I work fully independently, meaning I don't rely on commissions and focus purely on creating a truly unique and personalised travel plan for you.

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilisations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. Festivals and events in India

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervour of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of coloured powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolour Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colourful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colourful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Is tipping customary in India?

While travelling through India, on a tour or otherwise, it’s expected one would tip porters, drivers, restaurant staff and other service workers given the low wages they earn.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

If you do wish to purchase a local SIM in India, make sure your phone has been unlocked before your tour begins. There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travellers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Can I use my mobile while in India?

Yes, you’ll be able to use your mobile phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

Credit cards are being accepted an increasing number of cafes, shops, restaurants and hotels in India, with Mastercard and Visa being the most common. That said, cash is still king, especially outside of cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

What is ATM access like in India?

ATMs are widespread across India in both cities and smaller towns. Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Maestro are the most commonly accepted cards, but of those Visa and Mastercard are more likely to have success. The daily withdrawal limit differs from bank to bank.

What is the weather like in India?

The weather in India varies from region to region, but it’s generally safe to say that December–February sees dry, cooler weather before the heat intensifies from March–May. June, July and August are the monsoon months, though the amount of rain differs across the country, while October, September and November see rainfall ease once more.

Is India safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travellers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”

On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting.

Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.

Auroville, Tamil Nadu

If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. The community rewards sustained immersion."

Andaman Islands

Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits. 

While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.

Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day. 

Jaipur. Rajasthan

The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”

Udaipur, Rajasthan

T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms.  

If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins. 

Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.

India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.

How Team India is Keeping Travel Fatigue at Bay During the 2023 World Cup

Private charters, afternoon departures and cautious net sessions are helping Team India stay fresh during the World Cup.

From Guwahati to Pune, the Indian cricket team has already covered a distance of nearly 8,000 km and still has a substantial route to cover for their remaining round-robin matches in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. Rohit Sharma-led unit is the only team in the World Cup which is not playing more than one game at a venue and will be travelling the length and breadth of the country during the multi-nation event.

To keep the travel fatigue at bay and minimise burnout due to the exhaustive schedule, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ensured private charters and only post-lunch departures the day after the match for the Men in Blue.

“The team is flying on private charters. It’s a long World Cup and keeping the travel schedule in mind, we have ensured to have only charters. The timings of the flights also have been cautiously kept around the lunchtime after the match,” says a BCCI official.

There are some alterations when it comes to “tricky sectors” like Guwahati or Dharamsala.

“There are some changes – say a via private charter – when it comes to tricky destinations like Guwahati or Dharamsala but mostly charters are direct,” adds the official.

Shubman Gill was the only exception to this routine as the batter took a commercial evening flight from Chennai, where he was recovering from dengue, to Ahmedabad. He stayed back in Chennai while the rest of his teammates travelled to Delhi for the match vs Afghanistan.

The 24-year-old reached Ahmedabad late in the evening on October 11 while his team members reached the city as per the routine afternoon departure on October 12, a day after the Afghanistan fixture.

Ahead of all their matches, there has been low attendance in the nets on the eve of the fixtures. Two days before the game, packed houses have been seen. It was a full house, minus sick Gill, in Chennai two days prior to the game and a high-intensity open nets session took place in Pune on October 17 too. Between matches – India vs Afghanistan and India vs Pakistan – where there isn’t a substantial gap, the players have taken it easy.

Before the Afghanistan fixture, the bowlers relaxed in the team hotel and only Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, and Suryakumar Yadav were the few players who were present and before the Pakistan game too, Shami was the only frontline seamer who bowled at full tilt. He had R Ashwin for bowling company but most of the heavy lifting was done by the side-armers and net bowlers.

“The eve of the match is mostly an optional session, so the team tends to take it easy on that day. Rest, all sessions are conducted with the advice of the medical team. The workload of every individual is taken into account before those sessions. So again, that depends on individual to individual and how their body feels on a given day,” informs the BCCI official.

Not just Team India, but private charters for other teams too.

