Arequipa is a picturesque town and also the second-largest city in Peru. Local markets, beautifully built colonial architecture, and El Misti volcano are among the things you’ll see while walking the cobblestone streets of the white city.

What are the best things to do in Arequipa?

Tell anyone that you traveled to Arequipa, and the first thing people will ask is, “did you try the food?” Don’t miss your chance to sample what many consider to be the best local dishes in all of Peru at one of the best restaurants in Arequipa . While walking around the city, don’t miss the historic Santa Catalina Monastery, spend time in the beautiful central plaza, and learn about Juanita, the Inca Ice Maiden , at Museo Santuarios Andinos.

Where is Arequipa?

The city of Arequipa is located in the department of Arequipa in the south of Peru, sharing borders with the departments of Ica, Ayacucho, Cusco, Apurímac, Puno, and Moquegua. Its longest border is with the Pacific Ocean.

How many days should I spend in Arequipa?

For Arequipa city, one or two days should be enough to cover the city highlights, but you can easily spend a week or more here visiting museums, eating great food, and venturing out to explore the countryside. To visit Colca Canyon , you’ll need an additional one to three days.

What is the elevation of Arequipa?

Arequipa is at 7,660 ft (2,335 m) above sea level - about 3,280 ft (1,000 m) less than Cusco or Puno - and few travelers ever experience altitude sickness here. However, the road between Arequipa and Colca Canyon reaches altitudes of 13,100 ft (4,000 m). You’ll notice the difference if you get out of the car and try any strenuous activity, such as climbing or sprinting. Gladly, these activities are not part of a standard tour of Colca Canyon. Stick to the comfort of your car, bus, or van, and you should have no problem.

What is the population of Arequipa?

How far is arequipa from _________ by bus.

The following are popular inbound bus routes to Arequipa:

  • Bus from Lima to Arequipa: 16 to 18 hours total
  • Bus from Cusco to Arequipa: 10 hours total
  • Bus from Arequipa to Puno ( Lake Titicaca ): 6.5 hours total
  • Bus from Arequipa to Chivay ( Colca Canyon ): 3 hours total

When is the best time to visit Colca Canyon?

May to November is the high season for tourism to Colca Canyon. The weather is warm during the day and cold at night. Be sure to make reservations for accommodation in advance. The end of the rainy season (April and May) is also a great time to visit because the terraces will be brilliantly green with crops and flowering plant life.

What is the elevation of Colca Canyon?

Many towns of Colca Canyon are higher in elevation than Arequipa (2,335 m or 7,661 ft) and about the same as Cusco (3,400 m or 11,150 ft). Take the same precautions as you would in Cusco – stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals or alcohol on your first days at altitude, and drink the local remedy coca leaf tea. Take a few days to acclimate before attempting any strenuous activity.

How deep is Colca Canyon?

The average distance from the peaks of the mountains to the river below is 10,200 feet (3,109 meters). This distance makes Colca one of the world’s deepest canyons. Nearby Cotahuasi Canyon is a few hundred meters deeper.

Which Colca Canyon trek should I do?

For a taste of high altitude Andean trekking, many travelers choose a Colca Canyon trek as a less expensive, less crowded alternative to the Inca Trail. The most popular route departs from Cabanaconde descends to the oasis resort town Sangalle. It’s an unrelenting slope whether you are going up or down - usually 3 hours for the descent and 5 hours for the ascent. Mules are available for hire from any of the lodges in Sangalle.

Where can I eat in Colca Canyon?

Choices for dining in Colca Canyon are limited but adequate for one or two nights. Most Colca Canyon hotel offer on-site restaurants serving a la carte or buffet-style meals. Towns such as Chivay and Yanque offer a greater selection.

Are there direct flights to Arequipa?

From within Peru, direct flights to Arequipa are offered to and from Lima, the capital of Peru, and Cusco city.

  • Lima to Arequipa flights: 1.5 hours non-stop
  • Cusco to Arequipa flights: 1 hour non-stop

Flight to Rodríguez Ballón International Airport

The quickest way to reach Arequipa is by plane but this means you will miss seeing everything along the way. The airport does not receive international flights so this option is only available to those already in Peru. Upon arrival, take a taxi for a 30 minute ride to Plaza de Armas where most hotels and hostels are located.

Public buses from Lima take roughly 17 hours to reach Arequipa with no stops. Although you can find some comfortable buses, usually being the most expensive ones, it is a long journey and you will miss all of the things to see along the way.

Peru Hop bus

Peru Hop has buses to Arequipa, as well. Our bus passes include stops where you can choose to hop off along the way to Arequipa. Our stops from Lima to Arequipa include Paracas, Huacachina and Nazca. If you take a Peru Hop bus From Cusco to Arequipa you can choose to stop and hop off in Puno.

