Despite only manufacturing golf shoes since 2016, Under Armour has quickly started making some fo the best golf shoes on the market. Its latest flagship model comes in the shape of the HOVR Tour SL, a shoe with a full-knit upper and the backing of bio-mechanist Jean-Jaques Rivet. It's a bold golf shoe with even bolder claims, so I was excited to take it out on course and see what it was all about. 

I've got to start with the highlight of this shoe which is the spikeless outsole. By using a mixture of TPU on the centre of the outsole and rubber nubs on the toe and heel, Under Armour has built a shoe on one of the best spikeless outsoles currently on the market. I had to regularly remind myself I wasn't wearing spikes, such is the grip on offer from this outsole and I truly think this has all year round wearability. While the 2022 FootJoy Pro SL , FootJoy Fuel and new Ecco Biom C4 offer very sound spikeless grip, for me Under Armour has taken it a step further. 

To aid this general feeling of grip and stability, the HOVR Tour SL also features an external heel counter to help achieve a locked-in feeling when the shoe is on. While I was cautious that this might be a bit firm, it only adds to how well supported your foot feels, locking it in place in a comfortable manner. Indeed, the less your feet move around in a shoe when you swing a golf club, the less they'll ache after a round. 

The knit upper is the next most significant part of this shoe, and it was another impressive feature. I'm not a huge fan of knit golf shoes - previous knit models have tended to offer less support versus a leather upper shoe and they can be more prone to staining. Under Armour was clearly aware of the pitfalls of some knit golf shoes and tackled them head on. 

Firstly, the HOVR Tour SL uses Under Armour's proprietary Intelliknit technology that claims to overcome the performance shortfalls of a knit upper. Using 'stretch' yarns and 'lockdown' yarns combined, the shoe gives you support in the parts of the foot where you need it most, and flexibility elsewhere. There is a tendency in golf to forget that all of our golf swings - no matter where you are on the handicap spectrum - are highly athletic movements, and we need golf shoes to support those movements. This was certainly Under Armour's philosophy when crafting the HOVR Tour SL and it feels like it's been achieved. 

Knit shoes tend to be a bit on the clammy side too, but the HOVR Tour SL excelled in keeping my feet at a comfortable temperature, being very breathable even on an unseasonably warm March weekend. The Intelliknit upper is also coated with a waterproof membrane that keeps water from penetrating the fabric and allowing it to wick off the surface. As the shoe doesn't have a conventional tongue, water can't get in the shoe unless you step in ankle high water. In the same vein, the shoe also wipes clean very easily, again quashing one of my initial concerns about a knit shoe. In summary, banish any preconceptions you have had about knit uppers, as it feels like Under Armour has cracked something special here with the Intelliknit system. 

While the shoe is fit to burst with new technology, it was good to see Under Armour's HOVR cushioning compound has returned in the midsole. This gives a nice amount of soft cushioning under your foot and, while the shoe is a little firm under foot when you first try them on, it doesn't take long for the HOVR foam to loosen up and the knit upper to mould nicely into the shape of your foot. 

It's very hard to pick faults with this shoe and in theory this should appeal to a very wide range of golfers. While the styling suited my eye, I can see how it could divide opinion. The knit upper will certainly divide opinion too but, as I've said throughout, the HOVR Tour SL has done a lot to take all the pitfalls of a knit golf shoe and make them right. If you stability is at the top of your list when it comes to buying a new golf shoe, you can't look much further than this. If stability isn't on your 'must-have' list when it comes to a golf shoe, I'd seriously considering moving it right to the top.

Under Armour HOVR Tour SL Shoe Review

Since bursting on to the scene in 2016 as the 'golf brand for athletes', Under Armour has become one of the most popular options on the market when it comes to golf shoes.

Their latest range for 2022 again features input from JJ Rivet, one of the leading sports biomechanists in the world, and includes an update to their HOVR range.

The new HOVR Tour SL is designed for golfers looking for the lightweight ease of a spikeless shoe, but with all the performance benefits of a tour-level spiked shoe.

The full-knit upper on the new shoe uses Under Armour's Intelliknit technology to combine stretch yarns and lockdown yarns to provide more stability in the golf swing. This is said to lock you down in the areas where you need support and allow for more stretch where you need flexibility.

The Intelliknit has been treated with NeverWet technology and has a waterproof membrane, so that golfers can wear the shoe in even the worst weather conditions without fear of water getting in.

The design of the outsole is a combination of rotational, horizontal and vertical traction technologies which encourage golfers to better transfer power from the ground into the swing.

The Hovr Tour SL provides spike-like stability and grip thanks to a combination of a lightweight TPU, UA Rotational Resistance Traction and injected rubber spikes in the heel and forefoot.

On the outsole there are also strategical flex channels to further increase traction, stability and power by keeping the foot grounded through the swing for longer.

An external heel counter locks the heel further back into the shoe, creating a fit that promotes maximum stability and power.

Under Armour have been one of the brands to lead the way when it comes to golf shoes blending more and more with everyday athletic trainers, and this latest addition to the HOVR range is no different.

The shoe immediately strikes you as an ultra-modern design which has plenty of hallmarks of a trainer, albeit it is also easy to see that its packed with technology too.

The black, red and grey colourway is a useful choice if you want to get a little more use out of these shoes as it means they'll be less likely to show up dirt and mud - although there is also a grey colourway too which gives them more of a summer feel.

To be honest I wasn't a huge fan of the look of the shoe. The contrast between the knit on top and then the thick plastic midsole looks a bit like Under Armour are trying to squeeze two separate shoes into one and I'm not completely sold on the design, even though the grey option was better in my opinion.

