Jamaica Practicalities

Multi-purpose Rfid Organizer Holder

  • U.S. dollars in small denominations for tipping is recommended—even at all-inclusive resorts
  • For an affordable calling option , use “Just Talk” phone cards that can be bought with cash and are sold at kiosks, newsstands and pharmacies.
  • ATMs can be inadequate , so be prepared with travelers’ checks if necessary, and beware of hidden credit card fees while traveling.
  • Know the exchange rate before you go. Inform yourself of the Jamaican dollar value in advance by checking currency exchange rates on xe.com in advance or download the XE app to access during your trip.
The secret to packing light is to create the perfect travel capsule wardrobe which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing!

Jamaica Travel Tips

what-to-wear-in-jamaica

Compass Rose Secret Bra Wallet

  • Jamaica is balmy year-round. Spring can be warm and breezy during late high season and very hot and humid in summer with temperatures ranging from 22C – 31C or 71 F- 88F. March or early spring is a good time to travel — before storms and then hurricane season, which lasts from June to late November.
  • Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a capsule travel wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.
  • Negril’s beaches are the absolute best, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios have the finest resorts on the island, and places like Runaway Bay are quieter.
  • Booking hotel transfers in advance is suggested to ensure a safe and convenient journey to your hotel.
  • You can expect that your baggage will be checked when exiting the country.
  • Don’t forget to bring an anti-theft device such as our Secret Bra Wallet along with luggage with lockable zippers and keep it locked even when staying at a high end resort.

Negril is a great place to go. It rains every day at about 3 p.m. and lasts about 5 minutes.

My husband and I honeymooned on the South Coast in a rural fishing village and have returned to the area many years since. I want to give a shout out to the many beautiful locations and the warm and lovely people who are off the beaten path, in the countryside. Do you have any tips for women who want to venture outside of resort areas and who want a more active vacation in nature (hiking, riverwalks, etc.)?

Zoe

Not sure if you mentioned this in the article, but it’s quite important to note the material. Cotton Cotton Cotton! It’s one of cheapest and most appropriate things for this weather! Also lots and lots of bug spray, the mosquitoes come down very heavily in the evening and nights (even if you apply the bug spray, you may still inhale some mosquitoes)

What to Pack for Jamaica: Outfit Ideas & Packing List

What to Pack For Jamaica

I just returned from visiting Jamaica last month and it was hot, hot, hot! I visited Kingston and Port Antonio in 5 days, 4 nights on a relaxing getaway focused on beautiful natural sights like Frenchman’s Cove, the Blue Lagoon and the coffee-heavy Blue Mountains.

You can read more about my trip itinerary and the top sights I recommend in this post, Rafting on the Rio Grande and Other Must Do Things in Portland, Jamaica .

For short trips under a week, I like to pack with just a carry on. Whether you’re staying at an all-inclusive on Montego Bay or docking in Ocho Rios, read on for my Jamaica packing checklist!

Jamaica Packing List

Day Clothes | I packed a mix of dresses and casual clothes but ended up mostly wearing sundresses over bikins. Jamaica is a very relaxed tropical environment and I only felt the need to slightly dress up during dinner times, when I swapped flip flops for closed toed shoes and shorts for pants. Other than that… relax away!

Swimsuits |  The obvious one and my choice for what to wear all day. Pack a couple suits for lounging around on the beach and water activities. Jamaica is blessed with beautiful waterfalls and rivers and Port Antonio in particular has the most serene lagoons I’ve ever seen!

My go-to stores for bathing suits (both one pieces and bikinis) are Revolve , Nordstrom and Shopbop . They always carry the best range of colors and styles in every price range. I like to pack a mix of one piece swimsuits and bikinis that cover up but still have cut outs and color.

Sunscreen |  The sun is strong in Jamaica and I like to bring both a facial sunscreen and all over body sunscreen. For the face, this Japanese brand is my hands down favorite – it’s non greasy, affordable and non-tacky without any scent. For the body, I love this broad spectrum sunscreen which smells like coconuts and leaves your legs nice and glowy.

Aloe Vera |  I got pretty sunburn on our bamboo raft ride down the Rio Grande. It felt super leisurely (and I loved the floating beer raft) but I should have put on sunscreen beforehand! Aloe vera gel is the key to relieve any pain. I loved this organic version made from cold pressed aloe.

Lip Balm with SPF | An absolute must have to avoid chapped lips! My favorite day balm is Burt’s Bees , and my heavy duty favorite is by French brand Aquaphor .

Bug Spray | There are definitely mosquitoes and bugs around so protect yourself from any potential viruses by bringing along some bug spray in advance. Look for a high level of deet in order to be effective and just make sure to wash your hands with soap and water after applying.

I use this spray if I’m in the woods or a forested area but for regular day time use, I’ve been loving these wrist bands . The bracelets contain a blend of insect repelling oil so you don’t have to apply bug spray directly on your skin. I usually get 2 – one for my wrist and one for the ankle otherwise the range of coverage doesn’t seem to extend across the full body.

Snorkel Gear | If you love water sports and are thinking of snorkeling, pack your own. It’s much cheaper to buy an inexpensive set off Amazon than to rent… not to mention more sanitary. I got this inexpensive snorkel set off Amazon, which comes with its own waterproof bag for easy transport.

Lightweight Beach Towel | Typically hotels will provide towels but I like to bring a small, light weight towel of my own just in case. This is my favorite as it’s made of microfiber and dries quickly – perfect for those times when you only stay overnight in a hotel.

Fun Day Tours in Jamaica

We did a couple tours on our trip and I’d highly recommend 2 in particular: a bamboo raft ride and Blue Lagoon day trip , and a hike up the Blue Mountains to learn about Jamaica’s famous coffee plantations.

Travel Bags, Organizers & Electronics

Carry On Suitcase |  Luckily, Jet Blue offers direct flights from NYC to Kingston and Montego Bay so I could have checked a bag if I wanted to free of charge. (I usually search for flight deals here )

In the end, I decided to travel light and just go with a carry on. I’m currently using this hard shell CalPak carry on which wheels around easily and is quite compact. Inside there’s a zippered section on one half where I like to keep heavier items like shoes and toiletries and on the other side, I mainly keep clothes.

Packing Cubes | I like to group clothing by color or function and pack each group of items snugly in their own packing cube. These are a lifesaver for keeping your suitcase organized in your hotel room and are my number 1 secret to maximize space and function in just a carry on suitcase. I typically reserve one packing cube for all my worn clothes to separate the dirty stuff from my fresh clothes!

This inexpensive 4 piece packing cube set  has nearly 6,500 glowing reviews while several travel blogger friends swear by this set from eBags . Personally I use a set from CalPak which I love. They’re machine washable for easy cleaning and if you have CalPak luggage – they’re perfectly sized for their carry on luggage pieces!

Travel Bottles |  I use  these bottles for shampoo and conditioner  – you can use them to story anything, even skincare products. I also love this inexpensive yet stylish jewelry case to organize earrings, necklaces and any small items like bobby pins + hair ties!

Camera |  I bring a professional DSLR camera and a couple lenses to shoot all the photos you see on this blog. I also bring my spare battery, battery charger and extra SD cards. To keep everything organized, I use a memory card case and a travel accessories case so the wires, chargers and small things don’t get lost.

For underwater photos, I use a GoPro, backdoor floatie and dome. For video, I use a stabilizer and my iphone, along with an external battery. You can find all my gear here .

What to Wear in Jamaica

General style tips.

  • Go for  comfort over style .
  • Casual clothes in  lightweight natural fabrics  (cotton, silk and linen) will work best – it is warm and sunny but not unbearably hot all year round.
  • However  the nights  tend to be a little cooler so a sweater or wrap is worth popping in your case.
  • Daytime essentials  include t-shirts or camisoles, sarong and shorts as most people spend their time on the beach or by the pool.
  • Buy sunscreen (we love the  Riemann P20 range for 10 hour protection) before you arrive as it is expensive here and do wear plenty. Also really important:  sunglasses  and a sunhat.
  • On the beach after dark, hundreds of tiny sand flies come out as the sand cools down; their bites cause terrible itching, so wear plenty of  insect/mosquito repellent  and take some  bite relief cream  – or avoid the beach in the evenings.
  • Mosquitoes  can also be a problem, so use repellent and cover up with long sleeves and pants when you can, particularly in the evenings if you are outdoors. Avoid wearing any scent or perfume.
  • Also be aware that it is  illegal to have army/combat type clothing or print .
  • Pack light  as it's very easy to get clothes laundered.

What Shoes To Pack

  • If you plan to explore the island, take some  lightweight comfy shoes  for walking. We love  Hotter shoes , for total comfort along with style.
  • Be sure to pack some  flat sandals for the beach . We love the  Lindsay Phillips Switch Flops  range – using interchangeable shoe and flip-flop bases with snap-on decorations, you can change your look from day to evening in an instant whilst still packing light.

Clothing Tips for Women

  • Our advice would be to keep  swimwear  to the beach and pool, and cover up with a kaftan or sarong when walking around public areas.
  • For evenings,  dress is casual; ladies tend to wear short summer sundresses – and take a  pashmina  as just after a downpour it cools very quickly but only temporarily.
  • Your pashmina will be a  versatile piece  that will dress up any outfit.
  • And a few well-chosen pieces of  costume jewelry  will transform any outfit too.

Clothing Tips for Men

  • If you're looking for  versatile and stylish beachwear , try the  Madda Fella  range of shirts, shorts, polos and swimwear.
  • For evenings,  dress is mostly casual; long shorts or pants and short-sleeved shirts.
  • But for  dinner at Jamaica Inn  a collared shirt and long pants are expected – definitely no shorts and t-shirts there.

Pack for the Weather

  • May, June, July, August, September, October and November is  officially the rainy season , although it tends to start earlier these days. You do still get lots of sunshine in the rainy season, but it is interrupted by deluges of rain which last for up to 30 minutes at a time. Take a light raincoat and/or small travel umbrella  for these times.
  • We love the Weather+ app – it gives an accurate 6 day forecast for day and night, which when you're planning from home is really helpful. You can keep all the places you've been to too – a nice way to remember your trip 🙂 Download for iPad/iPhone or Android

Regions of Jamaica

  • If you are keen to  trek in the mountains  be sure to pack suitable footwear.
  • Walking up the  Dunn's River Falls  is a popular trip. You  can  do it barefoot and in swimwear, but for a bit more protection we'd opt for shorts and a t-shirt, and dive shoes would be good for your feet (which will get wet!).

Other Things To Pack

  • A lightweight day sack or beach bag will come in handy to carry your  sightseeing essentials.
  • The tap water is safe to drink in the main tourist areas, but if you do tend to buy  bottled water  consider carrying a  LifeStraw Filtration Water Bottle  – fill up from any source and get clean, safe drinking water without wasting plastic bottles.
  • Look after your  mobile phone  with a phone bunjee – it protects against loss, theft and damage.
  • To use  electrical gadgets  you may need a  travel adapter plug , and also a step up voltage converter if your devices are not designed for  local voltage (110V) .
  • If you're aiming to travel with just  carry-on baggage , try the  CabinMax  soft-sided rucksack – it's light, roomy and has plenty of pockets to keep your stuff organized.
  • Avoid paying unexpected  baggage fees  – use an accurate  luggage scale  to ensure you keep within the weight allowance. Don't forget to leave room for  souvenirs  on the way home!  Rum  of course is a popular buy, as are  Blue Mountain coffee ,  spices  and  seasonings . Just remember any liquids must go in your hold luggage. For non-edibles look for local  artworks  and  music CDs .

What You Will Learn (Click to Expand)

Introduction, why is jamaica such a popular travel destination.

Jamaica , known as the birthplace of Reggae and home to stunning waterfalls and sporting legends, is a remarkably charming Caribbean island.

The beautiful beaches, mesmerizing waterfalls, serene backdrops, and superb all-inclusive villas and resorts make it an ideal destination for a vacation.

From families to friends, couples to golf lovers, anyone will find a unique experience on this captivating island.

Whether you’re soaking up the sun along its gorgeous beaches or swimming in the warm Caribbean waters, your Jamaican getaway promises to be exceptional.

In this guide, I’m sharing my Top Jamaica Packing List.

The Best Time to Visit Jamaica

The Ultimate Jamaica Packing List

The best time to plan your visit to Jamaica is between November and mid-December when the island enjoys pleasant weather and isn’t overcrowded with tourists.

From mid-December to April, you can expect stable weather conditions, making these months another great time to travel.

If you’re on a budget, consider traveling between April and May; the weather is still favorable during these months, and hotel rates are relatively lower.

Though meteorological conditions across Jamaica can differ due to its varied terrain, you can generally expect good weather throughout the year, but be prepared for occasional tropical rainfalls.

Remember, while the temperatures in Jamaica remain mostly warm year-round, June is the hottest month, and January is the coolest. However, even in January, the temperature stays at a comfortable 84°F.

In summary, the excellent weather and the diverse experiences offered by Jamaica make it a popular travel choice, regardless of the time of year.

Pre-departure Essentials

Valid passport.

Puerto Rico Travel Tips

Traveling internationally requires organizing your vital documents, including a valid passport.

Jamaican law requires U.S. citizens to carry a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity.

Airlines have the right to deny boarding if your documents aren’t up-to-date, and immigration officials in Jamaica may ask for proof of onward travel, like a return ticket or a ticket to another destination.

Also, keep digital and photocopies (in your email) of your passport, just in case it gets lost or stolen. I also recommend taking pictures of your passport’s information page, showing your photo, passport number, and expiration date as added insurance.

Valid Driver's License

If you’re considering exploring the beautiful island of Jamaica on your own, renting a vehicle could be a great idea. But for that, you need a valid driver’s license.

Did you know you can legally drive in Jamaica with your American driver’s license? As per the traffic rules in Jamaica, you can use a U.S. driver’s license for the first three months of your stay.

