Pittsburgh is a great city with so many things to do all year. But, sometimes, you want to get out and explore some other places. It’s okay. We understand!

Where should you venture when you want a getaway from Pittsburgh?

There are SO MANY options, all within just a few hours’ drive from the city.

What makes us experts? Well, we both grew up in western Pennsylvania, just outside of Pittsburgh. We’ve explored most of these locations more times than we can count over the years, so we feel great about sharing each of these recommendations with you.

What Makes a Good Weekend Trip from Pittsburgh?

We think that a good weekend trip requires no more than 4-5 hours of driving . Typically, with those on the longer end of this range, we’d even recommend a long weekend of at least 3 days.

Anything shorter than 1.5 hours could be explored in a day trip , but this list includes a wide variety of locations and distances. Hopefully, it will at least inspire a starting point for your next weekend getaway.

One thing we really like about many of these places to visit near Pittsburgh is that they can be enjoyed any time of the year.

These destinations are all driveable, and for most of them, having a car to get around once you’re there is a good idea.

Compiling this list was seriously tough! It became overwhelming when we sat down to think of all the great places within only a few hours’ drive from the city. Basically, we could have had 50+ spots here with great reasons to visit each one.

Stay in the State of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is full of places to see and things to do. Check out some of these spots, some very well-known and some more off the beaten path.

1. The Laurel Highlands

Drive Time: 1 hour 20 minutes Distance: 70 miles

The Laurel Highlands is a scenic, mountainous region in Western Pennsylvania that’s perfect for a weekend getaway from Pittsburgh.  The drive time is only about 1 hour and 20 minutes, and the area offers plenty of things to do.

The star of the show in the Laurel Highlands is definitely Ohiopyle State Park . Discover beautiful waterfalls , and hike great trails like Jonathan Run and the Ferncliff Loop.

In addition to Ohiopyle, other great state parks nearby include Laurel Hill and Laurel Ridge.

Ohiopyle is also a popular whitewater rafting destination close to Pittsburgh.

The tallest point in the state of Pennsylvania is located nearby in the Laurel Highlands: Mount Davis. If you’re trying to visit the tallest point in this or every state, this is a must-visit.

During the winter months, we think Seven Springs is a great place to satisfy your winter sports adventures on the mountain. You can ski, snowboard, or tube your way down the mountain.

Drive Time: 2 hours Distance: 128 miles

Erie is a great place to visit for a getaway weekend.  It’s located in the very northwestern corner of Pennsylvania, and it’s only about 2 hours from Pittsburgh! Erie has plenty of things to do and see during every season.

The city has a rich history with ties to Lake Erie that dates back centuries. Enjoy the historic tall ships or millionaires’ row of mansions right downtown.

Outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing, and boating are great ways to enjoy Presque Isle State Park and nearby Erie Bluffs State Park .

Stay for the sunset at Presque Isle and watch from one of the park’s beaches. We think it’s easily one of the best places to watch a sunset in the Great Lakes region .

If you’re looking for some indoor fun, enjoy the Erie Art Museum, shop at the Millcreek Mall, or catch a show at Kellar’s comedy club and magic bar. Some pretty big names have performed on the small stage at Kellar’s.

After spending the day exploring, visit one of the many great local restaurants. There are so many options that it’s hard to go wrong. Some of our favorite spots include The Cork, BrewErie, and Pineapple Eddie’s, among others. These are just a few!

3. Pine Creek Gorge

Drive Time: 4 hours Distance: 228 miles

The Pine Creek Gorge is the jewel of the northern part of the state. It’s an amazingly scenic and diverse destination. It’s an under-the-radar weekend trip from Pittsburgh!

The star attraction in this region is sandwiched between Colton Point and Leonard Harrison State Parks. It’s the gorge with the river below, known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon .

Hiking, biking, boating, and backpacking are all popular things to do in the area. You’ll want to spend all day exploring and enjoying the many trails and views. The West Rim Trail in the PA Grand Canyon is one of our favorite weekend backpacking trails in Pennsylvania at about 30 miles long.

The area is also filled with small towns, great places to eat, spots for shopping, and outdoor activities like kayaking.

Visit nearby Hills Creek State Park for more hiking and water adventures in the park’s lake. In the winter, you’ll see plenty of ice fishing happening out on the lake.

4. Gettysburg

Drive Time: 3 hours 30 minutes Distance: 185 miles

Located only about 3 hours and 30 minutes away from Pittsburgh, Gettysburg has a lot to offer, and it’s worth the drive. You’ll find all sorts of things to do in Gettysburg, and it’s a perfect destination for history buffs.

Check out sites like the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and the History Center. Then go out and explore the battlefields for a window into the events that occurred during the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War.

We learned so much by playing the virtual tour videos from the NPS at each stop through the battlefields drive.

There are also plenty of places to go hiking nearby, including Pine Grove Furnace and Caledonia State Parks. Take a nighttime ghost tour if you’re into the paranormal.

Other things to do in Gettysburg include shopping and visiting wineries! So many quaint little shops with unique items are scattered throughout the streets of the town.

Gettysburg is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a weekend getaway, although you can certainly spend more than just a weekend exploring!

5. State College

Drive Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 136 miles

State College is a great driveable spot near Pittsburgh with a more small-town feel. This university town still offers all sorts of fun for both visitors and locals.

Whether it’s exploring the historic sites or grabbing some grub at one of the many restaurants, there is something to do in State College every day of the week. We always make sure to stop at the Berkey Creamery for some delicious ice cream when we’re in town.

Outdoor activities are popular, too. Wander through the arboretum at Penn State or hike up Mount Nittany . Play a round of golf at one of the beautiful courses. Take a tour through Penn’s Cave . There are even a few spots nearby for afternoon wine tasting.

Visit during particular fall weekends, and you’ll see the town transform. Football games are a big deal in these parts, and people come from far and wide to cheer on their Nittany Lions. So much so, that on these weekends, State College turns into one of the largest cities in Pennsylvania. It’s definitely a sports experience you should have at some point in your life.

On top of that, this small town has a lot to offer when it comes to shopping and entertainment. For those who love culture and art, don’t miss out on visiting any museums or galleries.

6. Benezette & Elk County

Drive Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 129 miles

Benezette is a small town about 2.5 hours from Pittsburgh, and there are plenty of things to do for visitors. This is certainly a more laid-back escape than some of the others on this list.

One of the best attractions in Benezette is seeing elk! Elk roam free on the hillsides surrounding the town, and it’s a great opportunity to see these large animals in a natural setting on the east coast.

Plan this as a fall getaway when the leaves are changing and the elk are in the rut. You’ll be in for a real treat.

Hike the nearby state forest trails, and you might get even closer to them, but not too close! Always maintain 100 yards between you and the elk for yours and the animals’ safety.

You can also enjoy some fishing or take a scenic drive through the area if that’s what you prefer!

7. Lancaster

Drive Time: 3 hours 50 minutes Distance: 238 miles

Lancaster, PA is a historic and charming area located about three hours and fifty minutes from Pittsburgh. Lancaster offers plenty of things to do for visitors and locals alike, but life’s pace is much slower than that in the city.

Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities like hiking or fishing, or indoor fun at the museums, there is something for everyone in Lancaster!

In addition to all these wonderful attractions, the area also has a lot of restaurants where you can taste the local flavors of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. You’ll never go hungry here with this delicious home cooking.

Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine is a mixture of German and Dutch elements. These foods emphasize meat, potatoes, cornbreads/biscuits, cabbage dishes with pork or beef sausages; fresh loaves of bread; apple pies; pretzels; and scrapple.

8. The Poconos

Drive Time: 4 hours 30 minutes Distance: 279 miles

If you’re looking for a more adventurous weekend getaway, the Poconos are a great option! This area is located about four hours and thirty minutes from Pittsburgh.

It’s quite a large area, so you could easily spend a long weekend exploring the Poconos and still not do everything you want.

Outdoor activities include hiking, biking, watersports, and golfing during the summer. Check out the nearby Ricketts Glen State Park Waterfall Trail for a real treat! There are over 20 waterfalls along the trail.

You can also enjoy some time at the casino or take a trip to one of the area’s many water parks. Indoor fun includes visiting the various museums and theaters or simply relaxing at the spa. In the winter, it is a ski and snowboard destination.

A trip to the Poconos is truly an adventure, whether you prefer relaxing or being active. While it is a little further drive, it is well worth the time and effort.

Drive Time: 50 minutes Distance: 33 miles

If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, Butler County may be just what you need to explore. Although it’s one of the closest destinations on this list, and you might be wondering why it made the cut, there are plenty of hidden gems here.

About fifty minutes or so from Pittsburgh to the north, there are plenty of outdoor activities as well as indoor fun. Hiking is plentiful in nearby McConnells Mill and Moraine State Parks . Sections of the North Country Trail travel right through both parks.

Shopping and dining options give you some variety that is different from the city. A few craft breweries, wineries, and local restaurants serve up delicious treats.

Numerous festivals are held in Butler every year, too. The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival attracts Jeep enthusiasts from all over the country to the area for a weekend of on and off-road fun. I love my ’97 TJ and make it a point to attend every year.

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway that doesn’t require a lot of time, driving, or effort to reach, heading just north to Butler County is an easy trip.

10. Philadelphia

Drive Time: 4 hours 50 minutes Distance: 304 miles

Philadelphia is such a historic city with plenty to do, whether you plan to spend a week or one day in Philadelphia . It’s also the place where American independence was first declared, so history has a big influence on the city’s culture.

Museums, dedicated to different varieties of art, history, or oddities are scattered throughout the city! The Mütter Museum is one of the strangest museums we’ve ever been to, but those fascinated by the human body may also find it interesting.

Stop by Independence Hall where the founding fathers debated and signed some of the most important documents in US history, the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. After, take a short walk to the famous Liberty Bell.

Take a Walking Tour of the historic Old City with a guide to be sure that you don’t miss any of the most notable sites during your visit!

Those interested in crime will enjoy a visit to the Eastern State Penitentiary. Wander the eerie passageways on a self-guided tour where notorious criminals like Al Capone were once locked away. We found the audio tour that comes with your entrance ticket really interesting!

In addition to all these wonderful attractions, the area also has a lot of restaurants where you can taste local flavors. The Philly Cheesesteak war is alive and well. While Geno’s and Pat’s are the most famous, they’re not the only places to grab these sandwich staples.

Before leaving the City of Brotherly Love, visit the Museum of Art and run up the stairs made famous in “Rocky.”

➡️ Pro Tip: If you’re able to plan a visit on Independence Day weekend like we have, you may be lucky enough to sit on the museum stairs and catch the movie being played under the stars.

11. Delaware Water Gap

Drive Time: 4 hours 50 minutes Distance: 299 miles

The Delaware Water Gap is an ideal destination if you are looking to explore the outdoors. The area features caves, waterfalls, hiking trails, wildlife viewing areas, and many other outdoor attractions.

The Delaware River forms a natural border between Pennsylvania and New Jersey at this location, which also makes it a great spot for fishing or canoeing on the river.

The area is so beautiful that many are hoping that the national recreation area will soon be upgraded to national park status, becoming Pennsylvania’s first.

We had a fantastic time sipping on a drink at the Glass Wine Bar in the Ledges Hotel. Make sure you request a table with a view of the waterfall!

We had an early reservation for a drink and appetizers and then drove the 30 minutes back to Raymondskill Falls. The restaurant wasn’t as busy, and we had Raymondskill to ourselves.

12. Cherry Spring State Park

Drive Time: 3 hours 30 minutes Distance: 182 miles

Cherry Spring State Park is a perfect destination for visitors who want to enjoy some relaxing time outdoors. It’s a great space to get “off the grid.”

This park is a true destination for stargazers. It’s known as the darkest spot on the eastern seaboard. The park is situated far away from any big cities, light pollution, and traffic; all of which make it the perfect place for seeing the Milky Way, among other things.

Cherry Springs also offers educational programs throughout the summer to help visitors learn more about astronomy and the night sky.

You’ll need to book a campsite far in advance for any big events such as eclipses or meteor showers. There aren’t a ton of campsites, and they can book up quickly, and they’re definitely rustic.

Trails in the surrounding state forest are great for mountain biking and hiking. Although the only overnight options within the park are rustic tenting options, check out Airbnb or VRBO for private cabin and home rentals near the park.

13. Hershey

Drive Time: 3 hours 50 minutes Distance: 215 miles

Hershey, Pennsylvania is a small town near the heart of Amish country. For those who are thrill-seekers, there is plenty to do. The amusement park is a main attraction for tourists.

Next door, the Hershey Story Museum & Chocolate World offers visitors a glimpse into the history of Milton S. Hershey’s chocolate empire and how it has grown to include popular brands like Reese’s, Twizzlers, Almond Joy, Mr. Goodbar, and many more.

Five-pound Hershey chocolate bars exist and are sold here. I know. I got one!

You can also take a guided tour, which is more of an experience through the Chocolate World with animations and songs.

Enjoy some shopping or play a round of golf if the weather permits. There are several hotels and motels close to the Hershey area, including one right next to Hersheypark.

14. Bedford Springs

Drive Time: 1 hour 45 minutes Distance: 108 miles

The Bedford Springs Resort is a historic property that was established in 1806. The resort is centered around healing mineral springs that were discovered in 1796. In those times, it was a destination for city dwellers who would vacation to get away from the pollution and hustle and bustle of city life.

It was completely renovated and restored, then opened back to the public in 2007. Let me tell you, this property is a hidden gem in south-central Pennsylvania. We were pleasantly surprised with what we discovered staying at the resort.

The 300-acre property features a spa, fed by a mineral spring, which pays homage to the original purpose of the property. Indulge in a “Bedford Bath” which is the signature treatment here, alternating hot and cold baths with steam from the springs, too.

This is a great weekend getaway where you can indulge in relaxation, but there are also onsite hiking trails, bike rentals, and golf. An outfitter on site can help book fishing trips in the area.

Getaways from Pittsburgh in the Neighboring States

Pittsburgh is within just a couple hours’ drive to multiple other states. There are plenty of options when considering weekend getaways from Pittsburgh, so don’t be afraid to get outside the city and the state.

Access to many spots in Ohio is just a short drive away. Although some rivalry exists between residents of the two states, that shouldn’t deter you from considering a visit!

15. Cleveland

Drive Time: 2 hours 15 minutes Distance: 133 miles

While some Pittsburghers may roll their eyes or shake their head any time Cleveland is mentioned, it’s an enjoyable spot to visit for a weekend. At just over 2 hours from Pittsburgh, it’s an easily accessible drive for just a short visit.

Cleveland’s downtown features an impressive skyline of high-rises, fun restaurants, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. For music lovers, this place is a must-visit!

Cleveland also has the closest NBA professional basketball team in the Cavaliers, if you’re looking for a different sport to watch that isn’t offered in Pittsburgh.

There are so many great restaurants, bars, and breweries to visit, too, scattered all over town. Don’t just head down East 4th Street. Check out Tremont or Ohio City, The Flats, and other hotspots around town.

And, if you’re a beer lover, Cleveland has an impressive list of breweries to visit, many of which offer samples or tours. We love Noble Beast, Masthead, Terrestrial… We could go on!

16. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Drive Time: 1 hour 50 minutes Distance: 112 miles

Who knew a national park was so close and accessible? Even if the Delaware Water Gap becomes a national park, this one is closer! Cuyahoga Valley is a newer and lesser-known national park, but there are some beautiful spots to check out.

Brandywine Falls should be one of your first stops, and then hike along some of the fantastic trails, including a section of the Buckeye Trail. Take a ride on the train, especially if you’re visiting during the fall when the leaves are at their peak.

