Home / Travel / Kalna – glorious ‘Temple Town’ over a lazy weekend

tourist spot near kalna

Photography, prayers and peace – add all these and one gets the name Ambika Kalna, in short Kalna, a picturesque temple town of Burdwan. Not just home to religious fervour, Kalna is also an abode to astonishing works of terracotta. With an impeccable, semi-urban charm, this town attracts thousands of visitors daily from all across the globe. If you have a lazy weekend at your disposal, then do not miss this exclusive tourist spot just a stone’s throw from Kolkata, yet so little-known!

We hired a car to take us down NH 19 and then Boichi-Kalna road. It takes about 2 hours to reach the town. There are also multiple trains from Howrah that take not more than 3 hours to reach Kalna. Amidst fragrance of wild flowers strewn on red clayey paths, this town is steeped in heritage. The oldest among a series of temples that lends the name Temple Town to Kalna, happens to be the Lalji Temple. As per historical records, this temple was built by Queen Braja Kishori Devi and was opened for prayers in 1739. Red coloured bricks make up this exquisite temple, that is also adorned with marvellous terracotta figurines. If you thought only Bishnupur claims of terracotta works, you are wrong. A visit to Kalna was indeed an eye-opener about the rich sculptures of Bengal. The temple also has a unique characteristic feature, that of a roof with 25 distinct peaks.

But arguably the most attractive spot of Kalna is the famous Nava Kailash Temple complex. Nava literally means ‘new’, and Kailash is mythologically considered as Lord Shiva’s home. There are 108 temples (109 as per the inscription at the entrance), in two concentric circles. The inner circle has 34 temples, all white Shiva Lingams. The outer circle consists of the rest, black and white Lingams placed alternatively. The temple arena was constructed by King of Burdwan, Raja Tejchandra, in 1809.

If you wish to explore more, there is no dearth of variety in terms of architectural splendour. The Kalna Rajbari boasts of some magnificent structures, the chief being Pratapeshwar Temple. The terracotta works on its four walls are the very best in terms of detailing. It was meticulously built by Ramhari Mistri in 1849, a master craftsman of that period. It is ornamented with gripping terracotta plaques visually summing up few of the episodes from the epic, Ramayana.

So, if you are a history buff and wish to explore some artistic artefacts laced with religious fervour, then do not miss Kalna. It will definitely leave an ever-lasting mark on your travel list.

Ambika Kalna [Sabuj Deep] 108 Siva Temple Tourism and Guide

You may be searching for a Sabijdwip, Ambika Kalna or Purbasthali tour and get my guide. You might think it’s not what you are searching for. Let me assure you it’s relevant to what you need. I combined all those West Bengal places for you to get an easy idea about those places. Let’s start with Sabuj Deep .

Sabujdwip and Ambika Kalna tour details

Sabujdwip Island has been developed 75 km away from Kolkata. It’s under the Hooghly district. This island is at the confluence of Hooghly and Behula rivers, and it’s 2 km long, shaded with various trees like tamarind, Akasmoni, palm, eucalyptus, Arjun, etc.

Greenery is all around, and hence the name is the gaps of leaves of the trees. In winter, Sabuj deep picnic spot is ideal. The roads are rows of coconut trees. There is also a children’s park and watchtower. From Sabujdwip, Ambika Kalna is just a little distance away .

Our holiday story – How We Reached Kalna

We visited Ambika Kalna by train from Howrah. Kalna, the historical place, is in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal. It’s a two-hour journey from Howrah; the available train is Katwa local. The railway station’s name is Ambika Kalna.

From the station, we hired a rickshaw, visited all the places within 3 hours, and returned the same way. The rickshaw (nowadays Toto’s are available) charges 200 rs per hour. Please carry food or finished lunch outside of the Kalna station. The best time to go is in the winter season.  Bishnupur Mukutmanipur Tour  terracotta art is also famous in Bengal.

Kalna is just 82 km from Kolkata. It can reach both Howrah and Sealdah also. Kalna and Santipur are located on either side of the Ganga. In 1975, the temple was built by King Burdwan Chitra Sen. In his kingdom, the Siddheswari Debi temple was made, which is the main attraction. Ambika Kalna is a Vaishnav and Shakta pilgrim center.

Siddheshwari Devi temple is dedicated to Devi Ambika, and it is after her that Kalna is also known as Ambika Kalna.

Debi Bhabani temple

The Debi Bhavani temple was established by Bhabendramohan Chowdhury, popularly known as Bhaba Pagla. The temple has beautiful needlework by Bhaba Pagla.

