Which southwest rapid rewards® credit card is right for me.

southwest travel rewards credit card

If you're ready to hit the skies, a Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card may be the next credit card in your wallet. With three great options, the Southwest Credit Card trio comes with a variety of perks and their exclusive loyalty program, Southwest Rapid Rewards. Southwest Credit Cards include the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card, and Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card. The next step is figuring out which one is right for you.

What is the Southwest Rapid Rewards program?

The Rapid Rewards program is the points program used by Southwest Airlines ® and its partners. As a Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmember, you have access to a range of benefits that help you get the most from your travel and your card. Once you start using your card, you may earn points for every dollar spent on Southwest ® flights, as well as with every dollar spent on the airline's hotel, car rental, and retail partners. In addition, Cardmembers may earn points through everyday purchases.

In addition to using points for reward flights, Cardmembers may also use their points for gift cards, merchandise, international flights on global carriers, hotel stays, rental cars, and exclusive Cardmember events. With the Rapid Rewards ® program, your points don't expire as long as the account remains open, and if you're short on points to qualify for an experience, you may purchase more.

Southwest Priority Card Benefits

The Southwest Priority card is the premium option of the 3 personal Southwest card options. Because of that, it offers the most benefits but also comes with the highest annual fee. When weighing the Southwest Priority card perks against the annual fee, you’ll discover that this card provides the most bang for your buck, so to speak, of all of the personal Southwest credit cards .

In fact, there are 2 Southwest Priority card benefits that are worth more than the annual fee alone. Let’s take a closer look at all of this card’s benefits so you can decide if it’s the right card for you.

One of the biggest benefits of the Southwest Priority card is the ability to earn lots of Rapid Rewards points. Here’s a look at how you can earn points with this card:

  • 3x points on Southwest Airlines purchases made directly with the airline
  • 2x points on Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partners
  • 2x points on local transit and commuting, including rideshares
  • 2x points on internet, cable, and phone services
  • 2x points on select streaming services
  • 1x points on all other purchases

Bottom Line: The Southwest Priority card may be the best option for most Southwest travelers since the benefits far outweigh the cost of the card’s annual fee.

One of the biggest differences between Southwest Airlines and everyone else is its boarding process . On Southwest Airlines, there aren’t any assigned seats. Instead, each passenger gets a boarding position which is based on a few factors including elite status and check-in time.

EarlyBird Check-In is a service that will automatically check you in for your Southwest flight so you don’t have to worry about it.

The other way you can ensure a better boarding position is by utilizing Upgraded Boarding which gets you a coveted A1 to A15 boarding position. With the Southwest Priority card, you’ll get 4 complimentary Upgraded Boardings per year.

These charges will be automatically refunded when you pay for them with your card:

Southwest Airlines Upgraded Boarding Credit

Keep in mind that Upgraded Boarding is available per segment, so if your itinerary has 2 flights, you’ll need 2 Upgraded Boardings. It’s also possible to upgrade a single segment on an itinerary.

Southwest Airlines Upgraded Boarding starts at $30 per flight segment, so this can be a very valuable benefit. It’s available for purchase beginning 24 hours before a flight. If Business Select seats (A1 to A15) are sold out, Upgraded Boarding won’t be available for purchase.

Bottom Line: Southwest Upgraded Boarding is one of the best ways to secure an A boarding position. The Southwest Priority card comes with 4 complimentary Upgraded Boardings per year.

The $75 annual travel credit that comes with the Southwest Priority card is incredibly easy to use and it doesn’t require any registration. The first $75 in Southwest Airlines charges on your card will be automatically reimbursed. It doesn’t matter if it’s 1 charge or multiple small charges.

Southwest Priorty card $75 credit

If you usually use Rapid Rewards points to book your flights, you’ll be pleased to know that the $5.60 taxes and fees charge does trigger the $75 credit.

After your card account anniversary, you’ll receive 7,500 bonus points . These points will be automatically applied to your account each year that your Southwest Priority card is renewed.

Since Southwest Rapid Rewards points have a value of ~1.3 cents each, this bonus is worth $97.50 .

Hot Tip: The value of the $75 annual credit plus 7,500 anniversary points is worth more than the cost of the annual fee ! These 2 benefits alone make the Southwest Priority card worth it for many travelers.

