A weekend in Copenhagen: The ultimate itinerary

Here's how to spend 48 hours in Denmark’s design-led capital, from bike rides to hostels (and lots of bakeries)

For design-lovers, fashion fiends and city breakers who like a side order of hygge with their sightseeing, Copenhagen makes a great location for a city break. Discover pavement cafés, art galleries, interior design and much more in this fun-loving city where small moments are celebrated, art and design are revered and work-life balance is (genuinely) prioritised.

Denmark’s capital is definitely on the bijou side, which is all the better for exploring by bike, just as the locals do. But spontaneous travellers, beware: one thing I've learned as a long-term resident is that booking ahead is customary here, so take note if you want to eat at a specific restaurant. From natural wine to super clubs, here is how to smash a weekend tour of Copenhagen.

A perfect weekend in Copenhagen

How to get there

How to get there

It takes just 12 minutes for the ultra-efficient metro to whisk you from Copenhagen Kastrup Airport into the heart of the city. Tickets can be bought at the red DSB ticket machines in the arrivals hall, or on your phone via the DOT app .

Trains go every ten minutes to  Hovedbanegard (Copenhagen Central Station)  during the day, and every 20 minutes in the evening. Then hop on the S train, metro or bus to where you're staying (or the nearest bar).

Where to stay

Where to stay

Copenhagen is a compact city, so don't panic:  wherever you stay, you won’t be far from the action. The biggest concern when it comes to hotels is, let's be honest, price. Copenhagen ain’t cheap.

The good news is you've got lots of options. Get a feel for the city’s canals with a room at Kanalhuset in desirable and historic Christianshavn, or book way ahead for a treat at Kaj , a floating houseboat hotel with one room. Other one-room hotels in the city include The Krane in Nordhavn and Central Hotel & Cafe in Vesterbro.

If you’re on a tight budget, there are some decent hostels to choose from. Generator is central and has a petanque court, Steel House is on the corner of the Lakes and has a pool and bikes, while Next House , down the street from the station, is popular with locals for its stone-baked pizzas.

Friday: Explore the harbour

Friday: Explore the harbour

Copenhagen is built around the harbour  – that’s where your weekend should start.

Arriving Friday afternoon, head straight for Nyhavn . This historic harbour, lined with colourful houses, is the tourist epicentre of Copenhagen – but don’t let that put you off. It’s a great place to start your city break: make like a Viking and explore it from the water.

A one-hour canal cruise with Stromma is not only great value but will also show off the big hits of the city and get you orientated. You’ll float by the Opera House , Amalienborg Palace , The Little Mermaid , The Black Diamond and along the pretty canals of Christianshavn before returning to the busy waterfront.

Explore nightlife in Nørrebro

As night falls, make a beeline for the city’s hippest area for nightlife: Nørrebro . This is a place where pop ups happen, ping pong bars are found and craft beer bars are abound; check out Bird , Dispensary and the rest of our best bars  list for when you fancy quenching your thirst.

Start in the Guldbergsgade area where Mirabelle Spiseria and Bæst serve great Italian food. Nearby you’ll also find Brus , a microbrewery with 32 beers on tap, and a natural wine bar called Pompette .

Copenhagen has a very relaxed nightlife scene – you’re more likely to find a bar that plays music until late with a little dancing at the back than a Berlin-like super club. But if you feel like dancing, you could try Rust or Sigurdsgade .

Saturday: Eat your way through Kødbyen

Saturday: Eat your way through Kødbyen

Rent some bikes – most hotels offer them or can advise on rental – and start Saturday with brunch at Harts Bageri   on Holmen. Then cycle on to Refshaleoen, a regenerating post-industrial area, past noma (taking a peek into its gardens as you go) to the Reffen street food market. It’s open from spring to early autumn; if you’re there out of season, you could drop into the cafe at Copenhagen Contemporary or Lille Bakery instead. Then visit Copenhill , a unique ski slope in the city on top of a building, where you can hike to the top and get a cracking view of the city and the wind turbines in the sea between it and Sweden.

Thirsty for more?

Spend your afternoon in Carlsberg Byen , reachable by S train (or bike, obvs). This is the home of the original Carlsberg brewery, with a new visitor centre opening in December 2023. Book into Aire Ancient Baths , deep in the vaults of the old Carlsberg buildings, for a pampering experience, or go shopping at Henrik Vibskov and snack at Gasoline Grill , one of the city’s top burger joints. In the park at the top of the hill, you’ll find Cisternerne , an unusual experiential art gallery in the city’s former water storage tanks.

Go Danish for dinner

Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District Kødbyen is a great place to start a Saturday night. Try some Danish delicacies at Paté Paté , get into local seafood at Kødbyens Fiskebar , or wash your Texas barbecue grub down with Danish beer at WarPigs .

Taking a cruise of Copenhagen’s cocktail bars is a fun way to get to know the hidden backstreets of the city. Start near Kødbyen at 1105 , hidden behind a graffitied door, before wandering into Vesterbro and discovering Duck and Cover , a lounge bar in a basement. A couple of streets away, the three-storey Lidkøb has everything including a specialist whisky bar.

Sunday: Get your culture fix

Sunday: Get your culture fix

Take the train from central station to the internationally-renowned Louisiana Museum of Modern Art , an hour north of the city, with a pastry bought on the way from Lagkagehuset bakery. It’s easy to spend a day there; a Danish brunch in the museum's excellent café is highly recommended.

Drop into Nordhavn on the way back, an architecturally stunning borough where chic streets are lined with interiors and fashion shops and a large swimming pool is marked out in the harbour. A coffee and a browse in The Audo gives you a chance to soak up the vibes.

If you’re staying one more night…

Add another museum or cultural centre to the list. DesignMuseum Danmark traces the country’s design heritage and considers its future; The National Museum plays host to Vikings and Viking treasures, and the Danish Architecture Center offers insights into what went into creating the city that you have just explored.

Copenhagen Cruise Port Guide

The city of Copenhagen is spread across two large islands, called Zealand and Amager, and connected to southern Sweden via the Öresund Bridge. When your Copenhagen cruise ship docks, you’ll arrive at a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a bustling harbor, renowned restaurants, and gorgeous historical architecture.

A stop in Copenhagen makes for a fabulous day in port while on a cruise to Scandinavia and to Northern Europe’s capitals. Spend the day admiring the city’s opulent castles and stroll along the colorful waterfront district of Nyhavn. Don’t forget to try a Danish brew and sample local eats at a food hall while you’re here

Top sights & attractions for cruises to copenhagen, rosenborg castle.

To gaze at some Renaissance splendor, spend part of your day touring Copenhagen’s Rosenborg Castle, which is home to the crown jewels and surrounded by sprawling garden scenery.

Copenhagen Opera House

The Copenhagen Opera House’s modern, futuristic design features a streamlined exterior and a roof canopy that resembles a wide-brimmed hat. Inside its sleek interior, you’ll find a marble foyer and gleaming gold-plated auditorium roof. Positioned next to the water, the opera house encompasses 41,000 square meters and stands 14 stories tall. The award-winning design was created by local architect Henning Larsen.

Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace is an impressive structure that dates back to 1733 and features Baroque Revival architecture. Its defining characteristic is the tall tower in its center. Christiansborg Palace is located on a small islet within Copenhagen’s city limits, which gives it a powerful-looking position fitting for a structure that houses the Danish Prime Minister’s Office and Supreme Court of Denmark as well as the seat of the Danish Parliament.

Little Mermaid Statue

Anyone who loves the Hans Cristian Andersen tale of a mermaid who longs to live on land (or has seen the animated movie of the same name) will love seeing Copenhagen’s iconic Little Mermaid Statue. The statue features a mermaid sculpted by Edvard Eriksen in 1913, which was placed atop a rock in the water by the Langelinie Promenade.

Top Things to Do in Copenhagen

Visit the national history museum.

Copenhagen’s National History Museum is located in a historic, 70-room castle with beautiful Renaissance-style interiors. While touring the museum, you’ll see the ornate golden paneling of the Knight’s Hall, as well as the Coronation Chapel, where some of Denmark’s past kings were anointed.

Have Fun at Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens is one of the defining landmarks of Copenhagen. In addition to gorgeous gardens worthy of a stroll, you’ll find a seasonal theme park complete with rides, games, and one of the world’s tallest chain carousels.

