Everything to see and do on the Northern Beaches B-line

b line travel

With Summer approaching, the Northern Beaches are sure to be a hotspot for tourists having a swim and inner westie students crawling out from the shadows to enjoy some much-needed sun. While there are many ways you can travel across the great coat hanger in the harbour — by ferry, car, or bike — the most efficient and infamous is the B-Line. Introduced in 2017, the B-Line is effectively a train service, with frequent buses at regular times, running round the clock to dedicated stops and always remaining reliable at the earliest or latest of hours. The B-Line is the Beaches’ connective tissue to the rest of Sydney.

With 1276 people out of 38,653 attending Usyd, and only 7 receiving Honi Soit in the mail, I presume the majority of people reading are not familiar with The Beaches or its famous bus route. So allow me to provide you with this helpful guide, and show you all there is to see and do on the Northern Beaches B-Line. For brevity’s sake, I won’t discuss every stop, rather the ones with the most history and intrigue. Don’t forget to tap on!

Your journey begins at Wynyard, and when first boarding the B-Line there are a few basic rules of thumb to keep in mind as you clamber through the doors and rush to get a seat. These will be conveniently ordered as a series of DO’s and DON’Ts.

DON’T: Cut in line. There is usually a long queue for the B1, and while at any stop it is rude to cut in line, it carries a particular sting for the B1 as the wait for the next bus is (at most) 10 minutes. Just be patient and don’t be a dick.

DO: Sit on the top part of the bus. The difference between the top and bottom of the bus is night and day, and it is an unspoken rule that only plebs sit on the bottom. You may as well catch a regular bus if you are going to cuck yourself like this.

DO: Hold on to the railings walking up the stairs. Too many times has the bus started moving without my knowledge, causing me to fall over and incur many bodily injuries in the process. Only ignore if you’re a daredevil, or have a death wish.

DO: Sit at the front seat on the top. Objectively the most fun you could ever have.

DON’T: Plug your charger into the USB port without checking for gum. Always fondle the port in case of sticky ooey-gooey dangers.

Once the B-Line is in action you will careen across the Harbour Bridge, and it is here that your B1 journey starts proper.

Neutral Bay Junction

The North Shore carries with it many delights, and once you hit your first stop, Neutral Bay, you can go off exploring. The Neutral Bay B-Line stop features an array of Op-shops nearby, with fancy pieces of clothing priced expensively. Alight from this stop if you have some cash to splash, or would like to visit Luna Park.

Spit Junction

Following this is Spit Junction. This stop gives you easy access to Taronga Zoo, and it’s soothing to peer out the windows at the area’s mansions and manors. You can also visit the small micronation, the Principality of Wy, forged out of council disputes over the owner wanting to extend his driveway. Spit Junction is named for its connection to the Spit Bridge, which acts as the split between the Northern Beaches and the North Shore. Once you’ve crossed that bridge, you enter a new phase of your journey.

Perhaps the most liminal stop on your journey, Manly Vale is a semi-industrial hellscape, with large buildings that stretch far and wide and distend down from the heavens. It is a purgatory-like space, a transitory stop between the ritz and glamour of the North Shore and the rundown surfy vibes of The Beaches. The wide streets and large architecture dwarfs the average visitor. On your visit, you can have a bite to eat at KFC, grab some drinks from Dan Murphy’s, or fill your home with the many furniture and homeware stores that litter the streets — from Freedom, Bing Lee, Harvey Norman, Salvos and Snooze. It’s amazing what a little bus trip can do. Besides that there is Manly Dam, which in keeping with the transitory nature of the suburb, is a place where adolescents enter into semi-adulthood. 15 year olds often host parties and taste their first sips of alcohol stolen from their parents’ liquor cabinet.

Warringah Mall

Next up is the Warringah Mall bus stop, its neon blue outline acting as the pearly gates to the eponymous mall itself. Inside are many delights — from the Camera House that often gives out a free roll of 35mm film, to the food court which has one of Sydney’s best Banh Mi restaurants. There’s even a nearby Hoyts which has a large Batman sculpture that always fascinated me as a kid. Its lack of direct references to any adaptations thus far you can only wonder what it once promoted.

