Callaway razr x tour irons .

Callaway RAZR X Tour 3-PW Individual Iron with Steel Shafts The Callaway RAZR X Tour Iron creates tighter shots, shorter putts and lower scores through uncompromised performance. Most irons today are designed to maximize one specific performance benefit- distance, forgiveness or feel- while sacrificing all other critical areas needed to hit more greens. To consistently hit it close and shoot lower scores, golfers need to be able to make shots from all areas of the golf course. That's why RAZR Te

Not a detailed review for me this time. Had about 60 sets of irons over the last 5 years or so. Cannot hit forged blades or cavity tour irons anymore. These are what I consider these tour irons without being "tour" irons. They have the tour iron look but much more forgiving, Dont hit these any further but much straighter. Picked them up new at a good price. Great irons for the price!!!

you name it I have used them!

I purchased these irons from Dick's Sporting Goods. They were on sale at the time, 3-PW for $549. I loved the way that they felt and they have not disappointed me at all. I was playing Callaway X-18 irons and I just needed a change. I'm hitting the ball about one club farther with the Razr-X irons. I also hit the new X-Hot Pro irons and to be honest I could not tell much of a difference between the two set...except for the price. I was hitting the X-Hot slightly farther, but could attribute that to the stronger lofts in the X-Hot irons. I can't wait to actually get to play consistently...I've been battling HCL and the after effecst for about 8 months now, but I feel so much better now and I'm ready to be out on the links.

I have not needed to contact customer service about any of the Callaway iron sets that I've owned. I did have a Callaway FT-IZ driver and had problems with the stock shaft breaking. Callaway replaced the shaft with a stock shaft twice and then replaced the shaft with an upgraded shaft...all at no charge.

Callaway X-14 irons and Callaway X-18 irons.

Ordered these from Callaway witht the Nippon 950 regular steel shafts as i wanted something to get the ball flight higher. Clubs came in and I took them to the range today. I was suprised as how small the heads looked, I know they are tour heads but they don't look to small or to big and chunky. I warmed up and took the PW out first and put a 3/4 swing just letting the club drop and hit the ball and pow the ball launched and had a nice high ball flight to my target. My next swing I put some muscle behind it and I was pleasantly pleased at the muted whack and fast ball launch. The ball flew with a piercing high flight but landed softly. My friend came over and hit with me and we hit the 7 iron and he couldn't believe I was out distancing him and he was the one that taught me to golf! I will say that coming from Mizuno forged irons to these Callaways I was alittle worried about losing that nice feel Mizuno's are known for. Yes these are not forged clubs but I am a player that enjoys some forgiveness with some playability. I like them so far and will report back after I get some rounds in.

Great customer service, very knowledgeable staff helped me with my shaft selection.

Muzino MP 60's and Taylormade R7TP.

I am a club maker and for the past 6 years have played clubs that I have either built or reshafted because I do not trust the mass-produced clubs being accurate in length, flex, spine alligned, frequency matched, loft, lie, etc; The problem with making clubs is that you never get your hands on the newer designs and are forced to deal with component companies or run the risk of buying fraudulant heads on Ebay. That being said it has been several years since I purchased a set of brand-new clubs and decided to do so to see how far behind the latest technology I really am. I received my new Razors yesterday and played them for the first time. I could not believe the feel of these clubs. I hit every greeen but two in regulation. You notice that even miss hits go towards the target. The thing is that it seems difficult to hit these irons poorly. I have never said that before about a set of irons. Not only are they very accurate but they are long as well. I would say that I picked up 1/2 a club with each iron. I expected to have to reshaft the irons with what I feel are "nicer" Rifle shafts but after yesterday I will not be tinkering with these bad boys. This is the first set of irons that I have ever purchased that made me instantly more confident in my game and that is after one round. I have never reviewed a set of clubs before but thought that I couldn't pass on these. Try them at a demo-site and you will become a believer.

I called Callaway after registering the clubs having purchased them through Quibids and simply wanted to confirm that they were legit. The person was very friendly and confirmed that Callway only lists their serial numbers on the 8 iron as I was concerned that it was not on each club and confirmed the set was legit by looking up the serial number.

You name it I have played it.

