Safety 1st Extra Large Bed Rail

A bed guard is quite literally a guard for the side of your toddler’s bed . They are mainly used when your toddler first moves from their cot to a bed . They can help your little one get used to a bed after moving from a cot with the safety of four solid sides, to suddenly find themselves in a bed with no sides at all.

Normally they’re smaller than the whole length of the bed and you should place them in the middle of the side of the bed.

We all know how much little ones can wriggle and move while they sleep, so a bed guard protects against your child tumbling out of the bed and onto the floor. Even if you’re using a small toddler bed, which is closer to the floor, falling out of bed can still cause a shock and potentially cause harm.

When do you use a toddler bed guard?

Most bed guards are aimed from about 18 months up to five years, although it totally depends on how you and your child adapt and get on with them. Some children don’t need one or use one for a few months before you take them off, while others like the security and safety for much longer.

Expert advice about bed guards

We spoke to parenting expert Fi Star-Stone about bed guards. She said:

"Bed rails are aimed for children aged two to five years old, and are perfect for little ones moving into a big bed because they not only offer safety - they offer security too.

"Bed guards are a nice gentle way of reassuring little ones who have moved from the four-sided safety of a cot into a single bed.

"I would always advise investing in a bed guard, as leaving the safety of a cot and going straight into a bed with no sides can sometimes lead to accidents. You can remove the guards once you think they are used to their bed and not likely to roll out.

"Ensure bed guards are fitted correctly to avoid the danger of little ones getting trapped down the side.

"Put one side of the bed to the wall if possible for added security - but ensure they can still get out of bed if they want to (the guard is to stop them from rolling out of bed, not getting out of bed)."

What type of bed guard should I buy?

There are various types of bed guards available, from fabric to solid, from temporary and moveable to more permanent.

Most bed guards are made from fabric or mesh, meaning they’re softer when your little one sleeps up against them. If you choose a fabric or mesh bed guard, always make sure they’re breathable. Wooden bed guards act like rails, very similar to the sides of a cot. They're not so popular these days, and we haven't actually featured any in our shortlist.

Make sure you measure your toddler’s bed before you buy a bed guard, and check with the manufacturer that it is suitable. Read up on the instructions for how it fits, and double-check that it will work with your bed.

Also, consider where your toddler’s bed is in the room. Do you need two-bed guards, or is one side up against the wall?

When looking at the height of the bed guard, compare it to the height of the mattress – if you have a thick mattress, the guard might not give as much protection as you expected.

The best toddler bed guards you can buy today

1. safety 1st portable bed rail.

Rrp: £ 24.99

Description

Suitable for slatted beds, this bed rail is easy to fit and folds down, meaning your little one can get into bed with the guard in place. The instructions suggest this isn’t suitable for a divan bed, which is also what a lot of reviewers mention – the mattress needs to sit lower than the frame, with the guard sitting against the lip of the frame.

You can expand and contract this, meaning it’s easy to store or take with you if you’re staying overnight elsewhere. It’s made of breathable mesh, making it comfy and functional.

This has more than 20,000 ratings on Amazon, with an average score of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Size: L101 x W37 x H42cm

Weight: 2.7kg

Suitable for beds that are a minimum length of 156cm with mattress depth between 10cm and 24cm

Review: "This is just what I needed for my daughter to feel freedom and not feel trapped inside a cot, this fits on my daughter's cot bed perfectly I would highly recommend."

2. BabyDan Soft Bedrail

www.johnlewis.com

Made from lightweight steel and covered in nylon, we like how easy this BabyDan bed guard folds up. It’s easy to assemble and fit to the bed, sliding under the mattress, and can be used with slatted wooden beds as well as divans. It comes with a useful travel bag, too.

Do pay attention to the height of the bed guard, and make sure there’s enough clearance when you fold it down – if your toddler’s bed is low to the ground, you might find it doesn’t fold completely before touching the ground – this can make it tricky for little ones to climb in, or for making the bed.

Size: L90 x W37 x D4cm

Weight: 2.75kg

Wipe clean, zero assembly required

Review: "I have purchased three of these! I have five grandsons! The rails are easy to fit, and efficient and make the boys feel comfortable going from cot to bed! Also folds away so very convenient to take when going on holiday!"