The Southwest Priority card offers benefits to those looking to earn Southwest elite status . For every $5,000 spent annually on the card, you’ll earn 1,500 tier qualifying points toward A-List and A-List Preferred status.

For this perk, “annual” doesn’t mean calendar year; instead, it’s based on your December statement date.

As a reminder, A-List status requires 35,000 tier qualifying points. In theory, you could earn that by spending $233,333 on the Southwest Priority card annually. While that’s not necessarily recommended, it’s great to be able to earn some extra tier qualifying points with as little as $10,000 in annual spending.

The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the best deals in travel. It allows you to bring a companion on any and every Southwest flight for only the cost of taxes and fees ($5.60 one way for a domestic flight) for up to 2 years!

To earn the Southwest Companion Pass, you need to earn 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year. However, Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cardholders get a 10,000-point boost each year toward Companion Pass qualification. These points aren’t redeemable, rather they act as a way to reduce the required number of points to earn a Companion Pass to 125,000 instead of 135,000.

10k Companion Pass points boost on Southwest Priority card

You can save 25% on inflight purchases including drinks and Wi-Fi by using the Southwest Priority card. The discount will come as a statement credit that should post to your account on the same day as the purchase. This discount is extended to any authorized users on the card as well.

Southwest Priority cardholders and authorized users are eligible for a complimentary 1-year subscription to DoorDash DashPass which comes with perks like a $0 delivery fee on restaurant orders and a 5% DoorDash credit on pick-up orders.

The complimentary DashPass membership needs to be activated by December 31, 2024, and your Southwest Priority card needs to be added to your DoorDash account as the default payment method.

When you pay for part or all of your travel (by air, bus, train, or cruise) with your Southwest Priority card, you’ll be eligible for 2 types of travel accident insurance with a benefit of up to $250,000 .

This insurance provides coverage for accidental death or dismemberment or a combined loss of speech, sight, or hearing during a trip. The cardholder and immediate family members are covered.

  • Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance : Covers losses when entering, exiting, or riding as a passenger on a common carrier including an airline, bus, train, or cruise ship.
  • 24-Hour Travel Accident Insurance : Covers losses starting on the day of departure (on a scheduled airline trip) and ending on the day of return.

To be eligible, the cardholder must submit a written claim within 20 days of the incident.

There are many credit cards that come with car rental insurance, and the Southwest Priority card is no exception. The coverage is secondary which means it acts as a supplement to any other insurance you may have. To be eligible, the entire car rental cost must be charged to your card and you must decline the car rental company’s insurance policy.

The cardmember plus any additional authorized drivers on the car rental agreement are covered.

Hot Tip: There are many credit cards that offer this benefit. Here is a full list of cards that come with car rental insurance .

If you check bags often enough, it’s likely you’ll be affected by a baggage delay at some point. The Southwest Priority card offers reimbursement for basic items like toiletries and clothing when your bags are delayed more than 6 hours by a common carrier (airline, bus, train, or cruise ship). This benefit has a maximum of $100 per day for up to 3 days.

In addition to the cardholder, the cardholder’s spouse or domestic partner, as well as immediate family are covered.

To be eligible, the common carrier fare must have been purchased with the Southwest Priority card or with rewards earned from the card. A claim must be filed within 20 days of the loss.

Southwest passenger checking in bag

The Southwest Priority card includes lost luggage reimbursement coverage for both the cardholder and immediate family members. If a common carrier (airline, bus, train, or cruise ship) damages or loses checked or carry-on luggage, you’re eligible for up to $3,000 per passenger .

The common carrier fare must have been purchased with the Southwest Priority card or with rewards earned from the card to be eligible for coverage. A claim must be filed within 20 days of the loss.

Access to roadside assistance, including services like towing and tire changes, is available through the Southwest Priority card by calling 800-847-2869. However, the card’s benefit doesn’t cover the cost of the service call .

The purchase protection plan that comes with the Southwest Priority card offers coverage of up to $500 per claim ($50,000 maximum per account) when a new purchase is damaged or stolen within 120 days. This benefit applies to the cardmember and any recipients of gifts purchased by the cardmember. To be eligible, a claim needs to be submitted within 90 days of the loss or theft.

