I don't like the idea of carrying passports anywhere where they are likely to get nicked but going ashore in countries like Italy you are required by law to have them with you. Of course if you miss your ship and you are left stranded a passport and credit card would be a life saver. So any idea what is likely to happen if the police challenge you and all you have is passport copies and the ships ID card, and possible a drivers licence,

I didn’t even realise it was law in Italy. We’ve cruised there several times and always left our passports in the safe on the ship.

I’ll not be carrying it on me this time either around the Mediterranean although we are not stopping in Italy. A screenshot is all that I will have.

I too have been to Italy cruising and not carried my passport ashore....I do carry photo copies of the photo information page.

I know some countries ask you carry photo ID so your driving licence should suffice.

passports for msc cruises

If we are required to have them ashore we have a security pouch we wear under our clothes or security pocket s in our Tilley Pants

After the officials see them we put them away

(but many do not read those) ??

On our transatlantic repositioning from Miami to Barcelona, the ship kept the passports until the end. Unless that is the case, I always take mine. It seems that almost every week there is a story about someone stranded in a foreign country w/o their passprt

I have been on holiday in Italy a few times recently .... both EU and non EU and I have never carried a passport on my person. Having said that I have never been stopped by the police nor have i given them a reason to 'check me out'.

Passports for pax who miss sailing are usually handed over to the shipping line's port agent. That's why that contact info is provided.

Definition of VALID Passport on MSC

Cool Cruiser

Hello all! I just booked my first sailing on MSC and it was kind of a last-minute holiday-driven idea; I booked the day before yesterday and the ship sails on 2/2 out of Miami (getting to the port will be an adventure on Super Bowl Sunday!) Mpassport expires in less than six months--it expires in mid-March, four weeks after I disembark. I was aware of this when I booked the sailing. My plan was to renew my passport BEFORE sailing, but that's kinda dicey as renewing requires mailing it off and then I have no control over when it returns. I am prepared to pay to expedite it, but even then it could be four weeks and with the holiday next week that's cutting it REALLY close.

So I went onto the MSC site and this is what I found. My question follows.

  • Valid Passport
  • Passport Card
  • Enhanced Driver's License
  • Trusted Traveler Program Card (NEXUS, SNETRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form 1-872)
  • Enhanced Tribal Card
  • Trusted Traveler Program Card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • Valid Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Government Issued Birth Certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • Naturalization Certificate
  • Canadian Citizenship Card

My question: what defines VALID passport in this case? Is that any non-expired passport? Because I know that some airlines won't let you fly if your passport expires in 6 months or less. And I know there's a three-month rule for some countries. But I also know that cruising is different, as you're not really visiting that country--you are considered "in transit".

So I'm kinda stumped as to which would be the safer bet:

A. renewing my passport TODAY (well, tomorrow) and hoping it gets returned to me in less than 4 weeks.

B. sailing with the passport I have--which is considered not-expired for the duration of the sailing--and then renewing when I return home, as I do not currently have any international travel planned in the following 6-week period.

Has anyone sailed on MSC with a passport that expires soon-ish? Any issues?  I also realize I can try to find my birth certificate, but I'm not sure where it is  or how long it would take to order a replacement.

Thanks in advance for answering my complicated question. And remember folks--booking a last minute cruise is all well and good until you realize that problems like this exist! Hahahahahahaha!

I was able to get a certified copy of my birth certificate FedExed to me overnight when I was moving and stupidly left my passport and certified copy of my birth certificate in the filing cabinet which was in the custody of the movers.  The county involved was in a major metropolitan area, all counties may not offer this service.

I'm just off MSC with a passport which expires in March, so I had less than the allegedly 6 required months of validity.  Nobody even batted an eyelash.  It was a closed-loop Caribbean cruise.  And I took one of my certified copies of my birth certificate along just in case.

You have a much shorter expiration period than I had.  So if you don't know where your certified copy of your birth certificate is, I think it might be worth it for peace of mind to pay for expedited passport renewal.  Expedited renewal should not take 4 weeks.

I will start by looking for my actual birth certificate. I know it's around here somewhere, but we recently moved and well...you know how it goes!  Thanks for sharing your experience with MSC and an expiring-in-March passport!

Just for your info....

We mailed (via track able USPS) our old Passports to Philly on 11/22/19.

We received our new Passports today.

This was a regular renewal NOT an expedited one.

I'm pretty pleased with that turn around!

That is reassuring!  I also just learned that you can do the whole process at FedEx and pay a lot of money for them to expedite it. I may go with that option.  Thanks!

Go to the US Post office.  They can take your photo and expedite as well.  Not all post offices offer passport service.  Check the USPS site for your closest office and call to make an appointment.  This is a slow time, so you should not have any issues getting it back on time.  You are also able to see the progress of your passport renewal online.

Just looked that up....that's a great option that I did NOT know existed!! Fortunately I'm good until 2029!

In our area we learned that the best option for the initial passport process is NOT our Post Office.  We took a 30 mile drive over the mountains to the Buena Vista, VA Circuit Court where we had a great experience.  We literally had the whole office helping our children get their passports.  Check this website to check for all the locations around you.

I work in downtown Washington, DC and there's a passport office located at roughly 19th and F Sts, NW. I believe they offer same-day passport renewal so if it's worth your while, you could come to DC and have it done in a day.

They do offer that service.  However, you typically must show travel documents departing within a few days.  I have had clients get their passports in one day when they have an emergency.

Thanks, all! My goal is to make this as quick and painless as possible. I know I COULD drive down to Philly (between an hour and 2.5 hours away depending upon traffic) to get it done same day, but yes I would need to be departing in 2 weeks and no, I don't have the better part of a day to get that done. So definitely no to a six hour round trip drive to DC.  I'm going to first try to find my birth certificate; if I can find that, I'll just take that and my not-yet-expired passport, as recommended by HappyCruiser, above. If not, I guess I'll be paying FedEx to expedite it.  What a silly window I've booked myself into!

Is your Pennsylvania drivers license compliant with the Feds' latest rules?  Does it have a star on it?  Some states are not in compliance.  My Florida one works fine, as I had to show my passport to get it.  If you're going the birth certificate route, you must have two acceptable forms of ID.

Hope you will come back and let us know whether whatever you did worked.  Good luck!  And happy cruising!

Sadly I do not yet have my real ID license, so no--that won't work. I think I'm just going to go with taking my existing passport. The MSC site clearly states "valid passport". And my passport is valid for a month after I return. I feel that's a safer bet than sending it away right now and then possibly not getting it back.

3,000+ Club

We sail B2B starting with same sailing you are..

My 2 cents-- renew the passport now - express service.

You can do the forms online.

You MUST sign it in black ink --

Old passport, forms + check.

IF you don't do this--be sure to put a reminder on your calendar and send it off for renewal the week you get back... just so you have it done for your next trip

I had looked at our passports during the summer and knew we needed to renew them after a B2B in Sept.

So sent them off the week after we got back as ours expired in April 2020

They were back in about 2 weeks.

If I was you and doing it today- I'd send them express service.  Put Jan 20 or so as your departure date

My 2 cents (Canadian 2 cents at that)....

This is a return trip which I assume is a week.  And you are flying from PA to FL which means you don't even have to show the passport - so the 6 months prior should be irrelevant.

