Recent tour reviews

It was amazing!!! From the moment they went on stage to the very last second it was just so much positive energy coming from the band. The crowd was bad, but that isn’t The Killers’ fault! They did the absolute most and it paid off. Brandon hit those high notes despite his flu, Ronnie was legendary on the drums, Ted was amazing, the choir was amazing, et cetera et cetera. It’s a shame (especially for the people that DID know all their songs) that the crowd bothered them so much that they didn’t play Mr. Brightside, but again, the band isn’t to blame.

These Las Vegas legends know how to give a great performance!

This was, so far, the best concert for The Killers that I've ever seen (& I've seen them 3 times already). The acoustics for the Staples Center wasn't the absolute best, but it didn't matter when the whole stadium was singing at the top of their lungs along with the band. First of all, since this was the Wonderful Wonderful Tour, I thought the band would play mostly songs from the new album, but to my surprise, they performed a great mix of songs from their entire discography. What surprised me the most was that The Killers played a ton more songs from their Hot Fuss album than they ever had before. They even dug deep to perform such notable songs like "Andy, You're A Star" & "Smile Like You Mean It". A beautifully sweet touch was when the band performed a new, sort of spur-of-the-moment, song about Los Angeles...a song they had written on the road just before their L.A. leg of the tour. One of the major highlights of the entire concert was when the band had invited a young teenage fan up onto the stage to play the drums on the song "For Reasons Unknown". Apparently this has become an ongoing tradition of the band, to invite fans up on the stage to perform with them. This was such a touching, yet totally bad-ass moment, & I hope The Killers keep on doing this at every concert tour from now on. By the end of the concert, my friends & I had lost our voices from singing & screaming so loudly, but it was one thousand percent worth it. The Killers proved with their electrifying & humorous stage presence, along with their amazing voices & talent, that they will forever hold the spot of being my all-time favorite band.

I actually saw the show at Barclays on Tuesday the 8th. Let me start by saying I see a lot of concerts every year and was only familiar with the better known of The Killers songs. Having said that - they were EXCELLENT! Flowers is a magnificent front man with a set of pipes to carry stadiums. The band is flawless and so rock and roll. I will judge a band by how much they can hook me with a song I’ve never heard before . From the opening with Wonderful Wonderful and The Man thru The Calling start to the encore I was dazzled. I downloaded everything and I’m now a confirmed fan. I will see them again ASAP. One of the best live I have seen -ever. And I’m no spring chicken.

Event Details

The killers will be heading back to the road to celebrate both pressure machine and imploding the mirage , along with their much-loved catalog of global hits, in 2022. .

Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 23rd, at 10 am local time via the band’s website or on Ticketmaster.com .

The Killers will release their seventh studio album, entitled Pressure Machine , on Island Records on August 13, 2021 .  The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett , and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage , released last year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ majestic, critically-acclaimed 2020 album Imploding the Mirage , “everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers . “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence.  And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”  Indeed, for the first time since 2004, the relentless momentum and pressures of being in a globally-renowned, stadium-shaking band stopped.  Enter Pressure Machine : a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and The Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.

A video from Brandon about Pressure Machine can be seen now via Apple Music.  Click HERE to watch it.

A quieter, character-study-driven album, Pressure Machine lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills.  Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying “ had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s .”  The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town.  “ We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr . “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”  Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender.  But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged.  I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

The resulting record is an aural document of growing up - and living - in the American Southwest, told from a myriad of perspectives.  For the first time in his life, Flowers had complete lyrics before a note of music was put to tape.  No stranger to inhabiting different characters in songs, on Pressure Machine he steps into the shoes of some of the people whose lives he watched unfold as a teen.  The album weaves the threads of Flowers’ signature lyricism throughout his career into a perfect whole culminating in the most elegant album The Killers have ever made.

Through its characters and also its title, the album squares up to the unbending pressure of the American dream compounded by religious disenchantment.  A born optimist, moments of beauty inevitably shine out of the grief of Flowers's songs:  the healing arrival of summer, the first crop of hay, sweeter skies.  Pressure Machine’s stories detail the real life personal battles, overwhelming regrets, local tragedies, and the opioid epidemic that hit Flowers’ hometown, as well as every hometown in America.  Flowers sings about the choices people make, for better and for worse, and the consequences of those choices; the ones who were left behind, and the ones that can’t be forgotten.

