God of War Nornir Chests: All Locations and Puzzle Solutions

Image of Jonathan Moore

Nornir Chests are just one of many different chest types to collect in God of War  on the PS4 and PC. Most contain hacksilver, while others will contain runes. Nornir Chests, however, contain upgrades for Kratos, such as health and rage boosts. You’ll want to take advantage of these upgrades, but their boons are locked behind rune puzzles .

To unlock Nornir Chests in God of War , you’ll need to solve the puzzles guarding them by breaking the three seals locking them. Some runes will be easy to find, while others will take some ingenuity to destroy. This guide will show you how to find each Nornir Chest, as well as where to find each and every rune-covered seal.

All God of War Nornir Chest Locations and Rune Puzzle Solutions

Wildwoods: 1 nornir chest, nornir chest #1: after your first battle (health upgrade).

the journey chest god of war

Once you’ve defeated your first set of Draugr in the Wildwoods, head straight ahead. Go past the life stone on the ground and toward the blocked passage in front of you. Break through the wood to find this Nornir chest.

  • Seal 1: As you walk into the alcove, the first rune seal is immediately to your right  — on the other side of the stairs. Throw your ax to break it.
  • Seal 2: The second rune is to the right of the Nornir Chest, sitting against the wall.
  • Seal 3: The third rune is on the left-hand side of the room in a stone sarcophagus.

River Pass and Witch’s Cave: 5 Nornir Chests

Nornir chest #1 after the revenant (health upgrade).

the journey chest god of war

Just like with the first artifact in this area , it will take you a while to get to the first Nornir Chest in the River Pass. After you fight the Revenant, who will come after the Heavy Draugr, climb up to the second story and turn right. You’ll see the chest among some debris straight ahead.

Note: If you turn left instead of right, you’ll find a shrine.

  • Seal 1:  In the top right-hand corner when facing the Nornir Chest.
  • Seal 2: Turn around and look upward. To the left of the bridge in the distance (not the one closest to you) and past the chain, you’ll see a second rune.
  • Seal 3: Lower the bridge closest to you and go across. Once you cross over, stop and look up and left. The third rune seal is in an alcove there.

Nornir Chest #2: After the Spiked Ceiling Puzzle (Rage Upgrade)

the journey chest god of war

After completing the spiked ceiling puzzle (and after Atreus joins you on the other side), turn around and climb on the spike contraption. Look right and find the Nornir Chest.

  • Seal 1: Turn around from the Nornir Chest and see the rune seal on a rock.
  • Seal 2: From 1, turn left and look up.
  • Seal 3: This one is a bit tricky. From 2, look left again and see the blue wisps of the seal behind a beam. Raise the platform you’re on to get a good angle from which to throw your ax.

Nornir Chest #3: After the Sand Puzzle and Troll Fight (Health Upgrade)

the journey chest god of war

Once you’ve completed the sand puzzle, you’ll go through a cavern and fight a troll on the other side. Defeat them and look to the left of the area. At the edge, you’ll find this Nornir Chest. The seals here are bells, and you must ring them in quick succession to open it.

  • Bell 1: Just above the chest.
  • Bell 2: Look left and up. This bell is right behind you on the cliff overlooking the waterfall.
  • The easiest method is to hit the bells in this order: 3,1,2 . You’ll only have a few seconds to strike each bell. You’ll get an Idunn Apple for your troubles.

Nornir Chest #4: In the Witch’s Cave (Cannot Reach on First Visit)

the journey chest god of war

This Nornir Chest can be found in the witch’s cave after you beat the nightmares. From the bridge, turn around and look toward the back of the area (toward the witch’s house). Down below, you’ll see the chest in the water.

You can’t get this Nornir Chest yet, though. You can revisit when Atreus can build bridges.

Nornir Chest #5: Exiting the Cave Through the Well (Cannot Reach on First Visit)

the journey chest god of war

Since you’ll also need Atreus to get you across the water in the cave, you won’t be able to exit through the well the first time you visit this area. But once you can reach the Nornir Chest, you’ll need the Winds of Hel  to open it. We’ll update this guide with a screenshot and steps when we access this area.

Foothills: 1 Nornir Chest

Nornir chest #1: after meeting sindri.

the journey chest god of war

Eventually, you’ll meet Brok’s brother, Sindri. After speaking with him, leave his camp and go straight ahead. Enemies will spawn and a protracted conflict will ensue. Once you’ve defeated all of the enemies, head up the hill and go right. In the back of the area, you’ll find this Nornir chest.

To open it, you’ll need to align each of three turnable poles to the runes on the chest. It does matter which poles show which runes since each pole doesn’t have all of the runes carved into them. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Pole 1: Directly to the left of the Nornir Chest. This one should be turned to the “squiggly” symbol .
  • Pole 2: Turn around and go back down the hill. Turn left, and you’ll see this pole nestled in the cliff just above eye level. This one should be turned to the “P” symbol .
  • Pole 3: Turn right and follow the path around to the fallen tree. This pole will be mostly obscured by the poisonous fog. Throw your ax at the fog pole to reveal the rune. This one should be turned to the backward “B” symbol .

Alfheim: 4 Nornir Chests

Nornir chest #1: light elf sanctuary (health upgrade).

the journey chest god of war

After defeating the enemies on the beach at Light Elf Sanctuary, follow the path until it forks. Take a left and you’ll come to the area pictured above. The Nornir Chest is inside the shelter.

