If you haven't seen Turnstile live, I insist that you buy a ticket the next time they are in your vicinity. You will walk out of the venue with your heart pounding and perhaps whisper to yourself, "Now THAT was a motherfucking rock and roll show."

This show was amazing. I’ve never seen any of the bands live before. I’ve also never been To Baltimore Soundstage even though I’ve been in Baltimore my whole life. I’d love to see everyone play again. Thanks for a sick night.

Turnstile Are the Only Rock Act on 2023 Rolling Loud Miami Festival Lineup

The Miami installment of this year's Rolling Loud festival features headliners Playboi Carti , Travis Scott and A$AP Rocky , with hardcore breakouts Turnstile serving as the only rock act on the entire lineup.

Established in 2015, Rolling Loud is a historically rap and hip-hop centric event and has become one of the world's biggest events to highlight these styles of music. This year, the fest will be held in Thailand (April 13-15), Rotterdam (June 30 - July 1), Portugal (July 5-7), Germany (July 7-9), Inglewood, California (already took place on March 3-5) and Miami, Florida, the latter of which being where the event first took place eight years ago.

While Turnstile are obviously not a rap or hip-hop act, getting booked at Rolling Loud is actually not all that surprising. The group has historically toured with artists far outside the traditional heavy music spectrum, offering up eclectic bills rather than stacking like-minded groups together for a few hours each night.

As far as their mainstream success goes, their song "Holiday" has been featured in a Taco Bell commercial for Nacho Fries and they delivered late night TV performances on  Late Night With Seth Meyers (Dec. 15, 2021) and  Jimmy Kimmel Live! (March 2, 2022). And despite not earning a Grammy award this year , being nominated in three categories is an impressive achievement in itself.

It's only a good thing for heavy music when a band such as Turnstile, who last released Glow On in 2021, can represent on a festival bill such as the one for this year's Rolling Loud event taking place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami from July 21-23.

Turnstile are set to hit the stage on Sunday (July 23) and their name prominently appears in the middle of the second line from the top of the bill, a seriously high placement considering their musical style doesn't match the fest's usual intentions.

View the full lineup below and head to the Rolling Loud Miami website for more details.

Turnstile Become First Rock Act to Join Rolling Loud Miami Lineup

By Althea Legaspi

Rolling Loud Miami is expanding into other genres for its 2023 edition. Turnstile become the hip-hop festival’s first rock act on the bill. This year’s eclectic lineup also includes non-hip-hop-focused acts including Pinkpantheress, Foushée, and Bryson Tiller. Spanish-language rapper Yovngchimi will also perform.

Travis Scott , A$AP Rocky , and Playboi Carti are set to headline the event, which takes place at Hard Rock Stadium July 21 through 23.

Tickets for the festival go on sale April 14 via Rolling Loud Miami’s website , with 3-day general and general+ admission, VIP and VIP+ ticket options, and shuttle and hotel booking offerings.

While the Rolling Loud franchise recently rolled out its California fest in March at Hollywood Park, its plans for Rolling Loud New York were canceled that same month after being held in 2019, 2021, and 2022. Rolling Loud Thailand will debut April 13-15 with Travis Scott, Cardi B, and Chris Brown headlining. Over the summer, the franchise heads to Europe for the second annual Rolling Loud Portugal, the first-ever Rolling Loud Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and the inaugural Rolling Loud Germany in Munich.

turnstile tour 2023

From the moment they hit the ground a decade ago, TURNSTILE have never stopped moving forward — and they’re sure as hell not about to look back. Joining Turnstile for headline shows will be critically adored, Australian hard-core prodigies SPEED

The Baltimore band, comprised of singer Brendan Yates, guitarists Brady Ebert and Pat McCrory, bassist Franz Lyons, and drummer Daniel Fang, immediately distinguished themselves from the pack with their infectious, aggressive punk fusion; their welcoming, satisfying live shows; and most importantly, their willingness to experiment, as seen by the steady evolution from their early demos to 2018’s Roadrunner ambitious debut Time & Space , the latter of which earned renown from The New York Times, NPR , The FADER , and others. The only constant in the TURNSTILE universe, aside from love, is progression.

TURNSTILE have always been about the journey; roadmaps, itineraries, and speed limits be damned. We’re all immensely lucky to be along for the ride.

