Allianz single trip plans, allianz annual/multi-trip plans, which allianz travel insurance plan is best for me, can you buy allianz travel insurance online, what isn't covered by allianz travel insurance, is allianz travel insurance worth it.

  • Multiple types of insurance available.
  • All plans include access to a 24/7 assistance hotline.

Allianz Travel Insurance is provided by Allianz Global Assistance, an insurer that operates in 35 countries and serves 40 million customers in the U.S. The company offers several types of travel insurance plans depending on your needs.

Travel insurance will help protect you if unexpected events affect your vacation. Whether you’re looking for a comprehensive plan or emergency medical coverage only to supplement the travel insurance you have from your credit cards , Allianz Global Assistance offers plenty of options.

Allianz trip insurance plans fall into two categories: single trip and annual/multi-trip plans. We evaluated several single trip and annual/multi-trip plans to help you figure out which policy makes sense for you.

Depending on what type of coverage you’re looking for, Allianz offers several different travel insurance options. Allianz’s plan choices fall under single trip or annual/multi-trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

Annual/multi-trip plans are designed for those who like to take a lot of little trips throughout the year as well as for business travelers. Because the coverage period is longer, these plans are more expensive.

Some of these plans include medical coverage only while others also provide more comprehensive travel insurance perks. There’s coverage for business equipment as these plans are geared toward work travelers.

Allianz offers five travel insurance plans for single trips, including a plan that's mainly focused on emergency medical coverage.

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan is geared toward domestic travelers who are looking for trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage but don't need post-departure benefits like emergency medical or baggage loss. This plan is Allianz’s most affordable option.

OneTrip Basic, Prime and Premier are three comprehensive travel insurance plans.

OneTrip Basic is the most economical plan and offers trip cancellation, interruption and delay benefits along with emergency medical and baggage loss.

OneTrip Prime provides all the benefits of the Basic plan but with higher limits, a few extra coverage areas and complimentary coverage for children 17 and under when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

OneTrip Premier offers the most coverage, doubling almost every post-departure limit of the Prime plan with more covered cancellation reasons.

If you don't need pre-departure trip cancellation and interruption protections or you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , the standalone OneTrip Emergency Medical plan may be a good choice. The plan mainly provides emergency medical protections along with some baggage loss/delay benefits.

Allianz single-trip plan cost

Here's a look at the cost of an Allianz travel insurance policy for a one-week, $1,500 vacation to Croatia in August 2020 taken by a 30-year-old from Texas.

allianz travel insurance reviews trustpilot

The OneTrip Premier is the most expensive plan and provides the highest level of protection, especially for emergency medical events.

However, if you’re OK with lower limits on emergency medical, a OneTrip Prime or Basic plan could be a more appropriate choice. These costs represent a range of 3.4%-7.5% of the total cost of the trip, which is in line with typical costs of 4%-8%, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association.

Allianz offers four different annual/multi-trip plans.

AllTrips Basic is suitable for those who would like emergency medical coverage while abroad but don't need trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The AllTrips Prime, Executive and Premier plans provide an entire year of comprehensive travel insurance benefits.

The Executive and Premier plans offer various levels of trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The Executive plan is specifically designed for business travelers since it offers protection for business equipment.

Allianz annual/multi-trip plans cost

Let's look at an example of an annual Allianz travel insurance plan that starts in July 2020 for a 50-year-old from Illinois.

allianz travel insurance reviews trustpilot

Coverage under these plans is offered for trips up to 45 days in length.

The AllTrips Executive plan costs significantly more than the other plans; this is mainly due to higher trip cancellation coverage, emergency medical and business equipment protections. The Executive coverage amount for trip cancellation can be increased beyond what is quoted here, driving that plan's price up to as much as $785.

If you’re not concerned with pre-trip cancellation benefits and don’t need the increased level of medical coverage, the Basic plan is the most affordable option.

For trips longer than 45 days, the AllTrips Premier plan might be a better choice as it offers coverage for up to 90 days. Using the same search parameters but with 90 days of coverage per trip, the cost of the annual plan is $475.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Choosing the right plan for your trip involves understanding what type of coverage you will want while you’re abroad.

If you have a premium travel card (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ): These cards often offer some trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, so you may not need a plan that offers all the same coverage. In this case, getting the OneTrip Medical plan might be enough.

If you’re going on a trip and returning home: OneTrip Prime, Basic or Premier are good options to choose from while offering different levels of coverage.

If you’ll be going on multiple and longer trips: the AllTrips Premier plan might be best as it provides insurance benefits for trips up to 90 days in length. The remaining three annual AllTrips plans cover multiple trips, up to 45 days.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate, you don’t have credit card coverage or you didn’t pay for your trip with that credit card: In these instances, it's best to choose a comprehensive plan depending on how much coverage you need and for how long. Consider one of the single trip or multi-trip plans.

Travel insurance plans have a lot of exclusions that you need to pay attention to so you know exactly what type of coverage you’re getting. Here are some general exclusions you can expect:

High-risk activities: Skydiving, bungee jumping, heli-skiing, and other types of high-risk sporting activities that the insurer deems unsafe.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from intoxication, drug use, self-harm and criminal activity.

Specifically designated events: Epidemics, natural disasters and war are specifically mentioned in the policy as exclusions.

It's important to note that exclusions may vary based on the policy and where you live, so it's always best to review the fine print to ensure you’re clear about what is and isn’t covered.

