Are you wondering how to become a travel content creator? Then you’re in the right place!

In 2012 I was on the waitlist for Instagram to become available for Android, and in 2015, I decided I needed to come up with a way to make money online to create more freedom to travel. I knew instantly that I wanted to become a travel content creator .

There weren’t many professional Instagrammers to learn from at the time, nor were brands used to working with influencers, so I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning.

Since then, however, I have worked as a creator for 8+ years and on the other side, for a tourism board. And that means I know a thing or two about how to become a travel content creator and what brands and tourism boards look for when working with content creators.

🌟 Skip the guesswork and grab all my personal templates in the Travel Creator Toolkit !

Article overview

Is a content creator and influencer the same?

Passive income as a creator, 1. learn & plan, 2. find your secret sauce, 3. niche down, 4. pitch & build relationships, 5. build your portfolio, 6. work on your mindset, 7. consistency is key, the travel creator toolkit, remember to pin for later 😉, what is a content creator.

A content creator is someone who produces creative and engaging content for various media platforms, such as Instagram, blogs, podcasts, YouTube, etc. And a travel content creator is, of course, a content creator who focuses on content in the travel niche.

The role of a content creator involves a range of tasks, including generating ideas, researching and writing content, creating videos and shooting photos, editing and proofreading, managing social media accounts, analyzing data to measure the success of our content and reporting results to brands.

A content creator is necessarily not the same as an influencer. These days you can create UGC content for brands that you don’t post on your socials at all. You are also a content creator if you run an informative blog that people visit if they have a certain question.

An influencer, on the other hand, is a person who has built a large following on one or more platforms. They use their influence to promote products, services, or ideas to their followers and can have a significant impact on consumer behavior.

Example of content I have created as a travel content creator. Girl in a white coat with a green and pink scarf flowing towards the camera in Budapest.

Why become a travel content creator?

Before we look at my step-by-step guide to becoming a travel content creator , I wanted to quickly touch on why. Because, while working and earning money online as a content creator is a lot of fun, it is also a lot of hard work.

Pitching , no responses, endless hours of editing , reporting on results, engaging, building relationships, getting up early and staying up late to catch the perfect light, etc. So you have to want it to be able to stay with it when it gets hard.

Make sure this is something you really want to do, and that you have a passion for photography, video and/or writing. Try it out with some places close to home before you quit everything to head out on the road. Maybe a hotel in your hometown could use some fresh content?

When you are sure this is for you and you play your cards right, you get to explore the most amazing places while receiving email notifications like this:

As you can see, in addition to brand partnerships, you can also set up passive income streams that more or less run on automation while you are sleeping or are out having fun.

And that’s exactly what I want you to experience. The feeling of location and financial freedom. So your office also can look like this someday. It might look like I was in Japan…

But this was actually my office in Norway yesterday. For the last couple of months, I’ve been traveling in my home country, learning to appreciate what I’ve taken for granted for so many years. The incredible beauty that Norway has to offer . So yesterday my mom came to see me south in Kristiansand, and we went to the zoo.

Normally I wouldn’t recommend animal attractions, however, Kristiansand Zoo does incredible work with the conservation of some of the world’s most endangered species. So I’m happy to promote it.

I still had a course update to finish, so I spent a couple of hours working in the most beautiful surroundings and then enjoyed the rest of the day with my mom. Something I would not have been able to do on a regular Wednesday if I was stuck in a 9-5.

7 steps: Become a travel content creator

Now, let’s get to the juicy part. If I had to start over as a travel content creator knowing what I now know, this is exactly what I would do.

How do you plan on making money? Mainly through brand partnerships or are you thinking about additional income streams? Do you want to create a blog in addition to Instagram? Or are you focusing on TikTok? The first thing you should do is make a plan.

My number one tip is that you diversify your income from the very beginning. In addition to brand partnerships, think about how you can make money through affiliates and maybe selling digital products . When I started, I made money through affiliates before I made anything from brands. You can easily share affiliate links for products in your niche through stories or on your blog.

Learn as much as you can before you start so you can go straight for the money, don’t fumble around like I did for so long. Take advantage of living in a time where we have all the knowledge in the world at our fingertips.

There’s lots of free content around, however, I started seeing results when I invested in myself. I truly believe that the transformation is in the transaction. After completing 79 courses these are the very few I recommend:

  • Pro Blogger Bundle by Create and Go : Covers everything you need to know about making money online through a blog and social media with affiliates and digital products.
  • 6 months to 50k : This course helped me almost triple traffic to Sunshine Seeker, even though I already knew SEO. If you want to have a travel blog as part of your monetization strategy, there’s no one better to teach you than Nina Clapperton.
  • Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing : Created by Michelle who earns more than $ 50,000 a month through affiliate marketing.
  • The Travel Creator Toolkit : This is my baby, a collection of all the resources I have used over the years to make money as a travel content creator

Build an email list

Have you ever heard the saying, the money is in your list? That’s true for travel content creators as well. And that’s why I highly recommend you start growing an email list from the start.

You can get shut out of your social media and your website can get hacked at any time, your list of people who have chosen to interact with you is the only thing you truly own.

You can create a freebie to grow your list using my free Canva ebook template .

🌟 The reason why I am where I am today, able to travel wherever I want whenever I want, is because of this course (part of the Pro Blogger Bundle). And that’s not an exaggeration! You literally get an email marketing course within the course about creating digital products. Remember that the more passive income you can create in addition to working with brands, the more freedom you’ll have.

What do you know/do better than 8 out of every 10 people? That is what’s going to earn you a lot of money.

Do you draw or paint? Start an Instagram where you draw the destinations you visit. Film behind the scenes of you painting, the destination vs. the painting, etc. I can see so many pieces of content created out of one painting. Someone might already be doing this, I don’t know, but you get my point, right?

Find your uniqueness and highlight it!

Do you love fashion and plan the perfect outfit to fit in with every destination? Do you have a unique photography or videography style that stands out? Do you dance your way through the world? Are you a history buff with a lot of knowledge of historic places?

Use what sets you apart from everyone else for everything it’s worth!

And when you find your secret sauce, niche down. This is something I regret not doing when I first started. You don’t have to stick to one narrow niche forever, but it is so much easier to grow in the beginning when you focus on one thing. As I mention in my free pitching guide , brands are more likely to work with micro-influencers with a clear niche.

Your niche can be a specific destination, weekend guides in Europe, ethical animal attractions, travel with a handicap, street food, you name it. When you create a presence or an audience within a specific niche, you have a much larger chance of getting a yes from brands in that niche.

Just think if a yoga brand was considering working with a general travel influencer with 100,000 followers or a yoga travel micro-influencer with 10,000 followers. They know that most of the followers of the yoga influencer are most likely interested in yoga. However, they have no clue how many of the followers of the larger influencer are interested in yoga.

And when you grow, you can broaden your niche.

Start looking for brands that you would like to work with and put together a list. You can use the pitch tracker in my Travel Creator Toolkit or just Google Sheets.

  • Pro tip: Whenever I see one of my fellow travel creators doing a paid collaboration with a brand, I always check it out to see if it’s a good fit with my audience as well. Remember that it’s easier to get a yes from brands who already see the value of partnering with creators.

Follow and engage with these brands on Instagram, only genuine engagement of course. If you already own one of the products or have used a service and have some great content, post it and tag them to show what you can offer.

Then start pitching. And this is a number game, when I first started I sent out 10 carefully tailored pitches every week. You can get one of my pitch templates for free when you sign up above or at the bottom of this page, or you can get all my pitch examples in the toolkit . Remember to also check out my complete pitching guide for micro-influencers .

And start building your audience as soon as possible. My number one advice is to let your followers get to know you through stories. People are more likely to buy from you and support you when they feel connected to you.

Remember that you don’t have to be an influencer with a huge following to work as a travel content creator. You can create UGC content, you can reach out to brands, hotels and destinations to help with their overall online presence, you can take over their Instagram, etc.

It all comes down to how you can help the brand do something they can’t easily do themselves. So think about it, how can you offer value to both the brand and your audience?

UGC content

User-generated content, UGC, is all the rage right now. Think of it as our digital age word-of-mouth marketing. It is original, brand-specific content created by customers and published on your or the brand’s social media, website or used as ads.

I’ve seen a lot of smaller creators earn more money creating UGC than huge influencers with hundreds of thousands of followers.

I recommend pitching a package of videos for the brand to use as ads with a few different hooks so they can test to see what works best. That means you film one middle part of the video and maybe three different intros and outros with different hooks that will catch the attention of their different customers. Then the brand can edit the videos together as they please.

NEW! There’s now also a beginner’s guide to UGC in the Travel Creator Content .

