“A TENNIS EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE MISSED”

MIke, thank you so much. If you've ever considered going to the French Open, just do it. It's an amazing experience. We brought our whole family and had the most amazing night watching two of the greatest players of all-time battle it out. The tickets we got were unfortunately not able to be all 4 together, but we had tickets in the CAT Or in rows 1 and 4, two pairs. We'll be back again. Merci and a bientot! Judah

“Fantastic Seats - Well Done”

Hey Guys. Wanted to thank you for the phenomenal tickets you got us for the ATP Finals. We hoped to have seats behind the server and that's exactly what you guys delivered. Zvevrev beating Djokovic was not what we were hoping for, but that's sports! Thanks again, hope to use you guys for the US Open next year. Paolo

“Above and Beyond Service”

You've been nothing short of awesome. I really appreciate you, Mike, the seats are as you said all in the shade and 5 together..... We thank you so much for your assistance. Samson

“Amazing time in NYC!”

Hello Chris: Well we made it to the W hotel. We went to two Open tennis match"s. It was great, We saw Federer, Serena, Wawrinka, Goffin etc. Overjoyed! The 911 experience was well worth the price of admission and so was seeing the Statue of Liberty. We also went and seen To Kill A Mockingbird, starring Jeff Daniels off-Broadway. Hands down the best stage play I have ever seen. We even went to Central Park and saw where John and Yoko Lived. Also the memorial. Thanks for all the help, I was a little stressed. It was one of the best trips I have been on. Jeff

“Roland Garros 2019 Group - Huge Thanks!”

Dear Mike and Chris, I just wanted to send you a very huge thank you email for the tickets provided for the ROLAND GARROS 2019. We were a HUGE group, all coming from Ecuador, and the number of tickets we were able to purchase through you guys, was something amazing. Not even my uncle, who is the president of the tennis federation of my country, was able to get me these tickets. Also, 8 of us accomplished one of our dreams, seeing Federer and Nadal on a semifinal. I have included videos also of Roger and Rafa entering the stadium and the match point. Also, walking next to me, I had a nice chat and a selfie with Diego “el peque Schwartzman, who was leaving the court after winning the doubles 1/8 finals. Hope you enjoy the pictures. And 1000x thanks again! We hope to purchase more tickets through you in the future. Best, Freddy

“Incredible time in Rome!”

Chris, We had a great time at the tournament yesterday. We saw Fed, Nadal, and Djokovic play in one day! The hotel is really nice and close to everything! That was my third CTT trip and we've really enjoyed all of them. The Segway tour of Rome was one of my favorite memories from our trip. We also saw the Nadal-Tsitsipas match and it was also great! Our next trip will likely be to the French Open. Thanks again! John Malanga

“Wonderful Experience Down Under!”

Hi Chris, I wanted to thank you for the excellent service and delivering the quality seats you promised for the Australian Open. The seats were in the shade and excellent for viewing the matches. I plan to use your services for future ticket needs and refer you to friends looking for a quality ticket service. Thanks again, Bob

“Once in a lifetime experience!”

Hi. We're back from Wimbledon (certainly a magical place) and just want to thank you for your help getting there. It was a once in a lifetime experience -- great seats, great weather, and all the arrangements worked well. No drama in the tennis when we were at Center Court but we got to see Roger, Rafa and Serena all in one day -- couldn't ask for more. And although I would have liked to have seen the Federer/Anderson match, I probably would have been bummed to see Roger lose. (Mike: are you at the matches this week?) Am watching the Anderson/Isner match now (a nail-biter) and it's such fun to see the grounds and recognize them. Thanks again for your help. Gerry

“A thank you from New Zealand ”

Hi I just wanted to email to say what fabulous service we have had from you guys throughout our involvement for tickets to the Australian Open. We have just returned and had the most amazing time. Your people were so easy to deal with, with our barrage of questions given our nervousness of booking with a US company from NZ. Even when we called they were so accommodating, polite and knowledgable and every different rep went out of their way to help. Thank you Tennis Tours - we will definitely use you again!

Testimonial picture

“ Federer at the World Tour Finals!”

Chris, Just wanted to send you a quick note while we are in London to thank CTT for setting up our trip. Today we saw Federer vs. Cilic. The seats, which were in the SECOND ROW, were simply amazing! The hotel you booked is located a few tube stops away from the O2 arena. The hotel has a very modern appeal, and it’s in a cool area on London. Last night we went to a musical and we go back to the finals on Saturday. Once again, thank you!

Testimonial picture

“Well done! Thank you for taking care of my parents!”

Chris, Thank you and your team for making my parents weekend in NYC special. They were very positive with you all and had a great time at the hotel/location (me a wife really like it too), Wiked, and at the Open. Thank you for all the special request I had throughout the last few weeks to make this be special. My mom now wants to go Wimbledon, so you may here from me again! Best, Roberto

Best Destinations for a Tennis Vacation

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Tennis Courts

It’s that time of year to get out of the cold weather and go on a vacation. Make it a tennis vacation so you can keep up with your game and relax on the beach at the same time. There are many top tennis vacation spots all around the world, but here are some of our favorites to go to.

Rafael Nadal Tennis Centre – Costa Mujeres, Mexico

We all know that Rafael Nadal is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Now you can train like him on vacation when you visit Mexico! If you are a seasoned veteran or top junior looking to improve your skills, then this destination is made just for you. Located on the southeast coast of Mexico, outside of Cancun, you can enjoy a luxury tennis vacation with lots of sun and plenty of private beach space to relax. The tennis center is located in between two major resorts, the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa and the TRS Coral Hotel . This is the newest destination on our list – opening in November 2018 – featuring eight red clay courts, a soccer field, a paddle court, an exclusive Rafael Nadal Museum, a tennis shop and sports café . The tennis professionals are highly trained enabling you to maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. Although it comes at a premium cost, the facility and location will not disappoint.

