Guide was super friendly and informative. He also was really great at accommodating the dietary restrictions and allergies of our group. A great introduction to Victoria!

What a great food tour - a mix of historical spots and newcomers, sweet and savory, and fancy and casual spots to highlight the breadth of the local food scene and character of Victoria. Andy is fun, knowledgeable and passionate about his city - it was the perfect combination! I was a bit skeptical when my husband booked that this could be a cookie cutter food tour with some cursory little tastes at touristy spots, but this was anything but! He informed us up front that the tour is about 1200 calories - so definitely a full meal. We didn't need dinner even though the tour is 2-4pm. Would highly recommend!

We enjoyed our food tour with Andy! It was an informative tour, with food as the main star, and history about the restaurants and Victoria woven throughout. It's evident that Andy has developed strong relationships with the local businesses, as staff and owners took the time to do demonstrations or talk to us about their restaurant. Andy was a great guide; set clear expectations, let us know when bathrooms/water would be available, and seemed to be very mindful and respectful of taking up time/space in the restaurants. I won't list all of the local restaurants as to not spoil the tour, but as you can see from the pics, it was a nice variety of savory/sweet and food/drinks, as well as food from different regions. We did this tour on our first day in the city and revisited some of the restaurants during our stay. They were excited to hear that we were visiting after our sampler from Andy's tour. Thanks Andy!

Andy offers a great tour that highlights his deep commitment to the community and the businesses they make his neighborhood shine. His passion for Victoria, China Town, and food is obvious in his presentation and his relationships with the restaurants, bakeries, pubs, and other locations included in the tour. And you won't go away hungry! Well worth two hours of your time and the cost is a bargain.

LOVED this! Andy was so much fun, and knowledgeable. Clearly, this is his town. Wanna come back just to hang with him again. Don't miss this delight!

A fun walk through Chinatown, Old Town, and down to the waterfront of Victoria. Small group of congenital travels followed our guide through the streets and alleyways, stopping at 7 different locations for samples of their food and brief conversations with several of the proprietors.

A Taste of Victoria Food Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Vancouver Island View

Taste of Victoria Food Tour Review

To celebrate a milestone anniversary, my husband and I overnighted in Victoria. While there, we packed in as much fun stuff as possible. The Victoria food tour experience with A Taste of Victoria is a top highlight of our mini-getaway.

Tours are such a great way to experience any city. Here are my top reasons why:

  • Time-saving : City tours enable visitors to see many popular attractions efficiently, making the most of their time in a new place.
  • Insider knowledge : Guides provide insights and stories about the city's history, culture, and hidden gems, enhancing the experience.
  • Convenience : City tours offer hassle-free exploration, with transportation and logistics taken care of, allowing visitors to focus on enjoying the sights.
  • Safety and security : Traveling with a guide reduces the risk of getting lost or encountering unsafe situations in unfamiliar surroundings.

For these reasons alone, whenever available I typically always book a tour in any city I explore. Keep reading to learn about one of my favourite tours to date.

This article contains affiliate links, which means that if you happen to make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Our Taste of Victoria Tour Experience

We have taken many city tours, and I can honestly say that the Taste of Victoria Tour has been one of my all-time favourites.

During this food and history tour , you not only sample delicious food but also see places in Victoria you may not even know existed! (This was the case for us.) Plus, you get a fantastic history lesson along the way.

Andy, our tour guide and owner of Taste of Victoria, is extremely knowledgeable. You can tell he has done his research, and his love for the city shines through.

It was also amazing to see the mutual respect and admiration between Andy and all the shop owners we were introduced to. Upon leaving our second stop on the tour, the representative handing out tea samples said to a few of us, “Have a fun tour! It's not hard to do with Andy as your guide”.

Andy was well out of earshot when this comment was made, so it was a genuine response. And this was just one of many examples. Read the many wonderful reviews about this tour here .

What to Expect

During the two-hour walking tour , you experience 6 – 8 tastings. Along the route, you stop at several points of interest, accompanied by a history lesson.

On our particular tour, we stopped at approximately 12 – 14 places. Andy provides the perfect amount of time to eat or drink your sample, snap photos, and listen to the information about each location.

Only once did I feel a bit rushed…but that is solely due to being an extremely slow drinker of alcohol (my husband calls me “Nurse Nancy” for a reason). I only finished half of my cider sample when it was time to start packing up. (Again, I need to point out that everyone else in the group managed to finish their drink in ample time).

The Taste of Victoria Stops

On our Taste of Victoria food tour, we stopped at eight tasting locations. The tastings are sample-sized, yet you will NOT go away hungry. Being on the 11:00 am tour, we were extremely glad we decided to skip breakfast.

We sampled meatballs, two types of tea, cider and beer, pirogi, macarons, fresh-baked bread, and biscuits.