Making money online as a blogger and travel content creator while living in Lombok

Before you leave home or quit your job, build up your portfolio. You can showcase your skills without having worked with any brands. Maybe you have taken some incredible photos or videos on a previous holiday? Maybe you have done some barter partnerships without getting paid? It doesn’t matter as long as it shows what you can offer!

In the beginning, I put everything together in my media kit (you get five different templates in the Travel Creator Toolkit ). From the media kit, you can link to any online portfolio like a travel blog, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

When I had a few paid partnerships under my belt I created a case study that I sent out together with my media kit. The case study outlined the brief, the content I created and the results I achieved. This is when I started to see some real traction and after a while brands started reaching out to me first.

Remember that all the people you pitch are different just like you and I, so they will be looking for different things. The best thing you can do is just to start somewhere to see what works in terms of pitch copy, media kit, case studies, etc. in your niche. Remember that clarity comes from action not thought!

Example of media kit/Case study/portfolio Canva Template for anyone wanting to work as a travel content creator.

I believe that success in any area of our lives comes down to 80% mindset and 20% strategy, so I work on mindset first with all my clients. Be sure to read about my 8 best strategies to cultivate a success mindset as a creator.

Because you will hear “no” more than you will hear “yes” in the beginning, don’t take it personally. Sometimes the brands have spent their marketing budget for the quarter and sometimes it’s just not a good fit. That’s all part of being a travel creator.

You might also realize you have some money blocks when you have to ask about a campaign budget or send an invoice. So work on your money mindset from the very beginning. There are lots of free resources on YouTube, I also talk about it in the Travel Creator Handbook in the Travel Creator Toolkit .

For me, journaling also really helped to get to the bottom of why I felt resistance to pitching and asking for money. And I still use affirmations every day.

Ask yourself, is the fear greater than your desire for location and financial freedom? Would you regret not just going for it? What do you have to lose?

Don’t keep yourself from following your dreams just because you are embarrassed to be seen at level one. Remember that those who are now on level 100 once started exactly where you are. The only difference between you is that they went for it!

It also doesn’t hurt to speed up the process by manifesting your dream brand partnerships. I manifested a campaign with the tourism board of one of my dream destinations. It’s not a coincidence that my dream tourism board was one of the very first to reach out to me.

Also, prepare for some interesting experiences on the road. Travel doesn’t always go to plan and that’s just how it is. You can check out my take on the advantages and disadvantages of digital nomad life here.

Consistency in your posting schedule, the value you provide and the look of your content are essential as a travel content creator.

You don’t have to post several times a day on all the channels to grow. The most important thing is that your content offers some kind of value. Why should people care about what you post? Mini-travel guides in the caption have done really well for me recently.

Also, I have found the sweet spot for me, between growing and not getting burnt out, is to post 4 reels and 2 carousels a week on Instagram. Plus 4-7 stories six days a week. Then repurpose this on Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest and shorts if you’re on YouTube.

You also get lifetime access to the toolkit and all updates for free (I update and add to it regularly).

Take it from someone who has been a travel content creator since before it even was a thing, and made a lot of mistakes; don’t waste time. Time is the most valuable resource you have, just think where you could be a month or even a year from now if you get started today!

Safety as a content creator

One thing that’s easy to forget on the quest to become a travel content creator is insurance. Remember that regular insurance often won’t cover travel over longer periods of time. And if you decide to go all in as a creator you probably want to stay on the road for as long as possible, especially in the beginning.

Luckily there’s a solution…

✈️ Introducing SafetyWing’s  Nomad Insurance , a travel medical insurance that was created for nomads by nomads.

🌴 The best part about SafetyWing is that you can purchase a policy even if your trip has already started. 185 countries are covered and you don’t need to let them know about your itinerary in advance.

💸 And the second best part is that the insurance is subscription-based, you can pause and resume your coverage with flexibility. No more paying for expensive insurance year-round when you don’t need it!

🤩 It’s perfect for people like me, and maybe soon you, who don’t know where we’ll be next month. You’ll find my complete review  here .

12 steps: How I turned my passion for travel into a career as a travel content creator

Last week I published a blog post about travel content creation and how that leads to blogging passive income (aka, the best way to earn a living ever!)

The response from you guys was amazing and I’ve had so many follow-up questions. The main question being: ‘How do you turn your passion for travel into a career as a travel content creator, copywriter and blog writer?’

I thought it was time to let the cat out of the bag and share a load of truths. Because it wasn’t my passion for travel that led me to creating content, it was my love for creating content that led to travel.

So a bit about my professional background…

  • English was always my best subject at school
  • I studied English Language, English Literature, Media Studies and Business Studies at A-Level
  • I then did English Language and Literature and uni
  • I then travelled for a few years and worked as an online copywriter while I travelled (among other jobs)
  • I then did a journalism NCTJ course
  • Whilst studying for my NCTJ I also had a paid internship as an Editorial Assistant for a travel start-up
  • At this time I became very involved with the travel blogging scene in London
  • I then worked at Flight Centre UK as the Social Media Manager
  • Whilst still working full time, I started my business as a travel writer, copywriter and social media consultant to travel brands. At this point is was my side hustle but I knew this little startup would soon become my full time gig.
  • I then left to blog full time and did extra freelance social media consultancy work to supplement my income (I found this boring but it paid well)
  • I then had my first son and focussed entirely on my blog (and my family!)
  • A few years later I started to pick up more regular writing work, creating content for brand’s blogs and websites as well as my own.

1. I am a content creator before I’m a traveller

What do I mean by this?

I love travelling. LOVE travelling. But I actually love writing about my travels as much as the travels themselves, if not more! I know that probably makes me a bit of a weirdo but that’s the truth.

Looking back on my childhood, I can see I’ve always been a content creator. As a kid I would make my own magazines, I always kept a journal and I had several penpals who received weekly updates about my life! I loved to draw and take photos too. We didn’t have a family video camera but I would have been all over that if we did!

I loved every element of creating. I even loved stationary and I’d always spend my pocket money on smelly gel pens and fancy notebooks.

20 tips for exercising in the morning

I honestly enjoy creating blog posts about everything! I wrote about my morning workout routine last week!

2. I wanted to travel to have adventures to write about

I remember being a young child and writing late-night stories by torchlight in my bed. I got to a point where I couldn’t think of a single thing to write and, rather than put it down to my lack of experience and possible exhaustion as it was long past my bedtime, I thought it was because my life was BORING. I was bored and I was boring and I was feeling boredom in the way only a 10 year old can feel it!

My life needed to be exciting and adventurous and then I’d have lots of exciting things to write about!

And that, my friends, is where my life-changing obsession with travel began!

3. Finding confidence to be ‘a writer’

When I was backpacking, I’d love to spend a day adventuring but the following day I’d be just as happy to sit in my beach hut and write about it on my laptop.

travel content creation jobs

I remember sharing this photo years ago and I had a horrible message from someone basically saying I was a loser for sitting on my laptop while I was in Thailand. I was glued to my screen while I should have been out enjoying the country. That really knocked my confidence for a while and made me question what I was doing. Was writing stopping me from fully enjoying my experience!? Should I be waiting until I get home to write about a place and fully immersing myself in the destination while I’m there?

Thankfully, I now feel confident in myself and I’m happy and proud to be the kind of person who enjoys sitting and writing about my experiences like this!

But you do need to be really into it!

I remember turning down offers to go to parties or have drinks on the beach in favour of sitting alone and blogging. For me, this wasn’t a sacrifice but for many people it would be.

4. I wasn’t paid a penny for years

It’s worth noting that, while I dreamt of a career as some kind of travel content creator, I wasn’t paid a penny for at least four years!. I guest posted on blogs and websites and wrote my own daily blog posts (90% of which went in the trash because they were terrible!)

I then interned with as many websites as I could. These weren’t just travel websites, I interned with fashion, fitness and women’s lifestyle websites too.

5. Internships, internships, internships

I know internships are frowned upon these days because so many of them exploit young people and get them to work for free. There’s also the issue that only wealthy people can complete internships as they can often be 40-hour weeks with no financial reward.

Thankfully, the good thing about writing for online publications is that many internships are also online and can be done flexibly.

I did about 4-5 unpaid internships before getting a paid internship at a travel website in London.

I learnt so much during all of my internships, even the ones that felt pointless at the time. I learnt about SEO and writing for online audiences, about submitting copy, pitching ideas, rearching topics, interviewing people, turning around copy quickly, editing, finding photos to accompany articles and generally working in a professional writing environment. I also learnt a lot just by sitting next to other writers and seeing how quickly other people worked.

One thing that is so important about making a living from writing is being able to do it quickly. Let’s say you’re getting paid £250 to write an article (whether that’s for a client website or your own) and it takes you half a day then you’re making a decent income. But if it takes you all week then you’re going to struggle!

