Date idea: An early-evening picnic in a stately square

Place des Vosges is pure eye-candy – a 17th-century peach stone beauty that was built for Henri IV, with shop-filled arcades and a stately park that lets you lounge on the grass (a rarity in Paris). It’s the ideal spot for a picnic on a warm summer evening, and there’s plenty more to get up to afterwards in the vicinity, including the Maison de Victor Hugo and countless charming cafés, restaurants and bars.

Date idea: Rent a rowing boat on the Grand Canal

It goes without saying that the flamboyant gardens at Versailles are a decent place to take a date. On this spot there used to be a trainline between Bastille and Vincennes. While the Bastille station was eventually replaced by today’s Opera house, the viaduct was converted into glass-fronted workshops and boutiques for local artisans and the old lines became La Coulée Verte – a 5km long trail (also known as the Promenade Plantée) made up of elevated gardens, the Jardin de Reuilly and tree-lined cycling paths.

Let’s be honest, taking a date to the movies is a pretty safe option. But in Paris, even this becomes a whole load more romantic. We say try the Grand Action, in the historic area around the Sorbonne on the Left Bank. One of our favourite independent cinemas in Paris, it’s renowned for screening new prints of old movies. Heaven for anyone who’s nostalgic for Tinseltown classics and quality US independents.

5.  Musée de Montmartre

Date idea:  Explore one of Montmartre’s most charming buildings

Hidden down a cobbled street around the back of the Sacré Cœur , this museum must be one of Montmartre’s most charming buildings (and there’s plenty of competition). Formerly a home and meeting place for artists, number 12 Rue Cortot overflows with recognisable works by Auguste Renoir, Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo.

Date idea: Admire kaleidoscopic stained glass on the Île de la Cité 

Devout King Louis IX had a hobby of accumulating holy relics. In the 1240s, he bought what was advertised as the Crown of Thorns, and ordered Pierre de Montreuil to design a shrine. The result was Sainte-Chapelle. With 15m (49ft) windows, the upper level appears to consist almost entirely of stained glass. The windows depict hundreds of scenes from the Old and New Testaments, culminating with the Apocalypse in the rose window.

A massage may not be the most obvious date suggestion, but we think Yuzuka in the 7th arrondissement is pretty special – and definitely worth taking someone special to. The décor of this Japanese salon is calmly minimalist, with soothing neutral tones bathing the walls. If you’re after a first-rate  massage à deux, Yuzuka  is a great way to let off steam together.

8.  Septime La Cave

Date idea:  Five-star bottles and delectable small plates 

A superb selection of wines, delectable smoked meats on toast, and a cosy environment to enjoy it all in. Sounds a bit like heaven, or maybe just the annex of Septime, Bertrand Grébaut’s buzzing Michelin-starred restaurant, which has become particularly popular since Beyoncé’s much publicised visit in 2013. A rotating selection of five whites and five reds are sold by the glass (between €4.50 and €8), including an exquisitely fruity Fleur Sauvage Jouret.

Cosy up at this venerable jazz spot that goes from strength to strength, attracting a high calibre of performer and a savvy crowd. Claim a pew, order a glass of wine, and enjoy a foot-tapping evening ensemble . 

10.  Musée de la Vie Romantique

Date idea:  Tea and cake in a quaint, tucked-away museum

Sure, it’s the wrong kind of Romantic, but this place is romantic with a lower-case ‘r’ all the same. When Dutch artist Ary Scheffer built this small villa in 1830, the area teemed with composers, writers and artists. Novelist George Sand was a guest at Scheffer’s soirées, along with great names such as Chopin and Liszt. The museum is devoted to Sand, plus Scheffer’s paintings and other mementoes of the Romantic era. The museum’s tree-lined courtyard café and greenhouse are the perfect secret summer retreat.

11.  La Belle Hortense

Date idea:  Share a carafe at a book reading

A tranquil boozy and literary escape from the frenetically trendy streets of the Marais, La Belle Hortense with its pretty blue frontage is all about settling down with a good book and a nice wine. Hosting readings and literary events, the bar-boutique’s walls are lined with bottles and books, including new releases, rare volumes, independent poetry and classic collections. The wine list is enormous – quite pricey by the glass but much better value by the bottle or carafe.

12.  La Vache dans les Vignes

Date idea:  A luxury cheese tasting in a dinky setting

This tiny cheesemonger by the Canal Saint-Martin brims with dairy delights. Selling a wide range of cheeses, wines and cured meats to take home, La Vache dans les Vignes also serves its produce on the spot for just a few extra euros. With seating for just 14, the owners have created a warm atmosphere with bottles of wine stacked to the ceiling on wooden shelves, and a glass shop front looking out onto the canal.

13.  Galerie Vivienne

Date idea:  Browse upscale boutiques at an atmospheric passage couvert

An elegant arcade dating back to 1873, the Galerie Vivienne is in perfect condition, all polished wood, glass and wrought iron, its mosaic-inlaid corridors lined with plants. Even during busy times it feels relatively tranquil, making it a pure pleasure to browse the chic boutiques – look out for Jean-Paul Gaulthier, Nathalie Garçon, bijou toystore Si Tu Veux and venerable wine cellar and deli Legrand Filles et Fils. At the entrance on the Rue des Petits-Champs, Bistrot Vivienne is a charming and reliable pitstop, with a romantic private dining room upstairs.

For a night at the top, the bar of Montmartre’s Terrass hotel is exceptional even by Paris’s standards. Yes, it’s had a swanky, contemporary makeover, mixes expensive cocktails, and serves an above-average menu to its extremely well-heeled clientele in an atmosphere of velvet-lined chic. That’s all very nice, but can be found in endless permutations across the city. But nowhere else has this view.

If you’re looking for something a little less formal than the Tuileries, one patch of greenery definitely worth a stroll is the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. Set high up in Belleville and often missed by weekenders keen not to stray too far from the tourist loop, this 19th arrondissement paradise is one of the city’s most magical green spaces. If you can’t stay in this stunning 19th-century manor home, you’ll certainly want to make a reservation for the supremely talented Thibaut Spiwack’s (formerly of Georges V and Jules Verne) weekend brunch. Comprising two starters, a choice of main course and two desserts, accompanied by a hot beverage, a fresh juice, French pastries and fresh bread, it’s a worthwhile treat at €38.

If your date has a sweet tooth then there’s one address that you absolutely have to go to: Angelina at 226 Rue de Rivoli. Founded in 1903 by Austrian confectioner, Antoine Rumpelmayer, and named after his stepdaughter, this legendary tea house, once frequented by Marcel Proust and Coco Chanel , is famous for its Belle Époque style and, above all, its hot chocolate. On the dessert front, the house specialty is the Mont Blanc – puréed, sweetened chestnuts topped with whipped cream – and their macarons are also worth a try. Why not order both and share?

Cruise the Seine on a Venetian taxi boat

It doesn’t get much more glamorous than cruising along the Seine on your own antique boat, sipping champagne and taking in the sights, and this Bond-like vision can easily be achieved with the 30′ Cuddy Cabin . An hour-and-a-half ride on this beauty costs an admittedly eye-watering €690, but there are plenty of other options available for a river or canal cruise in Paris that don’t involve hanging out on a barge with 350 waving tourists.

Admire the sculptures at the Musée Rodin

There aren’t many Parisian museums that couldn’t be described as romantic, but in a field of beauties the Musée Rodin blooms the brightest. The great sculptor’s works, including The Kiss and The Thinker , are spread across the Hôtel Biron, a spectacular mansion in the exclusive Faubourg Saint-Germain where he lived and worked from 1908 until his death in 1917, and its expansive grounds. Standard entry costs €11.30 and the museum closes at 5.45PM (the Wednesday late-night openings have, unfortunately, been temporarily suspended).

Enjoy a private wine tasting at Ô Chateau

Ô Chateau is a perfectly lovely wine bar, located just a five-minute saunter from the Louvre , and heading there for a casual glass or two would be a fantastic date night in itself. However, if you want to get the most out of the place, and your evening, sign up for a group or, better yet, private wine tasting session. The specifics of these can easily be organized on request with Ô Chateau , though the typical format would be a two-hour guided experience, either at the bar or in a private room.

Have dinner halfway up the Eiffel Tower

Paris’, and perhaps even the world’s, most famous tourist attraction might not seem like the kind of place for an intimate meal for two, but the Eiffel Tower ’s second-floor restaurant is actually one of the city’s most highly recommended. It is run by French master chef Alain Ducasse, whose establishments have acquired a dazzling 21 Michelin stars, and his goal is ‘to ensure that a moment spent at Le Jules Verne is forever etched into the memory of those who have lived it.’ The three-course lunch and five- or six-course dinner cost €105, and €190 or €230, respectively.

See a film at the plush Grand Rex

Sometimes you just can’t beat the classics, and there’s nothing more classic than dinner and a movie. Plus, seeing as Paris is the home of cinema, there’s really no need to mess with a winning formula. You have your pick of arthouse theaters in the capital but the Grand Rex in Grands Boulevards is the most extravagant. Admittedly, the films it shows are more mainstream than most but none can compete with its Art Deco design and vast auditorium – the biggest in Europe with a capacity of 2800. If you want to end your evening with some dancing, head downstairs to its basement nightclub.

Treat yourself to a night at the opera at the Palais Garnier

The Palais Garnier represents the pinnacle of decadent 19th-century Parisian architecture and, indeed, of a classy night out for two in Paris. Each season offers new delights from the world of ballet and opera and, if you act fast, you can snag tickets to an unforgettable performance for as little as €10. Those buying closer to the curtains going up will likely be left with the expensive seats, which are capped at €170. As if the extraordinary music and dance weren’t enough, those with a ticket can also gaze up and enjoy Marc Chagall ’s spectacular ceiling.

