How to get travel insurance for your journey

To activate and have cover under this policy, you must purchase at least 50% of your pre-paid travel expenses for your journey on your TSB Platinum Mastercard. At the time of purchase, your TSB Platinum Mastercard must be current for the entire period of insurance.

Your pre-paid travel expenses include, but are not limited to air tickets, other transport tickets, accommodation, car rental, pre-paid tours, cruises, taxes and any other pre-paid travel costs which you purchased prior to the start date of your journey (as shown on your itinerary).

If you have no pre-paid travel expenses such as airfares or accommodation because the trip was gifted, won or purchased for you, and provided that your trip is not a business trip paid for by your employer or business, cover under this policy is still available to you. At the time your trip is booked, your TSB Platinum Mastercard must be current for the entire period of insurance. Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded under this policy. You can apply to add cover for one or more pre-existing medical conditions by calling Allianz Partners on 0800 800 357 between 8:30am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday (except public holidays). If your application is approved, an additional premium will apply.

What does a pre-existing medical condition mean?

A pre-existing medical condition means:

a) Any physical defect, infirmity, existing or recurring illness, injury, disability or mental illness of which you, or the person due to whom you are claiming, are aware of. b) Any medical condition for which you, or the person due to whom you are claiming have had or received a medical examination, consultation, treatment, investigation and/or medication in the 12 months prior to the date you activated your cover under this policy.

Cover over 75 years of age

There are some exceptions to the cover available for cardholders aged 75 or over . If you’re nearing or already 75 years of age, make sure to check the TSB Credit Mastercard Insurance Terms and Conditions so you’re aware of what you might be covered for and what else you may need to do.

Is there a maximum age limit on the Travel Insurance?

If you are aged 75 or above at the start date of your period of insurance for any journey under this insurance policy, you do not have automatic cover under:

a) ‘Section 2: Medical benefits’; and b) ‘Section 1: Cancellation and travel disruption benefits’ for any claims arising directly or indirectly from your medical condition(s) or signs or symptom, regardless of whether or not they are a pre-existing medical condition.

This applies to both international and domestic journeys.

Your period of insurance is the date we start to cover you prior to your journey commencing to the date you return to your home (as shown on your travel itinerary) directly following your journey.

Please read the definitions section in the policy wording for full definitions. For further information and support call Allianz Partners on 0800 800 357 to speak with someone.

What if I’m over 75 and still need cover?

During the medical assessment, Allianz Partners will ask you about your medical history and your pre-existing medical conditions.

If Allianz Partners approve your application for cover under Section 2: Medical benefits, you will be required to pay a premium, and written confirmation of your cover will be forwarded to you by Allianz Partners. Cover will not be in place until you pay any applicable premium and Allianz Partners inform you in writing.

To complete your medical assessment, please contact Allianz Partners Customer Care Medical Assessments Team on 0800 800 357 .

What if I book my travel before I turn 75?

If you book your journey prior to turning 75 and the start date of your journey is less than 12 months from the date you purchase your trip, and you meet the eligibility criteria, you will still receive coverage.

Will I pay a full annual fee if I’m over 75?

Because some sections of the cover will no longer be automatic, once the primary cardholder turns 75 we’ll waive the $90 Platinum Mastercard annual fee. We’ll also waive the fees for any additional cards that you may have.

Am I covered if I test positive for Covid-19 in my destination country and I need medical care?

Yes, providing that you did not commence your travel against the New Zealand Government’s advice, or against local government advice at your overseas destination.

Am I covered if I test positive for Covid-19 in my destination country and I am required to isolate under the current local destination Covid-19 isolation rules, and I cannot complete my travel?

Cover is available, providing that you can supply as evidence a dated supervised RAT/ PCR test or a medical certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner detailing a Covid-19 positive result and the local authority isolation rules.

There is no cover for claims arising from any lockdowns, changes in government alert levels, quarantine or mandatory isolation that applies generally or broadly to some or all of a population, vessel or geographical area, or that applies based on where you are travelling to, from, or through.

What if there are no isolation requirements in my destination country, but I have Covid-19 and I am too unwell to travel?

Cover is available, providing that you can supply as evidence a medical certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner stating that you are unfit to travel.

Warning: There's a large gap in pandemic era travel insurance

Katie Genter

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

I'm planning a lot of trips right now. But, I'm uncertain when and how some countries will reopen their borders to tourists. Even though I'll be fully vaccinated soon, I still may want to avoid pandemic hotspots.

As such, I'm only booking travel that is fully refundable or changeable . Specifically, I'm redeeming hotel points for stays and taking note of the date by which I must cancel to get my points back. When it comes to airfare, I'm booking award flights with programs that offer changes or cancellations with minimal fees.

