Let’s Meet

If you have questions, come get answers.

We offer several ways to connect with the United States Air Force Academy. Our outreach programs can help you determine whether the Academy is right for you as well as help you make your application as competitive as possible. Sign up for an in-person tour or virtual event to get an in-depth look at campus and Admissions processes. Both feature live Q&A sessions with recently graduated lieutenants. If you’d like to see the base, but aren’t interested in attending, or do not have a school-aged person in your group, sign up for a self-guided windshield tour of the base to see areas of interest. You will not have a live brief or access to the airfield or cadet area but will get a good overview of what we have to offer.

Please be aware, tours are limited in size and fill up fast, especially over summer months.

OUTREACH EVENTS Let’s Talk

Throughout the year, representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy participate in college fairs, visit high schools or speak at community centers across the nation. These events are great opportunities to learn more about what the Academy has to offer.

The Top 11 U.S. Air Force Academy Attractions

Set at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills, the U.S. Air Force Academy is so much more than an undergraduate institution and military base.

The U.S. Air Force Academy is a collection of awe-inspiring attractions open to the public. In addition to state-of-the-art technology and modern architecture, this campus offers eleven different sites for civilians to explore. Don't miss these eleven sights while you're here.

1. Barry Goldwater Visitor Center

A must for those who have never previously been to the campus, the Visitor Center hosts exhibits of the campus, tells the history of the institution and features a mock cadet dorm room. The 250-seat theater plays a short movie on the hour and half hour. Catch the show and glimpse into everyday cadet life, complete with a snippet of the Graduation ceremonial hat toss and legendary Thunderbird flyover. Here visitors can purchase souvenirs and Academy apparel to show their Falcon pride.

2. U.S. Air Force Academy Planetarium

The original U.S. Air Force Academy Planetarium, which greeted visitors from 1959-2004, is back open after a multi-million dollar renovation from generous donations. The 50-foot dome is complete with built in 8K projectors, immersive surround sound and state-of-the-art reclining seats. Check out the latest schedule and enjoy free shows such as Oasis in Space, Great Bear Rainforest and Fighter Pilot. .

2. Noon Meal Formation

From the Honor Court, visitors can enjoy watching the noon meal formation . At 11:30 a.m., the Cadet Wing lines up numerically by squadron in front of the dormitories, Vandenberg and Sijan Halls. At the formation, 4,000 cadets march across the Terrazzo into Mitchell Hall to the Air Force song and other Department of Defense anthems, provided by our very own  Cadet Drum & Bugle Corps .

The formation is scheduled Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the school year, weather permitting. Since the formation is subject to cancellation without notice, call the Visitor Center at 719-333-2025 on the morning of your visit to find out if there will be a lunch formation taking place.

4. Cadet Chapel

Please note: The Cadet Chapel is closed for a major restoration that is estimated to last until Spring 2027.

Perhaps the most notable structure on campus, the Cadet Chapel encompasses the beauty of midcentury-modern architecture with inspiration from Air Force vessels. With stained glass symbols and historical accents, each congregation center has its own beauty.

5.. The B-52 Display

When accessing the base through the north gate, this static display will be hard to miss. The awe inspiring B-52 bomber was the backbone of America’s manned bomber force for more than half of the 20th century. Recent additions include the Air Warrior combat Memorial and an HH-3 Jolly Green Giant rescue helicopter.

6. Cadet Field House

This mega-sized sports arena is home to Clune Arena (basketball/volleyball) that seats 5,856 supporters, an ice hockey arena with seating for 2,502 fans and a six-lane indoor track that can accommodate 925 spectators.

7. Academic Overlook

Drive up North Gate Boulevard (which becomes Academy Drive) and pull over at this overlook to enjoy a scenic view of the Academy’s various campus buildings. Being one of the country’s finest higher education institutions, the U.S. Air Force Academy’s mission is to provide a well-rounded education for cadets to use throughout their Air Force or Space Force career and their individual lives.