Located at this stop is a large private medical centre that nobody uses, one built by the Liberals in order to win seats in the area, closing a few public hospitals in the process. At the same time, they built a massive bridge to cross the road, despite there already being a convenient crosswalk. Upon the initial unveiling of the bridge, nobody used it. It was a ghost town on the bridge, with trash quickly piling up inside. Frustrated by this, large metal gates were placed at the crosswalk, preventing pedestrians from using it, despite the lights still switching as if people were there. This stop serves as an example of the M.O. of the Liberal Party: build stuff we don’t need, in areas that don’t need it, inconveniencing everyone and spending a whole lot of money in the process.

This stop is an exciting convergence or vector point for all people on The Beaches — arriving and departing, to and fro from Manly, Chatswood and wherever else. Youths often use it as a meeting spot before converging somewhere else on a Friday or Saturday night. People of all sorts of backgrounds visit and mingle and live here, with the area boasting the highest Tibetan population in Australia of about 300 residents. There are many great local restaurants and friendly grocers to check out.

I can recall fights breaking out, robberies occurring on shop corners, high schoolers doing TikTok dances and eshays trying to act intimidating. Here you can find a gentrified shopping district with modern-looking shops, a glossy facade hiding the closed down businesses that line the streets. Drunken nights out often end at Guzman y Gomez or Kebab World located just up the road. I even recall one evening where I had to switch buses at Dee Why as a man was threatening people with a bomb, or even the time I was absconded by a man attempting to sell ice. In many ways, this is the capital of the Beaches, the furthest most people travel, and to be fair, there isn’t too much else to see.

The closest stop to the actual beach, the Collaroy stop is nothing special, lacking the usual flair that a B-Line stop carries with it. The most exciting thing to see here is the patch of discoloration on a stone window sill that formed when someone left a Bubblegum Bill there years before. For a good chunk of time, I believed the wooden stick was immovable, but it suddenly disappeared. Now, all that’s left is a permanent pink and brown stain adorning this shop.

Home to Narrabeen Lake and a host of camping grounds, Narrabeen is similar to Dee Why in that many cursed encounters have been had here, mostly by delinquent youths causing a ruckus. One such incident occurred earlier this year, where an older man and a group of kids were threatening each other, getting the bus driver involved and holding up the B1. There is a nice small coffee shop built into the old wooden bus shelter, and on rainy days the covering provides much-needed space to relax. Nearby is the tram shed, a deceptive cafe that from the street looks like a cafe where you sit in a trolley car. In actual fact, the building just owns a tram and it is parked next to a rather boring looking restaurant. One wonders what the point is.

POV: You’re sitting there nice and relaxed and you’ve reached this stop. You decided to get up out of your comfy, air-conditioned seat and get off. You step over the threshold and are greeted by… grass. And a toilet cubicle with graffiti on it. There’s a shopping centre nearby that gives off eerie vibes inside, with no windows and constantly lit by artificial light. The residents had a conflict with Westfield years ago, as they had bought this shopping centre but had wanted to change the name from Warriewood Square to just a generic Westfield. After much fighting, moaning and yelling, the name and exterior of the building stayed the same, with only the inside resembling a Westfield. One can imagine the building like a hollowed-out carcass that has been re-used by this corporate behemoth. Other than that, this area is home to the Warriewood Cinema, owned by the enigmatic Roy Mustaca, a high pitched Opera-singing Italian with fake gelled hair. The stories people have of Roy are in the hundreds, and he’s a mini-celebrity amongst residents of The Beaches.

This is the final stop on your journey, a small village-style area with lots of shops. You could spend a whole day here just going from business to business, exploring their wares. I used to work here, so I would always see the same residents walk around, and you get to know the familiar faces.

The B1 originally planned to go beyond this point, and head towards Newport, with the bus reaching a roundabout where it would make a 360 degree turn head back towards the city. However the plans were scrapped as the council wasn’t willing to extend the road to accommodate the large size of the B-Line. Stickers promoting the Newport stop “coming soon” adorned the inside B1 windows but were taken down after a year. No plans to extend the trip to Avalon or Palm Beach seemed to exist, most likely due to the winding roads that lead to these suburbs pointing to potential disaster considering the height and size of the B1.