But perhaps you want to book (or have already booked) a nonrefundable trip . In this case, you may wonder whether travel insurance will cover you if you need to cancel, reroute or postpone your trip. Unfortunately, travel insurance only covers trip cancellation or interruption for specific reasons and situations. And most travel insurance doesn't cover the primary reasons I'd want to cancel or interrupt trips in the COVID-19 era.

In this guide, I'll discuss what you need to know about trip cancellation and interruption travel insurance when traveling during the coronavirus pandemic.

What is trip cancellation and interruption insurance?

tsb platinum travel insurance covid 19

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance may provide reimbursement up to a specified amount per person per trip for eligible travel expenses or arrangements that must be canceled or interrupted. However, policies vary on the definition of eligible reasons for canceling or postponing a trip and the types of expenses reimbursed. And most policies will only provide coverage for set reasons.

Most trip insurance policies won't cover many of the reasons you might want or need to cancel or interrupt a trip during the coronavirus pandemic. In particular, most policies won't cover cancellation or interruption even if you can't travel due to border closures or specific entry requirements. Likewise, most policies won't cover cancellation or interruption if you choose not to travel -- even if your reason for not wanting to travel is primarily due to a CDC travel warning , elevated COVID-19 cases or specific entry requirements (such as a lengthy mandatory quarantine or PCR testing ).

However, some policies do cover cancellation or interruption if you are quarantined by a physician for health reasons or contract COVID-19 . In the following section, I'll take a closer look at some of the most popular policies.

Popular trip cancellation and interruption policies

There are two primary ways to obtain trip cancellation and interruption insurance:

  • As a benefit provided by your credit card when you charge eligible travel expenses to the card
  • As a benefit of purchased independent travel insurance

I'll discuss some of the most popular travel insurance policies and the coverage each may provide for coronavirus-related cancellation or interruption in the following sections.

Chase credit cards

tsb platinum travel insurance covid 19

Various Chase credit cards offer trip cancellation and interruption protection, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. To get coverage on these cards, you must charge all or a portion of the trip to your credit card account and/or the rewards program associated with the account.

The trip cancellation and trip interruption benefit offered by these cards may provide reimbursement for eligible travel expenses charged to your account up to $10,000 per covered person and up to $20,000 per trip. However, only select losses that result in cancellation or interruption of a trip are eligible for coverage.

In particular, the primary pandemic-related reasons Chase trip insurance may cover your trip cancellation or interruption are:

  • Accidental bodily injury, loss of life or sickness experienced by you or your traveling companion which prevents you or your traveling companion from traveling on the trip
  • Quarantine (due to health reasons) of you or your traveling companion imposed by a physician or by a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction

However, the insurance offered by these two cards explicitly excludes trip cancellation or interruption for the following reasons:

  • A pre-existing condition or any other event that occurs or commences before the initial deposit date or booking date of the trip
  • Your disinclination to travel due to an epidemic or pandemic

So, you definitely won't be covered by Chase credit cards if you decide not to travel because of an epidemic or pandemic. And even if you contract COVID-19 or need to enter quarantine, your Chase card's insurance may not cover you if the insurance administrator considers the coronavirus pandemic (and not your sickness or quarantine) as the event that caused your trip cancellation or interruption. After all, some travel insurance excludes trips booked after the coronavirus pandemic became a known event.

It's undoubtedly worth filing a Chase trip cancellation claim if you contract COVID-19 or a physician or government authority requires you to quarantine (and either of these events prevents you from traveling on a trip). But, I wouldn't assume I'd get any coronavirus-related trip cancellation and interruption insurance when booking new trips with my Chase cards.

You can review the Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits guide and the Chase Sapphire Preferred's benefits guide . If you want more information about these cards, check out the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card review and the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card review .

American Express cards

tsb platinum travel insurance covid 19

Select American Express cards , including The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, offer trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance of up to $10,000 per covered trip and $20,000 per eligible card per 12-consecutive-month period.

To be covered, you must charge the full amount of your round-trip travel on a common carrier to your card. However, you can pay with a combination of your card and accumulated points on your card. And you can also pay with a combination of your card and redeemable certificates, vouchers, coupons or discounts awarded from a frequent-flyer program or similar program.

Amex's guide to benefits provides the following definitions of trip cancellation and trip interruption:

Trip cancellation means the cancellation of travel arrangements when the eligible traveler is prevented from traveling on a common carrier for a covered trip on or before the departure of the covered trip. Trip interruption means the interruption of the covered trip either on the way to the point of departure or after departure of the covered trip.

However, Amex's trip cancellation and interruption insurance only covers specific cancellation or interruption reasons. So, as is noted in Amex's trip cancellation insurance COVID-19 notice , you'll likely only get coverage in connection with COVID-19 if you contract COVID-19 or a physician requires you to quarantine for health reasons related to COVID-19 on or before the departure of your trip. Any other reason for trip cancellation or interruption in connection with COVID-19 likely ineligible for coverage.