Though Paris is infamously quiet—and devoid of actual French people—during the month of August, there is truly no better time of year to visit the city than during the summer. And with the sun setting well past 9 p.m., the day is stretched to maximize darting around town, tasting all the most delectable food the city has to offer, seeing the finest of the arts and culture offerings, and of course, taking in the sights as only a flâneur could. With so much to do, it's a wonder anyone ever sleeps at all on a trip to Paris—though, when the time calls for it, we have a list of fabulous places for you to stay too. The spiral of arrondissements offers something for everyone—you just need to know where to go. Where to Stay

Tucked away on the Rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré is the elegant and storied Le Bristol, with its 190 renovated rooms and suites. It's been a favorite of the fashion set for many decades—and for good reason. Not only does the hotel have a spectacularly manicured interior garden, a spa, and three restaurants (Epicure, 114 Faubourg, and Cafe Antonia), but it is also home to Le Bar Bristol—the perfect cozy-yet-glamorous venue to start, or end, a night out in Paris. And the indoor pool modeled after a sail boat on the Riviera? It's a sight to behold. But the most beyond touch: Le Bristol has its own épicerie, and its own flour mill and chocolaterie for the ingredients they use to create their own pastries and delectable chocolate treats in house. It's luxury from top to bottom.

Hotel Madame Reve

Located in the Louvre Post Office nestled in the bustling and oh-so historic first arrondissement, the Hotel Madame Reve offers an escape from the quotidian. Not only do the hotel suites and rooms boast modern finishings and excellent views to match (with mail and postage references) —it's quite literally a hotel in a post office, but the moment you step into the hotel, you really feel as though you're passing through the eras. On the first floor, classic French savoir-faire, but by the time you reach the third floor, where the restaurant La Plume is situated, or head up to Roof (the outdoor lounge at the top floor), you're in a sleek and shi-shi hotspot meant to spend the evening in only a way a bon vivant can.

The Ritz Paris

The Ritz Paris's reputation precedes itself. After-all, everyone from kings and queens to cultural figures such as Ernest Hemingway and Coco Chanel have stayed here . The scene can only described as lavish with an elegant decor of rich brocades and pastel hues. This is a must-visit for a hotel lover, and at risk of stating the obvious, even with many restaurants to choose from on site (some with Michelin stars), one should always make time to visit the perennially packed Bar Hemingway, as well. It would be wrong not to.

Hotel Brach

The sixteenth can carry a reputation for an atmosphere that is staid and stuffy—to which we say, to each their own. However, if in search of something a little more off-the-beaten path, you stumble upon the Hotel Brach, it is the warm and eclectic answer to the aforementioned reputation of the neighborhood it is situated. Think: a meeting of 1930s architecture, modernism, Bauhaus, Dada, and a touch of Surrealism. The effect: warm and eclectic accommodations that have made this hotel a go-to recommendation from local Parisians. Need we say more? If we must, we would be remiss to skip mentioning the rooftop garden which not only supplies berries, vegetables, and herbs to the hotel's restaurants, but also houses the chicken coop, with three hens to supply the hotel with eggs. Also on site, a Norwegian bath available to guests, and a rave-worthy sports club (which channels a 1930s boxing club) that offers memberships.

Chateau Voltaire

The Chateau Voltaire is a bit of a best kept secret—the kind backed up by unpretentious hospitality that truly earns its reputation as a stealth luxury stay. Guests continually remark that in spite of the fact that the hotel is located in the very busy second arrondissement, they find their stays to be remarkably quiet. Rooms are spacious and sleek with refined finishings, and replete with sumptuous details that only serve to underscore that the Chateau Voltaire (with its three buildings and 32 rooms) is a sultry sanctuary that deserves its reputation as a hidden gem.

What to Eat

If you can get a reservation at Septime—emphasis on the 'if'— by all means move mountains to make it work for your itinerary. Coveted reservations open up three weeks to the day in advance, and if dinner isn't possible, making a trip for lunch is highly suggested. And yes, lunch should come with the wine pairing. You are in France! The farm-fresh and local food is innovative and splashy, but the vibe is unpretentious. It's a meal to write home about.

L'Ami Jean is an institution among food-loving travelers and locals who know what they're talking about. The bistro first opened almost 100 years ago as a Basque pub and has evolved into a mainstay of classic French dining. It's not gimmicky, and absolutely one of those joints that you always make a point to stop by when you're in town.

In old French 'vantre' referred to the belly, all of which to say... come to Vantre hungry. With creative pairings of wine and inventive renditions of French classics that will leave you wanting to lick your plate, you'll inevitably become a return customer.

114 Faubourg

There's only one word to describe 114 Faubourg: chic. Well, actually two, the other word is delicious. The setting is glittering and modern, with floral prints on the walls and bright gold columns—and the food? It's decadent and savory and the service is in a class of its own. It will be one of the best meals of your trip, if not the best. And, yes, even if you are going for lunch, the wine pairing is highly suggested.

Chez Denise

An old school French brasserie in the best sense of the expression. Chez Denise is in the middle of the bustling Les Halles neighborhood—but rest assured it is just as buzzing once you walk into the premises. Wine flows by the carafe, and truthfully, if you're not getting a steak, then you are missing out. This is not one of those places where you have a light meal, which is intended entirely as a compliment.

The panoramic views are spectacular, but the Japanese-stroke-French-fare at the oh-so-sexy Plume makes for a great complement. Dress to impress, as you'll notice everyone there is too. It's not typically Parisian, but it's great for a romantic night out.

There are rooftop lounges and then there is ROOF at Hotel Madame Reve. Located on... you guessed it, the roof, the new outdoor space is the perfect place to grab an aperitif (or a few) and nosh on appetizers while you watch the sunset. It has a gorgeous suspended garden and the crowd is young and fashionable. And the view? It's so good you just won't want to leave.

La Grand Epicerie

If you're not going to take my word for it... at least then heed the advice of Ina Garten, who also suggests travelers pop in to the breathtaking Grand Epicerie. It is, without an ounce of hyperbole, the best specialty food store in the world.

30 Avenue Montaigne

Earlier this year, Dior re-opened its breathtaking flagship in Paris complete with an archival gallery, cafe, haute couture and jewelry atelier, as well as a restaurant, a patisserie, three gardens, and a boutique. It is well worth a visit if you love fashion, but even if you don't, it's a great experience from top to bottom.

Huitrerie Regis

Yes, Huitrerie Regis is listed here as a thing to do. Because it is an experience. Grab your travel buddy—and some friends, even if you have to make them—and order muscadet with your oysters. It's a grand old time.

La Samaritane

The historic French Department store in the first arrondissement reopened last year, and even if you aren't going to shop, it's worth a visit because of the breathtaking renovation. Also , Le Cheval Blanc is a hop, skip, and a jump away.

Designed and constructed for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (the World's Fair), the Eiffel Tower was always meant to be a temporary structure, but it has skirted demolition twice. The first time, in 1909, the tower was kept around because of its potential as a transmission tower (an antenna was installed atop the tower). Gustav Eiffel, chief architect of the Eiffel Tower, had a variety of scientific experiments tested on the tower with the hope that any discoveries would help prolong its lifespan. One of these included a wireless transmissions test, which the tower passed with flying colors. During World War I, the Eiffel Tower's transmission capabilities enabled it to intercept communications from enemies as well as relay intel to troops on the ground. The second time the Eiffel Tower was almost destroyed was during the German occupation of France during World War II. Hitler planned to get rid of the tower, but never ended up going through with his plan.

Musée du Louvre Musée du Louvre

If you only had time to visit one museum in Paris, it should undoubtedly be the Musée du Louvre. That's because the Louvre is not only widely considered to be one of the best art museums in Europe, but one of the best in the world. The museum first opened its doors in 1793 and features more than 35,000 works of art on display. Here, you can get up close to a variety of art from different time periods and cultures. The Louvre features everything from Egyptian mummy tombs to ancient Grecian sculptures (including the renowned Winged Victory of Samothrace and curvaceous Venus de Milo). There are also thousands of paintings to peruse as well. Masterpieces such as "Liberty Leading the People" by Eugene Delacroix, "The Raft of the Medusa" by Théodore Géricault and Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," the museum's biggest star, can be found here.

Notre-Dame Cathedral (Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Paris) Notre-Dame Cathedral (Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Paris) free

Note that the cathedral sustained significant damage as a result of a fire on April 15, 2019. Its wooden roof and spire collapsed during the fire. The interior of the cathedral remains closed to the public until further notice. It is set to reopen in December 2024. In the meantime, visitors can peruse a new exhibit that debuted in March 2023. It's located in an underground facility in front of the cathedral, the free exhibit highlights the ongoing construction work at the site, including the expertise of the workers, as well as some remains from the fire and works of art from the cathedral. There are also free, volunteer-led informational tours around the outside of the cathedral select days of the week. Consult this online calendar to see when English tours are offered.

Like the Eiffel Tower , the Notre-Dame Cathedral is seen as a Parisian icon. Located along the picturesque River Seine , the Notre-Dame Cathedral is considered a Gothic masterpiece and is often regarded as one of the best Gothic cathedrals of its kind in the world. Construction of the famous cathedral started in the late 12th century and final touches weren't made until nearly 200 years later. Once you get an eyeful of the cathedral yourself, you'll start to understand why it took so long.