JW MARRIOTT DESERT SPRINGS RESORT & SPA

JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa – Palm Desert, California

Most of the time when we think of Palm Springs or Indian Wells, we think of the BNP Paribas Open. However, minutes down the road is a magnificent resort that pulls out all the stops for tennis players alike. This might be one of the biggest hotels on our destination list, but it has a great selection of amenities geared for tennis. The hotel itself has 884 overnight rooms, two golf courses, two pools, a putting course, a huge spa and fitness center as well as four different restaurants on site. What makes it more special though is the tennis facility which has 15 hard courts, three green clay courts, two grass courts, three Peter Burwash International tennis professionals, a busy event schedule and pickleball available every day . All levels of tennis players can flock to this resort to find a competitive match, drill session or round robin tournament. Just a warning you may get lost a couple of times trying to find your way around and you will have to pay a pretty penny on accommodations/amenities.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel – Kohala Coast, Hawaii

Looking for a relaxing, laid back family tennis vacation? Then the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is right up your alley. This hotel is located on the northwest coast of the big island with great views of the ocean. There are 11 hard courts that are within feet of the crashing ocean waves making for a picture perfect background setting. All age levels can enjoy private or group instruction, daily clinics, social tennis events and round robin tournaments . Additionally the hotel has about 260 rooms for lodging, seven dining areas, an 18-hole golf course, private beach, fitness center and a spa/salon so you can enjoy your vacation experience to the fullest.

The Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne Tennis Center

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne – Key Biscayne, Florida

Located on the island of Key Biscayne, this luxury resort lets you soak in lots of tennis and enjoy the Caribbean experience at the same place. The resort is minutes away from Crandon Park and downtown Miami with a secluded setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. You will find plenty of tennis activities on site thanks to the Cliff Drysdale tennis center that keeps the facility busy all year around. There are 10 green clay courts and one hard court with daily clinics, private/group lessons, junior instruction and private events . Touring pros like Andy Murray , Serena Williams and Genie Bouchard even stop by every once in awhile to do charity exhibitions before the Miami Open. There’s a lot to like about this resort and tennis program.

IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy

IMG Academy – Bradenton, Florida

Many top tennis pros enjoy vacationing/training at the IMG Academy for its state-of-the-art facilities and pristine weather conditions. The academy has grown over the years to become a mecca for the professional sports industry. This is largely thanks to legend tennis teacher Nick Bollettieri who wanted to create a unique training environment for top junior players and professionals to train all year around. The academy does have instruction for all levels of tennis players, but most clinics/lessons are geared towards higher level league and tournament players. The tennis facility has 33 outdoor hard courts, 18 outdoor green clay courts and four indoor hard courts available for daily usage. Plus players will get top notch instruction everyday from pro level coaches with access to a spa, fitness center, lodging and on-campus dining . Their program is pretty demanding with 5-hour training sessions per day, but it is worth it when you see your end of season or tournament results.

The Racquet Club at Baha Mar

Baha Mar – Nassau, Bahamas

If you want fun in the sun and non-stop activities on your next vacation, then check out Baha Mar. This mega resort is perfect for tennis players and non-tennis players! Located on the north coast of Nassau overlooking the great Atlantic Ocean, you will find breathtaking views and premium amenities whenever you choose to stay. The resort itself is comprised of three different hotels, a giant casino, private golf course, spa, a grottoed pool with waterfall, dozens of restaurants/cafes/bars, several art galleries, fashion boutiques and a privately landscaped 3,000 foot beach . Additionally there is a phenomenal tennis facility run by Peter Burwash International professionals with six hard courts, three har-tru clay courts and one grass court all lighted so you can play whenever you want.

Horseshoe Bay Resort Tennis Courts

Horseshoe Bay Resort – Horseshoe Bay, Texas

Horseshoe Bay Resort is a great option for tennis players that want to take a quick weekend trip away without paying a high price. This resort is uniquely situated just west of Austin and right next to Lake LBJ in the Texas country side. For players of all levels and ages, this place is a great spot to go because of the different tennis activities and courts available. Junior players will find three dedicated Kids’ courts with daily instruction and competitions to perfect their game. Adults will find six red clay courts, eight hard courts, an artificial grass court and eight pickleball courts . The event calendar is busy with private or group lessons, regular clinics, tournaments and round robins . In addition the resort has three options for accommodations, five restaurants, three golf courses, an 18-hole putting course, four pools, a spa, a fitness center and a white-sand beach along the lake .

Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies

Four Seasons Resort Nevis – Nevis, West Indies

One of the first Four Seasons Resorts built with a premium tennis facility, this is another great option for all kinds of tennis players. Located on the beautiful West Indies you will never get enough of the great atmosphere, friendly people and laid back Caribbean vibe. Although the resort is smaller in size with 196 rooms and 50 private villas , it’s built with luxury at the forefront thanks to the Four Seasons brand. If you are not in the mood for tennis, you can walk along Pinney Beach, play some golf, unwind at the spa, work out in the fitness center, learn to scuba dive or even go snorkeling in crystal clear water . The activities here are built for fun no matter your age and skill level. Whenever you do decide to play some tennis, there are 10 different courts you can pick from with four hard courts, four red-clay courts and two Astro-turf courts . Additionally there are five courts lighted for night play, daily instruction, regular clinics and premiere events so you can enjoy your time in the Caribbean sun.

Depending on what amenities you are in the mood for and how far you want to travel, these high-class tennis destinations may be the perfect options. Tennis Vacations: The Top 10 U.S. Tennis Resorts

Rancho Valencia in California. Here is one of the places to find the best tennis vacations in the US.

Tennis Vacation? Here are the Best Tennis Resorts in the U.S.

By Roger Cox

Tennis vacations: Find the best tennis resorts in the US. Tennis resorts.

Because I’ve spent almost three decades writing about tennis travel, the people I meet often ask, “What’s your favorite tennis resort ?” or “where do you go for a tennis vacation ?”

The unspoken implication is that the favorite of a tennis player who has literally visited hundreds of resorts must also be the best tennis resort. And yet there are places I love that I would never recommend to friends, knowing that their needs and mine are totally different.

A great resort for a hard-core tennis junkie like me, who relishes five hours a day of demanding group clinics, will seem like torture to someone who merely wants to play matches, with perhaps a lesson or clinic on the side.