In addition, consider having your driver’s license handy even when you are not driving. It is an essential photo ID when you leave your accommodation, and you don’t need to carry your passport.

However, always ensure your driver’s license is valid before departure.

Necessary Travel Documents

travel outfits to jamaica

Before you embark on your journey to Jamaica, having all the necessary travel documents with you is a must.

Apart from your valid passport and driver’s license, here are a few other essential documents to pack:

  • Copy of your e-tickets or boarding passes : Though electronic documents are prevalent, a physical backup can be crucial if your phone battery dies or you can’t access your email.
  • Travel Insurance documents : Ensure you travel with your health and travel insurance documents , as these can be crucial in an emergency. Besides being useful for medical emergencies, your travel insurance can cover trip cancellations, delays, or lost luggage.
  • Photos of essential documents : Photos and scanned copies of all your vital documents like a passport, visa, ID, and insurance card can be a lifesaver if the originals get lost or stolen.
  • Proof of Onward Travel : While not always enforced, immigration officials in Jamaica might ask for proof of your return travel or further travel itinerary, so keep a copy of your return or onward e-ticket accessible.

Remember to store these documents securely in your hand luggage or travel wallet.

Crucial Packing Accessories and Luggage

travel outfits to jamaica

The luggage you select can make or break your travel experience.

Here are essential luggage and packing accessories to consider for your trip to Jamaica:

  • Small Suitcase or Duffle Bag : A suitcase with wheels or a duffle bag is ideal for check-in luggage. Your choice should depend on your travel style and personal preference. Opt for a duffle bag if you prefer a more mobile and lightweight option. On the other hand, if you require more organization and packing space, a small suitcase works great.
  • Backpack or Daypack : This comes in handy for daily excursions. Carrying essentials like water bottles, snacks, portable battery chargers, maps, and more is convenient.
  • Packing Cubes : Often referred to as the ultimate packing hack, packing cubes help keep your clothes segregated and thus minimize packing chaos. The cube system lets you separate your items by type (tops, swimwear, essentials) and effectively separate clean clothes from worn ones.
  • Waterproof Packs and Beach Bags : These are handy for beach holidays. Waterproof bags protect your valuables from water and sand when you’re near the beach or a pool. Beach bags, on the other hand, are perfect for carrying your towel, beach blanket, sunscreen, and other beach necessities.
  • Laundry and Shoe Bags : These are smart additions to your luggage. A separate bag for dirty laundry keeps your clean clothes fresh, and a shoe bag prevents dirt from your shoes from dirtying your clothes.
  • Fast-Dry Towels : These can significantly save on luggage space and come in handy after a swim or a dip in Jamaica’s beautiful waterfalls.

Pack smart, travel light, and prepare for the adventure on this unparalleled Caribbean island.

Appropriate Clothing to Pack for Jamaica

Vacationing in style and comfort.

travel outfits to jamaica

Dressing appropriately when on vacation is crucial. When it comes to vacationing in Jamaica, comfort should be your top priority, along with style.

Here are a few essentials to pack:

  • Light, breathable fabrics : Jamaica is known for its tropical climate, so lightweight fabrics are your best friends. Think cotton, linen, and flowy silhouettes when packing your vacation clothes.
  • Cool vacation tops and shorts : Pack plenty of sleeveless tops, cotton tees, and shorts, considering the tropical heat. If you plan to venture into the island’s rainforests, lightweight long-sleeve tops can protect against insects.
  • Dresses, skirts, and jumpsuits : Bring easy, breezy dresses and skirts for your beach outings. Jumpsuits are perfect for a dressier look in the evenings, giving both comfort and elegance.
  • Jacket or sweater : The evenings can get a bit cool, or if you are visiting upland areas, carry a light jacket or a sweater.

Plan to dress for comfort while considering Jamaican culture’s modesty aspect, especially in non-tourist areas.

Hair Tools Travel Bag

Swimsuits, cover-ups, and quick-dry clothes.

Given that Jamaica is mainly about beautiful beaches and water activities, make sure to pack suitable gear, including swimsuits, cover-ups, and quick-dry clothes.

  • Swimsuits : Your trip to Jamaica wouldn’t be complete without spending time on the beach. So, pack 2-4 swimsuits depending on the length of your trip. This way, you always have a dry one ready while the other is drying.
  • Cover-ups : Instead of changing in and out of your swimsuit, it is much easier just to throw on a cute cover-up. These are easy to pack and will save time getting ready for dinner or drinks by the pool. From sarongs, lightweight beach dresses, and wraps to even loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and pants, these are perfect for a quick transition from beach to bar or restaurant.
  • Quick-dry Clothes : Don’t forget to bring quick-dry shorts and T-shirts, as these come in handy if it rains or you get wet. These are particularly useful for water-related activities such as snorkeling, surfing, or sailing.
  • UV protection clothing : Cloth items with UV protection are excellent for reducing exposure to the sun, especially during activities that leave your back exposed to the sun’s rays.

Always remember: More than the quantity, the versatility of the items you pack matters. Choose clothing you can mix and match.

Here is my list of the Best Beaches in Jamaica .

Weather-Appropriate Shoes and Hats

travel outfits to jamaica

Caribbean weather can be unpredictable, and packing the right footwear for your trip to Jamaica is crucial to match the terrain and weather changes.

Here is a list of shoes that you should consider packing:

  • Comfortable Walking or Hiking Shoes : If you plan to explore Jamaica’s beautiful landscapes and trails, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots will be your best companion.
  • Water Shoes : These often come in useful since many of the island’s top attractions involve water, like the famous Dunns River Falls or Blue Hole, where the terrains can be slippery. A pair of water shoes can help protect your feet.
  • Sandals/Flip Flops : Ideal for lounging by the pool or at the beach. They are also practical for showers in communal areas.
  • Dress Shoes : If you plan to enjoy Jamaica’s nightlife or dine in a more upscale restaurant, consider packing a pair of dress shoes.

In terms of protecting yourself from the sun, consider packing:

  • Sun Hat : Like sunscreen, a good sun hat will offer further protection from the sun. Opt for a wide-brimmed hat for maximum protection, like giving you a buffer in case you forget to reapply sunscreen.
  • Sunglasses : A great accessory that adds to your outfit while protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Raincoat/ Waterproof Jacket : A lightweight, compact, waterproof jacket is a wise addition to your luggage, considering that tropical storms are not uncommon in Jamaica.

By choosing your footwear and sun protection accessories, you can enjoy Jamaica’s various adventures, whether on a hike, at a beach, or during a tropical rain shower.

Essential Electronics to Take to Jamaica

Keeping your gadgets safe and charged.

Saint Lucia Travel Tips

When on vacation in Jamaica, your electronics like phones, tablets, laptops, e-readers, and cameras can keep you entertained, let you capture beautiful memories, guide you throughout your trip, and help you stay connected.

Here are a few tips on how to manage your digital devices and keep them safe:

  • Multi-port Charger : Keeping all your devices in one place can prevent you from forgetting any chargers or devices behind. Opt for a multi-port charger, which allows you to charge multiple devices simultaneously, such as your phone, camera, and e-reader.
  • Surge Protector : Devices can get damaged due to power surges, common in Jamaica. Carrying a portable surge protector keeps your devices safe and allows you to charge multiple devices at once.
  • Battery Pack : A battery pack ensures power backup for your devices, so you don’t spend time looking for an outlet while sightseeing. Make sure the power bank is fully charged before you pack it.
  • Cord Management : Pack your electronic cords in a zippered plastic bag. This way, you can see and find them easily, and they won’t get tangled or lost in your luggage.
  • Waterproof Cases : Waterproof cases or bags for mobile phones and other gadgets will keep them safe during water activities or unexpected rain showers.

Remember: Although gadgets can add extra weight to your luggage, having them can enhance your experience. Therefore, balance your vacation needs versus your gadget needs.

Waterproof Camera and Extra Power Supply

travel outfits to jamaica

Capturing beautiful moments is part of what makes a holiday memorable. If you want to capture Jamaica’s stunning landscapes, a waterproof camera can be the perfect companion.

Here are a few pointers to consider:

  • Invest in a Waterproof Camera: Jamaica offers plenty of water activities. A waterproof camera lets you take stunning photographs even when in the water. High-quality waterproof cameras, such as the GoPro or the DJI Osmo, are designed to help you capture your snorkeling, diving, or surfing adventures without worry.
  • Waterproof Phone Case: If you don’t want to invest in a waterproof camera, a waterproof phone case can also do the job. Opt for a high-quality, waterproof phone case which allows you to take photos or videos underwater without risking any damage to your phone.
  • Extra Batteries and Memory Cards: Nothing is worse than running out of power when you’re about to capture a great shot. Packing extra batteries solves this issue. Likewise, keep an extra memory card handy to ensure you always have space for more photos.
  • Portable Power Bank: Keep your camera and phone charged and ready to go. Lightweight, compact power banks with 10000-15000mAh are perfect travel companions.

In summary, be prepared to capture the stunning sights Jamaica offers at all times. This ensures that you enjoy your time and preserve those lovely moments forever.

Health and Wellness Must-Haves to Bring to Jamaica

Medicine kit and essential medications.

travel outfits to jamaica

When it comes to travel, it’s better to be safe than sorry. A simple yet efficient medical kit with essential medicines and first aid items is an absolute necessity.

Here’s what your medicine kit for a trip to Jamaica should include:

  • Personal Prescriptions : These are crucial, especially if managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, or any other long-term health issues. You should have enough supplies to last throughout your trip.
  • Band-Aids : Whether it’s a minor scrape or a blister from walking, having a pack of band-aids on hand is a good idea.
  • Allergy and Pain Medication : Carry medications for allergies if you’re prone to allergic reactions. Furthermore, include common over-the-counter pain and fever reducers like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
  • Antibiotic Ointment : This helps prevent infections resulting from minor cuts and scrapes.
  • Antiseptic wipes : Ideal for cleaning hands or for the initial cleaning of a wound.
  • Antidiarrheal and Stomach Medicine : Upset stomachs and diarrhea can be common ailments when traveling. Having medication like Pepto-Bismol or Imodium could provide temporary relief before you can access a clinic or a pharmacy.
  • Motion Sickness Pills : If you’re prone to motion sickness on car rides, flights, or boat rides, it’s a good idea to carry some travel sickness tablets with you.
  • Sunburn Relief Lotion : This provides relief from painful sunburns in case you forget to apply sunscreen.
  • Prescription Medication in Original Packaging : If you’re carrying prescription medication, always leave it in its original packaging to avoid issues at customs.

Having these items in your first aid kit can help you handle minor injuries or health problems. However, if you have any serious medical issues while traveling, always seek professional healthcare services.

Sun Protection Items

travel outfits to jamaica

As an island located in the Caribbean Sea, Jamaica receives considerable sunlight throughout the year.

Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays can make your vacation more enjoyable and safe. Here are some sun protection items you should pack for your trip to Jamaica:

  • Sunscreen : Choose a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 and offers broad-spectrum protection, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Although higher SPFs, such as 50 and above, offer marginally better protection, they do not mean you can apply them less frequently. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
  • Sunglasses : Opt for UV-protection sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Sunhat and Protective Clothing : As an added layer of sun protection, use a sunhat with a wide brim and clothing with UV protection. These are especially necessary if you’re planning to be outdoors for prolonged periods.
  • Lip Balm with SPF : While protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, don’t neglect your lips. Choose a lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from sun damage as well.
  • After-sun care : If you end up with overexposure to the sun, an after-sun lotion or aloe vera gel can soothe and hydrate your skin.

Remember, your skin can get dehydrated from the sun, so drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated from the inside.

Insect Repellent and Itch-Relief Products

travel outfits to jamaica

Jamaica’s tropical climate can be a paradise for mosquitoes and other insects. Hence, packing relevant products can help stave off these tiny critters and keep you comfortable during your vacation.

Insect Repellent: The most efficient insect-repellant products generally contain 20% icaridin or 30% oil from lemon eucalyptus. These ingredients help in warding off mosquitoes and ticks without having to use products containing DEET.

Products like bug spray or insect-repellent wipes can be practical and easy to carry. Remember that mosquitoes and other insects can be a concern, especially during the rainy season, so bring repellents to keep them at bay.

Anti-itch Cream: Despite your best efforts, being bitten can sometimes be unavoidable. That’s where an anti-itch cream comes in handy.

Consider packing a small tube of anti-itch creams, such as those offered by Benadryl or Cortaid, to alleviate the discomfort from bug bites.

Packing Tip: Always pack insect repellents in a secured plastic bag to prevent leakage.

Beach Must-Haves When Traveling to Jamaica

A day at the beach in jamaica.

travel outfits to jamaica

A day at a Jamaican beach is a feast for the senses – the rhythmic sound of waves, the breathtaking sight of the turquoise waters, the feeling of soft sand under your feet, the taste of the salty maritime air, and the smell of fresh sea breeze.

Prepare to lounge under the bright sun, swim in perfectly clear Caribbean waters, or possibly venture out for water sports such as snorkeling, jet-skiing, or a tranquil boat tour.

The most popular beaches, like Seven Mile Beach in Negril or Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay, not only boast stunning shorelines but also offer numerous recreational activities.

Perhaps you’d enjoy a serene walk by the shore, followed by a tropical cocktail at a beachfront bar.

Or, maybe you prefer building sandcastles with the children, followed by a family picnic with some local delicacies.

If you’re a water enthusiast, you might be scheduling a diving excursion or a snorkeling session, excited to explore Jamaica’s vibrant marine life.

Just remember, a day at the beach can be as relaxing or as adventurous as you wish to make it.

With a bit of planning (and the right packing), your day at the Jamaican beach can be the highlight of your vacation.

Here are all the Best Things to Do in Jamaica .

Need-to-Have Beach Items

travel outfits to jamaica

Spending a day at the beach in Jamaica involves more than just a swimsuit and flip-flops.