Allianz has been offering insurance for more than 25 years. The company is well established and offers numerous single and annual travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Allianz travel insurance plans offer a wide array of benefits including (but not limited to): coronavirus-related coverage, trip cancellation, interruption, emergency medical coverage and transportation, baggage loss/damage, baggage delay, travel delay, change fee coverage, loyalty program redeposit fees, 24-hour assistance and many more benefits. Each plan is different, so you’ll want to look at the specific plans you’re considering to know exactly which benefits you’ll receive.

No, Allianz doesn't offer the Cancel For Any Reason optional upgrade. Review the policy details of the Allianz plan you’re considering to ensure you’re comfortable with the list of covered reasons. For example, the loss of a job can be considered a covered reason, but wanting to cancel a trip because you’re afraid to travel isn't.

Most often, you will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In other instances (e.g., covered baggage delay), the insurer will pay you a fixed amount per day and you won’t need to submit receipts.

Allianz Global Assistance offers several good travel insurance plans to choose from. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan for a vacation, a single-trip plan is your best bet.

If you’re a frequent traveler or take lots of business trips, a multi-trip plan could be the way to go. If you have a travel credit card, look at what travel insurance benefits you may already have so you don’t duplicate your coverage .

First time filing a claim was easy!

Since COVID, it made sense to purchase travel insurance for vacations like cruises. During our recent cruise we had an itinerary change, missing a port we hoped to visit. The claim process was easy using the app and reimbursement went directly into our account. Being this was our first time filing a claim, we are happy with the process and the insurance product we bought.

We understand how important it is to have peace of mind when traveling, especially during uncertain times. We're glad that the claim process was easy and convenient for you, and that you were reimbursed promptly. Thank you for choosing our insurance product and for taking the time to share your positive feedback. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you again in the future. Thankful for purchasing insurance

We're so thankful that we purchased the travel insurance. Contacted Allianz to start the claim. Allianz was very helpful to let us know what we need to submit or if they needed additional documentation. We provided that and was reimbursed all but one night at the hotel (and we understand that). Thank you very much!

Dear Valued Customer, We appreciate your feedback and are delighted to know you are protected by our travel insurance. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we look forward to serving you again soon. Sincerely, Nolden Social Care USA

Simple and easy process

I purchased travel insurance for an airline ticket - but the event I was attending was canceled. I was able to cancel my flight and received about 2/3 of my ticket cost back in airline credit. I filed my claim with Allianz and had the remaining cost back within a couple days. The process was super simple through the app, I just filled out the form and uploaded my supporting documents. No questions asked, just received a notice that my account was credited.

Dear Valued Customer, Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We are thrilled to hear that you have positive things to say about Allianz Partners. If you are attending another future event, please let us know and we would be happy to provide protection. Sincerely, Stacey Social Care USA

As an aging traveler I will purchase Allianz insurance on all trips in the future.

While I was sad and upset I could not enjoy my travel plans to visit long time friend Allianz came through for me with quick and complete help in obtaining a full refund for the trip I had to cancel due to health issues. Very efficient and timely! I won’t travel without Allianz on any flight in the future.

Dear Jane, Thank you for your kind words and support. We’re grateful to have you as a valued customer. Don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything else we can assist you with. Sincerely, Nolden Social Care USA

Liked the different tiers of coverage

I found the web site very easy to use for purchasing insurance. I also liked the different tiers of available coverage, which allowed me to opt out of coverage for things that I already have coverage for through other means. And the price was right in the average range of 4 - 6% of the total cost of the trip. Would definitely use Allianz again!

Dear Chris, Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience with Allianz. We're delighted to hear that you found our website user-friendly and appreciated the flexibility of our coverage options. It's great to know that you found our pricing competitive as well. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we're thrilled to have met your expectations. We truly value your business and look forward to serving you again in the future. Best regards, Chemia- Social Care, USA

Good communication but claim submission process still

The timeframe from submission to resolution was a little delayed but overall very acceptable. Allianz kept me updated and that was great. The website was a little confusing—it kept saying I needed more information even though claim hadn’t been reviewed yet. My TA suggested I just wait which turned out fine.

Dear Jane, We are grateful that you took the time out to leave us a review! Sincerely, Nolden Social Care USA

Definitely a learning experience.

Got reimbursed eventually but it was not an easy process. Went round and round on what documentation was required and then had to resubmit for additional days. Now that I have a better understanding of how things work Iwill purchase again. I will be taking 2-3 trips per year and will get an annual policy.

Pretty easy and quick

It was pretty easy to gather the information needed for my claim and post it. And I received my refund in 3 days! Giving 4 stars because I didn’t know until after I started the application that I needed a letter from my physician. I tried to save my info, but had to start over anyway. For medical claims, please let people know before they start posting info that they need this letter!

I have used Allianz in other trips. I've always been quite pleased. Unfortunately, this time I had to cancel my travels by my doctor's order. Hopefully, I will be free to travel in October or November.

Canceled Vegas trip.

Phone representatives were helpful and knowledgeable. Don’t usually get insurance. Was glad I did this time as we had to cancel our Vegas trip due to health reasons. Money sent to my bank account in a timely manner.

Fast and reliable

Allianz is a life saver if you have the unexpected happen on your travels. No one wants to think about injuries and hospitals when on vacation. Allianz helped take the stress off a really hard time. Highly recommend!

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience and highly recommending our services. We truly appreciate your trust in Allianz. Best regards, Chemia- Social Care, USA

Fast refund

My case was pretty straight forward -- had to go to the ER for one and a half days starting on the day of our flight, which we obviously cancelled. It was easy to submit the documents and we were fully reimbursed a few days later, faster than I expected. It helped that I had called Allianz before I even cancelled the flight so I knew what kind of documentation I would need from the hospital. Also, I submitted documentation for both of us being present in the ER (even though only one of us was the patient) so both of our fares would be reimbursed.