Musician Joe Dassin once sang "Il y a tout ce que vous voulez aux Champs-Élysées," which translates to "There's everything you could want along the Champs-Élysées." And he's right. Paris' most famous boulevard – stretching more than a mile from the glittering obelisk at Place de la Concorde to the foot of the Arc de Triomphe – is a shopper's mecca. Along its wide, tree-lined sidewalks, you'll find such luxury stores as Louis Vuitton and Chanel rubbing elbows with less-pricey establishments like Adidas and Zara.

While the Champs-Élysées is no doubt a shopping paradise, recent travelers noticed the price tags at most stores can be pretty high. And the more affordable options are constantly swamped with people. The Champs-Élysées itself is no different. Because this is such a famous street in Paris, expect there to be crowds galore, both during the day and the nighttime. Still, many travelers enjoyed taking in the Champs-Élysées' bustling atmosphere and observing both locals and tourists come and go. Some recent visitors said a trip to the Champs-Élysées is not complete without a stop at Ladurée, the city's famous macaron shop.

Arc de Triomphe Arc de Triomphe

Situated at the western end of the Champs-Élysées , the towering Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoléon to honor the Grande Armee during the Napoleonic Wars. The arch, which is the largest of its kind in the world, is adorned with several impressive, intricately carved sculptures. Underneath the arch, travelers will find the names of the battles fought during the first French Republic and Napolean's Empire, as well as generals who fought in them. Travelers will also find the famous tomb of The Unknown Soldier. The unknown soldier currently buried there is meant to represent all the unidentified or unaccounted for soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. The flame that was lit when the soldier was laid to rest has not extinguished since it was initially lit in the 1920s, and is rekindled every night at 6:30 p.m. by a member of the armed services.

Aside from admiring the arch, visitors can climb to the top and take in the Parisian panorama. Most visitors are wowed by the immense size of the structure and recommend ascending to the top for the spectacular Paris views. Visitors caution that you'll have to wait in line to get to the top and the climb, which is made up of hundreds of stairs, can be a serious workout. Others strongly cautioned against trying to cross the roundabout to get to the Arc. Instead, take the underground tunnel near the metro that leads directly to the base of the structure.

A warm-weather oasis that offers the simplest of pleasures, the Luxembourg Gardens provide ample green space (60 acres) for sun-soaking and people-watching, plus there are plenty of activities to keep kids entertained. When the city bustle becomes too overwhelming, meander around the paths and formal gardens, or just relax with a picnic. Kids can float sailboats at the Grand Basin, ride ponies, take a spin on the merry-go-round, or catch a puppet show at the on-site Theatre des Marionnettes. Adults might delight in the on-site Musée du Luxembourg, the first French museum that was opened to the public. Though with 106 sculptures to its name, including a replica of the Statue of Liberty, the Luxembourg Gardens could easily be considered an open-air museum itself.

Rising high above Paris, the Sacré-Coeur (meaning "Sacred Heart") looks more like a white castle than a basilica. Towering over the eclectic neighborhood of Montmartre (once a hangout for Paris' bohemian crowd), this Roman-Byzantine, 19th-century masterpiece is easily recognized by its ornate ivory domes. As blanched as it may appear on the outside, the basilica's interior is a sight worth beholding: The ceilings glitter with France's largest mosaic, which depicts Jesus rising alongside the Virgin Mary and Joan of Arc.

You'll also likely be left in awe with the panoramic views found from atop the Sacré-Coeur's outdoor staircase. But for an even better photo-op, climb all 300 steps to the top of the dome. The dome is accessible to visitors every day from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mass is held multiple times a day every day.

Centre Pompidou Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou is one of the most visited cultural sites in Paris. But keep this in mind – and recent travelers attest to this – if you're not a fan of modern art, you probably won't enjoy this museum. The Pompidou is all modern and contemporary art (think cubist, surrealist and pop art, among others). Even its exterior is a little "out there," with its insides (piping, plumbing, elevators, escalators, etc.) exposed on the outside.

Inside the inside-out museum, you'll find one of the largest collections of modern and contemporary art in the world (more than 120,000 pieces of art are in its complete collection). The most notable attraction within is France's National Museum of Modern Art, which features works from 20th and 21st-century artists. Here, you can find big names such as Matisse, Picasso and even Andy Warhol. Also within the Centre Pompidou is additional exhibition and entertainment spaces as well as a library, rooftop restaurant and cinemas.

U.S. News Insider Tip: While you’re here, don’t miss Angelina, just across the street on Rue de Rivoli. This historic, belle epoque-style salon de thé opened in 1903 and serves excellent French delicacies and pastries alongside its famous, indulgently rich hot chocolate. – Laura French

Centrally located between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde, the Jardin des Tuileries is a free public garden that spans approximately 55 acres. Though it was initially designed solely for the use of the royal family and court, the park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1991 (as part of the Banks of the Seine) and has been open to the public since the 17th century.

Sainte-Chapelle Sainte-Chapelle

Nowhere in Paris does stained-glass windows quite as well as Sainte-Chapelle. The panes – dating back to the chapel's construction in the 13th century – depict 1,113 scenes from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible in vivid color. Sainte-Chapelle, which took just seven years to build, is a treasured example of French Gothic architecture and originally held Christian artifacts acquired by Louis IX. The building underwent a rigorous restoration between 2008 and 2014 and now welcomes visitors every day of the year except Christmas Day, New Year's Day and May 1 (France's Labor Day). Admission costs 13 euros (about $14) per person ages 18 and older. Audio guides are available in English (among other languages) for an additional 3 euros (about $3.50). 

Recent travelers say the chapel is a true masterpiece and not to be missed, though some visitors did note it was smaller than they anticipated. Still, they say it's worth taking your time to have a closer look at each of the stained-glass windows, as they all tell a different story. Some travelers also recommended touring the Conciergerie next door, a palace turned prison that was erected in the 14th century. If you plan to tour both sites, consider purchasing a joint ticket for 20 euros (about $22).

Situated in the Latin Quarter – or the 5th arrondissement – of Paris, the Panthéon is a large church and burial ground with a storied history. The structure was completed in 1790 at the start of the French Revolution, and it served as a mausoleum, a church and an art gallery throughout its early years. In 1851, scientist Leon Foucault installed the Foucault pendulum within the building to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. The pendulum was removed and replaced a number of times, and a replica was installed in 1995 and is still in operation today. The Panthéon also contains a crypt where a number of important historians, philosophers, scientists and writers are buried, including Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Marie Curie.

Most recent travelers loved seeing the museum's noteworthy gravesites and Foucault's pendulum. They also recommended taking a dome tour for exceptional views of Paris; you’ll see the Eiffel Tower from the top, as well as many other well-known landmarks. Still, some visitors said the admission fee is too high.

A masterpiece of architectural opulence, the Opéra Garnier – also known as the Palais Garnier – still exudes the opulence it radiated in the late 1800s. This palpable sense of intrigue and mystery that permeates the opera is due in part to its awe-inspiring Old-World interiors as well as Gaston Leroux, the author of "Phantom of the Opera," for which the Garnier served as his inspiration. Leroux claimed the phantom was indeed real, successfully incorporating real life opera occurrences (such as the chandelier falling and killing a bystander) into his fiction. The Garnier's lack of a robust historical record, as well as Leroux's writing talents, have left many wondering if there really was a dweller that lurked beneath the opera. Staff have claimed otherwise, but say with the opera's very real underground "lake" (water tank), it's easy to see how the story could be so convincing. Without Napoleon III, who was responsible for commissioning the opera, Leroux's tale may never have never come to fruition.

The best way to fully experience the Palais Garnier is by purchasing a ballet or opera ticket. Remember to book your tickets several months in advance, as performances are highly coveted. If you won't be in town for a performance or aren't up for forking over the oftentimes high price of a performance, you can explore the building's magnificent interiors on your own.

Straddling the 3rd and 4th arrondissements (districts), Le Marais is one of Paris' oldest and coolest districts – so cool, in fact, that French writer Victor Hugo (author of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Les Misérables") called it home. With all of its cobblestone streets, stately stone architecture and tucked away courtyards, it's easy to feel as if you're strolling through medieval Paris. Back in the day, Le Marais housed some notable French royalty. King Henry IV was the one responsible for the construction of the Place des Vosges, Paris' oldest square. And Louis XIV called this neighborhood home for a while until he decided to move his family and court to Versailles . Much of Le Marais also survived the destruction of the French Revolution.

The Château de Versailles, the sprawling palace and former seat of power, is located 10 miles southwest of Paris in Versailles. Every year, nearly 10 million travelers make the trek from Paris to bear witness to the chateau's world-famous grandeur in person. But between all of the gold figurines, dramatic frescoes and cascading crystal chandeliers you'll no doubt find in bulk throughout the chateau, you might be surprised to learn that King Louis XIV's extravagant former residence had pretty humble-ish beginnings.

Musée Rodin Musée Rodin

A hidden jewel in the city, the Musée Rodin is actually the former residence of famed 19th-century sculptor Auguste Rodin. But in the place of furniture and kitschy lawn ornaments are Rodin's emotive sculptures, including The Walking Man, The Kiss and The Thinker, among many more. In addition to the sculptures, the museum houses 8,000 of the artist's drawings in its collection – a fraction of those are on display –  as well as an area dedicated to the work of his muse and mistress, artist Camille Claudel. Visitors will also get to view pieces from the Rodin's personal art collection, including paintings by Van Gogh.