The place I’d choose for a romantic weekend isn’t where I’d go if traveling alone or with kids. Budget influences my choices; so do the needs of those traveling with me.

Kiawah Tennis Resort, Hawaii. photo courtesy Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Tennis vacations

Still, the question of the best tennis resorts lingers. To answer it, I ask the avid tennis players who visit my website, Tennis Resorts Online.

They evaluate the tennis resorts they know first-hand based on a score of criteria, from tennis facilities,  the tennis instruction, and instructional programs to the creature comforts, even children’s programs.

Then each year, I convert those evaluations into rankings and publish a list of those they rate the best.

An overview of the Top 10 U.S. Tennis Resorts

1. Kiawah Island Golf Resort , Kiawah Island, South Carolina . Any resort with not one but two tennis clubs has obviously made a more than the typical commitment to tennis, but Kiawah has gone even further by putting both under the attentive direction of former touring pro Roy Barth. Now Roy’s son Jonathan runs the operation with Roy being ‘Director Emeritus.’

Now entering his 40th year at the resort, Barth has carpentered together a broad-based program that features a lengthy roster of weekly activities, including junior tennis options and tailor-made programs for groups and teams with daily clinics for all skill levels.

Add 10 miles of pristine beach, so pristine turtles nest there and an elegant oceanfront hotel and spa, five designer golf courses, an abundance of other recreation, a dedicated children’s park, rental condos, and numerous shops and restaurants all within an easy drive of historic Charleston, and you can understand how this resort so completely seduces tennis vacationers. website

Rancho Valencia tennis center

2. Rancho Valencia , an Auberge Resort, Rancho Santa Fe, California . With 17 courts for its 49 suites, this elegant Relais & Chateau retreat in the Rancho Santa Fe, 25 miles north of San Diego, obviously regards tennis as a central amenity.

It backs that up with warm, gregarious staff bent on ensuring that whatever your tennis needs—or those of your kids—they’ll find a way to fulfill them. Personal attention, on the court and off, is a hallmark of the resort.

The Boulders, Arizona. Tennis vacations

They take such good care that tennis comes to feel like just one more creature comfort, joining a 10,000-square-foot spa and a superb restaurant devoted to California coastal ranch cuisine.

But it’s the amenity-rich suites that draw rave reviews: None is smaller than 850 square feet and all have gas-log fireplaces and sprawling private garden patios, and complete entertainment centers, while the best add steam showers, jetted tubs, and outdoor Jacuzzis.

All are so spacious and alluring that you never want to leave this luxury resort, which makes the discreet delivery of fresh-squeezed orange juice and a newspaper all the more welcome. website

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii.

3. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel , Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii . Built in 1965 by the legendary hotelier Laurance S. Rockefeller and completely updated following an earthquake in 2006, this landmark hotel exudes old Hawaiian tradition and hospitality while affording 21st-century comforts.

Set amid tropical gardens and museum-quality Pacific Rim art, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel looks down from a black-lava point on a perfect crescent of white-sand beach on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast.

It emerged from the $150-million remake with enlarged and enhanced the rooms, a spa, a new suite of restaurants, and Rees Jones update to its challenging Robert Trent Jones oceanside golf course.

Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms South Carolina.

Its active, 11-court tennis complex got a general spiffing up, too, but what makes it exceptional is a spectacular setting so close to the sea that players occasionally call timeouts to watch the whales and bottlenose dolphins passing just offshore.

Tennis Director Craig Pautler has set up the epitome of a well-run hotel tennis program: excellent game matching, lessons and clinics, social tennis, and programs for racquet-wielding kids.  Head Tennis Pro Wayne Barnes and Tennis Pros Hector Mendoza and Dan Klug are available for lessons  website

4. The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa, Carefree, Arizona. A haunting outcrop of 12-million-year-old granite guards this 1,300-acre Arizona resort picturesquely set in the Sonoran Desert in Carefree, north of Phoenix.

One of the pools at the Boulders resort in Scottsdale.

Winding paths through a botanical garden of desert plants and flowers lead to Southwestern adobe-style casitas decorated with hand-hewn wood beams, Indian jars, and aromatic wood-burning kiva fireplaces.

Balconies look out on this remarkable landscape, accented by the green rivers of golf fairways.

The eight-court tennis complex spreads through an oasis of willows, feathery paloverde trees, cactus, and flowering shrubs, making it not only the most beautiful setting for tennis in greater Phoenix but also one of the most active.

His method melds perfectly with rejuvenating classes and treatments at the Golden Door Spa, a serene sanctuary set against those magnificent boulders. website

5. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort , Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The 25-court Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center has adopted a clever modular approach to group instruction. Director Dale Light takes a holistic approach to his teaching, focusing on the intricacies of technical skills, tennis biomechanics, and well-being, on and off the court, and schedules a couple of yearly Nike tennis camps as well.

Because the clinics and drill sessions are scheduled back to back, you can essentially carpenter together a program to fit your specific needs, whether you want an hour of work or as many as four and a half.

Many of the junior tennis programs (which start in March) take place during the same morning hours, so the whole family can go to the courts together.

Fall tennis is beautiful at Topnotch at Stowe Tennis Resort.

If you’d rather play, the staff works conscientiously to put together competitive matches, and custom designs packages for groups and teams. The resort itself begins along three miles of some of the best beaches on Hilton Head and extends inland across the island to Shelter Cove on a deep inlet.

Within its 2,000 acres are three designer golf courses, a shopping plaza, several restaurants, two oceanfront hotels, hundreds of rental condominiums, and some 10 miles of lagoons, making it an ideal family getaway. website

Topnotch Tennis Center, Stowe Vermont

6. Topnotch Resort and Spa , Stowe, Vermont . Fresh from a renovation that completely refurbished its 76 rooms, moved and enlarged the swimming pool, enhanced an already stellar 40,000-square-foot European spa, and installed a new, more casual restaurant, this winsome New England inn has never looked better.

Caneel Bay, US Virgin Islands. Photo by Roger Cox.