Dear Graham, It makes us incredibly happy to know that we were able to help you. We'll continue working hard to provide you with an excellent experience. Sincerely, Nolden Social Care USA

“Bad break” still ends well

Due to a left foot fracture just weeks before our planned trip to Savannah, GA, we couldn’t reasonably do the kind of on-foot travel adventure we planned. Although extremely disappointed about my foot injury, our Allianz insurance made the pain less problematic. The insurance ensured that with time and proper healing, we have the funds to reschedule the trip for another time when I’m healthy. Easy procedures to follow for our request; hassle free and professional service. Thank you!!

I don't have a lot of experience here

I don't have a lot of experience here, filing only one other claim with decades of travel. Allianz was far better than the other travel insurance company we dealt with. On location support in Mexico was a 3; didn't seem to have local knowledge to fully and conveniently support, causing me worries. Could also have communicated more. Claim process was a 5, both efficient and fair.

We bought travel insurance for our upcoming European trip. We answered that we were going to Portugal, Spain and France for 2 months. My husband and I contracted a pulmonary infection while staying in Tarragon Spain. Upon my return to the States, I provided all the necessary documents asked by Global Allianz. I was then asked for more documents. Train tickets , rental. I uploaded again the documents. I was again asked for more documents such as E tickets , and more. Our claim is still being reviewed. This insurance plays every games in order to discourage you from filing your claims. I am ready to file a federal insurance complaint against them.

As this is our first time that we…

As this is our first time that we needed to submit a medical claim, the process was fairly easy. It was easy to upload any needed documents and complete the claim form via our computer. The response was quick, easy to understand the claim results, as well as reasons for any part of our claim that could not be honored.

The bargain Price that was not.…

The bargain Price listed escalated by 1/2 with stories of better accommodations, better flights, less waiting, better towns, that prices went up and the like. etc. etc. The salespeople very nice but aggressive wanting one to decide right away as the promotion will expire or be full and missed this opportunity.

This is our opinion and experience

This is our opinion and experience: Don’t bother getting it. It’s a complete waste of money and time. You won’t get anywhere with this supposed airline travel protection service. Customer service is the worse. Their customer service team is unable to provide or explain coverage clearly. And when you’re finally transferred over to their supervisor (He’s) annoyed by your questions that you can clearly sense (He’s) not there to assist you at all in understanding how their policy works and how it may be used effectively and efficiently. (He’s) just waiting for you to hang up. It’s a complete scam and fraud!

Dear Roxana, We sincerely apologize for the frustrating experience you had with our airline travel protection service and customer service. We understand your disappointment and take your concerns very seriously. Our goal is to provide our customers with clear and comprehensive coverage, and we regret that we fell short in this instance. We are actively working to improve our customer service processes and ensure that our team is well-equipped to assist you effectively. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us identify areas for improvement, and we will use it to enhance our services. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Sincerely, Kris Social Care USA

Piece of mine will pay for

They kept me up to date in my claim…

They kept me up to date in my claim progress. My refund arrived about a month after I filed.

Date of experience : July 28, 2022

Airline ticket refund due to Covid.

Great company to do business with, they did exactly what they said they would. Processing time was slow but they finally got everything resolved.

Your company is the worst we have EVER…

Your company is the worst we have EVER dealt with. I think you you are corrupt, and play unbelievable games in order to not pay reasonable claims. Five months of frustrating letters, unreasonable requests, and outrageous phone calls FINALLY GOT RESULTS. BS…we were ready to call the state Insurance Department, and get an attorney. You deserve to be shut down and we will NEVER use your “services” again…you SUCK.

Well I did get money out of this…

Well I did get money out of this policy. But I feel that they gave me the absolute minimum they could get away with. They didn't ask me about my missed flights or any other expenditures that were going to have to be encumbered because of the train being 9+ hrs late. I kinda got a here's $200 count your stars lucky you get that.

I love the prompt response

I love the prompt response. Process was smooth and granted. 😁

Reasonably easy to file a claim and…

Reasonably easy to file a claim and reach by phone.

Still waiting for settlement!

In February we had a medical issue while on vacation. After filing the requested documentation we received settlement for "Trip Interruption" expenses but have yet to receive settlement for "Medical Expenses." The status has indicated under review pending added documentation. After contacting the company several times to clarify what added bills are required we have gotten the same response that they have what they need. We have waited six months at this point and am perplex at what the problem truly is.

The purchased insurance was worth the extra protection

At the airport I called and told them my situation. The representative took down my information about my claim and also told me to file a claim online as well.I did what I was told to do and everything worked out fine for me.

Unnecessary Aggravation

Glad that my money was refunded but was it really necessary to ask for my father’s death certificate, I think it was a bit much. Would I not have gotten my money back if I got sick? Would you need a doctor’s note. The insurance served its purpose but was aggravating having to deal with this matter while grieving a loved ones death.

I purchased Allianz protection for a concert

I purchased Allianz protection for Corinne Bailey Rae concert tickets without expecting to need it. However, due to a change in my husband’s work schedule we did. After providing a few documents a check was mailed to me within the timeframe specified. I also appreciate the company’s transparency (you knew in advance what is covered and required to receive a refund). The updates provided via email and their app were also extremely helpful. I recommend purchasing protection through Allianz especially when making a substantial purchase that would otherwise not be refunded.

