20th anniversary pressing.  You might've listened to  Moon Safari back when it first came out, but it's definitely worth a revisit. I know my ears were a little more biased a couple decades ago and weren't really in tune with this sound, but nowadays I'm pretty sure we're all much more familiar with the "French Style" and can really appreciate what these dudes were doing. Nicolas and JB (aka AIR ) were definitely ahead of their time, combining elements from Burt Bacharach and Serge Gainsbourg , ambient, lounge, new wave, beats and lots of synthesizers, into one unique musical style paving the way for similar-minded artists like Sebastien Tellier . Just take a listen the masterfully crafted chill out moods -"La Femme D'Argent," "Talisman," "All I Need," and "Sexy Boy," "Le Voyage De Penelope," and "Remember." The whole album has aged amazingly well and goes down real easy - it's that smooth. Recommended.

In its rambling Rhodes piano riffs and flickers of smooth bass, Moon Safari contains a universe. It is a beginning: The story of two young people finally making the art they knew they were capable of making, the story of using what you have to create what can best be described as a mood. A sensation, a prick on the back of your neck, a spit exchange with a stranger in a smoky bar.

Sophie Frances Kemp is a Brooklyn-based writer, originally from Schenectady, New York. Her work has previously appeared in American Vogue, Pitchfork, GARAGE and NPR.

1998 debut album from the French postmodernist duo. Air raid every aspect of retro pop music, from the sublime to the ridiculous, in fashioning their sonic bricolage. Everything from Krautrock-inspired electronics to 1960s lounge music is incorporated into the work of Nicolas Godin and J.B. Dunckel. Moon Safari earned massive critical plaudits and put the duo at the forefront of modern, electronic-oriented pop. All tracks were penned by the duo with two tracks – “All I Need” and “You Make It Easy” – featuring lyrics penned by Beth Hirsch and addition input from Patrick Woodcock on ‘Ce Matin La’ and Jean-Jacques Perrey on ‘Remember’.

Air announce 25th anniversary vinyl reissue of ‘Moon Safari’

It follows a 20th anniversary celebration of the duo's ’10 000Hz Legend’ LP in 2021

Air have announced a 25th anniversary vinyl reissue of their classic debut album ‘Moon Safari’.

The French duo – comprised of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel – released their debut album in 1998.

After celebrating 20 years of its 2001 follow-up ’10 000Hz Legend’ with a reissue in 2021, ‘Moon Safari’ will now be reissued on vinyl via Vinyl Me Please to celebrate its 25th birthday.

The reissue will land on February 1 and be pressed on an exclusive 180gram “Sea of Tranquility” coloured vinyl.

It will feature lacquers cut by Marie Pieprrzownik alongside a Listening Notes article by Sophie Frances Kemp and an art print from Mike Mills.

The liner notes for the reissue say of the album: “It feels like a dream sequence. One moment you’re walking through a room drenched in pink light while dressed in a tuxedo, the next you’re diving into the neighbour’s pool butt-naked with your high school crush.

“It’s a mood you want to live inside of forever. It’s a revelation. It’s conversation pit music for a better future.”

Air last studio effort,  ‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ , came out in 2012.

Asked by  NME in 2019 whether there would be another record, the band’s Nicolas Godin said that he was concerned about ruining the band’s “magic” by releasing a “substandard album”.

“If we’re able to find that magic, we’ll go into the studio,” he continued. “But if not, we’ll move aside and let other people make those magic records.”

All tracks were penned by the duo with two tracks – “All I Need” and “You Make It Easy” – featuring lyrics penned by Beth Hirsch and addition input from Patrick Woodcock on ‘Ce Matin La’ and Jean-Jacques Perrey on ‘Remember’.

Air / Moon Safari glow-in-the-dark vinyl

Amazon in the US have a pre-order listing for a ‘Phosphorescent/Glow In The Dark’ vinyl edition of French band Air ‘s debut album  Moon Safari . The release coincides with the 20th anniversary of the 1998 album which delivered three top 30 UK hits in the form of Sexy Boy , Kelly Watch The Stars and All I Need .

It’s not clear at this point if this vinyl is a one-off or whether a wider 20th anniversary reissue campaign is imminent. Either way, this record is great value at only $15 , which equates to around £19  sent to the UK with import duty and (cheapest) shipping included. Even if this title appears in the Britain, is it going to be cheaper than that?

This  ‘Phosphorescent/Glow In The Dark’ vinyl edition of Moon Safari will be released on 6 April 2018.

Air announce ‘Moon Safari’ 25th anniversary deluxe edition

The release will include rare and unreleased tracks, alongside a documentary filmed during Air's first world tour

Air are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their seminal debut album, ‘Moon Safari', with a deluxe edition release. 

Out 8th March via Parlophone/Warner Music, the expaned release will feature two CDs and a Blu-Ray Audio-Video package. 