According to rumours, Sri Chaitanya/ Nimai comes alive through the idol. Cut from the need tree under which Nimai was born.

It was built in 1809, also known as Nava Kailash. The temples are constructed in two circles. One consists of 74 temples, while the other has 34. The temple was made of white marble, and the “Shiva linga ” was made of black stone. We can see all the deities from the centre of the temple. Terracotta work was found there.

The temple is also rich in terracotta work. The wall describes the women’s daily activities, and it is tales from the Puranas. Others are Krishna Chandra Mandir, Buddhist temple, etc.

Go to Famous places in Kolkata city

On the way to Kalna, Dumurdaha can be reached. I have a special interest in this place. Swami Uttamanadaji Maharaj’s ashram is there. It’s called Uttam Ashram. The ashram is very near Dumurdaha station.

He has many ashrams all over India, and it’s the main ashram. Monks stay there. The place is very peaceful. There is also a storage facility for outsiders. Only veg food is allowed in this place. Lots of flower gardens and trees surrounded that place.

The prayer and the arati are very memorable for me. There is a special place for ladies also. There is a lovely river just a few feet left. Their calibration was the most popular at the time of Sivaratri and Magh Purnima. That time, another ‘shishya’ is coming from another location to celebrate the occasion.

Purbasthali / Chupi one-day trip from Kolkata

The Purbasthali is a haven for  migratory birds . The lake belongs to Burdwan and Nadia. Anglers are interested in boat rent and fishing; they must keep the lake clean. Every year, lots of birds come from different locations.

The birds returned when the temperatures were rising in the lake. There is a picnic spot also. Everything is very disciplined. No loudspeakers are allowed throughout picnics, and huge vehicles are created to park at a distance. It’s a perfect one-day return trip from Kolkata in winter.

Please feel free for any information related to my blog. I am always happy to reply. Mail id – ruma[@]theholidaystory.com

Since we’re planning a day-trip and back by car, do you suggest tripping by a car is good (to the places to visit at Ambika Kalna?), or suggested to take riksha?

Also, in Google Map I found there were two places – Ambika Kalna (rail station) and Kalna – if we hop by car which place we should target to reach? You see I have not enough knowledge about the place at all, so looking for your good suggestion! TY!

Hi santanu,

All the spot is very near from “Ambika kalna” railway station. Auto or riksha is convenient.car parking might be a problem for all the places because of some narrow road. It will take Maximum 2 to 3hour for visiting all the places. If you have a car then you can go kalna and dumurdaha asram also. If you go with family You can find mental peace over there. Best of luck for your journey. Full day you can utilise. Please ping back after came back. Eager to here your experience. Thanks

Ruma (Writing from mobile, please dont mind for typo error)

Thank you very much for your suggestion. We shall go in the family actually, me n my wife and our infant. It was indeed a subject to think whether it’s good to roam by car to those places. After your suggestion, now we are at least sure that it’s better to grab a rickshaw instead. Perhaps we park our car somewhere (although I don’t know where) and take a rickshaw.

Sure thing, I shall let you know once come back ) and no problem with the typo.

I would like to visit Uttama ashram. Is there a way to stay there for a few days. Do I need to book a room in advance?

Home / day outing / ambika kalna, day outing - ambika kalna, ambika kalna day outing.

For a History buff in Kolkata who is looking for a relaxing one day outing amongst a plethora of historical relics, then our day tour to Ambika Kalna is highly recommended. This ancient town dating to almost 1000 years based on 10 th and 11 th century archeological relics found from the adjacent Bhagirathi river can be an interesting hunting ground for ardent history lovers. Mangal Kavyas from Bengal and map made by Mattheus van den Broucke of the Dutch East India Company suggest that the town was earlier known as ‘Ambowa’ or ‘Ambowa Muluk’ between 15th to 16th centuries.

Those interested in Bengal temple of architecture would love a daylong outing to Ambika Kalna as the place boasts of almost all variety of Bengal temples of art. Strictly speaking even Bishnupur does not have such a wide array of temples like Ambika Kalna. From simple Aatchala styled to 25 pinnacled temples, Ambika Kalna is true the land of variety of temples. The temples of Ambika Kalna are not as old as the city. There are several mosques in the city which predates the temple, simply because Ambika Kalna became a significant Military base after Jafar Khan conquered Saptagram in 1298. In a tour to Ambika Kalna a visitor can discover old mosques in the city dating between the years 1490 to 1559. Ambika is also famous because Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited the town during 16 th century. The first ever Temple dedicated to Chaitanya exists in Ambika Kalna.