Keeping the extensive travel schedule in mind, the BCCI, hosts of the World Cup, have ensured private charters for all participating teams. It was the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) responsibility to get the teams to the venue of their warm-up fixture and the BCCI took over then.

“It’s not just the Indian team, we are arranging private charters for other teams too. It was ICC’s responsibility to get the team to their warm-up venue – say Guwahati or Hyderabad or wherever. From there on, we took charge and ensured seamless travel for other teams as well. Schedule of the charter is as per the requirements of the respective teams but our job is to ensure they get a private charter,” says the official.

Miles to go, and even more if they make it to the semis, and staying fresh is going to be of utmost importance for the Indian cricket team.

Pakistan and Afghanistan cricket teams have been issued visas for their travel to India for the Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign. The Pakistan players and support staff will be handed their visas for the quadrennial tournament on Tuesday.

Pakistan are all set to travel to India via Dubai on Wednesday, September 27. Babar Azam's men will reach Hyderabad via Dubai, 2 days ahead of their first warm-up match on Friday, September 29.

India Today has learned that Pakistan had applied for their Indian visas on September 19 and it's not uncommon to take 5 days to get their visas approved. Pakistan had initially planned to have a team-bonding camp in Dubai before arriving in Hyderabad but the team had to cancel that and straightaway land in India.

Pakistan will play two warm-up matches before their first match of the World Cup against the Netherlands, scheduled for October 6. Pakistan take on New Zealand in their first warm-up match in Hyderabad and take on Australia on October 3 at the same venue.

Pakistan and India meet in the marquee group stage match on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which will also host the World Cup opener between 2019 finalists England and New Zealand on October 5.

Pakistan are playing their World Cup matches across 5 venues with Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru hosting 2 matches each and Ahmedabad hosting the big-ticket clash.

Pakistan had headed into the Asia Cup as the No. 1-ranked ODI team but they were knocked out in the Super 4s stage after losing to India and Sri Lanka.

Solar eclipse underway in the US

Nearly all of North America can expect a partial solar eclipse , while a narrow corridor from Mexico to Atlantic Canada will experience a breathtaking total solar eclipse.

Even in areas where only part of the sun is blocked by the moon,  the temperature may plateau or even drop by several degrees . Shadows may also appear different during the partial solar eclipse.

Excitement grows in Ohio ahead of the total solar eclipse

AccuWeather's team coverage of the total solar eclipse continues with extreme Weather Chaser Aaron Jayjack, who is near Lake Erie in Ohio waiting for totality, which is expected to happen in the Buckeye State at 3:13 pm EDT.

He says the skies are clear, and the excitement is palpable among viewers who have brought cameras and telescopes to view the incredible event . Check it out:

Excitement is growing in Ohio ahead of the much anticipated solar eclipse. The last time Ohio was in totality was 1807, and the next time will be 2099.

Waiting for totality live from the Little Rock Zoo

In a little less than an hour, people and animals at the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas will experience the total solar eclipse.

As part of AccuWeather's team coverage, AccuWeather's Bill Wadell has been reporting live from the zoo all morning as employees and visitors anxiously wait to see not just the eclipse but how animals will react when the moon blocks out the sun's light.

Changes to temperature, wind speed and humidity happen   as the moon crosses in front of the sun and casts a shadow on Earth’s surface during a solar eclipse. The more sunlight blocked, the more dramatic the weather changes. The effect is comparable to how shaded areas end up much cooler on a hot day than any place in direct sunlight.  

A reduction in solar radiation, no matter how brief, can affect temperatures and other weather. The exact drop in temperature can vary widely based on other factors like cloud cover and the time of year. The time of year matters because the angle at which sunlight strikes the Earth affects temperatures, with a higher angle producing more intense sunshine and heat. The sun angle rises throughout the spring, reaches its peak in summer and starts to drop in the fall.

Temperatures during April’s event could drop around 10 degrees for up to an hour in the path of totality , said Andrew White, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. Temperature drops will be less pronounced in partial eclipse areas.