There is a lot of tours and sightseeing options in Arequipa. The main attraction in the Arequipa area is the picturesque Colca Valley, an area of incredible beauty. It is one of the world’s deepest canyons, reaching a depth of 4,160 meters and it is home to the famous Andean Condor birds. The valley also has a vibrant indigenous culture including many examples of Inca agricultural terraces and irrigation systems, hot springs at La Calera as well as a range of activities from adventure sports to tourist homestays. A wide range of tours, treks and excursions leave Arequipa daily and we can facilitate or recommend tours to anybody on board, just simply contact us or ask your Peru Hop guide!

For all the architecture lovers, the city is also known as “La Ciudad Blanca” or the “White City” due to the beautiful white structures seen around the city built out of “sillar”, a white rock obtained from the numerous nearby volcanoes. The historical centre of the city is home to numerous religious convents, monasteries, catholic churches and museums. For this reason, the Historical Centre has been named a Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. With all of this beauty and history, Arequipa is the perfect place to enjoy a walking tour.

The local cuisine in Arequipa is argued to be the most varied in all of Peru and while in Arequipa we encourage you to check out many of the traditional “Picanterias” to try out the local dishes such as Rocoto Relleno (Can be quite hot so make sure to ask in advance), Alpaca Steaks, Ocopo, Chactoad and many more. As well as this, the nightlife in Arequipa is amongst the best in Peru with many late-night bars and nightclubs.

More Information

Carmen alto viewpoint.

It is located in the Cayma District, and is located 6 km from the center of Arequipa and is owned by Mrs. Miriam Cáceres, who has a small business of natural products and traditional juices there.

In this haven of peace, we can be enchanted by the landscape, enjoying a wonderful view of the valley of the Chili River, joining in the distance with the tutelary volcanoes of the city.

St. Catherine’s Monastery

The Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, or also known as the Convent of Santa Catalina, is a religious tourist complex located in the historic center of Arequipa.

What makes the visit especially interesting is that the monastery is itself a small city, 20,000m2 surrounded by a 4-meter-high wall that separated the life of the cloistered nuns from that of the rest of the inhabitants of Arequipa.

History of the Monastery of Santa Catalina

The history of the Monastery of Santa Catalina dates back to the 16th century. When the Spaniards were already settled in Peru, Francisco de Toledo visited the city of Arequipa and listened to the wishes of its inhabitants, who asked for the creation of a place where the nuns could carry out their work and have the religious life they desired.

Thus, the viceroy ordered the construction of a great monastery without knowing that, years later, it would become one of the most important in the country.

On September 10, 1579, when the city of Arequipa had not even reached 40 years since its foundation, the Santa Catalina Monastery was inaugurated, an authentic jewel of colonial architecture that remains standing to this day.

The first nuns who lived here came from different parts of the country and different social classes: they were Creoles, mestizos and even daughters of curacas, the political leaders of the Inca Empire, but they all shared one main characteristic: they had the same religious devotion.

The Monastery of Santa Catalina hosted hundreds of nuns for years who lived without practically any connection to the outside until, in 1970, they decided to open it to the public so that all tourists and citizens of Arequipa could know and enjoy this mysterious place.

How to get to the Santa Catalina Monastery?

The Santa Catalina Monastery is located just a few blocks from the city’s imposing Plaza de Armas, so you can get there from any point in the historic center of Arequipa.

What is the best time to visit the Monastery of Santa Catalina?

The city of Arequipa has a fairly stable climate, with moderate rainy seasons between January and March, so the visit to the monastery can be done without inconvenience throughout the year.

Visiting hours to the Santa Catalina Monastery?

The Santa Catalina Monastery is open every day of the year with the exception of Good Friday, December 25 and January 1. Hours are Thursday through Monday from 9:00 a.m. m. at 5:00 p.m. m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 9:00 a.m. m. to 8 p. m.

The Cloisters of the Society of Jesus

The Cloisters of the Society of Jesus were built attached to the Temple, its completion date was in the year 1738.

For a short time it was the premises of the Jesuit College “Santiago”, since then the expulsion of the Jesuits was ordered in 1767.

In 1788, at the request of Bishop Chávez de la Rosa, part of the Cloisters became a hospice for orphaned children. After the Arequipa Public Charity was created, this institution took over the hospice, and for this reason reforms were introduced in the Cloisters.

The Cloisters consist of two large patios with arches and a third smaller one, the first one stands out for its Baroque style.

Currently the Cloisters are occupied by businesses related to tourist activity, such as restaurants, crafts, etc.

Located in the historic center, on the left side of the Iglesia de la Compañía, with sculpted ashlar arches, beautiful corridors; also called Pasaje Romaña, and currently occupied by commercial establishments. Located on the corner of the Plaza de Armas, between General Morán and Álvarez Thomas streets.