Recent travelers found Rodin's sculptures to be nothing short of stunning, and highly recommend a visit even if you don't consider yourself an art buff. Another big favorite, and for some visitors as much of a highlight as the art, were the beautiful on-site gardens. To travelers, the gardens, in combination with the museum's manageable size, created a serene and peaceful atmosphere not easily found at other top Parisian museums.

The arts abound in Paris. Although visual art gets the most attention here, the city is also a historic literary center. Saint-Germain, in the 6th arrondissement, is known as a 19th- and 20th-century intellectual hub. Here, great writers, thinkers and artists mixed and mingled in their homes and nearby establishments. Anyone battling writer's block will want to spend an afternoon wandering its picturesque streets, stopping by famous literary cafes or enjoying one of the museums located in the neighborhood's borders.

After filling your mind at the Musée Delacroix, Musée du Luxembourg or Musée de Mineralogie, unwind at Les Deux Magots or Café de Flore. The former was visited by everyone from Ernest Hemingway, Simone de Beauvoir, James Joyce, Jean-Paul Sartre, and more recently, Julia Child. Nearby Café de Flore opened in the 1800s as well, and claims visitors from Leon Trotsky to Albert Camus to Picasso. Sartre worked from here – using the space as a historical Starbucks – while New Wave celebrities like Bridget Bardot or fashionista Karl Lagerfeld graced its seats later on, in the 1960s. There are plenty of mouthwatering pastry shops and bridge views, too. Recent visitors noted that this is a perfect neighborhood for strolling, shopping or staying – there are plenty of upscale hotels . Many of the best Paris tours also include guided walks through the neighborhood.

Whether or not you plan to shop, the Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann department store is a sight to be seen. What started as a small novelty shop in 1893 has since grown into an approximately 750,000-square-foot megastore containing hundreds of brands, from budget-friendly options like Levi's and Carhartt to high-end labels like Prada and Cartier. And while you might be dazzled by the unending collection of fashionable goods, don’t forget to look up. The pièce de résistance of the luxury bazaar is the stunning neo-Byzantine glass dome 141 feet above the ground. There's also a glass walkway on the top floor of the building that allows the bravest of visitors to stand above all the action below. 

Several recent visitors called Galeries Lafayette the most beautiful shopping center in the world, pointing out that even if you aren't there to buy luxury products, the stunning building is a destination in itself. They also recommend going up to the roof of the complex (accessible from the eighth floor), which is open to visitors free of charge, to take in breathtaking views of the city below. From the roof, you'll be able to spot the Eiffel Tower , Sacré Cœur and Notre Dame .

Not every inch of Paris is as romantic as you think – in fact, the Catacombs are downright chilling. Prior to the creation of the Catacombs in the late 18th century, Parisians buried their dead in cemeteries. But as the city continued to grow, burial grounds ran out of space, graves started to become exposed and stunk up surrounding neighborhoods. The limestone quarries located 65 feet beneath Paris eventually became the solution, providing ample and safe space for the city's deceased loved ones. It took years to move millions of bodies from all the Parisian graves.

Today, the solemn, skull-and-boned lined tunnels weave beneath the heart of the City of Love, beckoning to visitors with an interest in the departed. The catacombs stretch for miles all over the city, but visitors are only allowed to access about a mile's worth for 45 minutes at the Denfert-Rochereau (lines 4,6 and RER B) metro station. Trying to access the catacombs at any other entrance throughout the city is illegal. You'll want to wear sturdy footwear as the paths inside are full of gravel, uneven and even slippery in some sections. What's more, you'll have to descend 131 steps and climb 112 steps back up. As such, the catacombs are not wheelchair-accessible. And because of the attraction's unique nature and popularity, expect a queue.

A cemetery as a tourist attraction? If any city can pull it off, it's Paris. Covering nearly 110 acres of the 20th arrondissement (district), the Père-Lachaise Cemetery is considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. It's also Paris' largest green space. Père-Lachaise is a maze of cobblestone pathways lined with leafy, cascading trees which perfectly shade the striking 19th-century burial chambers that permeate the grounds. Aesthetics aside, Père-Lachaise is one of the world's most famous burial grounds: Everyone from Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison to Edith Piaf and Gertrude Stein can be found here. Make sure to pick up a map before you venture in, there are more than 100,000 burial plots here (exact estimates vary dramatically).

Travelers admitted the main reason they made the trek to Père-Lachaise was to visit the famous faces buried here, though after discovering the enchanting grounds, they were happy to stay and wander. Visitors found the architecture of the individual tombstones and burial chambers to be stunning, especially with the many dramatic statues included with the plots. Others particularly appreciate the overall peaceful atmosphere of Père-Lachaise. Because the cemetery is so big, visitors say it's unlikely you'll be sharing lots of space with fellow visitors or tourists at any given time.

For those who want to cruise down the Seine River , hopping on one of the six Bateaux-Mouches boats is a go-to option. Just about any meal you can think of is offered as you glide along the river – or as the company puts it, Paris's "most beautiful avenue." There are also hourlong cruise-only trips, for those who want to efficiently view some of the city's most iconic sights, including Notre Dame and the Musée d'Orsay . These cruises are among the best Paris tours . Combo tickets that include a bus tour or a cabaret show are also available.

Travelers who recently took a cruise loved the views from the boat and the informational nature of the tour. Many people took a night cruise, which was frequently lauded for its romantic atmosphere. However, a few visitors expressed disappointment with meal portions and the check-in process.

An extension of Musée d'Orsay , Musée de l'Orangerie features a wide selection of impressionist and post-impressionist art. It is best known for its enlarged "Water Lilies" paintings by Claude Monet. The eight massive paintings are divided across two oval rooms that are filled with natural light from a glass roof. Monet increased the size of these paintings with the intention of fully immersing viewers in their beauty, especially after the hardships of World War I. Beyond the "Water Lilies" series, Musée de l'Orangerie houses the Jean Walter-Paul Guillaume collection, which features works by artists like Renoir, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse and more.  

Museum visitors – especially Monet fans – said this gallery is a must-see. They were pleased to discover it was a relatively small building, meaning it can be seen fairly quickly if you short on time. The smaller space also translates to less crowds, which many museumgoers appreciated.

The Montparnasse Tower Observation Deck claims to have the best views in Paris – and once you reach the top, it's easy to see why. The lower deck stands more than 650 feet high and overlooks major attractions, like the Eiffel Tower , through floor-to-ceiling windows. Travel another 32 feet upward to the rooftop terrace, and you'll find panoramic vistas of the City of Lights 365 days a year. On a clear day, you can see as far as 25 miles in every direction.

Moulin Rouge Moulin Rouge

If you're looking for the famed Parisian nightlife experience, Moulin Rouge will likely fit the bill. The legendary cabaret club opened in 1889, wowing crowds with dazzling dancers, free-flowing Champagne and outrageous elements like a gigantic model elephant in the garden. With its rich history and extravagant performances, Moulin Rouge has become an important staple in the City of Lights.

On a night at the Moulin Rouge, visitors can be wined and dined while watching talented burlesque dancers adorned in feathers, rhinestones and sequins. (The costumes are known to be a bit risqué, so travelers should note that the venue may not be the most suitable for children.) While many recent travelers felt that the show was a spectacular must-see while vacationing in Paris, others felt it was overhyped and overcrowded. However, those who opted for the dinner show said the food was fantastic with top-notch service to match.

Paris is home to many beautiful public parks, where visitors and locals alike relax in grassy squares during periods of pleasant weather. Parc de Buttes-Chaumont's 61 acres boasts this – plus a lake, a suspension bridge and walking paths – and a dark history. Its name comes from the bare hill once occupying the site. Stone was mined here, sewage dumped and even horse carcasses discarded. When Napoleon III renovated Paris in the 19th century, it was selected as a large park site, and the artificial lake created. That transformation also washed away its medieval reputation as a gallows. Known as Gibbet of Montfaucon at that time, the bodies of people executed in the city were sometimes displayed here for months on end.

If you can put that history behind you, cross the Gustave Eiffel-designed suspension bridge, or ascend the hill with the Temple de la Sybille for beautiful views of Montmartre. Inside the hillside, quarrying created a cavern. Napoleon's park builders took the opportunity to add a human-made waterfall to the 65-foot-tall space. Summer visitors will especially enjoy the misty reprieve from Paris's heat and humidity.

Conciergerie Conciergerie

Located next to Sainte-Chapelle , the Conciergerie was once a royal residence for various French leaders. At the end of the 14th century, King Charles V and the rest of the palace's inhabitants moved to new residences at the Louvre . The abandoned building was then turned into a new parliament and office space for the kingdom. However, during the French Revolution (and for many decades thereafter), the Conciergerie served as a prison compound to hold both political and common criminals. Most famously, it held Marie Antoinette, the fallen queen of France, in the weeks before she was executed by guillotine in October 1793. In the 19th century, Antoinette's cell was transformed into a chapel, and in 1914 the entire building was deemed a historic monument and opened to the public.

Recent travelers said the site is a delight for history buffs. Still, others noted that if you aren’t particularly interested in the French Revolution or Marie Antoinette, you may find the empty jail cells and barren halls a bit dull. All visitors are given a "HistoPad" (available in six languages) to help enhance their experience. The iPad allows visitors to see what the rooms would've looked like centuries ago with the help of augmented reality, 3D reconstructions and interactive functionalities.What everyone seemed to agree on was the medieval architecture, which is said to be stunning both inside and out.

