If the 80s music soundscape were to have a mural, The Cure's Robert Smith would take up a significant amount of space as you would not miss his deep and piercing dark eyeliner, a mound of tousled hair, and an all-black outfit. Indeed, he is one of the most recognizable and iconic figures in the rock music scene; but above all, The Cure has etched their indelible mark into the consciousness of Gen Xers with their music. Formed in 1978 in Crawley, West Sussex, The Cure was at the eye of the post-punk and new-wave moment that was burgeoning in the United Kingdom. Hence, they were quickly labeled as a gothic rock band. Over the years, frontman Robert Smith was vocal about his aversion to this genre classification. "It's so pitiful when 'goth' is still tagged onto the name the Cure", says Smith. "We're not categorizable. I suppose we were post-punk when we came out, but in total it's impossible … I just play Cure music, whatever that is."

The Cure's music is quickly judged as dark, moody, brooding, depressing, and gloomy. To a certain extent, yes, they have deep cuts like "Blood Flowers", "Burn", "Fascination Street", "Killing An Arab" and "Pictures of You"… Yet The Cure has yielded a distinct number of upbeat and poppy love songs that have brought them colossal commercial success around the world. Rock magazine Spin stated that "The Cure have always been an either/or sort of band: either … Robert Smith is wallowing in gothic sadness or he's licking sticky-sweet cotton-candy pop off his lipstick-stained fingers." Think "Boys Don't Cry", "In Between Days", "Friday I'm In Love", "Just Like Heaven", "The Lovecats", or "Lovesong"… Indeed, they're an immensely successful mainstream band that have sold over 30 million albums on a global scale. The Cure has also been recognized by almost every major music award-giving institution. The band bagged two Brit Awards (Best British Video for "Lullaby" in 1990, and Best British Group in 1991), and a Viewer's Choice (Europe) MTV Video Music Award for "Friday I'm In Love" in 1992, while Robert Smith picked up an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement in 2001. Then in 2019, The Cure gained important recognition was they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2019.

Despite the back-combed hair, dark makeup, and reputation as goth’s saddest boys, the Cure’s discography has always struck me as surprisingly upbeat and optimistic with bubblegum pop hooks about being happily in love (frontman Robert Smith has been married to his mysterious muse Mary Poole for over 35 years—she’s one of my favorite internet rabbit holes!)  Sing along to ’80s favorites like “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Friday I’m In Love,” and “Lovesong” and hopefully some new material as well (they’ve been teasing a new album since last year). And, considering that band hasn’t stepped foot in the PNW since 2016 (approximately 50 years ago in COVID years), you should probably see them now.

The Cure Announce First North American Tour in Seven Years

The 30-date trek kicks off in May

The Cure will soon embark on their first North American tour in seven years.

Today, the Robert Smith -led outfit announced the North American leg of “The Songs of a Lost World Tour.” The 34-date outing takes place between May and July and includes three nights each at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York City. The itinerary also includes shows in New Orleans, Houston, Austin, San Francisco, Vancouver, Denver, Montreal, Atlanta, Miami, and more. The Twilight Sad will provide support for the duration of the tour.

Update – April 5th: The Cure have announced additional dates in San Diego, Montreal, and Atlanta, as well as a new show in Portland, Oregon. Frontman Robert Smith has also teased that concerts in Mexico and South America will be revealed later this month.

Ticket Details

A Ticketmaster Verified Fan pre-sale is set for Wednesday, March 15th via Ticketmaster . Fans are able to register for up to five different shows. Apart from “a few Hollywood Bowl charity seats, there will be no ‘platinum’ or ‘dynamically priced’ tickets on this tour, according to a press release.

In a note posted to social media, The Cure further revealed that tickets will not be transferrable. “We want the tour to be affordable for all fans, and we have a very wide (and we think very fair) range of pricing at every show… If something comes up that that prevents a fan from being able to use a ticket they have purchased, they will be able [to] resell it on a face value ticket exchange.”

A New Album on the Horizon

The tour comes in support of The Cure’s long-awaited new album of the same name, Songs of a Lost World . Smith has been teasing the record for several years: in an interview last year, he described it as “the best thing we’ve done.” He went as far to liken the album to 1989’s   Disintegration , saying it’s “pretty relentless” and “doesn’t have very much light on it.” However, despite previously promising that Songs of a Lost World would be out by the end of 2022, the album is still without a release date.

During a European tour late last year, The Cure debuted two new songs called “Alone” and “Endsong,” which are presumably taken from Songs of a Lost World .

The Cure adds 4 more North American concerts; dates in Mexico, South America to come

The Cure today expanded its Shows of a Lost World 2023 tour by adding four additional North American dates, including second concerts in San Diego, Montreal and Atlanta, plus a new stop in Portland, Oregon, that bandleader Robert Smith says is an “experiment” to see whether simply using non-transferrable tickets is “enough protection” to keep seats out of the hands of scalpers.