3. Dreambaby Phoenix Toddler Bed Rail

This toddler bed guard is suitable for wooden slatted bed frames, or flat beds like divans. It comes with a storage bag, handy if you’re taking it to a friend’s house to sleep over.

Constructing the bed frame is pretty simple, clicking together the poles, and feeding the mesh cover over them – akin to erecting a tent, some might say – there’s a video you can watch if you need assistance. It folds down easily when in place on the bed, meaning your little one can climb into bed with ease – plus it helps when tucking in sheets and blankets, and it doesn’t have to get in the way for storytime.

It also features what the brand calls ‘safety anchors’ to keep the bed guard in place, attaching to the sides of the bed. It has over 2,400 ratings on Amazon, scoring an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Size: L45 x W41 x H9cm

Weight: 2.6kg

Machine washable cover, available in a range of colours

Review: "Fits perfectly on my Malm ottoman double bed. My little girl sleeps right up against it and it's so sturdy. Ideal that it folds down for during the day would definitely recommend it for safe co-sleeping."

4. Lindam Easy Fit Bed Guard

Lindam is a well-known brand when it comes to safety products for children. This bed guard is suitable for wooden slatted beds and divans and folds down easily to allow your toddler to climb into bed. It’s available in grey, pink, and blue colourways.

Some buyers have said it’s a little tricky to assemble, so make sure you read the instructions; also, it can make a creaky noise when folding and unfolding – the sound of the fabric stretching.

Size: L52.2 x W9 x H27cm

Weight: 2.5 kg

Suitable for beds with mattress widths of 76cm-90cm and mattress lengths from 150-200cm

Review: "Excellent bed guard, easy to assemble, the folding front panel is much easier than the bed guards with fixed front panels. We use this both in the house and in the caravan - very versatile."

5. BabyDan Wooden Bed Guard

If you're after a bed guard that's a little more solid, this basic wooden guard fixes to the side of the bed, though it's not suitable for cribs and upper bunk beds. It easily clicks on and off the bed frame and is suitable for tots from 18 months. As it is solid, we'd recommend this for home use, rather than on the go - it won't fold down or collapse for compact storage.

Size: L90 x H44cm

Wipe clean only

Suitable for all beds except cribs and upper bunk beds

Review: "I wasn't sure how this would work but it's excellent - and not too difficult to move down the bed for bedtime story eg for an adult to sit up by the pillow and read to a child. No disadvantages I can think of!"

6. Cuggl Bed Rail

www.argos.co.uk

This bed guard can be used with slatted beds or divans - suitable for single beds, no larger. With a child safety lock, you can be safe in the knowledge your little one is tucked up in bed without the risk of falling out. The safety poles reach under the mattress and can be adjusted to suit different mattress widths.

As a cheap and cheerful option, 91 per cent of Argos customers recommend it, and you'll be pleased to hear it comes in pink and blue colourways too, and options for wide single beds.

Size: L92 x H46cm

Suitable for divans and slatted bed bases

Fits beds L150cm-200cm by W75cm-90cm

Review: "Bought this as grandchildren now outgrown the cot. It was a bit fiddly to get the straps under the mattress (it took 2 of us) but once in place, it was very secure. It is a good size and I am pleased with it."

7. Safetots Wooden Bed Guard

Rrp: £ 51.90

Available in grey, dark grey, white, and natural wood, this bed guard is seriously quick and easy and install. Simply slot the anchor section beneath the mattress and you're good to go. Suitable for most cot, single, and double beds, we particularly love that despite it being wooden, it can be folded down for easy storage. Perfect if you want to be able to store it out the way and store it for your next child when your toddler outgrows it.

Size: L110 x H38cm

Weighs 3.1kg

Fits most beds - ensure the bed rail is min. 16cm taller in height than the mattress and min. 50cm shorter than the length of the mattress.

Review: "I am very happy with this barrier. It's sturdy, moves a bit, but it's expected since it is only held by a mattress (mine is very heavy). My son jumps on it and it's keeping him safe. My mornings are much better since we bought this."

8. Safety 1st Extra Large Bed Rail

Designed to automatically lock once in the upright position, this bed rail is extra-large and ideal for larger children's beds. Measuring 150cm in length, it fits beds with a mattress that measures 200cm in length and 9-24cm in thickness. It's stable and secure thanks to the wide frame that sits beneath the mattress.