Here are some beach-essential items you should consider packing for your trip:

  • Beach Bag : A large, robust beach bag that can carry all your beach essentials. Consider one with a cooler attached at the bottom that keeps your drinks and snacks chilled. Bonus if it is sand-resistant, allowing you to shake it off swiftly without carrying sand back.
  • Beach Towel and Beach Blanket : Opt for lightweight, easy-to-pack, quick-dry beach towels. Remember that just when you think you don’t need a beach blanket, that’s when you realize you do! Towels are never quite big enough. Choose a lightweight, easy-to-pack beach blanket that will add comfort to your beach day.
  • Waterproof Bag : Perfect for keeping your phone, keys, and other small items dry and safe from sand and water.
  • Sunscreen : Chances are, you’ll be soaking up a lot of sun. Therefore, a sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher is a must. Don’t forget to reapply after every few hours or post-swimming.
  • Snacks and Hydrating Drinks : Pack some snacks and hydrating drinks for when hunger strikes. Hydrating drinks can help replenish lost fluids.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from harmful sun rays. Choose UV-protected sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Entertainment : If you plan on relaxing by the beach, bring along a good novel, magazine, or tablet for some light entertainment.

Remember, these items play a vital role in enhancing your beach day experience, allowing you to bask in the Jamaican sun while being comfortable, hydrated, and entertained.

Hacks to Improve Your Jamaica Experience

travel outfits to jamaica

Traveling to a new place can be challenging, but a few tips and hacks can smooth your path.

Here are ways to enhance your experience in Jamaica:

  • Pre-book Excursions : It might be cheaper and more convenient to pre-book tours and excursions before you get to Jamaica. Various services like Get Your Guide offer pre-booking options.
  • Network with Locals : The locals know their country best. They can provide valuable insights about hidden treasures and non-touristy places to visit.
  • Carry Cash : While credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants, small quaint places, local vendors, and taxi services require cash. So, always carry some cash, preferably in Jamaican dollars.
  • Stay Hydrated and Well-fed : Jamaica has a tropical climate, which can make you lose water faster than usual. Keep a water bottle handy and have local fruits and veggies, as they are refreshing and keep you hydrated.
  • Use Local Transportation : The local transportation system, such as route taxis and minibusses, is an affordable and exciting way of exploring local lives while getting you from point A to B.
  • Try Jamaican Cuisine : Your Jamaican vacation wouldn’t be complete without trying the local cuisine. Treat your taste buds to Jamaican specialties like Ackee and Saltfish, Jerk Chicken, Patty, and the deliciously refreshing Blue Mountain Coffee.

Remember: All you need is a bit of planning, respect for the culture, and an open mind to experience the best of what Jamaica has to offer. Keep it spontaneous!

What Not to Bring on Your Jamaican Vacation

Avoiding overpacking.

Overpacking can transform travel into a burdensome task. Well-packed luggage saves time, space, and energy.

Here are a few tips to avoid overpacking:

  • Plan your Outfits: Know your itinerary and plan your outfits accordingly. Opt for clothes that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits.
  • Roll Instead of Folding: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them not only saves space but also reduces wrinkles.
  • Utilize Packing Cubes: Packing cubes can help in organizing your luggage and squeezing in more items. They keep your clothes tightly packed and prevent them from unfolding.
  • Avoid Too Many Shoes: Shoes tend to take up a lot of space, and the truth is, you probably don’t need as many pairs as you think. Depending on your itinerary, 2-3 pairs of shoes should suffice—a pair for walking, a dressy pair, and a pair of flip-flops or sandals.
  • Limit Toiletries: Hotels often provide basic toiletries so you don’t need to carry everything. If some items are a must, pack travel-sized versions.
  • Limit Electronics: While it might be tempting to take all your gadgets, consider what you’ll use most and only take those.

Remember, the goal is to travel light without forgetting the essentials.

Items Best Left at Home

travel outfits to jamaica

When packing for your next Jamaican adventure, avoiding certain items is crucial, enhancing convenience and keeping you on the right side of local regulations.

Foremost, abstain from taking illegal substances, even if they might be legal in your home country. This includes weed, despite Jamaica’s known affiliation with it.

Similarly, for your peace of mind, it’s best to leave expensive jewelry and valuable items at home. The risk of loss or theft could cast a pall over your well-deserved vacation.

And instead of carrying huge bundles of cash, rely on credit cards or ATM withdrawals as per your requirement; this ensures security and travel ease.

In terms of packing light, your hairdryer and bulky electronic items should stay home , as most Jamaican accommodations provide these amenities.

And leave behind any clothing or accessories unsuitable for a tropical climate – heavy winter coats and boots won’t see much use in the Caribbean sunshine!

Delicious food, friendly people, and fantastic beaches make Jamaica one of the best vacation spots in the Caribbean. It’s also a spot where you want to pack wisely: no one wants to lug a giant suitcase through sand and sun, and Jamaica is best experienced by traveling light.

Whether you plan to watch sunsets in Negril, float around on the Blue Lagoon , or take in the flavors of Kingston, pare down your packing list to the essentials so you can fit everything in a carry on bag .

Packing light for Jamaica is easy to do. This article breaks down everything you need on your Jamaica packing list and what you should leave at home.

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

The Best Backpack for Jamaica

Start your Jamaican journey off right with Tortuga’s Travel Backpack . The Travel Backpack is carry-on sized, which means you won’t get stuck in baggage claim while the beach beckons. Its waterproof sailcloth exterior will also protect your stuff from sudden downpours, while its clamshell opening makes it easy to find what you need.

What to Pack for Jamaica

One of the largest islands in the Caribbean, Jamaica’s diverse landscape and vibrant culture has something to offer everyone from beach bums to foodies to adventure junkies. Your Jamaica packing list will vary slightly depending on what you have planned, but the following tips will come in handy for any kind of trip.

Wear T-Shirts, Tank Tops, and Shorts in Breathable Fabrics

Jamaica is hot year-round, so skip the jeans and keep fabrics light and airy. Remember that in most places in Jamaica, casual is fine. T-shirts , flowy skirts , sundresses , shorts , and linen pants are all fair game.

Bring at least one nicer outfit for going out to eat, especially if you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort where the restaurants often have dress codes.

Pack Multiple Swimsuits and a Cover up

Because Jamaica can be so humid, pack (at least) two bathing suits to give each a chance to fully dry between wears.

Bring a beach cover up, too. Whether this is a sarong or just a dedicated beach tee, you’ll appreciate having something to stave off the sun. On that note:

Stock Up on Sun Protection

The sun’s rays are stronger the closer you get to the equator, and you’ll burn more quickly in Jamaica than you do at home. Pack plenty of sunscreen (preferably reef-safe), sunglasses with UV protection, and a hat. Your lips can burn too, so bring a lip balm with SPF.

Solid sunscreen sticks (like this one from Sun Bum ) are a great choice for carry-on packers because they won’t eat into your TSA liquids limit. You can always buy more sunscreen in Jamaica if you run out, though it’ll likely cost more than it would at home.

Don’t forget a small bottle of aloe vera or other soothing lotion to apply after a long day outside.

Bring Sandals and Water Shoes

Jamaica’s beaches are some of the best in the world, so pack one pair of sandals that can handle water and sand. Toss in an extra pair of nicer sandals, slip-ons, or other more presentable shoes for going out to dinner (and to prevent blisters from wearing the same pair of shoes all week).

If any watersports or waterfall hikes like Dunn’s River Falls are on your itinerary, bring a pair of closed-toe water shoes as well.

Consider a Waterproof Phone Case

I always bring a waterproof phone case with me on beach vacations. They’re cheap, take up almost no space in your bag, and will keep your phone safe while you’re sipping rum punch on a floating tiki bar or cruising on a catamaran .

Most come with lanyards so you won’t accidentally drop your phone in the water, and pictures taken through the case turn out surprisingly well.

Bug Spray and Itch-Relief Cream

Insect-repellent wipes will free up some space in your liquids bag and stave off thirsty mosquitos. Consider a small tube of anti-itch cream as well.

Dry Bag or Laundry Bag

Chances are, you’ll be heading to the airport with some dirty or damp clothing items. Keep these separate from the rest of your stuff with a lightweight dry bag or dedicated laundry bag. A dry bag can protect your stuff on beaches and boats.

Sunset in Jamaica

Jamaica Packing List

This list will cover Jamaican vacations lasting up to a week. Plan to take advantage of your hotel’s laundry service if you’re staying longer.

Clothing and Accessories for Jamaica

  • 3-5 t-shirts or tank tops in breezy, breathable fabrics
  • 2-3 shorts or skirts
  • 1-2 nicer outfits ( sundresses , button-down shirts; some restaurants might require long pants and a blazer for men, so be sure to check dress codes)
  • Underwear for one week (skip the socks unless you plan to hike)
  • 1 pair of flip flops or other sandals that can handle water and sand
  • 1 pair of nicer sandals or shoes
  • 2 swimsuits (at least)
  • 1 beach tote
  • 1 beach cover-up
  • 1 lightweight sweater or jacket (even if you don’t pull it out during your trip, you’ll appreciate it on the flight)

Toiletries for Jamaica

  • Travel-size deodorant
  • Travel-size sunblock
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent wipes or travel-sized bug spray
  • Anti-itch cream
  • Travel-sized aloe vera or other soothing after-sun lotion
  • Tums, Pepto Bismol, or antacid tablets (in case your stomach can’t handle the jerk chicken spice)
  • Travel wallet
  • Headphones (for the plane and falling asleep to podcasts on the beach)
  • Portable battery pack for day trips
  • E-reader loaded up with beach reads
  • Rashguard (if you burn easily and plan to spend long days in the water)
  • Waterproof phone case
  • Quick dry towel
  • Closed-toe water shoes (if you plan on water sports or waterfalls)
  • Sneakers (if you plan on hiking; wear these on the plane to save space)
  • Lightweight drybag

What Not to Pack

  • Blow dryers or hot hair tools. Jamaica is hot and humid, and you’ll (ideally) be jumping in the water every day. Relax and embrace the frizz. Remember, too, that your hotel will likely have a hair dryer available.
  • Heavy terry cloth towels. Most resorts will have towels for free or rent. If you really want to bring your own, stick to a microfiber travel towel or a Turkish towel. These dry more quickly than standard towels and also take up much less space.
  • Hiking boots. You’ll want sturdy, closed-toe shoes to take advantage of the country’s mountain hiking trails, but boots are overkill.
  • Rain jackets. Consider any sudden downpours a chance to cool off.

Jamaica All-Inclusive Resort Packing List

All-inclusive resorts aim to make vacations as stress-free as possible and will likely have everything you need for your trip. This includes basic toiletries and beach towels, so save the space in your luggage . When in doubt, call or head to your resort’s website to see what they’ll have available.

The other thing to keep in mind when staying at an all-inclusive resort is that the on-site restaurants may have strict dress codes. Again, check your resort’s website to see what’s required for entry and swap one of your casual outfits for something more elegant.

Honeymoon Packing List for Jamaica

Chances are, you’ve splurged on a romantic hotel and a fancy dinner or two with your new spouse. Pack a few nice outfits in addition to your beachwear, plus some makeup and shaving supplies, so you can celebrate in style.

Remember a waterproof phone case (or even get a waterproof camera) so you can take plenty of pictures of your first trip as a married couple.

When to Visit Jamaica

Jamaica has a tropical climate year-round, but it’s best to plan your trip to avoid hurricane season. This officially lasts from June to early November, with September and October usually getting hit the hardest. If you must travel then, invest in travel insurance to cover any unforeseen weather problems.

That said, don’t be scared to visit during the rest of the wet season. The rain rarely lasts more than a few hours and you can often score steep discounts on hotels. I experienced only a few hours of rain during my week-long visit in June, and I just used that time to get a relaxing massage at my hotel.

Here’s a quick overview of Jamaica’s weather:

  • The best time to visit Jamaica is from mid-November to mid-December when the hurricane threat has passed, temperatures level off at about 85 degrees, and the holiday travelers/ spring breakers have yet to descend en masse.
  • Jamaica’s dry season lasts from December to May, with another brief drop-off in the rain in July. July is also the hottest month of the year, but it won’t matter all that much when you can jump into the water to cool off.
  • The coolest months are January and February. Cool, of course, is relative; expect daily highs in the 80s.

Whether you want to hike up a mountain, raft down a river, or lounge in the sand with a Red Stripe, Jamaica’s got you covered. Make your trip one to remember by packing light in a carry on bag , preparing for water and heat, and staying sun safe.

What to Pack for Jamaica | Outfit Recap and Vacation Inspo

collage of items for what to pack for Jamaica

Our Trip to Montego Bay

Hello, friends! My husband and I just go back from a 5 day trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica with my family! It was our first time on the island and it will not be our last. Everything was STUNNING. From the coral pink sunsets to the crystal-clear waters or even the perfect weather, I’m already dreaming about when I can go back. I can’t stay in the heat long because of my MS and never really had an issue because of the wind! I’ll be sharing a full hotel review later on, but until then let’s get into my packing list for Jamaica!

What to Pack for Jamaica | Vacation Inspo

I used to share my packing list do’s and don’ts here on the blog and I’ve decided to bring them back. I feel like they’re a lot more helpful than just a simple outfit round-up!

Sun Protection

If you’ve been following me even for a short period of time, you know I don’t play about my skincare routines! Sun damage is the #1 cause of aging. And while I love laying out by the beach as much as the next person, health comes first. Like I mentioned above, the weather was so amazing that we stayed out longer than we ordinarily would. Make sure to pack oversized hats to adequately shield your face and sunglasses, too! Pair it with an SPF 30 or greater ( here are a few of my favorites that won’t leave a white cast) and enjoy that extra vitamin D!

