The Time New York (Expedia)

1. The Time New York, Times Square

Best for theatre lovers This swank retreat is truly in the heart of New York , just steps from Times Square, Rockefeller Center and the Theater District, and just ten minutes from Central Park. The 192 rooms and suites are quiet havens done up in dark tones, modern wood furniture and sleek lighting fixtures, while the large round mirrors and brushed gold accents are a modern nod to the art deco era. Have a craft cocktail or nibble before dinner or the theatre at the LeGrande Lounge, tucked away on the mezzanine, or stop in to prolong your evening with a nightcap.

Yotel (hotels.com)

2. Yotel, Midtown West

Best for urban explorers Everything is shipshape at this hotel, where the 669 guest rooms are known as cabins and provide tight but well-designed quarters. And what else do you need when you’re out most of the day and night enjoying everything Manhattan and the rest of the city has to offer? The hotel’s terrace bar and restaurant Social Drink and Food is one of the largest in the city and does a neat line in cocktails and bites. Check in at the self-service kiosks, and if you need to store your suitcase after checking out before your flight home, take advantage of the Yobot, the robot arm that will lift it up into the wall of lockers near the hotel lobby.

3. The Bernic Hotel, Midtown East

Best for business travellers A few blocks north of Grand Central Station, this Turtle Bay hotel is close to Midtown offices and restaurants. The 96 rooms have small desks with office chairs, hardwood floors, and most of them have balconies, a rarity in Manhattan, while the well-proportioned, well-lit bathrooms have underfloor heating and rainfall showers. Up at the rooftop bar and lounge Alto (open in spring and summer only) you’ll find views across the East River to Long Island City and of the chandelier top of the Chrysler Building.

Pod 51 (hotels.com)

4. Pod 51, Midtown East

Best for mod design This bright and colourful Midtown hotel is all about maximising space and fun for a mix of mostly young leisure travellers. The lobby and hallways are decorated with oversized murals by contemporary artist JM Rizzi, while the Clinton Hall restaurant and courtyard beer garden have games to play indoors and out. The compact rooms are on the smaller side, but the 14th-floor rooftop garden and deck is filled with Adirondack chairs in bright shades, all the better for lounging against a backdrop of office towers.

The Kimpton Muse (booking.com)

5. The Kimpton Muse, Times Square

Best for families Just off Times Square in the heart of Manhattan and steps from the Theater District, this boutique hotel offers guests a modern twist on art deco design, with the dramatic gold-accented lobby setting the tone. The Muse Bar is a stylish spot to start or end the evening, and families will appreciate the relatively large rooms (for New York), with a number of two-bed rooms and suites and the ability to reserve a cluster of rooms together. Bikes for adults and kickboard scooters (and helmets) for kids are available for free rental.

Freehand New York (booking.com)

6. Freehand New York, Flatiron

Best for hostel lovers who want more The Gallery, the greenery-and-light filled first-floor lounge space, is the millennial version of a palm court, providing a chlorophyll chill space for the urban traveller. Rooms designed by Roman and Williams offer updated Seventies chic with platform beds, woven wall hangings and throw rugs, while original hand-painted murals from Bard College art students cover the walls. Find the fun in the communal spaces and activities, especially at Broken Shaker, the tiki-jungle of a rooftop bar that has cracking views of the Chrysler building straight up Lexington Avenue and the rest of the Midtown skyline.

The Kixby (booking.com)

7. The Kixby, Midtown

Best for charming details and a great burger The high-ceilinged rooms are painted in a calming blue, paired with plank floors and beds and dressers hand-crafted by Amish and Mennonite communities in Ohio, to give a feeling of respite in this boutique hotel near busy Herald Square and within walking distance of the Empire State Building. The common areas retain some original detail of the 1901 building, updated with velvet couches and brass details. Dine on one of the city’s best burgers at Black Tap and head up to the Lookup Rooftop bar on the 12th floor in summer for nibbles and cocktails with a view.

• Best New York City neighbourhoods

Hotel Hendricks (hotels.com)

8. Hotel Hendricks, Midtown

Best for animal lovers The tiger stripes and giraffe spots above the beds, zebra-print chairs in the rooms and in the amber-lit bar, plus numerous cheetah patterns, plus the pet-friendly policy, make this the hotel for stylish lovers of our four-footed friends. The hotel is set back from 38th Street, which allows it to have a generous outdoor café seating, while the rooftop Daintree Bar serves sunset views alongside cocktails and Australian-Asian small plates.

The Jane (hotels.com)

9. The Jane, West Village

Best for communal types This historic 1908 hotel in the far West Village was once a sailor’s rest, designed by the architect responsible for the Ellis Island immigrant station, and survivors of the Titanic stayed here in 1912 after arriving in New York. It’s now a stylish budget boutique, where many of the rooms have shared bathrooms. Its far West Village/Meatpacking District location means it’s just steps from the High Line, the Whitney Museum, and Little Island, the Heatherwick-designed park built on the ruins of the old Cunard-White Star Line pier (not only where the Titanic survivors arrived, but from which the Lusitania departed in 1915).

Arlo Soho (hotels.com)

10. Arlo Soho

Best for space savers The rooms at design-focused Arlo Soho redefine micro-decor: bedside lamps hang from the ceiling, the desktop drops down, the TV is affixed to the wall; but with floor-to-ceiling views, the overall feeling is quite spacious. The communal areas are large and varied — the wide-open ART rooftop bar and lounge with its views of the Hudson River; the day-to-evening Library; and bookable cabins (for dinner) in the Courtyard. The grab-and-go Bodega sells Intelligentsia coffee and sweets from Dylan’s Candy Bar.

The Paper Factory Hotel (Expedia)

11. The Paper Factory Hotel, Long Island City, Queens

Best for industrial chic This low-rise boutique hotel in a former paper factory in Long Island City has large, loft-style rooms with large windows, fluted steel columns, and polished concrete floors. The hotel has a load of well-designed common areas including a 24-hour gym, a games room with shuffleboard, an outdoor courtyard, and co-working spaces and lounges filled with a mix of pouffes, Victorian couches and brass tables. Just 15 minutes from Midtown Manhattan, LIC also is home to the Museum of the Moving Image, and has a growing number of galleries, restaurants and hip bars to explore.

Boro Hotel (hotels.com)

12. Boro Hotel, Long Island City, Queens

Best for contemporary design Concrete pillars, plank flooring, translucent bookcases, and floor-to-ceiling, unobstructed views of the Queensboro Bridge and the east side of Manhattan give this hotel a sleek chic factor. The lobby lounge is stocked with books from New York’s famed Strand Bookstore, with cube-like couches and a mod, open fireplace. The rooftop bar has Negronis on tap and unmatched sunsets.

13. The Hoxton Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Best for boho comfort It makes sense that the Hoxton’s first New York hotel is in Williamsburg, which shares a certain amount of hipster DNA with Shoreditch, the OG locale. In the airy lobby lounge, plush club chairs and divans in mismatched florals and stripes are artfully scattered around the white-tiled fireplaces, and long communal tables up the creative-class vibe. Take it outside and sit under the catenary lights in the brick courtyard, or head to the Laser Wolf, the new rooftop Israeli skewer house and bar from one of Philadelphia’s top chefs — or get out and explore the neighbourhood on one of the hotel’s vintage bicycles.

Spa N Pool N Price £££

Ace Hotel Brooklyn (hotels.com)

14. Ace Hotel Brooklyn, Boerum Hill

B est for those in the know The Ace lobbies are known for being super hip but relaxed — and just as appealing to guests as locals. This natural-toned space with concrete walls, wood accents, leather couches, and long tables is no exception. A curving cocktail bar beckons from the back wall, and has an accessible low section for wheelchair users. The hotel’s As You Are restaurant is a destination dinner spot, but be sure to grab a morning pastry too — the pastel de nata are a piece of custardy heaven.