The Towpath Trail is a popular spot for bicyclists. The trail, which follows the Ohio & Erie Canal currently for 87 miles, is mostly flat and makes for an easy ride. It will be 101 miles long when it’s all finished!

The trail offers great views of the Cuyahoga River and the surrounding landscape, as well as some information about the historical significance of the canal way.

All of these sites certainly make Cuyahoga Valley National Park worth visiting on a weekend from Pittsburgh.

17. Nelson Ledges

Drive Time: 1 hour 35 minutes Distance: 92 miles

Nelson Ledges is a great place to explore the natural rock formations that make up the park. Hike, swim, bike, snorkel, camp, or find another activity that gets you excited to be outdoors. The possibilities here are nearly endless!

Check event schedules. The park is sometimes home to arts festivals and musical events on its 250 acres of land.

If you’re looking for a more leisurely activity, take a walk along one of the nature trails or enjoy a picnic lunch.

There are also two fishing lakes in the park if you’d like to relax by the water. Just be sure to check with the park staff about fishing regulations before you start casting your line.

18. Put-in-Bay

Drive Time: 3 hours 50 minutes Distance: 202 miles

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway with both a party atmosphere and spots to find some solitude, Put-in-Bay is the perfect spot. Just a few hours from Pittsburgh, this island offers plenty to do and see.

The town is situated on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. You’ll have to take a ferry to get to the island.

There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops to explore in town. Rent a golf cart for a fun way to get around town. You can also visit some of the historical sites or take a boat tour of the area.

If you’re looking for something more active, there are plenty of bike trails or golf courses to check out. And don’t forget about the beaches! Put-in-Bay has some of the best beaches around for swimming and enjoying Lake Erie.

19. Hocking Hills

Drive Time: 3 hours 30 minutes Distance: 193 miles

Hocking Hills is a favorite destination in the region for a number of reasons. It’s one of the most popular state parks in Ohio. Things to do in Hocking Hills include canyoneering, rafting, and hiking through the scenic landscape of rock formations, cliffs, and waterfalls.

The area can get quite busy during the summer, so consider visiting the Hocking Hills hiking trails during the winter for a different experience. Just make sure that you have the appropriate gear.

The trails can get really icy and dangerous! We definitely needed our Kahtoola microspikes , especially on the Old Man’s Cave and Rock House trails.

In addition to the great outdoors, the town has a number of places worth checking out. Take a ride around the area, visit some of the antique stores, or stop at the winery for an afternoon of tasting.

For overnight stays, there are soooo many cabins throughout the area with great amenities like game rooms, hot tubs, and beautiful fireplaces. Many pet-friendly cabins and hiking trails allow dogs in Hocking Hills , making this a great place to get away with your pups.

Pro Tip: Cell phone service can be extremely limited in many spots, even at some of the cabins that we’ve stayed at. Make sure you have paper maps and plan your trip ahead of time. You don’t want to risk missing things you’d like to do because you don’t have wifi or cell service.

Drive Time: 2 hours 20 minutes Distance: 138 miles

Geneva, Ohio is a small town with a big heart. The wine country of northeast Ohio has been growing and thriving. It’s home to beautiful scenery, delicious food & drink, outdoor adventure opportunities…the list goes on!

Geneva is home to more than just vineyards. It’s also the perfect place to visit if you want the best of both worlds: a weekend spent exploring or relaxing- all without having to travel too far from Pittsburgh.

Check out some of the beautiful covered bridges of Ashtabula County. There are 19 of them around the county.

Spend your time wandering “the Strip” for a carnival-like atmosphere during the summer months or get out and get active at the state park. Then, enjoy the wine! One of my personal favorites is Laurello’s.

Stay at the Lakehouse Inn in Geneva-on-the-Lake to be within walking distance of the Strip and enjoy epic lakefront views.

21. Sandusky

Drive Time: 3 hours Distance: 182 miles

Cedar Point Amusement Park is a world-famous amusement park located in Sandusky, Ohio. It’s home to some of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in the world, as well as a variety of other rides and attractions.

You could absolutely spend an entire weekend in Sandusky visiting the beach on Lake Erie, checking out Cedar Point, and exploring the shopping and restaurants in town. There’s so much to see and do in the region.

This would be a great weekend getaway for families, especially with older children. Park entrance fees can be on the pricey side, but buying multi-day passes does give some discount.

Sharing a lot of the southern border of Pennsylvania, Maryland is home to a couple of weekend getaway destinations from Pittsburgh.

22. Deep Creek Lake

Drive Time: 2 hours 10 minutes Distance: 103 miles

Just over two hours away, this lake offers plenty of activities to keep you busy during your stay. You can go fishing, boating, swimming, or hiking on the trails around the lake during the summer.

Wisp Resort in the area is a great winter destination for skiers and snowboarders. The resort is on the smaller side but offers slopes for all levels of skiers and a terrain park for the more adventurous.

There are also restaurants and shops in and around the town of McHenry if you need to take a break from all the outdoor activities, or stay in and just spend a weekend relaxing in one of the lakeside cottages.

23. Baltimore

Drive Time: 4 hours 5 minutes Distance: 248 miles

Baltimore is a city with a rich history, both as an industrial port and as the birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner. But today, Baltimore’s many charms extend to its diverse restaurants and neighborhoods, world-class museums and art galleries, beautiful parks, and waterfront promenade. It’s also home to world-class universities like Johns Hopkins.

Some must-sees include The National Aquarium, which showcases millions of gallons of water-filled tanks with thousands of different species of aquatic life from around the world. You can explore the Atlantic coral reef or get up close with sharks in Shark Alley.

Baltimore is also home to the famous Inner Harbor, with its beautiful skyline views.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back experience, stop by the Johns Hopkins University campus or check out the museums and art galleries around town. Stop by the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where you can see Edgar Allen Poe’s gravesite.

New York is such a large state that much of it is not accessible within a reasonable amount of time to be considered a weekend trip, even a long weekend trip from Pittsburgh. There are a few options, though, all of which have something fun to offer.

24. The Finger Lakes

Drive Time: 5 hours Distance: 284 miles

The Finger Lakes wine country in upstate New York is a beautiful destination for a weekend getaway. The region is home to stunning landscapes, delicious food and drink, and plenty of outdoor adventure opportunities.

The Finger Lakes region is one of the furthest destinations included in this list, and you’ll want to take a long weekend vacation (or maybe more) to explore everything the region has to offer.

Spend the mornings exploring the many waterfalls scattered throughout the area or one of the stunning state parks near the lakes. The afternoons can be saved for wine tasting. Relax by one of the beautiful lakes in the evenings. What could make a better weekend getaway?

Make sure you check out Watkins Glen , Taughannock Falls , and Letchworth State Parks. These are just a few hiking options that have beautiful things to see around the Finger Lakes, but each one has great waterfalls and hiking trails.

25. Jamestown

Drive Time: 2 hours 40 minutes Distance: 171 miles

Did you know that Jamestown, NY is the birthplace of Lucille Ball? She was born there in 1911 and spent her childhood there. It is also her final resting place, along with some members of her other family members.

After a successful career in Hollywood, she retired to her hometown and opened the Lucy-Desi Museum. The museum celebrates her life and career and is home to many artifacts from her time on I Love Lucy.

Jamestown is also home to the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival each year. The festival features stand-up comedians, sketch comedy groups, and performances from both up-and-comers and well-known comedians.

For outdoor lovers, nearby Chautauqua Lake has plenty to do from boating and watersports to hiking trails and parks. Visit Southern Tier Brewing’s original location, and during the summer, you might be able to catch a musical act on the small outdoor stage while you grab a drink and bite to eat.

26. Niagara Falls

Drive Time: 3 hours 40 minutes Distance: 238 miles

Niagara Falls is quite a famous destination, being one of the most visited tourist attractions in North America. It’s no wonder why; Niagara Falls is truly spectacular. It’s the largest waterfall in North America by volume.

There are so many things to do at Niagara Falls, including taking a ride on the Maid of the Mist boat tour , visiting the Cave of the Winds, and even hiking along the Gorge Trail.

You can take out the planning and book a day-long tour of the highlights of Niagara Falls .

There are also many hotels located near the falls, making it easy to stay overnight while enjoying the beauty of the falls. Some even overlook the falls, but you’ll have to head over to the Canadian side for most of them.

While the area is very built-up and touristy, the magnitude of these falls should not be missed. In our experience, visits during the colder months were less crowded.

27. Ellicottville

Drive Time: 3 hours 15 minutes Distance: 203 miles

Ellicottville is a small town in Western New York, south of Buffalo. This quaint little town provides a lot of bang for your buck, especially if you enjoy outdoor activities.

The town is home to 2 ski slopes, which offer even more than just winter fun.  During the summer, trails are open for exploration and mountain biking at Holiday Valley. Just south of town, there are more trails and outdoor areas to visit in the state forests.

After a day of exploring, you can spend the evening wandering through the shops in town or grab dinner and a drink at Ellicottville Brewing.

If you’re looking for a quiet weekend escape in a small town, this is the perfect spot.

28. Buffalo

Drive Time: 3 hours 20 minutes Distance: 219 miles

The city of Buffalo gives off very similar vibes to that of Pittsburgh with the locals and things to do.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, as well as museums and art galleries, and a waterfront with activities in all seasons. 

Ever wanted to try your luck at curling after watching it on TV during the Olympics? There are lanes at the waterfront area, known as Canalside, where you can try it out and learn the sport. There are also skating rinks and plenty of winter fun. 

During the summer, the waterfront becomes a popular location for concerts and festivals, such as the annual Taste of Buffalo food festival. You could also combine a trip to Buffalo and Niagara Falls, as they’re only about 20 miles apart.

West Virginia

Wild and wonderful, West Virginia has plenty of outdoor adventure waiting in its mountains.

29. New River Gorge

Drive Time: 3 hours 30 minutes Distance: 217 miles

Just over 200 miles to the south, you can visit the US’s newest national park the New River Gorge .

The area in and around the gorge is popular with thrill-seekers, as there is fantastic whitewater rafting in both the New and Gauley Rivers. While we haven’t tackled the Gauley, the New River trip is fun in the spring.

Rock climbing and hiking are also other popular activities in the park, and you’ll find lots of camping options to stay the night in the area. Whether you’d like to spend the night in a primitive cabin or one with lots of amenities, there is a suitable choice. Plenty of tent camping sites are available, too.

Cell phone reception can be a problem in parts of the park, so plan ahead by downloading maps, just in case you find yourself off the grid. It is one of many great areas in West Virginia to get off the grid.

30. Charleston

Drive Time: 3 hours 35 minutes Distance: 228 miles

This historic city is the capital of West Virginia. With its beautiful architecture and charming downtown, Charleston is an absolute must-see when visiting West Virginia.

Although it is the capital of the state, Charleston has kept much of its small-town charm throughout, making this a relaxing weekend getaway from Pittsburgh.

Shop in the Capitol Market or attend an event at the Haddad Riverfront Park amphitheater. Grab a bite at one of the many downtown restaurants serving dishes like Italian or Mexican favorites. 

For a long weekend option, combine a visit to Charleston and the New River Gorge. The one-hour drive between the two destinations on Route 60 is scenic and beautiful. It’ll give you a good taste of those West Virginia country roads.

31. Dolly Sods Wilderness

Drive Time: 3 hours 25 minutes Distance: 152 miles

Another beautiful off-the-grid destination in West Virginia, Dolly Sods is a hiking paradise. As part of the larger Monongahela National Forest, there are over 17,000 acres of outdoor areas to explore.

This is a destination for those who are more adventurous outdoor lovers. 

There are trails for hikers of all levels, and if you want to see some wildlife, keep your eyes peeled for deer, foxes, and even black bears.

The best way to enjoy the outdoors is to camp out here. There are several campsites that offer electricity and water hookups, but no showers.

To really get to some of the best seclusion, plan to head to the backcountry, but only if you come prepared.

Much of Virginia requires more of a drive, so not all of the state is accessible for weekend getaways from Pittsburgh. A few spots could be great, though, especially for long weekend options.

32. Shenandoah

Drive Time: 3 hours 45 minutes Distance: 193 miles

If you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway from Pittsburgh, Shenandoah is a perfect place to go south.

One of the East Coast’s beautiful national parks, there are miles of hiking trails, biking, and scenic roadways through this portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

You can also take advantage of the natural beauty of the area by fishing and camping.

Shenandoah is definitely a four-season destination. Depending on the time of year, you will be treated to rushing waterfalls, fields of wildflowers, bright fall foliage, or snow-covered mountains.

All are beautiful in their own way, so plan your visit according to the type of scenery that you’d like to visit.

33. Washington D.C.

Drive Time: 4 hours 5 minutes Distance: 242 miles

Because it’s within a 5-hour drive of Pittsburgh, we can’t leave the nation’s capital off of our list of best weekend destinations from Pittsburgh.

You’ll certainly need more than a weekend to see everything that the capital city has to offer, though!

From the monuments and the National Mall to the shopping in Georgetown, there are endless things to do and places to explore. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly experience, check out the Smithsonian Museums or the National Zoo.

They’re all free to visit!

18 Pittsburgh Weekend Trips to Get Out of the City

As such, we do not feature destinations and attractions outside of the metro area- so more-or-less anything beyond what we would call a  Pittsburgh day trip (about 60-90 minutes each way). You can see more of this on our interactive Pittsburgh map at the end of every post here as well.

While we do explore elsewhere in Pennsylvania, the country, and world quite a bit on frequent trips each year, we have decided to publish all non-southwestern Pennsylvania content on our sister travel blog, Living the Dream .

On this site, we've covered journeys from as a close to home as Cleveland , the  Finger Lakes in New York, or the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky all the way to international destinations like Thailand , Mount Everest in Nepal , and Easter Island to name a few.

But to share Pittsburgh weekend trips ideas that you can take within a few hours of driving, this guide was born!

What Makes a Good Weekend Trip from Pittsburgh?

To us, a weekend trip from Pittsburgh would satisfy two specific points:

• The destination can be reached anywhere between 90 minutes to five hours from Pittsburgh (anything less could be a day trip, anything more may require more than a weekend for most).
• Would require at least one overnight stay to fully enjoy (while some may require a day or two extra to make it a long weekend).

For the purposes of this guide, we're also only going to feature destinations available via driving as well. However, if you are planning a weekend trip requiring a flight we have likely featured many of those over at Living the Dream as well!

First, we're going to start with weekend trips within Pennsylvania, and then we'll branch out to cover states nearby.

Pennsylvania Weekend Trips

When it comes to weekend trips within the state of Pennsylvania, we have to be upfront and state that we cannot do the state justice. With 67 counties spanning over 46,000 square miles, it would take us quite a bit of time to explore all PA has to offer. The following are a few places to consider when planning a weekend trip in the state and are a mix of recommendations from our own travels and via our friends at UncoveringPA !

The Laurel Highlands

The Laurel Highlands is one of those spots that is easily reached from Pittsburgh in a day trip but also covers such a vast distance that it could be a weekend trip in its own right. From the Laurel Highlands ski resorts in the winter, Frank Lloyd Wright houses such as Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob , numerous parks like Ohiopyle , white water rafting in the summer, amusement parks like Idlewild & Soakzone , or historical spots like Fort Ligonier or Bushy Run Battlefield , there is truly enough to see in this stretch of Pennsylvania to fill up multiple weekends without ever running out. So make a trip out of it!

Erie is a close, two-hour drive for most in Pittsburgh, and while this one could easily be visited in a long day trip, we think it is best explored over the course of a weekend. Why? Well, apart from being perfectly situated on the lakes, Erie is home to a number of wineries, the Erie Ale Trail (full of some stellar breweries), and the gorgeous Presque Isle State Park – a peninsula on the lake featuring beaches and beautiful nature. Definitely far more to enjoy than just a day trip!

