cancel.  Tauck is keeping $1,398 of my money. Again, they cancelled, not me. I spoke to Courtney their guest relations rep. She was curt and refused us a refund. She said we were "nobody special." My daughter and I waited a lifetime to go. And while I understand Covid is not Tauck's fault, my many reassurances from the company as late as 3 weeks ago that the trip was proceeding has caused me to lose a considerable amount of money on train tickets and other aspects of this trip. Lufthansa is refusing to reimburse our airfare and, of course, Tauck will do nothing to help. I am disappointed and shocked that Tauck would attempt to keep almost $1,400 when we have hung in there with them for 2 years; it was cancelled in 2020. We attempted to book the SAME cruise for next year 2022, but ALL THOSE CHRISTMAS MARKET TOURS ARE BOOKED. They want us on a different tour on different dates. Doesn't work for us. Does Tauck care? Not one bit. Their motto is that they keep the porch light on. Buyer beware. They will leave you in the dark and pick your pockets. Tauck is an example of a travel company acting very, very badly during Covid.

Outstanding service, and friendly representatives

We have taken two tours with Tauck, one to California and one to Italy, both in 2022. We have two tours scheduled this summer. We originally scheduled our tour to Italy in 2020. When everything shut down, we received a credit for a future tour, that included the price of the insurance. If you book another tour, and cancel THE DAY BEFORE the tour you are signed up for, you get 100% of the money applied to the new tour. You pay for insurance, so that you get your tour price and flights refunded. Not everything goes perfectly. This grousing and complaining on this site is shocking. If you buy the insurance, and don't take the trip, without booking another tour, you don't get the cost of the insurance back. That is clearly spelled out in the travel documents. If you don't want to pay for travel insurance, then don't pay for travel insurance. But, to say you canceled, and to complain that you didn't get your premium back, is just ridiculous. I have traveled with the constant complainers, and those who have something negative to say at every stop. Most people are wonderful, and thrilled to be on their journey. However, you will never satisfy everyone. Go with Tauck, if you want a top of the line experience. Top hotels, access, skip the line access, etc. Great local guides. Private after-hours tour of the Uffizi gallery was fabulous in Italy. We have had a bad meal here or there with Tauck. Did it wreck the trip? No. Where there some things I would have changed a bit? Yes. Did it wreck the trip? No. I would think that those able to afford a Tauck trip would realize how blessed they are. Stop complaining and realize that you will never get a perfect trip. I will continue to travel with this company and I will tell you why. We were supposed to leave for a trip on Tuesday, May 16th. On May 15th, my son was hospitalized. The rep took care of me, and guess what? I already have a full refund, less the cost of the insurance. Today is May 18th, and I already have my money back. This is a good company that cares about its guests, so I recommend them. I have made some unbelievable memories with my family. I have been lucky to be able to go to places I have only read about. An occasional so-so meal or an imperfect itinerary cannot lessen the impact of the travel unless you allow it to do so.

REDICULOUS PHONE STSYEM

Cannot get through to TAUCK without a 2-3 hour wait on the phone and if I leave my phone number I never get a call back- It is sickening- I have a large family traveling and it is awful- like I have nothing else to do but hang on a phone waiting for someone to answer!

Hi- We are considering a 14 days Tauck Tour of Scotland and England. I reviewed their brochure and noticed that the hotels all seem really upscale compared to Insight vacations. (Looked into that one, also.) Also, it seems to be a slower pace where there are half days of sight-seeing and time off for yourself. Can anyone out there comment on Tauck Tours and the quality for the money? Taking my 91 year old Dad and want this to be really nice. Probably, won't be doing it ever again. Thank you.

The hotels at Tauck are excellent ,- and the location is almost alway near to local popular attractions, making it easy for me to visit local famous places in free time. I have found that the value for the money - when I had my travel agent break out the actual costs included in Tauck vs other companies - the cost was really the same - in other words, what is included in Tauck is usually an additonal cost with others - I went to Africa and the hot air baloon ride was included with Tauck - with the others the additional cost for the same hot air ballon ride was betweeen 470 - to 600. On the Tauck trips I have taken, there is always someone on thier 12th - to 20th trip - which I think speaks for the quality of the company. There is a Facebook Page for Tauck - you can see what other travelers write about the company. What ever you decide, I hope you have an amazing time with your Father - what a great memory you are about to create!

Thank you so much for the information!!! I thought as much in regards to the cost of extras adding onto the base price. I noticed that TAUCK also offered more meals. I loved the hotels they picked, knowing that part of the fantasy of travel is the lodging. Bad room, bad experience. I think your comments have sealed the deal for me. I know we will not be disappointed. Thank you for the tip on the Face-book page! Again, thanks for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate input from my Trip-advisor friends.