Each tour is a bit different, as Andy caters to dietary and group needs, as well as restaurant or shop availability. So your tour might look slightly different than ours – but I guarantee it will be just as good!

Good Eats in Victoria

Whether you visit them while on tour or not, I urge you to check out the following Victoria establishments on your own time. Based on how many locals frequent each shop, I'd take a guess that these are among some of the best food and drink establishments in Victoria.

  • Roast Meat and Sandwich Shop

These guys are so good they opened up a second location in San Diego. We sampled their famous meatball, and I'm drooling just thinking about it. Even at 11:00 a.m., the place was hopping with locals ordering dishes for their evening meal.

  • La Roux Patisserie

This beautiful shop in Chinatown makes you feel like you've entered a pastry shop in Europe. The macarons we sampled were as beautiful to eat as they were to look at. There were so many to choose from, but I decided on a Raspberry (deliciously tart) and a Salted Caramel (it's easy to see why this is their best seller).

  • Shanzee’s Biscuit Cafe

You may recognize this place from the Vic Food Guys spotlight on CTV. This is the only dedicated biscuits and gravy brunch spot in the Victoria area, and well worth a stop. While I loved the savoury sample, the chocolate and banana morsel had me yearning for more.

  • Sült Pierogi Bar

Yes, an establishment dedicated to pierogi! Who knew such a place existed? I'm so glad it does. Sült combines an Eastern European classic with world-inspired flavours and toppings, all while using Canadian-sourced, seasonal ingredients. These guys know flavour and do it well. It was the perfect ending to our food samples.

(We also stopped at La Tana Italian Bakery , which has since closed).

Drink Tastings

  • Just Matcha Tea Shop

With its health benefits, Matcha has become all the rage. During our tasting, we learned about this unique green tea (how it's produced and harvested, its tradition, and, of course, its health benefits). Every couple/family on the tour purchased a tin of Matcha – it's that good!

  • Silk Road Tea

Since 1992, Silk Road Tea has created the world’s finest, freshest, award-winning, organic teas, skin and body products. And it all started in Victoria’s Historic Chinatown. I noticed that many of the tour locations we visited served Silk Road Tea.

  • The Churchill

The Churchill Pub takes pride in offering a huge selection of various fermented and distilled drinks. They have 50 of Pacific Northwest's finest craft beer on tap! If craft beer is your thing, give this place a try.

While it is a 2-hour tour, the walk is relatively short between all the stops you make and the time it takes to eat or drink your samples. The tour covers roughly 2.5 km (1.5 miles), which totals about 30 minutes of leisure walking. And yes, for those wondering, the entire tour is wheelchair and stroller accessible!

You start your tour at the Victoria Public Market , an approximately 15-minute walk from hotels and resorts in and around the harbour.

Walking to the start of the tour is advised if you can manage it, as parking is at a premium near the Public Market. Also, many spots located near the Market only allow parking for a maximum of 90 minutes (not enough time for your tour).

If you must drive to the Victoria Public Market, use the nearby city parkades at either Johnson St. or Bastion Square.

The Takeaway

Overall, we were extremely impressed by Andy's Taste of Victoria food tour and feel it's great value for what you get. You can read the many exceptional reviews if you need further proof. A Taste of Victoria food tour is rated #1 out of Victoria's many food and drink tours .

A Taste of Victoria Food Tours Review – Bitesized Best of BC

victoria food tours reviews

Searching for the best Victoria food tours? A Taste of Victoria will leave you satisfied.

While exploring Victoria’s food and drink scene, I enlisted the help of a local food tour to understand better what makes the city a foodie favorite. Although I covered this outing in my overall take on British Columbia’s capital city,  a dedicated Taste of Victoria tour review is warranted. It’s that good.

Table of Contents

Meet Andy, Your Victoria Food Tours Guide

A Taste of Victoria Food Tours Guide

Andy is your guy if you want a crash course on Victoria’s history and its wonderful food scene. He did his undergrad in history at the University of Victoria and spent four years as a summertime pedicab driver, giving guided tours of his city. His love of food, local sights, and local ingredients led him to create A Taste of Victoria Food Tours, a perfect way to show off the city and some of its tastiest locations .

At the time of my Taste of Victoria Food tour review, Andy had only been operating for nine months but had already served over 1000 satisfied guests. Again. He is that good.

If the above doesn’t already make him overqualified, he loves to travel, too. He has visited 47 countries, so you know he is well-versed in cultures from all over the world, making him appreciate and understand Victoria’s diverse food scene that much more.

