A visit to the University of South Carolina isn't complete without a glimpse of the historic Horseshoe. The U-shaped original campus — once called South Carolina College — has seen more than two centuries of history unfold, earning it a position on the National Register of Historic Places. It's also the place where the university took the necessary step of acknowledging that the picturesque grounds and the daily life inside its walls relied upon enslaved workers.

Wofford College, Spartanburg

The Main Building , designed in the Italianate style by Edward C. Jones, stands as the heart of the campus center. Accordingly, every student that attends Wofford College has a class in the Main Building, and inside the historic building sits the College Bell, purchased in 1854 from the Meneely Bell Company . In addition to indicating the time on campus, this bell rings three times for each student: when they initially enter as first-year students, the second time at their graduation, and the last time on All Saints Day.

Another notable facility is the Burwell Building . First established in 1969, this building constitutes Wofford College's main dining hall. The glass facade of the building allows for an inviting layout, adding to the structure's beauty. Moreover, this establishment staged the first Wofford College Theater Productions in the Montgomery Room .

Established when the university came to fruition, Wilson Hall previously housed the entire student body population.

To the right of Wilson Hall, facing the building, is Twitchell Auditorium at the Zimmerli Performance Center. The 1,489-seat auditorium puts on concerts, grand announcements, and even opera performances.

The quad is situated behind Wilson Hall and provides an open, green landscape for students to enjoy the outdoors. Many student activities are hosted in this area, including movie nights. Additionally, near the college is Morgan Square , a quaint city center filled with the history of Spartanburg.

USCB's Beaufort campus offers a Center for the Arts , where the institution hosts exhibitions, art showcases, musical ensembles, theater performances, and movies for its students and faculty. Sea Islands Center Gallery is another USCB program that illustrates works of visual art by students, faculty, and recognized artists from around the country.

The university (which offers a virtual tour) is home to many impressive buildings. Among them is the wellness and fitness center, which has an entire floor dedicated to weightlifting and strength training. There are countless cardio machines as well as an indoor track upstairs.

The school also offers indoor and outdoor pools, a multi-story climbing wall, and athletic trainers for students to customize their workout plans. Moreover, the University of South Carolina hosts group workout sessions. And because of the sunny environment at UofSC, one can often find students playing sand volleyball and corn hole outside the wellness and fitness center.

Meanwhile, Main Street in Columbia City is a bustling hub for student life. The area offers a farmers' market, also known as the Soda City Market, every Saturday morning. Regardless of the weather, over 150 small businesses and vendors populate the street with live music, good eats, organic ingredients, and handmade items to sell.

In addition to the weekly market, Columbia has countless festivals, events, and opportunities. For example, Main Street hosts the Palmetto Peanut Festival, the South Carolina State Fair, and the Famously Hot SC Pride Festival. It is also home to many businesses for graduated students and attractions, such as the Nickelodeon Theater.

In addition to the main campus, an east campus is accessible through the university's shuttle system. These shuttles also take students and visitors to the nearby Walmart, the airport, and the train station.

Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina

PGA Tour pro with South Carolina ties wins Myrtle Beach Classic qualifier

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A University of South Carolina Aiken alum recently earned an opportunity to play in the upcoming Myrtle Beach Classic PGA golf event.

Matt Adkins earned a sponsor’s exemption by winning the YouTube-style tournament called “The Q,” which was played on March 4. The event was closed to the public, and the results were kept secret until Tuesday when organizers released a two-hour video.

The 16-player tournament featured eight YouTube content creators and eight PGA Tour players, and on Tuesday, locals and visitors gathered for a watch party at the Tournament Players Club to watch the video and find out the results

Many of these competitors had ties to South Carolina, including Atkins. He has played in 25 PGA Tour events and finished 38th in November’s RSM Classic played at the Sea Island Golf Club in Saint Simon Island, Georgia.

“My first experience with golf, really, was playing with my dad on vacation in Myrtle Beach,” Atkins said. “That’s my like first real memory of playing. So I played one year of college golf in Arkansas, and then I transferred to USC Aiken for my last three years.”

Atkins and YouTuber, George Bryan, were tied at three under par on the 18th hole, putting them into a playoff.

“I had a short putt to win, and once that went in, it was just relief,” Atkins said. “It was really bittersweet because George is a great friend and that was the first time I got to battle against a friend in competition, one that heavily to where it was like win or lose to a friend.”

Since winning “The Q,” Atkins said he has played in other tournaments to help him prepare and hopes to qualify for the CJ CUP Byron Nelson, which will be played May 2-5 in Dallas, Texas.

“Hopefully play some good golf,” Atkins said. “I could very well quality in the Byron next week and go straight from Dallas to Myrtle Beach, playing back-to-back events, which would be cool, so we’ll give it a go.”

Atkins said he’s excited to compete in the Myrtle Beach Classic, which is set for May 9-12 at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club. Over the past 30 years, 12 players have won on the PGA Tour while playing on a sponsor exemption.