Linda Tauck is perfect for your Dad. You see they cater to an older crowd. Some of the other operators, like Insight, cater to a younger crowd who wants free time to experience things on their own, who want the freedom to try restaurants (with recommendations from their guides perhaps) on their own or simply to have the option to grab a bite and eat on the run and not sit down for two hours at every meal. Those tours are catering to the folks who are not even sure that they want to be on an organized tour so they do their best to provide the 'must sees' and outline additional special interest options. Not everyone would be comfortable flying in a hot air balloon I suppose. But for your Dad I think you've made a good choice. Enjoy yourselves.

Thank you one and all for your comments on Tauck Tours. Based on the "rave" reviews, I am booking the 14 day England/Scotland/Wales tour. Even my AAA advisor said that she has only had good comments. Add my Trip-advisor friends into the mix and I am totally sold on the idea. Think my Dad will love it, with no complaints. The tour age bracket sounds perfect. 91 years old and he still eager to go! This should be FUN

Although our tour was to Italy and not Scotland, it sounds like you still might find the write-up of our experience helpful.

We posted our "review" of our Tauck vacation on this page:

We have traveled with a number of different tour companies, and Tauck has been our favorite!

Hello Peregrinater- Thank you so much for sending me your Review of Classic Italy, Tauck Tours. Most thorough! Not a question unanswered! After reading your write-up, I am almost ready to switch my tour. Almost, but not quite! I am thinking of making a 5 year plan (with Tauck). They have so many wonderful destinations and tours and so much positive feed-back! Again, thank you for taking the time to email me. I really appreciate and value my Tripadvisor friends and their comments.

My wife and I, both Seniors, have been on seven Tauck Tours -- USA, Canada, and most recently, Ireland.

We looked into Insight, Globus, and several other Tour Companies, but always stayed with Tauck. We were NEVER disappointed. The very best hotels , restaurants and sightseeing. There were always many (mostly?) seniors on the tours, and the Tour Directors were always outstanding. A bit more expensive, but IMO, worth it.

PS On a Tauck Tour to Nova Sctia a few years ago the was a delightful gentleman who was 93 years old with the group. He was there with his girlfriend!

Part II of Terrible Travel Company Tauck

Tauck — a travel company acting badly, part ii.

tauck travel insurance reviews

This is a follow-up to an earlier blog about travel company Tauck . You may want to read it first, so you know what’s going on: read Part I .

I have filed several complaints about Tauck. The BBB is not useful as they just bounce letters back and forth between the two parties involved in the dispute. It may take a bit of time for my complaint to be posted, but meanwhile you can read what others have said . Unfortunately, the BBB rating is not useful at all. Years ago, I was involved in an incident with a plumbing company who attempted to charge me almost $10,000 to find a leak. Yes, $10,000. Not to repair, just to find it. I eventually got an attorney and prevailed, but despite my filings with the BBB, they refused to knock down the companies rating from an A+. BBB ratings, in my opinion, are meaningless. Read the complaints if you want information.

I also filed a complaint with the Attorney General of Connecticut where Tauck is based. They did the same thing as the BBB and just bounced the letters back and forth between us, before giving up.

I filed with the Attorney General of the state where I reside and that is ongoing.

The Consumer Protection Commission filing is also ongoing as of this writing.

Tauck’s response to everyone is that they have “successfully litigated this refund issue.” So basically, they have high-powered attorneys that are not going to give you your money back.

Recently, in response to a negative post by me on Tauck’s Facebook page, a couple women remarked that they had had good experiences with Tauck. I do not doubt this. However, if Tauck cancels your trip–as they did with mine–they will keep a sizeable portion of your money. Then, they made a big show of rolling it to another trip within the calendar year. Problem is, all spots on the trip I wanted had already been sold out as of the time of their cancellation. Tauck claims that 10% of the amount of money I paid was for their insurance, but THEY were the ones who cancelled! However, if this was travel insurance, then why did I lose thousands on non-refundable train and airline tickets? Because it is just a way to keep money from guests. I NEVER received a single cent of all this lost money. That is not how travel insurance works.

My late husband used to say that character is revealed in times of adversity. I believe a company’s true character is revealed when things go sideways. Here is what did NOT happen, but it is what SHOULD have happened . . .

A Pretend Scenario in Which Tauck Steps Up

Tauck: We are so sorry, but your trip has been cancelled by us and will not run.

Me: Oh no!! I am all packed and we are supposed to leave in a few days.

Tauck: We are so sorry and understand this is difficult.

Me: I have non-refundable airline tickets!