One of the most famous shopping streets in Paris, the elegant Rue de Rivoli is lined with neoclassical buildings housing designer boutiques, galleries, cafes and restaurants built into historic arcades. Recent travelers highly recommended strolling along the street to browse its historic arcades and shops, and many were impressed by the elaborate architecture. They also enjoyed the quiet atmosphere; the street went car-free in 2020, with only pedestrians, cyclists, buses and taxis now allowed here (its former lanes have been turned into a wide bike path, so it provides a welcome respite from the city's at-times hectic traffic). Others said it was a great spot for people-watching, although some said the shops can feel a little commercial.

Used as a royal hunting ground from the 12th century, this scenic, easterly refuge is Paris's biggest park, sprawling nearly 2,500 acres (making it nearly three times larger than New York's Central Park , and slightly bigger than its westerly sister, the Bois de Boulogne). It's home to verdant woodland as well as the Parc Floral, a botanical garden with its own mini golf course and various other family-friendly attractions. You'll also find four artificial lakes in the park – boats are available to rent on the Lac Daumesnil – alongside the Parc Zoologique de Paris, several cafes and restaurants and the Château de Vincennes, a lavish former royal residence built in the medieval era.

Set on the northern edge of Paris and home to the highest concentration of antiques dealers in the world, this famous flea market is a must for anyone looking to browse and buy vintage treasures. Spread across twelve covered markets and five streets, the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen houses everything from 17th-century furnishings to vintage jewelry, designer clothes, art, books and beyond. When your feet need a break, there are also a handful of restaurants.

At its heart is the Marché Vernaison, an eclectic mishmash of nearly a million objects, spread across nearly 100,000 square feet and selling pretty much anything you can think of. Equally unmissable is the Marché Dauphine, which sells books, vintage records, clothes and more in a huge pavilion, and the Marché Paul Bert Serpette, an upmarket spot specializing in avant-garde interior design that's seen everyone from Julia Roberts to Mick Jagger grace its floors.

Open to the public since October 2014, the Louis Vuitton Foundation is the brainchild of the LVMH Group (which owns luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton) and famed American architect Frank Gehry. In addition to the art gallery, Gehry also designed the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles , among other renowned museums, university buildings and residences. Outfitted with curved panels of glass and smooth concrete, the foundation's daring and modern design stands out among Paris' abundance of centuries-old buildings. Inside, you'll find collections of modern and contemporary art housed in both permanent and temporary exhibits. The museum's goal is to promote art and culture on the outskirts of Paris, and it succeeds by attracting more than 1 million visitors each year. 

Though the museum is a bit off the beaten path in the Bois de Boulogne in the 16th arrondissement, visitors loved taking in the architectural wonder and its surrounding gardens, as well as the unique exhibits inside. One common criticism was that the building was a bit far from the nearest metro station (about a 15-minute walk), so keep that in mind when planning your visit.

Paris is a gorgeous sprawl of beautiful monuments and interesting neighborhoods and, for many, walking is the way to go.

To cover the most ground, the convenient Paris metro blankets the city. Meanwhile, the comprehensive bus system allows you to sightsee while traveling , and cycling in the open air is as delightful as it looks. Here's what you need to know about Paris’ transport network, tickets and taxis.

The quickest way to get around is on the metro and RER

Paris’ train network consists of two separate but linked systems: the metro and the RER. The metro currently has 16 lines (numbered 1–14, plus two secondary lines, 3bis and 7bis). The network is currently being expanded to add another four lines as part of the Grand Paris Express project. The RER has five main lines, A to E. The systems are fully integrated and you can easily transfer from one train to another. RER express trains save time crossing the city and serve the suburbs.

Escalators and elevators ease long climbs within the stations, but are not available at every station. Service is very frequent, with wait times generally under five minutes. Some metro lines run above street level, offering scenic views. It's usually quicker to walk than to take the metro for only one or two stops.

For a better look at the city, hop on the bus

With no stairs, buses are widely accessible and are good for parents with prams/strollers and people with limited mobility. Bus lines complement the metro: for some journeys a bus is the more direct – and scenic – way to go. Stops show schedules, routes and often the wait time until the next bus.

A local’s tips for taking the metro, RER and bus

Use the RATP , IDF Mobilités and SNCF apps for journey planning, route maps and wait times for the next train or bus, or to charge up your travel passes. Also, metro and bus maps of various sizes and degrees of detail are available for free at metro ticket windows.

In metro stations and on board, keep an eye out for pickpockets – they’re top zones of action.

Sail in style on the Batobus

Combining scenery and convenience, the Batobus is a handy hop-on, hop-off service stopping at nine key destinations along the Seine. In warmer months the service runs regularly through the day and offers a chance for a river cruise at a fraction of the price of a tour boat.

Cycle the streets with Vélib’ bike-share

The Vélib’ bike-share scheme has over 20,000 bikes, both classic (green) and electric (blue) at 1400 stations citywide. Buy a subscription online using your RATP Navigo transit pass or credit card, or at docking stations (it only accepts European-compatible chip-and-pin credit cards). There are single-trip, day and multiday pass options. App-based electric trottinettes (scooters), wildly popular with tourists, were discontinued in September 2023 by popular vote.

Consider getting a Navigo transport pass

The cheapest and easiest way to use public transport in Paris is via the Navigo Easy card. Sold for €2 at all metro and RER ticket windows as well as RATP-affiliated outlets (eg tobacconists and markets), this credit-card-sized farecard is used for all your ticketing needs. You can also charge one up virtually on the RATP app for free.

Navigo, like London’s Oyster card or Hong Kong’s Octopus card, is a system that provides a full range of fare options. You load the card with value which is then deducted for each ride. To save money, buy carnets, which are credits for 10 rides sold at a discount (this is the cheapest way to ride the metro and buses). You can also buy various passes that are good for unlimited rides across a range of fare zones and durations (such as Mobilis, with one day of unlimited travel). However, one disadvantage of passes is that they are tied to the calendar eg a one-day pass starts at 12:01am, a seven-day pass always begins on Monday, and a monthly pass always begins on the first day of the month.

Paris transportation FAQ and things to consider

Is parking widely available in paris .

Parking in Paris is costly and difficult. If you’re renting a car to take to the countryside, don’t pick it up until you are leaving town. And if you’re driving your own car, know that to enter the city within the Boulevard Périphérique (ring road) between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday, a Crit'Air Vignette (compulsory anti-pollution sticker) is needed for all cars, motorcycles and trucks registered after 1997, including foreign-registered vehicles. Older vehicles are banned during these hours. The sticker is not necessary for the ring road itself.

Can I use taxis and ride-share apps?

Find taxis at official stands or via private companies and apps. There are queues of available cabs at major train stations. Paris taxis are expensive but can be a blessing if you have a lot of luggage and can't face the metro steps. Ride-share apps like Uber are active.

What’s the best way to get into the city from the airport?

Trains are the best ways to get to and from Paris' airports. The RER B line from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) crosses under the middle of Paris, with stops that include Gare du Nord, Châtelet–Les Halles, St-Michel–Notre Dame and Luxembourg. Some trains run express through the suburbs, saving about 10 minutes. An even faster express route is slated for 2027. From Orly Airport, you can connect to the RER B. Beginning in mid-2024, the airport will also be served by Line 14 of the metro. Aéroport de Beauvais, used by some budget airlines, is a long and slow 75km (47 miles) by bus from Paris.

Taxis and ride shares are also convenient, but can get mired in traffic and become costly.

Paris is working to make its transportation more accessible

Paris is an ancient city and therefore not particularly well equipped for visiteurs handicapés (disabled visitors): kerb ramps are few and older public facilities and the metro are mostly inaccessible for those in a wheelchair (fauteuil roulant) . Efforts are being made to improve things, however, especially ahead of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games .

Paris’ airports are fully in line with international standards for accessibility. Note however that transport to and from the airports may be an issue as many metro stations in the city are not fully accessible – the RATP makes info available through its app and website. Paris buses, however, are all accessible, with low floors and wide doors.

The SNCF has made many of its train carriages more accessible to people with disabilities, including the RER trains. For information and advice on planning your journey from station to station, contact the service Accès Plus .

Taxis G7 has hundreds of low-base cars and over 100 cars equipped with ramps, and drivers trained in helping passengers with disabilities. Guide dogs are accepted in its entire fleet.

#1 Have Picnic at Jardin du Luxembourg 

Paris boasts plenty of pretty parks , and the Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the city’s very best. The tree-lined lanes, ponds, and lawns are incredibly well-maintained and make for the perfect setting for a romantic stroll with your loved one. But before making your way to the Jardin du Luxembourg, pass by one of Paris’ many grocery stores. It’s the perfect occasion to buy some delicious French foods and wine to bring to this wonderful garden.   

After your relaxing walk in the park, make yourself comfortable to feast on your groceries. You’re only allowed to spread out your picnic blanket on the grass in a small part of the park.

However, the loveliest way to enjoy your picnic in the Jardin du Luxembourg is by taking two of the typical green metal chairs to a quiet corner of the park. Ideally, you still have a view of the stunning Palais du Luxembourg and the big pond in front of it. As dusk sets in, Paris becomes even more romantic than under the sun. When the city’s crown jewel sparkles adorning its sky, the magic spell at the City of Light begins.

The Eiffel Tower shines over Paris  every day from sunset to 1 am for 5 minutes every hour. The final show at 1 am is the most spectacular one to witness if you can catch it; the golden sparkle turns to a white twinkle that lasts for 10 minutes before the light gets turned off.  

The Light Show is free, and you can catch it from many of the fantastic Eiffel Tower Viewpoints throughout Paris. Head over to rooftop restaurants, grab a seat along the Seine River, or watch it from the Trocadero across the river, to name a few.