Turnstile performing at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas

Turnstile | Texas Review | Ralph Arvesen

Fan reviews: Amazing! There shows are bright and energetic with the way the light and how they perform it’s all great. Turnstile delivers. The members of Turnstile all left every ounce of energy on the stage and rampaged through a blistering set of tunes. You really have to see it live to get it. Saw them in my home town and they kicked so much ass that I had to see them again. They put on an incredible show with the best energy. They deserve all the attention and success they’ve been getting lately. Don’t think another second about whether the tickets are worth it or not, just buy them already. You will not be disappointed. This is an experience you will always remember. By far the best show I’ve seen this year. The venue was awesome easy to get in and out. Great atmosphere for Turnstile the crowd was wild.

Turnstile’s Guide to Open House New York Weekend 2023

By Andrew Gustafson

Open House New York Weekend (Oct 20–22) is just a few days away, and with over 330 partners participating this year, it’s impossible to do it all. So we scoured the Weekend planner and highlighted some of our favorite spots. So don’t be surprised if you see one of us there, leading a tour or taking in the experience on our free time!

turnstile tour 2023

Brooklyn Navy Yard

The Brooklyn Navy Yard will throw open its gates on SATURDAY ONLY , 12pm–6pm, and at least 35 artists and manufacturers are taking part. There’s so much to see at the Yard, but we wanted to highlight artist Nick Golebiewski (who also leads tours for Turnstile) and welder and sculptor Michelle Greene in Building 280, jewelry makers Carey Bilbo and Casey Sobel in Building 131, and electric motorcycle manufacturer Tarform in Building 303. Some companies will be hosting tours on a first-come basis—you can sign up when checking in at the Yard’s gates ( more info ).

Enter the Yard via Building 77, Sands Street, or the NYC Ferry landing, and BNY staff and OHNY volunteers will help you navigate the 300 acres and 70 buildings of the vast Yard. If you get hungry, the Food Manufacturing Hub in Building 77 will be open, including Russ & Daughters and Transmitter Brewing . You can stop by the Naval Cemetery Landscape on the Williamsburg side of the Yard, open Saturday and Sunday, 10am–6:30pm. Elsewhere in Fort Greene, step into the crypt of the 1908 Prison Ship Martyrs Monument , commemorating the 11,500 lives lost in prison ships in the Wallabout Bay, on Saturday, 11am–2pm. Or on Sunday at 12pm, you can take a guided tour of the historic campus of Pratt Institute (RSVP required).

  • Brooklyn Army Terminal

This year marks 10 years of leading tours of the Brooklyn Army Terminal in partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, but it was on OHNY Weekend 2012 when we first visited this remarkable place. Our staff will be offering highlights tours of the Terminal’s iconic atrium on both Saturday and Sunday at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. No need to RSVP, just show up and join us! And if you want to just come and explore the grounds, the site will be open 12pm–6pm both days ( more info ).

Some tenants in the Brooklyn Army Terminal will also be holding open houses. During OHNY’s “Factory Friday,” the nonprofit MakerSpaceNYC will be open 10:30am–3:30pm for tours and open access, and they will be doing machine demonstrations on some of their equipment at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm ( more info ). BioBAT Art Space , the only art gallery in New York City dedicated to sci-art, will be open on Saturday, 12pm–5pm, showing their new exhibit, “Embodied Futures: Exploring Interspecies Ethics Towards an Ecology of Care” ( more info ).

Inside recycling facility showing green machinery on multiple levels inside a large warehouse building.

Compost and Cans

And while you’re in Sunset Park, visit the Brooklyn Grange , a 2.5-acre farm located atop the Liberty View Industrial Plaza. OHNY coincides with their Fall Fest on Sunday, 10am–3pm, when they will be hosting farm tours, a farmer’s market, and education programs for families. You can even get your hands in the dirt and help with the weeding! Head one block down towards the water, and you can visit the Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility , which processes all of the city’s curbside glass, metal, and plastic recyclables. You can see the facility in action (the garbage never stops coming), and it is also home to the Recycling Education Center. Open access is Saturday only, 11am–3pm.

If you’re really interested in recycling, you should head across the borough to Bushwick to visit Sure We Can , a nonprofit communal space run by and for the city’s canners. More than one million cans and bottles are redeemed each month at this facility, each rescued by hand from the city’s trash cans, but Sure We Can also provides support services to their community of 1,000+ canners. Tours will be offered on the hour on Saturday, 12pm–5pm on a first-come basis ( more info ). Can’t make it out to Bushwick? Then watch our virtual tour of Sure We Can with executive director Ryan Castalia from 2020.