Harrisburg / Hershey

As the state's capital, Harrisburg offers a number of historical sights to check out including the Capitol building and Broad Street Market (one of the oldest continually operating farmer's markets in the country). The city's location in central PA (about 3 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh) also makes it a great spot for restaurants and breweries , with the popular Troeg's Brewery calling the region home. Just on the outskirts of Harrisburg is Hershey, home to the famed amusement park and resort offering many Hershey-themed dining options as well.

Cherry Springs

Cherry Springs may not be the most well-known weekend trip from Pittsburgh, but it is one of the most interesting. That is because this spot is known as the darkest location east of the Mississippi in the USA, making it a great spot to go stargazing! But, when visiting this one, we highly recommend spending multiple nights as your ability to view the stars may be impacted by the weather (worth it for the roughly 4-hour drive, too). On our last visit, we booked too far in advance and ended up being rained out!

Philadelphia

Out of all the weekend trip options featured in this guide, Philadelphia is among the most historical (and the furthest at almost exactly 5 hours). The birthplace of the USA occurred in Independence Hall, and there are many more historical sites to see when visiting. In between, hitting up restaurants to enjoy the iconic Philly cheesesteak is an absolute must as well! (And as far as the Pat's vs Geno's debate is concerned, it is no contest- Geno's for us)!

The Poconos

The Poconos is another popular natural area in Pennsylvania, much like the Laurel Highlands, that is known for hiking, waterfalls , and reconnecting with nature. At 4 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh, this one is a bit of a drive, but those who make the journey will be rewarded with a stunning weekend out in nature!

Almost every American should be well aware of the Battle of Gettysburg that occurred over three days in 1863. It is often considered to be the bloodiest battle ever on American soil, and during the course of the fight over 40,000 troops lost their lives. Today the site lives on as a battlefield memorial, and at approximately 3 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh is a great weekend trip idea for those who are looking to learn more about Civil War history in the state.

Looking for where to stay in Gettysburg? Check out the Inn at Cemetery Hill or possibly an VRBO . Or, to make it a bigger trip, stay in Frederick, Maryland (below), to have a base for more historical Civil War spots!

Lancaster County, located about four hours east of Pittsburgh, is known primarily for being Pennsylvania Dutch Country and home to a thriving Amish community, covered bridges, and a whole lot more. But while this is often one of the biggest draws to this part of the state, Lancaster city  is also home to a modest restaurant scene, the National Watch and Clock Museum , and a whole lot more- making it a great weekend trip.

Trips Outside of Pennsylvania

For weekend trip ideas outside of Pennsylvania in the surrounding states, we recommend checking out the following destinations and articles on our sister site,  Living the Dream . These destinations are all reached within driving distance, too!

We may give Cleveland a lot of grief because of the Browns, but all sports situations aside, the city is actually quite the fun place to visit (and at just 2 hours away from Pittsburgh, an easy weekend trip too!). Cleveland is home to a wonderful assortment of breweries , modern restaurants, the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , and is conveniently located on the shore of Lake Erie- giving a number of options for those who want to have a weekend trip somewhat close to home!

Looking for where to stay in Cleveland? Check out the Hilton Cleveland right in the heart of downtown near the Rock Hall or Clifford House B&B in the trendy Ohio City neighborhood. Or, if apartment rentals are more your style, there are a number options in Cleveland too.

Keeping up the trend of nearby sports cities that we can be somewhat considered rivals with, Cincinnati is an easy 4 1/2 hour drive from Pittsburgh. Between visiting for the sports teams (perhaps watching the Steelers beat the Bengals, or the Reds and Pirates being awful together), enjoying the city's stellar breweries , or simply marveling at the architecture along the Ohio River (including the Roebling Bridge, whose wire support system was created just outside of Pittsburgh), you'll have a great time exploring a city that isn't all too different from Pittsburgh when visiting here!

Looking for where to stay in Cincinnati?  Consider the historical Cincinnatian right in the heart of downtown! And since Cincinnati is a huge city, VRBO has numerous options to choose from , too.

Cedar Point

Are thrill rides more your speed? The 3 hour trip to Sandusky, Ohio, to visit Cedar Point is a must. This one is often considered to be the  Rollercoaster Capital of the World (although is now #2 in terms of coaster count) and is home to some of the tallest, longest, and fastest rollercoasters you'll ever ride. While you can easily visit this park in a single day, a weekend trip is a must in order to experience everything they truly have to offer!

Niagara Falls

Depending on where you live in the city, you could possibly make it all the way to Toronto in just over five hours of driving. However, as we're keeping this list to feature spots you can visit in under five hours of driving, we're going to stop just a bit closer at one of the largest waterfalls in the region- Niagara Falls!

This massive waterfall can be reached on the US side in just about 3 hours and 45 minutes from Pittsburgh and throw on a bit more to cross the border and you can be on the (admittedly more beautiful) Canadian side to see the raw power of nature for yourself- just don't forget your passport.

Upstate New York

To us, when we think of upstate New York what we specifically are thinking about is the area including Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse. This area was home to a lot of historical figures like Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglass, is enjoying an explosion in modern breweries thanks to recent state law changes, and is also home to some of the most stunning New York waterfalls we've seen. For those who like city, nature, food, and it all, a trip through upstate New York is a fabulous option all within 3 to 5 hours of driving depending on how far you want to travel!

The Finger Lakes

In a way, we could call the Finger Lakes part of Upstate New York and be fine, but this particular stretch of New York (about 5 hours from Pittsburgh) is home to beautiful lakes, many impressive Finger Lakes wineries , Watkins Glen State Park (one of our favorite state parks anywhere we've been), and a whole lot more. As such, you could spend an entire weekend checking out the lakes and wineries all without visiting any other city. Or, if you want just a bit more, head to Corning on your way home to stop at the iconic Corning Museum of Glass .

Check out the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel on the shores of Seneca Lake, steps away from Watkins Glen, and a short drive from some of our favorite wineries like Boundary Breaks and Hermann J Weimer! There are also a wealth of apartment rental options right on the lake as well.

Shenandoah, Virginia

Want to explore another gorgeous wine region but head south? Shenandoah, Virginia, is the place to be. Not only are the wineries in Shenandoah pretty stellar (especially for white wines), but you also have easy access to the famous Skyline Drive , Shenandoah Caverns , and so much more outdoor nature activities. Just be prepared for a fair bit of driving at this one as you're going to cover a pretty good distance when exploring here. You can even detour to Harpers Ferry, WV , on the way back home too!

Washington DC

Washington DC is the kind of city that doesn't need much explanation. The nation's capital is home to some of the most impressive memorials, monuments, and museums in all of the USA, and the short 4-hour drive from Pittsburgh makes for a great weekend trip to take in as much history as possible!

We have to admit, our interest in visiting Baltimore is often less on history and more on the food. The city, located just 4 hours from Pittsburgh, is a hub for all things seafood (namely crabs) and serves up a number of options at the many local restaurants, famous Lexington Market, and more. 

Looking for where to stay in Baltimore?  Check out the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront just steps away from Inner Harbor! There are a number of great apartment rental options nearby too!

Frederick, Maryland

At first glance, Frederick, MD, may not seem like your conventional spot to visit, but this one offers a strategic location to use as a base for trips to Washington DC, Baltimore, Gettysburg, and nearby Harper's Ferry as well- all just 30 to 60 minutes away (while Frederick itself is only just over 3 hours from Pittsburgh)! The city boasts a beautiful creek path, vibrant downtown full of shopping and dining options, and its own unique civil war history on its own right (be sure to visit the National Museum of Civil War Medicine ), making it a great spot to enjoy for a few days on its own, or at night after returning from many of the other historical cities nearby.

Don’t overlook Youngstown, especially Butler Institute of American Art, McDonough Museum of Art, Charles Smith Rock and Gem Collection and Ward Beecher Planetarium, all on the Youngstown State University campus. Within walking distance is the Arms Museum (a house museum NOT military), the Tyler History Museum and the Museum of Industry and History. Be sure to visit Fellow’s Riverside Gardens with the D. D. and Velma Davis Center and Lanterman Mill in Mill Creek Park. The Lily Pond and various lakes and wetlands ringed by extensive bike and hiking trails are a wonderful option in the park, known as the Green Cathedral. Many dining and entertainment venues are available in downtown Youngstown. Accessibility and ease of driving around town is a big plus. Drive up Fifth Avenue through the historic district to see the magnificent homes of early 20th century industrialists and community leaders. Wick Park is a beautiful city green space surrounded by additional large homes and Stambaugh Auditorium. The Covelli Center and adjacent amphitheater are great places to attend concerts, hockey games and other events. Don’t skip Youngstown,

If you are an outdoors person, try The Hocking Hills, Ohio area. Only a three and one half hour drive from Pittsburgh. Plenty of hiking (waterfalls and caves), rock climbing, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, zip lining.

I recommend Big Rail Brewing in Grove City. They have a beer garden in the woods every weekend plus food trucks. The location is beautiful and the grounds are perfect for social distancing outdoors.

When visiting Erie be sure to visit the Erie Children’s Museum, the Erie Art Museum, and the Maritime museum. There are also a lot of great local wineries in the area.

Berlin, Ohio–Amish Country Approximately 2 hours from Pittsburgh. Great food, many shops, historic Millersburg a few miles away. Buggy rides, Walnut Creek store stocked with grocery items, jams, jellies a nearby small zoo. Lots to do!

You missed Lake Raytown by Altoona. Beautiful place to camp or get a cabin.

For anyone interested in trains and/or history, a weekend in the Altoona/Johnstown area is a great trip. Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona is different from other RR sites because it’s more about the people than the trains. Then go up (literally!) to the Horseshoe Curve – further up the mountain to the Gallitzin Tunnels – head out to the nearby Allegheny Portage Railroad NHS. Then down US 22 west to the Cresson and the Cassandra viewing platforms where railfans will tell you all about the trains on the mainline. For more RR interest, go east to the East Broad Top Railroad and ride a steam train; the Everett RR also runs excursions from Hollidaysburg (my favorite little town). Or, for history buffs, continue south from Cassandra to the Johnstown Flood NHS, and the flood museum in downtown Johnstown.

Duquesne Incline Duquesne Incline

The Duquesne Incline is one of two uphill trolleys — and it has been carting visitors up Mount Washington since the 1870s. After falling on hard times, the Duquesne Incline was lovingly restored in 1963. But why should you visit the trolley in this area instead of the Monongahela one?

This one transports you to an ideal vantage point in Mount Washington, directly above where Pittsburgh's three rivers collide. There's a large viewing platform that extends just over the cliff and on a clear day, the view from the top makes for some excellent photographs. However, some recent visitors say you should wait and hop on the incline at night since it's less crowded and you can see the illuminated city below. Once you get to the top, aside from admiring the view, you can take some time to check out the small museum with some fun facts on Pittsburgh's history and photographs, or grab a souvenir from the gift shop. There are a few restaurants near the upper station as well, though travelers say they're pretty pricey and you're better off heading back downtown to grab a bite to eat.

Strip District Strip District free

What was once a primarily industrial neighborhood is now packed with restaurants, international markets, museums and shops. The Strip District, which runs alongside the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, measures only half a square mile, but it has plenty of attractions and eateries to fill up your day (and your stomach). 

Chow down on one of Pittsburgh's staple French fry-topped sandwiches at Primanti Brothers, wait in line for a tasty breakfast at Deluca's Diner or savor the famous pancakes from Pamela's P&G Diner. You won't find many national chain restaurants in this area, and visitors say the independently run and family-owned establishments give the neighborhood its authentic Pittsburgh charm.

Senator John Heinz History Center Senator John Heinz History Center

The  Senator John Heinz History Center  isn't your typical museum. Yes, there are artifacts from the city's role in the French & Indian War, but then there's the Western Pennsylvania Sports exhibit, detailing the city's football and baseball legacies, and the exhibit on Heinz Ketchup and other Heinz products. From the Civil War to the industry titans of steel, if it's got to do with Pittsburgh, it's here.

Most recent visitors enjoy the museum's wide variety of displays and said they left feeling pleased that they know a little more about Pittsburgh. Travelers also appreciated the sensible layout and organized approach of the museum, which made it easy to navigate.

The Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is a popular backdrop for local weddings and a haven for stressed undergrads, since two universities are just a short walk away. But the conservatory has plenty to offer visitors as well: You can explore the collection of green rooms, each of which is dedicated to a region or specific plant type. Phipps is home to everything from tropical forests and butterfly gardens to bonsai, Joshua tree and orchid plant and flower collections. Just beyond the main entrance, a small shop and a cafe invite travelers to relax.  Phipps is great for families, too. The conservatory offers different hands-on activities as well as play areas for children.  Most visitors say while the admission may seem a little steep, it's well worth the price tag.

You'll find the Phipps Conservatory adjacent to Carnegie Mellon University's campus on Schenley Park. Admission is $17.95 for adults and $11.95 for children between ages 2 and 18. Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

Nestled in the Shadyside neighborhood, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium can make an entertaining afternoon for young families. Everything from the petting zoo in Kids Kingdom to the stingray tanks in the aquarium is family-friendly. This zoo is home to more than 400 different species of animals, some of which are threatened or endangered. Animals are grouped in different habitats, ranging from the African Savanna (where you'll see elephants, lions and giraffes) and the Asian Forest (say hello to tigers, red pandas and snow leopards) to the PPG Aquarium (with penguins, sharks and colorful fish) and Water's Edge (home to sea otters and polar bears).

Recent visitors said they were impressed by the zoo and the number of animals that were on exhibit, noting that when the weather's nice it's a great attraction to explore. 

PNC Park PNC Park

Located on the southern shore of North Side district, PNC Park is the home base for Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates. Catch an afternoon game and enjoy the local craft beers, hometown hot dogs and pierogies, plus some awesome game play.

Most visitors praise the stadium for its views (and suggest visiting on a fireworks night for added fun), but many say it's the entire experience that sets this ballpark apart. "It's not just the stunning, first-class ballpark and fabulous view of the skyline that make it great. It's the total package of greatness: the pre-game street scene, entertainment, tons of bars, sidewalk cafes, beer trucks, riverfront, kayaks — and that's just outside!" said one TripAdvisor user.

An asphalt link between some of Pittsburgh's most notable spots, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail lines the banks of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio waterways. The 24-mile-long path connects the downtown area to the surrounding neighborhoods and makes it easy for people to travel across the city without getting in a car or on a bus. It's also the perfect scenic recreation spot: You'll find people walking, running, biking and roller blading down the trail nearly every day. 

More than half a million people use the trail every year, as it's an active and fun way to see the best of Pittsburgh. A stroll down the North Side portion of the waterfront trail will bring you to the Andy Warhol Museum , PNC Park and Heinz Field . The downtown section traces the perimeter of Point State Park , where you'll find people enjoying the open park and the views of where the three rivers converge. 

Carnegie Science Center Carnegie Science Center

Offering a range of interactive exhibits covering a variety of topics, the Carnegie Science Center is a hit with adults and families with children. The science center, one of four Carnegie Museums in Steel City, is home to a planetarium, an exploration station with electricity and weather exhibits, a sports-focused venue, a robotics experience, a naval submarine and more. Within different areas of the museum, visitors can learn about energy through a kiosk game show, see what it feels like to be weightless on the zero-gravity climbing wall, understand the physics of sports and interact with the robots in roboworld.

Carnegie Science Center also offers entertainment options that are particular visitor favorites, including laser shows where neon lights and music combine (think: light shows set to Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd and Daft Punk hits) and screenings in the four-story Rangos Omnimax Theater (a massive domed IMAX theater).