I requested a refund for my cruise do…

I requested a refund for my cruise do to medical issues. I faxed the requested paperwork to the number provided May 24th. After 2 weeks I hadn’t heard anything so I called. They said they never received it and I would have to resend. I then resent it via email which again they said they never received it so I resent it again. I kept getting emails that said it would not go through. After 2 months I discovered that the email address on your paperwork was incorrect. It showed a capital I instead of a lower case. I then mailed it via USPS as well. Very frustrating

FIRST CLASS SERVICE AND CUSTOMER CARE

Annual package a great deal

I bought th Annual package and had to make use of it almost right away when my luggage was late by three days. I had to buy clothes and toiletries and I made my claim. It was efficiently dealt with and the full claim was paid and put directly into my account. I had 20 plus people with me 9 of them had Allianz and every claim was paid. I am quite happy with this service.

Got sick , coulnt travel with doctors orders. paid quickly. will use again.

Disappointed

No email, no reaction after the update. No benefit even now.

Cancellation due to COVID positive .My family and I had to cancel our…

My family and I had to cancel our travel plans due to all 4 of us testing COVID positive, and the hotel charged us a very stiff penalty, due to a last minute cancellation. Allianz Global took care of us and approved the losses incurred. I received the funds promptly to my bank account. Thank you so much, I will definitely purchase another policy with the. In the future. They are awesome, thanks again!

Doctor statement requirement

We had trip interruption with an ER visit. The claim required a doctors statement which is very difficult to try to get and sometimes impossible. It delayed our claim by several weeks trying to get this claim requirement modified

Covid Coverage

We had to stay at a hotel because of covid coming off a cruise. Allianz covered our Hotel cost, and meal expenses during our unexpected event.

Whether you're a seasoned or newbie traveler, you've most likely heard of other travelers purchasing travel insurance.

Since traveling carries many risks, purchasing insurance can be an easy and efficient way to safeguard yourself against anything unexpected or any snafus in your travels.

Once you know you want to purchase travel insurance, you're met with a host of different providers - how do you know which one to choose? We've reviewed some travel insurance providers and even some travel insurance comparison sites like  InsureMyTrip . Still, we've got another to add to the mix: Allianz.

Read on to see if they're a good fit for insuring your next travels!

Allianz travel insurance logo.

What is Allianz Travel Insurance?

Before diving into their travel insurance, let's get some background information on Allianz themselves. While they offer comprehensive travel insurance, that's not the only thing they do. As a German financial service management company, Allianz specializes in multiple areas of insurance for both corporations and individuals. Founded in 1890, the company has only continued to grow and expand within its services and around the world.

Allianz travel insurance global assistance.

Allianz Travel Insurance

As such a global company, Allianz is a big name in the travel insurance industry, frequently offering comprehensive packages at reasonable prices, but what does that mean for you as a traveler? Allianz policies offer different levels of coverage. Generally, Allianz's travel insurance policies will cover trip cancellation, emergency medical and associated expenses, missed departures, trip delays, and legal expenses. You can upgrade policies for more coverage.

Policies and Packages

Allianz offers  single trip ,  annual , and backpacker policies, so you can choose the one that best fits your upcoming travels. With the single trip and annual policies, you can choose between bronze, silver, or gold packages.

Each type of package offers different coverage levels, with bronze covering the least but most affordable to gold covering the most but pricey. The  backpacker policy  covers explicitly with and without skis as their different coverage levels.

Allianz travel insurance policies and packages.

No trips are the same. Allianz will give you a quote before you commit to any of their plans to make sure you're tailored with the best plan/pricing suitable for you.

Using Allianz online tool, you can fill out the following information that gives them a better idea of the kind of trip you'll be taking:

  • What kind of trip (single, multi-annual, backpacking, business, etc…)
  • Number of travelers
  • Trip start and end date.
  • Birthdate(s) of all travelers.
  • Destination (up to three countries).

This will then give you a quote you can use to determine which level of coverage you want and whether Allianz insurance is within your travel budget!

Allianz Covid-19 insurance

One of the emerging reasons travelers rush to purchase travel insurance is the Covid pandemic. With restrictions ever-changing and testing requirements still existing, it's not out of the realm of possibility for Covid to derail your travels.

Keeping with the times, Allianz does have a decent  Covid-19 policy  that outlines what it does and doesn't cover. In some circumstances, like if you need to cut a trip short to care for a loved one who has Covid, you will have to provide written documentation to receive compensation.

Allianz Travel Insurance Reviews

Sometimes the best way to gauge whether a travel insurer is right for you is to hear about it from other travelers. On Trustpilot, Allianz travel insurance reviews holds a rating of 4.2/5 stars, with 84% of the reviews being "excellent." Many recent reviews speak to a lack of customer service and difficulties in filing their claims, with long waits to hear back from anyone at Allianz.

Filing a claim with Allianz

If you need to file a claim after your travels, you can do this a couple of ways.

You can use the  online form ,  which will require inputting all the information about your policy and details about why you're filing a claim. You can also email their travel email to receive the forms and then mail them off to file a claim. Keep in mind that their travel email also varies by country, so you'll need to retrieve the local email from which you've purchased your policy.

Contact information

Even though travel insurance can be pretty straightforward, that doesn't mean there won't be many situations where you'll need help. Contact details for Allianz travel insurance policies will vary from country to country, so make sure you look up your local contact number!

If you're in the US, you can contact Allianz using  this online form  or reach out to them by calling 1-866-884-3556.

Is Allianz worth it?

Travel insurance is always recommended, but should you be using Allianz?

Overall, they offer policies at multiple price points and cover a fair amount of travel "what ifs." Still, lately, their customer service and claim approval rates haven't been what they were late. It's not the perfect travel insurance, but no travel insurance will be 100% perfect with ever-changing travel requirements.

If you find their policy to cover everything you'll need for your trip, you can try Allianz travel insurance!

Flying in the sky with allianz travel insurance.