The extended warranty benefit extends a U.S. manufacturer’s warranty for an additional year when the original warranty is 3 years or less. This applies to purchases made by the cardholder using the Southwest Priority card. Each claim has a maximum benefit of $10,000 ($50,000 maximum per account).

The Southwest Priority card doesn’t have foreign transaction fees, so go ahead and bring it along on your next international trip!

Hot Tip: Did you know that Southwest Airlines flies to many surprising international destinations in the Caribbean and Central America?

You’ll have access to 24/7 fraud monitoring that protects you against unauthorized purchases.

Zero Liability Protection means you won’t be responsible for unauthorized purchases on your account. To report a fraudulent charge, just call the number on the back of your card.

You’ll have access to Rapid Rewards Access Events with your Southwest Priority card. This is a collection of exclusive events that you can purchase using Rapid Rewards points.

Access to Chase Offers comes with any Chase card including the Southwest Priority card. These are card-linked offers that can save money on your everyday purchases. Each offer needs to be added to the card prior to making a purchase.

These can sometimes even include offers for discounts on Southwest Airlines.

Chase Offers on Southwest credit card

There are 5 Southwest credit cards — 3 consumer cards and 2 business cards. The Southwest Priority card is the top-tier personal co-branded Southwest card, which offers a comprehensive suite of benefits. When deciding whether or not this card is worth it, keep in mind there are 2 benefits that add up to offer a higher value than the annual fee. The 7,500 annual bonus points and $75 annual Southwest travel credit have a value of $172.50 which is more than the $149 annual fee on this card. Those benefits alone make the Southwest Priority card a great one to keep in your wallet if you’re a fan of Southwest Airlines.

Southwest Airlines is a top choice among budget-conscious travelers, and we’re here to help you pick the best Southwest credit card for your lifestyle and flying habits.

The airline's unique blend of affordable pricing, straightforward rewards and a generous baggage policy makes it a hit among individuals, families, and business travelers. With more than 4,000 daily flights to 121 airports across 11 countries, there's a reasonable chance Southwest Airlines flies to your favorite destinations.

There are three co-branded personal Southwest credit cards and two Southwest business credit cards, all issued by Chase. The bank also offers general travel rewards cards that earn flexible rewards you can transfer at a 1:1 rate to Southwest Rapid Rewards®.

Best overall: Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card charges the highest annual fee among personal Southwest cards, but it also offers the best (and most valuable) benefits with the airline to more than offset the yearly cost for Southwest loyalists.

Why we like this card: If you frequently fly on Southwest Airlines, there's no better card than the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card to earn rewards and access benefits with the airline.

At first glance, the Southwest Priority earns the same bonus rates as the mid-tier Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card. But it's the Priority card's benefits that set it apart from other Southwest cards.

Cardholders receive a $75 Southwest® annual travel credit each year good towards eligible Southwest Airlines purchases using their card.

Because of Southwest's open seating policy, many travelers choose to purchase upgraded boarding, allowing them to board in positions A1-A15. The Premier card reimburses cardholders for the purchase of up to four upgraded boardings per anniversary year. Also, you'll receive 7,500 anniversary points each year.

Other airline-specific perks include 25% back on in-flight purchases and a boost of 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points annually (earning the Southwest Companion Pass requires 100 qualifying one-way flights or 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year).

That said, while there’s a lot to love about the Southwest Priority card, it comes with just a couple travel protections—lost luggage reimbursement and baggage delay insurance—a less robust list than one might expect from a card with a $149 annual fee.

Check out our full review of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card .

Best for occasional Southwest flyers: Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card

For casual travelers who fly Southwest up to a few times annually, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card offers moderate Southwest perks and high earning power with a reasonable $99 annual fee.

Why we like this card: Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card earns the same bonus rates as Southwest Priority but with a lower annual fee, which is easily covered through its benefits. It's a great option if Southwest is just one of the airlines you enjoy flying or you only book a few flights per year.

Cardholders receive 2 EarlyBird Check-In® each year, which automatically check you in for flights before the airline's 24-hour check-in period for an earlier boarding position. Also, every card anniversary, Southwest drops 6,000 points in your Rapid Rewards account.