Tropical Prints and Lightweight Fabrics

One of my favorite things to do before I travel to a new place is to create a mood board. It might just be the influencer/creator in me, but it really helps me organize my ideas for the trip! Also, after researching and seeing too many photos with neutral outfits of white, greens, browns, etc. I decided to do something different. Jamaican culture can almost be summed up with one word: BOLD. Bold flavors, bold colors, bold confident men (LOL iykyk). So, you’ll fit right in with a vibrant color palette whether you’re exploring the lush countryside or having a photo shoot at your resort. Lightweight fabrics like linen are also a necessity given the heat!

Versatile Swimwear

A swimsuit should be at the top of your list for any Caribbean vacay. However, the distinction of versatile should be noted. In the age of social media, a lot of swimwear isn’t the best for actually, well, swimming. The country of Jamaica has so many exciting activities to offer that it’s important to be prepared! Excursions with hiking, snorkeling, zip-lining, and horseback riding all typically end with a dip in the ocean (or at the very least a spring). Also, make sure you pack swimsuits that are good for lounging AND a bit more movement, just in case!

Beach Essentials

A lot of the resorts in Jamaica are all-inclusive, so you don’t need to pack too much. However, there are still a few items that are nice to have! A beach bag to transport your things the short distance from your room to the shore. A mini portable fan in case the wind decides to have an off day. And I LOVE these clips to keep your towel secured to your beach chair!

What I WISH I packed | Jamaica Packing List

I’m not sure why I didn’t think I’d need bug spray in a humid, tropical climate. But trust me, you do. They’re not too terrible during the day but first thing in the morning and late at night they come out in droves.

Hiking/Water shoes

And if you’re planning on doing excursions, you’ll definitely want to pack these! While we only ended up doing river rafting, I’m glad because I would’ve been so unprepared. Also, they’re a necessity for most of the top attractions and you’ll get plenty of use out of them!

Foldable Hat

*Black girl hair probs. I found the cutest straw hats to pack on this trip and they ended up not fitting with my butterfly twists! Thank goodness my mom packed this hat I bought her for mother’s day. It fits more like a visor and stayed on despite the strong wind! I saw a lot of floppy hats lost on the resort and was thankful I had this one haha. Plus, it’s way easier to pack than other ones!

I’ll be sharing an itinerary of our time in Jamaica soon, too! If this post is helpful for your next vacay, def let me know!

The Ultimate Guide to Outfits to Wear in Jamaica

The best outfits to wear on your trip to Jamaica combine a casual style with lightweight fabrics to keep you cool. You will want several swimsuits and sundresses or T-shirts during the day, and a few dressier outfits for the evening. Many restaurants in towns like Kingston do require button shirts, slacks, and closed-toe shoes for dinner.

At the beach, you can comfortably wear your favorite styles of swimwear such as a bikini or cute one-piece swimsuit, but make sure to bring a kaftan, sarong, or cover-up when you stroll away from the sand and surf. The overall vibe for your wardrobe can celebrate fun colors and a relaxed style as Jamaica has a vacation feel, especially at the beach!

Casual Style

wear jamaica casual

When you visit Jamaica, plan to wear clothes in a casual style like sundresses, t-shirts and shorts, or swimwear and a coverup. The only time you need to dress up a bit is for an evening out in one of Jamaica’s cities like Kingston. The rest of the time, you will notice a casual and comfortable style worn by residents and fellow tourists alike.

Casual wear includes items like jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, polos, shorts, skirts, sundresses, and sandals. It does not mean athletic or athleisure wear such as sweatpants or hoodies, though--save your hoodie for a chilly morning jog down to the beach, and wear a nicer shirt during the day!

If you want to meet someone special during your trip to Jamaica, you may want to check out 15 simple tips for how to look hot in casual clothes .

Lightweight Fabrics

wear jamaica light fabric

Jamaica stays quite warm year-round, with January temperatures commonly staying near 80℉! This means that wearing clothes made out of lightweight, breathable fabrics will help you feel comfortable during your trip to Jamaica. Great lightweight fabrics include organic cotton or linen.

You can find out how linen keeps you cool and comfortable in hot and humid weather by checking out this list of the advantages of linen for clothing . You may also want to explore sustainably made moisture-wicking synthetic fabric to keep you from feeling sticky and hot on your trip.

Go bold as you pick colors and patterns for your clothing, though! This is a time to celebrate color and fun styles. If you have a choice between a navy blue maxi dress or a hot pink polka dot maxi dress, go with the polka dots!

Long Sleeves for Mosquitos

wear jamaica long sleeve

In the evening, you may encounter swarms of mosquitos or sand flies, especially if you go for a moonlit stroll down the beach. To avoid getting bitten, you should wear long sleeves and long, lightweight pants for evening excursions.

Easy solutions to this problem include carrying a long-sleeve button-up shirt with you to toss over your shoulders when the bugs come out. You could also bring a light jacket or a long-sleeved T-shirt if you don’t mind looking super casual. Check out the 15 best ethical button-up shirts here!

T-Shirts and Shorts

wear jamaica tshirt

You will notice many tourists and locals wearing casual t-shirts and shorts combos during your trip to Jamaica. This practical outfit helps you stay cool in the hot weather! Plus, you want to prioritize comfort while on vacation, and what feels more comfortable than your favorite tees?

While you can wear almost any fun t-shirt design, do not pack anything with a camo or military-looking print. It is actually illegal for anyone outside of the official military to wear camouflage in Jamaica! (As a pro tip, keep this in mind as you select backpacks and duffel bags, too. This is not the time to haul out the camo shoulder bag you scored at a Military Surplus store).

If you need some casual shorts to add to your vacation wardrobe, take a look at the 20 best affordable and cute lounge shorts here.

wear jamaica tank top

Another low-key staple for your Jamaican vacation wardrobe is a selection of cute tank tops. You can match a tank top with shorts, a skirt, or light pants. For a dressier look, pair a tank top with a maxi skirt and nice sandals.

Try statement earrings, a longer tank, and a stylish purse for a day out shopping. Or go low-key with comfy drawstring shorts and a fitted tank for a day lounging in your hotel. You can find the 20 best affordable and sustainable tank tops to consider for your trip here.

Linen Pants

wear jamaica linen

While you certainly can wear jeans during your trip to Jamaica, you may find that light linen pants or shorts feel more comfortable. The denim in jeans is made out of thick twill-weave cotton that can feel damp and clingy in humid weather.

Linen will feel lighter and more breathable on your skin, whether you plan to visit the beach or take a hike during your vacation. You can find out if linen or cotton is better for clothing here.

Hiking Shoes and Backpack

wear jamaica hiking clothes

If you want a true tropical adventure during your trip to Jamaica, you may want to try hiking a famous trail like Dunn’s River Falls to see a gorgeous waterfall. But since you don’t want to hike in your casual beach swimwear, consider packing hiking shoes, a backpack, and comfortable active wear like hiking shorts and a tank top.

Make sure you bring a lightweight long-sleeve garment like a jacket or button-up shirt for your hike as well, in case you encounter a swarm of biting insects.

You can find the 18 best affordable and vegan hiking boots of 2023 here.

wear jamaica sarong

When you leave the beach to go buy lunch, make sure you wrap a colorful sarong around your waist. You can definitely wear your bikini under a sundress or cover up pretty much all day at most locations during your trip. But you do want to put on some type of cover-up when you leave the beach--after all, swimwear styles belong in swimming locations!

If you need more cute ideas for beachy outfits, check out this list of 20+ cute outfit ideas for an amazing beach date .

wear jamaica swimwear

Of course, one of the most important things you should pack for your trip to Jamaica is your favorite swimwear! Jamaica is not a super conservative place, and you should feel comfortable wearing a bikini on the beach if that is your preference. But you should feel equally comfortable in a one-piece or more athletic style of swimwear if that is your preference.

You can find the 13 best affordable and sustainable bikinis of 2023 here.

Swim Cover Up

wear jamaica cover up

Make sure you bring a cute swim cover-up with you to the beach or pool. You may want to hastily wrap it around yourself before a quick jaunt into town if your friends decide to go on a shopping spree.

But you may also want a cover for practical reasons--the sun can get quite hot in Jamaica’s tropical climate, and you can easily drape a wrap or cover over your shoulders to prevent sunburn.

Make sure you buy swimwear and swim covers from brands that use sustainable practices. You can find the 80 best affordable and sustainable swimwear brands here.

wear jamaica sunhat

Another definite necessity for your trip to Jamaica is a stylish sunhat to help you stay cool and avoid getting sunburnt. You can style a broad-brimmed sunhat at the beach with a maxi dress and sandals for a date, or toss a straw boater on for a morning stroll with a jacket and shorts.

If you need help finding the perfect stylish sunhat, check out this list of the 20 best women’s beachwear brands of 2023 !

wear jamaica sunglasses

It makes sense that you will need sunglasses for a hot, tropical vacation destination! A good pair of sunglasses will reduce eye strain and protect you from the bright glare of sunlight on the ocean besides protecting your eyes from strong UV rays.

If you want fashionable and sustainable shades, take a look at this list of the 15 best affordable and sustainable sunglasses .

Flat Sandals

wear jamaica sandals

If you have space in your luggage, you can certainly pack a pair of cute heels or wedges for dinner out in the evening, but for days at the beach, you will want flat sandals so you can walk easily across the sand.

You can pair these practical, cute sandals with a sundress, a bikini and cover-up, or just shorts and a tee. Take a look at the 1 0 best affordable, vegan, minimalist barefoot sandals to get great footwear options for the beach.

wear jamaica sundress

The best way to put together a pretty, practical outfit for your trip to Jamaica is to pack two or three cute sundresses that will fit comfortably over your bikini or swimsuit. Bring a jacket or cover-up for cooler evening strolls, and a pair of comfortable sandals for walking along the beach.

Pick dresses that speak to your favorite themes and colors, like florals, neons, or even prints of cats or superheroes! If you’re in the market for new sundresses, consider the 15 best affordable sundresses made in the USA .

wear jamaica maxi dress

A maxi dress can also feel cool and comfortable at the beach or for a day shopping with your friends for vacation souvenirs! As always, you will want to look for a dress made out of cooling fabric like cotton or linen. Sandals you can easily walk in make a good footwear choice to pair with this long dress.

Check out the 1 5 best affordable maxi dresses made in the USA here.

Polo and Shorts

wear jamaica polo

For guys, a polo and khaki shorts make the perfect outfit to wear in the city or on tourist activities. You can dress down the outfit with sneakers, or go dressier with loafers. At the beach, you can certainly keep things more casual, but you will see people dressed a tad nicer than is common in American cities.

You can find the best organic cotton shorts for men and women here.

Dress Shirt and Slacks

wear jamaica dress shirt

If you plan to eat out much during your stay in Jamaica, you should also bring a dressier set of a button-down and slacks or khakis. Pair this ensemble with nice loafers or dress shoes when you go out in the evening, as the dress code at many sit-down restaurants may require something more formal than your swim trunks!

Take a look at the 15 best affordable chinos and khakis here.

Snorkel Gear

wear jamaica snorkel gear

If you love to snorkel you may want to pack your own gear to bring to Jamaica for your vacation You can rent equipment at some of the beaches, but you will save a lot of money if you bring your own instead.

This holds true for any specialty swim item you may need. For example, if you need a maternity swimsuit, you should get one ahead of time to bring with you instead of trying to shop on-site! You can check out the 1 0 best sustainable maternity swimwear brands here.

Beach Towel

wear jamaica beach towel

Of course, you will need a couple of beach towels to lounge on the beautiful sandy beaches! You can also use your towel as a handy cover when you walk back to your hotel if you forget to bring a jacket or cover-up, or as a hasty replacement for an umbrella if it starts to rain!

As you shop for your beach essentials, do your best to support brands using sustainable practices. For example, take a look at the 10 best affordable swimwear brands made in the USA here.

Closed-Toe Shoes

closed toe shoe wear jamaica

Table of Contents

  • Plan your Jamaican wardrobe wisely to stay cool, comfortable, and stylish.
  • Opt for lightweight fabrics and sun protection accessories like oversized hats and sunglasses.
  • Embrace the vibrant Jamaican culture with tropical prints that reflect the island’s bold colors.
  • Choose versatile swimwear suitable for both lounging and water activities.
  • Don’t forget the beach essentials like a beach bag, portable fan, and towel clips.

Sun Protection and Tropical Prints

When preparing for your Jamaican adventure, it is essential to prioritize sun protection . The tropical climate and abundant sunshine require you to take extra measures to protect your skin from harmful rays. Include oversized hats and sunglasses in your packing list to shield your face and eyes from the intense sun. Sun protection items like these are not only practical but also contribute to your overall style.

Along with sun protection, it is important to choose clothing made from lightweight fabrics for your Jamaica trip. The heat and humidity can make it uncomfortable to wear heavy materials, so opt for breathable fabrics that will keep you cool and comfortable throughout the day. Lightweight fabrics allow for better airflow, preventing you from feeling overheated and sweaty.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant Jamaican culture by incorporating tropical prints into your wardrobe. These bold and colorful patterns reflect the confident and lively atmosphere of the island. From floral to palm leaf designs, tropical prints add a touch of playfulness and authenticity to your outfits. They are perfect for both daytime explorations and evening festivities.

Remember, in Jamaica, the sun shines brightly, making sun protection a necessity. Pair that with tropical prints and lightweight fabrics , and you’ll be ready to enjoy the sunny beaches and vibrant scenery of this tropical paradise.

Versatile Swimwear and Beach Essentials

Versatile Swimwear and Beach Essentials

With Jamaica’s stunning beaches and exciting water activities, having versatile swimwear is a must. We know you want to make the most out of your time in the crystal-clear waters, whether you’re lounging on the beach or exploring underwater wonders. That’s why we recommend packing swimsuits that are suitable for both leisurely sunbathing and engaging in active water sports like snorkeling and horseback riding. Opt for styles that provide the perfect balance of comfort, support, and style.