  • Financial District

Peering up at The Beekman's breathtaking nine-story atrium, you can’t help but be dazzled by its towering majesty. The maze of gold and brown balconies highlighted by a striking glass pyramid ceiling is nothing short of enchanting - and that vintage charm extends to every room, adding a touch of timeless elegance. The hotel is known for exceptional design and top-notch service but The Beekman doesn't just excel in aesthetics; it also boasts an incredible spot in the Financial District. It’s within easy reach of the Brooklyn Bridge, making it a perfect base to explore everything New York has to offer.

The mood? Pure extravagance. Location perks? Stop by one of the hotel’s three top-notch restaurants for some seriously fancy dining: Temple Court and The Bar Room by Chef Tom Colicchio, plus Le Gratin by Chef Daniel Boulud. Budget-wise? Falls into the mid-range to high-end spectrum.

Crosby Street Hotel, Soho

3.  Crosby Street Hotel, Soho

The Kit Kemp-designed gem on Soho’s Crosby Street is just dripping with coolness. With its industrial exterior and a lush sun-soaked courtyard perfect for afternoon tea, there are few spots in the city that are more inviting. Start your morning with a coffee in the building’s stunning common areas before stepping out onto the cobblestone street to explore the city. Whether you're uncovering the neighborhood's secret spots or diving into the city's hustle and bustle, there's a plush bed and those majestic factory windows just waiting for your return. There’s even a 24-hour gym available for guests, y’know if you want to pump some iron during your stay.

The mood? Total contemporary romance. Location perks? Smack dab in the heart of Soho. You’re next to the Museum of Modern Art Design and just one block from the Spring Street subway station. Budget-wise? Spenny AF.

The William Vale, Williamsburg

4.  The William Vale, Williamsburg

Looking for a room with a killer view? The William Vale has you covered with its 183 modern-luxe rooms, boasting floor-to-ceiling windows and open-air balconies that overlook the iconic Manhattan skyline. After a relaxing afternoon spent lounging by the hotel’s 60-foot outdoor pool (decked out with pergolas, daybeds, and cabanas), head over to the onsite restaurant Leuca, where award-winning chef, Andrew Carmellini works his magic serving up delicious South Italian fare, including epic wood-fired pizzas. And if pool-side chilling isn’t your vibe, getting to the heart of the Big Apple couldn’t be easier, with endless transportation options right at your doorstep.

The mood? It's all about modern excellence. Location perks? Yes, we’ve mentioned the rooftop pool already but it seriously is a game-changer. The views of Manhattan and the East River are pretty memorable. Budget-wise? Get ready to splurge; this one's on the pricier side.

Boro Hotel, Long Island

5.  Boro Hotel, Long Island

  • Long Island City
  • price 2 of 4

Sure, staying in Manhattan is cool, but crossing the East River lands you with some breathtaking views of The City skyline. When booking a stay here, opt for Boro, Long Island City's first design-centric hotel, and enjoy minimalist, industrial-chic rooms flooded with natural light - thanks to those floor-to-ceiling windows. After sundown, hit up the lobby bar for a solid lineup of beer, wine, and craft cocktails until 11 pm. But, we won’t blame you if you’d rather turn in early - those pillow-top mattresses and plush Italian bedding are pretty hard to resist. When you're up for some exploring, Long Island City's beating heart is right at your fingertips. This one’s tough to beat.

The mood? Soak up that big city life. Location perks? Incredible views of both the Manhattan skyline and Long Island. Oh, and every room comes with an open-air balcony. Pretty sweet, right?  Budget-wise? Surprisingly affordable, making it a win-win.

The Frederick Hotel, Tribeca

6.  The Frederick Hotel, Tribeca

Originally opened in 1845 as the Gerard House, the Frederick Hotel holds a rich history with a parade of notable guests - it’s rumored Abraham Lincoln himself took a nap here in the 1850s, and Vincent Gallo paid just $22 a week for a room back in the early '80s. Times have changed since then, so expect to shell out a bit more now, but trust us, it's worth every penny. This place has been through a complete transformation, sporting 130 thoughtfully designed rooms that blend vintage charm with a minimalist vibe. And the food is pretty great too, with three stories of the Serafina Italian restaurant serving up amazing food round the clock.

The mood? It's like your hotel home away from home. Location perks? Nestled downtown, you're just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the World Financial Center, Chinatown, and Wall Street. Budget-wise? Pretty reasonable for NYC, all things considered.

Arlo, Soho

7.  Arlo, Soho

  • West Village

You might have plans to explore New York, but when the hotel's offerings are this good, you might just find yourself never wanting to step out. Arlo Soho hooks you up with some seriously cool on-site activities. From "Cozy AF Knitting" classes where you can learn to knit those cool fingerless gloves to mixology classes where you can master the art of shaking, straining, and stirring, this place has got it all. And, when hunger strikes, Harold’s Meat + Three, the hotel's restaurant, has your back with a feast fit for a king. Think hot chicken, Japanese sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, and blistered shishito peppers - now that's what we call bliss.

The mood? Total sleek design. Location perks? Soho's your base, putting you super close to One World Trade Center, Ellis Island, and a whole lot more.  Budget-wise? It’s kind of in the mid-range zone but feels super high-end.

The Ludlow, Lower East Side

8.  The Ludlow, Lower East Side

  • Lower East Side

This Lower East Side gem is like a chic dark dream, rocking somber color schemes, loads of wrought iron, and the occasional cowhide accent here and there. After a long day pounding the pavements, sink into your room’s bath and soak away the fatigue before indulging in a glass of wine in bed - or better yet, out on the terrace. Once you’re all relaxed, step out to discover nearby attractions like The Lower East Side Tenement Museum (just 500 yards away) or The New Museum (a quick 650-yard stroll). Plus, with the subway close by, Manhattan and Brooklyn are right within reach.

The mood? Bougie, but in a zen kind of way. Location perks? Enjoy killer city views with easy access to Manhattan's East Side. Budget-wise? Offers a lot of bang for your buck.

Greenwich Hotel, Tribeca

Get your credit cards ready because Tribeca’s elegant Greenwich Hotel, owned by none other than Robert De Niro, is the epitome of lavish living. It’s all about solitude, subtlety, and privacy here, with access to fine dining that, of course, comes at a price. You’ll be staying in Tribeca too, meaning if you do decide to venture beyond the hotel's luxury, there's a world of activities right at your doorstep.

The mood? Total luxury overload. Location perks? Did we mention there’s an underground pool and fitness center? You don’t see that every day in NYC. Budget-wise? Spenny as heck.

Its minimalist-chic design and strong dedication to philanthropy make it a place that appeals both aesthetically and morally - without skrimping on any of the necessary creature comforts. Each room is decorated with Scandinavian-inspired furnishings and custom artwork with 48-inch flat-screen TVs, free toiletries, and ridiculously comfortable beds. You'll want for nothing at the Chelsea Hotel – they've covered every basis, with their concierge service, fitness suite, spa, and a plethora of dining-in options. Plus, while many hotels of this size (88 guest rooms) don't have much when it comes to on-site facilities, the Greenwich has an underground pool, the Shibui Spa, an excellent gym, and the homestyle Italian Locanda Verde restaurant.

Gramercy Park Hotel

Gramercy and murray hill, new york city, new york, united states.