You can see the complete benefits guides for Amex's travel insurance coverage on Amex's retail and travel benefits website .

Purchased travel insurance

tsb platinum travel insurance covid 19

Many of the most popular travel insurance providers have published coverage alerts and frequently asked questions pages that provide information about COVID-19 claims. So, if you have travel insurance with a specific provider or are looking to buy travel insurance with a particular provider, you should read any information that the provider has about the coronavirus pandemic and understand how that affects your insurance.

Of course, most independent travel insurance covers more than just trip cancellation and interruption. But, in this section, I'll focus on trip cancellation and interruption. I particularly took a closer look at the information AIG Travel Guard , Allianz Travel Insurance , Seven Corners and World Nomads have posted online about coronavirus-related claims. Here's what I found by looking at this information:

  • AIG Travel Guard : Policies purchased on or after March 11, 2020 don't cover any losses due to COVID-19 quarantine. However, suppose you contract COVID-19 before departure. In that case, you may be eligible for trip cancellation benefits (if you have a confirmed and documented diagnosis and are medically unable to travel at the time of departure due to COVID-19). Likewise, if you contract COVID-19 while traveling and have a confirmed and documented diagnosis, you may be eligible for trip interruption benefits.
  • Allianz Travel Insurance : Plans typically exclude losses for epidemics, including COVID-19. However, you can buy new plans with an epidemic coverage endorsement. And, for a limited time, Allianz is accommodating claims for trip cancellation and trip interruption if you of your traveling companion or family member becomes ill with COVID-19 either before or during your trip.
  • Seven Corners : COVID-19 is treated similarly to other sicknesses. So, you may be eligible for trip interruption coverage if a legally qualified physician determines that you or your traveling companion must interrupt the trip due to sickness. Likewise, you may be eligible for trip interruption or cancellation coverage if you or a traveling companion would be forced into mandatory quarantine for medical isolation by a physician or government (excluding at your return destination city or in any other place following the end of your trip).
  • World Nomads : Policies purchased by U.S. residents may provide coverage for trip interruption if you contract COVID-19 while traveling. You may also be eligible for trip cancellation coverage for pre-paid non-refundable travel expenses if your doctor advises you that you are unfit to travel on your scheduled departure date due to being diagnosed with COVID-19.

None of the policies provide reimbursement if you decide not to travel, even if your reason is because of an epidemic at your destination. And, although Seven Corners may allow you to cancel or interrupt a trip due to mandatory quarantine for medical isolation at your destination, your inability to enter a country or state isn't an eligible reason for trip cancellation or interruption.

However, some providers offer "cancel for any reason" trip insurance . If you purchase this type of policy, you can cancel your trip for any reason -- including deciding not to travel because of an epidemic -- and get back some of the prepaid, forfeited, nonrefundable payments or deposits for your trip. If you're booking nonrefundable travel that you aren't sure you'll be able to take, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason insurance.

My travel insurance doesn't cover me, what now?

As you can see, most travel insurance policies won't cover you if you decide not to travel due to pandemic hot spots or mandatory quarantine or can't travel due to border closures or restrictions. So, if your travel insurance won't cover you, here are some other ideas to consider.

Call the airline or travel provider

If your travel insurance doesn't cover your canceled or interrupted trip, contact your airline and other travel providers. After all, the airline may have travel waivers that allow you to cancel, delay or change your flights with waived fees -- and sometimes with any fare difference waived as well.

Even if the airline doesn't have a travel waiver in place, you may find an agent who is willing to waive fees -- especially if you have elite status with the airline. But, you may need to wait until closer to your travel dates before the airline offers any waivers or alternate options.

Visit a second destination

Suppose the airline won't offer any solutions, but you don't feel comfortable visiting your original destination. In that case, you could book a second round-trip to a different destination and nest it within your original trip. Of course, you'll want to allow enough buffer between your tickets to reduce the chance that you'll misconnect in either direction.

You may also want to ask the airline how much it would cost to add another leg or two to your original ticket, as then you'd be considered a transit passenger at your original destination. And, as a transit passenger, you may be able to avoid entry restrictions at your original destination.

Consider the risk

If you can visit your destination, you may want to take an unemotional, logical look at your trip and the risks you're likely to face. Determine your risk based on your destination, activities at your destination, immunity , age, potential repercussions of becoming ill and possible consequences of testing positive during your trip . Some travelers are specifically avoiding international travel as long as the U.S. requires testing before return , as they don't want to risk needing to quarantine outside the U.S.

Related: Do kids need to get the COVID-19 vaccine before traveling?