Nowhere does it state you require 6 months prior to expiration on your passport.

A valid passport is one that is not expired.  For example, if you wanted to drive to Canada today, as long as your plan was to return before March, you would be entering with a valid passport.

You may consider looking at the countries you are visiting on the itinerary and see what their regulations are for entry for cruise visitors, but given that my cruise last year was little more than a cursory glance to see I looked a little like the photo on the page,  and many didn't even have their passport at port, I am not sure I understand the concern.

But, of course, if you can get it returned expedited service and that will put your mind at rest and most likely be worth the cost.

In the meantime, search up your birth certificate, as that is a valuable document regardless of cruising.

Hey neighbor! My mom and I went there a few years ago when her birth certificate wasn't accepted for a trip to Jamaica, they were very helpful.

Did it have the required raised seal?  Photocopies are not acceptable.

5 minutes ago, jkgourmet said:   Did it have the required raised seal?  Photocopies are not acceptable.

You need a valid US passport to enter Jamaica.  Cruise ships had lots of clout in Washington and got the exemption for those departing and returning to a US Port to use the alternative id.

Personally, I'd be getting an expedited copy of a new passport or a copy of my birth certificate with a raised seal.  You'll need one or the other to get your Real ID, which you'll need to do by October, 2020.

50 minutes ago, jkgourmet said:   Did it have the required raised seal?  Photocopies are not acceptable.

I can't remember, but the issue ended up being that it was a Puerto Rican birth certificate and its authenticity was questioned. That's all been resolved now and she has her passport so we're good to go.

Apply early for your   passport , or make sure your current one will be valid at least six months beyond your travel dates and has two or more blank pages.. Your cruise company may also require you to have a passport even if U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) does not.

closed loop Caribbean cruises do not require 6 months of passport validity.

We have traveled with a US passport which expired 1 day prior to disembarkation (no problems whatsoever), 1 month after disembarkation, and 3 months after disembarkation - all on closed-loop cruises out of FL.

Great. That's what I'm finding online, I just needed a real person to tell me it was true.  I also found my birth certificate, so I'll take that as well.  Also I did set a calendar alert to renew my passport the day I return!

Cruise passport requirements: what you need to know.

' src=

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • Passport is required for cruises departing from Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, Caribbean islands, Canadian homeports, and for sailing from one U.S. homeport and disembarking at a different one.
  • Closed-loop sailings from U.S. homeports, defined as roundtrip from the same U.S. homeport and only visiting ports in the Western Hemisphere, do not require a passport.
  • Government-issued photo ID and proof of citizenship can be used if no passport is available, but it is recommended to cruise with a passport for emergencies and during the pandemic.
  • Passports for minors are valid for 5 years and some ports on closed-loop itineraries may still require passports for entry.

Passports are required for all travelers, including citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the U.S. by air, land or sea .

There are a few notable exceptions pertaining to land and sea border crossings:

  • U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization and a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruises that begin in one U.S. port and end in another.
  • Children under the age of 16 who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings. In lieu of a passport, children are able to use a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization as proof of citizenship for entry into the U.S. by land or by sea. Children entering or re-entering the U.S. by air are required to have a valid passport.
  • A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Passports are required for cruise travel to all International destinations not mentioned above, and for cruises that involve air travel that begins or ends outside of the U.S. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel.

Vacations To Go has partnered with CIBT, the largest and most well-established travel visa and passport company in the world, to offer you a fast, easy and reliable way to obtain a passport or other document for travel anywhere in the world. For information about obtaining a passport or passport card for the first time, or about renewing a passport or passport card, click here to visit the CIBT Web site.

Legal U.S. Residents (Non-Citizens)

Legal permanent residents of the U.S. must have a valid passport from their country of citizenship and a valid Alien Registration Card (Green Card) to enter or re-enter the U.S.

Non-U.S., Non-Canada Citizens

The following countries participate in a visa waiver program with the U.S., and citizens of these countries must have a machine-readable passport for entry into the U.S.:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

Citizens of the countries listed above who do not possess machine-readable passports, and citizens of countries not listed above must present a valid passport and a valid United States visa upon entry into the U.S. For those whose travel plans include multiple entries into the U.S., such as a cruise that begins and ends in a U.S. port, a multiple-entry visa is required.

All travelers, including U.S. and Canada citizens , are responsible for verifying visa requirements with consular officials, and obtaining visas where required, for every country visited during their trip, including countries visited via connecting flights.

Always check with your Vacations To Go cruise counselor at the time of booking to verify the documentation requirements for your vacation.

The ultimate guide to MSC Cruises ships and itineraries

Gene Sloan

MSC Cruises may be the biggest cruise line you've never heard of — assuming you're an American.

While the Switzerland-based company is the third-biggest cruise line in the world, it has far less name recognition among Americans than big U.S.-based lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line . That's because, until recently, MSC Cruises mostly catered to Europeans. A large percentage of its customers came from countries such as Italy, Germany, France and Spain.

That's all changing now — and in a big way.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

As it expands its fleet at a rapid pace , MSC Cruises is massively building its footprint in North America in an effort to woo more Americans. As recently as 2017, the line only had a single vessel based in North America. Now it's up to three ships sailing out of U.S. ports, and by the end of 2023, that number will have shot up to five.

All the North America-based ships are marketed heavily to Americans, and the line has tailored some of the features and activities on the vessels to a North American crowd.

Like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises has been building big resortlike vessels that offer every sort of amusement known to humans, from giant water parks to race car simulators. It currently operates eight of the 20 biggest cruise ships in the world — one of which (MSC Meraviglia) now calls North America home with year-round sailings out of New York City.

3 things TPG loves about MSC Cruises

  • Its affordability
  • The incredible array of activities on its ships
  • The status match it offers with its loyalty program

What we could do without

  • Onboard announcements in five languages (on overseas sailings)

The MSC Cruises fleet

MSC Cruises has grown enormously in recent years. As recently as early 2017, the line had just 12 ships in operation. But it's added new ships at a rapid pace over the past six years and now operates 22 vessels, more than any other major line besides Royal Caribbean and Carnival. It also has three more giant new ships on the way in the next few years.

If that sounds like too many ships to get your head around, note that all 22 of the vessels in operation, as well as the three on order, fall into six distinct classes . The ships within each of the classes have similar sizes and onboard attractions. If you know one ship in the class, you know them all.

Related: MSC Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

As a result of its rapid growth, MSC Cruises recently passed Norwegian to become the world's third-biggest cruise brand when measured by passenger capacity. Only Royal Caribbean and Carnival are bigger.

Not including pulldown bunks and pullout sofas, MSC Cruises' 22 ships have 77,832 berths — about 21,000 more than Norwegian's fleet. At its current pace of growth, MSC Cruises could soon pass Carnival to become the world's second-biggest line.

As noted above, the MSC Cruises fleet includes eight of the world's 20 biggest cruise vessels — MSC World Europa , MSC Euribia , MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape . Built in the last six years, these eight ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis Class vessels (the world's biggest cruise ships), but they're right up there when it comes to amenities and passenger capacity.

passports for msc cruises

The grande dame of the MSC Cruises fleet is its recently unveiled MSC World Europa. At 215,863 tons, it's the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the first of a new series of so-called World Class vessels that are nearly as big as Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships.

