This blog is about the top things to do in Bacolod and other tourist spots in Negros Occidental. 

Most visits to Negros Occidental begin with Bacolod City, the capital of the province, once the haven of the sugar industry in the Philippines.  Now, Bacolod is best known for Masskara Festival, one of the biggest festivals in the country .  It is also a food haven, don’t miss trying local Negros food such as chicken inasal, cansi, and piaya.

While there’s not much attraction in Bacolod, the city is a good base and entry point for exploring the top tourist attractions in Negros Occidental such as Mt.Kanlaon Natural Park, The Ruins, Silay, Campuestuhan Highlands, Lakawon Island, Carbin Reef, and Sipalay . Visitors can even cross to Iloilo City by sea.

1.experience masskara festival, why is it one of the top things to do in bacolod.

Masskara Festival, the festival of smiles, is one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines, held every October in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. The term “Masskara” was coined from the words “mass” (crowd) and “kara” (face), which literally means “Festival of Many Faces”. During the celebration, Bacolod exude an enchanted atmosphere as masked dancers fill the streets, dancing to the tunes of live music, and many events are organized in the city.

Interestingly, Masskara Festival was founded sometime in 1980 and was first held back in October 19, 1980  to help ease the misery of the locals. A tragedy struck in the evening of April 22, 1980 when M/S Don Juan, a ferry carrying about 1,000 passengers, most of them are Negrense, collided with M/T Tacloban City tanker en route to Bacolod from Manila.  The ferry instantly sunk off shore Mindoro, killing about 750 passengers.

2. FEAST ON CHICKEN INASAL

Why is it one of the best things to do in bacolod.

Mention Bacolod food and chicken inasal (grilled chicken) will come to mind. Chicken inasal is Bacolod’s most famous local delicacy known for its smoky taste and yellowish look.  There are several eateries and restaurants in Bacolod serving chicken inasal , but the best place to go is Manokan Country .  It is said that back in the 80’s, the inasal food stalls where just scattered on the sidewalks, until the local government brought them organized them to create what is known as Manokan Country. You can choose from several restaurants serving chicken inasal here.

3. RELAX AT THE CAPITOL BUILDING AND LAGOON

Why is it one of the top bacolod tourist spots.

Built in 1927 and completed 6 years after, the Capitol Building in Bacolod, which is the official seat of the governor of the province, exhibits the Beaux-Arts architectural design that is inspired by French Neocolonialism.  Based on anecdotes ,the city planner Daniel Burnham, one of the celebrated American architects who studied in Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris visited the Philippines upon the invitation of the then Governor General William Cameron Forbes to visit the Philippines.  He recommended William Parsons as consulting architect, who structured the architectural office of the Bureau of Public Works, composed of American and Filipino architects including  Juan Nakpil, Tomas Bautista Mapua, and Juan de Guzman Arellano who implemented the plan.  The Capitol Building was declared as National Historical Landmark in 1994.

The Capitol Building is shaped like the letter E, and the neck-swivelling façade is fringed by towering, massive colonnades. The sculptures at the Capitol Building are believed to be designed by the works of Guillermo Tolentino, the National Artist for Sculpture.

Near the man-made lagoon at the Capitol Grounds, you’ll notice striking statues painted in gold. The carabao (water buffalo) and a woman is attributed to Italian sculpture Frances Riccardo Monti, while the man riding a female carabao was made by Negrense artist Felix Garzon.

There’s also a memorial for the war veterans at the heart of the Capitol Ground.

4. VISIT SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH

Why is a famous bacolod tourist spot.

The San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod city was originally constructed in 1825 and was renovated towards the end of the century. The 2 bell towers (the original wooden church has 1 bell tower only) were built in 1885 and eventually the bells were relocated to the churchyard for the preservation.  In 1933, San Sebastian Church was declared a cathedral when Bacolod was converted into a diocese.

5.TRY CANSI

Why is it one of the best Bacolod food?

Another must-try Negrense dish that you can find in Bacolod is the cansi (kansi), a traditional comfort food made of boiled bone-in beef shank with beef chunks and bone marrow and made sour by batuan fruit. The best place to eat cansi in Bacolod is at Sharyn’s Cansi House that is included in the World’s Top 50 Street Food Masters  chosen by panel of industry experts during the World Street Food Congress (WSFC).  The last time I ate here, the cansi served to me is good for 2-3 persons, about ₱290 ($6)  if I remember it correctly.

6. EXPERIENCE PIAYA MAKING

Piaya is a famous Negros delicacy that is made of flat unleavened bread filled with muscovado and glucose syrup.  It is believed that piaya was created to promote the sugar industry of Negros.

Bong bongs is one of the oldest bakers of piaya.  Most tourists who want to take home Bacolod and Negros local delicacies head to Bong Bongs.  But did you know that they also offer a workshop on how to make a piaya?  You can book in advance through their Facebook page to secure a slot, and it only costs  ₱60 per person (minimum 15 pax, maximum 50 pax).  The Bong Bongs piaya workshop is available from Mondays to Saturdays (closed on Sundays).

7. VISIT THE NEGROS MUSEUM

Why is it one of the famous bacolod tourist spots.

Originally built as a Provincial Agricultural Building, it now houses the Negros Museum that was founded in 1996. The Negros Museum is like a gate to the world of Negros, which aims to promote understanding of the history, culture, artistry, and life in Negros island.  Also, on display here are several artworks of local artists that are for sale.  Negros Museum also houses a Toy Gallery with toy collections from around the world including dolls of different sizes.

The Negros Showroom has 2 branches: the original shop is located along Lacson Street while the other one is at Central City Walk in Robinson’s Place, Bacolod.

9. HAVE A SLICE OF CAKE AT CALEA

Why is it one of the top bacolod food.

Whenever I am in Bacolod, I always make it a point to drop by at Calea, a haven for cakes and pastries.  Calea is the most popular dessert café in Bacolod and it’s not surprising since they serve really delicious cakes. If you can’t decide what to eat, try their best-seller – the chocolate mud pie.  Calea also has a pretty nice ambience, perfect for sipping a cup of coffee while enjoying a bite of your favorite pastry.

1.Take a jeepney bound for Mandalafan-Libertad or Bata-Libertad from Central Market. Fare is ₱8 ($0.16).

10. CHECK OUT THE JOHN PAUL TOWER II

Why is it one of the top bacolod things to do.

Back in area in February 20, 1981, Pope John Paul II visited Bacolod City and celebrated a mass near BREDCO (Bacolod Real Estate Development Corporation), a reclamation area in the city. The John Paul II Tower is a pilgrimage center, erected near the aforementioned site to commemorate that important event. The soaring building dedicated to the late Pope John Paull II is composed of 8 floors and offers a great view of Bacolod City and Guimaras Strait. Displayed here are pictures, relics, and vestment he used during his visit.

11. DINE AT PALA-PALA MARKET

One of the best places to eat in Bacolod is the pala-pala style restaurant.  It’s their version of dampa, like the one in Manila, where customers can buy fresh seafood straight from the Pala- Pala Market and they can go to the nearest “tulahan” and they can cook the seafood for you. The price for the paluto depends on the cooking style and ingredients used.   Here’s the usual paluto:

•   Crabs – chili or steamed
• Shrimps –  buttered garlic, steamed, or chili (spicy-garlic)
• Squid – adobo, calamares
• Scallops – buttered garlic, grilled
• Fish – grilled, sizzling, soup

12. THE RUINS

Why is it one of the top places to see near bacolod.

Mention Bacolod and The Ruins will immediately come to mind.  But this famous attraction is actually located in Talisay, not Bacolod.

Based on anecdotes, The Ruins was built as a reminder of great love. Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a sugar baron from Talisay, Negros Occidental fell in love with Maria Braga, a Portuguese from Macau.  They eventually got married, settled in Negros, and had 10 children. When Maria got pregnant with her 11 th child, she slipped in their bathroom and bled heavily. She couldn’t stand to go to the physician, so his husband had to request for a physician who lives in Silay.  It took 4 days for the physician to arrive by horse-drawn carriage and sadly, Maria and the child already passed away. Mariano was broken-hearted, he then decided to build an Italian-inspired mansion dedicated to his wife.  Unfortunately, during the World War II, the guerillas burned down the beautiful mansion to prevent the Japanese soldiers from using it as a military headquarters.   The frame of the mansion survived,  hence the name, like a testament of one great love that stood the test of time.

How to get to The Ruins:

1.Take the jeepney to Bata-Libertad (northbound, going to Bata). Fare is ₱8 ($0.16) per person.  You can find this jeepney along Lacson Street in Bacolod city.

2.Get off at Pepsi Plant (near Ceres North Terminal).

3.Take a tricycle to The Ruins. Fare is ₱50 ($1)  per person.

4.At the gate of The Ruins, pay the entrance fee.

Alternatively, you can also take a taxi to The Ruins from downtown Bacolod.

Going back to Bacolod from The Ruins:

Best to take the shuttle van that leaves every 30 mins – 1 hour. Fare is ₱50 ($1) person to Robinsons Bacolod and ₱70 ($1.38)  to Ayala Malls Capitol Central.

1.Take the tricycle back to Pepsi Plant. Fare is ₱50 ($1) per person.

2.Cross the high-way and tale the jeepney en route to Libertad. Fare is ₱8 ($0.16) per person.

13.CAMPUESTUHAN HIGHLANDS

Why is it one of the best places to visit near bacolod.