Callaway Razr X Tour vs Razr X Forged

Has anyone done a comparison between the Razr X Tour and the Razr X Forged irons? I've found some great reviews on here for each set individually, but no direct comparison. Everyone seems to love which ever ones they get.

I currently have the X14 Pro Series and I think it's time to upgrade.

I'm planning to go to a local shop that is an authorized Callaway Fitting Location, but I feel kind of bad "wasting" their time as I'm going to buy them at Callaway Preowned to save some money.

I'm about a 10 handicap and getting better if anyone has suggestions. Club head speed with a 6 iron is around 92 mph.

Thanks a lot!

I have played both irons sets. I had the tours in the bag about 25 rounds, The rxf have seen around 10 rounds. I have always preferred the feel and feedback that forged irons deliver. I initially bagged the tour irons I thought they would be more a players type iron. I went to tours from the 09 x forged. After a few rounds with the tours I can to the decision that for me they were more a GI type iron than a players iron. Basically they would play similar to the x22 irons more than the older x tour model. The tours are very forgiving and do provide a small amount of feedback, they have the typical cast iron feel and feedback. The rxf are only a tiny bit less forgiving but provide so much more feedback and feel than the tours. I have found with the rxf I generate more spin and seem to have more control with them. The ball flight for me was a bit higher in the rzf than the tours, although the KBS shafts are more than likely playing a big role here. I would say go to the forged if you are a solid ball striker, if you could that little bit more forgiveness get the the tours.

But when I them at GG I hit them both fine. It seems like the RXF are more forgiving than the MP59.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, guys. JB, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time to write it. That is definitely in line with what I thought would be the case based on the reviews for the sets individually. It seems like the X Tour would maybe save me a stroke or two now as they are more forgiving, but in the long run, I'd be better served with the Forged as they'll provide more feedback and make me a better golfer. I definitely became a better ball striker when switch to the X14 pro series from thicker cavity backs about 6 years ago. Early in the season, I struggle with the 3/4 iron at times, but by summer I can usually hit them fairly consistently. I'll go to a local Callaway fit center in the next couple days to swing both of them and provide feedback on the thread for others interested, but I'm definitely leaning towards the Forged and will likely pull the trigger on them. Thanks again! Andy

I have a combo set. 3-6 in X Tour and 7- PW in X Forged. Fitted with PX 5.5 Flighted. Bought them last month and have to say they are best irons I've played to date. Also my 1st set of Callaways. I've always been a Mizzy irons fan. I play of 3 and judging by the numbers and accuracy over the past 4 weeks I can see scratch being achieved this season. The X Forged are smooth and nicely weighted. I had my lofts tweaked 3 degrees stronger. The spin around the greens from 7-PW is amazing. Cannot praise these highly enough. A real game changer

Thanks for the feedback, TM. GreekGrind also pointed me to his insanely thorough review: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/470186-2011-2012-callaway-golf-irons-shootout-review/ Looking through the posts there, it looks like several others have done the same as you. I'm assuming the logic is that the 7-PW is usually a little steeper swing ("digger") and generally more forgiving, so the RXF is more appropriate. As the longer irons are more of a shallow, sweeping swing, and generally a little harder to hit, the extra forgiveness of the RXT is needed. That seems like a really great strategy. I found a guy at work that has the RXF, so we're going to head over to the range in a few hours and I'm going to hit them. As most the courses around here are fairly short, requiring no more than a 7 iron into 90% of the par 3/4s, I back to thinking I'll go with the RXF if I like the way they hit. Then, if I have trouble with the long irons (hitting par 5s in two, long par 3s), I may do as you did, and pick up the RXT for my long irons. Thanks again! I'll let you know how I like the RXF after I hit them. I'm sure I'll love them.