The Gramercy Park Hotel currently sets the bar for New York cool -- hence the celebrities in the lounge and the paparazzi on the sidewalk. It offers ultra-luxe but small rooms done up in high boho-chic style, a gorgeous gym, an acclaimed Italian trattoria, and a great rooftop bar. True, even guests sometimes feel excluded from the glamour-fest in the bar. But the place is utterly unique.

The NoMad Hotel New York

Flatiron, new york city, new york, united states.

Centrally located near Madison Square Park, The NoMad (which shares its name with the surrounding neighborhood north of Madison Square Park) is a luxurious, impeccably designed hotel with attentive service but limited features (there's no spa or business center). The hotel's focal point is its eponymous bar and restaurant, featuring five separate-but-connected spaces that sprawl along the ground floor. Guests can order cocktails in the cozy, book-lined Library or order brunch in the sun-filled Atrium room, though they should be prepared for price tags that match the high level of style. The 168 guest rooms are luxurious (there are Sferra linens, Frette towels, and robes), and successfully evoke a bygone era with Persian rugs, old maps, and antique-looking fixtures.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The Bowery Hotel

East village, new york city, new york, united states.

It may be on New York's former Skid Row and decked out with distressed furniture and preciously faded rugs, but the Bowery Hotel is pure faux-vintage luxury inside the outstanding rooms. LED flat-screen TVs, custom Turkish sheets and wool blankets, marble bathrooms to die for, and great views of the city from floor-to-ceiling windows are all standard. On-site Italian restaurant Gemma and the low-key and boho-chic lobby bar are both very popular, even among the mercurial downtown set.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The James New York SoHo

Soho, new york, united states.

This 114-room Soho boutique, with a stunning rooftop bar and pool, great freebies (including free Wi-Fi and free nightly wine and cheese), restaurant by David Burke, and a hotel art curator, embodies the hip, creative neighborhood it inhabits. Its bright, minimalist rooms are smaller than those at some of its luxury competitors, but they're full of enough thoughtful details to make up for it.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Wythe Hotel

Brooklyn, new york, united states.

With a hopping rooftop bar boasting jaw-dropping views of Manhattan, a wonderful restaurant, and cutting-edge industrial design, the Wythe is a destination unto itself. It’s located near the subway as well as dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops in the heart of trendy Williamsburg. Rooms are spacious and have high pine ceilings, reclaimed wood furnishings, and great amenities, including flat-screen TVs; local, hand-made toiletries; free Wi-Fi, and radiant floor heating. But noise can be a problem, and thelobby and the elevators can get crowded with non-guests on weekends.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Refinery Hotel

Midtown west, new york city, new york, united states.

This stylish urban boutique hotel in New York's Garment District is located in a historic building that was once a tea salon and hat factory. The property's past inspired its present industrial-chic design, and small details such as decorative milliner's tools pay homage to the building's former function. In the lobby, cool white stone and Gothic arches are contrasted against colorful contemporary art, while in the rooms, a minimalist black-and-white motif is warmed up by the oak hardwood floors. Features include afitness center, a lobby bar (named for the historic tea salon's owner), Parker & Quinn bistro, and a cool rooftop bar. The location is within walking distance of popular sights such as the Empire State Building, Bryant Park, and Herald Square.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

WestHouse Hotel New York

The WestHouse Hotel New York is one of the city's most special boutiques, and easily one of the most luxurious intimate options in this price range in Midtown West. It's on a prime square of real estate, with several train stations within a two block radius and close proximity to numerous sights, including Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park. The decor is sophisticated, from the marble columns, wall maps and quirky trinkets in the lobby to the 1920s-inspired furnishings in the hotel's 172 rooms and suites. The numerous daily food and drink offerings -- from the breakfast to the happy hour with charcuterie -- add a homey feel, and most guests feel that they are worth the daily fee.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Hotel Americano

Chelsea, new york city, new york, united states.

Chelsea's 56-room, Euro-Asian boutique Hotel Americano is one of New York's newer luxury hotels and one of its artsiest; it opened in Chelsea in 2011 with the goal of attracting an art and design crowd. Thoughtful room amenities include hidden storage, personal iPads, hanging fireplaces, and luxurious (if small) bathrooms with Aesop products and rainfall showerheads. The 14th-floor rooftop grill, lounge, and seasonal pool is a standout feature, and is especially popping during the hotel’s summer pool parties. It’s an ideal spot for younger couples and business folk not on a budget -- and while the proximity to the Hudson River is nice, it also means the hotel is a bit farther from public transport.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Soho Grand Hotel

With chic decor and a youthful, almost-nightly party scene in the lounge, the Soho Grand offers an authentic but accessible taste of the hip downtown scene -- and still attracts its fair share of celebrities. The trendy restaurant and bars, a well-equipped gym, and a generous pet policy make it a top pick for creative types. Rooms are comfortable and well equipped.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Crosby Street Hotel

The 86-room Crosby Street Hotel is just off Broadway, meaning that it's steps from SoHo shopping but can still feel like a peaceful retreat. As if to drive the point home, there's even a sculpture garden for quiet contemplation. Rooms start at 340 square feet -- big, for New York -- and have great design, nice lighting, fine Frette linens, even heated towel racks. The one thing you won't find? An alarm clock -- though, given the tranquil vibe, we should've expected it to go missing.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The Chatwal A Luxury Collection Hotel New York City

Times square nyc, new york city, new york, united states.

This 76-room luxury boutique hotel in a landmark building near Times Square evokes the glamorous 1920s. Rooms combine high quality linens and beds with playful touches like backgammon sets, custom playing cards, and desks that look like steamer trunks. The rooms here meet all of the modern luxury standards, but they also include fun decor that bring guests back to the Jazz Age. For example, the closets and desk are covered in pebbled leather, both designed to look like trunks you would have seen on a steamship in the early 20th century, and the desk top lifts up to reveal a lighted vanity. A restaurant by Geoffrey Zakarian and a small, lovely spa are the hotel's stand-out features.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

AKA Tribeca

The 100-room Smyth is an upscale boutique hotel with coolly curated residential style and understated rooms, some with dead-on views of One World Trade Center. Anchored by a star-chef restaurant and a posh speakeasy-style bar, the hotel's first floor is a collection of living rooms, ideal for socializing and relaxing. Its trendy TriBeCa location, on the border of the Financial District, puts guests steps to the subway (literally -- it's on the corner), and within walking distance of great dining and the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Ace Hotel New York

The meticulously curated, vintage-inspired design will be a turn-off for some -- the Ace doesn't aspire to most conventional notions of luxury -- but the property is as cool, comfortable, and inviting in its own way as any fancy downtown hipster boutique. Rooms are a bit small, and in some cases dark. But service is solid and the rates are usually very fair.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The Time New York

At 193 rooms, The Time in Midtown Manhattan is a bit larger than the average boutique hotel, but it still retains the typical boutique vibe. Its 2015 Rockwell Group-led renovation gave the property a super-chic, modern look (though it couldn't do anything about the cramped bathrooms). Suites with separate bedrooms and living areas are also available. Features include a lounge bar; an Italian restaurant with a huge pizza menu; event, meeting, and private-dining space; and a small but sleek fitness center.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The Standard, East Village

The Standard, East Village is one of the hottest properties in the newly hip Bowery area of Manhattan's East Village. The hotel's crown jewel may be the fact that is it home to one of the city's most sought-after restaurants, Narcissa, but great city views, a lovely garden for cocktails, and freebies such as Wi-Fi and bicycle rentals are all pluses. Rooms, albeit sleek with brand-new everything, are small -- even by New York standards -- and the hotel has few on-site amenities; there is no spa or fitness center, but guests do get free access to the Crunch gym across the street.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The High Line Hotel

This chic 60-room boutique hotel opened its doors in 2013, taking up residence in a section of a still-working theological seminary dating back to the 1800s. In the warmer months, guests can enjoy champagne and oysters on the outdoor terrace restaurant, and Intelligentsia Coffee (from Chicago) serves serious caffeine fixes and local pastries in the lobby year-round. Luxurious rooms and suites haveplush king beds, pine wood floors, unique antique furnishings, bathrobes and CO Bigelow bath products. There are a series of meeting and event rooms next door at Hoffman Hall, including the Harry Potter-esque "Refectory" -- a big draw for weddings and fashion runway shows. Just note that the hotel is still working through a few service and maintenance kinks.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The Nolitan Hotel

Nolita, new york city, new york, united states.

