Dog is waiting for the owner on the railway platform

Packing smarter can make all the difference when loading up an overflowing trunk or trying to avoid a checked bag at the airport. But while you worry about making all your stuff more manageable, don’t forget that there’s likely a better solution for your canine traveling companion, too. If you’re still relying on a spare backpack or, worse yet, a plastic bag to carry your dog’s gear, you’re ready for the convenience of a dog travel bag.

With a bag designed for your pet, no space goes to waste. You’ll find dozens of clever designs to carry around your dog’s accessories, with many including on-the-go travel bowls to keep your pup content at each stop. You have numerous excellent options to consider and to help you cut straight to the most worthwhile products, follow our reviews of the ten best travel bags for dogs.

A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites in 2024

The 10 best travel bags for dogs, 1. mobile dog gear week away tote pet travel bag – best overall.

Mobile Dog Gear’s Week Away Tote is the ultimate travel bag, adding more unique features than the average carrier while using almost the same amount of space. With the larger option having two food bags capable of carrying up to 30 cups of kibble, it can handle everything from a weekend trip to the lake to a week-long out-of-town vacation.

Jet setters enjoy comprehensive features to facilitate travel with their pets. Like many dog travel bags, it meets most airline carry-on measurements, and the collapsible bowls and placemats fold up into the bag, storing efficiently to make feeding your dog quick and pain-free at every stop.

While the bag generally has a quality build, the only issue many consumers had involved the zippers easily breaking. Otherwise, the design is practical and effective. Several mesh pouches around the outside provide easy access and organization for frequently needed items. The Mobile Dog Gear bag makes the journey with your dog effortless and worry-free, earning our pick for the best overall travel bag for dogs.

  • Large food bag capacity
  • Several mesh storage pockets
  • Includes ID tag
  • Zippers break easily
  • Not water-resistant

2. PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag – Best Value

The PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag is the best travel bag for dogs for the money; it’s a low-priced, high-quality, and fully functional tote for all of your dog’s belongings. The storage pockets aren’t as numerous as those on some alternative bags, and it doesn’t have the plastic mat for the collapsible bowls, but there’s little you’ll miss out on otherwise with this airline-friendly carrier.

Rather than mesh pockets, the PetAmi bag’s exterior storage compartments use the same water-resistant Oxford covering, keeping all your accessories safe when caught in the rain. The only slight knock against the pockets involves the interior mesh pocket, which lacks a zipper and lets loose items fall out when opening the case.

  • Water-resistant outer cover
  • Leak-proof lining
  • Several color options
  • No mat for bowls
  • Inner mesh pocket doesn’t zip

3. Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack – Premium Choice

The stylish and multi-functional Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack keeps all your puppy’s materials easily accessible. Collapsible food bowls accompany a fold-down non-slip feeding mat and two food bags with space for up to five cups each.

With the undersized capacity, this bag is primarily for smaller dogs. But if you have a weekend getaway or camping trip planned, it could be the perfect solution for any pet. Small touches, like the quilted outer cover, dog bone ID tag, and built-in waste bag dispenser pocket at the front of the pack, elevate the design and enhance the comfort.

  • Waste bag dispensing pocket
  • Fashionable quilted cover
  • Small food bag capacity
  • Limited color options

4. Rubyloo Dog Travel Bag – Best for Puppies

Rubyloo’s The Original Doggy Bag™ promises to make travel more fun with its patented design and 100% lifetime warranty backing the well-built traveler. The water-resistant cover comes in five colors (including a cool camo print), has two collapsible bowls, and includes two food carriers that hold eight cups each.

The Rubyloo dog travel bag is comfortable to carry and supplies some of the best storage features to keep your items handy and secure. Alongside the removable primary compartment divider, you get a front pouch with a zippered pocket, a bottle storage side pocket, a mesh rear pocket to hold a couple of frisbees, and a side pocket with a waste bag dispenser.

  • Ample storage compartments
  • Waste bag dispenser
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Only one available size
  • Not ideal for larger dogs

5. Modoker Dog Travel Bag

The Modoker Dog Travel Bag leaves nothing out, ensuring you have the organization, flexibility, and dependable design you need to travel with confidence. Two closable front pockets join a mesh pocket covering the luggage sleeve, an elastic travel bottle side pocket, and a dual-zippered side pocket, letting you quickly retrieve tissues or dog waste bags.

While the water-resistant pack has plenty of features, a few minor issues prevent it from being the perfect travel bag for dogs. The small containers only fit a total of about 10 cups of food. It’s only ideal for short outings and weekend trips unless you have a small dog. The magnetic buttons on the front pocket also have more potential to come undone, so you must be careful about how you pack.

  • Versatile storage compartments
  • Zippered tissue/bag compartment
  • Small food containers
  • Magnetic clasps are less secure
  • Food bowl colors are random

6. Top Dog Pet Gear Dog Travel Bag

Top Dog Pet Gear’s Dog Travel Bag covers all the essentials at an excellent price point. Two food pouches carry 6.5 cups of food a piece, which is a relatively small amount compared to some other listed items. But if you have a small–medium dog, it could suit you perfectly for an entire week.

Everything is here except the bag dispenser and placemat for the bowls. A spacious magnetic front pocket accompanies a mesh back pocket, an elastic banded water bottle side pouch, and a zippered side pocket on the exterior. Inside the bag, the Velcro divider compartment divider and zippered mesh pocket efficiently store toys, grooming accessories, food, and more.

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Ideal size for small–medium dogs
  • No placemat for bowls

7. Teamoy Dog Travel Bag

The Teamoy Dog Travel Bag sets itself apart by adding an extra storage section for dog owners who aren’t enjoying enough organization from the traditional travel bag design. Sitting above the primary storage area is a compartment containing a large, zippered mesh pocket under the lid and three additional mesh pockets, giving you four more places to organize your dog’s leashes, toys, grooming tools, and other small items.

The substantial storage space should make you feel confident bringing dogs of any size on a multi-day excursion. And with the larger bag having containers capable of holding close to 30 cups of food, it provides plenty of room for your dog’s kibble and treats.

  • Extra storage compartment
  • Large food containers
  • Zippers prone to breakage

8. BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag

Quality combines with a hint of fashion in the BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag , featuring a durable, water-resistant Oxford outer cover in 12 unique color and print options. Available in two sizes, it has an ample food storage system for several days of adventures and an efficient arrangement that keeps it from feeling bulky.

While the overall construction quality is stout, the BAGLHER loses a few points for its small bowls, which are unlikely to suit a large dog, and the missing exterior rear pocket. Although it has a luggage sleeve, the bag lacks the wide pocket many packs feature, taking away substantial storage opportunities.

  • Durable build
  • Several unique colors and designs
  • Good food storage capacity
  • Small bowls
  • No rear pocket

9. ARCA PET Travel Backpack

The ARCA PET Travel Backpack is comfortable and classy, a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-carry pack that conveniently organizes your dog’s necessities. A single waterproof container efficiently stores up to 15 cups of food, and 11 unique pockets across the interior and exterior offer separate storage for all kinds of equipment. Although it isn’t as spacious as some other packs, it’s one of the easiest to haul around for a day or two.

  • Several storage compartments
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Relatively small capacity

10. beka. Dog Travel Bag

You won’t have to worry about forgetting a thing with the beka. Dog Travel Bag . Two large food storage containers can hold several days’ worth of food for even the heaviest dogs, and the added compartment up top gives you the extra pockets you need to keep all your pet’s items organized. Although the bowls may be too small for a large dog, the overall construction quality and thoughtful features make this one of the best values of any dog travel bag.

  • Only one size available

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Travel Bags for Dogs

Dog travel bags generally follow similar formulas to the point that you can expect certain features from nearly any product. Totes have food containers, collapsible bowls, and luggage sleeves, while almost every primary compartment uses a Velcro divider. In many areas, manufacturers try not to tinker with what already works. Still, there are a few ways you can distinguish travel bags and make the best choice for your dog and traveling style.

Keeping all your dog’s toys stored comfortably in your bag is a top goal for any owner. Checking the bag’s dimensions and capacity will ensure you can pack everything you need for a multi-day outing.

Some bags offer their internal storage capacity in liters for you to compare. But you can also glean a certain amount by comparing the bag’s exterior dimensions. Sizing is critical for planning your traveling as well. Although most bags are airline-friendly, the slight variations in sizing could be the difference in whether you can add that extra towel or hair brush.

Food Storage Containers

Food storage containers are water-resistant, lined pouches that typically come with travel bags for dogs. They have handles and wipe down easily with a damp cloth. Although the design doesn’t change much, the capacity will, with some capable of holding enough food for over a week and others only handling less than a weekend’s worth.

The number of cups of food that will fit in each container can vary slightly depending on the kibble size. If you can’t find the capacity for the food bags, you can compare their dimensions to get a rough idea of how much they’ll hold.