Tauck: As promised, we will help you with that.

Me: OK, thanks. What about the Christmas Market Cruise? Can we roll the money over to next year?

Tauck: We are so sorry but every spot has been sold out. Would you like to take a different trip?

Me: No. I told my daughter I can only take time in early December for this Christmas cruise.

Tauck: We understand. You wanted only to go on this particular trip.

Tauck: In that case, since there are no spots left and you have been with us for two years now–since your trip was also cancelled last year– we will fully refund your money.

Me: Thank you. It is a lot of money and you have had it for about two years now.

Tauck: We care about customer service, and we hope you will consider traveling with us in the future.

Me: I absolutely will. I look forward to writing a good review about how your company stepped up during the pandemic.

Tauck: Thanks for that.

What Really Happened?

Tauck kept my money and made it clear that they had “successfully litigated” this before. What did I do? I filed lots of complaints and will continue posting on social media to warn others about their business practices. How long will I do this? Forever. Really– forever .

Check out the forum about Tauck on Trip Advisor. I am not the only one with a bad experience.

Don’t travel with Tauck. Especially now.

My Recommendations for Great Travel Companies I Have Actually Used

Read my reviews on TripAdvisor, Yelp, and other sites about travel companies. Two I highly recommend are Africa Dream Safaris (incredible company) and MIR (I’ve taken 3 amazing trips with them).

2 thoughts on “Part II of Terrible Travel Company Tauck”

Have you tried filing a complaint with Elliott Advocacy? https://www.elliott.org/ I will be canceling a trip with Tauck as they are requiring vaccination for all their trips. They have no right to require us to go through any medical procedure. Since our trip is near the end of the year we should get our deposit back. However, the insurance cost is another matter. Since they changed the terms for travel midstream, we feel they should also refund the cost for insurance. We’ll see!

Yes. I tried but they were not interested in pursuing this.

Not only will Tauck NOT refund what they call the “insurance,” but it turned out to be useless because I lost thousands on airfare and train tickets for which Tauck never gave me a single cent. Tauck claims that was not covered under this supposed $699 per person “insurance” policy. It was misleading from the start.

I am vaccinated and boostered, but of course it is your choice whether to do it. COVID is quite serious though.

All the best to you!

Our Cruise – Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island

Our sample couple, ages 55 and 60, selected an 8-day trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for $3,740 per person for a total of $7,580. The trip leaves September 1,2022 and returns September 8,2022.

map

Unfortunately, you cannot purchase a Tauck’s cruise online, you must speak to one of their travel insurance agents. During the call you will be presented with the option to purchase their ‘Guest Protection Plan’. Of course, you are under no obligation to buy Tauck’s travel insurance, regardless of how much pressure the sales agent puts on you. Although Tauck offers travel insurance over the phone when you make a deposit or initial payment, it is the only time they permit enrollment in their insurance program.

Tauck’s travel insurance program is called Cruise & Event Protection (the ‘Tauck Protection Plan’) and underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, a strong insurance partner. Aon Affinity administers the plan and processes claims.

Their Protection Plan pairs a barebones travel insurance plan with Tauck’s “Cancellation Waiver.” The Cancellation Waiver is not an insurance feature; it’s administered by Tauck and is simply a reduced cancellation fee. It does allow you to cancel at any time, but you will pay an increasing penalty amount as the departure date draws closer.

Cancellation Penalties

You must purchase their trip insurance to be eligible for these reduced cancellation fees. While some cruise lines set insurance rates on a percentage of the total trip cost, Tauck charges a flat $349 per person fee regardless of trip cost. Also, Tauck’s insurance only covers travel arrangements made through them. If you buy airfare or pre/post-cruise hotels and tours on your own, it won’t be covered under their policy, so you’d have to buy separate travel insurance for that.

For our two travelers, Tauck’s insurance plan would cost an additional $698. The insurance itself is minimal: $10,000 of medical coverage and $50,000 of medical evacuation coverage. Trip cost without their insurance is limited to the airline ticket cost and trip interruption only pays out a maximum of $5,000. Let’s see if we can find a more robust policy in the open marketplace.

Comparison Quotes

We used our trip details and cost to receive comparison quotes from Cruise Insurance 101 and were presented with 25 options to choose from. When traveling outside US borders, Cruise Insurance 101 recommends having $100,000 of medical coverage and $250,000 of medical evacuation coverage. We used these limits to choose several policies to compare with the Tauck Cruise & Event Protection plan

The least expensive plan with our recommended coverage is the AIG Travel Guard Plus for $340.98.