Alright, just got back from the range hitting my current clubs (X-14 Pro) and the RXF (KBS shaft). First impression on looks: RXF are definitely more of a blade with a thinner sole, but not as thin as blades. 3 iron looks pretty thin though. BIG NOTE: I was hitting off mats Hitting: First impression, I did not get the wow factor I expected. Honestly, they didn't fell all that much different than my X-14s. After hitting over a large bucket, and all clubs, here were my thoughts: They were definitely lighter. Not sure if this is the shaft difference or the club head. Due to this, I tended to pull it slightly, or hit a draw. I quickly corrected for this and it was a non-issue. The distance was the same as my X-14s. At the end of the day, I would say I hit more shots consistently with the RXF, but not drastically obvious. I was surprised how forgiving they were. I expected very little forgiveness off the toe, but I could tell I definitely hit some off the toe, and they still went pretty decently. Trajectory wasn't all that different either. Now, I didn't have the RXT to compare to. I'm going to try and go play 9 with my co-worker today to see how they feel on the course. I'll update if I make it out. Thanks for all the feedback.

Well, I didn't get to play the RXF on grass yesterday. Kind of a tangent question here: I'm about 6'1" or so and a local shop said I should have +1/2" shafts. This is inline with my set of clubs which were custom. When I went to the X-14s, I just got standard as they were cheaper. Initially, I had months of topping them and hitting them thin. Now, I'm adjusted to their length and hit them fine. So, the question is, if I get the RXT or RXF, do I go with +1/2" since that is what I should have with likely short term frustration of hitting the ball fat for potential long term benefit, or do I just stick with standard length since that is now what I am accustomed to? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm 6,3 and my set is standard length and lie. Fitting just doesn't work on height. If you are going to buy new I'd get a fit. Saves any wondering down the line if you ain't hitting them great. That way you know for sure it a swing issue rather than equipment. Just a note about mats, tough to judge on them. I never base an opinion on irons or any clubs unless I get them on course. To be honest I hit my irons rubbish on mats at range. Club can't interact same as on turf for obvious reasons.

As for the fitting, I want to buy pre-owned online, which makes it a little awkward going to a shop to get fit then not buying from them. I guess I can pay $50 or whatever it would be to get a fitting, even though I wouldn't buy from that shop, before I buy online so I know which length to buy. I'll see if the shop offers that service. I'm a little under the gun as the website has some coupon codes through the end of the month. Thanks! Andy

Only thing I could say is buy them 2nd hand 1/2 inch above and then get them tweaked by a PGA pro. I had my lofts tweaked in 5 mins. I use same guy for all adjustments. He gives me a tune up lesson a week before season begins.
Well, I pulled the trigger and ordered the RXF, 3-PW Project X Flighted Steel 6.0 Std (Black), +1/2", 2 Up (White) lie. They had a set in "average" condition for a lot cheaper, and 2 up lie instead of 2 down lie, which the golf shop thought would be a better starting point for me. Once I get them, I'll take them in to get the lie fine tuned for my swing. I'll post feedback once I play a round with them. They should be here Tuesday. A big factor in getting the RXF and not looking more into the RXT is that the RXFs were more forgiving that I expected. As the extra forgiveness in the RXT was my reason for considering them, I determined the RXF were forgiving enough for me. Thanks for all the feedback. For $440, I think it's worth making the switch to the RXFs. Side note, I'm also waiting for an R11 to come in the mail on Monday, which will replace my R580XD. My game is either going to get better, or a lot worse before it gets better with a whole new bag of clubs. Thanks!

 • 3 weeks later...

Well, I FINALLY got to play the RXF, albeit, for only 9 holes. As I said, I ordered the 2 up and took them to get fitted. All my contact with the ground was near the toe, so I had them bent up even more. I now have a slight draw, but very minor. I've been going to the range at night about 2 times a week and liked the clubs more and more.

Today, after work, I was able to get in 9 with the time change. I played the black tees as it's a short course (2787 yards from black, 70.1/125) and shot a +3, a little better than my 9.4 handicap. Had my putting not sucked, I'd would have scored better (two 3 putts!).

The irons felt fantastic! Very soft and great feel off the club. I could definitely tell a difference from my X-14 Pro unlike on the mats on the range. The best thing I can say is I birdied two of the three par 3s (179 & 160 yards). I've never done that before over 9 holes. I was very consistent with them and had no miss hits. That being said, I didn't have to hit anything more than a 7 iron as the course is fairly short. I only missed one green, and that was because I was playing too much wind and it didn't blow the shot back towards the green. It went where I aimed. The most impressive? I put an 8 iron 14" from the hole on a par 3 (pic below). That is very rare for me. The ball mark was about 14" right of the ball, so I assume it jumped forward then had minimal spin back. That was about the same spin as my X14 Pros, but the hole was a little down wind.