Our review: 3.8/5

  • Comprehensive policy for all types of travelers.
  • Three coverage levels at three other price points
  • Robust Covid-19 policy.
  • Hard to reach customer service
  • Poor or slow refund process.
  • Complicated policies communicated poorly to the public.

Allianz Travel Insurance, from Allianz Global Assistance, offers popular insurance products, and it’s our pick for business travelers. Allianz is a popular choice among business travelers due to its AllTrips Executive travel insurance policy with coverage for lost, stolen or damaged business equipment and rental car insurance.

Earning 4.1 out of 5 stars , our expert reviewers think Allianz is a great choice for international travel insurance.

Our Thoughts on Allianz Travel Insurance

We at the MarketWatch Guides team awarded Allianz Travel Insurance 4.1 out of 5 stars based on our provider review methodology. Named our pick for concierge services, Allianz offers 24/7 travel assistance through a multilingual team, which can help policyholders with travel and coverage issues while abroad. This service includes help with hotel and flight re-bookings, stolen travel documents, medical care arrangements and more.

Allianz scored highly in the customer service and reviews section of our methodology. Along with 24-hour assistance and concierge services, it offers a mobile app and various ways to file a claim, according to our research. However, Allianz does not offer cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage with any of its plans, an add-on that many other companies we’ve reviewed feature. It’s also one of the pricier providers we’ve gathered quotes for, so if you’re looking for a budget plan, Allianz may not be a good fit.

According to our survey of 1,000 people who have purchased travel insurance, 16% went with Allianz. Of those customers, 93% said travel insurance is worth the cost, with most citing peace of mind or financial protection as the reason.

Pros and Cons

How allianz scored in our methodology.

When we analyzed Allianz using our travel insurance ratings methodology, the company scored 4.1 out of 5 stars . The provider lost points in all categories except for coverage details and customer service and reviews and was awarded zero points for not offering cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.

Allianz vs. Generali Global Assistance

Generali Global Assistance’s Premium plan costs slightly less than Allianz’s OneTrip Premier plan while providing more than double the medical expense coverage. To better understand what consumers like and dislike about Allianz, we read the most recent customer reviews featured on Trustpilot.

What Customers Like

  • Excellent customer service: Several customers were impressed with the company’s kind, helpful and professional customer service agents. This reviewer , in particular, stated that their local travel agent highly recommended the company.

  • Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%): We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.

Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

While traveling can be a fun escape, it's an inherently risky activity with many variables to consider. So many worries can remove you from the joy of travel, which is where travel insurance can help.

Allianz Travel Insurance Global Assistance is a prominent leader in the travel insurance space that has been around in some form since 1890. Allianz offers a variety of travel insurance plans that can suit your individual needs. Read on to learn more about Allianz.

Allianz Travel Insurance Review

Allianz is one of the leaders in the travel insurance industry, included in our guide on the best international travel insurance . With 10 plans split between single trip, annual, and rental car insurance, Allianz has its bases covered. It also provides specific insurance for particular needs, such as annual policies for business travelers and sports equipment coverage for athletes.

While Allianz is one of the best international travel insurance providers, it also has great CFAR coverage for its Prime and Premier single trip plans, covering 80% of nonrefundable travel expenses when most policies usually offer 75%. It's also great for families, with coverage for kids 17 and under in its One

Allianz is well reviewed among customers, receiving an average of 4.3 stars out of five across nearly 70,000 reviews on Trustpilot. Its Better Business Bureau page fares a little worse, receiving 3.64 stars out of five across 1,600 reviews. Positive reviews mentioned an easy and quick claims process with a responsive customer service team. However, negative reviews often mentioned difficulty specifically with claims for ticketed events.

Allianz also has a highly rated mobile app called Allyz TravelSmart through which you can contact customer service, view your plan, and file a claim. It received an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on the Google Play store across over 2,600 reviews and 4.8 out of five stars from over 22,000 reviews on the Apple app store.

Coverage Options Offered by Allianz

Allianz travel insurance offers different policies, grouped under two types: single trips and annual multi-trip insurance .

The company's travel insurance policies can include the following coverage types:

  • Trip interruption coverage , which can help recoup costs if you leave a trip early.
  • Travel delay , which can cover some costs if you need additional accommodations due to a delay in travel.
  • Emergency medical transportation , which covers transportation to a hospital for eligible illnesses and injuries.
  • Emergency medical expenses in case of a dental or medical emergency.
  • Baggage delay , which can cover some costs if you need to purchase required items due to your bags being delayed by a certain period of time. Must have receipts for this.
  • Baggage loss or damage , which can help recoup some costs if your bag is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement, which can help recoup costs if you must cancel a nonrefundable trip due to an epidemic. It's important to note that there may be limitations and this isn't an option everywhere.
  • Travel accident coverage , which can cover costs related to an injury that results in loss of vision, your hands or feet, as well as loss of life.
  • Support via a 24-hour hotline

Single-Trip Plans

The general budget option is OneTrip Basic, which can offer various protections should something happen, if you file a claim for a qualified reason.

One step up is the OneTrip Prime policy, one of the most popular plans Allianz offers. It has higher coverage limits than the Basic plan, along with some additional perks.

A more complete option is OneTrip Premier, which includes more comprehensive protections should you need them. This policy is for more extensive, longer trips and includes extras like SmartBenefits—which up to $100 per day for a covered travel or baggage delay with no receipts necessary, only proof of delay—and sports equipment loss coverage.