Rated an average of 4.6 out of five stars from over 8,000 reviewers on Amazon, customers found it great for double or king-sized beds.

Size: L150 x H40cm

Weighs 2.55kg

Fits children's beds with a mattress that measures 200cm in length and 9-24cm in thickness

Review: "I purchased two of these bedrails to transition my 2-year-old from cotbed to double bed. I was very nervous about her climbing out of the bed and injuring herself. As these rails almost went the length of the bed it’s almost as though she assumed that the end was just a larger version of her cot. She has not once fallen from the cot and doesn’t try to climb the rail. Happy Mommy here!"

What about toddler bed bumpers?

You can also buy bumpers for toddler beds, including some inflatable bumpers, which work in a different way to bed guards. They generally fit on top of the mattress and offer bumpers down the sides of the beds. However, we haven’t included them in our roundup.

There is advice against using bumpers – especially when it comes to cot bumpers – so we have focused purely on guards and rails.  Read more advice from the Lullaby Trust about not using cot bumpers here .

There comes a time in every parent's life when they have to move their kid from a  cot to a cot bed  or a kids' bed. Naturally, that is a stressful process.  You're probably worried your child will fall out of the bed  or won't be able to sleep comfortably.

However, there's nothing to worry about.  This is all part of growing up, and thankfully, you have a chance to make it easier for them.  All it takes is equipping the kids' and cot beds with a bed rail or a baby bed guard.

Now,  choosing the best bed rails and guards can be a bit overwhelming , but don't worry. We've handpicked the best of the best for you.

We also went out of our way to provide you with all the necessary information on bed guards and rails , so when the time comes, you can just go out and find the perfect one on your own. Sounds good? Let's get started then.

Our top bed rails & bed guards

Best Overall: Milliard Bed Bumper Foam Bed Guard

Forget about rolling up towels and tucking them underneath the fitted sheet  with this lovely memory foam bed bumper from Milliard.

If you want a bed guard that's as straightforward as it gets – you get this one.  This 132 cm long 11.5 cm high foam bumper easily fits any mattress, cot bed and bigger , and will help both you and your toddler get a full night of restful sleep.

And, once your child inevitably gets it all wet and dirty,  you'll be able to just unzip the bamboo cover from the bumper, wash it in a machine,  and tuck it right back under the sheets.

Best Value: Safetots Wooden Bed Guard

With no vertical rails to help your child climb out of bed,  Safetots' wooden rail is a good choice for your aspiring little Spiderman.

With a  simple tuck-it-underneath design,  this bed rail is incredibly easy to set up. However,  it doesn't come with any security screws, clamps or anything of sorts, so you'll probably need zip ties  if you want to keep it securely in place.

With that in mind, you probably won't carry this one with you on your travels.

Also,  the minimum mattress length for some of these is 190 cm , as you don't want to keep the railing too close to the headboard, for the aforementioned reasons.

  • Dimensions : 110 x 38 cm, 140 x 38 cm, 140 x 60 cm

Best for Easy Fitting: Venture QFix Bed Guard

Venture's QFix guard might just be one of the easiest bed guards to set up  – once you get over the initial assembly of the actual bed guard. Yes, it comes disassembled, and it is a bit of a drag to put together.

However, once you get past that – it's good times only. The  guard easily and securely attaches to the bottom of a cot bed  or any kids' bed for that matter.

The  sides recline at a push of a button,  but since both of them have to be pressed at the same time to unlock the hinge – you don't have to worry about your child doing this on accident.

Best for Larger Beds: Dreambaby Phoneix Toddler Bed Rail

Dreambaby's Phoenix guard is a mesh guard that works great with larger beds , regardless of whether they have a flat or a slatted base. A recessed base is out of the question though.

This guard, just like most of the other ones,  slides under the mattress , but unlike many other ones, this one has a T-bar for secure attachment for slatted bases.

As for the flat base,  there are straps and disks that utilize tension in order to keep the bed guard securely in place,  but from what we've seen, this method is not as secure as the T-bar.

  • Dimensions : 110 x 45.5 cm
  • Weight : 2.5 kg

Best for Travel: Safety 1st Portable Bed Rail

Imagine having a bed guard that could fit in any suitcase?  Well, you don't have to imagine anymore because this portable bed guard from Safety 1st actually does.