In addition to swimwear, don’t forget to bring a beach bag to carry all your essentials. A spacious and durable bag will ensure that you have everything you need within reach. It’s also a great idea to pack a portable fan for those windless days when you need a refreshing breeze. This compact accessory will keep you cool and comfortable while you soak up the sun.

When it comes to enjoying a day at the beach, towel clips are an absolute game-changer. These handy accessories will secure your beach chair and prevent your towel from blowing away in the ocean breeze. Say goodbye to constantly repositioning your towel and hello to worry-free relaxation. Whether you’re reading, napping, or simply enjoying the view, towel clips will keep everything in place.

While many resorts in Jamaica offer all-inclusive amenities, bringing your own beach essentials will enhance your beach experience. It’s always good to have your favorite swimwear, beach bag, portable fan, and towel clips readily available. Plus, having these versatile swimwear and beach essentials ensures that you’re prepared for any water activity or beach adventure that comes your way during your Jamaican vacation.

Now that you’re equipped with the best swimwear and beach essentials, you’re ready to dive into the crystal-clear waters of Jamaica. What to Wear in Jamaica | Outfit Recap

Jamaican beach

Let’s recap the essential items to pack for your Jamaican vacation. When it comes to enjoying the beautiful beaches and vibrant culture of Jamaica, having the right outfits is key. As you prepare for your trip, here are some tips to ensure you’re dressed comfortably, stylishly, and ready to embrace the Jamaican spirit.

Sun Protection

When packing for Jamaica, it’s important to prioritize sun protection. The island’s sunny weather calls for hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Shield your face from the sun’s rays with a wide-brimmed hat, and don’t forget to protect your eyes with a stylish pair of sunglasses. Apply sunscreen regularly to keep your skin safe and healthy.

Embrace the Jamaican Vibe

To truly immerse yourself in the vibrant Jamaican culture, consider packing tropical print outfits and lightweight fabrics . These bold and colorful prints reflect the spirit and energy of the island. Opt for breezy dresses, flowy tops, and comfortable shorts made from lightweight materials that will keep you cool in the tropical climate.

Versatile Swimwear

Jamaica is known for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, so having versatile swimwear is a must. Pack swimsuits that are suitable for lounging and for engaging in water activities like snorkeling and swimming. Opt for styles that make you feel confident and comfortable. Don’t forget to bring a cover-up or beach wrap for when you’re not in the water.

Beach Essentials

Make sure you have all the necessary beach essentials for your Jamaican vacation. A spacious beach bag will come in handy for carrying towels, sunscreen, and other items. Consider bringing a portable fan to keep cool on hot days, and towel clips to secure your beach towel to a chair or lounger. These small items can greatly enhance your beach experience.

Dress Stylishly for Your Flight

Lastly, don’t forget to dress stylishly and comfortably for your flight to Jamaica. Opt for lightweight dresses that are easy to move in and won’t wrinkle during your journey. Pair them with comfortable shoes, such as sandals or sneakers, that you can easily slip on and off at security checkpoints. Complete your look with fashionable accessories like a statement necklace or a colorful scarf.

Packing guide and free printable packing list for what to wear in Jamaica.

Jamaica is a beautiful destination to visit year round. The Caribbean sun, delicious food and island vibes make for a wonderful vacation. When thinking about what to pack for Jamaica, clothing wise, think lightweight fabrics, sandals and bathing suits. In addition, it’s important to pack everything you’ll need for beach days, outdoor adventures and any extras you’ll need during your time away.

In this post you’ll find a printable checklist for what to pack for Jamaica as well as recommendations for what outfits and accessories to bring on your vacation.

Before you finalize what to pack for Jamaica, check out my Jamaica vacation outfit guide , here you’ll find tons of outfit inspo!

What to Pack for Jamaica

  • Lightweight sundresses
  • Lightweight skirts and shorts
  • Linen pants
  • Tank tops and lightweight shirts
  • Flowy button down shirts
  • Swimsuits
  • Swimsuit covers
  • In the winter months, especially, it can get chilly and windy at night. You’ll definitely want to pack a sweater or two, especially if you’re going to be out after dark.
  • A pair of heels if you’re going to fancy dinners/events

Cute and casual is the way to go for a trip to Jamaica! Most days, you’ll probably be spending a lot of time in a bathing suit while visiting the beach, pool or rivers, so a few comfortable ones are a must.

Accessories

Vacation is always a great time to wear some fun and colorful jewelry! Personally, I love to wear some cute bracelets and some fun hair accessories, like claw clips or ribbons.

A summer-y purse you can use for shopping, going to dinner, etc. is a must pack as well.

  • Hair ties
  • Hair clips / ribbons
  • Bracelets
  • Necklaces

Accessories to wear in Jamaica on vacation.

One of the top reasons many travelers choose Jamaica is for the beautiful beaches! If you’re anticipating beach and pool days, be sure to pack all of the essentials.

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Kindle /book
  • Beach bag
  • Most hotels/resorts will provide these, but sometimes AirBnbs don’t
  • Bathing suit cover

Adventures and Experiences

If you’re planning on going on any adventures or experiences while in Jamaica, you may want to pack some extra items. For example, if you’re going on a hike to the Blue Hole , you may want workout clothes, like a matching set (in addition to a swimsuit.)

If you’re going ATVing , which I highly recommend, a backpack of sorts, clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and closed toed shoes are helpful.

For swimming in the bioluminescent bay , a wet bag for your swimsuit, a waterproof bag for your phone (to take photos underwater) and water shoes are some optional items to pack.

Think about what activities you’ll be partaking in and add to your packing list accordingly.

  • Quick dry towel
  • Wet bag for bathing suits
  • Water shoes
  • Underwater camera bag
  • Drawstring backpack
  • Workout set

ATVing in Jamaica

Most hotels and resorts will provide shampoo, body wash, conditioner and moisturizer, but if you have preferred brands, definitely bring your own.

In addition, don’t forget sunscreen, a good face wash, and whatever makeup products you’ll use on the trip.

  • Or refillable bottles for your own products
  • Body wash
  • Moisturizer
  • Travel sunscreen
  • Face sunscreen
  • This stuff is amazing!!

Cute hair accessories for vacation.

Jamaica uses the same outlets as North America, so if you’re traveling from Canada, Mexico or the US, you won’t need to bring adaptors. Some hotels also have U.K. plugs, but I wouldn’t rely on this. Instead, definitely pack a couple adaptors.

In addition to adaptors, be sure to pack:

  • Laptop/iPad
  • Laptop/phone chargers
  • Kindle (or books)

Q&A: What to Pack for Jamaica

  • Nights can be cooler in Jamaica, so pants are good to bring, especially in the winter. However, I’d personally opt for a pair of lighter pants (think linen) instead of jeans.
  • A sweater is great for when the sun goes down, especially in the winter months. It can get especially windy on the beach.
  • I didn’t bring bug spray and had no issues with bugs anywhere I traveled in Jamaica. However, many people say it’s super buggy (I guess I just got lucky), so bug spray is probably a good idea. Mosquito season is June-November.

Jamaica is one of the many gems located in the Caribbean. From aquamarine waters to sandy beaches and hidden waterfalls, the beauty of this island is staggering.

After spending several weeks traveling around the island, I quickly learned the essentials that every traveler should consider. I’ve made a list of the top items to bring, what to wear in Jamaica , what NOT to bring, and FAQs to help you plan a successful and memorable trip.

What to Pack for Jamaica – 28 Essentials

1. long-sleeved swim rash guard.

The Jamaican sun is very powerful due to its proximity to the equator and shines bright even in the winter, so a long-sleeved rash guard is the perfect antidote to avoid over-exposure. If you are fair-skinned (like me!) you will be glad to know this one has UPF sun protection of 50+. My wife, who is very olive-skinned, also swears by it because when you are in the Jamaican sun for many hours, it’s easier than you think to get burned.

2. Neck Wallet

Due to the high rate of theft in Jamaica, a neck wallet is a crucial accessory to bring with you on your trip. This neck wallet is ideal when visiting particularly crowded or touristy areas, as it’s large enough to hold your passport, phone, wallet, etc., and can be worn discreetly under your clothes. I can’t stress enough the importance of wearing an inconspicuous neck wallet to safeguard your belongings, especially since purses and wallets are easy targets for petty theft.

3. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Not to scare you, but there is a real security threat in Jamaica and according to Fortinet , there were 19 million cyberattacks in the first half of 2023 alone! When you connect to Wi-Fi in public places such as hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, and airports – you become vulnerable to hackers who can steal your private information, like social security numbers, financial data, and passwords. I learned this the hard way when my credit card number was stolen at our Airbnb on vacation.

A reliable VPN (like NordVPN ) provides you with an added layer of security, so all your sensitive data is safe. It is a safeguard that many people aren’t aware of, but it’s a necessary precaution for any world traveler. We even use a VPN at home! It will also grant you access to websites that may be censored (or even blocked) abroad, like Hulu, Netflix, or YouTube. As an affordable way to surf the web just as you always do, a VPN offers real peace of mind and a truly private connection.

4. Gorgeous Dress

Inevitably, you will want to grab a cocktail or a nice dinner somewhere and a sundress won’t quite cut it. My wife loves this dress and personally owns it in olive green and black. It’s easy to throw on after a long day at the beach, super sexy on all body types, doesn’t wrinkle, and comes in a variety of colors. She also loves that it gives a high-class, expensive look while being surprisingly affordable.

5. Mesh Slip-On Water Shoes

If you plan on hiking Dunn’s Falls, kayaking down the Rio Bueno River, or partaking in other water sports and activities – having closed-toe, slip-on water shoes will be necessary for safety and comfort. These are great for protecting your feet from rocks and coral, helping you move from land to sea with ease. The breathable mesh prevents soggy, sweaty feet which reduces any risk of blisters, and their lightweight design prevents you from sloshing around in heavy boots all day.

6. Travel Insurance for Jamaica

Keep in mind that your domestic provider will not cover you overseas, and a simple transport to the hospital could cost a fortune! Travel insurance is a non-negotiable that many people don’t realize they need until it’s too late. It protects you against common travel misfortunes like baggage loss, theft, flight cancellations, delays, and medical emergencies if you become sick or injured while abroad.

Private hospitals in Jamaica will not accept foreign insurance and I knew someone who had to scrounge up cash after having a heart attack on the island because they refused treatment without upfront payment… You don’t want this to be you and it’s best to get a policy that will reimburse you if you unexpectedly become sick.

Faye is our preferred provider with surprisingly affordable policies and plans to suit all needs. They wire you the money directly to your phone, so there are no surprises, hidden fees, or delays. After being reimbursed when we needed it most, we’re telling all our friends about Faye !

7. Affordable Underwater Camera

We recommend bringing an affordable alternative to a GoPro or DSLR to capture your Jamaican adventure, both in and out of the water. This underwater camera is compact and durable, so it’s perfect to bring with you on all your adventure activities for both photo and video content. Trust me, after your trip, you’ll be glad you brought along a good camera to capture your favorite moments.

8. Discounted Tickets to Jamaica Attractions

Get Your Guide is our go-to booking service for the best local activities and tours. They have top-rated excursions with skip-the-line tickets, allowing you to compare reviews and make the most of your time in paradise.

For a Jamaican getaway, you must do the popular tours, like ziplining over the infamous Dunn River Falls and snorkeling off a catamaran in Montego Bay. Adventurers will be keen on river rafting and ATF-safaris , while anyone can enjoy crowd-pleasers like horseback riding , swimming with dolphins , and discovering the hidden waterfalls around the island.

Our favorite (lesser-known) activities were the bioluminescent lagoon night tour lit by algae known as “sea sparkle” that turns neon blue, and we also enjoyed cruising down the peaceful Great River .

9. Quick-Dry Travel Towel

A microfiber, quick-dry towel is useful for so many activities in Jamaica. Whether you’re at the beach or on a waterfall hike, this towel dries 10x faster than cotton and will come in handy when you need to wick away moisture quickly. Even if you are staying at a resort, you may find this towel to be more practical than the bulky, heavy ones you will receive. Throw it in your daypack and you’ll find yourself using it as a towel, shawl, seat cover, packing cushion, sweat bandana, changing screen, etc.

10. Mosquito Repelling Wristbands

If you are prone to getting bug bites back home, don’t be surprised if you receive double the amount while in Jamaica’s humid climate. From mosquitos to gnats, there are plenty of insects that will want a bite of you. I highly suggest packing these natural mosquito-repelling wristbands in addition to wearing mosquito repellent as an easy precaution against itchy bug bites and potential mosquito-borne illnesses.

11. Hanging Toiletry Bag

Accommodations can often have very small countertops and bathrooms with little to no storage. Instead of suffering through it, this hanging toiletry bag is a game-changer! It prevents spillage and broken bottles from exploding in our bags while also creating a shelf-like system that keeps things off the wet bathroom counter. This minimizes the amount of water that can come into contact with your toiletries, face towels, and electric items like brow razors.

Hang this magical case on any door, hook, or shower pole, and it will fold out to display 4 large internal compartments and 3 smaller external pockets. It’s large enough to hold all of your skincare, haircare, dental, and self-care products. Swiftly fold it away when you’re done and overall, your bathroom experience will be immensely nicer!

12. Lipstick-Size Portable Charger

This item is indispensable to pack any time you travel. If you plan to use your device for navigation, translation, music, or photos – you don’t want to get stuck with a dead phone battery. The power grid can be unpredictable in Jamaica and you may have long days out boating on the water, hiking through the rainforest, and far from any outlets. Bring along a lipstick-sized portable charger that you can easily throw in your purse or daypack to ensure you’ll always have an extra source of power on the go.

13. Luxury Organizers/Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a revolutionary way to stay organized on the road! With a variety of colorful cases in different sizes, you’ll never have to dig through your luggage searching for one specific item again. This particular set will upgrade your travels by allowing you to label (tops, swimwear, essentials, etc.) and keep a grab-and-go cube for excursions. It also comes with separate cases for laundry and shoes, so clean items don’t have to touch street-gunky shoes after a day of exploring.