Heinz Field Heinz Field

Whether you're a Steelers fan or a devotee of another NFL team, Heinz Field is worth a visit. This modern stadium has one of the most unique views throughout the league thanks to its waterfront location. It also doubles as a concert venue for major acts throughout the year.

Although tickets for games and concerts are pricey, you can take a tour for much less. Tours last about 90 minutes, run from April through October and cost $8 for adults and $7 for seniors and kids ages 5 to 17. Recent visitors say the tour is a good consolation if you can't catch a game, noting the guides are informative and you still get the opportunity to take photos with the river backdrop.

Kennywood Kennywood

From the major splash at the bottom of Pittsburg Plunge water ride to the 230-foot drop on the Phantom's Revenge roller coaster, Kennywood has a thrill in store for everyone. Located on the banks of the Monongahela River, this 150-acre amusement park has roller coasters, water rides, carousels, bumper cars, 3D experiences, a 4D theater, paddle boats and more. Crowd favorites include Thunderbolt, a wooden roller coaster built in 1924, and Turtle, which was built in 1927 and provides picturesque views of the river valley. The park has a Kiddieland which is perfect for adventurous youngsters between 36 inches and 56 inches tall.  

Kennywood also has what many amusement parks do not: a rich history. It started as a trolley park in 1898 that offered entertainment for mill workers and their families. Now, it unites old-time nostalgia with contemporary fun, and it's one of only two amusement parks to be named a National Historic Landmark. The park even features Lost Kennywood – a section of rides which replicate the architecture and design of the park's rides decades ago. 

Randyland Randyland free

Randyland brings sunshine to Pittsburgh even on the dreariest days. Created by native Pittsburgh artist Randy Gilson, Randyland is a vibrant, intricate and eclectic experiential art museum in the city's North Side. It's been bringing smiles to visitors' faces since 1995 when Gilson originally bought the building using funds he had earned as a part-time waiter and proceeded to decorate it with repurposed trash. 

Pittsburgh's Market Square Pittsburgh's Market Square free

Market Square is an open public space surrounded by restaurants and shops, located at the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Market Street. The area has long been a meeting spot for Pittsburgh residents and it's where the city's first courthouse and first jail were built. Nowadays, the pedestrian-only square is the grounds for many community-building events and festivals.

Some of Market Square's typical summer events include farmers markets, fashion truck pop-ups, outdoor yoga classes, outdoor dance classes and KidsPlay – an active, educational program series for children hosted in the square twice a week. Residents and visitors appreciate that there is always something happening in the square, and they say it's one of the few places in the city conducive to outdoor strolling, shopping and people-watching. 

Andy Warhol Museum Andy Warhol Museum

Located a block east of PNC Park in the North Side, the Andy Warhol Museum is the largest single-artist museum in the country. Housed in a refurbished warehouse, it holds seven floors' worth of instillations, reproductions and educational exhibits dedicated to one of the most famous Pittsburghers. Fans will find originals like the Brillo Boxes sculpture and the Elvis Presley painting among other artifacts and exhibits.

And with all that space, visitors can easily get their pop art fix. Most museumgoers appreciated the colorful pieces and loved learning a little more about Warhol's life and creative process. However, some say this museum might only interest die-hard fans and note the admission is a bit pricey.

Point State Park Point State Park free

Point State Park juts into the water at the spot where the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers meet the Ohio River. The 36-acre park in downtown Pittsburgh is at water level and provides great views of the riverboats, Mount Washington and PNC Park. Immerse yourself in an unconventional art experience at Mattress Factory – a three-building museum on Pittsburgh's North Side featuring exhibits from both established and up-and-coming artists. Mattress Factory was established in 1977 and played a major role in bringing new energy and culture to the city's North Side, specifically to the historic Mexican War Streets neighborhood. The museum came to inhabit many previously abandoned buildings and, because it appeals to tourists, it has helped make the neighborhood a more attractive place to visit in Pittsburgh.

The museum specializes in contemporary installation art, and exhibits are specifically created for the space in which they're showcased. The displays will challenge everything you think you know about contemporary art with vibrant colors, visual illusions and thought-provoking themes. Everyone is encouraged to experience the art using all their senses, so visitors can feel free to walk around, examine and, in some cases, even touch the displays. "Perplexing," "mesmerizing" and "one of a kind" are just a few ways previous visitors described the eclectic exhibits. However, some warn the content is not always child-friendly, with some exhibits leaning toward risqué and macabre. While some exhibits are permanent, others rotate every so often to keep the museum fresh and to showcase a wider variety of artists' work. Some permanent crowd favorites are the Repetitive Vision exhibit and the Infinity Dots Mirror Room.

Quecreek Mine Rescue Site Historical Landmark is over an hour’s drive from Pittsburgh.

This historical landmark can actually provide you with some important history of the region, especially given that this was where nine trapped miners were rescued after spending nearly four days trapped underground.

This site now includes the covered hole along with some information about the rescue operations that took place.

You can also take a look at the story surrounding this entrapment and rescue operation at this site while also looking at the stone statues.

The grounds around the landmark can be nice for a short stroll or walk, with many events and programs sometimes taking place here too.

20. Raccoon Creek State Park

If you are looking for things to do outside Pittsburgh , you can visit the Raccoon Creek State Park which spans around 7,500 acres and is merely a 35-minute drive from Pittsburgh.

There are many things for you to do here, including boating, swimming and fishing in the Raccoon Lake located on the premises of the park.

The Raccoon Creek can also provide some lovely views that you can enjoy by lounging and picnicking or even taking a hike or bike ride along one of the many trails in this park.

This state park is home to the Wildflower Reserve which blooms a large variety of wildflowers that can provide you with surprising views.

1. Ohiopyle State Park

Distance: 68 miles

Home to Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania, Ohiopyle State Park is located in the mountainous region of the Laurel Highlands. The 3,213-foot summit is easily accessible via a paved road and the park also features the 14-mile-long Youghiogheny River Gorge, one of the best places for whitewater rafting and kayaking in the state with rafting options for people of all levels. If you love waterfalls, then Ohiopyle has got you covered there too! Cucumber Falls with its 30-foot drop is one of Pennsylvania’s most photographed waterfalls and you can reach it by a short hiking trail. If you, or your kids, can’t resist the urge to get a little wet, the nearby Meadow Run has a natural waterslide created by a smaller cascade that is perfect for children. 

When you arrive, make sure to stop by the Laurel Highlands Falls Area Visitor Center where you can learn more about all of the great outdoor activities on offer in the park, including rock climbing lessons, zip lines, and nature trails. If you are visiting in the fall, this is also an amazing place to check out the fall foliage as you walk or bike along the well-maintained path. 

The trail starts in Cumberland, Maryland and finishes in Pittsburgh and if you want to cover the whole path without having to worry about transport, Amtrak offers services connecting various cities along the trail on its Capitol Limited Line which runs from Chicago to Washington DC and it is possible to bring your bike along with you and store it in a special train car. 

3. Presque Isle State Park

Presque Isle State Park is located on a 3,200-acre peninsula jutting out from Pennsylvania’s Lake Erie shoreline. 4. Conneaut Lake

5. Laurel Caverns

As one of the largest and deepest caverns in the northeastern United States, the Laurel Caverns is a fantastic day trip if you are up for a day of adventure. With four miles of interconnected passageways and a fascinating array of geological formations, there is plenty to see whether you opt for a family-friendly guided tour or one of their spelunking adventures. 

Don’t forget that the caverns are also home to the northeast’s largest bat hibernation area so they are closed during the winter months to give these little cuties their much-needed beauty sleep. They don’t open again until the last bat has left the bat cave (usually in April) so make sure to check their website for the most up-to-date information. 

6. McConnells Mill State Park

Spreading more than 2,500 acres around the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, one of the country’s National Natural Landmarks, McConnells Mill State Park offers a jaw-droppingly beautiful landscape. The gorge was created when glacial lakes were drained leaving behind steep walls and a floor scattered with boulders. There are plenty of scenic overlooks where you can stop to admire nature’s artistry and the 11 miles of hiking trails give people of all ages the chance to get some exercise in. You can also find a historic 19th-century gristmill and covered bridge that is worth checking out while you are there. 

Keep in mind that Slippery Rock is a fast-moving, whitewater creek and it is unsafe for swimming (not to mention the slippery rocks that you would have to maneuver to even get to the creek!). As tempting as it may be to jump in on a hot July day, this is one place where you should stay dry.

7. Moraine State Park

Distance: 39 miles

Travel Time: 40 minutes 

With more than 42 miles of shoreline along the tranquil Lake Arthur and 71 miles of hiking trails, Moraine State Park packs in a pretty big punch when it comes to outdoor activities. While you are there, you can enjoy horseback riding, mountain biking, boating, kayaking, or swimming from one of the lake’s two sandy beaches. In the winter, you can also go cross country skiing, sledding, and snowmobiling making it a great year-round destination. Although it is not possible to camp there, there are modern cabins that are perfect for families or groups of friends and give you the chance to experience the park in the still of the night. 

8. Seven Springs Mountain Resort

Distance: 59 miles 

Seven Springs Mountain Resort is a small ski resort with 33 slopes and trails ranging from beginner slopes all the way to advanced runs and seven terrain parks, totaling more than 285 skiable acres. It is a great spot to enjoy the snow of southeastern Pennsylvania no matter your age or skiing or snowboarding experience. There are packages on their website for lift passes and accommodation so make sure to check before you go if you are tempted to stay overnight as it may be able to save you some money!

During the warmer months, it morphs into a paradise for summer sports and you can spend days hiking along the different trails along the Laurel Ridgeline visiting scenic lookout points or serene lakes. You can purchase chairlift passes during the summer to get a headstart on some elevation gain. There is also a mountaintop golf course where you can practice your swing while enjoying the beautiful vista.

9. Cleveland, Ohio

Located just a two hours drive from Pittsburgh, Cleveland is another Rust Belt city that has managed to reinvent itself. Sandwiched between the southern shore of Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River, Cleveland has a lovely waterfront and a walkable downtown area where you can see reminders of the city’s former life as one of America’s most important and wealthiest cities. While one of the city’s top attractions is undoubtedly the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there is a slew of other museums that you can check out including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History. If the weather is nice, you can also take a stroll through the Cleveland Botanical Gardens or the Metropark Zoo which is home to thousands of animals from around the world. 

 If you are there during the summer, make sure to pack your bathing suit so you can take a swim at one of the city’s many beaches or if you prefer to stay a bit drier, you can go kayaking or paddleboarding along the river before stopping for lunch or a drink at the Flats. 10. Fallingwater

Distance: 67 miles

One of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s most well-known creations, Fallingwater blends seamlessly into the forest of the Bear Run Nature Reserve near Mill Run and is considered a masterpiece of 20th-century architecture. As the name suggests, it was designed to incorporate a beautiful waterfall allowing visitors to hear the relaxing sound of water throughout the house. While you are there, it is possible to see the house just as Wright designed it on a self-guided or guided tour. Advanced reservations are required and tickets get snapped up quickly so make sure to book well in advance. It is both a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this is one place that you definitely don’t want to miss!

If you are a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, there are also four other Wright houses located nearby in Polymath Park that are also open to visitors including Mäntylä, Blum, Duncan, and Balter. It is even possible to spend the night in a few of them so this could be a great option for architecture buffs!

11. Akron, Ohio

Distance: 110 miles

Travel Time: 1 ¾ hours

Located about halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, Akron often gets overlooked for its flashier neighbors. However, this small city offers quite a few things to do in a relaxed environment which is perfect for families and while you are there, you can visit the Akron Zoo or the Akron Art Museum. If the weather is nice, you can even head out to Brandywine Falls which sits within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, or take a stroll through the historic town of Seville with its charming 19th century downtown featuring quirky boutiques and antique shops, both of which lie just a 25-minute drive from Akron.

(Expert tip: the Akron Canton Airport is also amazingly easy to get in and out of and is sometimes much cheaper than flying into Pittsburgh).

12. Pro Football Hall of Fame 

Distance: 100 miles

Sports lovers shouldn’t miss this great little day trip. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton, Ohio, and is the perfect spot to learn more about your favorite masters of the pigskin. The museum features exhibits on most of football’s legendary players with exhibits showcasing how each player’s story and athletic prowess represented “courage, dedication, vision, fair play, integrity, and excellence.”

While Canton, Ohio may seem to be an odd place for a football hall of fame, the NFL was actually founded there in 1920 and Canton’s very own pro football team once dominated the sport (ok, it was a pretty long time along, but still …) and a trip to the museum gives visitors the chance to walk in the footsteps of the league’s original founders. While you are there, you can either explore on your own or join one of the guided tours.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located just a 25-minute drive south of Akron making it easy to combine both spots into one easy day trip. 

13. Wheeling, West Virginia

Distance: 59 miles

Travel Time: 1 hour

Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Wheeling may be a small town but there is a lot to do there! During a visit, you can make some new friends at the Good Zoo, tour a mansion museum, or unleash your inner child at the Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum. Wheeling also has a ton of green space where you can have a picnic, take a little snooze after an afternoon of sightseeing, or play a few rounds of golf. 

If you have the time (and like to visit creepy places), you can also visit the 19th century West Virginia Penitentiary . This historic landmark is a beautiful example of Victorian architecture and has a lot of interesting stories associated with it. You can learn more about the prison’s history and the spooky stories associated with it during a fascinating daytime guided tour or an evening paranormal investigation. 

14. Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Distance: 239 miles

Travel Time: 3 ¾ hours

Pennsylvania is famous for its large Amish population and you don’t have to go too far outside of Pittsburgh to learn more about this unique culture. From horse-drawn buggies to hand-rolled pretzels, Amish Country makes an interesting stop for all the culture vultures out there. Although the Amish can be found throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio, the largest concentration of them is in Lancaster County in eastern Pennsylvania. During a visit, you can take a guided tour of an Amish farm or take a countryside bus tour that meanders its way across the gently rolling hills and scenic farmlands of the surrounding region.

If you don’t have the time to make it all the way to Lancaster, you can also visit Holmes County, Ohio which is around a two-and-a-half-hour drive away and lies about halfway between Cleveland and Columbus. Although it isn’t as well set up for tourists, you can still get an idea of how the Amish live, check out an Amish farm, and support some of the local Amish-owned businesses. There is even an Amish Country Theater where you can catch a family-friendly show.

Whichever destination you choose, make sure to come hungry as there are many restaurants where you can try traditional Amish food that is absolutely delicious. Don’t forget to save room for dessert—the baked goods and homemade ice cream are out of this world!

15. Ambridge Historic District

Distance: 18 miles

Travel Time: 30 minutes 

Located along the Ohio River just a short drive west of Pittsburgh, the Ambridge Historic District is a 32-acre National Historic Site which was once a safe haven to the Harmony Society, a German communitarian sect that moved there in 1824 after unsurprisingly being persecuted in their native Germany. They were pretty successful and before long they had cotton, wool, saw, and grain mills operating and had a wine press, post office, a hotel, and stores. In essence, it was a fully-functioning town. The society officially dissolved in 1905 and the district stands as a living museum of their time there. 

The heart of the district is the 6-acre Old Economy Village featuring 17 restored historical buildings where you can visit the founder’s 1826 home, the feast hall, post office, granary, carriage house, community kitchen, and blacksmith shop as well as a few homes where you can get an idea of what life was like here throughout the 19th century. Many of the buildings have interesting exhibits that give visitors the chance to learn more about this interesting group of people. 

Although the town is best known for its preservation of the past, they are still very much in the present and there are a number of fun activities and events held throughout the year so make sure to check their website to see if there is anything going on while you are in town. 