Tennis, unfortunately, has temporarily lost a few courts in the process—it’s down to 10 hard and clay tennis courts four of them indoors—but that hasn’t diminished the quality of its tennis programs. Milan Kubala is the Director of Tennis at Topnotch.

During the May-to-September outdoor season, its tennis academy affords avid players the option of 3 to 5 hours a day of solid instruction and fast-paced drills, while others elect simply to play (staff arranges opponents) or take group or private lessons.

Simultaneous junior programs divert kids and encourage families (as do 1-to-3-bedroom townhomes).

Need more? There’s also an equestrian center with guided trail rides, golf nearby, and a bevy of shops, restaurants, and nightlife in Stowe, five miles away to the east. website. You can also rent mountain bikes and enjoy a ride on trails here.

7. Saddlebrook Resort , Wesley Chapel, Florida. As a gated, resort/residential community in Wesley Chapel, north of Tampa, Saddlebrook seems like an unlikely venue for one of the truly hard-core tennis programs on the planet.

Howard Moore is the Tennis Program Director at Saddlebrook and Alvaro Betancur is the Director of Coaching. For many of its tennis guests, aspiring juniors, the rigorous training—and staff to match—and 45 hard, clay and grass courts are precisely what draws them here.

As an adult, you’ll face a grueling five-hour-a-day regimen of drills designed to improve both technique and conditioning (the junior program is similar). Once the day’s session ends, you’ll be grateful for the hot tubs that ring the lake-sized swimming pool and for the services available in the spa.

And because this is one of the top Florida tennis resorts, there are other amenities as well, including restaurants, bars, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. And, not incidentally, the kitchen-equipped condo accommodations have excellent beds. website

8. Caneel Bay , A Rosewood Resort, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Like the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Caneel Bay on the island of St. John traces its origins to Laurance S. Rockefeller.

He built not a hotel but clusters of one- and two-story shingle-roof structures—a total of only 160 rooms (none with phones or TVs)—strung along seven beaches and the hillsides behind on what had once been a sugar plantation.

Topsl Resort, Destin, Florida. photo courtesy TOPS'L Beach & Racquet Resort

Equally important, he donated land for a national park, thus ensuring that the backdrop would forever be a forest of subtropical trees, not condominiums. The waters offshore are all part of a protected marine sanctuary, rich in colorful reef life.

That looms as tough competition for its tennis complex, yet the 11-court facility nonetheless stands out as a hotbed of activity, drawing guests and locals alike, thanks to the attention of tennis management company Peter Burwash International and its game-matching services, well-attended clinics (adult and junior), and social round robins. website

9. TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort, Destin, Florida. Depending on your perspective, TOPS’L is either a tennis resort with a beach or a beach resort with tennis, but either way there is no competition from golf or any other recreational amenity.

Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Photo courtesy of Wild Dune

That alone underscores the high value this narrow sliver of a Panhandle resort puts on tennis.

It specializes in staging lots of on-court activity—clinics, round robins, lessons—on a daily basis and supplements that with selected weekends devoted to team competition.

The enthusiasm of the entire staff, from tennis director Joe D’Aleo on down, makes these dozen courts a haven for vacationers eager to divide their time between tennis and a glorious beach, all soft sugar-white sand and towering dunes lapped by the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Other lures: a vast campus of factory-outlet stores nearby and varied dining options in Destin and beyond. website

Wild Dunes Tennis center in Charleston, SC

10. Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Reviews of this barrier-island resort variously highlight its 2½ miles of dune-lined beach, its stellar (and free) children’s programs, the diversity of its tennis roster and other recreation (including two Tom Fazio golf courses), and something rare in an island escape: easy access to the historic houses, restaurants, and culture of Charleston, an easy 15-minute drive away.

The 17-court, mostly clay court tennis complex snagged a central location just across the road from a 93-room boutique hotel and a new plaza called The Village, lined with condos, shops, a market and restaurant, a day spa, a fitness center, and even an amphitheater that stages live entertainment.

Local tennis members mingle with guests, ensuring both camaraderie and good turnouts for the various clinics, workouts, and round robins as well as ongoing programs for juniors. website

Top 10 Tennis Travel Locations in USA

tennis travel usa

Tennis enthusiasts (like ourselves) often seek destinations that combine the love for tennis with the general excitement of travel. In the United States, a country with a rich tennis history, tennis resorts and academies offer unique experiences for both amateur and professional players.

Below we’ll give you our view of the top 10 tennis locations and resorts, depending on your situation, style and needs. There will also be some ideas and tips to think about when doing tennis travel in the USA.

Choose your season carefully depending on location and remember to plan your itinerary. Consider your skill level and interests when selecting destinations and accommodations.

Varied Climate and Landscapes

The US offers a wide range of geographical landscapes, from coastal beaches to mountainous retreats, providing diverse settings for tennis resorts. It’s really up to you to find your favourite setting and climate among a great number of top locations.

Thanks to the varied climate across the country, tennis can be enjoyed year-round. States like Florida and California are popular for their sunny weather, ideal for winter tennis getaways.

Many resorts offer not just tennis courts but also state-of-the-art fitness centers, spa services and other types of activities. Several resorts also make it into a challenge to cater to families, offering tennis programs for all ages along with other fun activities for kids. This means there is much more than just tennis to research when choosing a holiday spot.

Tennis Academies and Training Programs

For those looking to improve their game, many resorts provide clinics, private coaching or camps led by experienced professionals. In most resorts, these programs cater to any type of levels, even beginners. We also recommend participating in local tournaments or social mixers as it’s a fun way to meet other tennis enthusiasts.

I think Newport, and more specifically the tennis facilities at Newport Casino, should be included as a top ten tennis destination in the US. Why?

1) Only ATP tournament in the US played on grass, and you can play on these courts as a visitor. 2) More than 100 years as a tennis venue: Competitive tennis has been played here since 1881, the first year of the tournament which is now US Open was played. Played in Newport until 1915, when it moved to Queens, NYC. 3) Home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. 4) Newport, RI, is right on the Atlantic with access to fantastic beaches, very comfortable climate in the summer months, and historically interesting with fantastic beach mansions from the Gilded Age. 5) Newport is arguably the sailing capital of the US, every final of the America’s Cup 1930-1983 was held here and it is easy to combine a tennis oriented visit with a visit to the Sailing Hall of Fame.