And thus ends the B-Line journey, at a slightly unremarkable but friendly stop. Mona Vale is like the retirement home of The Beaches, with old people walking its pavements and op shops littering its street corners. To journey further and enter the more exciting finale of the Beaches like Palm Beach with its lighthouse walk, one must catch the 199: an annoying route that stops at EVERY SINGLE BUS STOP. So strap yourself in for a long ride.

The B-Line has become a staple of the Northern Beaches. Living on Collaroy Plateau, I am privileged enough to get some heightened views of The Beaches from above. The large yellow buses travelling up and down the road provide a nice bit of comfort and add some colour to the area. At the same time, the B1 is always reliable, whether it’s a night out or you’re running late for work. While the stops themselves are interesting, the bus trip to and fro is an attraction in of itself.

The B-Line Frequently Asked Questions, Plus a Handy B-Line Map!

What is The B-Line Bourbon Tour?

It’s been a whirlwind since we launched The B-Line , our new bourbon tour in Northern Kentucky. We’ve shown many journalists, from both the USA and other countries, around The B-Line stops , set up our bright red signature canopy at local events to help spread the word of this new bourbon experience, and even taken a trip on The Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, so we could add a taste of it to The B-Line.

Rows of white tents on Fountain Square in Cincinnati with one red tent that reads "The B-Line" in blue lettering

As you can see from the smiling photos of people who have already completed their Line Guide and received free bourbon swag, the word is out! Folks are "finding their sipping point" on The B-Line-- we’re off to a fun start!

A blonde woman holding a B-Line Line Guide in front of a painting of flowers

Sometimes though, when you’re close to something, you can get too familiar with its details and forget that not everyone knows your story. This was driven home last week when we got a call from someone who’d heard about The B-Line and was very interested, but had a lot of questions. So, in case you’re just hearing about it too, here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions about The B-Line.

What exactly is The B-Line?

The B-Line is a bourbon tour of Northern Kentucky, just across the Ohio river from Cincinnati. It’s comprised of 15 bourbon loving spots: 5 bourbon distilleries, 4 bourbon-centric restaurants, and 6 bourbon bars. You pick up a copy of The B-Line Line Guide and get it stamped at 2 of the distilleries, 2 of the restaurants, and 2 of the bourbon bars and then you redeem it for free bourbon swag here.

A cell phone screen of the digital version of The B-Line bourbon trail's passport

Do you have to pay for your Line Guide?

No, The B-Line Line Guide is free, as is the tour itself—you don’t have to pay a fee to go on The B-Line. You will need to buy something at the bars and restaurants, but it doesn’t have to be bourbon, or even alcoholic. You can get a paper copy of the Line Guide at any of the stops, or at the Cork 'N Bottle at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)  and start getting it stamped to earn your free bourbon swag. You can also use a digital version of the Guide on your phone, Sign up for the free B-Line digital passport here.

Aloft hotel

Do you have to stay in one of The B-Line’s partner hotels?

You can stay anywhere you like, of course although we do highly recommend our award-winning partner hotels, Hotel Covington and Aloft, for a stay in our area for any reason! And, of course, we think they’re the best choice if you’re here to do The B-Line. Both the Aloft and Hotel Covington have impressive bourbon collections and offer spectacular craft cocktails.

Do you need a reservation?

The B-Line is a completely self-chosen tour. You can visit any of the stops on any day and at any time you choose, providing they’re open at that time, of course! Word to the wise, The B-Line restaurants are very popular, so it would be a good idea to make a reservation, especially if you plan to go on a weekend.

How close are The B-Line Stops? And do you provide transportation to them?

As you can see from The B-Line Map below, many of the stops are within a couple of minutes walking distance of each other. For example, Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar, Wiseguy Lounge, Bourbon Haus 1841, and Bouquet Restaurant are all in Mainstrasse Village in Covington, KY, just a few doors away from one another. And you could easily walk over to The Globe in Covington’s downtown business district from them too. A few of our stops are a bit farther away, like Tousey House. And of course, two of them, Old Pogue Distillery and Chandler’s on Market are in Maysville, KY.—a charming riverside town that’s well worth the 45 minute drive. We do not provide transportation, but we do offer a discount for Lyft and Uber to help you stay safe.

We hope this gives you a good idea of how it all works. And we hope to see you on The B-Line one day soon! Cheers, y’all!

How does the B-Line platform work?