The next-biggest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet are its recently unveiled Meraviglia Class vessels: MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Euribia. Similar in design, these five ships aren't quite as big as MSC World Europa, but they're right up there when it comes to size, amenities and passenger capacity.

MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Euribia, which debuted in 2019, 2021 and 2023, respectively, are a tad longer than MSC Bellissima and MSC Meraviglia and are considered a subset of the class known as Meraviglia Plus. Each can hold 4,842 passengers at double occupancy (or 6,334 passengers if every last pulldown bunk and pullout sofa is filled).

The other two Meraviglia Class ships, which date to 2019 and 2017, can carry more than 5,600 passengers with every berth filled.

In addition to these five giants, MSC Cruises also operates four large Seaside Class ships. Each has a total capacity of 5,336 to 5,632 passengers.

Add those in, and MSC Cruises operates 10 of the world's 35 biggest cruise ships, plus four somewhat smaller Fantasia Class vessels that can each hold around 4,400 passengers at maximum occupancy.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Together, the 14 World, Meraviglia, Seaside and Fantasia Class vessels make up MSC Cruises' big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are considerably smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at 2,700 to 3,200 passengers.

The eight smaller ships, which in general are the line's older ships, allow MSC Cruises to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of the World Class or Meraviglia Class vessels, although even the biggest MSC Cruises ships are still designed to be able to call at most ports around the world.

Among the smallest MSC Cruises ships is the MSC Armonia.

The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of MSC Cruises fans who are willing to give up some onboard amenities in exchange for intimacy. They're usually less expensive on a per-day basis, too.

In addition to all the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big ships to start arriving later this decade, though few details have been released. MSC Group is also developing a series of small luxury vessels that'll operate under a separate brand called Explora Journeys.

Destinations and itineraries

passports for msc cruises

MSC Cruises sails almost everywhere in the world, but its heaviest presence is in Europe, where it's the biggest cruise operator.

In a typical summer, the line will deploy the vast majority of its ships in the Mediterranean or northern Europe. In recent years, the line has also kept at least a couple of ships in Florida in summer for voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. This year, the line had two ships based in Florida for summer sailings to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, plus one ship sailing out of New York City for the summer.

During winter, MSC Cruises typically will add more ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. (For winter 2023-2024, it expects to have six in the region.) It'll also typically send four or five ships to South America in winter and often deploys vessels in winter to South Africa and the Middle East.

For winter 2023-2024, it'll have one ship in South Africa. The line's Middle East deployment this year has been cut back due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Additionally, MSC Cruises often offers an around-the-world cruise in winter on a single ship.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on an MSC Cruises ship

In North America, MSC Cruises ships have generally sailed out of Miami , but the line recently added Port Canaveral and New York City as home ports, too. The line also offers cruises from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and in a major development, the line opened its first private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , in the Bahamas in 2019. It's a major stop for many MSC Cruises itineraries in the region.

In Europe, major MSC Cruises hubs include Southampton, England; Copenhagen; Kiel and Hamburg in Germany; Ancona, Venice, Genoa, Naples, Palermo, Bari and Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) in Italy; Barcelona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca in Spain; and Marseille, France.

Who sails MSC Cruises?

passports for msc cruises

MSC Cruises is increasingly known for having big, bustling megaships that'll appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. In other words, if you're the kind of person who loves staying on property at Disney World or at a giant Las Vegas resort , this could be the line for you.

The bigger MSC Cruises ships offer vacationers a ton of options for dining (some vessels have more than a dozen distinct places to eat dinner or at least grab a quick bite) or entertainment. They're lively and fun.

They also have an inordinate amount of teen- and tween-friendly attractions — everything from some of the largest waterslides at sea to sprawling amusement areas with race car simulators, flight simulators and XD cinemas (more on all this below). That makes them particularly appealing to families, including multigenerational groups. Families are a big part of MSC Cruises' business.

But it's not just families that flock to MSC Cruises.

The line's ships are designed to offer something for everyone, and they thus appeal to a wide demographic, including couples of all ages and even solo travelers (the line has added solo cabins on its newer ships and occasionally runs promotions for solo travelers). They also draw customers from a wide range of the income spectrum.

At one level, MSC Cruises ships have a for-the-masses feel. However, overlaid across many of the line's ships are high-end suites, upscale restaurants and luxury services — most notably the suites and amenities in the exclusive, upscale MSC Yacht Club areas found on some vessels (more on that later). As a result, the line draws a good number of luxury-seeking travelers.

The demographic profile of MSC Cruises ships can be markedly different depending on where the vessels are based. On Caribbean sailings out of Florida, you'll find that a large percentage of passengers are English-speaking North Americans.

MSC Cruises voyages in Europe are often heavily filled with Europeans speaking Italian, German, Spanish and French, as well as some English speakers. In Europe, the line offers onboard programming in all five of these languages (all crew members speak English no matter where the ships are sailing).

Reality check: Due to the diverse origins of passengers on European sailings, the line typically makes announcements in all five of the aforementioned languages. This can result in extraordinarily long announcements at times, which can be a distraction to some cruisers. The good news is that on sailings out of U.S. ports, only safety announcements are made in all five languages. Other announcements are in English only.

Cabins and suites

passports for msc cruises

MSC Cruises offers a wide range of accommodations on its ships. On its newest vessels, you'll find everything from relatively low-cost, windowless "interior" cabins that measure as little as 172 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to suites more than five times that size that sprawl across two decks.

Still, MSC Cruises doesn't offer the sort of truly giant suites (more than 1,000 to 2,000 square feet) you'll find on some Norwegian and Royal Caribbean ships.

passports for msc cruises

At the high end, the accommodations are aimed at affluent travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the megaship experience to being on a luxury ship, and they can be quite impressive.

The biggest suites on MSC Grandiosa, which launched in 2019, span two levels and offer around 635 square feet of interior space, plus another 237 square feet of outdoor balcony space.

passports for msc cruises

On more than half of MSC Cruises' ships, many of the top suites are part of an exclusive, keycard-accessed area called the MSC Yacht Club . Billed as an upscale "ship within a ship" and aimed at luxury travelers, the MSC Yacht Club is at the very top of vessels and comes with a private lounge, a pool, sunning areas and even its own restaurant.

Related: Everything you need to know about MSC Cruises cabins and suites

MSC Yacht Club accommodations also come with 24-hour butler service and a dedicated concierge.

passports for msc cruises

Solo cabins (called interior studios) measuring just 127 square feet can be found on the line's seven newest vessels.

Insider tip: Passengers can use the interactive TVs in cabins to browse information, find out about daily events and activities, check bills and book services. On some ships, MSC for Me interactive wristbands can open your cabin door and also allow you to book services or make contactless payments for items on board.

Restaurants and dining

passports for msc cruises

While a few of MSC Cruises' smallest ships have relatively limited dining venues, many of the line's vessels offer a wide range of choices.

On the line's recently unveiled MSC Euribia, for instance, there are nearly a dozen distinct eateries, as well as a number of bars and lounges that serve at least small bites. MSC Seashore has five specialty restaurants that feature waterfront, outdoor seating on the ship's boardwalk.

Every vessel has at least one or more main dining rooms and a casual buffet where meals are included in the fare.