8. Athletic Overlook

Just a few hundred yards to the west of the Academic Overlook, the Athletic Overlook provides guests a bigger picture to see just how massive the sports facilities at the U.S. Air Force Academy are. There are 150 acres of playing and practice fields that can be viewed from here. The public can attend games at the track and field, soccer, baseball and softball stadiums.

9. Arnold Hall

A student union and ballroom all-in-one location, this large hall hosts a 2,900-seat theater for cadets and the Richter Lounge Food Court , which has multiple food options catering to a wide variety of tastes. Stop by here to view displays featuring the Tuskegee Airmen, Women in Leadership and cadets who have become astronauts.

10. Doolittle Hall

This building is hard to miss, with a large Pegasus statue out front and houses the alumni association, The Association of Graduates. Following the Heritage Trail, you’ll cross the Challenge Bridge, see the Mall of Heroes, Memorial Wall, and the Southeast Asia Pavilion; an indoor and outdoor exhibit that is a stunning reminder of our role during the Vietnam era.

Don't forget to check out Doolittle Outfitters Retail Store for apparel, fan gear and more. Shop online or in person!

11. Falcon Stadium

The site of home football games and graduation, this large stadium was built in the fall of 1962 at a cost of $3.5 million. It is built in a natural bowl, has a capacity of 46,692 and stands at the base of the Rampart Range. In addition to Falcon Football, the stadium hosts a variety of sports and special events. To purchase football tickets call 719-472-1895 or visit www.goairforcefalcons.com .

USAFA Visitor Center and Hotel Coming in 2024

Construction is slated to begin on the TrueNorth Commons U.S. Air Force Academy Visitor Center, retail space, and hotel and conference center.

The new U.S. Air Force Academy Visitor Center and TrueNorth Commons mixed-use space are set to launch in Colorado Springs with high-flying plans that include top-shelf hotel service and cutting-edge architecture and design. The 57-acre complex located at Academy’s North Entrance will include the new USAFA Visitor Center, a four-diamond hotel and conference center, as well as commercial retail and office space.

The $340-million complex is the fourth and final development in the City for Champions projects, designed to add dimension, energy, economic vitality and tourism to the Pikes Peak region. The large-scale undertaking is being financed through a public-private partnership between the Association of Graduates and Air Force Academy Foundation , the City of Colorado Springs , Blue & Silver Development Partners and Provident Resources Group.

“This has been an incredibly collaborative effort and we could not be more pleased that the Visitor Center and TrueNorth Commons will become a reality, marking the successful completion of the entire City for Champions vision,” said Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers in a press release. “The Air Force Academy has long been a celebrated part of our city’s identity, and the Visitor Center will provide a fantastic opportunity to share it with residents and visitors alike.”

With modern and informative displays, a grand atrium and interactive exhibits, the new USAFA Visitor Center will expand opportunities for people of all ages to learn about Air Force and Space Force missions. Hands-on experiences may feature glider controls attached to a craft suspended from the ceiling and a speed challenge test to allow visitors to experience running at the local altitude. Other exhibits will feature Air Force Academy history and athletics. The new Visitor Center will also be designated a Colorado Welcome Center. Early renderings of the visitor center suggest that a series of tiered rooflines will create the impression of an airplane or series of planes taking flight.

Alongside the visitor center, the Blue & Silver Development Partners’ TrueNorth Commons mixed-use development will include more than 190,000 square feet of retail and office space and the 375-room hotel and conference center.

“This project will reimagine how we welcome visitors not only to our campus, but to the entire region,” said Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark, Superintendent, U.S. Air Force Academy. “For some of the most promising young people our nation has to offer, the journey toward leading the Air Force and Space Force begins right here in Colorado Springs. The new visitor center will tell the story of our Academy and its critical mission, and we are grateful for the supportive partnerships turning a bold vision into reality.”

The upscale hotel will be managed by Denver-based CoralTree Hospitality and will be second only to The Broadmoor in its number of rooms and meeting space. The yet-to-be named hotel will welcome Colorado visitors with an upscale spa and business center, as well as a variety of dining experiences that include a restaurant, bar and café.