The B-Line platform combines a mobile app. web portal, and lean interior positioning system that provide you with: • the ability to grant and revoke access to your facilities. • the tools to manage and optimize operations. • actionable insights for making the most of your space and resources.

Do I have to remove my existing access control system?

No. B-Line integrates with and augments your current access control system. In some cases, obsolete and insecure access readers need to be replaced with Bluetooth-capable devices, but at a fraction of the cost of replacing the underlying security infrastructure.

Getting Started

How does the deployment process work.

The B-Line deployment process is seamless, efficient, and entirely managed by our in-house team. Depending on your operational requirements, B-Line will work with your facility management department or supply its own certified technicians to install any necessary hardware, including sensors and/or Bluetooth access control readers.

How do I activate my digitized access card?

(1) Download the B-Line app from your devices app store. (2) Open the app and input your mobile phone number. (3) A confirmation code will be sent by text to your device. Input the code into the B-Line app.

Which settings need to be enabled on my mobile device?

B-Line uses your device’s Bluetooth and Location Services capabilities to grant you access. Both of these features can be enabled in the settings app on your mobile phone or smart watch.

Data, Privacy, + Security

What information gets collected, and why.

For access control purposes, B-Line collects and stores the names and mobile numbers of authorized individuals.

For the purposes of workplace optimization and space utilization analysis, The B-Line platform collects indoor movement data. To protect the privacy of its users, any and all personally identifiable information is anonymized and not used for analyzing trends and patterns.

Where and how is data collected and stored?

Because the B-Line platform relies on Bluetooth, data is only via sensors positioned within workplaces and common areas.

Is my information kept private?

Location data collected by the B-Line platform is conducted in adherence with national and international privacy laws. For further information, please review the terms of our Privacy Policy.

Doesn't Google already collect this data?

When Google collects location information from a user, it collects this information infrequently and with no concept of schedule or route. It just picks up points periodically when a user launches the Google Maps application to check for directions or calculate a route.

If location services are active on a user’s phone Google knows what dates, locations and some information on a user’s daily travel patterns within a city; however, Google does not know the specifics around a user’s departure time, or how they get from Point A to Point B. This is the type of information necessary for infrastructure planning within cities. In essence, the data Google collects is patchy.

Privacy laws also prevent Google from selling users travel patterns to private individuals and companies for security reasons. Nevertheless, private companies do use Google to advertise to users within a specific geographic area using anonymized location data.

How do I get help?

If you have any questions or concerns about your B-Line experience, please email our Support Desk at [email protected] , and our team will respond as soon as possible.

Is it better to book a cruise through a travel agent? We say yes

G oing online to book an airline ticket or hotel stay is a familiar and fairly easy transaction. When you book a cruise, however — particularly your first cruise — you might want to reconsider the impulse to handle the transaction yourself through a cruise line website or an online advertiser with cheap prices. This DIY approach might not be the best way to find your dream vacation at sea.

In reality, it's not that simple to book a cruise. You will likely run into a lot of questions to which you have no ready answer.

That's where specialized cruise travel agents come into play. Their expertise can help you avoid mistakes, whether you are a first-timer or a repeat cruiser checking out a brand you have not tried before.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Why you should book through a cruise travel agent

You should consider booking a cruise through a travel agent because a knowledgeable agent can help you understand the nuances of a cruise purchase and help you make the best decisions for your vacation preferences.

When you book a cruise, you are making a vacation decision that goes way beyond a flight or hotel nights. Which ship you choose determines your dining and evening entertainment choices for the duration of your vacation. Which itinerary you choose impacts which destinations you'll visit and which shoreside activities will be available to you. It can be overwhelming to evaluate the options on your own if you've never cruised before.

In addition, cruise fares can be hard to understand and compare. You might, for instance, see a fare listed online without the port charges, taxes and fees, which you only see after you give your personal details.

Plus, the price of your cruise includes accommodations, meals, entertainment and activities — and in some cases drinks, tips, shore excursions, Wi-Fi and other extras. There's a lot bundled into some fares and not as much with others. A travel agent can help you determine what your cruise fare gets you. The cheapest base cruise fare does not always provide the best value or best overall vacation deal.

