Our Art Vacations

Mary Beth Shaw with illustration from Greece art vacation workshop

Jeannette and Suzy set a new high standard of travel. I joined an ArtWalk Greece with 3 girlfriends. We left Greece with a whole new appreciation of seeing the world by traveling “at the speed of you.” They are fabulous tour leaders. They have a depth of knowledge of the local towns and sites that I have never before experienced. We always felt so well taken care of. We did a lot of walking and art-making. I am looking forward to another Blue Walk in the future!

Travel Journal Art Vacations

Create an experience to remember.

You’ve daydreamed of this: a vacation with time each day to simply create. The destinations are beautiful. The accommodations are welcoming. All the details are taken care of. In the company of like-minded travelers you savor the wonder of the present moment. And you capture it all through your art.

Create as You Travel

Our Art Walk art vacations are the perfect tours for artists of all levels. Talented and engaging teaching artists offer daily classes inspired by stunning locations. Equal parts journey and learning, our art vacations are based on a travel journal format. Art classes are mostly on site. Some programs have “studio” time at our hotels. Space is almost always limited, so you will learn to work with what is available, being able to create wherever and however you may find yourself. Sketchbook, watercolor, collage, and multimedia workshops are all represented in our schedule.

Everyone is Welcome

Join us. Solo travelers love the easy camaraderie our tours provide. First time European travelers and budding artists love the safe, supportive, and welcoming atmosphere. The main requirements are a desire for adventure and gratitude for the opportunity to pursue it.

Travel at the speed of you.

Stretch your legs and expand your experience.

Find a community. Receive and share inspiration.

Return home renewed, accomplished, and feeling better than ever.

Keeping an illustrated travel journal enhances your trip and opens your mind. Everything around me is fresh and beautiful because I’m drawing it, seeing it truly for the first time.

Once you return from your trip, your mind remains full of wonder. A quick flip through your journal’s pages keeps those memories alive.

What our travelers say about their art & culture tours

Faqs about our art and culture tours.

Great art comes from all over the globe, but here are a few hot spots we'd recommend:

  • Italy for the birthplace of the Renaissance
  • Paris for some of the richest art collections in the world
  • Rome for sculptures of all kinds
  • Morocco for artisan markets and performances

Whether you're into painting, sculptures, theatre, music, architecture, or nature, you'll see it up close—in museums, parks, performance halls, and even city bus tours. View any of our trips for the full itineraries.

Italy is home to some of the greatest artists in history—and not just Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. Italy has incredible glass-blowers, playwrights, and crafters. It also has some of the most notable sites from famous works of art, like Shakespeare’s fair Verona, the Amalfi coast, and the Sicilian backdrops for Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic movie The Godfather. Check out our The Art-Lovers Guide to Italy .

When you travel with us, you get a full educational and cultural experience with knowledgeable guides, free time to explore, and all the benefits of traditional group travel, too. Learn more about the Go Ahead Tours difference .

This watercolor painting workshop in Provence is open to both beginners and more advanced painters. There will be classes both in basic watercolor techniques as well as specific travel journaling methods. Travel journaling is the complete opposite of how many of us travel these days: taking photos after photos with our phones. Travel Journaling gives us a chance to slow down, to sketch scenes around us, and to add color to our travel journals. Provence is the artist's dream destination. During the days, we will explore Luberon, and its spectacular countryside of vineyards and orchards, fascinating "perched" hill-top villages, outstanding natural produce and the light of Van Gogh and Cezanne. You will see why artists of all calibers are drawn to this alluring area.   Location: Bonnieux, Provence, France Instructor: John Keeling and Lo Peyron Mathews Cost: $3,590 Sponsor: Alpine Creative Tours Website , email , 970-846-9000

There’s a bookshelf in my studio that holds more than 30 travel sketchbooks. Every time I browse through them, memories of a specific place come flooding back — and not just the sights. Sounds, scents and flavours, snippets of conversations with a farmer, the taste of my morning coffee and brioche — it’s all still there, fresh in my mind, the moment I crack open a sketchbook. That’s what I love best about travel sketching. How the act of putting pencil and paint to paper enriches the total experience, and preserves it forever. I am so excited to teach you in this inspiring place while working outdoors in Plein Air as the Impressionist masters did! Paint the crystal blue Mediterranean waters with breathtaking vistas of the Catalonia coast, a hidden gem fishing village, botanical gardens, and medieval villages. As a painter and colorist, I have learned that the best way to achieve the feeling of light and color in your paintings is to paint outdoors. I will be your guide and teacher for an incredible week of painting, sightseeing, dining, and artistic community while we all learn and grow our artistry during the week. The experience of painting with other artists will be a treasure you carry with you for a lifetime.   Location: Costa Brava, Spain Instructor: Rose Irelan Cost: $3,790 before Nov 30th Sponsor: French Escapade Website , email , 510-483-5713