16. Fort Necessity National Battlefield

Distance: 67 miles 

Known as being the location of one of George Washington’s not-so-great moments, the battle at Fort Necessity was the first encounter of the French and Indian Wars which ended with Washington surrendering to the French. While the original wooden fort is long gone, it has been recreated in the Fort Necessity National Battlefield ’s Great Meadow and visitors can learn more about the battle through guided tours and demonstrations. 

While you are there, don’t forget to check out Mount Washington Tavern. The tavern was built in 1827 and served as one of the hotels along the National Road. Today, it operates as a mini-museum, and inside, you can see artifacts from that era. Also, you may want to put on some walking shoes as the park has five miles of walking trails which are well worth checking out. 

17. Fort Ligonier

Distance: 51 miles 

Constructed in 1758, Fort Ligonier is a mid-18th century British fort that was part of a defense system that stretched from Philadelphia to Fort Duquesne, now a historic site in Downtown Pittsburgh. The fort was used during the French and Indian War and today, you can visit the reconstructed structure and onsite museum to learn about the battles that it survived, and see the original 18th-century powder magazine. There is also a recreated hospital ward with exhibits explaining the role that women played in the war effort and the medical treatments used to care for wounded and sick soldiers. Known as being one of the best amusement parks in Pennsylvania, Idlewild has been getting people’s hearts racing and faces smiling for the past 145 years making it one of the oldest amusement parks in the entire country. The park is divided into seven different themed sections and boasts roller coasters, thrill rides, and kid-friendly attractions as well as the SoakZone, their own onsite water park complete with water slides, lazy rivers, and swimming pools where you can cool off on a hot summer’s day (and trust us, it can get very, very hot there during the summer!). The park is small enough that it can be tackled in one day making it an easy day trip from Pittsburgh.

There are countless hiking trails, scenic overlooks, waterfalls, and more throughout the park, so you can easily spend an entire weekend here and still need to come back for more!

Compared to Niagara Falls on both the Canadian and American sides, Buffalo is much more affordable and isn’t as tourist-trappy.

If you love chicken wings, you need to go to Buffalo. Buffalo is the birthplace of the buffalo chicken wing! The name “Buffalo Wing” makes sense now, right? So if you’re taking a weekend trip from Pittsburgh to Buffalo, you have to try the wings! In addition to the wing scene, Buffalo has lots of things to do, including a zoo, museums, and sports teams.

Typically, we plan to leave Pittsburgh on a Friday night or Saturday morning, and then return Sunday evening in Pittsburgh. This way, we are only booking a hotel for one or two nights, and we have two full days to explore! If your schedule allows, consider making your weekend trip a three-day weekend! This will give you more time to explore and allow you to travel to a destination that is a little further away!

Pittsburgh is a town that was built on steel and the Steelers. But Pittsburgh’s reputation as a gritty city is as old as petticoats.

These days, the city thrives on culture as well. Formerly a Rust Belt baby, Pittsburgh is now a cultural and artistic hub. It’s also a foodie town.

Formerly, the go to meal in Pittsburgh was a French fry stuffed sandwich. Now, there are gourmet and international restaurants, from budget to expensive.

It’s possible to hit the highlights of Pittsburgh in 2-3 days. A really thorough exploration could take a week.

1. Carnegie Museum of Art

You may not think the “Steel City” of Pittsburgh is an art mecca. But for a small city, the beloved Carnegie Museum of Art (“CMOA”) packs a surprisingly art punch, with international flair.

For art lovers, it’s easily one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh.

The Carnegie was founded by industrialist and philanthropist  Andrew Carnegie in 1895. This gorgeous museum is in Pittsburgh’s lively Oakland neighborhood near the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.

There are many wings and dozens of galleries. The wide ranging collection is devoted to art from ancient times to cutting edge contemporary works.

Launched in 1974, the Scaife Galleries are CMOA’s crown jewel. Sarah Mellon Scaife was a sister of Pittsburgh tycoon Richard Mellon.

She gifted the massive Beaux Art galleries and a slew of important works to CMOA, nearly doubling its space.

The Impressionist works on display include pieces by top shelf names like Monet , Manet, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas, and Matisse.

A unique part of the Carnegie is the Hall of Architecture. As part of his effort to “bring the world to Pittsburgh,” Carnegie commissioned plaster copies of some of the world’s most iconic buildings and sculptures. 

They were created by master craftsmen. If the citizens of Pittsburgh couldn’t get to Europe, they could at least see what they were missing.

Architectural cast collections were incredibly popular in the late Victorian era. Their popularity subsequent waned. 

Now, the Carnegie has one of the world’s best collections, rivaling the Victorian & Albert Museum in London.

2. Carnegie Museum of Natural History

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is a top attraction in Pittsburgh for kids. The museum has an extraordinary collection of dinosaur fossils. It’s one of the best collections in the United States.

The permanent collection explores every facet of the natural world. You’ll see dinosaur skeletons, minerals, Egyptian artifacts, and sea creatures.

The premiere exhibit is the Diplodocus Carnegie . A bone digging crew financed by Carnegie dug the 84 foot skeleton out of the dirt in southwestern Wyoming.

The sauropod is nicknamed “Dippy.” The life size dinosaur sculpture in front of the museum captures Dippy as he would have looked in real life.

There are also exhibits that explore the flora and fauna of Pennsylvania and the United States.

The Museum of Natural History is housed in the same building as the Carnegie Museum of Art. There are two cafes onsite. One is quite chic. You can also lounge in the museum’s lovely sculpture garden.

3. Carnegie Science Center

The Carnegie Science Center is one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh for families.

Spread over four floors, the museum has hundreds of interactive exhibits. They explain everything from natural science, to artificial intelligence, to scientific principles, to human anatomy.

Aside from the displays, you can visit a submarine, the Blue Planetarium, the OmniMax Theater, and the sports center. At the later, you can zip line, rock climb, or take a virtual roller coaster ride.

One thing to keep in mind when you purchase your ticket is that there are separate charges for certain attractions. For example, a visit to the submarine is included in your ticket.

But you still have to book a time slot when you check in. Or, you’ll have to wait in line.

The planetarium and OmniMax are also separate charges. Check the schedule to see what’s playing every half hour to hour. Tailor your visit around those time slots.

4. Andy Warhol Museum

The Warhol Museum is my favorite museum in Pittsburgh. It’s a fabulous single artist museum that celebrates Pittsburgh’s hippest native son, Andy Warhol.

As the Prince of Pop, Warhol made himself a world famous artist. Warhol was a true iconoclast and performance artist. He was a hugely significant artist of the second half of the 20th century.

Warhol challenged traditional norms of what constituted art. He cannily merged superficial commerce and fine art.

Warhol was unashamedly obsessed with beauty and fame, how they were linked, and how to capture the duo in a shocking way.

Pittsburgh’s Warhol museum is the only one of its kind in the United States. It’s housed in a chic urban venue. It boasts a veritable treasure trove of Warhol art and archives.

Opened in 1994, the Warhol Museum is an immersive and well curated museum. If you’re a Warholic, you may think you’ve fallen into a fancified version of the factory.

The museum has 7 floors, with the art work displayed in chronological order. Four of them showcase a decade of Warhol art per floor. You start from the top and work your way down. You can see the entire evolution of Warhol’s oeuvre.

You’ll see seminal works from the 1940s to Warhol’s death in 1987, with explanations of Warhol’s creative process. The museum also has a permanent room on the 4th floor for viewing Warho’s films.

There’s gallery after gallery of paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and Warhol’s personal knickknacks.

Some of the drawings are by Warhol’s talented mother, Julia. The Warhol archives document his life with scrapbooks, newspaper articles, photographs, and Warhol’s time capsules (with 300,000 of Warhol’s possesions).

For rabid Warhol fans, Warhol’s grave is also in Pittsburgh in the suburb of Bethel Park.

It’s an active shrine. People are constantly leaving soup cans, Coke bottles, and wigs. A local artist collects the notes people leave in languages from all over the world. 

5. The Mattress Factory

The Mattress Factory is a unique museum. It’s Pittsburgh’s premiere alternative art space and an unusual thing to do in Pittsburgh.

The museum is housed in a former industrial building. It’s become a mecca for wacked out installation art.

The Mattress Factory doesn’t even call itself a museum. Instead, it uses the phrase “Laboratory.”

The space provides an immersive experience, with engaging displays of modern and contemporary art. The museum aims to plunge you into “the creative vision of artists from around the world.” There are both temporary and permanent installations.

The light-bending Infinity Room (shown above) is wildly popular. To see it, you’ll need to don booties or socks because the floors need to be protected.

6. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Need some flower power? Set in beautiful Schenley Park, Phipps Conservatory is a beautiful and tranquil botanical garden. The glass, stone, and steel building is dubbed the “crystal palace.”

Phipps is definitely one of Pittsburgh’s most beautiful must visit attractions. The conservatory has staggeringly lush floral collections, glass art, and themed exhibits.

Phipps Conservatory is one of the few remaining public gardens that still produces full scale season flower shows year round.

The beautiful Outdoor Gardens are free to the public. Inside, the Victorian greenhouse has a wide ranging collection of 14 indoor gardens.

The well manicured exhibits range from rare miniature orchids to massive palm trees. There’s astonishing attention to detail in each room.

In addition to the permanent displays, Phipps has temporary exhibits celebrating each season. This makes Phipps a great place for repeat visits.

Phipps is especially twinkly and beautiful during the winter holidays when it hosts its annual Winter Flower and Garden Light Show .

Phipps also has a beautiful collection of glass art from renowned Seattle glass artist Dale Chihuly.

7. First Presbyterian Church

The beautiful First Presbyterian Church is in downtown Pittsburgh. It was built in 1773. There’s still an active congregation.

The church’s claim to fame is its Tiffany stained glass windows. Tiffany Studios designed 13 of the church’s 26 foot x 7 foot stained glass windows (now insured for $2 million). The windows were hand-painted, making them unique among Tiffany windows.

The Tiffany windows, however, are just a few of the 253 stained and leaded glass windows throughout the sandstone church.

You’ll also find two 80 foot ceiling beams and a pair of 2 ton, 30 foot oak doors in the sanctuary. 

8. Cathedral of Learning

The Cathedral of Learning is one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic landmarks. It was built in a Gothic Revival style. The exterior was polished up in 2007.

The Neo-Gothic cathedral is over 42 stories high. It’s a lone skyscraper in the area that houses many of the University of Pittsburgh’s classes. And, in fact, it’s the second tallest university building in the world.

You enter into the stunning Commons Room. It’s a beautiful church-like three story foyer. The cathedral houses classrooms, administrative offices, and libraries.

The best part of the cathedral is the Nationality Rooms . They are themed class rooms from different time periods around the world. Each room is decorated to honor a specific ethnicity that contributed to Pittsburgh’s development. 

You can’t visit the classrooms when they’re in use. It’s best to visit on the weekend or during summer break. During the holidays, the rooms are dressed up in holiday finery.

9. Heinz Memorial Chapel

Heinz Memorial Chapel is right next to the Cathedral of Learning. It’s a tiny gem. But still one of the most striking churches in Pennsylvania.

The chapel was built between 1933-38. It’s an impressive ode to the Flamboyant Gothic style from the Middle Ages.

The chapel was built with funds donated by Henry John Heinz, the founder of the H.J. Heinz Company.

The chapel honors Heinz and his mother, Anna Margaretta Heinz. Today, it is used by the University of Pittsburgh for a variety of functions, both university related and religious.

The chapel was designed by the same architect responsible for the Cathedral of Learning. Inside are some of the world’s tallest stained glass windows. They’re simply breathtaking, reminiscent of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris .

Because it’s so beautiful, the chapel is a popular place for weddings.

The chapel is only open to the University of Pittsburgh community and not the general public. But you can book a small group tour by emailing the university.

10. Frick Art & Historical Center

Another wonderful Pittsburgh attraction for art lovers is the Frick Pittsburgh . The Frick is a small free museum in the Point Breeze neighborhood.

It’s housed in a lovely Italian Renaissance style building. The museum was built by Helen Clay Frick to house her fine and decorative art collection.

The museum houses a collection of old masters. There’s a special emphasis on the early Renaissance and 18th century French painting. There are some masterpieces by luminaries such as Fragonard and Rubens.

There’s an extremely rare painting by Cimabue, a proto-Renaissance painter from Florence called The Flagellation of Christ . And a sweet nativity scene attributed to the Master of the Scrovegni Chapel Presbytery.

The Frick also hosts some great temporary exhibitions. I recently went to one on Frieda Kahlo and the Victorian Radicals.

11. Clayton Mansion

Along with his swanky NYC digs, Henry Clay Frick had a place in Pittsburgh. It’s an Italianate house called the Clayton Mansion . The house is on the corner of Penn and South Homewood avenues.

The Clayton House is not a grand Italian palazzo like you might find in Venice . But presidents have been entertained in this house-museum.

The museum consists of 23 meticulously restored rooms. There are more than 90% of the original period furnishings.

The Clayton House is undergoing restoration. At the moment, only the first floor is open to the the public.

12. Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall

Soldiers & Sailors is a museum in Oakland. Opened in 1910, it was originally conceived to honor the soldiers and sailors from Allegheny County who served in the Civil War.

The museum has since broadened its scope to include everyone who has served in the US military.

There are four exhibit-filled galleries. You’ll find a vast collection of artifacts, exhibits, and memorabilia that highlight the military history of the region — military uniforms, weapons, flags, medals, and photographs.

The Slave to Soldier exhibit in the Gettysburg Room is a highlight. It explores the experiences of African Americans in the military.

13. Saint Paul Cathedral

St. Paul Cathedral was established in 1834. It’s the principle Catholic church in Pittsburgh, home to over 600,000 Catholics. St. Paul is one of Pittsburgh’s architectural landmarks.

The pile of a church is located on Fifth Avenue between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. It’s a popular wedding venue.

The limestone cathedral was built over 3 years, completed in 1906. St. Paul’s was built in a Gothic Revival style. It has a frilly triple portal like you would find in a cathedral in France .

Inside, there are 186 stained glass windows, double side aisles, and vaulted arches. The cathedral underwent an $8 million restoration in 2005.

14. Saint Anthony Chapel

Saint Anthony Chapel holds the world’s most extensive collection of publicly revered Christian relics outside the Vatican Museums .

The fantastic collection is displayed in handcrafted solid walnut reliquaries, arranged in altars and side areas.

The chapel has been designated by the Pittsburgh culture and foundation of monuments as a historic site. Except for Friday, visitors to Saint Anthony’s may take a one hour guided tour of the chapel each day.

15. PPG Place

The PPG Place Plaza is a one acre space in downtown Pittsburgh. It’s a year round attraction that’s akin to a mini Rockefeller Center.

The plaza is home to the PPG Building, the most interesting modern architecture in Pittsburgh. The beautiful Modern meets Gothic building is a veritable castle of shimmering glass.

During the winter months, there’s an ice rink during the winter months. The plaza is decked out for the holidays.

In summer, there’s a unique water fountain. Water pulses from the surface up to a height of over fifteen feet, with no barrier between the fountain and the rest of the plaza. The water disappears into the plaza surface and is recycled. 

16. Senator John Heinz History Center

The John Heinz History Center is housed in a former icehouse in the Strip District. The history museum is dedicated to telling Pittsburgh’s history from the pre-revolutionary era to the present day.

The museum is packed with kid friendly exhibits. It houses the original set from the TV show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood .

Another permanent exhibit is dedicated to the H.J. Heinz Company. It shows the company’s evolution from a horseradish manufacturer to one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies.

17. Roberto Clemente Museum

I don’t know about my readers. But, in my life, I’ve been a rabid baseball fan. I spent years in fantasy baseball leagues.

During that time, I had a mad crush on Roberto Clemente. Roberto is Pittsburgh’s favorite baseball player.