Traffic problems begin as people head toward path of totality in droves

Roads are becoming packed as people make  last-minute trips to the path of totality , the only area where the total solar eclipse will become visible.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 93 in New Hampshire is one area where a surge of eclipse travelers from Boston and southern New England is resulting in more traffic and slower speeds.

Traffic could become even worse immediately following the eclipse as thousands of people begin their journeys home at the same time.

When will totality happen where you live?

An estimated 32 million people live within the path of totality across the US , or locations where the moon will completely block the face of the sun from view for a few moments.

The eclipse will first appear over the South Pacific Ocean and begin its journey across North America. Mexico’s Pacific coast is the first point of totality on the path, expected at 11:07 a.m. PT (2:07 p.m. ET), and the eclipse is expected to end on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland at 5:16 p.m. local time (3:46 p.m. ET).

Those squarely along the center line of the path will see an eclipse that lasts between 3 ½ and 4 minutes, according to  NASA .

Try and spot these planets during the eclipse

The sun and moon will be the centerpiece of today’s total solar eclipse, but  during the brief period when the sky goes dark, onlookers should keep an eye out for a few other celestial objects .

Five planets may be visible, including  Jupiter and Mercury to the left of the sun and moon, and Venus, Saturn and Mars, which will be to the right of the moon. 

There is also the chance to see  Comet 12P , which will dimly glow between Jupiter and Mercury. EarthSky created a map to help onlookers spot the planets during the brief moments of totality:

No glasses? Make a pinhole projector to view the solar eclipse

To view the solar eclipse you need to protect your eyes. The easiest way is to wear eclipse glasses. If you don't have glasses, the next best option is to make a pinhole projector. It allows you to see what's going on in the sky without looking directly at the eclipse.

A pinhole projector is easy to make and allows you to view the eclipse safely without looking at the sun. All you need are two sheets of paper and a pin or thumbtack.

When viewing an eclipse, you should always protect your eyes with eclipse glasses. If you can’t get your hands on a pair, here’s another alternative.

Poke a hole in the center of one piece of paper and place the second piece of paper (or cardstock) on the ground. This will be your projection screen. Stand with the sun behind you and hold the paper with the pinhole so that it casts a shadow on the paper on the ground.

View the projected image on the paper below! Sunlight should make its way through the hole and be projected onto the center of the shadow. The farther away you hold your camera, the bigger your projected image will be. As the moon passes over the sun, you'll see that circle turn into a crescent and then back to a full circle as it moves onward.

New York Yankees push back start time of April 8 game because of solar eclipse

The New York Yankees announced it will push back its MLB game on April 8 because of the solar eclipse taking place that day.

The home game against the Miami Marlins was originally scheduled to start at 2.05 p.m. EDT. but now has been pushed back four hours to 6.05 p.m. EDT.

April's solar eclipse will last for over two hours in New York City , beginning at 2:10 p.m. EDT and ending at 4:36 p.m. EDT. The best time to look will be at 3:25 p.m. EDT, when 91% of the sun will be blocked out by the moon.

Fans will still be able to enter the ground from 3 p.m. EDT, with the first 15,000 fans in attendance receiving a free Yankees solar eclipse T-shirt.

Scientists excited to see how animals react during the upcoming solar eclipse

During the Great American Eclipse of 2017, zoo animals acting strangely took researchers by surprise — the giraffes gathered and broke into a gallop, the Galápagos tortoises began to mate, and the gorillas started to get ready for bed.

These odd behaviors were just a few of several anomalies that scientists stationed at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, South Carolina, observed during the historic solar event spanning the United States, according to a  March 2020 report .

“It was kind of amazing and mind-blowing,” said lead study author Dr. Adam Hartstone-Rose, professor of biological sciences at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Animal keepers at the  Nashville Zoo at Grassmere  also documented giraffes galloping during the brief moments in 2017 when the sky darkened in the middle of the day.

What happens to unprotected eyes when you look at the sun during a solar eclipse?