9 Heritage Rajbaris to Visit near Kolkata, West Bengal

Swarnab Dutta

  • January 28, 2024

Kolkata was a cultural melting pot during British rule. The opulent aristocracy of Bengal and the city’s nouveau riche lived in lavish houses inspired by Europe’s Greco-Roman architectural histories.

During the British Raj, these rajbaris, or royal residences, belonged to West Bengal’s landed nobility, known as zamindars. Centuries later, the royal families have resurrected these beautiful historical masterpieces to their former glory.

Some of these Rajbaris are now used as heritage resorts, where you can book a stay. Others, however, are in ruins. Still, you can visit these historic landmarks and explore their past glory.

In this article, you will get to know about the following Rajbaris that you can visit near Kolkata,

  • Serampore Rajbari
  • Mahishadal Rajbari
  • Itachuna Rajbari
  • Bawali Rajbari
  • Amadpur Rajbari
  • Kalna Rajbari
  • Cossimbazar Rajbari
  • Jhargram Rajbari
  • Kashipur Rajbari

Let’s see each of these places in detail.

1. Serampore Rajbari

Serampore Rajbari

Serampore Rajbari is an opulent mansion that belonged to the Goswamis of Serampore. It was constructed between 1815 and 1820 by Raghuram Goswami, son of Harinarayan Goswami. Later, the locals began to refer to it as Goswami Rajbari.

The palace is standing with its intriguing architecture. The grand building has two independent blocks from the outside. A complicated labyrinth of corridors linked these blocks.

The part to the north is more impressive, with ionic columns, and cast-iron gates. The most prominent feature on the inside is the “Chandni,” or “Natmandir,” a 120-foot-by-30-foot covered courtyard.

The Chandni serves as the location for Durga Puja, during which the Serampore Rajbari greets a large number of people.

2. Mahishadal Rajbari

Mahishadal Rajbari front view

Mahisadal Rajbari is a popular Rajbari that is less than a three-hour drive from Kolkata. The royal palace is also known as Phool Bagh. The Garg family became rulers of Mahishadal after the lineage of the previous rulers, the Upadhyay family, ended due to the lack of a male descendant.

The tranquil palace became one of the primary attractions for locals and tourists visiting the adjacent tourist sites. It was opened as a museum in the year 2012.

Many religious festivals like Durga Puja and Jagannath Rath Yatra are organized here.

The dining hall is beautifully adorned with a lovely fresco panel depicting the stories of Shakuntala.

Lal Kothi, Madan Gopal Temple, and DadhiBaman temple are some of the important attractions in Mahishadal Rajbari.

3. Itachuna Rajbari

The Itachuna Rajbari, also known as the Bargi Danga, is a well-preserved Rajbari that has been modified into a historic destination and a palatial homestay now.

The name Bargi is derived from the Marathi word Bargis. The Kundans were one of the Bargis who settled in Bengal and were known as the Kundus.

The Itachuna Rajbari was built by the Kundu family. It is located about two and a half hours from Kolkata.

The Rajbari hosts many events and programs, including Sandhya arati, and traditional rural music programs. The red and yellow colors of the building, as well as the adorable mud cottages, add to the elegance of the palace.

This magnificent 200-year-old mansion with five courtyards, ancient caskets, elaborate woodwork décor, and framed texts from the past makes it an ideal location for an elegant wedding or pre-wedding shoot.

You can enjoy the delicacies prepared by the cook whose family has served the royal family for decades.

4. Bawali Rajbari

Bawali Rajbari, Nodakhali

The Bawali Rajbari is one of the spectacular architectural masterpieces located in Nodakhali, South 24 Parganas. It was built about 250 years ago. The roots of the Mondal Dynasty of Bawali palace date back four hundred years.

This architectural Marvel has a glorious history, as Eminent guests, grand parties, festivities, and lavish lifestyles were an integral part of Baawali Rajbari for over 170 years. But after the independence, the zamindars lost their wealth which led to the ravishing of the Rajbari gradually. Today the Rajbari has been transformed into a luxury heritage resort near Kolkata .

Once you step into the Rajbari you can experience a vintage ambiance of zamindari grace, styles, and opulence. A treasured palace wrapped with royalty will surely amaze you.

Premium comforts, royal services, appealing beverages and food, and the enticing piano room are the prime highlights here.