These internships gave me a much-needed confidence boost and the reassurance that this was the career for me. They also gave me the opportunity to attend networking events and start meeting people in the industry because knowing the right people can be half the battle!

travel content creation jobs

6. Writing for small sums of money

After my internships I started pitching to websites and getting paid small sums for my blog articles. And when I say small, I mean tiny!

I honestly don’t see this as a bad thing. You can’t just show up and pitch your articles to a massive travel magazine and expect to be getting £5,000 page spreads straight away. You need to learn how to pitch, hone your writing skills and learn to produce content that magazines or websites actually want.

Of course, not everyone agrees with this and many experienced writers will struggle to find work because there are always newbies on the scene looking to write for less.

This is true but you also have to start somewhere and this method worked for me.

7. Eventually getting noticed

After years and years I was eventually getting noticed and being paid a decent wage for my writing. Woohoo.

This also went hand in hand with my blog really taking off and having more opportunities as a blogger.

travel content creation jobs

Opportunities come in all shapes and sizes, whether it’s a luxury cruise or the chance to learn about wild camping and bikepacking in Wales!

8. How to ‘get noticed’

There honestly isn’t a ‘trick’ for getting to this stage, it really was just plodding along for years and writing hundreds of blog posts for both The Travel Hack and an array of online sites.

OK, ‘plodding’ sounds like it was a chore. It definitely wasn’t a chore, I loved it. I still do!

It wasn’t just the quantity of the posts I was writing but the fact that I learnt something from each post I wrote. It all feels quite obvious now but it’s little things like realising any article with a number in the title performs best! It took me years of trial and error to figure all these things out. Sometimes you’ve just got to write 100 blog posts before everything seems clear!

And if you see anyone jump in the scene and be an ‘overnight success’, just remember that it’s probably not their first attempt.

9. Having a blog is the best way to promote yourself

Now that I’m an established blogger, 99% of my work comes through my blog. I very rarely pitch for any work as my clients find me thanks to The Travel Hack.

When I do pitch for work, I can use my blog as a portfolio to show my clients what I do. This makes the pitching process much easier and having a huge portfolio of written work means I can almost always show them something similar to what they’re looking for.

Having an online presence often means bigger fees too because you’re not just creating content but you’re bringing your audience with you.

You can often charge more for the travel content you’re creating if you can prove your online following will read or watch what you’ve created!

Let’s say a travel startup ask you to write some articles for their website. They currently have no following and no online presence at all. And you can guarantee that 5,000 of your followers will want to read what you’ve written for them, well that’s super valuable for them! That’s 5,000 new eyeballs on their website and potentially new customers for their product.

So in this day and age, it’s really really important to have an online following and establish yourself as a voice of authority.

travel content creation jobs

10. It’ll be easier if you pick a niche within the travel industry

I know lots of content creators don’t like to pigeon hole themselves into one niche as it feels restrictive, but it will actually lead to more opportunities and more work.

If you choose a niche then you can quickly become the expert in one particular field of travel. Yes, there may be fewer opportunities in that one niche but you’re more likely to be chosen.

Many people over-complicate their niche but it’s actually really simple – what are you an expert at? If you spent a year backpacking around Asia then that’s your niche! If you travel with no luggage at all then that’s your niche. If you live in Yorkshire and write about local places then that’s your niche.

Don’t try and think of some fancy niche that will require new skills and lots of research, stick with what you know now and keep writing about it!

11. Small travel brands need content too

When you think about pitching your articles to publications, you’re probably thinking about travel magazines and newspapers and massive online sites. But don’t forget that travel brands need content too.

When I worked at Flight Centre I was responsible for social media and blog content and I regularly used travel bloggers to write posts for the various blogs. If we had a sale on flights to Thailand then I’d ask my team of travel bloggers to write posts about Thailand. This would naturally bring in organic traffic from people researching the country for holiday ideas. These people were our target audience so it was an easy way for me to promote the Thailand flight sale and send our customers over to the sale page.

12. Tips if you want to find ways to make money from your love for travelling

The main thing I want to stress here is that if you’re looking for a way to make money from your love for travelling then being a content creator isn’t the only way.

If your skills and passions lie in writing, photography and video production then yes, content creation is ideal for you.

But if your skills lie in other areas then I’d 100% look into those areas first. You might be an incredible traveller but if you aren’t a good writer then this is going to be a difficult path for you and will constantly feel like an uphill battle.

The Barefoot Nomad has some suggestions for travel jobs but don’t forget that any job you can do remotely (which is a surprising number of jobs thanks to Covid!) can be done while you travel.

Being a content creator as a career

One of the best things about being a content creator is that once you’ve got the skills, you can specialise in any type of content creation.

If you pickup a new hobby or your lifestyle changes then your career can adapt with you.

This blog is a perfect example of that. It used to be back to back travels but now I share more about my family and my life as a mum. I write for my clients about different things like my caravan, paddle boarding and even my new hobby of gardening.

It can be a really flexible career, both in terms of when you’re working and also what you’re working on. You can choose to go down lots of different routes and it’s so exciting!

Having kids as a content creator

I wouldn’t say having children helped my career but it definitely changed the way I worked and REALLY opened my eyes to the industry.

The main thing I learnt was that I could charge for virtually everything.

When I had my first son I had less time on my hands so I’d naturally prioritise my paid work.

I’d email back the brands who’d requested we collaborate with a simple, ‘I’m currently working part time and I’m prioritising my paid work so I can’t work on this right now.’

To my shock, these brands who’d always told me they didn’t have budget would reply with a quick, ‘OK, we’ll pay you then…’

And that was probably the biggest game-changer for me as a content creator!

Really interesting to hear about the journey you've been on to get to where you are today! Your story is very inspiring. Thank you for adding in that it wasn't always glorious and that you had to work hard to become a paid content creator - I think a lot of people forget to mention that bit! I'm currently in Sydney and can't wait until the day when I get to work and travel.

Thursday 10th of February 2022

Love this post. I resonate so much with what you've said. I love to travel but I also like to take photos and write about my experiences. I've had many blogs over the years but I've always been so disheartened with them and never felt like what I was writing was good enough so I always eventually gave up. My husband wants to make videos of our travels / days out and I'd love to get back into writing about them and post them.

When you’re starting this exciting journey, one of your key moves is to select the online platforms where you’ll shine.

We all know the temptation to sign up for every available platform can be real 🫣, especially when you’re just starting. But we advise focusing on just 2 to 3 social media channels.

So, what should you keep in mind when making this choice? Here’s the scoop:

  • Where your audience is. Find out where your potential fans hang out and what platforms they prefer to consume travel content.
  • The type of content that is most consumed these days . During the last few years, short and snappy vertical videos have been all the rage. Does that ring a bell?
  • Where your potential network, collaboration, and business partners are. It’s essential to identify in which social platforms there’s every likelihood that business partners and travel content creators are to make alliances with them.

Therefore, if we were starting from scratch, we would choose two stellar choices (focused on video content). However, you should never discard a blog to boost your reach. 😉

It’s the king of short vertical videos, especially popular among Gen Z. Additionally, you can find new leads and reach a broader travel audience using this platform.

Many travel content creators swear by Instagram for building relationships. Travel brands commonly promote their destinations, accommodations, and other travel services on this platform, making contacting them through direct messages easier. Instagram is also your go-to platform for building an online presence and nurturing your travel community.

🌏 Pro Tip: Before reaching out to travel brands, make sure you stand out from the crowd by actively engaging with their posts through likes and comments. We’ll dive deeper into this topic later.

🛟Life Savers When Recording and Editing Videos

Also, consider these recommendations if you’re a UCG creator and need to edit your videos. These travel video recording and editing tips will save you a lot of time and stress:

🎤 Talk to the Camera and Show Your Personality. What better way to infuse your personality than by showing yourself and speaking directly to the camera? This helps your audience feel more connected to you.

🪩 Integrate Trends (But Don’t Make It All About Them). Trends are fantastic, but they shouldn’t be the sole focus of your content strategy. Mix things up, including informative, educational, funny, relatable, and inspiring content.

📽️ Learn How to Edit Videos and Capture Great Shots. A common mistake made by newbies is filming only from left to right or vice versa. Additionally, to add variety, try capturing moments like sipping wine, enjoying delicious pasta, recording ocean waves, and incorporating this dynamism into your videos. Finally, avoid long pauses to keep your audience engaged.

🤫 Reduce Background Noise. Another critical consideration is eliminating background noise from the beginning, which can disrupt your video’s impact. You can also include a pleasant soundtrack or add a voiceover message.

✏ Polish Your Writing Skills for Captions and Copy . Video creation also involves honing your writing skills, whether you’re adding text to your videos or crafting captions for your social channels.