Two bowls typically come with the pack, with some including a folding placemat. The collapsible bowls usually consist of BPA-free silicone, compressing in for easy storage in the bag, though you can find some bags with bulkier, non-collapsible bowls made of lightweight stainless steel. Plastic bowls should also have a hook hole for a carabiner. Regardless of whether the pack includes the small carabiners, the hanging loop allows you to store your food bowls on the bag strap hook to free up space inside.

If you have a larger dog, prioritize travel bags with wider bowl sizes. Too many consumers buy a pack without considering their 100-pound dog’s needs in this department and end up with an enormous challenge getting them to eat out of undersized bowls. While small dogs can eat out of almost anything comfortably, a 5-inch-wide dog dish won’t be feasible for a dog with a large snout. The bowl size is one reason Mobile Dog Gear’s bag shines: it has 7-inch-wide square bowls.

Special Features

Dog travel bags can sometimes seem like the same product with different labels. The best travel bags for dogs subscribe to similar tried-and-true versatile features, but with a closer look, you can find notable differences beyond the bag’s size.

  • First aid kit (these usually do not contain the first aid materials)
  • Poop bag/wipe dispenser
  • Feeding placemat
  • Treat pouch

Don’t discount the importance of the color, either. Fitting alongside the rest of your luggage, dog travel bags should ideally be an aesthetic match. If the detailed specs aren’t overly critical to your decision, explore the surprising array of bag colors, patterns, and prints to personalize the look and create your style.

Types of Packs

You have two essential styles of dog travel bags available : a tote or a backpack. Totes generally offer the most capacity, exterior storage pockets, and convenient access to anything you need due to their squat and wide shapes. You will usually have three transporting options: a carrying handle, removable shoulder straps, and a sleeve to fix the bag around the pull-up handle on your rolling luggage. A tote is ideal for multi-day trips and the most convenient for storing in a car’s trunk or on an airplane as a carry-on or personal item.

Backpacks are generally taller than they are wide, meaning you may have to go digging if you leave a toy at the bottom of the bag. Exterior storage pockets are often more limited in size and amount. Still, you’ll get many of the same essential features that totes have, such as the collapsible food bowls.

While totes are superior to backpacks for functional storage, backpacks are the most comfortable and convenient. If you plan to go on hikes or short weekend getaways and want to keep your gear on hand without it being cumbersome, a backpack is the way to go.

With a well-rounded set of features, including ample storage capacity, large bowls, and a sturdy build, the Mobile Dog Gear Week Away travel bag will reliably suit dogs of any size and offer the ultimate travel experience. For those looking for great deals, PetAmi and Top Dog deliver affordable, high-quality designs, while Modoker and BAGLHER supply a slew of colorful packs to help you stay fashionable. Follow our shopping tips and reviews of the best travel bags for dogs to ensure your next trip goes off without a hitch.

  • A Quick Look at Our Favorites in 2024
  • The 10 Best Dog Travel Bags
  • 1. PetAmi Dog Travel Bag – Best Overall

PetAmi Dog Travel Bag

While backpacks tend to offer more comfort and convenience when carrying them, they don’t offer as much space, compartmentalization, or stability as handled tote organizers like the PetAmi Dog Travel Bag .

The PetAmi comes in a good range of colors and designs and has two main compartments within the bag. One holds the two food containers that are included with your purchase, and the other similarly sized compartment can be used to hold blankets, coats, and other larger items. Multiple pockets also provide space for leashes, toys, and more. As well as the food containers, the bag also includes two collapsible bowls. The whole bag has a capacity of 22 liters (6 gallons), which should include enough room to hold food for a few days, but you may need something larger if you’re going away for a week or more.

The reasonable cost, decent size, and convenient and intelligent compartmental design of the bag make this the best available dog travel bag, but the cloth food containers are a challenge to clean, and the mesh pockets tend to leak their contents when you open the top.

  • Compartmental design keeps everything in place
  • Includes two food storage containers and two bowls
  • Plenty of pockets and compartments
  • Food containers are tricky to clean
  • Top pockets could do with being zippered
  • 2. Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag – Best Value

Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag Accessories Supplies Organizer

The Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag has a very similar design to that of the PetAmi above, but it does have a smaller capacity of approximately 16 liters (4 gallons), compared to the 22 of the PetAmi. However, it is very competitively priced, being one of the cheapest options on this list, and it has some good features.

The main section of the bag holds the included food storage containers and can be used for coats or blankets and leashes. There are also multiple pockets and the top pocket of the Bundaloo is zippered so everything stays in place. This bag also includes two collapsible containers.

It is small and is best suited to small breed dogs for day trips or, at a stretch, a weekend away. If you’re traveling any longer than this, you will need to take additional food in separate containers or use Ziplock bags. However, the low cost and the well-laid-out design make the Bundaloo the best dog travel bag for the money.

  • Very competitively priced
  • Plenty of pockets, including a zippered pocket at the top
  • Includes two storage containers and two collapsible bowls
  • 3. Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe – Premium Choice

Mobile Dog Gear, Dog Travel Bag

Backpacks are more convenient for carrying, which makes them ideal for hiking or camping trips, and also if you have a number of bags to carry. The load is spread across the bag and your hands are left free to carry other bags or to hold your dog’s leash. Although they tend to be smaller than handbags, this isn’t true of the Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe . Its 24-liter capacity means it can carry more than the PetAmi and the Bundaloo above. It includes two food carriers and two collapsible bowls, and it also includes a placemat and is made from heavy-duty polyester to prevent damage and prolong its life.

It does have one large pocket, but if you want something with compartments this deluxe bag may not be the best choice. The design won’t be to everybody’s taste, either, plus the Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe is expensive.

  • The backpack is easy to carry
  • Includes two food containers and two collapsible bowls
  • Hardwearing design
  • Only one pocket
  • 4. ARCA PET Travel Bag – Best for Puppies

Travel Bag for Dog Backpack

If you’re traveling with a puppy, you don’t necessarily need as much storage space as you do for an adult dog, but you do still need plenty of space for food and bowls, while also having your hands free to be able to walk or, more likely, carry the puppy.

As such, a backpack design is your best option, and this ARCA PET travel bag , with 18 liters of carrying capacity, has enough room for puppy provisions while also being easy and comfortable to carry around. As well as the main compartment, it has pockets on either side, a double pocket on the back, and a pocket and poop bag or wipe dispenser on the front. It also includes one food storage container and two collapsible bowls.

The pockets are convenient, but because there are so many, they do reduce the amount of space in the main compartment of the bag and because you end up packing the main bag itself, there can be a problem with the stitching of the seams bursting. For a small dog or puppy with limited carrying requirements, though, it is a good quality bag for convenient carrying.

  • Plenty of pockets for organization
  • Includes a poop bag dispenser pocket
  • Lightweight and easy to carry
  • Main compartment feels small
  • Seam stitching can burst if the bag is overfilled
  • 5. Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag

Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag

Taking your dog on a plane means you will need provisions for the journey, and ideally, these need to be on hand so that you can give your dog food and water when required. An airline travel bag needs to be big enough that it can hold everything you need but not so large or awkwardly shaped that it won’t be allowed on as hand luggage.

The Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag measures 16 x 14 inches so it will fit under airline seats and should be accepted by all airlines. It includes two waterproof food containers and two collapsible food bowls. It has a large pocket on the front, pockets on either side, and a poop bag dispenser, which can be very convenient when you take your dog for a toilet break outside the airport.

The bag can also sit conveniently over extended baggage handles so it can be stacked on the trolley or while walking. It is a little more expensive than some of the alternatives, and although it can be worn as a backpack it isn’t comfortable to do so, but it is a well-sized bag that is very well suited for taking on airplanes.

  • Airline-approved bag fits under plane seats
  • Include two food containers and two collapsible bowls
  • Can be stacked and carried with other luggage
  • Not comfortable as a backpack
  • 6. Lekesky Dog Travel Bag

Lekesky Dog Travel Bag Airline Approved

The 25-liter (6-gallon) Lekesky Dog Travel Bag is also airline compliant, fits under airline seats, and can be hooked around luggage handles. It has multiple pockets and side pockets, a poop bag dispenser, and includes two food containers and two collapsible bowls. It can be worn as a backpack and its dimensions mean that it is comfortable to do so. This one also comes with a placemat which can be rolled or folded and stored inside the bag when not in use.

If you opt for the gray design, it costs less than the purple bag, too. It is a sturdy bag, rather than one with collapsible sides, and because it retains its shape it is convenient for storing and moving, but something softer might prove more comfortable on the back.

  • Airline compatible
  • Decent price for the gray backpack
  • Includes food storage containers and collapsible bowls
  • Sturdy design not the most comfortable for carrying on the back
  • 7. Tidify Dog Travel Bag

Dog Travel Bag Airline Approved Travel Set

Dog travel bags need to be portable, so they are easy to carry, while still offering enough room to carry whatever you need. The size of the bag you need will ultimately be determined by how many accessories and items your dog takes away, but also by the amount it eats and the length of time you’re going away for.