One of the popular resorts near Bacolod is Campuestuhan Highland Resort, situated in Talisay, Negros Occidental. This sprawling family-friendly resort was originally planned as a retirement home of Ricardo and Nina Tan, but upon seeing the majestic view surrounding it, they changed the plan to what is now known as Campuestuhan Highland Resort.  Aside from the swimming, the resort also offers various activities like zipline, hamster wheel, sky bicycle, rope course, and even horseback riding.  Kids will also enjoy Campuestuhan Highland Resort because of the life-size statues of superheroes here such as Batman, Icredible Hulk, Thor, and Superman.

14.mambukal resort, why is it one of the top things to see in bacolod.

To get a true taste of nature, head to Mambukal Resort, about an hour away by local bus from Bacolod City. Mambukal Resort is a timeless nature resort  covering roughly 23.6 hectares of land at the foot of the mighty Mt.Kanlaon in Murcia, Negros Occidental.  It is the gateway to Mt.Kanlaon via the Wasay Trail.

Interestingly, Mambukal Resort was originally conceptualized by Kokichi Paul Ishawata, a Japanese architect, in 1927. This is why this place houses a Japanese-inspired bath house and a picnic garden.

Mambukal Resort is sprinkled with nature springs, jungle-clad mountains, and waterfalls.  The resort may seem old and forgotten, but once you take a leisurely walk around its surroundings, you’ll most likely appreciate the forest surrounding it.

If you are adventurous enough, you can hike the 7 waterfalls inside the confines of Mambukal Resort.  But if you have limited time like us, you can rent a motorbike (with driver) to the jumping off point if the 1st and 2 nd waterfall. If I remember it correctly I think I paid  ₱50 one way.  Then at the start of the trail, you can hire a guide for your security and to avoid getting lost.   It’s an easy hike to reach the 1 st waterfall from the jumping off point, you can also do the 2 nd waterfall in Mambukal Resort.

How to get to Mambukal Resort:

1.From Bacolod City, ride a jeepney en route to Bata or Mandalagan or take a cab to Libertad Public Market.

2.Alight at Libertad Market.

3.Walk to Save More Libertad. In front of it is the Libertad Terminal.

4.Ride the double tier bus to Mambukal Resort. Fare is about ₱40 ($0.79) one-way and travel time is approximately 45 minutes.

Why is it one of the top things to do near Bacolod?

Silay City in Negros Occidental has a timeless appeal, once dubbed as the “Paris of Negros”, it takes pride as one of the largest sugar producers in the Philippines.  But what draws tourists here are the more or less 30 well-preserved age-old houses built during the Spanish colonial period declared as official heritage landmarks by the National Historical Commission.

16.lakawon island, why is it one of the top beaches near bacolod.

Lakawon Island is a pretty popular island and beach destination near Bacolod perfect for group and even solo travelers. It can be done as a day trip from Bacolod city, but to better enjoy its facilities and soak up the beach vibe here, best to stay overnight. 17.CARBIN REEF

Why is it one of the best beaches near bacolod.

Another rising beach destination accessible from Bacolod City is Carbin Reef.  It’s actually a napkin-shaped sandbar lapped by crystal clear denim blue water.   It has a powdery white sand peppered with makes-shift cottages. But its real gem is hidden underwater – a 200 hectare marine sanctuary, part of Sagay’s protected seascape.

18.ILAYA HIGHLAND RESORT

The newest attraction near Bacolod City is Ilaya Highland Resort, a Balinese-inspired resort perfect for family and friend bonding in Patag, Negros Occidental.  Visitors can do a day trip here and swim in its infinity pool while enjoying in the scenic view of the mountains and Panay Island.

19.CHURCH OF THE ANGRY CHRIST

Situated in Victorias City in Negros Occidental, the St. Joseph the Worker Chapel (Church of the Angry Christ) features unique artistry and imagery of Jesus and the saints. Constructed 5 years after the World War II, it is hailed an Important Cultural Property of the Philippines. The structural design of this distinctive church  was created by Czech architect Antonin Raymond, who made sure that the building can withstand earthquakes.

The Church of the Angry Christ is owned by the wealthy sugar baron family – Osssorio Family, that is why it is sitting inside the confines of a sugar milling complex.  What makes this church unique is the depiction of Jesus Christ, instead of showing a compassionate image, he is shown here as angry. The rare mural was created by a Filipino born-artist Alfonso Ossorio, known for his surrealist works.

Meanwhile, the beautiful mosaics inside the church are made by Belgian Adelaide de Bethune. The brass plates in the pulpit and the baptistry designed by Bethune was made by Arcadio Anore.  The Filipino-looking wooden sculptures of saints, Mary and Joseph, and the images of the Stations of the Cross were created by Benjamin Valenciano. Interestingly, the brown skin of the Filipinized version of the religious themes were made of glass from beer bottles.

How to get to the Angry Christ Church:

1.From Bacolod City, ride a bus to Manapla.

2.Alight at Victorias Milling Company in Victorias City.

3.Take a tricycle to the Saint Joseph Church inside the Victorias Milling Company.

P.S. Apologies, my old hard drive  where the photos of the church is stored is defective so I can’t show you how it looks. But the church is worth checking.

Sipalay was once a local secret, but it’s slowly getting the attention that it deserves.  Getting here may be more than the adventure you bargained for, but it’s well worth it. Ah, the “City of Smiles”. If you’re looking for the best place to spend your vacation here in the Philippines , one of your best choices has got to be Bacolod City. 1. The Ruins

Number one on the list and probably the most controversial cultural landmark in Bacolod is The Ruins. It’s kinda like the iconic Taj Mahal of India but with a far more tragic ending. The Ruins Mansion was originally built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, an extremely rich Filipino Bachelor in the 1900s who wanted to express his love to Maria Braga. Also known as the Nutsberry Garden, the mansion was then eventually destroyed because Filipino guerillas were against Don Mariano’s decision to harbor some Japanese soldiers during the heights of World War II.

Ultimately, the spectacular mansion was destroyed and burned to the ground. But what’s really amazing is that the pillars and arches of the mansion remained standing, making it a beautiful ancient landmark as of this day.

Indeed, The Ruins is one of the most popular tourist spots in Bacolod because it’s an aesthetic location to take some pictures, have a nice dinner, and just admire the rich history of its past. 2. Negros Museum

Of course, your trip to Bacolod wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Negros Museum. It’s the perfect way to know more about the City of Smiles’ rich culture and history. Located at the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol Complex, this unique museum doesn’t house any archaeological artifacts. Why? Because it wants to highlight the delightful Negrense lifestyle and society.

3. Negros Capitol Park and Lagoon

The Negros Capital Park and Lagoon is also a nice place to explore the city of Bacolod where I’m sure you’ll meet a bunch of wonderful people, spot some hidden cultural gems, and ultimately know the city better. The huge park covers an area of about 3 hectares and is ideally located at the heart of the city.

While walking around, you’ll be able to spot two incredible sculptures highlighting the diverse culture of Bacolod City, these are the Paghimud-os Monument and the carabao masterpieces by Italian sculptor Francesco Riccardo Monti. 4. San Sebastian Church

Another must-visit landmark in Bacolod City is no other than the San Sebastian Church also known as the Catedral de San Sebastián de Bacolod, one of the most famous religious institutions in the country. This three-arched 19th-century Baroque-style cathedral attracts a lot of tourists, especially Catholic pilgrims, from different parts of the world.

The facade and the architecture of the church itself are already a gem you must see. So whether you’re visiting to offer prayers or just to catch a glimpse of Bacolod’s center of religion, adding the beautiful San Sebastian Church to the list is definitely the right thing to do.

5. Pope John Paul II Tower

One of the highlights of Bacolod City’s colorful history is when the late Pope John Paul II visited the city on February 20, 1981. Being one of the most dedicated Catholic provinces, the Pope’s visit was definitely appreciated by the Negrense people. Numerous festivities, events, and programs were held to commemorate Pope John Paul II and one prime example is the construction of Pope John Paul II Tower. This 7-story building which serves as a pilgrimage center became one of Bacolod’s significant landmarks because of its history and the statue of Pope John Paul II erected at the building’s entrance.

6. Panaad Park and Stadium, Bacolod City

Another one of Bacolod’s pride and most popular tourist spots is Panaad Park and Stadium. This 25-hectare park serves as the home of some of the Philippines’ prestigious sporting events like the ASEAN Games, Palarong Pambansa, Philippine Football League Games, and many more.

Built in the year 1997, the stadium consists of a rubberized oval where athletes and even locals can take their exercise and work out. The park is also surrounded by about 60,000 Eucalyptus trees. Yup! 60,000. There’s really no better place to work out and jog in the morning in Bacolod other than Panaad Park and Stadium! Oh, and aside from the huge field, there are also Olympic-sized swimming pools inside the park where you can go for a quick swim. Just don’t forget to ask permission, alright?

7. Experience the Masskara Festival

Well, aside from unraveling Bacolod City’s most beautiful landmarks, another great thing to do in the City of Smiles is to experience the iconic Masskara Festival. This annual festival held every 4th of October represents the resilience and creativity of the Negrense people.

The Masskara Festival was created to uplift the spirits of the people after a devastating tragedy hit the province in the 1980s. Colorful masks, costumes, and exciting activities all await the guests attending the Masskara Festival! It’s also the perfect time to immerse yourself in the wonderful culture of Bacolod and try out all their delicious delicacies and treats. This is also the best time to buy different souvenirs and pasalubongs because there will surely be lots and lots of bazaars set up around the city.

8. CALEA Pastries

And just like what I keep on saying, definitely, one of the best things to do in Bacolod City is going on a gastronomic adventure. Well, that’s exactly what we’ll be doing right now! Our next destination is the famous CALEA Pastries & Coffee. A lot of people who’ve been to Bacolod City are saying that your trip to the City of Smile wouldn’t be complete if you haven’t tried CALEA’s best-selling pastries and coffee.