Explore Nyhavn

Nyhavn means “new harbor” in English, which is a fitting name for this popular Copenhagen neighborhood. Located next to a canal where you can still see old wooden ships docked, its history dates back centuries. Gorgeous 17th and 18th century houses that host a variety of eateries, many of which have pleasant outdoor seating areas, frame the picturesque canal. For more Hans Christian Andersen history, pay attention to the house numbers of 18, 20, and 67, since Andersen lived in each one.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Copenhagen Cruise Port

When spending a day in the Copenhagen cruise port, you’ll likely want to try some local cuisine, and one of the best places to do so is Torvehallerne. Located right by Nørreport Station, Torvehallerne is a bustling food hall that serves a wide variety of local specialties. It’s a great way to try small bites of many different types of Danish cuisine. You’ll also find groceries and fresh produce sold here. For street food vendors, visit Refshaleøen at Reffen where most of them congregate. It’s a bit of a trek to get to from the cruise port, but the delicious food at great prices makes it worth the journey.

Copenhagen has a thriving beer scene. Expect to pay around 30 kr for a large beer and more at upscale places. Carlsberg and Tuborg are two beer brands you’ll typically find on tap, both of which are Danish Pilsner styles of beer. It’s legal to drink beer in public in Copenhagen, and a laidback way to enjoy one is by buying a bottle and drinking it in a park. To experience the local bar scene, head to Nyhavn. You’ll also find many bars and clubs in Sankt Hans Torv and Blågårds Plads.

Culture & History of the Copenhagen Cruise Port

In the 11th century, the first settlement was built on the shores of Copenhagen. Over the next few centuries it grew in prominence, particularly after Bishop Absalon came to Copenhagen and led the city as one of its foremost politicians and church father in the 12th century. He was also the closest advisor to King Valdemar I of Denmark. In the 13th century, a stone wall was built around the city, which helped protect Copenhagen from several attacks over the coming centuries. The city grew significantly under the rule of Christian IV of Denmark in the early 1600s and became the principal fortification and naval port of the country.

Today, the three things that most define culture in Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark is simplicity, politeness, and equality. Bragging is considered rude, and high incomes are not to be coveted. Instead, living a life of simple pleasures is desired. Hygge is the word given to the idea of finding moments of coziness and contentment, particularly through relaxing and eating together with friends.

The local economy is thriving and healthy with a strong tourism sector, which has helped to make it one of Europe’s fastest growing metropolitan destinations. Women and men are seen as equals in Denmark, and the maternity leave offered is one of the best in the world at 10 months.

The country is run by a constitutional monarchy with the Queen as the Head of the State. In return for the high taxes the citizens pay, the government of Denmark provides health care and many other social services.

Copenhagen Port Facilities & Location

Copenhagen’s port is called Copenhagen Malmö Port, and it has two main cruise piers. Depending on your ship, you may stop at Langelinie Pier, which is located about 1.5 miles from the city center, or in Ocean Quay, which is the harbor’s newest terminal located in Nordhavn that can accommodate larger cruise ships. Those on cruises to Copenhagen, Denmark that pull into port in Langelinie Pier will find a busy port center with several shops and cafes as well as an information center, money exchange offices, and ATMs. From Langelinie, you can easily walk to the city center. Those who have a Copenhagen cruise port of call at Ocean Quay won’t be able to walk to the city center, but there are tour bus companies and taxis lined up outside the pier. There is also a third cruise pier at Nordre Toldbod near the Little Mermaid Statue, though it's not as commonly used by cruise ships.

Transportation in Copenhagen

The easiest way to get around via public transportation in Copenhagen is by using the commuter rail or metro system. Both of these offer fast, regular service all around the city. There are a variety of ticket options depending on your needs, including single-use tickets and 24-hour tickets that cover multiple zones. Walking is also a great way to get around the city, since the main sights are located right within the city center or just a short distance outside it.

For a more customized service, hiring a taxi is an easy way to go since there are more than 1,700 government-licensed taxis that service the Copenhagen area, and many of the drivers speak English. Most taxis will accept credit cards, but double check before entering the cab. Expect an increase in fare prices during the evening hours or if visiting on a holiday.

If you love traveling via water, then you’ll have a fun time taking the waterbus around, which connects from Langelinie Pier to the city center. There is also a bus (#26) that connects to the city center and the pier multiple times every hour. From Ocean Quay, a hop-on, hop-off bus service is available to get into the city.

Shopping Near the Copenhagen Cruise Port

Strøget, one of the largest pedestrian malls in the world, offers both high street and luxury brand shopping and is a must-visit for fashionistas on a cruise to Copenhagen. For locally owned boutiques and clothing with a hip and eclectic flare, try the side streets off Strøget located in the Old City.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Denmark uses the krone currency. Prices here tend to be higher than in other European destinations. To stay on budget, book a shore excursion in advance and plan to eat your meals on the ship. Most banks in the city offer currency exchange, and you’ll find ATMs outside local banks. You can also swap your cash for kroners at one of the currency exchange offices located throughout the city, which are often found in post offices, train stations, and by Tivoli Gardens.

In general, tipping is not customary in Copenhagen, though it is common for a service charge to come included on bills for restaurants and taxis. Any tip amount on top of that is not expected, but it will be appreciated if you wish to tip more for stellar service.

Despite a few downsides, a Copenhagen cruise is still a worthwhile and enjoyable experience. While large crowds can be a concern, careful selection of the right cruise and planning ahead can help mitigate this issue. Although paying for a guided boat tour may not suit everyone’s budget, the city offers a range of free and affordable activities that can balance out the cost of a cruise. Ultimately, the unique perspective of Copenhagen’s attractions from the water and the calm and clean waterways can make a cruise a memorable and enjoyable way to explore the city.

In conclusion, Copenhagen cruises and boat tours are a must-do activity for any visitor to the capital of Denmark.

Cruises From Copenhagen

Take a cruise from Copenhagen to find fairytale magic mixed with modern ingenuity. This European capital enchants with patinaed spires, Renaissance castles, and nods to children’s author Hans Christian Anderson, who called the city home for many years. But while Copenhagen has a lot of historic charm, it’s well-ahead when it comes to the environment. More than half of its well-dressed residents zip to work on bikes in sectioned-off bike paths. The city also started mandatory green roofs—sod-covered rooftops that reduce urban temperatures and stormwater system strain. One of the top things to do in Copenhagen is eat—chefs around the world draw inspiration from Noma, regarded as a top restaurant in the world. It is also the hardest to get into—attempt to make a reservation months ahead of your cruise to Denmark.

Housed in the old Prince’s Palace, the National Museum’s galleries span the Great Hall and former sleeping quarters of Danish royalty. Local Cuisine

Copenhagen has the most Michelin-starred restaurants of any Scandinavian city. Noma is consistently named 'Best Restaurant in the World' for its New Nordic cuisine. But if you’re hungry for a quick lunch, try a herring smørrebrød sandwich and a dozen Limfjord oysters. Savour Danish cheese, coffee and pastries at Torvehallerne market – or sip on an ice-cold pint of Carlsberg pilsner.

Hit the famous shopping strip of Strøget, one of the longest pedestrian-friendly streets in Europe, for international brands and kitschy collectibles. Copenhagen is perhaps best-known for its Danish-designed glass and ceramic home goods. Many vendors sell secondhand porcelain and silver pieces in street markets, but be prepared to bargain.

Updated: 19th November 2023

With its canal-crossed districts, countless cultural attractions, world-class museums, and abundance of contemporary architecture, Copenhagen has cemented its reputation as one of Europe’s chicest city breaks. But with so many choices of things to do, see and experience, how should you spend your weekend in Copenhagen?

Having just returned from my third visit to the city, I’ve got some thoughts, and they might not align with all the ‘best things to do in Copenhagen’ lists — Tivoli and the Little Mermaid, for example, are not really worth your time, in my opinion. And given how pricey some of the city’s attractions are (here are some budget tips for Copenhagen ), you’ll want to ensure you’re getting the most out of your two days in Copenhagen.

With that in mind, here’s how I would propose spending a weekend in Copenhagen, planned out as a two-day itinerary. If you’re planning to enjoy a long weekend in the city, you’ll also find some suggestions for more things to do in Copenhagen and nearby day trips to extend your visit.

No weekend visit to Copenhagen is complete without strolling along iconic Nyhavn

In this article...

Things to do in Copenhagen: Your Weekend Guide

Arrival: friday night .

My suggestions for this weekend in Copenhagen itinerary are based on a Friday evening arrival and late Sunday departure and, therefore, align with the various attractions’ opening hours; however, it’s always best to check closing times or which days attractions might be shuttered — many museums are closed on Mondays.

Check-in: Where to stay in Copenhagen

Once you’ve landed and taken the fast and affordable train into the city, dump your bags at your hotel and head straight out. If you’re still deciding where to stay in Copenhagen, here are a few suggestions.

