With romance, adventure, and fun plot twists, these time travel TV shows are sure to entertain.

time travel romance tv series

The time travel trope is quintessentially romantic, with different themes and elements giving it a desperate, romantic air. There is the lone time traveler, bouncing across time in search of lost love. Or a group of travelers unable to return home due to a rift in the space/time continuum. Better yet, the star-crossed lovers fated only to get snatches of time together.  Swoon . There is so much to love about time travel TV shows!

This is a great list! I love the Korean drama Time Travel series. My favorites are Faith, Rooftop Prince, I love Lee Tae Ri, Signal and Tunnel.

Have you ever seen “Voyagers!”? It was like a predecessor to Quantum Leap and lasted 1 season on NBC. It stared one of the most beautiful men to ever grace television, the late Jon-Erik Hexum. He’s a roguish time-traveling pirate, Phineas Bogg, a Voyager that travels throughout time with a smart young boy and they have to fix moments where history’s gone wrong. It was a fun show. It’s definitely binge-worthy and Hexum was such a charming young actor. Although it was made with kids and education in mind, (Co-Produced by Scholastic) there’s plenty of romantic moments for Bogg!

He and Meeno Peluce (the boy, Jeffrey Jones) made a great team. I run a fansite and FB page for the series. You can watch it on Amazon Prime, and it’s currently free on NBC.com.

I own the series and I was heartbroken when Jon died. I recently bought the 30 episode tv show from the 60’s The Time Tunnel…. Now this was where most time travel shows spawned from. Especially Quantum Leap.

Nice list! Back to the Future made me a sucker for time travel plots. So would the cartoon count as one?

How can Outlander be #16?

You NEED TO READ – It clearly states that the shows are in No Particular Order!

You forgot ‘The Time tunnel’ – The first American time travel show

Goodnight Sweetheart is THE ultimate time travel show!

Maybe you guys can help me….. I’m looking for a series perhaps a movie….. not sure. only saw a piece of it and have been searching ever since. I even looked trough all the male actors to cross reference, nothing. It seem to involve time travel an attempt to shift history. Almost achieve the goal by manipulating the son of the leader – I know its horribly vague…. but he ends up speaking to his son. He explains the situation from a watchmakers point of view- His hobby is watchmaking….the comparison he draws between ‘leading’ or directing humans where they need to be is similar to the watchmaker making a clock. its been almost two years…. but so far no luck finding this series. Help 🙂

think you may be thinking of inception (link removed)

How could you not have Netflix’s Dark on this list?

I agree. Dark is a pretty good series (3 seasons on Netflix). It’s a German show so you have to up with English lip syncing, but once you get used to it, it’s a good show.

Absolutely the best time travel show ever made imo

It is on the list (#30).

12 Monkeys needs to be #1 … Pretty sure it’s the only show that properly does time travel and causality! Love it

Continuum seems to be right on the money as we see a few corporations [e.g., Amazon] displacing small business, and taking over government. Science Fiction frequently becomes Science.

Looks like Continuum is no longer on Amazon Prime (unless you want to buy it. Is it anywhere else?

It looks like it’s only available to buy on Digital and DVD/Blu-ray now.

Netflix’s DARK is the best Time Travel show ever made. Never believe anything else!

Timeslip UK kids show from 60`s predates all these and deals with past , future, global cooling(remember that) and cloning.

I’ve never heard of it! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

It’s a indian movie named Time

Brødrene Dal og Spektralsteinene and Brødrene Dal og Mysteriet om Karl XIIs Gamasjer both have time travel as a key element. I prefer the former but both are pretty well planned out, although only the latter seems to remember concequences.

Thanks for the recommendations! 🙂

I like some others am trying to find a “Time Travel” movie that’s kind of like “If Only” Where a mans’ wife (Possibly Girlfriend) is killed in an auto accident an he keeps traveling back to that time to make her avoid it. He finds every time that it is avoided she is killed in another way. After so many attempts he goes back and gets in the car with her and they both die. So sort of like “If Only “ and sort of like the first part of “The Time Machine”(2002). I think the movie time-line was between 1970 and 2000 only guessing. I didn’t see the start of the movie. Always wanted to see it but the same accident happens or is averted only to have a new death.