The Nolitan is a boutique with tiny, simple, and charming rooms that are very appropriate for its neighborhood. The soft-industrial motif is similar to that of The James: Rooms take on a retro-modern style with exposed cement poles and ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, high-design furniture, and cool touches such as drawers under the bed and safes and minibars hidden in nightstands. There's a distinct lack of bathroom privacy, however: In some units (such as Neighborhood Corner Rooms), bathrooms are entirely open to the rest of room, while others have exposed glass showers (granted, there's a privacy curtain). But the healthy amounts of natural light and great views go a long way in making everything feel homey.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Lower East Side, New York City, New York, United States

This gorgeous 141-room boutique joined other high-end hotels and restaurants to help revitalized the once-gritty Lower East Side neighborhood, which is known for its raucous late-night activity. For well-heeled hipsters looking for downtown action, the cool design, attentive staff, fitness center, and pool combine to make this a very fine place to crash after a night out.

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

The Paper Factory Hotel

Long island city, new york, united states.

The Paper Factory Hotel is a boutique property with 123 loft-style guest rooms and suites. Located in Astoria's trendy Kaufman Art District in Queens, this hip mid-range hotel occupies a former 100-year-old paper factory and retains many industrial accents and unique vintage details. Guest rooms are spacious and light-filled, while the Lofts are huge, with separate living areas and kitchenettes, though there have been some complaints about noise issues due to poor soundproofing. Mundo, the on-site restaurant and bar, is known for is quality Peruvian and Argentinean cuisine. Other features include a 24-hour fitness center, a game room, and a guest lounge with a kitchen.

It’s not hard to find a good time in New York , but it can be a challenge finding a good hotel . With so many options crammed into a boggling array of hot neighbourhoods, how do you know what’s worth the famously sky-high prices? The good news: it is possible to bag a (relatively) reasonable rate, without sacrificing on the Big Apple’s signature cool style.

Choosing somewhere with independent flair helps you find the vibe that matches what you want out of your travels in the US , whether that’s partying on the Lower East Side, living the high life on the Upper East Side (which will cost you), or going full hipster in Williamsburg .

While tourists tend to be drawn into the thick of Midtown mania, there are more interesting districts for getting a feel for Manhattan – and don’t discount the other boroughs. Brooklyn is arguably NYC’s hottest hood these days, while affordable Queens is a compelling mix of old-school locals and new-school cool.

  • Best budget hotels in New York 2023: Where to stay for style, location and value for money
  • 10 of the best New York rooftop bars

The best boutique hotels in New York 2023 are:

  • Best for party people: Public
  • Best for exploring modern Manhattan: The High Line Hotel
  • Best for an urban sanctuary: 1 Hotel Central Park
  • Best for old-school style: The Lowell

Best Brooklyn hotel: Wythe Hotel

Best cheap but chic hotel: the paper factory.

  • Best for dining: The New York EDITION
  • Best for design nerds: The Beekman

Best hotel for a hipster pool party: The William Vale

Best hotel for party people: public, neighbourhood: lower east side.

The neon “disco” escalators ought to be your first clue this is an Ian Schrager enterprise; the second is the pervading party atmosphere, because what else would you expect from the legendary co-founder of Studio 54? With a prime location in the midst of the scrappy and happening Lower East Side, with Soho and the East Village right next door, the scene at Public is enough that we wouldn’t blame you for staying inside. A lamp-lit, ivy-strung courtyard is the setting for seasonal plates, while the sexy rooftop bar has daybeds and 360-degree views. Rooms are small, but impeccably designed, with huge windows serving up skyline views.

Price: Doubles from $229 (£188)

Best hotel for exploring modern Manhattan: The High Line Hotel

Neighbourhood: chelsea.

There’s a pleasingly old-school feel about this hotel, set in a Gothic-style, 19th-century seminary: think antique rugs, decorative fireplaces, vintage furniture and rotary-dial phones. The neighbourhood, though, is anything but. Two of New York’s most popular attractions are right on the doorstep: the wildly successful High Line – an elevated, pedestrian-only park set on a disused railway track – and Hudson Yards, home to the Escher-esque, 150ft Vessel (a sculpture and staircase in one). Not to be outdone, the hotel has its finger on the pulse, too: the cocktail garden, Ingo’s, was among the first in the city to mix a “Frozen Negroni”, now a summer staple.

Price: Doubles from $340 (£277)

Best hotel for an urban sanctuary: 1 Hotel Central Park

Neighbourhood: midtown.

An oasis in the thick of Manhattan’s busiest neighbourhood, this is a “best of both worlds” option, close to the flashy theatres of Times Square, Fifth Avenue’s bougie department stores and the calm of Central Park’s placid lakes and picnic lawns. A “living”, ivy-covered exterior, and rooms featuring lots of salvaged barn wood and hanging plants, instil a sense of zen – try snagging a room with a window seat overlooking the park. The nature theme continues through to the restaurant, where acclaimed chef Jonathan Waxman – credited with bringing California’s farm-to-table ethos to the Big Apple – plates bright, fresh, seasonal flavours, in an airy space of exposed brick and reclaimed oak.

Hotel Amenities

Health & wellbeing, best hotel for old-school style: the lowell, neighbourhood: upper east side.

Join the Manhattan elite on the Upper East Side, where this privately owned boutique hotel channels Park Avenue pomp. We’re talking Persian rugs, original fireplaces, afternoon tea in the salon, and sinking into a velvet banquette for a stiff nightcap at the bar. Some suites have private, landscaped terraces with Central Park views, and you can expect in-room treats such as Dean & DeLuca gourmet goodies, marble baths, and cashmere throws. From the high life (Hermès next door), to the high-minded (Museum Mile a little further up Fifth), this is all about classic elegance – right down to the personalised service (you’ve got to love a porter who brings macarons to the room).

Neighbourhood: Williamsburg

The epitome of Williamsburg cool, this former factory offers enough original brick, pine beams and concrete floors to make even the most hirsute hipster blush. Views from the rooms’ oversized, iron-framed factory windows are outstanding – sweeping over Williamsburg’s industrial waterfront to the Empire State Building – and, if you’re feeling extra flush, you can stay in your own ridiculously cool, duplex loft. There’s a rooftop bar and farm-to-table restaurant (natch), but given you’re staying in the heart of Brooklyn’s most hoppin’ neighbourhood, missing out on the vintage markets, elevated fried chicken restaurants and arcade bars outside would be a mistake.

Neighbourhood: Long Island City

Need convincing Queens is a thing? Look no further than this 100-year-old former paper factory, now an artsy, design-led hotel. Exposed pipes and “Instagrammable moments” (see the soaring pillar of books in the lobby) give off decidedly Brooklyn vibes, but this borough-on-the-up has its own charms, and offers more affordable rates to boot. While you’re only across the river from Midtown Manhattan – and have the skyline views to prove it – Long Island City itself is full of great cocktail bars, creative restaurants (mmm, brisket ramen) and museums. Neighbouring Astoria is also a top spot, particularly for a swim at Astoria Park pool, in the shadow of Robert F Kennedy Bridge.