Forfeit the trip

If you've run out of options and still don't want to travel, you can try to recoup as much of your costs as possible. For example, you may be able to retain some value by canceling, paying a change or award redeposit fee. But you may lose nonrefundable costs.

Related: How to refund a nonrefundable airline ticket

Bottom line

Travel insurance can be helpful. But don't expect much coverage from trip cancellation and interruption insurance if you want to cancel or interrupt your trip for most pandemic-related reasons.

Sure, many insurance policies will provide benefits if you contract COVID-19 or are mandated to quarantine for medical isolation. But, you won't get assistance if you can't travel or don't want to travel due to more common reasons such as entry requirements, quarantine requirements or pandemic hot spots. As such, for the foreseeable future, I recommend booking fully refundable travel or purchasing cancel for any reason travel insurance if you aren't sure you'll take a trip.

Should you get travel insurance for vacations during COVID-19? Here's what to consider.

Someday in the not-too-distant future, you’ll once again be able to make your family vacation ideas a reality and head out to the best family vacation spots in the U.S. –maybe even to Europe , Asia or the Caribbean. And once you make the decision to travel again, you should pay special attention to your COVID-19 travel insurance options.

Even before COVID-19 added new risks to travel plans, it would have been wise to consider four main financial risks that family travel insurance can help you avoid:

  • Loss of nonrefundable prepayments or cancellation penalties if you, another member of your family travel group – or a close family member remaining at home – encounters unexpected sickness or accident. This risk is covered by trip-cancellation insurance (TCI).
  • Extra expenses of an early return if you have to curtail a trip you’ve already started for one of the same reasons you might cancel (trip interruption insurance, or TII). Travel insurance policies almost always combine TCI and TII.
  • Expenses for medical treatment or emergency evacuation if you become sick or suffer an accident in a destination where your regular health insurance doesn’t provide full coverage.
  • Expenses of unforeseen delays at any time during your trip.

But COVID-19 has changed the ground rules. Travel insurance designed for normal times may not cover all your family’s risks in this pandemic.

Travel insurance and COVID-19: What you need to know

Almost all family travel insurance provides financial coverage only for unforeseen risks. These days, COVID-19 is a foreseeable risk just about anywhere. Also, most travel insurance is “named peril” insurance: If a contingency is not specifically included in the fine print as a “covered reason,” the policy doesn’t cover it.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

COVID-19 also poses three unique risks that are covered by some policies, but not all.

  • Catching COVID-19 at your destination. Standard travel medical policies cover medical costs of getting sick at your destination, but some insurers can deny coverage because contracting COVID-19 is not an unforeseen risk. At least one new policy, from Seven Corners, explicitly lists “catching COVID-19” as a covered reason, and some other policies are also specifically covering it. But it would be a mistake to assume it is a covered risk.
  • Getting quarantined at your destination. An unexpected extension of your trip can pose a big financial burden. Some TII policies include “quarantine” as a covered reason; others do not.
  • Canceling a trip because of a surge of coronavirus cases at your destination. Many policies don’t cover destination epidemics/pandemics at all as a covered reason to cancel. Some don’t even cover prepaid arrangements when your airline, hotel or cruise line cancels before you do. “Cancel for any reason” policies , typically available as extra-cost options, let you, rather than an insurance company bean-counter, decide whether you want to continue or cancel a trip. But those policies generally recover no more than 50% to 75% of your prepayments.

COVID-19 travel insurance coverage: Read the fine print

A basic problem with COVID-19 risks is that some insurance fine print hasn’t caught up with the coronavirus, so you can’t rely on an online comparison table to give you the answers.

Instead, this is one of those times when you need to buy your insurance through a specialized travel insurance agency and to go over exactly what you need with a qualified agent. Quotewright.com , Squaremouth.com , InsureMyTrip.com , G1G , Global Travel Insurance  and TravelersMed.com would be appropriate in this case.

Bottom line: If you’re planning a trip in the pandemic era and you can’t afford to risk your entire vacation budget in the event of an unexpected emergency, you’ll want to consider travel insurance. But not just any off-the-shelf travel insurance. Work with a qualified agent at a specialized insurance company to the exact level of coverage you need.

You can finally get COVID-19 travel insurance (but what does it actually cover?)

tsb platinum travel insurance covid 19

We took a closer look at two travel insurance policies which offer COVID-19 cover, so you know what you're getting for your money.

Travel insurance which includes cover for COVID-19? Sounds great. But what's the catch?

Well, it turns out there are actually some pretty valuable benefits on offer. But, as with any insurance policy, there are things to watch out for too.

Firstly, there are only a few brands offering cover for coronavirus-related claims, so you have limited choice when it comes to providers.

Cover-More and Travel Insurance Direct (TID) are among the brands that have created cover for COVID-19. To find out what you really get for your money, we took a closer look at the benefits offered by both.