However, the best place to witness the iconic light show up close and personal is from the Champs de Mars. The Champs de Mars is a grand public park in the 7th arrondissement. The 780-meter-long lawn runs beneath the Eiffel Tower. 

Grab a spot on the grass, and voilà, you have secured the most romantic spot in the city for the light show. Don’t forget to bring a bottle of wine and snacks to enjoy a French Apéro . Visiting a cozy wine bar is a wonderfully romantic and intimate way to spend an evening in Paris. There, you can enjoy a relaxed evening with your date without the hustle and bustle of the city, sipping wine and sampling some local cuisine. Paris has many wine bars, but my favorite is Augustin Marchand d’Vins , a charming spot in the 6th arrondissement . The place is so cozy and has only about 6 tables in the space, so you’ll definitely want to make a reservation if you’d like to experience this restaurant while you’re visiting Paris. 

The menu at Augustin Marchand d’Vins is seasonal and local, featuring many fruits and vegetables as well as local meats and cheeses. To pair with your meal, Augustin, the owner, will help you to select the perfect bottle of wine from the dozens proudly displayed throughout the shop. If you love the wine you select, you’re welcome to buy a bottle to take home at a “takeaway” price. Dinner with wine at Augustin Marchand d’Vins runs about 80 euros per person.

#6 Explore Parc André Citroën and Paris’s Hot Air Balloon

Couples flock to the Eiffel Tower for romantic city views, but for fewer crowds, consider taking a ride on the world’s largest hot-air balloon, Ballon de Paris Generali. The balloon is located in Parc André Citroën, about a 30-minute walk south along the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower.

Cuddle up with your partner while taking in stunning views of Paris from 300 meters (980 feet) above the ground. The balloon’s “basket” is safely enclosed by metal guardrails and the balloon itself is tethered to the ground, making for a less intimidating way to ride. Adult tickets cost just 15 Euros each.

After your balloon ride, enjoy strolling through the romantic Parc André Citroën, one of Paris’s most unusual public parks. Here you’ll find greenhouses, a reflecting pool, dancing fountains, and six serial gardens—each representing a specific metal, planet, day of the week, state of the water, and physical sense. It’s a great place to walk around, and it’s also one of the most romantic places in the city. The special charm of Montmartre at night is certainly that it is not deserted, but the big crowds from the day are gone, and you might find yourself even alone with your partner in one of the cute alleys. Plus, you have so wonderful views from this hilltop neighborhood, when the illuminated city stretches out to your feet, that you should not miss.

The Pont des Arts were formerly known as the Love lock bridge, the place where lovers attached a lock to the bridge and then threw the key into the river as a symbol of their love.

By now, the locks have been removed, and you really should not revive this tradition. Firstly because the additional weight was damaging the bridge, and secondly because the keys heavily disturbed the ecosystem of the Seine river. But even without love locks, the Pont des Arts is still a beautiful location, and it’s a great place to enjoy the views of Paris.

It’s a pedestrian wood bridge from where you have a wonderful view of the Île-de-la-Cité and Notre Dame. The Pont des Arts is also a popular spot to gather during summer and enjoy the evenings.

During the first days of the month, the weather can be more unpredictable, and the cold continues to make itself felt.

Although there have been years where it has snowed a little during these first days of March, it is not the most usual.

What is more typical is that there are isolated episodes of rain , so be prepared.

By the middle and end of the month, the clouds move away, and the rains stop coming so often.

The mornings and evenings are usually cold, but the presence of the sun during the day makes the weather more temperate and pleasant for walking and visiting.

• Average temperatures: between 5°C and 13°C

You should bring warm clothes if you travel during the month’s first days . A good jacket, even better if it is waterproof, comfortable and warm shoes, a pair of gloves, something for the neck and maybe a hat.

Also, it is essential to remember that isolated showers may occur at the beginning of the month, so carrying an umbrella would be a good idea.

For the middle and end of the month , you must remember that the weather in Paris in March shows a large thermal amplitude .

So during the mornings and evenings, you will probably wear warmer clothes, and during the day, when the sun is shining, you will be able to take off some clothes.

Also, as sunny days are more likely, don’t forget to wear sunglasses by the end of the month.

Eiffel Tower

As it could not be otherwise, we start with the classic and exceptional Eiffel Tower .

The famous engineer Gustave Eiffel built the tower for the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889.

And although at first it was not very successful and was not very popular among Parisians, today it is the distinctive symbol of Paris and the most visited monument in the world, with more than 7 million people a year.

To go up, you have three options:

• You can walk up to the second floor (674 steps). It takes approximately 30-45 minutes and is the most economical option.
• You can take the elevator to the second floor or the top. The price to climb to the top is approximately 10€ more.
• You can also combine both ways, and you can walk up to the second floor and continue from there by elevator to the top.

If you choose to walk up to freely enjoy this architectural work, you have to consider that it is not accessible for very young children or people with reduced mobility.

It is best to go up at sunset to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the entire city by day and night.

The Moulin Rouge is the most famous cabaret of all time, the birthplace of the signature can-can dance, and has hosted such renowned artists as Edith Piaf, Frank Sinatra, and Liza Minelli.

Seeing a show at the Moulin Rouge would be the ideal way to visit. Although tickets are not always very economical, it is definitely an exceptional experience.

If you decide not to see a show this time, I still recommend that you go to see it from the outside and take some pictures .

However, remember that this mythical place leaves a lot to be desired during the day. At night, with the lights on, the Moulin Rouge conveys a bit of its true magic from the outside.

Montmartre district

With its bohemian air and street artists, the Montmartre district is one of the most beautiful in Paris and a must-see any time of the year.

March is a perfect month to make a trip to Disneyland Paris. The weather is usually good, and the lines at the rides tend to go faster because the groups of visitors are smaller.

The Disneyland Paris complex houses two parks: Disneyland and Walt Disney Studios . On the excursion, you can visit only one or both parks, as you prefer.

The parks are not that big and since there are not many people in March you will have enough time to visit both parks.

Bois de Vincennes

Bois de Vincennes is a Parisian park located in the east of the city, on the edge of the 12th arrondissement. It can be explored on foot or by bike and has relaxation, fun, and sports facilities.

A mythical race takes place between March and April in the city: the Paris Marathon.

Every year around 4,000 women or men dressed as women parade through the city .

The theme of the parade changes yearly, and the route usually starts from the Gambetta metro station and ends at the place de la République.

Access is free , and anyone who wishes to participate may do so.

Arc de Triomphe

It is inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome and is today the best-known Arc de Triomphe in the world.

With a height of 50 meters, it is located in the center of the largest traffic circle in the world. To cross, you have to use stairs that are underground.

If you wish, you can go up to the viewpoint at the Arc de Triomphe, which offers wonderful views of the Champs Elysees and Paris in general. In addition, under the arch is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier .

Cherry Blossoms in Paris

Cherry blossoms bloom in Paris between March and April with the arrival of spring, and with their pink color, they adorn the city and conquer photographers and travelers.

Visiting some of the splendid museums in Paris is always a good option when it rains, but here are some more ideas:

• Visit the Louvre Museum : Thousands of works of art await you in the largest museum in the world, where great artists such as Da Vinci, Titian, or Delacroix stand out.
• Visit the Pompidou Center : the modern art museum characteristic of Paris. Its avant-garde architecture attracts the attention of all who see it, and its interior captivates the most curious.
• Visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum : The works of the legendary couturier are exhibited in his former haute couture house.
• Create your own perfume , a most entertaining option. Take a guided tour of the Fragonard Perfume Museum and participate in a perfume-making workshop.

Hello! Carnaval des femmes will take part at 19 march. So in this time may i have issues about metro, rer or buses? I will come to paris at 16 march and i will return at 19 march. I will go to the airport about 11-12am, will i have issues ?

Hi Sophie, It is not expected that there will be any problem with the metro for that date, but it is better to look at it a few days before. For a few weeks, we have been having strikes on the trains, hopefully, it will be resolved soon!

For convenience’s sake, I have listed the French cities near Paris from closest to farthest though they may not necessarily be in the same direction.

1. Chantilly

• Travel time: 25 mins from Gare du Nord by train or 40 mins if you rent a car and drive to Chantilly .
• Where to stay in Chantilly: Budget hotel (2 stars)| Mid-range Hotel (Bed & Breakfast)| Luxury Hotel (5 stars).

Famously known because of an opulent Château which takes on the same name as the city, Chantilly is the nearest city to Paris!

Though Château de Chantilly is usually thought of as just one castle, it is in fact made of 2 Châteaux – the Petit Château and the Grand Château which together form the Domaine de Chantilly.

The entire Domaine houses several museums including the Living Museum of the Horse or Musée du Cheval , Musée Condé , Musée de la Dentelle , Great Stables or the Grandes Ecuries (which are the largest horse stables in Europe), and the immaculately maintained gardens.

Besides the castle, you can also marvel at the Church of Notre Dame of Chantilly which you can find near the Great Stables of Domaine de Chantilly.

If a long walk surrounded by nature is what you long for, look no further than the Chantilly Forest.

While in this beautiful town, don’t forget to try the eponymous French Chantilly Cream (Crème Chantilly) which has influenced the whipped cream business all around France. In fact, whipped cream is referred to as creme chantilly or just la chantilly everywhere in the country.

Since I’ve mentioned Versailles, I should also add the lesser crowded alternative; the gorgeous Château de Fontainebleau located in the beautiful town of Fontainebleau.