This 101x42x37 cm bed guard actually folds to a 66x42x7 cm package  that seamlessly fits into any suitcase or even a large backpack. It is a perfect travel companion, eliminating the need to search for baby-friendly hotels and rooms with cot beds.

And, if all that wasn't enough,  this one's “installed” in less than 10 seconds,  as it just seamlessly slides under the mattress, staying fairly securely in place during the whole night.

When does your toddler need a child bed guard?

An image of a bed guard attached to a toddler's bed.

You would probably move your child out from a cot after they turn 18 months , so that would be a good time to start looking for a bed rail.

Generally speaking,  your toddler could benefit from a bed guard, rail, or a bumper anywhere between the age of a year and a half up to five years.  After that, or even well before the age of five, your child is more than capable enough to sleep in a big bed.

What to consider when buying bed guards

Before we get into our list of the best bed guards and rails, we wanted to guide you through the entire process of identifying the best rails and guards, and show you exactly what we paid attention to when we were looking for them.

An image of a bed bumper made of memory foam.

Generally speaking, you should choose between memory foam, wood, and mesh.

Memory foam is mostly used for bumpers . These low-profile guards would be tucked underneath the cot bed sheet, and are often used for less active and younger children.

Wood guards are a good choice for both a cot bed and a kids' bed.  They resemble the rails you'd find on upper bunk beds and are often tucked underneath the mattress if bought separately. One thing to keep in mind is to have the rails evenly spaced so that your child doesn't get stuck between them.

Finally, mesh guards are our favourite.  They're super easy to install, they're not expensive, they don't pose a threat to your child, and most importantly, they're incredibly hard to jump over –  unlike memory foam or wood guards and rails.

Most of the time,  a bed rail or a guard will be compatible with pretty much any bed fram e, but then again – you can never know.

The  best way to make sure the railing fits perfectly is to measure the bed and choose the guard accordingly . You won't need an extra-wide bed rail if your child sleeps in a  cot bed . However, if your child sleeps on a regular, single bed, you might need bed rails or bed guards for single bed to properly protect your child from falling out.

Position of toddler's bed

The position of a toddler bed is also something you should pay special attention to.

For example,  if the child's bed is next to a wall – you only need a single child's bed guard.  On the other hand, if your child's bed position is in the middle of a bedroom or far away from a wall – you'll need two to ensure a great night's sleep.

Compatibility

An image of a bed guard compatibility and safety.

While it is true that most guards will be compatible with most beds, some issues might occur.

It is not uncommon for children to sleep on double beds , and if that bed happens to be a divan or an ottoman – you'll probably have some issues attaching the bed guard rail to the side of the bed.

If you can slide the portion of a bed guard for cot bed under a child's mattress – you're probably good to go. If not, you're going to have to look for an alternative.

Portability

You'll probably travel with your child while it's still very young, so considering portability would be a wise thing to do.

Generally speaking,  foam bumpers and mesh guards and rails are the easiest to transport,  so if you know that you're about to travel, or even leave your child with your parents for the night – consider getting one of those.

Maintenance

An image of removable cover of a bed guard bumper.

Finally,  you'll want to make sure that the rails are easily washable and maintained . It is not uncommon for children to chew on bed rails, so it is imperative that you keep them clean for the sake of your child's health.

Wooden rails are generally easiest to keep clean , as all you'll need to do is wipe them clean every now and then. On the other hand,  mesh guards could be a bit tricky to keep clean if the mesh is not removable or machine-washable.  Fortunately, most of the good ones come with removable meshes, so try and get your hands on those.

Tips for buying and using best bed guard

There are three tips we want to share with you when it comes to buying and using a bed guard or a rail.

  • Always do your own research  – Reading through a product description on Amazon won't get you all the necessary information on a toddler bed guard you're interested in. Instead, read the reviews, scan through the comments, and see what the people are saying. If they've used it, they could point you to a potential problem or highlight a benefit you never even knew existed.
  • Safety comes first  – When it comes to installing and using a bed guard – safety comes first. You'll want to get a guard that's easy to install and secure, and the one that won't create a gap between the bed and guard, causing your child to get stuck during the night.
  • Don't place the guard near the headboard  – Parents often worry about their child getting stuck between the rails or between a bed guard and the headboard, which is perfectly reasonable. However, if you just move the guard away from the headboard – you won't have to worry about it.