Netflix’s New Time-Travel Romance Embraces the Weirdest Parts of the Genre

A Time Called You is so much more than its time traveling premise — for better and worse.

Jeon Yeo-been and Ahn Hyo-seop in A Time Called You

South Korean dramas — particularly the romantic ones — love to play with time travel . It’s been a staple of the industry for decades, from the classic film Il Mare to the hilarious Familiar Wife . As delightful as these past attempts have been, there are only so many ways to create a time loop. It’d be easy to assume that the time-tripping subgenre is finally running out of ideas — but Netflix’s latest K-drama, A Time Called You , is proof that there’s still endless content to mine.

A Time Called You is not your standard time travel romance by any means. As an adaptation of the hit Taiwanese drama Someday or One Day , it’s got a huge reputation to live up to, and an ambitious story to remix. But it sets itself apart with a healthy dose of the melodrama that’s defined many a K-romance, and the idyllic, bittersweet visuals that its predecessors have perfected.

It all starts with a flashback to a music shop in 1988, where a painfully shy high school student (Jeon Yeo-been) works in her downtime. She’s shocked when two of her cute classmates, the equally-bashful In-gyu ( Little Women ’ s Kang Hoon) and school heartthrob Si-heon (Ahn Hyo-seop, Business Proposal ), come in to chat. The makings of an earnest love triangle begin to materialize right away: In-gyu clearly has a crush on this girl, and Si-heon is working tirelessly to set him up with her. Unfortunately, she’s only got eyes for Si-heon — but more on that later.

When the series jumps forward in time to the present day, it’s not to that same girl all grown up, but to a woman who looks a lot like her, Han Jun-hee. She’s a successful career woman that seems to have it all together, but a closer look reveals a harrowing heartbreak beneath her cool façade. It’s been exactly a year since her boyfriend Yeon-jun disappeared in a plane crash over the Pacific. She’s harboring major guilt over his death: the couple was trying to make it long distance while Jun-hee took a cushy one-year job overseas. Yeon-jun was flying to surprise her for her birthday when he disappeared, which sours any celebrations she has planned. (Enough melodrama for you yet?)

While Yeon-jun’s family and friends are ready to accept the fact that he’s gone, Jun-hee is still struggling to let him go. It doesn’t help that she’s been getting mysterious gifts from strangers — gifts she once received from him! — and catching flashes of Yeon-jun lookalikes on the subway. Either way, she’d give anything to see Yeon-jun at least once more. So when she stumbles across a photo of the high school kids from 1988, one of whom bears an uncanny resemblance to Yeon-jun, it feels like an unmistakable nudge from fate.

Jeon Yeo-been and Ahn Hyo-seop in A Time Called You

Jeon Yeo-been and Ahn Hyo-seop play star-crossed lovers twice over in A Time Called You .

As Jun-hee begins to investigate the photo, it becomes clear that those flashbacks aren’t glimpses of her past at all, but a parallel timeline populated by some very familiar faces. She has no memory of the events that took place in ‘88 — nor should she, since she wasn’t even born yet. Things get even weirder when she learns that her doppelgänger, Kwon Min-ju, was killed shortly after the mysterious photo was taken. It’s enough to make anyone’s head swim, and that’s all before Jun-hee wakes up in Min-ju’s body in 1988.

A Time Called You takes it sweet time explaining how any of this is possible, but the science behind this time-tripping body swap falls somewhere between Being John Malkovich and Big (or its spiritual sequel, Little ) on the gonzo scale. The series is, admittedly, juggling a lot. While she occupies Min-ju’s body, Jun-hee has so much more to grapple with than her boyfriend’s disappearance. When she finds herself face-to-face with his lookalike Si-heon, she’s determined to uncover the connection between them.

Min-ju also has plenty of problems to contend with herself. Apart from a reluctant romance with In-gyu and a tumultuous home life, she’s also living on borrowed time. Watching Jun-hee “stand up” for Min-ju, and work to prevent her murder, is one of the drama’s defining highlights. Her budding rapport with Si-heon and In-gyu, under cherry blossom trees and in the aisles of quaint record shops, invoke the innocence and nostalgia of Korea’s best coming-of-age dramas.

Jeon Yeo-been as Kwon Min-ju in A Time Called You

Jeon Yeo-been as Kwon Min-ju in A Time Called You .