Besides its grandeur architecture and the famous Horseshoe staircase, this UNESCO-listed site houses Marie Antoinette’s bed and Napoleon’s throne among other royal artifacts.

The castle is also surrounded by beautiful gardens which take on different designs including the French formal garden style and the French landscape garden.

If you’re a history buff, then the Napoleon Museum of History and Art and the Obelisk of Marie Antoinette will fascinate you.

What makes this castle even more special is that it’s the only château to have been continuously inhabited for 7 centuries by the French royal families with each royal family adding its unique taste and architectural design to what we see today. It is the only château in France to have this honor.

Hikers, picnic goers, and equestrians will be delighted with the scenic Fontainebleau Forest and its offerings.

The bustling city center, the beautiful French and Dutch-inspired architecture, and the thriving nightlife all make the city of Lille a cultural hub perfect for both youngsters and history nerds.

The highlight of course is the old town that has a Flemish touch. From the 18th-century houses, cobblestone streets, and baroque buildings, Old Lille will definitely grab your attention.

Stroll around its main square known as the Grand Place to either people watch, rub shoulders with the locals, or even admire the Colonne de la Déesse (The Column of the Goddess).

Some of the other places worth visiting while in Lille include;   Maison Natale Charles de Gaulle which is the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, a former President of France who played a huge role in shaping the history of the country, La Maison Meert to taste the traditional thin-waffle delicacy, Le Palais Des Beaux Arts De Lille which is one of the largest museums in France dedicated to art and antiquities, Citadelle de Lille to learn about the history of the city and so many others.

Since it’s near, it can easily be treated as a day trip from Paris but if you prefer to sleep there, I recommend staying at this hotel .

And while you can visit independently, I recommend booking this 2-hour guided walking tour that will take you through all the major highlights of the city especially if you’re just visiting for a day.

5. Auvers-Sur-Oise

• Travel time: 1 hour by train departing from Gare du Nord .
• Where to stay in Auvers-Sur-Oise: Budget hotel (Bed & Breakfast) | Mid-range Hotel (4 stars) | Luxury Hotel (Bed & Breakfast).

This small and underrated hamlet caught the fancy of none other than the famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh , who lived here for a couple of months before his death. Actually, it is also his and his brother’s resting place.

Château d’Auvers , which is located close to the station, is a 19th-century palace that looks magnificent and is worth checking out.

The église d’Auvers or the Church at Auvers is also another attraction depicted beautifully in Van Gogh’s painting of the same name.

To get your spirits up, quite literally, you can visit the only absinthe museum in the world located in Auvers at the Musée de l’Absinthe . Right from its history to abuse to actually tasting it (if you can risk it), you can experience it all.

• Travel time: A 1-hour drive by car or 2 hours 30 mins by train will get you from Paris to Giverny.
• Where to stay in Giverny: Budget hotel (Bed & Breakfast) | Mid-range Hotel (Holiday home) | Luxury Hotel (Guest house).

This quaint village is famous because Claude Monet lived here for over 4 decades and died here as well. The picturesque surroundings are probably what draws aesthetes here and inspires them.

For example, the Giverny Gardens with the iconic water lily pond and Japanese bridge are what inspired some of Monet’s most famous paintings .

Art lovers can also check out the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny or Museum of Impressionism Giverny which as the name suggests is dedicated to the art and history of Impressionism.

7. Chartres

• Travel time: 50 mins drive by car and 1 hour by train .

Chartres is most famous for the Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral which is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site but also one of the best-preserved cathedrals from the 13 th century.

The two differently built and decorated spires on the exterior with its Gothic art and stained glass windows on the interior are what will grab your attention when you visit the cathedral.

Do not miss the Chartres Light Show or Chartres En Lumieres if you visit between the end of April to mid-October. Once it’s nightfall, 25 buildings across Chartres, including Notre-Dame de Chartres, illuminate with impressive light shows.

Another unique charm of this town is Maison Picassiette , which is a short bus ride away. Raymond Isidore the man who built this house used different bits and materials to decorate it.

You will be fascinated to find everything from glass shards to pieces of wood to bottle caps used in a creative manner.

Plus, the sculpture garden behind his cottage has mosaic replicas of stained-glass windows of Notre Dame de Chartres, an old windmill, and even the Eiffel Tower .

• Travel time: 1 hour 30 mins from Gare de l’Est by train .

The town of Provins is another UNESCO World Heritage site that you should visit if you want to be transported back in time.

Everything about it screams medieval and dates back centuries like the 12th-century medieval tower, Tour César , or the medieval tunnels, Les Souterrains de Provins .

The city also holds a medieval Christmas market annually which you can visit if you go around Christmastime .

The town itself is pretty laidback but it does have medieval shows that you can watch like knights performing with horses and falconry.

You can also visit or attend mass at Saint-Quiriace Collegiate Church , a church where Joan of Arc attended mass.

One of the other interesting things to do in Provins is to walk up Saint-Jean’s Gate and climb the medieval ramparts.

Though some of the walls are no longer there, the few that exist are well maintained so you’ll be able to enjoy the construction that dates back to the 12th century.

Situated in the northern region of France, Amiens is one of the cutest cities near Paris.

The Amiens Cathedral or Cathédrale Notre-Dame d’Amiens which is the most famous attraction in the city is also the largest cathedral in France.

This UNESCO site which stands tall at over 42 meters (137 feet) will mesmerize you with its intricate façade, oak choir stalls, and gothic carvings.

If you’re a bibliophile and know of Jules Verne or have read his books, then you should also know that he spent a big part of his life in this city specifically in Maison de Jules Verne which now houses models of innovations and the Winter Garden.

For fine art lovers, the Musée de Picardie will amaze you. It includes artifacts and masterpieces right from the prehistoric era.

Also, the Quartier Saint-Leu, a medieval quarter in Amiens will have you exploring and trying out different restaurants, cafés, and boutiques.

10. Strasbourg

• Travel time: 2 hours from Gare de l’Est by train .

Apart from being a poster town for the Christmas Market or Marché de Noel, Strasbourg offers so much more.

For example, the Saint-Pierre Le Jeune Church has a unique history that you may not know about. Until recently, neither did I.

This neo-Romanesque church started off as a Catholic church and was converted to a Protestant one.

Later on, for nearly 2 centuries, it was split among the Protestants and the Catholics by a dividing wall inside.

In 1898, the New Saint-Pierre Le Jeune Church was constructed and the Catholic congregation moved there and the wall was taken down. It is now back to being a Protestant church.

Then there’s the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg with its beautiful Gothic architecture in red sandstone and stained glass windows from the 12 th and 13 th centuries.

Even Strasbourg’s historical centre, the Grande-Île district, is a UNESCO-listed site. Beyond the impressive architecture that portrays both the German and French styles, there is so much to do and see in Strasbourg.

From Place Kleber , a beautiful square, Palais Rohan a beautiful palace near Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg to Petite France which is the most beautiful place in the city with its colorful half-timbered houses lined along the river.

With all this beauty, it’s not hard to see why Strasbourg is one of the most beautiful cities near Paris to visit.

To make your visit to Strasbourg smooth, you can pre-book your activities in advance to be guaranteed a spot.

11. Chablis

• Travel time: 2 hours’ drive by car from Paris will get you to Chablis or around 3 hours by train.

Other notable things to do that make Chablis worth visiting include visiting Saint-Pierre and Saint-Martin churches , admiring the beautiful old town, and ofcourse visiting the various vineyards.

In brief, Chablis is one of the towns near Paris perfect for wine lovers!

12. Loire Valley

• Travel time: To get to the Loire Valley region, you will have to rent a car and it takes about 2 hours 15 mins or 1 hour 30 mins by train.

Loire Valley is one of the best regions to savor your wine. Where are the oenophiles at? Besides that, it also has the largest concentration of châteaux in France .

Here, even some of the châteaux have their own vineyards so if you like castles, adore your “Vin” time, and want to feel like royalty while you’re at it, this is the ideal place to go.

Some of the famous châteaux worth visiting include Château de Chambord , Château de Amboise , Château Royal de Blois , Château de Chenonceau and so many others.

And when you’re not drinking amazing wine or getting lost in one of the Loire Castles, take a tour of Tours, a picturesque town located between two rivers (Cher and Loire).

You can immerse yourself in art at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours which houses masterpieces by Monet and Rembrandt.

What’s more, you ask? Well, it lies on the Alsace wine tour route along with other smaller villages in the vicinity.

If riding in a boat through the canals of Venice was on your bucket list of things to do but the crowds put you off, Colmar offers a less crowded alternative in Little Venice .

The canal area with its two dreamy bridges albeit small will offer you just as much if not a more scenic and romantic setting.

If you happen to be here around Christmas, then the Les Marchés de Noel are worth staying for.

14.  Normandy

• Travel time: A 2 hour 45 mins drive by car and around 2 hours 30 mins by train.

Located along the English Channel, Normandy is one of the cities close to Paris that sits on years of history (and terror in some instances)!

What sets Normandy apart compared to other closest cities to Paris is that it has a little bit of everything!

You can find stunning beaches to relax on, impressive natural landmarks and human-made monuments , castles, and museums to get lost in history, and small towns and villages to connect with the locals.

Visit the town of Étretat to the North of Normandy to enjoy a cliffside picnic while enjoying the breathtaking view of the English Channel or admire the beauty of the white chalk cliffs.

The famous D-Day beaches out of which Omaha beach is the most popular is a 1 hour 30 mins drive from Normandy if you fancy some sunbathing while learning more history about the D-day landing.