Related: 4 scenarios when you should use a travel agent

You aren't just booking general passage on a ship, either, as you will be asked to pick a specific cabin and when you prefer to dine. Making a mistake in these categories can ruin your cruise experience, as there are such thing as "bad" cabins and dining times (think noisy or claustrophobic cabins, dinner at 8 p.m. with cranky children, etc.).

With cruises, you typically don't pay for your whole vacation upfront but rather put down a deposit, with final payment due at a later date. A cruise travel agent can ensure you don't miss any due dates.

Remember, you might be a DIY type when booking airlines and hotels, but booking a cruise is more complex. If you enjoy doing your own research, focus on what to do and see in the ports of call. Read about different ships, cruise lines and itineraries. However, when it comes to booking the cruise, we recommend you still contact a travel agent who specializes in cruises to help you learn a few tips and avoid any rookie mistakes.

Travel agents can get better deals on cruises

If you're concerned that working with an agent will make your cruise more expensive, don't be. Cruise travel agents receive the bulk of their income via commission from the cruise lines. Their service to you is usually free, though some might charge first-time clients a minimal fee. It's worth it.

In addition to sharing their expertise, the agent may have negotiated group space at lower rates with the cruise line, which could save you money on the cruise fare. The agent might also have first access to sale prices because the cruise lines notify their agent partners and loyalty club members first before they announce a sale to the public.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Some cruise travel agents even throw in booking perks , such as a complimentary bottle of Champagne, awaiting your arrival in your cabin.

How to find a travel agent for a cruise

Cruise lines prefer that you use a travel agent rather than going online and booking directly. They have small in-house reservation teams, and when you have a question while making a booking, good luck in getting an expert on the phone in a timely manner.

Companies such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line provide online directories to help you find an experienced cruise travel agent near you.

You can also find experienced and certified cruise travel agents through CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association , which is the industry's main marketing group. Asking friends who have cruised to recommend a travel agent is another good idea.

Related: 5 unexpected places that sell cruises

You might get more personalized care from smaller agencies than from the huge online agencies, though websites such as icruise.com, Cruise.com and Cruise411.com also have experienced cruise agents. These larger online travel agencies can be a good option for those who prefer to make decisions and ask questions via chat. Just make sure you get the name and phone number of the representative for any follow-up questions.

Questions to ask a cruise travel agent

In choosing a cruise travel agent, you will want to tap into the person's specific expertise about the cruise line and ship you are considering. Anyone can read a ship deck plan outlining ship spaces (which you can find online), but you are looking for people who really know their stuff.

Look for travel agencies that are cruise-only or a home-based agent who specializes in cruises. If you are using a full-service travel agency, ask for the cruise desk.

Here are some questions to ask a travel agent to determine their expertise:

  • How often do you cruise?
  • Have you cruised on the line I am considering?
  • Have you cruised on the ship that I am considering, or do you have clients who have cruised that ship and provided a review of their vacation?
  • Do you have firsthand knowledge about the cruise destination? The itinerary?

You will also want to ask the travel agent if they have a preferred relationship or negotiated agreement with any specific lines that could lead to special perks for you.

Be aware that not all agents work with all cruise lines; some represent only a few preferred suppliers or specialize in higher-end cruises. They get bigger commissions from their preferred lines.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but be aware if the agent seems to be putting you off the line you were originally considering, as this could be the reason. On the plus side, an agent who is a preferred supplier might have negotiated rates with the cruise line and be able to call in favors, such as that bottle of Champagne or a cabin upgrade .

You should also ask if the travel agency offers 24/7 assistance (usually an 800 number) in case you have last-minute questions or something goes wrong before or during your trip.

The cruise travel agent should have questions for you as well, to better understand your dream vacation desires. If you are calling a cruise agency for the first time, the agent should be interviewing you as much as you are interviewing him or her. The agent should be focused on helping you choose the cruise line , ship and cabin that is right for you. Making the correct choices is very important to your overall cruise experience.

Bottom line

Booking a cruise is a complex enterprise. A cruise travel agent will guide you through choosing your cabin and dining times, deposits and final payment, and options for shore excursions and specialty dining. If you need to cancel the trip, the agent will also help you through the refund process. You'll have a lot less stress before and during your vacation if you book with an experienced agent.