Best hotel for dining: The New York EDITION

Neighbourhood: flatiron.

Set within the striking Metropolitan Life Clock Tower, right by Madison Square Park, this 273-room boutique is all sleek-and-sexy sophistication. And just as seductive as its silk rugs and lasciviously curvy staircase are the views: upper floors ogle the Empire State Building, while the slender Flatiron is just two blocks west. The hotel is particularly tasty, however, for gourmand guests. Its restaurant, The Clocktower, offers upscale takes on American classics. Meanwhile, directly next door, former world’s best restaurant Eleven Madison Park dishes up a triple-Michelin-starred 10 courses. Wear something with an elasticated waist.

Best hotel for design nerds: The Beekman

Neighbourhood: financial district.

One of New York’s first-ever high-rises, 5 Beekman Street’s red-brick, turreted grandeur was left tragically derelict for decades. That is, until the Thompson Hotel Group swooped in, and polished up some mercifully preserved original features: the central, nine-level atrium, with cast-iron railings leading up to a pyramidal skylight, is a jaw-dropper. Happily, you can gawp up at it with a signature cocktail in the sumptuous bar. There’s something cinematic about The Beekman’s meticulously arranged interiors, as though you’ve stepped into a glamorous Gothic fairy tale. If you can drag yourself away, the redeveloped World Trade Centre and 9/11 Museum are a five-minute walk away, as is the pedestrian path over Brooklyn Bridge.

Williamsburg isn’t just warehouses-turned-galleries and beardy blokes on bikes. Now the ’burg is basically a byword for “happening”, a more glamorous side to Brooklyn’s best neighbourhood is emerging, epitomised by The William Vale. In a new-build glass tower, all 183 rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with knockout views across the East River. Better still, everyone gets an open-air balcony, big enough for pulling up a seat and watching the sunset spread over Manhattan. The pièce de résistance, though? Its 60ft outdoor pool, surrounded by luxe loungers and cabanas. Add in Frette sheets, a popular rooftop bar, burgers served from a vintage Airstream and, just a block away, the famed Brooklyn Bowl, and this just might be NYC’s best address.

Crosby Street Hotel

Crosby_Street_Hotel_Soho_New_York_Booking

5 stars | In my opinion, the design hotel “Crosby Street Hotel” is one of the most beautiful hotels in all of New York. Like “The Mercer”, it is located in trendy and exclusive SoHo in the direct vicinity of the Museum of Modern Art Design (MOMA). The area is perfect for going out, shopping and eating!

The 86 rooms and suites are super-stylish. The rooms are large, high, open and bright. The interior – for which Kit Kemp is responsible – offers a wonderful contrast to the loft-like windows , which are huge and reach down to the floor. Everything looks modern, but not without warmth. An absolute design highlight! The Crosby Bar & Terrace offers high standard food at any time of day – the cocktails in particular have a very good reputation.

Boutique Hotel The Chatwal at Times Square

The_Chatwal__a_Luxury_Collection_Hotel__New_York_City

5 stars | This is one of the most luxurious hotels in Times Square. This Art Deco boutique hotel is located just a 5-minute walk from Broadway’s best theaters. The establishment is famous for its old-school luxury, with service that includes a butler in every room. It is also home to a prestigious spa, the highest quality linens, plush bathrobes and every luxury accessory imaginable.

The Lambs Club at the Chatwal is a bar and grill restaurant offering classic American cuisine, revamped and with touches of haute cuisine. The restaurant has a 232 m² lounge located on a mezzanine level and equipped with 20-foot windows overlooking the city. The Chatwal Hotel in Times Square is unbeatable if you are looking to disconnect from the real world and spend a few days in decadent luxury in the best city in the world.

Boutique Hotel Walker in Tribeca

hotel_walker_tribeca_chinatown_nyc_276344893

4 stars | This beautiful boutique hotel is strategically located between the Tribeca and Chinatown neighborhoods, two of the most unique areas of New York. Its location, combined with its beautiful design of sober lines and colors, makes the Walker Tribeca one of the ideal places to rest after a busy day discovering the city.

Boutique Hotel Walker in Greenwich Village

Best Hotels in Greenwich Village NYC

4 Stars | This boutique hotel is located in the heart of Greenwich Village (such a beautiful area) and offers everything you would expect from this kind of place: The interior design is very aesthetic and reminiscent of the roaring 20s. Small details, such as a retro telephone, adorn the rooms and just make the place quite special. Simply beautiful!

The William NYC

New_York_Hotel_Tipp_The_William_Hotel_in_Murray_Hill_NYC

4 stars | The William Hotel in Murray Hill is a design hotel in New York and ideal for self-catering, because the rooms have their own small kitchenette with refrigerator. Like a boutique hotel, each hotel room and suite is furnished with its own style. It has a really good restaurant “The Shakespeare Pub & The Garden Room” and a great bar to offer.

Boutique Hotel The Whitby

Luxus_Boutique_Hotel_New_York_The_Whitby_Hotel

5 stars | The Whitby Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel in New York not far from Rockefeller Center, Central Park , 5th Avenue and the Museum of Modern Art. For me, it is one of the most beautiful hotels in the city, because it is not only beautifully furnished – it has a very special charm that I like very much.

The hotel rooms at the Whitby Hotel have floor-to-ceiling windows and some of them even have a small terrace. If you want something really special, this hotel is a real option for you!

The_Roger_Boutique_Hotel_New_York_Empire_State_Building

4 stars | Roger Hotel is located right next to the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden and many shopping opportunities around Herald Square. The boutique hotel has modernly furnished rooms, some of which offer balconies with views of the city (and the Empire State Building).

The hotel restaurant is very inviting, in part because the menu was created by renowned gourmet chefs and offers a lot of elegant sophistication. Croissants and pastries are served for breakfast, and the Mezzanine lounge invites you to linger with cocktails. The four stars here are definitely justified. The Roger Hotel convinces above all with its urbanity, which fits absolutely perfectly into New York city life.

The Marlton Hotel

The_Marlton_Hotel_Boutique_Hotel_Greenwich_Village_NYC_by_Booking

4 stars | The Marlton Hotel is located in the heart of Greenwich Village – just one block from Washington Square Park. It is a beautiful bohemian-style boutique hotel and feels like a little part of Paris in the middle of New York City.

The building, lobby and rooms have been lovingly restored and have a very special atmosphere.

My tip: Book one of the rooms on the upper floors. They have a balcony from which you can look out over Washington Square Park!

The Bowery Boutique Hotel

The_Bowery_Hotel__East_Village_New_York_Booking

5 Stars | This luxurious boutique hotel offers first-class service and great views of the city from the cozy rooms. If you want to explore New York by bike, you can rent one for free at the hotel.

Boutique Hotel Moxy East Village

Moxy_NYC_East_Village_Hotel_New_York_Booking

4 Stars | Such a stylish hotel! The Moxy NYC in the East Village is the sister hotel of the Moxy Chelsea NYC and is a boutique hotel at its best. The interior is a blast, the people super nice and the location top-notch. Can highly recommend!

Boutique Hotel Le Jolie

LNY_APP_HOTEL_170522164044001-1

3 Stars | You get great bang for your buck at this small boutique hotel. It is located on lively Meeker Avenue and is known for its cozy and comfortable rooms . You can be in Manhattan in eleven minutes by train.