Pressure Machine’s album cover image was shot on the highway just outside Nephi, taken as photographer Wes Johnson passed a roadside inspirational display set up by a local Baptist church.  Johnson took dozens of incredible images of Flowers’ hometown throughout the early part of 2021, many of which are featured in the album’s packaging for the physical edition.

Review: The Killers prove they can still slay fans with energetic modern rock

Brandon Flowers, frontman for The Killers, showed off his vocal range during Tuesday night's concert at the Schottenstein Center.

“If you came looking for rock 'n’ roll, you came to the right place.”

That’s what The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers announced to the nearly sold out Schottenstein Center Tuesday night.

The Killers have seemed to exist in a time-exempt capsule. They equally feel like a nostalgia grab for the 2000s, but they also feel like a Brit rock/New Wave band from the ‘80s.

They’re your present-day rock star’s favorite band. They have two of the biggest crowd-pleasers in “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me” yet somehow feel criminally underrated.

Summer stop: Jackson Browne's summer tour to make Columbus stop in June

All of the above was evident by the fanbase that showed up at their concert Tuesday night at the Schottenstein Center. Fans ranged from kids going to their first concert to twentysomethings to veteran rock 'n’ rollers.

While they have never managed to dull the noise mainstream-wise of their debut album “Hot Fuss” — which turns 20 next year — their 2011 album, “Wonderful, Wonderful,” was their first No 1. album on the U.S. Billboard 200. Their latest album, “Pressure Machine,” was released in 2021.

While The Killers have undergone multiple iterations of its lineup, the band has finally reformed with three of its original members for their upcoming eighth album. Although they always have different touring lineups. The Killers, in recent years, have been largely a training ground for the basement rockers who were inspired by them back during their mainstream debut in 2003.

While their "Imploding the Mirage" tour is named after their 2020 album of the same name, the show was a full retrospective of everything from their beginning to now.

Flowers even honored the rock 'n’ roll legends that came before him like Elvis Presley, donning a black blazer, white tank top, black slacks & black leather shoes.

In one moment, you could see that he feels the music in his body. In other moments, you could hear it from his soul when he belted Freddie Mercury-like notes.

Flowers’ voice can go lower than the bass player yet reach soaring heights like belting into the Grand Canyon in songs like “Shot at the Night” and “Be Still,” the latter being the highlight of Flowers’ live vocal performance.

There were times in songs where it was clear that Flowers’ energy had been spent and he was tired. During their performance of “Somebody Told Me,” while a crowd pleaser, Flowers let the audience do most of the singing. It is understandable though; he sings many lyrics in close succession.

Flowers even remarked on his voice about halfway into the hour-and-a-half set. “When we came out here tonight, I was a little worried about my voice,” Flowers said. “It’s a frightening thing, I just wanna do good for you.”

However, the crowd’s energy fueled Flowers.

“When we got on stage,” he said. “It just came right back to me.”

The entire concert Flowers smiled at the crowd like being reunited with old friends.

He even remarked that they were now “big time” by playing the Schottenstein Center. It seems that even The Killers forget how much of an icon they are.

While Flowers is the face and voice of The Killers, the band’s original drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr.’s talents must be commended. His drum solos during songs like “Spaceman” and “A Dustland Fairytale” are enamoring to witness and the crowd couldn’t get enough.

Electric guitarist Ted Sablay, who also served as one of the openers, absolutely killed (pun intended) his guitar solos in songs like “Caution.”

Concert coming this fall: Peter Gabriel to bring 'i/o - The Tour' to Columbus on Sept. 25

There was plenty of call-and-response with the audience throughout the entire concert, but near the end of the show during “All These Things That I’ve Done,” the entire crowd sang one of the most iconic lines in modern rock 'n’ roll for several minutes before Flowers even sang it.

“I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier.”

What does it mean? No one knows, but Flowers definitely has soul in the way he projects his voice. Flowers even remarked that nobody projects his voice like he does. But he commends his band, particularly Vannucci, for giving him the drive to belt.

The show began and ended with explosions of confetti, pyrotechnics, laser light shows and rock 'n’ roll. The Killers didn’t leave it all on the stage, they left it all in the crowd. Flowers stepped over the barrier between the crowd and the stage many times. Vannucci even threw his drumsticks into the crowd at the end of the show.

It’s safe to say that The Killers will remain in their rock 'n’ roll status, but will they be a band we wished we paid closer attention to once they are no longer here?

Luckily for now, we get to look on the bright side and be thankful that we don’t have to.