The reissue will include a Spatial Dolby Atmos audio version of the original album, along with rare or previously unreleased tracks. Additionally, it will include Mike Mills' 1998 documentary Eating, Sleeping, Waiting & Playing , filmed during the band's first worldwide tour, among other bonus content.

Air will kick off their  ‘Moon Safari’ tour across Europe next month. The tour, which will be the first time that the French duo have performed the record in full live, will start on 16th February in Rouen, playing in various cities across Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France, and The Netherlands, before concluding in London’s Coliseum Theatre on 24th March.

Alongside the announcement of the 25th-anniversary deluxe edition, the duo has revealed additional tour dates, which extend into the summer months. These dates include performances on 30th May at London's Royal Albert Hall, Sónar Festival in Barcelona on 14th June, Days Off Festival in Paris on 24th June, Zitadelle Spandau in Berlin on 21st July, and Medastadt Open Air in Vienna on 23rd July. 

Reflecting on the release, Jean-Benoît Dunckel said: “We were a duo doing some electronic thing, dreaming of selling 10,000 copies and being recognised by other musicians as cool. Then suddenly, we met the world.” He went on to describe ‘Moon Safari’ as “a deep, universal spell, full of love and mystery," while fellow co-member, Nicolas Godin, declared it "perfect."

Last year, Air also released a 25th-anniversary vinyl edition of their critically acclaimed debut.

Moon Safari - 10th Anniversary Edition

We all know what horrors illegal downloading has wrought on new releases; one side effect of that erosion involves labels attempting to recoup those losses by re-animating their back catalogues, Mary Shelley style. Before the big swoon, it was tough to justify a reissue without a remaster, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and so lately, we've seen an increasing spate of albums re-released for no other reason than a round-number anniversary. In the cases of your Thriller s and your Pet Sounds , that's a justifiable enough benchmark-- in a way, those reissues provide the platform to talk about us and how much we've changed as much as the music. Something like the new deluxe edition of Air's Moon Safari , though, is a slightly trickier proposition.

For starters: There's the niggling question of whether Air's debut, superb as it is, really merits canonical treatment. As a collection of songs, it's endured well enough over time; after a decade, it still holds up fine. But so have a ton of other similarly acclaimed and successful records from 1998, and it doesn't seem remotely appropriate to roll out the red carpet for those either. As far as modern connect points go, there's nothing really happening musically at the moment that makes Moon Safari suddenly worthy of re-examination. If anything, with its dainty sonics and polite arpeggios, a lot of this record runs counter to the discofied and Balearic dance that's currently in fashion. Even Air would quickly abandon the cultivated library music aesthetic that characterized this record in favor of spindlier, more complicated, more sinister material. So yeah: As a snapshot of a place in time, you could do a lot worse than Moon Safari . But as something to be canonized in a three-disc set? The physics are lost on me. What, aside from the poetry of the number 10, is the exact reason to celebrate it now?

Granted, it probably wasn't Air's idea to do this, and it's certainly not their fault that Moon Safari 's legacy ultimately yielded a long list of bands along the lines of Lemon Jelly, Zero 7, Morcheeba, and Thievery Corporation, so perhaps it's fairer just to concentrate on what this reissue offers rather than the reason for it. The answer there, unfortunately, is: mixed returns. Although a robust collection featuring the original album, a disc of bonuses and B-sides, and a DVD featuring Mike Mills' 1999 tourfilm Eating, Sleeping, Waiting and Playing , this reissue doesn't offer nearly enough in the way of substantive bonus material to warrant its existence, nor does it even select the right material from that era to re-package.

The bonus disc is the biggest indicator of the lack of quality control or thoughtfulness on hand: instead of material from the duo's excellent surrounding EPs, Le Soleil Est Près De Moi and the singles compilation Premiers Symptômes (a lot of which could actually benefit from having a light shone on it), we get five live tracks-- including a horrible, thrashy version of "Kelly Watch the Stars"-- which expose Air's live approach early on as light on musicianship and heavy on grating affectation and kitsch. Of the remaining demos and remixes, only the two-minute long, string-heavy take on "Remember" (itself a resurrected B-side) and a sparse demo of "You Make It Easy" (from when it was an instrumental called "Bossa 96") are remotely illuminating. Everything else just feels incidental and reheated.

Provided you like your filmmaking mannered and slightly cutesy, Mills' documentary remains a worthwhile curiosity, but even still, I can't imagine that anyone who'd be willing to shell out the money for a Moon Safari 10th Anniversary Edition wouldn't be acquainted with it already. Aside from that, you're basically paying for the packaging; in this case, that means a DVD-sized hardcover package with a nice, if slightly unnecessary, lyrics book attached. As a case for Moon Safari as a classic record, it falls a little short. But as a nice keepsake of a lovely record, it could be worse. I guess in the end it's really just a matter of whether you're fanatical enough about this album to buy it again. Virgin's either betting (or hoping) that enough of you are.
