Travel Styles for Turkey

Turkey travel guide some information and tips about turkey, wine regions of turkey, other ways to discover turkey, blog posts about turkey.

Turkey is home to a rich wine culture that dates back nearly 7,000 years. Its wine regions span across the country. From the plains of Cappadocia to the sunny Aegean coast, Turkey’s diverse terrain and different climate across the country enable a range of unique grapes to be grown, which produce wines with various flavors.

AEGEAN COAST

Aegean Region Wine Store, Turkey

The Aegean region is home to some of the most beautiful and productive vineyards in the country. With nearly half of all of the country’s winemakers calling this area home, it is clear that the region boasts conditions that are perfect for wine production. In the west, the Aegean coast benefits from proximity to the sea. It has a Mediterranean climate, while farther inland, altitudes reach up to 2,500 feet in a more continental climate. The result is that the region produces a wide variety of wines, from light and refreshing whites to full-bodied reds. Wine tours in the Aegean region offer delicious, high-quality, award-winning wines; peaceful vineyard walks; top-notch wineries in small, boutique establishments; and gourmet restaurants presenting unique tastes. Notable indigenous grapes are Bornova Misketi, Sultaniye, and Boğazkere.

MARMARA REGION

Vinery in the Marmara Region, Turkey

The Marmara region is located in northwestern Turkey. Its varied climate across its coastal and inland areas with cooler winters allows producers to make a wide range of wines, from bright whites to rich reds. Boutique wine producers are located in four main areas: Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, Şarköy, and Gelibolu. Besides the foreign varieties grown here, notable local varieties include Papazkarası, Kalecik Karası, and Adakarası.

Cappadocia Wine Panoramic, Turkey

Located in the heart of Turkey’s Anatolia region, Cappadocia is famous for its lunar-like landscapes and centuries-old winemaking tradition. This region owes its famous vineyards to its unique soil blended with natural volcanic tuff. This unique soil gives a rich, full taste to local grapes such as Öküzgözü, Kalecik Karası, Boğazkere, Narince, and Emir, as well as to the foreign ones grown here, and strong and complex flavor profiles to wines produced. Wine tours in Cappadocia offer a wonderful combination of high-quality wine tasting at boutique wineries and visiting one of Turkey’s most famous UNESCO Heritage Sites.

EASTERN & SOUTHEAST TURKEY

Okuzgozu Wines East Turkey

This region boasts some of the country’s best red wine grapes. Best Öküzgözü grapes are grown in the high altitude plateaus of the Elazig region. Boğazkere grows on the dry soil of the Diyarbakir area between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Both varieties, as well as their combinations, produce some of the best wines in Turkey.

Sharing my 20 years of experience enjoying delightful and undiscovered Turkish Wines. Follow along to see the people, places, grapes and wines. - Chris

Wine Ratings

Since 2001, I've been actively drinking, rating and learning about Turkey's growing wine industry. Being the birthplace of wine thousands of years ago, there is a rich, diverse and compelling viticulture here. I literally travel Turkey for weeks each year and have tasted thousands of wines. I've also rated nearly 400 wines the last 3 years and want to share my thoughts. 1 page per wine and new ones added all the time.

Turkish Grape Varieties

The vast, verdant landscape of Asia Minor has been the home to vineyards for literally more than 3000 years. There are unique 'terriors' here and relatedly more than 100 grape varieties unique from anything else in the world.  From the Bogazkere to the Bornova Misket, from the mountain valleys in the east to the islands of the Ageaen sea there is unbelievable diversity here of land, weather, soil and grape. Look here for Turkish specific grapes and wines.

Turkish Wineries

There are more than 300 wineries in the country. Close to 80 of these producers regularly host guests to visit the vineyard, taste their products, eat at their restaurants, and stay at their hotels. These pages will introduce you and link you to these marvelous and gracious people and their vineyards. Turkish wine is delicious, the place are beautiful, but the people of Turkey is what adds the unique, memorable and most valuable dimensions.

Turkish Wine Routes

The dozens of wineries in Turkey open to visit are easily connected in 2 formal and 7 total informal wine routes. Benefit from my experience and advice to learn the best way to visit these places in connection with your trip to Turkey. From wine day trips from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Ephesus, Bodrum, Cappadocia or Antalya, to longer 5 day or even 2 week long trips, Turkey's vineyards are mostly undiscovered. Let's discover them together.