You probably fell in love with making art before a painting holiday occurred to you. Classroom lessons, online sessions, or time in the studio are typically safe environments in which to learn. But once we venture outdoors to paint, the light can be dramatic, the air is filled with sights, sounds, and smells of nature. While this can all be new, it enriches the painting experience even more. When we arrive on the Costa Brava, my job is to help you capture the nuances of our surroundings with confidence. Even before departure I’ll provide practical pointers on what to bring, what to leave behind. My plein-air workshops are jam-packed with helpful tips to help you make powerful statements through your art.   Location: Costa Brava, Spain Instructor: Randy Hale Cost: $3,790 before Nov 30th Sponsor: French Escapade Website , email , 510-483-5713

Join me for one week of sketching with watercolor in beautiful Provence! Drawing while traveling is the best way to experience and remember a new place. Traveling is also a perfect opportunity to learn or hone your drawing skills. When we see new sights everything strikes us as unusual, memorable and inspiring. We have a natural desire to admire new vistas, taste new flavors, inhale unusual aromas and record these sensations through taking photos, but also through drawing and writing. For me, drawing while traveling is instinctual, and I am eager to share my passion to fully immerse yourself in a new place through the practice of travel sketching.   Location: Provence, France Instructor: Rita Sabler Cost: $3,940 before Nov 30th Sponsor: French Escapade Website , email , 510-483-5713

While learning the importance of oil painting techniques (values, edges, composition, etc.), the joy of actually painting France en plein air won’t get lost on Kathie! The enthusiasm for painting the mountains, lakes and chalets with you will be contagious! Kathie will walk through her process of narrowing down the choices of subject matter and then demo before it’s time for you to get your brushes wet too… and she will be right alongside cheering you on with personal instruction and encouragement! There is a reason why you want to paint. Kathie will work to help you tap that desire by throwing herself into the entire experience and beauty of the French Alps!   Location: Haute-Savoie, France Instructor: Kathie Odom Cost: $3,840 before Nov 30 Sponsor: French Escapade Website , email , 510-483-5713

In this watercolor workshop, I will help you discover new approaches to your works. Values and Color are the two main elements I will focus on and a dramatic sense of design. My personal style is basically a loose and carefree approach. Leaving a lot of the white of the paper, for me, is paramount in my watercolor work. We will work mostly from our own reference photos, in a relaxed studio environment. You can choose which genres best suit your personality - florals, landscapes, structures, etc. Critiques of the work and one-on-one directions will also be a part of this workshop. I hope you will join me in Bruges for this fantastic painting experience.   Location: Bruges, Belgium Instructor: Rae Andrews Cost: $3,840 before Nov 30th Sponsor: French Escapade Website , email , 510-483-5713

Private Tours, Group Classes & Advising

Art Tours, Classes & Advising

Lauren A Kaplan Art Tours provides three distinct services:

Private Tours

I craft in-person, customizable tours of New York’s art and architecture. Whether you are visiting town and want to see the Metropolitan Museum’s greatest hits, or are a New York native seeking a deep understanding of the season’s most talked-about exhibition, I will create the right experience for you. I love working with groups of friends, colleagues, and families too!

Group Classes

I lead virtual and in-person classes covering special exhibitions and relevant themes. All classes are 90 minutes long. Virtual classes meet on zoom, and in-person classes meet at museums and galleries around the city. All classes are packed with information, but they are also interactive and include lots of time for discussion.

Art Advisory

I provide advising for individuals hoping to start or expand an art collection. I will work with you to figure out your taste and budget, and I am always thrilled to bring more art into your daily life.

In all cases, my goal is to blend education with wit and enthusiasm, ensuring a truly memorable experience. In the end, you will not only gain tangible information, but will also become a more savvy consumer of culture.

See what people are saying about my art tours:

“Having a person who is steeped in the art world provides a window to another dimension that is much deeper than what lies on the surface.”

“Lauren is top of her game. Knowledgeable, fun, friendly — a total trifecta. You won’t find anyone better”

“I have now taken 3 trips through different worlds of art with Lauren including the Met, the Whitney and a Chelsea gallery tour. Each was a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable time”

A Recent Interview

I recently sat down with Mark Nimar, of The West Side Spirit, to discuss some of the ways my practice has evolved throughout COVID and how becoming a mom has changed my approach to teaching and art history. Read more here !