Boutique Hotel Moxy NYC Chelsea

Moxy_NYC_Chelsea_Hotel_Chelsea_NYC_by_Booking

4 Stars | The Moxy NYC Chelsea is one of my insider tips in New York, because it meets my taste exactly: it is built in factory loft style, so you can expect floor-to-ceiling windows with great room height. The view is magnificent, the staff is super nice and everything is freshly renovated. This is how a New York hotel should be!

Boutique Hotel 50 Bowery

Hotel_50_Bowery_Chinatown_New_York_Booking

4 Stars | Hotel 50 in Chinatown New York is a stylish boutique hotel with a cool roof terrace and very stylish rooms. You’ll be right in the middle of the action and within easy walking distance of great spots like the Lower East Side, East Village and Soho.

Despite its location, it is one of the affordable hotels with a view. And the view is really stunning: you can see all of Midtown Manhattan with its incredible skyline. The Empire State Building, Summit One Vanderbilt, Hudson Yards and the Chrysler Building are literally at your feet!

Boutique Hotel SIXTY SoHo

SIXTY_SoHo_Boutique_Hotel_Soho_NYC_Booking

5 Stars | The SIXTY SoHo is not just one of the many 5-star hotels on this list – it’s a real gem. The SIXTY also has to be among the most stylish hotels in the city, for sure. There is a real feel-good atmosphere all around. It almost feels like a stylish, luxurious loft at times and from many of the rooms you have a great view of the city. A luxury hotel with a twist!

Boutique Hotel Royalton Park Avenue

Gansevoort_Park_Avenue_NYC_04

4 stars | One of the best hotels in Midtown is the boutique hotel “Royalton Park Avenue”. Besides a wonderful interior (I really like the style), there is even a rooftop bar and pool.

This area spans 2 levels: one is the lounge and the second is just the rooftop terrace. So if you want to stay in style in the heart of Manhattan, there’s no way around the Royalton Park Avenue.

The Refinery Hotel

190111215815001_Refinery_e1575303174434

4 Stars | I can’t recommend the Refinery Hotel highly enough – it is ideally located (only two blocks away from Bryant Park), has one of the most relaxed rooftop bars in the entire city ( with a view of the Empire State Building ) and the rooms are large and nicely furnished. You’ll definitely feel at home here!

Boutique Hotel The Collective Paper Factory

The_Collective_Paper_Factory_Long_Island_City_Queens_Booking

4 Stars | The name gives it away: This beautiful boutique hotel in Queens used to be a paper mill. Today, the hotel is one of the hippest in the area. All modern rooms are equipped with a s mall kitchen and a flat-screen TV. You can end the evening with a delicious cocktail at the hotel’s own bar.

The Broome Hotel

The_Broome_Soho_New_York_Boutique_Hotel_Booking

4 Stars | The Broome is a boutique hotel in Soho New York: It’s small, nice, exclusive and beautifully furnished . That’s the best way to describe it. By the way, the building was built as early as 1825! – and it radiates that. A very charming place.

The Nolitan Boutique Hotel

Nolitan_Hotel_New_York_Booking

4 Stars | Nolitan Hotel is a small, fine boutique hotel. The decor is modern and clean. What makes it stand out? From your balcony you can enjoy an astonishing view of the Empire State Building and the Williamsburg Bridge . From the lounge on the top floor you can also see the One World Trade Center.

Library Hotel by Library Hotel Collection

Hotel_New_York_Library_Hotel_by_Library_Hotel_Collection

4 stars | Library Hotel by Library Hotel Collection is a small boutique hotel in Murray Hill. If you are looking for a relaxed and stylish hotel, you should check it out! It has beautifully decorated rooms and a rooftop bar where you can end the day!

Highlights like Rockefeller Center, One Vanderbilt, Times Square and the Empire State Building are within easy reach – and since it’s located in the residential area of Murray Hill, it’s wonderfully quiet in the evenings.

Motto by Hilton New York City Chelsea

Motto_by_Hilton_New_York_City_Chelsea_Boutique_Hotel_New_York

4 stars | The “Motto by Hilton New York City Chelsea” distinguishes itself with its prime location in the culturally vibrant Chelsea Arts District, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the lively local scene. As a part of the Hilton family, it merges a unique lifestyle concept with trusted quality.

The rooms are simple, comfortable, and perhaps best of all, come with cable! Plus Motto Chelsea offers pet friendly rooms so that you can bring your pets along with you.

As far as extra amenities go, this hotel offers all the classics. They have an on-site restaurant, a fitness center, and multiple meeting rooms.

Broadway Plaza Boutique Hotel

Broadway_Plaza_Hotel_New_York_Midtown_Booking

3 Stars | The Broadway Plaza Hotel is located just two blocks from the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park and is one of the most popular hotels in the area. It’s a really nice boutique hotel in the heart of the city – definitely a recommendation for me!

Hotel Barrière Fouquet's New York

Hotel_Barriere_Fouquet_s_New_York_by_booking

5 stars | The Hotel Barrière Fouquet’s New York combines Parisian elegance with the modern flair of Manhattan. With 97 rooms and suites designed by Martin Brudnizki, it offers luxurious accommodation and the historic Brasserie Fouquet’s, run by a Michelin-starred chef. A highlight is the opulent penthouse with terrace views of the city. Opened in 2022, the hotel reflects French Art Deco and is located in the lively Tribeca area.

Nine Orchard

Nine Orchard by Booking

4 stars | Located at the intersection of Chinatown and the vibrant Lower East Side (LES) in Downtown New York, Hotel Nine Orchard is a stylish hotel housed in a significant historic building. This building, the former Jarmulowsky Bank, has been carefully restored and transformed into an elegant hotel and culinary destination. Opened in 2022, the boutique hotel offers 113 rooms and suites furnished in the architectural gem dating back to 19123.

The redevelopment of the neoclassical bank building into a luxury boutique hotel blends harmoniously into the energetic neighborhood. Guests are welcomed with an atmosphere of relaxed glamor and excellent cuisine, with restaurants by Ignacio Mattos, among others, inviting guests to linger. The Hotel Nine Orchard thus offers a combination of historic elegance and modern comfort and represents the creative soul of New York City.

Hotel 32|32

Hotel 32|32

Hotel 32|32 offers a unique opportunity to experience New York City like a local. Nestled between Murray Hill and Flatiron, this boutique hotel provides a private, residence-style pied-à-terre. Boutique Hotel Arlo SoHo

Arlo_SoHo_Hotel_Soho_New_York_Booking

4 Stars | The Arlo is a really cool hotel in right on the border of Soho, Hudson Square and Tribeca : it’s in a great area , the interior is stylish and the bar is amazing . What’s not to like?

Archer Boutique Hotel

Archer_Hotel_Boutique_Hotel_New_York_Bryant_Park_Boooking

4 Stars | The Archer Hotel is a boutique hotel right on Bryant Park – the perfect location! The rooms are truly stylish and from some of them you can even see the Empire State Building . What we also liked: the small bar on the roof of the hotel!

AC Hotel by Marriott New York Downtown

AC_Hotel_by_Marriott_New_York_Downtown_Hotels_Brooklyn_Bridge_New_York_Booking

4 Stars | The AC Hotel by Marriott New York Downtown is a hotel overlooking the stunning and iconic Brooklyn Bridge – from the Manhattan side. The location of the hotel is hard to beat , as it is also within easy reach of the 9/11 Memorial and One World Trade Center.

Ace Hotel New York

Ace_Hotel_New_York_Booking

4 stars | This charming boutique hotel has two stylish restaurants and a bar. The Herald Square underground station is in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Each of the spacious rooms is individually designed.

What makes boutique hotels in NYC so special?