For dinner in a main dining room, you must either have My Choice dining with the Aurea experience (a flexible dining option where you dine whenever you want) or classic dining (where you have a fixed table and time for dinner).

Nearly every ship also has at least one — and sometimes quite a few — extra-charge venues. Among the most common across the fleet is the American-style steakhouse Butcher's Cut, which is found on more than half the line's vessels. There also are sushi bars on more than half the line's ships, with varying names like Kaito Sushi and Galaxy Sushi.

The line's newest ships have teppanyaki restaurants, too, and passengers on MSC Cruises' Seaside Class ships, as well as MSC Meraviglia and MSC Splendida, can dine at a Mediterranean-style seafood restaurant.

Several of the line's newest vessels, including MSC Grandiosa and MSC Bellissima, also have the French cuisine-serving L'Atelier Bistrot.

Entertainment and activities

MSC Cruises offers a broad range of entertainment and activities on its ships. As noted above, the line's biggest vessels offer multiple entertainment venues, from Broadway-style theaters to spaces for circus-like performances; all manner of deck-top attractions; large casinos; and full-service spas. Plus, you'll find multiple bars, lounges and nightlife spots.

Theaters and shows

passports for msc cruises

Like other megaship lines, MSC Cruises is known for big, glitzy theater productions performed in onboard theaters that are as state-of-the-art as anything you'll find on Broadway.

On the line's newer ships, such as MSC Euribia, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Grandiosa, there are main theaters that hold nearly 1,000 people. They offer as many as six different full-scale theatrical productions during a typical voyage, with multiple showtimes for each production and a range of styles. You'll find original Broadway-style musicals, piano concerts and even operas.

Some MSC Cruises ships have high-tech, multipurpose entertainment spaces that serve as comedy clubs and karaoke bars but can also transform into music venues. Dubbed the TV Studio & Bar on some ships, these spaces also house radio and TV broadcasting equipment, and they can host games, quizzes and talent contests aired live on TV sets in cabins.

Other interior attractions and activities

passports for msc cruises

In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of MSC Cruises ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night, including a seemingly endless array of bars, lounges and nightspots.

Every MSC Cruises ship has a casino, and on the line's larger vessels, they are big operations. Le Grand Casino on MSC Grandiosa, for instance, has 164 slot machines, 12 table games (including blackjack, roulette and poker) and its own bar.

The five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels also have soaring interior mall-like spaces called Gallerias with bars, restaurants and retail shops, as does the new MSC World Europa.

Many of the Gallerias, for example, are home to an innovative chocolate bar and boutique created by well-known French patissier and chocolatier Jean-Philippe Maury.

The Gallerias on the five Meraviglia and Meraviglia Plus Class vessels — MSC Euribia, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima — are topped with one of the most stunning features found at sea: a dazzling "digital sky" made with curving LED screens that offer regular light shows during the day and evening. There's something similar on MSC World Europa.

The bigger MSC Cruises ships also have interactive game zones with such attractions as Formula One racing simulators, immersive XD cinemas, arcade games and even full-size bowling alleys.

passports for msc cruises

For something more soothing, all MSC Cruises ships include spas. These can be quite big on the larger vessels, with expansive thermal areas and a wide choice of treatments and services.

Insider tip: Passengers can get information about onboard entertainment and restaurants (and make reservations) on the interactive screens found around MSC Cruises vessels.

Top-deck attractions

passports for msc cruises

The top decks of MSC Cruises ships offer pools, hot tubs and plenty of lounge space, plus some spectacular family-focused fun zones — on the line's newest ships, at least.

On the line's Meraviglia and Seaside Class ships, top-deck amenities include sprawling back-of-the-ship water parks with multiple waterslides, ropes courses and watery play areas for the little ones.

passports for msc cruises

Some ships even have zip lines — the longest at sea.

Additionally, the main pool areas on the newest MSC Cruises ships are among the biggest and most stunning at sea. Some of the line's ships also have adults-only pools topped with glass ceilings that can be opened on warm days.

Children's programs

passports for msc cruises

MSC Cruises has some of the most extensive children's programs at sea, with dedicated clubs and activities for children as young as a couple of months old through the age of 17.

On most ships, the line offers programming for five distinct age groups.

For the very youngest cruisers, there's Baby Club, a program for babies and toddlers up to the age of 3. The line partnered with baby care brand Chicco to develop dedicated Baby Club play areas on every ship with toys, games and music and rhythm activities. You can leave your toddlers at the clubs, which have dedicated staff, or stay and play with them.

MSC Cruises ships also have a dedicated Mini Club (ages 3 to 6) and Junior Club (ages 7 to 11) with age-appropriate activities. Designed in partnership with the Lego Group, the Mini Clubs offer games, events and activities such as arts and crafts. Junior Clubs have a Masterchef at Sea Juniors competition, plus acting, dancing and singing activities.

Related: New MSC Cruises ship in New York is bigger than the city's biggest hotel

MSC Cruises ships also have Young Club, a tween program (ages 12 to 14) that includes sports tournaments, high-tech games and other activities.

Then there's Teen Club (ages 15 to 17), which hosts disco parties, karaoke parties and Wii, Xbox and PlayStation 4 tournaments. On MSC Grandiosa, teens even get the chance to pilot a drone through an obstacle course during an activity called the Drone Academy, and the ship holds a teen dance competition designed in partnership with the company behind "The X Factor."

Kids and teens clubs on newer MSC Cruises ships can also access cutting-edge equipment like 3D printing machines, virtual reality devices and 3D product scanning, all of which are used in activities.

If you're a U.S. citizen on a cruise that starts and ends in a U.S. port, you'll need either a current passport or an official copy of your birth certificate and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification to sail. Passports must be valid for at least six months.

For cruises from international ports, you'll need a passport. It's important that the name on your reservation is listed exactly as it appears on your passport or other official proof of nationality.

MSC Cruises adds an automatic service charge of $16 per person to final bills on sailings out of U.S. ports. Sailings with pricing in euros have a 12 euro charge ($13.13 at current exchange rates). Children 2 to 11 pay half the adult rate on most cruises. Children under 2 are not charged for service.

Also, a 15% gratuity is added to bills at bars for cruisers who do not have a drinks package. If you buy a drinks package, the gratuity charges for drinks is folded into the package price when you book it. A 15% service charge is also added to items in minibars, salons and spas.

MSC Cruises has been rolling out Wi-Fi with speeds so fast that you'll be able to watch Netflix from your room on your mobile device. Unlike some lines, though, MSC Cruises doesn't offer flat-fee pricing for Wi-Fi. Instead, MSC Cruises charges by the number of devices you use and how you want to use the internet (think: browsing, texting, sending emails or video streaming).

Basic packages for browsing start around $72 for one device with unlimited data. A two-device plan with unlimited data for browsing costs about $109. There's also a four-device browsing plan for about $223. If you're looking to stream video along with other internet uses, you'll need a streaming plan. These start around $100 for one device and can be as high as $313 for a four-device plan.

Unlike other cruise lines, MSC Cruises does not let passengers switch their internet plan from one device to another during the cruise, even if they're only using one device at a time. Make sure you sign up for the Wi-Fi plan on the device you intend to use it with. If you'll want access on both your phone and your tablet, you will need a two-device plan.

