Omkareshwara Temple

Omkareshwara Temple

According to the legend, the King killed a pious Brahmin for either his political ambition or because he coveted the Brahmin’s daughter. For whichever reason, innocent blood was spilt and the King had nightmares  from that day on.

On consulting other Brahmins he was told that only the special Shiva Lingam from Kashi in Varanasi would eliminate the Brahmin’s spirit.

He installed the lingam in the same spot as the killing of the Brahmin and built a temple to protect it. From that day on, the nightmares stopped and the temple premises is now protected and venerated for Lord Shiva.

The temple is a mix of Gothic and Islamic style architecture with the dome and minarets towering over the city giving the impression of a Muslim Dargah. Speciality: There is also a pond, with a small shrine in the centre, connected by a causeway where plenty of fish swim, making it  a huge attraction for children and devotees who are allowed to feed them. The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated here in great pomp and fervour lighting up the whole place and attracting many devotees to the shrine. Planning a trip to Coorg? Things to Carry

Things to Carry

Pack light when travelling to any place, the less you have to carry, the more you can explore and move around the place. Carry only the necessities as extra baggage and valuables will only make you cautious and worried about keeping it always in a safe place. Since Coorg is a hill station, the weather there can get really cold especially during the night. Also you will definitely indulge in some adventure activities throughout your stay. Below is a list of few essentials you must carry when travelling from Bangalore to Coorg.

- If you decide to go trekking or camping in Coor g to any of the peaks, it’s a strenuous and exhausting journey so things to keep your energy up like energy drinks, protein bars are essential.

- Not everyone is strong to battle these physical challenges so medicines for stomach upset, headaches, spray for body aches, tablets for vomiting, an antiseptic liquid or ointment for injuries any other medical condition treatment that you think you might need. You might not end up taking any medication, but prevention is always better than cure.

- Apart from medicines trekking has other challenges as well like insect bites, leeches as well as dehydration along the journey which many people don’t really take into account. So make sure you take along, bug or insect repellent, salt for the leeches and oral rehydration salts (ORS) in case of dehydration. Other trekking essentials include, torch, sleeping bag, tent(if camping), plenty of water, light food, sanitary essentials and a map or guide of the area incase you stray away from the group.

- If you’re travelling during the monsoons making sure to carry mosquito repellent or lemongrass oil which is a brilliant solution to keep those blood suckers away.

- While packing your clothes, take into account the duration of your stay and pack accordingly. Try and avoid carrying too much extra clothing as it will only increase the weight on you while travelling. Also pack clothing as per the weather condition, if you’re visiting Coorg in the summer, carry cotton clothes, if it’s in the winters make sure you carry warm clothes as temperatures at night get really chilly.

- For the monsoon visitors, also warm clothes are advised, along with a raincoat/jacket and an umbrella. What people may normally neglect are shoes, but It is very important to carry at least 2 pairs of good travelling shoes as feet can get infected due to prolonged soaking in the rain which can be fatal and ruin your experience of travelling and of the place itself.

- Living in the age of technology it is hard to stay away from the electronic gadget. So a handy mobile phone with a good camera, earphones, a DSLR camera for the shutterbugs, a charger, laptop if necessary, a power bank and an extra memory card if need be.

- For those who want to enjoy the true essence of village life and peace of mind, just a mobile phone would do the trick. Do not forget to carry ziplock plastic covers to protect your gadgets incase of rain.

- Identification proof and enough money for your trip. Try and not carry all your money in cash, instead, keep withdrawing as and when you might need.

- The last and the most important, always carry some amount of food and water with you, a bottle of water, a biscuit pack or even a fruit would do.

So here are a few things to keep in mind. Happy packing :) Must Checkout -  Coorg Tour Packages From Cochin                               Coorg Tour Packages From Mangalore

- If you plan to drive, you need to be careful about a lot of things, since you’re entirely responsible for the journey. So get your vehicle checked and serviced, keep in a spare tyre and the essential tools in case of a puncture and carry your car related documents before you set out.

- Start your journey as early as possible to cover up as much distance before the heat and traffic sets in. Break your journey twice or thrice to keep your mind refreshed with a meal and some chai maybe. Ask the locals for good food joints and try out the best even along your journey.

- Do not drive fast as the exhaustion of a long journey might tire you out to and speed breakers or even wild animals that Coorg is famous for might go unnoticed. So drive safe and save your life as well as any roadside animals. It is advisable to drive in turns, so travel usually with another friend who can drive as well.

- On reaching Coorg, make the best of every minute there. Set out in the mornings and try and cover up as much sightseeing during the day, since most of the tourist attractions close by 6 pm.

- Visit each of the falls with a good pair of trekking shoes, especially during the monsoon as the ground can get really slippery.

- Make sure you read a bit about the tourist attractions before visiting them, so that your trip is not futile. For example, the Madikeri Fort is closed on Monday.

- Carry enough water and food if you plan to camp or trek to any of the peaks.

- Nights can get cold and windy on the peak and it's important to carry strong tents as well as a warm set of clothes in case you plan to camp overnight.

- Make sure you are physically and mentally fit before attempting any of the adventure activities, especially river rafting in Coorg  which can be really dangerous.

That’s all for now, have a safe trip and keep these tips in mind. Coorg is waiting to be explored, go get there... Also Checkout -  Coorg Tour Packages From Vijayawada                              Coorg Tour Packages From Hyderabad

Credits: Jean JonesOne of the highest peaks in the Kodagu region, Tadiandamol has been a favourite not only amongst the trekkers but also with nature lovers, bird watchers and photo enthusiasts. The mountains have withstood the testimony of time and have inspired many since time immemorial. The erstwhile rulers of the Kodagu region have drawn serious inspiration from the mighty mountain. Trails of their legacy have been left behind at the Nalknad Palace which is close to 200-year old now. Tadiandamol has a rich diversity in its flora and fauna harmoniously co-existing amidst the dense forests and grasslands of the Western ghats.Tadiandamol Peak is the third-highest point in the region of Karnataka offering a magnificent view of the valley after crossing the meadows, water bodies, Shola forest and lush green vegetation. This peak stands at a height of 5,735 feet above sea level and is a favourite spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The mountain has stood testimony to the time and has witnessed several incidents both natural and man-made. Though scaling one of the tallest mountains in Karnataka is not the only adventure but it offers a great view of the surroundings and is one of the famous places to visit in Coorg.Trekking along Tadiandamol teaches one to be valiant and patient while one observes the bounty of mother nature. As one starts from the base village of Kakkabe, the snaking trails are at times broad and of concrete and at times just muddy and unpaved. The excitement begins when the trail gets a little narrower with the sight of dense vegetation, coffee, pepper and other spice plantations. You will be able to witness and enjoy the sight of colourful birds and butterflies and hear them. Trek Routes to Tadiandamol Peak The highest peak in Kodagu offers a fascinating trek to nature lovers. At an elevation of 5740 ft, it takes you through verdant greens of Shola forest, valleys and rivers. The starting point of the trek is at Nalaknad Palace, where large vehicles like buses and tempo travelers can be parked free of cost. There is a motorable road until the viewpoint which is another 2km ahead. Only small vehicles can access this motorable road. The trek to the peak starts from the Forest entry point, where one needs to buy tickets for the trek. The next major point is the big boulder where trekkers usually take a short break to witness a charming view of the surroundings. Beyond the big boulders are the grasslands leading to the silent forest. The pinnacle of the trek is the brilliant forest replete with flora and fauna of varied species. This is a moderate level trek which is 6km one way and takes close to 2-3 hours each side. The trails are broad and chances of getting lost are less.History of Tadiandamol PeakThe third highest mountain peak in Karnataka is extremely popular amongst the tourists. It is adorned with lush Shola forest throughout the valley. The Nalaknad Palace built-in 1792 in the periphery of the mountain has historical relevance. It was used as a site to seek refuge by different rulers during the times of war amongst the neighboring states. For the warrior clans also referred to as the Kodavas the highest peak in Coorg has been a source of inspiration. The stoic warriors were led by the mighty mountain to showcase their valour and strength which has been recorded in the pages of Indian history.