The hotel’s most unique feature is likely to be two flight simulators in the lobby that will provide guests with a real-life pilot experience. The simulators will reproduce the flight deck of a Boeing 737 NG aircraft with seats, throttles, switches, pedals and yoke from an original aircraft (other parts of the flight deck are scale reproductions). The experience will include a 220-degree wraparound screen with HD imagery to make the experience as life-like as possible.

The hotel will be owned by Provident Group – Falcon Properties LLC, a special purpose nonprofit entity.

“This major milestone means we can proceed in making this exciting new project a reality for Colorado Springs, the Air Force Academy, local residents and visitors,” said Steve Hicks, chairman and chief executive officer, Provident Resources Group . “The financing for these exciting new projects was completed through a public-private partnership that included local stakeholders working alongside experts in the areas of finance, real estate development, construction, hospitality management and law to bring something truly amazing to Colorado Springs and the U.S. Air Force Academy.”

Construction is slated to begin spring 2022 with both the hotel and Visitor Center expected to open in 2024.

With a sprawling campus set against the Rampart Range north of Colorado Springs, the U.S. Air Force Academy is a functioning educational institution for future members of the military. Parts of the campus are open to the public and well worth a visit. The visitor center, a 31,600-square-foot facility, is a key stop for all guests. Walk through the informative exhibit about cadet life, which includes a life-size reproduction of a cadet dorm room (student dorms are not open to the public). Also learn about the different types of cadet uniforms and squadron patches; watch a 21-minute film about the Academy; and see a model of the stunning Cadet Chapel. Alas, the real chapel – with its imposing spires and beautiful stained glass – is undergoing a massive renovation and is hidden from view by a giant white box. It's scheduled to reopen to visitors in 2027.

The Planetarium is open to the public Fridays through Mondays and offers free shows; see the schedule here . Arnold Hall, the cadet social center, is also open to visitors; this is the place to go if you need a bite to eat. Travelers suggest picking up the map of key sites and walking trails at the visitor center before setting out on your own. However, some of the key overlooks are found prior to your arrival at the visitor center, so you may want to check out the online self-guided tour , too. The paved Chapel Trail – which is worth taking for views of the cadets' living quarters and classroom area – is short, but some past guests note that it can feel strenuous at the high altitude. You can also get to the overlook by driving to the parking area at the Planetarium.

The U.S. Air Force Academy is located about 15 miles north of downtown Colorado Springs. Visitors must enter through the North Gate (exit 156 on Interstate 25). Everyone in the vehicle 18 and older must present a valid ID for security reasons. You may also be asked to participate in a vehicle inspection. The visitor center is open to the public every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free. You can find more information on the Air Force Academy  website .

#1 Garden of the Gods

U.S. News Insider Tip: Since the park is free to enter, consider exploring Garden of the Gods multiple times during your stay to see the rock formations at different times of day. The light just after sunrise and before sunset makes them especially striking and photogenic. – Kara Williams

It's easy to see how this natural landmark earned such an ethereal title: These magnificent red rock formations look as though deities could've carved them. However, the sandstone pillars are, in fact, the work of geological activity and erosion over millennia. You can learn about the garden's formations at the Visitor and Nature Center, which houses numerous informative displays and hosts daily presentations. You are welcome to explore the park on your own time (either on foot or by bike) or take a guided nature walk from the visitor center for a fee. The park partners with Adventures Out West to provide Jeep, trolley and Segway tours; it works with Amp'd Adventures for guided electric bike tours. (Note: Tour prices vary by vehicle and tour length.) Or, if you're looking for a more authentic Wild West experience, you can reserve your spot on a guided horseback tour offered by Academy Riding Stables .

United States Air Force Academy, CO

United States Air Force Academy – Colorado Springs

One of the most well-known military institutions in the country resides in the city of Colorado Springs: the United States Air Force Academy. It’s an accredited four-year university with more than 4,000 undergraduate cadets enrolled each year.

About 70% of the faculty is comprised of active-duty Air Force officers. The rest of the teaching staff is a mix of long-term civilian professors, visiting civilian professors, as well as visiting professors from other branches of the U.S. military.

The mascot is the falcon, and the sports teams are known as the Air Force Falcons. Most of the athletics compete in the NCAA Division 1 Mountain West Conference.