AIG TG Plus

This policy provides $100,000 of medical coverage and $1 million of medical evacuation coverage. In addition, it covers Pre-existing Medical Conditions if purchased within 21 days of your Initial Trip Deposit or Payment.

If we want a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy, we’ve chosen two options for our review: The AIG Travel Guard Plus (CFAR 50%) and the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%). The AIG policy has the same coverage as the standard AIG Travel Guard policy but adds the CFAR option which will refund 50% of our trip cost if we cancel for a reason not listed in the policy. Total cost for both travelers is $426.27

AIG TG Plus (CFAR 50-)

If we prefer a higher refund, we’ve chosen the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%). This policy will refund 75% of our trip costs if we cancel for a reason not listed in the policy.

JH Silver (CFAR 75-)

Next we’ll compare the Tauck Protection Plan to our Cruise Insurance 101 policies side-by-side:

Cost Comparison

Overall, the Tauck Protection Plan has minimal coverage compared to the other plans. Their cancellation benefit has steep penalties and is only available if you have purchased their travel insurance as well.

The AIG Travel Guard Plus plan is over $358 LESS than the Tauck Protection plan while the AIG Travel Guard Plus (CFAR 50%) is $272 LESS than Tauck. Our most expensive option of the three policies chosen, the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) is still $77 LESS than the Tauck policy. All three Cruise Insurance 101 policies have $100,000 the medical coverage instead of the low $10,000 offered by Tauck. Medical evacuation coverage is more robust with the Cruise Insurance 101 policies as well at $500k - $1million versus the low $50,000 for Tauck. Best of all, the Cruise Insurance 101 policies cost less for significantly higher coverage than the Tauck policy!

In the following sections, we discuss know what to look for when shopping for travel insurance for your Tauck cruise.

Trip Cancellation

A significant concern for travelers is  Trip Cancellation . If you became ill or had an accidental injury prior to your departure date, you may have to cancel your travel arrangements, resulting in financial losses. While disappointing, Trip Cancellation is doubly painful without cancellation insurance.

Tauck’s Protection Plan permits cancellation for the following reasons:

  • Unexpected injury, illness, or death of traveler or non-traveling family member.
  • Involvement of a traffic accident that causes you to miss your cruise
  • Residence uninhabitable by natural disaster, fire, flood, burglary
  • Revocation of military leave
  • Mechanical breakdown of a common carrier
  • Inclement weather
  • Hijacked or quarantined
  • Subpoena or being called to serve jury duty
  • Pregnancy or childbirth
  • Hospitalization due to mental, nervous or psychological condition

Unfortunately, Tauck’s list of cancellation reasons lacks some important coverages.

We recommend policies that also include:

  • Default or bankruptcy of the common carrier or travel supplier
  • Cancel For Work Reason  (traveler required to work during the trip)
  • Employer-initiated transfer of 250 miles or more
  • Destination uninhabitable or unreachable by fire, flood, or natural disaster
  • Mandatory evacuation
  • Documented theft of passports or visas.

Also, Tauck’s Protection Plan does not cover any travel arrangements booked outside of Tauck.

The Cruise Insurance 101 policies can cover all travel arrangements, regardless of where you booked them. In addition, these plans offer a broad list of covered reasons, including cancelling due to contracting COVID.

Trip Interruption

A  Trip Interruption  is a situation during your trip that causes you to miss some or the rest of your vacation. It’s like Trip Cancellation but happens during your travels.

The most common trip interruption is the injury or illness of a traveler. If you had an injury or illness on your vacation but can continue traveling after treatment, trip interruption reimburses the unused portion of the trip, and the cost to rejoin the trip in progress.

Trip interruption also includes a family member who had a sudden grave illness or passed away. If your covered situation requires curtailing the trip and going home early, Trip Interruption also reimburses for the unused portion of the trip, plus the added cost of going home early.

In the Tauck Protection Plan, Trip Interruption benefits share the same list of covered reasons as Trip Cancellation.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason  cruise insurance provides the highest level of flexibility and reimbursement if you must cancel your trip for any reason not covered by the policy.

Tauck’s Protection Plan includes a Cancellation Waiver with “Cancel For Any Reason.” In the case that you cancel for a reason not covered by the policy, Tauck does not pay a 50% or 75% cash refund like a regular travel insurance policy. Instead, Tauck Cruise Protection merely reduces their standard cancellation fee.

Cancel 120 days or more before departure you receive 100% refund

119-60 days before departure you lose 25% of the cruise price

59-1 day before departure you lose 50% of the cruise price

Alternatively, travel insurance policies like AIG Travel Guard Plus (50%) or the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) will pay cash refund of all prepaid, non-refundable trip costs including arrangements made outside of Tauck. This could include flights, hotels, rental cars, excursions, and transfers.

