Hovland

Viktor Hovland believes he produced the round of his career so far to snatch a dramatic victory over world No 1 Scottie Scheffler and Ryder Cup team-mate Matt Fitzpatrick at the BMW Championship.

Hovland overturned a three-stroke deficit during a remarkable final day at Olympic Fields Country Club, where he birdied seven of his last nine holes to set a new course record with an amazing nine-under 61.

The fast finish saw the Norwegian star finish two strokes clear of Scheffler and Fitzpatrick, with his fifth PGA Tour title also seeing him jump to second in the FedExCup standings going into the season-ending Tour Championship.

Asked where that round ranked in his career, Hovland told Sky Sports : "It has to be number one. I remember playing a pretty special round of golf my first year on [the PGA] Tour, I shot seven under at Torrey Pines when it was hailing and windy and raining and that's probably the best I've ever struck it throughout a round.

"But to shoot 61 and shoot 28 on the back nine at this golf course and under the circumstances, I have nothing that beats that."

Hovland, who mixed 10 birdies with a lone bogey, added: "I was thinking if I post a score like I did yesterday (65) I could at least have a chance, but it's hard when you have so many guys in front of you that are really good. Catching heat on the back nine was what I had to do."

The 25-year-old was playing alongside Ryder Cup team-mate and reigning FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy, who ended the week five strokes back in fourth spot after a four-under 66 on Sunday.

"I felt like I played very average out there next to Viktor [Hovland]," McIlroy said. "He played amazing. I was marking his card in there and I'm like, 'oh, you only made one four on the back nine, the rest threes', so it adds up to a nice little 28 for him. It was great to see. He played great. I sort of realized around like 14, 15 something pretty special was happening.

"He [Hovland] has had some great wins already this year. Had a great chance at the PGA Championship. Didn't quite get it done, but yeah, he's a world-class player and looking forward to him being on my team for the Ryder Cup in a few weeks' time."

Scheffler held at least a share of the lead for most of the final day before fading over the closing holes, with the six-time PGA Tour winner stunned by how Hovland closed out the tournament.

"It's a pretty amazing round of golf to win this tournament like that," Scheffler said of Hovland's 61. "I still don't understand how the scores were so low this week. This place seems pretty hard to me, but guys are just ripping it up. 61 is a fantastic round, especially with Sunday pressure.

"I'm just a bit frustrated. I think that would be the way to describe it. I mean, Viktor went out and really just beat me today and played a fantastic round. I can hold my head high - I did my best out there today and fought hard. Just ultimately came up a couple of shots short."

Fitzpatrick started the week outside the top-30 in the FedExCup standings but secured his place at East Lake by claiming a share of second, with the former US Open champion having no complaints about narrowly missing out on victory.

"Can't do anything about 61," Fitzpatrick said. "I did just see Viktor [Hovland], I called him a little s***! But for me, just really pleased again that I played really well final round in contention with the world No 1 and I didn't lose it.

"Someone else came from behind and won it - can't do anything about that. I feel like my game is definitely in better shape than it was and looking forward to getting to next week and working on it some more."

What's next?

The PGA Tour season reaches its climax on Thursday at the Tour Championship, where only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings get to feature and players are given a strokes-based advantage based on their position.

Scheffler will start with a two-shot lead over Hovland and McIlroy will begin on seven under in third spot, while Jon Rahm begins in fourth ahead of Lucas Glover.

  • A birdie at the sixth extra hole saw Cantlay overcome his compatriot Bryson DeChambeau. The two had been locked in a thrilling duel for 24 holes in the final round.
  • More than 100,000 golf fans enjoy the 15th anniversary of the BMW Championship, which took place at the Caves Valley Golf Club (Owing Mills, Baltimore area) for the first time.
  • Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Cantlay qualify for Ryder Cup Team USA.

Baltimore/Munich. After an enthralling final round duel with Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay has secured the prestigious BMW Championship 2021 title and his first Playoff victory. Victory had to be decided in a playoff, after both tied on a total score of -27 – the lowest winning score to par in the history of the tournament. DeChambeau was unable to match Cantlay’s birdie at the sixth extra hole, having passed up several good opportunities to claim the win during the playoff.

“On behalf of everyone at BMW, I’d like to congratulate Patrick Cantlay on winning the 2021 BMW Championship, and say thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this event a success,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “We at BMW have long considered the U.S. to be our second home, and this event is an important part of what we do – beyond serving as a national platform for our brand and products, it also provides an opportunity to raise money for the Evans Scholars Foundation.”

