To learn more details about our testing process scroll down below our picks.
Best Subcompact Car
2022 hyundai accent.
- Miles Per Gallon: 33/41/36 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Seating: 5 seats
- Available Trims: SE, SEL, Limited
- Length: 172.6 inches
This stylish, budget-conscious four-door subcompact sedan is great for a young professional or couple in the city . It offers impressive fuel economy, class-leading warranty coverage at 10 years or 100,000 miles, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat for all trims.
As one would expect with a subcompact, you trade rear-seat and trunk space for a more agile size, but the Accent is still a quiet and comfy ride for passengers.
Lab Results: Our experts are fans of the contemporary, dignified exterior and simple interior. Since the Accent is so wallet-friendly, we say upgrade to at least the SEL package to unlock Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity on a larger 7" touchscreen.
Our fave feature: the optional hands-free smart trunk release that activates if you stand behind the car for three seconds with the key in proximity (e.g., purse, pocket, hand). C/D Senior Editor and judge Drew Dorian sums it up perfectly: “Whether it’s serving as someone’s first car or as a spare set of wheels to cart the kids around town, the Accent is a budget-friendly option that forgoes the overwrought styling that’s all too common with cheap small cars.”
2022 Hyundai Accent , from $16,645 (base price)
Best Entry Luxury Car
2022 cadillac ct4.
- Miles Per Gallon: 20/29/23 mpg (city/highway/combined as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: Luxury, Premium Luxury, Sport, CT4-V, CT4-V Blackwing
- Length: 187.2 inches
The entry-level Cadillac subcompact doesn't disappoint in its sleek styling and confident handling, making this sport vehicle ideal for those keen on luxury, but with a tighter budget. We're pleased that even the base Luxury model incorporates more standard driver assistance technology, including lane-keeping assist and automated emergency braking, as well as convenience features like wireless charging for your phone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and 12-way power-adjustable front seats.
Similar to other vehicles of this size, you sacrifice back-seat spaciousness and cargo space for its diminutive overall size. And we wish the interior materials matched the elevated exterior and driving experience.
Lab Results: In test drives, the CT4 was found to offer sporty acceleration and deft handling. With rear-wheel drive standard (all-wheel drive is available), it sets itself apart from rivals in the category.
Our pros were thrilled Cadillac's sophisticated Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, designed to allow hands-free driving on compatible highways, is now available starting on the Premium Luxury trim.
2022 Cadillac CT4 , from $33,695 (base price)
Best Compact Car
2022 honda civic.
- Miles Per Gallon: 31/40/35 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: LX, Sport, EX, Touring, Si
- Length: 183.3 inches
Honda's compact sedan got a major facelift for the 2022 model year, and its modern exterior and sleek interior make it optimal for those looking for a fun, reliable vehicle . Happily, the more upscale exterior and refined interior are met with the well-balanced handling expected from this popular vehicle, as it continues to deliver a balance of affordability, reliability and efficiency.
It’s hard to find fault with this sedan, though we do wish road noise was dampened and lumbar support was improved for the driver.
Lab Results: Our tech experts were pleased by the larger touchscreen infotainment system (standard 7”, available 9”) and improved driver safety technology features. Ample tech — including emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and rear-seat reminders — is standard. Controls are large and intuitive, making adjustments to entertainment and temperature easy.
In test drives, the compact car provided not only an engaging driving experience thanks to its spry handling, but a comfy and surprisingly spacious interior for the driver and passengers. Car seat installation was easy, and the setup allowed for versatile configurations. And for those needing more cargo space, you can opt for the hatchback variant.
2022 Honda Civic, from $27,300 (base price)
Best Luxury Compact Car
2022 genesis g70.
- Miles Per Gallon: 21/31/24 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: 2.0T, 3.3T and 3.3T Launch Edition
- Length: 184.4 inches
This sporty sedan is an ideal pick for someone looking for something decidedly luxurious yet still a great value . Taking an already attractive vehicle with an impressive build quality, the refreshed redesign for 2022 offers updated styling and improved infotainment offerings, including a 10.3” touchscreen and updated software.
Rear passengers will be a bit cramped with legroom and cargo space that is subpar for the segment, but the overall sentiment from all of our testing was luxury at a value price point.
Lab Results: Like other Genesis vehicles, an abundance of comfort and tech features is included standard, which gives Genesis an advantage over the competition. Our experts noted features that help mitigate collisions, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and emergency braking. Drivers and passengers can take comfort in the fact that it was selected as a Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), a rigorous safety recognition in the auto industry for crash tests and automatic braking.
Our pros found the ride to be enjoyable, with well-balanced, composed road-handling and sharp steering. The various modes let you determine more precisely the G70’s on-road demeanor, such as Comfort mode for daily driving and Sport/Sport+ for a more enthusiast ride. With strong powertrain options, all trims offered controlled, refined rides. You have a choice of a capable turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 engine for a more powerful punch at higher trims. While the manual transmission was discontinued, both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are still offered.
2022 Genesis G70 , from $37,525 (base price)
2022 Honda Accord
- Miles Per Gallon: 30/38/33 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: LX, Hybrid, Sport, Sport SE, EX-L, Touring
- Length: 196.1 inches
The 2022 Accord sedan is a practical and modern vehicle for a family looking for comfort and convenience but not willing to sacrifice a fun driving experience . A frequent winner in our Best New Family Car awards, the Accord continues to offer balanced and confident handling regardless of its powertrains.
An abundance of Honda Sensing features is standard as part of the base package, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. If you're looking for accurate steering, the Accord will deliver.
Lab Results: We've driven configurations with both the 192-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and the 242-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and found both capable of providing powerful acceleration and fuel efficiency. And then there's the even more efficient hybrid model that has likewise earned a spot on our best hybrid vehicles list . Beyond the responsive engine and transmission, the ride is quiet and comfortable for driver and passengers alike.
Our tech assessment turned up high marks for the infotainment system, notably the clean and simple layout, making it intuitive to access desired functions. This mid-size sedan offers ample, segment-leading cargo space (nearly 17 cubic feet) and a surprisingly spacious back seat.
2022 Honda Accord , from $25,470 (base price)
Best Luxury Sedan
2022 mercedes-benz e-class.
- Miles Per Gallon: 23/31(city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Seating: 5 seats sedan, four in coupe and cabriolet
- Available Trims: E350, E450 sedan, E450 coupe, E450 cabriolet
- Length: 194.3 inches
This luxury car delivers elegance befitting someone looking for a head-turning ride with a lavishly appointed interior . In a competitive segment, it stands out thanks to its combination of interior comfort, driving characteristics and performance capabilities.
The E-class is available in a wide range of powertrains and styles, meaning there's something for everyone. All deliver composed handling and smoothness over bumpy roads; the E350 has a turbocharged four-cylinder, and the E450 steps it up to a turbocharged six-cylinder. You can opt for a sedan, coupe or convertible.
Lab Results: The vehicle feels luxe as even the base model includes features usually reserved for higher trims such as a 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital gauge display. Interior ambient lighting is also standard — it offers extra style and can help reduce driver fatigue.
While none have notably large trunks, the convertible has the most diminutive cargo space with us being able to fit only two carry-on suitcases in tests. The E-class is more focused on passenger comfort: The vehicle itself provided next-level comfort with one tester exclaiming, "It's hands down the most comfortable seat I've experienced."
2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class , from $54,950 (base price)
Best Full-size Sedan
2022 nissan maxima.
- Miles Per Gallon: 20/30/24 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: SV, SR, Platinum
- Length: 192.8 inches
The full-size Maxima sedan is designed for a family with practicality and safety top of mind. With safety being paramount in a family-friendly vehicle, the Maxima delivers it in spades with the highest crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and best IIHS results. For parents with teenage drivers, the Maxima has monitoring tools including the ability to set speed and boundary restrictions, curfew alerts and the ability to track the vehicle.
Front-seat comfort and space for the driver and passengers is great, though you sacrifice some trunk space for it. The sleek exterior styling also results in less rear-seat passenger headspace than in other large four-door cars.
Lab Results: It offers ample power with its 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). We found the Maxima fun to drive and that it offered strong acceleration. It's a large sedan that's stylish and spacious and handles nicely considering its size.
In our assessments, we found the infotainment system to be intuitive, with an 8" touchscreen. Ultimately, you feel like you're getting a sporty and upscale package with a more accessible price point than luxury vehicles.
2022 Nissan Maxima , from $37,440 (base price)
Best Luxury Full-size Sedan
2022 mercedes-benz s-class.
- Miles Per Gallon: 21/30 (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: S500, S580
- Length: 208.2 inches
The full-size S-class sedan is a modern luxury vehicle designed for a family looking for equal parts comfort, high-tech offerings and capable on-road performance . Included standard are luxury features such as heated 12-way power front seats with massage. You definitely won't mind waiting in line for school pickup with those settings! Inside, the cabin is both comfortable and quiet.
Rear-seat passengers will likewise feel the comfort and lavishness of the vehicle, with even more headroom and legroom than the outgoing model and with available heating and massage features with power-adjustable recline. Also available are dual rear screens for entertainment purposes.
Lab Results: The unmistakable exterior aesthetic is modern and lavish, and the S-class’s interior showcases Mercedes-Benz’s refined craftsmanship and attention to detail. And that's not to discount the powerful engine options (429-hp turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder or 496-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter eight-cylinder) serving up impressive acceleration. The ride is relaxed yet stable, and a rear-wheel steering system affords exceptional maneuverability.
The sleek 12.8" OLED touchscreen stands out like a centerpiece, which through the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, offers intuitive control of the vehicle and multimedia content. Updates to the interface mean improved voice recognition and facial and fingerprint recognition options. There's also a 12.3" digital gauge display that can be personalized. It's also loaded with generous standard driver-assistance technology including forward-collision and lane-departure warnings, plus the ability to park itself!
2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class , from $111,100 (base price)
Best Subcompact SUV
2022 mazda cx-30.
- Miles Per Gallon: 24/31/26 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: Base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Turbo, Turbo Premium, Turbo Premium Plus
- Length: 173 inches
An excellent small SUV, the CX-30 is designed for a budget-conscious family with a sophisticated design sense looking for a compact, city-friendly vehicle . It received a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was designated an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.
Notably impressive for the price, the vehicle sported a lot of standard driver-assistance features including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. We were also pleased that the 2022 model year brings all-wheel drive as standard.
Lab Results: The base 186-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is perfectly adequate, though our advice is to opt for the 250-hp turbocharged version for more powerful acceleration. Handling is athletic and fluid with crisp steering.
Both the interior and exterior of the vehicle stood out in terms of design and finishes. One of our engineers noted, "The cleverly sculpted exterior gives the vehicle a sense of motion, even when it's still. So cool!" Layer that onto a vehicle that offered agile, yet balanced, handling, and you have a can't-go-wrong selection.
2022 Mazda CX-30 , from $22,200 (base price)
Best Luxury Subcompact SUV
2022 bmw x2.
- Miles Per Gallon: 24/32 (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: sDrive28i, xDrive28i, M35i
- Length: 172.2 inches
The X2 is a luxury subcompact for a family that principally cares about unique styling and a nimble ride . While it's classified as an SUV, it closely resembles a hatchback with its sloping roofline. The interior isn't top-of-the-line luxury, but it is handsome and outfitted with high-quality materials.
This driver-centric vehicle has easily accessible and responsive controls and a highly adjustable driver’s seat and steering-wheel placement. Thanks in part to its compact nature, the X2 delivers efficient fuel-economy ratings but skimps on rear headroom and cargo space.
Lab Results: The standard 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder is plenty strong, and the X2 generally offers agile handling. We found in our test drives that the eight-speed automatic transmission quickly shifted to the optimal gear. One tester noted: "I was impressed with just how fun the X2 was to drive, even on winding country roads."
While it's decidedly fun to drive, we noted a stiff ride, notably over rougher terrain. It is a great all-around vehicle that offers nimble handling and capable powertrains in a beautiful package.
2022 BMWX2 , from $36,600 (base price)
Best Compact Crossover/SUV
2022 mazda cx-5.
- Miles Per Gallon: 24/30/26 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: Base, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Turbo, Turbo Signature
- Length: 180.1 inches
A frequent GH winner, the compact CX-5 compact crossover is a mainstream vehicle that stands out from the crowd with its elegant exterior and well-appointed interior, suitable for a young professional couple or small family . It is an elegant vehicle that offers composed handling and adeptly handles bumps in the road.
The Mazda offers good looks and a good driving demeanor at an affordable sticker price. That said, due to its compact nature the rear-seat space is tight and cargo room isn’t as generous as other crossovers. The high-quality cabin and comfortable seating help compensate.
Lab Results: The CX-5 comes standard with a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, or you can choose the more powerful turbocharged engine. Regardless, the CX-5 offers balanced handling and good fuel economy. That said, the Car and Driver pros found the new Turbo trim provides greater acceleration that better complements the CX-5’s sporty handling.
Updates to the refreshed 2022 model include a retuned transmission, suspension improvements and all-wheel drive now standard on all models. While we've long loved the CX-5, these refinements equate to an even smoother and more responsive driving experience. “The CX-5 channels Mazda’s iconic Miata sports car with crisp handling that no other compact crossover can match, making it ideal for driving enthusiasts with a family,” explains Dorian.
2022 Mazda CX-5 , from $25,900(base price)
Best Luxury Compact Crossover
2022 volvo xc60.
- Miles Per Gallon: 26/23/30 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, Recharge, Recharge R-Design, Recharge Inscription, Recharge Polestar Engineered
- Length: 185.4 inches
The XC60 is a crossover aimed at hauling a family around in comfort and style . The XC lineup from Volvo basically means there is something for everyone, and this best-seller offers a compromise between the ultra-compact nature of XC40 and the spaciousness of the XC90. Within the XC60 family, there are three different powertrains offered, including a plug-in hybrid (for the Recharge and Polestar models): The B5 is the base, with a turbocharged 247-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; the upgraded B6 adds a supercharger, bumping horsepower to 295; and then the T8 plug-in ups it even higher.
The 2022 model has a restyled exterior. The changes are subtle but include an updated grille and front bumper. The XC60 offers fuel efficiency across all powertrains, with agile handling and a smooth ride. The elegant interior offers a quiet and comfy experience for the driver and all passengers and doesn't skimp on cargo space either. Loads of driver assistance tech is standard, including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.
Lab Results: Our creative team was notably impressed by the bold styling of the exterior, including the unique headlights and taillights. Besides great vehicle dynamics and refined craftsmanship, the infotainment system is a standout. You'll find front and center a large 9" vertical screen featuring a newly updated Google-based interface.
Those immersed in the Google Assistant ecosystem will find comfort with Google built in, standard on the 2022-model-year XC60. Even those new to this personal assistant will rejoice in the responsiveness from Google with chatting, making it easier to activate media, adjust the temperature controls, call a friend, start a playlist or initiate a destination in Google Maps, all hands-free. "Hey Google, where have you been hiding?!"
2022 Volvo XC60 , from $42,650 (base price)
Best Mid-size SUV
2022 ford bronco.
- Miles Per Gallon: not yet available
- Available Trims: Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, Wildtrak, Everglades
- Length: 172.7 inches
The 2022 two-row Ford Bronco keeps its appeal and off-roading capabilities, making it a rugged SUV suitable not only for family adventures but everyday excursions as well . Building on the nostalgic charm of the original Bronco from over five decades earlier, both the interior and exterior design, as well as its impressive all-terrain capabilities, are reminiscent of the OG version.
A 300-hp turbo 2.3-liter four-cylinder is standard and a 330-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine is optional, but both powertrains provide sufficient power and a responsive driving experience. An independent front suspension and precise steering provide the driver with confidence. While none of the Bronco’s models deliver particularly notable fuel efficiency, driver and passenger will enjoy a comfortable, albeit noisy, ride. Most driver-assistance features aren't included in the base package but are available with upgrades.
Lab Results: For family-minded practicality, we'd opt for the four-door hardtop variant, though you can also get two-door and soft-top versions. It adds a third middle seat in the back row, as well as more cargo space. The roof is removable, making it particularly fun for adventurers.
Even with the nostalgic vibe, the infotainment system is plenty modern, featuring Ford's Sync 4 software. It's simple and intuitive and easily integrates with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
2022 Ford Bronco , from $29,300 (base price)
Best Luxury Mid-size SUV
2022 genesis gv80.
- Miles Per Gallon: 21/25/23 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Seating: up to 7 seats
- Available Trims: 2.5T, 3.5T, 3.5T Advanced +
Fully loaded and quite elegant, this two-row SUV is well suited for design-forward, yet comfort-seeking, families. While Genesis is still a young brand, it continues to impress the Good Housekeeping and Car and Driver teams thanks to its audacious, progressive and convenient spin on aesthetically pleasing vehicles. There are so many standard convenience features, it's impossible to list them all. Genius tech includes adaptive cruise control and collision-avoidance and lane-keeping assist.
There's an optional third row that allows the GV80 to seat up to seven, but it's not the roomiest and is suitable only for young kids. Choose captain's chairs or bench seating for the second row.
Lab Results: In test drives, GH analysts were beyond impressed with this Genesis model's smooth, quiet ride — not to mention its surprising value and well-crafted interior. "It's the most comfortable thing I've driven all year!" gushed one tester.
Testers found this luxury SUV comfortable to drive, and it has an impressive warranty. One noted that she loved the unique camera for right turns, the slim and intuitive 14.5" touchscreen and the power liftgate.