You can go to any major US city and find a generic tennis center with great facilities and service. Without having been to all of the places you list, my guess is that the experience in Tucson is very similar to the one in Scottsdale, and playing in Orlando will be similar to playing in Miami. What sets Newport apart is that it has a unique vibe and truly feels like a place where tennis matters.

Josh & debbie buch, 2023 us open.

It was absolutely amazing. The trip was very well organized. The hotel was great and its location just wonderful. The tickets to the US Open were just perfect. The guidance and explanation, and assistance by Michael and Jessica were perfect. We just had the best of time.

Jan & Alison Hanshaft

Five Stars all the way! My wife and I had Wimbledon on our bucket list, planning to do this only once, but after the experience that MAC Sports Travel provided, we will be doing many more July trips to London. Michael, Jessica and his team provided any type of support, assistance or recommendations that you would need. The hotel is in the perfect location in Chelsea to get to the tournament, into the city or airport all by the tube system. Wonderful Breakfasts, nice clean rooms, great pubs and restaurants all within walking distance to hotel. Thank you for a wonderful trip. We are sorry it ended so soon. Jan and Alison

Charlie and Amy Thorne

2023 french open.

Amy and I had an absolutely fantastic experience with Michael and his team at Mac Sports Travel! We attended our first French Open and Mac made it a 5 Star experience for us with transport from and to CDG airport, wonderful hotel accommodations, excellent tickets at Roland Garros, special welcome and tasting event at a local restaurant AND a great tour of Paris. Having him and his team on site gave us an extra level of comfort and security knowing that they would be there to look after us. We’re looking forward to our next destination trip with them!

Pheobe Ashcraft

2023 laver cup, dulce goddard.

We just returned from our trip to Paris arranged by Mac Sports Travel. My sister and I are big Tennis fans and we love to see Rafael Nadal play in person maybe for the last time. We arranged a trip to Roland Garros from Miami and used Mac Sports Travel. We chose them because of the wonderful reviews we read about the company and they did not disappoint. Mac Sports was a joy to work with, very professional and knowledgeable from beginning to the end. We rate them10 out of 10, They took care of everything with ease, from airport transfers, to the choice of hotel, to the welcome dinner/ met with the team and our group, to the incredible seats we received which included hospitality suites at Roland Garros. They accommodated our request to see Moulin Rouge and was happy they even went with us to the dinner and show. The tour of Paris/cruise on the Seine is an icing on the cake. We really enjoyed this trip because of the Mac Sports team headed by Michael and his 3 angels: Jessica, Neil and Julia.. We felt special and safe throughout our stay, they definitely earned our business. We highly recommend Mac Sports and intend to use them again to go to Australia open in 2024.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Tennis' powerbrokers have big plans. Their ideas might not be good for the sport.

tennis and travel

The overlords of professional tennis have some big plans − big for their pocketbooks, big for their power over the sport and big for a group of players at the top who already enjoy a pretty comfortable life on tour.

Big for fans? Big for players trying to break into the top 100? Big for tennis generally as a sport with a robust worldwide following?

That remains to be seen − and there’s plenty of reason to be skeptical of the way the four Grand Slam tournaments might be trying to commandeer control over the entire tennis calendar.

According to a report Tuesday in The Athletic , more meetings will take place this week around the event in Madrid as the leaders of the four Grand Slam tournaments try to sell players and agents on their version of tennis’ future.

And it will undoubtedly be a compelling vision: Fewer tournaments, a longer offseason and more money − including equal pay for men and women − with the creation of a premium tour centered around the four Grand Slams and 10 other big events around the world.

On the surface, it sounds great. Who doesn't want to work less for better pay? By pooling the media rights of the four biggest tournaments in the world − the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open − along with some Saudi investment, no doubt, you can create great events that make top players very rich without asking them to grind their bodies to dust globetrotting for 25-plus weeks a year to cash checks and collect ranking points.

You can, in essence, build a tennis version of Formula 1.

But there’s one big problem with that theory: Tennis isn’t Formula 1. It’s a sport where your week-to-week ranking either creates an opportunity or a challenge. It's a sport where fortunes rise and fall, a sport where it's possible for somebody like American journeyman Chris Eubanks to change his life because he got hot for a few weeks on the grass last summer. It's a sport where you eat what you kill and you get what you deserve. It’s a sport where the mere existence of tournaments around the world have inspired future champions.

Is that all about to change?

Details are still scarce. But there’s no doubt that major changes are afoot in the structure of tennis, with the four Grand Slams on one team and the ATP/WTA tours on another.

Up until now, the Slams have all operated as independent entities. Though they collaborate occasionally on some issues, they each own their two-week place on the calendar and the massive amounts of revenue that they generate but little else. The ATP and WTA sanction the week-to-week tournaments that make up their tour schedules and sell their media rights as part of a combined package, but each event is owned and operated individually in terms of ticket sales and certain sponsorships.

Last week, for example, there were smaller men’s tournaments in Bucharest, Romania; Barcelona, Spain, and Munich while there were women’s tournaments in Stuttgart, Germany, and Rouen, France. On the surface, this doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would you have Munich and Barcelona competing to attract top players instead of one bigger tournament where they’re all in the same field competing for bigger prize money?

It’s a fair point! And it’s exactly the problem that golf is currently grappling with thanks to LIV Golf poaching some of the world’s top players from the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. All sports are better when the best are playing the best as often as possible.

But in the reported version of a premium tour that is owned and operated by the Grand Slams, the only tennis that will really matter takes place 14 times a year. Every other tournament, essentially, is reduced to being part of a developmental league where there’s no real incentive for top players to participate.

And that’s a potential disaster for tennis writ large.

Don’t believe me? Just listen to Roger Federer, who famously volunteered to be a ball boy at the Swiss Indoors, a tournament that drew the likes of Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Michael Stich − all Wimbledon champions he idolized growing up.