Arequipa might be Peru’s next great food city

Sure, Lima is delicious. But the country’s second city serves up hearty stews, llama steaks, and pisco sours. Here’s where travelers can try them.

PREHISPANIC CHUPE SHRIMP, NATIVE POTATOES, CORN, HUATACAY, EGG from Victoria Picanteria Democratica.

In 2023, when the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list of top global dining spots was announced, the city with the most entries—including the No. 1 pick—was Lima, Perú . The culinary capital is known for pisco sour bars, ceviche spots, and Chino-Latino restaurants. But if you ask Peruvians where they’d travel for a memorable meal, many would choose the nation’s second largest city, Arequipa.

This high-altitude agricultural hub, 630 miles southeast of Lima and sprawled beneath three fertile volcanoes, has a unique mestizo gastronomy merging Indigenous and Spanish influences. Its cuisine is wholly dissimilar from that of Lima. In Arequipa, instead of ceviche, causa , and lomo saltado , you find alpaca steaks, chupe de camarones (river shrimp chowder), and ocopa   (potatoes in chile sauce).

If Limeños prize innovation, Arequipeños honor tradition. In fact, UNESCO named Arequipa a Creative City for Gastronomy in 2019 (its baroque Spanish-colonial core, built from white volcanic stones, is also a UNESCO World Heritage site ).

Many cooks in this growing city of one million people prepare dishes over open fires and grind ingredients with outsized mortars and pestles. Arequipa is also known for picanterías , traditional restaurants—typically located on the edge of town—and mostly run by women who inherit them from their mothers and grandmothers.

This explains why travelers rarely find Arequipeño cuisine in Lima—much less abroad. It’s also why this intangible cultural heritage is threatened. There were about 3,200 picanterías in Arequipa in the 1800s and 2,000 in 1900. Today, there are only about 80 left.

Here’s how to experience the city’s culinary heritage—and taste what’s next.

Arequipa’s rustic taverns

Picanterías trace their origins to the 17th century, when rustic taverns called chicherías poured chicha de güiñapo , a pre-Columbian alcoholic beverage made from fermented corn. The Spanish colonial government forced the watering holes to serve small plates, akin to Spanish tapas, to prevent customers from overindulging. To keep clients thirsty, owners spiked dishes with spicy rocoto and ají panca peppers.

By the 19th century, the snacks were more popular than the booze, so the taverns became known as picanterías .   Early on, they drew (mostly male) musicians, writers, and intellectuals. Now, people of all sorts gather around their long, communal tables. “You eat in a picantería to feel Arequipeño,” says Sergio Salas, who led Arequipa’s Creative Cities project with UNESCO. “It has a soul, an essence, and a history.”

( Where to find ceviche, pisco sours, and fusion food in Lima, Peru .)

Dishes speak to Arequipa’s location on an ancient trade route between the Pacific Coast and Amazon Basin, featuring seafood from the former, fruits from the latter, and products like quinoa, corn, potatoes, and peppers from surrounding Andean valleys. The Spaniards introduced beef, garlic, onions, lima beans, and dairy, creating mestizo dishes such as rocoto   relleno (hot peppers stuffed with beef and cheese).

Arequipa sunset in front of El Misti volcano.

Alcoholic chicha de güiñapo, served in a 1.4-liter (around six cup) glass, called el caporal   (“the chief”), still accompanies picantería dishes including traditional stews specific to each day of the week. The atmosphere continues to lean rustic—guests might sit near an outdoor pen of squealing guinea pigs, a staple meat that’s usually on the menu.

Salas says UNESCO recognition has fortified the city’s restaurant industry, which supports thousands of jobs, and accounts a significant chunk of the city’s GDP. It’s also brought the women of the picanterías into the spotlight.

Why women rule Arequipa’s restaurant scene

Female restaurateurs, known as picanteras , have kept picanterías alive. “To become a picantera was not a decision but rather an imposition,” recalls Mónica Huerta, owner of Picantería La Nueva Palomino . “You were practically obliged to take over from your mother.”

Huerta resisted joining the family business at first, knowing how tough the work was on her mother and grandmother. “Society often didn’t forgive them for being in charge of their own lives, for being economically independent from men,” she says. Even now, Huerta estimates that 90 percent of her colleagues have never married.

Yet, increasingly, picanteras are seen as symbols of female empowerment and upward mobility. “You have to be strong, intelligent, and capable of commanding a big team,” says Saida Villanueva, owner of Picantería La Cau Cau II . “A picantera innately becomes a leader in her community.”

( From a Tokyo sushi temple to a Valencia food hall, here are the best spots to eat in 2024 .)