Cantlay and DeChambeau, who played together in the final group on Sunday, quickly pulled away from the field to put on a duel that seemed more like matchplay. With Cantlay one stroke behind at the 17th, it seemed that the result had been decided when he landed his drive in the water. However, DeChambeau only recorded a bogey after a chip shot went wrong, allowing Cantlay to stay in the running with a bogey of his own. Cantlay then kept his sporting chances alive, sinking a 21 yards on the 18th green while his rival missed from much closer in.

This pattern was set to continue in the playoff: DeChambeau put on a brilliant display with the driver and his irons and on several occasions he was presented with an easier putt to claim victory – but he proved unable to sink them, while Cantlay got himself out of a tight spot more than once with challenging putts. The decisive moment came at the sixth extra hole for Cantlay, who had been by far the strongest player on the greens throughout the week.

South Korea’s Sungjai Im claimed third place, four strokes back (-23), ahead of Rory McIlroy (NIR, -22) and Erik von Rooyen (RSA, -21). Sixth place was shared by Dustin Johnson (USA) and Sergio García (ESP, both - 20), who are approaching top form just in time for the PGA TOUR Final and the Ryder Cup after middling seasons.

All proceeds from the BMW Championship benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation (ESF) and its mission of awarding full tuition and housing college scholarships to caddies who would otherwise not be able to afford to study. The BMW Championship has contributed more than 36 million dollars to the foundation since the tournament debuted in 2007. The final total for the 2021 tournament will be calculated in around a week’s time. Alongside the ticket sales, the revenue from the Pro-Am tournament also makes an important contribution. This year’s Pro-Am event featured 23-time Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps, rapper Macklemore (both USA) and star photographer Paul Ripke (GER) on the tee.

The BMW Championship represented the final opportunity for US golfers to score points for the Ryder Cup. The first six players in captain Steve Stricker’s squad have now been confirmed: Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson de Chambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay. Stricker will call up another six wild card entrants after the TOUR Championship. Qualification for the Ryder Cup Team Europe will end after the BMW PGA Championship (Wentworth Club, 9th to 12th September).

Bold and cold, Patrick Cantlay wins the BMW Championship

1416680695

WILMINGTON, Del. — The man who is forever expressionless licked his lips, breaking his stone-cold stare because stoicism wouldn’t suffice for what he just did.

Patrick Cantlay’s tee shot that was supposed to stay safe did not, leaving him with a mean, uphill approach from a bunker with the ball above his feet and edging in the way as he clung to a one-shot advantage on the final hole. He would need to slice his ball something fierce to reach the green and anything less than right would put the issue in doubt. But Cantlay took a mighty swipe and the approach looked good, and Cantlay let us know for sure it was by wagging his tongue like a windshield wiper, the ball safely coming to rest 40 feet or so from the pin. Whatever drama remained was erased when his birdie attempt finished inches from the hole, and when those inches erased Cantlay—his stoicism returning with alarming speed—responded with a reserved fist pump and slight grin, signaling this 2022 BMW Championship was officially his.

“I've had a bunch of close Sundays this year and not all of them have gone my way, as opposed to last year at the end of the year where I felt like all of the Sundays went my way,” Cantlay said after his final-round 69 and 14-under total were good enough to beat Scott Stallings by a shot. “I think it just drives you to practice a little harder. I've been playing great golf all year, so I knew that if I just kept knocking on the door and kept staying in a positive frame of mind and trusting myself that I'd knock off a few victories.”

RELATED: The clubs Patrick Cantlay used to win the BMW Championship

They call him Patty Ice, mostly for his perpetually cool persona. It is a moniker that has increasingly applied to his performance. Whereas most of his contemporaries play a go-for-broke style, Cantlay is more calculated, picking his spots and opting for precision over power. Just as importantly Cantlay makes sure there is no mess to clean up, and the result is one of the more well-rounded games in the sport. He can look a bit robotic, for the manner in which he plays—coupled with his deadpan poise in such an emotional sport—appear not human, or at least not of this era. If there was one critique it is that he is a little too level-headed, unable to recalibrate from his game plan. There are moments when it would behoove him to recognize that golf calls for emotion and perhaps a bit of wild cowboy to be the last one standing.