Boutique hotels are known for their individual touch and unique experience. They offer exclusive accommodation with a high level of service and stand out with their exceptional design. The concept, which emerged in the 1980s in major cities such as the UK and the USA, aims to offer guests a cozy, almost familiar atmosphere.

Unlike large hotel chains, which often have hundreds of rooms, boutique hotels offer a more personalized service and a manageable size, allowing for an intimate and luxurious experience.

In addition, they provide access to bespoke information and services tailored to the unique setting, promoting unique experiences that you may not find in larger, standardized hotels.

A stay in a boutique hotel is therefore recommended for those who value unique ambience, personalized service and an experience that cannot be found in a standard hotel. They are ideal for travelers who want to avoid the crowds and instead experience the uniqueness of a place through the eyes of an accommodation that blends seamlessly with the local flair.

The 40 Best New York City Hotels By Forbes Travel Guide

January 5, 2024

travel and leisure boutique hotels nyc

Manhattan ‘s magic lies in the fact that a small island — only 13 miles long — can contain so many worlds that are, in some cases, but a brisk walk from each other. As you do your best to keep up with the borough’s pace, don’t be surprised if you need a break, ideally, one with a place to recharge (you and your cellphone), a plush bed and a stiff drink. Luckily, the area’s most luxurious hotels understand that while the city might never sleep, people certainly do.

Manhattan has mastered the art of the posh property. Where else do locals consider a hotel bar a destination? Visitors have their pick of the best, and we’re confident that somewhere in this illustrious list, you’ll find your perfect bite of the Big Apple.

You can trust our list. Forbes Travel Guide has been rating hotels since 1958 using an objective, independent and data-driven process. To find the best hotels in New York City, our incognito inspectors posed as ordinary guests and checked in at each property. The inspectors tested hundreds of exacting standards, with an emphasis on exceptional service, which accounts for 70 percent of a property’s rating. The remaining 30 percent comes from the quality and condition of the facilities.

Five-Star Hotels in New York City

Mandarin Oriental, New York

Every element at Mandarin Oriental, New York — from the ginkgo metal design finishes on the revolving doors to the framed kimonos hanging in the hallways to the Chinese gold throw pillows on the beds in the notably large rooms — reflects a sophisticated Asian aesthetic that recognizes the brand’s heritage while simultaneously capturing the individuality of New York.

The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel’s Columbus Circle location puts you steps from Central Park, Broadway theaters and top-notch museums. But if you need a break from the bustle, don’t miss the Five-Star spa . See more.

FAQs For Boutique Hotels in New York City

There are a lot of questions that come to mind while booking a boutique hotel some of the commonly asked questions are answered below.

Q.1 What is an independent small luxurious hotel called?

A modest boutique hotel. It shouldn’t have more than 100 rooms because each visitor needs to have a personalized experience. It is a stand-alone hotel or a unit of a chain of “only-boutique” hotels. It is situated in the city’s core or a highly fashionable location, typically the major retail district.

Q.2 Why do people stay in boutique hotels?

Benefits of boutique hotels

Boutique hotels may provide a customized experience since they don’t have to adhere to extensive corporate rules and regulations. Owners are free to update facilities or make interior changes as they see suitable. The best boutique hotels also know how to benefit from their surroundings.

Q.3 What hotel do the Kardashians stay at in NYC?

The Mercer Hotel

The Mercer has hosted several Kardashian-Jenner family events throughout the years. For evidence of paparazzi pictures, simply Google “Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott Mercer Hotel” or “Kanye and Kim Mercer Hotel.”

Q.4 What’s the difference between hotels and boutique hotels?

Chain vs. boutique hotels. To begin with, what exactly is a boutique hotel and how is it different from the typical hotel chain you are familiar with? A boutique hotel is a more intimate, luxurious, smaller hotel that provides individualized service, a distinctive personality, and an intimate setting.

Todos Santos Boutique Hotel Is a Luxury Oasis in One Of Mexico's Coolest Small Towns

The old inn is one of the most exquisite and sensitive renovations we've seen.

The bullet holes didn’t scare me. An unknown 19th-century outlaw had sprayed a constellation of them into the wall just inside the arched foyer of the Todos Santos Inn, located in the surfing and art oasis (and literal oasis) of the same name between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. This was six years ago, but the gunshots were much, much older, back when this handsome brick building served as a private hacienda. The imposing wood doors hadn’t stopped the perpetrator, but just inside the foyer, the black wrought-iron gate did.

The bullet holes didn’t scare me, but the Inn itself…

I first visited Todos in 2010 on a day trip from Cabo, wandered its main drag of galleries and cafes, and had a margarita — renowned as the region’s best — at the Inn’s elegant La Copa bar. The property then was radiant, warm, and dignified, and I knew I had to return with my wife to stay over. But when we came back together in 2018, it felt like it was on life support. The monastic rooms were dingy and cold. There were no other guests and, more unsettling, no overnight staff. When I woke early the following day, I found we’d been locked inside. I rattled and rumbled the barred metal gate until, half an hour later, a blasé employee showed up for work. We didn’t stay for breakfast.

The Inn closed and changed hands during the pandemic, reopening in January 2023 under the direction of the Batarse family, who own Gruppo Batta, one of Mexico’s largest retailers. “We came to town for a day trip but wound up staying later than we originally intended,” says Krischa Batarse, who owns a luxury lifestyle shop in San José del Cabo and ran point on design for the reopening. “We decided to stay the night at the Inn and woke up in the morning, enchanted by the lush vegetation, the architectural features, and the singing birds.” (No word on whether they were also locked inside.)

Now called the Todos Santos Boutique Hotel , it’s one of the most exquisite and sensitive renovations I’ve seen.

“From the moment we set foot on property, we were in love and knew that we could revitalize it and honor its history,” says Batarse, who accomplished that vision by restoring and preserving the original Spanish Colonial architecture and features of the historic hacienda, including the bullet-kissed mural inside the foyer (holes intact).

The hotel is home to 10 impeccable rooms, a new restaurant whose tiled open kitchen gleams like an emerald mine, and the expanded La Copa, all surrounding a chic sunken pool that feels part cenote, part Palm Springs. I floated through the warm water during the last hour of February daylight, the whole place to myself.

The town of Todos is just outside, but it’s understandable if you’d prefer to stay put. I could have holed up for a week in this villa like an exiled aristocrat, sustained on an IV drip of La Copa’s California cocktail, a botanical fizz of fino sherry, gin, soursoup, and hoja santa. The sense of privacy and unpretentious luxury the hotel, its owners, and its staff have cultivated are narcotic; it’s frankly shocking the Batarses have no hospitality experience. I stayed a few weeks after the grand opening, and the place ran smoothly as the $70 worth of Le Labo hinoki lotion I slathered myself with before bed.

Breakfast (included in the rate) is an a la carte menu at 1890, the main restaurant facing the pool. I had house-baked croissants, cappuccinos in a thick ceramic mug, and the sweetest pineapple before reluctantly packing up my things and checking out. The entrance gate swung open easily. Damn.

Todos Santos Boutique Hotel

  • Historic Baja missions lend the rooms their names (Francisco, Luis, etc.) and their focal art pieces: desert-hazy amber murals of the churches painted by local artist Nef Espino.
  • Chile-dusted dried strawberries, chocolate-covered cashews, and other jarred minibar snacks come from Agricole, the Pescadero farm and gourmet market in which the Batarses are partners.
  • The oasis-like pool — lined in tasseled khaki umbrellas and avocado-striped loungers — really understood the assignment.
  • The private-feeling hotel huddles two blocks back from Calle Benita Juárez, 10 seconds from everything but sheltered from the day-tripping lookie-loos wandering Todos Santos’s main drag.
  • To the lip balm in the hotel bath amenity spread: Where have you been all our lives?