Love triangles and misunderstandings have always been a staple in K-dramas, and this one in particular is packed with as many as possible. The personal connections in A Time Called You are the very thing that keep its story afloat, even if its time loop gets a bit harder to follow as time goes by. Of course, the central premise is really just a means to an end. No one tunes into a time travel mystery to understand its unique brand of science, but to see how that science complicates lives and offers second chances.

On that front at least, A Time Called You succeeds. It may dip too much into the melodrama just when it needs to get serious, but it executes familiar tropes in a fresh, compelling way. It knows how to parse its mystery through Netflix’s addictive format. Even when its winding mystery starts to get frustrating, you may find yourself bingeing the series just to get answers.

A Time Called You is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Steamy Time Travel Drama Everyone's Binging On Netflix

Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan lying on the grass

Contains minor spoilers for  Outlander

In the wake of  Bridgerton 's success, television fans are seeking out other steamy historical romances to watch while they wait for Season 2 of the Netflix series . One such series that has folks glued to the couch in a binge-watching haze is Starz' addictive time-traveling romance Outlander , the fourth season of which just hit Netflix at the end of January.

The show, which premiered in 2014 and is based on a series of lengthy fantasy-romance novels by author Diana Gabaldon, stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall, a former World War II nurse who, while on vacation in Scotland with her historian husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies), travels back in time from 1945 to 1743 via a mysterious stone circle at Craigh na Dun. Claire initially struggles to survive in the past, and is nearly assaulted soon after arriving, but she is saved by a rugged Highlander by the name of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). He and his men are on the run from the depraved Captain "Black Jack" Randall (also Menzies), who turns out to be one of Frank's ancestors.

Trapped in the past with no means of escaping that she can see, Claire at least makes great use of her nursing skills, properly diagnosing illnesses and saving lives with her advanced medical training. She is eventually forced to marry Jamie out of necessity, an event that results in a very steamy wedding night which,  much like those steamy scenes in Bridgerton , is also portrayed through the female gaze. Before long, she actually falls in love with the man, though he doesn't always make it easy. Because she also still loves her husband Frank, Claire spends a great deal of time strung out across the time-travely love triangle.

Outlander is more than just a steamy romance

If you love complicated, layered romances, Outlander is definitely the series for you. However, it's also much, much more than that. The show, which has been renewed through at least Season 6 and holds an 89% fresh rating on review aggregator   Rotten Tomatoes , merges its sexy brand of romance with fantasy elements (Claire's mysterious ability to travel through time via the stones) and a close attention to historical detail to create a one-of-a-kind genre blend that will keep you riveted for hours.

For instance, Claire regularly uses her knowledge of the future, including the failed Jacobite rebellion at Culloden, a major plot point early in the show, to attempt to change history. It takes some time to convince Jamie that she's actually from the future and not a lunatic, but eventually she succeeds, and the couple travel to France in Season 2 in an attempt to thwart the Jacobites by infiltrating the movement and preventing the battle of Culloden from ever occurring.

Meanwhile, time travel remains a confusing, if vital, part of the show. It is eventually revealed that Claire is not the only person who has made a trip through time. To say much more would be to spoil several key plot points and reveals, which we won't do. We will mention, however, that as the series progresses, the story takes its heroine all over the world  — season 3 finds her in the Caribbean, while season 4 takes her to the American colonies to witness some of the messed up things that happened in colonial times . But one thing remains the same amid the rapid motion of the convoluted plot and shifting locations: Claire's love for and dedication to Jamie. It is the one thing that not even time and distance can change.

Check it out for yourself, now streaming on Netflix.

As opposed to having to wait several months, compared with fans across the pond, for the Sky One original series to bring us the final chapter of the saga, fans in the United States can rejoice in knowing that AMC+ is all set to show the action right near the beginning of the year this time around. So, we won't have to wait too long to see how all of the magical shenanigans wrap up after that dramatic Season 2 finale!

Sweet Magnolias (Season 2) - February 4, 2022

What a pleasant surprise Sweet Magnolias was when it hit Netflix in May 2020. Set in fictional Serenity, South Carolina, this small town romance (which is also based on a long-running series of books, this time by author Sherryl Woods) focuses on the lives of best friends Helen (Heather Headley), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), as they begin a new business together and deal with an intriguing assortment of family and personal issues, including hot but dastardly ex-husbands, shady estranged husbands, town mysteries, and a lot of truly appealing potential mates .