Market Eats

Our three-hour tour kicked off at the Victoria Public Market,  something I didn’t even know existed until this visit. Although located in the 1921 Hudson’s Bay building, the origins of the market are much more recent. The beautiful building was saved from years of vacancy and turned into the present-day market in 2013. Modeled after New York’s Chelsea Market, it currently houses plenty of unique boutique shops and restaurants and hosts events such as cooking classes and Victoria Craft Beer Week .

victoria food tours reviews

All this said I was a bit concerned when Andy ran down where we would be sampling – Olive Oil from Olive the Senses, fresh bread from the French Oven Bakery , pork crackling form Roast Meat & Sandwich shop , and tea from Silk Road Tea . Not because they didn’t sound great. They sounded like places that give away free samples. How would I fill up on that? And where is the value?

The short answer is that I was so very wrong.

At Olive the Senses, Andy explained the market’s interesting story and how it has become a focal point for flavor in the community. He highlighted how the shops work well together for both owners and clients, then gave us time to sample flavored oils and vinegar. We were asked to grab our favorites to bring along to our next stop, the French Oven Bakery. There, we sampled some amazing bread, including the softest ciabatta I have ever had, all while dipping in the oils and vinegar we brought with us.

A Taste of Victoria food Tour Review | Where History & Food Meet

Andy then advised us to grab some of our favorite bread for our next stop, Roast Meat & Sandwich Shop. Known for its use of only natural and humane meat, this spot is a local favorite for its sandwiches and massive (baked, not fried) pork crackling. We got to sample a small piece along with a couple of meatballs swimming in an amazing marinara sauce. The bread came in handy to sop up the remains.

A Taste of Victoria food Tour Review | Where History & Food Meet

Again, it’s so smart. It was a great way to tie the market together, creating a sense of community between local vendors and local flavours. And really, isn’t that what a local market should be?

Chinatown Stroll

Exploring Victoria’s Food & Drink Scene - A Foodie Weekend in BC’s Capital

We left the market fuller than anticipated and made our way through Victoria’s historic Chinatown. This is where Andy’s knowledge of the city really shined. I have visited Victoria several times and through the area but missed many things. Notably, a phone booth (who uses payphones?) decorated in Chinese fashion and the story behind the beautiful Victoria Chinese Public School, which still operates today.

We then ducked down the narrow corridor of Fan Tan Alley, again something I did not know existed until taking this Taste of Victoria Food Tour. I won’t give away all the details as I think you should take the tour, but I will say the history of gambling and Chinese culture is fascinating in North America’s second-oldest Chinatown.

Exploring Victoria’s Food & Drink Scene - A Foodie Weekend in BC’s Capital

Local Favorites

Our next couple of stops were local favorites, both old and new. First up was John’s Place, an eclectic diner known for its breakfast and has been operating in the same spot for 30+ years. It is also known for its homemade soup du jour, which we sampled regardless of it being a hot summer day. Try the borshch if available!

Sticking with an Eastern European trend we then visited the Sült Pierogi Bar where I had the best pierogies outside of Warsaw , excluding my grandmother’s of course. Why pierogies in Victoria and what makes them so good?

A Taste of Victoria food Tour Review | Where History & Food Meet

As manager  Ryan Broeckhuizen  explains, Sült Pierogi Bar exists because they wanted to embrace Canada’s diversity through food. They made a simple Eastern European staple Canadian by stuffing them with locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. It’s the use of these fresh ingredients that makes the place so good and a new local hotspot.

Their hip bar with local craft beer on tap doesn’t hurt. Nor does their bacon confit, which is made slowly over time and with plenty of love. And yes, you can taste the love.

A Taste of Victoria food Tour Review | Where History & Food Meet

Full Up on A Taste of Victoria Food Tours

By the time we wobbled out of Sült, I was stuffed. Thankfully we had a bit of a stroll down Government Street before our final stop at Rogers Chocolates . Along the way, Andy filled us in with titbit after titbit on this historic town and its architecture. This included the story about the mural on the Belmont building. Painted in 1922 simply because the folks behind this new building complained about losing their Olympic Mountain range view.

I am not sure how many times I looked at this mural without knowing it.

A Taste of Victoria food Tour Review | Where History & Food Meet

The history lesson continued inside Rogers Chocolates while we sampled a tasty truffle. From there, it was back to the harbor for goodbyes and one final story about the town’s most famous hotel .

victoria food tours reviews

The Empress recently got a facelift which included the removal of its iconic vines growing up its walls. While doing this, workers found all sorts of jewelry, leaving them to believe that a family of raccoons used to live in the vines and were stealing items from rooms with windows opened for relief during the pre-AC days. Can you imagine how much grief the hotel staff probably got and for how long?

It’s interesting stories like that, as well as Andy’s clear knowledge and love for local food, that make a Taste of Victoria food tours a no-brainer. Seriously, I’ve taken food tours all over the world , and this is truly one of the best. The only thing that would improve it is if Victoria had open liquor laws (like New Orleans ) so you could take samples of some of the great craft breweries as you stroll. Someday.