The new concerts are set for May 21 in San Diego, May 31 in Portland, June 17 in Montreal and June 28 in Atlanta, the band announced this morning on social media .

Anyone with previously issued, but unused, Ticketmaster Verified Fan presale codes “from any market” will have the first crack at tickets for San Diego, Montreal and Atlanta, the band says. That presale begins at 10 a.m. local time Friday, April 7, with a limit of four non-transferrable tickets per person.

“Please, please, please don’t buy tickets if you don’t intend going (sic) to the show,” Smith writes on Twitter.

If tickets remain to those concerts after the Verified Fan presale, a public on-sale is set for 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, April 8.

Additionally, non-transferrable tickets for the new Portland show will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Friday, April 7, with no Verified Fan presale. See thecure.com for more details.

Smith also revealed, in a tweet on Tuesday , that The Cure is planning to play in Mexico “and seven of the 12 sovereign states of South America” — the details of which will be announced before the end of this month.

The Shows of a Lost World tour will find Smith joined by his longest-serving bandmate, bassist Simon Gallup, as well as drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell and guitarist Reeves Gabrels. Smith surprised fans last fall by bringing back guitarist/keyboardist Perry Bamonte, who played in the band from 1990 to 2005.

The Cure announced what initially was a 30-date North American tour on March 9, and spelled out efforts to thwart scalpers and try to keep tickets affordable — including by barring the transfer of tickets, prohibiting resale above face value and the use of the  Ticketmaster Verified Fan system.

When tickets went on sale, though, sky-high demand meant many fans were shut out from even getting codes to access the presale that began March 15 — and through which it seemed most of the seats available at the 30 shows were sold. Fans also grumbled as the band’s attempts to keep prices low were met with services fees that, in the most extreme cases , exceeded ticket prices.

By the time the general on-sale rolled around on March 17, Smith had secured partial refunds of Ticketmaster’s “unduly high” fees that he had felt “sickened” by. Still, by the Friday general on-sale, the majority of tickets already had been sold and buyers quickly snatched up most of what was left.

Smith has urged fans to use face value exchanges like  twickets.live  if they need to buy or sell tickets, and repeatedly has asked fans not to buy tickets to the shows in Denver, New York City and Chicago from ticket brokers, as they are in states with “laws protecting scalpers.” According to Ticketmaster, it those three states, “state law prohibits artists from restricting resale.”

Last week, Smith announced that he’d been informed that approximately 7,000 tickets to the band’s North American tour have been canceled because they were bought with “fake accounts” or listed on the secondary market. A day earlier,  Smith had tweeted  about how ticket scalpers were getting around The Cure’s attempt to limit the digital transfer of tickets by reselling entire Ticketmaster accounts, with tickets included — a method  detailed by Vice’s Motherboard in an extensive article  last month.

All tickets bought that way,  Smith continued , will be canceled and the original fees won’t be refunded — instead the fees will be donated to Amnesty International, “and the tickets themselves will be resold to fans.”

The 7,000 canceled tickets were linked to 2,200 individual orders, Smith wrote on Friday. “These are tickets acquired with fake accounts/listed on secondary resale sites,” he wrote. Any fans who believe their tickets have been “wrongly canceled” should contact Ticketmaster via  @TMFanSupport  on Twitter, Smith added.

The Cure has announced a string of South American dates as part of their “Shows Of A Lost World” tour. Robert Smith shared the news on his Twitter account, writing, “2023 IN ARGENTINA: BRAZIL: CHILE : COLOMBIA: MEXICO: PARAGUAY: PERU: URUGUAY… BUT SORTING OUT THE DEALS IS TAKING A BIT LONGER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD… MORE DETAILS WHEN THEY EXIST… ONWARDS X.”

It’s been a decade since the group last visited South America as part of their “The Great Circle Tour” in 2013. As Smith noted, details are not yet available, but dates can be assumed to follow the North American leg of “Shows Of A Lost World,” which begins this week in New Orleans and continues through July 1st with a final date in Miami.

After initially announcing their first North American tour in seven years, the band confirmed additional dates due to outstanding demand that included new dates in San Diego, Montreal, and Atlanta, as well as a new show in Portland, Oregon.

The band originally attempted to make their shows as affordable as possible by offering zero “platinum” or “dynamically priced” tickets and also only limited their sales to those registered as Ticketmaster Verified Fans in an attempt to prevent scalping.

The Great Circle Tour will see Smith joining with her longest-running bandmate, bassist Simon Gallup, as well as drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell, and guitarist Reeves Gabrels. The Cure frontman surprised fans last year by onboarding guitarist/keyboardist Perry Bamonte, who played in the band from 1990 to 2005.

As more tour details emerge, fans are anxiously anticipating news of the band’s next album, Songs of a Lost World , which Smith said could be released prior to The Cure’s fall tour last year.