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 finally started filming in late spring 2021, with production ending in mid-July, and while we still have a few weeks until we're able to binge it all, we now know that February 4, 2022 will bring the relief we've been looking for! This is another romantic drama that wrapped with a shocking cliffhanger and several unanswered questions, so all eyes will be eager to see how our beloved trio moves forward after the events of the Season 1 finale.

Outlander (Season 6) - March 6, 2022

One could easily claim that this Starz hit is the show which began the current day obsession with romantic television dramas, as Outlander will be heading into Season 6 when it finally returns. This time-traveling romance is based on Diana Gabaldon's long-running series, and sees 1940s nurse Claire ( Caitriona Balfe ) being accidentally transported to 1700s Scotland and soon falling for Jamie ( Sam Heughan ), and him doing everything in his power to protect her as they marry, have children, and endure a variety of beyond difficult times with a number of friends, family, and outright enemies.

Outlander ran with intense action and nudity-filled romantic sexytimes so that Bridgerton could... also run, but in a slightly different direction, OK? Filming on Season 6 (which will have fewer episodes than usual ) began in early February 2021, and it's now expected to premiere on Sunday, March 6, 2022. And, the show has already been renewed for Season 7, which will make up for the lower episode count of the upcoming season by giving viewers 16 episodes! If next year is anything like 2021, March will feel like it's here in no time!

Sanditon (Season 2) - March 20, 2022

Looks like Outlander is going to have some Sunday night romance competition! Masterpiece has always brought a lot of joy to PBS, so how about the surprise renewal of Sanditon ? Season 1 aired way back in the dawn of 2020, with it having already been cancelled by British broadcaster ITV by then. It seemed that the series was totally dead in the water, despite leaving fans without the happily ever after ending which they'd become accustomed to with other Jane Austen adaptations (as this is another, albeit of her final and unfinished manuscript), but that decision was blissfully reversed in early May 2021.

Sanditon , which follows independent and high-spirited Charlotte (Rose Williams) as she leaves her family behind and tries to navigate life and love in the eponymous seaside town, started production on Season 2 in October 2021. Luckily, it won't be too long into 2022 before we can watch her defy expectations once more, as it's now set to hit screens on Sunday, March 20, 2022, and with two, lovely, brand new suitors .  Even better, Sanditon has already been given the green light for Season 3, as well!

Bridgerton (Season 2) - March 25

Bridgerton is far from the first show to feature a love story as its main focus, but it has certainly set pop culture ablaze unlike any other recent series. Season 1 found its hit-making status by following along with the first novel in Julia Quinn's series of romances and letting us watch along as Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset, The Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), went from enemies to friends to lovers. Now, Season 2 is on track to cover the romance of Daphne's big bro, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), as he and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) get some pants feelings for one another in short order, while also deepening the seeds of love previously planted elsewhere with the Bridgerton clan.

Luckily, we are getting very close to Bridgerton Season 2 being on screen for us to enjoy. Filming officially wrapped as of late November 2021, and the official debut was set by Christmas Day, when a lovely announcement video featuring much of the cast let fans know that we can watch it all unfold on March 25! This means we won't have to wait too much longer for more romantic action and scandalous sexual discovery!

Miss Scarlet & The Duke (Season 2) - 2022

OK, this one is actually a tiny bit of a cheat, but I'm including the divine 1880s-set, Victorian London detective series Miss Scarlet & The Duke for all of you romance fans who also like a cozy mystery and some good, old-fashioned longing.

The show follows Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips), who takes over her dead father's detective business despite being a woman in the 1880s who's expected to marry and spend her life raising children. As she investigates cases, she crosses paths with William "The Duke" Wellington (Stuart Martin), a police inspector who was a childhood friend, considered her late father a mentor for quite a while, and does not take kindly to her inserting herself into all of his police investigations. As you might imagine, Miss Scarlet and The Duke have had a thing for each other for years, and every time they interact, there are loads of sparks. Season 1 did very well for PBS and Masterpiece , and Season 2 should come along at some point in 2022, though we're without a specific date yet.