Kumara Parvatha Hill

Credits: Karthick SivaWhen it comes to trekking in South India, Kumara Parvatha also known as the Pushpagiri Hills is a must include in the bucket list of diehard trekkers. It is the 6th highest peak in Karnataka which offers one of the most enthralling trails in India at the backdrop of the Western Ghats. The Kumara Parvatha hill stretches for a whopping 13 Km and stands at an elevation of 4000 feet above the sea level. Kumara Parvatha is a group of three peaks namely- Shesha Parvatha, Siddha Parvatha and Kumara Parvatha each of which has its relevance to Hindu mythology. Kumara Parvatha is located in the Subramanya village of Sullia Taluk in South Karnataka and is the choicest destination for trekkers and nature lovers. The trekking trail runs dense through the Shola forest which is home to breath-taking flora and fauna under the canopy of clear blue sky. At some places, the trail is quite strenuous with volcanic rocks, gushing streams and rocky crevices that pose a serious challenge to adrenaline junkies. But nevertheless, the panoramic view of the Western Ghats at the distance makes it a rewarding journey for tourists who are ready to go the extra mile for seeing the wonders of nature from close proximity. Kumara Parvatha trek is also popular among the tourists who wish to visit the place as a distinguished pilgrim site of South India. Some of the religious places of interest in and around Kumara Parvatha are Kukke Subramanya Temple, Sringeri Mutt and Biladwara Cave that have significant religious connotations.Apart from that, there are scenic spots en route Kumara Parvatha where you can halt for overnight camping or rest for a while and sink into the overwhelming serenity of the vast expanse of Madikeri. The Malli Waterfalls, Abbimatta Waterfalls and Pushpagiri Forest Reserve are some of the popular natural attractions that make your rigorous trek all worth it.Trek Routes to Kumara ParvathaThere are two routes accessed by trekkers of Kumara Parvatha depending on their level of fitness and spirit of adventure. One route is from Kukke Subramanya temple which is a moderately difficult climb up to the Shesha Parvatha via Kallu Mandapa. From Shesha Parvatha there are ascends and descends through boulders and grasslands up to the summit. This is a longer route and in between, you will need to stay overnight at the Bhatt's House before starting for the rest of your journey on day 2.A comparatively longer route is from Beedhalli in Somwarpet. This route is slightly challenging even for experienced trekkers but the view you witness along your trek is worth your exhaustion and time. In this route, you will trek along dense Shola forest where you may come across the wild animals and birds and feast your eyes on the beautiful panorama at a distance. Trekkers usually take the Somwarpet route to climb up to the summit of the Kumara Parvath and the Kukke Subramanya route to descend.History of Kumara Parvatha There are a number of folklores that go round this pristine religious and scenic destination of Karnataka and each of them ushers immense curiosity among the believers to undertake an arduous journey up to the summit. According to the popular faith, Lord Kumaraswamy (Subramanya) killed demons like Padmasura and Tarakasura and was crowned as the king atop the Kumara Parvatha. The Lord washed his lethal weapon in the nearby river and hence the name Dharma Teertha. Indra, the king of the gods being pleased by the valour of Kumaraswamy asked for his hand in marriage with his daughter Devasena. The marriage between Lord Kumaraswamy and Devasena took place on the bank of Kumaradhara.Another story depicts Vasuki, the divine serpent was once threatened by Garuda (mount of Lord Vishnu/Venkateshwara). In order to save himself from the clutches of Garuda, Vasuki performed rigorous worship in the caves of Kukke Subramanya temple. Lord Shiva being pleased with his follower's devotion sent his son Karthikeyan (Murugan) to protect Vasuki from Garuda. It is believed that Karthikeyan visited Kumara Parvatha where Vasuki was worshipping and blessed him assuring his protection from all evils.

Madikeri Fort

Madikeri Fort has been a popular tourist attraction to witness the lives, rise and fall of several glorious rulers and dynasty. Founded by Mudduraja in the second half of the 17th century and constructed in mud, it finally took shape in granite and has stood testimony to several incidents. It is a coming together of several religions and an amalgamation of different cultures and traditions.A Fort with a temple, Church, prison, Museum and library is pretty intriguing, especially to history lovers. Different rulers from majestic dynasties have constructed and reconstructed the Fort time and again and used it in a way they felt was justified. Located amidst rolling mountains and lush greenery, one can spend hours inside the Fort looking for artefacts mentioned in the pages of history.Currently, the Madikeri Deputy Commissioner's Office is located inside the Fort premises. St. Mark’s Church built during the British regime houses a museum, which contains several interesting items related to history. It showcases a huge portrait of Coorg's eminent personality Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa, weapons and tools used by the different rulers and the British along with several other interesting objects. It is one of the best places to visit in Coorg and the beauty and culture of Coorg have been defined in a historical monument, The Madikeri Fort. The two-storied heritage property built by the erstwhile ruler of Kodagu has undergone several changes both structurally and functionally. A Fort built-in mud housing a beautiful Palace, that too made in mud to a Church adorned with stained glass and done up in Gothic style built by the British.Tipu Sultan further fortified the monument in granite and used it for official and leisurely activities. While the British made a museum adjoining the Church, made further changes and showcased various objects and artefacts used during the different transactions amongst the rulers.Book & Checkout - Coorg Tour PackagesHistory of Madikeri Fort The history of Madikeri Fort dates back to the 17th century when the erstwhile king of Coorg, Mudduraja had made Madikeri the capital city of Kodagu. It was also rebuilt by Tipusultan in granite and named the site as Jaffarabad and renamed the fort as Meraca Fort. In 1790 Dodda Vira Rajendra added to the architectural beauty of the Fort and then again by the Britishers in 1834. St. Mark’s Church built in 1859 is housed inside the Fort and has a museum built inhouse. The Architecture of Madikeri FortThe colossal Fort built against the backdrop of verdant mountains and an open sky reminisces one of an era bygone. The Fort, constructed in granite has been built in European style with elaborate pillars and checkered floor patterns. The two life-size statues of elephants at the entrance must have stod testimony to several rivalry and wars.St. Mark’s Church, in glass stained Gothic style replaced the old Vidarbha temple inside the fort also under the British rule. A grand clock tower was strategically placed to the exuberance of the fort in 1933. A sculpture of tortoise, with the name of King Vijayendra, engraved on it sits adorned upon to welcome the history aficionados. The grand architecture of the fort is not only the pride of the Kodagu region but has also attracted visitors from several parts of the world. The secret labyrinth of alleys and passes inside the fort gives way to mysterious stories associated with them which too must have seen gory and secret stories hidden within the walls.

A Quick Outline

Coorg – A Short Background For The Unintroduced

Coorg, known as Kodagu, is a district in Karnataka, India, famed for its verdant landscapes and cultural richness. It covers approximately 4,102 square kilometers in the Western Ghats , known for its rolling hills, coffee plantations, and dense forests.

Historically, Coorg has been ruled by various dynasties, and the Kodavas, the native warrior community, are central to its cultural identity. Uniquely, Kodavas are allowed to carry firearms without a license, a privilege granted by the British due to their martial history.

The introduction of coffee and tea plantations during British rule has significantly shaped Coorg’s economy and landscape. Today, it stands as a major tourism destination, drawing visitors for its natural beauty, adventure sports, and unique culture.

The district’s cuisine, characterized by pork dishes and rice-based specialties, and festivals like Kailpodh and Puttari, reflect its rich cultural tapestry.