Located along Lacson Street, CALEA offers a wide variety of cakes such as Chocolate Cakes, Cheesecakes, Frozen Cakes, and also Hot and Iced Coffees. One of the best-sellers and something I would personally recommend is their Chocolate Mud Pie. It’s amazingly delicious so be sure not to miss out!

9. Sharyn’s Cansi House

Another popular food trip experience a lot of people are crazy about is dining at Sharyn’s Cansi House. As we all know, Cansi or Kansi is one of Bacolod City’s iconic delicacies. Kansi is a Filipino sour soup dish made of Beef shanks usually paired with jackfruit, kamias, tomato, garlic, and other seasonings.

The beef is boiled until it reaches a gelatinous consistency which is what locals love. Basically, Kansi is the delicious combination of both Bulalo and Sinigang so trust me, you’ll never regret tasting this heavenly creation! And the best place to eat Kansi not only in Bacolod but in the entire country is definitely Sharyn’s Cansi House. Since 1986, this has been the go-to Kansi eatery in Bacolod City so make sure to drop by!

10. Mambukal Mountain Resort

Well, as I’ve mentioned earlier, Bacolod City isn’t only about historical, cultural, and religious landmarks. The city is also known for its amazing natural wonders! One best example is the Mambukal Mountain Resort. If you want to experience the beauty of nature at its finest, booking your vacation here at Mambukal is probably the best way to do it.

Situated at 1,200 feet above sea level and covering an area of about 23.6 hectares at the foothills of Mt. Kanlaon, the mountain resort offers bunches of fun and exciting activities to get you closer to nature. From natural hot sulfur springs to boating lagoons, swimming pools, and many more, I’m sure that guests will really have a wonderful time just chilling out, relaxing, and admiring the beauty of nature.

Oh, and during your stay, be sure to try out all of the exciting activities waiting for you! Swimming, bat-watching, visiting the butterfly garden, kayaking, or even relaxing at the Ishiwata Bath House will definitely be one of the highlights of your trip.

Now that we’re done exploring the beautiful city of Bacolod, let us now discover some hidden gems near the city! The first one we’ll visit is the one and only Lakawon Island. This 16-hectare banana-shaped island is easily one of the most popular island destinations in Western Visayas .

From its white-sand beaches, shady coconut trees, and glamorous cottages and resort facilities, I’m sure that you’ll have the best summer of your life here. Lakawon is indeed a world-class resort and spa that you should add to your list of must-visit destinations in Negros Occidental . Why? Well, it’s already an all-in package allowing tourists to sit back, relax, and enjoy the tropical paradise life!

12. Balay Negrense

Balay Negrense, on the other hand, is another prized gem by the Negros Occidental province. This ancestral house and museum are owned by Victor Fernandez Gaston, son of one of the pioneer sugar barons in Negros. Balay Negrense attracts a lot of tourists simply because of its old-world beauty and architecture.

The house showcases what it’s like to live as a member of a powerful family of sugar barons in the late 19th century. Personal artifacts, collections, and perfectly-preserved antique furniture are housed inside the ancestral house. I’m sure that history buffs and scholars will have a great time here!

13. Pulang Tubig Falls

I know, I know. I was intrigued by the name too when I first read it! The iconic Pulang Tubig Falls of Mt. Patag in Silay City, Negros Occidental has been attracting tourists from different parts of the country for many years already. To answer your questions, here are a few origin stories about the controversial name of the waterfalls. Are you ready? Here it goes! One story suggests that the name “Pulang Tubig” or Red Water is said to have come from the blood of Japanese soldiers killed during World War II. Another possible reason is that the red water is said to have been caused by the sulfuric reaction of the river stones along the water bed. Well, no matter what the true story about Pulang Tubig Falls really is, only one thing’s for sure. Its beauty is truly enchanting.

Towering at a height of about 80 meters, Pulang Tubig Falls easily becomes a gigantic and amazing sight for visitors. The best part? You can take a swim and dive any time of the day because the crystal clear waters are always cold! Oh, and also make sure to be wary of your surroundings because this might be your chance to meet some of the Philippines’ endangered animal species up close like the Visayan Warty Pig, Philippine Spotted Deer, and the Bleeding Heart Pigeon.

14. Bernardino Jalandoni Museum

Another one of Negros Occidental’s highly esteemed cultural landmarks is the Bernardino Jalandoni Museum also known as the Pink House because of the captivating pink paint of its facade. This huge ancestral house in Silay City became recognized as a “Natural Historical Landmark” by the National Historical Institute.

The house was built in 1908 when Don Bernardino and his beautiful wife, Doña Isabela Lopez came to Negros Occidental to start their family. Up to this date, lots and lots of tourists visit the Bernardino Jalandoni Museum to know more about the province’s colorful history through its antique furniture, artifacts, and collections.

15. Ramon Hofileña Heritage House

And last but definitely not the least in our Bacolod City adventure is the incredible Ramon Hofileña Heritage House which is again situated in Silay City. Ramon Hofileña is known as the Father of Heritage Conservation which is why it isn’t surprising that you’ll get to witness up close some of the finest and rarest Filipino art collections of the 19th century.

The works of legendary Filipino artists like Juan Luna, Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, Vicente Manansala, and many more are perfectly preserved in this mansion. Moreover, the antique furniture and house equipment in the house are also quite a sight to see! And of course, the architecture of the heritage house itself is also something that will make you feel like you’re traveling back in time.

Lakawon island is part of Cadiz City, not Bacolod. It is within Brgy. Cadiz Viejo’s jurisdiction. As a Cadiznon, it’s sad how our city isn’t even mentioned. The island is most definitely not an hour ride away from Bacolod by boat. Bacolod is 2 hours away from Cadiz by bus. Tourists are dropped off at the Martesan station and tricycles are available for them to take to reach the port. Tricycles driven by Cadiznons. The island is maintained by Cadiznons and needs the Cadiz City mayor’s permit to operate.

Before Lakawon island was made into a resort, it was home to Cadiznons. The typhoon Yolanda ravaged the island and forced residents to evacuate. It was no longer safe for them to continue living there. The city government of Cadiz provided a safer location for them to move into. Most of them were fishermen. After clearing the island, a private individual proposed to rent the island and turned it into what it is now.

3. Old Pala-Pala Market

The Lagoon is named after a large fishpond located in the center of the park. The park is a popular exercise spot and serves as “Kilometer Zero” for the province. Feeding the fish in the massive pond is also a popular diversion among the locals.

6. Art District

For a relatively small city, Bacolod has an art scene that is much bigger and more influential than those of many other Philippine cities. Though there are art galleries and studios located all over Bacolod, the Art District in Barangay Mandalagan has a high concentration of them. If you’re interested in what the province’s up-and-coming artists have to offer, this is the place to be.

7. San Sebastian Cathedral

Also known as the Bacolod Cathedral, this 19th-century coral stone structure is built in a baroque style. The building has come to be a symbol of Bacolod, and was a site of historical events related to the Negros Revolution and the Second World War, to name a few. As Bacolod was a major Spanish colonial settlement, it also overlooks the next site on this list.

8. Bacolod City Plaza

Officially known as the Plaza del 6 de Noviembre to commemorate the capitulation of the Spanish forces to the Negrense revolutionaries in 1898, the plaza is a popular hangout spot for locals and is a venue for cultural, political, and recreational activities.

It contains a popular bandstand with the names of Beethoven, Wagner, Haydn, and Mozart inscribed on the roof’s sides as well as a World War II memorial and other diversions.

Also known as Bacolod’s Chinatown, this district has a sleepier and more laid-back vibe than the much older Binondo district in Manila. However, the food options here are going to compete with the very best Binondo has to offer. 

Make sure to hit up Sharyn’s and Eron’s for some cansi, a local favorite that’s sort of a cross between  sinigang  and  bulalo . If you’re in the mood for something else, you can pick up locally-sourced coffee at Kuppa, fried chicken at Luisa’s, or the famous jumbo siopao at City Lunch.

While Bacolod itself has a large number of heritage houses, Silay City’s collection is especially notable due to their state of preservation and proximity to each other. Their closeness and excellent preservation make it easy to visualize what life was like for the well-heeled from the mid-19th century up through the middle of the 20th century. 

While many of these houses are still inhabited and closed to the public, the Bernardino Jalandoni, Gaston, and Hofilena residences have been converted to museums and can be visited either by appointment or during specified visiting hours.

Bacolod’s main airport, the Bacolod–Silay International Airport is located relatively close by, so make sure to check out these historic houses before leaving Negros.

11. Mambukal Resort

This affordable highland hot spring resort is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s located in the adjoining municipality of Murcia, less than an hour away from Bacolod by car under ideal traffic conditions. Mambukal is located within a forested area and features several hot springs, hiking trails, a series of waterfalls, and many other diversions.

Simply called “The Ruins” by locals, the Instagram-friendly ruins of the Don Mariano Lacson mansion are located within the adjoining city of Talisay, right next to Bacolod. The site is a favorite spot for photographers and is especially remarkable at sunset. A restaurant at the location is a popular spot for romantic get-togethers.

13. Negros Forests & Ecological Foundation Biodiversity Conservation Center

Located right in the middle of Bacolod, this low-key facility is not a zoo but a wildlife rescue and conservation center. Here you can see the world’s rarest pig, the Negros subspecies of the Visayan warty pig ( Sus cebifrons negrinus )   as well as the world’s rarest deer, the Visayan spotted deer ( Rusa alfredi ). The conservation center is also home to several species of endemic birds as well as a few Visayan leopard cats ( Prionailurus javanensis sumatranus ).

These are just some of the places in and around the city that you could easily visit if you booked a single overnight stay in one of the hotels in Bacolod. If you want to visit other spots in Negros, you may want to book a few more nights to ensure that you could really take things in. 