And, for every $5,000 you spend using your Priority card, you'll earn 1,500 TQPs toward A-List status (A-List status requires 20 qualifying one-way flights or 35,000 tier qualifying points in a calendar year.) This status includes perks such as priority boarding, a dedicated lane at the Southwest check-in counter and a special A-List customer service phone line.

You also enjoy 25% back on in-flight purchases and a boost of 10,000 Companion Qualifying points per year.

Check out our full review of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card .

Best for a low annual fee: Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card offers entry-level airline perks and rewards with a $69 annual fee, the lowest among all Southwest credit cards.

Why we like this card: If you enjoy flying Southwest but don't want to pay an expensive annual fee, like those charged for Chase's higher tier Southwest cards, consider the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card.

The Southwest Plus offers a lower rewards rate on Southwest purchases and fewer benefits than the other personal Southwest credit cards, but there's still enough value to offset the smaller annual fee and warrant a look. As a cardholder, you receive 3,000 anniversary points each year. It still comes with 2 EarlyBird Check-In® each year, 25% back on in-flight purchases and a 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points boost annually.

However, if you travel internationally, beware this card’s 3% (of the amount of each transaction in U.S. dollars) foreign transaction fee—a particularly unfortunate fee for an airline card to levy.

Check out our full review of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card .

Best for flexible travel rewards: Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card earns flexible rewards good toward travel bookings through the issuer’s portal, cash back, and other redemptions—including transfers to Southwest Airlines and other airline and hotel partners.

Why we like this card: The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is a frequent flyer on "Best Of" lists and for good reason. While it's not the most luxurious travel rewards card, it offers an incredibly valuable blend of flexible rewards, card benefits and travel protections, all for a  $95 annual fee.

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you gain entry into Chase Ultimate Rewards®, the issuer's versatile rewards program. The card earns above-average rates in categories like travel, dining and streaming services. Points are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for cash back, but use your Sapphire Preferred redeem points for travel bookings through Chase Travel and you’ll get 25% more value per point.

Though the Sapphire Preferred doesn't come with any Southwest-specific benefits, you can transfer your points at a 1:1 rate to 14 airline and hotel partner programs, including Southwest Rapid Rewards.

This card also comes with a more robust list of travel protections than the co-branded Southwest cards do: trip cancellation and interruption insurance, baggage delay insurance, trip delay reimbursement, and primary rental car coverage.

Finally, cardholders can receive up to $50 in statement credits each anniversary year for hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel℠.

Check out our full review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card .

What is the Southwest Rapid Rewards® program?

Southwest Rapid Rewards is the airline's loyalty program. Through Rapid Rewards, you can earn points on qualifying flights and other select purchases. Rapid Rewards points are redeemable for flights, hotel stays, gift cards, merchandise experiences, events and statement credits to reimburse eligible expenses.

Rapid Rewards members receive benefits like no blackout dates and unlimited rewards seats. Points earned through the program don’t expire, so you can use them as they’re earned or save them up until the time is right for that big trip you’ve been looking forward to.

As a member, you can unlock additional airline perks through the program's two elite status tiers, which are A-List and A-List Preferred. Rapid Rewards status comes with benefits like priority boarding, free same-day standby and same-day changes, dedicated A-List member support and access to Priority Lanes and Express Lanes at the airport.

Southwest Companion Pass

The Southwest Companion Pass is arguably the most coveted companion pass offering available. With the companion pass, you can designate one person to fly with you free of charge when you purchase or redeem rewards for a flight (though you’ll still have to pay taxes and fees, which start at $5.60 one way).

Timing is everything with the Southwest Companion Pass. Once you earn the pass, it is good for the remainder of the current year plus the next full calendar year. Earning the pass as early in the year as possible gives you the highest potential value.

Southwest offers a few ways to earn a companion pass. The most challenging path to a companion pass is booking 100 qualifying one-way flights. Another option is to earn 135,000 qualifying Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year. Welcome bonuses count towards this total, making getting a new card and earning the bonus one of the quickest ways to qualify for a companion pass.

How to choose the best Southwest credit card

Finding the best Southwest card from the range of choices depends largely on your travel and spending habits. If you regularly fly Southwest and want access to the airline's best benefits, one of its top-tier cards makes the most sense. If not, the entry-level Rapid Rewards Plus card is probably a better choice. Southwest personal cards earn points in the same spending categories, though the Plus card has a less generous earning rate than its bigger siblings on Southwest purchases.