A pod bed at Next House

Affordable and atmospheric – Next House

On my most recent visit to Copenhagen, I stayed at Next House, one of many ‘new generation’ hotel-level-hostels that are cropping up across the city. The place is huge, meaning that it’s suitable for all types of travellers: families, couples, or backpackers looking for an affordable stay. This is also evident in the room choices, as they have dorms (each with its own bathroom), bookable by bunk (pod style for a bit more privacy) or entirely if you want the room for private use. There are also private double rooms at very fair prices for Copenhagen. The rooftop terrace has a seasonal bar, there’s a kitchen if you want to go self-catering, and a couple of bars that (unlike most in the city) won’t break the bank.

But best of all, they have heaps of other spaces you can utilise: a restaurant which serves a decent buffet breakfast or evening pizza buffet, a football and gym area, and plenty of lounge space to relax. If you’re a solo traveller, you can join one of the dinners specifically aimed at solos to meet others or join one of their guided tours. It might have those important hostel facilities, but overall, it feels much more like an atmospheric hotel.

The upmarket Nimb Hotel inside Tivoli Gardens is one of the city's most unusual sights

Iconic splurge – Nimb Hotel

While I would never consider coughing up the crazy prices for even a night at Nimes, those seeking an iconic Copenhagen experience and who have money to spare may want to splurge and sleep at the fairytale-looking Nimb Hotel located inside Tivoli Gardens. It’s got all the luxury you’d expect, with a spa, rooftop pools and chic rooms, but is it worth the price? I’ll let you decide.

Boutique pick – Bryggen Guldsmeden

Billed as an ‘Urban Eco Resort’, Bryggen Guldsmeden is not what you’d expect to find in Copenhagen’s former industrial harbour. There’s a gorgeous pool and courtyard, airy and trendy rooms, and plenty of colourful statements around this Bali-influenced boutique stay, especially ideal for a summer weekend visit to Copenhagen.

Copenhagen's Nyhavn isn't the only canal to enjoy a cocktail

Friday night: Orientation walk and dinner

Start your Copenhagen itinerary with a stroll down Strøget, the city’s main pedestrian thoroughfare to historic Nyhavn. This 17th-century colourful canal is at the heart of the city, and although touristy, you might want to grab a cocktail on one of the terraces here. However, you get the best views from the other side, and prices here are hiked, so to save some Krone, just enjoy the photo opportunities.

For dinner, I’d suggest continuing to the end of Nyhavn (where it joins the main canal, Hønsebroløbet) and crossing the Inderhavnsbroen bridge to the other side. There are two fantastic street food markets ideal for a quick and easy post-flight meal: Reffen (which is my favourite) and slightly more touristy Broens Gadekøkken . However, if you’re visiting in winter, they will be closed — Broens is open for its ice rink instead — so then I’d recommend grabbing a bite at nearby LaLaLa for a warmer but still delicious alternative.

Frederik's Church behind Amalienborg Palace

What to do in Copenhagen on day one (Saturday)

After eating breakfast at your hotel or grabbing a Kanelsnegle (cinnamon bun) on the go, start early to make the most of your weekend in Copenhagen.

When working out how to make the most of your Copenhagen itinerary and budget, you have two decisions. Firstly, is it worth getting the Copenhagen Card? This depends on how many attractions you plan to visit because they can quickly add up. Still, the card is only worthwhile if you’re planning to see a few things, and the website has a helpful calculator to determine how beneficial the savings will be.

Secondly, deciding how you want to get around the city. While many people recommend hiring a bike ‘like the locals do,’ I honestly believe it’s nicer to explore Copenhagen on foot, as you save cash, don’t need to faff parking, and can go slower, which isn’t always easy on a bike as locals are cycling from A to B in the dedicated lanes, not taking a scenic sightseeing tour. If you’ve opted to get the Copenhagen Card, you’ll have public transport included anyway.

Catch an evening performance at The Royal Danish Theatre

Morning: Museums and modern art

If you’ve only got two days in Copenhagen, you need to be selective about which museums to visit, as the city has an impressive list of over fifty art galleries and museums to choose from, and you don’t want to spend your whole weekend inside. Head to one of the museums early on your first day (most open at 10 am) to try and get in before they get too busy.

If you’re keen to learn more about the history and culture of Copenhagen and Denmark, opt to visit the National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet) or the Museum of Copenhagen. However, I believe the best collections in Copenhagen are in the art museums, so I’d personally recommend choosing one of these. The NY Carlsberg Glyptotek will delight people with a penchant for sculptures. Across town, the Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK), the National Gallery of Denmark, has the best collection of Danish, Nordic and international masters and could keep you entertained for hours.

Another option is to take the train to the out-of-town Louisiana Museum of Modern Art , which is regarded as one of the best modern art museums in the world, both for its collection and the architecture which sits alongside the Øresund Sound. But, as impressive as it is, if you only have two days in Copenhagen, this side trip will eat into your day.

Copenhagen is easily explored on foot, you don't even need a bike

Lunch: Sample some smørrebrøds

Most of the major museums in Copenhagen have restaurants or cafes — the one at the SMK has a decent menu — and they often are competitively priced (for Copenhagen) compared to other options. That said, lunch is when you often find the best deals in Copenhagen, with fixed-price menus or all-you-can-eat buffets easier to come by, RizRaz being a good option for vegetarians. If you don’t want anything too heavy, however, save some time and have a quick and easy smørrebrød , the Danish-style open sandwiches served on rye bread and one of the many dishes that make Copenhagen one of the best food cities in Europe . Good options near the museums include Kanal-Caféen, close to the NY Carlsberg Glyptotek (Lillian’s is also highly recommended, but closed on weekends), or Under Uret near the SMK.

Afternoon: Canals, castles and ‘cruises’

Fueled up and ready to continue, it’s time to enjoy the afternoon light on a walk and perhaps even a boat ride along some of Copenhagen’s best canal-hugging sights.

Start at Frederiksholms Kanal, which encircles Slotsholmen Island. Cross over one of the bridges and arrive at Christiansborg Palace. This is one of a few grand palaces you can visit in Copenhagen, so if you fancy it, head inside to see grand halls and art-adorned walls. However, I’d say to just walk through the courtyard, admire the exterior, and visit one of the older palaces, Amalienborg or Rosenborg, tomorrow instead.

A mosaic in the Stærekassen passage in Copenhagen

On the other side of Frederiksholms Kanal, loop around the Det Kongelige Teater to admire its impressive facade (and perhaps query if any tickets are remaining for tonight’s performance) before heading under the Stærekassen passage around the back; there is a wonderful mosaic ceiling hidden underneath. From here, you’ve returned to Nyhavn, allowing the chance to admire the colourful old buildings in the daylight.

At the end of Nyhavn, turn left and follow the water outside the much more modern Playhouse Theatre and admire the equally contemporary Opera House across the canal. A few moments away, you’ll see some of Copenhagen’s most impressive sights, the Amalienborg Castle and, just behind it, the Frederik’s Church dome soaring.

Copenhagen

The Amalienborg is still the royal family’s official residence, and from the inner circular courtyard, you can see the four different palaces which form the complex. Regarded as one of the best things to do in Copenhagen, you can buy a ticket to enter and tour the Great Hall and see some of the Danish crown jewels. After the visit, continue in the same direction to Kastellet, a well-preserved fortress citadel. You can walk around the verdant bastions on either side of the moat, spot a rather photogenic windmill, and even walk inside the courtyard (open until 8 pm). Right by here is one of the most underwhelming famous attractions in the world, The Little Mermaid , so you might as well make your way through any crowds to have a look at this relatively small bronze statue.

To finish today’s Copenhagen itinerary, you could take the Havnebussen (Harbour Bus) back down the canal to see the same route from a different perspective. Being part of the public transport system, it’s a much cheaper alternative to some of the other canal cruises, but be aware the boats can get full, so you may need to wait. Board at the Nordre Toldbod stop (the last boat leaves around 8:20 pm) near the Kastellet and stay onboard until Bryggebroen. On arrival, you’re about a 15-20 minute walk across the bridge from the Meatpacking District, a great place to eat dinner.

St Alban's Church sits alongside across the moat from Kastellet

Dinner & Drinks: The Meatpacking District (Kødbyen)

Copenhagen’s Kødbyen, also known as the Meatpacking District due to its former purpose, is one of the many parts of the city that have undergone a creative transformation. Now, it’s one of Copenhagen’s most trendy places, packed with excellent restaurants and craft beer breweries. You can choose from pretty much any cuisine you want here, but Fiskebaren is a solid, if pricey, pick if you fancy some first-class seafood. After eating, you can venture to one of the brew pubs for some equally expensive pints (this is Copenhagen, after all) or choose one of the cocktail bars instead.