In December of 2016, I was interviewed by Michael Shaw, an LA-based artist, for his podcast,  The Conversation.  You can hear the interview here . At the time, we talked about my pedagogical approach to teaching art history, giving tours to different audiences—small and large, young and old—and what I love (and hate) about living in Brooklyn and working mostly on the Upper East Side. I just re-listened as a means of reflecting upon how my work has changed over the past six years. The answer is: a lot.

On Kawara: Killer (and Marker) of Time

On Kawara’s Guggenheim retrospective was a surprising revelation, far more powerful–and poignant–than I’d previously expected. The artist, who died last year, was born in Japan on December 24, 1932, forcing him to experience the horrific bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki when he was a teenager. Though he’d initially wanted to be a scientist, witnessing the dangerous side of scientific advancement changed his mind. After a brief career as a figurative surrealist, Kawara destroyed his early work, left Tokyo for Paris then New York, and landed on a practice that would endure for nearly fifty years. His subject was time, and his goal was to record its passage.

LA Art Tours

Los Angeles Arts District – Graffiti, Mural and Street Art Tour

A walking tour of the murals, street art and graffiti art of the famous Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. The Arts District has been the home of artists in Los Angeles for decades, and has long been a nexus for the resident artists living in funky art lofts and the myriad of graffiti and street artists who come to paint and create on the walls and alleys of the district.

Your guides are all local street artists, taking you through their world, their own art, and the art of their crewmates, collaborators, friends (and even rivals.) You’ll learn a bit of technique, a bit of history, all while viewing a wealth of amazing art…from the tiniest art tags and yarn bombs to building size murals by the world’s best artists.

This is a 100% authentic, genuine and unvarnished journey into the world and culture of Los Angeles graffiti and street art.

All the Details…

  • Map and Parking

Your guide is a real artist and longtime member of the Arts District Community. Living and creating art in the area for decades, each one is an expert on the history, culture, art, and artists that made the Arts District an important part of the Los Angeles creative community for decades.

The tour includes over 100 individual works of art, from building sized murals to amazing hidden treasures that you would never find without a knowledgable expert leading the way.

The tour starts with a wealth of information about urban art history and technique, as you view works from local masters and globally recognized talents.

In addition to the amazing art, the group will visit other iconic spots such as ArtShare, The Container Yard, Arts District Co-op, The American Hotel, Joel Bloom’s Spot, and the former site of Al’s Bar.

The tour ends back where it started, giving you a chance to browse the  Arts District Co-Op or head to one of the many dining options in the area (your guide will be happy to give suggestions.)

How far do we walk?   Approximately 2 hours of walking at a slow pace, covering about 2 miles.

Does the tour start on time? Yes. We suggest arriving at least 10 minutes early to insure you don’t miss the beginning. There are benches to sit on at the start. If you need to use a restroom prior, Urth Cafe is 2 blocks away from our start location.

What if I’m late? The guide will still be near the start for the first 15 minutes of the tour, showing the art work on Colyton/Palmetto. If you are unable to locate them, you can try calling 310-503-2365 (though we may not be able to pick up if leading a tour.)

Gratuity/tip?  Tips are always appreciated by our guides, but never required. If you want to demonstrate your appreciation to the guide for that job well done, a tip is very welcome.

What if it rains?  We still happily do the tour in the rain (murals actually photograph much better under dark skies.) We’ll even bring a few extra umbrellas for those wthout. Only in the event of severe weather (does that even happen in LA?) will we cancel a walking tour.

Will we see art by (insert name here?)  You may. If its in the Arts District, you’ll likely visit it. But the routes can vary slightly, so if you expected a particular piece of art, and didn’t get to see it, your guide will gladly point you in the right direction after the tour (or break the news gently if that piece is long painted over.)

  • Please arrive 10 minutes early as the tour starts on time.
  • Just tell the guide your name. No need to print out the ticket or confirmation email.
  • ACTIVITY TAKES PLACE RAIN OR SHINE: The activity runs regardless of weather conditions. In the rare situation where we are forced to cancel the event, ticket-holders will be allowed to reschedule to another time (subject to availability) or offered a full refund.
  • ACTIVITY TAKES PLACE OUTDOORS: Dress appropriately for the weather.

Cancel/Rescheduling Policy

  • We understand that your plans sometimes change. That is why we try to be as flexible and accommodating as possible.
  • Prior to 72 hours before tour time, a full refund can be given.
  • Sorry, no refunds within 72 hours of tour start time. Our guides need to get out of work and other commitments to lead the tours, so we commit to paying them whether guests show up or not.
  • Up to 24 hours before a scheduled tour you can reschedule for a different date. We only allow one reschedule per booking.