With these tips, you’re all set to level up your video game and keep your audience returning for more. Check out some real-life examples:

Plus, remember, even as you become a travel pro, you’re not going to be traveling all the time. So here are some ways to make money from traveling as a content creator.  🤩

🤑 Sell Digital or Physical Products

A great way of passive income is by selling digital or even physical products on a virtual store that contains all the resources to offer to your target audience. Some good examples can be:

  • Online Courses
  • Portfolio Templates
  • Printable Templates
  • Travel Ugc Pitch Templates
  • Tourism Board Lists

💡Note: They call it ‘passive income’ for a reason! You can be scaling a mountain in Bali, and these content gems or physical products can fly off the virtual shelves without you lifting a finger.

🤩 Get Into Affiliate Marketing

Amazon favorites, for instance, are a sensation among the online community in the travel industry, especially on sites like TikTok. 🚀 Through Social Media

In today’s world, social media platforms are much more than just places to share content. They’re a great ally when it comes to getting some dollars from it, and of course, thanks to your job as a creator. Whether you’re a travel content creator, travel blogger, travel influencer or UGC creator.

✨How to make money off Instagram : Turn your passion into profit by collaborating with brands, getting sponsored, opening your Instagram shop, and monetizing with video ads. The opportunities are endless!

⚡ How to make money on Twitch : Take the stage as a Twitch affiliate or partner, sell merchandise, seek donations, and go after sponsorships. Your Twitch journey as a travel content creator awaits you!

🌟 What about YouTube : On YouTube, you can earn from brand ads that appear during video views, join the new YouTube Creator Fund, and become a YouTube partner.

💡Lastly, regarding making money on TikTok : You can get direct traffic to your online store, use TikTok shopping to promote your products, or create engaging branded content.

In the following step, we’ll reveal two more ways, so stay tuned! 🚀⤵

This step is a cornerstone in building your presence and unlocking a world of opportunities in the travel industry.

Here, you can have the chance to connect with other creators and reach out to industry professionals, hotels, airlines, and travel brands. So, be sure to follow the steps we’ve outlined above and also the next ones:

@fleur.vonk Learn yourself the skill called (ugc) content creation and eventually the hotels will even reach out to you 🌞✌🏼🛫 #contentcreator #travelcontentcreator #ugccreator #ugcjourney #ugcexample #airbnbcontentcreator ♬ Prada - cassö & RAYE & D-Block Europe

✈ Travel UGC Opportunities

This is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring travel content creators like you! User-generated content (UGC) can be text, video, or images and helps brands promote their products, often incentivizing sales.

In the online world, real people frequently upload authentic videos of themselves trying out or showcasing products from brands they love. The difference is that this content can be freely shared, either for the joy of recommending a product to their audience. Or to earn extra cash, receive free items and services.

This approach is highly popular because sometimes brands can’t create such content in-house and seek talented content creators who align with their purpose, values, and brand fits. Even if you start from free, you gain visibility and the attention of the brands and travel boards you want to work with.

🤩Did you know you can land a sponsored hotel collaboration even with just a few thousand followers? The real secret lies in the value you bring to the table. And often, the quickest way to get noticed is by becoming a user-generated content (UGC) creator and crafting top-notch content.

🤝 Brand Deals or Brand Collabs

And finally, the most juicy and gratifying way to live life as a travel content creator: partnering with your dream travel brands for sponsorships and collaborations.

This is the ultimate goal, where you, as a creator, work closely with a specialized travel brand to create content that promotes destinations, accommodations, transportation, activities, or anything related to the travel niche. Like UGC, you can receive monetary compensation, complimentary stays, or a combination of both.

✨ Therefore, to achieve this way of monetizing, you’ll need to:

🌴 1. Create a Beautiful and Professional Travel Portfolio

Surprisingly, many travel content creators overlook this crucial tool, yet it’s essential when pitching to hotels, tourism boards, and travel brands.

Your travel portfolio will include information about yourself as a content creator. But mainly, it’ll focus on providing real travel examples of your trips and some statistics of the properties or brands you’ve worked with.

Now, you might be wondering, ‘But what if I haven’t even started yet?’ Here’s the secret – even if you’re starting from scratch, you can create a compelling portfolio with the ‘fake it till you make it’ mindset.  How? Simple! You can build case studies based on trips you haven’t been sponsored for – perhaps your next holiday. Imagine any upcoming journey as a paid opportunity and use it to create fantastic travel content that you can proudly showcase in your portfolio. Even a local long weekend getaway or a tourist-like exploration of your own city can kickstart your portfolio journey.

😊💡 Pro Tip:   For helpful visual inspo for your portfolio creation, check out TikTok. Regarding templates, consider browsing Envato Elements .

🤩 2. Send a Great Pitch to Your Dream Companies to Get Sponsored Deals

Now that you’ve created and got your trusty portfolio in hand, it’s time to craft a pitch in writing or video format.

A pitch in the travel world is your golden ticket to show why you’re the perfect fit for that specific travel company and how you can bring value through your content.

😎 Here’s what your pitch should include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Subject line
  • About yourself
  • Details about your audience
  • Why you want to work with them
  • Collaboration ideas
  • Benefits for the brand through your work
  • Deliverables in terms of content pieces
  • Promotion and amplification strategies
  • Compensation and terms

😊 Friendly Reminder

Pitching to your dream travel partners and not hearing back immediately is perfectly fine. But here’s the key – don’t give up! You can follow up and might need to send a gentle reminder 3 to 4 times, as sometimes their accounts are flooded with messages.

But there’s more to it! Make yourself visible, not just in their inbox but also in their feeds. Interact, comment, and show some love by liking their posts. You want to be on their radar.

And if, despite your best efforts, you’re still not getting the responses you desire, it’s time to re-evaluate your pitching strategy. Showcase and highlight the incredible value you bring as a travel content creator. And create a pitch that lets them know why they can’t afford to miss the opportunity to work with you.

🌍 3. How Do You Find Your Next Travel Board or Travel Partner?

It’s 100% sure that browsing the web, you’ll find some seasoned travel content creators generously sharing these valuable resources on their TikTok pages for free. But if you’re searching for a quick and easy solution, we’ve got your back!

Head to Instagram and look for the destination you’re interested in. Look for the official accounts – they usually start with “Visit” or “Explore”—for example, @visitmelbourne .

Or, take a virtual trip to Google and search for “Melbourne tourism board” and open the official page, and they have all the official accounts at the end.

⭐Pro tip : focus on cities rather than whole countries – it’s a smoother ride when reaching out. But remember, before you reach out to travel brands, ensure to:

  • Pick a niche and a sub-niche
  • Create your personal brand
  • Pick your online platforms
  • Produce consistent and top-notch content
  • Work on building a loyal travelers community
  • And prepare to network and collaborate with travel partners

And that’s it! You’re ready to approach those dreamy travel brands, whether it’s an official tourist site, a hotel, an airline, or anything related to travel and tourism.

Working full-time as a travel content creator might seem easy, considering there’s no need for a degree or qualification. However, while the idea of traveling the world and getting paid for it is indeed exciting, the truth is that it requires a lot of effort, dedication, research, and knowledge.

No one said it was going to be easy, but it’s worth it. You need to trust the process and remember that all the prominent travel content creators were once in your shoes, earning nothing in the beginning and even for months. The key is consistency, keeping up with your postings, and maintaining quality throughout your work. In the end, all your efforts will be reflected and pay off.

In the meantime, continue developing your skills, staying informed, and remaining up-to-date to demonstrate that it’s possible to have a job that doesn’t feel like hard work. ✨😊✈

It’s easy to create travel content, but it’s hard to make sure that it reaches the right audience. You can try posting on social media, but unless you’re a huge brand with a lot of followers, you probably won’t get much traction there.

Instead, attach your brand to relevant blogs and influencers who might be willing to write about or promote your product in exchange for a small fee or some sponsorship deal.

This is how companies like Lonely Planet and Airbnb have become so successful. They’ve partnered with thousands of travel bloggers across the globe who are always looking for new places to go and things to see.

Once you’ve put in all the hard work, it’s important not to let your audience slip away. You need to stay relevant and keep them coming back for more! This is where the real magic happens. Hopefully, by now, you’re getting a lot of traffic from search engines, social media platforms, and other websites.

How Much Does A Travel Content Creator Make

The travel content creator profession is a lucrative one.

A travel content creator can generate up to $10,000 per month from their work, and it’s easy to see why. Travel content creators create a wide range of content for their clients, including articles, videos, social media posts, and more.

  • They write about the best places to see in the world and how to experience them.
  • They film breathtaking footage that brings their clients’ destination visions to life.
  • Also, they design stunning graphics to accompany their written content
  • They take beautiful photos that help people imagine themselves on those faraway shores.