Importantly, the policies are affordably priced. For a week-long trip within Australia, we were quoted $66 from Cover-More and $61 from TID. That's for a 30-year-old traveller with no pre-existing medical conditions.

With both, you can expect cancellation costs to be covered if you contract COVID-19 or if your annual leave is revoked due to COVID-19 - although that's only for certain essential workers.

You can also expect to have quarantine costs covered in certain circumstances, as well as cancellation costs if your accommodation closes due to a confirmed case on-site.

However, while Cover-More and TID offer some valuable COVID-19 cover, they don't cover everything. For example, you're unlikely to be covered if you can no longer fly due to border closures or if your accommodation closes preemptively.

Here's a more comprehensive breakdown of the product disclosure statements, so you can get a better idea of what you're really covered for:

Cover-More - Find out more

Only policies taken from December 9 onwards include some cover for COVID-19. Here are some examples of what's included and what to watch out for:

Travel Insurance Direct (TID) - Find out more

TID's domestic policies cover costs associated with eight specific events related to COVID-19.

  • If you have to cancel because you or a travelling companion are diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • If a close relative or business partner in Australia is hospitalised or dies due to COVID-19 and you can no longer go.
  • If you or a member of your party are permanently employed as a healthcare worker, residential care worker or law enforcement officer, and your or their pre-approved leave is cancelled due to coronavirus.
  • If you're unable to stay at your pre-booked accommodation due to it being closed for cleaning following a confirmed case of COVID-19 on the premises.
  • If you're denied boarding on your scheduled pre-paid public transport due to you being suspected of being infected.
  • If you or a member of your travelling party are confined to compulsory quarantine during your trip as a result of contracting COVID-19 or being a close contact.
  • If you're diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip and are unable to care for your dependent children, childcare services are covered.
  • If you're diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip, necessary pet care services are covered.

Travel lets you see new places, meet new people, and experience different cultures. But the lurking shadow of COVID-19 can make traveling uncertain. Almost half of canceled trips in 2020 were due to the virus, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association (UStiA). [1]

Travel insurance can help if something goes wrong before or during your trip, but not all policies cover COVID-19 issues. Let’s explore how COVID-19 travel insurance works and how it might — or might not — shield you on your next journey.

How pandemic travel insurance works

Most travel insurance policies include protections for trip cancellations, delays, or other trip interruption coverage. However, many policies don’t cover disruptions due to pandemics. [2] That’s where COVID travel insurance comes into play.

COVID travel insurance is a specialized policy that can refund your money if the virus throws a wrench into your plans. It typically has three coverage levels: coverage for a trip delay, canceling for any reason, and medical care if you get sick.

Travel delay coverage

Illness, injury, jury duty, and other circumstances beyond your control can delay your travel plans. Travel delay insurance covers flight issues, bad weather, sudden breakdowns, and unexpected illnesses or injuries that happen before reaching your destination. It can pay you back for non-refundable expenses and cover extra costs, too — like food, hotel rooms, or cab rides.

Cancel for any reason

Travel insurance policies typically have strict rules, but a cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) option offers more leeway, allowing you to cancel for reasons not covered in the original policy.

But with CFAR benefits, you might only get a partial refund amount. Reimbursements usually range from 50% to 75% of the total price. [2]

Medical coverage for COVID-19

If your health insurance is only valid in a specific area and doesn’t cover international travel, travel insurance with medical expenses coverage can fill the gap.

If medical insurance is included in your trip policy, it can help pay for medical attention and treatment costs if you, a family member, or another traveling companion becomes ill from COVID-19 before or during your trip.

Will travel insurance cover you if you need to quarantine?

Some travel protection plans cover quarantine or self-isolation due to COVID-19 concerns. It can reimburse you for lost prepaid expenses and cover additional lodging and meal costs. However, it depends on your policy and the conditions leading to the cancellation, delay, or disruption.

Protection often hinges on two factors:

Not all travel insurance plans include a pandemic as a covered reason. If COVID-19 was a significant public concern when you purchased the policy, insurers may not provide coverage because it’s a “foreseeable” threat. But some plans let you add COVID-19 coverage as an endorsement.

Even if you set out to buy COVID-19 travel insurance, it may not be available for your plan or location. Review your benefits and endorsement options to look for “pandemic” or “epidemic-related” language to see if COVID-19 is a covered event.

Is travel insurance worth it?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared the COVID-19 public health emergency over in May 2023, but there’s still a risk of infection, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). [3] [4]

Your credit card’s travel protections are worth considering, but you may not want to rely on that alone. Credit cards often limit travel coverage, and most companies don’t include trip cancellation coverage. [5]

Travel delay benefits can fill the gap — especially benefits with COVID-19 coverage. Compare the policy cost against the potential loss if you have to cancel or delay your trip to determine if it’s worth it. The up-front payment for travel insurance is typically a fraction of what you might spend out of pocket if plans go south.