Wine & Vineyard Tours in Turkey

Last Updated on September 8, 2022

The Turkish land of Asia minor has always been a prime wine-growing region . It is undoubtedly one of the lands where winemaking originated, and it boasts more than 600 grape varieties native to its soil. Within the many wine-growing regions, 7 main regions offer the best wine & vineyard tours in Turkey. Because of the diversity and size of Turkey’s vineyard regions, I recommend you consider joining a private wine tour to allow you the best opportunity, read why here .

Wine-Growing Regions of Turkey

The land of Turkey is a high plateau bound by seas on 3 sides (Black, Marmara, Aegean, & Mediterranean seas) with mountains and river valleys interspersed making for unbelievably diverse vineyards and wine-growing climates .

Prime vineyard regions for making Turkish wines include the coasts of the Sea of Marmara , (Thrace), the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, Cappadocia in Central Anatolia , and the eastern provinces of Elazığ and Diyarbakır .

This terroir gives rise to 17 distinct wine-growing regions: Thrace, Canakkale Peninsula, Bozcaada and Aegean Islands, North Aegean Hinterlands, Urla Peninsula, Western Meander River Valley, Bodrum hills, Datca Peninsula, Eastern Meander River Valley, Cal Valley, Antalya/Elmali Highlands, Eastern Mediterranean coast, Southeast, Elazig region, Cappadocia, Tokat, and Ankara region. These areas don’t always have distinct demarkations, but the geography, weather , access, and characteristics vary enough to distinguish each one.

Within all 17 regions, Wine & Vineyard Tours tend to group into 7 primary Vineyard Tour regions . The regions are followed by going in a counterclockwise direction starting at Istanbul and following the Sea of Marmara coast westward, before going south along the Aegean coast and then East along the Mediterranean coast before closing the loop from the Southeast of Turkey through the Anatolian plain. The 7 Regions are Thrace , Urla , Bodrum , Denizli , Antalya , Southeast Turkey , and Cappadocia .

Each of the 6 regions has distinct grape varieties and recommended wineries and wines . We can help you figure out which regions are accessible and who to work with on your tour of Turkey - as day trips are possible from all of the main touristic regions.

Here are the 7 regions of Turkey wine tasting and vineyard tours:

Istanbul Wine Tours & Tastings

Sojourn Turkey Custom Travel , a TurkeyTravelPlanner.com partner, offers day trips and multiple-day Turkey wine tasting and vineyard tours, as well as private and small-group tastings.

While no wineries per se are located in Istanbul there are a number of restaurants and wine shops where you can buy and try local wines. There are none located in the main tourist district of Sultanahmet , but you can find them clustered in the Galata / Istiklal areas in the district of Beyoğlu .

Here’s a few to look for: Beyoğlu Şaraphanesi, FOXY Karakoy and FOXY Nisantasi, Sensus Wine Boutique, Pano Wine Bar. Most of these have lots of excellent Turkish wine on offer, though no traditional tastings.

Thrace Wine Tours & Tastings

Being the closest true wine region to Istanbul, this was the first and most developed route near Tekirdağ , 145 km (90 miles, 2 hours) west of Istanbul . The wineries along this route include some with hotels (Arcadia, Barbare, Caeli, Bengodi, Vino Dessera) and range from those on the Standja Massif (the southern end of the Balkan plains) to those along the hills rising up from the Marmara Sea to the windswept Çanakkale Peninsula.

The closest locations are 1.5 hours away and some of Turkey’s most distinguished winemakers are here (Camlija, Gurbuz, Chateau Nuzun), but some of those located near Eceabat are almost 3 hours, so an easy 2-day trip but not close enough for day tours.  I recommend 2-3 days as the hotels and vineyards are magical early in the morning and at sunset. The restaurants (of which all the tasting areas typically have) tend to be very, very good.

Other notable restaurants/ vineyards are Vino Dessera and Barel Bağevi.

Urla Wine Tours & Tastings

Urla is the windswept peninsula heading westward from Izmir and Izmir Airport towards Çeşme on the far west coast of Turkey. Urla is one of many old Greek villages that has remarkable white Aegean architecture and has been renewed by the nouveau riche of Izmir in the last 2 decades. The reason for its popularity is the vineyards and the Urla Wine Route ( Urla Bağ Yolu ) with 10 wineries within a 30-minute drive.

All of these do wine tastings and have food - and they can be packed on weekends, so best to visit earlier in the day and on weekends.  From east to west the Wineries are Arda, MMG, Limantepe, Urlice, USCA, Cakir, Hus, Urla, Mozaik, Ikidenizarasi, Perdix.