Passengers can chat with friends and family on board ships even if they don't have an internet package by downloading the MSC for Me app to a smart device. The app also lets you book services on board.

Carry-on drinks policy

Unlike some lines, MSC Cruises doesn't allow passengers to bring their own alcohol on board.

Smoking policy

Smoking (including electronic cigarette smoking) is allowed in a limited number of designated areas on ships, with the primary smoking area on ships being an outdoor pool area that varies by ship and is indicated by signage. Smoking is forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 fee.

Unlike some lines, MSC Cruises does not build self-service launderettes onto its ships. Vessels offer extra-charge laundry and dry-cleaning services.

Electrical outlets

All vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets in rooms, as well as European-style, 220-volt outlets. A growing number of vessels also have USB ports in cabins.

For cruises in the Caribbean, South America and South Africa, as well as on MSC Grand Voyages going to Europe and to Australia, the onboard currency is the U.S. dollar.

On cruises in other parts of the world, the onboard currency is the euro. All vessels operate on a cashless system with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. You'll receive a Cruise Card (or, on the newer ships, an MSC for Me wristband) that you can use to make purchases.

Drinking age

You must be at least 21 years old to consume alcohol on sailings in the U.S. and the Caribbean. The drinking age on sailings everywhere else in the world is 18.

During the day, there's no specific dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination and you're bound for the top deck, that means dressing for the beach — T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to put on when you go inside) are just fine.

On most evenings, the line recommends "smart casual" dress, meaning summery dresses for women and a lightweight jacket for men. On select days, the line also holds Gala evenings on its ships where the dress code can be more formal. For Gala evenings, if dining in a main dining room, the line suggests a tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit and tie for men and a dressy outfit, formal gown or cocktail dress for women.

MSC Cruises loyalty program

MSC Cruises has a point-based frequent cruiser program, the MSC Voyagers Club , that has four tiers ranging from Classic (requiring 1 point) to Diamond (10,000 points).

Members earn points based on the length of the cruises they take and which "experience" they book on those sailings. There are four different "experiences" you can book on an MSC Cruises sailing, each with different inclusions and price points. The most basic "Bella" experience will get you fewer points than the top "MSC Yacht Club" experience.

For a sailing of under five nights, for instance, your earnings would range from 200 to 800 points depending on the experience you book. For cruises that are five to nine nights in length, you'd earn from 500 to 1,500 points depending on the experience.

Every person in your stateroom will earn points for the cruise. You can also earn points with onboard spending and any bookings you made before embarkation. You'll earn 100 points for every $150 in prepaid and onboard expenses.

Know, though, that there are a couple of key caveats. Only the Voyagers Club member who makes the final payment for the onboard expenses will receive those points. For prepaid expenses, points will be equally distributed among the cabin occupants.

Say, for example, the total amount of prepaid onboard services that apply to all cabin occupants before the cruise is $600. If there are four cabin occupants, the spending for the points calculation of each member will be $150, which is equal to 100 points.

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the entry-level tier (Classic) doesn't bring all that many truly valuable rewards. By far the most alluring benefit at this level is the 5% discount that members get when booking future sailings (note that this discount is not valid on Tandem and MSC Grand Tours). That's real savings every time you book a cruise.

The real perks begin at Diamond status, which brings a free dinner in an extra-charge restaurant, priority embarkation at the start of a cruise and priority disembarkation at the end of a cruise.

Unlike with most cruise line loyalty programs, you won't automatically keep your status forever with MSC Cruises. Once achieved, your status is good as long as you take a cruise at least once every 36 months. If you don't, not only will your points disappear, but your entire account will be erased, requiring you to re-enroll and start all over again.

That's the downside of the MSC Voyagers Club. However, the program also comes with one very big upside: MSC Cruises will let you status match your way to top-tier Diamond status based on your status level with any of more than two dozen other loyalty programs — not just those run by competing cruise lines but also those operated by Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton. It's very rare in the cruise world.

How much does an MSC Cruises voyage cost?

MSC Cruises is known for some of the most affordable ships at sea. It's not uncommon to find MSC Cruises voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from under $75 per person, per night, including all taxes and fees — at least in the offseason.

For instance, at the time of publication, four-night sailings from Miami to the Bahamas in September 2024 start at just $249 per person, not including taxes and fees of $100. That works out to just $87.25 per person, per night, with taxes and fees, for a package that includes your lodging, transportation and meals.

As you might expect, pricing for ships will generally be lower during offseason periods such as September, October and parts of November.

The timing of when you book can also matter. Cruises book up much further in advance than airplanes or hotels, and many cruisers will tell you the best pricing for any given sailing often is available when cruises first go on sale (which can be a good two years before a departure). Booking far in advance also gives you the best chance of getting your preferred cabin type and location on a ship.

Once on board an MSC Cruises ship, you'll pay extra for most drinks, extra-charge restaurants, spa services, shore excursions, internet and a few other amenities — unless you've paid up for a more inclusive package.

When pricing cabins, MSC Cruises offers one of four main "experiences," each of which comes with different inclusions and varying price tags. The basic "Bella" experience includes your room, dining in the main restaurants and buffet, and access to all the included features of the ship, such as kids programs and theater shows.

Note that if you book the Bella experience, you cannot select a specific cabin. You can only choose between the broad categories of inside, ocean-view or balcony cabin, and a cabin is later assigned to you.

One step up is the more expensive "Fantastica" experience, which adds room service and breakfast delivered to your cabin, priority choice of dinner sittings, access to additional kids activities and classes, and more. At this level and above, you can pick a specific cabin when booking.

With the even pricier "Aurea" experience, you'll get complimentary access to the spa's thermal area, priority boarding and other perks. The Aurea experience also comes with access to My Choice dining and an exclusive sun deck area that on many ships features an exclusive bar and hot tubs.

Then there's the MSC Yacht Club experience, mentioned above, which is the ultimate in onboard living. Even with its higher price tag, the MSC Yacht Club still provides great value for its wide range of perks, such as unlimited drinks in all MSC Yacht Club areas, including premium spirits and minibar items.

How to book

If you're sure you know what sort of cabin you want, on which ship, on which itinerary — and about a dozen other things — you can head over to the MSC Cruises website to book directly.

That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise (there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process: trust us) we recommend you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises. A good travel agent will quiz you about your interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They also can help if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage.

If you're sure MSC Cruises is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who knows all about the line's various cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see them firsthand.

Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your purchase when paying for the cruise by using a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases . This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit). There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , which earns 2 points per dollar spent on travel (and dining).

Bottom line

Long a major player in Europe, MSC Cruises is growing fast in North America with a lineup of big, new, amenity-filled ships.

If you're a megaresort lover, you'll feel right at home on MSC Cruises' new World, Meraviglia and Seaside Class vessels, which rival the biggest vessels of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian for their array of onboard amusements.

You'll also love their affordability. Among the world's biggest ships, they offer some of the lowest pricing. You'll be sharing your vacation with hordes of other people, of course — as many as 6,000 on some MSC Cruises vessels. However, even the biggest MSC Cruises ships have quiet nooks where you can escape the crowds.