Of course, as Cantlay asserted, a lot needs to go right to finish first, and a lot of that is out of one’s control. On an overcast and occasionally uncomfortable day in Wilmington, Cantlay was able to stay cool while his competition welted. Xander Schauffele, playing in the final group with Cantlay, failed to break 70. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler played his first two holes in two over, and though he bounced back, the early deficit was too much to overcome. Stallings, a journeyman looking for his first win since 2014, played well and played tough, but missed a 10-foot birdie at the 18th when he and Cantlay were tied at 13 under.

“Man, we read it exactly—it did what exactly we thought it was going to do, it just did it behind the hole,” said Stallings, who despite falling just short, managed to finish high enough to sneak into the top 30 in the FedEx Cup eligibility rankings and qualify for the Tour Championship for the first time in 10 playoff appearances. “Man, I hit a great putt on 17 and a great putt on 18 exactly where we read it, just kind of a later break.”

RELATED: Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the BMW Championship

Cantlay himself stumbled around the turn, bogeying the eighth and 10th to fall two behind Stallings’ lead. But he answered with a birdies on the 11th and 14th, and there was no small matter of providence at the 17th. Cantlay’s drive was making a beeline for a bunker, only his ball hopped at the front edge of the bunker, cleared the sand, ricocheted off a hill and catapulted 40 yards down the fairway. Breaks, good and bad, happen to every golfer in every round, but the timing of this bounce was, well, fortuitous.

To his credit, Cantlay didn’t let that fortune go to waste, hitting his second five feet and cleaning up what remained to take a one-shot lead heading into the final hole. He proceeded to make his own luck with his bunker boldness at the 18th—and you better believe it took a bit of wild cowboy in him to pull that off—to seal the victory.

“I knew it was a tough shot, obviously, when I saw it. I thought if I could get it anywhere on the green, it would be a really, really good shot,” Cantlay said. “I actually had a good number for the 8-iron that I hit out of the bunker. The biggest challenge was trying to cut the golf ball enough with the ball above my feet in the bunker.

“But it came off almost exactly how I would have pictured it, how I visualized it.”

RELATED: The 30 players who qualified for the Tour Championship

Cantlay becomes the first player in the 16 seasons of the tour’s postseason to win the same event in consecutive years. Next week he’ll look to become the first FedEx Cup winner to repeat as champion. He’ll be in a good position to do so, starting the Tour Championship’s staggered scoring system in second place, two shots behind Scheffler, and at least one ahead of the remainder of the 30-man field.

Of greater note is that Cantlay is reaching the lofty aspirations placed upon him so many years ago. He now has eight career PGA Tour titles, six coming in the past two years. On Sunday he automatically qualified for the Presidents Cup, marking his third straight team appearance for the United States. There’s a major-sized hole in his resume at the sport’s four big tournaments, but at 30, there is plenty of runway to get plane off the ground.

Cantlay knows this. He wants those championships and the status and respect they confer. As he said multiple times Sunday night, he’s a competitor and when he doesn’t win it “grinds my gears.” Perhaps it’s taking him longer to get where he wants to go, but he believes his sense of direction is true.

“The thing I always remind myself of when I finish second or I'm close is Jack Nicklaus had more seconds in majors than he had wins,” Cantlay says. “That stat will shock you considering he has the most majors ever. No one would ever say he couldn't close or no one would say that he wilted under pressure, and yet he had more second places than anybody else.

“With that being said, I think putting yourself in position is maybe the thing that you can control in golf. You can't always control what other people around you do or where you get the right bounce or the wrong bounce. But putting yourself in contention time after time after time, the bounces are going to go your way and you'll get your fair share of wins.”

Few have put themselves in such positions over the past few years than Cantlay. On Sunday he got the right bounces. He’s never been short on swagger, and when he needed it the most he called upon bravado to back it up. When all those things are fused together it’s enough to lick your lips to think of where he might go.