2022 Genesis GV80 , from $50,200 (base price)
Best Full-Size SUV
2022 jeep grand cherokee l.
- Miles Per Gallon: 19/26/22 mpg (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, Summit Reserve
- Length: 189.8 inches
This well-known, long-running nameplate is best for a family that likes to adventure . New convenience and tech features have been added, including optional front and rear interactive displays.
Opt for the V-8 engine: Though it's a bit of a gas guzzler, it provides more power and refinement than the V-6 engine.
Lab Results: This rugged yet refined ride truly delights. "This Jeep is a practical family car that's anything but boring," said one tester. Our engineers were impressed by the three-row L model, which debuted for the 2021 model year and is the first Grand Cherokee that can seat up to seven.
We found the vehicle comfy and spacious for the driver as well as the front and back-seat passengers. And while you'll likely spend more time driving on suburban roads than off-roading, it's nice to know it's an adept off-road vehicle.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L , from $38,325 (base price)
Best Luxury Full-Size SUV
2022 bmw x7.
- Miles Per Gallon: 19/24 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Seating: Up to 7 seats
- Available Trims: xDrive40i, M50i, Alpina XB7
- Length: 203.3 inches
The largest available BMW delivers what you've come to expect from a BMW in the grandest form, designed for affluent families with multiple kids looking to make a statement . In the BMW lineup, this three-row provides the most seating, the most cargo room and the most generous interior dimensions for a BMW vehicle. And BMW doesn't sacrifice on quality, comfort and general refinement — even the third row is richly appointed with a sunroof, climate control, heated seats, USB-C chargers and more. Read: Kids don't have to fight over second- vs. third-row amenities!
The base 335-hp, turbocharged six-cylinder engine is plenty strong, though there's notable acceleration improvement with the M50i's twin-turbo 523-hp, 4.4-liter eight-cylinder and the top-of-the-line 612-hp V-8. And a host of standard features are included like collision warning and mitigation, as well as lane-departure warning.
Lab Results: In our tests we found it easy to put car seats in, both through the door and then into the easily accessible LATCH anchors. The multimedia offerings impressed us in terms of practicality, with a fully digital gauge cluster and large 12.3" central touchscreen display with an added rotary knob for convenience. Our biggest complaints are the limited third-row passenger space (still fine for kids) and limited cargo space behind the third row.
The base 335-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine is plenty powerful, though there's notable acceleration improvement with the M50i's twin-turbo 523-hp4.4-liter V-8 and the top-of-the-line 612-hp V-8. While not as sporty as its sedan counterparts, there was still a level of agility to the X7 that was impressive for its size, and it offers an overall smooth ride. Regardless of the powertrain, the X7 packs in an ultra-quiet, ultra-luxe, feature-laden cabin.
2022 BMW X7 , from $74,900 (base price)
Best Large SUV
2022 gmc yukon at4.
- Miles Per Gallon: 14/19 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Seating: up to 8 seats
- Available Trims: N/A
- Length: 210.0 inches
This large SUV is designed for a big family looking to haul all its people and their goods in a rugged, yet handsome package . The AT4, with a 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 base or more powerful 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 option available, offers a smooth ride experience thanks to its fully independent suspension, 20" all-terrain tires and higher ground clearance. It offers quick acceleration and impressive braking, especially for its size.
If spaciousness is paramount, this vehicle delivers, though you'll certainly sacrifice fuel economy to accomplish this. While we love the AT4 for its ruggedness and capable off-roading qualities, the Denali variant offers more luxury.
Lab Results: While we're specifically calling out the AT4 for its family-friendly toughness, the Yukon nameplate has a variety of engine options, all delivering a refined drive. There's no questioning why it's GMC's best-selling full-size SUV. No matter where you sit you'll be exceptionally pleased. One tester noted: "I'm shocked by how comfortable I am in the third row!"
Last year the Yukon was treated to a full redesign, and the updates for the 2022 model year continue to improve an already great vehicle. Among them is an overhauled Google-based infotainment system and 12" digital gauge cluster, both serious improvements to the multimedia experience. Also noteworthy is that on the AT4 the 15" head-up display is included, which we found helpful for keeping eyes on the road while still being able to gather key information.
2022 GMC Yukon AT4 , from $66,600 (base price)
Best Luxury Large SUV
2022 lincoln navigator.
- Miles Per Gallon: 17/23 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Seating: Up to 8 seats
- Available Trims: Standard, Reserve, Reserve L, Black Label, Black Label L
- Length: 210.0-221.9 inches (L in trim = longbase models)
The large luxury Lincoln Navigator SUV delivers an equally luxe interior as its exterior, designed for a cosmopolitan family seeking curb appeal . Its luxurious and spacious interior includes appointments such as leather upholstery, wood details, heated and cooled seats (with optional massagers!) for second-row passengers and ample seating (and USB ports!) even for third-row inhabitants. On the flip side, like with others in this class, the large size means maneuverability isn't as great, and the same for fuel efficiency.
Numerous enhancements outfit the 2022 model year, both on the exterior and interior. While the exterior updates are less notable, the interior updates significantly aid functionality. The upgraded Sync 4 infotainment software, accessible through a larger 13.2" display, provides an improved multimedia experience. ActiveGlide, Lincoln's hands-free semi-autonomous driving system, is now available, as are plenty of other standard and optional driver-safety technology.
Lab Results: The 440-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine with its smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission delivers a punch, so we don't mind that it's the only powertrain available. It's also notably quick, belying its size.
The Navigator is opulent yet tasteful, and given its enormous size it appears almost expertly tailored. While we're fans of much of the upgrades, our favorite addition for the 2022 model is the available Amazon Fire rear-seat entertainment system, where one passenger can stream The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel while the other basks in Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood .
2022 Lincoln Navigator , from $76, 710 (base price)
Best Electric
2022 ford mustang mach-e.
- Range: up to 315 miles EPA-estimated range
- Available Trims: Select, California Route 1, Premium, GT
- Length: 185.6 inches
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an ideal vehicle for a family looking for an accessible, full-featured crossover, with the bonus of it being a practical all-electric . The sleek exterior is matched with an equally handsome interior. We were fans of the large 15.5" center touchscreen, which features Ford’s next-gen SYNC 4A infotainment system and is super easy to use.
Much of the driver-assistance tech is available but not included standard. You may want to splurge for upgrades, as this car is eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit.
Lab Results: This zippy all-electric Ford SUV has zero tailpipe emissions — and it's a dream to drive. "Just be ready to turn heads when you're sitting behind the wheel," said one tester. "I got a thumbs-up from other drivers more times than I have fingers."
This athletic SUV offers impressive acceleration and handling, and drivers can take comfort in its lengthy range of up to 315 miles, per EPA estimate (dependent on battery). In our road tests, we found it to be responsive and agile with sporty handling.
2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E , from $43,895 (base price)
Best Hybrid
2022 honda insight.
- Miles Per Gallon: 55/49 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: EX and Touring
- Length: 183.6 inches
The 2022 Honda Insight delivers a modestly priced hybrid for those looking for a well-rounded, fuel-efficient vehicle . Even though the Insight is affordable, the interior doesn't feel dingy, and it offers a smooth ride. Honda Sensing, the brand's advanced driver-assist technology, is included standard with features like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. Our biggest quibble is the noisy engine, but for the price, we're willing to overlook that and just crank up the music.
Lab Results: We appreciate that the battery is under the rear seats, so the trunk is able to provide generous cargo space without obtrusion. If more space is needed, you can use the 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback to pass through large items.
Given its strong fuel economy, we weren't counting on such an enjoyable driving experience. The Insight’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor combo is quicker than we imagined, and both confident and responsive. In terms of multimedia displays, the Insight's was decidedly intuitive with well-labeled controls and responsive feedback.
2022 Honda Insight , from $25,760 (base price)
Best Minivan
2022 kia carnival.
- Available Trims: LX, LXS, EX, SX, SX-Prestige
- Length: 203.0 inches
It’s an everything hauler! Called a multipurpose vehicle (MPV), this new Kia is basically a cool, modern updated minivan, making it desirable to moms and dads looking for practicality but not willing to sacrifice aesthetic .
Parents and kids alike will enjoy sitting in the second-row captain’s chairs. We love the panoramic sunroof (standard with highest trim) for maximum pleasure.
It’s offered only as a front-wheel-drive vehicle, and for now, there is no hybrid model as there is for other minivans.
Lab Results: In test drives, we found it to be comfy and well appointed. It drove smoothly and offered a composed, refined ride for passengers and the driver. In tests, it fit 14 simulated carry-on suitcases with the seats up, and it has up to nine available USB charging ports.
“I’m into the boxier SUV look, but thrilled that it retains minivan benefits like ample cargo and passenger space,” said a tester. Dorian noted: “The Carnival proved its mettle in a recent long-distance road trip, where it proved to be a quiet, comfortable, and high-tech highway cruiser with ample cargo space for a family vacation.”
2022 Kia Carnival , from $32,300 (base price)
Best Station Wagon
2022 subaru outback wilderness.
- Miles Per Gallon: 26/33 mpg (city/highway) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Length: 191.3 inches
As the name would imply, the Outback Wilderness is a capable off-roading wagon great for an outdoorsy family looking for a stylish-yet-rugged vehicle for its go-anywhere adventures . It builds on the reliable capability of the core Outback line and is loaded with off-road extras like its lifted suspension that provides 9.5” of ground clearance, a more powerful and quick 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and all-terrain tires.
All-wheel drive is standard, which aids in more precise handling and responsiveness regardless of road and weather conditions. The vehicle can tow up to 3,500 pounds and the roof rack can handle up to 220 pounds (700 pounds when stationary, for say, a tent).
Lab Results: We were impressed to find that not only is the exterior extremely rugged, but inside you’ll find water-repellant upholstery. This is great not just for off-grid getaways but also for messy children or pets as it allows for an easy wipe-down.
What we ultimately saw in the Wilderness was an already exceptional vehicle upped to an even higher level. It affords a cushioned ride with strong standard driver-assistance tech including Subaru’s well-regarded EyeSight system.
2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness , from $26,945 (base price)
Best Luxury Wagon
2022 audi a6 allroad.
- Miles Per Gallon: 21/28/23 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: Premium Plus, Prestige
- Length: 194.9 inches
The Audi A6 Allroad is a premium mid-size vehicle that stands out for its practical, yet chic, wagon body style, aimed at the luxury market. In general, we’re fans of wagons as they provide much of the safety benefits of SUVs but with a lower center of gravity that usually affords the driver better handling and control. And that’s certainly true here.
There is a lot of standard equipment, including 20” wheels, a panoramic sunroof, hands-free tailgate and wireless Apple CarPlay integration; we wish a few other practical driver-assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control, were standard as well.
Lab Results: Where the Allroad really shines is with its interior. While the split-screen infotainment system takes some acclimating to, it’s easy to use once you do. The spaciousness and luxury appointments abound. Like other wagons it provides impressive cargo space, holding nine carry-on cases in its 30-cubic-foot cargo area, and 20 with the seats stowed away, according to C/D evaluations.
The Allroad provides punchy acceleration thanks to its powerful 335-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine. Coupled with a plush ride and composed handling, the wagon delivers a well-rounded experience with which it’s hard to find any major fault.
2022 Audi A6 Allroad , from $66,900 (base price)
Best Hatchback
2022 volkswagen golf gti.
- EPA Fuel Economy: Not yet available
- Available Trims: S, SE, Autobahn
- Length: 168.0 inches
The all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI is a fun and sporty hatchback designed for driving enthusiasts who also need a practical daily driver . The originator of the sporty hot-hatch segment is back with an updated GTI for 2022 that includes more cargo room, improved vehicle dynamics, an overhauled infotainment system with touch controls, and more robust driver-assistance systems.
Lab Results: The eight-generation Golf GTI simply delights. It offers sharp handling and quick acceleration whether it’s equipped with the six-speed manual or the seven-speed automatic transmission. We found the adaptive cruise control to be effective and reliable and appreciated how responsive and robust the voice commands were. That said, the new capacitive touch controls located on the steering wheel require some acclimation.
Hatchbacks are known for cargo space, and the GTI's is notably impressive. With its sleek design, it's our favorite new entrant in the category.
2022 VW Golf GTI , from $29,545 (base price)
Best Pickup Truck
2022 ford maverick.
- Miles Per Gallon: 37/42/33 (city/highway/combined) as per EPA Fuel Economy
- Available Trims: XL, XLT, Lariat
- Length: 199.7 inches
The all-new 2022 Ford Maverick is a great compact truck, versatile enough to meet the demands of a busy family in an urban setting. While some may remember that the original Maverick was a compact car back in the 1970s, the new version is a small pickup that feels spacious and solid. The Maverick might be mini by pickup-truck standards, but its capabilities are not: It offers a 1,500-pound payload capacity regardless of engine and towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds for the hybrid or 4,000 pounds with the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
It’s built on the same chassis as the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs, but it sits low, and taller drivers and passengers will have to duck to get in. The Maverick offers a capable and relatively comfortable ride for front-row occupants at a bargain entry price. That said, you'll have to pay up for more robust features, including more convenience and safety tech options.
Lab Results: Like others in the class, this mini-truck offers a firm, controlled ride. While a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain is standard, those looking for more power can opt for the upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. No matter the powertrain, you get a great blend of affordability and versatility in this utility vehicle.
Clever storage solutions can be found throughout the Maverick, and the back-seat cushions can flip up to reveal more cubbies. The bed is the prize here, though, larger than other comparable vehicles and cleverly appointed with integrated features such as an adjustable cable for tying things down and cutouts to allow for segmented storage.
2022 Ford Maverick , from $19,995 (base price)
How we tested
Since our Best New Family Cars of 2021 was announced, we have been busy evaluating all of the new entrants to the market. Driving nearly 10,000 miles over the course of the year on sprawling highways, winding roads and unpredictable city blocks, we're confident that we're serving up great-performing vehicles that will make car time more enjoyable. Among all the test drives, over 150 car seats were installed and uninstalled, iPhones and Android devices were paired with dozens of infotainment systems and all voice-recognition software were assessed.
✔️ Core performance : Ultimately, the vehicles that are featured scored high enough across our checklist of criteria. Like all products vetted by the Good Housekeeping Institute, safety and core performance is a baseline. Our performance metrics include ratings of smoothness and reaction time of transmissions under varied loads and through a variety of maneuvers such as intermittent passing or mid-speed turns. We take into account the powertrain, which is every component that helps the vehicle move, including the engine and transmission, as well as the driveshaft, axles and differential. We want responsive transmissions that are able to select the appropriate gear. When it comes to handling and maneuverability, we are looking for vehicles that are particularly nimble. We assess how well a vehicle can absorb bumps and potholes in the road without adding obtrusive noise. We even check the parking and turning radius to ensure it is easy to park the vehicle in a tight space.
✔️ Comfort and convenience: Here, we are looking for vehicles that are easy to get in and out of, cup holders and console controls that are positioned and laid out well and easily within reach for the driver, and comfortable seats for front- and rear-seat passengers. As noted, we install car seats in various positions to see how accessible LATCH anchor points are and overall space requirements and possible configurations for setup. In terms of storage, we look at the size and usability of the rear trunk space, factoring in things like storage nets and cargo-area intrusions. We also evaluate the interior storage layout, considering things like the thoughtfulness of the storage options throughout the car, including overhead bins, center consoles, door pockets, map pockets and more.
✔️ Infotainment and controls: We evaluate the infotainment displays, looking for media displays with clarity that are well sized and oriented in a position that will not distract the driver. We likewise look at the primary displays, looking for fonts that are easy to read at a glance. The layout of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) is also evaluated for its placement, simplicity and isolation from other controls that could otherwise confuse its function. The same goes for the steering-wheel controls used for audio, media, voice and phone commands, cruise control, etc. to ensure they are intuitive, responsive and ergonomic. Finally, exterior controls like those for the windshield wipers, lights, and cruise control are reviewed in terms of their uselessness and responsiveness.
✔️ Car and Driver testing metrics: Car and Driver has track-tested all of these cars, measuring everything from acceleration and braking to road noise and rear-seat comfort. We use their comprehensive test data and extensive on-road and track evaluations to help us arrive at our top new cars, SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks. Chief Brand Officer Eddie Alterman says, "If a carmaker makes it, Car and Driver has tested it. We perform deep dives on more than 400 new cars a year, measuring everything from the size of the engine to the size of the cupholders."
✔️ Practical features: We also take note of added practicality or just pure fun elements a car may offer, because while the latest vehicles on the market are incorporating new safety and tech features, they are also layering in aesthetic and convenience options that are particularly important if you have a family. Think: a convenient hidden spot to store your bag, lots (and lots!) of charging ports for all of your gadgets and extra little details to show off your personal aesthetic.
Car buyer's advice
Regardless of what vehicle you settle on, keep in mind the following tips to help you get started:
- Test-drive for a full day. Push the dealer for the longest possible test drive. Many will allow you to keep the vehicle overnight if you ask. This is helpful as it allows you to check out the headlights after dark and to see how the car fits into your garage.
- Consider the trim. Powertrains and options may vary, potentially greatly impacting not just the feel but sticker price of your vehicle. Make sure you compare side by side, so there are no surprises after the car is yours.
- Sit in each of the seats. See how easy it is to get in and out of the driver's seat, passenger seat, and the second and third row of seats as applicable. Always take the time to install your own car seat or booster seats if you have young kids who need them.