What to do in Copenhagen on day two (Sunday)

If you’re checking out today, stash your bags after breakfast (if you’re in an Airbnb rather than a hotel, you can store them at the central station or search on a luggage storage travel app like Bounce) and make an early-ish start if you want to witness the changing of the guard ceremony.

Rosenborg Castle is one of the city's more important historical landmarks

Morning: Palaces and parks

If you didn’t visit any of the palaces yesterday, then start today’s Copenhagen itinerary at Kongens Have (The King’s Garden/Rosenborg Garden). The oldest royal gardens in the country, this well-manicured space opens at 7 am, meaning you can have a walk around before entering the adjacent Rosenberg Palace when visiting commences at 10 am. The reason I suggest getting in early is the changing of the guard ceremony commences at 11:30 am. Dating back to the 17th century, Christian IV’s castle is impressive. Inside, you’ll have the chance to see crown jewels, opulent halls and bedrooms and learn more about the Danish monarchy.

An hour and a half should be a good amount of time to complete (a slightly rushed tour), but this will mean you can be outside when the changing of the guard procession starts. The Den Kongelige Livgarde (Royal Guard) depart their barracks at Rosenborg Castle and walk the streets to Amalienborg. As such, you can follow this impressive procession before seeing the grand finale around midday in Amalienborg’s open courtyard. If the group is accompanied by a band and the flag is hoisted, it means the King is at home.

Christiana, Copenhagen

Afternoon: Christiana and contemporary architecture

After grabbing lunch at one of the nearby cafes, finish up your weekend in Copenhagen by seeing a very different side of the city in Freetown Christiania, a commune across the river which was established in a former military barracks by squatters in the 70s. However, in 2012, a formal agreement was made, leading to the residents purchasing the area.

Both times I’ve visited, I’ve had no problems inside Christiania and found it very safe, but you should be aware that this isn’t just another neighbourhood of the city; it operates under its own rules. Reportedly, in recent years, there have been more problems and crime reported around the area, which is why the residents now are much stricter on enforcing their rules for visitors, such as no photography. If you’re not that comfortable visiting alone (not advisable after dark) but still want to see inside this creative and free-spirtied community, locals offer guided tours on the weekend at 15:00 — hence suggesting it as an afternoon activity. No reservation is needed; just be sure to bring the tour fee (check on this website ) in cash.

En route there or back, you might also want to visit some of Copenhagen’s more contemporary contrasting architecture by calling in at the Opera House or Royal Library.

Evening: Departure or dinner

If you’re not heading back to the airport to take your flight, be aware that many restaurants close on Sunday evenings, so you might want to plan and book ahead.

Contemporary architecture, such as the Opera House, Library and Playhouse Theatre, line the Hønsebroløbet canal

Things to do in Copenhagen with a third day (and day trip ideas)

If you’re planning to spend a long weekend in Copenhagen (do check opening hours, as some museums close on Mondays, making Friday a better extension) or you want to swap out one of the activities above, here are a few other ideas of things to do in Copenhagen.

Visit more museums or palaces

Copenhagen has so many excellent museums and numerous palaces to visit that if you’ve invested in the Copenhagen Card, then you should get the most out of it by including a few more during a long weekend trip. As well as those mentioned on the first day of this Copenhagen itinerary, the Designmuseum, Danish Architecture Centre, and The Museum of Danish Resistance are worth a visit. For galleries and art-focused collections, consider the sculptures of Thorvaldsens and the contrast between contemporary art and grand old-world architecture at Kunsthal Charlottenborg. I’ve written more in-depth about the best museums in Copenhagen here .

Tivoli Gardens are a 'must-visit' in Copenhagen, but only if the park appeals

Tivoli Gardens

One of Copenhagen’s most famous attractions is the historic Tivoli Gardens , a theme park amongst pretty gardens. With theatre shows, dining options (the Tivoli Food Court is actually free and open to all), various imported architecture styles, and some entertaining rides, it could be a good call. Personally, I think it’s a bit overpriced and not really a ‘must visit’ unless you have a specific interest in the park, though special seasonal events can make it more worthwhile.

The Carlsberg Experience

You might have noticed a few museums and sights in Copenhagen come with the name Carlsberg, and it’s because the brewery was founded here in Valby, Copenhagen. The Carlsberg Experience is located in the original brewery and will re-open in December 2023 after some renovation work. For those interested in one of the world’s most famous beers, you can tour interactive experiences on a tour of the historical cellars or just enjoy a tasting.

Go to the Rundetaarn (Round Tower)

Getting to the top of the Rundetaarn involves circling a long ramp, but you’ll get some pretty impressive views from this nearly 400-year-old landmark. Temporary exhibitions are held in some of the halls.

Helsingborg Denmark

Combine the Louisiana Museum with Helsingor

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, which is around 30 minutes from Copenhagen by train, then you could ride another 20 minutes north to the historic city of Helsingør, where a pretty cobbled street, Old Town and the mighty Kronborg Castle await. Ferries also regularly cross to Sweden from here.

Cross the bridge to Malmo in Sweden

The impressive, nearly 16-kilometre Øresund Bridge links Copenhagen with Malmö in Sweden, making it one of the easiest day trips from Copenhagen. Trains are fairly regular, as are (usually) cheaper FlixBuses .

Where to travel after Copenhagen

Other further afield spots worth visiting in Denmark include Ribe, the oldest town in the country, second-city Aarhus, or heading out to one of the smaller islands and archipelagos. Alternatively, continue on a grand tour of the Nordic capitals by spending a few days in Stockholm or visiting Oslo or Helsinki . For a grand adventure, you could take the two-day ferry to the pretty Faroe Islands , a self-governing nation within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Copenhagen Weekend Travel FAQs

If you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, here are a few travel tips and things you should know about what to pack, alternative accommodation and keeping safe.

What should I pack for a weekend in Copenhagen?

– Copenhagen is known for its unpredictable weather so make sure you pack for every occasion. It’s a good idea to pack enough clothes to layer up, especially in the winter (December to March) and autumn months (September to November). Autumn is the rainy time of year in Copenhagen so travel prepared with a fold-up umbrella, weatherproof coat/boots and thick clothes for layering. Refer to this  backpacking packing essentials  for more pointers. – Summer (June to August) is way more stable so it’s safe to wear clothes more suitable for the hot weather. With long and mostly warm days, be prepared with  sunglasses , a  reusable water bottle  and sunscreen. However, it’s still a good idea to have an umbrella with you! If you’re planning on cycling and walking most of the time, be sure to pack an across-body bag and good walking shoes/boots.

Can I get an apartment in Copenhagen for the weekend?

If you’re looking for something other than a hotel or hostel for your 2 days in Copenhagen, the city has some excellent apartments. You can find anything from budget accommodation to serviced apartments across the city! One of our favourites is Charlottehaven in Østerbro. This serviced apartment comes with a gym, cafe and pool as well as access to a 24-hour front desk. Feel right at home with the use of a washing machine and tumble drier as well! There are also other options for staying in an apartment including house-sitting for free accommodation or Airbnb, which has a fantastic array of options!

Is Copenhagen safe for a weekend trip?

If you’re concerned about  safety while touring  Copenhagen, you’ll be happy to know that Copenhagen is considered one of the  safest capital cities in the world!  However, there is still the occurrence of petty crime so it’s best to keep an eye on your valuables and don’t carry wads of cash around with you. It’s generally safe to walk alone, but you will need to avoid areas of Nørrebro at night as there have been reports of more serious crime there, specifically at night. It’s important to be vigilant when travelling through busier areas including Central Station as it is more prone to pickpockets. It is very likely that you will be walking or cycling a fair amount so be aware of your surroundings, abide by the laws and stay safe on the roads. Happy travels!

Don’t Forget Your Copenhagen Travel Insurance

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

A Total Trip: What I spent on an expensive weekend in Copenhagen

Chamidae Ford

Apr 25, 2024 • 9 min read

weekend cruise copenhagen

Copenhagen is an expensive city to visit © Daniel Rasmussen

In our A Total Trip series, writers document what they spent on a recent getaway. In this edition, Chamidae Ford shows us how far her money went on a long weekend in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I recently spent a sunny weekend in  Copenhagen – a city known for its stunning architecture, signature design and burgeoning food scene – with my friend and coworker Ann Douglas . When planning this trip, I knew I’d only be there for a few days, and I also knew I wanted to taste delicious food and shop for a few souvenirs (or more than a few).