In short: if you have an eye for photography or video editing, a knack for writing or creating graphics, or even just a love of sharing travel tips with others, You can make money as a travel content creator!

A travel content creator is someone who produces digital content, such as photos, videos, and written material, about their travel experiences to share with others on social media or other online platforms.

A travel content creator course is a program that teaches skills such as photography, videography, and content creation to help aspiring creators improve their craft and build their brand.

Travel content creator jobs include working for travel companies or brands as a social media manager, content creator, or influencer. Freelance work and self-employment are also common in this field.

Travel content creators often use Instagram as a platform to showcase their work and build a following. They post photos, videos, and stories of their travels and engage with their audience through comments and direct messages.

To become a travel UGC (user-generated content) creator, one should focus on creating content that is unique and engaging, build a following on social media, and collaborate with brands to monetize their content through sponsored posts or partnerships.

Travel content creators can make money through sponsorships, affiliate marketing, advertising, selling digital products or courses, and offering freelance services such as photography or writing.

Travel content creator salaries vary widely depending on factors such as audience size, engagement rates, and types of partnerships or collaborations. Some creators earn a full-time income, while others earn a side income.

The job description of a travel content creator involves producing high-quality visual and written content, building a social media following, collaborating with brands, and engaging with their audience to build a community around their brand.

So there you have it! You now know how to become a travel content creator.

How to Become a Travel Content Creator: The Making of SoloTravelStory

It’s been three years since I changed my blog’s niche from fashion to travel, but it’s only been a year since I’ve taken my new role as a travel content creator seriously. I was clueless in the beginning. My content was mostly fluffy vacation experiences without any substance. It didn’t generate much interest. OUCH! I soon realised that if I was to succeed in this highly competitive niche, I would have to step up my game.

Now that I’ve settled into travel blogging, I feel confident as a travel content creator. In the hope you may find some guidance and inspiration, I’ll share my reflections and key learnings with you on how I run my blog. “The Making of Solo Travel Story” gives you exclusive behind-the-scenes insights, techniques & tools I use to run my blog and how travel writing changed my approach to content creation.

Table of Contents

Is becoming a Travel Content Creator easy?

Yes and No.

Yes, because you can set up a blog right away and start writing about your travels and experiences online. You are the CEO of your travel blog and decide on the content, its style and tone.

No, if you strive for quality content and want your blog to make some money in the long run. Most travel content creators also aim to improve their writing style and bring it to a professional level. This takes practice, practice, practice, some uncomfortable feedback and painful personal growth. Be ready for it!

My Background : I’m trained in journalistic & academic writing. During the past twenty years, I gained tons of professional writing experience in the lifestyle sector & local news reporting. My writing style tends to be informative and complex, although I try to make it more casual. I’m also a MA linguist; research, word structures, and text analysis are my key strengths.

Becoming a Travel Content Creator: Basics

I aim to monetise my blog. Therefore, I had to set it up for success early on. The basics for setting up a travel blog include a brand-worthy name and a reliable host. Keyword research to maximise SEO efforts are another step forward in the travel content creation process.

Blog Name Search

Finding a good blog name that is memorable and brandable is important to the long-term success of your blog. Cool ideas and inspiration may not strike right away, but there are certain techniques that can spark your creativity and help you come up with the perfect blog name.

I would start any blog naming search with the following considerations in mind:

  • The name reflects the niche. It should be clear from the get-go what the blog is about. If the blog is a travel blog, you need to look for words that relate to “travel”.
  • The name needs longevity. It should be snazzy but also age well. Ideally, you will still like the name after many years of blogging. Rebranding a blog and its domain can set you back in your DA and rankings, plus it is costly.
  • The name is professional. Make sure the name is professional, fun and won’t make you stumble or feel embarrassed. Best to say the name out loud and see what vibes. “Hi, I’m Carolin and my blog is Solo Travel Story”. Smooth!

I found my blog name using the techniques of semantic field analysis and mind mapping.

Semantic Field Analysis : the aim is to create a pool and tool kit of words related to “travel” that sound good and inspirational. I started with “airport” and “travel essentials”. Then I listed any words that came to my mind. This brain dump exercise can show you the variety and range of the linguistic corpus that is available to you and help combine words and clusters. From my list, I liked “journey”, “destination”, “check-in”, and “passport”.

semantic field analysis for travel

The first blog name ideas I got from this exercise were:

Destination Next, Status Away, Life Offline, Offline Stories, Destination X

Mind Mapping : I placed “travel” in the centre and then chose 4 to 5 strong words from my semantic field analysis. I would let my creativity lead me and create names through compounding, clipping & blending or expressing concepts.

mind map for travel blog names

This exercise returned the following ideas:

Trip-flair, Xenturalia, Runaway to Adventure, Countdown to Destination X, Escape the Grind, Fly Gemini, Solo to Destination X and finally Solo Travel Story.

A reliable hosting provider can make a big difference and contribute to your blogging success. Creating travel content is time-consuming enough, so you should rely on your host for all technical matters and issues. I am with Lyrical Host and I highly recommend their service. They set me up in no time and I was able to start writing right away. I only focus on creating my travel content and I can count on technical support for any problems. They literally do everything for me in the backend. Errors, faulty coding or displays are fixed and sorted within a few hours.

Finding Your Voice

Other bloggers have consulted me in the past asking for travel publication recommendations. I like doing it, but personally, I don’t compare my travel content creation to travel publications, e.g. National Geographic or Lonely Planet.

The reason for this is that the travel writing of an established publication differs from those of a travel blog. They are professional travel journalists and their writing style is more focused on gripping reports and documentaries.

A travel blog is more personal and informative based on your experience. Readers often have shared interests with you, so they are eager to hear about your activities and recommendations. Plus travel content creators don’t limit themselves to itinerary-style posts only. They also share travel tips, advice or pure travel inspiration.

Make sure to spend some time thinking about your niche, and your writing style. Reflect on what is important to you when you share your travel content. Ask your audience and see what resonates best with them. Try out different formats such as:

– lists

– itineraries

– long-form content (such as this one)

– mostly picture-based content (e.g. Gorlitz – an authentic fairytale town )

– paid collaborations

After two years of travel content creation, my audience loves my coffee culture posts, but I’m also known in the travel community for my Camino hikes and Leipzig promotions. Moving forward I’ll continue to cover these three topics.

Keyword Research

It took me a while to figure this out, but KW research is the bread and butter of quality content. For me as a travel content creator, the KW research not only determines and keeps the focus of my posts; it can also help me identify content gaps and find suitable KWs that my blog can hopefully rank for. How does this magic work? I can hear you ask.

travel content creation keysearch keyword research

I use the ever-so-popular tool “Keysearch”. It does not necessarily spit out the perfect KW but it can show you where the opportunities lie and where the content gaps are. The best KWs are the ones with 70+ Search Volume (SV) and a Competitive Score (CS) of under 30. Especially in the beginning when your own DA is low, you won’t be able to compete with other blogs/websites and rank for KWs that have a higher competitor score. This will obvs change the more quality content you produce and publish on your site.

I also go for long-tail KWs (travel content creators) instead of generic ones (creators). Whilst popular KWs have thousands in SV they are often generic and stand very early in a user’s journey. The more refined the KW, the fewer searches there are but those are the users that have an active intent of buying or visiting a specific place. Therefore they’ll translate into customers and sales.

Top Tip : Focus on producing travel content rather than worrying about the low stats and slow growth – especially in the beginning, this can create a toxic cycle that’s hard to break out of.

Travel Blogger Community

I firmly believe that a blog can only grow with the support of others. Not only do I enjoy talking to like-minded people, but I get to learn from their journey. I took inspiration from other bloggers who shaped my style and layout for Solo Travel Story

Hannah was the first person who introduced me to travel research. I remember reading her post on the photogenic Mont Saint Michel . The mix of personal experience, impressions and informative facts resonated with me and gave me an understanding of a balanced travel blog post.

Caroline’s guides have been a huge orientation for me in terms of text style and formatting. I used her 3 Day in Porto post to find a uniform style with marking links, sections and listing further blog posts. Her consistency resonated with me and I integrated some of her styles for my posts.

Another blogger who shaped Solo Travel Story is Riana . I’m a huge fan of her opinion pieces and travel advice. She knows how to eloquently voice her views and her diplomatic writing style is an art I aspire to learn. Riana is a huge source for me to keep on learning, as I do tend to be very direct when expressing controversial opinions. Some content of hers that I particularly enjoyed is her What to do when you hate a Place post.

travel conference and learning opportunity for travel content creators

Solo Travel Story wouldn’t be the blog it is today without the support of others. I regularly participate in Twitter chats and am an active part of the travel community. I also run two groups of very dedicated members who support each other with quality comments on their blogs.