Before we proceed, it’s important to note that the steps outlined in this guide are applicable to booking MSC cruises directly through their official website or authorized travel agents. Step 1: Choosing your MSC cruise

When it comes to selecting your MSC cruise, you are spoilt for choice. MSC Cruises offers a diverse range of itineraries spanning the globe, including popular destinations in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and more. Take the time to research and consider the various options available to find the perfect cruise that aligns with your preferences.

Start by considering the duration of the cruise. MSC offers a range of cruise lengths, from short weekend getaways to extended voyages. Think about how much time you have available and how long you’d like to spend onboard.

Next, consider the destinations you want to visit. MSC Cruises visits some of the most breathtaking and culturally rich ports of call. Whether you’re dreaming of exploring the ancient ruins of Rome, lounging on the pristine beaches of the Caribbean, or immersing yourself in the vibrant cities of Northern Europe, there’s a cruise itinerary to suit your wanderlust.

Don’t forget to take into account the time of year you plan to travel. Some destinations have peak seasons with higher demand and prices, while others may have more favorable weather conditions during certain months. Consider your preferences for climate and crowds when selecting your cruise dates.

Lastly, explore the various onboard amenities and activities offered by MSC Cruises. From world-class dining options to luxurious spa treatments, exciting entertainment shows, and engaging enrichment programs, MSC strives to provide a multitude of experiences to enhance your cruise vacation.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options and selected a cruise that ticks all the boxes, you’re ready to move on to the next step: booking your MSC cruise.

Step 2: Booking your MSC cruise

Booking your MSC cruise is a straightforward process that can be done online through the official MSC Cruises website or through authorized travel agents. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to book your dream cruise:

1. Visit the MSC Cruises website or contact a trusted travel agent: Begin by visiting the official MSC Cruises website or reaching out to an authorized travel agent. Both options provide a seamless booking experience, allowing you to compare prices, explore itineraries, and choose the cruise that suits your preferences.

2. Select the desired cruise: Use the search filters available on the website or discuss your preferences with a travel agent to find the specific MSC cruise that matches your desired destination, date, and duration. Ensure that the selected cruise aligns with your preferences and budget.

3. Choose your cabin type: MSC Cruises offers a variety of cabin types to meet different preferences and budgets. From comfortable interior cabins to spacious suites with stunning ocean views, weigh your options and choose a cabin that suits your needs.

4. Review the terms and conditions: Before finalizing your booking, take a moment to review the terms and conditions associated with your chosen cruise. This will include information on cancellation policies, payment terms, and other important details that you should be aware of.

5. Provide passenger information: Once you’ve selected your cruise and cabin type, you’ll need to provide the necessary passenger information for each guest sailing. This includes names, dates of birth, nationality, and passport information. Make sure to double-check the accuracy of the provided details.

6. Make your payment: Proceed to make the payment for your MSC cruise. Choose your preferred payment method and follow the instructions provided on the website or by your travel agent. Be sure to check for any available discounts or promotions that may apply to your booking.

7. Confirm your booking: After completing the payment, you will receive a confirmation email with all the details of your booking. Review the confirmation to ensure all the information is correct. If you notice any discrepancies, contact MSC Cruises or your travel agent immediately to rectify the issue.

With your MSC cruise now booked, you’re one step closer to embarking on an incredible journey. In the next step, we’ll discuss selecting your cabin type to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable onboard experience.

Step 3: Selecting your cabin type

Choosing the right cabin type for your MSC cruise is an essential part of ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable onboard experience. MSC Cruises offers a range of cabin options to suit various budgets and preferences. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Interior cabins: If you’re looking for a cost-effective option, interior cabins are a great choice. These cabins don’t have windows or balconies but provide a cozy and private space for you to relax and rest.

2. Oceanview cabins: Oceanview cabins offer beautiful views of the sea through a window. It’s a wonderful way to wake up to breathtaking vistas and enjoy the natural beauty of the ocean.

3. Balcony cabins: For those who crave the fresh ocean breeze and want a private outdoor space, balcony cabins are the ideal choice. These cabins come with a private balcony where you can unwind and enjoy the stunning views at any time.

4. Suite cabins: If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, suite cabins offer spacious accommodations with separate living areas, upgraded amenities, and exclusive perks such as access to private lounges and butler service.

When selecting your cabin, take into consideration your preferences for natural light, outdoor access, and extra space. Keep in mind that cabin availability may vary depending on the cruise ship and the specific itinerary.

It’s also important to consider the location of your cabin on the ship. Do you prefer a cabin closer to the amenities and entertainment areas, or are you looking for a quieter location? Take a look at the ship’s deck plan to get an idea of the cabin locations and choose one that suits your needs.

Once you have decided on the cabin type, proceed with your booking and make sure to review the cabin details before confirming your reservation.

Now that you have selected your cabin type, it’s time to move on to the next step: providing passenger information.

Step 4: Providing passenger information

As you proceed with booking your MSC cruise, you will need to provide passenger information for each guest who will be sailing with you. This step ensures that MSC Cruises has the necessary details to ensure a smooth check-in process and adhere to international travel regulations. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Full names: Provide the full names of all passengers exactly as they appear on their passports. Double-check the spelling to ensure accuracy. It’s important to note that the names provided during the booking process should match the names on the passports to avoid any issues during embarkation.

2. Dates of birth: Enter the correct dates of birth for each passenger. This information is crucial for verifying age requirements, such as minimum age restrictions for certain onboard facilities or alcohol consumption.

3. Nationality: Specify the nationality of each passenger. This information helps MSC Cruises comply with legal requirements and immigration policies.

4. Passport information: Enter the passport details for each passenger, including passport numbers and expiration dates. Make sure the passports are valid for the entire duration of your cruise. Some itineraries may also require additional visa information, so be prepared to provide that if necessary.

5. Contact details: Provide accurate contact information, including email addresses and phone numbers. This ensures that MSC Cruises can reach out to you regarding any updates or important information related to your cruise.

It is crucial to provide accurate and up-to-date information to avoid any complications during the check-in process or while on the cruise. Double-check all the information before submitting it to ensure it is correct.

Once you have provided the necessary passenger information, you can proceed with the payment process and confirm your booking. In the next step, we will discuss making the payment for your cruise tickets.

Step 5: Making payment for your cruise tickets

After providing the passenger information for your MSC cruise, the next step is making the payment for your cruise tickets. MSC Cruises offers various payment options to accommodate different preferences. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Payment methods: MSC Cruises typically accepts major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. They may also provide alternative payment options such as bank transfers or PayPal in some regions. Check the official MSC Cruises website or consult with your travel agent to determine the available payment methods for your booking.

2. Payment schedule: The payment schedule for MSC Cruises may vary depending on the length of your cruise and the time of your booking. Typically, a deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your reservation. The remaining balance is usually due closer to the departure date, but specific payment deadlines will be outlined in your booking confirmation.

3. Promotions and discounts: Keep an eye out for any available promotions or discounts that may be applicable to your booking. MSC Cruises often offers early booking discounts, onboard credit, or promotional packages that can provide added value to your cruise experience. Make sure to read the terms and conditions associated with any promotions to ensure you meet the requirements.

4. Insurance options: Consider purchasing travel insurance for your cruise. Travel insurance can provide coverage for unforeseen circumstances, such as trip cancellations or medical emergencies, offering you peace of mind during your vacation. Check with MSC Cruises or your travel agent to explore the available insurance options.