The Tidify Dog Travel Bag is large, with a 33-liter (8.5-gallon) capacity, and it offers plenty of pockets so that you can organize the items you take, but it is quite cumbersome. It comes with two food containers and two collapsible bowls, and a large front pocket that opens out to provide a feeding mat. It is also reasonably priced, considering what it includes and the size.

The bag includes a first-aid pouch, but this doesn’t include any first-aid items and is really just a pouch with first-aid written on it and a checklist of items to include.

  • Large capacity
  • Good price for the size
  • First-aid pouch doesn’t include any first-aid items
  • May be too large for some
  • 8. Unique Dog Travel Bag

Travel Bag - Dog Traveling Luggage Set

The Unique Dog Travel Bag is something of a luxury travel bag and does cost a little more than most of the alternatives. However, rather than the silicone folding bowls, it has two stainless steel bowls. It also has an elevated dog bowl stand located in the front pocket, and it comes with a first-aid pouch and two food storage containers.

Although stainless steel bowls are better quality than silicone folding bowls, they are very small, and your dog will likely need multiple bowls. Because they are made of metal and don’t fold, they also take up more room than collapsible bowls. The elevated feeder is a unique touch, but it won’t be suitable for aggressive eaters who will easily topple the bowl and cause a mess.

The product is a good idea and has some good features, but it may be more convenient to replace the metal bowls with collapsible ones and ensure that the bag is full when using the elevated feeder.

  • Stainless steel bowls are sturdier than collapsible silicone ones
  • Elevated feeder is good for some dogs
  • Bowls take up more room
  • Bag can fall over when your dog is eating from the elevated bowls
  • 9. Modoker Dog Travel Bag

Modoker Dog Travel Bag

The Modoker Dog Travel Bag has nearly 30 liters (8 gallons) of capacity and multiple pockets, including one bag dispenser. It also has an internal Velcro divider and includes two food storage containers and two collapsible bowls. The travel bag is a little expensive for its size, although you do get all the accessories you need.

Although the bag is sturdy and seems well built, the Velcro divider is prone to moving around and the magnetic pocket sealer also tends to pop open, especially if the bag is full.

  • Includes food containers and collapsible bowls
  • Magnetic pocket catches are prone to popping open
  • Velcro divider is prone to coming loose
  • 10. The Original Doggy Bag Backpack By Rubyloo

The Original Doggy Bag™ Backpack by Rubyloo

If you enjoy taking your dog on day trips or out hiking with you, you will want a backpack that is lightweight and easy to carry. It doesn’t necessarily need the huge capacity that some of the travel bags offer but you can still benefit from the portability of the bag and the convenience of being able to carry food, treats, and other items.

The Original Doggy Bag Backpack by Rubyroo is a backpack with just 18 liters (4.5 gallons) of capacity so it won’t be suitable for weekends away, even, but the single food bag can be used to carry enough for one or two meals, and the two collapsible bowls can be used for water and food. There’s also a treat bag and the backpack has a poop bag dispenser at the bottom, making it easy to grab and go.

The backpack is comfortable and handy for days out, but it is a little expensive for its size and you will want something larger for anything longer than a day out.

  • Easily accessible poop bag dispenser
  • Includes a treat bag
  • Small capacity only suitable for a day out
  • Expensive for its size
  • Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Dog Travel Bags

A dog travel bag is really just a tote bag or a backpack , but it typically includes multiple pockets and maybe an internal wall or compartment that can be used to enhance organization. In most cases, dog travel bags also include collapsible bowls and dog food storage containers, and you can find some that have features like poop bag dispensers or even an elevated feeding platform. Although many of the bags look similar, there are some important features to consider to ensure that you get a bag that is best suited to your requirements and those of your dog.

Caucasian woman walking outdoors with dog jack russell terrier in a special backpack.

There are many types of dog travel bags and general bags available, but the two most common and beneficial are the tote organizer and the backpack. These offer decent storage while still being easy to transport.

  • Tote Organizer: The tote organizer tends to be square or rectangular and has a large internal compartment that is used to store the majority of provisions and items. The design of the bag means that it is typically carried in the hand using two handles, although some do include a shoulder strap and may also have backpack-type straps. These usually offer the most carrying capacity and are especially convenient for putting the trunk or sliding under the seat of a plane.
  • Backpack: Backpacks are convenient because they can be slung over one shoulder or strapped over both shoulders, spreading the weight and making them easier to carry. However, what they offer in convenience and comfort, they tend to lose in capacity and organization. Best suited to day trips and if you need to keep your hands free, for example, to carry a puppy or to hold a dog leash, these are portable and convenient.
  • Dimensions & Capacity

Whatever style of bag, you will need to consider the dimensions and capacity of the bag to ensure that it will carry everything you need. At the very least, a dog travel bag will usually be used to carry food, leashes, and a toy or two. It may also carry a dog coat, blanket, water bottle, and food bowls, according to your activities and how long you are packing for. Up to 30 liters (8 gallons) can be considered a good size for a weekend, or perhaps a few days for a smaller dog breed, and if you need more space than this, you might need to consider alternative arrangements or having an additional storage bag for extra food and supplies.

The vast majority of dog travel bags include collapsible bowls. These are silicone and they concertina down to a frisbee shape. They take up very little room in the bag, but they can be small and they won’t last forever. If you do find a bag that includes stainless steel bowls , these bowls are stronger but they don’t fold down, so they take up a lot more room in the bag. They also have to be quite small to fit in the bag so they won’t hold too much food.

  • Food Storage Containers

As well as food bowls, many of the bags include food storage containers . These enable you to store dry food, are usually waterproof, and negate the need to use plastic bags and other storage methods. Many of the bags on our list above include two containers, which means that you can fill one for a short trip and use the rest of the space for additional storage or fill both if you are away for a few days.

  • Poop Bag Dispenser

While food bowls and containers are quite commonplace, one feature that is less prevalent is a poop bag dispenser. These take the place of a small pocket. You can put a roll of poop bags inside and then pull a single bag from the dispenser, as needed, so you don’t have to open the bag and search for the roll every time.

woman holding a used dog poop bag

While most of the bags have large central bags that can be used to hold a selection of items, you will usually find at least one external pocket as well. External pockets are handy for keeping items that you need quick access to, like a leash or treats. And, you can even put your car keys in one of the pockets, as long as it has a zipper or other secure fastening.

  • Do You Need a Dog Travel Bag?

A dog travel bag is really just a standard bag with compartments and other storage solutions, as well as the usual inclusion of travel bowls . If you have a decent backpack or another bag that offers enough room, you don’t really need to buy a separate, dedicated dog travel bag. However, in the same way that a lot of new parents have dedicated changing bags, having a go bag for your dog so that it is ready to travel or head out with you whenever you want, is a good idea.

PK paw divider

There are a surprising number of dog travel bags available, including both tote and backpack designs, and with a wide variety of dimensions and volumes. There are those with travel bowls and even one or two with permanent stainless-steel bowls.

Above, we have included reviews of 10 of the best dog travel bowls and found the Petami Dog Travel Bag to offer the best compromise of capacity and portability at a reasonable price. For value hunters, though, it is the Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag that appeals, although it is quite a small bag and may only be suitable for dogs with small appetites.

The best dog carrier bag for you depends on your specific needs. Choosing your dog’s travel bag depends on a number of factors, including the size and weight of your dog, the length of your trip, and the type of transportation you’ll be using.

Going on week long trips or car trips? Then you’ll want a bag that’s big enough to provide plenty of space for your dog to move around and stay comfortable.

How about weekend trips or air travel?  Then a more compact bag that can fit easily under the seat in front of you would be best suited. Whichever type of bag you choose, be sure to look for one with plenty of padding to protect your dog from bumps and jolts.

But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Check out our top picks of 2022 below.

There are so many products for dogs: collars, kibble, harnesses, treats, balls, toys, blankets, the list goes on and on. When you travel with your dog whether it’s just a day trip or a week long holiday you need to bring along your pet gear and finding the right bag to keep all of your dog stuff together can be quite the challenge. It’s a great idea for all dog owners to get a dog specific travel bag to organise all of your dog products and have them ready to go for any trip.

I have looked at and reviewed lots of dog gear travel bags and after some evaluation have narrowed it down to the best ones according to best quality product, best value and best design. I have also sorted it out into three categories: backpack, suitcase and shoulder bag designs.

Note: These bags are not dog carrier bags. Dogs do not get inside these bags and get carried around like a crate. They are for carrying dog supplies and gear.

Why Buy A Dog Gear Travel Bag?

If you are always travelling with your dog whether that is by plane or a road trip, investing in a good quality dog gear organiser bag is a must. It can make the travelling process so much easier for you and your dog rather than lugging around an old unorganised bag.

A pet bag can organise all of your dog’s important supplies including food, treats and toys as well as important dog paperwork including vaccination and medical resources.