Another factor to consider is the card's annual fee. Paying an annual fee isn't a bad thing, especially if you can squeeze considerable value out of the card through rewards and benefits. Annual fees range from $69 to $149 for Southwest Airlines personal cards and $99 to $199 for Southwest Airlines business cards.

Alternatively, if you like flying Southwest but aren’t exclusively loyal to the airline, a travel card that lets you transfer points to Southwest may be the sweet spot for your travel habits. How to maximize the value of your Southwest credit card

Follow these tips to get the most out of your Southwest Airlines credit card.

  • Use your card for daily spending: Use your card for Southwest and other purchases to earn more Rapid Rewards points.
  • Earn the welcome bonus: The quickest way to boost your Southwest points balance is to plan ahead and ensure you can meet the spending requirement needed to earn your new card's welcome bonus.
  • Qualify for a companion pass: If you frequently travel with the same person, earning the Southwest Companion Pass is a great way to save money on flights.
  • Redeem your points for flights: Rapid Rewards points are redeemable in several ways, but award flights will almost always offer the most value.
  • Use your card benefits: Southwest cards offer incredible value through the card benefits included, but they are only valuable if you use them every year you own the card. For example, making an eligible Southwest purchase (such as a ticket) on your Priority card and triggering the $75 Southwest® annual travel credit each year effectively recoups half your annual fee in one fell swoop.

Frequently asked questions

Is a southwest credit card worth it.

Having a Southwest credit card is a great option if you regularly fly Southwest and the airline offers flights out of your home airport and to your preferred destinations. Each Southwest card offers enough value to offset its fee, provided you use it to earn rewards and take advantage of card benefits. If you don't fly Southwest, or typically don't fly when you travel, a different airline rewards card or a hotel card may be more useful to you.

Which banks issue Southwest credit cards?

Chase is the credit card issuer for all Southwest co-branded credit cards. It's also the primary issuer with cards that earn rewards that transfer to Southwest Rapid Rewards, thanks to its famous Sapphire family of travel rewards cards. (Points can also be transferred from a Marriott credit card to Southwest Rapid Rewards, and some Marriott cards are Chase-issued while others are by American Express.)

How do you transfer Chase points to Southwest Rapid Rewards?

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Southwest and other travel partners through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. Navigate to the "Transfer to Travel Partners" section within your online account, select Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards from the list of travel partners, enter the number of points you want to transfer in increments of 1,000 and complete the transfer.

Does my Southwest credit card pay for Global Entry?

Not if you have one of the personal Southwest cards. The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card is the only Southwest credit card that offers an application fee credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS. The benefit reimburses cardholders up to $100 every four years for application fees for one of these three trusted traveler programs.

Can you have multiple Southwest credit cards?

You could technically have all five Southwest co-branded credit cards, but it doesn't necessarily make sense to have that many, especially if you lose out on welcome bonuses. Southwest bonus guidelines for personal cards state that "this product is available to you if you do not have a current Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card and have not received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months."

You're also subject to Chase's 5/24 rule—an unwritten by widely known rule which essentially boils down to the fact that Chase will reject your application for one of their cards if you have opened five or more credit cards from any issuer in the past 24 months.

Having one personal and one business Southwest card could make sense if you want more than one Southwest card and you operate a small business of some kind.

Does Southwest offer free checked bags?

Yes. Whereas many other airlines will charge you to check a bag, unless you have a co-branded card that specifically offers a free checked bag as a benefit, Southwest offers travelers two free checked bags—provided your bags don’t exceed the weight and size limits.

Please note that card details are accurate as of the publish date, but are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the issuer. Please contact the card issuer to verify rates, fees, and benefits before applying.

If you're going to travel on Southwest Airlines, it pays to have one of the airline's credit cards. Cardholders automatically earn extra points on Southwest purchases, not to mention a bonus each year the card is renewed, amid myriad other benefits. So how does a Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card work? Here, we'll go over how many points you can earn with it and the perks you'll receive as a cardholder.