There are no runes on the bells in this area, but the sequence to open the chest is this:

  • The bell above the doorway
  • Turn left and ring the third bell
  • Turn left and ring the sixth bell

Inside the Nornir Chest, you’ll find an Idunn Apple .

Note: If you don’t know how to get to Light Elf Sanctuary, turn right as soon as you enter the Lake of Light. Go all the way to the end. Then turn right and follow the channel around. You’ll find the shore and can dock there.

Nornir Chest #2: Ringed Temple Trench (Health Upgrade)

the journey chest god of war

After you enter the Ringed Temple, prepare yourself for a fight against the Dark Elves. Once you’ve defeated them, continue along the trench on the left side. Eventually, you’ll come across the next Nornir Chest nestled in the wall.

Go to the right side and activate the wheel so that the middle section in front of you descends. Throw your ax to cement it into place.

  • Seal 1: Drop down. Across the platform in front of you.
  • Seal 2: Turn around. On the wall behind the wheel.

Now climb back up and turn the wheel all the down so that both pieces of the floor (the middle part and the part you’re standing on) descend. Throw your ax to cement it into place.

  • Seal 3: Turn around. Climb up the ledge to find it nestled in the wall.

You’ll get an Idunn Apple for all your efforts.

Nornir Chest #3 Ringed Temple Sealed Doors (Rage Upgrade)

the journey chest god of war

When you reach the Ringed Temple proper, the blue doors in front of you will be locked. Before continuing with the story, turn left and follow the steps downward toward a Nornir Chest. At the bottom, turn right, and you’ll see a gate with two nodes, one holding it shut and the other hanging from the ceiling behind. Throw your axe and destroy both at the same time.

Once the gate is open, you’ll need to ring three bells in quick succession.

  • Bell 1: At the end of the corridor above the chest.
  • Bell 2: To the left of the gate, nestled in the wall.
  • Bell 3: Behind you, turned at an angle.

There’s no easy way to open this chest other than being fast. We found that the sequence 3,2,1 was most effective . Claim your Horn of Bloodmead .

Nornir Chest #4: At the Gate (Rage Upgrade)

the journey chest god of war

After Atreus receives the ability to build light bridges, you’ll eventually make it back to the temple’s main doors, the ones you could not near Nornir Chest 3. But don’t go through the doors just yet! Instead, turn around and place the crystal in the socket under the shelter.

Once the light bridge is created, climb to the top to find the fourth Nornir Chest. Opening this one is another test of speed and accuracy.

  • Bell 1: Inside the shelter, just above the chest.
  • Bell 2: Above the stairs on the right (where you climbed up).
  • Bell 3: Outside the window on the opposite side of Bell 2.

A Horn of Bloodmead will be inside.

The Mountain: 2 Nornir Chests

Nornir chest #1 inside the mountain (rage upgrade).

the journey chest god of war

After you complete the light puzzle when you first enter the mountain (where the deer god sits on the throne), a passageway will open on the right side of the room. Go through and follow the path. After fighting the Revenant, climb up the ledge and defeat all of the Draugr.

From the ledge you originally climbed to get into this area, go left. Have Atreus create a lightbridge and go up it. You’ll find this Nornir Chest there. And like the chest in the Foothills, you’ll need to align runes on three turnable poles.

  • Pole 1: At the foot of the bridge to your right. This pole should show the “R” symbol.
  • Pole 2: Go to the ledge you climbed to get in this area. Look up and left to find it nestled on the cliff above. This pole should show the “B” symbol.
  • Pole 3: Drop down off the ledge from Pole 2 and turn immediately right. This pole should show the “N” symbol.

You’ll be rewarded with a Horn of Bloodmead .

Nornir Chest #2: After Getting Shock Arrows, Where Hel-Walkers Worship (Health Upgrade)

the journey chest god of war

After finding Artifact 3 at the bridge and using the sap bucket there to make a new path, you’ll pass an alcove covered in sap. It won’t have a crystal to shoot.

However, move toward the Hel-Walkers worshiping ahead. You’ll they are worshiping the next Nornir Chest. Defeat them and use the sap dispenser to open the alcove that was previously locked (there is also a Shrine in the alcove).

  • Seal 1: In the room with the shrine. Turn right and look up.
  • Seal 2: Go back to the room with the sap dispenser and use the sap to lower the bridges. As you cross the bridge, look right. There is an opening with the Seal inside.
  • Seal 3: After defeating the enemies across the bridge, use the wheel to raise the bridge to the next level. Freeze the gears next to it. Go up the bridge and look right. The Seal is along the wall.

You will receive an Idunn Apple for your efforts.

Lake of Nine: 4 Nornir Chests

Nornir chest #1: lookout tower’s spike trap (health upgrade).

the journey chest god of war

Go to the end of Tyr’s Bridge (toward the Foothills) and take a right. Drop down and head straight. After a few steps, you’ll see a Nornir Chest on your left. You’ll need to ring three bells to open this one  — but they’re stuck behind three spike traps. To lower the spikes, hit the turnable pole above the chest.

  • Bell 1: To the left of the turnable pole.
  • Bell 2: Up and right of the Nornir Chest.
  • Bell 3: Right of Bell 2.

Claim your Idunn Apple .