This region is a playground of wineries, restaurants, old towns, beaches and delightful viewpoints. I certainly recommend a few days to enjoy the slow-paced, slow food, slow wine culture that has grown up here.

3 other wineries to note are Isabey (very near the Izmir Airport and worth a visit), LA Vineyards along the superhighway towards Ephesus - an amazing facility, restaurant and some unique wine varietals, and 7 Bilgeler in the hills above Ephesus (with some of the best-made wine in Turkey).

Bodrum Wine Tours & Tastings

This region being the furthers west and south is oft-visited by travellers and there are wineries well located near the highway from the airport to the city of Bodrum , there are additionally 2-3 wineries across the sea on the Datça peninsula accessible by a lovely 1-hour car ferry– a journey well worth making.

This region is the hottest and most extreme so grape varieties are bold and likened to Sicily and other warmer southern European countries. Vineyards, from north to south, are Mor Salkim, Karnas, Garova, & Bodrum Winery. The few located on Datça peninsula that are well worth a visit are Knidos Vineyard and Datça Vineyards. If you’re really adventurous, the Asarcık Vineyards are further afield - most often visited near Marmaris by yachters.

Denizli / Meander Valley Wine Tours & Tastings

Most of the grapes grown in Turkey come from the verdant valley running east to west from ancient Colossi near Denizli all the way to ancient Miletus on the west coast. This is the Meander River ( Büyük Menderes ) - from which our word ‘meander’ rises - a lazy river that meanders slowly to the sea. The valley actually splits and heads north and south - but the wine region is found inland with warm summers and cold winters.

These vineyards are located roughly close to Pamukkale . From the Yanık Ülke (Burnt Earth) vineyards in Kula to the kind Sobran Vineyards in ancient Philadelphia to the Cal Valley NE of Pamukkale with Lermonos, Kuzubağ, and Hanchalar. This is one of the oldest vineyard regions but only recently has added wine-tasting restaurants and facilities.

Antalya Wine Tours & Tastings

As one of the most visited cities in the world - there are excellent restaurants in town where you can try local wine varieties ( Seraser , Pia, Vanilla) but the treat here is to drive north to Elmalı to see the lovely Likya Vineyards set on a high plain 1.5 hours away. This is a unique and beautiful land. Organized tours can also arrange to visit a new, impressive upstart winery Sagavin, which produces wine nearer to Antalya , but in industrial facilities. Both of these wineries can be interspersed with amazing sites such as Termessos , Karain Cave , and other museum visits .

Cappadocia Wine Tours & Tastings

Turasan Winery has a sales shop with a wine-tasting bar at its bottling facility in Ürgüp in the Cappadocia region. It’s open seven days a week for tastings and purchases.

Kocabağ is one of the gems - a local family business that succeeded at making excellent wines and has now become quite large. They have 2 wine tasting locations near Uçhisar and have some of the best Boğazkere/Öküzgözü grapes and wines.

Also, if you stay at the Argos Winery - they work with one of Turkey’s largest wineries to produce their own series of wines and have an amazing mahzen (wine cellar) and wine tasting room cut into their rock caves.  Certainly worth a visit if you are their guest.

Not just fairy chimneys and balloons

Cappadocia is world-famous for its spectacular hot air balloons rides, the cave dwellings of Troglodytes, Whirling Dervishes and the rock churches of the early Christian refugees. But Cappadocia wine tours? A hot air balloon flight is an amazing way to view an area that has produced wine for millennia.

Most people will want to combine Cappadocia with a visit to the wineries in the Thrace wine region from Istanbul . A combo of Turkey wine regions like this will show you contrasting regions, grapes and wineries which prove to be very interesting, with some great wines produced between them.

Visit kocabag winery while in Cappadocia

What do our Cappadocia wine tours involve?

We would fly you to Kayseri airport from Istanbul and pick you up for the hour drive to Goreme town. Goreme is a very special place where hotels are literally built into the fairy chimney formations that surround you. If you get up early enough hot air balloon fill the skies.

Goreme is a very laid-back place and a real delight to spend time chilling in, sipping some Turkish wine (and tea of course). We will take you out to visit two or three local wineries which are a little more rustic than those you will see from Istanbul, and introduce you to a couple of new local varieties.

Emir, for example, is a grape which only grows in the Cappadocia region. Emir creates a white which is a perfect match for sushi or salmon and offers green apple aromas and flavors with high minerality. We get to try this wine at the Turasan winery in Urgup village where the team is extremely friendly but certainly less polished than you will find in Napa or Bordeaux, which is part of the charm we feel.