The CDC reports that medical bills in the first six months of a COVID-19 diagnosis average nearly $8,400. [6] Factor in non-refundable trip costs, accommodation charges, and other miscellaneous expenses, and the expenses can skyrocket.

How to find the best travel insurance

If you’re concerned about the pandemic and the potential effects on your travels, here are some tips to help you secure a policy with the best travel insurance plan:

Research coverage and services

Compare multiple companies and policies and read reviews to see others’ experiences.

Check for pandemic coverage

Not all policies cover travel disruptions from COVID-19. Review your coverage to make sure it specifically addresses pandemic reasons.

Buy medical coverage

Travel policies don’t automatically include medical emergencies. Consider adding medical travel insurance, and ask about emergency assistance coverage and medical evacuation in case of a natural disaster.

Consider a cancel-for-any-reason insurance policy

CFAR policies can be beneficial, especially with unpredictable pandemic-related concerns and travel restrictions.

Understand refund policies

Read the fine print and policy information to verify how the insurer handles refunds. Some policies might offer partial refunds.

COVID travel insurance FAQs

The COVID-19 virus has made travel plans tricky. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a month-long vacation, here’s what you need to know about COVID-19 travel insurance.

Will travel insurance cover COVID cancellations?

It depends. Standard travel insurance policies don’t cover COVID-19 or other pandemic-related reasons, but some travel insurance companies offer specialty COVID-19 coverage against the virus’ potential interference. If you cancel your trip due to the virus, a COVID travel insurance policy may provide refunds or reimbursements for your expenses.

Do you get your travel insurance premium refunded if you cancel your trip?

Travel insurance offers varying refund policies depending on the travel insurance company, but it doesn’t refund your premium. Instead, coverage can reimburse you for prepaid trip costs, meals, hotel rooms, or cab rides because of the interruption.

Will travel insurance cover quarantine outside the U.S.?

It’s possible. Travel insurance policies may cover quarantine or self-isolation expenses outside the United States due to COVID-19 concerns. However, coverage depends on your specific policy and the circumstances leading to the quarantine. It’s crucial to review the specific details and look for “pandemic” or “epidemic-related” language to ensure coverage.

How does COVID travel insurance differ from regular travel insurance?

Regular travel insurance often covers typical trip cancellations, interruptions, or delays. However, many don’t address pandemic-related disruptions. COVID travel insurance provides specialized coverage for travel hiccups related to the virus, ensuring you’re shielded financially if COVID-19 affects your journey.

Though the height of the pandemic may have passed, Covid-19 continues to be a consideration in everyday life. And that's especially true for those who are traveling or booking a trip.

Getting sick on the road or having to cancel your vacation because of illness is a common concern. However, travel insurance can help you ensure you're covered. Many travel insurance policies consider Covid like they would any other illness, but not all. So, you'll still want to carefully read any travel insurance policy you're considering to make sure Covid isn't excluded. For the most comprehensive coverage, you'll want to opt for a plan with cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.

To find the travel insurance policies best suited to handle Covid-related issues, CNBC Select looked at Covid coverage and limits for medical coverage and evacuation, among other factors. We found four standouts for the best Covid travel insurance policies. (See our methodology to learn more about how we created this list.)

Does travel insurance cover Covid?

Travel insurance generally covers Covid-19 as it would any other illness. While fear of catching an illness isn't a cause for cancellation under most policies without a cancel for any reason (CFAR) add-on, being diagnosed with Covid-19 right before or during your trip could qualify you for cancellation, interruption or travel delay coverage.

As with any insurance coverage you're considering, read your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what it does and doesn't cover.

What does travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance can cover your trip expenses if you're unable to go due to an unforeseen, covered reason or face an illness or injury during your trip. It can also help in the event that you lose your bags or face delays in your itinerary.

Bottom line

If you find yourself coming down with Covid before or during a trip, travel insurance could help you recoup funds from a lost trip or cover medical bills while you're abroad. Look for a travel insurance plan with strong medical coverage and flexible cancellation options.

Frequently Asked Questions

When comparing COVID-19 travel insurance options, you'll want to make sure you fully understand the coverages included in each plan. For example, you should know the policy inclusions and limits for COVID-related claims, including coverage for testing, treatments, trip cancellation or COVID-related interruptions that can occur. Meanwhile, you should understand how your coverage will work if you contract some other illness while away from home.

Also ensure your travel insurance coverage will kick in for other mishaps that occur, and that limits are sufficient for your needs. If you're planning a trip to a remote area in a country like Costa Rica or Peru , you'll want to have emergency evacuation and transportation coverage with generous limits that can pay for emergency transportation to a hospital if you need treatment.