Bacolod isn’t the only place in Negros that offers a wide selection of quality attractions. Other parts of the island offer world-class beaches, hiking trails, cuisine, and other great diversions. If those are what you’re after, you may want to book hotels or resorts closer to those locations, as they can be a long drive away from Bacolod.

Dry season in Bacolod is from the months of December to May. October is a busy month in Bacolod City because this is when the famous MassKara Festival is celebrated annually.

International and local visitors flock to the city during this time of the year, so it’s a great time to book a tour to join the festivities. The name is a combination of two words, “mass” meaning “many people” and “kara” which is the Spanish word for face.

The Bacolod International airport is located in Silay City and 15km away from Bacolod city, about 20-30 minutes away by car. Local flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) and local budget airline Cebu Pacific Air (CEB) offers daily  fights to Bacolod coming from most major cities within the Philippines. The Provincial Capitol and Lagoon, which is the seat of the Negros Occidental provincial government, is housed within a building that features a Romanesque neo-classical design. This harkens to the glorious past of the province as the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines, where its residents enjoyed considerable wealth and prosperity brought about by the booming sugar business at the time.

Many of Bacolod’s residents are deeply religious Catholics who proudly practice their faith. In honor of the former Pope John Paul II visit to Bacolod City, Pope John Paul II Tower commemorates the place where he first held mass on February 20, 1981.

Look for the sculpture of the Pope by the entrance of the tower - it is a remarkable 8-foot-tall sculpture made of fiberglass and bronze. Learn about the origins and history of the province by visit Negros Museum. The building was formerly used as the provincial agricultural building in 1925.

This mansion was built by sugar magnate Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson in memory of his Portuguese wife Maria Braga and used to be the biggest residential structure at the time. It features neo-Romanesque columns and Italianate architectural design.

What to Eat in Bacolod

Any Bacolod trip isn’t complete without a gastronomic tour of the best food of Bacolod. Make sure you feast on Bacolod’s famous tasty chicken inasal (or just inasal ), their local version of roasted chicken marinated in calamansi (local lime), annato , vinegar, and pepper.

Manokan Country is where you can go for a no-nonsense, open-air experience of eating inasal , which has rows of stalls selling the native delicacy.

17 Tourist Spots in Bacolod City and Beyond to Visit in 2024

Do you know where the City of Smiles in the Philippines is located? Are you wondering if the tourist spots in Bacolod are worth visiting? Well, you’re in for a treat! 

Bacolod City is a city of contrasts, where the old and new coexist harmoniously .

The city is home to several historical landmarks, and museums housed in restored ancestral homes that showcase traditional Negros Occidental culture. 

I had only been there once for a limited time before but I went back in October 2023 to explore Bacolod tourist spots.

That included booking a tri-city tour with a local tour guide, eating local delicacies and going to popular unique places.  

But above all, I went to experience the famous MassKara festival, one of the biggest festivals in the Visayas!

If you’re planning a trip in 2024 to Bacolod, we’ve rounded up 17 must-visit tourist spots in Bacolod City and beyond , so you can make the most of your visit. 

17 Things to Do and Must-See Tourist Spots in Bacolod  

1. marvel at the ruins, a fascinating historic site.

🕰️ Opening Hours: 9 AM – 8 PM 🎟️ Adults: ₱150 | Senior Citizens and PWD: ₱100 | Students: ₱80 | Children < 8yrs old: FREE

The Ruins is a popular tourist spot outside Bacolod City. Specifically located in Talisay City .

This mansion was built in the early 1900s by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson , a wealthy sugar planter, and was designed by an Italian architect. 

During World War II, the mansion was occupied by the Japanese army and when the Japanese retreated in 1945, they set the mansion on fire to prevent its use by advancing American forces.

Only the concrete walls and columns remained. 

The Ruins was opened to the public in 2008 and it has since become one of the most popular tourist spots beyond Bacolod City.

There are good spots to take pictures around the area without capturing other tourists but if you want the place less crowded, I advise you to go here early in the morning or at noon .

My local tour guide told me that there’s less crowd at noontime and it ended up being true, which is surprising!

The Ruins are famous for their romantic and tragic history, as well as their stunning architecture and gardens.

The mansion was built to symbolise Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson’s love for his wife .

However, during World War II, the mansion was deliberately set on fire by retreating Japanese forces to prevent its use by advancing American forces.

Despite the tragic destruction, the ruins that remain tell a story of love, resilience, and historical significance. 

The Ruins in Bacolod is called so because it is the remains of what was once a grand and opulent mansion .

This mansion was originally known as the “Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson Mansion” and was the home of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a wealthy sugar baron, and his family. 

As of 2023, the entrance fee at The Ruins is ₱150 for adults, ₱120 for senior citizens and PWD, ₱100 for students, and FREE of charge for children below 8 years old. 

2. Dive into history at Negros Museum

I was really happy that I got to visit museums when I went to Bacolod last October 2023. Since October was Museum Month, one checklist for my itinerary was to visit the Negros Museum.

The Negros Museum is perfect for anyone interested in learning about the province’s, both Occidental and Oriental, rich history and culture.

It houses a wide range of exhibits , including artifacts from the prehistoric past, the Spanish colonial era, and the American colonial period, as well as exhibits on the province’s natural history, economy, crafts, modern arts, and culture. 

The museum’s commitment to preserving the culture and heritage of the province is evident in its collection of traditional costumes and tools . Some of the things also tell the horrid past of what the people of the province experienced before.

The Negros Museum is a great place to appreciate the province’s unique heritage. 

And if you want more information during your tour, you can always ask for a guide at the reception area.

They’re knowledgeable and the one that guided me was comfortable and fun to talk with (it’s like we were long-time friends haha).

3. Find serenity at San Sebastian Church

San Sebastian Cathedral, widely known as Bacolod Cathedral , holds a special place in the heart of Negros Occidental. As the seat of the Diocese of Bacolod, it serves as the spiritual center of the province.

This late 19th-century Baroque church has become more than just a place of worship; it’s a symbol of history and faith in Bacolod . 

The story of San Sebastian Church is a tale of humble beginnings and gradual growth. Originally, it was a simple wooden chapel with a modest-sized bell.

Over the years, the church expanded, with new bells donated by parish priests who cared deeply for their congregation.

The transformation into the grand cathedral we see today began in 1876, constructed from coral stones and hardwood sourced from nearby regions. 

This church is not only a place of worship for the Catholic community in Bacolod Philippines but perhaps the most captivating feature of the church is the sense of serenity it offers .

As a Catholic, I felt this when I first visited the church last 2019 while I was seeking my first job.

It’s a place where you can escape the noise of the world and find solace in the whispers of faith. 

4. Discover Pope John Paul II Tower

🕰️ Opening Hours: 8 AM – 5 PM 🎟️ Adults: ₱20 | Students: ₱10

The Pope John Paul II Tower, standing tall and a tourist spot in Bacolod City, is a seven-story structure with a special purpose .

It’s all about Pope John Paul II, the former leader of the Catholic Church, who came to Bacolod on February 20, 1981.  

They built this tower in the area where he held a massive mass of around one million people. The folks from the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corporation (BREDCO) decided to make it as a way of saying thank you to the Pope for coming.

Oh, and they also put up a big bronze statue of him in the yard in 2010. 

If you go up to the top floor of the tower, you’ll find a deck that gives you a fantastic view of Bacolod City. But it’s not just about the view – there’s a bunch of things related to the Pope in there.

You’ll see coins, stuff he used, the chair he sat on, and even the clothes he wore. There’s also a bunch of photos from his visit that people sent in.

At the very top of the tower, you can spot a lit-up cross that shines in the night for all to see. 

5. Unwind at the Capitol Building and Lagoon

The Provincial Capitol Lagoon in Bacolod, run by the Negros Occidental Provincial Government, is a must-visit spot for city tours. It’s also where my tri-city tour started.

It’s a sizable park and lagoon located on Lacson Street, covering three hectares of land.

The history of this place is pretty interesting but the most important thing here is the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol building.

They put it up in 1926 when Governor Jose Locsin was in charge when the sugar industry was still booming, which the province is famous for. 

During World War II, this building became the headquarters for the Japanese Imperial Army but now, it’s where the governor works. 

The park around it is also quite historic .

It’s where they first held the Panaad sa Negros Festival in 1993 , a big celebration of the good life and the main festival of the province where people from all 13 cities in Negros Occidental join in the fun. 

Nowadays, the Provincial Capitol Lagoon is a great place for locals and tourists to have fun . People also love coming here to jog, exercise, or just take a leisurely walk and families even have picnics here on weekends. 

6. Savor local flavors at Manokan Country

One of the popular things to do in Bacolod City is dining in Manokan Country.

Manokan Country in Bacolod is where you can dive into local food like no other place. It’s a bustling spot filled with eateries, and it’s famous for one thing – CHICKEN INASAL !

This isn’t just any chicken; the chicken is marinated in a special sauce and then grilled over charcoal, resulting in a juicy and flavorful dish. I don’t even remember how many inasal I had the last time I visited.

In addition to the grilled chicken, there are many other foods you can try at Manokan Country such as talaba (oysters), atay (liver), isaw (intestines), isol (chicken tail), and puso (heart).

What’s great is that you can eat with your hands , which makes it even more fun and a very “Filipino thing”.

Don’t forget to try the “ unlimited rice ” they offer – it’s a big hit with the hungry crowd. 

7. Experience the Masskara Festival’s vibrant energy

Join in the fun of the Masskara Festival if you’re visiting Bacolod in October!

Masskara Festival is one of the festivals in the Visayas that shows a lively and colorful celebration of resilience and positivity.