I'm very pleased with the decision on the RXF over the RXT. The RXF are plenty forgiving for me and they feel great.

Next Monday I'm going to play a local Country Club for a charity event, so that'll really put them to the test as it's a tougher course and I'm sure I'll have to hit some longer irons.

Thanks for all the feedback and help!

Unless there is a Japanese version of the Razr X Tour. There can be no comparison. I compared the Razr X Tour to the PING I20 one day and found the RXT to be basically a dud. The fsound was lousy, the distance wasn't great, but everything kept coming back to the feel. It simply felt dead. Now, I ended up ordering the I20 because on a second occasion the I20 was again amazing to me, but the RXT just had no life and no feel. I can only assume the the Razr X Forged has to be a better feeling club.

 • 2 weeks later...

My last set of irons was Titleist 710 MB's (blades). I was looking for more forgiveness, and tried the AP2's, MP53's. and after hearing my dad rave about the Callway's, the Razr Tour and Forged. I am/was a Titleist fan, but all I can say was I was blown away by the results of the Callaway. Needless to say, I ordered the Razr X Forged and actually just picked them up today! Really excited to take these out tomorrow. I didn't find them any harder to hit than the Razr X Tours, but preferred the finish, appearance, sound and feel. Both are great clubs - the ball flies off the face. I just realized how much I still preferred the feeling of forged clubs during my trials. To each their own though.

I wished I had seen this post earlier...........I would have recommended the Callaway Diablo Forged............Some say it is the best iron that Callaway have ever made and they still command a pretty high following and resale price...........Even more forgiving and more feel than the RXF

Callaway Razr X Forged Better Player Irons Review

What we say...

The Better Player category, more than any other, will come down to personal preference of the testers but there was one iron on test that seemed to combine everything our team was looking for in an iron designed for competent golfers.

The RAZR X Forged won high praise in all categories from every tester and that meant it was a worthy winner of top spot in this hotly contested category. The iron was designed with feedback from Callaway’s Tour stars, leading to the confidence inspiring topline, narrow sole and short blade length along with a higher, squared-off toe and the sharper leading edge.

Senior Equipment Editor Jon liked the look but expected it to be harder to hit than it actually was because of the short blade length preferred by good players. However, the slightly thicker topline and the cavity in the rear of the head meant Jon found this had all the benefits of a Better Player iron but with quite a lot of forgiveness. Tom agreed, insisting the thicker topline gave him more confidence but the lack of offset meant it performed like a very traditional blade.

David insisted this had the perfect blend of performance because the long irons didn’t look too intimidating while the short irons offered plenty of feel and control – the perfect fit for better players. “These irons also come at a competitive price, considering the quality on offer. There are a lot of grooves on the face and I know why they have done it but I think some people might find it a little offputting because it looks very different to other irons. The toe is quite squared-off and  angular, which is no bad thing but again could be quite a personal thing. However, the blade length is excellent and combined with a slightly thicker top edge this will appeal to a lot of good golfers.”

An uncompromised forged iron for elite golfers. What sets the RAZR X Forged Irons apart is the unique Triple Net Forging process. This three-step forging yields superior feel and enables high-performance Tour CC grooves to be precision forged into each club face. Tour CC Grooves provide golfers with increased spin for aggressive shot-making. Debuting on the PGA Tour in 2010 and found in the bags of two Major championship winners plus the FedExCup champion, these grooves are found only on Callaway’s forged products. This proprietary design produces 40% more grooves on the club face. Forged 1020 Carbon Steel produces soft feel and incredibly responsive feedback at impact. The Triple Net Forging ensures extremely tight tolerances that can’t be achieved with conventional methods, and permits our engineers to incorporate higher-performing grooves that still conform to Tour rules. In addition to thin topline, narrow sole and short blade length, the RAZR X Forged Irons’ clubhead has a higher, squared-off toe and a sharper leading edge for precision shot-shaping. 50 Words or Less

The Callaway X Forged irons are a perfect option for players who want great looks and feel with a little forgiveness.