10 Best Road-Trip Vehicles That You Can Buy Right Now
CR's tests show that these are the best road-trip models across popular categories
Finding the perfect road-trip vehicle means striking a balance among many factors, such as front and rear seat comfort, space, fuel economy, ride quality, and noise. It also should be a vehicle that’s easy to live with when you’re not traveling, and with strong safety and reliability. That is a lot to ask of a single vehicle, but our analysts have scrutinized our test and survey data to find the best road-trip vehicles in 10 popular categories.
To find the standouts, we considered all those factors among models that meet the stringent criteria to be recommended by Consumer Reports . Each vehicle below scores at least average in those factors, plus they provide 500 miles or more of highway cruising range, based on our fuel-economy tests. They also have a sizable trunk or cargo area, based on our measurements. Because of the qualification needed to make a great long-distance runner, we omitted subcompact SUVs and small cars. We also list suitable alternatives, where possible.
All the vehicles featured here, except the Buick, come standard with forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection. (The advanced safety systems are optional on the Buick.)
The 10 models below are road-trip warriors, based on CR data. You can assemble your own list with CR ratings by using our A-to-Z guide . If you’re a Consumer Reports member, the full list is available to you here.

Family Room
Many things go into making a vehicle family-friendly, but roominess is at the top of the list. Without enough second-row legroom, your rear-seat passengers will feel cramped and constrained.
We can help you find a family car with rear seats that are spacious enough to transport tall in-laws and lanky teens comfortably. We’ve compiled a slideshow of vehicles with outstanding second-row legroom. The preferred mode of family transportation varies from one driver to the next, so we’ve presented a mix that includes cars, SUVs and minivans.
Also, cabin quality matters, so every vehicle in our slideshow has a U.S. News interior score of 8.0 or higher. Based on each vehicle's second-row legroom, we’ve presented our picks in ascending order. If there’s a tie, the vehicle with the higher interior score gets the higher position.
We frequently update scores in our reviews as new insights and information come in. For that reason, the scores in this slideshow may differ from those shown elsewhere on our site.

Three-row midsize SUVs are ideally sized for many drivers seeking family transportation. The Hyundai Palisade is one of the segment’s top picks, and it's a winner in our 2023 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money awards.
The Palisade treats passengers to a premium cabin that seats up to eight people. The seats are well-padded, and the first two rows have much room for stretching out. The third row is tighter but offers enough space for adults on shorter trips.
Standard features include navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Wi-Fi hot spot. The Palisade is available with heated and ventilated front and second-row seats, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, wireless device charging and an in-car intercom.