How travel credit cards generally work

Travel credit cards are a way for cardholders to earn points or miles that can be redeemed later for free flights, hotel stays and other services or items. Specifically, co-branded airline credit cards , like the Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards, offer bonus points on airline purchases (and sometimes other categories) so that members can earn rewards more quickly.

Similar cards exist for hotel frequenters , too, but for the purposes of this explanation, we'll stick to airline cards.

Many airline cards include automatic benefits just for being a cardholder, like access to upgraded boarding passes each year. Other cards may offer additional perks, such as elite status credits or lounge access.

The points that you earn from the credit card are fed to your airline loyalty program account after the statement closes each month. Once the points have been posted, they are yours to redeem. This type of credit card thus makes it faster to accrue enough points for an almost-free award flight. These points are earned on top of the points accrued by flying with the airline.

Southwest credit cards

Southwest Airlines offers several credit card options based on your budget and the perks that are most appealing to you. In addition to consumer credit cards, they offer business versions for entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

These are the five Southwest credit cards that are currently available, along with their annual fee:

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card : $69 .

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card : $99 .

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card : $149 .

Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card : $99 .

Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card : $199 .

Three of the cards are for personal accounts, and two are set up for businesses. You can have two Southwest credit cards if you apply for one personal card and one business card. Just keep in mind the Chase 5/24 rule .

Sign-up bonuses for these cards typically range from 40,000 points to 70,000 points, but the airline is currently running a special bonus for all three personal cards: Earn 50,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

One major perk of having a Southwest card is the leg up it gives you in getting a Companion Pass (when it's not already part of the sign-up bonus), which can be earned after accumulating 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year.

Figuring out which Southwest Airlines credit card to get will ultimately come down to your budget and preferred benefits. For instance, if you want access to a $75-per-year Southwest travel credit, then you'll need to sign up for the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card . This perk alone essentially slashes the card's annual fee in half.

How points work with a Southwest credit card

Earning rapid rewards points.

As a cardholder, how many points earned per dollar with the Southwest credit card depends on which card you have and where you're making a purchase. In most cases, you'll earn the most points when making purchases with Southwest or its hotel and rental car partners.

This chart shows how many points you'll earn with Southwest, on bonus categories and on other credit card purchases.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points

Once you've earned Southwest points from your credit card and they're deposited into your Rapid Rewards account, they never expire.

Most travelers redeem points for flights on Southwest Airlines. According to NerdWallet’s analysis, Southwest points are worth about 1.5 cents each on average. So to book a $120 flight, you can expect to pay about 8,500 Rapid Rewards points.

» Learn more: How to redeem Rapid Rewards points

You can also redeem points for merchandise, international flights operated by other airlines, hotel stays, gift cards and rental cars. However, Rapid Rewards points can't be redeemed for other Southwest charges, like pets, extra bags, unaccompanied minors, security fees or drinks.

Redeeming points for a flight is simple. Go to Southwest.com and enter details for your flight search as normal. Then, click the "Points" option before clicking "Search."

Other perks of holding a Southwest credit card

Earning Southwest Rapid Rewards points on your purchases isn't the only benefit that you'll receive from being a cardholder. Card benefits vary depending on which Southwest credit card you have, but here are some additional perks you could get with your Southwest card:

Anniversary bonus points. When you renew your card and pay the annual fee, you'll receive 3,000 to 9,000 bonus points every year, depending on the card.

Discount on in-flight purchases. Receive a statement credit of 25% for your in-flight drink and Wi-Fi purchases.

EarlyBird Check-In. Get up to two EarlyBird Check-Ins each year to snag an earlier boarding number at check-in. Without this benefit, EarlyBird Check-In costs $15 to $25 per person each flight.

Upgraded boardings. Upgrade your boarding pass up to four times each year to A1 to A15, depending on availability. These upgrades normally cost $30 to $80 each and can be completed online via Southwest's upgraded boarding page .

Annual travel credit. Get an annual travel credit of up to $75 toward your Southwest purchases.

In-flight Wi-Fi credits. Enjoy up to 365 in-flight credits of $8 each when you purchase Wi-Fi during your Southwest flights.

TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit . Get reimbursed up to $100 every four years when you pay for the application fees with your Southwest credit card.