Introduction

With the release of their two new players irons – the X Forged and the Apex MB – Callaway has added to an already substantial line up.  Knowing how impressive both the Apex CF 16 and the Apex Pro irons are, I wondered what these latest releases would be bringing to the table.  My testing revealed that the X Forged is different iron entirely, truly geared for the better player.

are razr x tour irons forged

The Callaway X Forged irons are everything a better player could want at address.  The top line is thin, and there’s very minimal offset .  The head is just large enough to frame the ball, and the overall shape is a bit tighter without being boxy or graceless.

One of the most interesting visual aspects is the finish.  It’s somewhere between satin and chrome , and I think it looks great.  You get the glare reduction of satin but a little of the bling of chrome.

Comparing it to the Apex irons, the X Forged is much more of a players iron than the Apex CF 16 – less offset, thinner, smaller.  It’s nearly identical to the Apex Pro in size and offset, but the finish is different and the toe is more square.

Sound & Feel

When you catch the X Forged on the center of the face, you’re rewarded with a classic feel – soft and crisp .  These irons have better feedback than many others in this category .  When you move off the sweet spot, the feel gets substantially firmer.

The sound is one of the major differences between the Apex irons and the X Forged.  Both Apex irons have that crisp “snap” of a distance iron.  They feel long.  The X Forged has a more traditional forged sound and feel that communicates control.

Performance

Callaway typically does a good job of explaining which of their irons fit each type of player.  In the case of the X Forged, they explain it by saying very little.  Whereas their other irons have high tech features like the 360 Cup Face, Exo Cage, or Tungsten Loaded Standing Wave, the X Forged is billed as having “Precision Grooves, Classic Shaping, and Exceptional Feel.”  These are irons for the player that’s consistently hitting the center of the face and is more concerned with control than distance.

That isn’t to say that the X Forged is short, not be a long shot.  The lofts of the X Forged are similar to the Apex Pro, and I found the distances to be nearly identical.  If you want the longest 6I in your foursome, you can opt for other Callaway models like the Epic .  However, the X Forged can go yard for yard with any iron in the players cavity back category .

One important, if under appreciated, technical aspect of the X Forged is the CG Progression .  What this refers to is that the CG is lower in the long irons and higher in the short irons .  This is important for two reasons.  First, in the long irons, you want a low CG to get the ball airborne and maximize carry distance.  With the short irons, you want a higher CG to create a stronger ball flight and better consistency.  I found that the X Forged irons gave me a consistent, playable peak height throughout the set, which is the hallmark of a good CG progression.

are razr x tour irons forged

The  Callaway  X Forged irons were a finalist in my recent iron fitting, and it’s easy to see why.  They offer all the forgiveness that a better player would need or want without compromising on feel or aesthetics.  Combine that with great turf interaction and the ability to control trajectory and you have an iron you can expect to see frequently on Tour.

The iblades getting kicked out of the bag? What’s replacing them?

' src=

Potentially. I have a story coming out about that, hopefully in the near future.

' src=

Matt: Any chance of a post about your recent fitting? Would enjoy reading about the other clubs you tried and your overall experience. Many thanks.

Yes, I will have a story about it. Hopefully it will be out in the next month.

' src=

Just bought the x forged and been playing golf for 25 years with titleist and Taylor made irons ..these are the best irons I have ever hit bar none! Truly remarkable and i never ever thot I’d put callaway in my bag..true blue titleist iron guy and that is no longer the case!

' src=

Hi Matt really good review, I was thinking about buying a set of mizuno´s jpx 919 tour but I´m a little concerned about forgiveness. How do this callaway´s x forged compare to the mizuno´s jpx 919 tour in terms of feel. Are the mizuno´s noticeably softer? or I would not feel any difference? Thank you in advance. Greetings from the Canary Islands. (Spain)

I think the X Forged is slightly more forgiving. Feel is subjective. To me, the Mizunos are slightly softer, but not much.

' src=

Would a 15 handicap who is a picket struggle with these?

I’m guessing you meant “picker.” If so, I’d say that there are better choices. A steady diet of thin shots is not what these irons were made for.

' src=

How would these do for somebody with a higher handicap (let’s leave it over 20+)? I’m working on my consistency at this point. My game has improved this year and I’m ready for the next level club. Would these be a good fit?