14. Luggage Straps

Baggage mishandling is not as rare as we’d like… In fact, about 25-million bags were lost or damaged in 2022 alone. Strengthen your suitcases and reinforce the zippers for any blunt-force trauma they may face! These adjustable belts centralize the weight and make-up for any overpacking, able to withstand more than 700-pounds of tension. They’re TSA-friendly if you’re selected for a random search and will speed up the arrivals process with the brightly-colored straps that you’ll recognize from across the room.

15. Kid’s Snorkel & Life Vest

You’ll find that adult scuba and snorkel rentals will be available around the island, but finding options for kids is much more difficult. They may have limited sizes and many won’t fit your child’s face, leading to a miserable experience of saltwater in the eyes. We suggest bringing this full-face snorkel that gives new swimmers more confidence because the mouthpiece sits out of their eye-view and won’t distort their vision. You should also get your own life vests so everyone can safely enjoy the water.

16. Motion Sickness Patches

These patches are discreet little miracle workers that you will absolutely need if you’re prone to motion sickness or sea sickness. We’ve tried countless remedies and always seek natural, symptom-free products. This brand is the best one we’ve found because it prevents the drowsy delirious feeling caused by pill forms like Dramamine. Use these as a preventative measure, before getting on a boat, or at the first sign of nausea – simply stick one behind your ears and feel the (almost) immediate relief.

17. Sand-Resistant Beach Blanket

A lightweight, sand-resistant beach blanket is the best alternative to your everyday fluffy beach towel. This one is our favorite because you can stake it down with anchors to ensure it doesn’t shift in the wind, plus sand slides right off. It gets very compact when folded, but when open, it can hold up to 8 people! The massive size and quality material make it perfect for family excursions, beach days, and picnics.

18. Water Bottle with Filter

While the water in Jamaica is generally safe, there are contaminants, including chlorine, lead, VOCs, pesticides, prescription drugs, and bacteria. For this reason, it is imperative that you invest in a water bottle with a built-in filter. We use the Grayl brand to protect our family because it removes all of the core toxins, as well as sand, sediment, and microplastics. It is a small investment for long-term health and purification; bonus points because it makes water taste noticeably better!

19. Packable “Just in Case” Bag

From fresh molasses and Carribian rum to handmade art – Jamaica has unique souvenirs that you will want to take home with you. This “just in case” bag is for those unplanned purchases you will likely make. It’s a smart way to save yourself carry-on fees for the flight home since it counts as a personal item bag that fits under your seat.

The glory of this particular bag is that it folds compactly when empty. But when full, it can carry your blue mountain coffee, coconut oil, Jamaican rum, handmade clothing, leather goods, local artwork, perfume, spices, and more. Don’t forget the wine wings to protect your glass bottles!

Just in Case bag

20. TSA-Approved Luggage Locks

Your bag will be out of sight at times – whether checking your suitcase for international flights or cruising through the islands, you will have to hand over your bag at some point. I had items stolen from my bag after checking them and learned the hard way that luggage locks are a must. Even for backpacks or staying at hostels, pickpockets will target an unlocked bag; visible locks will prevent thieves from even considering it. This set is TSA-approved and 10x harder to crack than a typical 3-digit lock.

21. Waterproof Phone Case

In Jamaica, you are constantly surrounded by water, whether it be the vast ocean, stunning waterfalls, or rushing rivers. Make sure to protect your phone by bringing along a high-quality waterproof phone case like this one. It allows you to use your touchscreen through the seal, so we use it to record our kids snorkeling and capture some amazing memories that we’ll cherish for a lifetime!

waterproof phone pouch

22. Floating Wrist Straps for Devices

If you plan on bringing a device to put in a waterproof case, you’ll want to ensure its protection by adding a floatation strap! There’s no point in waterproofing your phone or camera just to have it sink to the bottom of the ocean, right? Invest in a few floatation straps to bring with you on your trip. They can be used for electronics, hotel room keys, and anything else you’d prefer not to lose!

Waterproof Cellphone new

23. Windproof Travel Umbrella

During the wet season (summer to autumn), you’ll need to protect yourself from the elements, so a sturdy travel umbrella is an invaluable item to bring on your trip to Jamaica. This one is high-quality and large enough to fit two people underneath without being as heavy as a standard-sized umbrella. During the dry season (winter to spring), use it as a beach umbrella to offer a bit of shade and respite from the heat.

24. Dry Bag

Don’t underestimate the value of a dry bag in a tropical destination. We use ours for kayaking, rafting, tubing, fishing, boating, swimming at the beach, and more. It’s also useful if you’re cruising through the Caribbean and need to take a dingy boat from the ship to a smaller pier (or if you need to walk ashore without your dollars becoming soggy!) This dry bag by earth pak has always kept our items dry, even when fully submerged. Tip: Keep it full of air, fold the top to close, and it will float.

25. Cooling Towel

The Caribbean climate brings warmth year-round. With an annual average low of about 70s F (about 21 °C), a cooling towel is a little luxury that is wonderfully affordable. Simply add water, wring it out, and the towel will drop to 20-30 degrees colder than the outside temperature. It’s so refreshing, easy to use, and lightweight so you can wear it around your neck, shoulders, and head while hiking. It will be your secret to sweet relief , even in Jamaica’s most balmy of weather.

26. Natural Hangover Cure

If there is anything Jamaica is known for, its the world-class rum! Between the Mai Tais, Mudslides, and Tia Marias – you’ll be thankful to have a natural hangover cure. This liver detoxifier will remove the alcohol from your system more quickly through potent vitamins, electrolytes, and pure Dihydromyricetin. Time on vacation is limited, so take 1-2 anytime you drink; you can take another 1-2 in the morning if you’re still feeling fatigued or have a migraine.

27. After-Bite

In Jamaica’s hot, tropical climate, it’s important to take every method of defense against mosquitoes. That said, no matter how hard you try, it’s likely you’ll end up with at least a few bug bites by the end of your trip. Don’t make the situation worse by scratching them or risking permanent scars, instead use After Bite to soothe your skin and avoid all the unpleasant itching that comes with mosquito bites.

/After Bite

28. Beach Bag

Last but not least, any tropical destination demands a beach bag. This one is stellar because it has a cooler attached to the bottom that you can zip on or off. We bring along a travel towel , reef-safe sunscreen , snorkels , camera , change of clothes, etc., and use the insulated cooler to keep our drinks and snacks chilled through long afternoons in the sun. It’s also sand-resistant, allowing you to swiftly shake it off so you never travel home with grains of sand ever again!

What should I wear in Jamaica?

What you should wear in Jamaica depends on the activities you will be doing and what areas of the island you will be visiting. For the most part, Jamaica is a warm, humid and a pretty casual country. When deciding on items to bring, think breathable and lightweight.

jamaican musicians wearing casual clothes

What NOT to Bring to Jamaica

1. don't bring more than one pair of jeans.

If you do decide to bring jeans, make sure you only bring one pair, they take a long time to dry and are not comfortable to wear in the heat!

2. DON'T bring expensive jewelry

The risk of losing items on the beach or due to theft is too high! There is no need to wear expensive items in Jamaica. You will only draw unwanted attention to yourself.

3. DON'T bring any valuables

Jamaica is known for high rates of theft so think twice before bringing all those electronics and other valuables.

4. DON'T bring lots of cash

Once again this cannot be stressed enough! There is no need to carry large amounts of cash on you. Take what you need with you and leave the rest in your hotel room safe or simply withdraw from the ATM in small increments.

5. DON'T bring your phone or electronics without a proper waterproof case!

Water will win every time so make sure you purchase the proper waterproofing accessories you will need for any electronics you bring to Jamaica.

6. DON'T bring boots or sneakers

Unless you plan on doing some extensive hiking in the mountains there is really no need to bring boots or sneakers. I myself did backpack around Jamaica and found that my hiking sandals and an extra pair of flip flops were all I needed.

7. DON'T bring too many clothes

In Jamaica you will most likely find yourself living in your swimsuit and guaranteed there will be clothing your bag you will never wear. Pack light, save room for the things you purchase while there!

DO NOT wear boots – unless you plan on doing some serious trekking in the mountains there is no need to wear boots in Jamaica. They are heavy and hot on your feet.

DO NOT wear any expensive jewelry. I am mostly addressing the ladies here. If you do want to accessorize your outfit make sure it’s with cheap jewelry that you won’t mind if you lose. Avoid anything made from silver and gold and any precious gems.

DO NOT wear tight fitting clothing. Jamaica is all about enjoying yourself and being comfortable!

What to wear to the beach: When you think of Jamaica, beautiful white sand beaches instantly come to mind. Jamaica’s beaches live up to all the hype, clear blue water and warm sand make for a serene beach going experience. When going to the beach make sure to bring all the necessities to maximize your time and experience! If you are staying at a resort ask to rent gear for snorkeling- there is always something to see under the water!

Beachwear for women: ladies put on your bikini, a cute coverup and some sandals and you are good to go! Bring or wear a hat to protect your scalp from getting sunburnt, depending on your skin it can be very easy to burn even with sunscreen on and you don’t want to get a horrible sunburn on your first day out! If you have fair skin wear a hat and a UV sun guard top for at least part of the time you are at the beach. Bring a beach tote to carry all your essentials and make sure you pack sunscreen, some leave in conditioner to replenish your locks and most importantly water!

Beachwear for men: a tank top, boardshorts and some flip flops will be your staples while in Jamaica. If you haven’t gotten a good base tan yet consider wearing a UV sun guard shirt and a hat to avoid getting burnt. Wear a Speedo if you are going for that full body tan, you won’t be the only one! Make sure you pack a bag with sunscreen, water and maybe even a few beers.

What to wear to go out: Overall, Jamaica is a pretty casual place, however in large cities such as Kingston there are many fine dining establishments where you will want to dress up. The humid climate makes fabric choices highly important. When deciding on an outfit to wear out to dinner or a night out on the town, chose something that is lightweight, breathable and most importantly, comfortable. For women, opt for wearing a patterned maxi dress paired with sandals or an open toed wedge. For men, pair some khaki shorts with a nice linen button down top and some sandals.

What to wear on hikes/waterfall trips: If you are planning any outdoor hikes or excursions make sure to avoid wearing cotton and chose quick drying athletic fabrics instead. You want clothes that are light weight, breathable and will dry fast in case you get wet. Make sure to bring a quick dry towel as it will come in handy for drying off after swimming or wiping sweat away. Pack a day bag with some snacks, beverages, sunscreen and bug repellent.

For women, if you know you are going to a waterfall to swim wear your swimsuit as your base and pair with comfortable athletic shorts and a sporty tank top. Wear some comfortable sandals like Chocos or Keens that you can walk around in even while wet without chafing.

For men, wear some boardshorts or quick dry hiking shorts, an athletic t shirt that you know absorbs sweat well and some comfortable water shoes or sandals.

Seasons of Jamaica

Jamaica essentially has two seasons; hot & rainy. The hot season runs from December to mid-April and is known as the high time for travel. The rainy season or the low season runs from October to November and while still very much warm you will encounter more tropical rain but lower prices at hotels, resorts and even on airfare.

Hurricane season

Faqs about a jamaica vacation, 1. how safe is jamaica.

Jamaican beach

The island does have a notorious reputation for petty theft and assault, however, you should not let this deter you from traveling to Jamaica. If you are vigilant and practice “street smarts” you shouldn’t run into any trouble. It is important to stay in areas where there are plenty of people around and carry minimal amounts of cash.

There are some areas in Kingston, Negril and Montego bay that are considered to have a higher risk of crime and violence. It is important to avoid walking around after dark and never venture out alone. Be leery of vendors who try to show you products in a separate location.

2. Do I need a Visa?

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada you do not need a tourist Visa to enter Jamaica if you are staying less than 6 months. Check on the Jamaican consulate website for more detailed information regarding Visas. It is also a good idea to check the US State Department website for travel notices if you are an American citizen.

3. How expensive is Jamaica?

jamaica mountains

$1 equals $132 Jamaican dollars. The exchange rate fluctuates but overall Jamaica is inexpensive to visit. If you travel during the high season expect an increase in room rates for hotels and activities. Resorts are in a league of their own but basic hotel rooms or a room in a guest house costs between $40-60 a night, a basic meal can range from $3-20 depending on the restaurant and a bottle of Red Strip beer costs around $1.20.

4. What is jerk?

Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica where meat is dry-rubbed or wet marinated with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice/sauce. Jerk seasoning is traditionally applied to pork and chicken and it is delicious!

5. What are the differences between taxis?

jamaica coast

In Jamaica there are licensed taxis and unlicensed taxis. Licensed taxis have a red license plate with white numbers and their rates are regulated by the Transportation Authority. Unlicensed taxis are not regulated by the state and are unmarked. You will spot them when a driver in a normal looking unmarked car tries to flag you down and offer you his services. It is always best to take the taxis that are regulated, they are safer.

6. What language is spoken in Jamaica?

English is the official language of Jamaica; however, a large majority of people speak Jamaican Creole or Patois. Jamaican Creole can best be described as a mixture of English and West African languages.

7. What is a normal Jamaican meal?

jamaican jerk chicken

The national dish of Jamaica is Ackee and Saltfish. Most people in Jamaica like to eat this combo as a breakfast dish. Ackee is a fruit that grows locally on the island and it is a must try! The dish is served with dumplings that are either fried or boiled. The saltfish is cooked in a small amount of oil with peppers and onions. Another popular dish is hot porridge for breakfast as well as a boiled banana. Boiled bananas are starchy and no longer they have their sweet taste but are often served with meals.

Fresh fruit juice is also common, my favorite that I tried was a carrot- ginger blend. Also some famous jerk chicken served with a side of rice is a popular dinner that you can find almost anywhere.