As someone who lives in New York , I must acknowledge that my sense of what is deemed overpriced and what is "normal" is a bit skewed. Still, I will bare my spending soul if only to offer a grasp on what a weekend in this city may cost if you enjoy yourself rather than convert prices on a currency app.

A receipt with Chamidae's pre-trip spending figure

Pre-trip spending

A goal for me was to do as little pre-trip spending as possible. Since I was already in Dublin for work, I took a short flight costing 679kr to Copenhagen.

For the hotel, I wanted a place that felt young and prioritized design, so it truly felt like we were in Copenhagen. I also looked for something central to avoid long commute times when visiting the main sites. We stayed at 25 Hours Hotel in Indre By , a pricier option but in a great location, and we split the cost of the room. For three nights, our stay was 5408kr, which means my portion was 2704kr, which I paid for with credit card points I had been saving.

Pre-trip spending: 697kr

L-R: The writer and her friend posing for photos with their cocktails; their dinner plates

On-the-ground spending

Airport transfer: We landed in Copenhagen around 4:30pm, and we discovered that one of Copenhagen's finest perks is how straightforward it is to get from the airport to the city! Doing the same in London, Paris, or New York is a pricey, timely and exhausting feat; this was cheap (30kr) and fast. I got from the airport to my hotel in roughly 20 minutes.

Activities: With a dinner reservation for 8pm (you must make dinner reservations in advance; Copenhagen is not the place for walk-ins), we spent a few hours taking in the early evening, the winding streets, and noting places we would like to visit the next day.

Apertivo: We stopped at Little Green Door , a cocktail bar along the canal, for a pre-dinner drink. We each enjoyed a single shot, gin and tonic for a whopping 131kr (262kr for both). After swiping my card, this was the moment I knew my weekend was going to be more expensive than I had anticipated.

Dinner: In the evening, we dined at the intimate yet bustling  Lilo Vinoria , a chic wine bar with Italian-inspired food and an extensive drink menu. I am unsure if it was because I had only consumed a single croissant that day due to travel or because I was coming off a week of pub food in Dublin, but this meal felt like everything I had ever needed.

We split the burrata featuring a yuzu marinade, walnuts and jalapeños and shared the pork and veal rosemary polpettes. Ann Douglas and I each enjoyed a plate of the freshest, brightest, most rejuvenating pea and asparagus risotto. Throughout the meal, I nursed a very dry martini, which was fine but made me long for the Dirty Martini at Long Island Bar in Brooklyn.  My share of the cost for that meal was 471.85kr .

Total: 632.85kr

L-R: Avocado, bacon and toast; up-close shot of a hotdog; a collection of colorful glassware; a boat tour of Copenhagen

Breakfast: On this beautiful Saturday, the sun was shining, and we were on the hunt for a full breakfast – I needed more than a croissant to sustain me today. We stumbled across Coffee Room , where I had a scrambled eggs with chives, crispy bacon, toast, avocado, freshly squeezed orange juice and an Americano (237kr) .

Activities: First and foremost, I wanted to shop. I had heard about the city's vintage stores and seen the incredibly stylish locals, and I knew I needed to come home with a few pieces from my travels.

We went to Mads Nørgaard , a Copenhagen brand that makes iconic striped shirts that are so comfy. I bought the pink-on-pink, striped long-sleeve, which I would end up wearing the very next day (299kr) . From there, we browsed a few vintage shops, but the real winner was O-S-V Second Hand , where I got a very chic, brown boatneck top sprinkled with polka dots and a white midi length skirt ( 599kr for both).

We stopped by a stunning glass shop called Studio Arhoj , a suggestion courtesy of Lonely Planet writer Verona Farrell in her story, Copenhagen in 5 Shops . I walked away with a handful of gifts for friends and a piece for myself (599kr) .

Having sufficiently spent a lot of my money, we decided to start sightseeing. We chose to purchase the Copenhagen Card  (CPH Card), which includes all public transit and entrance to most of the city’s main sites. We strategically bought it in the afternoon of day two to maximize its use. For 48 hours, the card costs €100 (746kr) . Included in the card was a boat tour through the canals. We cruised through the city, learning some of its history while enjoying the sunny day. The hour-long tour even gave us a glimpse of the famous Little Mermaid statue .

Lunch: For lunch, we visited a hot dog stand, where I got a spicy dog covered in onions, relish, ketchup, mustard and a herby aioli. Delish! (45kr) .

Activities: After our quick bite, we headed to the Copenhagen Design Museum (included in the CPH Card), featuring an exhibit on local supermarket chain  Irma . It delved into the brand's design evolution, showcasing how it had changed since its inception in 1886. I decided to skip the gift shop. My credit card was still tired from the morning.

Dinner: That evening, we took the bus (CPH Card) to dinner, where we enjoyed a tasting menu at Mirabelle Spisería , a moody Italian restaurant in inner Nørrebro. The food was delicious but not necessarily mind-blowing. We split a crispy arancini, flatbread doused in olive oil and mozzarella, burrata with pistachios and capers. We also enjoyed a salad of cod and citrus, which I loved, plus cacio e pepe  (cheese and pepper pasta) and brown butter sage ravioli. I particularly enjoyed the delicious glasses of Nero wine.

My share of the dinner bill came to 536kr .

Total: 3061kr (oof!)

L-R: Chamidae poses in Louisianna; up-close shot of cheeseburger; seafood dinner; Chamidae poses in her new top

Breakfast: We stopped by Lagkagehuse , where I had a kanelsnegl  (cinnamon roll) and an Americano (90kr) .

Activities: Today we were leaving the city behind to visit the  Lousiana Museum of Modern Art (CPH Card) – this was the activity everyone had recommended, and I must admit they were right. It's an hour-long train ride outside the city, which is a gentle way to ease into the day and a great opportunity to see a bit of Danish countryside. We followed signs from the station that led us on the 10-minute walk to the museum, and arrived at opening time of 11am.

We spent two hours exploring the museum, which included a wide range of exhibits, from Dominican-American artist Firelei Báez and her captivating multimedia pieces that explore the black diaspora and folk tales to the French artist, Chaïm Soutine's expressionist pieces that span his lifetime. The museum itself is stunning, with glass walls and a sculpture park in the center. Perched on a hill overlooking the water, it is a captivating location that remains the highlight of my trip. I purchased a Báez print to take home with me (350kr) .

Lunch: Back in the city, we immediately went looking for a Gasoline Grill for lunch. Famous for its excellent burgers (and long lines), we decided to stick it out as everyone said it is the best.

The classic cheeseburger (100kr) was truly unforgettable. The bun is toasted to perfection, so each bite has a crunch; the meat, which is never frozen, is seasoned throughout the process. Ann Douglas and I ate, standing against a brick fence in silence, completely focused on the experience. For the quality, it felt like a steal (NYC loves to charge $28 for a burger) and totally worth the wait.

Activities: After lunch, we explored the Rosenborg Castle (CPH Card), catching a glimpse of the crown jewels, grand halls and many stylish rooms. It is no Versailles , but it is an interesting historic space in the city's center. The park grounds surrounding the castle are stunning, and catching the tulips in bloom was exciting.

Dinner: For our final evening, we opted for Mediterranean food and ventured over to Vesterbro for a meal at Delphine . It was a bit of an Instagrammy spot, but the food was great, and the atmosphere was fun.

The tzatziki and flatbread, to start, was refreshing and light. The lamb was juicy and delicious, the prawns a bit small but well seasoned, the french fries crispy, which I prefer, but the star to me was a watermelon feta salad, which had mint, perfectly firm chunks of green tomato, onion, olives and a dash of vinegar. Truly perfect.

For my share of the meal, I spent 490kr .

Total: 1030kr

L-R: Broches from Rosenborg Castle, a flower market and Chamidae posing for a photo in the park

Breakfast: For our final morning, we stopped by Holms Bager (63kr) for coffee and a pastry before returning to a couple of shops where we wanted to grab some items we had been thinking about (334kr), another one of those Mads shirts and more items from the Studio Arhoj  glass shop. Mostly, we savored our final hours and enjoyed the early morning quietness of the city.

Airport transport: We hopped on the train back to the airport and our CPH card, in its final hours, still covered our fare.

Lunch: In the airport before the 8.5-hour flight, I stopped by Joe & the Juice for an underwhelming sandwich (85kr) , but it is airport food; what more can you expect?