The tour starts at the corner of Colyton and Palmetto in the Los Angeles Arts District. You can use the address of 527 Colyton St , Los Angeles 90013 for the sake of mapping, but please don’t go knocking on the door to the building looking for us. We don’t own it. We’re artists, not multi-millionaires.

There is a small green space with park benches in front of the building, at the corner. Your guide will meet you there at the tour start time.

There is free street parking in the area (Seaton, Colyton and Palmetto.) If you can’t locate a street spot, there are pay lots:

498 Seaton St 405 S Hewitt St 12 56 Palmetto St

Immerse yourself in the traditional ceramics and vibrant art scene of Japan while on our Pottery and Art Tour. Japan's ceramics are celebrated the world over for an elegant simplicity in their designs; its artisans honed their craft in hidden pottery villages and private workshops across the country for over 400 years. Using a range of techniques and traditions passed down through families over many generations and expressing styles that offer a sense of tranquil harmony with the natural world, exquisite Japanese porcelain was once a luxury restricted to the rich but now can be enjoyed by all. Ceramics form just a single facet of Japanese art, in a creative world that is vibrant and varied, spanning centuries of creative expression up to the modern age, and includes drawing and painting, sculpture, calligraphy, architecture, and much more. These tours of Japan covers a wide range of Japanese art, with an especial focus on ceramics, in 14-day and 17-day itineraries. Explore the pottery culture of Japan with visits to hidden pottery villages - each with their own unique ceramic styles. Tour Karatsu, home to Karatsu-ware and the ruins of a number of old-fashioned climbing kilns which produced a simple, sturdy ceramics with an earthy tone. Arita (and nearby Imari) is the birthplace of Japanese ceramics, and is famed for producing elegant porcelain that was popular in 17th and 18th-century Europe. Bizen produces Bizen-ware, a kind of heavy, unglazed porcelain with a rustic appeal. We also explore Sasebo (for Mikawachi porcelain created by the "sometsuke" technique), and Hasami (known for making sturdy, affordable porcelain for common people). We visit the pottery districts of Kyoto for Kiyomizu-ware (a magnificent porcelain from the ancient capital city), and visit the historic home / workshop of one of Kyoto's foremost ceramic artists - Kawai Kanjiro. We include a Kintsugi Experience to learn the art of "golden joinery" that mends broken pottery with shining lacquer. And travelers looking to find their own treasured souvenir won't miss out: browse the Antique shops in the streets of Shinmonzen and Furumonzen. And during our extended itinerary, you will be able to explore the ceramic galleries in Tokyo's upscale Ginza district. Ceramics aside, our tours aim to immerse you in the world of Japanese art at Naoshima Art Island, which features modern galleries created by popular architect Tadao Ando, as well as the Benesse House, a unique fusion of hotel and art gallery. You will experience the modern architecture in Osaka with a Guided Walking Tour, and we include visits to top museums like the Adachi Museum of Art and Ohara Museum of Art, with the Nezu Museum, Kawaguchiko Muse Museum, Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, and Mori Art Museum included in the extended tour. And what is a trip to Japan without sightseeing some of the country's historic landmarks? The temples and gardens of Kyoto, the Gion Geisha District, historic Osaka Castle, the idyllic Kurashiki Canals, Kobe's classic Chinatown, gorgeous Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu, and many more time-honored treasures are included for your enjoyment. Our Tokyo extension features even more must-sees, such as Asakusa Sensoji Temple, Hamarikyu Garden, Imperial Palace East Gardens, and views of Mount Fuji (in clear weather) from Oishi Park. Our dining and accommodation also reflect the tour's Pottery and Art theme, with such experiences as a lunch at Arita House (a Japanese restaurant using Arita-ware pottery), a meal of Kyoto cuisine with Maiko entertainment, and a couple nights at an onsen ryokan offering a traditional Kaiseki dinner. Transport for the tour is facilitated by our comfortable private coaches, and you will travel in the company of one of our knowledgeable and friendly English-speaking guides, who are on hand to help you navigate the country, and who share a passion for Japanese traditional pottery and art. Go explore American art Beyond the Walls, a virtual reality experience that transports you directly into the galleries of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.  Beyond the Walls blends photorealistic 3D capture imagery of artworks from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection with augmented elements which let you interact with and learn about the museum’s collection using a headset and handheld controller.

Beyond the Walls  is a high fidelity, immersive museum experience, and is compatible with Oculus and Vive headsets.  Available for FREE download after July 15.

Tips for a Great Virtual Reality Experience

  • The experience requires use of a VR headset, so find a place where you are free to move and rotate safely.
  • To “click” on an a teleport marker within the space, press the trigger, point to the teleport location with your handheld controller and release the trigger.
  • Although headphones are not required, they are highly recommended for the audio narration track and ambient sound of the media artworks.
  • Although a VR headset can be used at any age, we recommend this experience for 13 years of age and older.

