Arsenal 5-0 chelsea: gunners open up 4-point lead as blues crumble.

Arsenal were back to their very best on Tuesday, as Mikel Arteta’s side made light work of London rivals Chelsea in a 5-0 victory at Emirates Stadium.

[ MORE: Upcoming Premier League schedule | Live PL table ]

The victory sends the Gunners (77 points) four points clear of three-time defending Premier League champions Manchester City, who have now played two fewer games and still have six remaining. The five-goal margin of victory was perhaps significant, as Arsenal now lead the all-important tiebreaker by 12 goals. Man City win the title if they win out, but one draw while Arsenal win out would (likely) mean the ribbons are red and white at season’s end.

After suffering back-to-back defeats to Aston Villa and Bayern Munich last Sunday and Wednesday, Arsenal have since responded with two wins (and two clean sheets) in the span of four days to revive those title hopes just under a month from Championship Sunday.

Chelsea crumble in 2nd half as each Arsenal goal seemingly easier than the last

It takes a whole team effort for Chelsea to lose 5-0, and everyone in blue undeniably did their part in this one. There were signs of life as Chelsea created a few chances midway through the first half when Mauricio Pochettino’s side was still only 1-0 down (Leandro Trossard in the 4th minute), but once the second goal went in, it was quitting time for the lads.

Ben White made it 2-0 in the 52nd; it was 3-0 by the 57th and 4-0 in the 65th (both from Kai Havertz, against his former team); and White scored the Accidental Goal of the Season in the 70th. From 1-0, to 5-0, in 18 minutes. Each time Chelsea lost the ball, all it took was one or two passes to split the defense open and walk the ball into the penalty area (all five goals scored from 12 yards or in). Pochettino was forced to change three of four defenders from the FA Cup semifinal on Saturday, with Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah and Malo Gusto all ruled out by injuries.

On the flip side, Arsenal more than played their part in the result as well. Martin Odegaard delivered one of the passes of the season to set up goal no. 3, restoring a bit of the lost swagger and proving emphatically that the Gunners are still standing for one last go at the PL title. Anytime you out-shoot a squad that costs roughly $1.2 billion to assemble, by a margin of 26-7, it was a day you can be proud of.

What’s next?

Arsenal will continue their title chase in the north London derby on Sunday (9 am ET), when they visit nearby rivals and top-four hopefuls Tottenham. Chelsea will take on the other half of the top-four race, Aston Villa, at Villa Park on Saturday (3 pm ET).

TEAM NEWS - Cole Palmer out due to illness; Thomas Partey makes a rare start

Chelsea will be without their Player of the Season, Cole Palmer (20 goals, 9 assists in 27 PL appearances), after the 21-year-old came down with an illness in the last few days. Mykhailo Mudryk starts in his place.

On the Arsenal side of things, Thomas Partey is set to make just his second start since August, having featured almost exclusively as a late-game substitute since early March, after missing four months. Gabriel Jesus is back on the bench after starting in the win over Wolves this weekend, pushing Kai Havertz from midfield up to the forward line against his former club.

Arsenal focus, team news

Mikel Arteta has some big decisions to make as he tries to keep his squad fresh ahead of a big week in their title bid. London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham would love to scupper their title dreams and Arteta is going to have to rotate expertly. Saka, Odegaard and Rice looked exhausted at the end of Arsenal’s win at Wolves and surely all three need a rest at some point. But can Arteta afford to do that against Chelsea? Probably not. Elsewhere, Zinchenko or Tomiyasu could start at left back, while Jorginho may come back in to midfield and Gabriel Martinelli could also start. Arsenal have options but it’s all about how Arteta plans to use the different combinations of players together over these pivotal next few games.

OUT: Jurrien Timber (knee)

Chelsea focus, team news

Pochettino will have to pick his team up from their disappointment against Man City but Chelsea aren’t playing badly. The trio of Palmer, Gallagher and Madueke underneath Jackson has been working well and Moises Caicedo has hit top form once again. Defensive injuries have not been kind to Chelsea all season long and it is likely Axel Disasi will come in for Thiago Silva in defense.