It can also make a great gift for a dog owner friend who often travels with their dog. They probably haven’t thought of investing in one of these bags. It would make a really unique present.

Features To Consider In A Dog Travel Gear Bag

  • Stored size. When you’re not travelling you need to store your dog travel bag in your house and not everyone has an abundance of space. Definitely consider the size specifications of your bag before you buy it and make sure you have a good spot to store it.
  • Machine washable. Anything around dogs will get dirty and this of course applies for dog gear travel bags. Look for machine washable bags so you can easily keep your bag clean.
  • Compartments. Look for bags with multiple compartments so you can organise your dog products into their own sections. I would suggest one with at least 3 sections so you can organise your gear into food, toys and walking gear (collars, harnesses and leashes) sections.
  • Closings. Different bags have different closings, some don’t close at all. Look for bags that do close, especially ones that use zippers or velcro.
  • Waterproof/water resistant. Some bags are waterproof or water resistant. This is good if you are travelling for a holiday where you are mainly outdoors taking part in activities such as swimming, camping or hiking.
  • Food carrier bags. This is the feature that makes a dog gear bag different from any normal bag. They usually come with little bags specifically for carrying your dog’s food.
  • Included products. Most of these dog gear bags come with included products such as dog bowls, toys, blankets and first aid kits. Look for bags that have products that you don’t already own.

Dog Gear Packing List

  • Car safety restraints e.g. dog seat belt
  • Dog Food. This seems so obvious but so many people forget to pack dog food because they are so used to the routine of going to the kitchen or cupboard where you store the kibble and dishing it out there and then.
  • First aid kit
  • Information Folder with dog’s vaccinations, medical records and emergency contact numbers
  • Travel water bottle

Traveling with your dog or cat can get overwhelming for both of you. On top of many pets having travel anxiety or getting motion sickness, they also get bored, have to use the bathroom, and get hungry and thirsty on the road. Whether you're traveling by car, plane, boat, or train (or even just going for a hike), you'll want to stock up on the top pet travel accessories to make you and your furry friend's experience a heck of a lot more enjoyable.

To get expert recommendations and tips for traveling with a pet, we spoke with Dr. Gina Rendon, medical director at Williamsburg Vet Clinic in Brooklyn, New York, and Dr. Catriona Love, medical director at Mercer Street Veterinary Hospital in Seattle, Washington. They shared important safety and logistical tips for traveling with your pet.

We also took recommendations from Travel + Leisure editors, did extensive research, and reviewed 131 products across seven different tests including ones for dog car seats, cat carriers, GPS collars, and more. Before you take your next trip with your pet, check out these travel accessories that will make vacations with the whole family run smoothly.

Best Airline-approved Dog Backpack Carrier

Mr. peanut's aspen series airline approved backpack pet carrier.

  • Performance 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

Your pet will get great ventilation and views with mesh windows on all four sides.

The narrow width/height may not provide enough space for some dogs.

If you need an airline-approved pet carrier , this petite backpack-style dog carrier makes traveling hands-free with your dog a breeze. The thoughtful details stood out during testing, including several built-in pockets for storing treats, your phone, or waste bags. We also found the side water bottle pocket and laptop sleeve convenient. The interior is fleece-lined for your dog’s comfort, and there is a leash tether for security. Mesh on all four sides gives your pup a breathable space with all-sides peekability — two factors that can help comfort anxious travelers. This backpack is slim enough to fit under even the narrowest of under-seat space on a plane, but with only seven inches of interior floor width (as stated by the manufacturer, it’s made for smaller dogs). The padded backpack straps are easily adjustable, and you can also belt in the backpack with the handy seat belt attachment.

Best Dog Car Seat

Away the pet carrier.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

It looks as good as it performs — and it has pet safety certification.

Minimal mesh paneling may be claustrophobic for some pets.

The Away Pet Carrier is a generous glow-up from the traditional pet carrier. Clean lines give this carrier a modern profile and silhouette, while the all-black color gives it an edge against the competition. We love this carrier not just for its looks, but also how it performs. Details like a water-resistant lining, removable plush bedding with a reinforced bottom, a retractable privacy screen, and loads of pockets and storage areas keep pets and pet parents happy. This carrier is also one of four pet carriers certified by the Center for Pet Safety for use in the backseat of your car. We tested this on a 12-hour car ride with a 6-pound dog who does not typically like car rides, and the dog seemed comfortable and secure, sleeping for almost the entire ride. It’s worth noting that there is limited mesh paneling (only on the top and one side), which may cause some pets to get claustrophobic and/or limit breathability in some situations.

Best Car Seat Cover for Dogs

Urpower dog car seat cover.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 5 /5

It is easy to install and has high sides for full protection of your car and pet.

It’s got fixed measurements, so be sure it’ll line up correctly with your car’s backseat space.

Road tripping with your pet? Polyester and 600D PVC material keep this hammock-style cover sturdy, durable, and waterproof — and your backseat spotless. We thought installation was painless, but take note if the fixed measurements and anchor strap placement fits with your car before buying. We love the high all-sides protection this cover provides so you don’t have to worry about cleaning up any shedding or mess from the floor, doors, or seatbacks — or your pet crawling up into the front seat. Cleaning the cover is as easy as wiping it down with a damp cloth. A purposeful design includes slots for accessing seat belt bases so you can clip in your pet for the ride, a nonslip rubber backing for stability when on the move, and a storage pocket with a Velcro closure for pet essentials. It comes in seven neutral color options, including a multi-colored paw print pattern and two black variations with orange accents.

Best Portable Pet Bowl

Maxbone go portable bowls.

Maxbone

It’s a stylish silicone pet bowl that you can roll up and toss into your bag.

The bowl size may be more of a snack size for larger pets.

This roll-up, two-in-one silicone pet bowl set is our favorite way to feed our pets on the road and gives us one less thing to keep track of while in transit. Each set comes with two bowls approximately five by two inches that are connected to a larger flat mat measuring 15.4 by 9.3 inches. The bowls are more like walled wells, and each holds around two-and-a-half cups. We tried this out with a dog who loves to splash, but the built-in placement and the way the bowls are attached mat them virtually spill proof (anytime the dog did scoop out food or spill water, the silicone mat would catch it). We also found the soft silicone veasy to clean with soap and water, and we love how quickly it dries — two big pluses when you’re on the move. The fact that you can easily roll up the mat and stick these bowls into your pet’s carrier or a tote also scores big in our books. Plus, the geometric design of the bowls adds an element of style to a product that is usually bland. These Maxbone Go! Portable Bowls are also available in contemporary colors like mint, pale yellow, peach, and sand.

Best Dog Food Storage

Iris airtight food storage container.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Performance 2 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Easy to Clean 5 /5

Both containers have easy-to-load, flip-top lids that snap shut.

The larger sizes may not be suitable for all types of trips.

This double-decker food storage container is an ideal way to keep your dog’s kibble fresh while on the road. We were big fans of the top-loading, flip-top lids and how well they stayed sealed shut when put to the test. Cleaning just takes a little bit of soap and water, though you’ll want to make sure the inside is completely dry before closing the lid to avoid mildew from moisture. The 35-pound capacity is great for longer trips or multiple dogs, and the wheely bottoms mean no heavy lifting. We also like that there’s an included scoop. While it may not be small enough to take on the plane, the top container can easily fit into the backseat or trunk of a car.

Best Cat Carrier

Maskeyon airline approved pet carrier.

  • Portability 4 /5

All sides can expand, but it still folds flat for easy storage.

The 19.5-inch length won’t be able to fly on several airlines.

Whether you’re heading to Vermont or the vet’s office, this expandable cat carrier is a smart way to give your cat a little extra space to lounge while you wait. We love that each side has an accordion-style, scratch-proof mesh expansion window, giving maximum configuration customization options. We transported a cat to the vet with all of the flaps folded in and then laid her out on a bench with some flaps unzipped when we got to the waiting room for extra space. Three exterior pockets keep travel essentials handy, and you have three zippered access and loading points, including from the top. This carrier can hold up to 20 pounds of cat, and you can carry it via built-in handles or a detachable shoulder strap. A soft-lined interior panel keeps kitty comfy, and it’s removable and machine-washable. The exterior is waterproof and wipes clean. The Maskeyon Airline Approved Pet Carrier is somewhat of a misnomer, though — its length exceeds several soft pet carrier requirements on a handful of airlines, including Delta, American Airlines, and United.

Best Dog Crate

Petmate pet kennel.

  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

The metal grate is secure but super simple to open and close.

The small plastic handle makes it challenging to balance weight, especially if your dog is moving around inside.

This old-school dog crate carrier is a hardside option for transporting your pup. Assembly is quick and requires no tools, and there’s a small plastic carry handle. We like this carrier because it’s lightweight but sturdy and kept our pet secure during transport. It’s a bare-bones crate, but there’s enough room to put down a cushion or add your pup’s favorite toy. You can load dogs through the front gate or the top gate, both of which have a simple and easy pinch-and-lock feature. This crate is designed to hold up to 15 pounds of pup, but be warned that it can be difficult to balance weight sometimes since the plastic handle is small and placed at the center of the top.