It’s not confidential: The Killers’ smash hit is turning 20

In honor of the 20th anniversary of one of the band’s signature tunes, let’s look back on the song that helped make The Killers a household name.

Brandon Flowers of The Killers performs with the band to a sold-out crowd during the opening ni ...

It’s not confidential, the song always had potential.

Two decades later, that potential has been fulfilled — and then some.

On March 15, 2004, The Killers’ smash hit “Somebody Told Me” was released.

Girl troubles

It’s kind of hard to believe in hindsight that a future heartthrob like Killers frontman Brandon Flowers once had his struggles with the ladies.

And yet, that’s exactly what “Somebody Told Me” is all about — “A breakin’ my back just to know your name,” Flowers sings during the song’s opening refrain, alluding to the challenges of making a connection at the club.

“We were going out to clubs a lot at the time,” Flowers explained of the song’s origins in a 2013 interview with “Entertainment Weekly.” “It speaks to a young man’s frustration, the difficulty of picking up girls.”

Oh, those frustrations would end soon enough.

A breakout hit

Though “Somebody” was technically the second single released from The Killers’ debut “Hot Fuss,” it was really the song that broke the band. “Mr. Brightside” came out first in September 2003 but didn’t become a massive hit until it was re-released the following year. “Somebody” was the song that got the band its first serious airplay.

Another nod to New Order

The Killers took their name from the fictitious band in the video for “Crystal” by British post-punk greats New Order. They keep the New Order references going in the clip for “Somebody”: the wall of LED screens surrounding The Killers as they perform in the video a seemingly direct nod to the same imagery in the aforementioned New Order vid.

Second time was the charm

Like “Brightside,” “Somebody” was released twice as a single. First, with a now-rare pink cover — the 7-inch version fetches well over $50 on music sites Discogs.com today. It was reissued with a blue background, the far more commonplace version as the song rocketed up the charts. Speaking of which …

A certified smash

“Somebody” remains The Killers’ second biggest hit, having been certified triple platinum, trailing only “Brightside,” which has sold over 10 million copies. The song climbed to No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was a Top Five hit in the U.K.

A critical as well as commercial hit

“Somebody” was a critical success as well. Renowned British music mag N.M.E. named it the 41st best song of the aughts, while Paste ranked it the sixth-best Killers song in 2020. A year later, “American Songwriter” put “Somebody” at No. 3 in their list of the 10 greatest Killers tunes.

In a prescient, glowing review of “Hot Fuss” in July 2004, Rolling Stone writer Jenny Eliscu dubbed the album “all Killers, no filler,” citing “Somebody” as a standout track, making a bold prediction.

“The Killers threaten to pry dance rock from the steely grip of hipsterdom and thrust it unrepentantly into the mainstream.”

Among three B-sides included on the “Somebody” single is “The Ballad of Michael Valentine.” Valentine, the alter ego of professional poker player and singer-songwriter Rod Pardey Jr., was the frontman for Vegas rockers Romance Fantasy, whose lineup once included future Killers drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr.

Going for Grammy gold

“Somebody” was nominated for a pair of 2005 Grammy Awards: Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. It lost both to the same song: U2’s “Vertigo.” Ever heard of that one?

A well-traveled tune

According to the concert archival site Setlist.fm, “Somebody” is the Killers’ second-most-played song live. At 949 performances, it trails only “Mr. Brightside” and its 997 airings. Setlist.fm lists a Sept. 16, 2003, gig at London’s The Dublin Castle as the song’s first live performance — though the band surely played it at local shows before that. Its first archived Vegas performance was on Nov. 16, 2003, at the long-shuttered Tramp’s.

Popular among other acts as well

It’s not just The Killers who’ve played “Somebody” once or twice — a number of acts have covered the song. Among them: Italian rockers Maneskin, metallers Motionless in White, tongue-in-cheek lounge act Richard Cheese, singer-songwriter Alice Lamb, Jamaican Reggae Cuts and, yes, of course, “Weird Al” Yankovic — forget album sales, Grammy nods and everything else, that is truly the greatest sign of a song’s relevance.

Animated metal band Dethklok brings tour with Babymetal to the Masonic for two nights

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 24, 2024 / 5:39 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

The popular death metal band led by Brendan Small, the creative force behind popular Adult Swim animated show "Metalocalypse," Dethklok comes to the Masonic in San Francisco for two shows with co-headliners Babymetal.