8. What’s this about cockroaches?

While visiting the island don’t be surprised if you encounter something scuttling about…these are just your local cockroaches and you will see them! They are harmless but if you are not accustomed to seeing them the first experience can be a little unsettling.

9. Can I drink the tap water?

jamaican swimming hole

The tap water in Jamaica is safe to drink. In some less developed rural areas it would be best to bring bottled water but for the most part water on the island is perfectly safe to drink. In fact, Jamaica has some of the best drinking water compared to other Caribbean nations. We recommend bringing your own filtered water bottle to ensure you have autonomy over the purity of your water.

10. Do I need to tip in restaurants?

A 10% tip is normal in hotels and restaurants. Check your bill carefully – some restaurants automatically add a 10% to 15% gratuity. Some all-inclusive resorts do not allow guests to tip. Outside of Kingston, taxi drivers often ask for tips, but it is not required.

Temperature in Jamaica

You’re likely on your way to Jamaica because of the beach and sunny weather and that’s what you should expect year round. This graph gives you an overview of Montego Bay in the north coast of Jamaica’s average high and low temperature by month:

montego bay average temperature

July and August are typically the hottest months of the year, followed by June and September, with most months following closely behind.

Rainfall in Jamaica

The wettest season in the Montego Bay area of Jamaica is autumn and winter, with October being the month with the most rainfall followed by November.

average rainfall in montego bay

What’s the rain really like? I visited Montego Bay in November and my phone’s weather app would show rain for about one to three hours during the day. During these hours in the afternoon it did rain, but more like a light drizzle and not very consistently. Plus, you might be in the pool or ocean so you’ll be wet anyway.

What to Pack

  • One suitcase or large backpack
  • Daypack for everyday use

Victorinox Spectra Carry-On Luggage at JFK airport

You won’t need to bring big bulky sweaters and jackets to Jamaica. Your clothes will be lighter and thinner so try fitting it all in a carry on bag like one of Victorinox’s lightweight carry on roller suitcases, the Victorinox Spectra Carry-On .

But if you’re a heavy packer, prefer to bring several options of every outfit or are staying for an extended amount of time, bring a large suitcase. Most visitors to Jamaica will stay at a resort and remain there. So you can bring this large suitcase like the Dakine Split Roller DLX Bag and leave it in your room for the duration of your stay. No need to lug it around everywhere from destination to destination like in other countries where you may encounter an on the go style of traveling.

What to Bring to Jamaica : The Ultimate packing list!

First-time visitors to Jamaica frequently ask us what to bring to Jamaica.

We have tried to compile a comprehensive list of things to take when you are packing for a trip to Jamaica.

travel outfits to jamaica

If you are a bit confused about what to take to Jamaica on vacation? Hopefully, our list below will help you decide what to pack for Jamaica.

What to pack on your trip to Jamaica

First-time visitors to Jamaica frequently ask us what to bring to Jamaica. We have tried to compile a comprehensive list of things to take when you are packing for a trip to Jamaica.

Other than the obvious things such as your passport and plane ticket. There are a few other pertinent documents you can take with you on your next vacation to Jamaica.

  • A copy of your passport
  • Book (for the plane and beach)
  • Credit Card
  • Phone number list
  • Photocopied ID/passports
  • Picture ID (for example a drivers license)
  • Health insurance Information

What to wear in Jamaica

We know you are on vacation and your most pressing concern for attire is the many swimsuits you will wear on the beach.

When trying to decide what to bring to Jamaica, the main thing that comes up is your attire.

Here are few clothing items you might want to bring with you on vacation:

  • Water shoes or Old sneakers (it will save you the hassle of having to rent them at the various attractions you visit)
  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • If you are staying in the hills bring a shawl or jacket. It tends to get a bit chilly in the mountainous areas of Jamaica.
  • Some restaurants have dress codes, so for women bring a nice dress and for men bring some slacks.
  • Most rainfall occurs on the eastern coast of the island (Portland) and the rainy season is from May to October so bring a raincoat or jacket if you are traveling during this time period.
  • The temperature can go up to the high 90’s Fahrenheit during the summer months so bring along shorts, sun dresses and other lightweight, breathable clothing.
  • Bring a good beach bag
  • Bring a knapsack. It will come in handy if you plan to go on excursions in Jamaica.
  • Bring a good hat. For the men out there who are bald remember you have to protect your head.
  • Good sunglasses
  • Toiletries and Medication

The majority of the products you are used to seeing in the USA (or other countries) are readily available in Jamaica.

However, to avoid shopping for miscellaneous items on a vacation here are a few things you should bring:

  • If you have any serious food allergies remember to bring your Epi pen. There might not be a hospital nearby.
  • Bring bug spray, you are in the tropics so expect to see mosquitoes or sand flies.
  • Suntan Lotion (The Jamaican sun can be unforgiving)
  • Aloe Vera Gel – This is a great idea, especially if you get sunburned
  • Prescription medication – Make sure you bring an adequate supply with you. If you need to fill a prescription you will need a prescription from a local doctor.

Bringing Gifts for Jamaicans

There are a few hotels that have their own foundations. A few that come to mind are Goldeneye in Orachabessa, The Rockhouse in Negril and the Sandals Hotel chain.

Their foundations are usually connected with schools in the community, so school supplies would be a great idea. If you are bringing gifts for a Jamaican friend, a few gift ideas are colognes or perfumes or clothing items.

Spending Money

If you are trying to figure out the exchange rate a very accurate tool to use is the Oanda Converter. Do not change money at the airport or your hotel (they usually offer much lower exchange rates).

You can withdraw Jamaican money at your ATM.  Keep in mind however that you will be charged extra in fees.  The main banks in Jamaica are the National Commercial Bank and Scotiabank Jamaica.

Try and find out beforehand if your bank has any arrangements with local banks regarding bank fees.  If this is possible you will find that the bank withdrawal fees are waived.

You can also use a Cambio to exchange US currency. These Cambios offer higher rates than the banks. Keep in mind most places accept US dollars.

If you are bringing cash make sure you have a lot of US $1 and US $5 for tips and miscellaneous expenses. It also wouldn’t hurt to let your credit card company know you are traveling to Jamaica.

Entertainment devices and Chargers

When you are traveling you always have a long wait so it’s great to bring entertainment devices. It is also a great way to keep the children occupied.

If you are from the US you don’t need a plug adapter. If you are not from the US you will need a plug adapter.

Other Supplies

Here are a few other things you might need on your next vacation to Jamaica:

  • If you are staying at a non-all inclusive hotel consider bringing your own Snorkel and Mask. If you are staying at a villa ask the managers if they supply them.
  • First-aid-kit
  • Luggage locks
  • Camera Supplies (battery and memory cards)
  • Digital Luggage Scale (make sure you never go over the weight limit again)
  • Waterproof bag to carry wet clothing

If you forget something don’t stress. If you forgot to bring something more than likely you can buy it in Jamaica.

However, try and avoid the tourist stores and shop where the locals shop.

Most importantly don’t forget to bring a relaxed attitude. Remember you are on holiday! We know Jamaica is not perfect but seriously where is!

When you visit hopefully you will see it through our eyes and understand why we love this piece of rock called Jamaica.

Having   insurance while you are traveling outside your home country  is very important. Make sure that you have one too, to keep you safe in your trips around the world.

Weather in Jamaica and the Best Times to Visit

Jamaica like the rest of the Caribbean has a tropical climate, which is dominant throughout the year. Coastal breezes can be felt during evenings, and the mountains surrounding the island may contribute to some variation in temperatures, however these will be very minimal. Again, think of Jamaican as sunshines and rainbows whole year long.

Seasonal rains can occur in October and in May and their colder winds or winter (known as northers) can be felt from December to March, but nothing too extreme so dressing and packing for Jamaican can pretty much be the same whatever Month you decide to travel to the island.

Casual Clothing and Resort Wear

Yes, resort wear. When you’re packing for a Jamaican trip , you are expecting to spend a time in beautiful resorts, and beaches. You’ll need to prepare light clothing (cotton, linen, rayon), and best with light colors. Blouses for women, Cool and Simple Tshirts and Shirts for men will be the first choices. For pants, better go for light and cropped pants or linen pants if you’re planning to have more casual activities and coverups for times when you are not swimming, and a few pairs of shorts.

Swimming Wear

You’ll spend a lot of time swimming , or at least lounging when you’re in Jamaica so better look good, relaxed and fun with a few pairs of bikinis (choose some 2-pieces or one pieces), and swimming trunks and shorts for men, and you’ll be good to go. Try to have some variation in style or color, if you’re planning to get some of your Instagrammable shots in the island (we know you’re planning to!),

You will get the most out of the beautiful scenery and create the photos you want to have. Make sure to bring coverups for all the times you’re not in the water. Sun is definitely hot, so you’ll need to get protected from that.

A good pair of sandals or slippers will be enough for a travel packing for Jamaica, however, if you’re expecting a few sit down dinners, or maybe hitting a few clubs, or parties, you can pack extra shoes, but make sure they are comfortable enough and know whether you’ll be walking on the sand with them, or just walking in the resort or clubs. We have our favorite foot wear that can double up as underwater wear, so these might be good to have too!

What To Wear in Jamaica: Clothes for Activities

Now there are also other activities to do in the island, like golfing, hiking, walks and other sight seeing , so having extra pairs of going out clothes that are not exactly bikinis and coverups, but thin and comfortable enough for the hot sunny Jamaican weather will sure come in handy. Make sure not to overpack these, because Jamaican vibes will sure force you to stay lounging most of the time!

Skin Protection from Heat and the Sun

In addition to proper summer outfits and clothes, packing for protecting your skin will be imperative. A sunblock with protection for UVA and UVB (for the best brands, choose a sunblock with triple +++) is very important. You’ll have to re-apply your sunblock every 20-30 minutes, especially if you’ll be staying under the sun for a long time, so make sure you pack enough for your trip.

The sun will most likely affect your hair too, so best if you pack hair products and conditioners that will be good for protecting your hair.

For your makeup , make sure that you have the right sunscreen and foundation for your skin. Don’t forget your moisturizers and lotions, because skin can get dry pretty easy in this weather. If you choose to bring makeup in this trip, choose lip balms, lipsticks and chapsticks that are light colors or good for very sunny weather.

These will likely be lighter than darker. Just like your skin and body, your face will most likely need to stay hydrated, so mist sprays can be very helpful to keep your face refreshed all day long.

If you have hair dye or hair color , make sure you bring the appropriate products or consult your stylist on what products to bring to prepare your hair for the weather! Heat protectants will be very important especially if you will use a lot of blow dryers or iron in the trip, or even just for extra lounging time under the sun!

Water Bottles

Keep your body hydrated! Instead of expecting to buy multiple water bottles for the duration of your trip, try to have a water bottle handy with you at all times so you can keep yourself hydrated and also be mindful of waste!

Accessories

What to wear in Jamaica unless you’re looking to attend high end parties where it’s important to be bringing a lot of bling and jewelry, best to keep accessories at a minimum on your Jamaican holiday. Most of what you’ll need will be sunglasses, and hats and caps to protect your face and to add to your outfit during your stay.

A day bag will also be good to have, to bring with you on some activities on the island. In any trip, we suggest to keep your valuables – money, credit cards, passports, identification cards, and other valuables in secure containers to avoid any theft — a general rule for any travel.

Bags, Containers, Luggage

What to wear in Jamaica talking about bags and luggage , depending on how long you’re planning to stay in Jamaica, a small hand luggage or small suitcase should be enough. This, a day bag, packing cubes, and water proof protectors are all you’ll need.

What are packing cubes you say? One of the biggest packing hack that we swear by is dividing your luggage in packing cubes so you can go from packing to unpacking, to packing again in no time. Organization will be a breeze, and you will minimize stress when you’re trying to look for your things on a holiday.

Usually, what we do is have a bigger packing cube for clothes, and casual outer wear. A separate one for underwear and swimwear. A separate packing cube for gadgets and devices (make sure that these are actually in water proof containers), and a separate packing cube for toiletries and makeup.

Pre-travel preparation

Ahh, the struggles of being a woman ! Now, there are definitely a lot of ways for you to prepare, but since you can expect that you’ll spend a lot of time in bikinis and short wears, have your waxing appointments ready before your trip. If you shave yourself, or you have your own shaving kits, make sure you bring these, with your creams to not have the stress later on during your trip.

You want to be swim ready at any moment ! If you need some nail work done, brows, lashes, make sure you have these prepared too before your trip!

Medicine Kits and other Extras

In addition to sunblocks, lotions, moisturizers, heat protectants , and tanning products, emergency supplies will always come in handy. Have some mosquito repellent and bug spray ready, in case the places you’ll stay at have these in the cooler evenings and your clothes make you more exposed to them. Medicines, vitamins, and essentials are always good to have in any trips too.

If you’re a content creator..

Water proof bags are definitely a must. You may want to bring your phones and camera gear near the water, or even in the water during this trip, so bring the appropriate water proof day bags, and water proof cases for your gear. Even if you’re not a content creator, it is now very usual to bring your phones out with you in the water, so having protective cases and covers are a must!

Don’t forget your underwater or water proof cameras if you’re planning to do a lot of shooting in the water! A snorkeling mask is always a great idea to enjoy. Bring yours from home and you will have available all the time to see the underwater life in Jamaica.

You should know they use 110 V and frequency the American (United States and Canada) will fit. A few places make it possible to fit your European adapter in the plug because they provide adapters. If you are coming from European countries, we recommend you to  bring an adapter  to be able to charge everywhere.

I´m bringing my  camera  and  phone  with their respective  chargers  and  powerbank

I´m bringing my  laptop  and charger and a universal  adaptor

I´m bringing my  passport , and  Travel Insurance   with Safetywing

Protection for gadgets and for theft

Anti-theft bags, locks for luggages , keeping important numbers and identifications with you, and spare money are all necessities in any travel. It will always be in handy to have these ready with you when you travel, even in a holiday destination like Jamaica.