The advantages of owning best bed guards

Getting a quality bed guard is all fine and dandy, but if you don't actually know what you're getting out of it – what's to point to even getting one?

Well, here's what you get.

  • Never again worry about your toddler's safety  – Something as simple as a bed rail or a mesh guard will have you sleeping like a baby (pun intended). You'll never again have to worry about your child falling from bed, knowing they're well protected by the new bed rail you just bought.
  • A perfect travel companion  – Instead of having to search for a hotel with cot beds and child-safe sleep accommodation, you can just carry your bed guard with you and attach it to any bed the hotel has to offer.
  • It'll last you a really long time  – A well-made bed rail or a guard will easily last you a couple of years, meaning you won't have to buy another one when you decide to have another child. We feel like it's safe to say that a bed rail would be one of the best investments of your life.

And that's all you need to know in order to find the best bed guards and keep your young ones safe! But if you have any questions, either check our the FAQ section below or ask us in the comments.

Spread the word

Faqs about your bed guard.

We want to make sure that you don't leave this place itching your head in confusion or wondering whether you should even get a bed guard or not. So, we decided to answer some of the most frequently asked questions by concerned parents such as yourself.

We're torn between mesh and wood, but considering wood is mostly reserved for rails – we'll cast our vote for mesh.

While the purpose of both is pretty much the same, these two aren't the same thing. A bed rail is essentially a railing for your bed, while a guard could be something as simple as a bumper.

Yes. As long as they're well made and secure, they're safe even for younger babies, although we wouldn't suggest newborns sleeping in large beds at least until they're a year old.

It all depends. Some children are fine with a single bed by the time they turn a year and a half. On the other hand, some kids could be three and still anxious to sleep all by themselves in such a large bed.

As a general rule of thumb, children over the age of five should already be capable of sleeping in single beds without any rails or guards attached to the side.

Foam bed bumpers are pretty safe. The only downside is that parents don't find them secure enough compared to a toddle bed guard because they're not tall enough. However, they're more than secure in most cases.

Sleep usually is easier to figure out once your baby becomes a toddler. EXCEPT when you’re traveling.

Chances are they will outgrow their travel crib or portable bassinet much sooner than their crib at home. If you’re shopping for a portable toddler bed for travel, you will want it to be big enough and last long enough to justify the expense.

Here are our recommendations for the Best Toddler Travel Bed:

The Shrunks Inflatable Toddler Bed

The Shrunks has kind of cornered the market when it comes to inflatable travel beds for toddlers. Their beds do not contain phthalates, BpA, or lead and they don’t squeak. The design includes raised sides so your child feel snug and safe and is less likely to roll off of it. The Shrunks original beds are compatible with standard crib sheets and blankets and they also offer a full twin size . Each inflatable travel bed comes with an electric pump and carry bag. The twin bed weighs just over 10lbs and the regular size weighs 6.6 lbs. When deflated, the bed and pump fit into the carry bag and can be easily packed.

The Shrunks sell a number of custom accessories separately, and extend a 2-year warranty on their products. The maximum weight capacity is 150lbs, so you can get a lot of use out of this purchase. Online reviews for this and all The Shrunks ‘ products are very favourable.

Regalo My Cot

If you (or your toddler) would prefer a more traditional-style cot, the Regalo My Cot is a great choice. It can support the weight of a child up to 75lbs. Its steel construction is very lightweight at just four pounds. The nylon cover is washable and it includes a cotton fitted sheet and a carry case. According to reviews it is easy to fold and unfold, and in its folded state can easily fit into a suitcase for travel.

Although the Regalo My Cot is affordable and durable, they do caution that it’s not meant to be stepped or jumped on. Its hammock-like effect helps restless sleepers to stay on the bed, but if they do roll off it’s very low to the ground.

Joovy FooCot

The Joovy FooCot is another great camping cot-style toddler travel bed that is lightweight, durable, and affordable. It is for children up to 48″ tall or 75lbs, and folds up into its own carrying case. There is also a storage pocket that would be handy for a flashlight or book or sippy of water. The cover does not remove for washing, but it can be spot-cleaned. One reviewer said regular crib sheets fit just fine, but Joovy does sell cot sheets for it as well.