The Kia Telluride holds the top spot in our midsize SUV rankings. This three-row SUV seats up to eight people and has one of the most upscale interiors in its class. The cabin materials are high-quality all throughout, and the top trim provides plush upgrades like Nappa leather upholstery.
This Kia’s second-row passengers enjoy supportive seats with superb visibility and excellent head- and legroom. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot and dual-zone automatic climate control. Available features include heated and ventilated front and second-row seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 110-volt household-style power outlet and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

2023 Jeep Wagoneer
Second-row legroom: 42.7 inches | u.s. news interior score: 9.1/10.
The Jeep Wagoneer is at the very top of our large SUV rankings. This three-row hauler accommodates up to eight people in nicely padded seats. Head- and legroom are abundant in the first two rows, and adults fit comfortably in the third row of seats. The cabin has premium materials and stellar build quality.
With a tow rating of up to 10,000 pounds, this Jeep pulls more than any other large SUV, so it’s excellent for family trips that involve a trailer. The cargo capacity is exceptional, with the extended-wheelbase version (Wagoneer L) providing up to 130.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

What is the Best Vehicle for a Road Trip?
Kristin Shaw
When you’re taking a road trip, which vehicle works best for your family? One that offers plenty of room to stretch out? Luxury interiors? Amenities like built-in generators, coolers and vacuum cleaners to clean up the Cheerios explosion in the back seat? Depending on the size of your family and your priorities, you may choose a four-door sedan, wagon, crossover, SUV, minivan or even a pickup truck can be the best vehicle for a road trip. Here, we work through all of those options to help you find the best family road trip vehicle for you.
Is a Nissan GT-R sports car road-trip capable? Absolutely, if there are only two of you and you don’t need to carry a lot of luggage. In fact, I took one on a 3-and-a-half hour ride across Texas a few weeks ago. Was it practical? No. Thrilling? Yes.
Most of us, though, need enough room to bring the whole family. While you can’t please everyone, there are vehicles on the market that come pretty darn close.
Here’s a review of family vehicles currently on the market, with a focus on: legroom, headroom, tech features, fuel economy and safety aids like blind-spot monitoring and camera views. Many of these vehicles offer adaptive cruise control, which reduces fatigue on the highway.
Whether you need an adventuring all-wheel-drive SUV, a luxury crossover or a brawny truck to haul your ATVs, camper or boat, there’s an option for you.

Mid-Size Three-Row Options for Larger Families
Kia telluride.
Kia’s newest midsize SUV took the industry by storm, earning positive reviews across the board for this three-row family star. The 2021 and 2022 models are virtually identical. They offer a robust V6 engine and seating for eight. Plus standard safety features you’ll appreciate like adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.
You’ll also get six USB ports to keep your electronics-loving passengers happy, smartphone integration and an eight-inch touchscreen — all critical components for a great family road trip vehicle. Upgrade from the base model to the S trim to get captain’s chairs in the middle row and a sunroof.
Base Price: $34,120.
Hyundai Palisade
The Palisade launched in 2020, and Hyundai hit a home run with this three-row SUV. At a base price of $34,385 for 2021 models, it’s a steal that includes European styling and a list of driver-assist aids. Gas mileage is a decent 21 miles per gallon on regular fuel, which is helpful.
On family road trips , you’ll appreciate the Rear Seat Quiet Mode feature, which mutes the speakers in the second and third rows. That gives you a chance to listen to your music or podcast while you’re driving up front and the kids can happily listen to their own music on their headphones. And here’s a benefit that comes with any Hyundai or Kia vehicle: 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and five-year/unlimited mileage roadside assistance.
Base Price: $34,385
Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit
SheBuysTravel founder Kim Orlando had the opportunity to test out the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. Here’s what she had to say:
Say cheese because the seven-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is loaded with cameras. Parents will appreciate the FAM CAM that gives the driver a birds-eye view of everyone in the vehicle. If there is nit-picking going on in the backseat, you’ll be able to see who started it. It’s also helpful to keep an eye on rear-facing younger children. However, teens might not be as fond of this feature.
The Night Vision Camera was fun to play with and a first for me. Infrared sensors detect animals or people up to 200 yards away, making it easier to avoid deer or other wildlife that wander onto roads. But after a few minutes, I found it distracting and turned it off to better focus on the road ahead.
The 360 back up camera shows all angles of the Jeep, which I found very helpful when pulling out of tight parking spots. It’s also useful when having to parallel park such a large vehicle.
Riding in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is a pleasure. The spacious interior of my tester vehicle was gorgeous, with quilted leather on the doors and dash, a wide console for storage and the perfect height to rest an elbow. There’s no skimping on charging ports and legroom- even in the third row. My 24-year-old, music-loving daughter commented on the amazing sound system. A family of 5 could comfortably road-trip for 12+ hours in this vehicle.
Base Price: $58,300
Volvo XC90
When you think of Volvo, safety probably comes to mind because that’s a cornerstone of the brand’s messaging. Volvo takes family and safety very seriously, including standard features like adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert (which is so important when watching out for pedestrians, cars and cyclists behind you), and forward collision mitigation. Plus the structure of the vehicle itself is designed for maximum protection in case of a crash.
Even the base model includes wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All three rows feel luxurious on a long or short trip.
Base Price: $56,545
Chrysler Pacifica
Minivans are designed for comfort and convenience, and Chrysler gets it right with the Pacifica, a perennial favorite. Available in gas-only, hybrid and all-wheel-drive versions, this van is as comfortable as a recliner on wheels for long drives.
The base price on the 2021 Pacifica includes such niceties as remote engine start; a power liftgate; and second-row seats that stow right into the floor or, when the seats are up, act as storage bins.
With the gas-powered version, you’ll get about 22 miles per gallon, and with the hybrid you can go up to 33 miles on the battery alone. At the top of the line, the Limited trim includes wireless headphones and a second-row theater with built-in screens and streaming capabilities.
SheBuysTravel Tip: If you choose the hybrid version, the second-row seats can’t fold into the floor because that’s where the battery sits.
Base Price: $37,830
Chevrolet Traverse
This three-row SUV from Chevy checks all the boxes: lots of legroom, smart tech like onboard Wi-Fi and a robust drivetrain.
The base price is very affordable, but I highly recommend the High Country trim at the top of the line. Yes, it’s more expensive at closer to $55,000, but it has all the bells and whistles plus some: sunroof, adaptive cruise control and a towing hitch with the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds. It’s tempting to plan a long road trip and enjoy the ride.
Base Price: $30,995
Honda Odyssey
Honda also makes a stellar minivan that will last nearly forever; my sister owns two of them. The Odyssey is extremely comfortable and a great value. I particularly like the deep cargo wells behind the third row, perfect for stowing beach gear or even extra diapers and wipes for a long vacation.
Even in the base model, you’ll get important driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control, along with a standard rear-seat reminder alert that tells you if you left anything or anyone in the car when you park.
Opting for the Touring model adds about $10,000 to the total. But that includes a rear-seat entertainment system and Blu-Ray player as well. PLUS a cabin monitoring system so you can check and see if the little one is sleeping yet. And with 144.9 cubic feet of cargo space, you have plenty of room!
Base Price: $33,265
Nissan Pathfinder
For 2022, the Nissan Pathfinder is all new. It has a stunning array of amenities in a three-row, seven-or-eight passenger SUV. Wider and larger, with 80.4 cubic feet of storage available with the second and third-row seats folded, the new Pathfinder is worth waiting for. It’s powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, creating 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. That’s a lot of get-up-and-go.
The new Pathfinder has 16 cupholders, which is a whole lot of beverage holding and likely will mean a whole lot of potty stops on a road trip in this family vehicle! It even has a bin in the back that can act as a cooler with a drain plug, which is awesome for camping and tailgating.
Base Price: $33,000 (estimated)
Toyota Highlander
My family drove a Toyota Highlander from Austin, Texas, to Ft. Myers, Florida, over Christmas break. We loved the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa smartphone integration as well as the onboard Wi-Fi hotspot and standard Toyota Safety Sense drivers’ aids.
You can buy a Highlander in six different trims. In terms of fuel economy, an AWD Highlander will net 23 miles per gallon and the hybrid a fuel-sipping 36 miles per gallon combined.
Base Price: $37,022
Mazda CX-9
An unsung hero of the 3-row set is the 2021 Mazda CX-9, which looks and feels more like a wagon than an SUV in the best ways. The base model gives you a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, heated front seats and tri-zone climate control so all three rows can be comfortable. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring are also standard.
Go for the whole package with the Signature trim, which offers up cushy leather quilted seats, all-wheel drive and second-row captain’s chairs, making it even roomier and more luxurious.
Base Price: $35,610
If you could take an RV and distill it down to a large SUV, the Yukon would be it. The newest Yukon is spectacular inside, with a console in the front that moves several inches back. It can be locked to secure your items while you’re away from your SUV. Big, brawny and long (especially in the XL version), this family road trip vehicle is like driving a living room around.
Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, forward collision mitigation and front-wheel drive. But there are a plethora of options including all-wheel drive, an upgraded towing package, rear entertainment system and a ton more.
Base Price: $55,120
2021 Dodge Durango SRT
I pulled up to the home of the owner of a 33-foot trailer that I was renting for the weekend in a Dodge Durango SRT and he looked at me skeptically. “You’re going to tow with that Durango?” he said. What he didn’t know was that the Durango SRT has a killer towing capacity of 8,700 pounds. I had no problem towing that trailer .
The four of us took it to a campground in northern Michigan and it was incredibly capable. Now, you should know that it’s loud: it has a take-no-prisoners 6.4-liter V8 that roars. Or you could step it up to the SRT Hellcat with a supercharged V8 that makes 710 horsepower. This is the SUV you want for sheer power and driving fun.
Base Price: $31,995
Two-Row SUVs: When Less is More
Honda passport.
You can’t go wrong with a Honda for a comfortable vehicle for a road trip. Its five-passenger Passport starts at $33,765 for the 2021 model, and slides up several thousand more for the top Elite trim.
Personally, I think the EX-L version, which is closer to $40,000, adds a ton of options for excellent value: heated leather seats, a sunroof, rear USB ports and a power liftgate to make it easy to pack and unpack.
Base Price: $33,765
Lexus RX 450h
I drove my parents out to west Texas in a Lexus RX 450h and they can’t stop raving about it. It’s absolutely a pleasure to drive, with standard all-wheel drive and a 308-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 hybrid powertrain. A premium Mark Levinson audio system is included in the base model, and a crisp eight-inch touchscreen enhances the infotainment system.
This two-row SUV gets a fuel-sipping 30 miles to the gallon, allowing you to go farther without having to stop. As parents, we have to stop often enough with meal and bathroom breaks. Are we there yet?
Base Price: $57,980
Infiniti QX55
Infiniti’s newest crossover has nice, big spaces that hold beverages and water bottles. That’s just the start of the list of amenities this luxury vehicle offers. It sports a go-getter turbo four-cylinder engine that is effortless to drive; 25 mpg combined is pretty darn good for an SUV this size.
You and the kids will love the onboard Wi-Fi that supports up to seven devices and wireless Apple CarPlay. The hatchback opening is streamlined and sharply angled but doesn’t sacrifice headroom in the back so your teens won’t feel squished.
Base Price: $46,500
Buick Envision
Redesigned in 2021, the Buick Envision is better than ever. The 2021 Envision comes with a turbocharged 230-horsepower engine and an elegant interior with thoughtful touches and a very quiet cabin.
Your kids may be loud but at least your SUV can be quiet, right? This SUV is nicely equipped right out of the gate with a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless charging and an eight-inch touchscreen, plus the audio controls are behind the steering wheel for convenient access.
Base Price: $34,830
BMW X5 xDrive45e
This hybrid SUV makes you feel like a million bucks but starts at $75,995. I didn’t realize how much I liked this vehicle until I had a chance to borrow one for a week and drove it all over Texas.
With a 3.0-liter turbo inline 6-cylinder with an integrated electric motor and intelligent all-wheel drive, the X5 xDrive45e (so much alphabet soup!) generates 389 horsepower and has an estimated range of 400 miles. That’s pretty incredible for a luxury vehicle.
It has great touches like convenient fast-charging ports in front of the second row and a super sleek digital interface. Doesn’t hurt that it has a 205-watt, 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, either. Wow.
Base Price: $75,995
Mercedes-Benz GLE 450
There’s no doubt that Mercedes-Benz makes luxurious vehicles, and the GLE 450 is no exception. Included in this SUV is a peppy turbocharged six-cylinder engine, ambient lighting, wireless device charging, sunroof, and a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen.
Your passengers won’t have anything to complain about because they’ll be enjoying the plush ride so much. This gorgeous ride was made for resort living.
Base Price: $76,000
Road Trip Vehicles for the Off-Road Adventuring Family
Jeep gladiator.
The Gladiator is everything its name suggests: strong, powerful and conquering. In the case of the Jeep Gladiator, you get all the agile fun of a top-off Jeep but with the additional benefit of a truck bed to carry along everything from luggage to camping supplies to mountain bikes.
The Jeep Gladiator is the only convertible pickup on the market, currently, and you and the kids will love peeling back the top to reveal the sun and feel the wind in your hair. Jeep is known for its off-road prowess and in Gladiator form, it doesn’t disappoint.
Base Price: $40,335
Land Rover Defender
Starting at $47,450, you and your family could drive one of the newest versions of a legendary off-roading vehicle in the Land Rover Defender. For 2021, the Defender comes in two-door and four-door versions, and you can even opt for a third row with two additional jump seats.
If you wanted to go on safari or even just off the trail to commune with nature, the Defender can definitely get you there.
Base Price: $47,450
Subaru Outback
What is amazing about the Subaru Outback is that it looks unassuming. But it is incredibly capable for any adventure you want to take.
It climbs like a mountain goat if your family likes to hit the mountains for some rest and relaxation, and it’s just as comfortable on the road with a continuously variable transmission that clocks 29 miles per gallon. And the hatchback design and wagon shape make it a simple to load it up. Plus roof racks add even more storage capability.
Base Price: $28,351
Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Say what? Is this a typo? Nope, believe it or not Rolls-Royce has an SUV and it has not only the class and elegance we know to expect from the brand, it’s unbelievably capable off-road.
Ask me how I know: I took the Cullinan on a series of off-road obstacles last fall in Texas. But even more convincingly, a friend of mine piloted a Cullinan at the Rebelle Rally, a several-day trek across sand, hills and dirt. And she won.
Base Price: $400,000. What did you expect? It’s a Rolls-Royce.
Trucking in Style
Chevy silverado high country.
Here’s what Kim Orlando has to say about the pick up that she drove around southern California when her son got married this summer:
The Silverado High Country is a luxurious family car disguised as a workhorse truck. The Silverado and I hauled furniture, maneuvered around Downtown Los Angeles, mini-road tripped between Costa Mesa and Culver City to see my kids, caught some great sunsets and attended my son’s wedding.
The wood panels and leather trim in the enormous cab are gorgeous. My expectation for all pick-up trucks is that they will drive smoothly and the infotainment will be easy to use. The Silverado did not disappoint.
What I didn’t expect was decent gas mileage (20-22mpg on average), superior technology and that I would feel comfortable riding in it in my formal gown on my son’s wedding day.
The huge console in the front holds a medium-sized purse and I used the wireless phone pad so much that I started to leave my chargers at home. Anyone riding in the backseat – big or small – will be comfortable on a long road trip.
We tested the Super Cruise hands-free driving feature on the 405 California highway, but chickened out after a few minutes. While it works great, I did not feel comfortable trusting it in LA traffic. My 26-year-old son loves the Super Cruise – even in LA traffic.
I have to admit that I needed the 360 camera for parking. The truck is large and the side mirrors make it feel even bigger. The cameras made my life so much easier.
My favorite feature of the truck: the retractable running boards, especially in a long dress and heels! Getting in and out of the truck was easy for me and my 75-year-old mom.
I’m also a big fan of the step tailgate. My 2000 Silverado pick up does not have one, but I am adding it to my “can’t live without” list. The integrated step ladder is a game changer. I used it to sit and enjoy the view and for easy access to load luggage and furniture. It was simple for me to open but a bit too heavy for my 8-year-old cousin to operate.
Overall, my family ages 8-78, enjoyed the comforts and utility of the Chevy Silverado HIgh Country. I recommend at least a test drive and don’t forget to try the Super Cruise feature (stick with it longer than our 3 minutes to get the real effect)!
The price for the model I drove is around $72,000. There isn’t a feature I would leave out.
Base price: $59,000
When Ram launched its updated 1500 pickup, families went crazy for it. Ram added a giant touchscreen that controls everything. And it has smart toggle switches behind the steering wheel to quickly change the channel from KidsBop to the 90s station. This is a truck that feels like a plush sedan inside. While it’s certainly big, it drives like a dream.
The Ram 1500 starts at $36,340 for a very basic model. I’d recommend the Laramie trim or higher, which is closer to the $60,000 and up range. If you’re looking to tow a big trailer or boat, the Ram 1500 can handle up to 12,750 pounds with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine.
Base Price: $36,340
2021 GMC Sierra Denali
One of the features I love about the GMC Sierra in the top-of-the-heap Denali trim is the incredible number of available camera angles. It’s easy for you to see where you’re going and what your boat or trailer is doing behind you, and that gives you peace of mind when you’re towing. The Sierra Denali pickup includes handsome side steps that make it an effortless endeavor for the whole family to get in and out.
On top of all of the heavy-duty utility stuff, the Sierra Denali has wireless phone charging, heated second-row seats and USB ports within reach for tablets and gaming systems to stay full of juice on long trips. The Sierra Denali is very similar to its corporate cousin, the Chevrolet Silverado.
Base Price: $55,600
2021 Ford F-150
There’s a reason Ford’s seminal pickup has been the #1-selling truck for many years. The 2021 model makes a great vehicle for a road trip with kids. It’s got a ton of amenities for families who want to travel in comfort and with plenty of space. Load up the back of the F-150 and slide all of your luggage under a locking tonneau cover to keep it safe and you can go just about anywhere.
What’s really cool about the 2021 version of the F-150 is that you can get an onboard generator that works out of the back. The generator can charge up an astonishing number of appliances (even a TV!) for the best camping and tailgating adventures ever.
Base Price: $28,940
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What size vehicle should I choose for a family road trip?
A: The size of your vehicle will depend on the size of your family and how much luggage you will be bringing. A four-door sedan or wagon may work for a smaller family, while a larger family may need a minivan or SUV.
Q: What amenities should I look for in a road trip vehicle?
A: Some helpful amenities for a road trip vehicle include built-in coolers, entertainment systems, and comfortable seating. Consider what features are important to you and your family when choosing a vehicle.
Q: Should I rent or buy a vehicle for a road trip?