Tier Qualifying Points. For every $10,000 you spend each year, you'll earn 1,500 TQPs toward A-List and A-List Preferred status. The spend requirement on this benefit will drop to $5,000 beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

Companion Pass. Welcome bonuses and points earned from credit card purchases count toward the Southwest Companion Pass . The Companion Pass allows a designated companion to fly for just the cost of taxes and fees on any flight you take with Southwest.

No foreign transaction fees. Avoid foreign transaction fees of up to 3 percent when making purchases outside of the U.S.

Can you use a Southwest card anywhere?

Yes. Visa cards are accepted everywhere that credit cards can be used to pay the bill. Aside from the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card , Southwest credit cards are good for international travel as well because they don't charge foreign transaction fees.

Is a Southwest credit card right for you?

For people whose preferred airline is Southwest, having a Southwest credit card makes sense. You'll earn points on everyday purchases, plus additional points when paying for Southwest flights, hotel and rental car partner reservations, local transit and commuting, and other bonus category purchases.

With Rapid Rewards points valued at 1.5 cents each, the anniversary bonus can offset a majority of the annual fee on any Southwest card. For example, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card has a 7,500-point anniversary bonus, which is worth $105. Combine that with the card’s annual $75 Southwest travel credit, and you’ve already compensated for the $149 annual fee. What's more, the card's other benefits add value that frequent travelers will appreciate.

If you're considering a Southwest credit card

Now that you know how Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards work, consider whether it makes sense to add a credit card from this airline to your wallet.

As you evaluate the options, think about how you plan to use your card. For instance, while the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card has the lowest annual fee, it doesn't offer the same level of benefits as the other personal cards.

For travelers who spend at least $150 flying with Southwest a year, the best option is the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card . With the anniversary bonus and $75 annual flight credit, the benefits outweigh the annual fee. Plus, it earns 50% more points on Southwest purchases than the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card , includes four upgraded boardings each year and has no foreign transaction fees.

The best business credit cards with no foreign transaction fees

Liz Hund

Editor's Note

It pays to know the rules about foreign transaction fees before booking a trip abroad.

The nuisance of foreign transaction fees is increasingly rare on many of today's best business credit cards . However, a few big-name cards still charge an up to 3% fee for any purchase you make in a foreign country. You'll get hit with the fee even if a merchant uses a foreign credit card processor.

You get nothing in exchange, which means there's no benefit from paying this fee. Instead, use a card free of foreign transaction fees when traveling internationally or buying something online that could be run through an outside card processor.

You should have some personal cards that don't charge foreign transaction fees , but if international business travel is on your horizon, make sure you also carry at least one business credit card that won't erase all your reward earnings with a needless fee.

Here are some of the best business cards that don't charge foreign transaction fees.

$75 Southwest ® Annual Travel Credit: A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards ® Priority Card is used for Southwest Airlines ® purchases (excluding Upgraded Boardings and inflight purchases), up to an anniversary year maximum accumulation of $75. Anniversary year means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account open date anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. Eligibility for a $75 Southwest Annual Travel Credit for accounts that switch to this product: Account open date is the date the switch is official in the Chase system. Statement credit(s) will post to your account the same day your Southwest Airlines purchase posts to your account and will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles. The $75 Southwest Annual Travel Credit will be issued for the year in which the transaction posts to your account. For example, if you buy a Southwest Airlines ticket, but the airline does not post the transaction until after your current anniversary period ends, the cost of the ticket will be allocated towards the following year’s Southwest Annual Travel Credit maximum of $75.

Southwest ® Upgraded Boardings: Each anniversary year you will be reimbursed for the purchase of up to 4 Upgraded Boardings which are positions A1-A15. Upgraded Boarding may be purchased via the Southwest app or opens overlay Southwest.com beginning 24 hours before departure and ending 30 minutes prior to departure or at the departure gate or ticket counter on the day of travel only, when available. Price of Upgraded Boarding is based on your itinerary. Anniversary year means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account open date anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. For accounts that switch to this product, account open date is the date the switch is official in the Chase system. After you make your purchase with your Southwest Rapid Rewards ® Priority Card, you will receive a statement credit for the price of the Upgraded Boarding. Statement credit and purchase of Upgraded Boarding may not post on the same statement; please allow up to eight weeks for the statement credit(s) to post to your account. You may purchase all 4 Upgraded Boardings at one time or on separate flights; you will only be reimbursed via statement credit for the first 4 Upgraded Boardings you purchase during your anniversary year. Account must be open and not in default at the time the statement credit is posted to your account.