Cancel For Any Reason policies have several stipulations:

  • Purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days (depending on policy), of your initial payment or deposit date and
  • Insure 100% of the prepaid trip costs subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions. For additional prepaid non-refundable payments made after the purchase of the policy, insure within 10-21 days (depending on policy), of each subsequent payment added to your trip, and
  • Cancel your trip 2 days or more before your scheduled departure date.

Medical Insurance for Emergency Treatment

One of the most important factors in selecting trip insurance is having adequate Medical Insurance  when you travel. Anything can happen, including accidental injuries or sudden illness.

If you have a medical emergency when traveling and don’t have proper medical insurance coverage while overseas, you could find yourself with huge, unexpected hospital bills. Many Americans mistakenly believe countries with universal health care will treat them for free. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Instead, Americans receive treatment at private hospitals, not public, and must pay like anyone else. Admission for inpatient care can cost $3,000-$4,000 per day, plus the cost of treatment, x-rays, surgeries, and specialists.

A common misconception is that Medicare will pay for hospitalization overseas.  Unfortunately, they won’t. Medicare does not pay providers outside the US. Some Medicare supplements do cover overseas, but have lifetime limits or reduced benefits, and pay for emergencies only. They can still require you to pay 20% of the costs. As a result, you could go on vacation and end up with medical bills in the thousands.

Cruise Insurance 101   urges overseas travelers to take travel medical insurance of at least $100,000 per person . In a medical emergency, $100,000 provides ample health care and helps protect your retirement savings from unexpected financial burdens.

Tauck only provides a $10,000 benefit for Medical Insurance. The AIG Travel Guard policies and John Hancock’s Silver (CFAR 75%) policy include $100,000 per person of Medical Insurance, so you can receive proper treatment without ending up in debt.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

Medical Insurance isn’t the only potentially expensive part of a trip.  Emergency Medical Evacuation  transports you from the place of injury or illness to the closest hospital. Once you’re stable enough for transport, Medical Evacuation brings you home via commercial flight or, if necessary, private medical jet.

Medical flights can cost up to $25,000 per hour and regular health insurance does not cover it. In addition, the US State Department does not offer any medical treatment or evacuation assistance for US citizens. Cruise Insurance 101 advises travelers to get at least $250,000 Medical Evacuation to assure there’s enough coverage to get them back home from almost anywhere if they experience a serious medical event.  However, if traveling to Asia or Africa or beyond, we recommend a minimum of $500,000 for Emergency Medical Evacuation due to the distance from the US.

The Tauck Protection Plan includes Medical Evacuation up to $50,000 per person. The John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) offers $500,000 per person for Medical Evacuation, and the AIG Travel Guard Plus policies provide $1 million for Medical Evacuation. With these policies you can feel secure knowing you have adequate coverage to transport you back home if needed.

prince-edward-island-g224bc8124 1920

Pre-existing Medical Conditions

A significant concern for senior travelers can be pre-existing medical conditions. A Pre-Existing Medical Condition is one in which you’ve received medical treatment, testing, medication changes, added new medications, or received a recommendation for a treatment or test that hasn’t happened yet. Most travel insurance policies exclude pre-existing conditions unless you purchase the policy within the required time period from your initial trip deposit date (called the Time Sensitive Period). Otherwise, the insurer will look backward 60, 90, or 180 days (depending on the policy) from the date you purchased the insurance to see if there are any pre-existing medical conditions they won’t cover. This is called the Look Back Period. Any medical conditions older than this Look Back Period, unchanged or stabilized with no medication dosage changes are covered, as are any new conditions that arise after you purchase the policy.

If you must cancel, interrupt, or seek medical treatment for a medical condition while traveling, travel insurance policies typically exclude claims related to Pre-existing Medical Conditions. However, if you purchase the policy within a few days of your Initial Trip Payment or Deposit date, many policies add a Waiver to the policy that covers Pre-existing Conditions. As a result, there is no Look Back Period and Pre-existing Conditions are covered.

The Tauck Protection Plan covers Pre-Existing Conditions if the policy is purchased within 10 days of the initial trip payment or deposit date.

The AIG Travel Guard Plus policies will cover Pre-existing Medical Conditions if you purchase within their 21-day Time Sensitive Period.

The John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) covers Pre-existing Medical Conditions if you purchase within the 14-day Time Sensitive Period.

Price and Value

The Tauck Protection Plan offers minimal coverage for a higher price than other available options. The medical insurance coverage is only $10,000, and only $50,000 for medical evacuation, which may not be adequate for a serious illness or injury. Cancellation reasons are missing some key reasons such as bankruptcy or insolvency of the travel supplier. Their Cancel For Any Reason option merely reduces their standard cancellation fee. Overall, the Tauck Protection Plan offers limited value for the price.