It’s also all about fun and energy. It’s a time when the whole city comes alive with music, dancing , and, of course, those famous smiling masks .

I mean, you can see mask designs probably ANYWHERE you go!

You’ll see vibrant parades with people in elaborate costumes and masks . There’s music everywhere, especially at Lacson Street where a lot of different concert stages are located.

They play from early evening up until dawn!

The Masskara Festival is like a big, joyful party that goes on for days , and it’s a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

It’s a time when smiles are contagious, and the city truly lives up to its title as the “City of Smiles.” 

8. Enjoy a day at Campuestohan Highlands Resort

For a day of adventure and relaxation, head to Campuestohan Highlands Resort . It is a popular tourist destination located in the mountains , offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

My tour guide asked me if I wanted to include this in my itinerary but I made a pass. It’s 45 minutes away from the City and is usually included in City tours within Bacolod.

The resort has a wide range of activities for all ages , making it a great place to visit with family and friends.

One of the highlights of this resort is its thrilling outdoor activities such as ziplining, sky biking, and ropes course. The resort also has a spacious swimming pool and a hanging bridge. 

But if you prefer a more laid-back experience (and spending a day here is not enough), Campuestohan has cozy cottages and cabins available for rent. 

9. Visit Balay Negrense, a Spanish-era heritage (Under Renovation)

Step back in time at Balay Negrense, a well-preserved ancestral house in Silay City, Negros Occidental that takes visitors back to the Spanish colonial era.

As you enter this heritage house, you will step into a world of simplicity and elegance, with its traditional wooden structure and vintage furnishings.

Unfortunately, it was closed and under renovation when I visited Silay City. But luckily, some furniture and object can be found in the Negros Museum.

Just like the Grand Piano that you can still play with but don’t expect much about some of its key functioning perfectly.

It was built in 1897 by Don Victor Fernandez Gaston , a sugar baron and the son of the person who revolutionized the sugar-planting techniques in Negros.

The house is filled with antique furniture, paintings, and other memorabilia from the Spanish colonial period. 

10. Join a tour at BongBong’s Factory

BongBong’s Factory in Bacolod offers tours that take you behind the scenes of a sweet adventure. It’s where they make some of the tastiest delicacies in town, especially their famous piaya and barquillos .

When you join one of their tours, you’ll see how one of these treats is created from start to finish. 

The best part is that you can even try making some yourself. They’ll show you the ropes, and you can have a go at it.

It’s a hands-on experience that’s both fun and delicious. Plus, you get to take home some of your freshly made goodies as a tasty souvenir.  

11. Shop for souvenirs at the Association of Negros Producers

Before you leave, don’t forget to bring home some souvenirs to remind you of your wonderful trip.

Personally, I always look for a refrigerator magnet whenever I go to new places. But if you are looking for unique, high-quality items , other than a ref magnet, you should check the Association of Negros Producers.  

The ANP is a non-profit organization that supports local micro-small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that produce high-quality and diverse products from Negros Island.

You can find a wide range of items such as gifts, decor, houseware, furniture, food, fashion, and more ! I even got two shirts here for only ₱150 each.

The showroom is open from Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM . You can also visit the ANP’s website  to browse their online catalog and order your souvenirs online.

By shopping at the ANP, you are not only getting unique and authentic products but also supporting the local artisans and communities who make them .

12. Indulge in the heirloom recipes in El Ideal

If you’re looking for a place to indulge in sweet heirloom recipes, El Ideal Bakery in Silay City, Negros Occidental is the perfect destination.

Established in the circa 1920s by the late Cesar Lacson-Locsin , this bakery is the home of traditional Negrense delicacies that have been passed down from generation to generation. 

The bakery and restaurant is known for its freshly baked goods , including the crowd’s favorite guapple pie, cassava cake topped with milk, and bread pudding.

Other menu items include hamburgers, halo-halo, rice meals, batchoy, and more!

If you asked me what my favorite is, it’s the Angel Cookies!

One of the staff told me the product is called that name because its main ingredient was the hostia – the sacramental bread in Catholic mass. That’s very witty, yummy, and perfect for those who’re not a fan of sweets.

The prices range from less than ₱100 to ₱250 . 

The store has been considered a landmark and heritage site in Silay , with its original facade of the old house still intact as part of its feature design. 

13. Explore art and culture at Bernardino Jalandoni Museum

The Don Bernardino Jalandoni Museum, known as the “Pink House,” is a National Historical Landmark in Silay City, Negros Occidental.

Built in 1908 and was once the home of Don Bernardino Jalandoni, it showcases the opulent lifestyle of the early 20th century.  

The museum is maintained by the Silay Heritage Foundation, Inc . and inside, you’ll find an antique carriage, historic photos, and a unique collection of dolls portraying famous figures .

The upper floor is a time capsule with old instruments, furniture, and family memorabilia. 

The museum is now open to the public and there are also available guides who will tell you more about the story of this place.

My favorite one was when the guide said that one of the daughters who inherited the house decided to paint it pink because that was simply her favorite color that time.

That’s why people call it the ‘Pink House’.

14. Embark on a Silay day trip

Set out on an exciting day trip to Silay, a charming town near Bacolod and known as the “Paris of Negros” because of its many well-preserved ancestral houses.

To be honest, this was the highlight of my tri-city tour. My old soul was really happy to see this heritage house and landmarks and know the story behind them.

Start your day with having breakfast at El Ideal, then a visit to the Silay City Heritage Zone where the Hofeliña Ancestral House and Cinco de Noviembre are located.

Afterwards, head to the Balay Negrense which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Silay City. Or have your lunch at 1898 Casa and Restaurante .

In the afternoon, head to Bernardino Jalandoni Museum, San Diego Pro-Cathedral, and Silay Public Plaza.

Finally, treat your taste buds to some local delicacies at Silay’s eateries, where you can savor authentic Negrense cuisine.

👉 Museums are closed every Monday. 👉 There are 31 heritage houses in Silay City but only 3 were converted into museums. 👉 Hofeliña Ancestral House have artworks from various artists like the famous Juan Luna, Felix Resurrecion Hidalgo, BenCab, Fernando Amorsolo, and even the Philippines’ National Hero, Jose Rizal! 👉 Cinco de Noviembre Mark Point: In 1898, the people of Negros Island fought for their freedom against the Spanish colonizers with a clever plan. They made fake weapons out of wood and bamboo and wore red pants and white shirts to look like the Spanish soldiers and they marched around the island and scared the Spanish, who thought they were outnumbered and gave up. This place honors the bravery and creativity of the people of Negros Island, who won their independence with a trick.

15. Visit the natural beauty of Balaring Mangrove

If you’re looking to explore the natural beauty beyond Bacolod City, a visit to Balaring Mangrove in Silay is a must.

Located just a short distance away, Balaring Mangrove offers a serene and picturesque setting for nature enthusiasts to discover. 

This hidden gem is home to a thriving mangrove forest that provides a habitat for various marine species and serves as an essential ecological system. 

As you walk along the wooden boardwalks, you’ll be surrounded by tall mangrove trees with their unique root systems that extend into the water below.

These roots provide stability for the trees and create a haven for small fish, crabs, and other creatures that call this place home. 

16. Take a trip to Mambukal Mountain Resort

Mambukal Mountain Resort , just roughly one hour drive from Bacolod , is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

Located at the foot of Mount Kanlaon , Mambukal is a sanctuary for nature lovers and this natural haven is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. 

The resort offers a variety of activities such as ziplining, bat watching, and even the opportunity to watch beautiful waterfalls.

If you want to do a more relaxing activity, there are also hot sulfur springs and a swimming pool where you can unwind and rejuvenate. 

In addition to its natural wonders, Mambukal Mountain Resort also provides comfortable and cozy accommodations if you want to stay for more than a day. 

17. Go for a swim at Lakawon Island

End your trip with a visit to Lakawon Island , a small island located in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental , known for its white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and lush greenery. 

It may not be one of the beaches in Bacolod but this island offers more than just swimming.

You can explore the sandbars, go snorkeling to see colorful fish, or simply relax on the beach and enjoy the tropical vibes.

There is also a cozy beachfront resort where you can unwind after a day of fun in the sun. 

Lakawon Island is a great place to recharge and enjoy the simple pleasures of a beach getaway. If I get the chance to visit the Occidental again, I’ll definitely add this to my checklist.

Best Ways to Reach Bacolod  

Reaching Bacolod is relatively straightforward thanks to its well-connected transportation options. Here are the best ways to get to Bacolod: 

✈️ By Plane  

The fastest and most convenient way to reach Bacolod is by plane. The Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BCD) is located around 16 kilometers from Bacolod City.

Several airlines such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific , and AirAsia offer direct flights to Bacolod from major cities in the Philippines, such as Manila, Cebu, Clark , and Davao . 

⛴️ By Ferry  

There are also ferry services to Bacolod from Manila, Iloilo City, and Cagayan de Oro .

The ferry ride from Manila takes about 31 hours and 30 minutes and from Cagayan De Oro for 20 hours both via 2GO Travel. While the ferry ride from Iloilo City takes about 1 hour.

🚌 By Bus  

If you’re in the Visayas region, you can take a bus ride to Bacolod from Northern cities or Southern cities like Dumaguete or Cebu (plus a ferry ride).

The Ceres Liner operates routes to Bacolod, making it a convenient cost-efficient choice if you’re traveling from nearby locations. From Dumaguete, it will take around 6 hours to reach the City of Smiles. 

How to Get Around in Bacolod City?  