The coverage limits available vary by plan. Here's an overview of what each policy covers:

Other OneTrip Premier benefits not mentioned in the table above include:

  • Sports Traveler, reimbursement up to $1,000 in the event of a missed sports event for a qualified reason
  • Sports Equipment Loss, reimbursement up to $1,000 to cover damaged or lost sports equipment
  • Sports Equipment Rental, reimbursement up to $1,000 for the cost to rent sports equipment if your equipment is damaged or lost
  • Vehicle return, up to $750 reimbursement to return your vehicle to your home if you can't drive it for a qualified reason
  • Adventure and sports exclusions changes, which allows you to waive some losses in the event you participate in high-risk activities like free diving at 30 ft, scuba diving at 100 ft, caving, and more

There are two additional single-trip plans from Allianz that offer more specialized coverage: One Trip Emergency and OneTrip Cancellation Plus.

OneTrip Emergency Medical

OneTrip Emergency Medical is a budget option that exclusively offers post-departure benefits to cover you while you're on your trip. As such, the plan doesn't include pre-departure benefits such as trip cancellation or interruption.

  • Travel delay, up to $200 per day per person for a maximum of $1000 for delays of six hours and beyond

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus policy by Allianz is its economical back-to-basics option that can recoup costs in the event of a travel delay, interruption, or cancellation for a qualified reason. This policy includes:

  • Travel interruption coverage, up to $5,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000
  • Travel delay, up to $150 with delays of six hours and beyond

Multi-Trip Plans

The aforementioned policies are for single trips, but with Allianz travel insurance it's possible to get an annual/multi-trip policy.

The starter annual plan is the AllTrips Basic policy which includes the most basic coverage, and it excludes both trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

The AllTrips Prime policy is geared toward travelers who take a minimum of three trips each year and comes with additional coverage compared to the basic plan.

Another annual plan is the AllTrips Premier policy, which is geared toward frequent travelers and includes higher coverage limits and choices.

AllTrips Executive

Additionally, there's the AllTrips Executive policy, which may be a good fit if you're a frequent business traveler. Under this plan, personal travel is also covered. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500 or $10,000
  • Travel delay, with a daily limit of $200 up to $1,600 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $50,000

  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $1,000
  • Rental car damage and theft coverage, up to $45,000
  • Business equipment coverage, up to $1,000 in the event your business equipment gets lost or damaged
  • Business equipment rental coverage, up to $1,000 in the event you need to rent business equipment due to loss, damage, or theft
  • Change fee coverage, up to $500 to recoup costs of changing a ticket for a qualified reason
  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage, up to $500 to recover fees lost due to getting loyalty points back after a canceled trip
  • Pre-existing condition coverage available when purchased within 15 days of first trip deposit

Additional Coverage Offered by Allianz

Aside from the travel insurance policies from Allianz listed above that help travelers prepare for interruptions and cancellations, there are additional add-ons that can cover more.

OneTrip Rental Car Protector

If you're looking for rental car coverage, Allianz offers the OneTrip Rental Car Protector policy for $11 per day. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $1,000
  • Collision damage waiver, up to $50,000 which helps cover costs in the event your rental car is damaged in an accident or stolen

On top of the rental car coverage plan, with the OneTrip Prime plan, there's an optional upgrade to get Required to Work coverage. If there is a work-related emergency and you need to cancel for a qualified reason, this coverage can help recover expenses.

Cancel For Any Reason

An optional upgrade for OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier, Allianz cancel for any reason policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs when canceling a trip for any reason. Allianz stands out compared to the best CFAR travel insurance as most policies only offer 75% coverage.

What's Not Included with Allianz Travel Insurance?

Allianz travel insurance covers the basics and more and has some high-risk activity exclusions in the OneTrip Premier plan. Aside from that, Allianz travel insurance excludes the following:

  • Acts of violence, such as war, terrorism, and civil unrest
  • Risky adventure sports
  • Unexpected natural disasters (OneTrip Premier allows cancellation due to hurricane warnings)
  • Any travel alerts or government regulations and more

If you're interested in coverage for activities like scuba diving, skiing, and more, consider World Nomads, which covers more than 200 activities.

Allianz Travel Insurance Cost

Allianz single trip travel insurance estimates.

How much travel insurance costs with Allianz will depend on a variety of factors, including the type of policy you purchase. To get a quote with Allianz, you'll need to provide the following:

  • Your destination
  • Travel dates
  • The state you live in
  • The total cost of the trip

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $102 for OneTrip Basic
  • $151 for OneTrip Prime
  • $184 for OneTrip Premier

A 30-year-old traveler from California is heading to Japan for two weeks, costing $4,000. The Allianz travel insurance quotes are:

  • $153 for OneTrip Basic
  • $195 for OneTrip Prime
  • $270 for OneTrip Premier

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $298 for OneTrip Basic (total for two travelers)
  • $400 for OneTrip Prime (total for two travelers)
  • $540 for OneTrip Premier (total for two travelers)

Allianz travel insurance premiums generally stack up favorably against the average cost of travel insurance  which is $248 per trip, but again, the specifics of your trip will largely determine how much you'll pay to insure it.

Allianz Annual Multi-Trip Estimates

To receive a quote on Allianz annual plans, you don't need nearly as much information. You just need the following:

  • Insurance start date
  • Your state of residence

A 30-year-old New York resident looking for travel insurance will pay the following prices for annual travel insurance with Allianz:

  • Allianz Basic: $125
  • Allianz Premier: $249
  • Allianz Executive: $459

A 60-year-old couple from Texas will pay the following:

  • Allianz Basic: $63 per traveler, $126 total
  • Allianz Premier: $217.50 per traveler, $435 total
  • Allianz Executive: $485 per traveler, $970 total

Compare Allianz Travel Insurance

See how Allianz stacks up against the competition.