"I was able to see the best players in the world firsthand, how they would prepare, how they would sweat, how they deal with the pressure," he said in a 2017 interview with Tennis TV. "At heart, I’m always going to be a ball boy."

Does Federer become Federer if he doesn’t have an ATP tournament coming through his hometown of Basel?

Maybe that’s too dramatic. But in a premium tour designed by the Grand Slams, tournaments from Charleston, South Carolina, to Washington, D.C., from Rio de Janeiro to Guadalajara, Mexico, and from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Vienna essentially become irrelevant.

Do those tournaments always get the best players? No. But they’re big events locally that players love, that sell a whole lot of tickets and put tennis front and center in those markets on an annual basis.

What purpose does it serve to tell fans that those tournaments don’t matter anymore? How does that grow the game?

Some of the ideas behind a premium tour are solid. Equal prize money, which exists at the Grand Slams but not everywhere else, should be a priority. Better television exposure than the current mishmash of tennis media rights would benefit fans. Knowing when and where the big stars are going to show up is helpful for sponsors and ticket buyers.

But if the four Grand Slams wrest control of the sport and marginalize everything but the 14 biggest tournaments, the sport becomes ossified. The path to building new stars, creating interest at the grassroots level and giving young prospects a chance to rise through the ranks becomes more complicated.

Is that worth fattening the pockets of a few dozen players at the top of the sport and the tournaments themselves? That's the question at the heart of tennis’ backroom civil war. How it turns out, at this point, is anybody’s guess.

Men’s Tennis Team on a Quest for First Patriot League Title

Tournament top-seed terriers travel to west point for four-day tournament this weekend.

Charles Moore (COM’24)

Last year, the Boston University men’s tennis team reached its first-ever Patriot League championship match, but fell 4-0 to then top-seeded Navy. This year, the Terriers have posted a perfect 6-0 record in conference play and are the No. 1 seed entering this weekend’s four-day conference tournament at Army West Point’s Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.

The Terriers begin play in the tournament quarterfinal on Friday. Each round will stage nine possible matches. Three doubles matches are played first, with the school that wins two of three clinching the round’s first point. Then, a possible six singles matches will be played—each singles match is worth one additional point. The school earning four total points will win the matchday.

Dejan Stankovic (Wheelock’08,’11,’15), men’s tennis head coach, says he is confident about the program’s chances of capturing its first-ever Patriot League title.

“I know we’re really good,” Stankovic says. “For other teams to challenge us, they’re going to have to be at their best. I am definitely not underestimating the competition, but I think we’re playing really well, so I’m feeling pretty good going into this tournament.”

Last year’s third-place regular season finish was the first top-3 Patriot League finish for the BU men’s tennis program since 2016, earning them their first-ever PL championship match appearance. The Terriers have not won a conference championship since 1996, when they played in the America East conference.

“We haven’t won a conference tournament in decades,” Stankovic says. “So maybe there’s some type of a target on our back, but [we have] more of a sense that we’ve got a really good shot.”

Cocaptain Owen Voigt (Questrom’24) says he’s seen the program improve from a 3-18 record in 2021 to this year’s 18-7 finish. He says that while the roster hasn’t changed significantly during his four years at BU, the team’s confidence has more than doubled.

“We’ve had pretty much the same guys for the past three years,” Voigt says. I think our confidence in ourselves and our teammates has grown a lot. We all believe in each other. I am the oldest guy on the team, and I’ve seen it all—I haven’t been on a team where it was like this before, where we all just believe in ourselves. Every single match that we play, we know that we are the better players.”

Photo: A college tennis player wearing a red Boston University shirt and white shorts hits a tennis ball at a recent match

Headlining the Terriers best finish during their Patriot League tenure is six-time PL Player of the Week Corey Craig (CAS’26). The reigning PL Rookie of the Year went undefeated in his four most recent matches, against Lehigh on April 12 and Army-West Point on April 14.

Although Craig has set the Patriot League record for weekly accolades in a single season, Voigt and Stankovic agree that the team’s biggest asset has been its willingness to come together—a rarity in such an individual sport as tennis.

“It can be pretty difficult to get a group of 8 to 10 individuals to work together towards one goal, but I’ve never seen a team where we’re as together as we are on this team,” Voigt says. “What’s different is that we all believe in each other. I tell the guys, and what our coaches say is: everybody can bring value during a tennis match, no matter if you have a racket in your hands or not.”

Stankovic lauds his team, but reserves special commendation for cocaptain Voigt.

“Owen is one of those guys that just gets the team going,” the coach says. “He’s so selfless—he’ll do anything for the team to win. And I feel like you can’t find a player like that too often. So the culture of our team is a lot better because we have a captain who demonstrates that and walks the walk every single day.”

Voigt says he’s focused on getting his teammates prepped for a successful weekend in West Point. “I’m just just trying to get everybody excited,” he says. “This year, we have a target on our back, which we haven’t had in the past couple of years. Being the number one seed and beating all of these top teams already this season and going to the tournament undefeated, everybody wants another shot at us. So we have to be ready for other teams to punch us back.

“But I think that we will be able to handle any team that comes our way. So I’m just getting everybody to be super confident in themselves and making sure that we’ll be able to work together over this next week to bring it home.”

The Boston University men’s tennis team will begin play in the 2024 Patriot League Championship Tournament on Friday, April 26, at Army West Point’s Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. Live statistics will be posted on goterriers.com and updates will be posted live via Twitter @BUGameDay and @TerrierTennis.

Tennis Briefing: Is a WTA ‘Big Four’ coming? What’s eating Andrey Rublev?

Tennis Briefing: Is a WTA ‘Big Four’ coming? What’s eating Andrey Rublev?

Welcome to the Monday Tennis Briefing, where The Athletic  will explain the story behind the stories from the last week on court.

This week, the European clay swing kicked off in earnest across the ATP and WTA tours, with tournaments in France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and Romania. The four best women’s players faced off in Stuttgart, Barcelona witnessed the return of Rafael Nadal , and we saw a serve from zero gravity.

If you’d like more tennis coverage, please  click here .