5. Cancellation policies: Familiarize yourself with the cancellation policies associated with your MSC cruise. Understand the deadlines for cancellations and the potential fees or penalties that may apply. It’s important to be aware of the cancellation policies to make an informed decision and avoid any unexpected charges.

Once you have selected your preferred payment method, make the necessary payment according to the provided instructions. Keep records of your payment confirmation and any communication with MSC Cruises for future reference.

With the payment for your cruise tickets completed, you’re one step closer to setting sail on your MSC adventure. In the following step, we’ll discuss the confirmation of your booking and what to expect next.

Step 6: Confirmation of your booking

After making the payment for your MSC cruise tickets, you will receive a confirmation of your booking. This confirmation serves as proof that your reservation is secured and provides important details about your upcoming cruise. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Confirmation email: Following your payment, MSC Cruises will send you a confirmation email to the email address provided during the booking process. This email will contain all the relevant details of your booking, including the cruise itinerary, cabin type, passenger names, departure date, and any additional services or packages you have booked.

2. Check the details: It is essential to review the confirmation email carefully to ensure that all the information is accurate. Check that the names of all passengers are spelled correctly, the cabin type matches your selection, and the dates and itinerary align with your plans.

3. Contact MSC Cruises or your travel agent if needed: If you notice any discrepancies or have any questions regarding your booking, contact MSC Cruises or your travel agent immediately. They will be able to assist you and rectify any issues that may arise.

4. Keep a copy of the confirmation: It is recommended to keep a printed or digital copy of the confirmation email for your records. This will serve as proof of your booking and provide all the necessary information you may need throughout the pre-cruise and embarkation process.

5. Additional documentation: Along with the confirmation email, you may also receive additional documentation such as e-tickets or boarding passes closer to your departure date. Make sure to read and follow any instructions provided in these documents to ensure a smooth embarkation process.

It’s important to note that the confirmation email and any related documents serve as your official proof of reservation. Without these, you may encounter difficulties during check-in or embarkation. If you have not received your confirmation email within a reasonable timeframe, contact MSC Cruises or your travel agent to inquire about the status of your booking.

Now that your booking has been confirmed, it’s time to move on to the final step: receiving your MSC cruise tickets.

Step 7: Receiving your MSC cruise tickets

Once your booking is confirmed, you might be wondering how you will receive your MSC cruise tickets. MSC Cruises has transitioned to electronic ticketing, which means that you will receive your cruise tickets electronically rather than in physical form. Here’s what you need to know:

1. E-ticket delivery: MSC Cruises will typically send your electronic cruise tickets via email. The e-tickets will include all the pertinent information about your cruise, including your booking details, cabin assignment, embarkation information, and any additional services or packages you may have purchased.

2. Print or digital format: You have the choice of either printing out your e-tickets or keeping them in a digital format on your smartphone or tablet. Whichever option you choose, ensure that you have easy access to your e-tickets during the pre-cruise and embarkation process.

3. Additional travel documents: Depending on the specific itinerary and destinations, you may need additional travel documents such as visas or health declarations. It is crucial to review the documentation requirements for your particular cruise and ensure that you have obtained all necessary permits or visas in advance.

4. Pre-cruise registration: Some MSC Cruises may require pre-cruise registration, where you will need to provide additional information or complete certain forms online. Keep an eye out for any pre-cruise registration emails and complete the necessary steps as instructed.

5. Additional information and updates: MSC Cruises may also send you additional information and updates leading up to your departure date, including embarkation procedures, onboard activities, and any changes or updates to your itinerary. Stay informed by regularly checking your email and reviewing any communication from MSC Cruises.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding the delivery of your cruise tickets, don’t hesitate to reach out to MSC Cruises or your travel agent. They will be able to assist you and provide any necessary guidance.

With your MSC cruise tickets securely in your possession, you are now ready to embark on your much-anticipated journey. Prepare to make unforgettable memories as you indulge in the onboard amenities, explore fascinating destinations, and immerse yourself in the world of MSC Cruises.

Your guests name does already appear on the booking details for your cabin though?

Yes. Name and DOB but how do you add passport and Voyager #? Is this done during checkin maybe?

You should have a passenger data tab at the top of the booking details screen, both passengers details should be entered there (web site).

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!  It took me awhile to find it…but I did with your help.

Thanks

Also to note.  I could only get to the page with Booking Detail and Account Services by logging in with my email/password.  Logging in with Booking Number did not take to a page where I could do anything.

I know, it took me a while to figure that out, LOL. Even so, I cannot seem to add my Voyagers number or add my address. The reason for this is that the travel agent I used has booked us through MSC France, while I live in Switzerland. Therefore, I cannot add my address because, the country of residence (France) is already pre-filled and cannot be changed. I've asked my TA several times now and he doesn't seem to either understand or willing to help. I've no idea what to do now.

Oh my gosh…I feel your frustration.  I just tried to log nto the MSC website for the US where we live and it says it’s not the right website for my country…lol.   a hack that I did on address because it couldn’t find my address by zip code verification was use my neighbors address. Once it verified their address I went back and put in my correct address.  Do you use any type of zip code identification that you can enter street and zip to see if it changes France yo Switzerland?

re voyager number. Are you the primary or secondary guest.  I’m secondary, and once I put my info in the account support tab (wouldn’t take my voyager number) on the website, I relogged into the app using the Booking Number, my first/last name. It brought up my profile where I could see that had my Voyager number on my profile. Def quite a wonky MSC web/app.

hope this helps some.

No, unfortunately I have to enter the postcode for the site to 'find address', then I can only use a dropdown to choose my actual street address/town, and obviously it won't accept my Swiss postcode.

I could actually add my Voyagers number, I was thinking about another MSC form that wouldn't let me add that, probably a link sent to me by my TA. Anyway, I'm sure the TA will eventually sort it out, as he wouldn't have booked me through MSC France knowing I live in Switzerland, if it was going to be a problem....or at least I hope so.

passports for msc cruises

Where can I cruise without a passport?

At TPG, we always recommend cruising with a passport, but there are many reasons why you might want to set sail without one.

What if an opportunity pops up on short notice, and you don't have a passport yet? Or what if you forgot to renew yours when it expired? What if it's only a three-night cruise to the Bahamas, and the passport application fee is almost as much as the cruise fare? Or, maybe you have children nearing age 16 and can't justify paying for passports that will only be good for five years.

First of all, do you even need a passport to cruise ? The answer is often but not always. You have options to cruise without a passport because not every sailing requires them. Thanks to an international agreement called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative , U.S. citizens can cruise on certain itineraries within North American countries using government-issued identification (like a valid driver's license) and proof of citizenship (like a government-issued birth certificate).

The cruises that you don't need a passport for are closed-loop sailings, which depart from and return to the same port within the U.S. One-way sailings from one U.S. port to another or from a U.S. port to a foreign one would require a passport.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Before we go further, let's clarify that when we talk about cruising without a passport, we're referring to pricey passport books that some travelers do not wish to purchase. Passport cards can also be used for identification when cruising in all the places we are about to discuss; these cards are a low-cost alternative to traveling with your driver's license and birth certificate.

Let's look at the options for where you can cruise without a passport.