Nornir Chest #2: On the Shore at Forgotten Caverns (Health Upgrade)

the journey chest god of war

You really can’t miss this Nornir Chest. You’ll see it on the shore as soon as you dock at Forgotten Caverns. Take out the enemies first, then head to the left to find the seals. They’re all in one place this time, but the puzzle is a bit different.

The seals are on individual rotating arms. Hit one, and all of the arms will spin. Hit another, and the arms will spin faster. You only have a few seconds to hit all of them, so the best sequence is:  Bottom, Middle, Top or Top, Middle, Bottom.

Hitting the middle seal second stops all of the seals from spinning . Complete the puzzle and open the Nornir Chest to get an Idunn Apple .

Nornir Chest #3: Light Elf Outpost After Water Descends Second Time

the journey chest god of war

After the water in the Lake of Nine descends a second time, Light Elf Outpost will be revealed. It’s to the left of Helheim Tower  — the area with the ruins in the water. There’s a Level 5 Troll on the island, as well as a handful of high-level poison enemies.

Defeat your adversaries and look to the left of the gate. Smash the boards to reveal a crystal. Create a light bridge up to the Nornir Chest.

  • Seal 1: Look toward the cliff behind the Nornir Chest. The seal is at eye level on the opposite side of the ruins.
  • Seal 2: From the chest, turn right. Go through the gate and stop. Turn right again and look out to the broken bridge in the water. The seal is on the column closest to you.
  • Seal 3: From there, go left and down the path. Follow it all the way around  — until you can either climb up the wall or down the chain. The seal will be nestled in the gate wall in front of you.

Nornir Chest #4: Cliffs of the Raven Using Winds of Hel

the journey chest god of war

Another area that will be revealed after the water in the Lake of Nine descends a second time. Dock at the new landing at the Cliffs of the Raven. Make your way around the path, and you’ll eventually come to the Nornir Chest naturally. To destroy the seals, you’ll need to clear out the growth found here, as well as use the Winds of Hel to select the correct runes.

Note: To select the runes on the pillars around the area, activate each pillar with the Winds of Hel and let the runes rotate. When the rune you want appears, remove the Winds of Hel from the node to another node. That final step will lock the rune into place, ultimately giving access to the Nornir Chest .

  • Seal 1: To the right of the Nornir Chest up on the highest cliff. Should show the “R” symbol.
  • Seal 2: To the right of the Nornir Chest, but on the same level as the Nornir Chest. Should show the sideways “N” symbol.
  • Seal 3: To the left of the Nornir Chest, up on the cliff. Should show the “P” symbol.

Fafnir’s Storeroom: 1 Nornir Chest

Nornir chest #1: the forest area before the storeroom (rage upgrade).

the journey chest god of war

After passing Sidnir, you’ll crawl through a cliff and exit in a forest area. As you make your way up from the crawlspace, you can find a Raven perched on a branch in the stream (on the left side, before you climb the first ledge).

Continuing forward, you’ll encounter Reavers. Defeat them and look to the right side of the area for the Nornir Chest. The seals for this chest are once again bells.

  • Bell 1: Directly above the Nornir Chest.
  • Bell 2: Up and to the right of the chest.
  • Bell 3: Above the waterfall at the far end of the area.

The reward for opening this Nornir Chest is a Horn of Bloodmead .

Helheim: 1 Nornir Chest

Nornir chest #1: after you get the “round 2” trophy (rage upgrade).

the journey chest god of war

When you return to Helheim, go straight ahead and look down. This chest is below on the right-hand side of the screen. You can’t get this one quite yet, but follow the story path for a few more minutes, and you’ll be able to nab it.

Eventually, you’ll come to a ship. But instead of boarding it and continuing your journey, follow the path. You’ll end up at the Nornir Chest.

  • Seal 1: There’s a giant block to the right of the Nornir Chest. Move it halfway out and then step into the gap to the left. The back of the block will be open and the seal will be inside.
  • Seal 2: Move the block all the way out. This seal is behind the block.
  • Seal 3: Climb the block after moving it completely out. Look to the right of the chest. The seal is on the pillar in the water.

Tyr’s Temple: 1 Nornir Chest

Nornir chest #1: behind the spiked traps in tyr’s vault (symbol of bounty).

the journey chest god of war

As you move through the story, you’ll come to Tyr’s Vault. The security here is intense and stands in your way. The main hall has three concentric rings that require you to use Hel’s Wind to get past. Each time opens a new area of challenges.

When you use Hel’s Wind on the second ring, you’ll open two doors. The one on your right will have a Nornir Chest, which is pretty hard to miss.

  • Seal 1: In the room with the wheel. Turn around from the wheel to find it nestled in the wall behind you.
  • Seal 2: Go into the room with the spiked traps coming down from the ceiling. Look on the right arm of the first trap.
  • Seal 3: Go to the Nornir Chest and turn around. The seal is in a small hole at the bottom of the first spiked contraption.

Veithurgard: 1 Nornir Chest

Nornir chest #1:  to the left of the dragon on a cliff.

the journey chest god of war

Go to the dragon tether and turn left. Continue up the path past the bridge and through the Stonehenge-like worship area. Turn right, up the steps, and right again. Climb up the small ledge and the Veithurgard Nornir Chest will be straight ahead on the cliff.