Best Grooming Wipes

Floof renewing wipes.

They are biodegradable and don’t have a strong scent.

Don’t use these around your dog’s eyes or inside their ears — everywhere else is fair game.

These biodegradable, hypoallergenic cleansing wipes are a go-to grab that can function as a quick way to get rid of dirt and bacteria between baths or simply after a walk. Made from bamboo and other natural ingredients like soothing aloe and chamomile, these wipes are as good for the environment as they are for your pet. They are gentle enough to use from nose to tail (just avoid eyes and inside the ears), and we love that we don’t have to worry about dogs getting sick if they happen to lick an area that’s just been wiped. One of our editors keeps a pack stashed in their dog’s carrier to clean his paws after walks or to give a light, impromptu, all-over bath anytime on the go. Wipes come in 30-sheet packs with a plastic snap closure to seal in moisture, and they’re small enough to tuck into the pocket of your pet carrier for easy access.

Best GPS Collar

Link link smart pet wearable.

  • Accuracy 5 /5
  • Design 4 /5

It also works as a behavioral training device.

It requires a subscription to use.

Think of the Link Smart Pet Wearable Tracker as the Fitbit for dogs. This wearable takes GPS to the next level by also adding health and activity monitoring and behavioral training capabilities via sounds and vibrations. Plus, it works by transmitting location through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile signals for the most accurate location information. You need to download an app, and we found it easy to set up and navigate. We were impressed by how accurate the tracking was through Google Maps, pinpointing not only the dog’s exact address, but also the specific area of the house she was moving through. This will be incredibly useful for travel or hiking with dogs. Owners will get alerts when their dog has moved beyond boundaries, and they can also set up temperature alerts, turn on the built-in flashlight through the app, and do real-time checks on health symptoms. There’s even a step counter. The catch? You’ll need a subscription for this wearable to work. Subscriptions have three options; monthly, yearly, and two-year. This wearable comes with two attachment options and a wall charger.

Best Dog Seat Belt

Kurgo direct to seat belt tether for dogs.

It puts the bulk of the pull against your dog's body, not their neck.

It is not compatible with certain models of trucks.

Unlike many dog seat belts, the Kurgo Direct to Seat Belt Swivel Tether for Dogs clips directly into your car's seat belt fastener versus looping around the headrest. This tether is designed to attach to a dog harness instead of a collar, centering the pull of the tether on your dog's torso rather than their neck. The swivel-head carabiner harness attachment also allows your pet to move around without getting tangled. While this car seat tether works with most cars, it is incompatible with the seat belt fasteners in Ford F-series trucks.

Best Cooling Jacket

Ruffwear swamp cooler dog harness.

It also fits medium or large cats.

You can’t put this in the dryer.

A top pet travel tip from Dr. Rendon is to "be mindful and plan for the temperatures of the places to which you are traveling" and prepare accordingly. Bring coats and booties if it's cold and cooling mats or vests if it's hot. The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler Dog Cooling Harness functions as an evaporative cooling vest and lightweight harness that stays wet to keep your pet up to six times cooler in high temps. Triple-layer cooling panels — wicking outer layer, absorbing middle layer, and an inner dry layer — are located along the chest, stomach, and back. A padded, quick-grab handle allows you to assist your pet easily when needed. Plus, the simple and intuitive side-buckle design makes it a snap to get on and off. The harness's aluminum V-ring clips and reinforced loops can hold up to the demands of rugged outdoor adventures. Bonus? The XXS size was a perfect fit for my medium-size, heat-intolerant (and harness-trained) cat. When it's time to clean, it calls for the gentle cycle and air dry only.

Best Heating Mat

K&h pet products heated thermo-kitty bed.

The heat level adjusts to your pet's body temperature.

It's too small for medium-to-large dogs.

To continue on the theme of preparing for the weather, you can keep your cat or small dog toasty with the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat. The insertable dual thermostat heater is designed to warm up only when your pet lays on top. From there, it adjusts the heat level to your pet's internal temperature so it's always just right. This is a great travel pet accessory to take camping, on car rides in cold temperatures, or for accommodations without central heating. This bed is big enough for any size cat and small dogs.

Best Dog Boots

Ruffwear grip trex dog boots.

They provide great grip and heat protection.

The low-ankle design may cause paws to get wet in snow.

Ruffwear Grip Trex Dog Boots are high-quality, rubber-soled dog boots that protect your pet's paws on rugged terrain, hot rocks and sidewalks, and frosty or salted paths. Some owners even use these boots indoors on slippery hardwood floors thanks to the heavily textured Vibram outsoles. The actual shoes are made from mesh, giving your dog's paws a bit of breathing room in hot climates. The gusset design makes it easy to take these shoes off and on. While these shoes work well on salted pavement and in freezing temperatures (with socks), the short-rise design isn't ideal for walks in more than an inch or so of snow.

Best Water Bottle

Kalimdor dog water bottle.

The handy design and size also works for cats.

Some pets may not be comfortable drinking out of this unfamiliar shape.

Heat, stress, and anxiety may cause your pet to become thirstier and more dehydrated than usual. For trips with her small chihuahua, Dr. Love prefers the Kalimdor Portable Dog Water Bottle because of its small size and leak-proof design. This one-handed, two-in-one design has a plastic bottle base that can store up to 19 ounces of water (most bottles only hold up to 16 ounces). The scooped-out top functions as a water bowl that holds up to 2.8 ounces of water. Liquid is released directly into the drinking area by unlocking a switch and pushing a button. You can recollect any unused water in the storage bottle instead of tossing it out. The compact design makes it easy to carry in a travel bag or backpack, or you can loop it around your wrist. Our one note is that we wish this had a built-in filter.

Best Portable Litter Box

Travel cat porta pawty.

You don't have to toss out the litter at every stop.

The collapsible design translates to weak sides.

Finding a decent travel litter box is one of the biggest challenges of traveling with a cat. The Travel Cat Porta-Pawty Travel Litter Box solves multiple problems, including wasting litter. The zippered top and built-in side handle enables you to scoop and go, reusing the same lot of litter along multiple stops. Its construction also helps to block odors, which makes stays at pet-friendly hotels more comfortable for everyone involved. The top-flap design and standard litter box dimensions (19 by 14 by 5 inches) give your cat sufficient room to do their business. The seamless, leak-proof interior is a cinch to clean, and when you're not using the bag, it collapses, folds, and snaps into a rectangle that measures 9.75 by 8.5 by 4 inches. Litter helps the collapsible walls of this box stay up and sturdy, so don't hold back when filling it up.

Best Calming Supplement

Vetoquinol zylkene behavior.

It has a natural, non-sedative calming effect.

It may not be enough to calm some pets.

According to Dr. Rendon, "Zylkene calming supplements are derived from milk protein and recommended by behaviorists." They can be used for cats or dogs and are a good option for owners who want to try over-the-counter remedies before getting a sedating prescription like Gabapentin or Trazodone from their vet. This supplement's active ingredient, alpha-casozepine, has natural calming properties. Although it's derived from cow's milk, it is lactose-free. The dosage is administered according to weight and can be given in its original capsule form or as a powder mixed into food by opening the capsules. Dr. Rendon recommends starting the supplements a few days before travel. Every pet is different, and Zylkene may not be effective on some animals.

Best First-aid Kit

Adventure medical kits me & my dog.

It's a first-aid kit for both you and your dog.

It only covers four days of basic medical needs.

Love hiking with your dog or running on the beach together? Or do you just want to be prepared for everyday outing accidents? This first-aid kit is a two-in-one medical kit you can keep in your car or toss in your backpack before an outdoor adventure. It comes with two separate pouches of medical supplies — one for you and one for your dog — that can cover basic first-aid needs like splinter and tick removal, wound irrigation, cuts and scrapes, and more. There are enough supplies in each kit to last one person and one dog up to four days. Even though it comes with how-to medical guides, it's not meant for severe injuries.

We combed through results from seven different pet product tests to find some of the recommendations in this roundup, specifically looking for the most travel-friendly options. We tested over 130 pet products, including dog food storage containers, dog backpack carriers, dog car seats, car seat covers, cat carriers, dog crates, and GPS collars. Some staple attributes we tested for in each category included design, performance, value, and ease of use. For carriers, crates, and backpacks, we introduced the products to our pets, carried them around in the carrier, crate, or backpack for 10-15 minutes, and noted how comfortable the item was for both ourselves and our pets. We also did a test run through all the features and cleaning. For dog car seats, we drove around with our dogs in the car seat for a week and then cleaned the car seat, again noting how comfortable we both seemed and the ease of cleaning. All tested products were put through real-world testing scenarios in order to accurately assess their overall performance and value for readers and their pets. We also included T+L editor recommendations that they personally use for their own pets for portable pet bowls and grooming wipes.