Total: 482kr

Final tally receipt

The final tally: 5902.85kr

Overall, it was an expensive weekend, but more due to my own desire to shop and indulge in lavish dinners. Only having alcohol with dinner ended up saving me a lot of money in the long run, as most days, I only had one drink.

The Copenhagen Card is a hack when you are visiting places nonstop, but I don't think we fully maximized its bang for its buck due to doing more wandering and shopping than overall sightseeing.

Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.

A Taste of Scandinavia

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.

The itinerary was great with lots of time built in for solo exploration. I liked having an orientation to the towns before heading out on my own. Michael had a lot of knowledge to share about the places we saw. He is s great story teller making everything interesting. His personality is perfect for the job. He kept everyone on time in a very respectful manner which was much appreciated. I also enjoyed the local guides who were also a wealth of knowledge. The optional excursions were Good value for the most part. Our driver was awesome. Despite the challenging terrain I felt very safe and comfortable on the coach. He was always very pleasant.

Accommodations in Copenhagen and Stockholm were too difficult to get to and from using public transportation. Would drop visit to Vemork...story is interesting but the actual sight was disappointing. Also visit to Lillehammer ski jump was just ok; could also drop that from the tour. Would have liked more time in Oslo and Stockholm. Ali was a fabulous guide and all bus drivers were excellent drivers.

ScanBaltic Tour

I am pleased with the whole tour's itineraries, accommodation, meals, transport and the guides. However, in the later part of the tour, from Tallinn to Warsaw, I was mixed with the Spanish speaking group and has been given an exclusive guide (Bijo). However, in the bus, while the Spanish speaking guide was explaining about the places, Bijo did his best to explain that in English but it's just so messed up due to the fact that 99% of the bus were talking in Spanish & only me & Bijo in English, I could not understand most of the time due to this & also we have been told to keep quiet as the Spanish guide is explaining. This is insane and should not be mixed with the Spanish group. Other than this, I would say that the tour overall is great.

Biggest problem that we had was a guide because of her heavy Spanish accent, it was hard to understand her sometimes. Also, the information that she presented to us was not sufficient or interesting. She was repetitive, searching for words. Accommodations were good except the last hotel in Stockholm. It was outside of the city, shabby, old . I would use a different tour company next time.

Grand Scandinavia (Classic, 20 Days) Tour

Grand Scandinavia (Classic, 20 Days)

An excellent and enjoyable tour with so much amazing scenery. Greg's knowledge, enthusiasm, commitment to us and his warm personality added so much to our experience. A special mention to our driver Zoltan whose skill and friendly nature made us all feel very safe and relaxed. Greg and Zoltan worked so well together. Would highly recommend the tour, Greg and Zoltan

Jewels of Scandinavia End Tallinn Tour

Jewels of Scandinavia End Tallinn

Overall the tour was well organised and covered most of the countries I wanted to see in Scandinavia. A good general overview with guide commentary (Jose and Rocea plus local guides in Stockholm and Tallinn) in two or three languages catering for most of the participants which worked well. However there was one suggestion I would make. On our arrival in Helsinki, we were told we could not check into our hotel until 3pm. The tour group were thus taken to Soumilina Island. The island stop was 4 hours which for me was way too long and took me away from being able to see more of Helsinki. I would suggest 2 hours is sufficient time and then the group taken to hotel for more free time to be spent in Helsinki.

we enjoyed the tour very much. . . our guide and driver (Jose and Mario) are both great . . and so were the local guides. ...would recommend this tour to others.

What people love about Europe Tours from Copenhagen

My trip was well organized. The Tour Leader Amanda and the Driver Raffie were both excellent. The cities, sites, people, and events experienced were a joy.
I was worried about the culturally mixed tour clients due to some negative reviews from previous clients. But I enjoyed the experiences of mixing with participants from Mexico and the Philippines. Yes sometimes bilingual guides’ presentations were not clear, and I had to ask for clarifications. Hotels were better than I had expected from the reviews; except in one-hotel the lightening was so bd
It was excellent tour

Browse two radical, modernistic buildings with an architectural historian that will reveal little known facts about their extraordinary designs. The Black Diamond extension to the Royal Library is as revolutionary as it looks. The irregularly shaped monolithic prism is clad in black granite and leans toward the river to capture as much natural light as possible. The building’s significant tilt, wave-like balconies and expansion as it rises from top to bottom presented a slew of design challenges that your guide will thoroughly explain. The Blue Planet may be even more striking as it is the largest aquarium in Europe and resembles a giant whirlpool – a design inspired by the shape of water in endless motion. The building’s exterior is covered in aluminum panels that are reminiscent of fish scales, while the interior curved ceiling evokes images of the baleens of a massive whale. The guide will further elaborate on the technological challenges from constructing the Blue Planet seaside.

• Tour two innovative buildings with an architectural historian to learn their design complexities. • Gain insight into why the Black Diamond intentionally tilts and expands from top to bottom. • Discover how the whirlpool-shaped Blue Planet aquarium defied architectural conventions.

Hotel Danmark

Wander the streets of Copenhagen and you’ll discover why its residents are consistently ranked among the happiest people on earth. Everything is pristine and charming: rainbow-hued buildings line the canals; there are historic landmarks, Michelin-starred restaurants, cool cafes galore; and locals exude the laidback hygge mentality, cruising around on bicycles with flowers and freshly baked cinnamon buns in their baskets.

Sleek Scandinavian design and classical European grandeur is presented with equal enthusiasm, which is perhaps why it was named the World Capital of Architecture by UNESCO in 2023. And beyond the Danish capital’s aesthetic highlights, it boasts a variety of unique cultural attractions, from the whimsical Tivoli Gardens – the world’s oldest (and undoubtedly, the most elegant) theme park, to royal palaces, and The National Gallery of Denmark, where art aficionados admire Danish treasures alongside an impressive Matisse collection.

With a wave of hip new developments and Scandinavian Airlines flying direct from nine US cities, there has never been a better time to plan your trip. We’ve compiled this list of the best hotels in Copenhagen based on a combination of personal experience, editor-loved properties, and winners of T+L’s World’s Best Awards and It List. Read on to find our top picks.

Hotel d'Angleterre, Copenhagen

Hotel d'Angleterre Copenhagen

This luxurious hotel has been Copenhagen’s crown jewel for more than 250 years and is a center of celebration around Christmas, Easter, and key Danish holidays.

As you might expect, it is one of the more expensive options in the city.

Hotel d’Angleterre is to Copenhagen what Claridge’s is to London and The Carlyle is to New York : an iconic landmark that embodies the spirit of the city in the most elegant fashion. It has been a perennial favorite for over 250 years, hosting a revolving door of world leaders and luminaries that would accept nothing less than excellence. And excellence you are guaranteed, from the prime location in the center of Copenhagen’s largest public square, flanked by the Royal Danish Theater and Charlottenborg Palace, to luxurious rooms with sprawling marble bathrooms and every contemporary comfort that you could require.

Michelin-starred cuisine is on offer at the French-inspired Marchal, where you can order fine dining specialties like lobster topped with caviar and gougeres with truffle cream. And traditional Nordic spa treatments can be experienced at the hotel’s wellness center, Amazing Space, home to the only pool in inner Copenhagen. D'Angleterre seamlessly blends old-world grandeur with modern Scandinavian luxury, and it was ranked on Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards in 2021 and 2023.

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Kongens Nytorv
  • Distance From Airport: 6 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Royal Danish Theater, Charlottenborg Palace, Amalienborg Palace, Nyhavn
  • Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible
  • Rates: From $788 per night
  • Wi-Fi: Complimentary

Also available to book at Expedia.com

This hotel takes sustainable hospitality to another level: it’s carbon negative, almost entirely plastic-free, and if you book a room on the hotel’s website, it will donate a tree on your behalf.

You’ll often find a DJ spinning decks in the courtyard at night – a dream for some, a nightmare for others.

Located in the hip Vesterbro neighborhood, this stylish 88-room hotel opened right before the pandemic and has since become one of the most coveted places to stay in Copenhagen. It featured on Travel + Leisure’s It List in 2022 and the World’s Best Awards in 2023, and as is often the case with any trendy new hotel, it is the destination du jour for professionals arriving for key cultural events, such as Copenhagen Fashion Week and 3daysofdesign.

Café Coco is located at the entrance of the hotel and is the primary dining offering on site, with a cool, casual atmosphere. But if you’re in the mood for something a bit more formal, Coco’s Mediterranean-inspired sister restaurant, Delphine, is located 30 steps away. Room sizes vary from singles at 150 square feet to junior suites at 270 square feet, and the larger rooms include a sitting area and bathtubs. Overall, it’s an excellent option for individuals, couples, and business travelers heading to Copenhagen.