In contrast, by comparison shopping, we found the AIG Travel Guard Plus policy was $358 LESS than the Tauck Protection Plan while the AIG Travel Guard Plus (CFAR 50%) is $272 LESS than Tauck. Even the John Hancock Silver (CFAR 75%) is still $77 LESS than the Tauck policy. These savings could be used for shopping or additional excursions. All three AARDY policies have more robust medical coverage and medical evacuation coverage with longer Time Sensitive Periods to purchase the policy to get a waiver to cover pre-existing medical conditions.

The Tauck Protection Plan cruise insurance provides travelers with a minimal insurance policy and could leave travelers unpleasantly surprised during an emergency. Medical coverage and medical evacuation limits are low, and their Cancel For Any Reason is really just a reduced cancellation fee. Overall, we rate it a 6 out of 10.

Travelers planning a Tauck cruise vacation will find the best value for their money and peace of mind when they shop for travel insurance at Cruise Insurance 101 Travel Insurance Marketplace. There, you can review dozens of options and select the best policy to fit your needs.

To help you find the best policy, Cruise Insurance 101 recommends having at least $100,000 in travel medical coverage and $250,000 emergency medical evacuation when traveling outside the US. And, if you purchase the policy within the 14-21 days of initial trip payment, please consider a travel insurance policy with the pre-existing condition waiver included to ensure the most coverage for your money.

If you are planning a Tauck cruise in 2022, be sure to pack insurance before you travel. You never know when you may need it.

Road to The Nile at Christmas Holidays

Road to The Nile at Christmas Holidays

Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

AIG Travel Guard insurance review: What you need to know

Whether you need an annual plan or a policy for a last-minute trip, travel guard can deliver..

thumbnail

Travel Guard is one of CNBC Select 's picks for best travel insurance , thanks to its wide range of customizable policies. But are any of them right for you? Below, we review the provider and its offers and how they compare to the competition to help you choose the right travel insurance for your next trip.

Travel Guard review

Other insurance offered, how it compares, bottom line, travel guard® travel insurance.

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Policy highlights

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans to suit travel ranging from road trips to long cruises. For air travelers, Travel Guard can help assist with tracking baggage or covering lost or delayed baggage.

24/7 assistance available

  • A variety of plans are available to help cover different types of trips
  • Not all products are available for purchase online

Travel Guard® is a global travel insurance provider specializing in plans for leisure and business travelers. Its online travel insurance packages include five options, from basic and last-minute trip coverage to more comprehensive plans. This allows travelers to pick a plan that best matches their situation.

For example, budget-minded travelers might go for the Essential Plan which offers basic protections, such as trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance, coverage for lost, damaged and delayed baggage, and medical, evacuation and death coverage.

On the other hand, the Deluxe Plan — the most comprehensive option — adds such extras as missed connection coverage, security evacuation, travel inconvenience benefits and more. It also boosts high limits for essential coverages.

Last-minute travelers can opt for the Pack N' Go Plan which only includes certain post-departure coverages. Or, if you travel often, the Annual Plan can cover your trips throughout the year.

Finally, Travel Guard offers "offline" travel insurance packages, meaning you'll have to call if you're looking for a specialty plan.

Coverage types

Depending on the plan, here are the types of protection Travel Guard can include in your package:

  • Trip cancellations
  • Trip interruption
  • Baggage coverage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel medical expenses
  • Travel inconvenience benefits (reimbursement for such situations as runway delays, cruise diversion and other unforeseen situations)
  • Medical evacuation
  • Trip Saver (reimbursement for meals, hotels and transportation if you need to begin your trip sooner due to weather or airline changes)
  • Trip exchange (reimbursement in case you have to cancel your trip and book a new one due to covered unforeseen circumstances)
  • Security evacuation (due to a riot or civil disorder)
  • Flight guard (coverage for accidental death or dismemberment that occurs when traveling by plane)
  • Pre-existing medical conditions exclusion waiver

You can also customize your plan with add-ons, such as car rental insurance and "cancel for any reason" coverage .

Travel Guard landed on our list of the best travel insurance companies thanks to its variety of coverage. With plenty of options to choose from, both online and offline, it's easy to build a policy that meets your needs.

Travel Guard also features 24-hour concierge services that you can use to book a new flight in case of an emergency or delay.

The provider's website also offers informational resources — here, you can check travel news, read safety tips and find general travel advice. Additionally, the website lets you modify your plan, file a claim and check its status, or apply for a voucher or refund.