With a knitted upper and mesh sock liner, I was expecting these shoes to be comfortable and they certainly didn't disappoint.

As soon as you slide the shoe on (this may take a little bit of getting used to if you haven't used a shoe like this before) you can feel the knit wrapping around the top of your foot very snugly, it's a completely different feeling to having to use laces to tighten the fit.

The laces themselves come more into play on the side of the foot, and tightening them seems to secure the side of the foot rather than the top to give you that 'locked-in' feel.

Initially the sole felt a little firm underfoot, almost as if I was wearing spiked shoes, but over time this actually came to be more of a reassurance because it served as a reminder of the traction and stability of the shoe.

Under Armour have again worked with JJ Rivet, an expert in sports biomechanics, in the development of this shoe to provide a combination of traction and ground force reaction to help you get the most from your swing.

Performance

I have played two rounds of golf in these shoes - once on a warm, dry spring day and once on a cold, wet morning - and both times I can confirm the performance was fantastic.

After just a couple of holes I felt as if I had got used to the fit and feel of the shoe, because there is a little bit of a contrast in the slipper-like feel of the upper compared to the relative firmness of the sole.

In all honesty I'm really not sure that you'd know that this was a spikeless shoe had you not seen the sole before you put them on, such was the traction provided. I felt so secure when walking and swinging, regardless of the lie, with just the right level of feel for the turf allowing me to use the ground during the swing to my advantage.

One drawback I was that the Hovr Tour SL did tend to pick up quite a bit of debris, resulting in you having to give them a good blast with the air compressor at the end of each round, but I suppose it probably suggests that the traction is good.

Overall the stability was great. Knitted shoes like this can often feel like you don't get much support around the top of the foot and even into the ankle when walking and swinging, but the Hovr Tour SL provided all of the help you'd want from a shoe.

The second round I played was a good chance to test whether these shoes were truly waterproof and I'm happy to report that they passed with flying colours. There's also a one year waterproof warranty in case something does happen to go wrong.

Under Armour HOVR Tour SL Shoe Verdict

A price tag of £150 means that the Hovr Tour SL is pretty reasonably for a spikeless golf shoe, putting it in a similar ballpark to other leading models in this category like the FootJoy Pro|SL (£159.99) and Adidas ZG21 (£160).

It's packed with game-improvement technology for that price though, and the contemporary looks combined with the fact that it comes from a trusted brand such as Under Armour means that this shoe should do pretty well, most likely with younger golfers.

As I mentioned earlier the design of the shoe wasn't quite to my taste but I couldn't really fault the performance at all.

Knit shoes can sometimes be a bit stuffy, particularly when playing in the summer, but the Hovr Tour SL was breathable and comfortable even when testing in warmer conditions.

If you want a modern-looking, new pair of spikeless shoes for the summer, but don't want to compromise on performance, then these should definitely be on your shortlist.

Would I Wear Them?

Based on performance alone, absolutely. And while the Black/Red colourway wasn't my favourite, the Grey colourway would definitely be a good option if you're playing golf in the dry summer months.

Under Armour has recently released a stylish and sporty HOVR Tour SL shoe, so we headed out onto the fairways at Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate in Sussex to test it out.

Under Armour HOVR Tour SL  features HOVR mid sole tech to provide all the comfort and feel you could possibly wish for from a premium golf shoe, and it has the traction of a spiked shoe with its low base keeping you grounded - perfect for when playing those delicate flop shots around the green. 

The knit upper also provides additional levels of comfort. 

The HOVR tech placement also supports the natural movement of the foot during the swing, providing 'zero gravity feel' to maintain energy return. The shoe also utilises a Compression Mesh Energy Web that contains and moulds HOVR foam to give back the energy you put in along with exceptional comfort. 

HOVR Tour SL also has an upper made from UA IntelliKnit fabric, which has an almost sweater-like feel for soft, supportive and breathable comfort. You also have a waterproof membrane to keep you dry all year round, backed up with a 1-year guanratee.

GolfMagic Verdict

One of the most sporty and functional golf shoes we have ever worn, and without doubt our favourite ever Under Armour golf shoe.

HOVR Tour SL has provided us with excellent comfort all the way round the golf course since we have been reviewing it. 

This shoe has the performance of a spiked, bulkier shoe, but all in a smaller knitted spikeless model.

It's not often that a shoe can fit like a glove, but we found that we could walk 18 holes with ease as soon as we tried these on. This is, of course, subjective to the user, but it was clear that Under Armour has focussed on the comfort of the shoe for this new model.

Some may not be a fan of the knit aesthetic and we would say we usually prefer a leather golf shoe, but the design of the HOVR Tour SL is certainly a modern, refreshing aesthetic that looks even better in person.

We have been wearing these for over a month now, and on the course we play, we need a lot of support. Despite being lightweight, these shoes outperformed our previous shoes and we felt extremely stable throughout the golf swing.

Golf shoes themselves are often neglected by amateur golfers, but we noticed a slight improvement in ball-striking when wearing these shoes... a weird statement we know, but by using the ground throughout the golf swing in a much more efficient manner, we were able to hit the middle of the clubface more consistently, and thus gain a little extra distance. 

This shoe is a must-try for all golfers, and we consider it one of the better value for money golf shoes of the premium golf shoe brands this season. 

Under Armour got it right last year with the Spieth 5 but it is clear to see the HOVR Tour SL is a huge step up from that one.