You can also invest in a travel insurance policy that offers cancel for any reason coverage. This type of travel insurance plan lets you cancel and get a percentage of your prepaid travel expenses back for any reason, even if you just decide you're better off staying home.

It depends on your private health insurance provider and/or travel insurance policy. As of May 11, 2023, private health insurers are no longer required to cover the cost of COVID-19 testing. Out-of-pocket costs for COVID-19 test kits at local drugstores and on Amazon are relatively affordable, however.

As you search for plans that will provide sufficient coverage for your next trip, you'll find travel insurance that covers COVID-19 quarantine both inside and outside the United States. However, you'll typically need to have your condition certified by a physician in order for this coverage to apply. Also make sure your travel insurance plan includes coverage for travel claims related to COVID-19 in the first place.

Many travel insurance plans do cover trip cancellation as a result of COVID-19, although the terms vary widely. You typically need to be certified by a physician in order to prove your condition. Disinclination to travel because of COVID-19 – such as fear of exposure to illness – will generally not be covered. This means you will actually have to test positive for coronavirus for benefits to apply; simply not wanting to travel is not a sufficient reason to make a claim.

If you want more flexibility in your COVID-19 travel insurance, ensuring you have a cancel for any reason policy may be your best bet, but be sure to check with your chosen travel insurance provider to assess your options.

Does travel insurance cover COVID?

What is not covered, finding travel insurers covering covid-19, the best covid travel insurance, covid travel insurance, recapped.

Traveling now carries with it more uncertainty than ever before. If you plan on traveling anytime soon, one thing you can do to protect yourself is get a trip insurance policy that includes coronavirus coverage. Previously, many insurers excluded COVID-related claims due to the virus’ status as a foreseen event/pandemic.

But now, some insurers are changing their tune. Here’s what you need to know about how to find travel insurance providers that offer coronavirus-related coverage, as well as what is and isn’t covered.

Coronavirus coverage falls into several categories:

Trip cancellation: You need to cancel a trip prior to departure because you, a covered travel companion or possibly someone you need to care for contracted COVID-19.

Trip delay: Your trip is delayed due to changing COVID-related guidelines.

Travel medical coverage : You (or a covered travel companion) become ill with COVID-19 while traveling abroad and incur health care expenses or require an evacuation.

Of providers that are offering COVID policies, most are covering these expenses.

Countries with Level 4 travel advisories: Some insurers disclose that if a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory is issued by the U.S. Department of State for a specific country, you will not receive coronavirus-related coverage. With cases surging in various countries unexpectedly, the list of Level 4 countries is constantly changing. Before booking a trip and purchasing a policy, make sure to check that the country does not have a Level 4 advisory.

Fear of getting sick while traveling: Canceling a trip because you’re afraid you’ll get sick does not qualify for coverage under your travel insurance policy. Travel insurance providers have a list of standard reasons that qualify for cancellation, including: car accident, jury duty, terrorist act, military duty and other extenuating circumstances. If you want ultimate flexibility to cancel a trip (no matter the reason), you’ll want to look into the cancel for any reason, or CFAR, supplemental upgrade , which is offered on some travel insurance plans. When you purchase CFAR, you can get up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as you cancel at least two days in advance. Not all plans offer CFAR as an option, so research before you purchase if you're interested in this add-on.

COVID-related events not directly related to you: If you planned on going to a conference or a family reunion that was canceled due to COVID-associated concerns, your travel insurer will not reimburse your nonrefundable flight or hotel accommodations.

Generally, the policies underwritten by U.S.-based travel insurance providers vary by state, trip information, traveler’s ages and other various details. Travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) is one of the very few comparison sites that allows you to filter by policies that offer coronavirus coverage.

To find a policy that specifically covers coronavirus-related losses, input your departure and return dates, your main destination and select “Search for Policies Now.”

In our example, we input the following details: A $3,000 paid-in-full trip to Greece leaving on Oct. 9 and returning on Oct. 18 by a 40-year old U.S. citizen who is a resident of California. The policy will include trip cancellation coverage.

travel insurance that covers covid

When incorporating the “Coronavirus Pandemic” filter, the results reveal that 57 out of 100 policies include this coverage. You can select additional filters, such as cancel for any reason, if you’re looking for that optional upgrade.

The results can be sorted by price, top sellers, top reviews and insurance providers, offering plenty of ways to easily search for the specific policy you’re looking for.

Each of the top three policies (which is just a sampling of the nearly 60 options) includes coronavirus cancellation and medical coverage, and displays the associated limits. Trip cancellation coverage is $3,000, representing the value of the trip. The price of the policy is clearly stated and ranges from 4.8% to 6.1% of the total trip cost. This range represents very typical travel insurance costs .