Q: How do I prepare my vehicle for a road trip?
A: Before hitting the road, make sure your vehicle is in good condition by performing a thorough inspection. This may include checking the oil, tire pressure, and brakes. It’s also a good idea to pack an emergency kit with items like a spare tire, jumper cables, and a first aid kit.
Q: What are some tips for staying comfortable on a long road trip?
A: To stay comfortable during a long road trip, make sure to pack plenty of snacks, drinks, and entertainment options. Take frequent breaks to stretch your legs and stay hydrated. And consider investing in a comfortable neck pillow or seat cushion to make the ride more enjoyable.

10 Best Cars for Road-Tripping on a Budget
By Jane Ulitskaya
Memorial Day kickstarts the summer travel season, and despite record-high gas prices , drivers aren’t willing to sacrifice their annual road trips. According to a Cars.com survey , 82% of Americans traveling over the holiday are planning to drive. But rising fuel prices aren’t the only hurdle for shoppers in the market for a vehicle to accommodate their summer travel plans — higher average prices at the dealership can be just as problematic.
Related: What’s the Best New-Car Deal for May 2022?
The median price of a new vehicle among Cars.com dealers was $39,083 in April, up from $36,370 one year prior. At the same time, the typical manufacturer incentives offered over Memorial Day weekend are significantly scaled back due to inventory constraints. According to a J.D. Power sales report , incentives on new cars shrunk to $1,034 in April — down 66% from April 2021.
Despite these challenges, shoppers looking for an affordable road-trip vehicle that minimizes sticker shock at the pump still have options. We compiled the most affordable and fuel-efficient or fuel-free model-year 2022 cars, SUVs, trucks and electric vehicles for summer adventures (and beyond). To make our list, each vehicle’s starting price is in the top 10 most affordable category for its class. Also, gas-powered options get an EPA-rated combined rating of 30 mpg or more and EVs must get at least 200 miles of EPA-estimated range.
Sedans and hatchbacks make excellent road-trip vehicles for small families and light packers. They are also among the most affordable options on the market and offer generous efficiency even without a hybrid or electric powertrain.
Chevrolet Spark
Topping the list of budget-friendly road-trip vehicles is the most affordable car on the market. Shoppers interested in the Spark need to act fast, however, since GM plans to end the hatchback’s production in August, according to Automotive News . While it may not be long for this world, traveling long distances in the Spark comes with one big perk: a 33 mpg combined EPA-rating . A word of caution, however. Although the Spark can carry up to four occupants, it’ll be a tight fit for those in the backseat. The 2022 Spark LS with an optional continuously variable automatic transmission starts at $15,695 (all prices include destination charge).

Mitsubishi Mirage
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage carries a small price premium over the Spark, but it also brings improved fuel efficiency: With an available CVT, the Mirage offers an EPA-rated 39 mpg combined. The Mirage also adds one additional seat in the rear to fit a total of five occupants. Although it can handle a trip to the lake or a staycation around town, the Mirage’s 78-horsepower, 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine paired with the CVT isn’t made for the track — but its handling offers a relatively fun driving experience. The ES hatchback starts at $16,990 and the G4 sedan at $17,990.

If your summer road-trip goals boil down to avoiding jarring road noise and anxiety at the pump, the 2022 Kia Rio delivers on both. Like the Mirage, the Rio seats five and comes in hatchback or sedan variants. The 120-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT gets an EPA-rated 36 mpg combined. Quiet on the highway and with stable handling, the base LX trim comes with an affordable starting price of $17,275. An added bonus is that the Rio gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.
SUVs may come with notably higher starting prices than their car counterparts, but they also carry the added benefits of flexible cargo space and a higher ride height for long summer drives. Choosing from the list of the most affordable SUVs with the highest mpg may check all the boxes in the “practical” category of your shopping list.
Hyundai Kona
For being the most affordable SUV on the market, the Hyundai Kona isn’t short on road-trip-friendly features that include standard automatic emergency braking, hands-on lane centering, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with wireless connectivity on the base model’s 8-inch touchscreen. In our review of the 2022 model, we also found it engaging to drive — a rarity for the subcompact SUV class. Plus, the Kona’s 147-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and front-wheel drive offer an EPA-rated 32 mpg combined, making it a solid choice for weekend getaways. The gas-powered Kona SE starts at $22,395, while an electric variant is sold in select states with a $35,245 starting price.

Chevrolet Trailblazer
The subcompact Trailblazer was introduced in 2021 and offers a surprisingly fun driving experience despite modest power from the base 137-hp, 1.2-liter three-cylinder. It also brings standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and active-safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning with steering assist. To make it more adventure-friendly, a trailering package and roof rack crossbars are available factory accessories. The Trailblazer is competitive both in fuel economy and price: It gets an EPA-rated 30 mpg combined with standard FWD and starts at $22,795 for the base LS trim.
Shop the 2022 Chevrolet TrailBlazer near you
One of the HR-V’s best features when it comes to road trips is its versatile and roomy interior: The second row offers more space than most subcompact SUVs, and the multiposition second-row Magic Seat can fold flat to offer competitive cargo space for standard luggage or fold up to accommodate taller items. A 141-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder provides power and gets an EPA-rated 30 mpg combined. The base HR-V starts at $23,115; unlike some of its competitors, however, the base model does not offer standard safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Ford Maverick
All-new for 2022, the Ford Maverick is the only pickup truck to make the list of efficient road-trip vehicles with a combined rating of 30 mpg or more.
The base Ford Maverick’s standard gas-electric hybrid powertrain makes 191 hp and is paired with a CVT for an EPA-rated 37 mpg combined. Even though it doesn’t match the full-size F-150’s towing or payload capacity, the compact pickup can hold its own on the road thanks to a sizable cargo bed and towing capacity of up to 4,000 pounds with the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. The Maverick has a $21,490 starting price and earned both our Best of the Year 2022 and Best Pickup Truck of 2022 awards.

Electric Vehicles
If avoiding gas stations entirely is your ideal plan, there are a handful of affordable EVs that can accommodate you. But while filling up at a gas station demands only a quick detour off the highway, road trips in a battery-powered vehicle involve more preparation. It’s important to consider the vehicle’s maximum range — most EVs with the longest range are luxury models that don’t overlap with the most affordable options.
This means mapping out public charging stations along the route will be required for longer trips. The top battery-powered vehicles for road trips offer an EPA-estimated range of 200 miles or more and are offered in all 50 states. Additionally, the Nissan Leaf and Kia Niro EV are still eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit .
Nissan Leaf
The most affordable EV currently available doesn’t just eliminate the concern of rising gas prices, it also bucks the trend of rising vehicle prices. In fact, the 2022 Leaf sees a significant price cut and additional features : the ProPilot Assist safety suite, a 360-degree camera system and a portable Level 2 charging cable. Although the standard Leaf’s 40-kilowatt-hour battery and 147-hp electric motor offer just 149 miles of range per EPA-estimates , the extended-range Leaf Plus brings a more road-trip-worthy 226 miles of range from a 62-kWh battery and 214-hp motor. The standard range Nissan Leaf starts at $28,425, the Leaf Plus at $33,425.
Shop the 2022 Nissan Leaf near you
Chevrolet Bolt EV, Bolt EUV
Like the Leaf, the Bolt EV hatchback also sees a price cut for 2022; its starting price is nearly $5,000 less compared to the outgoing model. The redesigned 2022 Bolt EV gets a new interior, more standard safety tech and an all-new and larger Bolt EUV SUV sibling. Both Bolts are powered by a 65-kWh battery and 200-hp single electric motor, but the hatch gets a range advantage with an EPA-estimated 259 miles, compared to the EUV’s 247-mile range. Despite a rocky start for the 2022s with multiple recalls and stop-sale orders, GM has offered a fix and resumed production . The 2022 Bolt EV starts at $32,495 and the 2022 Bolt EUV at $34,495.