  • Seal 1: As you approach the Nornir Chest, turn right as you get to the doorway. The seal will be in the wall.
  • Seal 2: Continue past the Nornir Chest until you get to the small bridge. Turn right and the seal is nestled in the rocks.
  • Seal 3: Continue from the last seal and turn right when the path branches. Go to the end of the path, which overlooks the water. The last seal is out in the rocks.

Konunsgard: 1 Nornir Chest

Nornir chest #1: after collecting the mythic items.

The Nornir Chest at Konunsgard is by far the most intensive Nornir Chest to find in all of God of War . It requires that you complete all of the Dwarven side quests presented to you by Brok and Sindri. Then(!), you’ll still have to go through the entire area before getting to it.

However, after you’ve acquired the three mythic items you’re tasked with retrieving, you’ll come across a balcony on your path back. The Nornir Chest will be there. To activate the seals, you’ll need the Winds of Hel and quick reflexes.

  • Activate the blank rune with the Winds of Hel
  • Remove the winds when the rune is still blank to activate it
  • Spin the other bell with the Winds of Hel
  • Hit the stationary bell
  • Throw the ax to hit the other two bells

Performing all of those steps should open the Nornir Chest for you. Finish the quest and get the Like Oil and Water trophy for completing all of Brok and Sindri’s side quests.

1. Midgard - Wild Woods (Reward: Idunn Apple)

This Nornir Chest is found very early in the game, as you hunt for deer with Atreus. You'll reach a temple, and in front of the chest is a barricade. Burst through the barricade and hit the 3 bells in the room to retrieve the chest.

2. Midgard - The River Pass (Reward: Idunn Apple)

After killing a revenant for the first time, you'll be presented with another Nornir chest after encountering a branching path. All you need to do is go behind the chest to locate the first rune, and then locate two other runes just past the bridge.

One is to the left of the bridge entrance, and the next is past a gate a little bit further from the bridge, but you should be able to hit it with the Leviathan Axe.

3. Midgard - The River Pass (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

As if the spike chamber wasn't stressful enough, there is also a Nornir chest in there. Before leaving after passing through the majority of the puzzle, turn around to find a ledgem where you'll be able to jump and find this Nornir Chest.

The first rune is found by raising the platform as you are on it, the next is on the roof of the arena, and the last is through a cave attached to the roof, just don't poke yourself on any of the spikes and a Horn of Blood Mead will be yours.

4. Midgard - The River Pass (Reward: Idunn Apple)

After defeating the Troll Brenna Dauoi in The River Pass, you'll be able to find another Nornir Chest in the arena where you fought it. All three runes are in the area, and you'll find two of the bells to the left and right of the chest, with the last one closer to the main arena where you fought it. Just ring all of these in the time limit and you'll be grand! Simple!

5. Midgard - Witch's House (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

After getting access to the Witch's House again and obtaining Atreus' new shock bow, you'll be able to get for another Nornir Chest. On your way back during the journey objective underneath the Witch's house, just shoot Atreus' Light Arrow to create 3 bridges, then loop around the side of the cave to gain access to it.

The first rune can be accessed by going forward past two light bridges away from the Nornir Chest, and then the second can be found to the left of the elevator, slightly up the well. For the third, go back to the chest, look behind you to get a bomb, throw it at the platform in opposite the chest, and head inside to see the last one in plain sight.

the journey chest god of war

6. Midgard - Lookout Tower (Reward: Idunn Apple)

This Nornir Chest can be found just by following a boat docking marker on the map near Lookout Tower. You'll see 3 bells surrounded by spikes, in order to lower the spikes, you'll need to throw the Leviathan Axe at a post, which lowers the spikes for a short amount of time. Facing the chest, you'll want to recall the Axe ASAP, then throw it at the furthermost bell on the left.

Following this, throw the Axe again at the post with the gears, and then quickly throw it at the two other bells. It's possible to do this all in one run, but the second lowering of the spikes gives you a little more wiggle room.

the journey chest god of war

7. Midgard - Foothills (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

Located near to Sindri in the Foothills before the mountain, you'll be able to find this Nornir chest just by going south west and following a patch to encounter yet another Nornir Chest.

This is a little bit different, as you will need to match 3 spinning posts to the markers on the chest. You can find one just behind the chest, another just by going to the foot of the small incline to get to the chest, and another just by going forward and to the left. However, this one is covered in gas, which you can freeze to reveal the rune on the post.

the journey chest god of war

8. Midgard - Tyr's Temple (Reward: Idunn Apple)

Once you get to a room containing the second post with the Winds of Hel, you'll find a big spiky hallway, with a Nornir Chest at the end. Look directly behind you in order to find the first rune.

Head back and hug left of the sawblades in order to find the second rune. The final rune is across from the wheel mechanism where the trap falls from. On the right side of the block you'll be able to find the final rune and get an Idunn Apple.

the journey chest god of war

9. Midgard - Fafnir's Storeroom (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

Fafnir's Storeroom is relatively easy to get to, and can be done whilst completing the side quest Fafnir's Hoard. Head Northwest while in the Lake of Nine and you should be able to find the Nornir Chest after meeting Sindri, heading to the forest area and hugging the right side of the map, after you've cleared out the enemies, just

10. Midgard - The Mountain (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

Inside the Mountain, you will start to see runes appear in a room, in addition to a Light Crystal behind some wood. Throw the Leviathan Axe to get access to the light crystal to activate the bridge to the chest.