Allianz Travel Insurance vs. AXA Travel Insurance

Competitor AXA travel insurance covers 75% of your nonrefundable costs if you choose to cancel, for any reason (as the name suggests) if you choose that as an upgrade and buy it two weeks before your first trip deposit. Allianz's CFAR policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs.

That said, if we look at the travel insurance quotes based on a 30-year-old traveler from California going to Japan in the first two weeks of October paying a total of $4,000 for the trip, AXA travel insurance is more affordable. It's $97 for its Silver plan, which covers 100% trip cancellation and interruption. Compare this to $153 for the OneTrip Basic Plan through Allianz.

Read our AXA travel insurance review here.

Allianz Travel Insurance  vs. HTH Travel Insurance

Allianz is a good travel insurance option if you're looking for a variety of customized choices. Another competitor, HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance , has three trip protection options.

TripProtector Economy is HTH's budget option and may be a good fit if you're looking for higher medical coverage limits. This policy covers up to $75,000 in accident and sick benefits and $500 in dental benefits.

Plus, the policy covers up to $500,000 for an emergency evacuation. The OneTrip Basic policy from Allianz covers the same dental benefits but offers just $10,000 in medical expenses.

Read our HTH travel insurance review here.

Allianz vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

A travel insurance policy can offer robust protections, but if you're looking for something basic for trip interruption or cancellation and rental car coverage, check your travel rewards credit card. If you experience illness, weather, or cancellations that affect your trip, you may be able to recoup costs.

Credit card travel insurance coverage may be a good fit for short trips where you don't have a ton of upfront prepaid costs. However, if you're going to be away for a while, have many prepaid expenses, and are concerned about medical coverage, traditional travel insurance may be your best bet.

Allianz Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Is allianz a good travel insurance company.

Allianz is a reputable and well-established travel insurance provider. The company offers various travel insurance policies for individual trips as well as annual plans. Coverage options may include trip interruption, trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, and more. The company has mixed reviews from consumers but has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

How does Allianz cover COVID?

Nearly all travel insurance policies offered by Allianz cover COVID-19, aside from the OneTrip Rental Car Protector Plan. Through the Allianz Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, policyholders receive additional protections if they need to cancel a trip due to COVID. Unfortunately, while it's available in most plans it's not available in all jurisdictions, so be sure to read the fine print.

Which Allianz plan is best?

While the best plan is one best suited to your needs, Allianz's OneTrip Premier is the most robust policy, with high cancellation and interruption coverage. Additionally, kids 17 and under are included in coverage. This policy also includes unique benefits for athletes and adventurers thanks to sports equipment coverage.

Does Allianz require proof of incident?

If you need to file a claim, Allianz may require proof of incident in order to receive benefits. In cases of medical issues, you may need to provide a medical receipt or document. In other cases, you may need to provide other documentation for trip cancellation or trip interruption such as a death certificate, police report, or employment letter.

Does Allianz cover missed flights?

Allianz doesn't cover missed flights exactly but can help cover costs due to trip delays depending on your policy. So if you missed a connecting flight, you may be able to receive funds to recoup costs related to accommodations and transportation.

Great price & easy to setup

Getting a quote and confirming was straight-forward to do. Great price in this current climate. Shopped around and there were only two options at a good price, others extortionate. Thank you Allianz. Hopefully I can stick to the no claims with you, fingers crossed.

Flow insurance (online)

Allianz have been in touch via this platform and I have resolved the matter - thankyou. But still haven’t had an email from digital team. I have sent confirmation of who I am this morning to verify I am a customer. I had insurance with flow via Allianz platform. Price is very competitive hence 3 star rating. However I don’t need to renew this year as I have sold car. I tried emailing digital help email but had no reply. When I tried to cancel they wanted me to pay 93p to exit prior to renewal date. With better communication this is a very competitive product in the current climate.

Not sure what this company is about. Recently taken over Flow insurance and mine is due for renewal. Completely out of the blue they will not renew my insurance. 75 years of age, Completely unblemished driving record. Motorbike and car driving 59 years. No explanation, unbelievable. Even after emailing the company as suggested, all that I received was a trite script explaining nothing. To say that I find this company useless is an overstatement.

Travel insurance is important because it can help cover the cost of unexpected medical expenses while you're traveling. It can also reimburse you for lost or stolen baggage, canceled flights, and other unforeseeable problems that may occur while you're away from home.

Simply put, there's a lot to consider.

But not all policies are created equal, and you must understand what you're covered for before you purchase a policy. This article will look in-depth at AXA Assistance USA travel insurance. We'll discuss the costs, coverage limits, exclusions, and more to help you make an informed decision about whether or not this particular travel insurance provider is right for you.

  • Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans available
  • Trip interruption coverage of up to 150% of the trip cost
  • Emergency medical coverage of up to $250,000

Introduction to AXA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA is among the best travel insurance companies . It covers the fundamentals of travel insurance, with coverage for trip cancellations, medical expenses, and emergency medical/non-medical evacuation. With three plans, AXA also offers coverage for travelers with various budgets.

It's worth noting that many important add-ons aren't available for AXA's cheapest Silver plan, such as pre-existing condition coverage, rental car add-ons, and Schengen travel insurance. Cancel for any reason coverage is also only available for AXA's most expensive Platinum plan.

Coverage Options Offered by AXA

AXA Assistance USA offers three levels of coverage: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each plan comes with different protections and varying coverage limits, with the Silver being the most basic option and Platinum offering the most premium coverage.

Some policies might even include added coverage free of charge, such as a waiver for pre-existing conditions , which is free for Gold and Platinum plans as long as you purchase your plan within 14 days of your trip deposit.