Villanueva’s four sisters are also picanteras, but she worries that younger generations won’t continue the legacy. Huerta’s concerned, too. “Our mothers and grandmothers were conferrers of culture who, through their plates, could tell the history of our region, and of our mixed race,” Huerta says. “If this culture is not continued, we will lose a great part of the story of Arequipa.”

What’s new with food in Arequipa

One member of the younger generation who has stepped up is Roger Falcón, owner of Victoria Picantería Democrática , open since 2018. Falcón is one of just five local men who’ve followed their mothers into the business. He sees Victoria as “a picantería 2.0.” It’s located on Plaza San Francisco in Arequipa’s historic center, not on the outskirts, and serves an “anthropological menu” inspired by everything from pre-Columbian cuisine to modern trends. Falcón uses dishes and ingredients pegged to specific historical dates, like a 18th-century-style pork adobo in a vinegary chicha sauce.

The food in this city has always changed with the times, and it’s now morphing again, particularly in the historic center, with Lima-based stars (like Gastón Acurio’s Chicha ) alongside picantería-inspired restaurants ( Salon at CIRQA ), and other fusion food hotpots like Indigo and Mumis , the latter of which turns an Arequipa icon, rocoto   relleno , into rocoto pepper-infused cappelletti.

At Victoria, in addition to chicha, guests sip pisco sours blended with sancayo cactus fruit, Peruvian wines, and mojitos with medicinal Andean herbs like muña . “I think we can look toward the future, and back at traditions, at the same time,” says Falcón.   “If we don’t put picanterías harmoniously in the modern context, then they’re at risk of dying out.”

Watch: MEGADETH Kicks Off 2024 South American Tour In Lima, Peru

MEGADETH played its first concert in six months at the kick-off of the band's South American tour on Saturday, April 6 at Arena 1 in Lima, Peru.

The setlist for the show was as follows:

01. The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! (live debut) 02. Dread And The Fugitive Mind 03. Devil's Island (first time since 2014) 04. Hangar 18 05. Wake Up Dead 06. In My Darkest Hour 07. Fan-filmed video can be seen below.

Finnish guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari joined MEGADETH last September after the band's longtime axeman Kiko Loureiro , announced earlier that month that he would sit out the next leg of MEGADETH 's "Crush The World" tour in order to stay home with his children back in Finland. It was later revealed that Mäntysaari would continue to play guitar for MEGADETH for the foreseeable future, with Loureiro seemingly having no plans to return.

The 37-year-old Mäntysaari was born in Tampere, Finland and began playing guitar at the age of 12. In 2004, he joined the band WINTERSUN . He has also been a member of SMACKBOUND since 2015.

MEGADETH played its first concert with Mäntysaari on September 6, 2023 at Revel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Loureiro officially joined MEGADETH in April 2015, about five months after Chris Broderick 's exit from the group.

MEGADETH 's sold-out shows at Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14, 2024 will be broadcast live on Veeps . Fans will also have the exclusive opportunity to snag MEGADETH merch, including a poster and a limited-edition tee, that will only be available for purchase on Veeps during the livestream. Veeps All Access subscribers can access the shows for free as part of their subscription. Otherwise tickets are on sale for $14.99 for each show or $24.99 for both shows on veeps.com/megadeth .

Since its inception in 1983, MEGADETH has ascended from its raw thrash metal roots to become an unstoppable force in the heavy metal world. With founder Dave Mustaine at the helm, MEGADETH 's journey has been marked by a penchant for pushing the boundaries of speed, technicality, and complexity in their music. Their groundbreaking album "Rust In Peace" , released in 1990, is frequently cited as a seminal work in the thrash metal genre. Along with the critically acclaimed "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" , it cemented MEGADETH 's place in the annals of metal history.

Over four decades, the band's discography has earned numerous certifications, including platinum and multi-platinum awards, with albums like "Countdown To Extinction" and "Youthanasia" achieving widespread critical acclaim. 2016's "Dystopia" not only marked a high point with their first Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" after twelve nominations but also set the stage for their latest triumph, "The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead!" in 2022. MEGADETH 's status as part of the "Big Four" of thrash metal underscores their trailblazing role in the genre, laying the groundwork for countless bands and musicians who have followed in their wake.

"Megadeth: Live From Buenos Aires" will be available for free for Veeps All Access subscribers, or fans can buy an individual show ticket for $14.99 or a ticket to view both shows for $24.99 at veeps.com/megadeth . The shows will air live on Veeps on April 13 and April 14 at approximately 9 p.m. Argentina Time (ART). The shows will be available on Veeps for two years after the original air dates, with a seven-day rewatch period for individual ticket purchasers.

No deben faltar alcohol o desinfectante, medicina, pastillas, vendas, curitas, toallas, frazadas, agua embotellada, alimentos enlatados, linterna y radio a pilas.