Deservedly, Clemente has his own museum. The Roberto Clemente Museum showcases the world’s largest exhibited collection of baseball artifacts. Naturally, there’s a focus on the great right fielder.

Clemente came to the Pirates in 1954. He was a great baseball player who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. But his story goes beyond his vaunted stats.

Clemente was a humanitarian. He lost his life en route to help earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

18. Randyland

This quirky Pittsburgh neighborhood is a psychedelic street art dream. Randyland is a recycled art kingdom. It’s a child-like world created by local artist and neighborhood renovator Randy Gilson.

It’s one of the most flamboyant — and free — spectacles in Pittsburgh. Gilson called it his “house of junk and joy.”

Essentially, every square inch of Gilson’s candy colored building is brightly painted and decorated with found objects — flamingos, mannequins, lawn furniture, banana plants, etc. The found object space functions as the home, garden, and artist space for Gilson and fellow creators.

But Randyland isn’t just confined to Gilson’s crazy house. Gilson has spread his artistic influence to all surrounding areas. Gilson’s “streetscapes” have transformed vacant lots into anti-depressant public parks and community gardens.

19. Benedum Center

The Benedum Center is your go to spot for Broadway shows or plays. It’s the centerpiece of Pittsburgh’s cultural district.

The Benedum Center was built in 1928. It was intended to be a “movie palace version of Versailles.”

The theater seats almost 3,000 people. It’s been perfectly restored.

The signature piece is the massive chandelier in the center of the theater. It’s 10 feet high and 12 feet wide.

As befitting a Versailles-wannabe, the Grand Lobby is also a pretty sparkler. There’s original marble and woodwork. The mirrors at the staircase landing are 18 feet high.

20. Heinz Hall

Heinz Hall is a stunning concert hall and showplace. The world class venue is home to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Like the Benedum Center, Heinz Hall is an architectural beauty.

Heinz Hall began life as a movie theater in 1927. Then, it was completely renovated and turned into performing arts venue in 1971.

Heinz Hall is designed and decorated in a French Court style. You’ll see marble, crystal, chandeliers, and gold leaf detailing everywhere.

21. Hike in Fall Run Park

Fall Run Park is a beautiful park north of the city. It’s an uncrowded hiking space.

The out and back trail is a mere one mile long. But the trail leads to a 25 foot drop waterfall.

The trail has been restored. Now, there are wide paths and bridges to help you along.

Not far from the park is the Aspinwall Riverfront Park. I’ve had some great food from a food truck there, Farmer X Baker .

22. Wander in the Strip District

Just shy of the city center is the Strip District. It runs from 11th to 33rd street. The Strip is a must visit attraction in Pittsburgh.

The Strip District was historically a wholesale produce district. Today, it’a a quirky and treasured market and food spot.

You’ll find meat purveyors, specialty shops, and popular bars and restaurants. You’ll also find the odd antique or crafts shop.

The Strip District has some of the same vibes you’d expect in Shoreditch in London . The shops and restaurant are a ragtag assemblage strung down Small Street and Penn Avenue.

The Strip District is a great place to go grocery shopping, especially if you like Italian or specialty ethnic ingredients.

Pennsylvania Macaroni Company is practically an institution. It’s a family run grocery with thousands of items, including a legendary selection of cheeses.

Enrico Biscotti Company is another good spot. If you have a sweet tooth, I love Peace, Love and Little Donuts .

Finally, for the best nightcaps, hop over to Bar Marco . It’s one of the best places to go in Pittsburgh for cocktails.

23. Explore Lawrenceville

Lawrence is a hipster mecca. It’s a gentrifying area of Pittsburgh.

Whenever I go, there’s something new. There’s a constant arts-driven urban revitalization. That makes the neighborhood one of the best places to visit in Pittsburgh.

Lawrenceville is an eminently walkable neighborhood. The main drag is Butler Street. You’ll find loads of vintage and one-of-a-kind shops, along with plenty of restaurants.

Lawrenceville is probably my favorite neighborhood to go for drinks and dinner, as you’ll see in my restaurant listings below.

24. Explore Shadyside

Shadyside is another must visit neighborhood in Pittsburgh. It’s a combination of restored Victorian mansions and student apartments in historic buildings. My daughter lives there right now in an apartment in a colorful Victorian complex.

Shadyside is one of the trendier neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. There are some beautiful places to stroll.

Walnut Street and Ellsworth Avenue offer up yoga studios, bookstores, boutiques, local eateries, and some galleries.

There are recognizable names like Apple, Lululemon, Banana Republic, and Athleta. But there are also independent local boutiques. Toadflax is an utterly adorable store with plants and cool gifts.

Be sure to check out Roslyn Place. It’s a short street off of Ellsworth Avenue.

Roslyn Place is one of the country’s only remaining wooden streets. The tiny cul-de-sac is “paved” using 26,000 oak blocks.

25. Explore South Side

The South Side is one of Pittsburgh’s cool neighborhoods. Not as hip as Lawrenceville, but still cool.

East Carson is the main drag and a designated historic landmark. But there are four micro-neighborhoods in this part of Pittsburgh.

The shopping options are endless. The South Side Works is a large open air complex with a move theater, the Cheesecake Factory, and the Hofbrau House.

You’ll also find class shops like Urban Outfitters, cocktail bars like Acacia , good eateries, and great music venues like The Smiling Moose .

26. Hike in Frick Park

Frick Park is one of my favorite green spaces and a top attraction in Pittsburgh. It’s the perfect bucolic escape from the city. You can hike and bike to your heart’s content in this sanctuary.

The park has hundreds of acres. 644 to be exact. It stretches from the Pointe Breeze neighborhood down to the Monongahela River.

The park has miles of hiking trails, the famous “blue slide” playground, red clay tennis courts, etc. There are several entrances. There’s a parking lot by the tennis courts.

After you’ve got your nature fix, head to Pointe Brugge for a delicious brunch or lunch.

27. Duquesne Incline

Riding the Duquesne Incline is easily one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh. Especially if you want to experience a slice of the city’s long history. And enjoy one of the world’s best urban vistas.

The wooden cable cars were first used to transport workers back in the 1800s. They’ve now been renovated and are open to the public.

Once you arrive at Duquesne, there’s a small onsite museum. You can learn about the history of incline and many details about how the incline operates.

But the best part is the ride up. At the top, you’re treated to gorgeous views of the city from Grandview Overlook in the Mount Washington neighborhood.

Grandview Park probably has the best view Pittsburgh. During the summer, the park hosts movies and music festivals. But no matter what the view is worth it!

If you don’t want to take the incline, just drive up.

Directly across from the Monterey Bay restaurant is a life size bronze statue of George Washington and the Indian leader Guyasuta. The Point of View statue was unveiled in 2006.

28. Monongahela Incline

The other 19th century incline in Pittsburgh is the Monongahela Incline . It’s the oldest and steepest incline in the United States. The incline is three years older than its more famous counterparts in San Francisco.

The incline began operating in 1870. The incline creaks and groans like a wooden rollercoaster.

You hop on board at the lower station near the Smithfield Street Bridge and across the street from Station Square.

Like the Duquesne Incline, customers are deposited on Grandview Avenue.

29. Pittsburgh Bridges

One of the best things about Pittsburgh is that it’s set on three rivers. The city is known as the “City of Bridges.”

There’s over 446 bridges in Pittsburgh. That’s more than any city in the world including Venice .

The most famous golden bridges are an identical trio — the Andy Warhol Bridge, Roberto Clement Bridge, and the Rachel Carson Bridge.

Honestly, my least favorite bridge is the Fort Pitt Bridge. There’s a rapid merging of four lanes of traffic in a few hundred feet.

30. Canton Avenue

Canton Avenue is in Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood. In a city full of hills, Canton is the United States’ steepest street. If a heart pumping hike is what you’re after, you can test your mettle here.

But, be forewarned, Canton Avenue takes no prisoners. This cobblestone beast has a 37 percent grade.

Bikers seem to like the challenge. At least my husband does. He says you need strong legs and a light bike.

Canton Avenue is part of the Dirty Dozen, a grueling bike race in Pittsburgh for hard core climbers.

31. Market Square

Market Square is the center of downtown Pittsburgh.

I think it’s most beautiful during the holidays. There are Christmas markets set up for shopping, just as in Paris or Vienna in the winter.

During the rest of the year, there’s plenty to do at this Pittsburgh attraction. There are art installations, pop-up events, and chairs for lounging and people-watching in the summer.

There are plenty of restaurants on Market Square too. Pizzaiolo Primo is a good Italian spot. Then, there are the classics like Morton’s Steak House and McCormick and Schmicks Seafood.

32. Brew Pubs in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh isn’t Bavaria Germany . By any stretch, having been there. But it still has quite a few craft breweries.

The top spot is the Hofbrauhaus in the South Side. It was designed to emulate the original brewhouse concept launched in Munich Germany .

You’ll be served German beer amids live entertainment from lederhosen-clad performers.

Another popular spot is the Church Brew Works . It’s a microbrewery and restaurant housed in a restored 1902 church. The setting is sublime. But it can be very noisy and crowded.

33. Kennywood

No Pittsburgh post would be complete without a mention of Kennywood . Kennywood is a large amusement park. It’s a favorite attraction in Pittsburgh for kids and teens.

Kennywood has been a Pittsburgh thrill for decades. Its classic rides were built in the early 20th century. A popular throwback is Thunderbolt, a wooden roller coaster. 

The other rides which you can enjoy here include the Pittsburgh plunge water, the Phantom’s Revenge roller coaster, carousels, water rides, a 3D experience, and a 4D theatre and paddle boats. 

You would need to spend at least an entire day here in order to truly enjoy this adventurous Park.

34. Point State Park

The “Point” is where the Monanghela and Allegheny rivers converge. Point State Park is known for its refreshing lush green gardens. It’s also a lovely place to watch the sunset.

The Point is also a historic site. It was a landmark during the French and Indian war of the late 18th century. 

The park contains beautiful riverfront promenades and a 150 tall fountain, which is a great photo opportunity. The park is home to festivals, picnics, and concerts.

The Fort Pitt Museum is situated within the vicinity. Its exhibits tell the story of the early history of Pittsburgh.

35. Schenly Park

Schenley Park is a pretty municipal park in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. In 2011, the park was named as one of the “America’s Coolest City Parks” by the popular travel magazine, Travel + Leisure. 

Schenley was created in 1889 with land donated by heiress Mary Schenley. She was a Pittsburgh-based heiress and philanthropist. 

The park has 456 acres of trails, woods, a lake, and a golf course. It’s surrounded by University of Pittsburgh campus and Carnegie Mellon University campuses. But it’s an oasis of quietude.

The park has many attractions. Those include a plaza, a large pond, a conservatory, tennis courts, soccer field, playgrounds, a public swimming pool, and a golf course.

In the winter, the action shifts to the Schenley Park Skating Rink . The rink is generally open from early November to late March.

36. Sports Venues

Are you a sport fan? Pittsburgh wears its sporting pride proudly with three centrally located arenas. On game days, the populace is clad in the trademark black and gold color scheme used by the Pittsburgh sporting teams.

Heinz Field stadium is the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. Founded in 1933 by Art Rooney, the Steelers are the fifth oldest team in the NFL.

PNC Park is home to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team which dates to the late 1800s. The arena also hosts a variety of concerts and events.

Art Rooney had a lot of clout in the sports word. In the mid 1960s, he successfully made a bid for a National Hockey League franchise. The team was named the “Penguins” to match its PPG Paints Arena called the “Igloo.”

37. Mexican War District

The Mexican War Str e et s  is a beautiful and historic neighborhood with plenty to offer. It’s kind of a gentrified bohemian row house neighborhood with many writers, artists, eclectic personalities and interesting people.

The surrounding streets were named from people and places of the  Mexican-American War , hence the current name, the Mexican War Streets.

From the architecture to the artistic attractions, a whole day can be spent exploring this North Side neighborhood.

Attractions in this district include the Mattress Factory, Randyland, the beautiful architecture, and the popular Commonplace Coffee .

38. City of Asylum

City of Asylum is an organization that gives sanctuary to writers persecuted in their home countries.

A dissident poet from China, Huang Xiang, lived in one of the organization’s houses on Sampsonia Way. Now it’s called “House Poem,” because he painted his anthology on it in Chinese characters.

But the City of Asylum is more than just a writer’s sanctuary. It’s a thriving community that participates with the poetry, art, or music that’s being created in its living spaces.

The organization now has a neighborhood literary center. There, you can enjoy free performances, a cafe, a book store.

39. Canonsburg

Just southwest of the city lies the suburb of Canonsburg. The town is a small quaint borough with plenty to do.

Canonsburg is most well known for its Old Fashioned Christmas event . The state pitches it as “Holiday Hallmark Move-esque location.”

It’s a two day event. Festivities include a tree lighting ceremony, Christmas parade, food truck court, and live entertainment. Naturally, you can meet Santa at the North Pole.

40. Fallingwater

Fallingwater is UNESCO site in Pennsylvania. It was designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright . Fallingwater is likely the most significant building of the 20th century. 

Fallingwater is nestled in a bucolic setting. It sits atop a cascading waterfall.

Fallingwater is eye-grabbing and visually stunning. It’s a marriage of modern architecture and a wild landscape that blurs the line between the indoor and outdoor.

The house is the apotheosis of Wright’s long lasting obsession with nature and a must visit architectural site in the US.

41. Polymath Park: Wright Overnight

If you really want to live the Wright way, head 23 miles down the road to another Wright-designed house, Polymath Park . There, you’ll find four houses designed by Wright.

These homes reflect Wright’s Usonian ethos. The term “Usonian” refers to Wright’s concept of building planned communities of affordable homes.

Wright wanted the small homes to have the same design benefits as a grand mansion. The homes feature native stone, clerestory windows, and Wright’s trademark Arts & Crafts style.

You can stay overnight, go for dinner, or book a guided tour.

42. Boating

Naturally, as a city on three rivers, boating is a popular thing to do in Pittsburgh. There are approximately 30 marinas in Pittsburgh.

The city boasts the second largest number of registered pleasure boats in the country. There are mooring spots in the South Side and North Shore. The water is a great place to watch July 4th fireworks.

If you don’t have your own boat, take a ride on the Gateway Clipper Fleet . It’s based in Station Square. Gateway has five riverboats and an array of sightseeing cruise options.

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh nine years now. And I’m a real foodie.

Years ago, the coolest thing you could do in Pittsburgh was put French fries on your salad or sandwich. Those days are long gone.

Pittsburgh now has serious culinary cred, with a farm to table vibe moving in. In 2019, the city earned the title Food City of the Year.

You can eat your way through Pittsburgh like a herd of goats, the food scene’s that good. The restaurants alone are reasons to visit Pittsburgh.

Here are some must know tips for discovering all the best things to do in Pittsburgh.

1. How To Get To Pittsburgh

If you’re coming from far afield, Pittsburgh has an international airport. From there, you can take a taxi or Uber into the city center. You can also book a one way private transfer or a round trip private transfer , for a quick and efficient trip.

2. Where To Stay in Pittsburgh

I’m a fan of the Kimpton boutique chain. So, I would recommend the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh . It’s a trademark Klimpton with some whimsy and a bold color scheme.

The Distrikt Hotel is another great option. At the District, historic meet modern and posh meet minimalism.

My previous favorite hotel was the Ace Hotel, a place I regularly went for brunch. But the hotelier closed during the pandemic.

The hotel has recently reopened with new management and a new name. It’s now called  Kasa at the Maverick . Of course, you’ll also find a Hilton Garden Inn and a Marriott .

If you want to stay in Oakland near the colleges, check out the Oaklander Hotel .

3. When To Visit Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh has all four seasons to enjoy. So you can pick whichever one best suits you.