As of writing, Travel Guard doesn't offer any discounts. That's common for travel insurance — you're more likely to find deals when shopping for other types of insurance, such as home and auto insurance .

Travel Guard is a portfolio of travel insurance and travel-related services offered by AIG Travel, a member of American International Group (AIG). AIG also offers life insurance and a variety of business insurance products.

Travel Guard makes it easy to get a travel insurance policy customized to your needs. But before you purchase coverage, it's always a good idea to shop around.

For example, if you're going on a cruise, you might want to look at Nationwide Travel Insurance . The provider advertises cruise-specific insurance with three plan options available. This type of coverage is designed with issues unique to cruises in mind — from ship-based breakdowns to missed pre-pard excursions.

If you're planning a more active trip filled with rock climbing or sky diving, Berkshire Hathaway offers the AdrenalineCare® plan which features coverage for unforeseen costs that result from participating in extreme sports on your trip, as well as reimbursement for sporting equipment delay. Pre-existing conditions are covered under this plan (if you meet qualifying conditions).

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has multiple plans to cover vacations from luxury travel to adventure travel. The brand's LuxuryCare offers the highest limits of travel insurance coverage offered by the company. Quotes and policies are available online.

As you can see, offerings vary by provider. It can be helpful to compare multiple companies and the plans they offer to find what works best for you. It's even better if you gather several quotes to ensure you're getting a good price for your policy.

Money matters — so make the most of it. Get expert tips, strategies, news and everything else you need to maximize your money, right to your inbox.  Sign up here .

Travel Guard offers plenty of ways to customize your policy, making it a solid choice for travel insurance. You can also access additional options by giving Travel Guard a call. However, make sure to check out other travel insurance companies too — comparison shopping is essential when picking any type of financial product.

Tick Travel Insurance Top Cover Review: Pros and Cons

Published: Apr 24, 2024, 1:46am

When comparing Tick Travel Insurance’s pricing against cover levels in key areas, such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation, it can be considered a highly competitive player in the market. Travellers will likely appreciate the unlimited medical cover and $20,000 of cancellation cover available. Plus, the 24-hour medical emergency assistance line may offer added peace of mind. However, whether Tick Travel Insurance Top Policy will be suitable for you, will likely come down to whether cover levels across other areas of need will be high enough.

  • Competitive pricing
  • High levels of medical and cancellation cover
  • High customer service rating
  • Credit card fraud not covered
  • Higher levels of luggage cover elsewhere
  • Missed connections not covered

Tick Travel Insurance is owned by Europ Assistance which is a part of the global Generali Group, and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

Generali is a large global insurance and asset management provider, while Europ Assistance says it has a presence in over 200 countries, providing comfort and empathy to customers in emergency situations, and an immediate global response.

Tick Travel Insurance’s aim is to make travel insurance simple, covering travellers up to age 100. It offers three levels of domestic travel insurance: Basic, Standard and Top and four types of international travel insurance: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top.

This review will focus on the most comprehensive offering for international travel, being the Tick Travel Insurance Top plan.

Tick Travel Insurance provides domestic and international cover, offering policies for single trips and annual cover for multiple trips in a year. The provider covers adults up to the age of 100, while dependent children, up to 18-years-old at time of purchase, are insured for free on an adult’s policy.

As typical of travel insurance, its policies cover trip cancellation or curtailment and journey resumption, due to unforeseen circumstances such as injury or illness, as standard. Cover for travel delay is available on the top policies, with a pay out of $100 per completed hour up to $1,000. Valid reasons for claiming include bad weather, a vehicle breakdown or strike, and experiencing a delay of more than 12 hours.

Tick Travel Insurance’s Top plan also includes the following standard benefits that form a part of most comprehensive travel insurance policies:

Lost Luggage

This insurer covers the cost of repairing or replacing your lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings up to $7,500. Take note of the $3,000 sublimit— individual limit— on how much you can claim for devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, video cameras and cameras.

Tick Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical cover, which includes cover for ambulance and emergency surgery, repatriation if necessary, and the death of you, or another person insured on the policy.

While the insurer can cover pre-existing conditions (medical conditions you had before taking out the policy), whether you will be eligible for this cover will depend on the details you provide, outlining the condition and its severity, in the medical screening section of the application.

Is Dental Cover Included?

This insurer also extends its cover to dental treatment, paying out up to $500. This is half of what many providers offer, and bear in mind that you can only claim for dental cover for situations where you need immediate pain relief.

Yes, protection against risks in relation to Covid-19 are covered by Tick Travel Insurance’s Top policy. The insurer accepts related cancellation and disruption claims, as well as medical claims for trips outside of Australia.