Breakfast at Srirangapatna

Traditional South Indian breakfast - two white idlis with chutney and sambhar served on a banana leaf

After about a 2-hour drive covering nearly 125 kilometers, you’ll reach Srirangapatna, a historic town with a rich heritage. A recommended stop for breakfast is at Saravana Bhavan, where you can indulge in a delicious South Indian breakfast, reenergizing for the journey ahead.

On a longer road trip, you can actually spend more time here, but in this plan I suggest to just stop for breakfast and enjoy the views while driving

Visit Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe

Glittering Golden statues of Buddha in the Namdroling Monastery of Bylakuppe

From Srirangapatna, continue your drive for about an hour and a half, covering around 88 kilometers to reach Bylakuppe. This land was given to the Tibetan monks who sought refuge in India during the 1960s. There are many monasteries here, of which Namdroling, also known as the Golden Temple is the largest.

The Namdroling Monastery, a major attraction here, is known for its magnificent Tibetan architecture and serene ambiance. Spending an hour or two here is enough to explore the monastery, soak in the peaceful vibes, and learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture.

On a usual weekend, you can also take a trip to just Bylakuppe for an immersive experience of the Tibetan settlements in India.

Explore Nisargadhama Riverine Island

River glittering under the sunrays peeking through the thick canopies in Nisargadhama

A short 3-kilometer drive from here will bring you to the enchanting Nisargadhama riverine island around midday. This ecological park, nestled on the banks of the Cauvery River, is an ideal spot for a leisurely walk amidst bamboo groves, teak, and sandalwood trees.

You can also visit the Nisargadhama bird park here.

Detour to Chiklihole Reservoir

Water jetting out of the Chiklihole Reservoir in Coorg and tourists climbing down the stairs after watching the beauty of the surroundings.

Next, head towards the Chiklihole reservoir, a lesser-known yet serene spot perfect for nature lovers. This tranquil location is about 15 kilometers from Nisargadhama and offers a picturesque setting for a short break.

Conclude at Your Hotel in Madikeri

Finally, a drive of approximately 20 kilometers from Chiklihole will lead you to Madikeri, the heart of Coorg. By late afternoon or early evening, you should reach your hotel. Madikeri offers a range of accommodation options, from luxurious resorts to cozy homestays.

This first day of the Bangalore to Coorg road trip via NH 275 combines a mix of travel, culture, and natural beauty, setting the tone for an unforgettable journey through one of Karnataka’s most cherished destinations.

Day 2: Sightseeing Around Madikeri

After an invigorating first day and a restful night in Madikeri, the second day of your journey is dedicated to exploring the wonders around this charming town. Starting your day with breakfast, aim to begin your sightseeing around 9 am to make the most of the daylight.

The majestic Waterfall called abbey Falls at Coorg. This is the highlight of Bangalore to Coorg road trip

Journey to Abbey Falls

  • Distance and Time: Abbey Falls is located just 8 kilometers from Madikeri, making it a short and scenic drive of about 20 minutes.
  • Timing and Duration: The best time to visit is in the morning when it’s less crowded. The falls are open from 9 am to 5 pm, and there’s a nominal entry fee of around INR 20 per person. An hour here should suffice to enjoy the beauty of the falls and capture some great photos.

Trek or Jeep Safari to Mandalpatti

A group if girls travelling to Mandapatti - the famous site near Madikeri for breathtaking views

Post Abbey Falls, head towards Mandalpatti, about 18 kilometers from Madikeri. It’s advisable to hire a jeep as the road can be rough and challenging for regular vehicles.

The journey to Mandalpatti offers breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. At the viewpoint, you’re greeted with a panoramic view of the lush green landscapes, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers.

Timing and Cost: The jeep safari can be arranged at the base of Mandalpatti, costing around INR 1500 – 2000 per jeep, accommodating up to 5-6 people. The safari usually takes around 3 hours, including the time spent at the viewpoint.

Alternative to Mandalpatti : Since a trek to Tadiadmol is already in the plan you can skip Mandalpatti if you want to. If you missed visiting Chiklihole Reservoir on Day 1, you could opt for a tour here instead of Mandalpatti. It’s a peaceful spot, ideal for relaxation and nature walks.

Late Lunch Back in Madikeri

After returning from your morning adventures, aim for a late lunch in Madikeri around 2 or 3 pm. The town offers various dining options, from traditional Kodava cuisine to popular Indian dishes.

Evening At Madikeri

You can explore the city center of Madikeri after lunch. Walk to the Omkareshwara Temple – the most famous place of worship in Coorg. There is a small pond surrounded by a well-maintained garden inside the premises.

Then, proceed to Raja’s Seat, a mere kilometer from the temple. This is a landscaped park at the hilltop.

The best time to visit is during sunset, around 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, offering spectacular views of the sun setting over the hills. The entry fee is nominal, around INR 5 per person, and there’s an additional charge if you wish to take the toy train ride in the garden.

You can also enjoy the musical fountain here after the sunset. This is a great place to visit with children.

This day combines the thrill of exploring natural wonders with the tranquility of historic sites, all within close proximity to Madikeri. It’s a day that captures the essence of Coorg, with its blend of adventure, serenity, and scenic beauty.

Often skipped in the Coorg itineraries, Barapole river rafting was in fact the hghlight of my first trip to Coorg way back in 2015. It was a budget trip with friends, and we stayed in an eco-homestay at a hilltop, reached by a somewhat daunting jeep ride in the dark.

The trip was filled with firsts – from rafting in the vigorous Barapole river to trekking and visiting Namdroling Monastery. The moments of watching the sunrise over the hills, living in a small room with least amenities and the camaraderie around a bonfire at night added to the essence of adventure and camaraderie that Coorg embodies.

Day 3 promises an adrenaline rush with a river rafting adventure at Barapole, followed by a visit to the serene Iruppu Falls, and a relaxing evening as you shift to your hotel in Virajpet.

Barapole River Rafting experience

A group of four girls ready to embark on the river rafting adventure in Coorg

Try to check out of your hotel as early as possible today, preferably by 10 am. Then drive to the Barapole River Rafting Center in Srimangala, about 80 kilometers from Madikeri. This 2-hour drive takes you through beautiful landscapes, setting the tone for an adventurous day.

Rishikesh comes to mind whenever we speak of whitewater rafting in India. However, this is also a very well established rafting center.

The Barapole river is famous for its exhilarating rapids, suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. Rafting here usually starts from 7 am to 4pm in batches of 1 to 1.5 hours. Add to that the time of transport from end point to the start point, and additional activities, you can reserve 3 hours for this activity.

It costs approximately INR 1,000 to INR 1,500 per person. Under expert guidance, this experience is both thrilling and safe.

They provide safety jackets and helmets to everyone and give you instructions needed for the adventure. All seven of us embarked on this adventure on a single raft with our guide doing most of the heavy-lifting when it came to rowing in the water.

Beware, they might push you into the water at a safe location but tell them not to do such things in the very beginning. This just adds to the thrill, and I haven’t heard of anyone getting hurt in this, but I still, they shouldn’t do it if you tell them not to.

At an extra cost they will also get you a nose-dive into the waterfall at Barapole by pulling the boat upwards against the direction of the falls. Yeah, and only one person does it, speak of “ Bahubali ” for real!

A group of five girls and two boys along with the trainer ready to go for the river rafting adventure in Coorg

Lunch Post Rafting

After your rafting adventure, indulge in some local flavors at a nearby eatery. The area offers a variety of dining options where you can enjoy authentic Kodava cuisine.

Alternate Route for the Day

Whitewater rafting is a seasonal activity best enjoyed in the months of monsoon due to high water-level. The activity remains closed for 8 months a year and active only between June to September. In fact, most online bookings are open from July, so please verify ahead at your hotel or tourist center if you are visiting in June.

So if you are travelling on any other time you need to have an alternate plan.

Explore more of Madikeri

If you are not planning Barapole river rafting, then I recommend keeping aside some time today for visit to the Omkareshwara temple, instead of squeezing it on day 2.