Afterwards, you'll find the runes (B, N, R) Painted on the walls. You don't have to time this one, instead align the posts to the symbols. You can find one in the entrance to the cavern before the ledge, another next to the light bridge, and another high up on the right of the cavern near the entrance.

the journey chest god of war

11. Midgard - The Mountain (Reward: Idunn Apple)

On your trek up the mountain after the meeting Sindri and helping him with a rather large predicament, you'll find your way up the mountain again, you can't miss this Chest- two of the runes are in the same room as the Jotnar Shrine just before you reach the chest- use your swanky new electrical arrows and shatter bomb to get access to it.

You'll find another Runes here, with the second on the upper level of the bridge- just raise it and it's on the right as you get off. The final one is a bit harder to find. Lower the bridge again and you will find it amongst rubble near the end of the bridge on the right once more.

the journey chest god of war

12. Midgard - Light Elf Outpost (Reward: Idunn Apple)

Getting to this chest can be a bit of a pain- but first off all ensure you're at a point in the story where you're able to once again lower the water in the Lake of Nine and proceed to just west of Helheim tower.

Once there, you'll need to break the rune just past the chest, and follow and solve the simple Light Bridge puzzle around the perimeter of the island, one of the rune's is on the edge of a gate, with another being embedded into it. Getting to this chest is the hard part, but solving it is easy.

the journey chest god of war

13. Midgard - The Witch's House (Reward: Idunn Apple)

This Nornir Chest is a lot of busywork, to put it lightly. First, ensure you have got the Winds of Hel, then go up outside the Witch's House and to the left until you find a pile of rubble. Go behind the rubble and take the Winds of Hel, then you want to transfer it back over to the front side. Follow the prompts and rebuild the structure.

Take the legendary chest, if you want. Then you want to go back and up the chain that leads to another small hill. Go to the top of this, look at the newly rebuilt structure and extract the winds once more, turn around and go back and insert it to the post halfway down. Now, you'll see a post with 2 Runes, and another that shifts along the side of where you inserted the Winds.

The top runes have to be "B" pointing right, and "B" pointing up. The rune in the side of the Winds must be timed as "B" pointing up. Then, extract the Winds, head down to the bottom where the chest is, insert the Winds and the reward will be yours.

the journey chest god of war

14. Midgard- Veithurgard (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

This chest is an easy one to spot, and is left of the massive Dragon. However, the seals are a bit harder to find. One is near the big ruins, the next is next to the ledges near the water, and the last one is right of the chest. This one is super-simple, so don't miss it!

the journey chest god of war

15. Midgard - Konunsgard (Reward: Symbol of Bounty)

Konunsgard is locked behind the completion of all of Brok and Sindri's quests, so the first thing you'll need to do is go through all of that! Once unlocked, collect the 3 mythical items that they ask for, and head towards the two Dwarves and you'll find a doorway leading to a balcony containing this Nornir Chest.

For the runes, activate the winds of Hel on a the blank rune to pull it out before the rune appears. Afterwards, insert the winds of hel on the other bell to spin it. Afterwards, use the axe to ring the remaining bells. Voila! Timing is tight, so be sure to practice this one!

Cover image for YouTube video

16. Midgard - Cliffs of the Raven (Reward: Symbol of Fervour)

This one requires the Winds of Hel, so make sure you have that before heading towards the Cliffs of Raven. The Chest is located pretty centrally in the area, so take the winds over from near the docks, transfer it over to the big gate. Then, take the winds over to the rune poles and match the signs to the chest and then you'll manage to unlock it in no time, it just requires knowledge of where to put Hel's Wind and matching the Runes!

the journey chest god of war

1. Alfheim - Light Elf Sanctuary (Reward: Idunn Apple)

This can be a bit of a tricky one to find. Once you get to the main body of water in Alfheim, you'll want to stick to the right until you loop around and arrive at the Light Elf Sanctuary. After this, you'll be bombarded by enemies. Clear them out and head towards the gate in order to get to a gate, where you'll have to time a jump across the bridge before encountering more enemies. Head to the right and you'll find the Nornir Chest.

There are 8 Inactive Bells that you'll need to hit, with 3 of them actually holding the runes that you want. In a clock-style position with the chest in the middle, you'll want to hit the runes as follows, 6, 11 and 3.

2. Alfheim (Reward: Idunn Apple)

This Nornir Chest appears after you enter Alfheim and start to lower the platforms in the main rooms. Freeze a gear in place while locking down the gear, then hit the middle rune, afterwards- hit the rune behind you, then the one in front and the Apple will be yours!

3. Alfheim (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

On the approach to the glowing blue door, take a left away from Sindri on the right and you'll find a Nornir Chest. First throw the Leviathan axe through the two veins that stick the gate to the chest together, and you'll be able to find all 3 runes, these are pretty easy to spot and are a matter of timing.

4. Alfheim (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

First of all, proceed to the point in the story where you are able to unlock Light Arrows. Once you've defeated the main boss in Alfheim, you'll get to a door where you'll find a Nornir Chest after clearing out the enemies in the area.

Facing away from the door, go right and up the platforms in order to hit the bells in quick succession. You may need to use the quick turn in order to hit the rune behind you. The timing is tight and requires some practice!

1. Helheim (Reward: Horn of Blood Mead)

During the 'Escape from Helheim' quest, you'll want to get this chest just before you get back to the boat, heading to the left of the dock. Grab the block and push it into the hole to create a platform to the area.