Cruising to Alaska is one of the easiest ways to experience all the state offers. You'll have opportunities to see glaciers and wildlife; stroll the streets of charming coastal towns; eat your fill of local crab legs and salmon; and enjoy nature on a kayak, zip line or hike.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska without a passport, look for itineraries that begin (and end) in Seattle , San Francisco or southern California ports, such as Los Angeles or Long Beach, California. The most common length for these closed-loop Alaska cruises operated by the major cruise lines is seven nights. Cruises early or late in the season might be only four or five nights, and trips departing from LA are usually 14 nights.

What if you really want to cruise one-way from Canada to Alaska (or vice versa)? Although Canada prefers U.S. citizens who arrive by sea or land to have a passport book, it is not required as long as they have proper identification and proof of citizenship. The U.S., however, requires one of the following WHTI-approved forms of identification for entries by land or sea: passport card, enhanced driver's license, I-872 American Indian card or trusted traveler program IDs like Nexus, Sentri and Fast.

Technically, if you have one of those forms of ID but not a passport book, you can take a one-way Alaska cruise — as long as you don't have to fly to or from Canada.

More complications arise for non-passport holders who book shore excursions that involve crossing from Alaska to Canada. White Pass and Yukon Route train rides are good examples. White Pass and Yukon Route allows cruise passengers to go on the three-hour train excursion without a passport but doesn't allow them to take any longer routes. That's their policy, not a legal requirement.

This means that Alaska cruises are one instance when the passport card would be a handy alternative to traveling with both an ID card and a birth certificate. It opens up one-way itineraries.

A cruise to the Caribbean transports you to tropical islands bathed in turquoise waters. Whether you seek warm beaches, cool drinks, water sports or cultural education, you can find a Caribbean cruise to fit the bill.

It's easy to cruise without a passport in the Caribbean: Just book one of the many closed-loop, round-trip sailings departing from a U.S. port. Most major cruise lines offer sailings that range between three and 15 nights from ports like Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; multiple ports in Florida (including Miami and Fort Lauderdale); Charleston, South Carolina; Baltimore; Bayonne, New Jersey; and New York City.

Most Caribbean islands participate in the WHTI, but it's always best to check the details specific to the ports of call included in your itinerary. Don't forget that islands such as Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are U.S. territories, so visits never require passports for U.S. citizens.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, lying 643 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Hop on a cruise ship for a direct route to the island's famous beaches and golf courses. Spring and summer are the prime seasons to visit, but cruises are possible throughout the year.

Cruising without a passport to Bermuda is also easy. Apart from a few isolated cruises stopping in Bermuda as they come or go from other destinations, there are no one-way Bermuda cruises to confuse the situation. If you plan to sail without a passport, be wary of any Bermuda cruise longer than 10 nights. Those are likely to be point-to-point cruises that happen to include Bermuda.

Passport-free cruises to Bermuda include ample five- to 10-night sailings from the East Coast ports of Baltimore, Bayonne, Boston and Manhattan. Occasional itineraries also pop up throughout the Bermuda season departing from Norfolk, Virginia; Charleston; and the Florida ports of Miami, Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Jacksonville.

Long known for delightful strands of beach and access to every imaginable form of water fun under the subtropical sun, the Bahamas are the ideal destination for easy and quick cruise vacations.

Skip the passport on three- to five-night Bahamas cruises sailing round-trip on most major cruise lines from the eastern Florida ports of Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades and Miami.

A few longer, seven- to 15-night itineraries stop in the Bahamas on their way into the Caribbean. Departures from Bayonne, Manhattan, Baltimore and Charleston will often get you weeklong Bahamas itineraries, as will sailings from Tampa, Galveston and New Orleans.

Our southern neighbor boasts two coastlines of cruise fun. Like most tropical cruise destinations, the top draws are the beaches and the ocean; however, cruise ports in Mexico also give you access to ancient Mayan ruins, delicious cuisine and an abundance of land activities.

Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts are both accessible to cruisers who do not hold passports. If you want to visit Mexico's eastern shores, you can find three- to 15-night cruises to Costa Maya, Cozumel and Progreso. Sailings depart Florida from Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral; you can also find itineraries from New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile, Alabama.

Western Mexico, often referred to as the Mexican Riviera, includes the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, among others. Cruises with several major lines depart San Diego, San Pedro port in LA and Long Beach for voyages lasting anywhere from three to 10 nights.

From water sports to American history and Hawaiian culture, there's a lot to experience on a Hawaii cruise . The best part might be the ability to hop from island to island, sampling the flavors of each as you go.

Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port.

Small-ship cruise operator UnCruise Adventures also offers seven-night, inter-island Hawaiian sailings. The American-flagged ships only cruise to and from U.S. ports, so no passport is needed, as would be the case on any domestic trip.

The long-cruise options consist of 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings from San Diego, LA (Long Beach and San Pedro) and San Francisco. You won't need a passport for these closed-loop sailings, but you do need to be prepared for multiple days at sea as you cross the Pacific from California to Hawaii.

Beware of 20-plus-night cruises that are round-trip sailings from the West Coast and would seem to fit the bill for closed-loop cruises that don't require passports. Most of these cruises don't work because they also include stops in French Polynesia, which is outside of the WHTI agreement. Passports are required for the islands in the South Pacific, which means they're required for the entire cruise.

Canada and New England

Cruises up North America's East Coast allow you to take in historical sights of early Americana, stand atop rugged cliffs on the coast of Nova Scotia or revel in the French culture of Quebec.

Mainstream cruise lines operate numerous cruises along the U.S. and Canadian coasts that don't require passports. These depart from the ports of Bayonne, Baltimore, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn and occasionally Norfolk. The majority of these New England and Canada cruises are weeklong fall sailings; however, a handful depart at other times of the year or are a touch longer, ranging from eight to 10 nights.

Related: The best cruises to Canada and New England

Some cruise lines also offer one-way cruises in both directions between Canada and New England. These itineraries, like Alaska cruises, might be possible without a passport book. This is the case as long as your plans don't include flying into or out of Canada and your cruise line allows you to cruise with either a passport card or other acceptable form of identification and proof of citizenship.

We checked with a few lines for you. Princess, Holland America and Celebrity all strongly recommend passport books, but they allow one of the WHTI forms of identification. Again, the passport card opens up one-way possibilities, assuming you aren't flying and your cruise only includes Canada and the U.S.

Bottom line

While cruising with a passport is always recommended, it's not required by law in certain circumstances. Closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports that visit Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are part of an international agreement that allows U.S. citizens to cruise without a passport. In these cases, government-issued identification and proof of U.S. citizenship are acceptable alternatives to a passport book.

Passport cards are an affordable and unquestionable alternative to carrying an ID and birth certificate. If you want to go this route, know they are not valid for travel by air into or out of any foreign country, including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or Caribbean countries — which is the primary reason most travel advisers urge cruisers to have a passport book.

As we've shown, you have plenty of options for where to cruise without a passport, and many travelers do so without incident. However, anything from engine trouble on your cruise ship to bad weather or an accident in port might necessitate a flight home from a foreign country. This would put you in an awkward position if you didn't have a passport.

Plus, as much fun as simple round-trip cruises are, passports open up additional vacation possibilities in the form of longer, point-to-point and overseas trips. Don't dismiss registering for a passport, even as you consider where you can cruise without one.