Learn more about the artworks from Beyond the Walls at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

This virtual museum presents a selection of unique paintings, sculpture, and multimedia artworks for you to engage and interact with as you freely explore the museum’s east wing from inside a VR headsets. Four of the museum’s artworks serve hotspots which feature a little bit of extra VR “magic”:

Frederic Edwin Church

art tours

Frederic Edwin Church,  Aurora Borealis ,  1865, oil on canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum

In this painting, Frederic Edwin Church has taken the aurora borealis—ethereal, dynamic, and alien—and captured it in oil paint, making you believe that you are standing underneath that phenomenon, witnessing the colors reflected off the ice. In VR, you can stand closer to the painting than might ever be permitted in real life, allowing you to examine its texture and observe its rich custom frame. VR users standing in front of the painting can trigger a teleportation hotspot which sends them to a remote mountain in Iceland, where they are suddenly in a dark landscape, looking around at jaw-dropping, 360-degree 6K video footage of an actual aurora blazing in the sky, provided by designer and photographer Olafur Haraldsson. The ability to compare and contrast the two scenes offers rich opportunities for learning and observation.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens

art tours

Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Roman Bronze Works,  Adams Memorial ,  modeled 1886-1891, cast 1969, bronze, Smithsonian American Art Museum

In 1885, Marian Hooper “Clover” Adams, an amateur photographer and the wife of the writer Henry Adams, committed suicide by drinking poisonous chemicals used to develop film. Her grieving husband commissioned prominent sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a memorial to her that would express the Buddhist idea of nirvana, a state of being beyond joy and sorrow. Saint-Gaudens modeled a powerful shrouded figure, and then worked closely with architect Stanford White, who designed a secluded, contemplative setting for Clover’s gravesite in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.. Decades later, the Smithsonian American Art Museum acquired a bronze cast made after the original in the cemetery. When standing in front of SAAM’s bronze cast in VR, you can choose to teleport to Clover’s actual gravesite, coming face-to-face with the same sculpture, but this time in the context of the private outdoor memorial for which it was originally intended. Soft sunshine filters through a bank of trees, which move softly in the background, and the bench surrounding the sculpture allows for a moment of quiet contemplation. Flashing back and forth between the museum’s version and the outdoor version, you can notice the differences, sometimes subtle, that distinguish the two casts, and the effects of weather on the outdoor installation.

Hiram Powers

art tours

Hiram Powers,  Model of the Greek Slave ,  1843, plaster and metal pins, Smithsonian American Art Museum

The original marble sculpture of the Greek Slave propelled its artist, Hiram Powers, to international stardom. The Greek Slave was almost immediately associated with the anti-slavery movement in the United States, as abolitionists used images of it to promote their cause. The 3D model that appears in the VR app was rendered from a scan of the original plaster model that dates to 1843; in fact, this VR edition is a not work that exists in the real world at all. The presence of this sculpture in VR provides an opportunity to draw parallels between contemporary 3D scanning technology and nineteenth-century mechanical reproduction techniques, and to talk about the slippery (and often unhelpful) concept of “the original,” when it comes to sculpture.

art tours

Alex Prager,  Face in the Crowd ,  2013, three-channel video installation, color, sound; 11:52 minutes, Smithsonian American Art Museum

The only contemporary artwork to appear in the Beyond the Walls  VR experience is a selection from a video installation by Los Angeles-based artist Alex Prager. When you experience it in the physical museum, Face in the Crowd is installed in a black box gallery, where video plays asynchronously on three of the walls. The experience in VR looks no different, with one notable exception: the artist herself is standing in the room with you. You can walk up to Prager (or around her—she was volumetrically scanned and has been fully rendered in three dimensions) as she tells you about the inspiration for her artwork as you experience it “together.”  Prager’s artwork deals with the anxiety of being swept up by the masses while trying to create and maintain a sense of self—conditions long present in the physical world—and how this anxiety can be amplified in the virtual spaces we inhabit today.

The World’s First Entirely Virtual Art Museum Is Open for Visitors

VOMA—the Virtual Online Museum of Art—is a free and fully immersive art experience

Jennifer Nalewicki

Travel Correspondent

lead image VOMA

As museums have been forced to close their doors in the midst of Covid-19, many of these cultural institutions have proven just how nimble they can be, temporarily shifting their exhibitions from in-person events to online-only experiences. However, one museum in particular is waging its bets that virtual programming will be the new way of presenting art to a wide audience.