After this you can visit the General Thimayya Memorial museum and then the Golf park of Madikeri.

Drive to Iruppu Falls

bangalore to coorg travel guide

Iruppu Falls, also known as Lakshmana Tirtha Falls, is a stunning cascade located in the Kodagu district of Karnataka . It holds both natural and mythological significance, making it a popular spot for both tourists and pilgrims.

The falls are a sight to behold, especially during the monsoon when they are at their fullest. The entry fee is around INR 50 per person, and the area is typically open from 8 am to 5 pm. The walk to the falls takes you through a forested path, offering a refreshing encounter with nature.

This place isn’t just a visual treat; it’s steeped in intriguing trivia that adds to its allure.

When you delve into the legends surrounding these falls, you discover their connection to the epic Ramayana. It’s believed that Lakshmana, Lord Rama’s brother, shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills to bring forth water to quench Rama’s thirst. This act created the Lakshmana Tirtha River, which cascades down as the Iruppu Falls.

As you stand before the falls, you’re not just witnessing a natural wonder but a site of mythological significance.

Drive to Virajpet with a stop at Chelvara Falls

A group of three girls posing infront of the majestic Chelvara Falls pouring at its full force in the monsoon

After the Barapole river rafting or the alternate itinerary, now it’s time to head to Virajpet before the sun sets. The scenic route to Virajpet is through the Bramhagiri eco zone, so it makes most sense to try and reach Virajpet before the evening.

Chelvara falls in Virajpet is a great spot to pause and enjoy at involving a hike that takes hardly 30 minutes or less.

After this you can retire at your hotel at Virajpet.

Day 4: Tadiadmol Trek and Long drive to Talacauvery

Trek to tadiadmol betta.

People walking to the top of the Tadiadmol Peak, it seems as if they can touch the clouds from here

Tadiadmol Betta is the highest peak in the entire Kodagu district (Coorg). The entry to the trek opens as early at 7 am, so the earlier you reach the better. The trek from base camp takes 5 hours round trip. However, you can hire a jeep to take you near the peak as well.

Wear good running shoes and carry two bottles of water in your backpack . You may carry some snacks too as it’s an offbeat spot not studded with shops. And that’s the best thing about it.

Reaching the summit, you’ll be treated to a 360-degree vista that captures the essence of Coorg’s natural beauty.

If you want to do the longer trek through coffee groves, verdant vistas dotted streams and waterfalls, check out the details here .

Drive to Talacauvery – The Source of Cauvery

Gorgeous views from Talacauvery or Talakaveri - the starting point of the river Kaveri in Coorg

Talacauvery is the source of river Cauvery – the largest river in Karnataka. This river is a main source of water not just for Karnataka but also Tamil Nadu. This place is therefore of great significance and is a revered pilgrimage site too.

The route from Tadiadmol base to Talacavery takes 1.5 hours. You can stop at several viewpoints for the gorgeous views of the river and the valley.

The route winds through lush landscapes and coffee plantations, offering captivating views along the way. Reaching Talacauvery by mid-morning gives you ample time to explore. This pilgrimage site is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by hills and dense forests.

On your way to Talacauvery you can stop at Triveni Sangmam, the spot where three tributaries of river Cauvery meet.

If you don’t have your personal car on this trip you can book a guided trip to Talacauvery on this day.

Drive Back to Virajpet

After spending time at Talacauvery, begin your drive back to Virajpet in the evening. The return journey is equally scenic, offering more opportunities to enjoy Coorg’s mesmerizing landscape. Arriving back in Virajpet by late afternoon or early evening, you’ll have time to relax and perhaps explore the town a bit more. Virajpet’s laid-back charm makes it a lovely place to unwind after a day of exploration.

Two girls at Virapet town market with the clock tower at the backdrop.

Day 4 is a mix of spiritual exploration and natural wonder. The journey to and from Talacauvery is as beautiful as the destination itself, filled with picturesque views and serene spots, making it a perfect day for introspection and relaxation in the heart of Coorg.

Day 5: Coorg to Bangalore via Nagarhole National Park

Drive to harangi dam.

Your final day in Coorg starts with a visit to the Harangi Dam, an impressive structure located near Kushalnagar, around 30 kilometers from Virajpet.

The drive takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The dam, set against a backdrop of lush greenery, offers a picturesque and peaceful environment.

It’s a great spot to enjoy the tranquility of nature and reflect on your journey. The best time to visit is in the morning, when the surroundings are quiet and the water is calm.

Depart for Bangalore via Nagarhole National Park

A bunch of spotted Indian deer in the Indian jungles

After spending some time at Harangi Dam, prepare for your journey back to Bangalore. But before that, a drive through Nagarhole National Park adds a final adventure to your trip. The national park, about 60 kilometers from Harangi Dam, is a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts. The drive through the park is a unique experience, offering chances to spot various wildlife species in their natural habitat.

Nagarhole National Park is known for its rich biodiversity, including tigers, leopards, elephants, and a variety of birds. The drive through the park is serene and refreshing, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Western Ghats one last time before heading back to the urban landscape.

The drive from Nagarhole to Bangalore covers approximately 220 kilometers and takes about 5 to 6 hours. This route lets you savor the lush landscapes of Karnataka, making the transition from the tranquility of Coorg to the bustling energy of Bangalore.

Day 5 is a blend of serene beauty and wildlife adventure. Visiting Harangi Dam and driving through Nagarhole National Park provide a fitting and memorable conclusion to your Coorg road trip, leaving you with a treasure trove of experiences and memories as you head back to Bangalore.

I won’t tell you that Coorg is the Scotland of India, as every other Bangalore to Coorg travel guide must have already said this to you. I have not been to Scotland and don’t know its landscape. But I can say that Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is straight out of that movie in which fat cows graze on a grassy carpet while spinach-green hills pose in the background.

I’m not sure if I can call Coorg a quaint town. Everybody  traveling in Karnataka  go on a road trip from Bangalore to Coorg, at least once. I’ve been to Coorg so many times I now have a list of 15 stunning and secluded coffee estates, home stays, and  hotels in Coorg .

A humble request: We overcrowd Venice, Paris, Coorg, Florence, Bangkok as if there is nowhere else to go. Meanwhile, the ecologies of these places suffer due to overcrowding and lack of care, obvious when tourists throng the destination. Let’s try to distribute ourselves through the lesser visited places which all hold, if not more, the similar richness of people, food, landscape, and history.

May I suggest Stuart hill in Coorg instead of Madikeri town, Mandi district instead of Manali , Kalga instead of Kasol , and Chile instead of London and Paris? But let us promise to respect these new places and not turn them into just hangouts to chill. Let’s chill in our backyards. But when we visit, let’s visit to see, know, and understand something unknown to us.

coconut+homestay+kodava+madikeri+coorg+karnataka+indi

What makes us travel to Coorg, a district nestled in the western ghats of South Karnataka?

Rolling emerald hills, an opportunity to see elephants, leopards, gaurs, giant Malabar squirrels, peppy birds of Karnataka, aromatic coffee and tea estates, huge avocados, rich Kodava cuisine, silky waterfalls melting into the revered Kaveri, old temples, and ancient monasteries could be some of the reasons.

Millennials who work a 9-5 or rather a 9-9 like to run away from the maddening rush of Bangalore city to a natural setting in  wild Karnataka . Sometimes their parents visit giving the youngsters another reason to drive to the many green and historical places to visit near Bangalore. Old Bangaloreans head out of the cosmopolitan state to find something more authentic.