Getting around in Bacolod City is relatively easy, thanks to various transportation options. Here are some options on how you can navigate the city: 

🚦 Tricycles

Tricycles are a common mode of transportation in Bacolod City or anywhere in the Philippines. These three-wheeled vehicles can take you to various destinations within the city, especially to places that might not be easily accessible by larger vehicles.

Just remember to agree on the fare with the driver before your ride. 

Jeepneys are a popular form of public transportation in the Philippines, including Bacolod. They follow designated routes and are an economical way to travel around the city .

You can hail a jeepney from the side of the road and pay a small fare when you board.

Taxis are available in Bacolod City, particularly at the airport, bus terminals, and malls. They offer a more comfortable and convenient mode of transportation , but make sure the driver uses the meter or agrees on a fare beforehand.

While not as common within the city itself, buses are a viable option for traveling to destinations outside Bacolod.

If you plan to explore nearby towns or provinces, you can catch a bus from either Bacolod City North or South Terminal.

I use this often whenever I’m in a new place since I can see my real-time location in the app.

How Much Time Do You Need in Bacolod City?  

How much time you need in Bacolod City depends on your interests and how much you want to see.

If you are just interested in seeing the main tourist attractions, you can probably get away with spending 2-3 days in Bacolod City.

However, if you want to explore more of the city and beyond it, you may want to spend 4-5 days or more. I spent 4 days here for tours and to experience the Masskara festival.

How to get to bacolod city, getting to bacolod city from the airport.

If you are getting to Bacolod City from the airport. You should know that the airport is located in  Silay City , 15 kilometers far from Bacolod City. If you are riding a van will cost you  150 PHP  per person and it will drive you to SM which is in the city center of Bacolod.

There are also available Grab and taxis. Grab could be your best option if you are traveling with more people.  Grab  prices are around  350-500 PHP . Taxis are available for  450 PHP . Just choose the option which adapts better to your comfort and budget.

GETTING TO BACOLOD CITY BY FASTCRAFT FERRY FROM ILOILO

If you’re getting to Bacolod City from Iloilo. You can take a fastcraft ferry with regular schedules to and from both islands. The fees vary but the cheapest one you can get as a tourist is around  $4.50 USD  only. to  $6 USD  depending on the ferry company that you choose for your trip.

One of the many great things about traveling to Bacolod is how everything is really cheap and affordable! From the food and fares, this city’s affordability will keep your budget intact and will allow you to enjoy different things to do in Bacolod!

GETTING TO BACOLOD CITY FROM GUIMARAS ISLAND

If you are getting to Bacolod City from Guimaras Island. You have to ride a jeepney to Libertad Market from Central Market, the ride is 8.50 PHP per person. From Libertad Market you have to walk to SaveMore where jeepneys leave to Pulupandan. The journey takes almost an hour and it costs  30 PHP  to the ferry port.

The ferry going to Sibunag in Guimaras leaves early morning before 8 am. The ferry going to San Lorenzo leaves at 11 am, so take note of the schedule since there is only one boat leaving daily. The boat takes an hour and it costs  100 PHP  for an adult and  50 PHP  for a 6 years old if you are traveling with a kid and we were doing going from Bacolod to Guimaras Island.

We had hard time riding this boat and the water was coming inside since it’s so windy getting to San Lorenzo in Guimaras Island. Maybe it’s better if you choose the other route coming from Iloilo City.

Just expect a hard ride if you ride the boat. It’s limited to 55 people but they also add motorbikes, sacks and we think is overloaded based in what we saw apart of getting dizzy during the ride.

TRANSPORTATION AROUND BACOLOD CITY

Since Bacolod is a highly urbanized city, you can easily go from one place to another through  jeepneys, taxis, Grab taxi, tricycles, motorcycles and shuttle cars/buses . However, for first timers, riding a jeepney could get a little confusing because you would have to be familiar with the routes if you are to ride one.

But it sure sounds like an adventure, right? After all, the good thing about getting lost is meeting the friendliest people. The  Hiligaynons of Bacolod  will never hesitate to give you directions and talk to you if you need any help!

DAILY BUDGET TO VISIT BACOLOD

Those visiting Bacolod City are in for a treat. Many of the food and hotels in the city are inexpensive but more than satisfying. A full meal in the city can go for as low as  80 PHP per person  while a bottle of  beer  can be bought for around  50-65 PHP .  Restaurant food  can be bought for around  500-800 PHP  for two people. Pretty cheap, right? And if you only have  20 PHP  in your pocket and you’re feeling pretty hungry,  you can even buy plenty of street food  with your cash.

Other delightful installation include the Heroes Hall where you can find statues of different characters like The Hulk, Wonder Woman, Thor, and even Elvis Presley. They also have a massive King Kong statue that actually roars so loud, it can be heard all around the resort.

Campuestohan rests 800 meters above sea level and the weather there is comparable to the country’s coldest spots like Tagaytay and Baguio. TILASAY/SILAY TOURIST SPOTS

9. marvel at the ruins in talisay city.

The Ruins is an iconic destination in the region and the entire country as well. Recently, more people have come to visit this historic place because of its beauty. It’s truly an Instagram-worthy spot! Historically speaking, this Italianate mansion was created for Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson.

It was his way of commemorating his Portuguese wife after she passed away from giving birth to their 11th child. Crazy, right? The Ruins sits on a 440-hectare sugar plantation owned by the aforementioned baron. It was eventually burnt down to prevent Japanese forces from using it as their headquarters during the Second World War. What stands today is what’s left of the building, which still looks beautiful and majestic despite it being “ruined.”

Now, it can be visited daily from 8 AM to 8 PM for an entrance fee of  less than 2 USD  per person. You can also hold special events in its gardens.

10. go around silay city.

You can find Silay City in the North of Bacolod. Silay, so much as Bacolod, has a beautiful history and a rich culture. The city is filled with ancestral homes and mansions, old building and historical sites which makes it quite popular among tourists visiting Negros. The city’s vintage look reels in visitors who enjoy architecture and are interested in taking lots of beautiful photos.

There are many wonderful places to visit in Silay. The following spots are some of the closest ones to the city’s public plaza and can be easily explored by yourself or on a tour.

11. BALAY NEGRENSE  

Previously the mansion of sugar baron Victor Fernandez Gaston, this 19th-century building has been turned into a museum. It now houses beautiful pieces of furniture and has officially been declared a heritage house by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 1994.

Locals and tourists love visiting this mansion because of its creepy vibe and the  wonderful story  behind it. It is also the first museum in Negros Occidental.

12. ENJOYING THE VIEW AT DUYAN CAFE

Enjoying Lantawan View for breakfast at Duyan Cafe in Silay.  Duyan Cafe is 30 minutes driving far from Bacolod. And very close to Silay. The views are so beautiful and it’s peaceful place to enjoy a coffee.

13. VISIT EL IDEAL BAKERY

Another oldie but goldie in Negros is El Ideal Bakery. It is the oldest bakeshop and restaurant in the entire province, and is located in the  Cesar Lacson Locsin Ancestral House , another heritage site.

Here, you can enjoy all kinds of meals served with bread or rice. Pastries and delicacies abound for tourists to enjoy; there’s  piaya , angel cookies and all sorts of pies. You will definitely want to eat your heart out in this local favorite.

14. BERNARDINO JALANDONI MUSEUM

Famously known as the “Pink House,” this ancestral home has been a National Historical Landmark since 1993. It’s unique color and architecture attracts many visitors, all of whom give nothing but praise to the museum.

Completed in 1908, the house is a beautiful combination of Silaynon architecture and European furnishing. Bernardino Jalandoni Museum showcases the richness of Philippine history and how great its foreign influences were as well.

15. SAN DIEGO PRO-CATHEDRAL

Easily distinguishable from all other churches in the province, San Diego Pro-Cathedral is the only church in Negros Occidental that has a dome. If you’re wondering what a pro-cathedral is, it’s basically a runner up to the existing cathedral in the province, the San Sebastian Cathedral.

Though it ranks at second place in this respect, it is still a beautiful building that attracts many tourists. It was designed by an Italian architect and was built in 1925.

16. PULANG TUBIG WATERFALLS

Pulang Tubig  (literally “red water”) can be found in a protected area called the  Northern Negros Natural Park . The park is surrounded by lush forests and several river systems that make the area a tranquil sanctuary, perfect for those who want to be one with nature.

HOW TO GET TO PULANG TUBIG WATERFALLS

If you want to get to Pulang Tubig waterfalls.  You need to go trekking from a lovely community called Patag which is 20 minutes away from Silay City and about an hour-long ride from Bacolod City. Aside from the majestic waterfalls, the park is also home to native birds, deer, bats and different local plants.

17. visit manokan country.

When visiting Manokan Country you have to try Inasal. It  is Bacolod’s pride and joy, making it the #1 must-try food in the city. This unique version of charcoal grilled chicken originated in Bacolod and is cooked with a marinade of  calamansi , coconut vinegar, pepper and  annato .

All these herbs and spices give  inasal  its unique flavor that people from all over the world fall in love with. It’s a must in the list of Bacolod tourist spots Moanokan Country.

Since Bacolod is  inasal ‘s hometown, there’s no better place to try it than here. Head on out to  Manokan Country , Bacolod’s street market that specializes in this delightful chicken dish. There are a few places where you can try chicken always full of people! For sure it’s the best place to go for dinner. Prices of orders are  around 100 PHP chicken and rice !

18. TRY CANSI

If you’ve ever heard of  bulalo , it would be easy enough for you to imagine what  cansi  is, the Ilonggo version of said Filipino dish. For those who think those two words sound made up,  bulalo  and  cansi  are basically dishes cooked with the same main ingredient: beef shank.

However, the shank isn’t necessarily the highlight of  cansi . The star is actually the bone marrow, which can be eaten by using the wrong end of your spoon/fork to scoop the marrow from the bone. Even shaking the bone downwards to let the marrow fall out might do the trick!