OUT: Cole Palmer (illness), Thiago Silva (undisclosed), Malo Gusto (undisclosed), Trevoh Chalobah (undisclosed), Christopher Nkunku (thigh), Levi Colwill (foot), Reece James (thigh), Romeo Lavia (hamstring - out for season), Wesley Fofana ( torn ACL - out for season ), Lesley Ugochukwu (hamstring), Robert Sanchez (illness)

Chelsea have actually become Cole Palmer Football Club

LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 23: Mauricio Pochettino, Manager of Chelsea, gives the team instructions during the Premier League match between Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC at Emirates Stadium on April 23, 2024 in London, England. (Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty Images)

“If I am a team-mate of Cole Palmer in his position or a similar position, I am going to be motivated to go there tomorrow and show this is Chelsea Football Club, not Cole Palmer Football Club. For sure.”

It always seemed likelier to end up as meme material, fresh fodder for Quotes That Precede Unfortunate Events, than some Churchillian triumph of motivation for Mauricio Pochettino.

The surprise was the scale of the embarrassment in losing 5-0: Chelsea ’s worst to Arsenal and the club’s heaviest defeat in any London derby since Queens Park Rangers scored six goals without reply against their west London neighbours in March 1986. But what transpired at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday was only surprising, not shocking.

While they have tended to lift their level for more illustrious opponents this season, Chelsea are often like this on their bad days: callow, uncertain, disorganised, naive, wasteful. The key difference here is they met an opponent with every tool to punish them for it, every reason to be ruthless and every incentive to pile on the pain.

“When we have bad days, we are so bad,” Pochettino said. “When we are good, we are capable of everything.”

The latter claim feels a touch hyperbolic when this group of Chelsea players have fallen short every time they reach the brink of a truly substantive achievement this season. Pochettino’s instinctive desire to cast around for positives to harness is understandable and well-established at this stage, but it made for a muddled post-match inquest.

tour chelsea stadium

Chelsea’s head coach said his players gave up after Kai Havertz lashed in Arsenal’s third goal and added there were no words to describe the performance, but insisted they should not be blamed and declined an invitation to say he felt embarrassed or let down. He said his squad are “not able to keep the focus” from one game to the next but argued this is actually a good thing, since it can help them recover quickly from an historic humiliation.

There was also this, in response to a question revisiting the ‘Cole Palmer Football Club’ line and his importance to the team: “He is the only player we have, a playmaker who links all the lines in the team. When you miss a player like this, it is not easy to replace.”

Breaking down Cole Palmer’s astonishing season at Chelsea

  • An expert’s guide to his all-round brilliance
  • Do Manchester City regret letting him go?
  • England have a star made for the big moments

But the broader contradiction in Pochettino’s comments touched on a central theme in his public pronouncements for several months: any attempts to galvanise his players jar with his repeated assertions that Chelsea are the victims of what he calls “the circumstances we are living”.

Mainly he is referring to Chelsea’s relentless injury list, which grew to include Palmer, Malo Gusto and Ben Chilwell (again) before the trip to the Emirates Stadium. But there are marginally more subtle hints, detectable in his stressing “the need to be clever in the way that we assess the plan, the strategy for the future”, that indicate his doubts about the construction of this squad.

This leaves Pochettino walking a seemingly impossible line: trying to convince a young, flawed group of players that they are equipped to scale greater heights, while simultaneously signalling to Chelsea’s co-sporting directors and owners that they are bumping up against the hard ceiling on their capabilities.

Some will hear only excuses from a coach who knows he is failing to meet internal or external expectations, but this was not a good night for Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s lavish recruitment drive — a significant chunk of which made up the bulk of Pochettino’s starting XI.

Their transfer record-breaking midfield partnership of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo offered only fleeting control before being overrun. On the left, Marc Cucurella battled gamely but in vain to avoid being trapped in a triangle of sadness by Bukayo Saka , Benjamin White and Martin Odegaard . In front of him, Mykhailo Mudryk did nothing to dispel the notion that, 15 months into his Premier League career, he still has little grasp of where to go and what to do in a system.