Specialized Coverage Options

The plan you purchase will determine which add-ons are available. For example, those with a Platinum plan can add CFAR (cancel for any reason) coverage , allowing you to receive a full refund if you cancel your trip within 14 days of making the initial deposit.

Or, if you want extra protection for your rental car, depending on your AXA plan, you might be able to add a collision damage waiver (CDW). Policyholders with Gold plans can add $35,000 CDW, and those with Platinum plans can include $50,000 CDW.

If you're traveling within the Schengen Territory, which is made up of 27 European countries, you may eligible for Schengen Travel Insurance, which covers you in all 27 countries. This option is only available for Gold and Platinum travelers and coverage lasts up to 90 days.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for the plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate AXA's coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  AXA travel insurance quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $83
  • AXA Gold: $107
  • AXA Platinum: $127

Premiums for AXA plans are between 2.7% and 4.2% of the trip's cost, well below the average cost of travel insurance. It's also relatively cheap compared to many of its competitors

AXA provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • AXA Silver: $109
  • AXA Gold: $128
  • AXA Platinum: $153

Once again, premiums forAXA plans are between 3.6% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following AXA quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $392
  • AXA Gold: $462
  • AXA Platinum: $550

Premiums for AXA plans are between 6.5% and 9.2%, which is roughly in line with the average cost for travel insurance. This is to be expected, as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to Purchase and Manage Your AXA Policy

The process of purchasing an AXA policy is simple. After obtaining your quote, you'll need to decide which of AXA's three plans you want to buy. When you pay for your plan, be prepared to provide additional personal information, like your birthday, phone number, and address.

Once you finalize your purchase, you'll have a 10-day free look period, in which you can cancel your policy and get your money back.

How to File a Claim with AXA Travel Insurance

To file a claim with AXA Assistance USA, head to the claims forms online to find the appropriate form. Once you've filled out your form and gathered the required documentation, you can email them to [email protected] or send them by mail to:

AXA Customer Service Reviews

AXA's U.S. branch has few reviews on Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau — just over 20 between the two sites. Its UK branch has over 1,100 reviews, most of which are overwhelmingly negative. However, the quality of AXA Travel Insurance UK isn't necessarily indicative of its U.S. coverage.

In fact, on SquareMouth, where the majority of AXA U.S.'s reviews, reviews are generally positive. It received an average of 4.22 stars out of five across over 900 reviews. Customers reported that adjusting an AXA policy was easy and the customer service team was responsive. However, reviews on the claims process was more mixed, with spotty communication and long wait times.

See how AXA travel insurance compares to top travel insurance providers.

AXA Assistance USA vs. AIG Travel Guard

When comparing AXA to Travel Guard , we'll look at the coverage levels from their mid-tier plans, the Silver plan and Travel Guard Preferred plan, respectively.

With Travel Guard Preferred plan, you'll get:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $150,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $225,000
  • Emergency medical coverage of $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage of up to $800

Comparing those Travel Guard coverages with AXA's Silver plan, you'll see that AXA's coverage limits are a bit higher. With AXA's Silver plan you'll get $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, for example. And the baggage loss coverage limit is up to $1,500.

If you're looking for greater coverage limits, AXA makes the most sense in this scenario. But premiums will also vary based on factors like the traveler's age, trip destination, and trip cost. So you'll have to run your own numbers to make a final decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance provides single-trip and multi-trip insurance for travelers who want to go abroad for an extended period of time. And, like with all insurance, the various plans have varying degrees of coverage.

Allianz Travel Insurance's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan, which offers:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $150,000
  • Emergency medical coverage for $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage up to $800

Looking at AXA's mid-tier Silver plan, you'll see that, again, AXA offers more coverage for emergency medical and baggage loss, theft, or damage than Allianz Travel Insurance. That said, if cost is an essential factor for you, you'll have to get quotes using your personal trip information to make an informed decision.

Read our Allianz Travel Insurance review here.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Already have a great travel credit card, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum? Some of the standard coverages, such as rental car insurance, may be included in the card you already have. It's a good idea to research the terms of your credit card's travel protection before purchasing a separate travel insurance policy.

If you're driving to your destination and don't have any non-refundable trip expenses, the coverage from your credit card may be enough. Another time it might work is if you have health insurance covering you while abroad and you're in good health without worrying about possible medical costs.

It's essential to remember that credit card coverage is usually secondary. This means you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Read our guide on the best credit cards with travel insurance here.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed AXA Assistance USA

We researched AXA by evaluating its travel insurance plans compared to other plans from the top travel insurance companies. The aspects we looked at included, but were not limited to, different coverage options, claims limits, what is covered, available add-ons, and extra services for policy holders.

What's important when choosing a policy isn't just the price — it's making sure you're getting adequate coverage that meets your needs without breaking the bank. Filing a claim should also be easy and stress-free if you ever have to use your policy.

AXA Assistance USA FAQs

If you're diagnosed with COVID-19 before a trip and need to cancel, AXA may cover your expenses. Additionally, a COVID-19 diagnosis during a trip may be covered under AXA's medical expense, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits. Be sure to review your policy to ensure coverage details.

While you may extend your coverage in certain circumstances, such as extended hospitalization, and update your travel dates prior to your departure, you can't extend AXA travel insurance plans while you're traveling.

AXA's Gold and Platinum plan cover pre-existing medical conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 14 days of your initial trip deposit. AXA's Silver plan does not cover pre-existing conditions and has a 60-day look-back period.

You can download AXA claims forms on its website and email them to [email protected].

AXA isn't the most flexible travel insurance company and isn't great at specializing, but it offers comprehensive general coverage. Its prices aren't significantly more expensive or cheaper than its competitors.