The Rooms

Hope you’re here for the drama. The 10 rooms, which range from $995 to $1,295 per night, exude it with scarlet velvet, chocolate woodwork, brass fixtures, and lighting so soft and ambient it feels like twilight even in the middle of the hot, bright, desert day. Accommodations are split between the historical building, which encompasses four entry-level rooms and two master suites along the stunning original brick arcade, and the new-build casita across the pool, where you’ll find four “villas,” one of which (Santiago) features a private courtyard garden and plunge pool.

Food and Drink

A staircase from the lobby leads down to the patio of the main restaurant, 1890. It takes its name from the year the hotel’s main property was built, and many of the textbook continental dishes prepared by talented chef Gaz Herbert, an alum of London’s River Café, seem to come from the same era — oysters Rockefeller, Wagyu strip astride pommes puree — with Mediterranean crudo and pasta sprinkled on top like confetti. Todos is a causal tacos-and-avocado toast-type town, so this is a different and duly noted look, complemented by a robust wine list curated by Sinaloan sommelier Cesár Caro. The aesthetic is conquistador supper club: charcoal wainscoting, delicately patterned green wallpaper, oxblood marble tables framed in horseshoe banquettes, and studded leather chairs.

Upstairs, the old La Copa lounge has tripled in size with a grand floor-to-ceiling bar, wraparound mural, and gold-fringed lampshade chandeliers floating above the tables like parasols. Burgers, oysters, and other casual bites are available here, but the cocktails, both classic and original, make it feel like a proper gathering place instead of a bubble for hotel guests.

Activities and Amenities

The Todos Santos Boutique Hotel’s intimate footprint limits the amenities, so head to Cabo if you need a Peloton studio, hammam, or three pools. Here, it’s just the one pool — small by resort standards but large for a hotel whose max capacity is 20 guests, each of which has their own thick-cushioned lounge chair sheltered by oversized umbrellas. The concierge curates an extensive menu of activities, from horseback riding to whale shark diving in La Paz to mezcal tasting in Caro’s cellar, and guests who book three nights have a complimentary helicopter ride included.

There is no spa, but massages can be organized in-suite.

Family-Friendly Offerings

Though kids are welcome, the vibe here definitely skews adult.

Accessibility and Sustainability

Besides the innate sustainability of preserving the historical architecture, the connection between the food-and-beverage program and Agricole farm, situated 10 minutes down the road, is the largest driver of sustainability at the hotel. All the produce is organically grown, and Herbert is there harvesting most mornings. None of the rooms are ADA-compliant or wheelchair-accessible.

Todos Santos is a compact town, and all the boutiques, galleries, cafes, and restaurants are a quick walk from the hotel. To explore the pristine Pacific beaches nearby, you’ll want a car (or at least a bike), though a hotel beach club with shuttle service debuts soon.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

3 Hot List Hotels That Demand a Stay in 2024

By CNT Editors

Presented by Capital One

Every hotel winner on our 2024 Hot List makes its way there for a reason; these three properties serving are no exception. From brand-new properties The Fifth Avenue Hotel in the heart of Manhattan and the Eternal City’s 1, Place Vendôme to the just-reopened Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort on Hawaii’s Big Island, these are the new reliables where guests can make the most not just of the pristine properties but also the world of the destination around them. Here's how (and why) to spend a getaway at three of our 2024 Hot List winners, from Manhattan to Paris to Hawaii—plus what to pack for each.

The Portrait Bar at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York

The Portrait Bar at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York

The Fifth Avenue Hotel — New York City

The big hotel brands have long closed ranks in New York City along Central Park South, and most of them are great! But The Fifth Avenue Hotel, from its titular 5th Avenue address just above Madison Square Park and the world’s first Shake Shack (still a literal shack, albeit one with dreamy twinkly lights and ample outdoor seating) is a jewel box whose Mary Poppins-bag-style whimsy is made all the more impressive by its position amidst NoMad’s hustle and bustle. A five-story limestone-and-brick building with past lives first as part of a socialite’s estate and then as a bank, the hotel is storied despite its newness and fresh despite its long history. Designer Martin Brudnizki has payfully pulled at the Gilded Age, Renaissance palazzo roots with his jubilant palette and rich diversity of textures—wallpapers, rugs, and prints make an eye fat from feasting.

While a stay at The Fifth Avenue Hotel is ostensibly undertaken on some level to visit and see the Big Apple proper, stepping off the premises may prove unappealing once you’ve settled in. This is a whole world, one where the colors are richer and the people more thoughtful. After check-in, you’ll first meet your around-the-clock butler outside of your room where they await with a welcome drink and warm towel. Between 5 and 7 p.m., order a martini ritual to your room. Condescend to dine at onsite Cafe Carmellini, one of the best new restaurants in New York City. Flit out to nearby Gagosian and Fotografiska for a further art fix. It’s all that you need.

Beyond an extra suitcase to accommodate all the shopping you'll do nearby, pack whatever you feel most comfortable in—a neutral suit or little black dress to compliment the surroundings, or your most playful Rachel Comey to give the interiors a run for their money.

The exterior facade of the tony 1, Place Vendôme hotel in Paris's regally glamorous 1st arrondissement

1, Place Vendôme — Paris

Nestled above the 1st arrondissement’s Chopard boutique sits Paris’s new stealth-wealth gem of a hotel, the first from the Swiss fine jewelry maker owned by the Scheufele family. The watchmaking giant first bought the building, which dates back to 1723 (the roof and facades are protected historical monuments), a decade ago while it was still operating as another hotel, and subsequently embarked on a painstaking renovation and restoration project that birthed the beauty that exists today. With just 5 rooms and 10 suites, it’s a remarkably intimate affair. None looks like another, by the way—on one stay, you might lounge on the cobalt blue lounger of the modernist, Pop Art attic suite while the next sees you splayed out on the four-poster bed of double-height, quintessentially Parisian Appartement Chopard (the latter has its own hammam).

In the absence of an onsite restaurant, chef Boris Algarra slings his 24/7 menu (divided up between breakfast, day, and night) wherever the guest desires it—the library, the bedroom, you name it. And that’s saying nothing of the litany of fine dining found on the hotel’s doorstep—the neighborhood is the flâneur’s playground, with the Tulieres Gardens and prime shopping also a short jaunt away. Pack a good pair of walking shoes as Paris is, famously, best-walked from top to bottom with shopping bags weighing down either arm.

An aerial of a beach shore and hotel.

Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, is prized for its location and laid-back vibe

Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort — Hawai'i

The new iteration of Kona Village, now operated by the reliably resplendent Rosewood group, ticks the boxes of design, location, and service in a way that few resorts across the Hawaiian islands have brushed the ceilings of. Senior editor Rebecca Misner dubbed the property “the Platonic ideal of the ‘Hawaiian hotel’” in her review. With 150 hale, or bungalows, dotting the 81 acres of oceanfront land, it earns its name for functioning as a sort of communal haven. The favored onsite watering hole, Shipwreck, sits within the gutted schooner of the original owner. A coconut outside a guest’s bungalow door sends the same signal that a do-not-disturb sign would at a more traditional hideaway.

As a preeminent resort, Kona Village offers everything you could ever dream of within its property line—two bars, two restaurants, a spa built into the site’s lava flow, and a beach that feels so endless in large part because there’s not much else in the vicinity. But the adventurous would be wise to call up the concierge, who can arrange excursions to the town of Waimea, as well as day trips to see the waterfalls in the North and guided hikes through hidden craters. Be sure to bring along your swimsuit, sarong, and a pair of water shoes for those excursions.