Looking at the solar eclipse can severely injure unprotected eyes. Even just a few moments of exposure can harm them; 30-60 seconds is enough to cause permanent damage .

Think of the eye like a camera. Light enters through the lens and then travels to the retina. Light focuses on the retina like film in a camera. Too much light can burn the retina. Because the retina doesn't have pain sensors, you may not even realize this danger until it's too late .

You need eclipse glasses to safely watch the solar eclipse. Even a few short moments of looking at the sun without eye protection can cause permanent damage.

Symptoms of damaged eyes include distorted vision, changes in color vision and blind spots. If you suspect you have damage to your eyes, visit your optometrist for a check-up.

How to tell if your solar eclipse glasses are fake

Eclipse glasses are the most popular way to safely look at the sun, as they use specially designed solar filters that can be worn with ease.

“Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the sun ,” NASA explained. The solar filters used in eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses.

As the big day draws near, experts say dangerous fakes have infiltrated the market as consumers rush to buy glasses.

The international standard for solar filters and eclipse glasses is ISO 12312-2 , and solar filters with this code printed on them should be safe to use . Still, experts urge onlookers to use caution, as scammers have begun faking ISO certifications.

Real eclipse glasses should not allow the wearer to see anything on a sunny day except possibly the sun’s reflection off a shiny surface or a puddle, which should appear very faint.

‘Shadow snakes’ among surprising effects of solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse can  change the weather and cause animals to behave in unusual ways , but one of the most mesmerizing sights is a phenomenon known as  shadow bands . “ Shadow bands are thin, wavy lines of alternating light and dark  that can be seen moving and undulating in parallel on plain-colored surfaces immediately before and after a total solar eclipse,” NASA said.  Their movement resembles snakes slithering on the ground, resulting in the nickname shadow snakes.

Shadow bands only appear about 60 seconds before totality and the 60 seconds immediately following totality. Additionally, they do not appear during every eclipse, so spectators will need luck to see them on April 8.

San Antonio on border of total eclipse, partial eclipse

Being in the right place at the right time is crucial for seeing a total solar eclipse,  especially in San Antonio , where some areas will experience totality while the rest of the city will only get a partial solar eclipse.  People in the city’s center will only see a partial solar eclipse , along with areas south and east of downtown.  This will be a completely different experience compared to people north and west of downtown San Antonio, where the total solar eclipse will be visible.

Everyone planning a trip to the path of totality should double-check to ensure they will be in the path , as folks who miss this event will have to wait 20 years for the next opportunity to see a total solar eclipse from the contiguous United States.

Twice in a lifetime: City prepares for eclipse extravaganza

Southern Illinois will be one of the most popular places in the country on April 8 as skywatchers gather at the “ eclipse crossroads of America ,” the nickname for Carbondale, Illinois. The city was in the path of the 2017 eclipse, and will once again see a total solar eclipse this year. “ We have a whole, long weekend of events lined up ,” Eva Fisher, Public Relations Officer for the City of Carbondale, told AccuWeather. Fisher said the entire  weekend will be packed with concerts, expos, and workshops, capped off by the main event on April 8 . Watch the full interview below:

NASA rockets to blast off during the height of the solar eclipse

The alignment of the sun, moon and Earth presents a  rare opportunity for scientists to study the planet’s atmosphere  and how it changes during the event. During October’s “ring of fire” solar eclipse across the western United States, NASA launched rockets from New Mexico and  aims to conduct similar launches on April 8 . “ Rockets will launch at three different times: 45 minutes before, during, and 45 minutes after the peak local eclipse ,” NASA explained, adding that the rockets would launch from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The goal is to  collect important data about the Earth’s ionosphere , a region between 55 and 310 miles above the planet’s surface that is crucial for communications. “Understanding the ionosphere and developing models to  help us predict disturbances is crucial to making sure our increasingly communication-dependent world operates smoothly ,” NASA said.

