The Front Bottoms (formed in 2007) is an American indie punk band that combines pop, rock and punk influences with witty and often surreal wordplay, hailing from New Jersey, U.S.

After finishing his first year of college, vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Brain Sella, along with childhood friend and drummer Mathew Uychich, began playing together under the moniker The Front Bottoms. They had been writing songs since sixth grade and first performed together at their high school talent show, playing an original song and a Modest Mouse cover. Before long Uychich’s brother, also named Brian, joined the band playing keyboard. In 2007 the EPs “This is Ours but You Can Have It” and “You’re My Boyfriend Now” were released, along with a year later their debut studio album “I Hate My Friends".

The band supported the releases, initially with local shows around New Jersey, before working their way along the East Coast, playing anywhere that would have them. After releasing their second DIY album “My Grandmother vs. Pneumonia” in 2009 and the EP “Slow Dance to Soft Rock”, Brian Uychich left the Front Bottoms to focus on his education. In 2011 the band signed with independent New Jersey label Bar/None Records, who issued their eponymously-titled label debut in September of that year.

The band made a name for themselves for their extensive touring, enlisting the help of bassist and backing vocalist Tom Warren and guitar, trumpet and keyboard player Ciaran O’Donnell to do so.

The Front Bottom’s released their fourth full-length album “Talon of the Hawk” in May 2013, inspired by the character Hawk from the David Lynch TV series “Twin Peaks”. The album earned a critical response from the musical press and spawned the video and single “Twin Sized Mattress”. The band has subsequently issued the EP “Rose” released in June 2014 again on Bar/None Records.

Live reviews

As a very small girl, going to one of The Front Bottom's concerts was pretty rough. Pretty much the entire crowd was a giant mosh pit. That being said, it was the best concert I've ever been to. Brian's voice was exactly as it sounds on their records, even better if that's possible. They were so happy to be there with all of us and it just made the entire experience incredible. I met Matt and Brian after the show and got pictures and they were the absolute sweetest people. Matt gave me a plastic flower from the set and they were just so cute and happy that people enjoyed themselves. If you ever get the chance to see The Front Bottoms live-- do it. It was the best concert experience I've ever had.

Incredible! Just as good in person as on their albums, and they played quite a few songs. West Virginia, Flashlight, The Beers, and Summer Shandy were my personal favorites because the crowd went fucking insane.

Having said that, an issue more with the venue than anything else is that there was very little ventilation in the room, it was probably about 110 degrees and smelled disgusting and several people passed out. Also, as someone who is very short, the "mosh pit" was kind of dangerous -- I say this because it wasn't so much a pit as just an undulating blob of people who weren't even shoving each other on purpose. I saw a couple people get elbowed in the face.

The show was amazing!!! The front bottoms were nice lads and their music is great! I definitely go see them again. I loved the gig's atmosphere. It was my friends first gig and she loved it too. When they played twin sized mattress, is a moment I will remember. Thank you for a brilliant night!

The gnarwolves, who were supporting them seemed lovely as well and the music was good.

However the other support band, apologies I have none, were quite insensitive about mental health issues. But this didn't ruin the night.

The Front Bottoms were amazing! The support was Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band(?) who I'd never heard of but were good. The stage looked amazing, the lighting was brilliant and there was a giant inflated T, F & B. They played some oldies as well as the new album and Brian was really sweet and funny and dedicated a few to Brighton and all round it was just a really cute 7 enjoyable gig! Probably the only thing which was a bit of a letdown was the people there. In front of me was some complete douchebag who kept standing and jumping on me and was totally drunk. However, this is something that can happen at any gig, and I still had a lovely time!

The opening acts before were stellar but nothing compared to the energy that surged through the crowd when the front bottoms jumped on stage. Any notion of personal space was thrown out the door because everyone was pushed into tiny pancakes moving to the same beat. Toes stepped on, hair pulled, and elbows shoved but none of that mattered because the show was just that great. Being 2 feet away from Brian sella and the only thing blocking us from fully colliding was a metal barricade and a poor girl squeezed onto it. Nothing has ever been so exciting and I'm stoked I went! Thanks for a great show The Front Bottoms!!!

I've had the pleasure of being able to see The Front Bottoms live and meeting them twice. Both of them have been by far the best concerts I've been too. I've watched megadeth; Roger Water's, Iron Maiden, Blink-182, Slayer and many more, but there's no concert as unique as The Front Bottoms. Everyone screams along and knows the words of every song. They're also both really nice guys, I've taken pictures with Matt and Brian and got autographs and they don't blow you off like other artists. They make their fans happy and give them a hell of a show full of energy and fun. Any music fan will love to see them.

Fantastic show from The Front Bottoms at the AC Beer and Music Festical 04/01. This band is super energetic and very engaged with the crowd during their live shows. I jumped and danced and screamed my fool head off and had a freaking fantastic time.

I learned to love this band by seeing them open for someone else, and I swear, as great as their recordings are, in their live shows, this band is on a whole other level. If you are on the fence st all about checking out their live show, JUST GO ALREADY.

The Front Bottoms opened for Manchester Orchestra. The band that played before TFB was called Brother Bird. I was really excited to see TFB again after seeing them open for Brand New a while back, but unfortunately they were outshined by both Brother Bird and Manchester. It was a fun show, but the lead singer was pretty hoarse (I won’t begrudge him that) and the set in general was just kind of lackluster. Still a fan though.

Discovered them when they were opening for Brand New at the Bryce Jordan Centar. I ended up enjoying them more than Brand New! Their stage presence is amazing and the lead singers vocals are spot on. They had unique props on stage like a couch and lamps. I would love to go to another one or two of their shows!

the show was okay... they are always very good live and always go off but they went first instead of manchester orchestra and skipped a bunch of the good songs they usually played on this tour .. i was waiting for bops but they didnt slap as hard i thought they would :/

Marking the first visit from the New Jersey rock outfit since 2017 and Australia’s first chance to experience songs from their acclaimed 2023 release You Are Who You Hang Out With . The tour will see The Front Bottoms returning to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth to play their biggest Australian shows to date throughout April.

Recorded in multi-week spurts with producer Mike Sapone, both in The Front Bottoms ’ New Jersey studio and Ghost Hit Recording in Massachusetts, You Are Who You Hang Out With features the singles “Emotional,” “Punching Bag” and “Outlook” . Brooklyn Vegan hailed “Outlook” as “a crunchy, catchy, power pop-punk song with that distinct Front Bottoms flair,” while UPROXX attested that “‘Emotional’ shows a new direction, forward-looking and ambitious.” “[It’s] all of the best parts of the Front Bottoms’ aesthetic” raved PASTE, and Consequence urged “there’s plenty more classic Front Bottoms to come.”