And what could be more authentic than Coorg, a place which had been home to the  Kodavas , the ethnic warriors, for centuries? Just a five-six hours drive from Bangalore, Coorg offers the much-needed natural respite, too. (If you are looking for places to visit near Bangalore, travel to Hampi . And when in Hampi, do visit the Daroji bear sanctuary . )

I can testify the relief part for  during my corporate days  I also rushed from Bengaluru to Coorg on one  soul-finding  weekend. A kind homestay, rich Coorgi food, monsoon pouring over the balcony, perfumed coconut trees standing like a wallpaper,  Rabindra Nath’s Gora  in hand, and a cup of steaming Coorgi coffee rejuvenated me.

Now years later, when I returned to Bangalore from a  long South-America trip , nostalgia took over. I imagined myself sitting in the same balcony while clouds dripped and coffee and Tagore became my best friends again.

In those weak moments, I thought of revisiting the disconnected green hamlet of Coorg. Don’t worry when I say disconnected, for Coorg still receives phone signals and internet. But in Coorg nature is closer to you than anything else.

From Bangalore to Coorg by Road

Though I mostly  travel alone , I do have some occasional adventures with my friends, some of who love road trips. We decided to visit Coorg by road from Bangalore. We booked a Drivezy Swift.

The night before the Coorg trip, I had found that homestay on Booking. I couldn’t resist the tall coconuts, fat palm trees, and dense betel nuts of the homestay and booked immediately.

Update 2022 – About the road condition from Bangalore to Coorg : We took the Mysore route. So NH 275. Distance from Bangalore to Coorg via Mysore road is 248 km.

The route goes from Bangalore -> Bidadi -> Ramanagara (Ramdevara Betta Vulture Sanctuary, Kanva Reservoir, and Janapada Loka open-air museum) -> Channapatna (wooden toys) -> Mandya -> Srirangapatna (Tipu Sultan’s palace and burial ground) -> Mysore (bypassed, Rangnathittu Bird Sanctuary ) -> Hunsur -> Bylakuppe (Namdroling monastery) -> Kushal Nagar (Dubare Elephant Camp) -> Madikeri .

The highway is pretty well-maintained. While leaving Bangalore the state highway is four-lane. After Mysore the highway becomes two-lane. This later part of the highway is undivided and needs more attention. But the roads overall were good. The journey was smooth until a little outside Madikeri where the roads get more curvy and mountainous. You enter the Ghats after all.

The journey from Bengaluru to Coorg via NH75 is 275 km. We haven’t taken that route many times. But it is said to be a simpler one.

road trip from bangalore to coorg

I’ve noted the important places in and around every stop above in the route. At the time of the Coorg trip, I didn’t know about the Ramdevara Betta Vulture Sanctuary otherwise I would have gone there. We had been to the Rangnathittu Bird Sanctuary before. While driving from Coorg to Bengaluru, we stopped at the Dubare elephant camp but the camp was closed due to heavy rain the previous day.

So on Bangalore to Coorg road the next day, we only stopped at the Namdroling monastery in the Bylakuppe village. Namdroling is said to be the biggest Tibetan settlement in South India. We freely walked in the monastery. It houses about three thousand monks and has a gorgeous Golden temple.

religious+procession+road+from+bangalore+to+coorg

A Hindu religious procession was going outside the monastery, but life was peaceful inside  Namdroling . The gompa is huge and we got lost a few times. The kind monks always showed us the way. Two monks, huddled under an umbrella, warned us to walk carefully. The floor was left slippery by the unabashed rains that had been soaking us since we left Bangalore. After all, we were in June, a month that witnesses much mercy of the rain magicians in Karnataka.

A Buddhist tried to pray in the temple while loud tourists posed and clicked countless selfies in the temple. But their chatter didn’t discourage me from deciding to return to the monastery to stay there for a night. (Monastery allows visitors to stay. Make a booking beforehand.)

By the time we got to the highway, the sun had started to set. We had set on our road trip to Coorg around lunch and had made many stops. Soon we were driving on a dark and silent road.

Cars passed by infrequently. Roads were fringed by tall white-skinned Eucalyptus. Gulmohar trees and their creepers stared at us. Tiny thatched huts dotted the agricultural fields that spread from the road to the villages.

On that quiet forest road, I could only hear the stir of the crickets.

We thought we were lost. The dying phone signals in the rain-soaked Coorgi forest made our stomachs churn. We somehow connected to our homestay and requested them to guide us. When the host arrived in his SUV, one of my friends asked him to follow us. Everyone laughed.

The jungle was pitch dark. The road narrowed further as we drove behind the SUV.

After an adventurous drive, we were finally on the guest house’s rooftop digging into mango curry with soft rice and sour rasam. Our drive from Bangalore to Madikeri took us about seven hours, including a stop for lunch and Namdroling monastery.

If you love going on road trips: head to BR Hills in Karnataka and go for a wildlife safari there.

on the road to Coorg from Bangalore

Trip to Coorg – Our Homestay in Coorg and Coorgy Culture

When I went on a second trip to Coorg from Bangalore by road, much hadn’t changed.

I stayed with a family of Kodavas who ran a homestay within a giant coffee estate. But unlike the previous family, this one gave away far more glimpses of being Kshatriyas (a Hindu class for warriors).

One night our host served us fresh Coorgi curries and basmati rice. But I saw that while descending downstairs from our terrace homestay, he latched us from the outside. The homestay was on the first floor, and the family lived on the ground floor.

The next morning I asked the host about locking us. He said just for safety. I don’t know why but I recalled the story he had told earlier about the villagers getting together to hunt a wild pig.

Would the pigs climb up to our room? I wished not for I always slept with the windows and doors open to soak in the last silver light of the moon and the first golden rays of the sun.

I would have definitely ended up in the audacious pig’s stomach.

The tall, mustached guy walked away without providing me a satisfactory answer. But I got a good hint that the man belonged to the generations of an ancient native tribe of Kodavas, meaning indigenous people, who now do agriculture but were known as warriors.

Less than two lacks in number, Kodavas, who have inhabited Coorg for a long time, have stories of being Alexander the Great’s descendants. Another legend says the Coorg district got inhabited by a broad-headed race in the Mohanjodaro period.

Warriors or not, Kodavas live differently than the rest of the Karnataka communities. Due to their unique lifestyle and culture, the Kodava community has been exempted from getting a license to purchase firearms. Though this  exemption is under review now , I wonder if the need for a license will stop the Coorgi people from hunting wild animals. ( Update 2022:   High Court has recently upheld  the constitutional validity of exemption to Kodavas until 2029.)

I don’t want to be the judge of an ethical situation here. But who is right? The stout pig who walks into people’s estate by mistake or the locals who have been thinking of the pig as food since medieval times? Also, hunting is as much part of some cultures as is wearing a sari. We want to protect ourselves from wild animals, but how do we justify getting into the wild to hunt them when they didn’t so much so look in our direction? (a little more on this in the comment section.)

Kodavas are a mystery to most outsiders. And not many people research or read about them when they plan a Coorg trip. At least, I didn’t. ( Kodava history and its people have been described well by Travel Earth in this article. I also list books at the end of the blog for those who want to know this ancient culture more deeply.)

With windows wide open, we fell asleep to the sound of the rain rattling against the thatched roof. Only in a few hours, slightly before dawn, we were woken up by chattery green-blue Malabar parrots.

The flying foxes shrieked. Insects buzzed. Cicadas bustled like wheels of a train rattle against the tracks. A loud stream gushing somewhere close led the chorus.

The sky was like a game of chess with black and white clouds making their moves. The monsoon foliage hung like a painting. Betel nuts stood tall. Plants glistened with dew. A hungry orange squirrel scurried around.

The house dog had already been fed. When the grandmother of the house came outside, he squealed, barked, and made a patronizing sound.

coffee+estate+madikeri+kodagu+karnataka+state

Waking up in a home surrounded by a forest was an amazing experience.

We couldn’t see the coffee estate in the night as it had already sunk into darkness. So soon we walked into the estate.

The walk was full of surprises.