Eclipse fashion tip: Wear red and green

A total solar eclipse can have  unusual effects on animals, the environment and the weather , but the abrupt change in lighting can  play tricks on your eyes . “There’s this thing that happens in the eye as we transition from day to nighttime called  dark adaptation, but it takes about 20 to 30 minutes ,” Dr. Nicole Bajic, an ophthalmologist at the Cleveland Clinic, told AccuWeather’s Tony Laubach. During a total eclipse, day turns to night in a matter of minutes,  too fast for the human eye to adjust . The result is the  Purkinje Effect .

Total solar eclipse cloud forecast: Where will clouds spoil the show?

The countdown is on and in a few days, millions of people from Mexico to Canada will see a celestial spectacle unlike any other, but forecasters warn clouds could dash the hopes of onlookers in part of North America .

AccuWeather's latest total solar eclipse cloud forecast is looking promising for some but concerning for others, AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said. " Most places in the vicinity of the path of totality will have to deal with some level of clouds , whether high or low."

Over 40 million people to see total solar eclipse, weather permitting

April’s total solar eclipse could be one of the most viewed astronomical events of its kind in recent history.  Roughly 44 million people live in the path of totality , with millions more expected to travel to the path  in hopes of seeing the eclipse. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is the biggest population center in the path of totality, an area that more than 7 million people call home. “For North Americans,  there’s arguably never been a more populated and accessible path of totality, ” SPACE.com said on its website.

Despite the impressive numbers,  it will be a far cry from the most-viewed eclipse in history . On July 22, 2009, a total solar eclipse spanned parts of India and China with  an estimated population of over 420 million people living in the path , according to SPACE.com, roughly ten times that of the upcoming eclipse of April 8.

FAA warns of delays, disruptions at airports in path of totality

Major travel hubs from San Antonio through Cleveland are gearing up for a  surge of eclipse travelers, and not just on the roads . The FAA issued a notice that warned of possible  eclipse-induced impacts on air travel at airports in and near the path of totality , which in the United States extends from Texas to Maine. “There may be a higher traffic volume than normal anticipated at airports along the path of the eclipse.  Traffic should anticipate delays during peak traffic periods, ” the FAA explained on its website.  The busiest travel times are anticipated between April 7 and April 10 .

A select few flights plan to take off at just the right time so passengers can see the eclipse from the air . This unique experience will send spectators above potential cloudy conditions. However, the flight needs to take off on time as  any delay could keep the plane on the ground as the moon’s shadow passes overhead.

Don’t have eclipse glasses? Time is running out to buy them online

By this point, you’ve probably heard that you need special eclipse glasses, but depending on how you’re planning to watch the eclipse, there may be more you need to know.

Eclipse glasses will be a hot commodity on April 8 as using the specially-designed solar filter is the only safe way to look at the sun directly, and  the clock is ticking for last-minute shoppers . American Paper Optics is the  largest supplier of eclipse glasses in the United States  and still has glasses in stock, but shoppers need to  place an order before Thursday, April 4 , to have them delivered before April 8. Other online realtors are facing a similar delivery deadline. Shoppers may also be able to find glasses available at  local stores, libraries and eclipse-themed events, although availability may be limited.

Hotel in path of eclipse cancels reservations booked more than 1 year ago

Katherine Wilson and her family have been planning a trip to Niagara Falls for more than a year with hopes of seeing the breathtaking solar eclipse on April 8.  The popular tourist destination is a great spot for eclipse viewing, where the moon will block out the sun for 3 minutes and 30 seconds  with the thundering, world-famous waterfall nearby.  Then, everything changed when the hotel emailed her, explaining that their reservation had been canceled.

“ We presume that they cancelled a bunch of the lower-cost reservations and flipped them to make more money , whether or not that’s true, they’re not telling us,” Wilson told CTV News Toronto. She added that their  initial reservation was around $100 per night,  but last-minute reservations in Niagara Falls have  inflated to more than $1,000 per night . “We feel like  we had the foresight to book way in advance  for the eclipse, and we shouldn’t be punished for that,” Wilson added. According to CTV News,  the hotel explained the reservation was canceled due to a large group extending their stay through April 8 . Anyone who has made hotel reservations for the eclipse is encouraged to confirm the status of their plans before arriving at their destination.