Arguably the second most popular virtual band behind Gorillaz (the animated group helmed by Blur singer Damon Albarn), Dethklok made their as the stars of "Metalocalypse" when the show created by Small and partner/voice actor Tommy Blancha debuted in 2006. The world biggest death metal band in the program's absurd and surreal alternate universe, Dethklok stands as the planet's seventh largest economy despite the fact that the group's members are idiotic incompetents incapable of doing anything besides writing and performing brutal metal songs.

The quintet of singer Nathan Explosion (who was inspired by Cannibal Corpse vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher), guitarists Skwisgaar Skwigelf and Toki Wartooth, bassist William Murderface and drummer Pickles live and work in their massive fortress-like home and studio Mordhaus, venturing into the world to secure lucrative sponsorship deals and play huge concerts for their legions of fanatical followers with outlandish stage theatrics like over-the-top pyrotechnics, lasers and a giant swinging pendulum blade, inevitably resulting in widespread death and destruction.

Over the course of four seasons and a special broadcast on Adult Swim, "Metalocalypse" became one of the network's more popular shows and a favorite among musicians, with such notable figures as King Diamond, Alice Cooper, Jon Hamm, Werner Herzog, Jack Black and members of Metallica, Exodus, Emperor and Mastodon appearing on the show. Dethklok further built on its fanbase with a series of studio albums featuring the satirical songs featured the show like "Murmaider," "Bloodrocuted" and "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle." The band also delivered entertaining live performances with widescreen clips of the animated band projected behind Small and his talented band including monster drummer Gene Hogland (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Devin Townsend) and former Frank Zappa collaborator Mike Kenneally on guitar.

Dethklok would make regular festival appearances and tour with the likes of Mastodon, High On Fire, Machine Head and the Black Dahlia Murder. After the broadcast of the hour-long rock opera special, "Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem" in 2013, the band continued to perform, but the project went on hiatus after the show was cancelled two years later.

The band returned to action in 2019, playing the Adult Swim Festival to ecstatic crowds. Dethklok also returned to the festival post-pandemic in 2022. The following year, Smalls was at last able to release the final chapter in the Dethklok story with the film Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar , which was accompanied by both a soundtrack and the band issuing its acclaimed fourth studio recording,  Dethalbum IV .

With the show having run its course, the band's current tour could be Dethklok's last hurrah as it takes to the road with previous touring partners and co-headliners Babymetal which stops at the Masonic for two nights starting Wednesday . A sensation in their native Japan since first forming in 2010, the group mixes elements of heavy metal with elements of J-Pop and "kawaii" -- the Japanese "culture of cuteness" as exemplified by Hello Kitty and Pokemon. Singer Suzuka Nakamoto had impressed producer Kobametal (aka Key Kobayashi) in her earlier girl groups Karen Girl's and Sakura Gakuin when he wanted to start a new band performing a heavier style of music.

Initially a successful offshoot of Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became independent in 2013 and enjoyed growing popularity with the release of their self-titled debut the following year. Featuring Nakamoto along with fellow singers Moa Kikuchi (also a member of Sakura Gakuin) and Yui Mizuno executing synchronized dance moves and melodic vocals backed by a group of shredding metal session players known as the Kami Band, the album delivered a dizzying juxtaposition of sunshine pop and metallic crunch. The band rocketed to success in Japan and were playing sold-out shows to thousands when the girls were still in their teens.

The notoriety in their native land soon led to international touring in Europe and North America, with Babymetal appearing at major metal festivals and opening for Lady Gaga. By the time the band was set to release their sophomore album Metal Resistance in 2016, they were headlining Wembley Arena in London and the huge Tokyo Dome to 55,000 screaming fans. More high-profile support gigs with the Red Hot Chili Peppers followed.

While the band suffered some hardship with the accidental death of guitarist Mikio Fujioka late in 2017 after he fell from an observation deck and the departure of Mizuno due to health reasons the next year, Babymetal continued to tour and in 2023 announced the addition of Momoko Okazaki as Fujioka's permanent replacement. The band plays fan favorites and songs from its fourth album The Other One  at the Masonic. Opening acts on the two nights will be different, with hyper-technical British power metal band DrangonForce playing Wednesday and theatrical LA-based melodic death metallers Nekrogoblikon kicking off the show Thursday.

Dethklok and Babymetal Wednesday-Thursday, April 24-25, 6 p.m. $75.75 The Masonic