I can only recommend a fitting for you to get that specific information for your swing. Generally speaking, I would not recommend these irons to a 20+ handicap player.

' src=

Being a 8 handicap who doesn’t take a divot be ok to use the x forged? Love the look of them.

I would recommend a fitting to find out for sure.

Callaway RAZR X Technology pulls the CG low and deep by re-distributing weight around the cavity. Callaway promises the forgiveness of a wide sole with the power of a thin sole.

Are Callaway Razr X Irons Still Good? Are They Forgiving for High Handicappers?

iron main1

“The Callaway Razr X irons won multiple prestigious awards when they first came out and they can still be seen in the bags of casual golfers in 2023. But do they really live up to the hype? We tested them to find out.”

The Callaway Razr X irons have been on our radar for quite some time. In fact, some of our testers use some of these irons every week. They were hugely popular just a few years ago but have been succeeded by fancier Callaway irons.

But we really wanted to see for ourselves how the Callaway Razr X compared to modern Callaway irons. In addition to letting our high handicap testers have a go at the Callaway Razr X from the range and on the course, we tested them against more recent Callaway irons. Take a look at what we found…

Are Callaway Razr X’s Still Good?

“The Callaway Razr X irons have some of the same essential features that are included in newer Callaway irons.”

So are the Callaway Razr X irons still good? For high handicappers, absolutely. One of the most common notes we got from our testers had to do with the length of the blade. The Callaway Razr X’s sport a nice, long blade that promotes forgiveness across the expanse of the face.

And believe us when we say that the face, and the sweet spot, are expansive. The Callaway Razr X irons work incredibly well for players who are in dire need of more forgiveness. Of course, mid and low handicappers will find them lacking for their compromised workability.

Drawing and fading the ball at will was only possible for the very best tester in our group. But that’s not really what these irons were made for anyway. The lack of offset was a bit perplexing but overall, our high handicap testers really liked these irons for their forgiveness.

Are the Callaway Razr X Irons Forgiving for High Handicappers?

Callaway Razr X Irons1

“The Callaway Razr X irons are nothing if not forgiving.”

In addition to a longer blade length, the Callaway Razr X irons feature Variable Face Thickness design. This face manufacturing process involves thinning the face out in areas where new players usually mis-hit.

A thinner face means better flex and better flex means faster ball speed. The Callaway Razr X irons also place a high emphasis on low and deep CG. While the process for precision CG placement has improved since the early 2010’s, the Callaway Razr X irons are still comfortable for high handicappers because of the CG placement.

In fact, compared to more recent Callaway irons, the Callaway Razr X irons have a very similar feel on the back and downswing. They also feel really smooth all the way through the ball which will be more affirming and encouraging to just about any type of player; but especially for high handicap players.

Callaway Razr X’s Vs Callaway Mavrik Irons

“The Callaway Mavrik irons are lightyears ahead of the Callaway Razr X’s in terms of design technology but does that really make them better?”

The Mavrik irons were the first Callaway irons to use AI computers to develop the face. This included running the face construction through millions of simulations to find the optimal setup.

But what does that mean for performance? Well according to launch monitor testing, the Mavriks did indeed generate more ball speed. But carry distance was actually better with the Callaway Razr X’s.

That being said, the Mavrik irons do have a nicer feel thanks to the urethane microspheres injected into the head. In terms of pure distance though, the Callaway Razr X’s came out on top.

Callaway Razr X First Impressions

Callaway Razr X Irons

“We were definitely impressed with the length of the blades on these irons which is evident as soon as you pick them up.”

The Callaway Razr X irons also have fairly weak lofts which generates a ton of height and is what helps contribute to the impressive carry distances. While not our first impression, we were very impressed with the comfort of these irons very early on.

It doesn’t take very long to get the hang of these irons even if you have an aggressive swing style. They feel smooth through the ball, the CG is nice and low and best of all, they allow you to produce your fastest swings.

Callaway Razr X Selling Points

 • Variable face thickness
 • Minimal offset
 • Razr CG placement technology
 • Lightweight design
 • Moderate sole thickness

Callaway Razr X Key Technology

“Classic Callaway design elements are evident in the Callaway Razr X irons.”