Are the WTA and ATP tours swapping their metas?

For the past year, there’s been some chatter about a ‘Big Four’ forming in women’s tennis. It was a ‘Big Three’, comprised of Iga Swiatek , Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka, but then Coco Gauff won the U.S. Open and became a seriously consistent presence in the business end of tournaments, including the semi-finals of the Australian Open. She also climbed to No 3 in the rankings. At the same time, the rapid emergence of Carlos Alcaraz, succeeded by the slower burn of Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev being Daniil Medvedev , and the elastic continuity of Novak Djokovic forged new rivalries on the ATP tour.

The last few months have thrown a wrench into that thinking. Despite being without a Grand Slam title since last year’s French Open, Swiatek continues to show every sign of being a dominant world No 1 for a good while. The other three haven’t delivered the kind of consistency that would really justify using a name that has its roots in the Roger Federer/Djokovic/Nadal/Andy Murray dominance of the 2010s.

A decade on, it is easy to forget how often those names landed in the last weekends of the biggest events. Consider 2012: of the 16 semi-final spots in that year’s four Grand Slam tournaments, Murray, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic accounted for 12 of them. Murray, Djokovic and Federer also took three of the semi-final spots at the London Olympics that year.

In Stuttgart last week, a rare mid-level tournament to attract the top four women, it looked like they might pull off a semi-final sweep. But then Marketa Vondrousova beat Sabalenka, and Gauff lost to Marta Kostyuk, with Elena Rybakina winning the tournament.

Next up, Madrid. Maybe the quartet will be the last four standing this time.

Tennis’ top women say the sport is broken. This is why

What’s behind Andrey Rublev’s eight-set slump?

Good tennis players can see their form nosedive. Right now, it’s Rublev’s turn .

Rublev was world No 5 at the start of the year. He played to his seeding at the Australian Open, but he has been in a bad way since he was defaulted in the final games of a semi-final match in Dubai against Alexander Bublik in February.

Rublev angrily protested a call to a line judge. Another line judge claimed the Russian had used profanity in his native language.

The tournament officials refused to review tapes before they defaulted Rublev and he was stripped of his ranking points and prize money earned.

The video went viral, and the ATP eventually restored his rankings points and the money he had earned — but the damage had been done. Rublev has won just one match since then, and he has lost to players ranked far lower than he is, including world No 44 Alexei Popyrin and last week, world No 87 Brandon Nakashima, which saw Rublev destroy his racket after losing match point.

The encounters have not been very close either. Rublev has apparently been healthy, but he’s just not playing very well, having dropped eight sets out of 10 since the default in a string of four consecutive defeats.

These stats aren’t awesome, but they aren’t exactly on a decline as steep as his match results. However, take a look at something else…

‘Dominance ratio’ is calculated by dividing the percentage of return points won by the percentage of service points lost. The last time Rublev’s dominance ratio was this low was in 2015, when his ranking high for the year was No 185 in the world and his ranking low was No 438.

Coco Gauff does what Coco Gauff does… for how long?

Gauff gets a ton of accolades for her grit, her competitiveness, her ability to gut out tight matches, especially across three sets.

The American may have all those qualities, but she can also do math.

Gauff has played 25 matches, winning 19 and losing six. Of those 25 matches, eight have gone the distance, and of those eight, she has lost four.

That’s two losses in 17 two-set matches, and four losses in eight three-set matches.

What does all this mean?

tennis and travel

Sure, her coach Brad Gilbert is the greatest espouser of winning ugly, but it has to include the “winning” part. Gauff pretty much always shows up, and it’s worth remembering that of those two straight-set defeats, one was against Sabalenka in the Australian Open semi-final.

She could still do with being a bit more clinical. As thrilling as it is to watch Gauff fight , as wild as it is to watch her win matches when she is far from her best, slim margins eventually catch up with players. That’s what happened in Stuttgart against Kostyuk, a player Gauff beat in three sets in Australia but who returned the favour in Germany.

It’s a microcosm of the coin flip that her three-setters have become.

Listening to women: The slow rise of female tennis coaches

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud peak — but at the right time?

Tsitsipas and Ruud are two of the best clay court players in the world. Ruud has made the finals of the last two French Opens. Tsitsipas made the one before that. Unfortunately, their opponents in those finals, Nadal and Djokovic, have won a combined 46 Grand Slam titles, 17 of them at Roland Garros.

Still, Tsitispas and Ruud have earned the right to build their clay seasons to peak at the French Open, because both should be alive deep in the tournament and, depending on how the draw breaks, they might have a shot at winning it too.

tennis and travel

The way things are going, they might not have any fuel left in their tanks.

For a second consecutive week, Ruud and Tsitispas met in the finals of a tournament, this time in Barcelona, where Ruud avenged his loss to the Greek in Monte Carlo . It was Ruud’s third event of the clay-court season and Tsitispas’s second, with Madrid and Rome — both competitions just under the level of a Grand Slam — taking up the next four weeks of the calendar before Roland Garros starts. That’s a lot of tennis, even for players in their mid-twenties, such as Ruud and Tsitispas.

Yes, this is the time of year when clay-court standouts try to pile up rankings points and prize money, but is it too much? Djokovic certainly thinks so, at least for him. A master of conserving energy and peaking at the biggest events, Djokovic played Monte Carlo, losing to Ruud in the semis, but he took last week off and has pulled out of Madrid too. He will likely play Rome, then head to Paris — fuel reserves on high.

Kick it, real good

It is a truth universally acknowledged — at least by readers of beloved British children’s author Michael Rosen — that if you can’t go over it or under it, you’ve got to go through it .

Brazil’s raw but rising star Joao Fonseca does not acknowledge this truth.

I Can Easily Walk 10,000+ Steps in These Ultra-cushioned Sneakers That Require No Break-in Period

Out of 10+ pairs I own, they're the comfiest for travel.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

I once packed a single pair of ballet flats for a weekend trip to New York City and was forced to walk thousands of steps a day in discomfort. Since then, having a pair of supportive shoes has been a top travel priority for me. While that typically means opting for sneakers, I have found over the years that not all sneakers are built equally, and some are far superior than others.  Right now, the pair reigning supreme in my closet are the Alo Recovery Mode sneakers , which the brand just re-released. Not only are they the most comfortable pair of sneakers I have worn in a long time (the inner cushion feels like I’m walking on a foam mattress), but they are also versatile enough to go with any outfit, making them a practical choice to pack for my vacations.