Wilmington Country Club to host 2022 BMW Championship

GLENVIEW, IL –  The PGA TOUR, Western Golf Association and Wilmington Country Club officials announced today the 2022 BMW Championship will be played on the South Course at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. While official dates have not been announced, the event is scheduled to be held in late August of 2022. “We’re thrilled to be taking the BMW Championship to Wilmington Country Club, one of the finest clubs anywhere in the United States,” said Vince Pellegrino, WGA Senior Vice President of Tournaments. “The South Course has everything you look for in a traditional championship layout. It will present a strategic test for the world’s best players and a perfect venue for fans and PGA TOUR partners.” The 2022 event will mark the first time the PGA TOUR has played an event in Delaware, and it will be the third time since 2018 that the BMW Championship has been held on the East Coast. The 2021 BMW Championship will be held at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, from Aug. 23-29. Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, hosted the 2018 BMW Championship. “It is a great honor for Wilmington Country Club to be the first club in the state of Delaware to play host to the PGA TOUR, and to the prestigious BMW Championship,” Club President Gary Ferguson said. “The passion that fans in this area have for golf is unmatched, and they will enjoy the opportunity to watch the best players in the world compete on this spectacular and challenging golf course.” Wilmington Country Club was established in 1901, with its original 18 holes covering 135 acres. The club relocated in the 1950s, bringing in renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. to design the South Course, which opened in 1959. Playing over 7,500 yards from the championship tees, the South Course has been recognized as one of the United States’ best golf courses by Golf Digest. While this will be Wilmington Country Club’s first professional event, the club has long been a proving ground for the world’s best amateur players. After hosting the 1913 U.S. Women’s Amateur on what is now known as the “Old Course,” Wilmington has hosted five other USGA events, including the 1965 and 1978 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1971 U.S. Amateur, the 1978 U.S. Girls’ Junior and the 2003 U.S. Mid-Amateur. The club also hosted the 2013 Palmer Cup competition between Europe and a United States team that featured 2019 BMW Championship winner Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and Patrick Rodgers. The club and its membership have a deep commitment to the state of Delaware. “Delaware is excited to host the 2022 BMW Championship,” said Governor John Carney. “The First State has a long and proud golf history and is ideally positioned to support one of golf's great championships. Not only will the BMW Championship enhance the local economy, it will showcase a wonderful course and dynamic community to a global audience.” “We are thrilled the Wilmington Country Club in New Castle County has been selected as the site for the 2022 BMW Championship,” said New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer. “New Castle County has a historic relationship with professional golf, including being the home to the LPGA Tour’s McDonald’s Championship for nearly a decade. We’re excited to welcome back professional golf to one of the premier golf locations on the East Coast.” Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki added: “I join with all members of our community to welcome the BMW Championship to Wilmington Country Club. This event will attract many to our city who will be able to enjoy our terrific restaurants and fine hotels in addition to watching the greatest golfers in the world compete for one of the PGA TOUR’s most coveted titles.” In addition to having an estimated $30 million economic impact on the Wilmington area, the 2022 BMW Championship is expected to play a vital philanthropic role by introducing more golfers and fans on the East Coast to the Evans Scholars Foundation and its mission of awarding full tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving youth caddies. “We are proud of our collaboration with the Western Golf Association and of the support that we’ve been able to provide to the Evans Scholars Foundation,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “As the title sponsor of this tournament for the past 14 years, together we have helped to send over 3,000 young students to college to pursue their dreams.” All proceeds from the BMW Championship benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation. Since 2007, the event has raised more than $35 million for Evans Scholarships. Two caddies have earned Evans Scholarships from Wilmington Country Club – Owen Griffin graduated from the University of Illinois in 1983, and Dan Walsh currently is a junior at Penn State University. WGA President and CEO John Kaczkowski noted that “the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club will give us an opportunity to show a new market the power of the Evans Scholars Program. This is a critical step in our efforts to expand from coast to coast and reach more deserving young caddies.” The BMW Championship features the top 70 PGA TOUR players vying to earn one of 30 spots in the season-ending TOUR Championship and the chance to be crowned FedExCup champion. Past BMW Championship winners include Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson, Justin Rose and Tiger Woods. 2022 Ticket Information 2022 Hospitality Information 2022 Volunteer Information

2021 BMW Championship leaderboard breakdown: Bryson DeChambeau leads after stunning 60

Dechambeau has some world-class chasers at caves valley ready for a showdown this weekend.

bryson-dechambeau-2.jpg

Low scores have been bountiful this week at the 2021 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club. The scoring average once again dipped into the high 60s and there was a 59-threat in Round 2 on Friday. As a result of that run at 59, there is a new overnight leader at the second FedEx Cup Playoffs event after play was suspended following a lengthy weather delay late in the afternoon.

That new leader is Bryson DeChambeau, who dropped a 60 (by missing a putt from 6 feet on the final hole) just ahead of Patrick Cantlay, who shot 63 by playing the last two holes in 1 over. DeChambeau (-16) is one ahead of Cantlay (-15) and Jon Rahm (-15) with a handful of golfers (including Rahm) still left to finish up their second rounds.

Despite taking it deep, those two aren't out and galloping quite yet. Jon Rahm charged late. Sergio Garcia has cozied up to the top of the board, Rory McIlroy is lingering and Xander Schauffele (-9) and Hideki Matsuyama (-8) are well within striking distance of DeChambeau's lead.