When Calls The Heart (Season 9) - 2022

As Hallmark's longest running romantic drama, When Calls the Heart has retained a lot of fans while weathering cast changes, controversies, and very opinionated viewers who are not at all happy with how a certain love triangle turned out. The sweet romance, set in a small Canadian coal-mining town in 1910, and based on Janette Oke's book of the same name, sees high society lady Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) learn to deal with life in the town after she's assigned to teach there.

And, as one might imagine, stories about the lives and loves of Elizabeth and the townsfolk have blossomed through eight seasons so far, with Season 9 set to debut at some point in 2022. Hopefully, viewers will see a February or March debut, which will have the new season follow how the series has premiered for several previous years.

Virgin River (Season 4) - 2022

Virgin River fans rejoiced in September 2021, when it was announced that the romantic drama would return for Season 4 and Season 5 on Netflix. Obviously, work hasn't begun on the fifth installment just yet, but the fourth season got underway in late July, not long after Season 3 premiered.

And, it's a good thing, too, because the most recent set of episodes left fans with a number of big cliffhangers after the Virgin River Season 3 ending . Jack (Martin Henderson) proposed to Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge), who responded by giving him her shocking pregnancy news. Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) and her new husband, Todd (Patrick Sabongui), continued to be a major problem (i.e., big ol' buttheads) when it came to Jack and the twins. Brady (Ben Hollingsworth) was arrested for shooting Jack, and Doc's (Tim Matheson) supposed surprise grandson showed up in town unexpectedly. Basically, the 2022 debut of Season 4 (which will hopefully be sometime between April and July) can't come soon enough!

Bridgerton Spinoff (Season 1) - TBD

While it's no great shock that Netflix wants to capitalize on the massive success of Bridgerton as much as possible, even fans of the books were probably taken aback when it was announced that a limited series is in the works , which will follow younger versions of Queen Charlotte, Lady Violet Bridgerton, and Lady Danbury.

The show will follow the women as they rise in their stations in life, and probably offer up views of the juicy romances they had as youngsters, with most of the focus set to be on Charlotte. There are still a lot of things we don't know about this series right now, as the cast, when production might start and when it will hit Netflix are still mysteries. But, we do know that the series will be written by Shonda Rhimes herself, and she'll also serve as one of the executive producers.

As you can see, fans of romantic dramas already have a lot to look forward to in the coming months and years when it comes to new content, and there will be plenty of new episodes to binge as we head into this winter and beyond!

Be sure to bookmark this list, as we'll keep it updated when new details and shows emerge!

While most Korean dramas involving time traveling only see one character do the time traveling, My Perfect Stranger takes a risk in making both of its main characters time travelers. One does so on purpose though, while the other does not. Yoon Young (Jin Ki Joo) discovers her mother dead and is then struck by a car, waking up in the same time that Hae Jun traveled to. Intrigued by her, he tries to save her, and they become linked.

The 10 Best Time-Travel K-Dramas, Ranked

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

Time traveling is a popular plot device that has been used across various genres, from science fiction to romance, in movies and TV shows like Back to the Future , Looper , and Outlander . This intriguing concept has also become a popular theme in Korean dramas. As K-dramas continue to captivate audiences worldwide, viewers are diving into the rich archives of past productions — unearthing hidden time-traveling K-drama gems that showcase a refreshing take on a popular trope .

Many historical dramas explore this concept in depth, oftentimes bringing a modern character to a more conservative past. These are also, more often than not, romance stories with a bit of mystery involved. Many times, time-traveling K-dramas incorporate a lot of humor and comedy, as one character (or multiple) exists in a timeline that they don't belong in. They don't know the ins and the outs, and that sets up for comedic scenarios. From the romantic fantasy of Splash Splash Love to the mystifying plot of Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo , each K-drama brings a different perspective to time traveling as a concept.

10 'The Great Doctor' (2012)

Created by kim young-hyun and park sang-yeon.

The Great Doctor takes place during the Goryeo Dynasty. An attack is launched on King Gongmin ( Ryu Deok-hwan ) and Queen Noguk ( Park Se-young ) one night, and it’s up to Captain Choi Young ( Lee Min Ho ) and his guards to protect them both. However, Queen Noguk is gravely injured, and no doctor in the Goryeo Dynasty is capable of saving her. The King then commands his guards to go find the doctor from the Kingdom of Heaven. When a portal opens up, it turns out that the Kingdom of Heaven is actually the modern era of Korea. Choi Young then finds a plastic surgeon – Eun Soo ( Kim Hee-Sun ) – and brings her back to his era, where she is trapped serving King Gongmin with no way to return home.