Prices for order is around  350 PHP  and it’s a complete soup full of meat that can be share for a few of you. One of the things to do in Bacolod for sure!

19. HAVE A SWEET TASTE AT CALEA

Our favorite place for dessert and coffee. You can fine delicious cake for  100 PHP  and there are so many flavors to taste. Great place for a coffee, it’s located in the popular Lacson Street where you will find many restaurants around. Another of the Bacolod tourist spots that you cant miss if you are a foodie.

20. MILA’S BAKERY

Mila’s Bakery and coffee shop has delicious bread and the most popular ones are Bitchokoy and Potato Cake. There are sweets starting from 10 PHP and the place it’s crowded in the afternoon. You can find at Robinson’s Triangle Shopping area.

21. HYKSOS PALA-PALA SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

In Hyksos Pala-Pala Restaurant in  Bacolod Bayview Foodcourt in Burgos Street,  you’ll have the chance to munch on those yummy fresh seafood of Bacolod! The process here is easy.

You’ll choose which fresh seafood you want from the  wet market area  and just let them know how you want it to be cooked. Make sure to try  sinigang na isda, kinilaw, and buttered shrimps.

22. ENJOY MASKARA FESTIVAL

Celebrated every fourth Sunday of October, Masskara Festival is one of the best street parties in the entire nation. Bacolod is famously known as The City of Smiles, and the masks worn by performers on the streets show eternal smiles on their faces as they give their praise and thanks through dance. All the participants aim to please audiences and do their best to win the annual street dance competition. At night, the competition is taken to a whole new level with the Electric Masskara event where participants use lights for their costumes.

BEACHES AROUND BACOLOD AREA

23. lakawon island.

Lakawon Island is located North Bacolod almost two hours driving. It’s a perfect place to swim, relax, snorkeling or doing activities like kayaking. You can spend the day and even stay at night if you wish. There are cottages for rent.

HOW TO GET FROM BACOLOD TO LAKAWON ISLAND

The bus from Bacolod to Cadiz Viejo will take 1 hour and a half. The bus fare from Bacolod North Terminal to Cadiz Viejo is  105 PHP .

Once in Cadiz Viejo a round trip boat is  150 PHP . You will have to pay  20 PHP  Terminal Fee and the entrance fee to Lakawon Island is  150 PHP .

24. TAWHAI FLOATING BAR

Tawhai Floating Bar is one of the biggest in Asia. To get to Tawhai Floating Bar is only possible by boat from Lakawon Island. There are unlimited return boats for  300 PHP  and includes a soft drink.

25. CARBIN REEF

Carbin Reef is a perfect place to enjoy swimming and snorkeling. There are cottages for renting if you want to spend the day but there aren’t places to stay at night.

HOW TO GET FROM BACOLOD TO CARBIN REEF

If you want to get from Bacolod to Carbin Reef. You have to get a bus from North Ceres Bus Terminal and going to Sagay. Prices are  170 PHP  and the travel time from Bacolod to Sagay is around 3 hours.

Once in Sagay Bus Terminal get a tricycle to the port around  70 PHP . The boat will take 20 minutes and prices for the boat is  1200 PHP  good enough for 10 people. Carbin Reef entrance fee is  100 PHP .

WHAT TO EAT IN BACOLOD CITY

There are oysters available in Manokan Country apart from the popular Inasal Chicken. The prices is  60 PHP  for a dish and it’s quite big the order. So delicious for a cheap price!

Bibingka is another popular Filipino street food. This egg based dessert is eaten alongside .It’s usually served on a banana leaf. Prices are starting at 5 PHP and it’s filled with buko.

This seafood fish famous all over the Philippines is said to be comparable to ceviche. In essence, though,  kinilaw  (literally “eaten raw”) refers to the process of using vinegar’s acidity to cook meat or fish. It is more commonly used with fish and is served with other souring ingredients like green mangoes. It is then seasoned with pepper, chili and onions.

It does well as an appetizer but is more ideally served with beer as  pulutan  (finger food). With the abundance of fresh fish in Bacolod,  kinilaw  isn’t hard to find.

LUMPIANG BACOLOD

Also known as  lu mpiang sariwa  or  lumpiang ubod , this delicacy is literally just fresh spring rolls and is abundant in Bacolod. Unlike the more typical preparation of spring rolls,  lumpiang bacolod  is not friend and is eaten with a soft wrapper, special peanut sauce and vegetables inside. This dish is pretty common all over the country and is a popular  merienda  or mid-day snack.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, there are plenty of other seafood available in Bacolod like shrimp and  talaba  (oysters). Of course, different kinds of fish also abound in Bacolod and they are prepared and processed in different ways. One famous variant of fish found in the region is  danggit , or salted and dried rabbitfish. It’s crunchy and salty, perfect to dip in vinegar, eat with hot rice and fried egg in the morning. Yum!

FESTIVALS IN BACOLOD CITY

Like any Catholic or Europe-influenced nation, the Philippines holds lots of festivals all over its islands. These celebrations vary from place to place, and some of the most exciting and colorful ones can be found in the Visayas region, particularly in Negros Occidental. PANAAD SA NEGROS FESTIVAL

As we’ve mentioned, the Philippines is home to a multitude of festivals all over the archipelago. One province doesn’t hold just one festival each year; each one has various things to celebrate! A great way to catch up on all the festivals you’ve missed in Negros is to attend the Panaad sa Negros Festival.

This celebration is held in Panaad Park and Panaad Stadium. Events include the Festival Dances competition, Folk Dance competition and the  Lin-ay sang Negros  (Festival Queen Coronation Night).

The City has been nicknamed the City of Smiles. Why so? A trip to the Top Tourist Destinations in Bacolod City might give a curious traveler a clue!

Must see Places in Bacolod City

1] negros museum.

A great place to begin a deep dive into Bacolod’s culture is the Negros Museum. This showcases the city’s history and annals of its founding families, as well as Negrense culture must-knows.  The structure was built in 1925 as the Provincial Agriculture Building.

The museum is the first in its kind to not house precious archaeological artifacts, but rather was designed to display Negrense lifestyle and society, which includes old furnishings and loaned items from ancestral houses

2] Negros Capitol Park and Lagoon

The lovely Capitol Park and lagoon near the museum is a must-see too after a tour. This park, which houses several important buildings with neoclassical architecture, is a great spot to catch the famous Bacolod sunset.

One of the features of the park are matching sculptures depicting a woman standing alongside a water buffalo and that of a man pulling another water buffalo. These sculptures are located at the northern and southern ends of the lagoon. These figures were executed by Italian sculpture Francesco Riccardo Monti

3] Negros Forest Park 

Inside the Forest Park v isitors can see rare warty pigs, leopard cats, spotted deer, bleeding heart pigeons and many more animals in danger of vanishing forever.

They are open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays for Maintenance. Entrance Fee: Adult= P100.00; Children and Senior Citizen P50.00.

4] Bacolod’s New Government Center

Department of Tourism (DOT) 6 has cited Bacolod City’s famous New Government Center (NGC)  as one of the “must-see” tourism destinations in Western Visayas.  

5] San Sebastian Cathedral

This place of worship in the heart of Bacolod City is central to the people’s culture and spirituality. This church is notable for its well-preserved structure, made from coral stones and old hardwoods.

6] Pope John Paul II Tower

The seven-story buidling commemorates the late Pope John Paul II’s pastoral visit to Bacolod last February 20, 1981. The tower was built in the area where he delivered one of his most powerful messages on behalf of the poor.

7] Jojo Vito Designs Gallery

You can experience Masskara Festival vibe all year at Jojo Vito Designs Gallery in Bacolod City.  It’s a great place to buy Masskara souvenirs and spark your creativity by painting your own mask.  One of the must-see spots when you visit Bacolod City.

8] Sharyns Kansi

Cansi meat is very soft that fell off the bone and included the marrow while the steaming hot soup is amazingly delicious. You could tell that it was prepared with effort and made perfect by years of experience. No wonder Sharyns Cansi is 32nd place out of 50 hawkers in the World Street Food Congress.

You will smell a robust beefy flavor once inside the restaurant. We highly recommend this place, so don’t leave Bacolod without trying it at least once.

9] Manokan Country

It would be a sin to go to Bacolod and skip out on its mouth-watering dishes, such as the famed chicken inasal . To get this favorite in its most “authentic” form, head on to Manokan Country.

This food hub is home to various diners and stalls, most of them specializing in this celebrated grilled chicken dish. Heaps and heaps of rice, with dipping sauces are highly recommended.

To finish off a food trip, or get some pasalubong for the trip home, Calea is the place to go. This local patisserie has a wide selection of cakes and pastries that you can enjoy either on the spot or brought back as gifts.

Calea is easy to locate in the city proper, just near the L’Fisher Hotel.

Must see Places near Bacolod City

1] the ruins.

Photographers and shutterbugs should not miss The Ruins situated in Talisay, which is part of Metro Bacolod. This picturesque park was once a sugar plantation’s manor; today the shell of the old house and the exquisite gardens make an excellent venue for photo trips and sunset viewing.

2] Balay Negrense

Also in Metro Bacolod is the Balay Negrenese of Silay. This house is an exemplar of the Spanish-era bahay na bato architecture, with a stone first floor and wooden second floor. The interior display different artisan pieces and antiques collected over the years.

5] Lakawon Island

This white sand island is famous for having some of the best beaches in the area. Lakawon Island is an excellent place for family outings or picnics, thanks to its facilities for water sports as well as pristine covers for swimming, sunbathing and relaxing.