Check airline and FAA requirements ahead of travel

Nearly every airline has its own rules for flying with a pet. Check with your airline well ahead of your flight to confirm if your animal will be able to fly on the plane. Many airlines accept service animals but limit the qualifications to certain breeds and type of service. Additionally, short-nosed breeds of cats and dogs such as pugs and Persians are often not allowed to fly in cargo due to breathing concerns . Most flights only allow for a maximum number of in-cabin pets per flight or will only fly with pets in the cargo during certain months. It's wise to make a reservation for your pet well in advance to secure them a spot on board.

Consider microchipping your pet

If your pet isn't already microchipped, your upcoming trip may be just the right excuse to get it done. This is to help others identify your pet and locate the owner in case your pet escapes or runs away during travel. Collars also provide this information but can easily slip off in different circumstances. Microchipping your pet is added protection that you'll be reunited if they get lost and may be required for international trips.

Map out walk and bathroom breaks ahead of time

When planning your trips and travel time, be sure to pencil-in some time for your pet to use the bathroom — and find out where they can relieve themselves. In some (but not all) airports, there are dedicated pet relief areas with fake grass where dog owners can take their pets to use the bathroom. Options for cat owners are far fewer, which is why having a portable litter box on hand is so, well, handy.

According to Dr. Rendon, one of the most important things you can do when traveling with your pet is to check each state or country's travel requirements well in advance of your trip. "You should contact your veterinarian or check the APHIS Pet Travel website for specific requirements," she says. "You may need a health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and approved by an APHIS veterinary officer in order to travel internationally. Your airline may also have specific requirements. Don't wait until the day before you travel to obtain the necessary paperwork!"

You must book a reservation for your pet in advance — some airlines allow you to do it online or through their app, while others will require a phone call.

"If you need to travel with your pet and they are too big to fly in the cabin with you (typically larger than 20 pounds), then cargo is a totally acceptable way to bring them," Dr. Love says. "It is always better to have them in the cabin with you because you can be with them, but that isn't always an option."

Both vets agree that the biggest downside to flying your pet in the cargo is that you're unable to monitor them or give them any anti-nausea or calming medicine as needed. Keep in mind that the cargo area is not temperature controlled and you should avoid flying your pets in very hot or very cold months.

One of the easiest ways to keep your pets safe while traveling is to keep them calm. "Don't wait until the day of travel to introduce your animal to a carrier or crate," suggests Dr. Rendon. "Place a familiar blanket or one of your worn T-shirts in the carrier with your animal so it smells like home. Carriers should be lined with a towel and covered with a disposable wee-wee pad that can be changed if an animal soils the pad mid-trip." She also recommends limiting the size of the meal you feed your pet before traveling in case of nausea.

Dr. Love recommends exercising your pet before travel so they are more relaxed or having someone sit in the backseat with them.

The cost of flying with a pet depends on the airline, where you are flying to, and whether you're flying your pet cargo or traveling with them inside the cabin. For example, Delta charges $95 for domestic flights with a carry-on pet, $75 for flights from the U.S. to Brazil, and $200 for other international flights, and you must contact the airline directly to determine cargo fees. United Airlines charges $125 each way for a carry-on pet for domestic flights. American Airlines charges $125 for a carry-on pet within and between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (based on each country's entry policy).

Different airlines have restrictions on the age and breed of pets they allow to travel in the cabin. If your trip includes a voluntary stopover or connection of more than four hours, additional fees may apply for each connection segment. Check with your desired airline for specific pricing and restrictions.

Deciding how long your pet should ride in the car with you will be up to your individual pet. Some dogs may get antsy and need to go on their regularly scheduled walks, burn off energy, and use the bathroom. Monitor your pet during the car ride and check for signs of anxiety.

Top Travel Dog Bags Buying Guide

If you want to find the greatest dog travel bag, read this blog all the way through. There’s a comprehensive buyer’s guide as well as answers to all of your dog-traveling inquiries.

What Aspects Should You Think About While Purchasing a Dog Bag?

It’s always a good idea to get a little additional room in your bag, but not too much, especially if you’ll be traveling with it. Some people like a small-sized bag that can accommodate items for an overnight stay. But if you frequently travel for more than a week, you’ll need a much larger bag when choosing your bag. Keep in mind the number of dogs you’ll be hauling supplies for, their size, and the amount of time you’ll be outdoors.

It is critical to have enough storage. You want to be able to stuff everything you require into your luggage. While some bags have no sections and are entirely open, compartments simplify keeping organized. It’s preferable to purchase a bag with at least three distinct compartments. Think about how many chambers have a zipper, nylon, adhesive, or elastic closing.

While every adorable puppy has a favorite bone or toy, it may not suit traveling. Some bags have toys built-in to keep your dog amused if you don’t want to transport their favorite items on the trip. This might come in handy whether flying or using the train.

Food accessories

Food and water dishes are included in some dog food travel packs. Lightweight, foldable bowls make traveling simpler because they’re easy to store when you’re on the road.

What Are the Features of a Travel Dog Bag Critical to Consider?

Washing machine friendly.

Many individuals drop all of their clothes in the washing machine when they get home from a trip. And anything that comes into contact with dogs is almost certain to be filthy.

A dog travel bag that can be machine washed can make cleaning easier during and after a journey. If you fall in love with a bag that isn’t machine washable, be sure you can clean it quickly with a damp cloth.

Resistant to water

Some bags are waterproof, while others are water-resistant. Some people don’t care about this, but if there’s a chance the bag may get wet, a waterproof bag is usually the best alternative. It will keep everything in the bag safe if it is rained on or falls into a pool by mistake.

Bags aren’t equipped with unique transportation or magical abilities that allow them to float behind you. You’ll be carrying the bag’s whole weight as well as its contents. It’s also vital to be adaptable. In fact, simple adjustments to the length of the handles or straps can help you pack the bag with less stress on your body.

Consider where you’ll be holding the bag and how long you’ll be holding it for. A handle will suffice if you’re simply transporting it to and from the car.

However, suppose you’ll be carrying it for a long period or need to walk with it regularly. In that case, a backpack or cross-body bag may be preferable. If you are frequently traveling, be sure it includes a back sleeve that you can use to connect it to your rolling baggage.

How Much Does a Travel Dog Bag Cost?

The cost of a travel dog bag varies depending on bag style, materials used, and size.

Inexpensive

Travel bags for pets, including ones with wheels, range from $10 to $25. These are typically tiny in size and constructed of lightweight plastic.

You can find pet travel bags in the midrange market for $30 to $50. They’re usually medium in breadth and feature many compartments to carry much stuff.

Pet tripods and cases range in price from $75 to over $100. Bags in this price category are more likely to include wheels and numerous compacts with various pockets and secure closures.

What Criteria Did We Choose to Select the Best Travel Dog Bag?

We evaluated how effectively it fulfilled the varied demands of owners while narrowing down our selection of the finest travel dog bag. These requirements were then determined using the following three criteria:

The bags that we selected were not only well-made, but they also had a strong and long-lasting reputation. We looked at businesses that have cultivated a devoted audience over time while remaining true to their principles and never turning a blind eye to production concerns.

We always try to provide a range of pricing to appeal to a wide range of budgets, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t think about the prices of our best selections. Rather, the price of each thing was determined by its necessity and the features it offers.

We relied heavily on reviews to decide whether or not a product was worth recommending. Through these reviews, customers could determine what they enjoyed, what didn’t work for them, and what aspects might be improved.

Dog Travel Bag Buying Guide & FAQ

Things to consider when buying a dog travel bag.

The best dog travel bags are those which offer the main three components of any travel needs. Notably: does the bag help to keep you organized, for when you need it the most? Is it convenient, in terms of how much it can hold, how easy it is to bring along with you and how easy it is to clean (do you need to spot clean after every trip or is machine washable)? And is it comfortable for you, as the wearer, to bring with you all day? If it doesn't meet these needs, then you can be sure that it won't be any good for any type of travel.

As an added bonus, many options now come with dog bowls and food carrier bags, as part of their purchase. This makes it much easier for you to quickly and easily sort, organize and retrieve your necessities when you need them. For example, you don't want to get stuck looking for a first aid kit, when something goes wrong on your trip. Find out more about dog first aid kits here.

The Importance of a Dog Travel Bag

It's important to note that a travel bag is not the same as a dog carrier. While a pet carrier is key to bringing along your pet themselves, the travel bag ensures you have everything you need for you pup. In much the same way as parents of babies will need a diaper bag that is easy to use and give them anything they need for their baby, at a moment's notice, a good travel bag will offer this to you, for your dogs.

Flying with your pet requires its share of homework. Regulations on bringing your pooch or feline aboard an airplane include providing updated paperwork as well as picking a pet carrier that adheres to baggage requirements and size restrictions . (For other things to consider when flying with a pet and advice from animal experts, jump to the tips section .)