Moon’s shadow to speed across North America at over 2,000 mph

A celestial sprint is about to take place with a dash of darkness that will create a brief but unparalleled sight for millions on April 8. During a total solar eclipse when the moon is between the Earth and the sun,  the moon’s shadow is cast on the planet below . Its dark inner shadow, called the umbra, is responsible for the total eclipse and will race across North America,  starting in Mexico and sweeping across parts of the United States and Canada.

“ The umbra is over land for just 1 hour and 40 minutes before moving into the north Atlantic, ” NASA explained. To traverse such a large distance in a short time,  the shadow of the moon will move faster than the speed of sound . In Mexico, the shadow will be moving across the land at around 1,500 mph, but it will accelerate as it shifts over the U.S.,  exceeding speeds of 2,000 mph by the time it reaches Ohio . 250,000 eclipse travelers expected to crowd into Pennsylvania city on April 8

On any given day, Erie, Pennsylvania, is the fifth-largest city in the state in terms of population, with  around 93,500 residents .  But April 8 won’t be a typical day . An estimated  250,000 people are expected to travel to the city  as it will be one of the few places in Pennsylvania where the total solar eclipse will be visible. The sudden surge in eclipse travelers will  catapult Erie past Pittsburgh to be one of the most populated cities in the state, second only behind Philadelphia , which has a population of around 1.5 million.

“ We are going to try to put cars everywhere possible on the roadways ,” Pennsylvania State Police Troop E Commander Capt. Kirk Reese told Pittsburgh-based news station KDKA. “And not only interstates because we know  as soon as the interstates get jammed, everybody’s electronic device will send them to a secondary roadway. ” Travelers should pack their patience on eclipse day, especially after the event is over, as millions of people across the country hit the roads at the same time.  Not only will there be elevated congestion immediately following totality, but there will be a higher chance of accidents  due to the sudden surge of vehicles on roads in and near the path of totality.

National Guard will be deployed for solar eclipse

The southeastern corner of Oklahoma will plunge into darkness during the total solar eclipse, and  although only a small portion of the state is in the path of totality, officials aren’t taking any chances . Three weeks before the eclipse, Oklahoma announced that it will deploy the National Guard on April 8. “McCurtain County Emergency Management requested our support because  they expect up to 100,000 additional people visiting their communities to watch the eclipse ,” said Lt. Col. Jabonn Flurry, 63rd CST commander. “ This influx of visitors has the potential to overtax local resources .”

Oklahoma City is located outside of the path of totality  and will only experience a partial solar eclipse, but in the  far southeastern corner of the state, onlookers will be bathed in the moon’s shadow for up to 4 minutes and 20 seconds , as long as cloud-free weather prevails.

‘Solar eclipse capital’ of the US gears up for 2nd solar eclipse in 7 years

The next total solar eclipse crossing North America takes place on April 8, 2024. A few towns in Southern Illinois were within the path of totality in 2017 and will be again this year.

Now, the  town is making final preparations for another total solar eclipse just seven years later , on Monday, April 8. “ We’re normally closed on Mondays, but due to the eclipse, we decided to open up ,” Marilynn Martin, an owner of a restaurant in Carbondale, told AccuWeather’s Emmy Victor. “ It puts Carbondale on the map .”

The area where the paths of the 2017 and 2024 eclipses intersect has been nicknamed “ the cross . ” AccuWeather Meteorologist and Storm Chaser  Tony Laubach plans on being in this area for the upcoming eclipse  as he was in the same area in 2017 when he witnessed the Great American Eclipse.

Where you need to be to see the total solar eclipse

The sun, moon and Earth will perfectly align on April 8 to create a spectacle unlike any other in nature:  a total solar eclipse . However,  you need to be in the right place at the right time for a chance to see it , or you risk missing the astronomical event of the decade.