The Joovy FooCot weighs just over six pounds, and the dimensions when folded into its carry case are 24.5″x8″x6″ — plenty small enough to fit into a suitcase or overhead bin. It comes in a variety of fun colours and reviews suggest that kids find it comfy. Most reviewers are very happy with this purchase.

Milliard Portable Toddler Bumper Bed

This portable toddler bed for travel is kind of a compromise if you’re not too sure about an inflatable toddler bed and don’t think your child is quite ready for a camping-style cot. I like the idea of this bed also being used as a play space and possibly to assist with co-sleeping younger babies safely in a (king-sized, obviously) hotel bed. The Milliard Portable Toddler Bumper Bed looks pretty cosy with 7″ high bumpers and soft velour fabric lining inside. The cover is machine-washable and a fitted sheet is included.

The Milliard Portable Toddler Bumper Bed is just over 10lbs and folds down to 25″x27″x14.5″ inches–not tiny but may be ok to pack for a road trip. Once folded you can store stuff inside, like pjs and a teddy. Reviews are very favourable and suggest this is an ideal toddler travel bed for younger children making the transition from crib to bed who aren’t comfortable with the idea of a blow up bed or a camping cot.

IDeep Ultralite Portable Camping Cot

If you’re looking for a portable toddler bed you don’t necessarily need to stick to products specifically for children. The IDeep Ultralite Portable Camping Cot is a full-sized cot that can support the weight of an adult up to 240lbs but only weighs 4lbs and folds down super-small into it’s carry case that’s 18″ by 6″.  The hammock-style is similar to the toddler cots above, so falling out would be no more of an issue than with either of those choices.

The IDeep Ultralite Portable Camping Cot is a bit more expensive than the children’s options mentioned previously, but you will have use of it for a very long time and for more than just your child. According to online reviews, it is pretty easy to set up. But, pay attention to how it disassembles into its case. One reviewer had difficulty with it on uneven ground. But, if you’re using it for home or hotel use, that is unlikely to pose a problem. And if camping is your jam , you’ve got another bed to use!

Disc-O-Bed Portable Bunks

These portable bunks are not for toddlers under three but if you are avid campers and/or need extra beds frequently, the Disc-O-Bed Portable Bunks are a great–albeit heavier and bulkier choice. The bunks can be assembled separately or even as a couch. Together they weigh around 45lbs and each bunk’s weight limit is 200lbs. These portable beds for travel may last your children well into their teen years.

Most parents end up choosing the Disc-O-Bed Portable Bunks because of the increased weight and durability of these travel beds. The reviews are all mostly favourable, and accept the increased cost as worthwhile. Even some shorter adults claim they have a decent night’s sleep on them in a pinch.

The Shrunks Inflatable Bed Rails

Perhaps easier than traveling with a full-on toddler travel bed, bed rails can make any bed a safer way to put your toddler down for the night. The Shrunks Inflatable Bed Rails (sold in a set of two) attach to the mattress with a grippy side and the fitted sheet goes over top. As with The Shrunks Inflatable Toddler Bed , their inflatable bed rails come with a pump and carry-case that can easily fit into your suitcase.

The total weight of the two bed rails, the pump, and the carry case is around two pounds. So it is a really easy way to ensure a safe sleeping spot for your toddler. Most online reviews for The Shrunks Inflatable Bed Rails are favourable, although some complain of leaks that seem to spring up from nowhere. A patch is included with the rails. However, traveling with an extra patch kit or even a roll of duct tape can save the day mid-vacation.

Bed Buddy Bed Rail Guard

The Bed Buddy Bed Rail Guard is also a travel bed rail but it is made out of foam instead of being inflatable. It does squish down to fit in its carry case, and it weighs less than a pound. It installs under the fitted sheet to create a barrier and the foam is free of BPA, phthalates, and flame retardants.

The Bed Buddy Bed Rail Guard is not sold in pairs, so if you want a barrier on either side you will have to order two. They are light but they do take up a bit more space than the inflatable ones. The online reviews are almost entirely positive. Please note that it takes a few minutes for the foam to expand to its full size after being compressed.

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Perfect itinerary for spending a week in Moscow! So many places to visit and it looks like you had a wonderful time. I would love to climb that tower. The views I am sure must have been amazing!

I was lucky enough to see the skyline of Moscow from this TV Tower and it is definitely mind-blowing.

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