Coconuts, betel nuts, and palm were supplemented by papaya, guava, mango, and banana plants. Yellow, pink, and red roses, dahlia, germaniums, and jasmine smiled brightly. Passion fruits hung like perfect balls. Red and ripe coffee beans adorned coffee plants. The green peppercorns hung on the pepper creepers, like a bunch of grapes.

We got lost and ended up on another farm. The owner softened after hearing our pleas and showed us an old tree on his farm. The tree with its sinuous branches was not less than a celebrity, and I could feed the tree’s grandeur in the air.

(We could have also easily got lost in the Sharavathi Valley in Karnataka, if not for the guide who was taking us to the remote Silver Water falls there.)

estate+kodava+coorg+karnataka

Leaving the grand tree alone, we went for lunch to a Coorgi home-run restaurant in Madikeri. I was a non-vegetarian then, and we devoured our pork and chicken curries with our fingers.

If you go to this restaurant, do try their leechi custard. It could be your rainbow on a dark day.

tigertiger+restaurant+madikeri+coorg+food+kodava+cuisine+karnataka

After the heavy meal, we had the frothy Coorgi coffee. The coffee must have awoken us because drinking it we went to Raja’s seat — a popular place to visit in Coorg. But the top of that hill was just an excuse to go further into the jungle that lay beyond the tourist spot.

What happens in the jungle stays in the jungle.

coffee+estate+kodagu+madikeri+coorg+karnataka

After our forest adventure, we drove to Abbey falls. The traffic, the honking, unaware people standing in the middle of the road like zen cows,  Indian men who stared  — the scenery changed. I shrieked when a lady honked hard and that was the most exciting part of the waterfall trip.

Abbey falls is beautiful but make sure you go on a weekday or early in the day to avoid the crowd.

Eating Maggie and drinking chai with the velvety mountains in front did make up for some of the heart-wrenching honks. And remnants of that anxiety I get from visiting a crowded place flew away with the clouds swimming above the mountains.

We sped up on the silent road back to our Coorg homestay. This time we knew the way.

The next morning we drove from Coorg to Bangalore. But I knew I would travel to Coorg again to see the rest of the mysterious district.

Until next time.

Update 2022: Of course, I have been to the district of Coorg many times since then. Resharing this piece on living in Stuart Hill in Coorg and a photo essay from the same hill .

October to March is the best time to plan a trip to Coorg. From June to September, Coorg receives heavy rainfall making it difficult to walk or hike around.

Though I visited Coorg both times during the monsoon, I don’t regret traveling to Coorg in the rain. Coorg is gorgeous during rainfall. But I couldn’t hike to many places near Coorg due to the rain.

How much time do you need for a Bangalore to Coorg road trip?

Depends on you. You can spend a weekend or a month in Coorg.

To give you an idea, a one-day Coorg trip from Bangalore by car or otherwise would be too hectic. Even a 2 days Bangalore to Coorg trip sounds rushed.

At least half a day is required to reach Coorg from Bangalore by car. Vice-versa, too. So only on a three-day trip to Coorg, some of the nice places in Coorg can be visited.

If you can, stay in Coorg for a longer time. Then you can not only relax and explore Coorg at your pace, you can understand the culture of Kodavas too.

homestay+madikeri+coorg+karnataka+india

Is Coorg and Madikeri same?

Madikeri is a town within the district of Coorg. Coorg is also known as Kodagu.

Distance to Coorg from Bangalore is 250 km via NH275 or Mysore Road. Via NH75 Bengaluru-Coorg is 275 km.

Over the years we have taken both the routes to Coorg, NH275 and NH75, and have enjoyed the journey.

How to go from Bengaluru to Coorg?

The best way to travel from Bangalore to Coorg is by road — either by self-driving, getting a taxi, or bus.

Self-Drive to Coorg

Bangalore to Coorg roads are well-maintained. The drive takes about five-six hours ( depending on your speed and stops).

The distance between Bangalore and Coorg doesn’t feel much especially if you stop at the Namdroling monastery on your way to Coorg and at Dubare camp on the way back (and maybe other places).

Start your journey early. Bangalore to Coorg drive is fringed by forest on both sides. So carry an aux cable, as sometimes the car bluetooth doesn’t work, and tune into some good music.

Bus to Coorg

You can take a private or a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus from Bangalore to Kodagu. It takes around six hours to reach Coorg by bus. Check the bus schedule here on  Redbus .

Taxi to Coorg

When I had just arrived in Bangalore we used to book taxis with private car operators. But now an outstation Ola or Uber can be easily booked as well.

For people who love to drive, the best way to reach Coorg by far is by driving on the smooth Karnataka roads.

Choose one of the stay options on  Booking , my favorite platform for searching guest houses in India. I have also searched through many Booking.com properties and have prepared a list of  home stays and hotels in Coorg  that are secluded and nestled in nature. They all have good hosts and good reviews. The article also has some beautiful coffee estates. Go through the list and see if you like something.

I suggest you stay in a homestay to get the best experience of the native Kodava life. The natives would also help you explore Coorg the local way.

Tip to commute within Coorg: If you are going to Coorg by car, you can drive around to explore Coorg. But if you are going by bus, ask your guesthouse about the commute options. Maybe you can rent a car there or they can arrange one for you.

You can also bike or get dropped at a place and hike in the area.

flowers+homestay+madikeri+coorg+karnataka

Buy Robusta or Arabica coffee from your homestay owner as Coorg is one of the highest producers of coffee in India. Now that we have got the coffee covered, let us move on to other activities.

Here are some of the best places to visit in Coorg.

Brahmagiri peak — A great place for hiking.

Tadiandamol — The highest peak in Coorg. The trek is long, so please prepare accordingly. You can also camp at the top of the peak.

Barapole River — For river rafting.

Abbey Falls — Gorgeous falls but comes with large crowds.

Harangi Dam — This dam is about 36 km away from Madikeri. It was the first dam to be built on Cauvery.

Nagarhole National Park — Best chances to see wildlife in Coorg.

Talakaveri wildlife sanctuary near Coorg — Talakaveri means the origin of the Cauvery river. Beautiful sanctuary for seeing wildlife and walking around in nature.

Dubare Reserve Forest & Elephant Camp —Stop over Dubare while coming back from Coorg to Banglore. When I went there, the camp was closed because of the high flow of the river (in which the elephants bath). Hope you have better luck.

Cauvery Nisargadhama — An island on the river Kaveri. Walk to this island by crossing a hanging rope bridge.

Chettalli — A small village near Madikeri. This is where the popular Cherala Bhagavathy Temple is located.

Madikeri Fort — Built in the 17th century. Along exists a Tipu Sultan museum.

Omkareshwara Temple — In Madikeri. Ask the locals for the story of this temple.

Padi Igguthappa temple — A revered temple close to the Tadiandamol peak.

If you love to visit green places, travel to  Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh , or  another gem of Himachal Parvati valley  for some peaceful time in the Himalayas.

Another culturally intriguing place in India is  Spiti Valley near Manali.  If you are a culturally curious traveler, you would like Spiti.

Kodava or Coorgi cuisine is made with a lot of local spices, coconuts, curry leaves, and kokum. Most of the Coorgi people make their food with local ingredients and organic farm-grown products.

Kodavas eat a lot of meat, mainly pork and chicken. But as I’m a vegetarian, I won’t write about those dishes. Some of the famous vegetarian Coorg dishes are Baimbale fry or stir fry bamboo shoots, Kaad Mange— a sweet and tangy mango curry, Thaliya Puttu — a steamed rice coconut cake, Koovale Puttu – steamed jackfruit cake, Atti Payasa — a sweet made with coconut.

I was so confused by the various rice preparations Coorgi cuisine offers I thought to write them here.

Kadambuttu or kadubu are rice dumplings made with broken rice. Nooputtu is a smooth lump of compact rice noodles. Paaputtu is rice, coconut milk, and grated coconut steamed together to make rice cakes. Akki rotti is flat rice bread.