Kia Niro EV
Sold alongside its hybrid and plug-in hybrid counterparts, the Niro EV also shares a powertrain with the related Hyundai Kona Electric; unlike the Kona Electric, however, the Niro EV is available in all 50 states. The Niro also carries advantages over the Kona that include a larger backseat and longer range (the Niro gets an EPA-estimated 239 miles). Although the Niro family sees a redesign for 2023 , the outgoing model still has a lot to offer shoppers, including a competitive starting price of $41,205.

Summer Road-Trip Maintenance and Tips
Whether you’re planning to get a new vehicle or take your trusty old one on a summer road trip, it’s a good idea to make sure the car is ready for the trip. AAA recommends checking the tires and tire pressure ; testing the brakes and the battery; topping off oil and other fluids; checking belts and hoses; checking the air conditioning; and stocking the vehicle with an emergency supply kit .
The EV ownership experience differs from a gas-powered car, especially when planning a road trip. You’ll need to account for the vehicle’s range and map out charging stations along the route if the range is insufficient. Many EVs come with a smartphone app to check the vehicle’s mileage range and battery charge and help you find charging stations on the go; for example, Chevy offers EV Access through its OnStar Connected services for the Bolt EV and EUV, and a similar app is offered for the Nissan Leaf through NissanConnect EV Services .

There’s a reason why so many families tell and retell the stories of long-ago road trips in the family car. The truth is, being in such close quarters with the ones we love most can create some hilarious situations and wonderful memories, but it can also be stressful. Need some help avoiding motion sickness and keeping the peace between quarrelsome kids? Follow our tips for family car travel and make your next trip one to remember.
Before you hit the road, be honest with yourself about what you and your children can handle in the way of a road trip. While older children might be capable of dealing with 10+ hours in the family van, chances are your 4-year-old isn’t. Generally speaking, young children should not be subjected to confinement in a car for more than six hours a day. This is just as much for your sanity as it is for theirs.
If your family car is better suited to in-town trips rather than long hauls, think about renting a van. A van will, at minimum, leave everyone enough room to create their own personal space. If your 8-year-old doesn’t share his toys, chances are he isn’t going to want to share elbow room either. If you decide to rent, make your reservation well in advance, especially during peak travel times. See our article on car rental tips for more information.
Start packing , at least mentally, a few days before you leave. Let the kids help pack their own bags if they are old enough, and discuss the trip with them — kids are much better behaved when they know what to expect. Packed bags mean less confusion, less standing around and less frustration on departure day. This translates into a pleasant start to your road trip.
A great way to avoid the inevitable question (are we there yet?) is to give kids a map, or, even more fun, help them create their own. You can trace the route together and point out interesting landmarks so that they will have a sense of where they are going.
What to Bring
Safety first — if you decide to rent a car, bring your own car seats. Chances are they are of a higher quality than those provided by rental car companies and more comfortable for the kids too. Bring along a first-aid kit to treat minor mishaps.
Just this once, go against your parenting books and let the television baby-sit your kids. Portable DVD players might just be the key to your sanity on a long trip — you may want to go as far as to get one for each child. No arguments about whether to watch “Dora the Explorer” or “Spiderman” means peace and quiet for you.
Whatever you were planning on bringing in the way of snacks — double it. And toss the rules about junk food on the roadside — this is one time to let your daughter have another cookie or your son another juice box. One day of poor eating cannot destroy a life of healthy habits. Pack their favorite healthy snacks, and keep the junky ones for when you get desperate.
Some other items to consider: books on CD, their favorite music CD’s, blankets, pillows and favorite small toys. Coloring books and crayons will also keep the young ones occupied — surprise them with a new one when the car gets moving. Keep the car clean by taking along a trash bag to collect the remains of snack time and moist wipes to clean up minor spills. An easily accessible (not packed deep in the trunk) change of clothes is a wise idea in case of spills or accidents.
For more packing help, see our interactive packing list .
Avoiding and Treating Motion Sickness
Over-the-counter drugs are available for treating motion sickness; many must be taken before the trip starts. Consult your doctor before giving your kids any new medications. If your child complains of dizziness or nausea, chances are it is just motion sickness and can be cured temporarily by getting out of the car for fresh air. If you can’t stop the car, open the car window and encourage the child to look outside the car rather than focusing on a point inside the vehicle. Avoid hard-to-digest foods and keep dry crackers on hand to munch on if nausea sets in.
Keep the Peace
Take advantage of sights along the way, even if it’s just at a neighborhood park or a McDonald’s with a playground. Although it might add time to the trip, stopping often will keep the journey interesting for young travelers. Sometimes a quick stop to burn off energy is all they need to get back in the car happily.
Plan your road trip with your child’s sleeping schedule in mind. Many parents choose to leave late in the evening and let the children sleep while they divide the driving. Other parents will try their best to adhere to nap times in the car — after all, few things are more unpleasant than a child who’s missed his or her nap.
Don’t expect your children to share nicely. Make sure you’ve packed ample toys, games, books and snacks for each child so the fighting is kept to a minimum. If there is room, change up the scenery in the car by letting an old-enough child ride in the passenger seat while an adult rides in the back seat with a younger child. Lastly, if you are traveling with a spouse, consider designating roles: driver and entertainer. The driver will concentrate on the road while the other keeps the peace — keeping your whole family happy and, most importantly, safe.

10 Cars That Are Great For Family Trips
The wrong car can ruin a family road trip. Luckily, these ten vehicles should get the job done without any trouble.
Every day, families plan trips to go to places. Whether it is a day trip, a weekend getaway, or even a few days, there is almost always a car that they decide to pack up and head out in. The selections of cars vary from SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks, to even station wagons.
RELATED: 10 Most Comfortable Yet Affordable Cars
What do these cars have in common? Space, tech, fuel economy, but most importantly, ride comfort. For families that love traveling and are on the hunt for a car to go about their adventures, here is a list of what to look at what to get next.
10 Buick Regal TourX
The Buick Regal TourX is a hot station wagon that offers plenty of space and has great ride comfort for family vacations. If it didn't have great ride comfort, is it really a Buick? Not only that but there is plenty of tech for the occupants, especially for the kids.
Specifically, the Regal TourX has a panoramic sunroof with a powered sunshade. As for fuel economy, the Regal TourX gets around 21 miles to the gallon in the city and almost 30 miles to the gallon on the highway. A final thing about the TourX is that it comes with an all-wheel drive system as standard.
9 Dodge Caravan
When some people think of family vacations, the first thing that comes to mind is driving/riding in a van. Not just any van though, the Dodge Caravan. Why is that? Well, there is no denying that the Caravan has been a popular choice. With cabin space to pack for a month's journey, mixed with ride comfort that excels most GT cars, the Caravan is not one to ignore.
RELATED: 10 Common Mistakes Car Owners Make (That Could Lead To Costly Repairs)
Plus, nothing beats watching/putting on a movie on the mounted television while driving a few hours to distract the kids from crying? Fuel economy is alright with the Caravan. Approximately 17 miles to the gallon in the city and about 25 miles per gallon on the highway.
8 Subaru Outback
An SUV that almost defines traveling, be it off and on the road. With the interior space and design of a station wagon, good ride comfort, all-wheel drive, and some tech to entertain the children for a journey, the Subaru Outback can go almost anywhere.
Putting aside the advanced tech, the Outback's roof rails for surfboards or luggage holders are made with travelers in mind. Fuel economy in the 2020 Outback is better than most, with around 26 miles to the gallon in the city and nearly 33 miles to the gallon on the highway.
7 Volkswagen Arteon
The Volkswagen Arteon gets a place on this list for having plenty of space and great comfort for the entire family. It is built in the hatchback-sedan style. While Volkswagen may have trouble elsewhere when it comes to tech, no one will be complaining about how bad their backs are hurting after a decent drive.
RELATED: 10 Reasons Volkswagen Drivers Are Obsessed With Their Cars
The best tech the Arteon has is the sound system, all-wheel drive, and a panoramic sunroof. This depends on the model options. The fuel economy for the Arteon is decent. It gets about 22 miles to the gallon in the city and 31 miles to the gallon on the highway.
6 Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer makes the list for being a long-standing SUV that has sustained a mild reputation over the years. But that doesn't mean it is unworthy of being a great vehicle for traveling. It helps too when the Explorer has the 4x4 option.
Along with most options offered by modern vehicles, the Explorer offers tons of trunk space for trips. Furthermore, Ford's car is a comfortable ride as well. The new 2020 Explorer gets pretty good fuel economy compared to most SUVs. Rated around 27 miles to the gallon in the city and about 29 miles per gallon on the highway, the Explorer is no joke.
5 Dodge Charger
The Dodge Charger has tons of room in both its cabin and trunk. Able to hold a few large suitcases in the trunk and comfortably sit the family in the back seat, the Charger is also quite a comfortable vehicle, which is always important in road trips.
The speakers are generally quite good for music, so entertainment should not be too big of a problem. Fuel economy is ok when it comes to some standards. The new Charger offers approximately 19 miles to the gallon in the city and around 30 miles to the gallon on the highway.
4 Acura MDX
The Acura MDX earns a spot not only for its cabin space but also for the company's available seat options , ones designed to ensure comfort. The MDX also offers a nice view of the outside with a panoramic sunroof.
RELATED: 10 Best Family Cars You Can Buy In 2019
Not only that, but the MDX has great speakers for music. All-wheel drive is also an option. To top it off, the fuel economy is not too bad. The 2020 MDX offers about 20 miles to the gallon in the city and around 27 miles to the gallon on the highway.
3 Honda Accord
The Honda Accord makes it onto the list because of the ride comfort and cabin space. Furthermore, the trunk space holds a few suitcases and coolers for snacks. As for ride comfort, the Accord definitely allows no occupants to have any problems with discomfort, be it during the drive, or just getting to the end of the journey. Both the easily adjustable front seats and the spacious back rows are a treat.
Some models, when given the option, have a panoramic sunroof for the children to see what the sky looks like during the long drives. The best thing about the Accord is the fuel economy. It can get around 30 miles to the gallon in the city and about 38 miles to the gallon on the highway.
2 Chevrolet Impala
Sure, Chevrolet is killing off the Impala, but that doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to make this list. Sure, the Impala gets around 19 miles to the gallon in the city and just about 28 miles to the gallon on the highway, but it makes up for it in cabin/trunk space.
RELATED: The 10 Most Reliable SUV's Of 2019
The Impala comfortably seats its occupants and holds enough room for a few suitcases and a cooler in the trunk. Ride comfort makes sure that the passengers aren't complaining about being sore. The Impala should definitely be a car to take a second look at.
1 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon deserves to be on this list regardless of costing a steep $66,000. Mercedes-Benz is known for being an ultimate luxury vehicle, and the E-Class delivers on that promise.
The other cars on the list come close to the E-Class wagon, but this is a benchmark in this category under the standards on the list. With all-wheel drive, USB connection, cruise control, climate control, and various other features , the E-Class is well stocked in terms of features. Fuel economy is decent with 19 miles to the gallon in the city and 26 miles to the gallon on the highway.