IRL opportunities are rare, but they can inspire new ideas and help you create travel content. The best way is to build relationships with PRs and marketing teams, but it takes some effort and luck. Always share your posts with these teams and see if they are willing to build a long-term relationship with you. You can get a free press pass for well-known travel fairs such as WTM, ITB or the Berlin Travel Festival. TBX and WITS are travel conferences.

Keep in Mind : Not all conferences and trade fairs are suitable for you. Trade fairs in particular are primarily used for sales and trade. The sales reps may not be particularly receptive speaking to and working with content creators.

Becoming a Travel Content Creator: Research

I had zero clue what travel writing research meant until I was inspired by a fellow blogger. Thanks to her, I made it my goal to create informative posts based on thoroughly researched information. I tend to overdo it and understand that density isn’t everyone’s taste. I’m still learning and aware that I write a personal travel blog and not a scholarly encyclopaedia entry.

When I travel to a destination, I go on a mission. This is a specific topic that I have in mind when creating my travel content. This way I stay focused on the topic and can use my time at the destination effectively. Before I travel, I have an idea for possible content, but I keep checking back on Keysearch to spot potential gaps. The insights from the KW research give me context and understanding of what I want to investigate at the destination, e.g. when it comes to exploring coffee culture, I research popular coffee shops from various sources and check keyword stats.

Top Tip : Have a mission, but also allow the story to come to you. It sometimes happens that the topic develops by itself; best to keep an open mind and give the topic the time and space for that. Example: my no-nonsense guide to pastel de nata cafes in Porto . I knew I wanted to review pasteis de natas in Porto, but I didn’t want to write a mere comparison. I spiced up my reviews with the “no-nonsense” angle giving them an honest insight into the café scene of Porto with facts and research beyond the pasteis tasting.

Research Tools

During my research phase I consult different sources. After a while, the same names of popular cafés or those to avoid pop up. I use this filter method as a guide, then create my list and add my self-researched cafés to choose from, e.g. for a coffee tour, I look at 10-15 cafés (depending on how long I stay there).

Top Tip : I use voice notes (VN) and flexible notebooks to document my thoughts. My travel content will later write itself down as I type and transcribe my recordings. I add all sorts of information, observations and insights. My notebooks are empty so I can focus fully on my thought process.

Research Supporters

Some destinations have tourist information centres for selling tours only. Whereas others, e.g. Vienna, have information centres to educate visitors. I prefer those and consult these centres for my research. Here I pick up additional material such as books, random facts, leaflets, brochures & local recs. Be careful with the latter though as tourist information centres have an interest in pushing certain businesses (which may not be the best fit for you).

travel content research material

Reliable Tourist Information Centres from My Travels:

Vienna – City Information at the city hall, Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz 1

Brussels – Information desk at Halles Saint-Gery

Quality Material

My research is drawn from external material and based on time spent experiencing the destination.

Example Vienna : Guilty of it in the past, but moving forward I’ll refrain from writing itineraries based on one time visit knowledge. I don’t like to label something as “the best” when I’ve only been there once. I feel I can make a better judgement when I revisit experiences/destinations and provide expertise to the reader by sharing a time efficient itinerary. Building credibility and trust is very high on my list.

For my 4 Day Vienna itinerary , I:

  • Visited multiple times 3x
  • Stayed for 3 months
  • Took part in countless popular & local experiences & reviewed them
  • Revisited some experiences for a second & third impression
  • Collected additional information at the Tourist Information Centre
  • Researched and visited highly recommended cafes
  • Read two books on Vienna
  • Explored neighbourhoods beyond the traditional sightseeing

For my coffee posts, I try to provide a representative sample of 10% (usually around ten experiences) and spend substantial time at a place before publishing content with a specific focus.

Example: Brno Café Culture | Time Spend in Brno 1 week

To write a 3k word post on Brno’s coffee culture I:

  • Read an entire book on Brno cafés
  • Went on a 2h guided city tour on cafés
  • Researched the best cafés from various publications
  • (Re)visited 10+ cafes to do my own research
  • Attended a coffee tasting
  • Consulted tourist info

Becoming a Travel Content Creator: Writing

Writing is a skill that can be learned but requires regular practice. I did this during my studies and also worked as a freelance journalist at the time, so I know the different writing styles. I personally prefer informative content with advanced vocabulary, so my writing style is complex. My audience seems to like it. So it’s all about finding your own voice and figuring out what works well for you. Try out a few content forms and see what works best.

I start by structuring my ideas on paper and when I have a rough outline, I create a first draft. I never write directly in WordPress and use Google Docs, although I often get a lot of impressions while writing and find it more convenient to take notes by hand. My posts are rarely finished in one go. I often leave the draft for a few days and then examine it with new eyes. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information and ideas I want to contribute, so it’s no wonder that creating most of my travel content takes a long time. My content is typically between 3,000 and 6,000 words.

My final draft will go through a Grammarly check. I also use Google Translate which helps me to structure my sentences more naturally, as English is not my first language.

When I first started creating travel content, I focused on fluffy vacation stories. I used a lot of platitudes and irrelevant phrases. My mistake was that I focused too much on myself and didn’t keep my audience in mind.

Example Hotel Review : there’s personal experience “My dreams were vivid that night, making me toss and turn in my bed for hours” vs personal experience “The hotel rooms are equipped with king sized beds and each has a Coco-Mat branded mattress. I tell you they are insanely comfy!”

To add more value to the text and travel experience, I established criteria. This allows for transparency and may help my readers to also find their travel style, e.g. if I claim something to be “the best” then I share my criteria for evaluation and base of assessment. What I may label as “the best” may not be “the best” to you.

Another question which has helped me during the drafting stage is “would I read my own post?”. What would I like to know about e.g. 3 Days in Riga? What would I find attractive or valuable enough to justify reading the content? I would focus on and structure my travel content (aka itinerary post) as followed:

1. Motivation for the visit

2. Cost and Spend

3. How to get from the airport to Riga centre

4. Where to stay in Riga

5. Potential activities for Day 1, Day 2, Day 3

6. How long does the activity last, what did I get out of visiting this specific activity, was it worth my time? What can I learn? What did this cost me? Basically answer the question will my resources (time, money, efforts) receive a return on investment (ROI).

7. Café & Dinner suggestions

8. My impression of Riga

keyword research spotting travel content opportunities

Travel Content Creation: Clustering

As a travel content creator, I thrive to not only share my travel experiences and hope to inspire others, I want readers to come back and check out more of my content. I’m aiming to produce enough content around one destination so I can build clusters.

I usually write niche posts first (specific posts) and then create a parent post (summary) which includes links to the niche topics. By the time the parent post is published, I’ll have enough niche content to link up to so the reader stays longer on site.

Becoming a Travel Content Creator: Promotion

The promotion of my travel content is quite time consuming. To speed up the process, I keep a record of all promo content ever created so I can just copy and paste.

Organisation

I keep a spreadsheet with all of my previous promo tweets. I then only copy and paste these into Tweetdeck . This way, I won’t have to come up with brand-new tweets every time. For each blog post, I got approximately 3 to 4 different promo tweets at the ready and use them in rotation.

travel content creation excel for promo tweets

Learning & Other Blogging Resources

I don’t really consult blogging resources to improve my content. When I do this, I do it because I want to find out how other bloggers “do” it, but honestly, most people are great at SEO and just know how to (ab) use the system. So I don’t really attach too much importance to them.

As mentioned, I’ve attended quite a few travel conferences in the past, but these tend to be very cliché and can make you feel crappy if you don’t have the big numbers (yet). Fortunately, there are also online offers, such as the Blogger Breakthrough Summit , which takes place in February. It’s an online learning opportunity with fellow travel influencers, and while most use the platform to promote their products, the sessions do have their value. Always keep an open mind, but keep questioning this whole wild ride that is the blogging journey.

Key Take-Aways for Becoming a Travel Content Creator

  • There is a very, very small market in which personal experience & travel narrative blogs do well. The majority of travel content out there is information-based content that sells and brings in the $$.
  • Quality travel content creation requires determination, creativity and tons of personal time. Don’t underestimate the efforts that go into travel content creation and don’t get disheartened if the ROI takes a while.
  • SEO is a holistic interplay of various factors, onsite optimization, about me pages and even social media.
  • Itinerary KWs are often favoured by Google over “things to do” lists (higher SV).
  • Your blogging journey needs the support of other travel content creators. The community is friendly and supportive. Do reach out if you struggle.

FAQs on how I became a Travel Content Creator

I understand this is quite a lengthy post and you may have some quick questions about how I became a travel content creator. You can, of course, always come back to any section of my post and read in more detail what you’d need for your blog. If you have questions or need help, please get in touch and I’m happy to assist.