Only points posted on your billing statements and posted to your Rapid Rewards account during the same calendar year are available for qualification for Companion Pass status. For example, if you make a purchase after your December billing statement cycle date, the points on those purchases will not count toward Companion Pass status in the year the purchase was made; they will appear on your January billing statement and post to your Rapid Rewards account in January. Companion Pass Qualifying Points Boost: As a Southwest Rapid Rewards Cardmember, you will earn one boost of 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points each calendar year. The boost will be deposited into your eligible Rapid Rewards account by January 31st each calendar year or up to 30 days after account opening. TQPs earned during a billing cycle on a Southwest Rapid Rewards ® Priority Credit Card from Chase are not available for qualification for benefits such as A-List and A-List Preferred status until they are posted to your Rapid Rewards ® account. The following will not count toward qualification for A-List or A-List Preferred status: Rapid Rewards program enrollment points; Rapid Rewards reward flights; Rapid Rewards Companion Pass ® travel; Rapid Rewards partner points except for TQPs earned on the Southwest Rapid Rewards ® Priority Credit Card from Chase; Rapid Rewards bonus points, unless specifically designated as such; non-revenue travel, unless specifically designated as eligible; stops at intermediate cities on connecting or through flights; and charter flights. TQPs are not redeemable for travel on Southwest ® or through the “More Rewards” site.

How you can earn points: You’ll earn points on purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds, made with a Rapid Rewards ® Credit Card by you or an authorized user of the account. Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions won’t count as a purchase and won’t earn points: balance transfers, cash advances and other cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable. 3 points: You’ll earn 3 points for each $1 spent on purchases made directly with Southwest Airlines ® , including flight, inflight, Southwest ® gift card, and Southwest Vacations ® package purchases. 2 points: You’ll earn 2 points for each $1 spent on purchases at participating Rapid Rewards ® hotel and rental car partners. 2 points: You’ll earn 2 points for each $1 spent on purchases in the local transit and commuting rewards category. 2 points: You’ll earn 2 points for each $1 spent on purchases in the following rewards categories: internet, cable, and phone services; select streaming services. 1 point: You’ll earn 1 point for each $1 spent on all other purchases. 7,500 bonus points each account anniversary year: You’ll receive 7,500 bonus points each account anniversary year. “Account anniversary year” means the year beginning with your account open date through the anniversary of your account open date, and each 12 months after that. 1,500 tier qualifying points: You’ll earn 1,500 tier qualifying points (TQPs) for each $5,000 spent in purchases annually. TQPs can be used to count toward qualification for Rapid Rewards A-List or A-List Preferred status. “Annually” means the year beginning with your account open date through the first December statement date of that same year, and each 12 billing cycles starting after your December statement date through the following December statement date. Information about earning/transferring points to Southwest Airlines ® : Points earned during a billing cycle will be automatically transferred to Southwest Airlines after the end of each billing cycle. Losing points: You’ll immediately lose all points that haven’t been transferred to Southwest Airlines if your card account status changes, or your card account is closed for program misuse, fraudulent activities, failure to pay, bankruptcy, or other reasons described in the terms of the Rewards Program Agreement. Rewards Categories: Merchants who accept Visa/Mastercard credit cards are assigned a merchant code, which is determined by the merchant or its processor in accordance with Visa/Mastercard procedures based on the kinds of products and services they primarily sell. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers to you. Please note: We make every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in our rewards categories. However, even though a merchant or some of the items that it sells may appear to fit within a rewards category, the merchant may not have a merchant code in that category. When this occurs, purchases with that merchant won’t qualify for rewards offers on purchases in that category. Purchases submitted by you, an authorized user, or the merchant through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, online or mobile digital wallets, or similar technology will not qualify in a rewards category if the technology is not set up to process the purchase in that rewards category. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see opens in a new window chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQs .

For both the same-day change and same-day standby benefits, you must change your flight or request to be added to the same-day standby list at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of your original flight or the no-show policy will apply.