Launched just last week, the Virtual Online Museum of Art (VOMA) is the world’s first museum of its kind. More than just an online gallery, VOMA is 100 percent virtual, from the paintings and drawings hanging on the walls to the museum’s computer-generated building itself, giving viewers an entirely new way of experiencing art that transports them to an art space without having to leave their computers.

The idea for VOMA came about during the early stages of the internet—1999 to be exact—when Stuart Semple, the museum’s creator and an artist himself, dreamt up the concept to create an online museum. “When I was a teenager, I decided to make an online gallery,” Semple says, quickly admitting that the idea soon failed, chalking it up to the fact that his vision was a little bit too early for its time. Plus, back in the late '90s virtual technology was nothing like it is today.

Born in Bournemouth, England, Semple grew up having an eye for art. He studied fine arts at Bretton Hall College at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and built a successful career as an artist, showing his body of work, which contains paintings, drawings, multimedia and print, in 15 international solo exhibitions and more than 40 group shows . Now, at the age of 40, he's shifting his focus back to where he started 20 years ago by giving hi s idea for a virtual museum a second go.

“I was thinking about how art should be accessible online, but was disappointed with what I was seeing,” he says. “Because of Covid-19, I was seeing artwork grabbing onto tech in different ways, like taking a virtual walk in a park. I started thinking about putting my original idea back out there. And with CGI, I can make an experience you can live right now.”

This isn’t the first time one of Semple’s wild ideas has made headlines. In 2016, he made waves by creating a paint pigment dubbed “the world’s pinkest pink.” Teaming up with Emily Mann, an architect, and Lee Cavaliere, an art consultant and former curator of the London Art Fair, the trio built VOMA from the ground up in about six months’ time with the help of a team of programmers, architects and video game designers.

“We were seeing all these museums uploading their offerings to digital spaces, such as the [ Google Arts & Culture project],” he says. “I don’t want to be rude, but it didn’t feel like it was really there. I’d be looking at a Monet and the head would be chopped off. I was inspired, because I think we could do better.”

The result is a cultural experience unlike anything else online today. VOMA's creating some media buzz, with Cat Olley of Elle Decoration describing it as a space with “ a grounded, familiar feel ” that can “ hold [its] own alongside conventional cultural centers. ” Gabrielle Leung of Hypebeast commends VOMA for “not only [addressing] the problems of attending museums with social distancing measures in place, but also more complex issues about who has access to major cultural institutions in the first place.”

Visiting VOMA is simple. First viewers must install the free VOMA program onto their computers. From there, they can explore two galleries featuring works by nearly two dozen artists, including Henri Matisse, Édouard Manet, Li Wei, Paula Rego, Luiz Zerbini, Lygia Clark, Jasper Johns and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Cavaliere, the museum’s director and curator, worked closely with some of the world’s most prestigious museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Using high-res images provided by each institution, the VOMA team made 3-D reproductions of each piece. “We don't need to transport any paintings [on loan],” Semple says. “We're literally taking the photos and using computers to create 3-D reproductions, which adds in depth and lets viewers see [the reproduction] from all angles.”

The result is a 360-degree, fully immersive experience that lets museumgoers get as close as they want to, say, Manet’s Olympia or Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights . Using a computer's arrow buttons, a visitor can virtually “walk” around the museum, zooming in on different works of art. The user-friendly setup feels much like a computer game.

VOMA is one of the latest examples of how museum content is going digital, joining the likes of other popular sites and apps like Smartify . Dubbed the “Shazam for the art world,” Smartify offers free audio tours from a database of more than two million artworks from some of the world's most esteemed museums and cultural institutions. Anna Lowe, the app's co-founder, says that being able to access art digitally is important, especially when it comes to reaching a global audience.

“ The advantage of something like VOMA or [other virtual museum experiences] is the reach and engagement you can have with a global audience, ” Lowe says. “ But I think the key thing about physical museums, and the main reason that people go to museums, isn't for a learning experience, but to be social. I think that's the biggest challenge for [virtual visits] is how do you move people through a space without it feeling like you're just scrolling through a site. ”

hallway

This point is one of the things that VOMA's creative team took into account when building its user experience, making it as lifelike as possible.

“[VOMA’s] zoom functionality is crazy,” Semple says. “Normally, you can’t get your nose right up to the canvas, because there’s a line of tape and a security guard watching you. We recreate each artwork so that it’s 3-D. You can look around and see the sides of each work, which you can’t do [in other online art galleries].”

Not only are the displays interactive and provide in-depth information about each artwork, but the museum building and its waterfront surroundings change.