6] Mambukal Mountain Resort

For visitors with less affinity for the sand and surf, Mambukal Mountain Resort is the place to go. Its hiking trail takes visitors to see seven beautiful waterfalls in the hills.

The city of Bacolod, sits in the northwestern area of the island of Negros in the Philippines.

It’s also known as the City of Smiles, and, true to its name, the hospitable residents of Bacolod always greet you with a warm smile.

This vibrant city boasts a rich cultural heritage that blends Spanish and Filipino influences. All of which can be seen in the spectacular architecture, cuisine, and festivals.

We spent a week with friends exploring the Bacolod tourist spots and surrounding area. So here’s a list of our top things to do in Bacolod.

1. The Ruins

The Ruins are definitely the most well known of the Bacolod tourist spots, come day or night. Even more so on a special occasion.

The Ruins are beautifully decorated and have lanes, gardens and arches making it a popular venue for weddings. There is also a restaurant where you can grab drinks, food and snacks.  

We recommend visiting around sunset to see The Ruins at their most beautiful. This has to be one of the best things to do in the Philippines if you’re in Bacolod.

It’s one of the most famous and photographed destinations in Talisay/ Bacolod and formally known as the Taj Mahal of the Philippines.

2. Lakawon Island

Lakawon Island is an absolute paradise and just a short trip outside of the city. It consists of pristine white sand, turquoise waters and a family run beach resort.

This stunning beach is perfect for a day of relaxing in the sun and soaking up the island life with a cocktail in your hand.

After visiting many beaches on our Philippines itinerary , including those of Palawan and Cebu, we can honestly say that Lakawon Island is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen.

The fact that it’s not so mainstream or known by tourists makes it extra special.

Definitely up there for us as one of the best things to do in the Philippines .

3. Tawhai Floating Bar

Tawhai Floating Bar  is the largest floating bar in Asia and a must if you’re ever in Bacolod. It is only accessible via boat transfers from Lakawon Island .

Tawhai is actually a local dialect that translates to ‘relaxed’, and it certainly lives up to its name.

You can definitely sit back, chill and enjoy spectacular views of the Lakawon Island and much more.

Or, if you feel more like partying, drinks are flowing and music is playing, so the choice is yours!

Moreover, if you’re feeling really adventurous you can even jump into the spectacularly blue ocean from the 1st or 2nd decks of the boat.  

Tawhai Floating Bar is a great way to spend some time and has to be one of the best things to do in Bacolod.

4. Eat Healthy

We were searching for some healthy vegan food in the city and came across two amazing restaurants – Wholly Grounds and Fresh Start .

Wholly Grounds offers a delicious variety of organic, vegan, Filipino and Western dishes, including sandwiches, tacos, falafels and rice bowls. All pretty inexpensive and served up in beautiful surroundings by friendly staff.

Fresh Start is another organic and natural store with an adjoining cafe that serves a selection of amazingly fresh food including vegetarian and vegan options. This hip and trendy cafe is a joy to visit and the food is ‘top notch’.

We chose to alternate between these places every day for a week, they were that good!

In the Philippines, it’s hard to find nutritious, organic food, especially amongst the Bacolod tourist spots. So we were in our element when we found these two gems in the city centre.  

Although ‘rice is life’ in the Philippines, it was nice to splash out on a good eggplant and hummus burger with sweet potato fries!

5. Volunteer At Pawssion Project

Not quite one of the Bacolod tourist spots but something we’re very passionate about.

Pawssion Project was actually the reason we decided to visit Bacolod. Our friend who is the founder of this incredible organisation is so selfless and has such a passion for making the Philippines a better place for dogs.  

She believes that dogs are voiceless, so we have to be their voice and let them fulfil a happy, loving life. She works hard to spread the word across the whole nation and set an example of how dogs should be treated.

Because of that, we fell in love with her passion and had to pay the dogs at the shelter a visit.  

We felt had to spread some love and raise awareness of this new establishment that really deserves all the exposure it can get.

Even during the week we spent in Bacolod, we saw a drastic change in the life of some of the dogs. So if you’re ever thinking about paying a visit to Bacolod, you should definitely find Malou and the shelter.

6. Duyan Cafe

Duyan Cafe was one of our favourite spots on our tour of Bacolod. It’s perfect for foodies, photographers and nature lovers.

‘Duyan’ translates to cradle or hammock in English, from the native Filipino language Tagalog. And what better setting than to sit in a hammock and look over the surrounding mountains whilst enjoying your breakfast.

Serving up fresh cakes, sandwiches and of course local rice dishes, Duyan Cafe is a definite hot spot amongst both locals and tourists.

The perfect spot to start your day off on the right footing!

Seda Capitol Central

Located 1 miles from SM City Bacolod, Seda Capitol Central offers modern accommodation in Bacolod.

Bacolod Travel Tourist Spots and Attractions

The ruins (mansion).

The Ruins , Bacolod City’s most famous attraction , is located on top of a hill and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Find out the love story of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson and Maria Braga through The Ruins, which was burned during the war and now serves as a prominent historic place in Bacolod. He had their initials carved on every post of the mansion to prove his undying devotion to Maria. The two Ms, facing each other, signify Mariano and Maria.

The Negros Museum

The Negros Museum , which was completed in 1925 and designed by the architect Melendrez Sabio, is a museum that highlights the province’s history. It’s next to the Hall of Justice, three minutes from the Provincial Capitol. The Negros Museum is the finest Bacolod City tourist attraction to visit if you want to learn more about the island. It contains ancient historical relics and contemporary local artworks that represent events from Negros Islands and periods throughout history.

Don Salvador Benedicto

Don Salvador Benedicto , which is known as “the little Baguio,” has one of the coolest climates in the province. This municipality serves as a beautiful backdrop for this mountain community located at an elevation of 1,400 meters above sea level. With its towering pine trees, lush forest, and vibrant mountains, it’s no wonder that Don Salvador Benedicto is regarded as one of the most attractive sites in the province. Although much about the place is stunning to behold, it also contains notable landmarks such as the Lantawan or Viewing Deck, which overlooks Malatan-og waterfalls, Villa Ica’s verdant and nature-centric environment, among other notable sites.

Ilaya Highland Resort

The newest addition to the growing number of mountain resorts in the province is   Ilaya Highland Resort . The Balinese-inspired architectural elements of Ilaya and its lovely landscaped garden stand out among the existing Patag facilities, which are mostly basic. Ilaya is situated in such a perfect location that you can enjoy a gorgeous view of the mountains, Silay’s lowlands, and even Panay Island in the distance. Laguerta Vintage Glass Museum

The  Laguerta Vintage Glass Museum  is a must-see for any tourist visiting Bacolod, which is located in Punta Taytay. They have a collection that begins with decanters and extends through decorative items, dinnerware, commemorative plates, and Victorian lamps. Thus, the visual and aesthetic impacts of this selection are really amazing. Tomas Claridad Casiano is a known floral designer from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles who gathered this collection.

Campuestohan Highlands Resort

Campuestohan Highlands Resort  is a rural theme park on a 5-hectare highland with mountains that sit just outside Bacolod. It features a variety of Native American-themed tepees, each accommodating up to 6 people. Mambukal Mountain Resort

On the 13-hectare banana-shaped island lies Asia’s most extensive floating bar, also known as “The Floating Bar.” The island is known for its pristine white sand and transparent blue water.

Balay Negrense

The  Balay Negrense , Hiligaynon for Negrense House, also known as Victor Fernandez Gaston Ancestral Home, is a museum in Silay City, near Bacolod City, depicting the lifestyle of a late 19th-century Negrense sugar baron. It is notable for being the first museum in the province of Negros Occidental to be built. This home is an excellent example of Spanish-era Bahay na Bato architecture with a stone ground floor and wooden second floor. The inside presentation includes various handcrafted items and antiques collected over time.

San Sebastian Cathedral

The  San Sebastian Cathedral  is a 19th-century Roman Catholic cathedral in Bacolod. It serves as the diocesan see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bacolod. In 1882, it was opened to the public, and it now contains the Bishop’s Palace within its grounds. The Philippine Historical Committee considers it a significant historical landmark because of its architecture.

Bernardino Jalandoni Museum

The Bernardino Jalandoni Museum, also known as the Bernardino Jalandoni House, is a must-see tourist attraction in Silay City, Philippines. It is the original home of Don Bernardino and Doña Ysabel Jalandoni. Because of its bright pink paint that draws attention immediately, it has been dubbed the “Pink House.” The memorabilia from the Jalandonis’ history are on display at the museum. According to portions of its architecture, pieces have come from Mindoro and Germany.

Pulang Tubig Falls

The Pulang Tubig Falls is in the Northern Negros Natural Park, a protected area in Silay City’s northern mountainous forest region. If you’d like to rest on Bacolod Beach but still appreciate the gift of water, this natural wonder is for you. It was named due to the color of the water that flowed from the falls during Japanese rule. It was claimed that a Japanese headquarters sat atop the mountain and that the waters became red due to soldiers’ blood.

Pope John Paul II Tower

The Pope John Paul II Tower was erected on the same site where the Pope had held a ceremony before a crowd of almost a million persons on February 20, 1981. This is where Pope John Paul II delivered one of his most impassioned speeches for the poor. The tower has seven levels, each with its photographs and mementos of Pope John Paul II.

New Government Center

The New Government Center, known as just NGC, is now one of Bacolod City’s newest attractions. It stands on a 5-hectare lot owned by Fernando F. Gonzaga, Inc. and Angela Estate, Inc., donated in July 2010 to replace the old City Hall on Araneta-Luriaga Streets. Joggers visit the grounds of the New Government Center, pet owners with their dogs, friends, and family hanging out together, among other things. It’s also been famous for corporate shoots and workshops for photographers.