Personally, I think the best time to visit Pittsburgh is fall. The weather is perfect, sometimes even surprisingly mild. This year, we had fall colors and 70 degree temperatures in October.

Fall is also fairly dry too, without much rain. It doesn’t really turn chilly until mid November.

As you might expect, the summers are hot and sunny in Pittsburgh. You’ll have long days to get the most out of your sightseeing.

Winter isn’t actually a bad time to visit Pittsburgh either. Pittsburgh doesn’t get frigidly cold like other popular cities.

But you can expect gray skies in winter. Pittsburgh isn’t known for its winter sunshine.

On the upside, there are plenty of holiday activities and fun Christmas things to do in Pittsburgh in winter.

Late spring is a great time to see Pittsburgh’s many attractions. May is the best month. March and April can sometimes be rainy.

4. Getting Around Pittsburgh

I’m not going to lie … Pittsburgh can be a challenging city to get around in. There are hills, uncommon street grids, and loads of one way streets.

The myriad bridges can be insane to traverse. They seem to go everywhere except where you’re headed. If you get in the wrong lane or can’t instantly move four lanes over, you may well be detoured.

Use your phone GPS to get the most accurate directions.

Pittsburgh has limited public transportation. The subway, such as it is, is called the T.

But it doesn’t go to that many places. And the buses are slow. Another option is the hop on hop off tourist bus .

Don’t just hang out in the downtown area, no matter how convenient it is. Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods are what make the city’s “gritty but quirky” vibe shine the brightest.

Here’s what to do on a long weekend in Pittsburgh.

Pennsylvania’s second-largest city has always been fiercely loved by its locals. Now, word of Pittsburgh’s gritty-meets-quirky charm is spreading. Without some guidance, it can be hard to blend the classic must-stops with the latest crop of hot-spot restaurants and still manage to toss in a few off-the-path finds, too. But not to worry, we mapped out all of that and more.

So, pack your comfy walking shoes for a few days of eating well, getting cultured, and crossing lots of bridges. Here’s what to do in Pittsburgh for the perfect three-day weekend.

If you’ve arrived at Pittsburgh International Airport, you’ll be heading into the city through the Fort Pitt Tunnel, so make sure you have your eyes peeled (away from your phone) for the first glimpse of the skyline on the other side. It’s a stunning welcome, one that never gets old, even for locals.

Check in at Kasa The Maverick , formerly the Ace Hotel, or Hotel Indigo in East Liberty, and if you’d rather stay in the area for the evening, walk down South Highland Avenue toward Shadyside, where you’ll likely pass Muddy Waters , an oyster bar with a Cajun-inspired menu, and Mola , a semi-casual sushi spot with cocktails and bubble tea.

If you’re keen on exploring more, take an Uber — about a 10-minute ride — over to Butler Street in Lawrenceville. Here you’ll find some of the best shopping in Pittsburgh; for ‘Burgh-themed gifts, clothes, and other oddities, don’t miss Wildcard , No. 14 Boutique , and the balloon store Von Walter & Funk . You could also take a trip to Coven Brewing , a recent arrival to the craft brew scene opened by two Dancing Gnome veterans.

When it’s time for dinner, you’re just a few blocks from two of the city’s best restaurants. Try The Vandal for casual, contemporary American, or Morcilla for Spanish-style charcuterie and traditional pintxos. Get your nightcap at Allegheny Wine Mixer for great wine in a kitschy, living room-like atmosphere or get your groove on into the midnight hours on the dance floors at Remedy or Spirit. Other great cocktail spots include Bar Botanico in Lawrenceville and Bridges & Bourbon in the Cultural District.

There’s no better place to fuel up for an active day ahead than Pamela’s . Heading to the Strip District location around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. will help you beat the incoming crowd also looking to get their forks on a plate of the diner’s famous crêpe-style hotcakes.

After you’ve cleaned up any stray drops of syrup, spend some time perusing the shops and Old World markets along Penn Avenue for locally crafted wares, gourmet treats, and every kind of Pittsburgh sports fan gear imaginable. Right next door to Pamela's, rent a bike at the POGOH station —  just $4 for every 30 minutes — and pedal toward the trail along the Allegheny River. This path will take you all the way downtown to Point State Park, where a fountain marks the intersection of the three rivers.

You’ll pass four bikeable bridges, and the trail across the river on the North Shore is beautiful, too. If you want to spend more time biking, the ride out to Washington’s Landing is one of the best — about 30 minutes out and back along the river.

Once you make it to the Point, stop for a photo op and a break at the fountain, and then head to Market Square to return your bike and check out downtown. For an early dinner in an Instagram-worthy interior, make a reservation at Tako or go for the wood-fired steak Argentina-style at Gaucho Parilla .

You’re in the perfect place to catch a show or check out a gallery in the Cultural District , but if you’re up for a more panoramic view, take the Wood Street T to Station Square and head up the Monongahela Incline train to watch the sunset above the skyline from the overlook on Mt. Washington. If you’re planning anything romantic for your trip, this is the place to do it.

From there, East Carson Street in the South Side — the main nightlife stretch in the city — is just a few minutes’ drive, and bars like The Urban Tap are sure to be lively until they close at 11 p.m. or later. If you’re thirsty for something a little (OK, a lot) sweeter, The Milk Shake Factory right down the street is open until 10 p.m.

After a hearty brunch at Kelly O's Diner in the Hill District, take an Uber over to the North Side to spend a few hours with contemporary installation art at the Mattress Factory or the Pittsburgh-born Prince of Pop Art at the Andy Warhol Museum . If you have some extra time, spend it strolling the cobblestoned sidewalks of the historic Mexican War District .

And finally, your trip wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the Steel City’s notorious sports culture firsthand. If you can’t score seats at a Steelers game, Pirates tickets are usually pretty affordable for bleacher seats at the beautiful PNC Park. If you try a coleslaw-and-French-fry-piled sandwich from Primanti Brothers for dinner — there are locations at both stadiums—you just might reach peak Pittsburgh.

As the second biggest city in our native state of Pennsylvania and the city we now call home, Pittsburgh is a place that we know very well! At one point it would’ve been fair to say that Pittsburgh was past its prime, but that is no longer the case. Recent years have seen a major influx of young adults and young families, and the city is back on the map as an awesome place to be, and a really cool city to visit.

Pittsburgh is one of the best places to visit in Pennsylvania !

This post will give you the inside scoop on the best things to do in Pittsburgh, help you to figure out the logistics for your trip, and hopefully convince you to make the trip to the Steel City.

The Best Things to Do in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a really unique place, and its history has led to a really cool blend of things to do. From great museums to beloved sports teams and historic sites still in action, there is no shortage of things to do in the Steel City. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it’s a good start to pinning down some of the best things to do in Pittsburgh.

1.  Ride the Duquesne Incline

Back before cars were commonplace, factory workers needed a way to get from their homes to work. The factories are traditionally located along the three rivers, as the easiest way to transport heavy metals is by ship, and the workers’ homes were traditionally up in the hills surrounding the city.

As a result, walking to work was not a great option for most people, and walking home from work was virtually impossible. The city constructed several inclines, or cable cars, to bring people from the hills into the city. 

As owning a car became fairly standard the inclines slowly disappeared, leaving only two functioning inclines in service today. These are both on Mount Washington, and the Duquesne Incline is the much more popular one to ride these days. The incline is almost 150 years old and provides spectacular views of the Pittsburgh skyline.

Additionally, there is a museum of Pittsburgh history located in the station at the top. The fare to ride the Duquesne Incline is the same as the city’s bus fare, which is $2.75.

2. Get a Taste of the Strip District

The Strip District is one of the coolest and most unique neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Made largely of old converted warehouses, the Strip District is the home of ethnic grocery stores, meat and fish markets, Italian restaurants, hip bars, and high-end boutiques ranging from artisan coffee to high-end chocolate.

The Strip District is where you can find ethnic grocery stores, hip bars, artisan coffee, high-end coffee, and more.

As one of the most culturally diverse areas in Pittsburgh and now one of the most popular places to spend a Saturday, the Strip District deserves a visit on your next trip to Pittsburgh. 

There are plenty of places to check out in the Strip District, and everyone has different recommendations. However, I would recommend visiting  Wholey’s Fish Market , Pennsylvania Macaroni Company , and  Allegheny Coffee Company .

Some of the other things on this list, including a couple of museums, are just a quick walk from the heart of the Strip District, too. The Strip District has a little something for everyone, and a stroll through its half-square-mile range is easily one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh. 

3. Check out the Mattress Factory

The Mattress Factory is widely considered to be one of the coolest museums in the city and one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh as a whole.

First things first, no – you will not be going home with a Tempur-pedic or a Sleep Number mattress. The Mattress Factory is a museum of modern art that believes in creating art that can appeal to everyone, or “art you can get into.”

Yes, it is in an old mattress factory. But the Mattress Factory is so much more than just that. The non-profit organization that the Mattress Factory is incorporated through has put in a lot of effort to restore the nearby community in Pittsburgh’s North Shore.

The Mattress Factory has been going strong for almost 50 years now, and it is conveniently located very close to the Strip District.

The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so be sure to take that into account when you visit! Admission costs $20 for adults and $15 for students and senior citizens. 

If you enjoy visiting churches while traveling, Valladolid has plenty more options for you. The Iglesia de San Servacio is located right by the zocalo, and it is possibly the most beautiful church in the entire city. Valladolid is known for its colorful streets and colonial architecture, and many of the most colonial buildings in the city are churches.

4. Go on a Free Walking Tour

No visit to a city is truly complete without a walking tour, and when there are free walking tours on offer, you’d be silly to miss out.

I really love walking tours, because I find that you really don’t know what you don’t know until you know it. Walking tours are a really cool way to learn neat things about the place that you are visiting while also getting a little bit of physical activity.

Going on a walking tour is not just one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh but probably one of the best things to do when you visit any city. When the tour is free, there’s simply no reason not to do it!

5. Explore the Best Museums in Pittsburgh

Many people don’t think of Pittsburgh as a museum city, but you’d be very wrong to overlook the abundance of great museums that this city offers!

The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History are often cited as the two premier options, but there are great museum options of every kind in Pittsburgh and you could spend days checking them all out.

I’ve already mentioned the Mattress Factory, but in addition to that and the Carnegie Museum of Art , the Andy Warhol Museum is a can’t-miss.

If art isn’t really your thing, there are plenty of other museums that you might find more interesting. The Heinz History Center is dedicated to preserving the local legacy and Pittsburgh’s history, the Carrie Furnaces are a really interesting spot to check out, and the Fort Pitt Museum is a must for any history lover, just to name a few.

Regardless of your interest, one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh is to spend at least an afternoon in one of its museums.

6. Take a Trip to Fallingwater

Fallingwater is a house located about an hour and a half southeast of Pittsburgh, meaning that not everybody will want to make the trip out. However, it is a really unique and interesting place to visit, and I definitely recommend taking the time to check it out if you can.

Fallingwater was designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright for one of the wealthiest families in Pittsburgh, and the house itself is really cool. It might be a stretch to call this one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh, given its location 70 miles away, but it really is worth the time if you are already in the area.

Frank Lloyd Wright had a passion for organic architecture – like buildings woven into the natural fabric of the world – and this house is the perfect example of that. It is right on the edge of a small waterfall!

This home has been named the “best all-time work of American architecture” and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you like architecture, you can’t miss this.

7. Wander Through Phipp’s Conservatory

Phipp’s Conservatory is the premier botanical garden in Pittsburgh, and exploring its glasshouse is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. The greenery and flowers at Phipp’s Conservatory are beautiful, and the diversity of plants they have inside is both really interesting and really educational! Seeing the wide range of plants that exist and how different they all can look is a really cool experience.

The Conservatory also has a nice cafe where you can grab a good bite to eat or a nice cup of coffee. When we visited, we even had a glass of wine while talking about how beautiful of a place the conservatory is. It is a wedding reception favorite, and a quick stroll through its gardens will show you why.

8. Head to a Sporting Event

Few cities as small as Pittsburgh have such a prominent sports scene. With just under half a million residents, Pittsburgh is by no means a big city.

However, the Steel City has the Penguins, the Steelers, the Pirates, and some pretty great college sports as well. Sports are very much a part of Pittsburgh culture, and a night out at a sporting event is one of the best things to do in Pittsburgh.

Even if you aren’t much of a sports fan, going to a sporting event is a really good time. Honestly, who doesn’t love good stadium food and the time out with friends and family? Pirates tickets especially are quite cheap, meaning a summer night at the ballpark shouldn’t even put much of a dent in your wallet.

9. Eat Up at the Pickle Festival

Every year in late August, Pittsburgh hosts arguably its biggest event of the year, which is a massive pickle festival. They call it Picklesburgh , and it is an absolute must if you happen to be visiting while it is going on. In fact, Picklesburgh has been named the top specialty food festival in the entire United States for the past two years.

This festival celebrates all things pickled, and it is definitely a unique experience. From food vendors to pickle juice drinking contests, there is always something going on during the three days of pickled fun. Be sure to check their website for information about visiting and future dates.

10. Relax by the Rivers at Point State Park

Point State Park is an outdoor park located at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers. The park is dedicated to the remembrance of the area’s strategic importance during the French and Indian War, where its position on the three rivers led to significant interest and eventual battle.

Point State Park is located on top of where Pittsburgh’s two most important military forts stood – Fort Pitt and Fort Duquesne – and visitors can learn all they want about the conflicts at the Fort Pitt Museum. 

The park is not just about history – it is also just a great place to hang out and socialize. If you are looking for a breath of fresh air during your time in Pittsburgh, make sure to pop over to Point State Park and take in the views of the city and check out the iconic fountain located at the tip of the park. Best Places to Eat in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a great city for foodies to visit, with great restaurants spanning just about every type of cuisine. From fantastic foreign cuisines like Thai and Mexican to some really great waffles, Pittsburgh has it all. Here is a list of some of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh and what you can expect there:

How to Get to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is located about 20-30 minutes outside of the city. The city is in the process of reinventing itself, and the airport is one of the major factors leading that charge as it is often ranked among the top 10 airports in the entire country.

While it is not a massive hub airport, it does offer 50 direct routes, both domestic and international.

To get from the airport into downtown Pittsburgh there is only one public transportation option, which is to take the 28X Airport Flyer bus. This route costs $2.75 and the fare must be paid in exact change. The bus departs every 30 minutes outside of baggage claim door 6 and makes a few stops on the outskirts of the city as well as downtown.

If you don’t want to take the bus and don’t have your own ride, your only other options are to take a taxi or call an Uber. Both of these options tend to cost around $50, but the prices fluctuate heavily.

Pittsburgh International Airport is also served by several budget airlines, including some that made my list of the best American budget airlines .

How to Get around Pittsburgh

BUS | METRO | BIKE | CAR

Pittsburgh is moderately well connected by public transportation. The bus network is pretty extensive with 98 different routes, there is a modest three-line metro system connecting a few different parts of the city, and a large-scale bikeshare program also exists to help you get where you want to go.

Fares for buses and the metro are $2.75, and children under 5 years old ride for free if they are with a fare-paying adult. The best way to plan your public transportation is to use either the Port Authority’s real-time map or the Port Authority’s route map.

Personally, I have never thought of Pittsburgh as a public transportation kind of city. The city is quite spread out for its size, and I see it as much more of a car city.

If you don’t have a car, public transportation will have you covered! But if you do have a car, parking is plentiful and cheap, and the traffic is usually tolerable as long as you avoid tunnels at rush hour.

Is Pittsburgh Worth Visiting?

Pittsburgh is a really unique place, and in recent decades it may not have been very high on many peoples’ bucket lists of places to go. After all, the city did decline a lot from its former glory as the steel hub of the United States.