Set the brambles alight with the Blades of Chaos to free a second Block in order to access another Rune. The second Rune is opposite the second block, and the last one will require you to look up and push a block to access it.

Midgard Nornir Chests

Alfheim nornir chests, helheim nornir chests.

Opening God of War's Nornir chests is a sure-fire way to find an Idunn Apple and Horn of Blood Mead, which will improve your health and rage, respectively. Without these items, you'll find God of War very difficult, so you'll want to seek out these chests as soon as you can. Several Nornir chests can be found in Midgard and a few more in Alfheim and Helheim. So, let's get started and find you some chests.

God of War: Nornir Chest locations

To unlock Nornir chests, you'll need to find seals and smash them with your axe. There are runes on each chest and there will be seals hidden around the area near the chest. You don't need to hit them in order, but you do need to smash them all to open the chest.

Some will be in awkward, high places and others in plain sight, so keep your eyes peeled for a bluish glow. You'll also have a time limit to hit the runes, so study the area first before you shoot them.

God of War Nornir chests and where to find every sealed chest

Locations and solution to all sealed God of War Nornir chests

God of War Nornir chest

Midgard Nornir Chests

Alfheim nornir chests, helheim nornir chests.

God of War Nornir chests are a welcome sight on your long adventure, as these rare treasure chests that are often hidden away will supply you with special stat-boosting items like Idunn Apples and Horns of Blood Mead, if you can get them open. You see, finding these chests is only half of the battle in God of War , as you then have to complete a puzzle to reveal their contents – often involving hitting bells or pots with your axe within a short timeframe.

It's entirely worth the effort of tracking down these God of War Nornir chests, as the level up items you collect from them will make Kratos extremely powerful, which is a useful trait to have when fighting against epic monsters and the gods themselves. If this sounds like a task you're ready to take on then we've got all of the Nornir chest locations listed for you below, along with solutions to the puzzles so you can crack open every Nornir chest in God of War.

Check out our video below for all of the God of War Nornir chest locations:

So here are the locations and solutions for all 22 God of War Nornir chests, but be warned there are story, power, and weapon spoilers ahead. Below is the written guide to help you, complete with video time codes for each section, but I'd recommend watching the video above for visual cues too.

God of War - Midgard map

There are a total of 17 Nornir Chests in Midgard, spread across every area of the map.

God of War - Wildwoods map

VIDEO: 00.52 - 1.40

1. The first Nornir chest serves as a nice introduction to how exactly these sealed chests work and you’ll find it in the very first area of the game, Wildwoods. You’ll reach a circular stone structure with various paths coming off of it. Take the one to the right, smash down the wooden barricade, and there’s the chest. All three of the seals are located in the same room: one directly next to the chest on the right, another in the back corner to the left of the door, and the third in the tomb on the wall left of the chest itself.

The River Pass

God of War - The River Pass map

Next up, it’s the the River Pass, which is the second area you’ll come to on your story.

VIDEO: 1.40 - 5.33

1. As you make your way through the fortified part of the map near your home, you’ll come across another Nornir chest just by following the journey’s path, it’s pretty hard to miss. However, the seals are fairly well hidden. There’s one up in the darkness to the left of the chest; another perched on the cliffs behind you and to the left, and the third is the trickiest. It’s actually on the other side of the bridge, so drop both halves and it’s embedded in a rock on the other side.

2. It’s hard to forget the River Pass’s series of spike traps, especially because it hides away the solution to a Nornir treasure. The chest itself is easy to spot,  but the runes very much less so. The best way to tackle it is to make your way through the puzzle and then drop the central spike panel so you can run along its wooden top as you come back on yourself.  The first rune is in the cave on the opposite side, the second is behind the central platform and only visible when it’s dropped. The third is a little trickier. Stand on the central platform and then raise it up an axe hit or two, then head over to hit the rune that’s hidden behind the wooden plank on the other side.

3. After you’ve fought your very first giant troll, take a moment to spot the Nornir chest that’s lurking in the same battle arena. For this one you need to hit all three rune bells in quick succession to unlock the chest. There’s one directly behind the chest, another to the left and the third is directly on the other side of the arena. I recommend going for the third first and then the last two.

4. There’s a Nornir chest in the basement of the Lower Levels of the Witch’s Cave, that you won’t be able to solve until you’ve got the Blades of Chaos. When you’ve got them, you’ll be able to access every one of the runes required to unlock it. There’s one in the wall in the well you climb to reach the Witch’s Wood again. Another nestled underneath the bridge leading to the Witch’s Cave door.  And the third is in the small room behind the exploding red vines.

5. This one’s a little bit more complicated and not even solvable until you’ve got the winds of hell at your fingertips. The chest is up on the ledge opposite the turtle’s head in the Witch’s Woods. But you’ll actually need to start down by the turtle at the ruins. On the right hand side is the wind source, so take it and move it over to the left hand side of the ruins. Then head back up to the ledge where the chest is and go all the way to the end. Grab the wind from the ruins and move it to the fallen rune pillar back towards the chest, at which point the runes will spin. If you want to check which runes you need to hit, put the wind on the holding point behind the chest. It’s then just a case of matching the runes on the wind turbine and the axe-powered spinner to the ones on the chest.

The Lake of Nine

God of War - Lake of Nine map

The next seven Nornir chests are all hidden in areas around the Lake of Nine, although some you won’t be able to access until the level of the water has dropped, you have more powers, or different weapons.