Do you travel somewhere with a clear blog post plan in mind, or formulate the post based on your experience, with no or minimal plan?

I usually travel with a mission, as it helps me to stay focused. One area that I always explore is coffee culture & local cafés, but I also like to let a story come to me. This can happen when I research in tourist information centres or find other interesting activities whilst I’m at the target destination. I never structure a post beforehand and do the research first hand at the destination.

This was such a great post, Carolin! Thank you so much for including me and your kind words. You’ve actually gone my gears turning for another opinion piece I want to work on. I do admire how much research you put into your posts and all of the organization you do. Inspiring! Lots to learn here for sure.

' src=

This was a really good insight into the way you create your posts, and if I was asked what three niches you write around I’d have absolutely chosen cafes, Camino and Leipzig (possibly pasteis de nata too!). I’m impressed with your methodological approach, and was wondering if you have any tips for frequency of posting content? Glad you didn’t go with the name “Xenturalia”!

' src=

Great inspo, Carolin! It’s so interesting to learn about your educational background and your research/writing process. It’s no wonder your posts are so thorough! Looking forward to reading more interesting and informative posts from you 🙂

I found this post fascinating and wish I had read it *before* I started blogging! It was really good to understand your thought process when developing your extensively researched and very thorough articles. Lots of great tips as well, especially on keyword research, blog promotion and organisation. You’re absolutely right that blogging is a journey. There’s always something new to learn. And the travel community is very lovely and hugely supportive. Thank you – the post is both interesting as well as very useful!

' src=

This is a very thorough and inspirational piece of work and I’ve learned a lot reading through it. Some great tips on how to be a blogger and progress through the stages and what to think about. Interesting to read about your academic and journalistic past ,as I was not aware of that at all. It’s a post that I shall be referring back to as I progress through the stages and need some extra inspiration and thoughts

Fabulous post and a very interesting look at your process and evolution. I enjoyed picking up some tips and inspiration. SEO research is an area I need to continue to develop. Your words about blogging being a journey is so true — the ups and downs make it a real adventure at time. I agree that the blogging community is supportive and warmly welcoming — how I found you!

' src=

Talking about methodology and coming up with an appropriate blog name, this is totally on a different level Carolin 😉 You really pulled-out all the semantics and tricks and approached it almost like science. Your post made me think of my first blog name – LipBum then later turned to Flying Baguette. The blogging journey is like travel in itself don’t you think? We all start from small steps and then giant leaps thereafter 😉

I was so naive when I first started blogging, directionless too. I should have taken SEO more seriously earlier. Since then I have tried out different styles of posts to see what works best and what I enjoy writing, which is ultimately when a post seems to do well – when I’m enjoying writing it. It’s always fun to see how far you’ve come, I’m sure you feel the same way. Research is key though, I love attributing fun experiences now to Research. The perks of being a travel blogger

' src=

I’m always fascinated by other blogger’s experiences of the writing process. Someone I know once expressed surprise at how long it took me to write a blog post, from the initial idea to hitting the publish button and seemed proud of the fact that he could write a post in 30 minutes. Admittedly not travel but still… I’ll leave you to guess at the quality of his writing. 🙄

A very thorough post, Carolin. It is exactly what every beginning content creator needs to know. When I first started my travel blog for older women, I was guilty of writing mainly fluffy personal experience posts, basically personal essays. I seldom do that anymore, since I want both to inform my readers and make some money. BUT…once in a while, I simply have an idea for a post I want to write. There are no good keywords. The readership is likely to be small. But I wanted to write it. So I did. And a couple of those posts have ended up ranking at #1 for a few KWs and phrases. Go figure. Thanks for this thoughtful and deep look at your process.

' src=

This is so cool! I love the graphics associated with the post in helping to understand the process. The post is extremely well structured, realistic and extremely useful information. I thought the idea of organization in promoting the content was spectacular, I will definitely use it! In fact I will save this post for inspiration. Keep going with your awesome work Carolin, You are an inspo!

' src=

I loved reading this, creating travel content definitely isn’t as easy as some people believe it to be is it! Your posts are always so wonderful 🙂

Carina | bucketlist2life

The amount of work you put into a blogpost is absolutely mind blowing. I often think I’m already ahead of the curve by only writing about places I have really visited. I sometimes struggle with the dichotomy between traveling for myself and traveling for the blog. How do you manage?

' src=

Great Post, we are similar with the blig researcg missons in destinations. Henry drags me far and wide to find anything dog friendly everywhere we go…

' src=

What a great way to look at it and look back along the journey. I related to a lot of what you said, and I hope more people read this because so many people think its easy and not a lot of work -but it really is!

Thanks for sharing these tips in becoming a travel content creator, I did not realise when I moved niches how much work it would involve to write one post, including SEO which I’m pretty clue less about doing, and all the money that I need to fund it all which never seems to be there, hopefully these tips shall help me 🙂

Amy Seder is a travel social media influencer and content creator who specializes in creating lifestyle and travel films and images for some of the largest brands in the world, including Hard Rock Hotels, Hilton and St. Regis. Amy is the co-founder of Away Lands , a blog and production company specializing in photography and creating short films about lifestyle and travel, showcasing a heightened and curated reality.

Amy joins the podcast to discuss her best advice on how to get started as a content creator and how to land your first clients. She also shares her story of how she and her fiancé, Brandon, grew Away Lands together. As well as how they went full time with it, how they’ve landed projects with brands, and so much more.

How did you become a travel influencer and content creator?

“What seems to be a unique story, getting into social media,” Amy begins, “Is I actually came from a commercial photography world. That’s kind of how it happened for me. I started getting interested in photography and video when I was 14. So in my first year of high school, I saved up my funds, to buy this teeny digital camera.”

“I don’t exactly know how I knew I was going to move to NYC and do fashion photography. I just knew that’s what I wanted to do.”  Amy took her first photography classes in the community college in her home town. Following high school she went straight to photography school, with a commercially focused program. “After that, I built a portfolio and moved to New York. I realized that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or how to get a job. As a photographer, it’s all freelance and as a very young person, it was really overwhelming. It took me a number of years, but I made it through.”

In the episode, Amy shares more of her story behind trying to navigate the fashion photography world in NYC.

She came to realize that “To be a fashion photographer in the commercial industry, it had to be your be-all-end-all. If you didn’t put every ounce of yourself and everything you had into then it wasn’t going to happen.”

So, Amy decided to take a step back. “I had a day job that was paying the bills, and on the weekends enjoyed my life for a while. I started dating Brandon, my now fiancé about 6 years ago. From the time that we started dating, we started traveling and taking photos just for fun. For us it just kind of happened so organically. I didn’t start traveling until I was like 25.”

“We made a trip to Hawaii; my brother was living there at the time. This was very early, I think 2015. I remember seeing a couple of kinds of travel videos on YouTube, but the whole thing hadn’t hit yet! I’d always been playing with video but didn’t really do much or know much about it. We just shot around and then came home and started editing. Very shortly after we started getting all our gear and just jumped in. We were booking our first big trips and it was kind of our hobby, that we were doing outside of work.”

How to Become a Professional Travel Content Creator

Looking back, do you think having formal training is necessary for someone wanting to become a content creator?

“Necessary? No, absolutely not” Amy shares. “Going to college is important, and obviously not everyone has to do that but it is a very definitive time in your life. For me, I just knew I wanted to do photography right out of high school. It was a bit of a different era at the time. Everything can be learned online now if you have the motivation and dedication to learn everything yourself.” Amy shares in the podcast the benefits of pursuing a formal education, and how it helped her, particularly as someone who wanted to do more commercial photography. On top of this, she shares the power of practicing and creating for yourself, regardless of education and how your content is what’s important for networking and selling yourself.

How did your first Paid deal come about?

“Our first brand deals were not social posts. For us, way before I was getting paid for anything on IG or Social we were getting paid to make videos.” In the episode, Amy shares how when they started, she cold emailed hundreds of hotels ahead of their trip to South East Asia; pitching videos in exchange for stays.

“The first thing that happened after that trip, was a Sri Lankan hotel chain emailed us and said ‘We have 8 properties, and we’d like you to come out and shoot all of them!’ We were like, ‘This is cool, but this needs to be a whole separate trip, and you would need to pay for it now.’ So we ending up going to Sri Lanka, traveling the entire country for two months, and shooting every property! We totally undersold and overworked ourselves.”

Amy the co-founder of Away Lands

Do you have a formula for charging for someone who is a more intermediate photographer or content creator?

“Pulling numbers is really difficult,” Amy admits, “But you can kind of think about how many hours this is going to take of your time. How much do you want to make an hour is one way to work backward on that. Then you have to compare that to what going rates are.”