To see the eclipse, you need to be in a narrow area known as the  path of totality , which will cover part of Mexico, a swath of the United States from Texas to Maine as well as parts of Atlantic Canada.  Anyone who is outside of this path will only see a partial solar eclipse , weather permitting. Because of the precise nature of the event, spectators should triple-check to make sure their viewing site is located inside the path of totality.  Even being outside the path by a few miles can be the difference between a partial solar eclipse and a jaw-dropping total solar eclipse.

NASA created a high-resolution map of the event to help people determine where to travel to see the event on April 8.  After 2024, the next total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous U.S. will not be until 2044.

Wolverines to Travel to Bloomington for Hoosier Collegiate

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team is in the stretch run of its spring season and are off to Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday and Sunday (April 6-7) for Indiana's Hoosier Collegiate. The 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Pfau Golf Course at Indiana University with 14 teams in the field.

• U-M will travel five starters to the Hoosier Collegiate. Junior Hunter Thomson , redshirt-junior Ben Hoagland , senior Will Anderson , junior Yuqi Liu and redshirt-junior Jack O'Donnell will make up the Wolverines' starting five. Senior Jude Kim will join them as an individual.

• There will be 14 teams among the field for the Hoosier Collegiate, including Butler, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, High Point, Indiana (host), IUPUI, Michigan, Michigan State, Murray State, Northwestern (individuals only), Notre Dame, Purdue Fort Wayne, Rice, Southern Illinois and Valparaiso.

• Thomson is expected to make his 33rd consecutive start. He has not missed a tournament for U-M in three seasons. Anderson is set up to make his 23rd straight start and 37th of his 38-event career. Liu has started his last 18 events, while Hoagland has started all 10 tournaments this season.

• Michigan has two team titles this season -- the Island Resort Intercollegiate and the Virtues Intercollegiate -- while collecting seven top-five finishes in the eight total events. Individually, U-M has had four medalists with three runners-up. The Wolverines have posted 14 top-10 and 10 top-five individual finishes this season. Thomson has paced U-M, closing as the top Wolverine in six events.

• Including 11 straight to start the spring season, U-M has had 23 of its 27 team rounds below par with a season-low 273 (-15) in the second round of the Island Resort Intercollegiate. Overall, the Wolverines average 283.81 per team round. The Maize and Blue has posted six 54-hole events under par, including two sub-30 finishes -- 830 (-34) at the Virtues Intercollegiate and 834 (-30) at the Island Resort Intercollegiate.

• Thomson has posted a 69.48 scoring average, a U-M record pace. He fired 24 of his 27 rounds at or below par with a team-best 19 sub-par tallies. He has highlighted the season with a career-low 64 (-8) in the final round of the Palmas del Mar, which ties Michigan's second lowest single-round score record, and marks the second time a Wolverine has reached that mark after Hoagland fired a 64 (-8) in the second round of the Island Resort Intercollegiate (Sept. 3-4). No Wolverine has finished a season with a sub-70 scoring average.

• With those six sub-par 54-hole totals, Thomson is averaging 208.44 per event, nearly eight shots under par. Overall, he has 17 sub-par 54-hole totals in 32 career events. During his career, he has averaged nearly even par per event (215.87).

• Thomson's career-low 201 (68-69-64, -15) total at the Palmas del Mar tied the program's second lowest single-round total, trailing only Kyle Mueller's record 198 (69-65-65, -15) at the 2015 Alister MacKenzie Invitational. This season, Thomson has two of the top three best individual 54-hole totals in U-M history -- that 201 total and his 202 (71-65-66, -14) at the Island Resort Intercollegiate (Sept. 3-4).

• With 12 sub-par single round tallies, Hoagland is averaging a career-best pace of 71.67 per round, nearly four shots better than any prior season. His average sits as the third lowest in a season for a Wolverine. Hoagland has posted five sub-par 54-hole totals after recording just one in his two prior seasons. He set a career low with his 206 (-10) total in the season opener at the Island Resort Intercollegiate.

• Alongside Thomson (69.48) and Hoagland (71.67), a total of four Wolverines are averaging below 72 per round.