A must-see medical K-drama , The Great Doctor has a slow start, but it builds up quickly as the show progresses . A romance, forbidden by time itself, ignites between Choi Young and Eun-Soo , and viewers will be rooting for them and praying for a happy ending. The show also includes fantastical elements, such as extraordinary powers and magic.

9 'Tomorrow With You' (2017)

Created by heo sung-hye.

Yoo So-Joon ( Lee Je-Hoon ) is a CEO who has time-traveling abilities. Any time he uses the subway, he can travel into the future. Meanwhile, Ma-Rin ( Shin Min-A ) is a photographer trying to make ends meet after an unsuccessful career in the entertainment industry. Unbeknownst to her, So-Joon discovers when Ma-Rin is about to get into an accident, so he tries to save her, though he comes off weird and awkward. However, intentions aside, their fates become intertwined.

The concept of Tomorrow With You is interesting, and it’s rarely explored in time-traveling K-dramas. Usually, characters time travel unintentionally by supernatural means. But in So-Joon’s case, he decides when he wants to time travel . The romance will definitely grow on the viewers as they grow invested in the connection between Ma-Rin and So-Joon.

Watch on Roku

8 'Queen and I' (2012)

Created by song jae-jung.

Queen and I joins the ranks of Love in the Moonlight as an excellent historical K-drama due to its enthralling story. It follows two protagonists, Kim Boong-Do ( Ji Hyun-Woo ) and Choi Hee-Jin ( Yoo In-Na ), in their respective timelines. Hee-Jin is an actress in modern-day Korea, while Boong-Do is a scholar from the Joseon Dynasty. After almost being assassinated, Boong-Do ends up in present-day Korea on Hee-Jin’s film set. He soon learns that he is able to teleport back and forth in time, and the more time he spends with Hee-Jin, the more he falls in love with her, as she does with him.

Many time-traveling K-dramas focus on a prince and a lowly maiden — however, in rare cases like Queen and I and The Great Doctor , the cast consists of lower-ranking characters , like a scholar. There are plenty of comedic moments in the K-drama that make it worth watching, and viewers who love romantic comedies, heartfelt stories, and time-traveling will love this drama.

7 'Familiar Wife' (2018)

Created by yang hee-seung.

Cha Joo-Hyuk ( Ji-Sung ) is a married man with two kids of his own. The problem is, he loathes his wife, and he has a negative outlook on life. Life at home is not perfect, and neither is his work life. He lives a somewhat miserable life, from his perspective. Life for Joo-Hyuk changes, however, after he visits a toll booth and puts 1000 won in it. He loses control of his car as it drives on his own, and he wakes up in the past, back before he got married. He shortly learns after traveling back and forth in time that he can change it if he so desires. And that is what he does — he alters his path by making deliberate choices to end up where he wants to be and wakes up in the present time with a new wife, Hye-Won ( Kang Han-na ).

Familiar Wife is a K-drama that is heartfelt, focusing on the idea that if one could change their life willingly, would they ? Most time-traveling K-dramas start off with a funny introduction, where characters are confused or startled by the sudden change in atmosphere and era. However, Familiar Wife starts off rather dark, making the viewer feel uncomfortable or miserable due to the realism incorporated. But such is necessary in order to provide a meaningful K-drama, which is what Familiar Wife grows to be.

6 'Splash Splash Love' (2015)

Created by kim ji-hyun and song jae-jung.

Jang Dan-Bi ( Kim Seul-Gi ) is a high schooler preparing to take entrance exams, which will ultimately decide the fate of her future. The problem is, she is bad at math, and she doesn’t know what she wants for her future. When the day comes, Dan-Bi becomes too overwhelmed and runs off. She sits on a bench all by herself, praying for a different life, when suddenly she hears drums coming from a rain puddle. She examines it and falls in, finding herself in the Joseon period. There, she is hired by the King to train him in mathematics, among other things.