“[Architect Emily Mann] built VOMA so that the museum experience changes depending on the weather and the time of day,” he says. “VOMA is her vision of what a space for an art museum should look like. Every single tree leaf she created from scratch, and the light of each gallery changes throughout the day and plays into the space. It’s fantasy, but it’s also real.”

architecture

Another aspect that makes VOMA stand out from other museums is its mission to be more inclusive. While many museums have been accused of a severe lack in representation of work by women and BIPOC artists, VOMA intends to feature a diverse group of artists on a regular basis.

“We want to highlight voices that haven’t been heard and seen,” he says. “We are featuring artists from around the world, and not just Western artists.”

As the months progress, VOMA plans to open additional galleries to help accommodate such a diversity of artists. The museum, which boasts a permanent collection of more than 20 works, will also feature temporary exhibitions, such as the current “ Degenerate Art ,” which, according to the museum, “is a recreation of an exhibition held by the Nazis in Munich in 1937 denouncing the work of ‘degenerate’ artists.” It features pieces by Otto Dix, George Grosz and Max Beckmann, to name a few, shining a light on the lingering effects of oppression in the art world.

VOMA’s new take on the art experience has proven so popular that, during the September 4 launch, the website’s servers completely crashed while the first visitors tried “entering” the museum.

“At one point there were over 130,000 people trying to access it at the same time,” Semple says, “and we had to make the sad decision to take it down.”

Luckily, the kinks were worked out and VOMA is up and running again.

Semple believes that VOMA is just a taste of the future of art museums. “We are at an unprecedented moment in time,” he writes on VOMA's Kickstarter page. “Due to [Covid-19], we have seen the art world have to adjust, and as a result, we are able to enjoy online viewing rooms, zoom visits to artist studios and see a plethora of museums bringing images of their collections to their websites.” While he admits these changes have been exciting, Semple feels the need for a whole new kind of museum—“one that is born digitally,” he adds.

“VOMA has been designed from the ground up to work in a digital future,” he writes. “A future that is open and accessible to all.”

Join MIT List Visual Arts Center on a public art walking tour showcasing the MIT Public Art Collection across the east side of campus.

View select artworks and consider how art and the architectural environment have enhanced MITs campus design on this tour featuring renowned contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso , Alicja Kwade and Cai-Guo-Qiang .

MIT’s Percent-for-Art Program , administered by the List Visual Arts Center, now allocates up to $500,000 to commission art for each new major renovation or campus construction project. The policy was formally instituted in 1968, but earlier collaborations between artists and architects can be found on MIT’s campus. When architect Eero Saarinen designed the MIT Chapel in 1955, sculptor Theodore Roszak designed the Bell Tower and sculptor Harry Bertoia designed the Altarpiece . In 1985, architect I.M. Pei and artists Scott Burton, Kenneth Noland, and Richard Fleischner collaborated on Percent-for-Art projects for the Wiesner Building and plaza, home to the MIT List Visual Arts Center and the Media Laboratory.

This program is free, but registration required.

This program is weather dependent. Registered attendees will receive an email the day before the tour date if needed to cancel due to weather conditions.

Bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils. Endless shelves of books. A book elevator. These are just some of the highlights of the behind-the-scenes tours of Watson Library that are offered as part of Date Night at The Met. Currently, this tour is offered one evening per month (please check online for exact dates and times). For those who can’t make it in person, here are a few tour highlights.

Watson Library is the Museum’s main art research library. We’re open to visiting researchers, college-age and above. You can register for a library account online, search our online catalog, Watsonline , and request books in advance of your visit. Our FAQs for Visitors provide helpful and important information for a successful research visit.

Library signage reading "to folios" with an arrow pointing down

There are many different signs you will see when touring the library stacks, but can you spot this hand-lettered sign from forever ago?

book of sailors’ valentines

You can view themed pop-up displays of books from the library’s extensive collection. One such book is this fascinating book of sailors’ valentines. Fondas, John. Sailors’ Valentines (New York: Rizzoli, 2002)

In addition to a tour of the library’s public spaces, we’ll take you down to our closed library stacks which are usually not open to visitors. You will be welcomed by the sight of thousands of books and can peruse any of the aisles. You may even hear a ghost story or two. If time allows, you can sneak a peek into our Book Conservation Lab.

After ascending from the stacks, take some time to view our exhibition—currently on view is Isms and Non-Isms: Recent Acquisitions by Watson Library . For our date night tours, we also prepare one-night-only themed pop-up displays of books from our collections.

Social Justice Self-Guided Tour

Long before I had applied to this internship, I thought that a social justice self-guided tour would be a really interesting way for guests to engage with the galleries. As a Social Justice major at the university, I am instantly drawn to these themes in artwork. When I first saw Red April by Sam Gilliam and I knew that the piece needed to be included in this tour.

holding the self-guided tour and the front page is shown

Once I got the position as the Campus Engagement Coordinator, this was one of the projects that I really wanted to take on. However, I had not realized how much work goes into these tours. I needed to find items on display that connected with my theme, research the pieces and the artists, and write up the tour.