The best way to enjoy Kodagu cuisine is to try it at your homestay.

One of the amazing restaurants to try Coorg cuisine is Tiger tiger restaurant in Madikeri town.

If you want to learn the Kodagu cuisine , I recommend reading The Reluctant Cookbook: A Unique Selection Of Sumptuous Indian Recipes And Authentic Tastes Of Coorg by Hansa Ashok. This blog called Coorg Recipes is also authentic and delicious.

Hi Priyanka

Four of us are planning to take this route in late September or early October: Bangalore –> Mysore 2N –> Kabini 2N –> Coorg (Virajpet) 3N and then back to BLR airport to fly back to Kolkata. Is there any nice place between Coorg and BLR where we can break journey and stay overnight?

Try Dubare elephant camp.

Coorg is an excellent place to visit any time of the year. I visit often excluding the covid period. Recently I found that local traffic police is harrassing tourist unnecessarily for no reason and charging a lot of fine. I was talking on the phone while in the parking lot in front of police station only. When i drove from there, in thr next light, the cop said that he got a msg on the radio and he doesn’t what to do. He made us wait for 15 min so that the same patrolling van would come , and also 3 traffic vans went by while we were waiting. It felt like a gang together lying about the phone and harrassing. Since tourists are almost in a hurry always, they threatened to lock the car, etc even i was with|a 6 months old baby. Threatened us as well. It was extremely bad situation, but unfortunately i was not talking on the cell phone while driving. Also the cop told me once you pay the fine, take the receipt, then you can park anywhere, drive anywhere, etc. Anyway, very sad experience.

I’m very sad to hear this, Sunil. This definitely sounds like a harrowing experience, one we don’t want to find ourselves in. Hope you are feeling better now.

Though not in Coorg, many times police have harassed us, too. Especially while crossing state borders, leaving big cities such as Mumbai, and while driving at night in any place (not late night but even at 10-11 pm). They just stop us, harass for the masks- even though no one around us would be wearing them and we would still have ours partially on, and want to check the trunk and bags without any clarification whatsoever.

After covid, the police seem to believe they can harass anyone with a car, especially people who are visiting from outside. Mask is the most easy excuse to put random charges.

The common man (without a politician’s sticker) has no power in India. Sorry about your experience again.

You have not met the right person to show the core of coorg. If you really wanna know why Coorg is know as Scotland of India. Contact @travelincoorg

I hope you edit you blog once we show the real Scotland of India Coorg

Om & Namaste Priyanka, I truly enjoyed and got value from your ideas, suggestions and perceptions! Thanks. My primary purpose to visit Coorg was being close proximity to The Tibetan Community, however, from your article I now perceive the value of staying and adventuring Coorg. Thanks. (I’ll being in India for 5.5 months, from California). Maybe you can make some suggestions: I’m into photography “Birds and Wildlife” and Nature/landscapes, the spirituality of Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, of course COFFEE and good healthy food. I’ll be three nights in Coorg. Yet, I want to avoid crowds. I’ll be in Coorg in early November 2022…… Appreciate the input… Namaskar… jk

Dear Priyanka

We are a senior citizen couple ( 65 and 74 years old) , planning to drive down to Coorg in the first week of May. We have booked a homestay for a weeks stay . Which one of the two routes would you recommend to get to the Homestay ? Also considering our age and our desire to take it quite easy , what would you suggest we do on a typical day throughout the week?

Dear Sridhar,

Thanks for writing to me. I suggest the Mysore route. The roads are good that side and that’s the main route I have taken over the years. I’ve written about the road conditions in the article too. Please have a look.

On a typical day you can choose your own itinerary. For people who love to walk or hike, you can just head out in and around your homestay. If the guesthouse is in an estate, you will have plenty of space there itself. If not, all of Coorg is mostly forest and offers plenty of space to stroll and just be. Coorg Museum could be on your one day itinerary, there is a fort also, you can take a coffee plantation tour too, perhaps local cooking class (a short one), there are waterfalls, Raja’s seat for beautiful views (but there are many more places with views too), and so on. Coorgy culture is pretty old and misunderstood so if you are interested in knowing more, do ask your hosts about their life there.

Hope this helps. Thanks for writing to me. Priyanka

Many thanks!

I love your blog very interesting. I am going to Karnataka in July I am very scared, but excited at the same time. If you can please let me know where are the good hotels as I am going from USA I want commodity. I want to enjoy the culture and the religion, but I want to have my comfort too.

Fly High Priyanka, awesome canvas

You are Welcome.

Well written article..liked how you avoided those overused phrases like Scotland of India etc. being from that place I’m tired of hearing those..it has its own identity. On usage of guns, hunting etc we have our own reasons as many of us still live in remote places and there is no forest officials to save you from wild animals or police to safeguard if anything wrong happens during odd hours..we take care of ourselves hence exemption is granted and continued for a long time.. however guns have become symbolic now for many where it only comes out during festivals or rituals for most of us..some people with vested interest are unhappy with this for reasons which is not convincing or debate worthy according to me. However the court has ruled in favour of exemption recently.

Thank you for stopping by. I have written about various aspects of Coorg in many articles on my blog. But I’m yet to learn so much more. I think I will have to practice a little bit of Kannada to know more about not only Coorg but Karnataka, a state I have come to love.

I understand the usage of guns. I also understand how over the years guns have become symbolic for most people and they are only kept in rituals. Like on Dussehra some families keep weapons in the pooja all around India.

But the story I’ve mentioned above was different. The hosts had told us when they hear wild pigs in the estate at night they make sure to go out with neighboring men. In this case I argue the hunting: as far as I know the wild pig would feed itself in the estate and won’t come to the house. Animals also don’t like to run into humans. So is the killing justified for protection or it is just for the sake of hunting or perhaps to eat? No one can debate the vegetation damage in the estate by the pigs. Again, animals have to eat somewhere. Even then I understand that old cultures have hunting so ingrained in their systems that to them nothing seems wrong with it. And who is to call them wrong? We all know people who eat all kinds of meat call themselves animal lovers.

There are so many debates.

I appreciate you stopping by to let me know a little bit more about your gorgeous home 🙂

Thank you, sir. I will 🙂

Very nice description of your trip and also nice photos. Thank you. I am from Hyderabad and planning solo travel from Bangalore to Coorg. Please help me, if you can, with info on: 1) reliable and English speaking taxi operator for return trip 2) recommended stay for 3 nights at Coorg

Hi Balaji. I don’t have a taxi operator’s number. But you can look for a place on this article: https://www.onmycanvas.com/isolated-hotels-madikeri-coorg-karnataka/

Hope your journey goes well.

Is it safe to travel from Mysore and how are the self drive conditions. How is the road to Coorg now if you would have been there recently.

Should be safe from Mysore. Self-drive conditions in Karnataka are good as the roads and highways are well-built. I haven’t been to Coorg in a year, but I have been on the road towards that side and it was good. Do a generic Google search once, but I don’t think anything has changed. Let me know how it goes 🙂

I went to coord in Dec. such a shitty place and such a shitty route from bangalore to coorg. I got misled by such articles. Dont regret later.

what is home stay contact number

I am sorry but I don’t have that homestay’s contact number. Maybe try one of these places – https://www.onmycanvas.com/isolated-hotels-madikeri-coorg-karnataka/

Hey, very well written article! Do you have any recommendations as to which route to choose between NH 75 and Mysore Road? Any disadvantages on either side?

Hey, I don’t remember the route we took. But choose the one with Namdroling monastery on it.

Okay thanks!

Wonderful narrative. Will reach out to you for more information on your homestays ( Coorg, Udipi etc) around Karnataka and other states…will stay connected and look forward to more writings from you.

hampi is the best place to visit, i have seen a lot about hampi in youtube and other sites. i want to travel once..