  • Neighborhood: Vesterbro
  • Distance From Airport: 8 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: The Glyptotek Museum, The Meatpacking District, Tivoli, Sankt Jørgens Park
  • Rates: From $202 per night

Hotel Sanders

It’s full of mid-century character and is located just opposite the Royal Danish Theater.

Rooms do not have coffee machines or kettles.

Rendered in a calming neutral color palette, Hotel Sanders is a stylish boutique hotel with 53-rooms spread across four townhouses. It featured on Travel + Leisure’s It list in 2018 and is a popular option for design lovers, with rooms that look like they’ve been decorated over the decades rather than dressed in an artificial mid-century theme.

The location is ideal, right in the historic center by Nyhavn Canal (the picture that’s likely to come up when you Google “Copenhagen”), and it’s within walking distance to key attractions and cafes. On-site dining consists of Sanders Kitchen – an all-day eatery with a simple evening menu serving delicious seasonal fare (think: dishes like salt-baked celeriac, vol-au-vent, and stracciatella with pumpkin and sage), and it is also home to Tata – a vintage-style cocktail bar that comes alive at night with both locals and travelers alike.

  • Neighborhood: Historic center, near Nyhavn Canal
  • Distance From Airport: 5 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Nyhavn Canal, The Royal Theater, The New Opera House, Designmuseum Denmark, Amelienborg Palace
  • Rates: From $255 per night

The Audo Residence

It feels like stepping into an interior design photoshoot, which is unsurprising, given it’s the hospitality branch of luxury furniture brand, Audo Copenhagen.

It’s not a traditional hotel, so it lacks some of the standard facilities that you may require (however, if you want a workout, it has a partnership with popular local gym Nordic Strong).

With only 10 well-edited rooms, The Audo Residence takes the concept of a boutique hotel to another level, feeling part concept store, part Airbnb. The rooms are spacious, with different residential-style configurations, ranging from the penthouse to studio suites, and it features stylish decor throughout, with pieces from Audo’s contemporary furniture collection, all available for purchase, should you be inspired to recreate the look at home.

Bathrooms follow the same Scandi luxe theme, and there is a restaurant on site, where organic sharing plates are served during the day and a seasonal three-course menu is offered at night (a favorite is the rib-eye sandwich on brioche with wasabi and leek mayo). Also within the same complex is the official showroom for Audo Copenhagen, so if you’re a design aficionado, this is an excellent option.

  • Neighborhood: Nordhavn
  • Nearby Attractions: Nordhavn Bassin, Rundetaarn, Strøget
  • Rates: From $405 per night

Manon Les Suites

Also available to book at Agoda

It has a lovely tropical-style pool that feels more like Bali than Copenhagen – a unique culture mash.

If you’re seeking something that feels distinctly Scandinavian, this is not the place – it has a jungle-style theme rather than the classically minimalistic vibe that the city is known for.

Located in a former factory in the ultra-hip Vesterbro neighborhood, Manon Les Suites is unlike any other hotel in the city. The aesthetic takes inspiration from Bali, with a pool that is supremely photogenic and a rooftop that is perfect for sunbathing, should you want your city escape with a side of resort-esque relaxation. The 87 suites are generously sized, outfitted in eco-friendly furnishings with kitchenettes and sofa beds, making it a great option for families or groups of friends (especially if you don’t intend on having every meal out). The hotel’s restaurant, Chapung, is also notable, serving Asian fusion classics from the sixth floor overlooking the city.

  • Distance From Airport: 9 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Tivoli, Rundetårn, Glyptoteket, Rosenborg Castle
  • Accessibility : It is not ideal for wheelchair access given there are doorsteps in the rooms
  • Rates: From $245 per night

It has a rooftop terrace with 360-degree views across the city, plus a complimentary wine hour.

Some of the smaller rooms are indeed small (as in, best suited for one person).

Hotel Danmark follows the classic Copenhagen formula of minimal decor, organic food, and a hipster-luxe vibe. Its standout attraction is the rooftop terrace, which offers impressive views across the city, and in the summer months, it hosts a series of events and musical acts, attracting a mix of local denizens and international guests. There are 89 rooms that are indeed compact: the largest of them all is the junior suite, which is 322 square feet, and the smallest is a mere 130 square feet – just enough space to undress and roll into bed. It also has a bunk room category, which is a great option for groups of friends touring the city and simply seeking a clean and modern crash pad with an abundance of photogenic backdrops.

  • Neighborhood: Copenhagen Cultural District
  • Distance From Airport: 4 miles
  • Nearby Attractions: Tivoli, The National Museum, City Hall, Strøget
  • Rates: From $112 per night

It is located at the edge of Tivoli – Copenhagen’s equivalent of Disneyland – so it is a great option for families with kids.

It is one of the more costly options in the city (but it is worth it in our opinion).

Tivoli is one of Copenhagen’s most beloved attractions and the Nimb Hotel sits right alongside its fairytale grounds on the western side of the gardens. The exterior looks more like an opulent Moorish palace rather than a historic Danish building, and it’s particularly enchanting at night, when it’s illuminated with glowing lights.

As for the actual accommodations, there are 38 spacious rooms with views across the theme park and the gardens, all furnished with elegant, modern interiors. Amenities are a step above standard, with Bang & Olufsen televisions, Nespresso machines, cocktail cabinets filled with spirit decanters, and some with fireplaces and balconies. It also has a rooftop swimming pool and six restaurants on-site, so there are options to suit everyone.

  • Nearby Attractions: Tivoli, The Kings Gardens, Amalienborg Palace
  • Accessibility: Nimb Hotel offers three rooms that are particularly suitable for wheelchair users: rooms 18, 21, and 37
  • Rates: From $998 per night

Nobis Hotel

Nobis Copenhagen

Also available to book at Mr & Mrs Smith

This Swedish-owned property is centrally located and luxurious, with detail-oriented decor and service.

Some of the rooms are located on street level and people can peer in, so there is not a lot of privacy – we would suggest requesting something on a higher level.

Located in the building that formerly housed the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music , Nobis is the sister property of the luxurious Nobis Hotel Stockholm, marking the Swedish hospitality group’s first foray outside of Sweden. The interiors have been designed to respect the building’s heritage, blending original period details with modern Scandinavian minimalism.

It has 75 rooms, including four suites, all of which contain high ceilings that provide the illusion of having even more space. Interior highlights include plush furnishings, such as the Duxiana mattresses on steel four-poster bed frames, Italian marble bathrooms, and bath products by Byredo – certainly better than your average list of amenities. Modern renditions of Nordic fare can be found at the hotel’s restaurant, NOI, and you can enjoy elegant seasonal cocktails at the sleek Marble Bar (which does an excellent espresso martini with butterscotch foam). It also has a wellness center with a pool, sauna, gym, and lounge – ideal for all of those hygge moments.

  • Nearby Attractions: Tivoli Gardens, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Danish Architecture Center, City Hall
  • Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible with two adapted rooms available
  • Rates: From $810 per night

Hotel Ottilia

Also available to book at Travelocity

It’s a dream destination for beer lovers, housed in the former Carlsberg brewery building. And in the spirit of imbibing, it has a wine hour and a nightcap hour, on the house for all guests.

The area is still being developed, so there aren’t as many shops and cafes nearby as there are in other neighborhoods.

This industrial hotel is housed in the former Carlsberg brewery building in the up-and-coming Carlsberg City district. It has a distinct façade lined with giant Instagram-worthy gold circles, and inside, you’ll find original architectural details, including steel beams and concrete walls.

The raw, minimalist theme continues throughout the hotel’s 155 rooms, dressed with herringbone floors with metal tables and clean, simple furnishings rendered in a mosaic of block-colored neutrals – think charcoals, tans, and icy whites. On top of the hotel, you’ll find Tramonto Rooftop – an Italian restaurant and bar with impressive 360-degree views across the city – a popular place for both locals and travelers during the warmer months. It also features a small fitness room and in-room fitness kits are available as well.

  • Neighborhood: Carlsberg City District
  • Nearby Attractions: Copenhagen Zoo, Carlsberg Visitor Center, The Hillhouse Museum, Cisterns in Søndermarken Museum
  • Rates: From $138 per night
  • Wi-Fi: Complimentary, once you sign up for the newsletter

Villa Copenhagen

Also available to book at Hotels.com

It’s a travel industry favorite, renowned for running a slick operation and for its spacious suites.

It has 390 rooms, which is on the larger side for any hotel.