Variable Face Thickness: Sections of the face are thinned out to promote higher flex and faster ball speeds.

Razr Technology: This is a design element that allows for weight savings and redistribution to the lower, deeper part of the club head.

Deep CG: A deep CG will make it much easier for higher handicap players to get under the ball and launch it high.

“The Callaway Razr X irons are really best for players who are seeking maximum forgiveness.”

If you have been playing for a little while and realize that you need help with forgiveness, the Callaway Razr X irons would be ideal. However, if you are playing for the first time, you may want to look elsewhere.

The Callaway Razr X irons might not have the offset that pure beginners need. Plus, the moderate width of the sole will probably look a bit intimidating for first-time players. But for high handicappers on the cusp of breaking 100, these irons would be perfect.

Distance: 94/100

Forgiveness: 96/100, workability: 95/100, overall performance: 95/100, value: 96/100, overall score: 95/100, check out more reviews here:.

2013 Callaway X Forged Irons — Pics and Info

are razr x tour irons forged

What’s better than a forged muscleback iron at address? Nothing, except maybe an iron that looks the same, plays the same and has more forgiveness.

Callaway has attempted to create such an iron for 2013 with its X Forged, a tour-inspired forged cavity back designed by Roger Cleveland that offers cleaner looks and better performance than its predecessor, the Callaway RAZR X Forged.

Luke Williams, senior director of global woods and irons for Callaway, said the most popular irons on the PGA Tour and European Tour right now for the company are not its forged cavity backs. It’s the company’s muscleback offerings — last year’s RAZR X Muscleback irons and their predecessor, the Tour Authentic X-Prototype irons that Callaway tour players are trusting in their bags.

The reason is not necessarily that tour players don’t need the added size and forgiveness of a forged cavity back, either. Yes, one of the reasons musclebacks are more popular with tour players than forged cavity back irons is because of their clean looks. But there are also performance reasons.

According to Williams, Callaway’s recent musclebacks have been a hit because of what the company is calling CG Height progression. CG (Center of Gravity) Height Progression puts the center of gravity lower in the long irons for the higher trajectory that tour pros want. It also places the CG higher in the short irons for a flatter trajectory. Callaway’s previous forged cavity back irons, the RAZR X Forged, had the opposite CG progression. The center of gravity was actually the lowest in the short irons.

Callaway also got feedback from tour pros that the RAZR X Forged irons had a tendency to dig through impact, while the muscleback irons went more smoothly through the turf. So the new X Forged were designed to have what Williams called “a slightly wider muscleback sole.”

Aesthetically, the 2013 X Forged look more like Callaway’s musclebacks as well. They have a shorter blade length than the RAZR X Forged, but it’s not quite as short as the musclebacks. The 2013 X Forged irons also lose the high heel and sharp toe that gave the RAZR X Forged a polarizing appearance, opting for a face profile closer to the musclebacks.

“Pretty much every player that puts the muscle back iron down like the way it looks,” Williams said.

They X Forged irons go farther than the RAZR X irons as well. They do so, according to Williams, for two reasons:

 • The clubs have one degree stronger lofts (21-degree 3 iron, 46-degree pitching wedge)
 • CG height progression

Despite what many believe about modern iron design, the lofts were not strengthened simply to make the ball go farther. Stronger lofts are a result of tour feedback. Williams said that Callaway sets the lofts on its tour irons based on tour trends. And it’s vital for Callaway to follow the loft trends on tour, since changing the loft of an iron also reduces the bounce on an iron, which can lead to digging. Bending an iron one-degree strong won’t change a iron’s response to the turf that much, but bending a club stronger than that can certainly change things.

“We really design a forged iron product like the X Forged for the tour,” Williams said. “But we know if we get them right, they will work for amateurs as well.”

CG Height progression makes the X Forged long irons go farther because since they’re launching higher, they’re also carrying farther. It also makes the short irons go farther thanks to a more piercing trajectory.

Golfers looking for a tour-quality ball flight will also be happy to learn that the new X Forged irons come stock with a Project X PXi shaft, a lighter weight model of the popular Project X shaft with similar flight characteristics.