A recent NerdWallet analysis determined providers Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection , IMG and John Hancock Insurance Agency , Inc., among others.

Once you narrow your search, you’ll want to review the full policy details to ensure you’re familiar with what exactly is covered and not covered.

If you have specific questions — especially as they relate to the constantly changing travel advisories or whether coronavirus is considered as a foreseen event (which some providers will not cover) — you’ll want to reach out to the insurer. The last thing you want is to purchase travel insurance and later find out it will not cover you in your intended destination.

What to know about travel insurance as the pandemic enters a second year

Travel insurance policies have adapted to include the coronavirus — but they still don’t cover everything..

tsb platinum travel insurance covid 19

When people first started wondering if the novel coronavirus would impact their travel plans, many who had travel insurance got a rude awakening: Pandemics were typically excluded from coverage.

Over the next few months, insurers started to adjust and cover travelers if they contracted the virus and had to cancel a trip or seek medical attention while away. But there are plenty of other reasons people might need to cancel a trip during the pandemic that insurance may not cover.

“The first thing to understand is that travel insurance is not going to cover, sort of in a blanket fashion, all of the various issues or road blocks, if you will, for traveling in this time,” said Stan Sandberg, a co-founder of TravelInsurance.com

Brian O’Connell, an analyst with InsuranceQuotes , said it is worth the effort to be savvy and well-informed about policies now.

“I know it’s boring, I know it’s dull,” he said. “Read the language and ask a lot of questions. I think that people are becoming better insurance consumers in the last 12 months.”

As we near the second year of the pandemic, here’s what people need to keep in mind when considering travel insurance and navigating the complicated task of planning any trips.

New ways to protect your 2021 vacation

Cancellation because of a coronavirus diagnosis should be covered

Those who catch the virus before leaving on a trip shouldn’t have to worry about bearing the cost of canceling.

“If you get sick with covid, travel insurance plans today will treat that like really any other kind of unexpected illness or sickness,” Sandberg said. Insurance should cover the nonrefundable costs of the trip that you have to miss.

Megan Moncrief, the chief marketing officer for travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth , said some insurance providers will ask for a doctor’s note or proof of a positive test.

Getting sick while traveling should be covered, too

Now that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires a negative test before returning to the United States, travelers might discover they’re ill as they get ready to return home. Or they might develop symptoms even before they are scheduled for a return test.

Sandberg said the most common comprehensive policies should provide emergency medical expense coverage as well as coverage for the remaining nonrefundable costs of the trip, if it’s interrupted. For severe cases, he said, a comprehensive policy should also cover the cost of an emergency evacuation.

Moncrief said most policies will also pay for some of the costs of extending a trip if a traveler is forced to stay put and quarantine after a positive test result.

My annual travel insurance just auto-renewed and I've never felt so betrayed. — Stefan (@StefanEvans) January 28, 2021

Government rule changes aren’t a good enough reason to cancel a trip

If we have learned anything in the past year, it is that countries, states or cities might suddenly change their rules depending on the spread of the virus. More countries are now requiring quarantines for anyone who arrives, for example, and the U.S. government’s pre-arrival testing requirement went into place last month.

“The nature of travel has become so unpredictable with opening and closing borders, and changing requirements from the CDC,” Moncrief said. “Travelers say, ‘I don’t know what’s going to happen in three months, but I’m going to book this trip.'”

If travelers want any kind of protection for unforeseen government rule changes, their only option is to choose a “cancel for any reason” upgrade to a policy, if it’s available. That add-on comes with several caveats: It must typically be purchased within 14 days of the first payment made for a trip, and the traveler has to cancel the trip at least 48 hours before departure. It’s a costly option — roughly 40 percent more than a standard policy — and covers up to 75 percent of the nonrefundable cost of the trip.

Last-minute nerves? Insurance doesn’t have your back.

Experts also recommend the “cancel for any reason” upgrade if travelers are worried about an increase in cases in their destination or some other unforeseen crisis. Standard policies won’t help if new developments are scary enough to make people cancel their plans.

“We’re still hearing a lot of, ‘What if I’m afraid of travel?’” said Suzanne Morrow, vice president of business development at travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip . “Fear of travel never has been and never will be a covered reason.”

A beginner’s guide to travel insurance

And remember, some countries are requiring medical insurance that can cover coronavirus expenses

According to a roundup by Squaremouth, about a dozen countries are taking steps to make sure tourists can cover their medical expenses if they are diagnosed with the coronavirus during their stay. Depending on the country, that could mean providing proof of coverage up to a certain amount or paying for a local policy or government fee.

Costa Rica also requires minimum coverage of up to $2,000 for “extended lodging expenses” in case of infection with the virus or trip interruption. This, according to the country’s tourism board , “covers the extra cost of the passenger due to quarantine.”