In central defence, Monaco alumni Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile were paired for the eighth Premier League match. Chelsea have conceded 19 goals in those matches, an average of 2.4 per game that compares unfavourably with the club’s overall average of 1.8 per game. Neither number is close to being good enough and the defensive problems in Pochettino’s team go well beyond the centre-backs, but that particular £70million ($87m) partnership looks startlingly frail.

BENOIT-BADIASHILE

Noni Madueke ’s bright moments in attack were undercut by his lack of protection for Alfie Gilchrist , who was overloaded by Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard within four minutes of his first Premier League start at right-back. Up front, Nicolas Jackson generated chances for himself with smart movement and direct running, but finishes like a striker whose pre-season confidence has been shattered by the reality of the burden placed upon him.

Are any of these players benefitting from the collective experience of this season? Are they being put in the best position to succeed by their head coach? Are they developing as they might have done in a different environment, and in a positive direction that will one day justify the huge investment in them? Can any club endure nights like this having spent so much?

Palmer’s consistent brilliance has helped obscure many of these questions when Chelsea have won and offered a vital beacon of hope when they have not. In his absence, no one at any level of this chronically underachieving project can escape scrutiny.

tour chelsea stadium

Arsenal seek their second win in four days when they host Chelsea on Tuesday in an English Premier League showdown. Arsenal (23-5-5), who are even with Liverpool atop the Premier League table, improved to 11-1-1 over their last 13 EPL matches with a 2-0 road triumph over Wolves on Saturday. Chelsea (13-8-10) enter with an eight-game unbeaten streak (4-4-0) after cruising past Everton 6-0 on Apr. 15. The Gunners fell behind by two goals before battling back for a 2-2 draw at Chelsea when the clubs met for the first time this season in October.

Kickoff at Emirates Stadium is set for 3 p.m. ET. The Gunners are -260 favorites (risk $260 to win $100) in the latest Arsenal vs. Chelsea odds, while the Blues are +600 underdogs. A 90-minute draw is priced at +420 and the over/under for total goals scored is 3.5. Before locking in any Chelsea vs. Arsenal picks, you need to see what proven SportsLine's soccer expert Martin Green has to say .

Why you should back Arsenal

The Gunners will be eager for the opportunity to atone for their last performance at home, a 2-0 setback against Aston Villa on Apr. 14. It marked the only time the club allowed more than one goal over its last 13 matches, a stretch during which it has outscored its opponents 40-6. Arsenal have posted eight clean sheets over that span and netted at least four goals on five occasions.

Winger Bukayo Saka has converted in just one of his last five league contests but is tied for ninth in the EPL with 14 goals. Midfielder Kai Havertz is only goal away from reaching double digits for the first time since 2019-20 with Bayer Leverkusen of the Bundesliga, while Leandro Trossard has recorded eight goals in his first full season with the Gunners. The 29-year-old Belgian forward, who netted a total of eight goals while splitting last campaign between Brighton and Arsenal after converting eight times for the Seagulls in 2021-22, scored in the 84th minute at Chelsea on Oct. 21 to earn the Gunners a point.  See which team to pick here .

Why you should back Chelsea

Midfielder Cole Palmer has been red-hot for the Blues of late, converting 10 times over his last five contests to pull even with Manchester City's Erling Haaland for the Premier League lead with 20 goals. The 21-year-old Palmer registered a brace in a 2-2 draw with Burnley on March 30, recorded a hat trick five days later in a 4-3 triumph over Manchester United , and had a four-goal performance in Chelsea's dominant victory against Everton on Apr. 15. Palmer, who also converted versus Arsenal in October, has been the Blues' top set-up man as well, as he is tied for fourth in the EPL with nine assists.

Striker Nicolas Jackson and defender Alfie Gilchrist also converted versus Everton, with the former reaching double figures in goals in his first season with the Blues. The 22-year-old Jackson spent the previous campaign with Villarreal , where he netted 12 goals in 26 matches. Chelsea are unbeaten in their last four league contests on the road, where they have recorded a win and three draws since being defeated 4-1 at Liverpool on Jan. 31.  See which team to pick here .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

They did get the best of arch rivals Dinamo Ak-Bars in both the Russian Cup and the Prometheus International tournament to show they are knocking on the door.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.