Splash Splash Love is a very fun show that has all the defining characteristics of K-drama , which means it's focused on the characters. Taking place in the Joseon period, the main characters of Splash Splash Love , Dan-Bi and Prince Lee Do (Yoon Doo-Joon), are a fun pair that play off each other very well! Viewers will appreciate the common tropes: a woman disguises herself as a man, the prince falls for the maiden, a jealous queen , and a quiet bodyguard. It’s short and sweet, and any fan of K-dramas will love this one.

5 'Rooftop Prince' (2012)

Created by lee hee-myung.

Crown Prince Lee Gak ( Park Yoochun ), from the Joseon era, wakes up in the middle of the night as he finds his wife, the Crown Princess ( Jeong Yu-Mi ), dead in the lake. Many assume that she tripped and fell into the pond, but Lee Gak knows – with the help of three special advisors – that she was murdered. While an investigation is underway, Rooftop Prince cuts to the present time, following Park-Ha ( Han Ji-Min ) as she travels back to Korea to meet with her blood father with whom she lost connection after her stepsister abandoned her and ignored her pleas for help. Then four Joseon men are then transported to the present time after being chased by masked assassins and jumping off a cliff. From there, Lee Gak and his crew learn to live in the modern world while trying to go back to the Joseon period.

Rooftop Prince is full of K-drama tropes that fans know and love. It deals with amnesia–attained by Park-Ha after an accident, and she finds herself unable to answer why she was separated from her family. Rooftop Prince also deals with evil, second-female leads, goofy scenarios, and gimmicky love triangles. It’s also a unique drama where characters jump to the present time as opposed to past eras , which is always refreshing to watch in a time-traveling K-drama. Anyone looking for mystery in their time-traveling K-dramas will enjoy this classic.

4 'The King: Eternal Monarch' (2020)

Created by kim eun-sook.

In modern-day Korea, there exist two parallel universes. One universe follows the everyday life of modern-day Seoul, where there are prime ministers and presidents. However, in the other universe, Korea is still run by a monarchy, though it exists under present-day advancements. One day, in an alternate reality of Korea, a young prince by the name of Lee Gon ( Lee Min-Ho ) watches his father be murdered by an Uncle, and he is next until a mysterious stranger saves him. Meanwhile, in present-day Korea, a detective by the name of Tae-Eul ( Kim Go-Eun ) investigates that same man – Lee Gon’s uncle – who shows up covered in blood. Years go by for Lee Gon, and he grows into a King who searches for the person who saved him. He travels to the parallel universe of present-day Korea through a portal, and he meets his savior, Tae-Eul.

Initially, the Netflix K-drama The King: Eternal Monarch might be a little confusing. It deals a lot with parallel universes, and the information can be overwhelming and confusing at first , considering this is one of the first times – if not the only time – that a K-drama explores a universe where modern-day Korea is still ruled under a monarchy. But the slow build-up is well worth the wait, as a romance is ignited between the two leads. It’s a K-drama with a unique twist that viewers will enjoy and appreciate.

Watch on Netflix

3 'Tunnel' (2017)

Created by lee eun-mi and choi jin-hee.

Unlike most time-traveling K-dramas that focus on historical eras, Tunnel i s a K-drama that takes place in a fairly recent time period. Detective Gwang-Ho ( Choi Jin Hyuk ) is investigating a string of murders in 1985 involving young women, and upon chasing the suspect through a tunnel, Gwang-Ho loses sight of the perpetrator. He is then knocked out by getting hit in the head. Gwang-Ho then wakes up and discovers soon after that he is no longer in 1985, but rather, thirty years in the future.

Tunnel is a thriller K-Drama that differs from a lot of time-traveling shows. The romance is a subplot to the main plot and doesn’t exist for the most part. Rather, Tunnel focuses on familial love . The murder plot is an exciting bonus that will keep viewers and fans on their feet as they try to determine who the serial killer is and how Gwang-Ho will return to the time he belongs in.

2 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo' (2016)

Created by tong hua.