Thanks for writing informative blog on Coorg. We are also planning to visit Coorg this week. Just want to know whether it’s easy to drive from Bangalore to Coorg? Like, is there hair pin curves or narrow road is there which make us think twice before going by our own car?

Hey, thanks for reading. I don’t remember about the hairpin bends. But given which estate or hotel you are going to, there could be bends or muddy narrow roads. Just ask the property once and they would be able to tell you. Let me know how it goes. Enjoy your vacations.

Thanks for your reply. Any specific recommendation to buy spices?

Wherever you stay, they will have pepper. So that’s sorted. Ask them for some and pay. For other kind of stuff, ask your homestay or estate itself. Some shops are there in the town but not all are good. Depends on what all spices you want.

Nice Information! You described all things about Karnataka very nicely. All the places are fabulous. Also the photos are awesome.

bangalore to coorg travel guide

Quick Information

Ideal duration, starting from, http://kodagu.nic.in/en/, bangalore to coorg guide.

The Silicon Valley of India- Bangalore is the upcoming IT Hub with the electrically wired minds that are looking for a holiday retreat, and what’s better than something that gives them tranquility and peace. Talking about Bangalore to Coorg distance , the stretch is easily connected through well maintained roads and thus, people often prefer private cabs and buses to reach the destination. There are railway stations and airports nearby, which have an efficient connectivity. Bangalore to Coorg is a drive that will make one experience various bounties of nature. Entering the Western Ghats in the south of Karnataka, lies this little paradise which is a perfect way to push away the weekly 9 to 5 tiredness and fatigue. And what could be better than finding this getaway in the same state? On one hand, there's the air of metropolis and on the other, there's this air of peace that would make one feel life again. One thus needs to travel from Bangalore to Coorg for an enchanting experience, especially when there is a super convenient and extremely beautiful Bangalore to Coorg route , which is the cherry on the cake. Thus, it is a must take trip.

To reach Coorg by air , Bangalore is one of the nearest airports. Thus, if one is finding any air routes from Bangalore to Coorg, then unfortunately there aren’t any. However, the roads are so comfortable, enriched with nature and it’s lush green bounties on both sides that no aircraft window would be able to capture. So why not take a much needed road trip to reach Coorg.

To reach Coorg from Bangalore by road, there are two popular routes that people generally take. The first one is via Mysore and the second route is to be taken via Channarayapatna. The first route that is through Mysore is a comparatively shorter route and is preferred essentially when the destination is south Coorg, say Kutta, Gonikoppal, Virajpet, or Nagarhole. There are two stretches- SH17 (distance about 140 km) and SH88 (distance about 115 km). The roads on this route are mostly convenient and efficient. The only problem that one can face is the relatively high traffic between Bangalore and Mysore, especially around Mandya and Ramanagara stretches. But this again, is ruled out if one travels in the early hours of the day or forenoon. What gives it a heads up is the frequent restaurants and gas stations that can be found unlike the second route. The second route is through Channarayapatna, preferred if the destination is around Madikeri or Somwarpet area. The biggest plus of this route is the relatively fast moving traffic, though one may have a few toll booths on NH48. However, the probability of one finding good restaurants is low here, before one hits Madikeri town. However, both the routes have their own highs and lows and that is all one needs for a journey. There are several buses available as well to take one to Coorg.

Coorg by train is a less preferred option because Coorg has no railway station of it’s own and thus, there is no direct train from Bangalore to Coorg. The nearest railway station is Mysore Railway Station, which takes about 3 hours from Bangalore. However, post here, one has to either take a bus or hire a cab to reach Coorg. Thus if one opts to take the train, then one anyway has to take the road after that.

  • While going out for treks, do not forget to carry along enough water to remain hydrated.
  • Carry your trekking essentials if you plan for an overnight trek or camping out. For instance, a torch, light food, protein bars, sleeping bag, and water are among the must-carry items.
  • Include a good pair of trekking shoes in your luggage, especially during the monsoon season. This is the time when the ground gets really slippery and so, you must remain prepared from your end.
  • Always keep a map handy when you are on your own and out exploring any unknown territory.
  • Nights in Coorg can be chilly. So, carry along a light jacket to keep yourself warm after sundown.
  • If you have kids accompanying you on the trip, make sure to carry appropriate clothes for them, based on the season when you are visiting the hill station.
  • And obviously, follow all the COVID-19-related guidelines including hygienic practices and social distancing.

A road trip from Bangalore to Coorg is an exciting adventure filled with thrills at every turn. You never know what new treasures and pleasures you may discover on the way. So, be ready to make the most of your quest and journey.

In 4 Days Road trip to Coorg From Bangalore – Why Didn’t We Go Trekking

Of our 4 days road trip to Coorg from Bangalore via Mysore, we have spent 2 days in Coorg.

Here is the reason why we did not plan to go trekking in coorg even though I have done all the research.

Some people travel for adventure, some travel to experience the place and culture, some travel for passion and make living, some travel to relax and get away from regular life, some travel for creating memories and experiences.

We traveled so we could ride the motorbike to the destinations and cherish the whole experience.

So our prime aim is to ride a bike and enjoy the experience on different roads riding to different places.

Also, a disadvantage with riding a bike for such long hours is that we cannot do any sports activities or any physical activities which demand more energy (unless we choose to stay in one place for a very long time).

All we do is relax at the end of a bike ride, and explore the city where we stay.

That’s the reason even though I read all the articles and collated all the info, we did not plan to go trekking in Coorg.

7 Articles on Trekking in Coorg I found Useful for Travelers

Where we went Local Sightseeing in Coorg Madikeri

Mostly we go sightseeing the famous places in our destinations and chill in restaurants, eat the local cuisine and enjoy the vacation.

While we were there in Madikeri, we chose 2 destinations apart from hanging out in cafes and restaurants.

On day 3 of our road trip to Coorg from Bangalore, we went to Raja’s seat and Abbey falls (mini trekking experience).

Sightseeing In Coorg : Raja’s seat

One of the well maintained tourist places to see in Coorg Madikeri is Raja’s seat.

It is a family vacation spot in Madikeri, with minimum entrance fee for adults.

After a hearty complimentary breakfast at Coorg International Hotel, we went to Raja’s seat, about 5 mins ride from our hotel.

We spent great time hanging around the park, clicking pics on the cliff of Raja’s seat.

The view was awesome and we clicked many pics before we left the place to hang out in a nearby small cafe.

Sightseeing In Coorg : Abbey Falls Madikeri

Even Though we didn’t go on a trek in Coorg during our stay, the trip to Abbey falls gave us a mini trekking experience.

After about a 15 mins bike ride from the hotel to Abbey falls checkpost, we walked down the stairs for about 20 mins to reach the falls.

But it was worth the sweat, spent time clicking pics, amazed at the falling river standing behind the barricade.

The crowd was moderate and a security guard was there to stop any trespassers from playing in the river.

Bangalore to Coorg Bike trip – Overall Experience

This was a successful 4 days road trip experience to Coorg.

Overall we had a good time –

– visiting Namdroling Monastery Golden Temple (also Cauvery Nisargadama)

– bike riding / roaming around the places near Madikeri (mainly Raja’s seat and Abbey falls),

-enjoying local food and coffee, clicking lots of pics and making memories.

We didn’t buy any Coorg spices nor Coorg coffee because we were limited by luggage space. But would love to buy some on our next road trip to Coorg from Bangalore.

Now you can also plan for a 4 days road trip to Coorg From Bangalore. You could also add many sightseeing places near Coorg from the list above. Also plan for trekking in Coorg.

Or you could spend just a day or two only in Coorg, because there are many local sightseeing places in Coorg Madikeri.

If you are planning road trip from Mysore, you could cover more places beyond Coorg – like Kabini River, Nagarhole National Park, Wayanad etc.,

So overall it was very memorable and pleasant road trip from Coorg to Bangalore.