Occasionally there might be tour bus stop by, if we see one there when we arrive we will take you to see fantastic rock formations or the cave churches and then go back after they leave, this flexibility is one of the great advantages of being on a private tour.

We will enjoy a tour of the production area and down in the cellar taking a look at the French oak barrels that Turasan has down there. The guys that show us around do not have great English but you do have a guide to help with translation, as we mentioned we feel that it is part of the attraction that many places we visit are not super-slick, have a sense of humor and are slightly random, but they certainly know what they are talking about.

Its not flashy but its a great experience - Turasan winery in Cappadocia

At Turasan we will enjoy a tasting of several of the wines including Narice, Emir, Kalesic Karasi, and Bogazkere. We will have the chance to open an older bottle from the dusty cobwebs of the cellar if we are lucky and enjoy the suspense of tasting what comes out. Turkish wine will delight your palate and you are trying wines that are not common, or even unknown in your home country.

Another winery we visit is Kocabag . The winery and swathe of vineyards owned by this company are located in Gulsehir some 40 km or so from the tasting room in Uchisar. We will visit both locations plus we will try to arrange a visit to vineyards in Kirsehir, one of seven vineyard plots owned by Kavaklidere, the very well established and most famous of Turkish wine producers.

Okuz Gozu is a native Turkish grape which is named after Bulls Eyes

The Kocabag tasting room and Uchisar visit are low-key (very different from what you might have in Napa or La Rioja) which, apart from trying and maybe buying wine, provides the chance to wander this picturesque little village dominated by its castle. We will leave you some free time to wander this village and enjoy the old, winding streets around the castle.

Apart from your wine time, we will suggest several non-wine activities for your time in Cappadocia. The hot air balloon flight is something you should definitely do, it requires a very early start but the payoff is amazing. Also one of your evenings we recommend two versions of Turkish music and dancing spectacles. One of these experiences is very much more spiritual and solemn than the other, which is more fun and light-hearted. Ask us about the Whirling Dervish and “Turkish night” with dinner options, we can explain our take on them.

Best places to go wine tasting in Istanbul

Wine Tasting in Istanbul

From cooking classes to street food and restaurants with excellent Turkish cuisine and decadent wines to try, there are many culinary delights on offer in Istanbul. You will not regret adding a wine-tasting tour to your Istanbul plans, and these are some of the best wine-tasting options you can access during your stay.

Full-Day Wine Tours

A full-day winery tour is often the best way to experience the wineries in or near Istanbul. You will be treated to a visit to many of the best wineries in the Kirklareli wine region, and you will get to see lovely areas of Thrace. There are also stops to look at the Strandja Mountains, which are breathtaking. Many of the wineries you will have paid to see when you take a full-day tour will offer you food and unlimited tastings at each stop, making this kind of tour a great value.

Best of all, you can be picked up at various locations, and you will not have to worry about transportation as you head to each of the different wine producers. This is an excellent way to leave the planning up to the experts and to enjoy Istanbul as well as the region.

Various pickup points and destinations in and around Istanbul.

Bosphorus Dinner Cruise Wine Tastings

If you have ever wanted to sail on the Bosphorus while enjoying a delicious meal and wine tastings of local wines, you are in luck! Many outfits offer dinner cruises in this region that are affordable and come with a show too! These floating meal and wine tasting events are an ideal way to see another side of Istanbul and to enjoy some culture that you might not otherwise have the chance to engage with.

The service on these cruises is excellent, and there are usually allergy-friendly meal options as well that you can enjoy. While a bit different than a private tour or typical wine tasting, this is still a great way to appreciate the area around this ancient city and the Turkish wine that it is famous for.

Küçük Ayasofya Mahallesi, Nakilbent Sk. No:29, 34122 Fatih/İstanbul, Turkey; plus others.

Istanbul wine bars

This is a special wine tasting opportunity if you have a full day to spare. To visit this winemaker, you will need to head to Avşa Island in the Marmara Sea, and you will be treated to some of the best cabernet sauvignon you have ever had. The winery is in such a unique location that you will probably want to enjoy the views and the scenery, as well as the wines you can try here. They cultivate a total of 17 different grapes, so the selection is unparalleled, and the wine cellar is a treat to visit.

This island vineyard is perched atop the hills near the sea, and the island itself is a common vacation destination for locals. You can choose to get a hotel room and stay here overnight when you come to visit the island's own winery. This is a great opportunity to get a private tour of a boutique winery and to try wine vintages that are not offered in other locations. The island has its own microclimate resulting in a truly unique wine experience. Being able to stay on the island for a night just adds to the magic of the trip.