If you plan to bring your cat or dog with you on your next flight but aren't sure which pet carrier is best – or allowed – U.S. News is here to help. Start with this list of the top airline-approved pet carriers for your jet-setting four-legged friends.

  • Best Pet Carrier Backpack: PetAmi Backpack Pet Carrier

Best Luxury: Away The Pet Carrier

Best compressible: sleepypod air, best for dogs in cargo: sportpet rolling plastic kennel.

  • Best for Cats in Cargo: Petmate 2-Door Kennel

(Note: Prices were accurate at the time of publication; they may fluctuate due to demand or other factors.)

What sets this carrier apart: Designed with airline approval in mind, the medium size of this traveler-favorite carrier accommodates cats or small dogs with its spacious interior. Mesh panels zip open on three sides of the carrier as well as the top, ensuring a well-ventilated bag. The outer material is a lightweight and durable polyester. A removable, machine-washable woolen mat makes the interior comfy for your pet; there's also a safety leash you can use to secure your pet inside.

You can use the connectable loop handles and padded shoulder strap for easy carrying, and this carrier bag folds up when you're ready to store it away. The Henkelion Pet Carrier even comes in several fun colors, such as purple or green.

Travelers appreciate: "I have used the Henkelion soft-sided carrier many times," says Robbie Parker of travel blog Expat in Paradise , who travels with his small dogs. "These are great carriers as they are hardy for travel, collapse for storage, and fit perfectly under the seat for in cabin travel. Also, I like that they have one side that is mesh and the other side is solid with a pocket. You can face solid side toward the aisle so people walking around the plane don't upset your dog." He adds, "Overall, I would recommend it for in-cabin plane travel."

Frequent traveler and luxury travel advisor Ashley Les, founder of Postcards From , also appreciates that the design puts her cats at ease when flying. "I find that with more mesh, cats are exposed to more light and sight – it gets them more anxious," she says, adding: "There are multiple ways to get my cats in the carriers, from the sides or above, as well. I love that you can take out the bottom to wash it separately."

Price: $28.99 or less for medium

Sherpa's Original Deluxe Pet Carrier – Medium in black against white background.

Courtesy of Sherpa

What sets this carrier apart: Beyond a patented, crash-tested flexible wire frame that keeps your little buddy safe, Sherpa provides a Guaranteed on Board program that offers a refund for your flight and airline pet fee if you're denied boarding because of the small or medium sizes of this carrier. This mesh and polyester bag is an industry standard with good airflow. The front and top entries have locking zippers, and this collapsible carrier also features a removable (and machine-washable) faux-lambskin liner, a rear pocket for storage, and a seat belt safety strap that doubles as a luggage strap.

Travelers appreciate: This Sherpa carrier is renowned for its reliable functionality and amazing value. Recent travelers say the medium carrier fits well under the seat and keeps their pet comfortable in transit.

Price: $70 or less for medium

What sets this carrier apart: This Petsfit carrier's medium size adheres to most airline requirements (as does the small carrier). One of the mesh windows can be unzipped to form an extra compartment, expanding the carrier by 9.4 inches for an extended width of 20.4 inches. This product is a great option if you need a carrier for air travel but still want your pet to enjoy a bit more space to stretch out when not tucked under the airplane seat.

The sturdy solid wire construction ensures the bag won't collapse but is flexible enough to tuck into a small space, though you may need to remove the rods on either side if the carrier is too tall to fit easily underneath. There's a side pocket for storage, double zippers and a water-repellent inner cloth.

Travelers appreciate: "The Petsfit carrier was flexible enough to squeeze under most airplane seats, but still was sturdy enough to hold," says Alexandra Lauren of the travel blog The Bucket List Mermaid , who has used this carrier to fly with her cat. "My kitty could look around the airport with the built-in leash in the carrier. The expandable portion was an added bonus because it allowed for more room for my pet when on long layovers or when I had an empty seat on the airplane." Lauren also recommends Petsfit's expandable backpack-style carrier for a hands-free option.

Price:  $56.99 or less for medium

Natuvalle 6-in-1 Pet Carrier – Small in blue against white background.

Courtesy of Natuvalle

What sets this carrier apart: For travelers seeking versatility, this Natuvalle cat or dog carrier can be used like a backpack, shoulder bag, tote with carrying handles or even – if worn on your front – a baby carrier. This convertible choice can also be used as a car seat crate with built-in seat belt loops, and you have the option of using it either in the upright or side position. Other features include zipper locks, mesh panels, reinforced stitching, two walk-through doors and a photo ID tag. The carrier is foldable and has reflective stripes for night travel. While there are medium and large size options, the extra-small and small sizes are your best bet when it comes to fitting under an airplane seat.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the versatility of this bag; some travelers say the carrier fits best under the seat when on its side, as the upright position can be too tall.

Price:  $119.90 or less for small

Best Backpack: PetAmi Backpack Pet Carrier

The PetAmi Backpack Pet Carrier in black against white background.

Courtesy of PetAmi

What sets this carrier apart: Go hands-free with this PetAmi backpack-style carrier. A sturdy frame maintains its shape while you traipse through airport terminals, with chest and waist buckles for extra support. Four-sided access makes loading easy, and a rollaway mesh top means your furry friend can stick their head out the top when you're not in the air. The safety strap and buckle are designed to thwart even great escape artists, and a sherpa-lined bed entices fur babies to relax. The backpack carrier color options include red and purple.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the easy carrying this style provides, though they advise that you'll need to store this bag on its side in the plane cabin, and it won't fit on every airline.

Price: $39.99 or less

Away's The Pet Carrier in light blue against white background.

Courtesy of Away

What sets this carrier apart: It's a splurge, but this cat and dog carrier is made by Away, a popular luggage brand known for its sleek design and functionality. The same applies to this nylon and leather tote, which comes in black or a coast blue. The water-resistant lining is paired with sherpa bedding and exterior pockets that can hold a phone, keys or waste bags. If you already have an Away suitcase, this carrier will fit seamlessly over the handle with its trolley sleeve.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners who travel with this bag like that it's roomy, saying their pets seem comfortable inside. This carrier fits pets up to 18 pounds but is a bit on the larger side of an airline-approved carry-on, so be sure to research your airline's policies before taking it aboard.

Price: $225 or less

Dog inside a blue Sleepypod Air against white background.

What sets this carrier apart: The Sleepypod Air is designed to compress to fit under the seat during takeoff and landing; when the seat belt sign is off, your pet can enjoy slightly more room (but be aware that it doesn't hold its reduced size in a freestanding position, only when tucked into a small space). This unique carrier employs sturdy luggage-grade ballistic nylon for its base, with a panel of mesh running along the front, top and back. A removable privacy panel can be slid over part of the mesh. Available in multiple colors, this crash-tested model also has a seat belt strap, a trolley sleeve and a comfortable shoulder strap for carrying it.

Travelers appreciate: Users like the carrier's many features and say it's a good option especially for larger cats traveling by air, but some pet owners felt there was not enough airflow (especially with the privacy panel) for longer flights.

Price: $199.99 or less

What sets this carrier apart: Any furry friends larger than about 20 pounds will likely have to travel in the cargo hold if they're not a service animal. You'll want a very sturdy dog crate for the journey that meets every regulation, and SportPet's kennel passes the test for many travelers. This carrier meets International Air Transport Association guidelines with two snap-on water dishes and four stickers that indicate a live animal is inside; a "floor gutter" contains messes for easy cleanup. The durable plastic frame is connected with metal nuts and bolts and features airline-required tie holes for bungees.

This travel crate comes in six sizes, from small up to XXX-large, so be sure to determine the right size for your pet. A cushioned bed is not included and costs extra. For more information on pets traveling in cargo, consult the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the sturdy construction and the compliance with airline regulations, but the traveler-favorite feature is the removable wheels, which are included with the carrier (except with size small).

Price: Ranges by size from $76 to $385

Best for Cats in Cargo: Petmate Two-Door Kennel

Petmate's Two-Door Kennel in pink against white background.

Courtesy of Petmate

What sets this carrier apart: This option made of hard plastic and steel wire is tough enough to protect your cargo-contained cat, according to recent travelers. (Keep in mind that airlines do not recommend hard-sided carriers for in-cabin travel, and this kennel is too large to fit under airline seats.) The two front and top doors assist with entering and exiting, and color options like hot pink or blue will make this kennel easy to spot. The carrier comes in small (24-inch) and extra-small (19-inch) sizes, so choose accordingly based on the measurements of your cat. As with most hard-sided crates, you will have to purchase a plush bed separately.

Travelers appreciate: "I haven't traveled by air with this carrier, but I've owned it for years and really appreciate how sturdy it is," says Catriona Kendall, associate editor of travel at U.S. News. "The assembly of the carrier is straightforward, and my cats feel safe enough to hang out in it at home."