Insurance and general things to have when traveling

Insurance is very important to have when you travel. For us, if you’re traveling a lot in places that expose you to water, in a destination like Jamaica, having insurance for important gears is good too. Double check that you are protected the best way you can.

Basics and Toiletries

Finally, making sure you are covered with the basic needs like your personal toiletries are good to have when packing for a trip. When you are staying in high end resorts you will most likely have the best toiletries available, but just prepare any special products and knick knacks that you always want to have with you. Have your perfumes, deodorizers,

For the women , since a lot of the time will be spent in water, and lighter and thinner clothing, check if the trip will come during your time of the month. You don’t want to not be ready or to be stressed of having the special products you want to have during your special week, so have your feminine products with you.

If you haven’t tried menstrual cups, you might want to try or have these with you, if you are expecting to have your period and will still want to be in your cute, scrimpy bikinis all day long!

According to Tumi creative director Victor Sanz, “Your garment bag should be sturdy, functional, and sleek. If you’re frequently traveling by plane, a garment bag that folds to fit carry-on requirements is essential.” He adds, “You want to find the size that will fit all your clothes without having to overfold them and will allow you to reach your destination in style.”

It’s also important to consider bonus features, like pockets and organizational compartments, and, as Sanz notes, “A crucial function is to ensure that you’re able to hang your garment bag when you arrive at your destination, so that you can prepare your outfits as easily as possible and to ensure that all your clothes are crisp.” Keeping all this in mind, we found the 12 best travel garment bags out there today. Once you start using one of these, you’re never going to go back.

MZ Wallace’s signature quilting isn’t limited to the brand’s totes, appearing here in garment bag form. The thin design is extremely lightweight, ideal for quick trips when you need to bring one to three outfits. There is even an exterior pocket for bonus storage.

Dimensions: 22" × 3" × 39"

Materials: Oxford, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I have been interested in a MZ Wallace garment bag for a while. It is perfect! Just right proportions and size. Thoughtful design and construction details.”

Tumi always delivers premium luggage that will last you over a decade, and this garment bag is no exception. Sanz says: “It’s foldable, with a sturdy handle for easy carrying, making it convenient and compact for every type of travel. I also love that it has several zipper pockets, so I can pack my toiletries and other travel essentials all in one bag. When I arrive at my destination, I hang it in the closet and I know that I will be ready to go.”

Dimensions: 15" x 22" x 6"

Materials: Ballistic nylon

What reviewers are saying: “This bag stores so much for a carry on. I was able to comfortably fit 2 suits and more for a destination wedding!”

This duffel has been receiving high praise ever since its release. A few of the reasons it’s so popular: The duffel is carry-on friendly, water-resistant, and has interior and exterior pockets. And those are only a few of its distinguishing features. Choose an original or compact size for the style that suits your needs.

Dimensions: 22" x 12" x 12"

Materials: Polyester

What reviewers are saying: “The Garment Duffel is a great purchase, especially for anyone in an industry that takes short frequent trips. I was actually able fit quite a bit more clothes than I had anticipated. Took the bag to work and my company bought 20 of them to give to customers. Great purchase.”

Longchamp’s iconic nylon and leather trim takes on a garment bag silhouette. The two-tone design exudes sophistication, with practical touches like a top carry handle, built-in hanger, and front zip pocket.

Dimensions: 23.25" x 41.25"

Materials: Nylon, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who travels a lot and needed a nice garment bag particularly for his suits. This bag is perfect! It fits his suit as well as a few extra shirts. The fabric is an amazing, durable quality, and the leather details make this product look incredible.”

This garment bag is actually designed to fit inside of your carry-on, rather than serving as a stand-alone piece. The water-resistant exterior protects against spills, and exterior zip pockets hold small accessories. It gets the job done, while taking up the least possible amount of space.

Dimensions: 40" x 19"

What reviewers are saying: “I use this bag when I need to workout at work. I go from a suit to athleticwear in minutes.”

Looking for an affordable option that is available ASAP? Amazon’s garment bag holds up to three suits or dresses and boasts multiple zipper compartments.

Dimensions: 40" x 4" x 20.5"

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this bag in 2019 and it has held up incredibly well since then, performs all functions advertised at a great price value. I have taken it on many flights, buses and train rides and have never had an issue with fitting it in the overhead bin on both longer-haul flights and short budget-airline carriers.”

Hartmann’s garment bag adds contemporary touches to an otherwise traditional design. The result? A chic, useful travel accessory that will stand the test of time. The padded shoulder strap and multiple interior pockets enhance the convenience of this style.

Materials: Nylon

What reviewers are saying: “Hartmann was an anniversary gift from my work place, and I am still proud to own it 35 years later.”

Mark & Graham Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag

Another convertible duffel, but this time with a personalized touch. That’s right—Mark & Graham lets you monogram your duffel. With a plethora of zippered and snap interior and exterior pockets, this bag gets creative with its storage solutions.

Dimensions: 22" x 10" x 10"

This spinner-style garment bag makes navigating a chaotic airport easy. The ergonomic design has expandable capabilities, as well as various compartments, a hanger bracket, and a pocket for liquids.

Dimensions: 20.5" x 24" x 9.5"

What reviewers are saying: “It’s easy to maneuver and overall great quality and very neat design (many compartments and zippered areas).”

For golfers and non-golfers alike, Stitch makes a duffel that is water- and stain-resistant, and includes a hanger hook, shoulder strap, elastic shoe pockets, and webbed handles. You can even get it customized with your initials.

Dimensions: 22.5" x 11.5" x 12"

What reviewers are saying: “Love it! Fits into the airplane overhead bin, no trouble bringing it along as a carry-on bag. Very sturdy, zippers are tough enough. Shoulder strap is removable. My suit arrived in top shape using this garment bag. Highly recommended.”

Ralph Lauren Leather-Trim Hybrid Garment Duffel

What the Hack: The Best Travel Hacks From the Pros

Flight attendant Florian Schwebel is always prepared for anything on his travels. He shares his best travel hacks with us

In my job, I quickly learned one thing: most of the time, you never need all the clothes you've packed in your suitcase. That's why I choose what I take with me very carefully. Especially when I'm only in one place for 24 hours, as is often the case.

Portrait of Florian Schwebel

Travel Hack #1: Jogsuit

I always have a "jogsuit" with me in a basic color like grey or blue. These are suits made from jogging trouser fabric, which are available from various brands. They don't have a pleat, don't crease and look very casual in combination with sneakers. You can put them in the washing machine when you get there and you're instantly styled if you want to go out in the evening shortly after your arrival.

Travel Hack #2: Longsleeve made from merino wool

A merino wool longsleeve is also always on my packing list. The material has the advantage that it is sweat-resistant and regulates the temperature well. This is very practical if you don't know what weather to expect when you get there. Just like a super-light, compressible and waterproof jacket that can be folded up into a small package.

Travel Hack #3: Moisturizing spray

To make sure I look fresh and awake after a long flight from Germany to the USA, I like to spray moisturizing spray on my face. It works wonders.

Travel Hack #4: Duffel bag

On short trips, I usually only have a small duffel bag with me instead of a hard-shell suitcase. It's easier to squeeze into the overhead compartment on the plane. And in case I have time to go shopping on the road, I always have a foldable mini travel bag with me. You never know what you might discover.

Florian Schwebel is a flight attendant at Lufthansa. He travels both intercontinental on long-haul routes and within Europe.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Earth Day has arrived, and with it comes an opportunity to reflect on your buying habits so that you can begin to consume more consciously. If you have any trips on the horizon, you may still have some shopping to do in preparation, so we decided to make it a little bit easier to build out your dream travel wardrobe while being kinder to the planet.

In honor of the annual event, keep reading to find the 10 eco-friendly brands we love to shop at for comfy travel clothing and gear — as well as our top pick from each. From the perfect flowy pants to wear during a long-haul flight (which you can find at Everlane ), to the most supportive walking shoes made with recycled materials at Cariuma , these products prove that you can invest in your closet while minimizing your footprint on Mother Earth.

Our Pick: The Easy Pant

Everlane has long prioritized using recycled and organic materials to create their high-quality, made-to-last clothing, securing them as a go-to source for sustainably made apparel that’s also travel-friendly. These lightweight and breathable pants are made from a cotton and elastane blend and feature a stretchy elastic waistband that ensures they’ll remain comfortable during even the longest flights. And while you can never go wrong with a good pair of black pants, they’re also available in six other neutral shades that you won’t want to miss out on for spring.

Our Pick: Oca Low Black Canvas

One of the primary pillars of the Cariuma brand is sustainability , and in fact, with every purchase of a pair of sneakers, the brand has vowed to plant two trees in Brazil as part of their reforestation initiative — so far, they’ve already planted more than 2 billion trees. It’s this attention and care for the planet that should convince you to pick up a pair of the organic cotton Oca Low canvas sneakers that thousands of shoppers ( and celebs ) swear by. They’re effortlessly comfortable, easy to style, and even come in 24 bold colors and patterns.

Our Pick: Rib-Knit Hoodie

This Oprah-loved brand creates all of its products — from sheets to lounge sets — with responsibly sourced material that’s ethically made, all while designing pieces that are built to last. So, if you’re looking to add a cozy layer to your travel wardrobe that’s sustainably made and unbelievably soft, their Rib-Knit Hoodie is our top choice, and it’s even on sale for $117 right now thanks to the brand’s annual Mother’s Day Sale . The material on this cooling sweatshirt is viscose made from bamboo which provides an effortless drapey fit, and it’s available in four sleek shades, with sizes ranging from XS to 3XL.

Our Pick: Woven Twill Utility Joggers

Pact prioritizes using eco-friendly textiles in their comfy pieces that are practically designed for long travel days, and they’re even Fair Trade Certified, meaning that their factories are guaranteed to offer safe working conditions for those making your clothing. If you’ve been on the hunt for pants that you can wear from sightseeing excursions to running errands (and everything in between), these utility joggers are the perfect choice, and right now they’re on major sale, bringing the price down to just $54. Plus, if you want a closer look at the sustainability stats, the site even outlines that the organic cotton these pants are made of saves 62 gallons of water, and boasts nearly 20 pounds of carbon emission offset.

Our Pick: Horizontal Duck Bag

Sustainability is at the forefront of Baggu’s brand ethos , as they strive to reduce fabric waste while utilizing recycled materials to create the everyday bags that we know and love. The brand’s Horizontal Duck Bag is one of our top picks as it’s made from recycled cotton canvas that creates a durable feel, while the spacious yet foldable design is easy to pack into your carry-on for an extra bag to use during your travels. Adjustable straps mean it can be worn as a crossbody or a shoulder bag, while a zipper secures your belongings within to ward off potential theft.

Our Pick: Volley Canvas White Black

Clothing and other textile waste is a major issue in the age of overconsumption, and Veja proposes one solution to this concern by making their comfy and supportive sneakers out of recycled plastic bottles and other materials, resulting in a sustainable and reliable product. The brand’s Volley Canvas sneaker is a top choice to shop this spring as the upper is made from 100 percent organic cotton, while supportive (and sustainably made) insoles provide comfort for all-day wear. Plus, they’re a nice twist on the classic white sneaker that will still match nearly everything you have in your suitcase.

Our Pick: Moda 20L Backpack

From partnering with reliable and ethical factories to working with sustainable, recycled fabrics, Cotopaxi is a leader in environmentally friendly outdoor gear , so you can snag a backpack, duffel, or even apparel that works for you and the earth. The 20L Moda Backpack is currently on sale for just $69 and is made from a mix of recycled nylon and polyester to secure its title as eco-conscious. Plus, a large primary compartment, breathable mesh back paneling, and a variety of other easy-access pockets all make packing for your travels a breeze.

Our Pick: Mongolian Cashmere Batwing Sweater

Quince aims to reduce the use of unnecessary plastic in their shipping methods while also creating long-lasting pieces made from environmentally friendly materials such as organic cotton in order to lessen their carbon footprint . Those factors in combination with competitive prices that are a fraction of traditional retailers mean you can’t go wrong with anything you choose from the site. The brand’s Mongolian Cashmere Batwing Sweater is at the top of our shopping list for spring as the flowy design will make for the most gorgeous layering piece to tuck into your carry-on during a long-haul flight, and with seven jewel-toned and neutral shades to choose from, we can’t blame you if you pick up more than one. Best of all, it’s lightweight, breathable, and ethically produced.

Girlfriend Collective

Our Pick: Monaco Float Ultralight Leggings

Girlfriend Collective strives to do everything it can to build a sustainable and eco-friendly business , starting with 100 percent recycled and recyclable packaging and extending to the recycled materials from which they make their clothing. In fact, in an effort to reuse plastics, the brand even makes a large portion of its apparel from old water bottles to keep that material out of landfills. If you’re making your first purchase from Girlfriend Collective, you can’t go wrong with these lightweight leggings that boast sizes ranging from 2XS to 6XL in four gorgeous colors. They’re sweat-wicking and quick-drying, making them ideal for tough workout days and walking tours alike.

Our Pick: Women’s R1 CrossStrata Jacket

It’s no secret that Patagonia is one of the most beloved (and sustainable) outdoor gear brands, from its use of recycled materials to its animal welfare policies , and the creation of high-quality products that won’t soon need to be replaced or otherwise end up in a landfill. In fact, the brand is even focusing on utilizing regenerative practices starting with soil in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while formulating top-notch gear. Right now, the Women’s R1 CrossStrata Jacket has caught our eye while it’s on sale for an impressive 50 percent off, as it’s made with a breathable yet cozy fleece to provide insulation during your spring hiking and camping endeavors. Not to mention that it’s even made in a Fair Trade Certified factory, so you don’t have to worry about contributing to inhumane working conditions with your shopping habits.