History of USAFA

United States Air Force Academy, CO

In 1947, the Air Force was officially deemed a branch of the military, and plans for the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) were first proposed. After searching hundreds of different locations in various states, the committee settled on Colorado Springs as the clear winner for the academy with its natural beauty and varied terrain.

The USAFA opened officially in 1954, and many graduating members have gone on to become military leaders and politicians. In 2006, the campus underwent a renovation to upgrade many of its half-century-old buildings, and the campus is now as beautiful as ever.

United States Air Force Academy, CO

Today, the USAFA remains a state-of-the-art facility for military education and admission is aggressively competitive for its prospective cadets.

Cadet Chapel, Hiking and Self Guided Tours

United States Air Force Academy, CO

The Air Force Academy is open to the public at select times. There are a number of notable things to see and do. The elevation ranges from around 6,200 feet by I-25 to 9,000 feet 6,200 feet near the Farish Recreation Area. So come prepared for the altitude and take it slow.

Visitor Center – The 35,000 square-foot Barry Goldwater Visitors Center welcomes the public daily from 9am to 5pm. Go through the North Gate to access it. It features various films and exhibits, as well as a snack bar and gift shop.

Cadet Chapel – Of note is its famous chapel on the north side of campus, the Cadet Chapel. This architectural wonder is a popular place to capture a unique photograph as well as attend a special service. Although it’s currently under construction, estimated to be completed in 2023. To the east of the Visitor Center is a 1/3 mile paved trail winding thru nature to the Cadet Chapel. You can also park in the Arnold Hall parking lot to reach the chapel, a similar length but less hilly.

Landmarks –  There are also a few other landmarks to see on a tour of the grounds, such as the sporting facilities, notably Falcon Stadium, as well as Clune Arena and Falcon Baseball Field. There’s  also a museum dedicated to USAFA graduates and Falcons Hall of Fame. Arnold Hall features military and Academy exhibits. Honor Court showcases bronze statues and aircrafts.

United States Air Force Academy, CO

Cadet Lunch Formation – From Monday to Friday, 11:30am to noon, you can catch the cadet wing marching to lunch. Weather pending, you can witness the display from the Honor Court wall or by the Cadet Chapel, which both look over the Terrazzo.

Hiking – There are some beautiful hiking trails open to the public during normal visiting hours, 9am-5pm daily. The trails are open to military/government ID card holders between 5am and sundown daily. Trails include:

  • Falcon Trail – 13 mile loop open year round to hikers. It has interpretive signs along the way explaining various wildlife and geology of the region. It provides fantastic views around the Academy, crossing the road at several points, giving a chance to shorten the hike. Scouts can get a badge for completing the loop from a local troop.
  • Santa Fe Trail – Most of this trail runs parallel with the Academy and I-25 from Monument to Colorado Springs. It’s 40 miles long, and the sections of the trail that cross USAFA land could be closed for security.
  • Stanley Canyon Trail – 2 mile trail begins from the Academy Hospital parking lot through the canyon to Stanley Canyon Reservoir. Parts of the trail are steep with loose rocks. It does provide terrific views of The Springs.
  • Farish Hiking Trail – Once you finish the above 2-mile trail at Stanley Canyon Reservoir, you can trek the Farish Trail into Pike National Forest. It’s a 5.5 mile trail following old dirt roads for a majority of the distance to Farish Memorial and Academy recreational facility. Due to its elevation it gets cold and storms come in quick in the summer.

The USAFA is open to civilian visitors normally every day from 9am to 5pm, but check their website before you visit to confirm.

Getting There

There are two entrances to the Air Force Academy: via the South Gate and the North Gate roads. Both are accessible from I-25 via the North Academy exit to the south and the North Gate exit to the north.

A visit to this campus, one of the highest-profile military academies in the country, offers a limited but nonetheless fascinating look into the lives of an elite group of cadets. The visitor center provides general background on the academy; from here you can walk over to the dramatic chapel (1963) or embark on a driving tour of the expansive grounds.

The entrance is via the North Gate, 14 miles north of Colorado Springs on I-25. During football season, it's worthwhile checking out a game. Cadets do pushups for every point scored!