Price: $66.99 or less for 24-inch

How to choose the best pet carrier

There are a few major points to consider when choosing a carrier that will serve as your pet's safe space during a flight:

Size: Selecting the right carrier size for your pet is essential not only for your pets' comfort but also for their safety, according to Sara Hogan, hospital manager at Clarendon Animal Care in Virginia. "Please ensure the measurements for your carrier meet a standard that allows for your pet to comfortably turn around AND lay down," she says. But be aware that if the carrier is too large for your furry friend, they could end up injured in transit. The best way to determine the right size is to take measurements of your pet; to be as precise as possible, use the IATA's formula .

Keep in mind that only carriers able to fit under the seat in front of you are allowed in the plane cabin – a space that will vary by airline. Consult the next section on airline policies for more information.

Airflow: Don't underestimate the importance of adequate airflow. "Carriers and crates really need to have proper ventilation for short or long-term travel," Hogan says. "There IS a difference between taking your pet down the street to a friend's house or the vet and taking your pet on a trip with any sort of additional time involved."

Stability: Check the quality of all the zippers and materials − you want this to be an escape-proof carrier, and any malfunction can put your pet at risk. "If something has previously broken or fallen off the carrier or crate look to replace the piece or the entire crate/carrier," Hogan advises.

Soft-sided vs. hard-sided: If your pet is small enough to fly in the cabin, most airlines highly recommend a soft-sided carrier, which gives the most flexibility. Airlines are often slightly more lenient with the dimensions for soft-sided carriers in the cabin as long as they are able to fit underneath the seat without blocking the aisle of the airplane. Another bonus: Soft pet carriers often come with removable fleece bedding for extra comfort.

Note: Crates and carriers destined for the cargo hold of the plane must be hard-sided. Find more details on carrier specifications for the cargo hold in the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

Airline pet carrier dimensions

Each airline sets its own specifications and safety rules for pets in the plane cabin with you, so be sure to check with your intended airline for dimension limits, breed restrictions and other guidelines. Be aware, too, that most major airlines based in the U.S. do not offer an option to transport animals in cargo.

Use the links below to find more information on the specific pet policies for the following U.S.-based airlines. Each airline's size limit for soft-sided pet carriers in the cabin is also listed, with dimensions given in length by width by height.

  • Alaska Airlines : 17 x 11 x 9.5 inches
  • Allegiant Air : 19 x 16 x 9 inches
  • American Airlines : 18 x 11 x 11 inches
  • Delta Air Lines : 18 x 11 x 11 inches
  • Frontier Airlines : 18 x 14 x 8 inches
  • Hawaiian Airlines : 16 x 10 x 9.5 inches
  • JetBlue : 17 x 12.5 x 8.5 inches
  • Southwest Airlines : 18.5 x 13.5 x 9.5 inches
  • Spirit Airlines : 18 x 14 x 9 inches
  • Sun Country Airlines : 16 x 10 x 8 inches
  • United Airlines : 18 x 11 x 11 inches

How to prepare to fly with a pet

Help your pet acclimate.

When preparing to travel with your furry companion, planning ahead is key, especially if your pet isn't used to being confined in a crate or carrier. "I recommend buying the carrier as far in advance of travel as possible to allow your dog to become comfortable relaxing in the carrier in a familiar home environment before traveling," says Amanda Farah, CPDT-KA, national training and behavior coordinator for Best Friends Animal Society.

Some pets are sensitive to loud noises, so one way to prepare them for the journey is by playing recordings of sounds they might encounter in transit, Farah says. "I'd say a good general rule is that because so much of what they encounter during air travel will be new and potentially stressful, you should familiarize them to many factors as possible in the weeks or even months leading up to travel."

Book your travel far in advance

Keep in mind that airlines limit the number of pets allowed on a flight, so book early and try to secure a direct flight to cut down on travel time.

Familiarize yourself with your departure airport

Before you set off on your journey, familiarize yourself with the airport you're departing from – such as where to find a pet relief area – and how to go through security with a pet in tow. For example, you must never place your pet on the security conveyor belt (only the empty carrier goes through the X-ray tunnel).

Research your destination

This is a crucial step. Some countries will not allow pets in at all, while other destinations (such as Hawaii) may have strict rules about rabies vaccines or require all animals to travel in cargo. Christine Barton, a veterinarian with The Vets , recommends checking the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website to learn about requirements for health certificates, vaccines and more.

Other considerations will depend on what type of vacation you're planning; if it involves hiking or camping with your dog, Barton suggests checking the expected weather, making a small emergency kit for you and your pet, and considering a GPS tracker for remote areas. Wherever you're headed, locate the closest emergency animal hospital just in case and make sure to book pet-friendly accommodations .

Consult your vet

Once you've done your research, your veterinarian can help ensure your pet has everything you both need to travel, such as microchipping, required or recommended vaccines (and proof of them), testing, and health records, Barton says. A vet can also address any health concerns. "Doctors can discuss risks, precautions, and things to monitor while traveling," Barton explains, adding that you should make sure your pet is up to date on needed preventive medications, such as treatment for fleas or heartworm.

If your furry friend struggles with anxiety, your vet can prescribe them a medication to make the journey less stressful for both of you. "Talk to your veterinarian before administering any sort of medication to your pet, but definitely consider it for future travel," Hogan says.

Frequently Asked Questions

A carrier being "airline-approved" typically means it adheres to the airline's size requirements, is leakproof, provides adequate airflow and keeps your pet securely inside.

You can find a pet carrier on wheels, such as the  Snoozer 4-in-1 Roll Around Pet Carrier  or the  SportPet Rolling Plastic Kennel , but keep in mind that most wheeled pet carriers are too large to fit under the seat on most airlines, even with detachable wheels. Wheeled options can make your furry friend easier for you to transport, but they also tend to make for a bumpy ride for your pet, so consider carefully whether a carrier on wheels is right for your cat or dog, especially if they're easily frightened.

Most major airlines in the U.S. do not allow pets to travel in cargo; some, like American Airlines, only offer this service for active military or diplomatic personnel. Of the major U.S. airlines, only Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines currently accept animals in the cargo hold, so keep that in mind if you have a medium or large dog – or if your intended destination does not welcome in-cabin pets.

Most animals who fly in the cargo hold are fine, but there's still a risk of your pet being killed, injured or lost, according to the Humane Society of the United States. The most common dangers are excessively hot or cold temperatures, poorly ventilated crates, and rough handling. Be sure to follow all IATA guidelines for cargo crates to ensure your pet's safety. Before you book a flight, you may also want to research the airline's history with companion animals in the cargo hold.

The kennel you choose for cargo travel must allow your pet enough room to stand, sit upright, turn around while standing and lie in a natural position, according to the IATA. Carriers must made of rigid materials and include a solid roof, a leakproof base, a door with well-maintained hardware, working handles and ventilation on all four sides. Labels that say "Live Animal" and "This Way Up" are also required by the IATA.

A water dish must be securely affixed to the inside of the carrier, with open access for your pet to drink and for someone to refill it from the outside without opening the crate. A food container can either be inside the carrier if it's sealed or attached to the outside.

A pet carrier usually counts as either a personal item or a carry-on. Depending on the airline policy, you may be able to bring either a personal item or a carry-on bag (not both) in addition to your carrier. Check your airline's carry-on luggage allowance and pet policy to see what you can bring.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires puppies and kittens to be at least 8 weeks old to travel, but airlines may impose their own age restrictions on top of that. On Delta, for example, companion animals must be at least 10 weeks old for domestic flights. United Airlines says your pet should be at least 4 months old for international travel to comply with rabies vaccine requirements.

Your furry friend will incur certain fees for flying, but the cost will vary by airline. American Airlines, as an example, charges a $125 service fee for a carry-on pet, while Allegiant's fee is $50. Cargo fees may depend on trip details: Hawaiian Airlines charges $60 in fees for domestic flights and $225 for flights between Hawaii and North America, while the cargo fee on Alaska Airlines is $100. Service animals typically fly at no charge as long as they meet the airline's requirements.

It depends on your pet, according to Hogan. "If they're quite anxious you may want to offer food with a bit more advanced time prior to the flight to avoid vomiting in the carrier or on themselves, however, not too much time where they'll be hungry throughout the travel day," she advises. "Water is important to offer as often as possible in any setting. Access to using the bathroom more than once prior to travel is also advised so as not to miss an opportunity for output!"

Conveniently, some airports may have pet relief areas your dog can use either before or after you go through security, but that's something you'll have to research beforehand.

No. Unless your pet is a service animal of a certain size, airlines typically require pets in the cabin to be secured in their carrier and stowed under the seat in front of you.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Her cats haven't managed to damage or escape from the Henkelion and Petmate carriers she's owned for years (despite their best efforts). She also recommends this pop-up Pet Fit for Life carrier for road trips. Kendall compiled this list of airline-compliant carriers using her experience as a pet owner, advice from animal experts and extensive research.