Olmsted-Beil House

Olmsted’s New York

There are several events taking place at the Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted-designed jewels of the city. On Saturday, 11am–2pm, will be a special open house at the recently-restored Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park, including tours of the exhibit currently on display, the J’ouvert Genesis Immersive Experience. In Central Park, there will be special events at the Chess and Checkers House and the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater . Or make your way out to Staten Island to the Olmsted-Beil House , Olmsted’s former farmstead where he developed his skills in horticulture and landscape architecture. The site will be open Saturday and Sunday, 12pm–4pm, and on both days at noon, there will be an illustrated lecture, “The Olmsted-Beil House Through Time.”

Though not officially part of OHNY, on Saturday, 11am–3pm, the Quaker Cemetery in Prospect Park will host an open house. It is a unique 10-acre landscape that is separate from, but surrounded by Prospect Park and is still an active cemetery owned and maintained by the New York Quaker Meeting. Founded in 1849, 16 years before park construction began, the park’s designers decided to just build around the cemetery, and this incredible oasis contains some of the oldest and largest trees in the park.

Live Review: Turnstile @ Ottobar — 5/15/23

Live Review: Turnstile @ Ottobar — 5/15/23

For the musical acts fortunate to be so successful, there’s a point on the popularity scale past which a small club show becomes almost impossible. But the diverse musicians who call Baltimore home take a certain pride in the Charm City that can effectively convert the unthinkable into a feasible idea.

Turnstile blew minds with the short notice late last week that it would be performing a hometown show on Monday night and that it would be at, of all places, Ottobar — a beloved old stomping ground of the skyrocketing hardcore band and a venue with a capacity of about 350.

It was a wild proposition from a group that’s been touring with Blink-182 to open sold-out arena shows and just two days prior played to tens of thousands at the first Sick New World Festival in Las Vegas.

In what was a benefit with all proceeds given to Baltimore Youth Arts on May 15, Turnstile erupted across an epic, raging set that will go down as a show for the ages and undeniable proof of how an outfit can zoom to such great heights so swiftly.

Some fans had waited in line for the better part of the day in hopes of buying one of the few tickets released for sale at the North Howard Street venue, and the long queue had formed early in the evening as those wishing to gain entrance mixed with people lucky enough to secure a ticket when they’d gone on sale online the previous Friday morning.

Stream Turnstile’s most recent studio album, Glow On from 2021, via Spotify:

Once inside, few could believe what was about to unfold, and conversations echoed a similar sentiment: it could be a long time before a band with the current stature of Turnstile — a 2023 Grammy nominee in three award categories, invited to perform all over the globe — ever plays such an intimate show again.

But once the music began, Ottobar burst into an electrifying scene that longtime fans were saying was a throwback to earlier Turnstile days, which was likely the plan as the band squeezed this gig in between major road dates.

Within the first few notes of “TLC,” which was released as the band’s fifth EP before its inclusion on 2021’s acclaimed GLOW ON, fans had already begun scurrying onto and launching themselves from the stage. Chaotic movement mixed with intense, pounding instrumentation and flickering lights to create commotion and mayhem on the lower level.

Bodies of all sizes, big and small, and from all walks of life — one chap had his foot in a cast boot — hurled themselves from the stage in a stunning display that marvelously epitomized the zeal of Baltimore’s music community, where all sounds seem to coexist, thrive and — thanks to venues like the storied Ottobar and various community spaces — bring different people together.

Most of the folks there Monday night were drenched in sweat, and some even bled a little before being quickly helped by staff. With water flung in any direction, it stirred up the warm air to cast vapors into the venue space, making it an extravaganza to behold and a fulfilling experience for those lucky enough to be there.

Even up in the narrow balcony, patrons thrashed and screamed along with lead vocalist Brendan Yates, who himself leapt onto the fervent and diverse audience early in the evening before being hoisted back on stage, just narrowly avoiding a collision with a random speedster who was gaining momentum for yet another dramatic vault.

Yates was of course alongside bassist “Franky” Franz Lyons, guitarist Pat McCrory and drummer Daniel Fang — Yates, Lyons, and Fang were part of the original core to form the band in 2010 , and McCrory came on in 2016 to play rhythm guitar before recently picking up lead duties.

With Brady Ebert, another founding member, departing the group just last fall and McCrory taking on his responsibilities, the touring squad now features rhythm guitarist Meg Mills, who was also on stage at Ottobar as Turnstile presented a prime slice of its catalogue in a festive, unforgettable manner.

Watch the official music video for Turnstile’s track “HOLIDAY” via the band’s YouTube channel:

Local music dignitaries were on hand, too, — Lindsey Jordan was there enjoying the show — and a number of successful musicians or artists from Baltimore to New York and beyond were essentially leading the way in stagediving and crowd surfing like seasoned veterans.