Veithurgard

God of War - Veithurgard map

VIDEO: 5.45 - 6.22

1. The chest in Veithurgard is over on the left of the raised area and fairly hard to miss. The first seal is almost behind the chest, accessible from the other side of the valley. The second is just to the left, behind the Stonehenge-like ruins. And the third is in the room just to the right of the chest on the tiny stone ledge.

Light Elf Outpost

God of War - Light Elf Outpost map

VIDEO: 6.22 - 6.58

1. You see the chest as soon as you pull up at the Light Elf Outpost, but the runes are a little more hidden. The first seal is on the ledge of the ruins poking out of the water to one side of the island. There’s another at the bottom of the slope near the blue crystal socket. And the last is near the two chains leading down to the dock, near the edge of those watery ruins again. Then the Light Elves’ Nornir chest is yours.

God of War - Konunsgard map

VIDEO: 6.58 - 7.33

1. Solving the chest at the top of the giant door in Konunsgard is easier than it looks. You don’t actually need to find the third seal. Take the wind from the source by the chest and put it in the left hand orb. Hit both sides of the rotating rune ball so they ring (which is as tricky as it looks), and then hit the rune to the right of the door to unlock the chest.

Forgotten Caverns

God of War - Forgotten Caverns map

VIDEO: 7.33 - 7.58

1. This one’s a bit different, but it’s easy to find right there by the dock. The Forgotten Caverns’ Nornir chest is more about timing than finding the runes, because all three are right next to the chest. All you’ve got to do is hit all three rune bells as they spin and before they stop ringing.

Fafnir’s Storeroom

God of War - Fafnir's Storeroom guide

VIDEO: 7.58 - 8.27

1. In the lush open space just outside Fafnir’s actual storeroom, there’s a Nornir chest, and all three seals are very nearby, but you’ll need to ring them all in quick succession. There are two just behind the chest and the last one is above the waterfall just to your left. Go waterfall first and the other two are easy pickings.

Lookout Tower

God of War - Lookout Tower map

VIDEO: 8.27 - 8.48

1. Pull up to the boat dock at the Lookout Tower and the Nornir chest is right there, waiting to be opened. But first you’ll need to lower the spikes. Hit the panel above the chest to spin it and retract the pointy bits, and then hit all three visible runes in quick succession.

Cliffs of the Raven

God of War - Cliff of the Raven map

VIDEO: 8.48 - 11.01

1. This one requires a bit of manoeuvring, some running and a lot of wind. Yay! It goes without saying that you’ll need to have the winds of hell before you can attempt this one. But when you do the Nornir chest is in the centre of the area. But first, you need the wind. Go to the big gate  near the dock, drop hit and use your axe to break the plants inside in one shot. Then go around the other side of the gate through the island to grab the wind, and then place it in the holding orb to the left by the other big gate. Go back up to the chest itself and leap over to the furthest platform on the left where you’ll see your wind.

Move the wind to the rune spinner on the previous platform, and line it up with one of the runes on the chest. Then put the wind on the orb in the centre of this area. Clamber up to the chest again, and take the wind from the centre the rune spinner on the same level as the chest until it matches the rune on the box, then put the wind back in the centre again.

Jump back across the platforms to the left of the chest, and climb to the topmost one. Leap across the gap, grab your wind and fling it into the rune spinner on that level, again waiting until the runes align before returning the wind to the centre. Then just go and claim your prize.

God of War - Foothills map

After you’ve visited the Lake of Nine for the first time, you’ll head into the Foothills at the bottom of the mountain.

VIDEO: 11.01 - 11.50

1. In the area in front of Sindri’s shop in the Foothills, there’s a chest up the path and to the right. The first spinning rune statue is right behind the chest. The second is back down the path and off to the left. And the third is just to the right again, behind a big log and protected by the poison mist. You can hit the turbines first, but you’ll need to freeze the mist to see what rune it’s on. And then the treasure is yours.

The Mountain

God of War - The Mountain map

Of course, once you’re ready you’ll be able to head into the mountain itself, where two Nornir chests are hiding.

VIDEO: 11.50 - 13.59

1. In the area of the Mountain you reach after solving the stag statue riddle, there’s the first Mountain Nornir chest. The spinning rune seals are dotted all around the area though. The chest itself is up in a room over at left of the area, accessible only via triggering the blue pathways. You’ll need to trigger the blue light behind the chest though, as that reveals the rune combination needed to unlock the chest, which is painted in what looks like blood on the wall behind. There’s one rune along the path out the door to the right of the chest rune. The second is visible from the bridge there too. And the third is just outside the entrance to the chest room.

2. The second mountain chest is just after the mini lift puzzle with the bucket full of red explosives - post the big dragon fight. The chest is very easy to spot, but as usual the runes are a little more hidden. The first is across the bridge nestled in a rocky alcove to the right. The second is on the upper level, accessible by raising the bridge, and freezing the mechanism.  Then it’s just on the shelf at the top. The third is back on the chest level, in the room to the left with the shrine in it.

Tyr's Vault

God of War - Tyr's Temple map

The final chest in Midgard is hiding in the bottom of Tyr’s Vault, which you’ll reach in the latter part of the God of War story.