Air Force Academy breaks ground on new $40 million visitor center

visit colorado springs air force academy

The United States Air Force Academy broke ground Monday on a new, $40 million visitor center. It’s part of a much larger development in northern Colorado Springs that will also include a 375-room hotel and conference center.

The visitor center marks the final of five major civic investment projects in Colorado Springs dubbed the “City for Champions” initiative. The massive public-private partnership also includes the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum , new stadiums for the Switchbacks minor league soccer and Colorado College hockey teams, and a Sports Medicine Center at University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

“Today, we begin the final leg on the journey. It’s difficult to imagine more catalytic and impactful projects with more transformational effect on Colorado Springs than the City for Champions initiative,” said the city’s Mayor John Suthers at Monday’s ground-breaking.

Suthers said he expects the five venues to generate billions of dollars in revenue for Colorado Springs in the coming years.

AIR FORCE ACADEMY VISITOR CENTER GROUNDBREAKING BOYCE

The new visitor center will replace an aging facility located a 10-minute drive past an Air Force security checkpoint installed at the academy following the 9/11 attacks — which caused tourist visitation to the Academy to plummet in the two decades since.

When the new jet-wing inspired glass and steel venue opens just beside Interstate 25, it will be located outside of that security checkpoint.

“As travelers crest that hill from Monument on their way [south] into Colorado Springs, this is going to be a physical, multi-story front door drawing people in and highlighting the country’s premier institution for developing leaders of character,” said Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark.

The 32,000 square foot visitor center will introduce guests to what life is like for cadets and may display aircraft, spacecraft and satellites within its main atrium, according to an Air Force Academy press release. It’s expected to open sometime in 2024.

The Air Force Academy – A “Must See” in Colorado Springs

The Air Force Academy – A “Must See” in Colorado Springs

“Whether you’ve come to Colorado Springs as a visitor, cadet, parent or new member of our staff, one thing is certain—the United States Air Force Academy experience is unlike any other.”

With these words, the United States Air Force Academy advises visitors to its website to tour the campus for themselves, promising them an unforgettable experience if and when they do. For any AXP readers planning to attend next year’s annuitant reunion in Colorado Springs, you may want to take their advice and carve some time out of your schedule to mosey over to the academy for a look-see of your own. Like millions of curious people who have done the same over the years, you’ll be glad you did.

[Reunion organizers are working with Grey Line Tours to provide a unique, guided tour of the Air Force Academy. More details to follow.]

While the American military has been flying airplanes for over a century, historically speaking, the U.S. Air Force was not “born” until January 1947. Prior to that, it had been a part of the U.S. Army. During World War I it functioned as an arm of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, partly and logically in recognition of one of the earliest military uses of aircraft—for air reconnaissance of enemy forces. Between 1926 and 1941, it was known as the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC), its first step toward eventual independence. In 1941 it became the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), a move that included the granting of still greater autonomy. Only in 1948, however, did it become the separate, distinct service within the U.S. military that we know today as the U.S. Air Force (USAF). W. Stuart Symington was named Secretary of the Air Force and Gen. Carl A. Spaatz was named the U.S. Air Force ’s first Chief of Staff that year.

Similar in its comparative youth to its parent service, the U.S. Air Force Academy is the newest of America’s service academies. Its relatively recent birth is evident in the stunning mid-century architecture of its buildings. One would never think of referring to the USAFA campus as “the Halls of Ivy” like in the old college song. Architecturally and visually, one might apply that term to the campuses of the eight Ivy League schools, or to the service campuses at West Point (founded in 1802) and Annapolis (founded in 1845), but surely not to the service academy in question at Colorado Springs (founded in 1954). Designed by the renowned architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill (SOM), the buildings of the Air Force Academy look and feel more like the Halls of Today and Tomorrow. In recognition of its unique character and place in history, in 2004, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the academy was granted national historic landmark status. Its design was indeed a landmark moment in the history of American architecture, setting a high standard for subsequent modernist campus design while breaking decisively from the ivy-clad traditions of the past. The Air Force’s current slogan is “Aim High.” They certainly aimed high with the design of their academy.