What About Pregnancy?

You can claim for an extensive range of pregnancy or childbirth complications up to 31 weeks into your pregnancy with this insurer. These include toxaemia, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

What About Sports And Activities?

From abseiling, to jet skiing and motorcycling, insurance for 90 sports and activities is included automatically with Tick Travel Insurance.

Remember to look out for conditions for claiming. For instance, you will only be covered for three bungee jumps and can only kayak in grades 1 and 2 rapids or lower. Also, some activities may require safety gear that you will need to wear to make a valid claim.

Cover for personal liability and accidental injury only apply to certain activities, as specified in the PDS.

Compared to the competition, Tick Travel Insurance offers relatively decent to high levels of cover across the board for a super competitive price.

When comparing the price of its most comprehensive policy against those of Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz—two providers we rated highly for their comprehensive offering—it comes out on top.

The data below is based on a 28-year-old who needs insurance for Indonesia for seven days.

The above table shows how important it is to shop around for travel insurance, and weigh up your needs with your budget when comparing policies. Tick’s Travel Insurance’s Top policy is only $77, offers considerably more cancellation cover than its competitors for this price, and levies less in excess—the set portion of each claim you must pay.

However, it may not be suitable for those who need higher levels of cover in other areas such as lost luggage and rental car excess. You can find out exactly what a policy includes and excludes in its PDS, which is usually published on the insurer’s website.

You can also find out more about the comprehensive travel insurance providers Forbes Advisor Australia has independently rated the best.

Customers award Tick Travel Insurance a high score of 4 out of 5 stars across 2832 reviews on ProductReview, Australia’s leading consumer opinion site.

Satisfied customers were pleased with how simple they found the process of taking out insurance, and the price of their policy.

However, disgruntled customer complaints were varied. Some speak of technical difficulties with the provider taking payment and not offering a refund instead, trouble accessing their policy documents and rejected claims.

To speak to someone on Tick Travel Insurance’s customer service team, you can fill in the online query form or email: [email protected] .

For 24-hour emergency assistance, you can call: +612 9333 3963, and for emergencies and claims, email: [email protected] .

You can also send written correspondence to:

Customer Services Tick Insurance Australia Suite 1.04, Level 1, 19 Harris Street Pyrmont, 2009 Sydney NSW

Additionally, you can send a complaint via post, or email: [email protected] .

Tick Travel Insurance may be considered most suitable for those looking for reasonable to high levels of cover in key areas, for a competitive price. This includes unlimited medical cover and $20,000 for trip cancellation. In other areas cover levels are decent, but may not be suitable for all. Those taking away belongings worth over $7,500 or needing more than $4,000 in rental car excess may want to look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where can i find the tick travel insurance pds.

A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) details what it covers, any exclusions and limitations or sublimits. It’s crucial that travellers read through this document before deciding whether to purchase the policy.

Typically, an insurer will provide a link to a policy’s PDS on its website. The PDS for Tick Travel Insurance’s policies, including its comprehensive cover, are also online .

What is Tick Travel Insurance’s phone number?

Existing customers and those with service queries can fill in Tick Travel Insurance’s online query form should they need assistance, or contact at [email protected].

For 24-hour emergency assistance customers can call: +612 9333 3963.

How good is Tick travel insurance?

We have awarded Tick Travel Insurance 3.7 out of 5 stars based on factors such as the unlimited amount of medical cover, and high level of cancellation cover, it provides. It also scores highly on customer review site productreview.com.au.

However, customers should note it does not cover you, if you fall victim to credit card fraud while away. Neither are you able to choose the amount of cancellation cover you need as with some other insurers. This may not be of concern, considering $20,000 for cancellation is automatically provided, which is a considerable amount, and Tick Travel Insurance policies are competitively priced.

I have been writing for newspapers, magazines and online publications for over 10 years. My passion is providing, in a way that is easily accessible and digestible to all, the knowledge needed for readers to not only manage their finances, but financially flourish.

Tauck is all about your money and them. They could care less about you. The highlight of our trip to Ireland was to stay in the Dromoland Castle, we got there to find out that we were staying in a local Inn that was 1/8 of the cost and they refused to reimburse the difference and acted as if they could care less.

  8. Travel Insurance

Tauck's insurance is in fact really reasonable once you start looking around. For our independent tours, or tours with other companies, it is a standard 9% of the cost of the tour and flights, so of you have business class tickets, that's a lot of money. We are finding this out. One tour, we just insured the trip, not the flights as we ...

Travel insurance is a notoriously high margin commodity, meaning much of what your paying for is insurance company profit.