My family tried traveling by train instead of car, and I get the hype. Here are 6 ways rail travel is better.
Posted: May 12, 2023 | Last updated: July 12, 2023
- After taking road trips throughout the US, I tried traveling by Amtrak train instead.
- My experiences on the rails have been comfortable and hassle-free, albeit not the most efficient.
- Trains aren't the answer for every trip, but I've begun to incorporate them into more of my travels.
Ahead of my family vacation to California, I dreamed of cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway . There was just one problem: My son suffered from terrible car sickness.
To avoid scrubbing vomit out of a rental car's upholstery, I booked tickets on the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Oakland to Santa Barbara.
The smooth, nine-hour journey offered all of the magnificent ocean views I would've wanted to see on the road trip, with none of the upset stomachs.
Since that trip, my son has found ways to manage his car sickness, and we've successfully traveled to 44 states by car. But there's a host of reasons my family is still choosing to return to rail travel .
Many Amtrak trains offer scenic views of some of the country's most beautiful locales.
When it comes to spectacular views , there's a lot to see from train windows.
Though not all of Amtrak's routes pass idyllic settings, some journey through the US' most beautiful landscapes. I've enjoyed gazing at vineyards, mountains, harbor seals, and more on my rail travels.
Many Amtrak trains, including the Coast Starlight, have observation cars with giant picture windows designed with sightseeing in mind.
As someone who's generally the designated driver on road trips , I savor the ability to sit back and take in the stunning scenery without the fear of taking my eyes off the road for too long.
Some trains also stop in underrated destinations I wouldn't have otherwise visited.
Amtrak offers picturesque long-haul journeys through the Rockies , the American Southwest, and beyond.
The prospect of gazing at snowcapped mountains and soaring red-rock formations is exciting, but these journeys also offer a compelling opportunity to stop and explore less-touted areas along the way — ones that I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit otherwise.
Though some of the highlights from my road trips have been stumbling upon hidden gems in locales often labeled as flyover states (like spots in the US' heartland), driving through the Midwest's flatlands can feel like a bit of a slog.
However, I find stretches of farmland infinitely more charming when I view them out of a train window instead of a car dashboard.
Depending on the itinerary and season, traveling by train can be more affordable than driving.
Between gas prices and rental-car charges, road trips can be expensive ventures.
When it comes to Amtrak trains, you can expect to pay a premium for a private room in a sleeping car or a coveted last-minute ticket. However, you can usually find reasonably priced tickets with some advance planning.
On a trip my family recently took from New York to Pennsylvania, all three of our tickets for the Amtrak Keystone Service cost me a total of $47.50 — an absolute steal considering our trip fell during a peak travel period.
In many major cities, I probably would've paid the same amount for a few hours of parking.
I feel safer traveling by train than by car, especially in poor weather conditions.
It gives me peace of mind to know that taking a train is statistically safer than driving a car . Plus, Amtrak has a lot of safety standards in place .
Though I feel confident in my driving abilities, I prefer not to be behind the wheel in certain situations, like when I have to navigate Manhattan streets or battle icy road conditions.
Trains are usually less impacted by weather, making them a solid transportation option in less-than-ideal conditions.
Amtrak's seats feel wider and more comfortable than the ones in most cars.
It's no surprise that traveling can make you feel a bit cramped, especially if you're constricted to a car seat for a long drive.
Regardless of how I travel, I'm always very eager to reach my destination and stretch my legs. In my experience, I've found that even the most bare-bones Amtrak trains offer wider seats than I've seen in most cars and a reasonable amount of legroom.
The trains' observation and dining cars are a real treat for my family since they allow us to enjoy peaceful moments, play a rousing game, or simply take advance of the freedom that comes with not being strapped in one place.
Rail journeys give me time and space to work, spend time with family, and rest.
Train travel isn't always the fastest way to reach my destination, but I've found that it's the mode of transportation that gives me the most time to be productive .
As someone who works remotely, trains are the perfect place to multitask and catch up on my to-do list, something I can't accomplish as easily in cars.
I obviously can't use my computer while driving, and attempting to do so in the passenger seat makes me queasy. However, traveling by train gives me an easy way to knock out work, help my son with his homework, read a book, or take a nap.
Trains aren't the right option for every trip, but I look forward to incorporating more of them in my future travels.
Amtrak trains have provided a lot of benefits for my family, but like any mode of transportation, they come with their own set of downsides. Trains, especially long-haul ones, are known to be plagued with delays. So you do have to pack some patience and be flexible.
The routes Amtrak offers can also be limiting and inconvenient, with the journey between some destinations requiring multiple train changes that take you hundreds of miles and many hours out of the way.
I've decided that they're a great way for my family to travel in addition to road trips, but not in place of them.
I adore the spontaneity and impulsiveness that comes with traveling by car and wouldn't trade the experience of pulling off the road to explore a quirky roadside attraction or stop for fresh baked goods at a local vendor's stand.
I'm already plotting future trips and can't wait to see what's ahead on the rails and on the road.

How to escape if your car goes underwater
Exiting the car in the first minute it begins to sink improves your chance of survival.
It’s a nightmare scenario for drivers: Your car leaves the road and plunges into water, transforming your vehicle into a sinking trap.
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge into the Patapsco River early Tuesday may have stoked fears that you could encounter a similar catastrophe in your own car. Officials with the Baltimore fire department said sonar has detected vehicles submerged in the water, but it was unclear whether anyone was inside.
A distress call from the freighter that crashed into the bridge and caused the collapse gave officials time to halt more vehicle traffic over the bridge, said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D). As of midday Tuesday, two workers had been rescued from a crew that was repairing potholes on the Key Bridge; six workers were still missing.
In the right conditions, drivers who stay calm have a chance to escape an underwater car. In 2013, a 22-year-old woman from Calvert County, Md., survived after her car went off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and fell 27 feet into the water.
One minute to get out
Thermal physiologist Gordon Giesbrecht, a retired University of Manitoba professor with an expertise in vehicle submersion and hypothermia, said passengers have one minute to rescue themselves from a sinking car. Once the vehicle becomes even partially submerged, the odds of survival are slim.
“A minute is kind of an average number,” Giesbrecht said. “So the windows will certainly work for 60 seconds, but if you know what you’re doing, you can open that window in 10 or 15 seconds.”
He said travelers should memorize the acronym SWOC:
- Seat belts off.
- Windows open.
- Out immediately.
- Children first.
“A lot of people think you should open the doors, which you shouldn’t,” Giesbrecht said. “The car is just going deeper and deeper, and once the water gets up against the window, then you won’t even be able to open the window. So you’ve got to get that window open as soon as you can.”
Giesbrecht said electric windows should still operate within a minute “because your ignition was on.”
When helping children, push the oldest out first so you can help the youngest passengers. Giesbrecht said it is easier to push than pull passengers out, so remain in the car until your dependents have safely evacuated.
Cars in deep water typically sink nose first, so you can buy a few more seconds by exiting out a back window. If there’s a release button in the front seat for a rear hatch, then you can escape through the back, but don’t waste time trying to locate it.
Once the car begins to sink nose down, the passengers will start to run out of air. Any air bubbles will escape out the back. In shallower water, a car might descend horizontally, so passengers could sustain themselves on a trapped air pocket, but Giesbrecht said this scenario is “very rare.”
Tools don’t work on laminated glass
According to Giesbrecht, smashing a car window is not feasible. Cars that have laminated windows instead of tempered glass are resistant to hard force; not one of the six tools tested in a AAA study were able to break through. A label on the bottom corner of a side window will identify tempered or laminated glass, but that helps only if you have it memorized.
Giesbrecht said that, when you have only a minute to save yourself, it’s not worth the time to search for an instrument.
“Very few people could ever break a window in the first place,” he said. “Once the physics of the water changes, you can’t break the window anyway, even if you had a hammer.”
Once you’re in the water, Giesbrecht said, you need to control your breath, assess your surroundings and climb onto or cling to the vehicle while it is afloat.
“You can hang on to the vehicle as long as you can,” he said, “or until you determine the closest or easiest place you can get to.”
Hypothermia is not an immediate problem, Giesbrecht said, because it takes an hour for someone to become cold enough for the heart to stop. However, drowning is a real concern, especially if you panic or go into shock after plunging into the water.
“The first thing that will happen when you’re in cold water is a cold shock response, which is gasping and hyperventilating or heavy breathing,” he said. The cold could incapacitate your muscles and nerves, and you could lose your ability to swim.
“We have the 1-10-1 principle,” Giesbrecht added. “You have one minute to get your breathing under control. Ten minutes of meaningful movement. And about an hour before you become unconscious due to hypothermia.”
Make yourself visible
Andy Blair, director of the National Outdoor Leadership School Teton Valley, offered several survival tips for after you have escaped the car and are in the water. He said to keep your shoes on. They can be helpful when swimming in open water and scrambling on rocks or other sharp terrain.
“If they’re really big, heavy boots, they might be more of an impediment,” he said, “but once you get to shore, you’re going to want to have some shoes on.”
Blair said wearing street clothes in cold water that is moving downstream and not having a flotation device is “probably one of your worst-case situations.” However, he recommends securing any loose garments that could snag in the water. He said more form-fitting clothes will reduce your surface area and your exposure to the water.
If swimming to shore is not an option because of the distance or your stamina level, grab a piece of buoyant debris or hoist yourself up on a larger object if you can. Also, hold up an eye-catching item that could attract the attention of a search-and-rescue crew or a bystander.
“For the average person in that situation, their best bet is to find something they can stay afloat with and make themselves as visible as possible,” he said.
Baltimore bridge collapse
How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.
Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.
Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .
Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

Cars exit from the Baltimore Port after the cargo ship Dali ran into and collapsed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Md., on Tuesday. Two people were pulled alive from the water, two bodies were recovered and four people were presumed dead. The men were working on the bridge at the time of the collision at 1:30 a.m.
When the Francis Scott Key Bridge was struck by a cargo ship and collapsed, it was a shocking disaster that took the lives of six men working on the bridge at the time.
It also blocked off much of the port.
That raised alarm bells in the auto industry — because the Port of Baltimore handles more cars and light trucks than any other port in the U.S., and clearing the debris could take months .
Automakers were quick to emphasize that they were adapting . GM says it is rerouting deliveries. Stellantis is working on "contingency plans." Mercedes says it has options. Mazda says it has yet to finalize alternatives to this "vital" port. But it's not easy.

Imported cars travel in special ships
That's because rerouting an imported vehicle is a lot more complicated than redirecting a shipping container . Not all ports are equally equipped to unload the vessels that carry vehicles — a special "roll-on roll-off," or ro-ro ship.
And once unloaded, vehicles need to be inspected for damage and often need to have accessories or electronics installed. There's important paperwork after a car comes off a ship before it can can go to a dealer.
That all happens at a port facility that's typically built right next to where the ships unload, and it's a big reason why the vessels can't be sent just anywhere — even if you can get them off the ship at another port, who's going to install the subwoofers and finalize the window sticker?
Still, companies have several options, even though these might cause delays.
Part of the Baltimore port can still accept vehicles
First, part of the Baltimore port that handles vehicles is still operational.
The Tradepoint Atlantic terminal is located at the mouth of the harbor, before the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Volkswagen and BMW operate there, and as a result, those two automakers expect no impacts from the disaster. On Wednesday, a ship with Volkswagens arrived and was able to dock like normal.
Tradepoint Atlantic says its operation is "well equipped to handle additional levels of [vehicle] cargo. Plans to accept redirected cargo are underway, including the ability to handle the increased capacity."
Unload cars at a different port and drive them to Baltimore
Second, automakers could unload vehicles from a ship at a different port altogether and then drive them to their Baltimore facilities for those crucial processing steps, like inspections and part installations.
The Port of New York and New Jersey says it would be able to take vehicles off a ship and put them immediately on a car carrier truck bound for Baltimore, three hours away.
"Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this collapse," Bethann Rooney, port director, said in a statement, adding that the port "is proactively working with our industry partners to respond as needed and ensure supply chain continuity along the East Coast."
Those two options would also have a benefit for Baltimore as the city reels from the loss of a crucial bridge. They would allow at least some port jobs to continue, boosting the local economy, while the waterways are blocked.
Cars can also go to vehicle-focused ports farther away
As a third option, automakers could use a port farther afield, where they are already processing other vehicles.
For instance, Brunswick in Georgia is the second busiest port for vehicles after Baltimore — and Mercedes and Subaru, which import many vehicles through Baltimore, also have large processing operations there.
Officials at Brunswick say that the port has been contacted by companies as an interim solution while the Baltimore port is partially blocked, and that the port has unused capacity to process another 200,000 vehicles per year.
So that one port could absorb a significant chunk of the vehicles normally routed through Baltimore, which processed just shy of 850,000 vehicles last year. Other ports are also home to vehicle processing centers.
However, using a more distant port would mean a longer journey to dealerships. On the upside, because many vessels carrying vehicles make multiple stops up and down the East Coast, it might not require a detour at sea; that ro-ro ship would just unload more vehicles than originally planned at other ports, to make up for what it can't drop off at Baltimore.
Automakers and logistic companies could use a combination of strategies to address this shipping disruption.

A Georgia father allegedly killed his two baby daughters when he lit the car they were in on fire during an argument with his wife Saturday, state authorities said.
Adan Tzoyohua Panzo, 36 was charged with the murder of his daughters, 1 and 3 years old, after first responders rushed to put out the vehicle fire in front of a home in the small community of Preston, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
After the flames were extinguished, the two girls were found dead inside the vehicle, the state agency said.
Panzo was arrested after an investigation indicated he allegedly set the car on fire during a “domestic dispute” with his wife, authorities said.
“My guys were told on the way to the call that there was two children in the car,” Webster County Fire Chief Cody Brown told WALB. “They got on scene, pulled lines, and extinguished the fire.”
Panzo was charged with felony murder, malice murder and arson, and is booked in Webster County Jail, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said as the probe continues.
“It’s really sad to hear that a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old lost their life,” a local told WALB.
“They’re not even out in the world just yet. They’re not even able to understand or comprehend what was going on. I couldn’t imagine what they were feeling during that situation.”
Preston is an unincorporated community in the southwest part of the Peach State near the Alabama border with a population around 1,000.