MOSCOW, Idaho — Nearly seven weeks after four University of Idaho students were brutally murdered, police arrested a suspect more than 2,500 miles away in eastern Pennsylvania.

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28 , a PhD student at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, was arrested on December 30 and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary for the Nov. 13 stabbing deaths of Ethan Chapin, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21.

Mogen, Kernodle and Goncalves lived with two other students in a six-bedroom home off campus at 1122 King Road near fraternity row. Chapin, who was dating Kernodle, was staying the night.

This is what is known about what happened before and after the killings and the progress of the investigation.

At 8:57 p.m., Goncalves posted a series of cheerful pictures on Instagram with the caption, "One lucky girl to be surrounded by these pple everyday."

That night, Mogen and Goncalves hung out at Corner Club, a downtown bar at 202 N. Main St., while Chapin and Kernodle went to a party together at the Sigma Chi house at 735 Nez Perce Drive on campus,  according to police .

Sunday, Nov. 13 – Two victims spotted at Grub truck

Mogen and Goncalves were captured on a Twitch livestream at 1:41 a.m. at the Grub truck in downtown Moscow, where they ordered carbonara and chatted with people nearby.

A man wearing a hoodie standing near them became the subject of intense online speculation, but police later said he is not a suspect.

A sorority driving service got them home at about 1:56 a.m., according to police and family.

Chapin and Kernodle returned home from Sigma Chi at about 1:45 a.m. The two female roommates who survived the attack returned home from their night out at 1 a.m. and didn’t wake up until late the next morning.

Alivea Goncalves told Inside Edition that her sister, Kaylee, called her ex-boyfriend, Jack DuCoeur, seven times between 2:26 a.m. and 2:44 a.m. Police have cleared him as a suspect.

The murders

The four victims were stabbed to death with a fixed-blade knife between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on the second and third floors of the home, according to police. The murder weapon has not been recovered.

Monday, Nov. 14 – Conflicting accounts

Moscow Mayor Art Bettge told a news outlet that the slayings were a "crime of passion" before backtracking in a statement to Fox News Digital, saying that this was one of several potential motives being probed by investigators.

Tuesday, Nov. 22 – Did Kaylee Goncalves have a stalker?

Police said in a press release that they "pursued hundreds of pieces of information related to this topic and have not been able to identify or verify the identity of a stalker."

Detectives later said they looked into an incident in which a man had followed Goncalves around in a store in mid-October but called it an "isolated incident."

Wednesday, Nov. 30 – People cleared as suspects

Hundreds gathered for a vigil at the University of Idaho, and the families of three of the four victims addressed the community in heart-wrenching statements.

Steve Goncalves, Kaylee's father, revealed for the first time that she and Mogen were  sleeping in the same bed  when they were stabbed to death.

Meanwhile, the lack of a coherent message from public officials sowed further confusion. Latah County prosecutor Bill Thompson said one of the victims was "undoubtedly targeted" in an interview.

Hours later, the Moscow Police Department called Thompson’s comment a miscommunication and said they had not officially deemed the murders a "targeted" crime, appearing to walk back their earlier assertions .

The next day, police clarified that they continue to believe the attack was "targeted."

Uncertainty remains over whether Idaho University slayings were targeted

Police also released a list of people they do not believe are involved in the crime: the two surviving roommates; the man in the Grub truck surveillance footage; the driver who took Mogen and Goncalves home; Goncalves’ ex-boyfriend; any individual at the King Road home when the 911 call was made; and the sixth student on the lease who had moved out months earlier.

Steve Goncalves told Fox News Digital that the family was frustrated over the police’s lack of transparency and the progress of the investigation.

"There seems to be confusion everywhere you look," he said of the probe. "It's just absurd the kind of stuff that’s going on right now."

Goncalves expressed dismay over how quickly police had cleared many people as suspects and dismissed potential connection to other crimes.

"They’ve messed up a million times," he said of investigators.

Kohberger, 28, was studying at the college's department of criminal justice and criminology in Pullman, Washington — about 8 miles from the King Road home where the victims were knifed to death.

The FBI and local police arrested Kohberger at what appears to be his parents' home in a gated community in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, according to a police report.

At a press conference announcing the break in the case, police said they had recovered a Hyundai Elantra but did not confirm whether it belonged to Kohberger.

Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said the court documents outlining the details of the crime would remain sealed until Kohberger is extradited to Idaho.

Police also said that plans to clean the King Road home and release the property back to the owner had been halted by a "legal request from the court."

Tuesday, Jan. 3 – Kohberger waives extradition

Idaho murder suspect Bryan Kohberger waived extradition Tuesday in a Pennsylvania courtroom so he could be brought to Moscow to face murder charges for the deaths of four college students.

Kohberger, 28, entered the Monroe County courtroom in a red jail-issue jumpsuit and looked directly at his parents and sisters who were seated together in the front row of the gallery.

When it comes to government planes and political trips, who pays for a president's campaign travel?

WASHINGTON — It’s no simple matter to move the commander in chief from point A to B, and it’s even more complicated when the president is seeking a second term.

President Joe Biden recently spent three days in Pennsylvania , a pivotal state in the 2024 campaign, and he plans to be in Virginia and Florida this coming week. The Democratic incumbent is seeking an edge over Republican Donald Trump as he ramps up his travels around the country.

Here’s a look at how much it costs and who pays the bill during the campaign season.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

It’s not cheap to fly the president’s fleet.

The White House uses Sikorsky helicopters known as Marine One when the president is aboard, as well as custom Boeing 747s that are immediately recognizable as the iconic humpback Air Force One. (Sometimes the president uses a more modest modified 757 if his destination is nearby or if a runway isn’t long enough to accommodate the bigger plane.)

Marine One costs between $16,700 and almost $20,000 per hour to operate, according to Pentagon data for the 2022 budget year. Air Force One is even more expensive: roughly $200,000 per hour.

But those figures only scratch the surface of the real cost. There also are military cargo planes that travel ahead of the president to make sure his armored limousines are in place, not to mention the enormous security apparatus that follows the president everywhere.

New aircraft are in the works because the current versions are decades old. Sikorsky is producing 23 updated helicopters to serve as Marine One. Boeing is building two new Air Force One planes , and they are scheduled to be finished by 2028. According to the Pentagon, the planes will come with all enhancements, including “a mission communication system,” a “self-defense system” and even “autonomous baggage loading.”

WHO PAYS FOR THE TRAVEL?

When the president flies for political purposes, the campaign is supposed to pay the bill. But during an election year, the line between governing and campaigning can be fuzzy.

For example, Biden held an official event Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where he announced his proposal for higher tariffs on steel imported from China. The event, however, was a not-so-subtle opportunity for the president to rub shoulders with union members who are critical to his reelection, and he jabbed at Trump in his remarks. (At one point Biden joked that the former president was “busy right now,” a reference to the hush money trial that recently got underway in New York.)

It’s up to the White House counsel’s office to figure out what percentage of the president’s travels are campaign related. That determines how much the federal government should be reimbursed by the Biden campaign. Sometimes the calculations aren’t straightforward, such as when the White House adds an official event to an otherwise political trip.

Norm Eisen, a White House ethics lawyer under President Barack Obama, said both Republicans and Democrats have usually hewed closely to regulations.

“We had a set of rules on how to do the allocations,” he said. “They’re intricate, and we stuck to them.”

No matter what, taxpayers end up on the hook for most of the cost. Campaigns do not pay for all the Secret Service agents and the rest of the security apparatus. In fact, they usually only cover the cost of Air Force One passengers who are flying for explicitly political purposes — sort of like buying a ticket on a particularly exclusive private jet.

HOW MUCH HAS BIDEN PAID?

Biden’s campaign and his joint fundraising committee have been stockpiling travel cash in an escrow account maintained by the Democratic National Committee. From January 2023 until the end of last month, they deposited nearly $6.5 million.

Some of that money goes to general campaign logistics, such as staff expenses and advance work. The account is also used to reimburse the federal government for official aircraft used to transport the president, the first lady, the vice president and the second gentleman when they travel for the reelection effort.

So far, not much money has found its way back to the U.S. Treasury. As of the latest data available, just $300,000 has been provided.

It’s safe to assume that Biden’s campaign will end up forking over much more than that once the campaign is over. Trump’s team reimbursed the federal government nearly $4.7 million for travel expenses during the 2020 race.

But Biden probably won’t have trouble covering his bills. His campaign and the DNC had more than $192 million in cash on hand at the end of March.