VIDEO: 14.00 - 14.50

1. The solution to this Nornir chest isn’t tricky, it’s just well hidden. Down in the blue depths of Tyr’s Vault is a Nornir chest, hidden behind the spike traps to the left of the first room. One of the runes is hiding amongst all the treasure in the room that leads to the chest. There’s another in the struts holding up the spike traps to the left of the second room - the one opposite the Tyr’s Vault entrance. And just in case you miss it, there’s a seal hidden in the back of the second spike trap on your way back out from the chest.

God of War - Alfheim map

The realm of Alfheim is home to four Nornir chests, both inside the Temple of Light and in the surrounding area.

VIDEO: 14.51 - 17.58

1. Head to Alfheim’s Light Elf Sanctuary and inside you’ll find a circular, almost religious-looking structure, with a Nornir chest at the centre. Around the structure hang the not three, but eight bells, including the one on the floor. You need to work out which ones open the chest, but we’re here to help. Going from left to right, it’s numbers 3, 5 and 8.

2. Down the slope to the left hand side of the door to the Temple of Light, there’s a Nornir chest behind a door blocked by two vines you’ll need to hit with one axe throw. Then you’ll need to hit all three rune bells quickly. There’s one behind the chest, and two in the little courtyard outside. Hit the two outside first, and then head in for the third and the prize.

3. Just inside the door to the Temple of Light is another Nornir chest. Now comes the precision and the speed requirements. There are three awkwardly positioned runes to hit, quickly. One’s behind the chest, another through the window on the left of the platform and the third in the rocks above the platforms you climbed up to get here. Now comes the tricky part, getting all three without any of them stopping ringing. I had the best luck by standing behind the trellis to the right of the chest, hitting window bell, then chest bell and then quickly flipping to the stone bell.

4. Inside the ringed temple trench, inside the actual temple of light right at the bottom. there’s a pesky Nornir chest offset in the left alcove. If you drop the nearby platforms down all the way using the wheel and do a quick 180, there’s one seal that emerges behind you. Getting the other two requires lowering the platform all the way down again, standing in the middle, and then raising just the outer levels before freezing the cog again. Both remaining runes are inside the seams of the raised platforms. Sneaky. Then just raise the platforms all the way again to get your prize.

God of War - Helheim map

The last of the Nornir chests is hidden in the realm of Helheim, but thankfully there’s just the one here, but you’ll have to do this as you do the later parts of the story. So if you want all 22 chests for 100% completion, don’t forget to do this one.

VIDEO: 17.58 - end

1. When you return to Helheim later with Atreus, you’ll find a Nornir chest just before you jump on the ghost ship, in the area left of the boat ramp. Push the block into the gap to access it, and the chest is directly in front of you.  Use your blades on the branches to your right to free the next block and then pull it out a little way. There’s a rune through the gap to the left of the block, perched on the stones. There’s another on the opposite side of the block you’ve pulled. The third though, is a little higher up. Pull the block all the way in line with the ledge to the right of the chest and climb up. Reward yourself with the wooden chest and then smash the last rune, which is perched on the pillar in the water to your right. Then go down and open that pesky chest.

God of War: The Journey - A New Destination

Put some new tricks to work while completing A New Destination in God of War.

Bill Lavoy

After some long chapters in God of War , A New Destination is a bit shorter and more straightforward. It will still take some time, and there are puzzles and riddles to solve, but it’s a small break from the grind to this point in the game. As always, this walkthrough will focus on story progress — collectibles for God of War can be found in separate guides.

Take Mimir’s Head to the Witch

Head down the mountain, stopping to loot the chest just a short distance down the steps. Further down the steps and on the left is another chest tucked in a corner. This one contains some Hacksilver, which is always nice to find. In the only other direction Kratos and Atreus can move there is a Mystic Gateway, which will allow travel directly back to Brok’s Shop. There is no other option here, so take the Mystic Gateway.

Return to the Witch’s Cave

the journey chest god of war

Leave Brok’s Shop and take the stairs down the docked boat. The HUD should show a waypoint at the top that will direct Kratos and Atreus directly to the cave they seek. Paddle through the cave until reaching the dock, then get out of the boat and have Atreus destroy the Shatter Crystal sitting on the World Tree Sap obstacle using his Shock Arrows. Take the lift into the main part of the cave.

There is a lot that Kratos and Atreus can do in this cave now that they can use Light Arrows and Shock Arrows, but that won’t be covered in the walkthrough. Nornir chests , collectibles and  Hidden Chambers are all covered in their own guides.

At the top of the lift, take note of the World Tree Sap obstacle blocking the door. Have Atreus use a Shock Arrow on the Shatter Crystal, then climb up the well to reach the outside. There’s plenty to out here, too, but progressing the story is as simple as walking through the witch’s front door.

Return to the Boat

the journey chest god of war

Head back through the Witch’s Cave and take all the time required to clean up any outstanding tasks, then head down to the boat. This trip should be straightforward by now, and there shouldn’t be any foes spawning in to slow progress.

Go to the Serpent’s Horn

Guide the boat all the way back to where Brok’s Shop is, which is where Kratos and Atreus left when they headed for the cave. This time, though, go to the platform in the middle of the bridge and interact with the lever. This will raise the platform up, allowing Kratos to Speak to the World Serpent and complete the final objective of this quest.

That will do it for A New Destination. The next story chapter is The Magic Chisel , but all of our content can be found at the God of War walkthrough and guide .