Competition among cities in the early ’50s to be chosen as the site for the proposed academy was fierce. Fortunately for the City of Colorado Springs and the State of Colorado, President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s wife, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, though born in Boone, Iowa, grew up in Colorado Springs and Denver, and the First Couple had vacationed there numerous times. Their affection for the Centennial State played a key role in the decision of the Military Affairs Committee—the body responsible for evaluating location options—to build at Colorado Springs. A visit to the USAFA’s remarkable campus with all of its manifest beauty confirms the aesthetic wisdom of their decision.

The first question one must ask themselves upon arriving on campus is, “Where do I begin?” The obvious choice for a starting point is the Barry Goldwater Air Force Academy Visitor Center. There one will find information on Academy history, cadet life, campus attractions, and other matters associated with the USAFA. There, also, one can pick up a self-guided tour map at the information desk.

Before embarking from the Visitor Center on a tour, visitors are encouraged to take in the movie highlighting the Academy experience shown throughout the day in the center’s theater. Visiting the center’s 5,652-square-foot exhibit area is perfect preparation for the campus journey that follows.

One of the first "must see” points of interest to visit is the Cadet Chapel, a third-of-a-mile walk from the Visitor Center along a paved nature trail. Designed as a symbol of inclusiveness, within its angular walls, the all-faith Cadet Chapel is home to individual chapels for Protestant and Catholic Christians and for other faiths as well. Its soaring design reaching skyward towards the heavens is an inspiration to all who view it, from afar and from within.

An interesting event, repeated three times a week during the academic year from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, weather permitting, is the Cadet Lunch Formation when the cadet wing marches to lunch. This formation is scheduled three days each week from 11:30 am-12:00 pm from mid-August through mid-May.

Stops at the various halls, the Honor Court, the Field House, and the Falcon Athletic Center provides insights into aspects of life at the Academy as cadets prepare for careers in the Air Force. Most of those halls bear the names of legendary figures from the rich histories of American military aviation and the Academy itself:

  • Arnold Hall , the cadet social center, is named after Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, commanding general of the Army Air Forces during World War II.
  • Harmon Hall , the Academy administrative center, is named after Lt. Gen. Hubert R. Harmon, the first superintendent of the Academy.
  • McDermott Library , home to nearly 2 million items, is named after Brig. Gen. Robert F. McDermott, former dean of the Academy’s faculty.
  • Fairchild Hall and Fairchild Annex , home to academic classrooms, is named after Gen. Muir S. Fairchild, first commander of Air University, predecessor to the Academy.
  • Vandenberg and Sijan Halls , the cadet dormitories are named after Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the second Air Force chief of staff, and Capt. Lance P. Sijan, the only Academy graduate to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
  • Mitchell Hall , the cadet dining hall, is named in honor of Brig. Gen. William “Billy” Mitchell, pioneering proponent and strategist for the use of military air power.
  • Barry Goldwater Air Force Academy Visitor Center , the recommended starting point for your tour of the USAFA campus, is named after Senator Barry Goldwater, pilot for the Army Air Forces during World War II, five-time senator from Arizona, one-time presidential candidate, and fierce advocate of the Air Force and the creation of the Academy.

During visiting hours only (9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. daily), visitors lacking military or government ID cards are free to explore two memorable trails contained entirely within campus grounds. One, the Stanley Canyon Trail, is 5.8 miles long, features a lake, and is rated as difficult. The other, the Falcon Hiking Trail, is a singletrack loop bike trail that winds through academy grounds and features long climbs, thrilling downhills, and gorgeous mountain views. Both trails are controlled by the military and access to them requires proper ID or written permission.

By the time visitors have completed their tour of the academy’s grounds, they have developed a deep and lasting respect for both the academy itself and the Air Force it serves. Your visit to Colorado Springs for next year’s annuitant reunion is your chance to join their ranks.

The U.S. Air Force song begins with the lines, “Off we go into the wild blue yonder / Climbing high into the sun.” A visit to the Academy campus will leave you feeling that you’ve just done the same without having to leave the ground.