Make-up artist Ha-Jin ( IU ) has just broken up with her boyfriend after catching him cheating on her with her best friend. Stuck in a slump, Ha-Jin sits out on a pier, drinking, when she sees a child drowning. She jumps in to save the child, and just as she swims to the surface after doing so, she is mysteriously pulled back down into the water. She then awakes in a hot water spring where several men are bathing. To her surprise, she finds out that she is in the Goryeo Dynasty, and the men she met were the Princes. She also eventually learns that she is no longer Ha-Jin but a woman named Hae-Soo who knows the princes well. With no way back home, Hae-Soo has to learn how to live in the Goryeo Dynasty and stay alive.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo is another fun K-drama that plays around with the concept of body-switching as opposed to teleporting into a different era . It includes several male leads that the viewer will fall in love with and several love triangles that viewers will love. Not to mention, the show has its dramatic moments that will have viewers on the verge of tears. Buy on Amazon

1 'Mr. Queen' (2020)

Created by park kye-ok.

Jang Bong-Hwan ( Choi Jin Hyuk ) is one of the youngest chefs at Blue House, with a dream to become the first chef who “feeds the strongest.” He has a perfectionist, self-centered nature, and because of his insanely high ego, he mishandles a meal prepared specially for the Chinese Ambassador. This results in Bong-Hwan being chased by Seoul police, and he falls head-first into a pool of water. Upon waking, he learns that he is no longer Bong-Hwan, but rather Princess Kim So-Yong of the Joseon period.

Not only is Mr. Queen a classic time travel K-drama that many viewers will fall in love with, but it also includes the infamous body-switching trope seen in many classics, such as Secret Garden . This K-drama is filled with mystery as viewers are left to uncover the secret behind the attempted murder of So-Yong and the controversies behind her character. Mr. Queen is a worthwhile watch filled with lots of humor, provided excellently by the narration of Choi Jin Hyuk.

Schitt’s Creek — David Rose and Patrick Brewer

Their story continues to progress from reconnections to first kisses and finally a marriage.

Cheers — Sam Malone and Diane Chambers

Sam Malone and Diane Chambers of Cheers ’ teased audiences with their sexual tension and fairweather relationship for the first five seasons that long was a series regular. The will-they-or-wont-they storyline was at the center of several season finale cliffhangers. After all the teasing however, viewers are left cold when Diane leaves Sam to pursue a writing career. Long would later return as a guest-star in the 1993 series finale to revive the trope.

Frasier — Niles Crane and Daphne Moon

Niles Crane and Daphne Moon from Frasier offer the sweetest representation of unrequited love ever portrayed on television. David Hyde Pearce plays the shy fumbling love sick Niles, who is hopelessly in love with his brother's housekeeper Daphne Moon, played by Jane Leeves. Audiences finally get a chance to swoon in season seven when the duo finally admit their feelings for one another.

Gilmore Girls — Luke Danes and Lorelai Gilmore

Luke Danes and Lorelai Gilmore of Gilmore Girls has to be one of the most agonizingly slow romances in TV history. Luke and Lorelai begin their friendship in Luke's diner and over time they begin to realize they have stronger feelings for each other. Audiences rejoice when the pair finally kiss in season four, which has been described as one of the best onscreen first kisses.

The X-files — Fox Mulder and Dana Scully

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully is one of the most frustratingly slow slow-burn romances in television history, often offering viewers just a glimmer of their feelings for one another with very little satisfaction. Dawson’s Creek — Pacey Witter and Joey Potter

Dawson's Creek leaned heavily into the Dawson-Joey pairing from the onset of the uber-popular teen drama. It may surprise you that despite all of Joey's pining over Dawson, she ends up with his best friend Pacey Witter. That is, however, how things would eventually play out. The love triangle was a big hit and even helped to revive the show's ratings as fans weighed in on who they thought best fit for the down-to-earth Potter. Initially, showrunner Kevin Williamson had planned to bring Dawson and Joey back together, that is until star Katie Holmes objected to the idea .

Friends — Ross Gellar and Rachel Green

Friends characters Ross Gellar and Rachel Green kept viewers coming back for more throughout the entire run of the hit 90s sitcom. The Office — Jim Halpert and Pam Beasley

Jim Halpert and Pam Beasley of The Office are arguably the sweetest slow-burn romance ever to grace the small screen. Their chemistry is palpable from the onset of the show, yet their relationship is plagued with obstacles, including, Pam's longtime fiance Roy, Jim's Stamford co-worker (and love interest) Karen, and Brian the boom-man to name a few.