“We felt that PXi was the best fit, given the trend of going lighter with iron shafts,” Williams said. “Players are recognizing the value of lighter shafts if [those shafts] can maintain the consistency.”

Williams expects that the X Forged will become Callaway’s most popular iron on tour, knocking some muscleback irons out of the bags of Callaway staff players. Callaway has already received a glowing endorsement from Phil Mickelson, who was not very interested in switching from his musclebacks. He showed up to a recent Callaway ad shoot with a full set of X Forged irons in his bag and said he might put them in the bag in China at the HSBC World Golf Championships.

The 2013 Callaway X Forged irons will retail for $999.99 per set and will be available on Jan. 25, 2013.

Forged is forged and cast is cast. You play one or the other. Just because they change the design on the back of the club makes no difference whatsoever.

These look great. I play the razr x forged now and love them. Can’t wait to hit these though. Not sure how I feel about project x shafts though. I love the feel of my x100s.

I demoed these and the x-hot irons vs many other irons at the golfsmith store the other day. The lighter project x shafts (pxi and 95) made a huge differance. My clubhead speed increased 10-15 mph on average without changing my swing effort (i hit a LOT of balls with all if them so i had a pretty large sample group). I have been a DG guy for 20+ years and I have to say im completely sold on the px stuff. 18 yrds more for the callaway irons with those shafts is huge! Very good feel and control as well.

Inside Collin Morikawa’s recent golf ball, driver, 3-wood, and “Proto” iron changes

are razr x tour irons forged

As you probably know by now, Collin Morikawa switched putters after the first round of The Masters, and he ultimately went on to finish T3.

The putter was far from the only change he made last week, however, and his bag is continuing to change this week at the 2024 RBC Heritage.

On the range of The Masters, Morikawa worked closely with Adrian Reitveld, TaylorMade’s Senior Manager of Tour at TaylorMade, to find the perfect driver and 3-wood setups.

Morikawa started off 2024 by switching into TaylorMade’s Qi10 Max driver, but since went back to his faithful TaylorMade SIM – yes, the original SIM from 2020. Somehow, some way, it seems Morikawa always ends up back in that driver, which he used to win the 2020 PGA Championship , and the 2021 Open Championship .

are razr x tour irons forged

At The Masters, however, Rietveld said the duo found the driver head that allowed “zero compromise” on Morikawa’s preferred fade flight and spin. To match his preferences, they landed on a TaylorMade Qi10 LS 9-degree head, and the lie angle is a touch flatter than his former SIM.

“It’s faster than his gamer, and I think what we found is it fits his desired shot shape, with zero compromise” Rietveld told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at the RBC Heritage.

are razr x tour irons forged

Then, to replace his former SIM rocket 3-wood, Morikawa decided to switch into the TaylorMade Qi10 core model 13.5-degree rocket head, with an adjustable hosel.

“He likes the spin characteristics of that head,” Rietveld said. “Now he’s interesting because with Collin, you can turn up at a tournament, and you look at his 3-wood, and he’s changed the setting. One day there’s more loft on it, one day there’s less loft on it. He’s that type of guy. He’s not scared to use the adjustability of the club.

“And I think he felt our titanium head didn’t spin as low as his original SIM. So we did some work with the other head, just because he liked the feel of it. It was a little high launching, so we fit him into something with less loft. It’s a naughty little piece of equipment.”

are razr x tour irons forged

In addition to the driver and fairway wood changes, Morikawa also debuted his new “MySymbol” jersey No. 5 TP5x golf ball at The Masters. Morikawa’s choice of symbols is likely tied to his love of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.

Not enough changes for you? There’s one more.

are razr x tour irons forged

On Wednesday at the 2024 RBC Heritage, Morikawa was spotted with a new TaylorMade “Proto” 4-iron in the bag. If you recall, it’s the same model that Rory McIlroy debuted at the 2024 Valero Texas Open.

According to Morikawa, the new Proto 4-iron will replace his old P-770 hollow-bodied 4-iron.

“I used to hit my P-770 on a string, but sometimes the distance would be a little unpredictable,” Morikawa told GolfWRX.com. “This one launches a touch higher, and I feel I can predict the distance better. I know Rory replaced his P-760 with it. I’m liking it so far.”