Alo Recovery Mode Sneakers

The sneakers are designed with streetwear style in mind, so I’ve been able to wear them with dresses, jeans, and athleisure. I typically opt for more athletic-looking sneakers, which sometimes feels like too stark of a contrast when worn with anything other than leggings or joggers. With this pair, I’ve found styling them to be easier since they are more versatile.  I wear these sneakers for walks around my neighborhood and during long days of running errands, and the comfort, stability, and support they provided was noticeable throughout the day and after walking more than 10,000 steps. They kept my feet and legs ache-free thanks to the structured outer sole and high-rebound foam insole, both of which support pressure points in the feet, knees, hips, joints, and back, according to the brand.  The Recovery Mode Sneakers have more than 200 five-star reviews, with customers also noting how comfortable and stylish they are. One shopper called these a “wardrobe staple” and added that they are “perfectly cushioned” and are the “perfect shoe” for a “long day of teaching pilates, post workout,” or for a “casual evening out.” Another reviewer even gifted them to a “ballet dancer” who “lives in New York and walks many miles a day” and said that they “can’t believe how comfortable they are.” Even people “who have a lot of foot pain” noted that they “feel amazing after a long day of walking.” The sneakers come in six colors, including all white and a combo of gray, pink, tan, and navy with white. Discover Moscow

Moscow for everyone: Here's how to enjoy the Russian capital whatever your passion

© Discover Moscow

Flanked by the imposing buildings of the Kremlin, the stepped granite blocks of Lenin’s Mausoleum and the fanciful onion domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow's Red Square is nothing short of legendary, but only a taste of what the Russian capital has to offer.

Manicured gardens and parks, brutalist monuments, quirky museums, open-air cinemas and glitzy boutiques co-exist in this storied city, which burst into the 21st century with a slew of restaurant openings and grand urban schemes.

Visitors have never had it so easy, with a raft of digital innovations designed to facilitate and enhance the tourist experience.

One such is the RUSSPASS , a new e-service that allows users not only to plan and book attractions in Moscow and across Russia, but also to create bespoke itineraries to suit every type of interest and budget. The RUSSPASS app is available in English and Spanish and allows tourists to buy e-tickets and to top up the balance of a Moscow transport card.

Beyond caviar and ballet

Moscow’s burgeoning gastronomic scene has been causing a stir locally and internationally. Published for the first time in 2021, the Michelin Moscow Guide awarded its prestigious stars to no fewer than nine of the city’s restaurants. A total of 69 restaurants were recommended, with three of them awarded ‘green stars’ for sustainability. Fifteen restaurants received the ‘Bib Gourmand’, which acknowledges excellent cooking at affordable prices.

Time-honoured haunts for blinis and caviar include the baroque Café Pushkin and the formidable soviet-themed Dr Zhivago , while the glass-domed White Rabbit , whose chef starred in Netflix's 'Chef's Table', continues to dazzle with creative twists on classic dishes. Also creating a stir is Twins Garden , which focuses on wildly inventive vegetable dishes and home-grown produce.

euronews

As the country emerges from the pandemic, music, theatre and exhibitions are also back on the agenda. A performance from the matchless Bolshoi Ballet has been a hot ticket since the 18th century, but the Bolshoi Theatre is just one of more than 700 Moscow cultural centers.

These include world-renowned palaces of art such as the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts , a remarkable collection bringing together masterpieces from every major Western movement as well as Egyptian antiquities.

Lesser-known but equally fascinating galleries lie all over the city. An offshoot of the Tretyakov Gallery, the New Tretyakov Gallery also focuses on modern Russian artists, and features works by Kandinsky, Chagall and Popova, among many others.

Moscow's wealth of parks and curious architecture make it a great place for children. The fairytale colours of buildings such as St Basil's Cathedral are every match for the architectural whimsy at Dream Island , a huge indoor theme park where cartoon characters wander through the crowds.

The shiplike Northern River Terminal, built in the 1930s in a Stalinist style, is also a favourite, and has recently undergone dramatic renovation. It now includes a wealth of children’s playgrounds, heating swimming pools and a winter ice rink.

euronews

Other ways to keep the little ones entertained include catching a movie at the Khudozhestvenny cinema or a trip on the Moskva River cable car. This vertiginous ride has panoramic views over the city, taking in the Moscow river, the Ostankino TV and radio tower and the skyscrapers of the business district.

These and other activities for children and families are laid out in the official city tourist portal, discovermoscow.com . Here you’ll find information on every type of attraction, from which animals can be petted at the VDNH city farm to the best street food snacks and where they can be found.

It’s a huge and colourful resource, covering the most obscure museums and secret parks, with suggestions for different days of the week and a blog-style news section. On a practical level it lays bare the transport system, COVID-19 protocols, Wi-Fi possibilities and where to hire bikes and scooters.

Rising to current challenges with innovation

euronews

Not only its attractions, but also Moscow’s enormous efforts to face the health crisis in practical and forward-thinking ways have been acknowledged on the international stage. In 2021 it has been nominated for both World’s Leading City Destination and Europe’s Leading City Destination at the World Travel Awards.”

The authorities’ support for the travel industry in troubled times has seen dozens of online events and international tourism conferences, as well as the launch of the Moscow Travel Hub, a collaborative platform to promote the creation and development of new products and services.

The spring of 2021 saw the Moscow Travel Hack, an extensive hackathon in which finalists were offered financial support for the implementation of their products, at a time when digital tourism solutions have never been so integral.

Digital tourists can use discovermoscow.com to take a virtual trip to the ballet or opera and even watch cooking or fashion shows. Together with the wealth of detail and endless images of the site, even armchair travellers can experience the wonders of Russia’s greatest metropolis.