Since opening its doors in 2020, Villa Copenhagen has made a favorable impression among travel industry insiders, including Jaclyn Sienna India, founder and CEO at Sienna Charles, a luxury travel concierge. “My go-to accommodation is Villa Copenhagen, housed in a gorgeous century-old building. Their designer-furnished suites typically feature a master bedroom, a dining area, and a bathroom complete with a spacious freestanding bathtub.” Rooms are indeed more spacious than most in the city. As for the other highlights? “I highly recommend trying the pastries at their on-site bakery and the fish at the brasserie, which uses only locally-sourced ingredients,” India adds. “And I love starting my mornings doing yoga in the fitness room, and occasionally wrapping up the day with a session in the sauna."

  • Nearby Attractions: Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Nyhavn, Tivoli, Rosenborg Castle
  • Rates: From $303 per night

The Darling

It has a homey ambiance; plus, complimentary slippers and a bottle of champagne are served on arrival.

There is no elevator as the building dates back to the early 1700s.

This exclusive guest house contains two beautifully decorated residences that feel like you’re staying in the private apartment of a hip Danish friend rather than a hotel that you’re paying for. There are abstract artworks, whimsical wallpapers, and stylish examples of Danish decor throughout – everything looks like it’s been carefully collected over time by someone with good taste.

If you’re looking for more of a residence-style accommodation, where you have all the facilities that a private apartment would offer, this is a great option, given it includes a kitchen, living room, dining room, and a study, in addition to a spacious bedroom and bathroom. The inaugural residence named “The Grand,” also has a private outdoor terrace overlooking The Church of the Holy Spirit – a tranquil place to enjoy coffee in the morning. And despite the residential-style set up, it has a concierge that can provide all the services you would be able to access at a luxury hotel, including a driver, a chef, a masseuse, and even a florist.

  • Neighborhood: Amagertorv
  • Nearby Attractions: Strøget, Rundetaarn, Copenhagen University
  • Accessibility: Not wheelchair accessible
  • Rates: The Classic begins at $1,028 and The Grand begins at $1,352 per night

Hotel Skt. Annae

It has an authentic Scandinavian vibe and is located close to many of the city’s star historic attractions.

Like many of the hotels in the city, rooms are on the smaller side and can feel a bit cramped.

This authentic hotel is located in Frederiksstaden – an area known for its architectural beauty and well-preserved buildings from the Rococo era. Nearby you will find notable historic attractions, including Amalienborg Palace, where the Danish royal family resides, as well as the Marble Church (Frederik's Church), Amalie Garden, and the Nyhavn neighborhood is just a three-minute walk away.

Accommodations vary from the penthouse to apartments, suites, and rooms that are suitable for solo travelers and couples, and the decor has a warm, lived-in feel.

  • Neighborhood: Frederiksstaden
  • Nearby Attractions: Amaliehaven, Amalienborg Castle, Kongens Nytorv, Christiansborg Palace, Rundetårn, Castle Rosenborg
  • Rates: From $173 per night

Hotel CPH Living

It is a floating hotel located on a boat – a unique option for anyone who is interested in experiencing an unconventional stay.

Given it's on the water, it is not for everyone, and it's not ideal for anyone who suffers from motion sickness.

For something totally unique, consider this floating boutique hotel docked in Copenhagen’s city center. It has 12 rooms throughout, designed with wooden floors, simple furnishings, and large windows with front-row views of the water – it feels like being on a very small cruise ship.

A basic breakfast is provided in the mornings, but there is no restaurant on site, so you’ll need to venture out for dining. One of the highlights is the terrace with sun loungers, which is lovely if you’re visiting over the summer months. If you’re a maritime enthusiast or enjoy hotels that are a bit more unconventional, this could be the place for you.

  • Neighborhood: Christianshavn
  • Nearby Attractions: Danish Royal Library, National Museum of Denmark, Christiansborg Palace, Tivoli Gardens
  • Accessibility: It is not suitable given it is on a boat
  • Rates: From $123 per night

It’s a lively social hub, where you won’t feel the need to leave for dinner or drinks in the evening for a taste of the nightlife scene.

If you want some peace and quiet, this may not be the place, as it can be noisy with DJs and concerts on weekends.

SP34 is a hip establishment from the hoteliers behind some of Copenhagen’s most revered design hotels, and the group’s signature style is evident throughout, with Nordic decor and a cool, minimalist vibe. The 188-room hotel opened in 2014, with three restaurants (including an organic burger joint, a plant-focused bistro, and a casual eatery, Din Nye Ven), four bars, a private cinema, and a terrace across three connected apartment buildings.

There are exposed brick walls, calming neutral tones, and clean, minimal Scandinavian furniture is featured throughout. It’s a great place for creatives that thrive in a lively scene, and on Friday nights, there are DJs and musical acts, which is ideal if you want to immerse yourself in the local nightlife culture without having to leave the property.

  • Neighborhood: Latin Quarter
  • Nearby Attractions: City Hall Square, Strøget, gourmet food market, Torvehallerne
  • Rates: From $119 per night

Radisson Collection Hotel, Royal Copenhagen

Rickard L. Eriksson

It is located in Copenhagen’s first skyscraper, and as such, it provides great views across the city.

For a hotel chain brand, prices can be steep.

Business travelers gravitate toward this popular hotel located within Copenhagen’s first skyscraper (as you might expect from a corporate-friendly hotel chain like the Radisson), which has all of the big hotel amenities one could need: conference rooms, event spaces, fitness facilities, and conveniences like dry cleaning.

Rooms have sprawling views across the city, given they’re positioned high in the sky, and the hotel underwent a renovation in 2018, so everything feels fresh and polished. There are a variety of room types, but the hotel’s crown jewel is the Panorama Suite, which is almost 550 square feet and resembles a retro airport lounge. For dining, there is a Peruvian Japanese restaurant, ISSEI Copenhagen, that is not to be missed, as well as a classic breakfast selection. It is conveniently located near key transport hubs, vibrant neighborhoods, and key attractions, including Tivoli.

Know Before You Go

Embrace the concept of hygge.

“The essence of hygge is something that is very unique, though hard to pinpoint, especially in the English language where it often gets translated to cozy,” says Mads Østergaard, U.S. head of PR and Press for VisitDenmark. “Hygge is more like a state of mind, an ambiance, a feeling, or a vibe. Think cozy sweaters, a warm fireplace, good friends around you, a laid-back feeling, family, the feeling of being sheltered. Though all that is not uniquely Danish, the Germans call it ‘Gemütlichkeit,’ the Norwegians call it ‘Koselig,’ and the Dutch call it ‘Gezelligheid,’ we are probably the only ones who use it as a verb. We can 'hygge' with each other. We can ask a good friend if we want to 'hygge.' As an adjective or an adverb, it constantly gets thrown around in the Danish language as a way of saying ‘nice.’ Was it a good party? Yes, it was ‘hygge-ligt.’ That shows how highly valued hygge is.”

Most people speak English

“Undskyld, jeg forstår ikke, hvad du siger! Just kidding!” Østergaard jokes. “Practically everyone in Denmark speaks English. Nowadays, we start learning in first grade, but my grandparents’ generation spoke English very well, too. As a tiny nation that wants its voice to be heard on the world stage, we quickly realized that we needed to speak English.”

The best way to get around is by bicycle

“About 50 percent of Copenhageners bike to work every day, including politicians and on rare occasions, the royals,” Østergaard says. “Biking is a safe, affordable, and green way to get around in the city, and continued municipal investment has made this number rise over the last years. Copenhageners might bike fast to get from point A to B, so watch out in rush hour. Luckily, most of our designated biking lanes are quite spacious. And if you’re not comfortable on the ‘iron horse’ as we call it, our new subway system will get you anywhere in the city with new improvements getting you to places like Sydhavnen in the southern part of Copenhagen.”

Experience the city like a local

Østergaard recommends experiencing Copenhagen like a local. “Ride a bike through the biking lanes that snake through the city like green highways. Share a meal with Copenhageners at one of our great communal dining destinations. And if the temperature allows it, jump in the water in our clean canals at some of our designated harbor-baths. As a former Copenhagener, these were all part of my everyday life,” he explains. “And don’t just stay in the city center. Explore the many neighborhoods like the new Carlsberg neighborhood on the former brewing grounds of the beer giant with an eclectic mix of new and old architecture or the vibrant and multicultural neighborhood of Nørrebro. Or go even further – with a train ride of 30 minutes you can experience idyllic fishing villages with colorful houses like Dragør or see King Hamlet’s Elsinore with the Majestic Kronborg Castle overlooking the narrow strait between Denmark and Sweden.”