5. Amadpur Rajbari

Amadpur Rajbari is another heritage homestay in the village of Amadpur. It takes about two hours to reach this place by car from Kolkata.

This old structure is embellished with high ceilings, elegant verandahs, and antique furnishings. There are twelve terracotta temples in the rajbari dating back more than five centuries. The magnificent orchards and lakes are ideal spots for photography.

There are natural pools for a pleasant soak, and the surrounding scenery is evergreen with well-known attractions like Baithkkhana, Dol Mancha, and Shiva temple. For centuries, the Rajbari have celebrated Durga Puja, Kali Puja, and Dol Jatra with grandeur.

You can enjoy authentic Bengali cuisine prepared here in a traditional homemade manner with the hand-ground masala paste. Posto Bora, Shukto , and Labhra with fish, mutton, and chicken, as well as local Mishti Doi, are the most popular cuisines here.

Overall, Boro bari will fill your heart with immense pleasure.

6. Kalna Rajbari

Kalna Rajbari Complex is a popular historic landmark situated in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal.

The glorious attraction of the beautiful terracotta temples within the rajbari complex dates back to the 18th century. These temples were built by the Maharajas of Bardhaman.

The entire Raj Bari Complex consists of a plethora of temples namely The Pratapeshwar Temple, Ras Mancha, Pancharatna Temple, Lalji Temple, Vijay Vidyanath Temple, and Krishna Chamdraji. These temples represent stunning architecture and regal cultures.

They have finely carved intricate designs of terracotta and many important gods and goddesses of Hindu Mythology are worshipped here. The terracotta panels also depict battle scenarios from great epics and daily lives in the past.

The temples along with the large green complex, with well-maintained lawns and gardens, and the blue skies make it an ideal tourist spot.

7. Cossimbazar Rajbari

Cossimbazar Rajbari front view

Cossimbazar Rajbari is a magnificent palace located in Murshidabad with a blend of Indian and European architecture. This stupendous royal colonnaded facade was founded by the Roys in 1700. Later they transformed some of the rooms into guest rooms and others into a walk-through museum.

The ideal time to visit is during Durga Puja when the family celebrates the yearly rituals in the hall with an open courtyard on a marble platform named ‘Chandi Mandap.’

The Rajbari’s magnificent bedrooms, and dining halls with “Tana Pakha,” eye-catching paintings, chandeliers, finely carved dressing tables, and Victorian-era furniture, are ideal for a lavish stay and wedding festivities.

Nagalingam, The Sabha Ghar, the Malkhana, and the Clock Tower are some of the interesting historical attractions in Cossimbazar Rajbari.

8. Jhargram Rajbari

Jhargram Palace

Jhargram Palace is a wonderful tourist spot with a blend of culture, tradition, heritage, and prolific beauty. It is located in the Jhargram area of Purba Midnapore.

This palatial structure combines Islamic and Italian architectural styles. The exquisite Italianate building built in 1922 CE under Raja Narasingha Malla Dev Bahadur, is situated in well-maintained landscaped lawns and gardens.

The Royal family of Malla Dev currently resides in this royal Palace. They have transformed about 10 rooms on the ground floor into a Heritage Hotel with well-furnished rooms, ponds, and restaurants.

The Palace campus, which is reminiscent of a regal existence, brings glory to a past life.

There are also temples near the Rajbari that are dedicated to Lokeswar, Lord Bishnu, four-faced Shiva, and Manasa Devi.

9. Kashipur Rajbari

The Kashipur Rajbari is a well-known heritage palace located in Purulia. It was constructed in 1916 in Kashipur. The 800-old Rajbari has housed the Royal family of Panchakot.

It was a melting pot of rich legacies, classical music, and poetry. Many Navaratna meetings were held here by scholars.

A huge chandelier is the main attraction of the court hall of Rajbari. Special exhibits of Kashipur Rajbari are the Belgian-painted glass, stone statues, and weapons like swords and spears used by the Kings.

The grand place has an ancient Durga Temple and numerous significant antiquities. Festivals like Ras Utsav, Dol, and Durga puja are celebrated with grandeur and fervor in the Rajbari.

The history of Purulia is incomplete without the opulent palace and the rich history of Kashipur.

These imperial palaces may be a pleasant refuge for individuals who love to paint, write, or take stunning photographs. These heritage locations were seen in movies like Lootera, Piku, and the Netflix movie Bulbul.

Many couples visit these destinations for pre-wedding shootings as well.