In the past decade, though, the city has really rebounded and is a vibrant, bustling place to visit filled with very enjoyable and unique things to do. If you’re wondering “is Pittsburgh worth visiting?” hopefully this post has given you the answer. If you are still not convinced and are looking for more reasons to visit Pittsburgh, here are a few:

Pittsburgh’s History and its Former Glory

Nowadays we often forget just how prosperous Pittsburgh used to be, but to put it simply, it was one of the premier cities in the country. Some of the richest and most successful Americans in history were Pittsburgh people, and while the glory of the city may have faded, its legacy certainly has not.

Pittsburgh is jam-packed with historic places to see and things to learn. As the former center of the American steel industry – which was absolutely massive – Pittsburgh will always have a special place in American history.

Pittsburgh’s Renowned Museums

Most of Pittsburgh’s best museums were included on the list above, but I want to explicitly point out here just how remarkable it is that a city of Pittsburgh’s size has so many highly regarded museums – especially art museums.

The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural Science are the most widely known, but the other places that cracked the list are all highly worth visiting as well. Pittsburgh has a very storied past, and places like the Heinz History Center and the Frick House are great testaments to that.

Pittsburgh’s Beloved Sports Teams

Pittsburgh has a really great sports scene, especially for such a small city. Pittsburgh is a city of fewer than 500,000 people, making it a very medium-sized city by American standards. Yet it has an NFL team, an NHL team, and an MLB team.

Pittsburgh sports fans are very into their local teams, and the spirit can be felt on any game day! One really cool feature of all of the Pittsburgh sports teams is that they all wear the same colors, which is quite uncommon around the country.

As the weather starts to warm up and summertime begins, thoughts of a beach vacation start to fill our heads. If you’re lucky enough to live near a beach, then you probably don’t have to worry about packing up the car and driving for hours just to get some sand between your toes.

If you’re in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania , and looking for a nearby beach to take the family for a day trip, we’ve got you covered. Below are 17 of the closest beaches to Pittsburgh, including a lakeside beach, horseback riding on the beach, an ocean beach, and more. So you can make the most of summertime without having to travel too far from home.

Geneva-On-The-Lake is one of the closest beaches to Pittsburgh for families. It is located in northwestern Pennsylvania and is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Pittsburgh. The beach is on Lake Erie and has a wide, sandy shoreline. This is a public beach. You can go canoeing and paddle boarding all day long.

There are also several playgrounds, a pavilion, and a picnic area. People love to go fishing on Lake Erie for smallmouth bass. You can even go ice fishing in the colder months.

Lake Erie is the fourth largest Great Lake, and it’s actually famous for a battle that took place in 1812. Lake Erie even has its very own sea monster called Bessie. Lake Erie is roughly  4000 years old.

Niagara-On-The-Lake is a picturesque town located in the Niagara Region of Ontario. The town is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario and is surrounded by vineyards and orchards. The main street is lined with Victorian-era homes and businesses.

Families can visit the many wineries, shops, restaurants, and parks in the area. There are also a number of historical sites to explore, such as Fort George, which was built during the War of 1812. Don’t forget to check out Niagara Falls while you’re there.

One downside? The water is extra cold.

Just an hour south of Pittsburgh lies one of the state’s most beloved beach towns, Ocean Grove. This quaint little town is situated on a peninsula and is home to some of the best beaches in New Jersey.

Families will love spending a day at the beach here, swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants located right on the boardwalk, so you can make a day of it. You should definitely check out Tent City, Asbury Park, and The Great Auditorium.

Just over an hour’s drive from Pittsburgh, Laurel Hill State Park is a great option for families looking to escape the city for a day. The park offers plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, including fishing, swimming, boating, and hiking.

There are also several playgrounds and picnic areas dotted around the park, making it the perfect spot for a summertime family outing.

If you’re looking for a quick beach getaway from Pittsburgh, Raccoon Creek State Park is the perfect spot. Just an hour’s drive from the city, the park offers a beach (with sand) on the shores of Raccoon Lake, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing.

There are also plenty of hiking and biking trails to explore, as well as a playground and picnic area for the kids.

Bethany Beach, located in Sussex County, Delaware, is one of the closest ocean beaches to Pittsburgh for families. The beach town is a great destination for those looking for a relaxing getaway by the water.

Visitors can enjoy the town’s many shops and restaurants, as well as its Boardwalk and beautiful sandy beaches. Bethany Beach is also known for its fishing, kayaking, and surfing opportunities.

Atlantic City is a beach town located on the Jersey Shore in southeastern New Jersey. It is best known for its boardwalk, casinos, and beaches. The city is also home to the Steel Pier, an amusement park located on the water. Atlantic City is a popular summer destination for families from Pittsburgh.

The drive from Pittsburgh to Atlantic City is about five and a half hours. Families can find plenty of things to do in Atlantic City, from playing on the beach to exploring the boardwalk. There are also several family-friendly casinos in town. Steel Pier is a great place to take the kids, with rides and games for all ages.

Other Jersey shore beaches include Cape May and New Jersey. Both get overly crowded, and the Jersey shore tends to get quite dirty in peak season.

Moraine State Park is a beautiful area located in Portersville. The lake is called  Lake Arthur . The park offers a variety of activities for families, including swimming, hiking, fishing, and picnicking. The scenery is stunning, and the wildlife is abundant. There are also many amenities available at the park, such as restrooms and showers.

There are two beaches in this park. How long is the drive?  45 minutes drive from Pittsburgh.

Lakeview Beach

This beach is situated on the North shore of Moraine State Park.

Pleasant Valley Beach

This sand beach is on the South shore of this park.

Rehoboth Beach is a city on the Delaware coast in the United States. The population was 1,151 at the 2020 census, down from 1,461 at the 2000 census. Rehoboth Beach is part of the Cape Henlopen School District.

It is home to several amusement parks, including Morey’s Piers, and a fun boardwalk with rides. Jungle Jim’s River Safari, and waterparks like Splish Splash and Adventure Island.

Families can also enjoy plenty of activities outside of the parks, such as visiting the Tanger Outlets for some shopping, relaxing on one of the many sandy beaches lining the shore, dining at any of the delicious seafood restaurants, or taking a short drive to Lewes to explore its historic district.

Whatever you do, you’re sure to create lasting memories during your visit to Rehoboth Beach!

Just a few hours south of Pittsburgh, you’ll find the family-friendly beach town of Ocean City. This is a lively city. With its wide beaches, boardwalk full of shops and restaurants, and lively nightlife, there’s something for everyone in this beach town.

When you’re ready to take a break from the sand, check out the nearby Ripley’s Aquarium or take a stroll through the historic downtown district.

Ocean City can get a little crowded, but it’s still a really clean beach vacation area.

Bald Eagle State Park is one of the closest beaches to Pittsburgh for families. The park is located on Lake Erie, about an hour and a half away from Pittsburgh. The beach is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Visitors can swim, fish, picnic, and hike in the park. There are also playgrounds, grills, and a pavilion for rent.

Beltzville State Park is a 2,972-acre state park in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. The centerpiece of the park is Beltzville Lake, a 923-acre man-made lake created by damming Pohopoco Creek. The lake is popular for fishing, boating, and swimming. Other features of the park include 20 miles of hiking trails, a beach, picnicking areas, and a campground.

Beltzville State Park is located about 90 minutes from Pittsburgh. To get there, take I-376 East to Exit 40A (for PA-51 North). Follow PA-51 North for about 30 miles and then turn right onto PA-895 East. Follow PA-895 East for about 6 miles and then turn right onto Pohopoco Drive. The entrance to the park will be on your left.

Poe Valley State Park Beach is a great beach for families. It has a large, sandy beach area with a playground, picnic tables, and grills. There are also plenty of trees for shade. The water is clean and clear, making it perfect for swimming, kayaking, and fishing.

Fun fact? The beach is set on a man-made lake, and you might spot some squirrels while you are walking around. Hungry afterward? Go check out the concession stand, where you will find ice cream, snacks, and other hot food items.

Conneaut Lake is a beach located in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. The lake is approximately 3,200 acres in size and has a maximum depth of around 100 feet. The shoreline of the lake is about 27 miles long.

The beach at Conneaut Lake is open to the public from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. During this time, lifeguards are on duty, and there are plenty of activities for families to enjoy. These activities include swimming, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and playing volleyball.

Conneaut Lake is also home to a water park called SeaWorld Adventure Park. This park features rides and attractions for all ages, including a lazy river and a wave pool.

Just over an hour’s drive from Pittsburgh, Freeport Beach is a great option for families looking to escape the city for a day. The beach has plenty of sand for building sandcastles, and there are also several playgrounds and picnic areas nearby. For those who want to cool off in the water, there is a designated swimming area with a lifeguard on duty.

This area is a 3,200-acre peninsula that juts into Lake Erie. It is Pennsylvania’s only seashore and one of the state’s most popular year-round recreation areas. The site includes a beach with sand, a marina, biking, and hiking trails, a Visitors Center, and many other family-friendly amenities.

Overall there are 13 beaches in this park that you can swim in. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, and there is no admission fee. Parking is available at various locations throughout the park for a small daily fee. There is a guarded beach, so if safety is your number one priority, then this might be the place for you.

Presque Isle State Park offers a variety of activities for families to enjoy, such as picnic areas, so pack a basket. The beach is great for swimming, sunbathing, and building sandcastles.

There are also plenty of opportunities for fishing, boating, and kayaking. Hiking and biking trails wind through the forests and along the shoreline, providing stunning views of Lake Erie. Check out the Presque Isle Lighthouse, built in the 1870s, if you have some spare time. Here you will get to truly understand the history of the area.

The Visitors Center features interactive exhibits about the area’s history and ecology. Whether you’re looking for a day of fun in the sun or a nature-filled adventure, Presque Isle State Park is sure to please everyone in the family!

Want to have the best beach vacation? Some hotels on South Bass island have their own private beaches, but there are also some public beaches on the island. The island falls in Ottowa County, Ohio. It has a population of just under 150 people and is found in Lake Erie.

The two main public beaches on the island are Downtown Beach and Put-In-Bay Beach.

It’s around  360 miles  away from the nearest beach. These would be Rehoboth Beach and Jersey shore beaches.

2024 eclipse guide: How and where to watch the April 8 total solar eclipse in Pennsylvania

A total eclipse of the sun will pass through the sky Monday, April 8, treating spectators to an experience that for many comes around once in a lifetime. Spanning 13 states from Texas to Maine, this will be the last solar eclipse in the contiguous United States for the next 20 years.

Erie in path of totality

Northwestern Pennsylvanians have a front-row seat to the eclipse. Hotels have been booking up steadily since last year, and as of mid-March only 97 of the city's 4,500 available rooms remained.

Eclipse viewing near Pittsburgh

Beaver Valley residents can expect to experience 98% obstruction, resulting in a partial solar eclipse . The Beaver County Library System got in on the eclipse fun, hosting Solar Soiree at the B.F. Jones Memorial Library with the Carnegie Science Center's inflatable planetarium. Call the library to register, or for details, at 724-375-2900.

Eclipse viewing in central Pennsylvania including York, Lebanon

Your best bet to view the eclipse in southcentral Pennsylvania is to, well, hit the road. Traveling to Erie, New York or Ohio will provide the best view of the event all in under a six-hour drive.

The last time central Pennsylvania was in the path of totality was in 1478, so waiting for the next eclipse may not be a viable option .

What to expect in the Poconos

The last time a solar eclipse passed through northeastern Pennsylvania was 99 years ago, in 1925 . The region is not in the path of totality for the April 8th astronomical event, but that doesn't mean there aren't ways to watch.

The Grey Towers National Historic Site, in Milford, has plans to open for patrons to view a partial solar eclipse .

In Bucks County, at the peak of the eclipse the moon will cover 89.5% of the sun. Areas including Cira Green and Fairmount Park will make nice viewing spots.

The one thing you'll want to do is the only thing not to do while driving during solar eclipse

The 2024 solar eclipse will shroud much of the United States in darkness on Monday, leaving many people to wonder: Is it safe to drive during the celestial event?

We know Americans should wear certified eclipse glasses when looking directly at the eclipse. And millions of Americans are in the eclipse's path of totality , the moment that occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun's light from reaching us. During totality, the eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye.

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path. If you plan to drive during this time, you may not only have to contend with traffic , but need to take steps to stay safe.

Here's what to know about driving during the eclipse.

Is it safe to drive during an eclipse?

It's safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse.

"Anyone operating a vehicle should not be attempting to look up at the sky during the eclipse – their eyes should be on the road," said Aixa Diaz, a spokeswoman from AAA.

The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to "find a safe place to park (not on the side of a road or highway) away from other traffic and then wear your eclipse glasses," Diaz said.

Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving

It should go without saying, but authorities are also reminding people to not drive while wearing eclipse glasses .

The Missouri and Texas departments of transportation are both advising drivers to not wear eclipse glasses during the natural phenomenon and to focus on the road.

"Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving," reads a list of safety tips from the Texas department. Thousands people are expected to drive to towns along the path of totality, including Dallas, ahead of the eclipse.

Several state transportation departments  released similar warnings  ahead of the 2017 total solar eclipse. Wyoming's, for example, warned people traveling to the state about how they wouldn't be able to see the road with solar eclipse glasses on.

"When the glasses are worn, a person shouldn’t be able to see anything except the solar eclipse, which is why it is unsafe for a person to wear them when driving," the warning reads.

"Eclipse glasses are for eclipse viewing, not driving. They shouldn’t be treated like normal sunglasses," Diaz said.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

A total solar eclipse is expected to pass through the United States on April 8, 2024, giving stargazers across the country the opportunity to view the celestial phenomenon in which the sun is completely covered by the moon.

The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine. It is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.

Where can you see the total solar eclipse?

The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada. 

The eclipse will enter the United States in Texas, and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Much of the eclipse's visibility depends on the weather. A cloudy day could prevent visitors from seeing the spectacle altogether.

When does the solar eclipse start and end?

The solar eclipse will begin in Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. It will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

The longest duration of totality—which is when the moon completely covers the sun — will be 4 minutes, 28 seconds, near Torreón, Mexico. Most places along the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes.

Where’s the best place to see the total solar eclipse?

The best place to witness the event is along the path of totality. Thirteen states will be along the path of totality, and many towns across the country are preparing for the deluge of visitors— planning eclipse watch parties and events in the days leading up to totality.

In Rochester, NY, the Rochester Museum and Science Center is hosting a multi-day festival that includes a range of events and activities. Russellville, Arkansas will host an event with activities including live music, science presentations, tethered hot-air balloon rides, and telescope viewings.

Map: 4.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes New Jersey

Shake intensity

A light, 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck in New Jersey on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake was felt across the New York City metropolitan area, and from Philadelphia to Boston.

The temblor happened at 10:23 a.m. Eastern about 4 miles north of Whitehouse Station, N.J., data from the agency shows.

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake's reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

Aftershocks in the region

At 5:59 p.m. Eastern on Friday, a light aftershock with a magnitude of 3.8 struck near Gladstone, New Jersey, according to U.S.G.S. (The agency initially gave the quake a preliminary magnitude of 4.0.)

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same general area. Aftershocks are typically minor adjustments along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.

Quakes and aftershocks within 100 miles

Aftershocks can occur days, weeks or even years after the first earthquake. These events can be of equal or larger magnitude to the initial earthquake, and they can continue to affect already damaged locations.

How this quake compares

The U.S.G.S. has logged 188 earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or greater within a 250-mile radius of New York City since 1957. In that timeframe, only seven have had a magnitude at or above 4.5. Today’s quake had the third-highest magnitude in the available data.