Miss. Teen Was Chased, Fatally Hit By Police Car on Walk Home, Family Says, as They Plead for Body-Camera Video
Kadarius Smith, 17, died March 21. His family is asking for the body-camera footage depicting the police cruiser’s fatal impact

Kadarius Smith, 17, was walking home with friends when a Mississippi police cruiser sped up behind him and “began chasing him,” according to a press release from civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, who is representing the teenager’s family.
Running him over from behind in the early morning hours of March 21, the cruiser left tire marks across his back, according to Kadarius’s mother who is cited in the release. The 17-year-old later died of his injuries.
“This tragedy should have never happened and the officers involved must be held accountable,” Crump said in the statement. “It is unconscionable that an officer would fatally run over a teenager who was running away from them.”

Crump called for the immediate termination of the Leland police officer driving the cruiser — who has not been publicly identified — and publicly asked that the “unedited video footage” of the incident be released to the teenager’s family.
“Kadarius’ family deserves accountability and answers as to how and why he was killed by an officer in such an inhumane way,” Crump added.
The police officer driving the cruiser involved in Kadarius’s death remains employed by the Leland Police Department, Edward J. Bogen, Jr., the lawyer representing the city of Leland, Miss., and its police force confirmed in a phone interview with PEOPLE Thursday morning.
The officer – whose name and position Bogen said he did not know – has been placed on administrative leave, pending an independent investigation by the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, according to the city’s lawyer, who said the police department “immediately referred” the case to the other law enforcement entities for review. (The officer's race has not been publicly released.)
“The description of the alleged facts as stated by Mr. Crump is about as far from the truth – from what I have been told – as occurred that night,” says Bogen, who declined to provide specific facts countering the allegations against the officer driving the cruiser, repeatedly citing the ongoing investigation throughout the interview.
“But the allegation that he was simply walking home with friends — that’s just not true,” Bogen says, adding: “All I can say is that the police department was responding to a call that night.”
Asked again for a detailed account of what occurred in the early morning hours of March 21, Bogen said: “I think it would be best – because what I know is based on what I’ve been told, which is nothing but hearsay – I’d rather rely on the independent investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.”

Crump has previously represented the families of Trayvon Martin , Michael Brown and Martin Lee Anderson — all Black teenagers who died in high-profile, officer-involved incidents across the country.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) , Crump – who has additionally represented the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor – wrote that Kadarius’s family had retained him “to hopefully gain answers & accountability for this young man’s death!”
Google Maps
Kadarius’s death – which occurred near Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Huddleston Street in Leland, Miss., less than a two-hour drive from the state’s capital – follows a recent string of high-profile police brutality cases in Mississippi.
Last week, six White former law enforcement officers who called themselves the “ Goon Squad ” were sentenced in the racially-motivated attack of two Black men in Braxton, Miss. Former Rankin County sheriff’s deputy Hunter Elward – who shot Michael Jenkins in the mouth, nearly severing his tongue – was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for the January 2023 incident, which, per a federal complaint obtained by PEOPLE, began after a neighbor complained about Black men staying at a White woman’s house.
In a separate incident earlier this month, a former police officer in nearby Pearl, Miss., pleaded guilty in a case in which he forced a detainee to “lick” up his own urine .
The Department of Justice is also now investigating Mississippi’s Lexington Police Department in order to, per an email describing the line of inquiry, “assess the use of force; discriminatory policing; stops, searches, and arrests; and potential violations of the right to engage in protected speech and conduct.”

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel
Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.
“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing
Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”
Here’s what we know.
Which cruises go to Baltimore?
Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”
Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.
Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.
The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.
“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”
The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .
Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.
The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."
Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next
American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.
“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.
Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.
"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.
Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge
Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .
Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.
Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

This Device Saved My House From an Electrical Fire. And You Might Be Able to Get It for Free.
I was in my car, miles from home, when a panicky phone alert shook me out of my NPR haze: An electrical fire hazard had been detected at my house. Immediately I called my wife, who told me the house wasn’t burning. Then I called the number in the alert to determine what it was all about.
The alert came from Ting , an electricity-monitoring service whose device I’d plugged into an outlet a few weeks earlier and almost forgotten about. The Ting agent who answered my call calmed me down a little but also assured me that the device had detected a serious fire hazard. He even told me where the hazard was located and said I should call my utility company right away.
The next morning I had a visit from my electric company. The electrician gave me a skeptical harrumph when I showed him the information on the Ting smartphone app, but he inspected the issue anyway. About 20 minutes later he came back to me, quite surprised, and confirmed that the Ting Sensor had indeed found a big problem. A team returned that day to put a temporary fix on it, and over the next several weeks, contractors dug up my front yard to replace the main power line, at no expense to me.

What is ting, and what does it do.
The Ting Sensor is a device about the size of a smart plug or baby monitor. Once you plug it into a wall outlet, connect it to Wi-Fi, and set it up with the accompanying app, it goes into a learning mode for about a week, where it monitors your home to establish a baseline of electrical activity.
After that it starts looking for fire hazards in the form of electrical arcs, which happen when electricity jumps from one place to another when it isn’t supposed to. Arcs are a leading cause of home electrical fires and can develop in overloaded outlets, in damaged or old wiring, in lamps or light switches, or even (as in my case) in the main connection to your house. Just like other things in your home, components of your electrical system can age and wear out over time from normal use.
After the electric company resolved my incident, I talked to Bob Marshall, CEO of Whisker Labs, the maker of the Ting Sensor. He said that each electrical problem has a unique signature, which the Ting Sensor is designed to detect. For instance, an arc caused by a malfunctioning electric blanket looks different to the Ting Sensor than an arc caused by a faulty neutral connection.
The Ting Sensor takes 30 million measurements a second, looking for anomalies. When it identifies a problem it recognizes, the owner receives an alert through the Ting app that provides advice on what to do. Depending on the issue, a live member of the company’s Fire Safety Team may contact you to walk you through whatever remediation steps might be required.
In addition, if Ting finds a problem, the company will coordinate service by a licensed electrician and cover costs to remedy the problem up to $1,000. In my case, since the problem was the electrical connection to my home, the power company did the work at its own cost.
The simple Ting app features a main view showing your home’s electrical health in the form of a real-time voltage meter—sort of like taking your blood pressure. It tells you whether your home’s voltage is within normal range (the target is 120 volts, but between 108 V and 132 V is considered normal). Voltages outside that range, particularly for long periods, can damage appliances and may be an indication of a fire hazard. The app also shows any notifications from Ting and a history of readings and notifications. That’s about it. For most people, if your electrical system is working properly, you never have to look at the app.
In my case, I started getting readings outside the normal voltage range right away, and almost every day I received a notification, but it took a few weeks for Ting to analyze the pattern and discern what the problem was. Small dips and surges aren’t totally unusual, and I had noticed flickering lights in my house for a while (and ignored them).
What Ting doesn’t do
The Ting Sensor isn’t a smoke alarm or a replacement for one. If you knock over a candle or start a cooking fire, it won’t sound an alarm or send an alert to the fire department. Its purpose is to notify you about problems that have the potential start a fire, not to let you know about fires currently in progress. You still need multiple smoke detectors around your home, and we highly recommend a smart smoke detector .
If you live in an apartment, you can use Ting only if your unit has its own utility meter. If you’re not sure, consult with your building’s management.
Ting doesn’t integrate with other smart-home platforms such as Alexa or HomeKit; if you have a lot of smart-home devices and like to group them in one app, keep in mind that you still need the Ting app too. Because you interact with Ting only when the sensor detects a problem, there really isn’t much reason to integrate it with other systems anyway. The Ting Sensor doesn’t have a built-in alarm and can’t integrate with one, so the only way to get notifications is via your smartphone.
Although the device does monitor your electrical system, it doesn’t monitor energy usage, so it can’t tell you, say, that your aging fridge is using too much electricity or that other members of your household never turn the lights off . It also can’t turn your power off if it senses an immediate problem.
Another thing that isn’t a dealbreaker but is something to consider if you don’t have a lot of outlets in your home: The Ting Sensor is large enough to cover both receptacles in an outlet, so you can’t plug a lamp or something else in the same place.
How you can get one
I received my Ting Sensor the way most people do: for free from my homeowner’s insurance provider. My insurer sent me a few emails offering the device plus the monitoring service at no cost. Ting partners with insurers including Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, Pure, and State Farm to offer the devices to customers.
Insurance companies aren’t doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. Prevention is cheaper than rebuilding; the up-front costs are much less than paying out an insurance claim. This business model is similar to how most insurance companies are willing to pay toward the cost of a home security system.
Customers of Pure and State Farm can go to this page on the Ting site to get the device and enroll in the monitoring service. Liberty Mutual and Nationwide customers should contact their agent.
If your insurance company doesn’t offer Ting, you can buy the Ting Sensor directly from the manufacturer for $100, which includes one year of monitoring. After that, monitoring requires a $50 annual fee.

Yes, women are in car accidents too – and the crash test dummy family is finally catching up
There has long been criticism that dummies do not properly test for the female body shape, putting women at higher risk of injury and death

A smarter crash test dummy – with more female characteristics – is set to join Australia’s family.
The new female test device for human occupant restraint (also known as Thor) has a female-shaped pelvis, more sensors compared with previous models, and breasts. She weighs 47.5kg, is 1.5m tall and has 150 sensors that will measure the impact of a crash on areas where women are particularly vulnerable.
There has long been criticism that crash test dummies, which were created in the 1970s when drivers were mainly men, do not properly test for the female body shape, putting women at higher risk of injury and death.
Men are more likely than women to be involved in a car crash but women are more likely to be seriously injured . They are more vulnerable to whiplash, sit closer to the steering wheel and may have less dense bones.

Women also have different fat distribution, musculature and bone structure. Where “female” dummies exist, they tend to just be a shrunken version of the male.
The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute announced last year it had created the first dummy modelled entirely on a female body.
But the chief technical officer of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program, Mark Terrell, says Ancap uses a range of dummies to test and rate cars’ safety.
There are some misunderstandings about how crash test dummies work, he says, and Ancap has had dummies with female characteristics for a long time – but now plans to get a more advanced one.
From cadavers to dummies
In the early days of crash research, human volunteers, cadavers (corpses for scientific use) and animals were all used to measure the impacts of car crashes and inform the design of dummies.
But, the human volunteers proved “unfeasible”, not least because they could not be used in more serious crashes.
It has been revealed that as recently as 1993 university researchers in Germany were using adult and child cadavers in crash tests.
The use of cadavers was complicated by obvious moral and ethical reasons, but also by several practical considerations: they are not physically representative of live humans; they needed to have died non-violent deaths so the injuries could be clearly studied; and the experiments could not be replicated.
Chimpanzees, bears and pigs were also used to test the impact of accidents on organs but were phased out due to inadequate results as well as animal welfare concerns – although there are reports China was using pigs as recently as 2019.
The first artificial dummy, called Sierra Sam, was developed in the middle of last century and was a basic model used to test plane ejection seats. He was replaced in 1971 by the Hybrid 1, and since then the anthropomorphic test devices have continued to evolve.
after newsletter promotion
Today dummies are made of steel, aluminium and plastics, and filled with sensors. There are different ones for frontal and side crashes. Terrell says they combine male and female characteristics so even the “male” dummy can be used to predict the injury of a female.
Statistics and software are used to model different crash scenarios, sized people and vulnerability profiles, and to make the dummies as human-like as possible, while able to withstand the enormous pressure of a crash.
New vehicles are put through a range of destructive tests – frontal impact, side impact, run-off-road, rear-end and pedestrian strikes – at Ancap’s testing facilities in Sydney and Melbourne.
The vehicles are on a tow skate, and a cable system pulls them and other equipment around, with the tow skate disconnecting just before impact so the car is free running when it hits the target.
The dummies survive many crashes and many years – up to 20. They are recalibrated after a set number of tests, and parts are replaced when necessary.
“If you have a set of cadaver tests, there’ll be a range of different ages, sizes and statures, and also different genders and you need to use statistics and so on over maybe 100 tests and work out the scale to work out how that relates to a real person,” Terrell says.
“It’s not the case you have a female dummy based on female volunteers and male on male.
“We’re obviously aware that people driving cars aren’t all the same size … we choose the most appropriate dummy for each one, then we broaden that out.
“You end up with a tool that has human characteristics and is as human like as you can get, but it’s still simplified.”
Ancap has had a male Thor since 2020 and Terrell says there’s a long “gestation time” for new dummies.
“It’s not an area that moves fast,” he says. “But the next significant new dummy that we’ll see is a small female Thor.”
The manufacturer, Humanetics, says the female Thor has 150 sensor channels “designed to help address those parts of the body where women have increased vulnerability to injury”.
It has also developed an obese male and an elderly female dummy.
Ancap now has two fifth percentile Hybrid III females, meaning they weigh less than 95% of females. They are used to test airbags and seatbelts on smaller people who sit further forward, with the seatbelt in different positions.
A Hybrid III 50th percentile male dummy (meaning he is a median weight) is used to gather data on likely head, neck, chest, leg, knee and ankle injury risks.
There is a side impact dummy, and two children – representing a six-year-old and a 10-year-old.
Others are used to represent pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