Another site worth making a trip to is the Mont Saint-Michel , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose abbey rises to 100m (328 ft.) tall. (Make sure you buy this entry ticket to Mont Sant Michel in advance .)

But beware, during high tide, it becomes an island accessible only by one road. The Abbey has 350 steps to the highest point but the view from there is worth the effort.

You can also explore the Museum of the Battle of Normandy to learn more about WWII, wander around Honfleur , chill on the beaches of Deauville , or visit Château de Fontaine-Henry which is the most beautiful castle in Normandy.

• Cancel their itinerary and apply the value of the original ticket towards the purchase of a new ticket for travel commencing within 1 year from the date of original issuance
• Change fee only is waived as long as the original ticket is reissued within ticket validity and the impact dates are in accordance with those identified in the Travel Notice
• Basic Economy fares may only be used towards the purchase of other Basic Economy fares.
• Residual MCO's are not allowed when using the TNADVE waiver code for reissue.
• Extend Travel Rebooking does not apply to tickets in conjunction with Instant Upsell (IU)

Refund Policy Information

When the flight is cancelled or the length of delay is 91+ minutes , travel agents may refund ticket(s) through normal GDS/ARC/BSP processing. Refer to our Schedule Irregularity policy for delays 90 minutes or less.

• Travel must commence no later than one year from the date of original issuance.

En route/Diversion

• Connecting customers' en route to one of the above-listed destinations or whose flights are diverted will have the option to return to their original departure city and rebook travel to alternate future dates.
• Customers should work directly with the airport to obtain a boarding pass for return travel to their original departure city. If the customer wishes to rebook travel to alternate future dates, please contact American Airlines Reservations for assistance. Alternatively, they may receive a refund if re-accommodation options are unacceptable.

Russian jets have already used more than 9,000 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine this year, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

The recent pause in US funding helped Moscow to seize the initiative, the Ukrainian president added.

He is asking for additional Patriot air defence systems to be supplied, saying at least seven are required.

"We urgently need Patriot systems and missiles for them," he said. 

"This is what can and should save lives right now."

He added: "We need the ability to shoot down the air combat aircraft so that they do not approach our positions and borders," Mr Zelenskyy said at the start of a virtual meeting led by the United States.

Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, said the meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group - a coalition of about 50 countries - would focus on Ukraine's air defence capabilities.

As we have been reporting, the US has finally passed a new $61bn (£49bn) programme of funding for Kyiv into law.

Will the Ukrainians have another spring offensive or wait again until the summer? Declan

Military analyst Sean Bell answers this one...

Thank you for this interesting question, Declan.

For the past few months, the tide of the war in Ukraine has been in Russia's favour as shortages of weapons have limited Ukraine's strategic options.  

Russia has been attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure and major cities with barrages of missile and drones, leaving Ukraine with critical shortages of aid defence missiles.  

The Russian air force has also been more active in support of its frontline forces, capitalising on Ukraine's growing shortage of defensive missile capability.

Despite the broad spectrum of military action from both sides, the primary metric of success in this conflict is territory gained/liberated, and Russia has been focusing its ground forces on the Donbas region.

Putin's long game

Despite suffering huge casualties, Russian forces have clearly been capitalising on Ukraine's dwindling stocks of artillery shells and bullets to gain momentum on the front line.

Vladimir Putin is evidently playing the long game here, as he always anticipated that the West's enthusiasm to support Ukraine would wane, leaving Russia to achieve its invasion objectives.

Although the recent announcement of a new package of $60bn military aid from the US will be welcome news for Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the immediate challenge will be to translate the commitment of cash into weapons and ammunition in the hands of the Ukrainian fighters - and swiftly.  

Momentum is invaluable in military operations, and reversing Russian progress across the frontline will be one of Ukraine's main priorities this spring/summer.

Having stabilised the frontline, Ukraine's attention can then turn to the wider strategy of "what next".

Last year's much anticipated "spring offensive" failed to make significant territorial gains, so Ukraine will need to reconsider its wider strategy to focus its limited resources most effectively.

Feast-famine approach won't work

Longer-term, the West needs to agree its strategic approach to the conflict.

Large-scale conflicts consume munitions and weapons at a rate well beyond the capacity of peacetime stockpiles, and require an industrialisation of national defence industries to produce the huge volumes required.

Russia has grown its defence industrial base to three times its pre-war levels, and is also using oil revenues to fund munitions imports from North Korea and Iran.

The West has yet to match this capacity.  

If Ukraine is to prevail in the war with Russia, it will need a predictable and sustainable supply of weapons - not the feast/famine approach that has characterised the past two years.

The West has the defence industrial capability to over-match Russia, but has yet to demonstrate the political resolve to fulfil that potential.

West's political will is key

In the meantime, Russia knows that a more direct engagement by the West in support of Ukraine would be decisive - Russia could not achieve its war aims.

That is why President Putin and Russian foreign minister Lavrov use threatening rhetoric whenever the West considers increasing support for Ukraine, with regular threats that such support would increase the risk of nuclear war.

However, it is Russia that invaded Ukraine, and it is Russia's military action that is causing such devastation to Ukrainian communities across the frontline.

Ultimately, the West can halt Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine - by providing weapons, boots on the ground and/or establishing a no-fly-zone - if it has the political resolve to do so.

If not, this latest round of military aid to Ukraine risks being seen as a short-term palliative, without a long-term strategy.

The United States is sending weapons and equipment to Ukraine "this week", Joe Biden has said.

Referring to a $61bn (£49bn) programme of funding for Kyiv that has finally been passed by Congress following a long delay, the president said he had signed it quickly into law.

It arrived on his desk early on Wednesday, he said, and he approved it before midday.

The new items will help to defend Ukraine from "Russian bombardment", he said.

Earlier (06.54) we reported that the US is expected to announce about $6bn (£4.8bn) in military aid to Ukraine today. 

A British man has been charged with conducting hostile state activity to benefit Russia, prosecutors have said.

Dylan Earl, 20, is alleged to have targeted businesses linked to Ukraine to benefit the Russian state.

Nick Price, head of the CPS's special crime and counterterrorism division, said: "Included in the alleged activity was involvement in the planning of an arson attack on a Ukrainian-linked commercial property in March 2024."

Four others have also been charged in connection with the investigation, the CPS said, after reporting restrictions were lifted today.

China is "frightened" of evoking US sanctions but is still getting "right up to the line" in assisting the Russian war effort, Professor Michael Clarke has said.

Analysing remarks by the US secretary of state (see previous post) that Washington has serious concerns about China providing weapons components to Russia, our military analyst said China is carefully calibrating its actions.

Those components - while not particularly sophisticated - are needed for missiles and high-tech weapons, Prof Clarke said.

He explained: "It's been known for a long time that the Chinese are supplying these.

"They're not supplying Russia with weapons because they're frightened of American sanctions. 

"They're certainly frightened of secondary sanctions, whereby the Americans can sanction a company dealing with a company that supplies to Russia."

Despite that fear, however, Prof Clarke said the Chinese have "gone right up to the line in assisting Russia without obviously sending them weapons".

In addition, they are facilitating the supply of weapons from North Korea to Russia, he added. 

Russia would struggle to sustain its invasion of Ukraine without China's help, the US secretary of state has said.

Antony Blinken - speaking in Beijing following talks with China's top diplomat, Wang Yi - said he had "reiterated" serious concerns about China providing components that are "powering Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine".

He added: "China is the top supplier of machine tools, microelectronics and nitrocellulose, which is critical to making munitions and rocket propellants and other dual-use items that Moscow is using to ramp its defence industrial base," he said during a news conference.

That industrial base is "churning out rockets, drones, tanks and other weapons that President Putin is using to invade a sovereign country", he added.

Those weapons are being used to "demolish a power grid and other civilian infrastructure and to kill innocent children, women and men", Mr Blinken said.

He went on: "Russia would struggle to sustain its assault on Ukraine without China's support.

"In my meetings with NATO's allies earlier this month and with our G7 partners just last week, I heard that same message: fuelling Russia's defence industrial base not only threatens Ukrainian security, it threatens European security. 

"Beijing cannot achieve better relations with Europe while supporting the greatest threat to European security since the end of the Cold War. 

"As we've told China for some time, ensuring transatlantic security is a core US interest. 

"In our discussions today, I made it clear that if China does not address this problem, we will."

At least four people were injured after Russia bombed an industrial site and a residential building in northeastern Ukraine, local officials have said. 

Three children and a woman were hurt when munitions hit a central part of the town of Derhachi in the Kharkiv region, governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Telegram. 

In the Sumy region, two bombs struck an industrial facility, regional authorities said.

The neighbouring regions, which border Russia, have undergone frequent aerial attacks.

In recent weeks, more intensive strikes have hit civilian and energy infrastructure.

A journalist working for the Russian edition of Forbes magazine has been detained on suspicion of spreading "fake news" about the Russian army, the magazine has said on its website.

Sergei Mingazov is being held in a detention centre in the far eastern city of Khabarovsk, according to his lawyer, Konstantin Bubon.

There has been no contact with the journalist, Forbes reported.

The extraordinary, unprecedented and largely unexplained flows of millions of pounds of British luxury cars into states neighbouring Russia continued in February, according to new official data.

Some £26m worth of British cars were exported to Azerbaijan, according to HM Revenue & Customs.

In the latest quarter this former Soviet state - which has developing economy status - was the 17th largest destination for UK cars, and bigger than long-established export markets such as Ireland, Portugal and Qatar, the numbers show.