“It’s always a difficult discussion, coming up with what’s an appropriate amount, but there are some of the norms. On Instagram, it’s like $1000 per 100,000 followers, at a high end for a lot of projects. But if someones asked ‘How about you do a post and 10 extra images,’ then you need to add on more for that.”

Tune into this episode of HLBD to hear more of Amy’s formulas for charing clients and usage fees, as well as her tips for pitching, how to use Content Creation as an alternative income stream as an Influencer, Amy’s plans for 2020 and so much more!

Looking For Content Creators Who Will Cross Deserts For You?

Kicking off our list is a luxury travel content creator who loves showcasing the different cultures of the places she travels to.

Cacinda Maloney – @pointsandtravel

Cacinda Maloney IG content | Travel creators on Afluencer

Based in Arizona, USA, Dr. Cacinda Maloney is all about travel and wears many hats! This Doctor-turned-full-time-Travel-Expert (so that’s Dr. Travel Expert to you) is the owner and operator of a travel and lifestyle blog – Points and Travel. She’s also a brand ambassador and a digital content creator.

Cacinda is a self-proclaimed knower of the difference between luxury travel worthy of the high price tag and places that are just plain expensive. Her travel days look a little something like this – adventure and culture by day, smart luxury at night!

She documents all this perfectly in her blog – which is meticulously organized to help readers find posts by destination.

Over on her Instagram, you’ll find beautiful pictures of her travels. Cacinda is always sure to leave a good description of the captured moment – even if there are grizzly bears nearby!

Her Facebook page mostly features attention-grabbing images with links to recipes, blog posts, and itineraries. On Twitter, you can find the same format, but never a repeat of posts. In total, Cacinda has over 164k followers across her social media pages. As a Brand, you may want a luxury travel content creator who knows how to adapt their content for each social media platform – and Dr. Cacinda is certainly one of them.

Emily Inson – @thealmostvanlife

Emily Inson Instagram winter posts

Emily – a single female doing whatever she wants – is an advocate for people to do whatever makes them happy! She is also a social media manager and body-positive content creator sharing her journey of self-discovery. Early in 2021, she made the decision to buy a camper van and now travels throughout North America with her dog/ sidekick/ co-pilot @martytheminidoxie and hasn’t looked back!

Whichever video you choose to watch first on Emily’s social media pages, be it Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, one of the first things you’ll notice is Emily’s amazing personality. You really can’t help but smile.

Another awesome thing about Emily’s travel content is how real it is. Whether she’s showing you coin-operated showers at a campsite; getting work done while parked in a Walmart parking lot; or simply showing you “a day in the life” you can be sure that Emily is going to give it to you straight.

When it comes to Collabs, Emily is not afraid to put herself out there. She’s even asked her followers to help her become a travel partner for Airbnb. We love a content creator who has no shame in scoring in the Collab game! Did we mention she has a terrific engagement rate of 5.3%? We love Emily’s approach to her life and her travel content creator career. You don’t want to miss out on this one.

Joanna’s target market is professional millennial women who love to travel. As a professional herself, this clearly makes sense. Through her content, from the Caribbean to Paris, you get the sense that Joanna is just living her best life.

Can we talk about her fashion posts for a second? Her chosen outfits are simple, chic, and sophisticated. She does a great job of posting outfit details, as well as giving us some vacation looks too.

  • Checking your insurance policy
  • How to travel cheaply using miles rewards
  • Always use a virtual private network (VPN)
  • Never keep your credit cards and cash in the same place
  • Highlighting new travel rulings her followers may have missed

We also love how Jay shares her own travel mistakes – so you don’t have to make them yourself! Jay really has her followers’ backs.

Whether she’s flying, driving, on a cruise, bus, on a train, or hiking, Jay’s content is always insightful and inspiring, and she always keeps it real.

One more tip from Jay Quinn – take that solo trip! Sometimes there will be no one to travel with. Travel anyway!

Katie is another travel content creator who is a believer in exploring the state or country you’re in. While she was in Puerto Rico, she took us around and helped us #discoverpuertorico alongside her. Now, she’s in Florida and not only showing us around the state but taking us to other destinations in the USA as well.

She can also assist with travel itineraries… more information about that is on her website.

When it comes to Collabs, Katie has experience with that too and is keen and ready to add more to her portfolio… could it be your brand up next?

We’re loving these #couplegoals. Plus, they’re inspiring other young people to get out and explore new places, even if it’s within walking distance from their homes.

This couple’s focus is on exploring Sydney as well as smart travel in Australia in general. We’ve mentioned before that sometimes you don’t need to leave your city or country in order to indulge in your passion for travel. Sometimes hidden gems are right around the corner. Alisha and Blesson show us exactly that through their content.

They give suggestions on what to do in certain towns or places (we’re talking long lists), ideas for date nights, and even restaurants to visit. They pretty much cover all bases so your weekends will be booked for a long time to come.

The lovely couple has secured quite a few Collabs and we have a feeling they’re only getting started.

Wow! What a round-up of travel content creators! What do we love about them? Other than their travel-inspiring content that is expertly blended with other interests, they are all pouring out large quantities of positivity. What a happy bunch! 5 reasons why lower taxes mean better deals for consumers and retailers

Individuals doing taxes.

On Tax Day, NRF finds it opportune to reflect on the immense benefits that the lower individual and corporate tax rates ushered in by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act have had on both consumers and retailers alike.

Individual tax reductions have injected vitality into the pockets of millions, fueling consumer spending and bolstering the economy. Simultaneously, the corporate rate adjustments from the TCJA have catalyzed investment and economic expansion, fostering innovation and job creation.

Read NRF’s latest press releases, reports and blog posts on the  economy  and the retail industry.

According to a notable economic study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the repercussions of a higher corporate tax rate would reverberate significantly onto consumer prices, with a third of any tax increment being borne by consumers in the form of elevated prices.

Here is how lower tax rates from the TCJA have permeated and invigorated both consumers and retailers alike across the economic spectrum.

Empowering consumer spending

Lower individual tax rates have increased disposable income throughout the economy, increasing consumer spending on goods and services, including retail purchases. Increased consumer spending has driven demand, leading to higher sales for retailers across the country. It has been a win-win situation — a higher standard of living for consumers and higher sales for retailers.

Catalyzing job creation and retail employment

The retail industry is a major contributor to job creation, employing millions of Americans across the country. With a globally competitive tax rate from TCJA, retailers have been able to expand their operations, open new stores and invest in their workforce. This has led to more job opportunities for retail associates, providing more opportunities for stable employment and growth within the industry.

Nurturing small businesses

Small retailers are the backbone of the local economies, and they all benefit from lower taxes. TCJA tax rates have helped small businesses reinvest in their enterprises, upgrade infrastructure and better serve their communities. This has resulted in a more vibrant retail landscape, offering consumers a variety of choices and contributing to the unique character of every neighborhood.

Fueling economic growth and prosperity

A thriving retail sector is a key contributor to overall economic growth and prosperity, and a globally competitive corporate tax rate has helped the retail sector thrive. When retailers prosper, they pay higher wages, invest in employee training and contribute higher tax revenue through sales and corporate taxes. A strong retail industry benefits the entire economy, increasing economic prosperity for millions of Americans.

Fostering competitive pricing and innovation

TCJA tax rates have encouraged research and development and driven innovation within the industry. From technological advancements to improved customer experiences, innovation spurred by lower corporate taxes benefits both consumers and retailers alike.    With all these reasons in mind, NRF strongly supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that has been so incredibly helpful in propelling both consumers and the retail industry toward sustainable growth and prosperity, serving as a catalyst for economic expansion. TCJA tax rates have meant more resources for consumers to spend, while also enabling retailers to invest in their businesses and contribute to the overall economy, making the American dream more tangible with every purchase.

Climate Strategies and Deep Uncertainty

Job Creation and Decarbonization Synergies in Latin America: a Simulation-based Exploratory Modeling Analysis Provisionally Accepted

  • 1 Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School, United States
  • 2 Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), Mexico
  • 3 RAND Corporation, United States
  • 4 Inter-American Development Bank, United States

The final, formatted version of the article will be published soon.

This study employs an Input-Output simulation model to assess the potential employment effects resulting from investments in 40 sector-specific decarbonization transformations across Latin America and the Caribbean. Using a Multi-region Input-Output framework (Eora26), our findings indicate that investments in energy production and buildings sectors offer promising job creation opportunities, averaging 5.5 total jobs per $1 million invested. Similarly, in the waste, industry and agriculture, forestry, and land use sectors demonstrate significant potential, yielding approximately 5 total jobs per $1 million. The analysis models investments as demand vectors, producing results for 17 countries in the region. These estimates endogenize the diverse economic structure and state of development of these countries. We argue that country-level analysis is needed to identify climate strategies that maximize job creation while achieving net-zero emissions.