Weekday Campus Tours

Learn all about Gamecock life during a two-hour campus tour. Each tour begins with a 20-minute presentation covering the admissions process, financial aid and scholarships. Then, guests spend 90 minutes exploring campus guided by a University Ambassador. When classes are in session, campus tours are available weekdays at 9 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. with an additional 10 a.m. tour available on Mondays and Fridays. Tours during extended USC-Columbia breaks (winter, spring and summer) are subject to University Ambassador availability.

2024 NCAA Women's D-I Golf Regional fields selected: Who's in, who's out?

Wake Forest is looking to become the first repeat NCAA women's team champion since Duke in 2006 and 2007.

South Carolina, Stanford, Wake Forest, LSU, USC and UCLA each earned No. 1 seeds as the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee announced its selection of 72 teams and 36 individuals to participate in the 2024 NCAA Women’s D-I Regionals, May 6-8.

Thirteen SEC schools earned spots into the regional fields (including four No. 1 seeds), the most of any conference, followed by nine from the Pac-12, eight from the ACC and seven for the Big Ten.

For the third time, there will be six women’s regional tournaments, each scheduled for 54 holes, an increase from four in previous seasons. And for the second year five teams will advance from each regional to the NCAA Women’s Championship rather than four, aligning it with the number of men’s teams that qualify.

But for the first time, the national championship will be held at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.. The North course, newly renovated by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner , will begin a three-year stint in hosting the women’s and men’s championships, with some hoping that the new venue might eventually become a permanent host for the NCAA finals.

Back to regionals: each site will have 12 teams and six individuals competing. In addition to the five teams qualifying for nationals, the low individual golfer not on one of those teams will also be moving on to La Costa.

For the ninth time, the national championship will include a stroke-play segment to determine the individual champion (72 holes) and whittle the field down to eight schools who then compete in a head-to-head match-play bracket to determine a team champion. Twenty-nine different programs have advanced to match play since the format was adopted in 2015, with Stanford being the lone school that has reached match play all eight times while USC has reached six and Duke have reached five.

Wake Forests is the defending NCAA women's champion, after knocking off USC in the finals last May at Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale . Stanford’s Rose Zhang became the first player to ever defend her individual title when she won to cap her sophomore season a year ago. She has since turned pro so we’re assured to have a new champions in 2024.

This year's NCAA Women's Championship will be May 17-22.

‘Cicada-geddon’ causes some to report the noisy insects to law enforcement

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) - Cicadas are beginning to appear in South Carolina, and they’re apparently so loud people are reporting the noise to law enforcement.

Cicadas make a loud buzzing noise, which is their mating call. Their collective song has been so loud that it prompted people to call the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week and inquire about what it was, WIS reports .

“We have had several calls about a noise in the air that sounds like a siren, or a whine, or a roar. The sound is cicadas,” read a post on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page. “Although to some, the noise is annoying, they pose no danger to humans or pets. Unfortunately it is the sounds of nature.”

Sheriff Lee Foster says a handful of calls about the cicadas came in Tuesday, and some deputies were stopped and asked about the noise by some residents.

“Biblical,” said Foster when asked to describe the sound. “Like the locust coming.”

Cicadas are louder than a police siren and a tad quieter than a jet engine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“I kind of remember back several years ago when we had them like this, but I don’t think it was still this loud as it’s been,” Foster said. “I mean, it’s just part of what we’re going through. We had a leap year, an eclipse, all these different moon phases. Now, we’ve got cicadas everywhere.”

While the insects can be found annually in South Carolina, these periodical cicadas are more rare, crawling up from underground every 13 to 17 years to sing their song.

This particular brood of cicadas is not harmful to humans and pets, and they cannot bite, according to Eric LoPresti, a University of South Carolina associate professor and entomologist. He explained it’s a harmless ecological event.

“I think people should go out there and enjoy it,” he said. “It’s really a bonanza for things like birds and rodents. There’s all this free protein.”

Those visiting Newberry County’s Lynch’s Woods Park had varying reactions to the cicadas and their noise Wednesday.

“Definitely obnoxious, but it’s pretty cool,” said Kelli Helms, who experienced the cicada swarm while on an afternoon walk. “It doesn’t happen all the time, so it’s pretty cool.”

Bryn Eagleson, who moved to Newberry a few years ago from Michigan, described the insects’ song as meditative.

“Just that sound in the background kind of puts you into a meditative state on your walk,” she said. “It’s really quite wonderful.”

The swarm of cicadas will not be here for long, though. Entomologists say it will only last two to three weeks.

“It’s going to be a pretty short-lived phenomenon, so you can put your ear plugs away soon,” LoPresti said.

The buzzing in the backyards of South Carolinians is happening in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime ecological event.

Scientists say in certain parts of the country, there will be a rare double brood emergence of cicadas, the likes of which has not been seen since the 1800s.

The next time there will be a cicada swarm like this in South Carolina will be 2037.