Let's take a closer look at those rounds and what's in store for the weekend as we recap a thrilling second day at Caves Valley.

1. Bryson DeChambeau (-16): I went deep on DeChambeau's round here , but I do have a lingering thought. DeChambeau skipped print and internet media (people like me if I was at the event) and looked kind of sullen in his TV interviews. Despite the good golf and strong season, he just doesn't seem to be having a whole lot of fun right now. There are plenty of reasons this could be the case, but the bottom line is that it's unfortunate that all of the other stuff when it comes to DeChambeau shrouds both his spectacular ability and his willingness to expose himself to some risk to try and become the very best player in the world. Maybe the type of person who would expose himself to this type of risk is simply more preternaturally prone to this Other Stuff and it is more of a complement to rather than a byproduct of, but either way it is extremely unfortunate for everyone involved.

Rick Gehman is joined by Mark Immelman to break down and react to Friday's second-round action at the BMW Championship. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

T2. Patrick Cantlay, Jon Rahm (-15): Cantlay is truly having one of the strangest statistical weeks of the entire season. He's outside the top 50 from tee to green but just putting his brains out. After Friday's second round, he's now made 14 putts from 9 feet or longer and gained over 11 strokes on the greens. The only other golfer even better than 5.0 strokes gained with his putter is Hudson Swafford at 5.9. Now the question is whether this can possibly continue. I say no, at least not at this clip, although Cantlay certainly has the ability to flip a switch from tee to green that few others have.

Lastly, how rare is is that somebody would lose strokes to the field from tee to green and still win an event? According to Justin Ray , it's only happened four times in 670 measured events. You can't putt your way out of below-average ball-striking — at least not if you want a trophy — and yet, that seems to be exactly what Cantlay is doing.

Rahm very well could be your 36-hole leader as those who have not finished the second round will be in position early on Saturday, and Rahm has a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 16 to tie the lead with DeChambeau. Rahm remains the +150 favorite despite DeChambeau's 60.

T4. Sergio Garcia, Sungjae Im (-12): Garcia is a problem. He's a problem for this field because he's finally found a hot putter, and he's going to be a problem for the U.S. Ryder Cup team here in a month. He shot his second consecutive round in the mid-60s, though he didn't flush it quite as well in Round 2 as he did on Thursday. He's in a similar spot to Cantlay in that you wonder when (not if) the putter cools off whether he'll make up those strokes with some better ball-striking. Those two have been two of the best ball-strikers in the world over the last few months so it wouldn't be unreasonable, but it will make for an interesting Saturday as they try to put some consistency together across the board.

T6. Hudson Swafford, Sam Burns (-11): Burns is still out on the course, and he's fascinating to me this weekend. He might have the most to gain of anybody in this field. As my colleague, Rick Gehman, pointed out on Thursday, Burns could legitimately win this week and next, take home $15 million, the PGA Tour Player of the Year award and play for the U.S. side in the Ryder Cup. Based on his recent form and how good he's been this week, that is absolutely on the table.

T8. Abraham Ancer, Rory McIlroy (-10): McIlroy said he hit his driver as well on Friday as he did on Thursday, and he's right. The difference? His average proximity on the second nine was 63 feet (yesterday it was 23). He played that side in even par, which isn't terrible, but he lost strokes on his approach on six holes on that side and didn't take advantage of a strong driving this week thus far. The good news for him is that he can lean in that 64 in Round 1 and play his way into contention over the next 27 holes leading into the back nine on Sunday.

Sam Burns is making a move late in the day, and he's -3 thru 17 and into a tie for sixth with Swafford. Would love to see him get a win and see how the U.S. Ryder Cup team responds in terms of a possible captain's pick.

Rahm moves into T2 at -15 with three holes left to play. Good chance he catches Bryson at -16 and decent chance he passes him.

After the weather delay, we have a few late tee times charging up the board, including Jon Rahm (-11), Xander Schauffele (-9) and Dustin Johnson (-8). All three worth keeping an eye on late on Friday with Bryson in the house with the lead at -16.

They're playing again at Caves Valley after a delay that lasted nearly two hours.

There's a weather delay at the BMW Championship. Current reset of the leaderboard with a few hours left in Round 2.

1. Bryson: -16 2. Cantlay: -15 T3. Sergio: -12 T3. Sungjae: -12 T5. Swafford: -11 T5. Rahm: -11

Here's how close Bryson came to his 59.