My biggest challenge was coordinating this tour around the rotation of artworks in the gallery. We rotate artworks about every three months in order to preserve more light sensitive pieces. With the rate of the rotations, I needed to be able to plan how long the pieces I selected would be up in the galleries to correspond with my tour.

Ultimately, my project came together and I could not be more proud of how it turned out! This was a valuable experience in terms of using both my major and my passion for the arts. Moreso, I hope that future editions of a Social Justice self-guided tour will be created and used at the museum. I know that not everyone instantly thinks of themes of social justice when looking at art, but I hope this tour helped put some pieces into a new perspective.

Incase you were not able to grab a copy of the tour in person, the entire self-guided tour is featured in the photo gallery of this post!

What Taylor Swift's new album means for her $1 billion fortune

  • Taylor Swift's new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," is almost guaranteed to be a bestseller.
  • But no matter how well it does, it won't be the way Swift earns most of her money this year.
  • The remaining leg of her Eras Tour is expected to add much more to Swift's billion-dollar fortune.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift released her new album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," at midnight, and, in what should be no surprise to anyone on this planet in the year 2024, it caused a scene.

Her album garnered millions of streams within hours. There's almost no doubt it'll top the Billboard chart like the 13 Swift albums before it.

But no matter how many platinum certifications it collects or streams it racks up on Spotify, "The Tortured Poets Department" won't be Swift's biggest money-maker this year.

The remaining leg of her Eras Tour — kicking off in Paris next month and running through December — is instead expected to be what contributes most to her fortune, which Bloomberg estimated to be $1.1 billion last year.

"Live music is the engine of the global music business," Clayton Durant, an adjunct professor at NYU Steinhardt's Music Business Program who's the founder of CAD Management, told Business Insider. "Her tour is probably going to earn 10 to 15 times more than her streaming."

Swift's Eras Tour brought in more than $1 billion in ticket sales last year over its 66 dates. By the end of this year, she's set to have played another 86. Swift's cut is unknown, but based on industry standards, she'll surely earn nine figures in 2024 from ticket sales.

Concerts don't only bring in money from ticket sales.

Pollstar estimates that Swifties spend an average of $40 a head on merch at her concerts — that adds up to about $175 million in gross merch sales last year. Swift's camp keeps the majority of that.

Bloomberg estimated that between box office and merchandise, Swift pocketed $225 million, pre-tax, from her first 57 Eras Tour dates. Career earnings from ticket sales and merchandise account for 34% of her total net worth, while earnings from music streaming and sales account for 18%, Bloomberg estimates.

Related stories

Swift isn't alone in making money on the road.

In 2021, the last year Billboard made a list of music's top earners, seven out of the 10 top money makers earned more than half of their income from touring.

But the music industry didn't always function this way. Before the advent of streaming, musicians made most of their fortune selling CDs, cassette tapes, and vinyl records .

"Physical music sales made up the bulk of artists' revenue pre-streaming, and that revenue was what enabled artists to tour. These days, the equation has flipped," Tatiana Cirisano, a senior music-industry analyst at MIDiA, told BI over email.

Streaming made listening to recorded music much cheaper. For less than the price of one CD — or for free, illegally or with ads — people could get all the songs they wanted.

"The moment Napster hit, it changed the paradigm, and it really honestly diluted the value of music," Durant said.

To be sure, Swift is still making tens of millions, if not more, on streaming and record sales each year — more than almost any other artist on the planet.

Streaming services such as Spotify pay out artists on a pro-rata model: There's a pot, made up of subscription and ad revenue, paid out to artists each year. Those with the biggest share of the platform's total streams get the biggest piece of it.

But "if you're an individual artist, you have to have a pretty massive audience to be able to earn a meaningful share of that revenue — which is paid out to you after your label gets its cut," Cirisano said.

Last year, Swift was the most streamed artist on both Apple and Spotify. One of every 78 songs streamed in the US last year was a Swift song, according to the music-data firm Luminate. She'll probably rank at or near the top again, between " The Tortured Poets Department " and a streaming lift from the second leg of her Eras Tour.

Swift is also set to earn more than most artists from physical music sales. Last year, she was responsible for one out of every 15 vinyl records sold, according to Luminate. Cirisano said Swift's rabid followers saw physical records as "a symbol of fandom" and a way to support Swift.

That said, without Eras, Swift would just be a poor centimillionaire.