Acıbadem, Etap İş Merkezi, Lavanta Sk. No:2 D:C Blok D, 34718 Kadıköy/İstanbul, Turkey

La Cave Sarap

Located on one of Istanbul's most famous walking streets, this wine house, which is essentially a wine bar, is an ideal place to drop in during your visit to try some lovely local wines. This is a street within the heart of the city that never seems to sleep, and you can easily head here in between (or after) checking out the main tourist attractions. Pick up some Turkish delight while you're in this central area, and while it may not pair very well with the wine, it's an Istanbul food you absolutely have to try.

The prices at this location are excellent, so sampling a bunch of Turkish wine won't break the bank. La Cave Sarap is a small location, and you'll want to dine elsewhere, but the wine list and great service make this a worthy stop on any Istanbul wine tasting list.

Kılıçali Paşa, Sıraselviler Cd. No:109, 34433 Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Turkey

Tekirdag Wine Tasting Tour from Istanbul

If you want to head to the Tekirdag region to try some wines, you will want to pick this wine tour. You will be picked up at your hotel and taken to Chateau Kalpak for your first stop of the day to try some of the most famous Turkish wine in the region and to enjoy a private wine-making tour at this famous winery. Then you will head to Barbare Vineyard for lunch and another wine-tasting adventure in the beauty of this part of the region. You can walk through the vault and storehouses at Barbare Vineyard as well, which is always fun.

The day ends with a stop at Chateau Nuzun winery to learn about organic winemaking and to try everything from a sauvignon blanc to a cabernet sauvignon and other local Turkish wine favorites. This is a tour that offers great value for your money and takes the hassle out of planning the journey yourself.

Pickup from your hotel; various wineries in the Tekirdag region.

Best wine bars in Istanbul

Pano Wine Bar

This lovely little wine bar offers you access to a wide array of Turkish wines, and you can get delicious Italian cuisine here as well. Aside from wine, try the Turkish coffee here. It's another rite of passage on the drink scene in Istanbul. Pano Wine Bar is a great place to enjoy a few different varieties of sauvignon blanc or to order from the more unique wine list to try wines not sold in other regions of the world.

You can stop in here for a late lunch or dinner as well, so make sure that you consider staying long enough to eat no matter when you drop by. With delicious food and an enviable selection of wines, this is the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely meal in Istanbul.

Hüseyinağa, Hamalbaşı Cd. No:12, 34435 Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Turkey

Hazzo Pulo Restaurant ve Şarap Evi

This cozy little wine bar and restaurant offers a wide array of wines that you can choose to pair with a meal or that you can try with a simple plate of olives, cheese, and crackers. You will love the appearance and atmosphere of this charming bar in the heart of the old city, and you will get excellent service when you choose this wine-tasting spot. This is a small location, so be sure to make a reservation before you arrive so that you can be sure to get a table.

The tables are tiny, so you might not be able to sit down at a single table with a large group. However, if your group doesn't mind being split up, you will not regret coming here for a delicious meal and some even better wine.

Evliya Çelebi, Galatasaray, Meşrutiyet Cd. No:31/B, 34430 Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Turkey

Bordo Wine Bar

Bordo Wine Bar is a great place to drop in for a tasting if you have been out and about all day and are ready for a little afternoon break and some food. You will be treated to excellent service here, and the wine list is extensive. There are not as many food options compared to other Istanbul wine bars, but the wine list more than makes up for this lack of choice.

Order a wine flight to try out a bunch of different wines when you visit. This is one of the best places to try out a wide range of different producers' and wine makers' products. Bordo showcases the wide range of grapes and, therefore, wines available in this region.

Caferağa, Sakız Gülü Sk. No:7, 34711 Kadıköy/İstanbul, Turkey

Istanbul wine tasting

Solera Winery Wine Bar

This winery's tasting location in the heart of Istanbul, just off the busy İstiklal Avenue, offers you access to a wide array of different Turkish wines, and you will be able to pair your tasting with excellent food options as well. The atmosphere is comfortable and casual, and the staff know what they are talking about. This is a great place to head to if you are not sure which kinds of wine you want to try because this place offers a good selection.

The atmosphere at Solera Winery Wine Bar is always welcoming, and they put a lot of care into the meals and snacks they serve. Menu items vary with the seasons to ensure you get the tastiest and freshest food.

Tomtom, Yeni Çarşı Cd. No:44, 34433 Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Turkey