The tireless May 15 set would include a choice batch of the enormous, volatile and provocative tracks that comprise the band’s heralded third studio album, including raw, blistering versions of songs like “ENDLESS,” “DON’T PLAY,” and “FLY AGAIN.”

Takes from the first two albums — 2016’s Nonstop Feeling and 2018’s Time & Space — were gassed-up for the occasion as Turnstile showed its sound to be expanding and certainly not limited to what might define the hardcore genre. As some have pointed out, they could in fact be reshaping it.

Through the hysteria of Monday’s hour-long performance, Yates conveyed his and the band’s gratitude to those in attendance, Ottobar, and, of course, the night’s beneficiary, Baltimore Youth Arts, an art and entrepreneurship program serving 14- to 22-year-olds who are involved in the juvenile justice system .

Revisit Turnstile’s 2018 studio album, Time & Space, via Spotify:

Spotlighting more material from the latest album, the night eventually included the illusory, lonesome Blood Orange collaboration “ALIEN LOVE CALL,” and as anticipated it featured overpowering editions of “BLACKOUT” and “HOLIDAY,” a fitting closer for the high-level roughhousing taking place from start to finish.

A city recognized for its collective, thriving music scene, Baltimore has so much to pride already. But for a world-famous band with so much push to look back and return home to party with what looked like a whole bunch of friends, all for a good cause, the Charm City received a major tip of the cap from this thrilling, cutting-edge team of musicians.

While it isn’t likely Turnstile soon returns to the small venues of its hometown, the band does swing back through later this month to play on significantly larger stages — Capital One Arena on May 23 and Baltimore Arena on May 26 .

Turnstile Announce Biggest UK Show To Date

Turnstile

Turnstile have topped off their breakthrough year by announcing a short European tour for summer 2023. The dates include their biggest UK show to date – a night at London’s Brixton Academy. The trip will also take in performances at Primavera Sound 2023 in Barcelona and Madrid, which is set to be headlined by Depeche Mode, Blur, Kendrick Lamar, Rosalía and more.

Tickets for Turnstile’s 2023 UK and European shows will go on sale here from 10am local time on Friday 9 December.

The Baltimore band were recently nominated for three Grammy Awards – Best Rock Performance (Holiday), Best Rock Song (Blackout), and Best Metal Performance (Blackout). Drummer Daniel Fang spoke to Rolling Stone about being nominated in both the metal and rock categories. “I personally like that because, for a lot of us, genre feels like an antiquated term and perspective,” Fang said. “Generally speaking, trying to fit an artist or a song into a genre feels like you’re playing by arbitrary rules. So I think it’s kind of refreshing to be placed in two different genres because that just highlights that you shouldn’t be restricted.”

Frontman Brendan Yates agreed, “Growing up, where we came from and what we’re inspired by, it’s a very wide spectrum of music — including punk and metal and rock and all kinds of things,” he says. “So the fact that it somehow could fit into both feels pretty accurate to us.”

“I always feel like there’s not really any measure of greatness when it comes to music because music can reach people in so many different ways and different scales. The impact it can leave on someone is impossible to measure,” Yates says. “Once you accept that, you can look at things through a different lens. Being recognized on one scale that’s a universally accepted platform — that somehow a band like ours from Baltimore is being recognized by different people from different worlds — is super cool and exciting.

“What’s looked at as the most popular thing is always going in circles,” Yates says. “Everything is always equally existing — not dying, just taking different shapes. What’s considered mainstream is always shifting. I think it’s good for things to be constantly shifting. It’s showing signs of progression and you never want to get stagnant.”

The most frustrating set clashes of Laneway Festival 2023

Set times are out and it’s time to start planning your Laneway experience – here are the most difficult choices you’ll have to make…

Laneway Festival 2023

It’s less than a month until Laneway Festival makes its glorious comeback, with its first edition since early 2020 set to take place across five Australian dates (and one New Zealand date) in February.

  • READ MORE: Here are all the biggest concerts and tours coming to Australia in 2023

Returning with a stacked line-up of both international heavyweights and homegrown favourites, Laneway 2023 has something for everyone. And while those with the unenviable gig of organising timetables for this year’s events have done a pretty good job at ensuring clashes aren’t too painful and there’s little overlap for similar audiences, there remain some tough decisions for eclectically-minded festivalgoers this year.

Check out this year’s set times here and see some of those difficult choices below.

Joji vs. Fontaines D.C.

Fontaines D.C.

Where: Brisbane and Perth When: 8:25pm on the Never Let It Rest stage vs. 8:10pm on the Hell Fck Yeah!/Born Sandy Devotional stage

While not sharing much in common stylistically, both Joji and Fontaines D.C. will make their long-awaited Australian debuts as part of this year’s Laneway, making for a tough choice when it comes down to who to see towards the end of the night.

Joji comes prepared with latest album ‘Smithereens’ (featuring TikTok-fueled mega-hit ‘Glimpse of Us’) while Fontaines have got their latest masterpiece ‘Skinty Fia’ to draw from. Ultimately, this is probably going to come down to what sort of Laneway experience you’re after and whether you’re more inclined towards slow-burning pop ballads or searing, gloom-drenched post-punk.

Phoebe Bridgers vs. 100 Gecs

Recommended.

Phoebe Bridgers

Where: Sydney and Perth When: 9pm on the Good Better Best stage vs. 9pm on the Everything Ecstatic stage (Sydney), 7:30pm on the Good Better Best stage vs. 7:25 on the Everything Ecstatic stage (Perth)

Did you hear that? It’s the sound of thousands of very online, very emotional Laneway attendees’ hearts breaking at the realisation they’ll have to pick between Phoebe Bridgers and 100 Gecs .

No judgement here: it’s a very difficult decision. Gecs are bringing their experimental pop excess and wild stage show to Australian shores for the first time, while Bridgers has not visited since her debut tour in 2019 – releasing acclaimed second album ‘Punisher’ in that time. The good news is, whether it’s Bridgers’ lighters-in-the-air torch songs or Gecs’ glitched-out, hyperactive hyperpop, you’re guaranteed a stellar show either way.

Haim vs. Turnstile

turnstile tour 2023

Where: Adelaide and Perth When: 10pm on the Good Better Best stage vs. 10pm on the Lion Arts Factory stage (Adelaide), 9:30pm on the Good Better Best stage vs. 9:30pm on the Born Sandy Devotional stage (Perth)

A few years ago the overlap here may have been relatively minimal. However, since releasing their Grammy-nominated, hardcore crossover opus ‘Glow On’ in 2021, Turnstile have brought an entire legion of new fans from outside the genre all the way in. (They’ve also just dropped off the Sydney and Brisbane stops of the festival because of the Grammys, which makes their remaining Laneway sets all the more precious.)

Both bands are the final acts on their respective stages and offer a tempting way to close out your Laneway experience: the stadium-sized pop-rock of Haim – who recently revealed they’re working on album four , by the way – or the frenzied, sweaty moshpits courtesy of hardcore punk’s leading flagbearers.

The Beths vs. Harvey Sutherland vs. The Lazy Eyes

Liz Stokes of The Beths. Credit: Dave Simpson/WireImage

Where: Melbourne When: 1:45pm on the Dean Turner stage, 1:55pm on the Everything Ecstatic stage, 2pm on the Never Let It Rest stage

A fun – that is, painful – three-way split relatively early in the day for Melbourne Laneway attendees, divvying up a few of the most exciting local (or in The Beths’ case, just across the Tasman) acts of the last couple years.

  • READ MORE: Harvey Sutherland: “I’m not on TikTok talking into my phone, I’m just trying to make songs that resonate with people”

Both The Lazy Eyes and Sutherland released their long-awaited debut LPs last year, while The Beths reached new heights with ‘Expert in a Dying Field’. If you’re keen to get your boogie on early then Sutherland’s neurotic instrumental-funk jams are the perfect soundtrack to do it. If guitars and drums are more your thing, it’s a slightly tougher pick.

Mallrat vs. Julia Jacklin

turnstile tour 2023

Where: Sydney When: 4:30pm on the Never Let It Rest stage, 4:50pm on the Hope Springs stage

Jacklin’s late addition to the Laneway line-up in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane is cause for celebration, but it does present a potentially challenging decision for Sydney festivalgoers who are also Mallrat fans.

  • READ MORE: Mallrat: “When pop music is done with respect for the listeners, it’s perfect and exciting and beautiful”

On the one hand, we recently declared Jacklin’s ‘Pre Pleasure’ the best Australian album of 2022 , and getting to hear some of those songs live for the first time is a hugely promising prospect. On the other, the likes of Mallrat’s ‘Butterfly Blue’ cuts such as ‘Your Love’ and ‘Rockstar’ – along with older favourites like ‘Groceries’ and ‘Charlie’ – are perfectly primed for the summer festival setting.
